- 0:56Speaker 1: one of the greatest rock groups of all time, one
- 0:59Speaker 1: of the most influential I'm talking about like when we
- 1:01Speaker 1: think about this culture, man, they lost souls here. Welcome,
- 1:06Speaker 1: Thank you for having yes, sir man, it's good to
- 1:09Speaker 1: see you guys. I was just giving you guys flowers
- 1:11Speaker 1: because I got to hear the album and I listened
- 1:13Speaker 1: to its two times back to back, and you know,
- 1:16Speaker 1: we're in late November. You guys are snucking album of
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Year contender.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Man, it is.
- 1:23Speaker 2: It is a beautiful body of work for really, thank
- 1:26Speaker 2: you so much.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Man.
- 1:26Speaker 1: You know, I'm curious, like because this album was so
- 1:29Speaker 1: intentional and the secretcing and you know, the skits and
- 1:34Speaker 1: the way you guys are able to kind of just
- 1:35Speaker 1: get in and out of this project and each song
- 1:37Speaker 1: kind of introduces the next. What was the timeline on
- 1:42Speaker 1: how long you guys were putting this together?
- 1:44Speaker 4: Well, and initially started to be the Pete and Preme
- 1:50Speaker 4: Pete Rocking premiere record that we were supposed to do
- 1:54Speaker 4: well before the pandemic. So you got a little because
- 1:58Speaker 4: you hear that you have those elements now and obviously
- 2:03Speaker 4: with the loss of Dave, of course it morphed into
- 2:08Speaker 4: something a little bit more with honor and his legacy
- 2:12Speaker 4: and continuing ours as well, and Yeah, just that right, there.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Was the secreencing part.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And and because you guys are able to pull us
- 2:25Speaker 1: together to be such a cohesive masterpiece of my opinion
- 2:29Speaker 1: is that the fun part for y'all when you guys get.
- 2:32Speaker 3: The record's not always mattered from day one.
- 2:34Speaker 1: But but now you're able to be like, yo, all right,
- 2:36Speaker 1: we gotta let's get to these skits. Let's get to
- 2:38Speaker 1: the you know, the narration of the project, that kind
- 2:41Speaker 1: of it's it's it's so beautifully done.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Man, No, thank you, bro. I mean it's always been
- 2:46Speaker 2: very important for us.
- 2:47Speaker 5: I mean, as May said, like we had a few
- 2:49Speaker 5: songs from Pete, a few songs from Preem. Once we
- 2:53Speaker 5: realized once Master Pill asked us to be a part
- 2:55Speaker 5: of the Legends project, and we kind of realized at
- 2:58Speaker 5: some point like it had to go beyond just Pete
- 3:01Speaker 5: and Prem right, and you know, because Dave Voice was
- 3:05Speaker 5: on stuff from other producers like Super Dave West or
- 3:08Speaker 5: Jake One. Once we added that, then that's where the
- 3:12Speaker 5: sequencing started. Because the Pete and Prem stuff was never
- 3:15Speaker 5: kind of in a thought of a sequence. It was
- 3:17Speaker 5: just we were just trying to turn out songs. But yeah,
- 3:20Speaker 5: once we kind of knew that, and it was under
- 3:22Speaker 5: the flag of doing right by Dave and you know
- 3:25Speaker 5: what the tone was going to be. You know, you
- 3:28Speaker 5: could be like, well, this feels like something towards the end,
- 3:31Speaker 5: it feels like something that can start it off. And
- 3:33Speaker 5: so it was a lot of fun doing that because
- 3:35Speaker 5: you're looking for the right record. You can get something
- 3:37Speaker 5: that this is dope and you'll be like, you know what,
- 3:39Speaker 5: it doesn't doesn't fit though in the sequence, or it
- 3:42Speaker 5: doesn't even fit on the album.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So that is always a beautiful challenge to being.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Was there a lot of those records that you guys
- 3:49Speaker 1: just just didn't make the cut?
- 3:50Speaker 3: Yeah, there was records. There was.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I'm always just curious, like yeah, because I'm sure like
- 3:55Speaker 1: there's always there's just so much unreleased music from the Goats.
- 3:58Speaker 1: It's like how much how much stuff like you guys
- 4:01Speaker 1: just a hard drive somewhere.
- 4:04Speaker 4: Additional amount stuff that probably will make something else. You know,
- 4:10Speaker 4: there's conceptionally how the song came together. But yeah, there's
- 4:14Speaker 4: a few things.
- 4:16Speaker 2: You guys.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Have.
- 4:19Speaker 2: You know, we're kind of the the face.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Of ownership and the battle of ownership and kind of
- 4:24Speaker 1: this weird moment of the streaming industry taking over, and
- 4:30Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of crazy because by the time
- 4:32Speaker 1: you guys, uh, you know, work out. I want to say,
- 4:38Speaker 1: someone bought the Tommy Boy Tommy Boy. That's twenty twenty three,
- 4:45Speaker 1: and that's around the time Dave passes.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Do you kind of feel like the music being available
- 4:51Speaker 1: for streaming and you guys being able to tell people
- 4:53Speaker 1: please go stream our music? It kind of felt like,
- 4:56Speaker 1: because I remember, it felt like kind of like a
- 5:00Speaker 1: way to mourn the passing a day, like all this
- 5:02Speaker 1: music is available and how was that for you guys?
- 5:06Speaker 2: That I had to be an interesting year man to lose,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you know.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I mean, it wasn't something we expected, you know, once
- 5:13Speaker 4: things got worked out, we had plans to do a lot,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, and the plants got stumped because we lost
- 5:22Speaker 4: my brother, you know. But yeah, we we were basically
- 5:26Speaker 4: a litmus tests for the ownership.
- 5:30Speaker 3: Of our catalog. Here it is.
- 5:31Speaker 4: We weren't really the only ones. I think we were
- 5:34Speaker 4: the only ones that come forward.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:36Speaker 1: You guys are very vocal, Yeah yeah, yeah, and rightfully
- 5:39Speaker 1: so you know, I think like even if you look
- 5:41Speaker 1: at like I mean on on like a pop skill
- 5:43Speaker 1: like Taylor Swift with through this Ship, and it was like,
- 5:45Speaker 1: just gonna record.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Did you guys ever think about re recording stuff?
- 5:48Speaker 5: We thought about it. We threw that in the air.
- 5:51Speaker 5: I really wasn't with it. I think it evens.
- 5:53Speaker 2: I think you was the one who talked about it.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I thought it came up as an idea, but it
- 5:58Speaker 4: would would have changed the esthetic of what we did.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah, because I don't like when you hear reworked, like.
- 6:07Speaker 2: It just it doesn't feel the same.
- 6:10Speaker 5: You know, your your your memory bank because searching for
- 6:14Speaker 5: the exact way he may have said it, or the
- 6:16Speaker 5: exact way cool Keith Metas said his hym on ego
- 6:19Speaker 5: Tripp and when you have these reworks, they don't feel
- 6:22Speaker 5: the same. So my idea at one point was like, well, yo,
- 6:25Speaker 5: don't even try to rework it. Let's do a live version,
- 6:28Speaker 5: like how James Brown to do a live album and
- 6:30Speaker 5: then you can catch on me.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You think of that unplugged whole album.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean, thank god we didn't even have
- 6:35Speaker 5: to do none of that because it wasn't worked out.
- 6:38Speaker 1: What would be the advice because you guys have obviously
- 6:41Speaker 1: y'all's first album is eighty nine, so You guys have
- 6:43Speaker 1: been through every era of this music industry, from cassettes
- 6:49Speaker 1: all the way to streaming. What would be the advice
- 6:52Speaker 1: you would give like an artist on the come up
- 6:55Speaker 1: in terms of what to look out for in a deal,
- 6:57Speaker 1: what not to do, what not to sign like?
- 7:00Speaker 3: It's hard. It's hard. That's hard to say when a
- 7:05Speaker 3: lot has changed. You know.
