- 0:00Speaker 1: With Stu Gotts and Hawkman.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Always nice to jump on to a pod with my
- 0:05Speaker 2: friend Steve Gotts and another lot of with Stu Gotts
- 0:10Speaker 2: and Hawkman. Hello, Stu Gotts, how are you, buddy? Very
- 0:13Speaker 2: excited to talk to you again. So I think the
- 0:17Speaker 2: last episode we did was Roberto Durand and that was
- 0:20Speaker 2: quite enjoyable. And I promised everyone that we were going
- 0:23Speaker 2: to do Steven segaal all of Steven segall audio. I'm
- 0:27Speaker 2: going to push that back because that, to me is timeless.
- 0:30Speaker 2: And I spent this weekend I'm imagining you did as
- 0:33Speaker 2: well watching the Masters?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Were you watching the Masters every Uh? Listen, that's the
- 0:38Speaker 3: one thing on the sports calendar that you can you
- 0:42Speaker 3: can not in pencil in penn write me in to
- 0:45Speaker 3: be sitting down for four consecutive days and watch it.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yes, it's the greatest right there now. I only got
- 0:51Speaker 2: into the Masters when I turned like fifty. I honestly,
- 0:55Speaker 2: I was not into golf. My dad would watch me,
- 0:57Speaker 2: you know, my dad played every day, but watch golf
- 1:00Speaker 2: tournaments every weekend. And I didn't understand the fascination and
- 1:05Speaker 2: what And I became fascinated as I got older, with
- 1:10Speaker 2: like the intricacies of Augusta National and the traditions surrounding
- 1:15Speaker 2: the Masters, and I just there's so much going on there.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Have you ever been to the Masters?
- 1:22Speaker 3: I have been. I went there. I went there a
- 1:24Speaker 3: few years ago. I went there with my dad right
- 1:27Speaker 3: after my mom passed away. My dad and my brother
- 1:29Speaker 3: we had a great time, man, we really so my
- 1:31Speaker 3: dad and I went to the first round. My brother
- 1:33Speaker 3: joined us for the second round. I have to be
- 1:36Speaker 3: on the couch Saturday and Sunday. I was on the
- 1:38Speaker 3: couch Saturday and Sunday. But all those little things that
- 1:41Speaker 3: you're talking about, to see them, to see them on
- 1:44Speaker 3: my TV for as long as I've been seeing them,
- 1:47Speaker 3: and then to go to the actual Masters and walk
- 1:50Speaker 3: that course and have you know the you know, chicken salad, sandwich,
- 1:55Speaker 3: a couple of green beers, green lizards, JAMANDIC just shout
- 1:59Speaker 3: out right there. Hack. It was. It was everything you
- 2:02Speaker 3: could imagine. Then my dad made the big mistake of
- 2:04Speaker 3: giving me and my brother towards the end the MX
- 2:07Speaker 3: platinum to go into the merch store. I mean, how
- 2:09Speaker 3: about that.
- 2:12Speaker 2: They sell more merchandise in those four days, yes, than
- 2:16Speaker 2: the Atlanta Brave Cell just you know, miles away there
- 2:20Speaker 2: in Georgia. They sell more merchandise in those four days
- 2:24Speaker 2: than the Brave Cell all baseball season long.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Insane.
- 2:28Speaker 2: It's remarkable, it really is.
- 2:30Speaker 3: I am shocked to hear that you love golf, I
- 2:32Speaker 3: really am. I'm shocked.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Well, I don't love golf, per se. I love the Masters, okay,
- 2:38Speaker 2: Like you know, like I'll watch a golf tournament. My
- 2:41Speaker 2: son's into golf a lot. He golfs three times a week,
- 2:44Speaker 2: so like, and you know, I'm happy to go to
- 2:46Speaker 2: the driving range. But I love there's just this pomp
- 2:50Speaker 2: and circumstance around the Masters and the Penento cheese sandwich
- 2:54Speaker 2: and just like the there's just so much and Jim
- 2:57Speaker 2: nance like it just feels right when he gives it
- 3:00Speaker 2: Hello friends, it just feels right.
- 3:02Speaker 3: His voice feels right. It feels right for the moment,
- 3:05Speaker 3: for the occasion, for the venue. And I have to
- 3:07Speaker 3: tell you going there, Hawk, it is the best from
- 3:10Speaker 3: this standpoint. I know you know this, but you cannot
- 3:13Speaker 3: bring your cell phone. So if you are looking for
- 3:16Speaker 3: places where you have to actually interact with people, Augusta
- 3:20Speaker 3: is the place you have to talk to people. And
- 3:23Speaker 3: people could talk to you and you can't use your
- 3:25Speaker 3: cell phone. And I'm telling you, those two days were
- 3:27Speaker 3: as cathartic two days as I've ever had. I mean,
- 3:30Speaker 3: no one could reach me. It was great.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Well, the reason I bring up The Masters for this
- 3:35Speaker 2: episode is when I think of Golf, yes, I immediately think
- 3:41Speaker 2: of Lombardo.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Who doesn't because Lombardo dropped that famous line, Sam snead
- 3:52Speaker 5: my God.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 2: And for whatever reason, no matter all the bullshit that
- 3:57Speaker 2: Lombardo would talk about with rating in bowling and whatever,
- 4:01Speaker 2: he would talk about, the only thing that has stuck
- 4:04Speaker 2: with me for fifteen years or longer is Sam Sneid
- 4:09Speaker 2: my God. And like the notion that that still resonates.
- 4:14Speaker 2: In twenty twenty.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Six, Lombardo delivered to us, I don't know, maybe a
- 4:19Speaker 3: thousand words. You remember four I mean.
