- 0:20Elon.supercast.com to find out how there's a link in the show
- 0:26notes. So Reddit has recently adjusted
- 0:28CEO Steve Huffman's compensation structure in anticipation of its
- 0:32forthcoming initial public offering or its IPO.
- 0:36Now this is a recalibration of its market value expectations.
- 0:39But previously Huffman's compensation included incentives
- 0:43tied to the company achieving a $25 billion market valuation.
- 0:46Upon going public, these incentives had been revised,
- 0:50reflecting a more conservative outlook on the company's IPO
- 0:53performance. Now in a detailed review of
- 0:55companies documents, it was discovered that in December
- 0:58Reddit retracted specific executive awards contingent upon
- 1:02the company reaching A lofty market capitalization post IPO.
- 1:06This move shows a strategic pivot in the company's approach
- 1:09to execute compensation and valuation aspirations.
- 1:13And despite the adjustment in valuation based incentives,
- 1:16Huffman maintains eligibility for restricted stock units or Rs
- 1:21US contingent on the company sustaining a $5 billion market
- 1:24valuation over a 10 day period. A recent updates to the
- 1:29company's filings suggest that this revised valuation target
- 1:32aligns with Reddit's current market expectations with a
- 1:35potential RSU value estimated at approximately $21 million.
- 1:40Now this recalibration of financial expectations is a
- 1:43significant tempering of ambition for Reddit's IPO.
- 1:47Posited as a notable event in the tech industry's market
- 1:50listings for the year, the company initially filed for an
- 1:53IPO confidentially in 2021, but decided to postpone.
- 1:57Influenced by an environment of increasing interest rates in a
- 2:00downturn in tech stock valuations, the company Reddit
- 2:04is poised to list shares on the New York Stock Exchange
- 2:07imminently. With pricing markedly low to its
- 2:11last private valuation of $10 billion, the strategy shows that
- 2:15the company's pragmatic adjustments to current market
- 2:18conditions in investor sentiment are 100% real.
- 2:22Now there's executive compensation amendments going on
- 2:27here. Now there's concerns about that
- 2:29too. And there's because there's late
- 2:31changes to Huffman's incentives, these adjustments might not
- 2:35adequately motivate the CEO towards substantial post IPO
- 2:39stock value growth. It's a potential issue for any
- 2:43investor's perspective going into this IPO.
- 2:47Now, while Huffman's compensation has been adjusted,
- 2:50some aspects of executive incentives remain tied to
- 2:53ambitious valuation targets. Notably, Huffman and Chief
- 2:56operating Officer Jennifer Wong retain eligibility for stock
- 2:59options and performance awards linked to the company, reaching
- 3:02$25 billion valuation. This is a mix of conservative
- 3:06and aspirational targets within the executive compensation
- 3:09structure. Now Huffman, who's a Co founder
- 3:12of Reddit known by the username Spez, has been pivotal in the
- 3:16company's growth and strategic direction since its operation
- 3:19and his return in 2015. And under his leadership, Reddit
- 3:23has expanded this user base and enhanced its advertising revenue
- 3:26streams, navigating through periods of organizational
- 3:29challenges. And the delay in Reddit's IPO
- 3:32has afforded the company a little bit of additional time to
- 3:34diversify its revenue sources beyond traditional advertising,
- 3:38venturing into E com and also data licensing.
- 3:41And these initiatives had contributed to a revenue
- 3:44increase of over 20% last year totaling $804 million.
- 3:49Although the company has not yet achieved profitability with a
- 3:52reporting net loss of almost $91 million in 2023.
- 3:57Now, this data licensing is a key aspect of Reddit's future.
- 4:02With large language models and AI, they can use all the data
- 4:07from the users, all the posts, all the comments, all the up
- 4:10votes. As data for AP is for AI
- 4:14subsets, and as Reddit prepares for its IPO and a competitive
- 4:18and scrutinized market, its ability to attract investor
- 4:21interest remains a little bit uncertain right now, especially
- 4:25given its lack of profitability and the challenging landscape
- 4:28for digital advertising revenue. Company's performance in this
- 4:32regard will serve as a litmus test for the market's
- 4:34receptiveness to tech AP OS right now.
- 4:37In anticipation of its stock market debut, Reddit has
- 4:40outlined strategic plans to bolster its fledgling
- 4:42advertising sector and diversify revenue streams, including
- 4:47content licensing. The company aims to leverage
- 4:49these initiatives to improve financial health and engage
- 4:52potential investors by offering IPO shares to its user base, a
- 4:56move that could generate considerable buzz and
- 4:58engagement. Despite these growth efforts,
- 5:01potential investors face the prospect of buying into a
- 5:04company that has not. Yet reported.
- 5:07A profitable year And amidst fierce competition for
- 5:10advertising revenues from larger, more established
- 5:12companies. This context raises questions
- 5:15about Reddit's valuation and its appeal to investors seeking
- 5:18substantial and sustainable growth and profitability.
- 5:22This IPO, with a targeted valuation significantly lower
- 5:25than previous estimates, is a cautious approach in a market
- 5:28environment that has growth Increasingly wary of high
- 5:32valuations for unprofitable companies.
- 5:34This pricing decision underscores the company's
- 5:37adjustment to market realities and also investor sentiments.
- 5:41Keep it low, people will invest, and the company's decision to
- 5:45reserve a portion of its IPO shares for its user community
- 5:49introduces a unique element to its public offering, potentially
- 5:52increasing stock volatility due to unpredictable trading
- 5:55behaviors of retail investors. And this approach, while
- 5:59fostering community engagement, introduces additional dynamics
- 6:02that can impact the stock market's performance.
- 6:05Now, I was invited to be part of those IPO shares.
- 6:10I haven't reserved my shares quite yet, but I may be
- 6:14investing in this. And mind you, this is not
- 6:16investment advice from me or from the show or from the
- 6:19company, so just want to let you know that I got in.
- 6:22Hopefully you get it too. Now, Reddit's competitive
- 6:25positioning in the social media and digital advertising
- 6:27marketplaces will be scrutinized within the next week.
- 6:31The company's ability to carve out a substantial niche amid
- 6:35formidable competitors will be critical to its long term
- 6:37success and attractiveness to new investors after the IPO.
- 6:43The market conditions right now, characterized by recent listings
- 6:46that are lacklustre in performance and an uncertain
- 6:49interest rate landscape, pose additional challenges for
- 6:52Reddit's IPO right now. The company's market debut will
- 6:55be closely watched all the way through 2024 and 2025.
- 6:59We've seen it happen before. Tech stocks have been valued so
- 7:04high and within six months completely plummet off the face
- 7:08of the earth. So Reddit's a cool place.
- 7:11I enjoy it. I think it's fun.
- 7:13I don't know if you like it. Maybe it's a a good investment
- 7:17for you. Maybe you can help support the
- 7:18company. But as they navigate the public
- 7:21offerings, the company's performance will offer valuable
- 7:24insights into viability of new tech IPOs in the current
- 7:28economic and market environment. The outcome of this IPO could
- 7:32influence the strategies of other tech companies that are
- 7:35similar to Reddit, considering public listings shaping the
- 7:38trajectory of the IPO market in the near term.
