- 1:21Yours Truly Johnny Dollar. Original air dight June sixteenth, nineteen fifty seven,
- 1:26and the title is the Dixon Murder Matter from Hollywood. It's time now for
- 1:38Johnny Dollar. The faces are loaded. There's nobody at what and you're pinching
- 1:42Johnny boy, bur my girl, yep, what's in your mind? For
- 1:48you? In a job. You didn't finish a job, I didn't.
- 1:51What are you talking about it? Donation diction matter? Remember for sure,
- 1:53Ruth Dixon's body was found on Newport Beach. You didn't find out who killed
- 1:57it, Johnny. I figured that was the job for the police. They
- 2:00want to talk to you about that, and so do we. Oh?
- 2:04Yeah, Ruth Dixon was insured with our company? How much on thousand dollars?
- 2:07One thousand? You don't expect me to go back to Newport for the
- 2:10commission? I'll make God Dad, do you no? But if you'll go,
- 2:14we'll put the bill. Oh, how come tell you when you get
- 2:17here? Interested? Yeah? Now, Bob Bailey and the Exciting Adventures of
- 2:30the Man with the action packed expense to cause America's fabulous freelance insurance investigators,
- 2:37Truly Johnny Dollar, no act one of yours, Truly Johnny Dollars. Expense
- 3:01account submitted by Special Investigator Johnny Dollar, the Providential Assurance Company, three nine
- 3:07three Dewey Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is the account of expenses
- 3:12incurred during my investigation of the Dixon murder matter. Expense account out of won
- 3:20a dollar and twenty cents taxi from my apartment to the Providential building along the
- 3:23way. I did some thinking. A week ago, a girl's body had
- 3:28been found on Newport Beach. The Masons and the Dixons had each identified it
- 3:32as the body of their missing daughter. I managed to locate the Mason girl.
- 3:38That meant that Ruth Dixon was the girl on the beach who had killed
- 3:43Ruth. Well, I didn't figure that was my job, but evidently the
- 3:47brands that Providential did. Why Well, I hope Bert McGraw would tell me,
- 3:54Oh, Johnny, I mean me, eh, morning, Bert,
- 3:58about this diction matter. I suppose you're wondering why we're so anxious for you
- 4:01to go back to Newport, while I am kind of curious. Well,
- 4:04I told you Ruth Dixon was insured with our company, But are only one
- 4:09thousand dollars. You'd save money by paying it off and forgetting it maybe,
- 4:14but it isn't that easy. Oh why on because of the Newport Police for
- 4:16one thing? Or what have they got to do with her insurance? Well,
- 4:19not a thing, but they have got plenty to do with our company
- 4:23and its representatives, and last week you were one of them. So the
- 4:27Newport Police Captain Lewis of homicide. To be exact, cold here this morning,
- 4:30ost Lewis Miller was the man I worked with. Lewis took over because
- 4:34Miller didn't follow up on you, and he's very unhappy with you, Johnny.
- 4:39I can't imagine why. Now, Well, Captain Lewis says you left
- 4:43Newport without giving his office all the information you had on the Mason girl.
- 4:46The Mason girl, what she got to do with the Dixon investigators. Well,
- 4:49how should I know? Dollar Mason didn't even know Ruth Dixon. Lewis
- 4:54says different. But that's beside the point. We can't afford to have any
- 4:58police department in this country feeling the the Newport boys do about our investigators.
- 5:01Oh, come on now, Bird, it isn't at all. That's serious,
- 5:04Johnny. We have to have police cooperation, and we can't force them
- 5:08to cooperate, so we try to build up a sufficient amount of goodwill.
- 5:12But burn Now it's too late to apologize, apollow. Captain Lewis chewed out
- 5:15my boss. My boss did it to me, and I have orders to
- 5:18do it to you, Okay, So get it over with. Well,
- 5:21i I'm almost through, except that no matter what it couses. It's gonna
- 5:28be worth it to have good will restore it. You understand, sure,
- 5:30And whatever you do in Newport, please keep Captain Lewis informed. See if
- 5:35you stumble on to something that might lead to the Dixon Girls killer, tell
- 5:39Lewis about it. Okay for it? Whatever you say? Oh no,
- 5:43hard feelings, Johnny, No, no, no, everything's just fun.