- 7:08Speaker 4: What artists have to their benefit. The bargainingship that they
- 7:12Speaker 4: do have is knowing you could do your own thing
- 7:14Speaker 4: on the internet and get some results and walk in
- 7:17Speaker 4: and say, yo, this is what I did on my
- 7:18Speaker 4: own So you can kind of dictate your deal from
- 7:21Speaker 4: the door pretty much, you know, which we didn't have that,
- 7:25Speaker 4: you know, so it's hard to tell them how to
- 7:30Speaker 4: approach this. It's a case by case situation. It's all
- 7:33Speaker 4: about what's going on in your life and what you
- 7:36Speaker 4: have or don't have will determine what kind of deal
- 7:39Speaker 4: you will accept.
- 7:40Speaker 2: You know what I'm say.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I always was curious one, do you guys have an
- 7:47Speaker 1: MF Doom store you could share in two? I think
- 7:50Speaker 1: Rock Cocaine Flow is one of the hardest songs of
- 7:52Speaker 1: all time.
- 7:54Speaker 2: That record is so fucking crazy.
- 7:57Speaker 1: I remember we had a underground hip hop showing Phoenix
- 7:59Speaker 1: shout out my I Squeaked Boogie and they used to
- 8:01Speaker 1: play that shit every Friday night. On Friday Night, flay
- 8:03Speaker 1: this and I man that beat well first of all,
- 8:07Speaker 1: MF Doom story And when y'all heard that beat for
- 8:10Speaker 1: the first because that beat is so.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Unconvenient one, yeah, bro.
- 8:17Speaker 2: White van music blew out soul and I mean, like
- 8:23Speaker 2: it wasn't he put it on the CD.
- 8:26Speaker 5: I still got the CD. He put it on it
- 8:28Speaker 5: by mistake. He didn't realize he put it on this
- 8:30Speaker 5: So when I heard it, like funny enough, the My
- 8:33Speaker 5: Life record that we used for grind date was on there,
- 8:36Speaker 5: and and that one My Life was dope. It was
- 8:39Speaker 5: a bunch of other stuff on there was dope. But
- 8:40Speaker 5: when I heard that and I immediately called him.
- 8:42Speaker 3: I was like, Yo, what is this?
- 8:44Speaker 2: And I saw singing the beat to him and he
- 8:45Speaker 2: was pausing. He was like, Yo, pasta.
- 8:48Speaker 3: That really wasn't even meant to be on it.
- 8:49Speaker 2: He's like you like that, I ain't even think. I
- 8:51Speaker 2: was like, are you fucking kidding me?
- 8:53Speaker 5: I was like, Yo, we want that one and forget it.
- 8:57Speaker 5: I let Dave heard it had to be so like
- 8:59Speaker 5: just the right to that man ride the Yeah, but
- 9:03Speaker 5: that's right up DayLA's alley. Like of course the bee
- 9:06Speaker 5: was already crazy, but just the slowing down and starting
- 9:09Speaker 5: or the fast. He was like, this is it, and
- 9:12Speaker 5: I mean we just killed it. Dave was like, yo, man,
- 9:15Speaker 5: we should put should put Doom on this, and I
- 9:17Speaker 5: was like, with no question.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And when Doom heard it was the same thing.
- 9:21Speaker 5: He came came to the studio with the little mischievous.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Face because he knew he had his runs. I was like,
- 9:27Speaker 2: oh boy, what you got.
- 9:29Speaker 3: No, no, I'm ready for this. Let me know what
- 9:31Speaker 3: I got going.
- 9:32Speaker 2: To booth And he went to boof and just blacked
- 9:34Speaker 2: out and kilt it.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Yo.
- 9:37Speaker 1: It's crazy too because like when I think of like
- 9:41Speaker 1: that era of y'all's career, it was very like you
- 9:45Speaker 1: guys kind of like came out in an era where
- 9:48Speaker 1: the internet was cracking, so it was almost like grind
- 9:50Speaker 1: Date was like a reintroduction to a whole new fan
- 9:53Speaker 1: base for you guys, because like kids who were sixteen
- 9:56Speaker 1: at that I think I was like fifteen sixteen at
- 9:58Speaker 1: the time, Like you know, Ship, I was born in
- 10:01Speaker 1: eighty seven, come out Yeah, no.
- 10:03Speaker 2: No, I mean I was he was born in eighty ship.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I know did Wow. That was amazing hip hop?
- 10:12Speaker 1: You love question Another thing I think you know, you
- 10:16Speaker 1: guys were very instrumental in giving Dyla some of his
- 10:21Speaker 1: early placements that you know were bigger.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Obviously Stakes is highs Well still only did the title track, right.
- 10:30Speaker 4: You know what was cool about that? It was completely
- 10:32Speaker 4: different from anything he did for everyone else. Everything he
- 10:37Speaker 4: did for us was totally daylight.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I would say his version of how did you guys
- 10:44Speaker 1: get introduced to Dylan just through him meeting.
- 10:48Speaker 5: Dave Well, he met Tip first. Like Tip was already
- 10:52Speaker 5: doing whatever he was doing on the Lallapalooza tour. I believe,
- 10:58Speaker 5: oh my god, I'm just drawing a with the amp
- 11:01Speaker 5: amt fiddler. So he was amp was on there with
- 11:04Speaker 5: Funk with George Clinton and there they the one who
- 11:08Speaker 5: let Tip hear JD's beats like Slum Village and all that.
- 11:12Speaker 2: So I remember when.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Not Try was on tour with us, but they would
- 11:18Speaker 5: come with us on the weekends, but they would go
- 11:19Speaker 5: back on a lot of paloozer joint They was going
- 11:21Speaker 5: back and forth.
- 11:22Speaker 2: So when Tip came back out with us.
- 11:24Speaker 5: He first let Dave hear it, and they was listening
- 11:27Speaker 5: to him the bus and I remember just coming on
- 11:28Speaker 5: and they was like, yo, you gotta hit this ship.
- 11:30Speaker 5: And so we just got a taste of what he
- 11:32Speaker 5: was doing. By the time Tip really pulled him into
- 11:35Speaker 5: the fold, forget it. And I mean, like those beat
- 11:38Speaker 5: tapes that started flowing, not even beat tapes, just his group,
- 11:41Speaker 5: him and slum Village, and we were just like, Yo,
- 11:44Speaker 5: these guys are really dope.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Let alone.
- 11:47Speaker 5: When we realized, like, okay, so this guy he makes beats.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I thought his name was like bullshittingness because he kept
- 11:54Speaker 5: saying that on one song. And so like yo, when
- 11:57Speaker 5: we heard what he was doing, it just spoke to
- 11:59Speaker 5: all of them us, spoke to us or a pharaolmonch
- 12:02Speaker 5: or so s.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Yeah, forget it.
- 12:05Speaker 5: I mean like when those those tapes start flowing, we
- 12:09Speaker 5: were just waiting to get one that was right for us.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Yeah, and it worked out like you said, Yeah, you know, hey,
- 12:15Speaker 2: we got to stop the interview to tell you about
- 12:16Speaker 2: our good folks. Odd socks.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Man.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Now these are the odd socks basics, ladies and gentlemen. Now,
- 12:22Speaker 1: when I tell you this is a product that every
- 12:25Speaker 1: single day I'm alive for the last five six years
- 12:30Speaker 1: I have used are these odd Socks Basics. Now, what
- 12:33Speaker 1: odd Socks is doing is they're kind of reinventing the
- 12:35Speaker 1: sock game, if we're being honest, and the underwear game.
- 12:37Speaker 1: You know, a lot of times you'll hit Walmart, you'll
- 12:39Speaker 1: hit Target, you'll get some socks, you get some draws.
- 12:42Speaker 1: They're affordable, they end up with holes in them, they
- 12:45Speaker 1: don't really feel great. Not odd Socks, ladies and genmen.
