- 0:04Speaker 2: Listener discretion is advised.
- 0:07Speaker 3: The World's of Pigeon podcast.
- 0:13Speaker 1: This is Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota's official website for
- 0:18Speaker 1: deals by a Toyota dot Com.
- 0:22Speaker 4: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday, goo
- 0:27Speaker 4: Ahedrils Stadium. I had to think because it's we're a
- 0:31Speaker 4: little bit screwed up this week because we're thinking about London.
- 0:33Speaker 4: We're gonna be leaving on Thursday.
- 0:35Speaker 5: Time is now seeping into the day.
- 0:37Speaker 4: I did have to think we didn't have an open
- 0:39Speaker 4: because some Matt Morrell screwed it up on Matt. Rocket
- 0:45Speaker 4: Jewels is in the booth today. But yeah, the gang's
- 0:49Speaker 4: all here. It's Evan, it's Paul, it's me, it's Deuce.
- 0:51Speaker 4: We'll be here for the next two hours talking Patriots
- 0:54Speaker 4: and getting excited about the future. We're gonna break down
- 0:58Speaker 4: Drake May. Evan's here. It's the first time we've really
- 1:01Speaker 4: talked to Evan at length about Drake May. So we'll
- 1:04Speaker 4: talk about that, we'll talk about this game coming up
- 1:08Speaker 4: a little bit, but of course we'll get into that
- 1:10Speaker 4: as the week goes by, Uh, we'll get more and
- 1:13Speaker 4: more into the Jaguars and their situation. We'll touch on
- 1:16Speaker 4: DeVante Adams going to the Jets. That's breaking news this morning.
- 1:20Speaker 4: It's win or bust in the Jets, So we'll talk
- 1:24Speaker 4: about that. But let's let's start it right out. Eight
- 1:26Speaker 4: five five past five hundred is a TPX hotline podcast
- 1:30Speaker 4: at patriots dot com as the email address. What else
- 1:33Speaker 4: do I need to say before we start talking anything?
- 1:36Speaker 4: The views expressed in this show where those of us
- 1:39Speaker 4: and not the organization, and some things we might say
- 1:44Speaker 4: might offend you. So if we do, well, sorry, but
- 1:47Speaker 4: you don't.
- 1:47Speaker 6: Have to listen, I'll mostly be friend.
- 1:49Speaker 7: Yea, yeah, thank you for.
- 1:50Speaker 4: So those are all the things that happen in the
- 1:52Speaker 4: open that I have to take care.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Of, right right right? You didn't sing the song? Was
- 1:55Speaker 5: there a song? There is a song?
- 1:58Speaker 4: The World's original podcast? Yeah, there you go.
- 2:01Speaker 6: This is true right naked without it without the three
- 2:03Speaker 6: of us spent two hours already gushing over the future.
- 2:06Speaker 6: So something tell something tells me that that's going to
- 2:08Speaker 6: pale in comparison to what you were about to experience
- 2:11Speaker 6: over the next two hours. From Evan.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Listen, I think I've I've clarified my take. I think
- 2:19Speaker 4: his production was more than I expected in his first game,
- 2:23Speaker 4: and the turnovers was a little bit more than I
- 2:26Speaker 4: expected in the first game as well. Evan, the floor
- 2:29Speaker 4: is yours.
- 2:30Speaker 7: Well, yesterday was a fun day for me.
- 2:32Speaker 8: This was the most fun that I have had watching
- 2:36Speaker 8: Patriots offensive film since Max rookie year. And I don't
- 2:40Speaker 8: think that that is hyperbole at all. I would just
- 2:44Speaker 8: say said this to Deuce earlier. Tell your kids, tell
- 2:48Speaker 8: your wife, tell t Higgins. Patriot's got a quarterback. His
- 2:52Speaker 8: name's Drake may A. Guy can throw it, guy can run.
- 2:57Speaker 8: I look their mistakes on the film, all right. It's
- 3:00Speaker 8: his first career start. He had some turnovers that he
- 3:03Speaker 8: would probably like back, especially the first pick to Pop Douglas.
- 3:07Speaker 8: But I had him with twelve plus plays in this game.
- 3:11Speaker 8: It's the most I've had for Patriots quarterback since Max
- 3:13Speaker 8: rookie year. So you can take the good with the
- 3:15Speaker 8: bad for a first year guy in his first career start.
- 3:19Speaker 8: But I really was incredibly encouraged by what I saw,
- 3:25Speaker 8: and I think the main thing being that you know,
- 3:28Speaker 8: this is what we're going back to the draft. Now,
- 3:30Speaker 8: he reads the field exceptionally well for a young quarterback.
- 3:34Speaker 4: So how can you tell that.
- 3:36Speaker 8: You just can always tell that his eyes are in
- 3:38Speaker 8: the right places. He's throwing to open receivers, he's not
- 3:42Speaker 8: throwing a covered guys very often. You can tell that
- 3:45Speaker 8: he's reading through progressions and he's getting from left to right.
- 3:49Speaker 8: He goes all the way across the field to Pop
- 3:51Speaker 8: Douglas before the half, goes to his fourth R eight
- 3:54Speaker 8: on the play and makes a throw across the field
- 3:57Speaker 8: for twenty two yards. You know, those are types of
- 3:59Speaker 8: plays that are just incredibly encouraging to watch.
- 4:02Speaker 4: You know.
- 4:02Speaker 8: The things that he had issues with I thought were
- 4:05Speaker 8: mostly physical mistakes, you know, missing pros just fought out
- 4:10Speaker 8: Aaron passes, whereas the mental errors were few and far between,
- 4:16Speaker 8: which is extremely impressive given that this is his first
- 4:19Speaker 8: time out. So I just I don't know how you
- 4:22Speaker 8: watched that tape, watch that game if you watched it live,
- 4:25Speaker 8: and don't come away thinking, yeah, there's some things that
- 4:28Speaker 8: need to be developed or some things that need to
- 4:30Speaker 8: be worked on here. But if he's supported properly and
- 4:34Speaker 8: the Patriots have a guy, so.
- 4:35Speaker 4: You're saying buying a ten jersey this year might be
- 4:39Speaker 4: a better investment than it was four years ago.
- 4:41Speaker 7: I'd buy the jersey.
- 4:43Speaker 8: If I was the Patriots, I'd be advertising the crap
- 4:45Speaker 8: out of the kid. I saw it last night on
- 4:47Speaker 8: the Monday Night Football that he's already on the promo
- 4:50Speaker 8: for Sunday in London.
- 4:52Speaker 7: I mean it's all warranted.
- 4:55Speaker 8: I feel like, I mean, he did everything that you
- 4:58Speaker 8: were hoping that he was gonna do, and maybe even
- 4:59Speaker 8: a little bit more. You know, you knew the downfield
- 5:02Speaker 8: throw to Booty, the obscript play to Henry were like
- 5:04Speaker 8: the two boxes I think we all wanted to see checked.
- 5:07Speaker 8: But even some of the nuanced stuff that he was
- 5:09Speaker 8: doing was really impressive too. Beyond that, so it was
- 5:13Speaker 8: like I said, that was the most fun I've had
- 5:15Speaker 8: in years.
- 5:16Speaker 4: So you're saying that some of the inaccuracy was a
- 5:19Speaker 4: physical thing, yeah, could it also be a mental thing,
- 5:24Speaker 4: because one of the things coming out of college was
- 5:27Speaker 4: he was a little bit more inaccurate with the shorter passes. Yeah,
- 5:32Speaker 4: and this is what we saw in this game as well.
- 5:34Speaker 4: When there was something inaccurate, it was within fifteen yards,
- 5:37Speaker 4: you know, So could it be a mental thing, and
- 5:42Speaker 4: then more so, can it be corrected, whether it's physical
- 5:45Speaker 4: or mental.
- 5:46Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say that physically some of the things
- 5:51Speaker 8: that I noticed from him throwing over the middle of
- 5:53Speaker 8: the field, specifically, which is where most of the misses
- 5:55Speaker 8: for him came. He was four for nine at the
- 5:58Speaker 8: intermediate level, missed a couple throws and also put one
- 6:03Speaker 8: behind Pop Douglas that if he had led him across
- 6:06Speaker 8: the field like he did at the end of the game,
- 6:07Speaker 8: that's probably another thirty five yard touchdown to Pop Douglas.
- 6:10Speaker 8: So some of those errors that I saw were more
- 6:13Speaker 8: mechanical or physical, you know, talking about throwing the throwing
- 6:17Speaker 8: hallway where you know, where his hips and feet pointed
- 6:20Speaker 8: in the ground, so that he's leading the receiver. Instead
- 6:23Speaker 8: of throwing the ball where the receiver is, you want
- 6:26Speaker 8: to throw it in front of the guy and lead him,
- 6:28Speaker 8: you know, across the field. So he did that on
- 6:31Speaker 8: the on the last one to.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Pop right, he corrected it.
- 6:34Speaker 7: Yeah, And that was I think the most encouraging thing.
- 6:36Speaker 8: I was listening to him on EI yesterday and he
- 6:38Speaker 8: said that he liked how he bounced back from some
- 6:41Speaker 8: early adversity, and I couldn't agree more because early on
- 6:45Speaker 8: in this game it was dicey. You know, he's leaving
- 6:47Speaker 8: some clean pockets, he's missing throws. You know, it wasn't pretty.
- 6:52Speaker 8: But then he came back later in the game and
- 6:54Speaker 8: basically hit all the things that he missed early in
- 6:57Speaker 8: the game. You know, the touchdown to Booty, he threw
- 7:00Speaker 8: that exact concept. He threw that to Pop over the
- 7:03Speaker 8: middle for an interception. They come back to the almost
- 7:05Speaker 8: the exact same play and he gets to the one
- 7:08Speaker 8: on one and throws a forty yard touchdown. Later on
- 7:10Speaker 8: in the game the Crossers, he finally hits the one
- 7:12Speaker 8: in stride and gets a touchdown on that. So there
- 7:15Speaker 8: was a lot of progress even just within the game
- 7:18Speaker 8: from where he started to where he finished. That was
- 7:20Speaker 8: encouraging too. So I'm a Drake may guy. Everybody knows that,
- 7:24Speaker 8: so as long as he didn't completely trip all over himself,
- 7:27Speaker 8: I was probably gonna be positive. But I really felt
- 7:30Speaker 8: like it even exceeded my expectations.
- 7:33Speaker 4: So for those that didn't hear us on the postgame show,
- 7:35Speaker 4: do you guys want to confirm or yeah, you know.
- 7:39Speaker 5: I mean, go ahead, Mike, you I mean, I'd echo
- 7:41Speaker 5: a lot of what Evan said. I think, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 5: I think that big pass to Booty was because Evin said,
- 7:46Speaker 5: like it was kind of choppier first, right, and I
- 7:48Speaker 5: remember at one point I kind of like jokingly was
- 7:50Speaker 5: like this, Oh, this looks way better. I mean, it
- 7:52Speaker 5: didn't really look that much better, you know, early on,
- 7:54Speaker 5: but then all of a sudden he hit that pass
- 7:55Speaker 5: and it was just the jolt of energy. I mean
- 7:57Speaker 5: that you can feel it in the stadium and even
- 7:59Speaker 5: in the press, and you know, then he came out
- 8:01Speaker 5: in that second half and.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Was starting to unbuttoned.
- 8:03Speaker 5: No, I know, Fred looked at me and he gave
- 8:05Speaker 5: me kind of an err, but I didn't see the
- 8:07Speaker 5: shirt coming off, so that wasn't quite sure. Maybe maybe
- 8:09Speaker 5: if you hit another one. But but yeah, I mean
- 8:12Speaker 5: I echo everything Evan said. I think it's encouraging. I think,
- 8:15Speaker 5: you know, I just I said that. The only like
- 8:17Speaker 5: not worry I would have is like, I just you know,
- 8:19Speaker 5: this is how you think, But it's I just hope
- 8:21Speaker 5: this isn't the kind of cave where the hard stuff
- 8:23Speaker 5: is easy and the easy stuff is hard. You know
- 8:25Speaker 5: that that kind of thing was a little bit of
- 8:27Speaker 5: the vibe I god at times but the first game.
- 8:28Speaker 6: And we'll see it's a consistency, but I would absolutely
- 8:33Speaker 6: echo it. We we had two hours on the postgame
- 8:36Speaker 6: show and you're right. I mean, I'm not everybody is
- 8:38Speaker 6: the same listening, but we were all, you know, all
- 8:41Speaker 6: four of us were very encouraged by the differences in
- 8:45Speaker 6: the passing game. Like you had a semblance like it
- 8:48Speaker 6: was third and nine and you didn't say, well, they're
- 8:50Speaker 6: going to have to run a draw or you know,
- 8:52Speaker 6: just you know, throw a little short pass short of
- 8:55Speaker 6: the sticks. But because you had a quarterback that was
- 8:58Speaker 6: extending plays, he was getting out of the pocket both
- 9:02Speaker 6: as a runner and as a thrower, which I thought
- 9:04Speaker 6: was really encouraging. And it wasn't all that. It wasn't
- 9:08Speaker 6: all off script plays. The play you know, like I
- 9:11Speaker 6: knew that he could sort of buy time and maybe
- 9:14Speaker 6: flip flip one Hunter Henry for thirty yards, okay, you know,
- 9:18Speaker 6: off platform, you know, kind of broken play. That's a
- 9:22Speaker 6: that's a huge play if you have a really good offense,
- 9:24Speaker 6: those are huge plays. Josh Allen makes them all the time.
- 9:26Speaker 6: That's why the bills are so dangerous. Those are those
- 9:30Speaker 6: are huge plays. I'm not I wasn't necessarily looking for
- 9:32Speaker 6: those in his first start. But there was a play
- 9:36Speaker 6: I want to say, in the in the second quarter,
- 9:39Speaker 6: like the plays before the touchdown to Booty on the
- 9:42Speaker 6: touchdown drive that you know, impressed me far more than
- 9:45Speaker 6: the touchdown to Booty, you know. And there was like
- 9:48Speaker 6: a little like thirteen yard out to Booty. I don't know,
- 9:51Speaker 6: I'm saying Booty a lot here. I don't like that.
- 9:54Speaker 6: I forget which drive it was, but just it was
- 9:57Speaker 6: my whole like the NFL play thing, and that's to
- 10:02Speaker 6: me when I come away with most excited. That's the
- 10:04Speaker 6: stuff that all the experts told me he needed a
- 10:06Speaker 6: lot of work on.
- 10:08Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:08Speaker 6: His footwork isn't here, He's not always on time, his
- 10:11Speaker 6: progressions don't always look right, you know. You know, I
- 10:14Speaker 6: knew that there was like some accuracy issues, and we
- 10:17Speaker 6: saw some of those on Sunday. But I thought he
- 10:21Speaker 6: did a lot of things that the so called experts
- 10:24Speaker 6: told me he couldn't do, even though I saw them
- 10:26Speaker 6: when I watched high the way I'm watching highlights in
- 10:30Speaker 6: select games, so I'm not watching every play of every
- 10:33Speaker 6: game the way these guys do for a living. But
- 10:36Speaker 6: I thought there were really positive signs, and just the
- 10:39Speaker 6: routine looked routine at times, you know what I mean,
- 10:43Speaker 6: Like sometimes these guys are so athletic, they rely so
- 10:46Speaker 6: much on their skills, and you watch them play, you know,
- 10:50Speaker 6: and you're like, well, it gets bailed out just because
- 10:53Speaker 6: he's such a superior athlete. And I didn't think that
- 10:55Speaker 6: a lot of his success was just because he's a
- 10:58Speaker 6: great athlete. I thought a lot of his success was
- 11:00Speaker 6: as they drew it up.
- 11:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the piggyback on that. I just kept
- 11:03Speaker 5: coming back to margin for error. There's some margin for
- 11:06Speaker 5: error with him, you know, with his athleticism, even with
- 11:09Speaker 5: some of the footwork stuff. I mean, I don't think
- 11:10Speaker 5: that crosser to Pop was you know, ideal footwork by
- 11:13Speaker 5: any means. But he's just got an arm and he's
- 11:16Speaker 5: able to get it where it needs to be even
- 11:17Speaker 5: if his feet aren't perfectly set. I just that's something
- 11:20Speaker 5: that's been missing around here for the last couple quarterbacks.
- 11:23Speaker 5: There's no margin for error. It all had to be purpose.
- 11:25Speaker 4: Although he seems like the kind of guy when he's
- 11:27Speaker 4: on the run he's able to like keep his shoulders
- 11:30Speaker 4: square so that when he throws the ball, it doesn't tail, yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Yep, it goes where he
- 11:36Speaker 4: wants it.
- 11:37Speaker 5: I like the throw to Henry though, I mean it
- 11:38Speaker 5: was you know, it wasn't quite a no look pass,
- 11:40Speaker 5: but it was. He kind of looked him off a
- 11:41Speaker 5: little bit, you know, like it's just it was all
- 11:43Speaker 5: of a sudden he kind of came back to it.
- 11:45Speaker 5: I thought that was a great play.
- 11:46Speaker 8: I thought that throw in particular. The best part about
- 11:49Speaker 8: that was the throws he didn't make initially in the
- 11:51Speaker 8: progression because they're running.
- 11:53Speaker 7: Stick you like stick.
- 11:56Speaker 5: Brady likes to.
- 11:57Speaker 8: Yeah, So they're running stick, right, and they have like
- 11:59Speaker 8: big and little stick, and on both sides of the
- 12:02Speaker 8: field it's covered like and he doesn't throw into coverage
- 12:06Speaker 8: where auto young quarterbacks. They throw that out against that
- 12:09Speaker 8: cover two corner and it's picked off and it's a
- 12:11Speaker 8: pick six. He held the ball, recognized that they had
- 12:14Speaker 8: it covered, and then he improvised. It wasn't like he
- 12:17Speaker 8: just immediately went into improv mode. He kind of let
- 12:20Speaker 8: the progression go out, realized he had nobody open, and
- 12:23Speaker 8: then it's okay, now I go make a play. And
- 12:26Speaker 8: that's just something that this offense didn't have, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 8: in that situation, that's a throwaway, it's a sack, it's whatever.
- 12:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 12:32Speaker 8: Now they have a guy that can go out there
- 12:34Speaker 8: and create something out of nothing, and they get a
- 12:37Speaker 8: thirty yard gain on a play two weeks ago that
- 12:39Speaker 8: would have been a sack, you know, And that's that's
- 12:42Speaker 8: just such a big difference for this offense. But you
- 12:44Speaker 8: mentioned the out, you know, a little pump fake on
- 12:47Speaker 8: the flat corner, and then he throws at the Kaishan
- 12:49Speaker 8: Boodie in the cover two hole. Like those types of
- 12:52Speaker 8: things are all over his North Carolina tape, and I
- 12:55Speaker 8: just didn't understand why it was always you know, he's
- 12:58Speaker 8: got a ways to go and on the details and this,
- 13:01Speaker 8: that and the other. Like he was pumping guys, he
- 13:03Speaker 8: was moving guys with his eyes. He was doing all
- 13:06Speaker 8: these things at North Carolina that he just wasn't getting
- 13:09Speaker 8: credit for. So now you see it at the NFL level,
- 13:12Speaker 8: and I just say, it's a it's a tough it's
- 13:14Speaker 8: a tough day for the Orlowski's of the world. They
- 13:16Speaker 8: are telling us to sit him for three years, you.
- 13:18Speaker 4: Know, and he's not ruined. He didn't come out of
- 13:23Speaker 4: the game ruined.
- 13:23Speaker 6: Well, yeah, and it is, like I can understand obviously,
- 13:29Speaker 6: I'm you know, you no, no, and you know I'm
- 13:31Speaker 6: the King of Snark, you know, the Great White Snark.
- 13:33Speaker 6: But you know I'm with Evan. You guys know that
- 13:35Speaker 6: I'm more with with Evan. But it is one of
- 13:37Speaker 6: those weird things that everybody came into this from two
- 13:40Speaker 6: different camps, very distinct camps. Play may or don't break drake, right,
- 13:44Speaker 6: I mean those are those are the two camps, right.
- 13:49Speaker 6: Both of them probably came out of the game saying, see,
- 13:51Speaker 6: I told you. You know, both both sides probably feel
- 13:54Speaker 6: a lot of vindication because him because he turned the
- 13:58Speaker 6: ball over a lot, he got hit a lot, and
- 14:00Speaker 6: that's what their fear is. Whereas I am in the
- 14:03Speaker 6: other camp of yeah, he made a lot of plays
- 14:06Speaker 6: and you got more production in the passing game than
- 14:08Speaker 6: you've had all year. And the only way he's going
- 14:11Speaker 6: to eliminate the former is by continuing to play. That's
- 14:14Speaker 6: where I stand. But the I don't you know, because
- 14:21Speaker 6: those guys, right, So I like he was exactly on
- 14:25Speaker 6: my expect I mean, I know this sounds like snarky,
- 14:28Speaker 6: but that's exactly what I was expecting. I was expecting
- 14:31Speaker 6: him to make some plays that I was impressed with,
- 14:33Speaker 6: and I was expecting him to make some plays that
- 14:35Speaker 6: I was disgusted with. And I saw both. Now, some
- 14:39Speaker 6: people look at the former and they say, this is
- 14:41Speaker 6: why he has to play, this is why we've been clamoring,
- 14:44Speaker 6: you know, And then other people look at and say,
- 14:47Speaker 6: he didn't give you, like you had no chance to
- 14:49Speaker 6: win the game because of all the mistakes. I understand
- 14:52Speaker 6: the mistakes are going to come, like young quarterbacks make mistakes.
- 14:57Speaker 6: One of the mistakes that he made the no one
- 15:00Speaker 6: really talked like he kind of drifted into some of
- 15:03Speaker 6: the pressure at times too, especially early in the game.
- 15:05Speaker 6: I think he was better at that, which probably coincidentally
- 15:08Speaker 6: had something to do with the score in the second half.
- 15:10Speaker 4: The first he was kind of bouncing off guys.