- 5:46Good boy, glad to see you understand. For an expense account like the
- 5:50one you're going to get, I can understand the theory of relativity. I
- 6:01took a camp back to my apartment that side of two it him three eighteen
- 6:04dollars and fifty cents transportation of Newport, Rhode Island. After checking into the
- 6:10Ogden Hotel, I called headquarters. Captain Lewis wasn't in, so I left
- 6:13a message asking him to call me. Then I called the girl in question,
- 6:16Darla Mason. Johnny, Hi, what are you doing back in the
- 6:21new Park? Oh? Just winding up a little unfinished business. Nothing to
- 6:27do with me, I hope, No, not a thing, uh,
- 6:31Darla? Yeah, if you're not busy then night. Why don't you meet
- 6:36me for dinner? Why? Johnny? I love you? Fine? You
- 6:41say where. Well, how about the chat eight. I can take the
- 6:46cruiser from my doc and after dinner we can go for a ride on the
- 6:49bay. That sounds great. See you at eight ten. Hi, bye
- 6:57bye. Expense account it him four fifteen dollars worth of American beauty roses for
- 7:04Ruth Dixon's mother. I rented a car and drove out to the Dixon home.
- 7:10The moment I stepped into the house, I could smell the heavy,
- 7:12sweet odor of oriental incense. While missus Dixon put the flowers in water,
- 7:16I located the source of the incense. It came from an ornate burner on
- 7:20the mantel in the living room. Behind the burner, draped in black,
- 7:24was a large photograph of Ruth Dixon, and on each side of the photograph
- 7:28were two lighted candles. Oh, mister Dalla, these are the most beautiful
- 7:32ruses I've ever seen. Well, uh, I'm glad you liked them.
- 7:38Oh yeah, Ruth, Ruth too. I beg your pardon, I said,
- 7:43Ruth will like them too. I'll take them to her in the morning,
- 7:46that is, if you don't mind. Oh no, no, not
- 7:49at all, mister Dona. I don't know how you've see in about such
- 7:53things. But I believe those who passed someone never really leave. What do
- 8:00you think? Well, I uh, I haven't given much thought to the
- 8:05subject, but you should. Ruth will appreciate these rouses. There's much a
- 8:09more than she ever would have. Do you believe best? Well? I
- 8:16am well, I didn't know Ruth when she was a lot. Once she
- 8:20was here. Oh that's right, you didn't. Well, she's still here.
- 8:26And if there's any doubt in your mind, why you just come with
- 8:30me and visit Madame Dessalle. Madame dessal. Yeah, she's been such a
- 8:35help and comfort to me this past few days. Well, without her and
- 8:39her teaching, I'd have been completely lost. This Madame Dessalle, what is
- 8:46she? She's just an ordinary person, but she has wonderful arcult powers.
- 8:52She can see beyond the rail, mister Dalla, and she's promised to let
- 8:56me seek to Ruth as soon as the condition the ride. Do you know
- 9:01what Nevill did seal in here? Henry? Oh, excuse mister Dollar,
- 9:07I have to put out good scandal. Henry doesn't believe like we do.
- 9:13Why again, haven't your women? No, Henry, open the windows,
- 9:20get the smoke and the smell out of Oh, mister Dollar, after ass
- 9:26diition, what are you doing back in Newport? He's trying to find a
- 9:28man that caused our girl to pass on. Oh she didn't pass on,
- 9:33Lucille, she died, Henry. Really well, anyway, I wish you
- 9:37lost, mister Dollar. I have a hunch I'm going to need it,
- 9:41mister Dixon, mister Dollar, wouldn't you like to stay to dinner? We
- 9:43aren't having anything since they just let me boiled cabbage head? Oh my no,
- 9:50what why? I just remembered why I burned that intense And it wasn't
- 9:54what you thought, Henry Dixon. It was on account of the cabbage.
- 9:58It covers the smell. That's not the truth, and you know it.
- 10:01Oh now look at that mantle, mister Dollar. She's made a regular shrine
- 10:07out of it. Looks like a heathen alder. Henry, Well, it's
- 10:11the truth. And I wouldn't blame mister Dollar if he was afraid the state
- 10:15of dinner with a woman like you around, You aren't afraid to stay on,
- 10:18mister do No, of course not. But I do have another engagement.
- 10:22Oh well, anytime you can come, you just let us know.
- 10:24Yes, thanks, I'll remember, well, you excuse me, you will,
- 10:30and you open the windows in the back, yes, Henry, oh,
- 10:35yes, when Madame Destall arranges, that's all. When Madame Desaul arranges
- 10:41for me to talk to Ruth, I'll let you know what she says.
- 10:46Good evening. Who're there. She hasn't been the same since Ruth's body was
- 10:54found on the beach, mister Dixon. According to the medical examiner, Ruth's
- 10:58body was in the ocean for approximate six weeks. That's right. Do you
- 11:01remember if Ruth was going with anyone in particular just before the time she disappeared.
- 11:07The police asked me the same question. I couldn't answer. Do you
- 11:11mean you don't remember? I mean that Ruth wasn't the girl that he tied
- 11:13down to one man and anymore. And she's content to live like she had
- 11:18to after my health failed. Did she date very often? Well, you
- 11:22know, she worked as a hostess at the yacht club. She met a
- 11:26lot of rich young men there, and if you asked me, she dated
- 11:30too much. Of course, her mother took Ruth's side, said she had
- 11:33to she was ever going to get herself a husband. But she went with
- 11:37no one in particular. No, she never settled down enough. Ah what
- 11:43about her friends, mister Dixon, was there's someone she might have confided in.