- 4:23Speaker 2: Sam Sneid my God. And when I'm watching The Masters,
- 4:27Speaker 2: I'm moving blurt out. In fact, you know, there was
- 4:30Speaker 2: a lot of talk this year during one of the
- 4:31Speaker 2: I think it was during a Rory drive, someone yelled out,
- 4:34Speaker 2: give me back my son, and it's it's the old
- 4:38Speaker 2: Mel Gibson line from Ransom. And I saw Jim Rome
- 4:41Speaker 2: do a whole thing on it, like, Hey, that has
- 4:43Speaker 2: to be one of my listeners because we use but
- 4:45Speaker 2: we did it on our show. We used give Me
- 4:46Speaker 2: Back My Son in a million different all the time. Yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 2: sound clips. But I would love for someone during a
- 4:52Speaker 2: drive to yell out Sam Sneid my God.
- 4:56Speaker 3: Now listen, if I ever take you to the Masters,
- 4:58Speaker 3: okay and you blurt out Sam Sneid my God, they
- 5:01Speaker 3: will so fucking quickly hot. That's my role in life.
- 5:06Speaker 2: That's my role in life is to the bamboozle someone
- 5:08Speaker 2: into taking me to the Masters so I can yell
- 5:11Speaker 2: out Sam Snead my God. So we didn't know who
- 5:15Speaker 2: this guy was. This was in two thousand and eleven,
- 5:20Speaker 2: so it's fifteen years ago, and so that means it's
- 5:23Speaker 2: seven years into twenty eleven. Yeah, seven years into the
- 5:26Speaker 2: Levatard Show. So we're you know, we've we've had our
- 5:29Speaker 2: characters and we just take calls every now and then.
- 5:32Speaker 2: And the caller was al on a cell phone, had
- 5:36Speaker 2: no idea that this is what he was going to
- 5:38Speaker 2: launch into. Many people considered this to be the greatest
- 5:43Speaker 2: call that the Lebotard Show has ever taken.
- 5:47Speaker 3: It was Benny and Fort Lauderdale for a while and
- 5:50Speaker 3: then Lombardo just stole the trophy from him. Man, he did,
- 5:54Speaker 3: he did.
- 5:54Speaker 2: This is the actual call, the first ever call from
- 5:58Speaker 2: Al lombardoz.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Al You're on seven ninety yeah, high Lombardo, and I
- 6:05Speaker 6: can't believe how accurate you are on this obvious point.
- 6:09Speaker 6: Well how slow on the uptake the other guy is.
- 6:13Speaker 6: It is so obvious. I mean you take a look
- 6:16Speaker 6: at golf. Someone who has the yips, Sam Snee, My god.
- 6:21Speaker 4: In the late.
- 6:22Speaker 6: Fifties you had to go to side saddle. Then they
- 6:24Speaker 6: had to change the rule. You couldn't go Croquete still
- 6:27Speaker 6: one side saddle the opposite.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Way, so good feet to the left of the ball.
- 6:33Speaker 6: You see guys like Bernhard Longer that have had the
- 6:35Speaker 6: yips and went to the long putter three different times.
- 6:38Speaker 6: You've got guys like Ian Baker. Finch was one of
- 6:39Speaker 6: the greatest putters in the world. When the British Open,
- 6:42Speaker 6: got the yips, went to the long butter, couldn't even
- 6:44Speaker 6: but again quit the game. Became an analyst. You go
- 6:47Speaker 6: to a pool or no better example, you go to bowling.
- 6:51Speaker 6: You trying to tell me that if Mark Roff is
- 6:54Speaker 6: starting to miss a lot of tenpins in the channel,
- 6:56Speaker 6: or hooking it too much that he's going to go
- 6:58Speaker 6: smart enough with you have actually did to a lighter ball,
- 7:02Speaker 6: a fourteen town ball sometimes that looked like a little
- 7:05Speaker 6: child speckled ball, to your local ball and alley, so
- 7:08Speaker 6: we can move cross alley and throw it up to
- 7:11Speaker 6: make ten pins at the ninety five percent right you're
- 7:13Speaker 6: supposed to win a DVA tour, or if you're shooting
- 7:16Speaker 6: pool and you have the closed bridge that all great
- 7:19Speaker 6: players have, like Jimmy Sarra who was the nineteen forty
- 7:22Speaker 6: three champion of the world, who broke me and although
- 7:25Speaker 6: he had he did I had a choke stroke for
- 7:27Speaker 6: the money and he was right. It was a better
- 7:28Speaker 6: three cushion Beyers player. If you can use an open
- 7:32Speaker 6: stroke like Joan Rivers on ben acid, if you get
- 7:36Speaker 6: the job done, get the job done. It's all about
- 7:39Speaker 6: whatever works works. It's just like life. If you want
- 7:44Speaker 6: to go through life trying to fornicate with the most
- 7:46Speaker 6: beautiful woman in the world that you can, I'll also
- 7:49Speaker 6: have a main squeeze and a four to five mistresses
- 7:52Speaker 6: on the side, rock on and then try to keep
- 7:55Speaker 6: trading up but then once you're lucky enough to find
- 7:58Speaker 6: that foxy angel of your life, if you're not smart
- 8:01Speaker 6: enough to grab minor and hold on. Were for fourteen
- 8:04Speaker 6: years while you enjoy your summer home in Lake Garter
- 8:06Speaker 6: for six weeks every year, and you're a dummy. Wick
- 8:10Speaker 6: two got a lame up bake wreck.
- 8:18Speaker 2: There's so much going on, but we didn't know what
- 8:20Speaker 2: hit us. Like twenty seconds thirty second to that call.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I remember, We're all looking at each other like what
- 8:27Speaker 2: is it? Because we didn't know if it was a
- 8:28Speaker 2: put on at first, but it.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Wasn't like you know it now. We looked at each other.
- 8:32Speaker 3: We were all frozen. I was glazed. I had a
- 8:34Speaker 3: glazed look that came over me because I was wondering
- 8:37Speaker 3: if that guy should replace us and do the show.