- 15:12Speaker 6: Oh yeaheah, and like it. Like Mike says, like there
- 15:15Speaker 6: was times you were like, yes, it's not looking great,
- 15:18Speaker 6: and then all of a sudden, the two minute drill
- 15:20Speaker 6: at the end. It was just such a dichotomy between
- 15:22Speaker 6: the two minute drill at the end of the half
- 15:24Speaker 6: and the three of us talked about it live while
- 15:26Speaker 6: it was going on. It's like it's uncanny. It's the
- 15:28Speaker 6: same situation. They ran it for nothing. They kind of
- 15:33Speaker 6: rushed but didn't rush again. As the clock is winding down,
- 15:37Speaker 6: and then he makes that play that Evan talked about
- 15:39Speaker 6: where he's deep into his progression. He throws one all
- 15:41Speaker 6: the way across the field that Jacoby Brissett and a
- 15:44Speaker 6: lot of other NFL quarterbacks couldn't dream of making. That's
- 15:47Speaker 6: a pick with a lot of other guys. But he's
- 15:50Speaker 6: got the arm strength to get it out there. Pop
- 15:53Speaker 6: makes a great play to get twenty two yards up
- 15:55Speaker 6: the sideline for him, and all of a sudden, it's
- 15:57Speaker 6: game on here. You know, now, this is that's what
- 16:00Speaker 6: Van Pelt was trying to do the week before against
- 16:02Speaker 6: Miami or two weeks before whenever that was, you know,
- 16:06Speaker 6: against the Dolphins when they kind of botched that at
- 16:08Speaker 6: the end. When was that? What was the game? I'm
- 16:10Speaker 6: missing the game now?
- 16:11Speaker 5: Is Miami?
- 16:11Speaker 6: Okay?
- 16:12Speaker 7: And then Seattle they did the same thing.
- 16:13Speaker 6: Yeah, the Miami game that the week before when he
- 16:16Speaker 6: takes a shot down the sideline to Polk and you know,
- 16:19Speaker 6: as Van Pelt says, you know, it was not a
- 16:22Speaker 6: good throw, not a good route didn't get open, and
- 16:25Speaker 6: you know, all of a sudden it fails. They're looking
- 16:27Speaker 6: to jump start a drive and Drake may jump started
- 16:30Speaker 6: the drive for them.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:31Speaker 6: Yeah, So like those are all the things that he
- 16:34Speaker 6: did that we're talking about. I think those are Like
- 16:38Speaker 6: you had him for twelve plus plays just out of curiosity.
- 16:40Speaker 6: How many minus places yet?
- 16:41Speaker 4: Nine?
- 16:42Speaker 6: Okay, So now I'll give you an example of like
- 16:44Speaker 6: how you can come after this from different ways. I
- 16:47Speaker 6: had a feeling that your number was going to below Greg.
- 16:50Speaker 6: You know Greg Bdard, who we mentioned all the time
- 16:52Speaker 6: because he does it a lot like Evan. They watched
- 16:54Speaker 6: the game and they graded thing he had him for
- 16:57Speaker 6: eleven plus plays to your twelve on the same seventeen
- 17:01Speaker 6: minus place.
- 17:02Speaker 7: I saw that.
- 17:02Speaker 8: I the seventeen minus plays. I haven't read what Greg
- 17:06Speaker 8: road or heard what he said said.
- 17:07Speaker 6: I can't, and I apologize. I would tell you what
- 17:10Speaker 6: he wrote. I can't read it.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I can't.
- 17:11Speaker 8: Yeah, Like there are times, you know, there was a
- 17:14Speaker 8: if you paid you could there was a scramble early
- 17:18Speaker 8: There's a scramble early on in the game where there
- 17:21Speaker 8: was a play action drop back and he didn't even
- 17:24Speaker 8: give the play a chance to develop. He hit the
- 17:26Speaker 8: top of his drop and he took off, And if
- 17:29Speaker 8: you want the guy to sit in the pocket and
- 17:31Speaker 8: play quarterback, then you're probably gonna grade that as a
- 17:33Speaker 8: negative play, even though the rush gained eleven yards, because
- 17:37Speaker 8: it was kind of that bumper cars that we were
- 17:39Speaker 8: talking about just a second ago. He like bounces yeah, yeah,
- 17:42Speaker 8: he bounces off like two guys and then all of
- 17:45Speaker 8: a sudden gets out and goes for eleven yards. Hunter
- 17:48Speaker 8: Henry is like open over the middle on an incut
- 17:50Speaker 8: if you had just stayed in the pocket and made
- 17:52Speaker 8: the play. So I could see that being a quote
- 17:55Speaker 8: unquote minus. I don't count that as a minus because
- 17:58Speaker 8: he gained eleven yards.
- 18:00Speaker 4: But if you go back in the film room, you're
- 18:02Speaker 4: telling him, don't do that, do this.
- 18:05Speaker 8: But I don't know if I am like, because that's
- 18:08Speaker 8: not who he is. So like, if you're gonna take
- 18:11Speaker 8: the gunslinger out of him, and you're gonna take the
- 18:13Speaker 8: playmaker out of him, and you're gonna want him to
- 18:15Speaker 8: sit there and be brady and just like pick apart
- 18:18Speaker 8: defenses from the pocket and all that kind of stuff,
- 18:20Speaker 8: then I don't think you're allowing him to play to
- 18:22Speaker 8: his strengths.
- 18:23Speaker 4: You also don't want him to vacate if he doesn't
- 18:25Speaker 4: have to.
- 18:26Speaker 7: Yeah, I hear that.
- 18:27Speaker 8: I just I look at it a little bit differently
- 18:30Speaker 8: because that, to me, that play got him into the game,
- 18:34Speaker 8: Like he made that that run happen, and he kind of.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Settled down a little bit after that. Yeah, And I
- 18:41Speaker 7: I just a I.
- 18:43Speaker 8: Don't think so, but I might have my sequence wrong there.
- 18:46Speaker 8: I just I think the biggest thing that you see
- 18:49Speaker 8: with him is that he's gonna have some plays and
- 18:53Speaker 8: you watch it every single Sunday on with Josh Allen
- 18:56Speaker 8: or Jordan Love or any of these other quarterbacks where
- 18:59Speaker 8: it breaks every rule that a quarterback coach or whatever
- 19:02Speaker 8: would tell you, but it just works because they're just
- 19:06Speaker 8: that physically talented.
- 19:08Speaker 6: And that's what you have to hope for, is that
- 19:10Speaker 6: he's one of those guys that it's not always going
- 19:12Speaker 6: to be by the book, it's not always going to
- 19:14Speaker 6: be conventional, but he's gifted enough that more often than not,
- 19:18Speaker 6: like Josh, how many times do you see Josh Allen
- 19:20Speaker 6: turn the ball over and you watch the highlight and
- 19:22Speaker 6: you're like, what was he thinking on that play? Like
- 19:26Speaker 6: a lot during the course of a season. When you
- 19:28Speaker 6: if you watch the Bills, that happens a lot, and
- 19:30Speaker 6: it happens a lot with Jordan Love too, as as
- 19:32Speaker 6: Evan said, totally. But you gotta like, you got to
- 19:35Speaker 6: take some of those bad because there's gonna be so
- 19:37Speaker 6: much more good, I mean, And that's what you have
- 19:39Speaker 6: to hope. I'm not I'm not putting Drake may in
- 19:41Speaker 6: that category.
- 19:41Speaker 4: And that's the bigger point for the rest of the season.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Assuming Drake starts every one of these games, which we
- 19:47Speaker 4: all hope for, is that it's not going to be
- 19:50Speaker 4: about winning or losing because he's going to make mistakes.
- 19:53Speaker 4: And you ask me this question on the postgame show.
- 19:56Speaker 4: If he played that way every game, every games you
- 20:00Speaker 4: know from you know, from week one, what would their
- 20:03Speaker 4: record be? It'd probably be one and five, if not
- 20:05Speaker 4: zero and six. Because the Patriots can't win when you turn.
- 20:09Speaker 4: They're not that good all around.
- 20:10Speaker 6: The kid, they can't be. You can't worry about.
- 20:12Speaker 4: That right now. You've got to play this kid. You
- 20:15Speaker 4: got to let him throw it. You gotta let him
- 20:17Speaker 4: make mistakes. Do not coddle him the way they coddle
- 20:21Speaker 4: Mac Jones. At least the first half of the his
- 20:24Speaker 4: first his rookie season. Do not coddle him that way.
- 20:27Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean that's my point with the scrambles and
- 20:29Speaker 8: the and the offscript stuff is if you tell him
- 20:33Speaker 8: we want you to sit in the pocket and we
- 20:34Speaker 8: want you to read this out and we want he's
- 20:36Speaker 8: gonna become robotic and it's not gonna be his natural
- 20:40Speaker 8: playing style. He's not, like I said earlier, He's not Brady.
- 20:44Speaker 8: He's Josh Allen, right, Like, get used to watching that
- 20:48Speaker 8: kind of quarterback. Don't expect him to be manning Brady
- 20:51Speaker 8: Breeze and just like sit in the pocket and read
- 20:54Speaker 8: out defenses all the time and pick people apart. I
- 20:57Speaker 8: just if there's one thing that concerned me a little
- 20:59Speaker 8: bit was the accuracy, Like that is he gonna be
- 21:03Speaker 8: more consistent with his downfield accuracy because it wasn't just the.
- 21:07Speaker 7: Air Milt pick. I mean, he he missed.
- 21:10Speaker 8: I had him with six Arran throws in the game,
- 21:12Speaker 8: and a lot of those two were like completions where
- 21:16Speaker 8: the ball placement just wasn't completed absolutely, And so that
- 21:21Speaker 8: that's gonna is that is it mechanics? Is it lower body?
- 21:25Speaker 8: You know, the longer wind up back and sometimes it's yeah,
- 21:29Speaker 8: like what what's causing him to because he had all
- 21:32Speaker 8: these Erran throws in North Carolina?
- 21:33Speaker 5: Take that. That's the thing to watch for me, is
- 21:35Speaker 5: that can that? Like can he doesn't need to be Brady?
- 21:37Speaker 5: But can he develop that part of Brady in his
- 21:39Speaker 5: game of And a lot of it's mental, right, I mean,
- 21:41Speaker 5: that's just experience, understanding, getting comfortable, especially trusting your offensive lineman,
- 21:46Speaker 5: Like that's that's another part of this whole thing where
- 21:48Speaker 5: he's getting snaps from under a butt that he's never
- 21:51Speaker 5: been under before, Paul, you know, it's not like ever
- 21:53Speaker 5: where through So I I I agree with with everything
- 21:59Speaker 5: Evan said. I just I mean this, I think each
- 22:01Speaker 5: quarterback is so interesting. Like we've watched a couple of
- 22:03Speaker 5: rookie quarterbacks now and you kind of see what they're
- 22:05Speaker 5: good at and what their holes are, and you say,
- 22:07Speaker 5: this is what they have to develop in their game.
- 22:09Speaker 5: And that's what I'm so interested to watch going forward
- 22:12Speaker 5: for these last what is it eleven games, Like, you know, really,
- 22:14Speaker 5: can we see the development of him just getting a
- 22:16Speaker 5: little more comfortable in the pocket taking? So, I mean
- 22:18Speaker 5: that's what you're talking about though, take the layups, like,
- 22:20Speaker 5: you know, take the easy stuff. But that's that's what
- 22:23Speaker 5: he has to figure out.
- 22:24Speaker 4: I think you mentioned pocket. You don't want us sitting
- 22:27Speaker 4: in the pocket. It would be nice, though, if he
- 22:29Speaker 4: had a pocket to sit in. And you know, we
- 22:31Speaker 4: do have to address this offensive line situation because it's
- 22:35Speaker 4: going to affect his development. It's going to affect how
- 22:38Speaker 4: he plays the rest of these eleven games, assuming it
- 22:41Speaker 4: doesn't get right.
- 22:42Speaker 6: You know more, we're watching all of that stuff too
- 22:45Speaker 6: with May and seeing how he, you know, progresses, and
- 22:48Speaker 6: you're also going to have to watch to see how
- 22:51Speaker 6: the other teams progress against him because like, as an example,
- 22:57Speaker 6: I don't know how you guys felt, but the last
- 23:00Speaker 6: in the world I was expecting on the forty yard
- 23:02Speaker 6: touchdown was a go round.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Yeah Houston too.
- 23:04Speaker 6: I thought they were gonna throw something short over the
- 23:06Speaker 6: middle play for a field goal and say, hey, that's
- 23:09Speaker 6: a nice scoring drive we put together at the end
- 23:11Speaker 6: of the half there, And all of a sudden, they
- 23:14Speaker 6: get a one on one on the outside and Stingley's
- 23:17Speaker 6: caught completely. And he's a good player, Booty beat a
- 23:20Speaker 6: really good corner on that play. He just caught him
- 23:22Speaker 6: completely flat footed. They were even about the ten yard line.
- 23:26Speaker 6: He ran right by him. Like so, now to your point, Fred,
- 23:30Speaker 6: does that make you less easy to guard? But now
- 23:34Speaker 6: you you got them in a different way, you defend
- 23:36Speaker 6: them in a different way, I hope, so all those
- 23:38Speaker 6: things get I think that's just like they're allowing to
- 23:41Speaker 6: Mario Douglas to run unencumbered across the field how many times?
- 23:45Speaker 6: Four more? Four times? Tis more like they're going to
- 23:48Speaker 6: cover him now, Like do you have to? Because now
- 23:50Speaker 6: you have a quarterback. You can get that all the.
- 23:51Speaker 4: Way, you know, like people say, oh, you know, if
- 23:54Speaker 4: he had hit that first one, he would have had
- 23:55Speaker 4: two touchdowns. If he had hit that first one to Douglas,
- 23:58Speaker 4: they probably would have guarded him differently second time.
- 24:00Speaker 5: And this to me is the whole key though. And
- 24:02Speaker 5: we've spent the last three years talking about they're easy
- 24:05Speaker 5: to defend. Get up on the line of scrip.
- 24:07Speaker 4: Okay, so now we're pushing them back the more we
- 24:09Speaker 4: can run.
- 24:10Speaker 6: We've got pushing them back, just defending him differently, like
- 24:13Speaker 6: you like tomorrow, Douglas didn't go down the field. He
- 24:16Speaker 6: ran across the field with nobody on It's like five
- 24:19Speaker 6: times right.
- 24:21Speaker 4: The reason why the.
- 24:23Speaker 6: Touchdown things. It's unbelievable how fast he beat the guy
- 24:26Speaker 6: off the line on the touchdown. But now you say, like, okay,
- 24:30Speaker 6: he has that and this guy is going to get
- 24:32Speaker 6: it to him. So I got to maybe play his
- 24:34Speaker 6: own or I got to maybe you want to do
- 24:37Speaker 6: some different things.
- 24:39Speaker 5: Has to think about something.
- 24:41Speaker 6: I'm not necessarily talking about back and I'm talking about
- 24:45Speaker 6: I don't know for the first time really since Brady left.
- 24:49Speaker 6: There might be an adjustment to the way the secondary
- 24:51Speaker 6: has to play.
- 24:53Speaker 5: But that's fine.
- 24:54Speaker 4: The more the more things you show that you can do,
- 24:56Speaker 4: the more they have to worry about. And then it's
- 24:59Speaker 4: up to the quarter to find out, Okay, where do
- 25:01Speaker 4: I go? Because he's got more you know, now he
- 25:04Speaker 4: has more things to think about because the defense is
- 25:08Speaker 4: you know, has him on tape. But it's all good,
- 25:11Speaker 4: it's all good.
- 25:12Speaker 5: It's good.
- 25:13Speaker 8: But I think, my my my fear is this is
- 25:16Speaker 8: where the sprays come into play because if he's gonna
- 25:20Speaker 8: start to see a lot of zone coverage, which is
- 25:22Speaker 8: I think, what's gonna You cannot play man to man
- 25:24Speaker 8: against this guy like he you just can't. You know,
- 25:26Speaker 8: he's gonna tear you apart if you sit in man.
- 25:29Speaker 4: Because rush him in two sets.
- 25:31Speaker 8: But but his his downfield throws are too good and
- 25:35Speaker 8: he's too mobile, so you're gonna you're gonna put yourself
- 25:37Speaker 8: into a blender trying to play man to man against him.
- 25:41Speaker 8: So they're gonna start to play a lot more soft
- 25:43Speaker 8: zone against the Patriots. And the question is is he
- 25:46Speaker 8: going to be able to take the underneath stuff consistently
- 25:49Speaker 8: and not have the sprays on the short and intermediate
- 25:52Speaker 8: throws that he had in this game, Because if he
- 25:54Speaker 8: starts spraying the ball all over the place, then they're
- 25:56Speaker 8: just gonna sit back and zone and make him pick
- 25:58Speaker 8: him apart from the pocket. You know that that's where
- 26:01Speaker 8: he's gonna have to adjust, because we'll see it this
- 26:04Speaker 8: week with Jacksonville, Like they play more Cover two than
- 26:06Speaker 8: any team in the league. So they're gonna sit with
- 26:08Speaker 8: those two high safeties and they're gonna say, if you're
- 26:11Speaker 8: gonna beat us, it's gonna be at the short and
- 26:13Speaker 8: intermediate level.
- 26:14Speaker 4: You mean, teams are gonna have to treat the Patriots
- 26:16Speaker 4: offense like a real NFL offense eventually a little bit.
- 26:19Speaker 8: Okay, all right, Yeah, I think The one thing to
- 26:21Speaker 8: douce his point is does that open up the running game,
- 26:24Speaker 8: because now you'll have two guys you know deep, you'll
- 26:27Speaker 8: have those lighter boxes, Like maybe now you can sequence
- 26:30Speaker 8: the run game off of it, and that would help
- 26:32Speaker 8: you alleviate some of the stress. But I'm just thinking
- 26:34Speaker 8: about he has Jamichael Hasty on a hitch route and
- 26:38Speaker 8: he throws it just nowhere near him, like in the
- 26:41Speaker 8: third row, and it's like, if those are the types
- 26:43Speaker 8: of throws that everybody's gonna force him to now make,
- 26:46Speaker 8: is he gonna be able to make those consists?
- 26:48Speaker 4: I do want to temper. I think we're a little
- 26:50Speaker 4: bit We're not there yet where other teams have to
- 26:53Speaker 4: fear Drake May Yet if I'm an opposing defense, I'm
- 26:56Speaker 4: still treating him like a rookie quarterback and I'm daring
- 27:00Speaker 4: him and I'm gonna, you know, confuse him.
- 27:02Speaker 5: But it's a little something to think about.
- 27:04Speaker 4: Oh it eventually.
- 27:06Speaker 6: Myself about both both camps are like claiming victor. You know,
- 27:10Speaker 6: they scored twenty one points. It just looks so much
- 27:13Speaker 6: better because, Yeah, as I've used this line a few times, Leef,
- 27:17Speaker 6: I'd rather lose forty one twenty one than twenty four
- 27:19Speaker 6: to three. Right, that's just a me thing. Yeah, I understand,
- 27:22Speaker 6: it's the same. You didn't have a chance to win
- 27:24Speaker 6: either game. I get it. If you had, I'd rather lose, well,
- 27:26Speaker 6: scoring at least some points.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Right, if you had, you know, same picks and same
- 27:31Speaker 4: inaccuracy and they only scored three points, then that camp
- 27:35Speaker 4: would really be all over it. But he had production.
- 27:39Speaker 4: He had three touchdown passes. When's the last time a
- 27:41Speaker 4: Patriots quarterback got three touchdown passes? Billy Zappy Bailey Zappy.
- 27:45Speaker 6: I was going to say, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh's question.
- 27:48Speaker 5: I mean, do you guys put anything on it that
- 27:50Speaker 5: there wasn't I mean, and maybe this was situational, but
- 27:52Speaker 5: that he didn't really have a run game either in
- 27:54Speaker 5: this in this game at all, Like there wasn't really
- 27:55Speaker 5: anything doing on the ground for them.
- 27:58Speaker 6: The first time he touched the ball, they're down set nothing.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Second time he touches it down fourteen nothing. That's not
- 28:03Speaker 6: on Drake May and the offense, right, Like, give him
- 28:07Speaker 6: some help. You know, you're playing against a good team
- 28:10Speaker 6: in a good defense and you can't run the ball.
- 28:12Speaker 6: You got no Remondre Stephenson, and it took him a
- 28:15Speaker 6: whole half really to sort of get his footing.
- 28:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think that's what's frustrated drowd Mayo after
- 28:21Speaker 4: the game, and you could he was kind of, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 4: real visibly upset with his defense because, man, if we
- 28:28Speaker 4: could just play the kind of defense I think we can.
- 28:31Speaker 7: To your defense, are we going to do this right now?
- 28:34Speaker 5: Because I was enjoying that.
- 28:36Speaker 8: No, I just I will get to your defense, don't worry.
- 28:41Speaker 8: But the one thing that I would just not the
- 28:43Speaker 8: run game necessarily. But Houston played pretty straight up in
- 28:47Speaker 8: this game. They actually didn't do much exotic defense at all.
- 28:51Speaker 8: Like it wasn't a lot of like post snap spins
- 28:54Speaker 8: or anything like that. They played man to man across
- 28:57Speaker 8: the board, and they said, our guys are better than
- 28:59Speaker 8: your guys, and we're just going to beat you.
- 29:01Speaker 6: And they also had a huge lead for the vast
- 29:03Speaker 6: majority of the game.
- 29:04Speaker 8: Right and they they had the lead, and I guess
- 29:08Speaker 8: you could say early on in the game it worked
- 29:10Speaker 8: for them because he throws the pick, the Douglas and
- 29:12Speaker 8: all that kind of stuff. But then as he settled
- 29:14Speaker 8: into the game, you know, him and Popp were torching
- 29:16Speaker 8: them on those crossing grounds.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Pop was beating that he was twenty three, I think.
- 29:20Speaker 7: Yeah, so he was.
- 29:22Speaker 5: Talking about the sideline, the iselin.
- 29:26Speaker 6: To the touchdown. He beat him so quickly that it
- 29:29Speaker 6: didn't matter about pass protection, None of it mattered. He
- 29:33Speaker 6: was coming across the field with nobody within five yards
- 29:36Speaker 6: of him.