- 12:48Speaker 1: These odd Socks Basics are the most comfortable socks I've
- 12:51Speaker 1: ever had on my feet. Not only that, but you're
- 12:55Speaker 1: super affordable. Fourteen ninety nine for a six pack. That's
- 12:59Speaker 1: it oddsocks dot Com. And if you don't believe me,
- 13:05Speaker 1: sock check full. Wait, that's the ex is on the
- 13:08Speaker 1: other side.
- 13:09Speaker 3: There we go.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Ah, you see that.
- 13:13Speaker 1: Sorry you had to see those white legs. But it's
- 13:16Speaker 1: so dope that, you know, I get to push a
- 13:19Speaker 1: product that I use and that I love, so odd
- 13:21Speaker 1: Socks they got the six pack of socks for fourteen
- 13:24Speaker 1: ninety nine at odd socks dot com. The basics, This
- 13:26Speaker 1: is the future of socks, the future of underwear comfort
- 13:31Speaker 1: and affordability. I'm talking about affordability without jeopardizing the quality
- 13:36Speaker 1: because they are the most comfortable socks you ever put
- 13:38Speaker 1: on your feet.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Ladies and gents, uh and the ETCeteras.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Got to show love to the ETCeteras. We like all
- 13:43Speaker 1: the stripes on the flag. There are odd socks dot com.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Man much love to my brothers over there. Make sure
- 13:48Speaker 1: you get some right now, odd socks dot Com. Let's
- 13:51Speaker 1: get back to the interview. Can you guys tell me
- 13:53Speaker 1: about like how how did when did y'all decide as
- 13:57Speaker 1: like a collective that like Native Tongues was like a
- 13:59Speaker 1: thing thing like because I'm sure it was just.
- 14:01Speaker 4: Naturally are anything that never happened.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But like you know, obviously the name who comes up
- 14:07Speaker 1: with that name?
- 14:10Speaker 5: The name originally though Africa did only because when I
- 14:13Speaker 5: got to Africa's house tit was there walking doing whatever,
- 14:19Speaker 5: and Tip immediately is like your ass, tell post what
- 14:23Speaker 5: we were talking about earlier, And then I'm like what
- 14:25Speaker 5: And then that's what Africa's like, Yo. We're thinking like
- 14:28Speaker 5: whenever we do stuff together, instead of listening listen listing
- 14:33Speaker 5: everyone's names as groups, let's just be under one name
- 14:36Speaker 5: called Native Tongue I say, wow, that's dope. Why And
- 14:40Speaker 5: he was like, yo, because we all speak kind of
- 14:42Speaker 5: like the same language and that's a native to each other.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I was like, Yo, that's a dope idea. We went
- 14:47Speaker 2: back and.
- 14:48Speaker 5: Told individual cruise. Everyone was with the idea and that
- 14:52Speaker 5: really was it. From there.
- 14:54Speaker 1: We was there. Did you get like, how many records
- 14:58Speaker 1: did you guys work? Because there was suppose to be
- 15:00Speaker 1: like this mythological native tongues project that never.
- 15:04Speaker 4: Fabulous fleas the kids on't seen the five All that
- 15:07Speaker 4: was supposed to take place and just didn't happen. Man,
- 15:11Speaker 4: I don't know everybody. I mean, we all had individual
- 15:16Speaker 4: deals when we came in, and I believe just behind right.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So back then, it's a lot more harder to pull
- 15:25Speaker 2: all that shit together.
- 15:26Speaker 3: Right it was.
- 15:27Speaker 4: It was becoming difficult, and different people had stuff going on.
- 15:32Speaker 4: Latifa had the TV stuff coming, Africa had a movie
- 15:35Speaker 4: at the time, so you know, we was kind of
- 15:38Speaker 4: on board for everything because it was still fresh and
- 15:40Speaker 4: new for us, right, So, but it was just individual,
- 15:45Speaker 4: you know, opportunities that were taking place that people felt
- 15:49Speaker 4: was a little more important to do.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Do you guys ever kind of just look at the
- 15:55Speaker 1: last like twenty years of hip hop and just kind
- 15:57Speaker 1: of see like there's so much day line, so much
- 16:00Speaker 1: of the I mean, you go all the way back
- 16:01Speaker 1: to when he starts coming up, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 16:03Speaker 1: I feel like Kanye is a child in native tongue,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and you know, even like a guy like Tyler the
- 16:08Speaker 1: Creator all these years later, he just his own festivals
- 16:12Speaker 1: this weekend in La.
- 16:13Speaker 2: You know, he's very much. I feel like he definitely
- 16:17Speaker 2: have the native tongue, DNA and him.
- 16:20Speaker 1: But do you guys, do you guys ever you know,
- 16:22Speaker 1: kind of think about y'all's influence on just on this
- 16:25Speaker 1: ship at all.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Like I think about it when I see it, I
- 16:29Speaker 4: recognize it, right, you know. When it comes to the artists,
- 16:33Speaker 4: it's admirable. I love and appreciate it. You know, when
- 16:37Speaker 4: it comes to the industry, it stings a little bit,
- 16:41Speaker 4: you know, because you can see the industry trying to
- 16:44Speaker 4: actually do away with with our style, you know. So yeah,
- 16:53Speaker 4: you start to you see images, but you don't see us,
- 16:56Speaker 4: you know, and that became not so cool.
- 16:59Speaker 5: Yeah for me, I didn't. I didn't pay attention to it.
- 17:02Speaker 5: I mean, it's when people ask ask us about it. Yeah,
- 17:07Speaker 5: then you you pay attention. But we've always just had fun,
- 17:10Speaker 5: man with this music. We were always students of it.
- 17:13Speaker 5: So even when young cats come along, you pay attention
- 17:16Speaker 5: to what they're doing and you're like, Yo, this is dope,
- 17:19Speaker 5: and you can you can see what could be reminiscent
- 17:22Speaker 5: of it, but you still look past that and see
- 17:25Speaker 5: their own spin on things appreciate for us.
- 17:28Speaker 2: So that's always been dope.
- 17:31Speaker 3: It's always been a great relationship, right, Yo.
- 17:35Speaker 2: What was the toughest?
- 17:37Speaker 1: Because I was listening to uh, the Different World Record
- 17:41Speaker 1: and I was just thinking I heard your verses on there,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and I was just thinking, like, how hard of a
- 17:45Speaker 1: how hard that might have been for you to record?
- 17:47Speaker 1: Because there are some emotional, you know, lyrics on this album.
- 17:50Speaker 1: Was how were those sessions?
- 17:52Speaker 5: Like, none of it was hard because we just kind
- 17:57Speaker 5: of like even when it's painful, I just just jumped
- 18:01Speaker 5: right into it because I'm I've always been a really
- 18:04Speaker 5: good writer when it comes to talking about being vulnerable,
- 18:10Speaker 5: something that's not easy to talk about, actually like strive
- 18:14Speaker 5: at that, you know, whether it was I and my be,
- 18:16Speaker 5: whether it's on trying people, you know, talking about my mother, whatever,
- 18:20Speaker 5: it is me messing up in a relationship that I
- 18:24Speaker 5: can do that my eyes closed. So talking about someone
- 18:27Speaker 5: I love like Dave, it came easy.
- 18:31Speaker 3: You know.
- 18:31Speaker 5: I poured one of those out. I couldn't even hold it.
- 18:34Speaker 5: Like when Static Selected needed me on something and I
- 18:37Speaker 5: was like, Yo, can I talk about day on this?
- 18:39Speaker 5: Like I So that's easy for me. It's it's not hard.
- 18:42Speaker 5: I mean writing Cabin in the Sky the title track, Yeah,
- 18:46Speaker 5: I was crying when I was writing it, but it
- 18:48Speaker 5: came out.
- 18:49Speaker 2: I never had no point needed to step away from it.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I just I think like when you talk about like
- 18:55Speaker 1: being vulnerable as it's kind of been your strength.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And yeah, even like the.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Record you got with Bala, or you're talking about like
- 19:00Speaker 1: when you die you want to have your kids around you.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that shit hit, bro.