- 8:39Speaker 7: I mean, in two thousand and eleven, that guy was
- 8:43Speaker 7: using main Squeeze Foxy Angel.
- 8:48Speaker 3: He was right about the Foxy Angel though, I mean,
- 8:50Speaker 3: come on, he was.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Talking about a Billiard's player from nineteen forty three as
- 8:57Speaker 2: if it was something we had just watched that weekend.
- 9:00Speaker 3: And Mark Roth, I mean, I mean, if.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You're gonna talk bowling, it better be Earl Anthony don't
- 9:07Speaker 2: give me this, Mark.
- 9:09Speaker 3: Dare you do that to Mark Roth? He is a legend,
- 9:12Speaker 3: my friend.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Earl Anthony is the legend. How dare you played just
- 9:16Speaker 2: the beginning of the call again because it's so odd
- 9:20Speaker 2: to me. It's Al on a cell phone and then
- 9:23Speaker 2: the guy just goes, Hi Lombardo or something like like
- 9:27Speaker 2: it didn't from the jump. It made no sense. He
- 9:31Speaker 2: was such a character played just at the beginning of
- 9:34Speaker 2: the call again, Al, you're on seven ninety, Yeah, Hi Lombardo. Damn,
- 9:41Speaker 2: it doesn't even like, what does that even mean? Yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 2: Hi Lombardo. Who like, who launches into that? Like if
- 9:47Speaker 2: they go to Mark on a cell phone? I don't
- 9:49Speaker 2: go yeah, hi ackman. Now let me tell you about
- 9:52Speaker 2: the main squeeze and the and the foxy angels that
- 9:56Speaker 2: used to come to the Billiard's tournament.
- 9:58Speaker 3: But when you're Lombardo in your old school, you announce
- 10:01Speaker 3: your name. Oh, you say anything, you know that you'll
- 10:04Speaker 3: do it one day. Trust me, you're right.
- 10:07Speaker 2: When when well, like when you're an older guy and
- 10:10Speaker 2: you know you're the man, Hey Lombardo. He walks into
- 10:14Speaker 2: you know, the restaurant.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Lombardo and even though everyone in the restaurant is saying, hey,
- 10:19Speaker 3: there's Lombardo. They're whispering to each other. He still comes
- 10:22Speaker 3: in and says, hey, Lombardo. Here Lombardo.
- 10:26Speaker 2: So that was maybe the best call that the Levatar
- 10:30Speaker 2: Show had ever received. And he disappeared.
- 10:34Speaker 3: Yeah, and and.
- 10:35Speaker 2: Admittedly the Lebotart Show back then and even this podcast now,
- 10:41Speaker 2: we are nothing like Pablo Torre finds out. We never
- 10:44Speaker 2: researched who he was. We couldn't find him. It just
- 10:49Speaker 2: was it was almost like Batman, you know, where he
- 10:53Speaker 2: just swooped in. And then you were hoping there was
- 10:57Speaker 2: a situation maybe where Batman would have to reappear, and
- 11:01Speaker 2: he did. He called in a second time, another another
- 11:05Speaker 2: al on a cell phone. I don't know how long
- 11:08Speaker 2: this was after it It wasn't like super quick, but
- 11:13Speaker 2: I remember we were delighted it was Lombardo.
- 11:17Speaker 7: And in fact, at the beginning of this call, you
- 11:19Speaker 7: can hear you and Dan real subtly go like real
- 11:26Speaker 7: subtly acknowledging, oh my god.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Lombardo has called again. Here is If you thought the
- 11:32Speaker 2: first call was great, Lombardo had more in his arsenal.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Here is no Sam Snead. I don't believe he's still
- 11:39Speaker 2: The second call from Al Lombardo, Al, you're on.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Seven ninety man, so's the coon tiring of lissen any
- 11:46Speaker 6: Heat management players Man and then a Rege radio sports
- 11:50Speaker 6: tructure hosts for to say that we wait one in
- 11:54Speaker 6: the title a choke a fu point which is permanent
- 11:58Speaker 6: trip at Roman game after winning the opener at home,
- 12:02Speaker 6: and they missed the Ruman with the last twelve shot proathively,
- 12:05Speaker 6: well breathily, they allowed Dallas to hit eleven of their
- 12:09Speaker 6: last twelve shots. In NBA Finals history, with a team
- 12:12Speaker 6: with home court advantage winning the first two games at home,
- 12:15Speaker 6: that team wins the championship. Nine need five percent of
- 12:19Speaker 6: the time, nin need five percent just a minute five
- 12:22Speaker 6: percent chance of losing the series. That's where the Heat
- 12:26Speaker 6: lost the Finals in the last four minutes of Game
- 12:29Speaker 6: two at home, blowing that fourteen point lead, and that
- 12:32Speaker 6: choke cap cost me one hundred thousand dollars because of
- 12:35Speaker 6: the day after the little weasel mself, Commissioner David Start
- 12:39Speaker 6: extended the league. Sorry cap, I got five thousand dollars
- 12:43Speaker 6: in Las Vegas on the Heat at odds of twenty
- 12:45Speaker 6: to one to win it all because not allowed to
- 12:48Speaker 6: heat enough cap space room to sign boat Labrod James
- 12:51Speaker 6: and Chris Bosh. And as usual, I was right on
- 12:53Speaker 6: the button. I just didn't get the one hundred k.
- 12:56Speaker 6: But I will say this to you. It's getting close
- 12:58Speaker 6: to quizmath day. Dan, you are coming it juicy trouble collectedness.
- 13:04Speaker 6: I'll put up a million dollars. You put up one
- 13:08Speaker 6: hundred thousand. That's kind of one of the money in
- 13:10Speaker 6: case you can count, and we'll ask questions about sports
- 13:14Speaker 6: and every sport imaginable, and I'll bury you for dinners.
