- 0:12Some people spend their lives trying to build a monument to themselves,
- 0:17while others are willing to become a stepping stone for
- 0:21someone else. William Bradford belonged to that second group.
- 0:25He crossed an ocean, endured unimaginable loss, helped establish
- 0:30a colony, and spent decades leading people through uncertainty.
- 0:34Yet, when Bradford described the purpose behind it all, he did not speak primarily
- 0:39of personal freedom, political influence, or even building a new nation.
- 0:42He spoke of advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 0:47One of the most remarkable things he ever wrote was that he and his fellow
- 0:51Pilgrims were willing to be nothing more than stepping stones
- 0:54unto others who would continue that great work.
- 0:58That is a powerful way to look at a life.
- 1:01Welcome to Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm your host,
- 1:05Greg Dowdy. Today we travel back more than 400
- 1:09years to one of the most famous voyages in American history.
- 1:13But our focus is not simply on the Mayflower or the
- 1:17founding of Plymouth Colony. Instead, we look at the faith of one man William
- 1:21Bradford, one of the men who helped lead that remarkable group of
- 1:25believers. William Bradford was born in
- 1:29England in 1589. As a young man,
- 1:32he became deeply troubled by the spiritual corruption he saw
- 1:36around him. By the age of 18, his convictions were already
- 1:39costing him something. He believed that God's people should worship according to the
- 1:44Word of God rather than simply conforming to the religious expectations
- 1:48of the culture. Those convictions eventually led Bradford and
- 1:52others first to Holland and then across the Atlantic
- 1:56aboard the Mayflower in 1620. We often remember the Mayflower
- 2:00as one of history's great voyages, but it was
- 2:04hardly a comfortable adventure. The crossing was difficult,
- 2:08the future was uncertain, and when the Pilgrims
- 2:12arrived in the New World, suffering was waiting for them.
- 2:16Of the 102 passengers who made the voyage,
- 2:20only 56 survived that first winter.
- 2:23Imagine watching nearly half of the people around you
- 2:27die within a matter of months. Bradford knew personal
- 2:31grief as well. His wife Dorothy died after
- 2:35falling from the Mayflower into the cold waters of Plymouth Harbor.
- 2:38Yet through hardship, death, uncertainty, and responsibility,
- 2:42Bradford continued to trust the Lord. He later wrote of
- 2:46the Pilgrims that the difficulties they faced did not dismay
- 2:49them, though they certainly troubled them. Why?
- 2:53Because, he said, their desires were set on the ways
- 2:57of God, and they rested on his providence and knew whom
- 3:02they had believed. There is a tremendous difference between being troubled
- 3:07and being dismayed. Faith does not mean that trouble does not affect
- 3:12us. Christians feel sorrow. We experience disappointments.
- 3:16We face uncertainties. There are moments when circumstances
- 3:19weigh heavily upon our hearts. But trouble does
- 3:23not have to determine our direction.
- 3:26Bradford and the Pilgrims were troubled, but they were not turned aside.
- 3:30Their circumstances were difficult, but their desires
- 3:34were fixed. They rested on his providence and
- 3:38knew whom they had believed. That is a truth
- 3:41worth carrying with us today. When you can't understand
- 3:46what God is doing in your life, you can still trust the God
- 3:50who is doing it. After the death of John Carver,
- 3:53Bradford became governor of Plymouth Colony while still only in his early
- 3:5630s. With only a few brief interruptions, he would serve
- 4:00in that role for decades. What enabled him to endure such responsibility?
- 4:05Again and again, Bradford's writings reveal a mind saturated
- 4:09with Scripture. Biblical languages, biblical principles,
- 4:14and confidence in the providence of God appeared throughout all of his writings.
- 4:18That brings us back to Joshua 1:8.
- 4:21God told Joshua that his word was not to depart from his mouth.
- 4:25He was to meditate upon it day and night, and most importantly,
- 4:29observe to do according to all that is written therein.
- 4:33God's Word was not simply something Joshua was supposed
- 4:37to know; it was something he was supposed to live.
- 4:40The same must be true of us. It's possible to own
- 4:43a Bible and not be governed by it. It is possible
- 4:47to hear preaching every week and still allow the culture to shape our
- 4:51thinking. It is possible to know what Scripture says
- 4:54without actually changing and arranging our lives around
- 4:58what God has said. Bradford and his fellow believers understood that
- 5:03following Scripture might cost them something. They wrote of
- 5:06their determination to walk in all his ways made
- 5:10known whatsoever it should cost them.
- 5:12Whatsoever it should cost them— that phrase challenges
- 5:16me. We naturally ask, what will obedience cost
- 5:20me? Perhaps a better question is, what will disobedience
- 5:25cost if I refuse to follow God? Biblical conviction
- 5:28is not merely believing something strongly. It is being so
- 5:32convinced that God is right that we are
- 5:35willing to obey him regardless of the consequences.
- 5:39But there was something else behind the Pilgrims' journey that deserves our attention.
- 5:44Bradford explained that they possessed a great hope and inward
- 5:48zeal for the propagating and advancing the gospel
- 5:51of the kingdom of Christ in those remote parts of the world. And then
- 5:55he added this remarkable statement: they were willing to be even
- 5:59as stepping stones unto others for the performing of so great
- 6:03a work. Think about that. A stepping stone is not
- 6:07the destination. It simply helps someone else
- 6:11get further down the path. But Bradford understood that
- 6:15he might never see everything God intended to accomplish through
- 6:19his life. And neither will we. Some prayers
- 6:23we have prayed may be answered after we are gone.
- 6:27Some seeds that we plant may be harvested by another generation.
- 6:32Some people we influence may carry the gospel farther
- 6:36than we ever could. Some work that we begin
- 6:41may be completed by someone whose name we will never
- 6:44know, and that is perfectly all right.
- 6:47You see, the goal of the Christian life is not to make sure people remember
- 6:51our name. It is to make sure they know his name.
- 6:55So perhaps Bradford's life leaves us with 3 simple challenges.
- 6:59First, let God's word govern your life.
- 7:03Don't just admire scripture. Meditate upon it.
- 7:07Believe it. Obey it. Build your decisions,
- 7:10your convictions, your priorities upon what God has said.
- 7:15Second, trust God's providence in difficult
- 7:18seasons. You may be troubled without being dismayed,
- 7:22and when you cannot see the way ahead, rest in the God
- 7:26who already knows the end from the beginning. And finally,
- 7:30give your life to something eternal. Every one of us
- 7:34is spending our life on something.
- 7:37Time is passing, years are moving, Opportunities are disappearing,
- 7:42so connect your life to the work of God.
- 7:45Share the gospel. Invest in people. Teach your children
- 7:49and grandchildren the word of God. Encourage another believer.
- 7:53Support those carrying the gospel around the world. Serve faithfully
- 7:56right where God has placed you, and be willing, if necessary,
- 8:00simply to become a stepping stone. You may
- 8:04never know how far your influence reaches. William Bradford
- 8:08could not possibly have imagined everything that would follow that difficult voyage
- 8:13across the Atlantic. He simply knew that God had given him truth to
- 8:17obey, a providence to trust, and a gospel worth
- 8:20advancing. More than 4 centuries later, his words still
- 8:24challenge us. May God give us that same determination
- 8:28to set our desires on the ways of God, to rest in
- 8:32his providence, to live according to his word, and to
- 8:36spend our lives advancing the gospel, Jesus Christ.
- 8:40And when our journey is finished, may those coming behind us
- 8:44find that our faithfulness helped them take another step forward.