- 19:04Speaker 1: I was like, damn, or like what your mom might
- 19:06Speaker 1: think about how like shit you're doing as a man,
- 19:08Speaker 1: Like I'm like Jesus, yes, sir, Yeah, can you guys?
- 19:13Speaker 3: Uh?
- 19:15Speaker 1: You know NAS's involvement in all these projects that have
- 19:17Speaker 1: been coming out. You know, some of my best music
- 19:20Speaker 1: of the year has been a part of the Mass
- 19:22Speaker 1: Appeal UH series, and it's been dope. You guys were
- 19:26Speaker 1: at comic Con. Yeah, comic book was out shout out
- 19:29Speaker 1: to a marble Yeah, but can you just speak how
- 19:32Speaker 1: how it's been just working so closely with Mass Appeal
- 19:35Speaker 1: and obviously you know NAS's on the album Goes Crazy
- 19:38Speaker 1: by the way.
- 19:40Speaker 2: But what what's that been like?
- 19:42Speaker 3: It's been cool. I mean, we've you know cool. Yeah.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Massive Pill been wanting to rock with us for a minute.
- 19:47Speaker 5: I mean even when we did the Anonymous Nobody album,
- 19:50Speaker 5: they put in.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Their bit for it to come out sixteen.
- 19:54Speaker 5: Yeah, so they wanted that we wound up, you know,
- 19:57Speaker 5: rocking the Cobolt. But they've always wanted be in the
- 20:00Speaker 5: business of doing something with us. However it could happen.
- 20:03Speaker 5: So finally, when the Legends thing came up, we you know,
- 20:06Speaker 5: as May said, we were the premium soul in the
- 20:08Speaker 5: Rocks record originally that was already contractually signed with them,
- 20:12Speaker 5: so we owed them an album and so, you know,
- 20:15Speaker 5: but they were very gracious about it. They knew everything
- 20:18Speaker 5: he was going through at one point with Tommy Boy
- 20:19Speaker 5: or when Dave was sick let alone Dave passed, So
- 20:22Speaker 5: when it was time for this early during the year,
- 20:25Speaker 5: they was like, look, man, we would love your involvement
- 20:27Speaker 5: in this legend theory, and we was like, yo, we're
- 20:29Speaker 5: with it. So I mean they've always been really kind
- 20:34Speaker 5: to what we could do and wanted to involve us
- 20:37Speaker 5: in whatever it was. And I mean, getting actually a
- 20:40Speaker 5: little bit closer and being around Nas during this process
- 20:43Speaker 5: has been dope, because Yo, man, it doesn't matter for
- 20:45Speaker 5: me that he's younger than me. Like, it's Nas, you
- 20:48Speaker 5: know what I'm saying. Being around like minded people like
- 20:51Speaker 5: that or Ray and chilling in the studio and seeing
- 20:54Speaker 5: the banter between Ghosts and ray Quand is hilarious, I
- 20:58Speaker 5: can imagine, you know, and and inspirational. You know, these
- 21:02Speaker 5: guys love what we do, we love what they do.
- 21:04Speaker 5: So it's been dope just being around each other on
- 21:07Speaker 5: just some hangout ship like forget this the music, but
- 21:10Speaker 5: hanging out even after Comic Con, just going to to
- 21:13Speaker 5: eat and we're just laughing brothers, a little drunk and
- 21:16Speaker 5: just talking wild and bugging out like it's so much
- 21:19Speaker 5: fun as just people to be around each other.
- 21:22Speaker 3: And the team. The team.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It's a lot of people on the administrative squad that
- 21:27Speaker 4: would either worked that Tommy Boy or Rush or Loud,
- 21:30Speaker 4: you know, So it's what I call the Soul Survivors,
- 21:33Speaker 4: people who I love that who to test the time
- 21:36Speaker 4: and see.
- 21:37Speaker 1: You know, if you guys, because NAS's verse he kind
- 21:41Speaker 1: of fantasizes about being a part of different groups.
- 21:43Speaker 2: Like he says in his verse, which I thought was funny,
- 21:45Speaker 2: easy top was bananas.
- 21:48Speaker 1: If you guys weren't in de Las Soul individually, what
- 21:52Speaker 1: group would y'all be in?
- 21:53Speaker 2: I would be in Gangstar. I love that you and
- 21:56Speaker 2: Guru going back and forth. I would be a Gangstar
- 22:00Speaker 2: without question.
- 22:02Speaker 3: I never thought about that. I don't know think about
- 22:06Speaker 3: it now. Two Life Crew.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Nause No.
- 22:19Speaker 3: But you know, and this is crazy.
- 22:21Speaker 5: The only reason I thought it was because like your style,
- 22:24Speaker 5: I always thought it was dope in New York, because
- 22:27Speaker 5: you know, you know how like Miami really took to that. Yeah,
- 22:30Speaker 5: it really open cuts. And that's the only reason why
- 22:33Speaker 5: I said that.
- 22:34Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I probably I probably went back in time and been
- 22:38Speaker 4: part of like Flashing, the Furious five of Fire.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Who do you think because you're such a you know,
- 22:45Speaker 1: when when we think of you know, jam Master J
- 22:48Speaker 1: or DJ bat Boo, you're you're one of those guys, right,
- 22:53Speaker 1: you are the you are the backbone of your group, right,
- 22:55Speaker 1: And I want to know as as a DJ, as
- 22:59Speaker 1: a producer, sir, who do you look at as somebody
- 23:04Speaker 1: who's a part of a group or even just someone
- 23:07Speaker 1: who's a DJ for an artist where you're just like yo, kudos,
- 23:10Speaker 1: like you're very like you're you're really a part of
- 23:13Speaker 1: this ship. Like because there's so many guys who have
- 23:15Speaker 1: had DJs for twenty years that maybe you know, even
- 23:18Speaker 1: a solo artist where the DJs is so fired, like, yeah,
- 23:21Speaker 1: is there anybody who sticks out when I ask you that?
- 23:24Speaker 4: Of course Master Jay, of course a Prince Paul Chatter
- 23:27Speaker 4: Prince Paul for KG from by Nature.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, man, listen.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Those are the ones that really for me to.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Be an MC, blessed to be an MC and think
- 23:37Speaker 5: of a dope DJ who can then come out from
- 23:40Speaker 5: from just being a DJ and a producer is.
- 23:44Speaker 2: Large professor, large profession DJ.
- 23:47Speaker 5: His ass off and the way he cut records back
- 23:51Speaker 5: and forth is not just cutting him back and forth,
- 23:53Speaker 5: but like he forms like a song out of it.
- 23:56Speaker 3: You'll go from the break, here's a mutant.
- 23:58Speaker 1: Yeah, world, he's one of them, you know who was like,
- 24:02Speaker 1: you know, to be what What was the most recent
- 24:05Speaker 1: viral moment that showed how important having a fire DJ
- 24:07Speaker 1: is was the Locks dipset battle Technician. Yeah that boy yo,
- 24:13Speaker 1: that that ship was as much as his Yeah, it
- 24:20Speaker 1: was showed.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Up for sure. Man.
- 24:23Speaker 2: It's so good man.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Yo.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Were you guys, because you guys always.
- 24:27Speaker 1: Kind of get like attributed with having like psychedelic vibes
- 24:30Speaker 1: to your art, to your aesthetic.
- 24:32Speaker 2: Were you guys doing like any shrooms back in the day?
- 24:35Speaker 1: Man, I'm sure you guys hear that though we heard
- 24:38Speaker 1: yeah a lot, but nah, I.
- 24:41Speaker 3: Would even get off of those things. And like, nah,
- 24:44Speaker 3: beyond rock.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Were you guys smoking a lot back then?
- 24:47Speaker 1: I smoked? We Yeah, for a long time. I never
- 24:50Speaker 1: smoked ever. So what was the inspiration I think about? Like,
- 24:58Speaker 1: I mean, you guys kind of brought color to hip hop.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I feel like colored people. No, no, no, Jesus Jesus Christ,
- 25:06Speaker 1: don't put that on. Don't put that.
- 25:10Speaker 3: No.