- 13:19Speaker 6: You know what, I know that I put that salade
- 13:23Speaker 6: up twenty eight years down here a start, and not
- 13:26Speaker 6: one person has accepted the challenge at a million for
- 13:31Speaker 6: a hundred thousand. You're dumb. Now come on, take me
- 13:35Speaker 6: up on it. Every sport of max. Let's go. You
- 13:38Speaker 6: see she froming a trouble correctedis don't you still believe
- 13:42Speaker 6: that Cuban Americans table right to after the two thousand
- 13:46Speaker 6: presidential election, but twenty two percent of people who got
- 13:50Speaker 6: it s that they changed their vote to Bush because
- 13:54Speaker 6: they put that early on did not deserve to be
- 13:57Speaker 6: with his natural brandfather didn't even agree with that, you twister,
- 14:03Speaker 6: but you won't kick me up and that me and
- 14:05Speaker 6: doesn't work a content. You'll make a little joke, nip
- 14:09Speaker 6: or put in here, a little take it here, congratuate
- 14:12Speaker 6: your wrist. It's perfect. When I was with nbcflection station,
- 14:16Speaker 6: I try and ring with twenty eight you hick comes
- 14:20Speaker 6: and rookie if you get it, strick Ford.
- 14:25Speaker 2: That was great.
- 14:30Speaker 3: God in the second call eclipse, the first one.
- 14:34Speaker 2: The second call me of it flipped the first one.
- 14:37Speaker 2: He started, just launched into a diant tribe about the
- 14:41Speaker 2: heat blowing the lead against Dallas, and somehow weaved his
- 14:46Speaker 2: way to Alien Gonzalez.
- 14:49Speaker 8: It was an unbelievable phone call, punctuated with him somehow
- 14:54Speaker 8: getting twenty six shares an NBC somewhere and then finalizing
- 15:00Speaker 8: it with a good Day.
- 15:05Speaker 3: Do you have any doubt he got a twenty six
- 15:07Speaker 3: share at some point in his life? I don't.
- 15:09Speaker 2: I don't think that guy had a radio show. He
- 15:12Speaker 2: should have if.
- 15:13Speaker 3: He didn't, he had twenty six shares.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean that was like Willy Wonka, Good Day, Sir,
- 15:22Speaker 2: I said, good Day.
- 15:23Speaker 3: It's his masterpiece. I would have totally bet on al
- 15:26Speaker 3: over Dan in that trivia contest.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Oh, my god, all knows everything. He knows Billiards, Sam Steve.
- 15:33Speaker 9: My god, it's hard to imagine the show that you
- 15:38Speaker 9: guys were doing.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Lombardo listening to the show, Well, that's always you know.
- 15:43Speaker 2: We used to get phone calls sometimes and we'd go that,
- 15:47Speaker 2: I can't be listening to this show.
- 15:49Speaker 3: Right, there's no way he has to hate it.
- 15:51Speaker 2: It's absolutely impossible, like you have to be in your
- 15:55Speaker 2: own world to listen to what we were doing with
- 16:01Speaker 2: fake Benny from Fort Lauderdale and fake Pavaratti and then
- 16:05Speaker 2: call in with that yes, and for a guy to
- 16:10Speaker 2: listen to our show and be so upset about so
- 16:13Speaker 2: many little things in sports, right, there's no way he listened.
- 16:16Speaker 3: He just picked up the phone every ten years and
- 16:18Speaker 3: it was fantastic though.
- 16:20Speaker 2: So I took those two calls. We turned it into
- 16:22Speaker 2: a big open for our show. We opened every show
- 16:26Speaker 2: for a few months with this open, which was just
- 16:29Speaker 2: all Lombardo attention.
- 16:32Speaker 1: This is there, Dan.
- 16:34Speaker 10: Levata show, Al you're on seven ninety Yeah.
- 16:36Speaker 11: Hi Lombardo, Dan Levatade Rock with st.
- 16:41Speaker 6: Howkman Squeet Dan, you come in it. Two sheet Tribal
- 16:47Speaker 6: Sports of it. I'll put up a million dollars. You
- 16:50Speaker 6: put up one hundred thousand. That kind of wanted the
- 16:53Speaker 6: money taken count.
- 16:54Speaker 4: This is the real base.
- 17:00Speaker 6: Sport, imaginable, and I'll bury you for dinner.
- 17:04Speaker 11: Lombardo, Lombardo, Lombardo.
- 17:09Speaker 6: But you won't take me up on that million dollars
- 17:11Speaker 6: or one hundred thousand dollars. By you'll make little jokes
- 17:14Speaker 6: because sure list it's garbage. When I was with NBC
- 17:18Speaker 6: Frocks and Station, my arbitral rating was twenty eight. You
- 17:21Speaker 6: hit bombs and luck if you get a six.
- 17:24Speaker 4: Good days Lombardo, good day.
- 17:28Speaker 2: He got it just now.
- 17:31Speaker 3: The day stuck, the landing, the landing.
- 17:35Speaker 6: I put that challenge up for twenty eight years down
- 17:38Speaker 6: here at South Florida, and not one person has accepted
- 17:42Speaker 6: the challenge of million, four hundred thousand. He'll problems.
- 17:47Speaker 2: He would crush me in a trivia contest.
- 17:49Speaker 12: The things in that man's mind, Sam snead my god.
- 17:54Speaker 6: Sam snead my god. Fow on the uptake good day,
- 17:58Speaker 6: tenpins in the chapel, Lombardo, whatever works.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Work, Lombardo.
- 18:04Speaker 12: I would lose to that guy, and you would too. No,
- 18:08Speaker 12: I crushed him.
- 18:08Speaker 3: You would lose to that guy and crush him.
- 18:10Speaker 1: You lay up.