- 29:37Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 8: So when you look at him and statistically, Douglas is
- 29:41Speaker 8: turning into one of the best man coverage route runners
- 29:44Speaker 8: in the league. I mean, he's been really, really good
- 29:47Speaker 8: in terms of beating man coverage. Now he's got a
- 29:49Speaker 8: quarterback that can get him the ball in those situations.
- 29:52Speaker 8: Like if I'm defenses, you have to change, Like you
- 29:55Speaker 8: can't just come in here and play them straight up
- 29:57Speaker 8: like the Texans did. They thought they were going to
- 29:59Speaker 8: rush five guys that they were going to play man
- 30:01Speaker 8: to man across the board and the Patriots weren't going
- 30:04Speaker 8: to be able to move the ball on them, and
- 30:06Speaker 8: they were able to move the ball a little bit.
- 30:07Speaker 8: So I would be worried about doing that moving forward.
- 30:10Speaker 4: All right. Eight five five Pats five hundred is the
- 30:13Speaker 4: TPX Hotline podcast at Patriots dot Com. Is the email address.
- 30:17Speaker 4: So we've just touched on, you know, some of the Patriots, Drake.
- 30:21Speaker 4: There's a lot more to you know, delve into the
- 30:24Speaker 4: defense is an issue, the offensive line, you know, who
- 30:27Speaker 4: are the receivers that might emerge this season. I was
- 30:31Speaker 4: surprised Kendrick Bourne was a little quieter than I thought
- 30:34Speaker 4: he might be in this little bit second game.
- 30:36Speaker 6: I think he's still he says he's still working.
- 30:38Speaker 5: Said it would take him a little bit. But I
- 30:40Speaker 5: thought the surprise was that Booty played the most snaps
- 30:43Speaker 5: of anybody. I mean, he's kind of emerged. He's I
- 30:45Speaker 5: didn't think he dressed the first two Some.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Of us thought he was pretty good.
- 30:48Speaker 5: You know, I thought he was okay. I mean I
- 30:50Speaker 5: always thought like I thought it was kind of him
- 30:51Speaker 5: and Rager were kind of the bubble guys, and I
- 30:53Speaker 5: thought Rager was better.
- 30:54Speaker 6: I think that illustrates the problems you have offensively. What
- 30:57Speaker 6: that he's that he the most snaps.
- 31:00Speaker 4: I don't care as long as he's producing.
- 31:02Speaker 6: Yeah, I'll let you know when he does.
- 31:04Speaker 8: I don't know snap snaps to me, I thought you
- 31:07Speaker 8: were talking about pop like pop is there a number Booty?
- 31:09Speaker 6: You said, Oh, we were talking about Booty.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I said, Mike you, oh, I was talking about some
- 31:15Speaker 4: of us thought Booty was good.
- 31:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean that's what you said.
- 31:19Speaker 4: Some of us thought that.
- 31:21Speaker 6: We all thought Douglas was good. Some some think that
- 31:25Speaker 6: he is a pro bowler who was going to catch
- 31:26Speaker 6: one hundred and twenty passes. I'm sorry I clapped back
- 31:29Speaker 6: at that. I thought that was insane who said that
- 31:31Speaker 6: Tom Curran predicted he was going to catch one hundred
- 31:34Speaker 6: and twenty balls. If he catches one hundred and twenty balls,
- 31:36Speaker 6: he will not be in one.
- 31:38Speaker 5: Piece this show.
- 31:40Speaker 6: But that's what that's the way he's talked about, all right.
- 31:44Speaker 6: Another writer, Chris Price called him a poor man's Tyreek Hill,
- 31:47Speaker 6: who also said he has he's a threat to score
- 31:50Speaker 6: every time he gets the ball, despite the fact that
- 31:52Speaker 6: he recorded his first career touchdown on Sunday.
- 31:54Speaker 4: I don't know if that's that inaccurated poor man's.
- 31:57Speaker 6: This is where we this is what we did. But
- 31:59Speaker 6: I can think he's a good player without you mocking me.
- 32:02Speaker 4: But what do you think that means? A poor man's
- 32:04Speaker 4: Tyreek Hill.
- 32:04Speaker 6: I don't think he has anything in common with Tyreek Hill.
- 32:07Speaker 6: What He's not anywhere near as thick as Tyreek Hill
- 32:10Speaker 6: explosive as Tyreek Hill the strong hands to go up
- 32:13Speaker 6: and win contested catches like.
- 32:14Speaker 4: Tyreek I think he's quick and small.
- 32:16Speaker 6: Not even to mention the flate, the flat out straight
- 32:18Speaker 6: line speed that Tyreek Hill has. It's he's shifted. I
- 32:21Speaker 6: like Pop Douglas is a good shifty slot receiver.
- 32:26Speaker 4: Poor man's Tyreek Kill.
- 32:27Speaker 5: What does you think? What's going on with him?
- 32:30Speaker 2: Wow?
- 32:30Speaker 6: This guy, this guy we're talking about. We're talking about
- 32:35Speaker 6: Douglas stuff, winning routes within a millise mister touchdown, thirty
- 32:40Speaker 6: five yard crossing routs want to talk about maybe.
- 32:46Speaker 5: No, but I I look, I was, I was disappointed.
- 32:48Speaker 5: I've been a fan of his. I think he's a
- 32:49Speaker 5: good player. I think he's got a lot of potential.
- 32:51Speaker 4: I want to ask about this though. Okay, so he
- 32:53Speaker 4: did not have a good game, poke.
- 32:56Speaker 6: But up to this point, like that's three in a
- 32:58Speaker 6: row he's been okay's games like that in a row.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Because he couldn't get his feet in the week.
- 33:03Speaker 6: Because he hasn't caught passes when he's been throwing.
- 33:05Speaker 5: The ball to him, get throw the ball.
- 33:07Speaker 6: Yeah, I gave you the numbers. The last game he's
- 33:10Speaker 6: got ten catchers on twenty three targets on the season.
- 33:13Speaker 5: It was just what was it like, two three drops?
- 33:15Speaker 5: I mean it was, you know, I don't know if
- 33:16Speaker 5: they all qualified as but I thought there was. He's
- 33:18Speaker 5: targeted four times that I think he should have.
- 33:21Speaker 6: I'm not worried about the drops because the drops, I've
- 33:24Speaker 6: watched them all summer. I think he has good hands.
- 33:26Speaker 6: I don't know what happened. I don't know what happened
- 33:28Speaker 6: on Sunday. That's what I worry about. The other balls
- 33:32Speaker 6: that are intended for him, that that are not connecting,
- 33:34Speaker 6: which seems to happen more often than not. Dropping the
- 33:37Speaker 6: ball is not necessarily something. I'm worried. And we'll see.
- 33:40Speaker 6: You could maybe maybe it's mental now when he's got
- 33:42Speaker 6: the yips.
- 33:43Speaker 4: So I have to go back. But I can't remember,
- 33:46Speaker 4: like up until this week me saying, boy, that's a ball.
- 33:50Speaker 4: He should have really had yea poke.
- 33:53Speaker 6: But I'm just telling you when the ball was thrown
- 33:54Speaker 6: to him, it's not completed, but it was.
- 33:57Speaker 4: I know that he's not open, but that doesn't mean
- 33:59Speaker 4: that every time him that that it's the receiver's fall.
- 34:02Speaker 4: Like some of the.
- 34:03Speaker 6: Partly it is because he's not getting open enough that
- 34:06Speaker 6: the pass can be completed.
- 34:08Speaker 7: I mean he runs a corner on third down.
- 34:10Speaker 8: I guess that was one that he was You know,
- 34:16Speaker 8: he runs that route down the sideline on second and
- 34:18Speaker 8: two when he's covered like a blanket and has to
- 34:20Speaker 8: turn into a defensive back.
- 34:22Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, is that his fault.
- 34:24Speaker 6: Yes, you're supposed to get open. That's what the offensive
- 34:27Speaker 6: coordinator said. We didn't win on the route. No, that's
- 34:29Speaker 6: part of it. When you get targeted seven times and
- 34:32Speaker 6: catch three balls one week and then six times and
- 34:35Speaker 6: catch one the next week. Yes, that's that's partly on
- 34:37Speaker 6: the receiver. It's not just wide open bad throws.
- 34:42Speaker 8: No, he has not been very good, and I would
- 34:45Speaker 8: say for a couple of weeks now. But I look
- 34:48Speaker 8: at it as mental, like I I really.
- 34:50Speaker 7: Feel like he's worried about that. He's got kind of
- 34:52Speaker 7: the yips with it.
- 34:54Speaker 5: MAO said, he's got to get over the hunk.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 34:55Speaker 8: I wonder, especially coming off of what he thought was
- 34:59Speaker 8: a game and winning touchdown against Miami that doesn't go
- 35:02Speaker 8: his way on the call. You know, then he comes
- 35:04Speaker 8: back this week and.
- 35:05Speaker 6: Part of it too, like the map to handle that,
- 35:08Speaker 6: like he carried on and on and on. I like
- 35:10Speaker 6: the way he wouldn't get back in the huddle. He
- 35:12Speaker 6: kept watching the video. He's you know, he's gesturing to
- 35:15Speaker 6: the crowd. Two more plays here, like that was second
- 35:18Speaker 6: down next, you know, like if that happened to Tom,
- 35:21Speaker 6: I mean, I know it's unfair, but if that happened
- 35:23Speaker 6: to Tom Brady, you know what would have happened on
- 35:24Speaker 6: one of the next two plays.
- 35:25Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, he would. But that's fair enough, you know.
- 35:28Speaker 6: And again, I'm not worried as much about the fact
- 35:31Speaker 6: that he dropped too easy passes. Everybody's going to focus
- 35:34Speaker 6: on that. I mean, obviously, sorry. One of them was
- 35:36Speaker 6: like a power dribble. Yeah, like he had a chance
- 35:39Speaker 6: that came in and just like knocked it down. It
- 35:41Speaker 6: looks like, do remember when Brandon Marshall wanted out of Denver?
- 35:44Speaker 6: When Josh got there and he yeah, do you remember
- 35:47Speaker 6: Brandon Marshall.
- 35:49Speaker 5: Baby were alive?
- 35:53Speaker 6: Then he literally was throwing passes to the ground. He
- 35:57Speaker 6: would catch passes that trade camp and and throw him
- 35:59Speaker 6: to the because he wanted out. That's what it was like.
- 36:02Speaker 6: But I watched him all summer. He didn't drop and
- 36:04Speaker 6: no training camp I think that's just why I'm a
- 36:08Speaker 6: little bit so I'm not as worried about dropping a
- 36:10Speaker 6: couple of passes, unless, like Evan said, like maybe it's
- 36:13Speaker 6: a mental thing that's now in his head that that
- 36:16Speaker 6: would be something to be concerned about moving forward. I'm
- 36:20Speaker 6: more sort of worried about him off the field, Like
- 36:24Speaker 6: I don't know what you're gonna I know you guys
- 36:26Speaker 6: are gonna jump on this and say Paul's being negative again,
- 36:29Speaker 6: and I don't mean it, but like in training camp
- 36:31Speaker 6: when he kind of yelled at us like for not
- 36:33Speaker 6: being on board, like if you don't believe in us, now,
- 36:35Speaker 6: we don't want you. Like this is a kid who
- 36:37Speaker 6: hadn't even played a game yet, and he's already chastising
- 36:40Speaker 6: the fans for not being on board with the wide
- 36:42Speaker 6: receiver room, and back to back weeks he's posting videos
- 36:46Speaker 6: on the Monday after an incomplete pass, trying to tell
- 36:49Speaker 6: you why it's a complete pass when both of them
- 36:51Speaker 6: were incomplete, and I just wonder.
- 36:55Speaker 4: Yeah, like I.
- 36:58Speaker 5: Thought I would. And I really like the kid a lot.
- 37:00Speaker 6: I mean, calling him a football player, I like a
- 37:05Speaker 6: lot of them. I don't like him as much as
- 37:06Speaker 6: you might element, but I like a lot of what
- 37:09Speaker 6: he brings physically to a football team. I think he's
- 37:12Speaker 6: a football player.
- 37:13Speaker 5: I think the bigger issue is and it goes back
- 37:15Speaker 5: to kind of the booty of it all was, you know,
- 37:17Speaker 5: and Evan you said paying a lot of snaps doesn't
- 37:18Speaker 5: necessarily mean much. And I do think it's a reflection
- 37:21Speaker 5: kind of the Paul's point of that they're not really
- 37:23Speaker 5: getting production from the other guys. And Douglas you like,
- 37:25Speaker 5: and Bourne's coming back, and I agree with Fred's point
- 37:28Speaker 5: earlier saying will get a little bit more. He'll get there,
- 37:31Speaker 5: I hope. But I think I'm just looking at Polk
- 37:33Speaker 5: saying you're the guy, You're the second round pick, You're
- 37:36Speaker 5: the one who needs to.
- 37:37Speaker 6: Those you want him to be the third and right now.
- 37:40Speaker 5: Is compliment Douglas, and you know and and and you
- 37:42Speaker 5: want him to do it for May because you think
- 37:44Speaker 5: this is a guy who's got some size and and
- 37:46Speaker 5: and and is able to bring a different element to
- 37:48Speaker 5: Douglas and to develop a chemistry.
- 37:50Speaker 6: So with Holk, I just want it like again. And
- 37:52Speaker 6: I know how sometimes I get perceived, and I I
- 37:56Speaker 6: am not given up on jail and Polk. I've heard
- 37:58Speaker 6: a little of that this week on on my shows,
- 38:01Speaker 6: not necessarily my show Mike and Tony, because I haven't
- 38:04Speaker 6: really heard them because they had a Bruins game yesterday.
- 38:07Speaker 6: But some of the other guys are like, oh, this
- 38:09Speaker 6: is another second round bus And I'm like, the guy's
- 38:11Speaker 6: played like they've played six games. Like can we give
- 38:14Speaker 6: him like a chance to sort of have some success,
- 38:18Speaker 6: have some failure. See how he reacts, you know, see
- 38:21Speaker 6: how he fights through it, like Taekwon Thornton made some
- 38:24Speaker 6: plays early on as a rookie. Remember the game in
- 38:26Speaker 6: Cleveland with Zappi where all of a sudden it looked like, Hey,
- 38:29Speaker 6: this guy might have something, and then he never built
- 38:31Speaker 6: on that, you know, and then it's sort of steadily declined.
- 38:34Speaker 6: Let's see if Polk is different. Maybe he's having a
- 38:37Speaker 6: little bit of a rough patch here. Maybe he responds
- 38:39Speaker 6: and catches five balls next week and we're all having
- 38:42Speaker 6: a whole different conversation. I'm not giving up on Polk.
- 38:44Speaker 8: It's very weird to me because his film is the
- 38:48Speaker 8: absolute opposite of what I expected it to be. I
- 38:51Speaker 8: expected him to make those catches but not get open.
- 38:54Speaker 8: But he's getting open, he's not making the catches. It's
- 38:57Speaker 8: like really bizarre watching him at Washington. I just expected
- 39:02Speaker 8: him to be like this contested catch, you know, over
- 39:04Speaker 8: the middle type of receiver and be able to win
- 39:07Speaker 8: in traffic and you know, make those difficult catches. But
- 39:10Speaker 8: that's hasn't been the case. What the problem is, He's
- 39:14Speaker 8: getting open, like he gets open on the game winning touchdown,
- 39:17Speaker 8: Like he's open, he just doesn't make the catch. You know,
- 39:20Speaker 8: he got open early on in this game on a
- 39:22Speaker 8: go route on the throw to Douglas the first interception.
- 39:25Speaker 8: He's he's got a step on the corner on the
- 39:27Speaker 8: outside on the go route and Drake just didn't get
- 39:30Speaker 8: to him and threw it over the middle, like he
- 39:32Speaker 8: gets open on film, and now he's not catching the ball.
- 39:35Speaker 8: And it's just like that was the exact opposite of
- 39:38Speaker 8: what I thought.
- 39:38Speaker 6: Maybe that switches next week, Maybe maybe he makes a
- 39:41Speaker 6: couple of those catches early on, and it's a whole difference.
- 39:43Speaker 5: A really good conversation. That's why I kind of threw
- 39:45Speaker 5: the hammer down just to talk, because I was curious
- 39:47Speaker 5: what you guys thought about it. All the really interesting
- 39:49Speaker 5: points everybody made about It's just there's something not quite right.
- 39:52Speaker 5: And I continue to really like the player, and you know,
- 39:54Speaker 5: think that he can contribute, and i'd expect at some
- 39:57Speaker 5: point with all the work that him and May put
- 39:59Speaker 5: in the summer together and you know, the you know
- 40:02Speaker 5: that May right now feels like I gotta get my
- 40:04Speaker 5: guy going. You know, I got to get this. You know,
- 40:06Speaker 5: you feel like there was a connection between them this summer.
- 40:08Speaker 5: Hopefully they're able to do it.
- 40:09Speaker 6: You know, some of that mental stuff with May too,
- 40:11Speaker 6: you know, back to him, because that's all I care
- 40:13Speaker 6: about it. But with you were talking about the practice
- 40:19Speaker 6: and all the all the work he did with Polk
- 40:20Speaker 6: and stuff like that. Do you remember like some of
- 40:22Speaker 6: those late practice got to have it plays on the
- 40:25Speaker 6: goal line, the red zone plays to him, you know,
- 40:28Speaker 6: and they well there was to Booty as well, and
- 40:30Speaker 6: I wanted to just bring it up because it was
- 40:33Speaker 6: like he would almost always talk after it. He goes, yeah,
- 40:35Speaker 6: you know, like Polk would say, well he looked at
- 40:38Speaker 6: me and said, you know, I'm coming to you because
- 40:40Speaker 6: pre snap he would recognize the coverage or whatever it was.
- 40:44Speaker 6: You know, he did the same thing with Booty on
- 40:46Speaker 6: a red zone thing. He gave him an opportunity, and
- 40:48Speaker 6: that's to me what the most impressive part was when
- 40:50Speaker 6: everyone was talking about some of the things you saw mentally,
- 40:54Speaker 6: like doing the right thing to his progression. He recognized
- 40:58Speaker 6: on the touchdown to Booty it was right away, you know,
- 41:02Speaker 6: it's going to be man on the outside and that's
- 41:05Speaker 6: going to be my matchup. That's where I'm going if
- 41:07Speaker 6: you somehow someone chose to clap back at Evan saying
- 41:12Speaker 6: his footwork was a mess on that play.
- 41:14Speaker 7: Which is which I don't get. I don't still, I
- 41:17Speaker 7: don't know.
- 41:19Speaker 6: I'm gonna I'm gonna harp on it because you know,
- 41:21Speaker 6: it's it was ridiculous. But the fact that he's able
- 41:24Speaker 6: to like, that's the stuff that we talked about that
- 41:27Speaker 6: separated Brady. You know, like just how many times now
- 41:31Speaker 6: I'm not saying that doing it once means you're Brady,
- 41:33Speaker 6: you know, obviously it doesn't. But that's the kind of
- 41:36Speaker 6: stuff that I would be excited about. Like his near turnovers.
- 41:40Speaker 6: I mean, I know we had three turnovers. He had
- 41:42Speaker 6: some others that would kind of loose, but it wasn't
- 41:44Speaker 6: because he was throwing into double coverage. It wasn't because
- 41:47Speaker 6: he was misreading making. He was making some inaccurate throws
- 41:51Speaker 6: at times, which which put the ball at peril at times,
- 41:54Speaker 6: which is not good. I'm not saying that's good, but
- 41:56Speaker 6: I would rather that. I'd rather him overthrow Demario Douglas
- 42:00Speaker 6: and get it picked off, then have him thrown into
- 42:02Speaker 6: a defensive team meeting and get it picked up. The same,
- 42:05Speaker 6: The results the same, Right, But I would rather have
- 42:07Speaker 6: the first than.
- 42:08Speaker 4: The last, because he work with the guy, right.
- 42:11Speaker 6: You know what, he fooled me. He was right there.
- 42:14Speaker 6: I didn't know. I didn't I didn't see the linebacker
- 42:16Speaker 6: underneath or whatever.
- 42:17Speaker 5: It's exactly what I said on the pregame show. That
- 42:18Speaker 5: was like, you know, just don't throw those plays. And
- 42:20Speaker 5: he didn't throw that. There were turnovers he didn't.
- 42:22Speaker 7: But you know that's with the draft.
- 42:25Speaker 8: You know, it goes back to like, would you rather
- 42:27Speaker 8: a guy like Zach Wilson who doesn't know what he's
- 42:30Speaker 8: seeing and doesn't see the field well and it's just
- 42:33Speaker 8: has all the talent, but you can't get him over
- 42:35Speaker 8: the hump because of that, or a mac Jones who
- 42:38Speaker 8: doesn't necessarily have the physical talent, or a guy like
- 42:41Speaker 8: Drake May who just is a little rough around the
- 42:43Speaker 8: edges he has he sees the field well, he's got
- 42:46Speaker 8: the arm talent, and now he's got to be a
- 42:48Speaker 8: little bit.
- 42:49Speaker 7: More consistently accurate.
- 42:50Speaker 8: Like I would take Drake May ten times out of
- 42:52Speaker 8: ten because you can work with that.
- 42:54Speaker 5: I mean, if you had to pick a like a thing,
- 42:55Speaker 5: like you're gonna get a quarterback and he's gonna have
- 42:57Speaker 5: one thing you gotta work on, I mean you that
- 42:59Speaker 5: very well might be the W and you pick like
- 43:00Speaker 5: you've got everything else. But it's got to settle down.
- 43:03Speaker 4: And all right, let's get to the TPX hotline and
- 43:06Speaker 4: some of our emailers, uh, because our listeners are chomping
- 43:10Speaker 4: at the bit to get involved.
- 43:12Speaker 5: Here.
- 43:12Speaker 4: We'll start with Sean and Vancouver. What's up Sean? Hey?
- 43:17Speaker 9: Everyone, you know, I think Matt has been getting better
- 43:19Speaker 9: every week on the pre and post team show, So
- 43:21Speaker 9: shout out to him.