- 25:11Speaker 1: I mean just like when I think of like you know,
- 25:13Speaker 1: three feet high and rising and and and just like
- 25:16Speaker 1: that's such a snapshot of music at that time, and
- 25:21Speaker 1: you guys brought that, I mean they turned into a dunk.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Like what was it like you know, can you just
- 25:28Speaker 1: kind of take me back to that creating that album
- 25:31Speaker 1: and just kind of the aesthetic that y'all were on then, like.
- 25:34Speaker 2: We leaned into.
- 25:36Speaker 5: You know, we loved any and everything that was out
- 25:40Speaker 5: at that time. If it was Juice Crew, we loved it.
- 25:43Speaker 5: If it was Rock Him, we loved it. Like too Short,
- 25:47Speaker 5: Too Short, we loved it. But we just as individuals
- 25:51Speaker 5: loved what we loved as well. And how we identified
- 25:55Speaker 5: ourselves Withether, how Mace identified himself as a DJ at
- 25:58Speaker 5: that time, me as an MC, and Day and Me
- 26:00Speaker 5: and Day really ed egged each other on, like to
- 26:03Speaker 5: really lean into like being different. And we you know,
- 26:08Speaker 5: we loved I'm talking about loved Ultramagnetic because they had
- 26:12Speaker 5: the most amazing beats, but they just talked a bit
- 26:16Speaker 5: differently and you and You considered them hard like hard rocks,
- 26:20Speaker 5: but they were like talking with these large, larger than
- 26:23Speaker 5: life words and that spoke to me, and that spoke
- 26:26Speaker 5: to Dave or like how Chuck us three was that
- 26:29Speaker 5: really spoke to us how they talk and so that
- 26:33Speaker 5: it was just something that was just something we knew
- 26:36Speaker 5: that that's what we want to do. When we saw
- 26:37Speaker 5: Bizmarck and he could have the hardest beats but have
- 26:40Speaker 5: fun in it. That spoke to us, you know, so
- 26:45Speaker 5: that is kind of a part of allowing us to
- 26:47Speaker 5: be like, yo, let's give that in what we do.
- 26:51Speaker 2: We loved Koogie Rat, but we just knew we.
- 26:53Speaker 5: Couldn't stand there acting like we're on the block and
- 26:56Speaker 5: we could listen to it, but that just wasn't what
- 26:58Speaker 5: we did, you know.
- 26:59Speaker 1: You know, man, want to give a shout out to
- 27:01Speaker 1: slap Woods for presenting the podcast only papers I smoke
- 27:05Speaker 1: man only leafs that we let fly around here on
- 27:07Speaker 1: the Blue Leg Cap podcast. We just did a crazy
- 27:09Speaker 1: pool party with them too. That was insane out here
- 27:11Speaker 1: in La. So shout out to slap Woods. When I
- 27:14Speaker 1: tell you man quality, They smoke so good, and they're
- 27:19Speaker 1: called slap Woods because they slap I know that's like
- 27:21Speaker 1: their you know, their tagline, but it's also the truth.
- 27:25Speaker 3: All right.
- 27:26Speaker 1: So look, go follow them at slap Woods. Make sure
- 27:28Speaker 1: you hit their website. And if you're at your local

- 27:38Speaker 1: I think pretty soon I want to do we are
- 27:40Speaker 1: going to do this pretty soon I want to do

- 27:44Speaker 1: lookout for that. We'll be announcing it on the podcast.
- 27:47Speaker 1: We're gonna be sending out obviously, you got to be
- 27:48Speaker 1: of age sending out a good box of these goodies. Oh,
- 27:51Speaker 1: the sweeping and cilgar wraps are fire. Slap woods man,
- 27:55Speaker 1: make sure you go show them some up slap woods
- 27:56Speaker 1: dot com, follow them on Instagram at slap woods. Let's
- 28:00Speaker 1: get back to the podcast and then you guys dropped
- 28:02Speaker 1: dassole is Dead? What was like? When did y'all come
- 28:06Speaker 1: up with that title? And because you know what I'm saying,
- 28:09Speaker 1: it's it's kind of like the pendulum swings the other way.
- 28:12Speaker 4: Well, it started with a ridiculous tour schedule that we
- 28:17Speaker 4: saw on the calendar.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Rush like the big board.
- 28:21Speaker 4: Yeah, and Dave, we raced out everywhere, had us on
- 28:25Speaker 4: the calendar. He wrote they lost all his dead on
- 28:29Speaker 4: all the dates and he held on to the title.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Yeah. We laughed so hard right there.
- 28:36Speaker 4: We was like, yeah, wow, he held it in his head.
- 28:46Speaker 2: I like easy instead of pause, easy, like no commodores?
- 28:52Speaker 3: What was uh?
- 28:54Speaker 1: Because I feel like the imagery of the cover with
- 28:57Speaker 1: the flower pot being tipped over.
- 28:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Man, it was just about you know.
- 29:02Speaker 5: And it was like an evolution in a sense, like
- 29:04Speaker 5: when once we realized like the title itself just sounded
- 29:07Speaker 5: cool for whatever reason to us, then we start putting
- 29:10Speaker 5: meaning beyond it behind it, Like death was an evolution
- 29:13Speaker 5: maybe to the next plane. So he was like, yo,
- 29:15Speaker 5: let's bring the look of the aesthetic of the first
- 29:20Speaker 5: album and what people was putting on us to an end,
- 29:22Speaker 5: because we're just going to move on to something else.
- 29:26Speaker 4: The whole Daisy age concept was getting misconstrued, right, and
- 29:30Speaker 4: it was putting this image on us that.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Could have heard us maybe even put you in a box.
- 29:36Speaker 4: Yeah, and it could have hurt us over the long run,
- 29:38Speaker 4: you know. So it was best that we killed it
- 29:41Speaker 4: before it killed us.
- 29:43Speaker 3: You know.
- 29:44Speaker 2: And I mean the label was scared of us doing that.
- 29:46Speaker 2: It's like, why would.
- 29:47Speaker 3: You do that? Did you guys go away?
- 29:49Speaker 5: And why would you say Daylight so is dead? Like
- 29:51Speaker 5: how could you do that? And he was like, because
- 29:54Speaker 5: we can, that's what we want to do. And it
- 29:55Speaker 5: was like, look, these new guys PM don they just
- 29:59Speaker 5: came out on arrest development. They're gonna take what you
- 30:02Speaker 5: did and they're gonna run with it. Well, it was like,
- 30:04Speaker 5: well let him run because we're not doing that again.
- 30:07Speaker 1: You know, you guys are kind of like the inventors
- 30:10Speaker 1: of the skit, if you will.
- 30:13Speaker 2: When did you guys just say that should be its
- 30:17Speaker 2: own thing?
- 30:18Speaker 4: Like?
- 30:18Speaker 1: That's because because if you think about, like at the time,
- 30:22Speaker 1: like a skit's not a thing.
- 30:24Speaker 2: Nah, that's a wild thing to give a track to
- 30:26Speaker 2: on a CD. You know, it was just something natural, man.
- 30:30Speaker 3: It was from the first thing.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Yeah, even before that, like even when we would just
- 30:35Speaker 5: be in the house. Skits originated for us because we
- 30:38Speaker 5: were clowning around when we should have been rehearsing. Right,
- 30:41Speaker 5: So if Mace's DJAN and we should be me and
- 30:44Speaker 5: Dave should be trying to say our rhyme, Dave start
- 30:48Speaker 5: clowning around as Mace's DJ, and he'll just start trying
- 30:50Speaker 5: to talk.
- 30:51Speaker 3: And the record button is on on.
- 30:53Speaker 5: And he's trying to talk another language, or act like
- 30:56Speaker 5: he's Irish, or do something silly, and then it just
- 30:59Speaker 5: wanted to As May said, we wouldn't erase it, and
- 31:02Speaker 5: we just start compiling all this clowning around on tape.