- 18:11Speaker 11: Take this The Jan Levetzard Show with Stu Gottsend Hawkman.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Ticket food woting was twenty eight.
- 18:23Speaker 4: If you get a strict.
- 18:29Speaker 3: It's never enough. I knew that line was coming in
- 18:32Speaker 3: a different cadence, with a different I mean, that is
- 18:34Speaker 3: a master class in how you produce an open.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Well done, dog, I have to tell you. Listening to
- 18:40Speaker 2: it now, it's like I almost produced it too well
- 18:43Speaker 2: because the show could never compete with that big open.
- 18:47Speaker 2: You go after two and a half minutes of that,
- 18:49Speaker 2: you'd be.
- 18:50Speaker 3: Like, yes, this is oh my god.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Do you hear what happens on this show? And then
- 18:54Speaker 2: all of a sudden your friend calling in about Don manningly.
- 18:58Speaker 3: Yeah, Donnie, baby, could I ask you? Could I ask
- 19:02Speaker 3: you a question? How do you like? How does that
- 19:04Speaker 3: the process of saying, hey, we have these two calls
- 19:06Speaker 3: from Lombardo, I have the big voice. I want to
- 19:09Speaker 3: turn this into an open, Like, what's the process once
- 19:12Speaker 3: you get the second call? How are you thinking and
- 19:15Speaker 3: figuring out? Hey, that needs to be an open for
- 19:17Speaker 3: this show?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Because I was. When I get enamored with something, I
- 19:22Speaker 2: want to play it over and over and over. Now
- 19:24Speaker 2: you criticize me for that, people criticize Dan for that,
- 19:26Speaker 2: You for that, And even on this podcast, I'll have
- 19:29Speaker 2: people who DM me going, hey, when you guys play
- 19:32Speaker 2: a sound clip, you don't need to play it four times.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I get something in my head. I want to hear
- 19:37Speaker 2: it over and over again. I want to look at
- 19:39Speaker 2: it like it's game film. I want to break it down.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Now Taylor is realizing where I get this from, because
- 19:45Speaker 3: I do it on the radio show all the time.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I played again, playing again, playing again. When I get
- 19:50Speaker 3: fixated on a piece of sound, I just want to
- 19:52Speaker 3: keep hearing it.
- 19:53Speaker 2: You know, Jim Rome does it too. Jim Rome does
- 19:55Speaker 2: it all the time, like he'll have his guys firing
- 19:57Speaker 2: off sounds all show. But I wanted to hear that,
- 20:00Speaker 2: and my thought was, if I can force that into
- 20:05Speaker 2: the show at the beginning of the show every day
- 20:07Speaker 2: for a couple of months, that to me is you know,
- 20:10Speaker 2: pleasing to the ear. And there was enough there like
- 20:14Speaker 2: it just you saw that we were smiling like you'd
- 20:18Speaker 2: hear it. You'd get back to do the show and
- 20:20Speaker 2: you'd hear that, and you'd get and you're just immediately
- 20:22Speaker 2: in a good mood.
- 20:24Speaker 3: There's such an underrated part of that that we kind
- 20:26Speaker 3: of glossed over. It's what it's what Lombardo says, your
- 20:31Speaker 3: little jokes, just the way he took his cad you
- 20:35Speaker 3: know what, walking on that phone.
- 20:38Speaker 2: This is why like to listen to stuff over and over.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Because when I heard that again, now I started to think,
- 20:43Speaker 2: you know what, he does listen to the show on
- 20:45Speaker 2: a regular basis.
- 20:46Speaker 3: He just hates it.
- 20:47Speaker 2: Yes, it's exactly. It's not him not listening. And then
- 20:53Speaker 2: he's just calling a sports show. He's listening day after day.
- 20:57Speaker 2: He's getting angrier and angrier this season. Pansy's that are
- 21:01Speaker 2: doing the radio show, and he knows how to do
- 21:04Speaker 2: a radio show, because here's why the Heat lost, and
- 21:07Speaker 2: here's why Elliam Gonzalez screwed up the entire election, and
- 21:11Speaker 2: here's where Billiards went wrong in nineteen forty three. And
- 21:15Speaker 2: he cannot believe that we're not doing that show. And
- 21:18Speaker 2: finally it hit to a point where he was like, fucking,
- 21:21Speaker 2: I gotta call these motherfuckers. And that's exactly what happened.
- 21:25Speaker 2: I hate them so much, right I was reading, so
- 21:30Speaker 2: I was like, do we know anything about this guy.
- 21:34Speaker 2: I think after I left your show he called again.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I'm not certain.
- 21:39Speaker 3: I think maybe he called one more time and that
- 21:41Speaker 3: was about it. But we did try to get Yeah,
- 21:44Speaker 3: I was.
- 21:45Speaker 2: I was just googling it today just to see if
- 21:47Speaker 2: anybody knows Lombardo. And there was an article I saw
- 21:51Speaker 2: on one oh four point five the team dot com Okay,
- 21:57Speaker 2: and it says who is Eli Lombardo? And this is
- 22:03Speaker 2: from July of twenty twenty, so he was still around
- 22:08Speaker 2: up until a few years ago, and he says The
- 22:12Speaker 2: article says earlier this week, a Capitol region media legend
- 22:16Speaker 2: made national radio headlines with some of his calls to
- 22:19Speaker 2: sports talk radio stations. In case you missed wfa n's
- 22:23Speaker 2: Boomer and g O, Al Yaffi, Lombardo called into the show. Wow,
- 22:29Speaker 2: Taylor's got that audio right. This is a little bit
- 22:32Speaker 2: of Al Lombardo calling Boomer and go on WFAN.
- 22:37Speaker 3: He's cheating on us.
- 22:38Speaker 12: I mean, but like ten years later, go down to
- 22:43Speaker 12: Boca ratone and talk to Al, who joins us.