- 43:23Speaker 4: We will get better faster, Poke or Matt.
- 43:27Speaker 9: Well, that's I think Matt unfortunately, but.
- 43:33Speaker 6: Okay, we might have a treat for you your listeners
- 43:36Speaker 6: this week.
- 43:39Speaker 5: What's gonna happen? Special guest, Special guests, Special guests.
- 43:43Speaker 6: Not necessarily new, but special given a lot away there
- 43:48Speaker 6: coming back.
- 43:48Speaker 9: I don't know.
- 43:50Speaker 5: What No.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Eight to fifteen. By the way, eight fifteen am Eastern,
- 43:54Speaker 6: don't miss it. Condemned the pregame breakfast Wimbledon.
- 43:59Speaker 9: Yeah, anyway, Mike on the pregame show. Maybe by the
- 44:03Speaker 9: number sixteen you meant Jim Plunkett and going back to
- 44:07Speaker 9: the early seventies with that throwback uniform, the pat Patriot
- 44:11Speaker 9: at midfield and Drake May's first touchdown was a deep
- 44:14Speaker 9: past the booty by Daryl Stingley's grandson. So the result
- 44:17Speaker 9: in nostalgia with that play and we're all encouraged by
- 44:22Speaker 9: what we call from May on Sunday. But my question
- 44:25Speaker 9: is will we make progress next week in London? That's
- 44:29Speaker 9: that's the big question. And how will Jacksonville Just sorry,
- 44:32Speaker 9: I'll leave it on that, thank you.
- 44:34Speaker 5: I mean, I thought we had some good discussion of that,
- 44:36Speaker 5: how they might start to adjust and you know, I
- 44:38Speaker 5: think I think the biggest thing for me, maybe for
- 44:40Speaker 5: the panel is you know, what kind of challenge is
- 44:43Speaker 5: it going to present for a rookie quarterback having to
- 44:45Speaker 5: travel internationally. You guys are going to be leaving Thursday night.
- 44:48Speaker 5: They'll have a practice on Friday in England. They'll have
- 44:50Speaker 5: a walkthrough on Saturday. You know, what are the challenges
- 44:53Speaker 5: for him, especially when you hear NFL veterans just talk
- 44:56Speaker 5: about how important it is for routine, and hey, what,
- 44:59Speaker 5: he's six seven weeks in. I mean, I'm sure he doesn't,
- 45:01Speaker 5: you know, isn't that embedded in his routine? So maybe
- 45:03Speaker 5: that can be a good thing, But I think it's
- 45:05Speaker 5: it's it's an interesting little challenge for him. And to
- 45:07Speaker 5: say it is.
- 45:07Speaker 4: It's a seven hour flight, I'm hoping, you know, including myself,
- 45:11Speaker 4: everyone gets some sleep because.
- 45:14Speaker 6: That long seven hours.
- 45:15Speaker 4: Yeah, that going that way, that's what they said, seven
- 45:18Speaker 4: hour flight.
- 45:20Speaker 5: How long was Germany?
- 45:21Speaker 6: Yeah? I felt like Germany was seven hours eight This
- 45:25Speaker 6: is five.
- 45:25Speaker 4: Yeah. But so it's a long flight, and then you
- 45:29Speaker 4: have the time change going forward. So you get off
- 45:33Speaker 4: the you know, you get on the plane, it's like
- 45:35Speaker 4: seven point thirty here PM and you get there. They
- 45:39Speaker 4: don't get to the hotel till nine o'clock in the
- 45:41Speaker 4: morning England, so you go right into it. You know.
- 45:46Speaker 4: So if you're going to get some sleep, it has
- 45:48Speaker 4: to be on the plane. So it makes it tough
- 45:51Speaker 4: for everybody.
- 45:52Speaker 5: You know, I'm so jealous. I forget which player was,
- 45:54Speaker 5: but somebody was like, how is the flight. He's like,
- 45:56Speaker 5: I don't know. I conked out in Boston. I woke
- 45:58Speaker 5: up in Germany last year.
- 46:00Speaker 4: Good for him, that was. But you know a lot
- 46:02Speaker 4: of people we'll talk about this, you know, like did
- 46:05Speaker 4: the Jaguars have a distinct advantage because they've been in
- 46:07Speaker 4: England the whole week and they played last week and
- 46:10Speaker 4: they stayed But that could also have a disadvantage because
- 46:13Speaker 4: like he knew, like the bits, we had those two
- 46:16Speaker 4: games on the road and you did the you know
- 46:18Speaker 4: that you stayed out there like we did last you know,
- 46:21Speaker 4: a couple of years ago, the camp the.
- 46:25Speaker 8: Players regular season, just Brown Trent Brown's training camp, but
- 46:30Speaker 8: Arizona dropping was a Cardinals Raiders back to back.
- 46:34Speaker 7: The Jacobe Myers game was the second.
- 46:36Speaker 4: Like, we don't even want to go to overtime. Webe
- 46:41Speaker 4: it's time, So maybe it's a disadvantage.
- 46:44Speaker 5: Who knows, how can we end this now? I don't
- 46:46Speaker 5: even want to get on that plane.
- 46:48Speaker 8: I feel comfortable making that joke now because the players
- 46:50Speaker 8: joke about it.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Okay.
- 46:52Speaker 6: The Jacksonville thing too, is that can go different ways.
- 46:55Speaker 6: I mean, obviously, you know, both teams are one and five.
- 46:58Speaker 6: But you know, we just talked for you know, you know,
- 47:01Speaker 6: fifty minutes about how excited we are just bite being
- 47:04Speaker 6: one and five. It's not like that in Jacksonville, right,
- 47:07Speaker 6: It's totally the opposite. They were supposed to be good
- 47:10Speaker 6: or at least competitive, and they haven't been. And I
- 47:14Speaker 6: don't know if you watch much, you know, if you
- 47:16Speaker 6: check out Red Zone Paul in the pregame show, there
- 47:19Speaker 6: was just an immense lack of effort on Jacksonville's part
- 47:23Speaker 6: defensively in the second half of the game. I thought
- 47:26Speaker 6: they they came to play. I thought that they were
- 47:28Speaker 6: the better team for the better part of the first half.
- 47:32Speaker 6: They dropped a couple of touchdown passes. Gabe Davis had
- 47:34Speaker 6: a really bad drop touchdown. They ended up having to
- 47:37Speaker 6: settle for a field goal, then moving the ball, and
- 47:40Speaker 6: then they started dropping the ball a little bit. And
- 47:43Speaker 6: then all of a sudden, the Bears looked like, you know,
- 47:47Speaker 6: a Super Bowl caliber team. And that wasn't just because
- 47:50Speaker 6: Chicago started playing well. They had to get some help.
- 47:53Speaker 7: I'm excited about this matchup for Drake Bay. I'm not
- 47:55Speaker 7: gonna lie this. This Jaguars defense is not.
- 47:58Speaker 6: Not good at thirty second in the league past defense.
- 48:01Speaker 8: Yeah, thirty second in the league in DVA, thirty first
- 48:04Speaker 8: in points allowed. They give up a lot of yards
- 48:06Speaker 8: to scramble, you know, mobile quarterbacks too. On the ground,
- 48:10Speaker 8: Caleb had a couple of big runs in the game
- 48:12Speaker 8: on Sunday.
- 48:13Speaker 7: They they've struggled a lot on defense.
- 48:16Speaker 4: So the Rookie of the Year push starts next week.
- 48:18Speaker 8: I wouldn't go that far, but he should have a
- 48:21Speaker 8: good game like this should he should not be The.
- 48:23Speaker 6: Question is terrors acl tomorrow, would he still be the
- 48:27Speaker 6: rookie of the year.
- 48:28Speaker 5: It's uh, it's I mean, in a little in some ways,
- 48:30Speaker 5: it's kind of a cautionary tale to me because I
- 48:33Speaker 5: really like Trayvon Walker coming out. I mean when I
- 48:35Speaker 5: first started the process, he wasn't the first overall pick,
- 48:37Speaker 5: and then he was. I know, Tyson Campbell hasn't played,
- 48:40Speaker 5: but yeah, you know, everybody here love Devin Lloyd. You know,
- 48:43Speaker 5: there are so many people and Patriots banging for Devin Lloyd.
- 48:46Speaker 5: Anton Harrison was another guy that everybody looked at as
- 48:49Speaker 5: a tackle that was like, you know, so they kind
- 48:51Speaker 5: of have a lot of like Brian Thomas, who I've
- 48:53Speaker 5: been like blown away by.
- 48:54Speaker 6: Watching him, Like Josh Allen, he's been quiet.
- 48:57Speaker 5: I mean, but they have like yeah, thank you. But
- 49:00Speaker 5: you look at like the pieces and when you know
- 49:02Speaker 5: you're looking at the Patriots like next offseason, the pieces
- 49:04Speaker 5: you want to check. And I feel like the Jaguars
- 49:07Speaker 5: have a lot of those players at least initially that
- 49:09Speaker 5: you would have thought would to check those bucks. But
- 49:11Speaker 5: it's not equal.
- 49:13Speaker 6: As how their offensive line has been. And I know
- 49:15Speaker 6: that that can be a huge you know, we know
- 49:18Speaker 6: what's happened here. But you have a quarterback who's at
- 49:22Speaker 6: least shown that he can be productive. I mean, I
- 49:24Speaker 6: don't know how good Trevor Lawrence is, but he's shown
- 49:26Speaker 6: he can be good at times. You have three receivers
- 49:28Speaker 6: that you probably feel decent about sure with Kirk Thomas
- 49:32Speaker 6: and Gabe Davis and right, you have a good you
- 49:35Speaker 6: have a good tight end in Evan Ingram. You have
- 49:37Speaker 6: two productive backs in Travis Atn and Tank Bigsby, And
- 49:42Speaker 6: yet you can't get more than I think they're averaging
- 49:45Speaker 6: nineteen points a game.
- 49:46Speaker 4: And you got a coach head coaches offensive minded.
- 49:49Speaker 6: Yes, yeah, won a Super Bowl, not a tight pants
- 49:51Speaker 6: guy though he's not a guy for sure.
- 49:55Speaker 8: Yeah, but they are offensively, you know, watching the Chicago game,
- 49:59Speaker 8: I I don't think Trevor Lawrence is the problem there.
- 50:01Speaker 6: Like Trevor I buddy played really well the other day.
- 50:03Speaker 6: I watched a lot of that game.
- 50:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 50:05Speaker 8: I mean, granted I haven't watched every game that he's played,
- 50:08Speaker 8: you know, closely, but he he had three touchdown passes
- 50:12Speaker 8: on one drive and they dropped off them all.
- 50:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 50:14Speaker 8: I mean, I don't know what else you want him
- 50:16Speaker 8: to do. They have fourteen drop passes this season, and.
- 50:19Speaker 6: They're getting dropped passes by like NFL. It's not like,
- 50:23Speaker 6: you know, you got some guy off the practice squad
- 50:26Speaker 6: who's filling in Davis. You know, Gabe Davis and Brian
- 50:30Speaker 6: Thomas and Christian Kirk should be you know, they shouldn't
- 50:34Speaker 6: be dropping fourteen passes combined.
- 50:36Speaker 8: I mean, he made the booty throw to Gabe Davis
- 50:39Speaker 8: down my right sideline that was like a forty fifty
- 50:42Speaker 8: yard bomb right on the money, and Gabe Davis just
- 50:44Speaker 8: drops it. Yeah, like he's walking, you know, running into
- 50:47Speaker 8: the end zone. He just drops me.
- 50:48Speaker 6: They come out in the second half, I think they
- 50:50Speaker 6: were down seventeen to three at half something like that.
- 50:53Speaker 6: They come out, they get the ball first play, you know,
- 50:56Speaker 6: nice seam shot to Evan and Ingram for like twenty
- 50:59Speaker 6: five yards. He fumbles, Yeah, like as he's getting tackled.
- 51:02Speaker 6: Like they just couldn't get out of their own way.
- 51:04Speaker 6: And you know, and I know that Lawrence hasn't been good,
- 51:08Speaker 6: like on the balance of the season, Lawrence has been
- 51:10Speaker 6: after the last But this game that.
- 51:12Speaker 7: He played the other day was really good.
- 51:14Speaker 6: And even the stats won't tell you. He was better
- 51:17Speaker 6: than the stats. Even the pick. The pick came late,
- 51:20Speaker 6: like the game, the game was long decided. He was
- 51:23Speaker 6: just you know, and he threw a he threw a pick.
- 51:25Speaker 6: But there's there's no reason for them to be that bad.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Now.
- 51:30Speaker 6: If they decide they're gonna just feel sorry for themselves
- 51:33Speaker 6: like Trent Brown did in in Vegas a couple of
- 51:36Speaker 6: years ago, then the Patriots could really have some fun
- 51:39Speaker 6: on Sunday. But if they show up to play, it's
- 51:41Speaker 6: not a The one in five record is not commensurate
- 51:44Speaker 6: with their talent.
- 51:45Speaker 8: Yeah, just really quickly with the Trayvon Walker. This is
- 51:50Speaker 8: a cautionary tale to me of having the number one
- 51:53Speaker 8: pick with a quarterback. It's a terrible place to be
- 51:56Speaker 8: when you have the number one overall pick in a draft,
- 51:58Speaker 8: but you have a quarterback. You don't need to take
- 52:01Speaker 8: a quarterback with the pick. And it wasn't a quarterback draft.
- 52:04Speaker 8: This one might have a couple like Shador and some
- 52:07Speaker 8: other guys. But when you get stuck with the number
- 52:10Speaker 8: one overall pick and you have Trevor Lawrence and you
- 52:12Speaker 8: have Drake May and then there's no quarterback that anybody
- 52:15Speaker 8: wants to trade up for, and you get stuck with
- 52:18Speaker 8: taking a player who's.
- 52:19Speaker 7: Really not worth the number one over trade out of there.
- 52:22Speaker 4: No, but that's the point nobody will trade with you.
- 52:24Speaker 6: The other thing about Walker too, I thought you were
- 52:26Speaker 6: going to say a cautionary tale of a guy who
- 52:28Speaker 6: kind of the longer the process went, the higher he
- 52:32Speaker 6: was regarded, you know. And it's like when I.
- 52:35Speaker 5: First started it, I was like, this seems guy in
- 52:37Speaker 5: our range and were were like fifteen or something at
- 52:39Speaker 5: that point, Like, you know, those to.
- 52:41Speaker 6: Me are the cautionary tails, ye, Mike Mamoula.
- 52:43Speaker 8: I mean, like Aiden Hutchinson's just sitting right there. Sauce
- 52:46Speaker 8: Gardner was in that draft. They passed on both those guys.
- 52:49Speaker 8: But if you're the Patriots and you get the number
- 52:51Speaker 8: one pick, you want to trade out of that pick. Yeah,
- 52:54Speaker 8: that's that's the ideal scenario. So you better hope one
- 52:57Speaker 8: of those quarterbacks to, you know, play as well down
- 52:59Speaker 8: the stretch.
- 53:00Speaker 4: Wants somebody to emerge. Sam in North Carolina, what's up?
- 53:03Speaker 5: Sam?
- 53:06Speaker 4: Hey?
- 53:06Speaker 5: Sam?
- 53:08Speaker 6: Oh?
- 53:09Speaker 10: Does he say anything that Drake May just continues the
- 53:11Speaker 10: christ in the face of adversity, Like he throws the
- 53:14Speaker 10: really bad overthrow and then he put down lady. I mean,
- 53:18Speaker 10: I feel like the guy looked pretty good. I mean
- 53:21Speaker 10: the turnovers and obviously, but for his first start and
- 53:25Speaker 10: do what he did, I think he was pretty helse.
- 53:27Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely, we were all saying I think Evin mentioned
- 53:30Speaker 4: and I think May said it himself. They asked him,
- 53:33Speaker 4: what did you like the best about that first game?
- 53:35Speaker 4: He said, you know, having to deal with adversity and
- 53:38Speaker 4: in getting better after it.
- 53:41Speaker 6: You know, there are a lot of things to like. Yeah,
- 53:43Speaker 6: what we saw toughness, you know, mental, mental and physical toughness,
- 53:48Speaker 6: you know, some of some of the athleticism, good stuff. Yeah,
- 53:51Speaker 6: he got hit and he got kept getting out.
- 53:53Speaker 5: It sounds like the guys in the huddle really, you know,
- 53:55Speaker 5: like his demeanor felt you know, some confidence from him,
- 53:58Speaker 5: which you know as a rookie, you're just happy to
- 54:00Speaker 5: see him out there.
- 54:00Speaker 8: Yeah, and just crazy like to have an operation where
- 54:06Speaker 8: like they can they can kind of score once they
- 54:09Speaker 8: crossed the fifty. Like, when's the last time we could
- 54:12Speaker 8: say that about this team? You always talk about Paul's things, like,
- 54:15Speaker 8: you know, an NFL play, Like there.
- 54:17Speaker 6: Were NFL plays on Sunday all over the.
- 54:19Speaker 8: Place, Like you know, Pop Douglas a thirty five yard touchdown,
- 54:23Speaker 8: he beats his man, Drake puts it on the money.
- 54:25Speaker 8: An NFL play houses it. I was like, when's the
- 54:27Speaker 8: last time we've seen.
- 54:28Speaker 4: That didn't get caught from behind?
- 54:30Speaker 5: Yeah, bumble or they weren't stopping.
- 54:33Speaker 6: But just like if it was all plays like the
- 54:37Speaker 6: one that he he bought time and hit Hunter Henry
- 54:40Speaker 6: for thirty yards, I wouldn't be anywhere near was excited. Nope,
- 54:43Speaker 6: Like those are plays that are going to happen because
- 54:45Speaker 6: he's really athletic and he's really good and once in
- 54:48Speaker 6: a while you're going to make those plays. But that
- 54:50Speaker 6: those are kind of useless if that's what you're relying on. Yeah,
- 54:53Speaker 6: but when it's one of you know, in a drive
- 54:55Speaker 6: of eight other plays that were normal plays, then that
- 54:58Speaker 6: makes you dangerous. Like that those plays become that much better.
- 55:01Speaker 5: Ice man, you're dangerous.
- 55:03Speaker 8: Even the touchdown to Henry, like he's a wide open receiver.
- 55:06Speaker 8: But like when you watch his eyes on that play,
- 55:08Speaker 8: it's a wide delay and he doesn't he doesn't go
- 55:11Speaker 8: to Henry right away. He sells it. You know, he
- 55:14Speaker 8: knows like I'm gonna look right to get the defense
- 55:17Speaker 8: so to draw away and then we're gonna come back
- 55:20Speaker 8: last second to Henry instead of staring it down like
- 55:23Speaker 8: those little things were what you know, all the quarterbacker
- 55:25Speaker 8: who has told me that he wasn't doing.
- 55:27Speaker 5: One thing I thought about with that play. Kind of
- 55:28Speaker 5: an interesting place. They had a couple of double teams
- 55:30Speaker 5: where you got to make sure those offensive linemen don't
- 55:32Speaker 5: get downfield, huh, Like I mean, you're really selling that
- 55:34Speaker 5: kind of run action and then he's gonna just pull
- 55:37Speaker 5: up and you know, that's an interesting time.
- 55:39Speaker 6: Especially the way they're calling everything this year.
- 55:41Speaker 5: Oh my god, such as.
- 55:42Speaker 6: A flag on every big play.
- 55:43Speaker 8: Yeah, the touchdown to Henry was a it was a
- 55:46Speaker 8: like a duo action where they had all the double
- 55:48Speaker 8: teams as the first time where I was like, oh,
- 55:50Speaker 8: like you run duo. Then you duo played action and
- 55:53Speaker 8: it worked like boom.
- 55:56Speaker 5: That's how you do it.
- 55:59Speaker 4: Podcast at Patriots dot com. As the email address, Quentin
- 56:02Speaker 4: from Arizona writes in says, I'm a longtime listener, but
- 56:06Speaker 4: first time emailer. Thank you. I want to reach out
- 56:09Speaker 4: to say how impressed I was with Drake May's performance
- 56:11Speaker 4: during the game. Is arm athleticism, ability to drive the
- 56:15Speaker 4: ball down the field gives me actual hope for this
- 56:17Speaker 4: team moving forward? Given his performance? What other position groups
- 56:21Speaker 4: do you think the Patriots should focus on in the
- 56:23Speaker 4: upcoming Dwell listen, I mean, well.
- 56:26Speaker 7: Can we talk about your defense now, Mike?
- 56:27Speaker 5: Oh, geez, Danny, because you know we have to.
- 56:30Speaker 6: It's I think quarterback is the only thing that's off.
- 56:32Speaker 5: To go back to quarterback.
- 56:34Speaker 7: Can we talk about your defense?
- 56:35Speaker 6: I I yeah, I'll just ask having one small question.
- 56:38Speaker 6: It's kind of like a yes no, and then we
- 56:40Speaker 6: can get to the defense. The driving the ball downfield.
- 56:43Speaker 6: Obviously we all saw the forty yard play. Did you
- 56:45Speaker 6: do you have the numbers like his average average air
- 56:48Speaker 6: yards or whatever? Per attempt or how many passes travel
- 56:52Speaker 6: beyond say, fifteen yards in the air.
- 56:54Speaker 8: I don't have it off the top of my head,
- 56:56Speaker 8: but is airyards per attempt were season high for a Patriot.
- 57:00Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 57:01Speaker 8: It was also the highest area arper attempt against man coverage.
- 57:05Speaker 8: It was the highest passer rating against man coverage against
- 57:09Speaker 8: the blitz.
- 57:10Speaker 6: For the Patriots. Yeah. Like I was wondering, like now
- 57:13Speaker 6: that now that we have an NFL offense or but
- 57:18Speaker 6: I was, I was that's true because they really didn't
- 57:20Speaker 6: They really weren't all that productive. Yeah, I was just
- 57:23Speaker 6: wondering how that stood in comparison, you know to other teams,
- 57:27Speaker 6: which I haven't really spent five seconds comparing to. Yeah,
- 57:30Speaker 6: you know, to this point.