- 31:07Speaker 5: That's yeah, that was it. Smile and the smiles I'm bugging.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Prince Paul heard it, and then Prince Paul would show
- 31:16Speaker 5: us like, yo, like this is crazy because this is
- 31:18Speaker 5: what me and my friends do. And he put in
- 31:20Speaker 5: like videotapes of him and his friend's overdubbing karate flicks.
- 31:25Speaker 5: So we just realized we had this thing in common
- 31:29Speaker 5: of this this funny style of things to do. So
- 31:31Speaker 5: once we got the deal, we kept that. Like that
- 31:36Speaker 5: skit that's on the first single, where was that the
- 31:41Speaker 5: Dan Stucky thing? That was just something that was already done.
- 31:45Speaker 5: We didn't make it for a single. We didn't make
- 31:47Speaker 5: it for the single. We just thought, for some crazy reason,
- 31:50Speaker 5: let's put this on this twelve inch. Once we tried
- 31:53Speaker 5: it on that twelve inch and we start getting results
- 31:56Speaker 5: of people loving it, then it was like, well, let's
- 31:59Speaker 5: do it again and then forget it for the album.
- 32:01Speaker 2: It was just like, Okay, this is what we do.
- 32:03Speaker 2: We add this and songs to what we do.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Was there ever a something that started out as a
- 32:08Speaker 1: skit that sparked a song like It's.
- 32:11Speaker 5: Hard to say, because I mean, a skit for us
- 32:14Speaker 5: can be a song, like even on a new album,
- 32:16Speaker 5: this new album will be as a skit to me,
- 32:18Speaker 5: but someone will be like it's a song. It was
- 32:20Speaker 5: a skit made to set up the packs record. I
- 32:24Speaker 5: knew that I wanted to have something with fast and
- 32:27Speaker 5: it needed to slow down.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And literally like, Yo, why is it slowing down? Because
- 32:31Speaker 1: the next song will yeah start.
- 32:32Speaker 5: That's the only reason why I made that, for no
- 32:34Speaker 5: other reason. And then when I found the exact record
- 32:38Speaker 5: that I thought it could be great to do it with,
- 32:41Speaker 5: we did it so skits for us always could. I
- 32:43Speaker 5: mean like hay Love on Daylight Always Dead. That was
- 32:46Speaker 5: a skit, but it was long enough to be a song.
- 32:48Speaker 1: What's your guys' favorite non album Daylight record? Because you
- 32:52Speaker 1: guys have so many, Like, uh, what was the Trouble
- 32:56Speaker 1: in the Water on the Honda album?
- 32:58Speaker 2: I had some shit.
- 32:59Speaker 1: That's a beautiful What y'all favorite record that that didn't
- 33:01Speaker 1: end up on a day last soul album?
- 33:03Speaker 3: Oh wow? Feva Chanel Chanel number number of Fever.
- 33:11Speaker 2: That's the record high school high track.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Nope, that was on the Men in.
- 33:18Speaker 2: Black Night, the first Men in Black, Men and Black.
- 33:21Speaker 3: It was first Man in Black.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Hey, nice check for that. There's a video for that too, right, nah, just.
- 33:27Speaker 3: The song is on there.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, And I think they played back when soundtracks
- 33:32Speaker 2: were great.
- 33:32Speaker 4: Play at the end of the movie, like when he
- 33:35Speaker 4: started to go through some of the soundtrack.
- 33:38Speaker 3: That's the record.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah yeah.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Can you guys tell me on this project, because this project,
- 33:43Speaker 1: like I said, man, it's up there with the best albums.
- 33:47Speaker 1: I feel like when people hear it comes out tomorrow, no,
- 33:49Speaker 1: Thursday night in l A, Friday.
- 33:52Speaker 2: The twenty first, whenever that is.
- 33:54Speaker 3: Friday midnight wherever you are on the twenty first.
- 33:57Speaker 1: And I'm sure it changes for you guys, But which
- 33:59Speaker 1: each one of y'alls, like, what's your guys' favorite song?
- 34:02Speaker 5: It really is how you said it one moment. I
- 34:06Speaker 5: could be on this these four songs for a week
- 34:10Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden, I remember another song
- 34:12Speaker 5: and I just I always just laugh, not laugh, but
- 34:15Speaker 5: smile that. That's such a great place to be with.
- 34:19Speaker 5: You really love your own album. So, I mean, one
- 34:23Speaker 5: I could say is running.
- 34:24Speaker 2: Back without without a question.
- 34:26Speaker 5: I mean I just loved it when it was just
- 34:28Speaker 5: an instrumental with nothing on it. Different world hits different
- 34:33Speaker 5: for me. I love that a lot. You don't stop.
- 34:36Speaker 5: I just absolutely love it's just a lot.
- 34:40Speaker 2: It's a lot. It's a lot of different ones on it.
- 34:42Speaker 4: For me.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Ask a quick sixteen for Mama with kill a Mike. Yeah,
- 34:46Speaker 2: that shit was creazy.
- 34:47Speaker 3: I love that record.
- 34:48Speaker 2: Yeah, what about.
- 34:49Speaker 4: You running back quick sixteen for Mama. I always forget
- 34:55Speaker 4: the title of this one.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Just how it is?
- 34:59Speaker 3: Sometimes, just how it is? Sometimes that's my joint.
- 35:02Speaker 1: Yeah, if you guys could put together, you're like twenty
- 35:09Speaker 1: twenty five version of Day Last Soul with artists who
- 35:13Speaker 1: are current.
- 35:14Speaker 2: Who would fit the mold? Who would you guys plug in?
- 35:20Speaker 3: They gotta be like really new, new new.
- 35:22Speaker 2: I mean, look, let's say the last you know, fifteen
- 35:24Speaker 2: twenty years Oh, then that's easy that Tyler Earle jid
- 35:31Speaker 2: someone else, I would say.
- 35:34Speaker 3: A little bit more.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Harder, absol. J Cole, not in mine, Absol. I like this,
- 35:44Speaker 2: shout out the solo man. That brother is crazy. Yeah,
- 35:50Speaker 2: I think that's a good one for me.
- 35:51Speaker 3: You know, what about you? I can't really call it.
- 35:55Speaker 2: Anybody who he left out besides j Cole.
- 36:00Speaker 3: Mm hmm you said in the last fifteen mm hmm
- 36:04Speaker 3: hmmm Anderson.
- 36:07Speaker 2: Pack, Oh Anderson be nice.
- 36:11Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 36:12Speaker 5: That man even knowledge when they do the so man,
- 36:24Speaker 5: I just would be the Prince Paul like he was.
- 36:26Speaker 5: I should be really dope.
- 36:28Speaker 3: My brain is?
- 36:30Speaker 1: I always wondered obviously Q Tips on the new album,
- 36:33Speaker 1: you guys have such a brotherhood with Tip and recipes
- 36:36Speaker 1: to Fife, and we think.
- 36:38Speaker 2: About Tribe, we think about Daylight.
- 36:39Speaker 1: You guys are synonymous with each other, like I can
- 36:43Speaker 1: only imagine, because I'm sure you guys were just in
- 36:45Speaker 1: the studio with each other all the time. What was
- 36:48Speaker 1: it like ever like a friendly rivalry between you guys,
- 36:51Speaker 1: because it was just like it had to be.
- 36:52Speaker 2: Like a you know, steel sharp and steel.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Yeah really, but in a real friendly like for me
- 36:58Speaker 5: and I like I can't even speak for me.
- 37:01Speaker 2: For me, it was like inspiration.
- 37:03Speaker 5: Like when I would be around Q Tip and he
- 37:05Speaker 5: could just play me something that is so crazy and
- 37:09Speaker 5: have the nerve to then erase it in front of me.
- 37:12Speaker 5: I would be like, Yo, this dude is crazy. If
- 37:15Speaker 5: he know he just can just sit on stuff like
- 37:17Speaker 5: that that he can just erase a beat, I gotta
- 37:19Speaker 5: get my ship together. Like that's what it was for me.