- 22:46Speaker 4: What's up? Al, Hey, guys, good morning morning, good morning.
- 22:50Speaker 13: Now because of pandemic, I've had a lot more chance
- 22:53Speaker 13: to watch the show, and Tim I only have one.
- 22:58Speaker 10: Oh you got criticism? Okay, very good?
- 23:00Speaker 13: He considering to this day, I have the highest arbitron
- 23:06Speaker 13: ratings of any sports talk show in.
- 23:09Speaker 6: The history of the States.
- 23:11Speaker 10: Really out with.
- 23:12Speaker 13: The NBC flagship station. My arbitron rating was twenty nine.
- 23:17Speaker 10: What what's what's your name? That's your full name?
- 23:19Speaker 4: Now?
- 23:19Speaker 10: Where'd you work?
- 23:20Speaker 13: Name is al Lombardo?
- 23:22Speaker 10: Al Lombardo? Okay, very good? Where where did you work?
- 23:25Speaker 13: I worked at the NBC flegship station at Schenecta, New York, Homa.
- 23:30Speaker 13: Pat Riley with my father, refereed many of his games.
- 23:33Speaker 13: I'm from Almaney, the capital of course New York State.
- 23:36Speaker 13: Here's my constructive Christians. All right, go ahead, yeah, I
- 23:40Speaker 13: find that wo meet My show so outstanding? Was not
- 23:44Speaker 13: only my knowledge? Aren't twenty five different sports? Not just
- 23:48Speaker 13: to meat potatoes of football, basketball, baseball?
- 23:51Speaker 10: Twenty twenty five sports?
- 23:52Speaker 4: Okay?
- 23:53Speaker 13: It seems like you guys cut off the callers too quick,
- 23:57Speaker 13: or if they disagree with your thought pattern, you.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Cut them off.
- 24:04Speaker 4: Anyway.
- 24:04Speaker 13: That's what made my show the best, because if somebody
- 24:09Speaker 13: had me up against the ropes, I took it. You
- 24:12Speaker 13: guys who beately go to the click button. No, I'll
- 24:14Speaker 13: give you an example. What's the oldest original sport.
- 24:18Speaker 2: The thing that fascinates me about this guy is he
- 24:22Speaker 2: talks about himself. First of all, it was a twenty
- 24:24Speaker 2: six share when he was on with us. It's twenty
- 24:26Speaker 2: nine share when he's on with Boomer and g O.
- 24:28Speaker 2: I'm so proud of him. Yeah, there's a lot of
- 24:32Speaker 2: stutts in Lombardo.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yeah. And by the way, you can feel like Geo's
- 24:37Speaker 3: asking a bunch of follow ups, you can feel them
- 24:39Speaker 3: falling into the Lombardo trance because he suddenly just stopped talking.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Right, You can't you can't get enough of the guy
- 24:45Speaker 2: because he gets locked in. But they're like, what made
- 24:49Speaker 2: your show so good? He's like, my intellect? What I
- 24:53Speaker 2: was so intellectual and entertaining? And then he keeps talking
- 24:58Speaker 2: about his show though, like it was this monumental show
- 25:02Speaker 2: that everyone knows of, but no one's heard of the
- 25:04Speaker 2: Al Lombardo Show.
- 25:06Speaker 3: I mean, you and I are students of talk radio.
- 25:09Speaker 3: If there was a guy putting up twenty nine shares, right,
- 25:12Speaker 3: we would have known about them.
- 25:15Speaker 2: So it says on this article at one, four or five,
- 25:18Speaker 2: the team right until earlier this week. I had never
- 25:22Speaker 2: heard of this guy's time. His numbers are quite impressive. However,
- 25:27Speaker 2: Boomer and GEO is not the only national sports talk
- 25:30Speaker 2: radio show Al has called into. He's called into the
- 25:34Speaker 2: Dan Lebottard Show with Stu Goats again. You can hear
- 25:38Speaker 2: Al's call provided in the audio below. The guy rights,
- 25:42Speaker 2: I continue to be fascinated by this guy. I've asked
- 25:45Speaker 2: around involving long tenured media personaliti. In fact, The Times
- 25:50Speaker 2: Union's own Pete Doherty included Lombardo as an honorable mention
- 25:56Speaker 2: of Capital Region media Personalities Mount Rushmore. Wow, so maybe
- 26:03Speaker 2: he did have a local show in Schenectady.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Well that's what he said, Yes, but who knows what
- 26:08Speaker 3: maybe true because he had twenty six chares with us
- 26:10Speaker 3: in twenty nine shares with Boomer.
- 26:11Speaker 2: So but he keeps talking about how he was on
- 26:14Speaker 2: NBC's flagship station in Schenectady. And now I'm starting to
- 26:18Speaker 2: think that Alambardo isn't aware of what an actual flagship
- 26:21Speaker 2: station is versus an affiliate. Now I think I'm getting
- 26:27Speaker 2: to the I am like Pablo Torri, fine.
- 26:29Speaker 3: You really are?
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yes, Now I feel like I'm getting to the bottom
- 26:32Speaker 2: of this Alambardo was working at a small NBC affiliate
- 26:38Speaker 2: in Schenectady. Yes, and in his warped mind, he was
- 26:42Speaker 2: working at the NBC flagship and Marv Albert was coming
- 26:46Speaker 2: in after him and his and in his warped mind,
- 26:49Speaker 2: thirty percent of that market Schenectady, New York was listening.
- 26:53Speaker 4: To his show.
- 26:55Speaker 2: But when he called into Boomer and Geo, he says,
- 26:57Speaker 2: al from Boca Ratone, this guy could live in my building.
- 27:03Speaker 3: You might see him every day.
- 27:05Speaker 2: It is so possible. I've been in Boca so long.
- 27:09Speaker 2: It is so possible that I have been in the
- 27:12Speaker 2: same place as Lombardo. I mean at the same time.