- 57:31Speaker 5: I don't want to take the show down with.
- 57:35Speaker 6: Got to talk about the defense now.
- 57:36Speaker 5: It's uh, you know, and again the injuries, YadA, YadA, YadA.
- 57:39Speaker 5: But at a certain point you got to start to
- 57:40Speaker 5: play better, and you know, I just I don't know
- 57:42Speaker 5: what point, Paul in this summer, like we said, twenty
- 57:44Speaker 5: twenty defense like that. You know, that's kind of the
- 57:47Speaker 5: vibes you're getting that there's at least a handful of
- 57:50Speaker 5: spots where there are just guys there right now, and
- 57:52Speaker 5: guys who aren't really progressing or getting better. And you
- 57:55Speaker 5: saw with the big explosive run plays. I mean, you know,
- 57:58Speaker 5: go back two weeks ago with Jacksonville, they had some
- 58:00Speaker 5: you know, big big Spy had what like a sixty
- 58:02Speaker 5: five yard I mean, they had some big plays on that's.
- 58:05Speaker 6: Been their leading rusher. So and I know that it
- 58:08Speaker 6: looks like at N is probably not going to play.
- 58:10Speaker 5: That's where the hamp scares. The big plays they just
- 58:14Speaker 5: i mean, Girod summed it up. It's it's tackling. It's
- 58:17Speaker 5: you know, run fits, missing things that you're i mean
- 58:20Speaker 5: one hundred percent they're missing Bentley. But at the same time,
- 58:23Speaker 5: it's like, was Bentley that much?
- 58:24Speaker 6: It's been every four weeks right, Like I understand, you know,
- 58:28Speaker 6: you're scrambling around without a guy who was a good
- 58:30Speaker 6: run stopper in the middle, but you haven't been able
- 58:34Speaker 6: to fix it. No, Like, why why hasn't it gotten
- 58:36Speaker 6: any better?
- 58:37Speaker 5: And it's it's and it's not just the individual players,
- 58:39Speaker 5: it's it's the team. It's the team defense.
- 58:41Speaker 6: You know, this doesn't look quite right and situational and
- 58:44Speaker 6: team like, And this is something I got kind of
- 58:48Speaker 6: annoyed last week, Mike. I remember sitting next to you
- 58:50Speaker 6: when DeMarcus Covington was talking and you know, he's citing
- 58:53Speaker 6: the numbers like you know, and I forget exactly what
- 58:56Speaker 6: Miami went on third down, and I'm like, yeah, well,
- 58:59Speaker 6: the game deciding drive was a fifteen play drive that
- 59:02Speaker 6: didn't require any third downs, like they had like one
- 59:04Speaker 6: third down conversion on the on the Christianelli's pass on
- 59:07Speaker 6: the first doesn't count in third down conversion. That was
- 59:10Speaker 6: its bi penalty and that was it, and that was
- 59:12Speaker 6: it like the rest of them, Like, you didn't stop anybody,
- 59:14Speaker 6: So why are you citing this number that's that's good
- 59:17Speaker 6: when you didn't play good defense. And this week it
- 59:19Speaker 6: was even more accentuated. Again, I think they were four
- 59:22Speaker 6: to eleven on third downs, so it wasn't a horrible
- 59:24Speaker 6: performance on third down, but the other team scored forty
- 59:28Speaker 6: one points. Like you had a couple of spots that
- 59:31Speaker 6: you will put in that were bad spots that you
- 59:32Speaker 6: handled okay, Like I think after the pick, they forced
- 59:36Speaker 6: a forty yard field goal that the guy missed the chippy,
- 59:39Speaker 6: but that was good defense not to allow a touchdown.
- 59:42Speaker 6: You know, and I think they had another field goal
- 59:44Speaker 6: that was a basically a four and out, like they
- 59:46Speaker 6: took over in field goal range and right, they didn't
- 59:49Speaker 6: even allow a first down. But there were others that
- 59:52Speaker 6: you took over on like the twenty nine yard line
- 59:54Speaker 6: and took them two places to score a touchdown, right,
- 59:56Speaker 6: you know, like I understand you will put in some
- 59:58Speaker 6: bad spots, but you are allowed to stop.
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: And I think that's what's like frustrating, is that there
- 1:00:02Speaker 5: are moments where you're like, oh, there it is, you know,
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: like they had a couple of those kind of possessions defensively,
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: but it's just not consistent.
- 1:00:08Speaker 6: And didn't you feel like and I know, like Mike
- 1:00:11Speaker 6: got mad at me this is. This might be the
- 1:00:13Speaker 6: first time this happened. Mike got mad at me in
- 1:00:15Speaker 6: the middle of the fourth quarter because I was in
- 1:00:17Speaker 6: full this game has been over for a half hour mode,
- 1:00:20Speaker 6: and Mike still thought it was competitive. And I I
- 1:00:22Speaker 6: remember I inadvertently this is made a mocking laugh, and
- 1:00:26Speaker 6: I think Mike got mad at me. This is. But
- 1:00:27Speaker 6: it was right after the touchdown that the Patriots scored
- 1:00:31Speaker 6: to make it a thirteen point game, and I believe
- 1:00:34Speaker 6: it took Houston about forty four seconds to go sixty
- 1:00:37Speaker 6: five seventy five yards for a touchdown, and it wasn't
- 1:00:41Speaker 6: really a competitive drive the last fifty four of which
- 1:00:44Speaker 6: obviously would have run. But to me, the big, the
- 1:00:45Speaker 6: more telling play was the third and five that was
- 1:00:48Speaker 6: completed like so effortlessly over the middle. I think it
- 1:00:52Speaker 6: was tanked. Del They can't stop anybody when they need
- 1:00:57Speaker 6: to stop anybody, And that's been a bad, bad trend
- 1:00:59Speaker 6: right now, That's what it is. And that combination so
- 1:01:02Speaker 6: that like the late game situational kind of like you
- 1:01:05Speaker 6: needed a miracle, You're down twenty points in the fourth quarter,
- 1:01:07Speaker 6: you need a miracle. Yeah, okay, you can't even get
- 1:01:11Speaker 6: to the point where we're even close to getting the
- 1:01:13Speaker 6: miracle because you get up the touchdown that it immediately
- 1:01:16Speaker 6: restores the twenty point advantage, right like let alone like, hey,
- 1:01:20Speaker 6: you know what, let's put some game pressure on them
- 1:01:22Speaker 6: here and make them have to get a first down
- 1:01:23Speaker 6: to close this game out.
- 1:01:24Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 1:01:26Speaker 6: But the bigger thing to me is the way they
- 1:01:28Speaker 6: start these games. The other team gets the ball and
- 1:01:31Speaker 6: goes right down the field. Then they get it again
- 1:01:33Speaker 6: and go right down the field again, like you can't
- 1:01:35Speaker 6: be down fourteen to nothing in these games and expect
- 1:01:38Speaker 6: to win, especially against good teams.
- 1:01:39Speaker 5: And they were, and they were close to getting a
- 1:01:41Speaker 5: you know, to getting a stop there a couple of times.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: I mean they had some third downs in the penalty
- 1:01:44Speaker 5: field goals stop stock which you know, but I again,
- 1:01:47Speaker 5: like that's another thing where I'm like that might happen.
- 1:01:50Speaker 5: First drive a game, the team comes out with a
- 1:01:52Speaker 5: good plan, they go right down the field we saw
- 1:01:53Speaker 5: with the old Patriots defense a million. Then they get
- 1:01:55Speaker 5: a stop. It's three nothing. Okay, this is what they
- 1:01:57Speaker 5: were doing. Let's adjust the next drive though, then it's
- 1:02:00Speaker 5: three and out or then it's you know, a punt.
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: But but I can get mad at you at that point.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: The only one I got mad at you at was
- 1:02:05Speaker 5: on the map PHO Marcus Jones interception. And I don't
- 1:02:09Speaker 5: even know if I should have gotten mad at you
- 1:02:10Speaker 5: in that one, because I think you were trying to
- 1:02:12Speaker 5: make another point because the other one was the first
- 1:02:15Speaker 5: interference was was the yeah, the second one I said
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: it to Fred.
- 1:02:20Speaker 6: Live but Fred, actually Fred's been having a really like
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: uncanny like fit, like Live being obnoxious. No, but fred
- 1:02:33Speaker 6: Live goes no, no, no, it's mapoo underneath like Live
- 1:02:36Speaker 6: because I was like houses on map And then I
- 1:02:38Speaker 6: watched the replay. I kind of thought that was a
- 1:02:40Speaker 6: ticky tack call. I thought there was more contact in
- 1:02:43Speaker 6: the end zone on the play that ended up getting picked.
- 1:02:46Speaker 6: I didn't really think either one of them was interference.
- 1:02:48Speaker 5: And that's and that's why I wasn't right to.
- 1:02:49Speaker 6: Get But if you if you were going to call one,
- 1:02:51Speaker 6: I would have called the one in the end zone
- 1:02:53Speaker 6: like that's where I draped on his chest with his
- 1:02:55Speaker 6: arms on top of him before.
- 1:02:57Speaker 7: The I thought, I thought good timing as well.
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: I do too. I wouldn't have called it. I said
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: that live, I wouldn't have called I wouldn't have called
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: either one of them. But they did call one of them.
- 1:03:08Speaker 8: I think defensively, so right, defensively, they're twenty ninth in
- 1:03:11Speaker 8: the league in DVA, they are a bottom five defense
- 1:03:13Speaker 8: in the league. And I just can't get to it
- 1:03:17Speaker 8: the point where, yeah, they have injuries, they're missing guys,
- 1:03:20Speaker 8: but to go from top ten to twenty ninth in
- 1:03:23Speaker 8: the league like overnight, like I just that's the I
- 1:03:26Speaker 8: can't get there that it's all the injuries, Like it's
- 1:03:29Speaker 8: big injuries, you know, Barmore, Bentley, you Jabriel Peppers's situation,
- 1:03:33Speaker 8: like those there big players in this defense. But you
- 1:03:36Speaker 8: don't bottom out, like you don't lose those guys, and then.
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: That's not the difference between having a really good defense
- 1:03:41Speaker 6: and the worst defense in the league.
- 1:03:42Speaker 5: Yeah, and even on like the big touchdown round, like
- 1:03:44Speaker 5: Dugger misses the tackle terribly, you know, like and it's
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: like your big like those other guys are hurt, you
- 1:03:50Speaker 5: need Kyle Dugger, the newly named captain, to make that
- 1:03:53Speaker 5: tackle as a safety is well, you know what he's
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: supposed to do. And those are the things that's.
- 1:03:56Speaker 6: Just keep me.
- 1:03:57Speaker 8: The last touchdown like didn't bother me quite as much
- 1:04:00Speaker 8: as I was kind of with Paul like other than
- 1:04:02Speaker 8: Drake Baygoore. But they but the the first big run
- 1:04:08Speaker 8: the fifty nine yard or like I just even from
- 1:04:11Speaker 8: an alignment perspective, I don't know how how they were
- 1:04:14Speaker 8: expecting to stop that, Like they they were tilted to
- 1:04:17Speaker 8: the weak side of the formation and they had the
- 1:04:19Speaker 8: Texans just had the numbers.
- 1:04:21Speaker 7: Like it was it's just simple stuff, you know.
- 1:04:23Speaker 8: They they bring a blitz off the ball and I
- 1:04:27Speaker 8: don't want to sign blame because I don't know, but
- 1:04:29Speaker 8: they leave Joe Mixon uncovered in the flat, so like
- 1:04:32Speaker 8: the blitz gets home, but there's nobody covering Joe Mixon.
- 1:04:35Speaker 8: So it's a twenty yard play. They got beat again
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: on the same post cross concept for a twenty six
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: yard explosive by Stefan Diggs that San Francisco killed them
- 1:04:45Speaker 8: with two weeks ago.
- 1:04:46Speaker 7: So it's repeat plays.
- 1:04:47Speaker 8: It's like the same things over and over again, and
- 1:04:50Speaker 8: they they've completely cratered. So like, how do you not
- 1:04:53Speaker 8: point to the coaching Like it's hard for me not to.
- 1:04:56Speaker 6: Yeah, and I did you know my memory was was
- 1:04:59Speaker 6: right on this one, because you know, it's like we're
- 1:05:01Speaker 6: going back. So you're within thirteen. There's nine minutes left,
- 1:05:05Speaker 6: thing and the game is over for all intents and purposes.
- 1:05:07Speaker 6: But you're thinking to yourself and I know, like this
- 1:05:10Speaker 6: is where I thought you were.
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: Upset again to score make a stop, but like.
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: Touchdown to get within thirteen. Now make a stop and say, Okay,
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: I'm not saying I'm just saying. Right the first play,
- 1:05:22Speaker 6: they dial up a beautiful little screen tight end screen
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: to Dalton Schultz and Evan immediately points ud. He goes
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: that play should have been a touchdown. I don't know
- 1:05:30Speaker 6: how that And you watch the replay the ball literally
- 1:05:33Speaker 6: hit Shultz in the face mask. I don't know how
- 1:05:35Speaker 6: we didn't catch it. So you get that break to
- 1:05:37Speaker 6: make it second and ten, and you're how many plays
- 1:05:40Speaker 6: they needed to go seventy yards after that?
- 1:05:42Speaker 5: Tell me not a lot three? Oh, that's not good.
- 1:05:45Speaker 6: They ran the ball for five yards, they threw the
- 1:05:47Speaker 6: ball for eleven yards, and then they ran it for
- 1:05:50Speaker 6: fifty four yards in a touchdown. Like, even after the
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: other team is trying to help you, you still can't
- 1:05:58Speaker 6: get out of your own way.
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: That's not easy. But you know what is easy, But

- 1:08:19Speaker 12: now mean's next for residential delivery only?
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: All right, good morning?
- 1:08:26Speaker 13: You know said this last night, obviously disappointed in our
- 1:08:29Speaker 13: performance overall. You know, we just got to play better.
- 1:08:33Speaker 13: We got to coach better. We you know, we got
- 1:08:35Speaker 13: to win a turnover battle. We gotta do a better
- 1:08:37Speaker 13: job with penalties. Early in the game, had a lot
- 1:08:40Speaker 13: of penalties that just you know, nothing good comes from that.
- 1:08:44Speaker 13: I would say, sit in the second half, it kind
- 1:08:46Speaker 13: of settled down as far as the penalties were concerned,
- 1:08:49Speaker 13: but we just can't play that way defensively, I would
- 1:08:52Speaker 13: say it just big plays. Big plays killed us. You know,
- 1:08:55Speaker 13: they had two runs that you know, we're over fifty yards.
- 1:08:59Speaker 13: You take those away and it looks a lot better.
- 1:09:02Speaker 13: But at the same time, like that's what the NFL is.
- 1:09:04Speaker 13: You got to limit those big plays and then offensively
- 1:09:08Speaker 13: we have to make big plays. I thought yesterday overall,
- 1:09:11Speaker 13: Drake did a good job with his reads and getting
- 1:09:14Speaker 13: the ball out.
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: Was it perfect?
- 1:09:16Speaker 14: No?
- 1:09:16Speaker 13: Will he get better, absolutely, but we got to do
- 1:09:19Speaker 13: a better job, you know, supporting you know, a rookie quarterback. Yesterday,
- 1:09:24Speaker 13: the run game, something that we've been good at for
- 1:09:26Speaker 13: the majority of the year, was not existent, and we
- 1:09:30Speaker 13: just got to get back to the basics and.
- 1:09:35Speaker 15: What that will open up for questions. We'll start with
- 1:09:37Speaker 15: Christopher Gasper, followed by Doug Kaylee, Chris christ.
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: Christopher Price is here.
- 1:09:49Speaker 16: No, I don't know if Christopher Gasper's here.
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: Oh geez, I'm sorry, that's my fault. Chris Price. Sorry,
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: thank you, Stacy.
- 1:09:56Speaker 3: I appreciate that.
- 1:09:57Speaker 16: Girod. Specific to Drake's performance, I'm curious to get your
- 1:10:01Speaker 16: opinion on what you might have seen from him after
- 1:10:03Speaker 16: rewatching the game, what you might not necessarily been cognizant
- 1:10:07Speaker 16: of or aware of in the immediate aftermath of Sunday's contest.
- 1:10:11Speaker 13: I mean, we knew he could make plays with his legs.
- 1:10:13Speaker 13: We knew he had a good arm and can really
- 1:10:15Speaker 13: push the ball down the field. I would say the
- 1:10:16Speaker 13: thing that was a pleasant surprise. He did take some
- 1:10:20Speaker 13: shots yesterday. I think there were one or two where
- 1:10:23Speaker 13: he got up a little bit slow, But just his
- 1:10:25Speaker 13: overall toughness I think was on display yesterday.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: Thank you, Thank you.
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: Good morning.
- 1:10:34Speaker 17: Draw questions for you, what made Ben Brown the right
- 1:10:39Speaker 17: guy to start at center in that game yesterday?
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: And then also, how do you feel.
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: Like he performed? Look, this is one of those things
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: I've never seen it before.
- 1:10:49Speaker 13: God being able to come in here, you know, after
- 1:10:51Speaker 13: four or five days and become a starting center.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: So he did a great job.
- 1:10:55Speaker 13: I would I would say he probably was our best
- 1:10:57Speaker 13: lineman yesterday, and he did a good job for us.
- 1:11:01Speaker 13: He did a good job all through the week during practice.
- 1:11:04Speaker 3: Uh. And then went out there and.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Performed for the work and I love quick one.
- 1:11:09Speaker 17: On Joe Cardona, I think he was listening with a
- 1:11:11Speaker 17: calf injury on the injury report, but then I think
- 1:11:14Speaker 17: that was updated to a personal reason. Just want to
- 1:11:17Speaker 17: get some clarification on why Cardona missed the game.
- 1:11:20Speaker 13: Yeah, I don't want to talk about the exact incident.
- 1:11:25Speaker 3: He had a family matter that he needed to attend
- 1:11:28Speaker 3: to and we allowed that to happen. Thank you.
- 1:11:37Speaker 15: Next question, Mike Greese, and over the second guys, there's
- 1:11:39Speaker 15: some background noise. I'm gonna viewe all lines and then
- 1:11:42Speaker 15: we'll come back on you. Okay, we'll try that again.
- 1:11:53Speaker 18: Mike Greece, you mentioned the two runs over fifty yards
- 1:11:58Speaker 18: when you went back to watch them on the tape.
- 1:12:00Speaker 19: What did you see that contributed to allowing those runs?
- 1:12:05Speaker 13: Poor run fits, poor tackling, and then we couldn't catch them.
- 1:12:12Speaker 18: And in the game situation question that worked out for
- 1:12:17Speaker 18: you at the end of the second quarter on the
- 1:12:20Speaker 18: illegal shift penalty, when you I think you didn't decline
- 1:12:26Speaker 18: it to make it third and ten.
- 1:12:29Speaker 3: No, we declined.
- 1:12:30Speaker 13: We declined it because it was a seven yard We
- 1:12:32Speaker 13: thought those two yards would be beneficial if we had
- 1:12:35Speaker 13: to kick.
- 1:12:35Speaker 20: The ball, gotcha. I just wanted to follow up on
- 1:12:38Speaker 20: that and they end up missing the field, right, Yes,
- 1:12:41Speaker 20: got it? Okay, thank you, Mark Daniels.
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: Steel Adrian, good morning.
- 1:12:50Speaker 21: But some shuffling going on with your receiver depth chart
- 1:12:54Speaker 21: of late I mean type one third and healthy scratch
- 1:12:57Speaker 21: kJ Osbourne didn't play any snaps and obviously Khon Boody
- 1:13:00Speaker 21: played the most apps.
- 1:13:01Speaker 3: I just wonder if you could sort of, you.
- 1:13:02Speaker 21: Know, tell us, you know, what's going on to some
- 1:13:05Speaker 21: of the shuffling and changes over the first six weeks
- 1:13:07Speaker 21: off with your receiver group.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you could put it on. It's the same thing
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: that we're going through with the offensive line.
- 1:13:12Speaker 13: I think you know, when I look at the film,
- 1:13:15Speaker 13: it's Booty, it's Pop, it's Osbourne, and we need the
- 1:13:20Speaker 13: rest of those guys to step up and make plus
- 1:13:23Speaker 13: Thank you, Thank you, and Steel.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Mor and Girod.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Sorry sorry that I'm met Born. That's a Born. Sorry
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: you said Osborne. I met I'm at Bourne. Sorry about that.
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: Just to clear it up. Everyone else to step up, Yeah, gotcha.
- 1:13:44Speaker 14: Talking to Pop Douglas in the locker room yesterday, kind
- 1:13:47Speaker 14: of to the point about the receivers. Pop mentioned that
- 1:13:50Speaker 14: he understands that the offense is young and that they
- 1:13:54Speaker 14: all need to.
- 1:13:55Speaker 2: Grow together, so to speak.
- 1:13:57Speaker 14: Is that something that you the coaching state are cognizant of.
- 1:14:01Speaker 14: And what's it like to just hear from a player
- 1:14:04Speaker 14: taking kind of accountability looking around the room and you know,
- 1:14:07Speaker 14: taking those steps together as a group.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: Have you seen have you seen that before?
- 1:14:11Speaker 2: Maybe in your career.
- 1:14:13Speaker 13: Look, you want to go out there and be able
- 1:14:15Speaker 13: to play, you know with a certain set of guys
- 1:14:19Speaker 13: for the season. Obviously, through injuries and things like that,
- 1:14:22Speaker 13: stuff pops up. That's why I always preach to you know,
- 1:14:25Speaker 13: some of the backup players to prepare us if you're
- 1:14:27Speaker 13: the starter. But I understand, you know, whether we're talking
- 1:14:29Speaker 13: about receivers or linebackers, whatever, you know, you want to
- 1:14:33Speaker 13: have that level of being comfortable with the guys out
- 1:14:36Speaker 13: there with you. And you know, we gotta we got
- 1:14:38Speaker 13: to study the ship at some point in time, whether
- 1:14:40Speaker 13: we're talking about the offensive line or the receivers, but
- 1:14:43Speaker 13: we definitely need to settle the ship.