- 37:22Speaker 5: I was just really inspired around him in Africa because
- 37:25Speaker 5: those dudes was like really really dope to me.
- 37:28Speaker 4: So yeah, I'm always inspired by Tip. Actually stopped coming
- 37:33Speaker 4: to the studio because of that, because you hear one
- 37:36Speaker 4: thing and you fall in love with it and then
- 37:38Speaker 4: it's totally something else or it didn't make the album.
- 37:42Speaker 4: So after the after the second album with Tribe, I
- 37:44Speaker 4: stopped showing up.
- 37:46Speaker 3: I wait, I wait to finish.
- 37:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, because you want to hear to finished product.
- 37:50Speaker 5: I mean, it's just too many to name, Like everything
- 37:55Speaker 5: is fair, like the original to everything is fair.
- 37:59Speaker 4: Like you hear on the record is not. That was
- 38:02Speaker 4: one of the songs broke my heart. I love what's
- 38:06Speaker 4: on the record, but the original in the studio it was.
- 38:11Speaker 1: It's interesting because if you go back to like early
- 38:14Speaker 1: nineties New York hip hop, you know, you guys kind
- 38:17Speaker 1: of laid the the groundwork and then it kind of
- 38:21Speaker 1: feels like, you know, we always have like these I
- 38:24Speaker 1: would say, like kind of like weird divisions in hip hop,
- 38:27Speaker 1: people's styles, people's you know, movements, and I can only imagine.
- 38:30Speaker 1: So you guys are coming up, tribes coming up. Obviously
- 38:34Speaker 1: public enemy is already a thing, and then you get
- 38:37Speaker 1: like Wu Tang Nas Biggie later totally different vibe but
- 38:43Speaker 1: it's kind of crazy that y'all didn't like mesh more
- 38:47Speaker 1: together then, was it? Because y'all were just kind of
- 38:49Speaker 1: on like they obviously Wu Tang was on some street
- 38:51Speaker 1: shit like.
- 38:52Speaker 4: Nah, the industry was just changing, man, things were actually changing,
- 38:57Speaker 4: and everybody was moving according to the change.
- 39:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:00Speaker 5: Because outside of that, we we all hung around each other, right,
- 39:05Speaker 5: I mean, Rizza loved principle, he loved us.
- 39:07Speaker 2: He would I mean, yeah, he would always be around us.
- 39:11Speaker 5: But yeah, like as May said when we started in
- 39:14Speaker 5: eighty nine, yeah, if Wu Tang and Nasingham was out,
- 39:17Speaker 5: then we would all been on tour together.
- 39:19Speaker 2: It's just changed. First, Yeah, it just changed that.
- 39:22Speaker 5: By the time they were prevalent, they the system was
- 39:27Speaker 5: set up like someone who has to be exactly like
- 39:30Speaker 5: Wu Tang will be together with them, you know, like
- 39:32Speaker 5: rough Riders will be I don't know if someone who's
- 39:36Speaker 5: got the same energy as them opposed to them being
- 39:39Speaker 5: with daily.
- 39:39Speaker 4: Yeah, you see rough riders and maybe Rockefellers like that,
- 39:42Speaker 4: right right, right, So they start marrying synonymous groups as
- 39:46Speaker 4: opposed to mixing a bunch of different fruit together, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 4: which where we come from, we was all mixed up
- 39:54Speaker 4: we was mixed.
- 39:55Speaker 5: Dean on a tour of run ding m C like
- 39:58Speaker 5: you know more style oldest stick with Fudini running seas
- 40:03Speaker 5: rough around the edges. But they were on tour together
- 40:05Speaker 5: right but it was like if they were still together
- 40:08Speaker 5: in the era we came in, they would have never
- 40:10Speaker 5: been near each other like Wodini would have been with
- 40:12Speaker 5: like heavy d.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Right right right right right right there. And we toured
- 40:16Speaker 3: with l n W A two short cane select wreck.
- 40:22Speaker 1: D o C.
- 40:23Speaker 2: We all loved the one room so crazy, Yeah, what's
- 40:27Speaker 2: the n W?
- 40:28Speaker 3: What's what like?
- 40:29Speaker 2: Being like on tour and we had the best to
- 40:33Speaker 2: this day, the best live that's.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Possible for they live show and.
- 40:39Speaker 2: They inspired have the best the best way.
- 40:45Speaker 4: Knowing how to be n W A know how to
- 40:49Speaker 4: turn a dead room into a very live atmosphere like
- 40:53Speaker 4: to be to come in the room and people are
- 40:56Speaker 4: just sitting.
- 40:57Speaker 3: They know how to go from the top.
- 40:59Speaker 5: It would be like I would even to this day,
- 41:01Speaker 5: funny enough, I've never asked them like I would just
- 41:03Speaker 5: want to know how or who taught them to be
- 41:07Speaker 5: so on point with their live show because for them
- 41:10Speaker 5: to be so many people they even broke that up
- 41:14Speaker 5: d C first Yellow and dre Q by himself didn't
- 41:20Speaker 5: eat like they they gave you doses of themselves and
- 41:23Speaker 5: then and.
- 41:23Speaker 2: Then the whole.
- 41:25Speaker 4: It was just crazy. They had such great show that
- 41:29Speaker 4: they had thirty minutes. They could pull all all together
- 41:33Speaker 4: in thirty minutes, and it was insane.
- 41:36Speaker 5: They had to broad They had to Broadway play aspect
- 41:40Speaker 5: like prostitutes walking with props up in like manhole, like
- 41:45Speaker 5: they came out of the manhole, like they.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Had DJ on two garbage can Yo.
- 41:49Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 41:50Speaker 3: It's crazy, you know, like poles set up and holes
- 41:53Speaker 3: on the corner. Are you kicking it backstage on? Because
- 41:57Speaker 3: I can just imagine, like, because obviously Q.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Did a really good job of like you know, going
- 42:03Speaker 1: to New York and working on was most wanted, but
- 42:05Speaker 1: that was, you know a little bit later on shore.
- 42:07Speaker 1: But I can just imagine how crazy it to have
- 42:09Speaker 1: been if would have got he was working on that
- 42:11Speaker 1: y'all's world together.
- 42:12Speaker 5: But he was working on that then because we didn't
- 42:15Speaker 5: know that they had issues and all that, right, because
- 42:17Speaker 5: Cbe me and him went to the mall during that
- 42:19Speaker 5: tour in eighty nine and he he kicked me to
- 42:22Speaker 5: run till little boys and girls.
- 42:24Speaker 2: They all know me. He went through all that.
- 42:26Speaker 5: I was like, Yo, that's crazy, that's forys something I'm
- 42:29Speaker 5: working on.
- 42:30Speaker 2: So he already developing at that point.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Did you guys ever flirt with like doing a session together,
- 42:36Speaker 1: Like see if you guys cooked some shit up, would
- 42:37Speaker 1: a love to? I mean I'm a lot harder back then,
- 42:39Speaker 1: by the way. Yeah, because your studio, you could pull
- 42:42Speaker 1: the studio over the hotel on the.
- 42:43Speaker 3: Box exactly exactly.
- 42:45Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like real to real days, you know, trying
- 42:47Speaker 1: to find a studio on some random city and like, you.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Know, I'm sure it's not as easy.
- 42:52Speaker 1: Hey, we got to wrap up this interview, another one
- 42:54Speaker 1: presented by hard Dang baby, you already know what it is.

- 43:09Speaker 1: the craziest gas you could ever ask for, and then

- 43:15Speaker 1: Go to Harden Underscore Las Vegas. Shoot them a follow
- 43:18Speaker 1: and when you're in Las Vegas and make sure you
- 43:19Speaker 1: shoot them a visit. Hey, don't forget to go to
- 43:21Speaker 1: bootleg keV dot com. You know, we had to celebrate

- 43:26Speaker 2: Throw the shirt up so you could see it. I
- 43:28Speaker 2: turned it down.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Shout out to that boy Big Boogie, a big college
- 43:31Speaker 1: in Jacksonville.