- 27:16Speaker 2: I mean like.
- 27:17Speaker 3: Perhaps you, yes, perhaps you were having avocado toast at
- 27:20Speaker 3: the same time as Lombardo alvocado toast one.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Hundred percent, Lombardo. If you're out there, find me. The
- 27:32Speaker 2: avocado toast is on me, Lombardo.
- 27:36Speaker 3: I'm good if you leave me alone.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Anyway, The Masters always reminds me of Lombardo.
- 27:45Speaker 3: It's weird. It never reminds me of Lombardo.
- 27:49Speaker 2: Yes, it will forever more. Can you play the Big
- 27:52Speaker 2: Open one more time? Taylor, because I think it's a
- 27:56Speaker 2: good way to punctuate our memories of Lombardo. Though this
- 28:00Speaker 2: is the big open that we did on the show
- 28:03Speaker 2: for months after his calls potential.
- 28:07Speaker 1: This is they're Dan Levitta.
- 28:09Speaker 10: Show al You're on seven ninety.
- 28:10Speaker 11: Yeah, Hi Lombardo, Dan leviatar rock on with student Guns
- 28:15Speaker 11: and Hockman Squeeze.
- 28:17Speaker 6: Attention, Dan, you affeminate touiceet tribal collectivists. I'll put up
- 28:23Speaker 6: a million dollars. You put up one hundred thousand. That
- 28:26Speaker 6: kind of one of the money tat you can count.
- 28:28Speaker 4: This is the real base.
- 28:30Speaker 6: And we'll ask questions about sports atention every sport imaginable,
- 28:36Speaker 6: and I'll bury.
- 28:37Speaker 4: You for dinner. Lombardo. Attention Lombardo Lombardo.
- 28:43Speaker 6: But you won't take me up on a million dollars
- 28:45Speaker 6: or one hundred thousand dollars. Bear, you'll make little jokes
- 28:48Speaker 6: because show with it's garbage. When I was with NBC
- 28:52Speaker 6: for Except Station, my arbitron rating was twenty eight. You
- 28:56Speaker 6: hick bombs and lucky if you get a six.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Good day basis pumpermar.
- 29:01Speaker 12: Hood day, he got it, just nailed to the day,
- 29:06Speaker 12: stuck the lending, stuck, the landing.
- 29:09Speaker 6: I put that challenge up for twenty eight years down
- 29:12Speaker 6: here at tam Florida, and not one person of the
- 29:16Speaker 6: captain the challenge of million four hundred ParvE it held problem.
- 29:21Speaker 3: He would crush me in a triviune content.
- 29:23Speaker 10: The things in that man's mind.
- 29:26Speaker 3: Damn snead my God, dam snead my God.
- 29:31Speaker 6: Fall on the uptake good day, can pins in the channel, Lombardo,
- 29:35Speaker 6: Whatever works works, Lombardo.
- 29:38Speaker 12: I would lose to that guy, and you would too.
- 29:42Speaker 12: Now I crushed him. You would lose to that guy
- 29:44Speaker 12: and rush him.
- 29:45Speaker 4: You lay up.
- 29:45Speaker 11: Take This is the Dan Levetzard Show with Stu Gottsend
- 29:49Speaker 11: Hackman on seven ninety A ticket.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Hot Day, WHOA My chart rating was twenty eight. You
- 29:56Speaker 4: I'm lucky if you.
- 29:57Speaker 6: Get a.
- 30:02Speaker 1: They so good man.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Listen. There's a lesson in that open Hawk to tailor
- 30:08Speaker 3: to all the youngsters who are trying to get into
- 30:11Speaker 3: this business and make an impression in this business. Hawk
- 30:15Speaker 3: cared about every second that he controlled of that show.
- 30:19Speaker 3: There was not a second that Hawk didn't care about.
- 30:21Speaker 3: Didn't produce it, didn't produce it to the best of
- 30:23Speaker 3: his abilities, because he knew even the open was important
- 30:27Speaker 3: to the listeners, and.
- 30:30Speaker 2: It was one of the reasons that we did the
- 30:31Speaker 2: big Voice, you know where Dan wanted the show to
- 30:34Speaker 2: sound unlike other shows in the market, and that open
- 30:40Speaker 2: is unlike any open in radio.
- 30:42Speaker 3: So good.
- 30:43Speaker 2: No one had the guts to do an open that long, right.
- 30:47Speaker 2: The whole thought is hey, quick, open, get into the content.
- 30:50Speaker 3: Always yes, and that was like that was unheard of.
- 30:54Speaker 2: But to me, you couldn't. You couldn't turn that off.
- 30:58Speaker 3: That could have gone on Lawnger. You knew the audience
- 31:01Speaker 3: loved that. That's why you put it together. Like our
- 31:03Speaker 3: show is littered with inside jokes and there was no
- 31:05Speaker 3: bigger inside joke than Lombardo at the time.
- 31:08Speaker 4: Bardo Man.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Anyway, all the people who DM me about this podcast,
- 31:13Speaker 2: I appreciate it. You can DM me Radio. Mark Hawkman
- 31:16Speaker 2: is my Instagram account. Someone DM hawk loved the show
- 31:21Speaker 2: you and Stutt's have been doing. I know this wasn't
- 31:24Speaker 2: on the Levatard Show, but I have to ask, do
- 31:26Speaker 2: you still keep in touch with Warren Cromarty. Segment he
- 31:29Speaker 2: did with you and Zaz were goddamn funny, and I'm
- 31:33Speaker 2: curious if he was as difficult off the air and
- 31:36Speaker 2: hard to contain as it seemed you did shows with
- 31:39Speaker 2: Crow as well.
- 31:40Speaker 3: Didn't you a qam? Yeah, call me homie. That was
- 31:44Speaker 3: his catchphrase. I did. Warren Cromarty was He was a
- 31:48Speaker 3: good man. He had an odd relationship with a band Rush.