- 1:14:45Speaker 3: And you know, having Drake out there, but you can
- 1:14:48Speaker 3: throw them in the same bucket.
- 1:14:49Speaker 13: You know, he needs to get on the same page
- 1:14:51Speaker 13: as the receivers, the tight ends, and the backs, and
- 1:14:54Speaker 13: that comes to just playing, uh, playing alongside each other.
- 1:15:01Speaker 2: Next question, Doug Kye, do you.
- 1:15:07Speaker 17: Have any update on the severity of Viderian Lowe's injury?
- 1:15:10Speaker 2: Talking about the offensive one.
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: He's supposed to get an MRIH this morning.
- 1:15:15Speaker 17: So, how do you feel like obviously Zach Thomas hasn't
- 1:15:19Speaker 17: played a lot of tackle for you guys, I think
- 1:15:20Speaker 17: we've seen the garden practice. How do you feel like
- 1:15:22Speaker 17: he was able to go in there and perform?
- 1:15:27Speaker 13: You know, I would say there were some ups and
- 1:15:29Speaker 13: some downs. Once again, just like you said, he hasn't
- 1:15:31Speaker 13: done it a lot for us, uh, but just being
- 1:15:34Speaker 13: ready on the sideline and hopping in there against two
- 1:15:37Speaker 13: good defensive vents. Yeah, I think he did okay.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: Thanks, Thanks Sophie Rolling for all.
- 1:15:44Speaker 22: By mis Hi Jerrod, I wanted to ask you were
- 1:15:48Speaker 22: very critical of the defense last night, Now that you've
- 1:15:52Speaker 22: had some time, was specifically was kind of the biggest
- 1:15:56Speaker 22: issue last night?
- 1:15:56Speaker 13: Did you see one thing else say, is you know
- 1:15:59Speaker 13: the turnovers in the field position.
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: They were put in some tough situations.
- 1:16:04Speaker 13: I would say our red aread defense was poor and
- 1:16:08Speaker 13: then really just a big place.
- 1:16:10Speaker 3: After that.
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: Two final questions, Blanke reas into Quota Raine.
- 1:16:18Speaker 19: They give you opportunity to return quite a few picks, Gerada,
- 1:16:21Speaker 19: I wanted to get your thoughts on what you I
- 1:16:23Speaker 19: don't know if you get the chance to watch a
- 1:16:25Speaker 19: special teams tape, but how did you feel like you
- 1:16:27Speaker 19: guys handled that and was that something that was a surprise.
- 1:16:32Speaker 13: That I always watch all the film offensive defense and
- 1:16:35Speaker 13: special teams, and I would say, that's just Houston saying, look,
- 1:16:39Speaker 13: we're tougher than you guys. That's that's the that's the
- 1:16:42Speaker 13: reality of the situation. If they kick it like that,
- 1:16:45Speaker 13: they're saying, all right, you're not going to get past it.
- 1:16:48Speaker 13: You're not going to get past the thirty yard line.
- 1:16:50Speaker 13: And we just didn't show up in that in that
- 1:16:52Speaker 13: phase of the game.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: The last question to Quotterine a draught, just wondering what
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: you've seen from Jalen Polk early this season and maybe
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: was contributed to some of the struggles he's had early on.
- 1:17:08Speaker 13: I think he just, you know, he needs to get
- 1:17:10Speaker 13: over this mental hump. You know, you gotta you gotta
- 1:17:12Speaker 13: eliminate the drop passes. You got to be better blocking,
- 1:17:15Speaker 13: which he did a great job in college at that
- 1:17:17Speaker 13: and at times throughout the season.
- 1:17:19Speaker 3: He just has to continue to grow.
- 1:17:21Speaker 13: He has to work harder, he has to pay more
- 1:17:22Speaker 13: attention to the details, and we fully expected him to
- 1:17:25Speaker 13: grow into a receiver that's dependable on run and pass nowns.
- 1:17:29Speaker 3: I think it makes sense.
- 1:17:35Speaker 6: And now great moments in.
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: History, the media in Green Bay and how they treat
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: you in Green Bay versus in New York and chose
- 1:17:45Speaker 5: in New York.
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, And what's which is another reason why
- 1:17:48Speaker 6: I'm not sure to work.
- 1:17:49Speaker 23: Yeah, the first slip up, they'll be all over and
- 1:17:51Speaker 23: they'll cover the daily with a little scotch and and relax.
- 1:17:56Speaker 23: They'll be like, you don't tell me when to realize.
- 1:18:00Speaker 23: I'll relax when you get them in the playoffs. How
- 1:18:01Speaker 23: does that sound?
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: You know that's the kind of adversarial relationship there can be.
- 1:18:06Speaker 6: Remember your boy the urine stream. Yeah, business of the business.
- 1:18:13Speaker 6: He broken up journalistic rules to be out of the business. Yeah,
- 1:18:17Speaker 6: the Jets broke them.
- 1:18:17Speaker 8: I don't know, I know it's I know it could
- 1:18:20Speaker 8: easily go the other way and they could be in
- 1:18:21Speaker 8: the Super Bowl next year. Nobody would be that shocked,
- 1:18:23Speaker 8: But I just it's not I feel like it's being
- 1:18:27Speaker 8: like they are a top ten team in power rankings
- 1:18:29Speaker 8: and all this stuff, and it's it's being talked about
- 1:18:31Speaker 8: like it's like guaranteed that that's gonna work.
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: Think about like Brice Hall being back, you know, like.
- 1:18:36Speaker 7: Yeah, that doesn't move the needle from me.
- 1:18:37Speaker 5: Well who's who's Who's?
- 1:18:38Speaker 7: But I agree, I agree with what you're saying. I'm
- 1:18:40Speaker 7: just saying, I don't.
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: Who would you pick them in Miami? Just take Patriots
- 1:18:43Speaker 5: out of the take Patriots and Bills out of the situation.
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: Who do you think is the better team between the
- 1:18:47Speaker 6: Jets of Aaron Rodgers and Jets Jets? I think Miami
- 1:18:51Speaker 6: what I think based on what their talent and the Jets. Now,
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: now if you're asking me who I'm going to invest in,
- 1:18:59Speaker 6: I think the there's a better chance that Aaron Rodgers
- 1:19:01Speaker 6: plays seventeen games than two. Yeah, that's a big one, right,
- 1:19:04Speaker 6: But if I think at full strength, I think Miami's better. Yeah,
- 1:19:09Speaker 6: that that's okay. You don't have to agree. He's like
- 1:19:11Speaker 6: he's disgusted that you see that, he like turned the
- 1:19:13Speaker 6: other way, like this guy.
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: That's another great moment.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: All right back here on Patriots Unfilterday. Five to five
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: Pass five hundred is the tpx Houtline podcast at Patriots
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: dot com as the email address.
- 1:19:27Speaker 6: Can I just say that I predicted Aaron Rodgers would
- 1:19:30Speaker 6: play seventeen games and he plays.
- 1:19:31Speaker 7: That was last year, right, four snaps?
- 1:19:33Speaker 6: He played four snaps.
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: Let's get it, let's get Jeffrey in Canada writes it.
- 1:19:40Speaker 4: He says, I'll plug my nose and ignore the coaching
- 1:19:43Speaker 4: and defense. This week May was fun to watch. We've
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: learned that no socks is Larry David. He's never happy.
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: I've known Paul's role on the show and respect his
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: voice of reason, but it's been five years of awful.
- 1:19:55Speaker 4: Let us just have one week.
- 1:19:57Speaker 6: I'll add that's where I was, that's where I am.
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: I'll admit that Drake had some rookie plays and mistakes,
- 1:20:03Speaker 4: but let's review the turnovers. Interceptions belong to the quarterback,
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: no matter what the fumble he had less than two
- 1:20:10Speaker 4: and a half seconds after the tackle. Seventy five got
- 1:20:12Speaker 4: beat instantly at the snap and the defensive end is
- 1:20:15Speaker 4: hitting him as he starts his throw. I'm told that
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: that's May's fault. That's not true. Many quarterbacks young and old,
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: fumble on those types of plays every week in the NFL.
- 1:20:25Speaker 4: If it's Rogers or Mahomes, that's the O line's fault.
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: And I'm also on the quarterback is strong.
- 1:20:32Speaker 7: Yes, that's I say, fifty to fifty.
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: I'm also impressed that May can basically recite every play
- 1:20:36Speaker 4: in the game at the press conference.
- 1:20:39Speaker 6: Yeah, I if that was impressive, then I should have
- 1:20:42Speaker 6: a statue.
- 1:20:43Speaker 5: That's true.
- 1:20:44Speaker 7: I don't necessarily discount that, though. Who are we talking?
- 1:20:48Speaker 8: I think it might have been TC McCartney, the quarterbacks coach,
- 1:20:52Speaker 8: said that in the preseason, May would come off the
- 1:20:55Speaker 8: field and they would ask him, you know what, what
- 1:20:58Speaker 8: did you see out there? And he would recite exactly
- 1:21:03Speaker 8: verbat him what happened on the field, and you know,
- 1:21:06Speaker 8: McCartney pointed.
- 1:21:07Speaker 7: Out that that's that's good.
- 1:21:09Speaker 6: You know, that's what you want.
- 1:21:10Speaker 7: You know, if he comes to the sideline and he's like,
- 1:21:12Speaker 7: I have no idea what they're.
- 1:21:13Speaker 6: Doing, it separated Brady.
- 1:21:15Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:21:15Speaker 6: Like Bill used to ask Brady what the coverage was,
- 1:21:17Speaker 6: what he saw, and then they would watch the film
- 1:21:20Speaker 6: and more often than not, Brady had it exactly right,
- 1:21:25Speaker 6: Like right away, and that was one of the things
- 1:21:27Speaker 6: that really impressed Belichick about Brady. Absolutely, and stripsacks are
- 1:21:33Speaker 6: partly on the quarterback. To say it's one hundred percent
- 1:21:35Speaker 6: on the quarterback unless it's like one of these with
- 1:21:38Speaker 6: the guys running like this with the ball and just
- 1:21:40Speaker 6: knocks it out. If you're in the act of throwing
- 1:21:43Speaker 6: and you get blindsided and the ball gets hit and
- 1:21:45Speaker 6: comes out. Now, partly that's on the quarterback because you
- 1:21:48Speaker 6: have to be more aware of the pocket. But to
- 1:21:50Speaker 6: put it one hundred percent on the passer when you're
- 1:21:53Speaker 6: getting hit as you throw is not that's not fair.
- 1:21:55Speaker 7: I'd say fifty to fifty.
- 1:21:57Speaker 8: I thought that was one of those double clutch situations
- 1:22:02Speaker 8: that we saw in training camp where he had the
- 1:22:04Speaker 8: hitch on the outside to booty for as like a
- 1:22:06Speaker 8: quick throw to get the ball out quickly, any kind
- 1:22:09Speaker 8: of double clutched it.
- 1:22:11Speaker 6: I remember that now, yeah, the training camp, double yeah,
- 1:22:14Speaker 6: I remember.
- 1:22:14Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:22:15Speaker 8: He just wasn't one hundred and double clutched a little
- 1:22:18Speaker 8: bit in that extra split second. Is that, you know,
- 1:22:21Speaker 8: obviously ends up being the difference on the strip sack.
- 1:22:23Speaker 8: The tipped on interception is unlucky.
- 1:22:25Speaker 7: I don't put that on it.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: It's unlucky that it's intercepted. It can't get tipped like Fred.
- 1:22:30Speaker 7: Well, the cup blocks got to be better correct.
- 1:22:32Speaker 6: Yeah, that was total system breakdown. But it turns out
- 1:22:35Speaker 6: to be a turnover for an unbelievable play by their guy. Yeah,
- 1:22:39Speaker 6: like that's a great catch around the back of player
- 1:22:42Speaker 6: and I.
- 1:22:42Speaker 8: Just thought it was the cup block wasn't there? It
- 1:22:46Speaker 8: gets tipped up. I can't tell you how many times
- 1:22:48Speaker 8: I've seen that, like just but.
- 1:22:50Speaker 4: I blame the quarterback on those. You got to look
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: for your passing lanes. You got to be aware that
- 1:22:58Speaker 4: there's a guy coming at you and you just can't
- 1:23:00Speaker 4: row it through him, you know, I don't.
- 1:23:02Speaker 6: Know, it's tough, tough. The fact that it's a turnover
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: is not on May. But that was just an unbelievable play.
- 1:23:09Speaker 4: But was it recently? I don't know if it was
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: zappy or like in an order ordinate amount of tip
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: balls at the line and that the quarterback has to
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: take responsibility for those. I don't know if it was
- 1:23:22Speaker 4: Mac Jones.
- 1:23:22Speaker 6: This wasn't necessarily a tip at the line, though I.
- 1:23:25Speaker 8: Would I would agree if it was like a traditional
- 1:23:27Speaker 8: drop back and he got it batted down at the
- 1:23:29Speaker 8: line of scrimmage. But the left tackle is supposed to
- 1:23:32Speaker 8: execute that cup block and it's a screen out to
- 1:23:34Speaker 8: the perimeter, so he's just catching and throwing in that situation.
- 1:23:38Speaker 8: So if you could execute the cup block, then Will
- 1:23:40Speaker 8: Anderson's on the ground instead of in the passing land.
- 1:23:43Speaker 6: And sometimes it's just the other guy makes a really
- 1:23:45Speaker 6: good play. I think Will Anderson made a really good
- 1:23:47Speaker 6: play on that.
- 1:23:47Speaker 4: Okay, And there was one earlier, so none of them
- 1:23:50Speaker 4: were May's fault.
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: I wanted to and.
- 1:23:53Speaker 6: Again, but I didn't. I'm not a completely absolving May
- 1:23:56Speaker 6: on that play. I just would say the fact that
- 1:23:57Speaker 6: it turns out to be a turnover isn't necessarily Yeah,
- 1:24:01Speaker 6: but I would say sometimes, like Evan's point, when you
- 1:24:04Speaker 6: make those quick screens like the the job is supposed
- 1:24:08Speaker 6: to be catch the snap and throw it. You're not
- 1:24:10Speaker 6: reading anything right. The job is to get the ball
- 1:24:13Speaker 6: into the intended receiver's hands as quickly as possible. Daniel
- 1:24:16Speaker 6: Jones threw one of those in the very first week
- 1:24:18Speaker 6: of the season. Yes, Mike, I'm going to do this,
- 1:24:20Speaker 6: and who picked it off, Andrew Van Ginkle. Yeah, Okay,
- 1:24:25Speaker 6: sometimes you have to credit the other team's player for
- 1:24:28Speaker 6: making an incredible play, and everybody looks at that because
- 1:24:31Speaker 6: it was Daniel Jones, who stinks. Oh he stinks, you
- 1:24:35Speaker 6: know it's it's did you see the pick that Andrew
- 1:24:37Speaker 6: Jones that Daniel Jones threw? Like no, this was like,
- 1:24:41Speaker 6: you're supposed to just catch it and throw it. It's
- 1:24:44Speaker 6: the the blocker's job to make sure that Will Anderson's
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: not in the passing lane.
- 1:24:48Speaker 5: Zach Thomas was probably.
- 1:24:51Speaker 8: Yeah, it was Zach Thomas, who look, I don't hold
- 1:24:54Speaker 8: it against Zach Thomas. He's like the fifth string left tackle.
- 1:24:58Speaker 8: It's thrown into the middle of the game.
- 1:24:59Speaker 7: But but they did.
- 1:25:01Speaker 6: They could just get like little continuity, Evan, I heard
- 1:25:05Speaker 6: this before.
- 1:25:06Speaker 7: So they did for what it's worked.
- 1:25:08Speaker 8: They did allow a season low thirty three percent pressure
- 1:25:10Speaker 8: rate in this game. That's what I had them at
- 1:25:12Speaker 8: season low. I not to do my own hoard, but
- 1:25:17Speaker 8: when you have a quarterback that can make some plays
- 1:25:19Speaker 8: back there, all of a sudden, the pressure doesn't look
- 1:25:21Speaker 8: like I think it's more.
- 1:25:22Speaker 6: About your other thing. You talked about the way Houston
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: played them.
- 1:25:25Speaker 8: But Houston brought some pressure in this game and they
- 1:25:29Speaker 8: did a decent job, like they didn't allow any free
- 1:25:31Speaker 8: runners for the A and B gaps like we've seen
- 1:25:33Speaker 8: in the past that they were inside out pretty much
- 1:25:36Speaker 8: the entire game. They got beat one on one by
- 1:25:39Speaker 8: Anderson and Hunter, two good players, you know, So they
- 1:25:42Speaker 8: got beatn.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: Well, it's the Jaguars. I guess they have one good
- 1:25:46Speaker 4: edge rusher on the team. But do you think we'll
- 1:25:49Speaker 4: see noticeable improvement on the offensive line this week?
- 1:25:52Speaker 5: No, I don't know who's going to be playing.
- 1:25:55Speaker 6: I don't know how you can anticipate that until you
- 1:25:57Speaker 6: see it.
- 1:25:59Speaker 8: They are thirtieth in the league and pressure right like
- 1:26:01Speaker 8: they're not. They don't pressure the quarterback very much.
- 1:26:03Speaker 6: So those two guys on the end are the only
- 1:26:04Speaker 6: two and they don't have a lot of sad Yeah.
- 1:26:06Speaker 8: And they don't blitz very much, sure and Josh, So
- 1:26:08Speaker 8: it's a good matchup in that case.
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: Personally, I don't care about mistake free, clean decision making
- 1:26:16Speaker 4: this year. I just want to see as many examples
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: of Drake May's ceiling as we can. I don't care
- 1:26:22Speaker 4: how safe he can play. If he can't make plays,
- 1:26:25Speaker 4: all playing smart will do is delay finding out if
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: he translates to the NFL. I agree he was.
- 1:26:32Speaker 7: I don't he let it rip out there, that's for sure.
- 1:26:34Speaker 8: Like that was not like a kid gloves, you know,
- 1:26:38Speaker 8: training wheels performance where he's not throwing the ball into
- 1:26:41Speaker 8: tight windows or down the field or anything like that.
- 1:26:43Speaker 19: You know, he was.
- 1:26:44Speaker 7: He was playing.
- 1:26:45Speaker 14: No.
- 1:26:45Speaker 6: I totally agree with that, But I don't want him
- 1:26:47Speaker 6: just going recklessly trying to see how many plays he can.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: Make the word reckless of course not.
- 1:26:52Speaker 6: Well, he's just saying let it rip, let you know,
- 1:26:53Speaker 6: make let him make all the plays. I don't care
- 1:26:55Speaker 6: about playing it safe. No, there's times that's part of
- 1:26:57Speaker 6: playing a position. That's what you need to know about that.
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: I don't want to have a conservative game plan where
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: it's oh no, I like that, But that's not the
- 1:27:04Speaker 4: same thing. Well that's what I think he's talking about.
- 1:27:06Speaker 6: Okay, maybe maybe you're right.
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Yeah, uh spiing Fresno.
- 1:27:09Speaker 6: I won't boll it down with a Fred Paul argument.
- 1:27:12Speaker 4: Those those first two scoring drives with Diggs and Dell
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: were like a litmus test showing the talent deficit. If
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: the season was over today, whose seat is hottest, Wolf
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: Van Pelt or Covington to me, it's Wolf injuries, et cetera.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: Side the roster is unacceptable. Yeah, but he had like
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: one off season.
- 1:27:32Speaker 6: If he if can we operate under the premise that
- 1:27:35Speaker 6: probably none of those people is really dealing with a
- 1:27:39Speaker 6: hot seat.
- 1:27:39Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't understand all that question.
- 1:27:41Speaker 4: I don't think they are.
- 1:27:42Speaker 6: If you, if you were gonna if you're going to
- 1:27:44Speaker 6: say that, I would say in order, Wolf, Covington, Van Pelt,
- 1:27:49Speaker 6: like in terms of who's who would be in trouble first,
- 1:27:52Speaker 6: like the roster, the defense to me is far more
- 1:27:55Speaker 6: disappointing than the offense. That's how I would rank him.
- 1:27:58Speaker 6: I don't think any of those three deserve to or
- 1:28:01Speaker 6: is on the hot seat.
- 1:28:02Speaker 8: Yeah, I'm right in the mail bag this week and
- 1:28:04Speaker 8: I was getting the questions ready today. There's so many
- 1:28:07Speaker 8: questions about those those guys being on hot seats, and
- 1:28:09Speaker 8: I'm like, guys, it's it's year one, like it's really.
- 1:28:13Speaker 6: The six like and for them it's year one of
- 1:28:15Speaker 6: a rebuild.
- 1:28:16Speaker 21: Though.
- 1:28:16Speaker 8: Yeah, you're gonna blame Elliott Wolf because he didn't plug
- 1:28:19Speaker 8: every single hole on a roster that was decimated when
- 1:28:22Speaker 8: he took it over. Like, let's not forget that they
- 1:28:25Speaker 8: won four games last year and we're the third overall
- 1:28:27Speaker 8: pick in the league. Like you can't can't fill everything
- 1:28:31Speaker 8: in one offseason.
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I mean, the one criticism I think
- 1:28:35Speaker 4: is fair is just not identifying someone decent at tackle.
- 1:28:40Speaker 4: Agreed the person he identified was not good.
- 1:28:43Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, I think that's absolutely worthy of a second guest.
- 1:28:49Speaker 6: Like they didn't do anything really to adjust the offensive.
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: Anything, like there was always so much he could do overall,
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: you know, and you know, re signing the guys they had,
- 1:28:57Speaker 4: you know, it wasn't a bad decision because you need
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: some stabildy you know, you can't and you didn't want
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: a whole bunch of guys on the team going in
- 1:29:04Speaker 4: disgruntled or whatever. You know, you had the money. It's
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: not like it hurt them to do anything else. They
- 1:29:10Speaker 4: were willing to spend on Ayuk. He just didn't want
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: to come here, period, Like they were going to give
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: him more money than anyone. He just didn't want to
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: come here. You probably dodged a bullet with.
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: Ridley.
- 1:29:24Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, again they were based on the way
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: Drake maylook the other day. I wouldn't seeing, you know.