- 43:32Speaker 2: And we just threw these.
- 43:33Speaker 1: On sale half off for the five hundred episode t
- 43:37Speaker 1: bootleg keV dot com.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Go get you a shirt. Let's get back to the interview.
- 43:40Speaker 1: You guys are on. You know, one of the coolest
- 43:43Speaker 1: songs ever. You know, I think about today's world in
- 43:48Speaker 1: which there's artists who are thinking about the gorillas. Obviously
- 43:53Speaker 1: the gorillas are like kind of the you know, shots
- 43:55Speaker 1: of the gorillas, But Bill Good Inc. Was such a
- 43:56Speaker 1: big song, and like, how did y'all get pitched there?
- 44:01Speaker 1: The idea?
- 44:03Speaker 5: Just friends who knew them and us and they just
- 44:06Speaker 5: start asking like, yo, would you would you ever want
- 44:09Speaker 5: to work with the gorilla? And he's like, oh, you
- 44:11Speaker 5: mean the dude who worked with Dell.
- 44:12Speaker 3: I was like.
- 44:13Speaker 5: Yeah, And from there I guess they let them know
- 44:17Speaker 5: and it just kind of started from that point.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Did you guys know it was going to be like
- 44:20Speaker 2: a cartoon group.
- 44:22Speaker 5: We knew the cartoon group only because they had from
- 44:24Speaker 5: when they did the first album and Dell was on
- 44:27Speaker 5: that guy.
- 44:28Speaker 4: And hotly did a DJ toy with Danny Ortman, who
- 44:32Speaker 4: produced that song.
- 44:35Speaker 3: And learning all of that.
- 44:36Speaker 1: I feel like, like low key, like what's kind of
- 44:38Speaker 1: going on right now? Where you got like writers like
- 44:40Speaker 1: kind of doing the AI thing. It's kind of like
- 44:42Speaker 1: in a weird way, like prophetic what the Gorillas did.
- 44:46Speaker 5: Yeah, no, without question, and I mean, you know, Damon
- 44:49Speaker 5: meeting him, it was just just.
- 44:52Speaker 2: You know, we just became like family after that.
- 44:56Speaker 5: I mean, he was such a great musician, great creative mind,
- 45:02Speaker 5: willing to work and try and do anything even when
- 45:06Speaker 5: he and he reminds me a lot of cute tip
- 45:07Speaker 5: like even when he has the smash, he's like, all right,
- 45:10Speaker 5: but let me see how it is if I do
- 45:12Speaker 5: a variant cover, let me flip it another way. Your
- 45:14Speaker 5: mates try to add this, do that, blah blah blah.
- 45:17Speaker 5: Like That's how he was, and it was just we
- 45:19Speaker 5: just love that about him. So from that point on, man,
- 45:22Speaker 5: we just became like family.
- 45:25Speaker 3: You know.
- 45:25Speaker 1: During One of my favorite verses that happened during the
- 45:29Speaker 1: pandemic was the Primo Risen one, And I remember that
- 45:32Speaker 1: one like made me think like could they assa on tribe,
- 45:36Speaker 1: do like a friendly fun versus did they ever hit
- 45:39Speaker 1: you guys up?
- 45:41Speaker 5: It floated around. I mean, you know, it floated around,
- 45:46Speaker 5: and not that we would have had an issue with it.
- 45:48Speaker 5: I just didn't think it would happen. You know, I'm
- 45:50Speaker 5: being honest. I didn't think it would happen because I know, like.
- 45:54Speaker 2: It doesn't feel like the kind of thing Tip would
- 45:55Speaker 2: do it all. Tip don't like to be outside let alone.
- 45:59Speaker 5: You're just doing that without having the artillery of his
- 46:02Speaker 5: man like fight.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Worse, it makes it a lot different.
- 46:05Speaker 1: So yeah, I think I was just thinking when it
- 46:08Speaker 1: was like the IG live version and fools were like
- 46:11Speaker 1: at the.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Crib just playing ship.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that was my favorite versus era what it was
- 46:16Speaker 1: like super like we're stuck at home, everyone's got rubber gloves.
- 46:21Speaker 3: When we go to the groceries.
- 46:23Speaker 1: What a wild time, wild time Man. Obviously, with this
- 46:27Speaker 1: new album Man Cabin in the Sky, it is you know,
- 46:31Speaker 1: like I said, it's just it's such a beautiful tribute
- 46:34Speaker 1: to Dave. You know, when you guys initially start playing
- 46:40Speaker 1: these records for people who are close, Uh what what
- 46:46Speaker 1: is some of the reactions you're getting, you know, because
- 46:48Speaker 1: I can imagine they got to be emotional, they got
- 46:50Speaker 1: I mean so.
- 46:52Speaker 4: Right, okay, the reactions. I mean, I made sure I
- 46:55Speaker 4: got it to the homies we grew up with, you know.
- 46:57Speaker 4: I did a zoom call played the record for all
- 47:01Speaker 4: the homies that definitely stuck really close to Dave, especially
- 47:04Speaker 4: when he would come off the road. So I got
- 47:06Speaker 4: the opportunity to play it for them, and they cried.
- 47:11Speaker 4: A lot of them were like thank you. I'm going
- 47:14Speaker 4: to tell you this too. It was like, I know
- 47:16Speaker 4: the Monarchs is thank you Dave, but there was like
- 47:19Speaker 4: thank you, Mace, thank you pass. It was like it
- 47:23Speaker 4: helped give them closure, you know, because a lot of
- 47:27Speaker 4: them was with him the night before he passed, so
- 47:31Speaker 4: it threw them off knowing like they just had a
- 47:35Speaker 4: ill conversation, laughing and joking and wake up the next
- 47:38Speaker 4: day he was gone. So it was a big void
- 47:41Speaker 4: for a few of the homies and the record gave
- 47:44Speaker 4: them closure. Definitely therapeutic, you know, it hit all the
- 47:51Speaker 4: emotions of joy and pain. Yeah, you know, so you
- 47:54Speaker 4: know it was. It's one for the books for everybody
- 47:58Speaker 4: to who who really loved Dave?
- 48:01Speaker 2: Was this closure for you guys too? You feel like
- 48:03Speaker 2: at least some help.
- 48:04Speaker 4: Definitely therapeutic. I can't really say closure, but therapeutic knowing
- 48:11Speaker 4: we had more plans and we still, you know, gonna
- 48:16Speaker 4: continue to these plans we had.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, it's definitely not closure for me, but
- 48:20Speaker 5: because but it's not like for it to be so
- 48:23Speaker 5: called open that I have a negative or disagreeable issue
- 48:28Speaker 5: with Dave.
- 48:29Speaker 2: I you know, just losing my mom at an early age.
- 48:33Speaker 5: My my relationship with death has just been different since
- 48:37Speaker 5: age eighteen.
- 48:38Speaker 2: So, I mean, Dave's right next to me. That's how
- 48:40Speaker 2: I always looked at it from the Yeah, I mean
- 48:42Speaker 2: that's how you talk about it, this project.
- 48:45Speaker 5: Yeah, so it's it wasn't a closure thing for me.
- 48:48Speaker 5: It's just a mission that I'm on just to make
- 48:51Speaker 5: sure like no one could and I know no one
- 48:53Speaker 5: could ever forget him. So that's even selfish to say
- 48:56Speaker 5: his niggas l So no one's gonna forget him. I'm
- 48:59Speaker 5: just down and still be right there with them. Rocking
- 49:02Speaker 5: and making sure that Daylight keeps it going.
- 49:04Speaker 1: Are you guys gonna tour? Yeah, because a woman this
- 49:11Speaker 1: music is going to be like you know, no, definitely, I.
- 49:13Speaker 4: Mean it's definitely plans to implement the new music and
- 49:16Speaker 4: the show. Well, we always stayed toring. I think people
- 49:20Speaker 4: are finally gonna pay attention that we've been out there, right,
- 49:24Speaker 4: so you know, come on out and check us out.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I wonder you guys have so many errors of y'all's career,