- 31:52Speaker 3: Do you remember that hawk. He was really confront with me,
- 31:54Speaker 3: Ketty Lee. He was really good friends with Neil Pert,
- 31:56Speaker 3: the greatest drummer of all time. Perhaps he was best
- 32:00Speaker 3: friends with those guys. But Crow was a good guy
- 32:02Speaker 3: on air off air. He was not difficult to work with.
- 32:05Speaker 3: He was fine. He was a pleasure to work with.
- 32:07Speaker 2: I like Crow, well, I will tell you he was.
- 32:10Speaker 2: I was the program director at seven ninety and he
- 32:14Speaker 2: was difficult. When I would I would explain him all
- 32:17Speaker 2: the time, like you get paid every two weeks, and
- 32:20Speaker 2: then he would call me three days later and go,
- 32:22Speaker 2: hey I need that check, and I go, everyone gets
- 32:25Speaker 2: paid in two weeks, Like, I don't know how else to.
- 32:27Speaker 3: I did tell you to.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Yeah. So, but he took me and Zaslow to a
- 32:33Speaker 2: Rush concert. I'm looking for the picture right now for
- 32:35Speaker 2: those who are good watched this on YouTube. He took
- 32:38Speaker 2: me and Zaslow to a Rush concert at what's now
- 32:42Speaker 2: the amorant Ye Bank arena and he introduced us to
- 32:46Speaker 2: the guys. Do you know how they loved him is
- 32:49Speaker 2: they were huge Getty Lee is a huge baseball fan.
- 32:52Speaker 2: And Crow played for the Expos.
- 32:54Speaker 3: That's right. Yeah, they're from Montreal, they're Canadian. Crow played
- 32:57Speaker 3: for the Expos with like Andre Dawson, Rains and those
- 33:01Speaker 3: teams and ballplayer man Crow was a was a very
- 33:05Speaker 3: good baseball player. And you're right now now that you've
- 33:08Speaker 3: jarred my memory here. He was a legend in Montreal
- 33:11Speaker 3: and that's where Rush was born. Those guys were born there,
- 33:14Speaker 3: so and then became a legend in Japan. Yeah, because
- 33:19Speaker 3: he played baseball in Japan for.
- 33:20Speaker 1: A long time.
- 33:21Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, legend.
- 33:23Speaker 2: Picture.
- 33:26Speaker 3: So it's you Crow, Getty Lee, and Neil Pert. You've
- 33:28Speaker 3: meted Lee Hawk, Yeah.
- 33:30Speaker 2: But I don't think Neil Perts in the picture. It's
- 33:33Speaker 2: me Crow Zazlo.
- 33:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 33:38Speaker 2: This is the funniest thing. The only picture I can
- 33:41Speaker 2: find is me and Crow picking up the tickets in
- 33:44Speaker 2: front of the arena.
- 33:49Speaker 3: That's such a good picture. It's a great shot.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Yes, those were better actually.
- 33:54Speaker 9: Actually, on the back up cover of Russia's nineteen eighty
- 33:59Speaker 9: two release of Signals, there's a blueprint for the fictional
- 34:04Speaker 9: Warren Cromarty Secondary School.
- 34:06Speaker 3: Yeah, really tell you best friends? Yes, yes, yes, I'm
- 34:10Speaker 3: telling you what an odd relationship?
- 34:14Speaker 2: Why can't I find the picture of me and the band?
- 34:18Speaker 3: You got the worst picture right there, great pictures from
- 34:21Speaker 3: the event, and you have the only one that's banned.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Oh look at you.
- 34:27Speaker 2: Look at you page just stepping to stumble across it.
- 34:37Speaker 3: Thank you for sharing that. I thought it was Asla.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Where's my goddamn picture with Rush?
- 34:45Speaker 3: You know what I'm telling you. When you when you
- 34:47Speaker 3: need to find a picture, it's never there for you.
- 34:49Speaker 3: And then.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Looking for something it's just me and Rush.
- 34:58Speaker 3: You'll be looking for that woody page picture for a
- 35:00Speaker 3: different conversation. I'll be able to find it.
- 35:05Speaker 2: The hell is that picture?
- 35:06Speaker 4: Anyway?
- 35:08Speaker 2: But all the people who DM me, I do respond
- 35:12Speaker 2: to everybody. And if there's something you want to hear
- 35:13Speaker 2: on this podcast, it's radio Mark Hawkman on Instagram, just
- 35:18Speaker 2: dm me. You know Buddha, our friend who has to
- 35:24Speaker 2: run a lot of restaurants in South Florida, including Prime Italian,
- 35:28Speaker 2: but he runs Burton Max's and del Rey and I
- 35:31Speaker 2: always say Burton max Is in dec. Eighty four are
- 35:33Speaker 2: our Defecto sponsors for our podcast. Buddha told me that
- 35:37Speaker 2: someone did come in last week to Burton Max's nice
- 35:41Speaker 2: say that he heard them heard about him on the
- 35:45Speaker 2: with Stegatts and Hawkman podcast. Also asked him to buy
- 35:48Speaker 2: them an Apperol sprits, which is what I said he
- 35:51Speaker 2: would do, and he said I did indeed give the
- 35:54Speaker 2: guy an Aperol sprits.
- 35:56Speaker 3: What a day for you all takes is one we
- 35:58Speaker 3: get another month out of Buddha. I mean, that's it.
- 36:00Speaker 2: In the time of our lives. I went to Dec
- 36:02Speaker 2: eighty four. The del Rey Affair was a Friday Saturday
- 36:06Speaker 2: Sunday in Delray Beach.
- 36:07Speaker 4: How was it?
- 36:08Speaker 2: I was looking for Lombardo, of course, you know Boca