- 1:29:29Speaker 4: But again, they were willing to spend that happy, not
- 1:29:32Speaker 4: like they didn't want to spend money.
- 1:29:33Speaker 5: It's also tough blows with a core forum Leverett who
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: got cut. We haven't talked about that either. You know
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: two other well was the guy that they offensive Lineman that.
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: I don't think that a corps for is a tough break.
- 1:29:47Speaker 4: No it's not.
- 1:29:47Speaker 5: I'm not saying no, I'm not that wasn't saying. I'm saying,
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: those are those are bad moves. Those are yeah, yeah,
- 1:29:53Speaker 5: those are Those are guys that I'm with you now,
- 1:29:55Speaker 5: veterans that you were kind of hoping could solidify things
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: and allow your rookies to develop and provide some depth.
- 1:30:00Speaker 5: One guy just left and the other guy just got caught.
- 1:30:02Speaker 5: We don't even really know why when they have i
- 1:30:05Speaker 5: mean necessitating them having to put in a center that
- 1:30:07Speaker 5: you know it.
- 1:30:08Speaker 6: Never They spent the whole summer lamenting the fact that
- 1:30:10Speaker 6: David Andrews was so important because they didn't feel good
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: about the depth at center. And then they had the
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: one guy that got the most work is gone after
- 1:30:18Speaker 6: a week of playing, and.
- 1:30:20Speaker 8: He played a week and everyone's a saying like he's
- 1:30:22Speaker 8: got like he gave up. You know, all these pressures
- 1:30:24Speaker 8: against Miami and he had a bad game.
- 1:30:26Speaker 6: Why he's gone. Something happened, And and you know.
- 1:30:30Speaker 4: If the team was supposed to be a contending team,
- 1:30:32Speaker 4: I could see why you're getting rid of Judon. But
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: they weren't.
- 1:30:35Speaker 6: They knew that.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: I mean, they're realistic.
- 1:30:37Speaker 6: They have no problem with that.
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: You know, you got a third round pick. The guy
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: wasn't gonna be happy. You're not going to pay him.
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: He's thirty two or whatever. You know, like it was
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: probably a good move for a team that wasn't going to.
- 1:30:49Speaker 5: I love it right now because, yeah, no difference. I
- 1:30:54Speaker 5: mean I don't think he would make a single bit
- 1:30:55Speaker 5: of I don't.
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: Think the offseason was the disaster for Elliott Wolf.
- 1:30:59Speaker 6: That's some people think, oh yeah, I'm a little different
- 1:31:02Speaker 6: on that. But the Judaon move might have been his
- 1:31:04Speaker 6: best move. Yeah.
- 1:31:05Speaker 8: I just look at tackle and the second guesses to me,
- 1:31:09Speaker 8: there are could you have taken a flyer on like
- 1:31:13Speaker 8: McKai Becton. It's like the name that I that comes
- 1:31:16Speaker 8: to the top of mind for me, Tyron Smith, because yeah,
- 1:31:18Speaker 8: Tyrone Smith I don't think was necessarily coming here. But
- 1:31:21Speaker 8: like McKai Beckton is a former first rounder, has a
- 1:31:23Speaker 8: pedigree all the trades, so like you can still sign
- 1:31:27Speaker 8: chookes the corps for as like the veteran, But like
- 1:31:30Speaker 8: what if you have McKai Becton in here in training camp,
- 1:31:33Speaker 8: Like maybe he was the eleventh overall pick in the
- 1:31:35Speaker 8: draft a couple of years ago for a reason, like
- 1:31:37Speaker 8: maybe you get something out of him. And then obviously
- 1:31:40Speaker 8: they they missed a tackle run on Day two, so
- 1:31:43Speaker 8: none of those guys are playing lights out and their
- 1:31:46Speaker 8: their teams. You know that were drafted ahead of Caden Wallace.
- 1:31:49Speaker 8: But there were four tackles drafted ahead of Caden Wallace
- 1:31:52Speaker 8: and you took the fifth tackle, you know, so that
- 1:31:55Speaker 8: that's a fair second guest as well.
- 1:31:56Speaker 6: Yeah, I just thought there were avenues that they could
- 1:31:58Speaker 6: have tried, and and I've heard that the Tyron Smith
- 1:32:01Speaker 6: won a lot, like he wouldn't have come here, like
- 1:32:03Speaker 6: at least with Ayuk. I have some reporting that indicates
- 1:32:07Speaker 6: they offered him X and that was more than anybody else,
- 1:32:10Speaker 6: and he didn't want to even talk to them, right,
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: I haven't really Like everybody just says Tyron Smith wouldn't
- 1:32:16Speaker 6: come here. Did they ask him?
- 1:32:18Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:32:20Speaker 6: Did they talk to him because I never saw any
- 1:32:21Speaker 6: reports that they even looked into it.
- 1:32:23Speaker 7: Jonah Williams too, I haven't heard that there.
- 1:32:25Speaker 6: John Williams either. I don't know if you know this,
- 1:32:26Speaker 6: but he got hurt in Arizona, which means that that
- 1:32:29Speaker 6: was a good move that you that you didn't sign them,
- 1:32:31Speaker 6: which I have no idea why those two things.
- 1:32:33Speaker 4: Corarel people do that though he would have got hurt
- 1:32:35Speaker 4: here too, How do I know now?
- 1:32:37Speaker 6: Listen, based on the way this year is gone for
- 1:32:39Speaker 6: the offensive line, yeah, he probably would have. Everybody else
- 1:32:42Speaker 6: is getting hurt. But like, there were avenues to take
- 1:32:46Speaker 6: and they chose not to take any of them. They
- 1:32:48Speaker 6: could have tried to get up into the end of
- 1:32:49Speaker 6: the first round for a tacking they didn't do it.
- 1:32:52Speaker 6: Evan just talked about the run on tackles that went
- 1:32:55Speaker 6: between when they picked in the second round in Wallace,
- 1:32:58Speaker 6: they didn't do any of those guys. I mean, Washington
- 1:33:01Speaker 6: picked up a guy that was kind of just there
- 1:33:03Speaker 6: and they but he played left tackle in college. I
- 1:33:07Speaker 6: don't know if he's any good, but they're doing alrighty yeah, yeah,
- 1:33:11Speaker 6: because at least he played left tackle. Now, maybe I
- 1:33:15Speaker 6: just don't understand why they decided we're not going to
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: address it at all. We're good with what we got.
- 1:33:21Speaker 5: We're just gonna assume that one of these right tackles
- 1:33:23Speaker 5: is can be able to do well.
- 1:33:24Speaker 8: That's why I threw Becton out there, because like, at
- 1:33:26Speaker 8: least that's a guy with some pedigree, with some talent
- 1:33:29Speaker 8: that's played on the left side. And you know, I
- 1:33:31Speaker 8: look at Tyron Smith. I don't have no one has
- 1:33:35Speaker 8: had any reporting on that. You're right, But I still feel.
- 1:33:37Speaker 6: Maybe I'm not telling you that that's I'm not telling
- 1:33:39Speaker 6: you that that's wrong.
- 1:33:40Speaker 8: I think if they had guaranteed him eighteen million dollars right,
- 1:33:43Speaker 8: and I'm sure he would have came here, but for.
- 1:33:45Speaker 6: A year, I would have like, with all that cap
- 1:33:47Speaker 6: space that they have still like that wouldn't have been
- 1:33:50Speaker 6: a terrible thing to do.
- 1:33:51Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, Tyron Smith, Jonah Williams, and Germaine Iluminor
- 1:33:56Speaker 8: are like the three veteran tackles that are you know,
- 1:33:59Speaker 8: Williams is her, but those two other guys are playing
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: for their new teams.
- 1:34:03Speaker 7: But our ILLUMINOI is really a right tackle slash guard.
- 1:34:05Speaker 7: He's kind of like an o Winnu.
- 1:34:06Speaker 8: You can play guard can play right tackle. He's not
- 1:34:08Speaker 8: a pure left tackle either. But it wasn't a great
- 1:34:12Speaker 8: class in free agency, so you had to attack it
- 1:34:15Speaker 8: in the draft, and they just kind of waited like
- 1:34:17Speaker 8: they didn't They didn't go out there and really address
- 1:34:19Speaker 8: it in no offense, but hindsight, like Jalen Polk hasn't
- 1:34:22Speaker 8: been all that great. So now you know, you look
- 1:34:25Speaker 8: at that pick too and you say, well, should they
- 1:34:26Speaker 8: have gone tackled end receiver?
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: You know?
- 1:34:28Speaker 7: So it's just that was the big second guest.
- 1:34:31Speaker 4: Let's see who's this.
- 1:34:34Speaker 6: Email one?
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: Who are you Richard?
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: Right?
- 1:34:37Speaker 4: Sin Fans have been complaining about play calling for the
- 1:34:40Speaker 4: past five years, even when McDaniel's was here. In hindsight,
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: McDaniel's play calling was far better than what we have
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: had in the last few years. Looking around the league,
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: there are plenty of coaches who aren't good at both
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: play calling and scheming, but are good at one or
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: the other. At the end of the season, if AVP
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: turns out to not be good at play calling, think
- 1:35:00Speaker 4: the organization would consider finding someone else to help him.
- 1:35:03Speaker 4: I don't think we need a new OC since switching
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: systems during May's development will be bad On a similar note,
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: on the defensive side of the play calling and scheming
- 1:35:13Speaker 4: used to be split responsibilities between Mayo and Steve. Is
- 1:35:16Speaker 4: this both being handled by Covington. If so, would splitting
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: the roll up be beneficial to the Patriots defensive performance?
- 1:35:23Speaker 8: Well, defensively, Steve was the play caller. Yeah, there was
- 1:35:26Speaker 8: no they split in terms of during the week, they
- 1:35:28Speaker 8: kind of each took on responsibilities of a defensive coordinator,
- 1:35:32Speaker 8: but there was only one guy calling plays on Sundays,
- 1:35:34Speaker 8: and it was Steve.
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: I think that was the weird way to do it.
- 1:35:37Speaker 5: I like it better. There's a defensive coordinator. He's the
- 1:35:39Speaker 5: one presenting the plan. He's the one calling the plays.
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:35:42Speaker 5: I think it worked pretty well with the way they
- 1:35:44Speaker 5: did it before, but it was unconventional and I think
- 1:35:46Speaker 5: hard to reproduce, especially when you don't have Bill, you know,
- 1:35:49Speaker 5: Bill Belichick overseeing the whole operation. And really it's him,
- 1:35:53Speaker 5: you know, he's the one who's not necessarily calling the defense,
- 1:35:56Speaker 5: but he's the one talking to his son all week
- 1:35:59Speaker 5: telling him, you know, in this situation, do this right.
- 1:36:01Speaker 5: They develop a shorthand. But I you know, I think
- 1:36:05Speaker 5: a little bit of heat on DeMarcus Covington for sure.
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: I mean, I think Evan laid it out well.
- 1:36:08Speaker 6: Of so, I'll give you all.
- 1:36:10Speaker 8: So last year they were number one in the league
- 1:36:13Speaker 8: and generating unblocked pressures or free runners to the quarterback.
- 1:36:17Speaker 8: This year they're twenty sixth in the league. They went
- 1:36:20Speaker 8: from first to basically last in that statistic. I mean,
- 1:36:23Speaker 8: that's losing the Belichicks. To me, spin right, being able
- 1:36:26Speaker 8: to spin the dial, being able to attack you know,
- 1:36:29Speaker 8: pass protection rules and all that kind of stuff. They
- 1:36:32Speaker 8: just haven't been able to do that. I'm as concerned
- 1:36:34Speaker 8: about the play calling as everybody else on offense, because
- 1:36:37Speaker 8: all I care about is how they developed Drake. Like
- 1:36:40Speaker 8: if he doesn't go out there and he's not one
- 1:36:43Speaker 8: of these tight pants guys that has these awesome play
- 1:36:45Speaker 8: calls every single week, but Drake made his fundamentals and
- 1:36:48Speaker 8: footwork and decision making and all that continue to be
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: on an upward trajectory, then to me, AVP is doing
- 1:36:54Speaker 8: his job.
- 1:36:55Speaker 6: I think there's probably fan bases in thirty two cities
- 1:36:57Speaker 6: that don't like the way the game's the play that
- 1:36:59Speaker 6: the plays are called. And I'm not telling you it.
- 1:37:01Speaker 6: They're all the same because they're not. Some guys are
- 1:37:03Speaker 6: obviously better at it. But I think when you look
- 1:37:05Speaker 6: at schemes in different offenses, there are some that are
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: more imaginative and creative and whatnot than others. You know,
- 1:37:11Speaker 6: Evans boy Shanahan is probably at the top of that list.
- 1:37:14Speaker 6: But there's always times where you're like, ah, he can
- 1:37:18Speaker 6: run in this second. I was what Houston put forty
- 1:37:21Speaker 6: one points on the board. I sat there At times
- 1:37:23Speaker 6: I was like, they're like begging the Patriots to stop
- 1:37:26Speaker 6: them with some of these calls that are setting up
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: third downs with like run run early. You know, like,
- 1:37:33Speaker 6: I think that if you looked at it, you're probably
- 1:37:36Speaker 6: gonna have a question with play calls in every game
- 1:37:39Speaker 6: with every guy.
- 1:37:41Speaker 4: John wants to stick up for Poke, says me. Personally,
- 1:37:44Speaker 4: I'm happy JP is going through this, had his worst
- 1:37:47Speaker 4: game this Sunday, but now it's all about how you respond.
- 1:37:50Speaker 4: I felt the same when everyone was going in on
- 1:37:53Speaker 4: Remondrae about his fumbling issues, and I had faith he'd
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: respond well to the adversity, which I think Polk has
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: the kind of character that he can bounce back. Also
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: to Paul about what Poke said to the fans, slash
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: media about staying on that side. It's called having confidence
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: in himself and his teammates, regardless of the bad stretch
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: he's had.
- 1:38:14Speaker 6: You have to just have that camp.
- 1:38:17Speaker 4: Yeah, you have to have you have to have that
- 1:38:20Speaker 4: swag if you're going to play wide receiver in the NFL.
- 1:38:23Speaker 4: Go cry about it on your other show.
- 1:38:25Speaker 6: Oh it's it's well, he's got it wrong. It's before
- 1:38:30Speaker 6: he ever even stepped on a field, he was telling
- 1:38:32Speaker 6: people he didn't want them to root for him. You're
- 1:38:34Speaker 6: not with us here again, Like I would just rather
- 1:38:37Speaker 6: like I feel like we always harp on like how
- 1:38:40Speaker 6: does he handle adversity?
- 1:38:42Speaker 8: And I get it because it's all there is gonna
- 1:38:43Speaker 8: be adversity. But it'd be cool to just like have
- 1:38:46Speaker 8: a receiver that's just good.
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: Like his adversity early good.
- 1:38:50Speaker 7: Yeah, Like his adversity is like oh man.
- 1:38:52Speaker 8: Like you know, he had one bad play like where
- 1:38:54Speaker 8: he dropped a third down, but he had one hundred
- 1:38:56Speaker 8: and fifty yards, Like, you know, I would like that.
- 1:38:58Speaker 6: Because of what I said, I'm not worried about the
- 1:39:00Speaker 6: drops unless it becomes a thing. I haven't seen him drop.
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: Wants that thoroughbred like even Edelman great receiver, Patriot's Hall
- 1:39:08Speaker 4: of Famer, but he's not what you would consider that thoroughbred.
- 1:39:12Speaker 6: No, he wasn't. No, you want thoroughbred to make him great.
- 1:39:16Speaker 6: He had Gronk, yes, a Welker had Moss like that's yes.
- 1:39:22Speaker 6: I think that you need I mean that you need
- 1:39:24Speaker 6: them all to be great, to be what the Patriots
- 1:39:27Speaker 6: were a dynasty. You need them all. But it's hard.
- 1:39:32Speaker 6: It's hard to have the best one be sort of
- 1:39:35Speaker 6: limited in his skill set. That's what my concern is,
- 1:39:38Speaker 6: and I just want to state it again. I am
- 1:39:40Speaker 6: not giving up on Jalen Polk. I think that he
- 1:39:43Speaker 6: showed a lot of physical ability, toughness. I think he's
- 1:39:46Speaker 6: a good football player. He's fighting through whatever he's fighting
- 1:39:49Speaker 6: through right now. I am not giving up on him
- 1:39:51Speaker 6: the way I was just accused of my shows. I
- 1:39:55Speaker 6: have heard that on EI yesterday they were really Jones
- 1:39:58Speaker 6: and Keith in the midday Yard. I caught a lot
- 1:40:00Speaker 6: of they were like really worried about is this guy
- 1:40:03Speaker 6: because they both really liked Polk coming out of camp.
- 1:40:06Speaker 6: They were both really high on him, and now they're like,
- 1:40:09Speaker 6: you know, do we miss on this guy? Is this
- 1:40:11Speaker 6: the latest second round bus that I'm like, it's six games,
- 1:40:14Speaker 6: what are we doing.
- 1:40:15Speaker 5: I know I'm not there yet.
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: I just anywhere just not every game has been bad
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: for him.
- 1:40:19Speaker 5: No, well, I totally, it's just more curiosity, Like its
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: Evan laid out. It's just it's weird. Why, like the
- 1:40:25Speaker 5: things that you thought he'd be good at he's not
- 1:40:27Speaker 5: really doing. But he's doing the He is doing the
- 1:40:29Speaker 5: things you didn't know he could do, and it's just
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: a strange situation for me. I haven't given up on him.
- 1:40:33Speaker 8: But winning down the field on like vertical routes I
- 1:40:36Speaker 8: did not have run car like him running by people.
- 1:40:39Speaker 7: I did not think he was going to be able
- 1:40:40Speaker 7: to do. He's showing that he can do that. On tape.
- 1:40:42Speaker 7: He's is not catching the ball, which is what I
- 1:40:44Speaker 7: thought he could do.
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: So I am just all he's like, I'm open breaks out.
- 1:40:48Speaker 6: But I would also I would just say, like with
- 1:40:51Speaker 6: regard to the comments from training camp that we're saying,
- 1:40:54Speaker 6: well that's swag, Like I understand there's there's a level
- 1:40:57Speaker 6: of that at that at that position, the confidence for cornerbacks,
- 1:41:00Speaker 6: wide receivers that comes with it. I think coupling all
- 1:41:04Speaker 6: the I didn't get my panties in a bunch when
- 1:41:07Speaker 6: he said it during training camp. But I'm now using
- 1:41:10Speaker 6: that as part of a couple of other examples where
- 1:41:12Speaker 6: he's tweeting about how he was wronged by the officials
- 1:41:17Speaker 6: after the fact on consecutive games in San Francisco and
- 1:41:21Speaker 6: against Miami. And I would say I would put those
- 1:41:24Speaker 6: three things now in the same bucket and say, you're
- 1:41:26Speaker 6: concerned about things that aren't important, right, you put your
- 1:41:30Speaker 6: focus back on getting better and improving.
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: I hope there's somebody telling him that.
- 1:41:36Speaker 6: So that's my point about the comment, not I don't
- 1:41:39Speaker 6: want a guy showing swagger that comes with that position.
- 1:41:42Speaker 6: To davas wide receivers, you know that's the good ones.
- 1:41:45Speaker 6: Yes they're a lot like Mike hate Staf but he
- 1:41:49Speaker 6: would but he absolutely is you know, would have taken
- 1:41:52Speaker 6: him on his team, say five years ago when he's
- 1:41:55Speaker 6: catching one hundred and ten a year.
- 1:41:57Speaker 4: Jacket and writes in the twenty.
- 1:42:02Speaker 5: Because you you, when you went into that thing about Polk,
- 1:42:04Speaker 5: you were kind of saying, maybe this is one of
- 1:42:06Speaker 5: my crazy things. And as a Jalen Polk fan, like
- 1:42:08Speaker 5: I kind of hear what you're saying.
- 1:42:11Speaker 4: I don't.
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: I don't. I'm not dismissing that.
- 1:42:12Speaker 6: In and of itself, him saying, well, you know, it's
- 1:42:15Speaker 6: kind of cliche, like you know, I know, no, no,
- 1:42:17Speaker 6: not a lot of people believe in us, right, Hodney Harrison,
- 1:42:19Speaker 6: Like that's the in and of itself, that's fine. I'm
- 1:42:21Speaker 6: now I'm adding that to the bucket of gesturing to
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: the big screen when you're it was clearly out of
- 1:42:28Speaker 6: bounds and obviously you don't know the rules and you're
- 1:42:31Speaker 6: not even in the huddle getting the next play until
- 1:42:34Speaker 6: they all basically had to drag you back over that,
- 1:42:37Speaker 6: like worry about things that are going to help, not
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: not this.
- 1:42:41Speaker 8: I just didn't expect it to go this way for
- 1:42:43Speaker 8: him because the film like he's getting open, so I
- 1:42:46Speaker 8: was expecting it to go the other way. Like I
- 1:42:48Speaker 8: thought he was gonna have a breakout game here at
- 1:42:50Speaker 8: some point, especially once Drake May got in there and
- 1:42:53Speaker 8: then he just started getting that.
- 1:42:55Speaker 6: Could happen with you. I again, adamantly, I am not.
- 1:43:00Speaker 6: I'm not out on, but I just felt.
- 1:43:02Speaker 5: Like when it not out out Colon, I felt like
- 1:43:06Speaker 5: when it dragged into like the next day, I like,
- 1:43:07Speaker 5: this guy's trying to gaslate us. I'm like, it wasn't it. Like,
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: I'm like, am I wrong? Like was he actually about?
- 1:43:12Speaker 5: Like what is the rule? Like I started to question everything.
- 1:43:14Speaker 5: I wondered when it kept going and I was like.
- 1:43:16Speaker 6: Well, the one in San Francisco was even worse, like
- 1:43:19Speaker 6: at least the one in the back of the end zone,
- 1:43:21Speaker 6: like you can see he gets one foot down and
- 1:43:22Speaker 6: the toe is down touchdown before his foot comes down.
- 1:43:25Speaker 6: The one in San Francisco wasn't really even that close.
- 1:43:30Speaker 6: Still shots the next day, and I'm.
- 1:43:32Speaker 5: Like, I like them. They need him. Get going, Get
- 1:43:35Speaker 5: going kid, get going.
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: Jacket and arbor. In twenty twenty fourth draft, the Patriots
- 1:43:39Speaker 4: traded down in the second round with the Chargers. The
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: Chargers then selected Lad McConkie, and a few picks later,
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: the Patriots selected Poke. Did the Patriots make a mistake
- 1:43:49Speaker 4: by trading down and not selecting mccakee.
- 1:43:52Speaker 6: No, they made a mistake trading down not taking a tackle.
- 1:43:55Speaker 22: Yeah.
- 1:43:55Speaker 8: Yeah, if we're gonna second guess that, I would agree,
- 1:43:57Speaker 8: would I'd be about the tackle the whole lad my
- 1:44:00Speaker 8: conky thing, Like.
- 1:44:00Speaker 7: He's a really good route runner.
- 1:44:03Speaker 6: I just it's fine.
- 1:44:04Speaker 8: I don't know, they have a lot of Ladd mcconkey's.
- 1:44:08Speaker 8: I feel like, and they were trying to get something
- 1:44:10Speaker 8: a little bit different. Someone is a little bit more
- 1:44:12Speaker 8: physical that could win down the field, and not another
- 1:44:15Speaker 8: slot receiver.
- 1:44:16Speaker 7: They have like sixteen slot receivers, you know.
- 1:44:18Speaker 6: So I'm not and I would take Lad McConkey. I think,
- 1:44:21Speaker 6: you know, Fred Fred was high on him. I think
- 1:44:23Speaker 6: he's a good player, but I would rather have had
- 1:44:26Speaker 6: a tackle.
- 1:44:26Speaker 4: But that's why I've been on a conky.
- 1:44:28Speaker 5: I know from what was that? Were you just like
- 1:44:29Speaker 5: randomly watching football like three years ago? Mccaky, I'm like,
- 1:44:34Speaker 5: that's not a real person. How was anyone named Ladd mcconkeye.
- 1:44:36Speaker 6: It's the name, who's the who's the linebacker? Steel Chambers Steel.
- 1:44:40Speaker 8: He also has nineteen catches for two hundred and nineteen
- 1:44:42Speaker 8: yards through six games, So it's not exactly like he's
- 1:44:44Speaker 8: letting the world on.
- 1:44:45Speaker 6: Fire, but I think he hurts that with that qualify
- 1:44:48Speaker 6: as our leading receiver, right, it would no really, you know,
- 1:44:52Speaker 6: if we take out the second half on Sunday with
- 1:44:54Speaker 6: that qualifier, I.
- 1:44:55Speaker 7: Mean that's cheating if you take away his best half.
- 1:44:58Speaker 6: To He also played one less game right.
- 1:45:02Speaker 7: Oh yeah, you know it's five games.
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: How are you working? Bie weeks into this already created
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: for the.
- 1:45:07Speaker 6: League with regard to anything but picks. So we has
- 1:45:16Speaker 6: twenty more yards.
- 1:45:17Speaker 7: In one more game, twenty four.
- 1:45:20Speaker 6: So I would I would just like you know, Lad McConkey,
- 1:45:24Speaker 6: I think, like again, I think he's fine. Like, I
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: just think when we talked about this a lot heading
- 1:45:29Speaker 6: into the draft, we all agreed quarterback had to be won.
- 1:45:34Speaker 6: We all felt they needed a tackle and a wide
- 1:45:37Speaker 6: receiver and you had a better chance of getting a
- 1:45:39Speaker 6: wide receiver who can contribute in the third round than
- 1:45:41Speaker 6: a tackle who can contribute in the third round. And
- 1:45:44Speaker 6: that's not revision is history. We all said that at
- 1:45:46Speaker 6: the time.
- 1:45:47Speaker 8: I just say, it's like a philosophical thing for me
- 1:45:50Speaker 8: where I just really do strongly believe that you built
- 1:45:53Speaker 8: through the trenches like quarterbacks different. Like when you're at
- 1:45:55Speaker 8: the top of the draft and you have a guy's
- 1:45:57Speaker 8: talented as Drake May, you have to take the quarterback.
- 1:46:00Speaker 8: But from that point out, I just I believe in
- 1:46:03Speaker 8: that offensive line, defensive line, like that's where the good
- 1:46:06Speaker 8: teams now in the league are winning. Like you look
- 1:46:09Speaker 8: across the league, out who are the best teams in
- 1:46:11Speaker 8: the NFL. They're all the best teams up front. Like,
- 1:46:14Speaker 8: it's no none of these teams that the Miami's of
- 1:46:16Speaker 8: the world or whatever that are these finesse you know,
- 1:46:19Speaker 8: teams that are built around receivers and things like that.
- 1:46:21Speaker 4: The game is.
- 1:46:23Speaker 8: It's Detroit, it's San Francisco, It's Kansas City, it's Baltimore.
- 1:46:27Speaker 6: I don't think San Francisco is very good upfront. I
- 1:46:29Speaker 6: think they have an exceptional left tackle and that's it.
- 1:46:32Speaker 8: Well, their offensive line might not be what it used
- 1:46:34Speaker 8: to be, but like their defensive line is still great
- 1:46:36Speaker 8: and they have a great scheme of how they block things.
- 1:46:38Speaker 6: Yeah, And I would just say, like if to Evan's point,
- 1:46:41Speaker 6: like if they just had some veteran guy, like I'm
- 1:46:47Speaker 6: gonna say Trent Brown because he was here last year.
- 1:46:50Speaker 6: I don't want Trent Brown. You guys know what I
- 1:46:52Speaker 6: think of Trent Brown. But if they had some some
- 1:46:54Speaker 6: Trent Brown like that, you could just say, Okay, so
- 1:46:58Speaker 6: if we don't get a tackle in the draft, we
- 1:47:01Speaker 6: can always plug in this guy who's in year seven,
- 1:47:03Speaker 6: year eight. He'll be serviceable. They had literally no person
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: on the roster who ever played the position. Yeah, Like
- 1:47:14Speaker 6: that to me is neglect, Like you can't possibly expect
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: it to be much better than it's been through the
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: six games when you literally didn't have anybody who ever
- 1:47:25Speaker 6: played the position before, right, Like.
- 1:47:27Speaker 8: Is chookxacorp for to Vederian Lowe to like they're all
- 1:47:30Speaker 8: the same, they've never played. Yeah, they're all at the
- 1:47:32Speaker 8: same kind of level. I mean, if Darien low has
- 1:47:34Speaker 8: been the best one that they have, he just can't
- 1:47:36Speaker 8: stay healthy.
- 1:47:37Speaker 6: Like it didn't need to be Trent Williams to use
- 1:47:39Speaker 6: Evan's example of San Francisco, who's a Hall of Famer,
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: it didn't need to be that, but you had nobody.
- 1:47:46Speaker 4: Christian wrights it. In my opinion, Evan is way too
- 1:47:49Speaker 4: pants off for Drake May to give a proper review
- 1:47:52Speaker 4: of film. It's like Evan, it's like a dad playing
- 1:47:54Speaker 4: nepotism with his son on the football team. A good
- 1:47:57Speaker 4: in between of Greg and Evan would be ida deal.
- 1:48:00Speaker 4: Bring Eric back, says he doesn't care either way.
- 1:48:03Speaker 8: I'm assuming this is Christian in North Carolina who told
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: me that Drake May was going to be a bust
- 1:48:08Speaker 8: and was terrible.
- 1:48:09Speaker 21: But just like.
- 1:48:13Speaker 6: But Greg and Evans saw the same thing with regard
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: to the positive place. I mean, I think twelve.
- 1:48:19Speaker 7: Yeah, I'm assuming, and I'm just assuming. Greg.
- 1:48:23Speaker 8: I'm sorry, but Drake may scrambled for a fourth down
- 1:48:26Speaker 8: late in the game. I counted that as a plus.
- 1:48:29Speaker 8: He doesn't like when he runs, so my guess is
- 1:48:31Speaker 8: that that didn't count as a plus in his grading.
- 1:48:34Speaker 8: I'm just teasing, but he's a harder, greater than me.
- 1:48:38Speaker 8: Uh shocker.
- 1:48:40Speaker 7: But that's just did you guys hear Kurt Warner?
- 1:48:44Speaker 6: I did not, Yes, I guess.
- 1:48:46Speaker 4: Bellingham says that Kurt Warner was complimentary of Drake's for
- 1:48:50Speaker 4: a start, but called out the play calling and played
- 1:48:52Speaker 4: design as bad. What's your opinion.
- 1:48:55Speaker 7: Yeah, we've talked about this a lot.
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: I would defer to Kurt Warner since I don't.
- 1:48:59Speaker 5: Yeah, I just I mean, my question for Kurt Warner,
- 1:49:01Speaker 5: and I'm not pushing back, I just what is he
- 1:49:03Speaker 5: expecting with a rookie? First? I mean, is he just
- 1:49:05Speaker 5: saying overall the scheme continues to be problem and I
- 1:49:08Speaker 5: think there's spacing problems with the receivers that you pointed
- 1:49:10Speaker 5: out to. But you know, I don't know. I just
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: expect with a rookie quarterback that you're gonna kind of
- 1:49:15Speaker 5: simplify things a little bit for him in his first start.
- 1:49:17Speaker 5: But maybe I'm maybe I'm.
- 1:49:19Speaker 8: I would just say that, like I I hear what
- 1:49:20Speaker 8: you're saying. But this has been their offense, even with
- 1:49:23Speaker 8: Brissette all season. They are not a very exotic passing game.
- 1:49:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:49:29Speaker 8: They don't motion a whole lot, they don't bunch or
- 1:49:33Speaker 8: stack a whole lot. They don't have a lot of
- 1:49:36Speaker 8: layered concepts where it's like three different levels of a
- 1:49:39Speaker 8: defense and you're kind of reading off defenders. They run
- 1:49:43Speaker 8: a ton of spread. They spread the field. They have
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: everybody on an island and it's one on one across
- 1:49:49Speaker 8: the board and go somebody, go winter route and get
- 1:49:52Speaker 8: the ball to that guy. And Kurt's point was just
- 1:49:55Speaker 8: that when you have the greatest show on turf and
- 1:49:57Speaker 8: you have Tory Holt, and you have Isaac Bruce and
- 1:49:59Speaker 8: you have Marshall Fulk and you have all these playmakers,
- 1:50:02Speaker 8: that you can play like that. But when you have
- 1:50:04Speaker 8: the Patriots receivers, it's harder to play like that. But
- 1:50:07Speaker 8: I just think the one like pushback that I would
- 1:50:09Speaker 8: have on it is more the offensive line because like
- 1:50:12Speaker 8: those types of layered route concepts that take time. So
- 1:50:16Speaker 8: like if you I think what they're trying to do
- 1:50:17Speaker 8: is get the ball out of the quarterback hands, and.
- 1:50:19Speaker 6: I would just say play calling in play schemes are
- 1:50:22Speaker 6: not necessarily the same thing like design play design. I
- 1:50:26Speaker 6: have the architect well, I have seen some examples of
- 1:50:29Speaker 6: like the receivers don't the spacing doesn't look We've seen
- 1:50:33Speaker 6: that stuff like that.
- 1:50:34Speaker 4: Yep, Todd's and Gardner. I think it's up Todd.
- 1:50:37Speaker 6: I think it's Todd North Carolina.
- 1:50:38Speaker 14: Right.
- 1:50:38Speaker 24: Hey, guys, I would just like to make a minor
- 1:50:40Speaker 24: request or Tuesdays to have two shows maybe another Catch
- 1:50:44Speaker 24: twenty two or something, just to kind of go back
- 1:50:47Speaker 24: to the old old school where we had, you know,
- 1:50:49Speaker 24: six shows a week.
- 1:50:50Speaker 16: I'd don't rate.
- 1:50:52Speaker 24: My question is what's just going on now with all
- 1:50:55Speaker 24: the people that were doubting, like they were calling for
- 1:50:57Speaker 24: a Wolf's job, they were calling for Azp's job.
- 1:51:00Speaker 25: They're called for that.
- 1:51:00Speaker 24: Are they just going to change this right away? Are
- 1:51:02Speaker 24: they still see that they're like there's still thinking there's
- 1:51:06Speaker 24: just nothing wrong with this or nothing going to go
- 1:51:08Speaker 24: positive for this team because a lot of.
- 1:51:10Speaker 4: The other Billbots, you know, the Billuminati. Yeah, it's hard
- 1:51:16Speaker 4: to say anyway.
- 1:51:18Speaker 8: I mean, I'm still not convinced that a VP is
- 1:51:20Speaker 8: like the offensive coordinator of the future. I've said it
- 1:51:25Speaker 8: multiple times. If he develops Drake may properly from a
- 1:51:29Speaker 8: just a Drake may standpoint, then he's cool with me.
- 1:51:31Speaker 8: But I think in a couple of years Drake may
- 1:51:34Speaker 8: will probably evolve past the offense that they're running right now.
- 1:51:37Speaker 7: And the question is, is Alex van Pelt the right guy.
- 1:51:40Speaker 4: To cants need to get tighter a hundred percent?
- 1:51:42Speaker 8: Like you know you go, I'll give you Greg Roman
- 1:51:46Speaker 8: in Baltimore is a great example. You know, they go
- 1:51:48Speaker 8: from Greg Roman to Todd Monkin because Todd Monkin was
- 1:51:52Speaker 8: a little bit more.
- 1:51:53Speaker 6: Uh you know modern, you know, had advanced past.
- 1:51:57Speaker 4: Yeah, as the question, I think the answer is yet,
- 1:52:00Speaker 4: but every one of these type pants guys, except maybe
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: for maybe McVeigh, did they all first have success in
- 1:52:06Speaker 4: college calling plays or scheming an offense.
- 1:52:10Speaker 7: No, at A lot of them came through the NFL.
- 1:52:13Speaker 6: Yeah, okay, but from that tree.
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: So it's not necessarily a good thing to say, Oh,
- 1:52:19Speaker 4: who is the hot coordinator in college Kingsbury.
- 1:52:23Speaker 7: Kingsbury was a college.
- 1:52:24Speaker 6: Kingsbury came from college.
- 1:52:26Speaker 7: Yeah, but a lot of those guys.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: In Shanahan went right to the NFL.
- 1:52:29Speaker 7: Yeah, I know, he worked for his dad.
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:52:32Speaker 8: I think the biggest thing with the college is that
- 1:52:34Speaker 8: it's just the spacing in the field and the hash
- 1:52:36Speaker 8: marks and all that stuff is way different.
- 1:52:37Speaker 6: And yeah Rogers redline.
- 1:52:39Speaker 8: Yeah, the illegal man downfield they don't call that in
- 1:52:42Speaker 8: college is closely as they do in the NFL.
- 1:52:45Speaker 7: It's a different rule. Actually, the NFL is two yards.
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: I didn't college.
- 1:52:49Speaker 8: It's deeper, so like r pos in college, like guys
- 1:52:51Speaker 8: are like five yards down the field.
- 1:52:53Speaker 7: Let it go. So it's a little different the college game.
- 1:52:56Speaker 8: But you know, is are we going to get to
- 1:52:59Speaker 8: the point where like Lamar he outgrows alexamand Pelt I
- 1:53:03Speaker 8: would say probably yes.
- 1:53:04Speaker 7: But as long as he develops them right now, then
- 1:53:07Speaker 7: it's cool.
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: Marks in Connecticut on the tpx houtline, what's up market?
- 1:53:11Speaker 25: They guys love the show as always. I just said
- 1:53:14Speaker 25: two quick things, why are you going run?
- 1:53:17Speaker 5: Run?
- 1:53:18Speaker 25: And then everybody knows you're going to pass And the
- 1:53:20Speaker 25: only runs that they're running is they're running gap right
- 1:53:23Speaker 25: up the gap. They're not doing any creative like wide zone,
- 1:53:27Speaker 25: you know, just nothing predictable. I would have rather have
- 1:53:30Speaker 25: seen them put Drake May right out of the gate
- 1:53:33Speaker 25: and shotgun or in the pistol or something, just to
- 1:53:36Speaker 25: get the kid comfortable. And then the other thing is
- 1:53:38Speaker 25: that I keep harping on it, Caleb Jones. We need
- 1:53:41Speaker 25: to get this big guy out there. This offensive line
- 1:53:43Speaker 25: is terrible as it is. I don't think that the
- 1:53:45Speaker 25: kid can be any more terrible than any of these
- 1:53:48Speaker 25: other tackles that are out there.
- 1:53:50Speaker 6: Why yeah, why don't you think?
- 1:53:54Speaker 25: Again, guys, you can't teach side in the guy's long,
- 1:53:57Speaker 25: long arms.
- 1:53:58Speaker 6: But if it was just a requirement to be big
- 1:54:00Speaker 6: to be good, then there'd be a lot more good
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: left tackles. Don't you think.
- 1:54:05Speaker 25: You don't think he's good though, I mean you guys.
- 1:54:06Speaker 6: I mean I'm gonna trust the coaches. They've tried like
- 1:54:10Speaker 6: five guys there, and he hasn't moved off the practice.
- 1:54:13Speaker 6: About Wallace, Caleb Jones.
- 1:54:15Speaker 5: I mean, maybe you'll see him get up.
- 1:54:17Speaker 6: He's sixty nine. He's a huge human, so everybody thinks
- 1:54:19Speaker 6: because he's six nine, he can play. If that was
- 1:54:21Speaker 6: the only requirement. I don't think you'd have a dearth
- 1:54:23Speaker 6: of left tackles in the league.
- 1:54:25Speaker 4: He wouldn't have been available.
- 1:54:26Speaker 25: Seemed to think that he was going to get elevated
- 1:54:28Speaker 25: a while.
- 1:54:29Speaker 6: Back, Okay, but he didn't. So I mean, is it
- 1:54:33Speaker 6: just the coaches being wrong? And as far as like run,
- 1:54:35Speaker 6: run pass, that's the first drive of the game. The
- 1:54:38Speaker 6: second drive of the game was pass on the first play,
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: and then shortly after that he ended up scrambling for
- 1:54:44Speaker 6: a first time, So like they didn't have the shackles only.
- 1:54:49Speaker 7: No, they ran outside zone on the second play of
- 1:54:50Speaker 7: the game.
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: But how has outside zone been doing for them in
- 1:54:53Speaker 6: general this year?
- 1:54:54Speaker 7: They've hit a couple of them.
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: Okay, I know Antonio Gibson hit one.
- 1:54:58Speaker 7: Andre hit one two up up the seam. The one
- 1:55:01Speaker 7: defend I would I would defense. I would give a AVP.
- 1:55:04Speaker 7: Who I guess I'm defending today?
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: Thanks, I am too. I didn't. I didn't places I
- 1:55:08Speaker 6: didn't expect to find myself that.
- 1:55:12Speaker 8: The big thing, the big you know, second guest from
- 1:55:14Speaker 8: the Jets game was that they came out play action,
- 1:55:17Speaker 8: play action, play action without setting up the run. So
- 1:55:20Speaker 8: they ran it twice and I think that they were
- 1:55:22Speaker 8: trying to set up that bootleg action to Kendrick Bourne
- 1:55:25Speaker 8: that they ended up hitting on the second drive. The
- 1:55:27Speaker 8: problem was is that they gained no yards on first
- 1:55:30Speaker 8: and second down when they ran the ball. So if
- 1:55:32Speaker 8: they get it, if they get some positive runs out
- 1:55:34Speaker 8: of the gate, and then they maybe they're in a
- 1:55:35Speaker 8: third and three instead of a third and ten, then
- 1:55:38Speaker 8: first down would have been the bootlegs.
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: I had no problem first two plays of the game
- 1:55:41Speaker 4: being run.
- 1:55:42Speaker 6: Well, thirty seven pass attempts to twenty one run attempts.
- 1:55:45Speaker 4: Ye, well they were behind.
- 1:55:47Speaker 6: No, I understand that, but like, yeah, you can't say
- 1:55:50Speaker 6: that they ran too much when it's almost two to one.
- 1:55:52Speaker 6: Pass the guy's first career start.
- 1:55:55Speaker 8: So they scripted the plays right, The first fifteen are scripted.
- 1:55:58Speaker 8: So the script was run, run third down, let's hope
- 1:56:02Speaker 8: we get third down, and then play action pass on
- 1:56:05Speaker 8: first down.
- 1:56:06Speaker 6: The first half was sixteen pass attempts to eight runs. Like,
- 1:56:11Speaker 6: I don't think they ran too much. They couldn't. Now
- 1:56:14Speaker 6: you want you want to like criticize because they couldn't
- 1:56:16Speaker 6: run at all. Yeah, like thirteen carries for nineteen yards.
- 1:56:19Speaker 6: Antonio Gibson Like, yeah, that's criticism, and if Mark is right,
- 1:56:24Speaker 6: it's it's all gap and whatever. Maybe they should have
- 1:56:27Speaker 6: tried something different.
- 1:56:28Speaker 7: I didn't like the second and ten run, like what
- 1:56:31Speaker 7: you run it on first and ten.
- 1:56:33Speaker 8: Second and ten runs are tough because now you're automatically
- 1:56:36Speaker 8: thinking you're in third and long, you know, unless you
- 1:56:38Speaker 8: really get well.
- 1:56:39Speaker 6: I think they're probably thinking in terms of we're gonna
- 1:56:41Speaker 6: get five or six here and set up third and manageable, right,
- 1:56:44Speaker 6: you know, that's the best case, Like the Texans did
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: on the drive before the Damian Pias fifty four yard
- 1:56:50Speaker 6: run screen off of Dalton Schultz's face mask, second and ten,
- 1:56:54Speaker 6: We're gonna run for five and set up third and five. Instead,
- 1:56:57Speaker 6: the Patriots ran on second and ten and set up third.
- 1:56:59Speaker 7: And I can't believe we're defending all All.
- 1:57:02Speaker 4: Right, that's gonna be it for this edition of Patriots Unfiltered.