- 11:46She didn't have any girlfriends like men a lot better? Ah, Oh
- 11:52there was somebody. Well, I expect you could say he was her friend
- 11:58too old, who had been boyfriend. Besides, he doesn't have enough money
- 12:01for is he His name Sam Hood? He runs a small craft repair shop
- 12:07down by Viking Beach Viking Beaches on the Atlantic side of Newport, approximately a
- 12:16mile from Land's End, where the Dixon girl's body had been washed the shore.
- 12:20Once there, I didn't have any trouble locating. Sam Hood's repair shop
- 12:24was on the end of a large wharf. For a moment, I thought
- 12:28the wharf was deserted, and I heard it throw the wharf sitting over on
- 12:31the water with an old converted peatea boat. I'm standing on deck, tickering
- 12:35with the controls with a heavy set man wearing thick glasses and greasy dungarease.
- 12:39I was about to call him when he looked up at noon. I can
- 12:43I help it? Yeah, I hope. So I'm looking for Sam Hood.
- 12:48Yeah go on, Oh fine, you're not doing anything for I'm his
- 12:54brother. Leroy. Wow, yeah, Leroy, maybe you can't. You
- 12:58want me to come up, and you're gonna come down. I'll come down.
- 13:01But how do I do it? Yeah? Over? You left there?
- 13:05Oh sure you're a stranger around here, ain't you. Yeah, that's
- 13:09right. Well, I'm always glad to meet up with a stranger. This
- 13:15is such a little bitty place. Most everybody along the waterfronts heard everybody else.
- 13:18The's story is a minute time until it's sick of it. What did
- 13:20you say? Your name was? It's Dollar, Johnny Dollar. Well,
- 13:24welcome aboard the Cornormore, mister Dollar, Connomore. That's an odd name for
- 13:28a book. Sure, here's anything, but I found it in a book.
- 13:33Sure, Fitzer, and me too. Where are you lying? The
- 13:37dollar? I'm an insurance investigator. Whoa, Now that must be mighty interesting
- 13:41work. Yeah, sometimes you get you to back. Oh thanks? Oh
- 13:46well, I got a brand new plug around you here. He'd had it
- 13:50out of the wrapper. So if you want something, oh thanks? You
- 13:52sure missing something? Yeah? Yeah? Here? What did you say?
- 14:07I said? The colon went fancy yacht. But she's all mine in Sam's
- 14:13and I'm proud of uh where did you say your brother was they were Sam?
- 14:18Oh, he's just my folks down in Augusta. I would have gone
- 14:22too, but somebody had to stay in mine the store. Yeah, you
- 14:28know when they would be back, not for sure, but anything Sam knows
- 14:33about soul I we got real running miles in our family. Tell me,
- 14:37Leroy, did you know a girl named Ruth Dixon? Nor one? Just
- 14:43that took my hat to But Sam did that, sir? That gallon Sam.
- 14:48He used to set up there on the wharf looking out to a Booster
- 14:52Island and they talk, talk talk. You know what about you all been
- 14:58radio like? Brother? Yeah, Leroy, you told me a moment ago.
- 15:03Sam couldn't keep a secret. Well, he said she was full of
- 15:09dreams. Man, you asked me she was nothing but another too, Timon,
- 15:15just like all of them. Oh that's not a very good opinion of
- 15:18herly Roy, I can't help it. Sam was crazy for her, but
- 15:22she didn't let all watch. She knew it. How did your brother take
- 15:24the news of her death? Oh? Just awful that when I left town,
- 15:28yep, Sam on a thirty eight revolver le Roy. Sure, most
- 15:35everybody who has a boat on something like that. But Hey, wait a
- 15:39minute, you getting ideas. No, I'm just asking questions. Oh well,
- 15:46Sam couldn't kill the I know it? What makes you so sure?
- 15:50Well, because he's my brother, and how he was so broken when he
- 15:52heard about Rufe. Why would you suppose anybody'd want to put a bullet and
- 15:58he put it? Yeah, I like that. I don't know, LEI,
- 16:03I don't know. I asked him a few more questions, watched him
- 16:11chase the seagulls off the rainting once more, then left. At seven forty
- 16:15five, I was sitting in the hot club bar waiting for Dalla Mason.
- 16:19At eight thirty I was still waiting, and at nine thirty I gave up
- 16:22and went back to my hotel. I hadn't been in my room ten minutes
- 16:26before something started founding on the door. A Dad, I know it there?
- 16:32Hey, yeah, who is it? Capital? And open up?
- 16:36Uh? Good evening, Kevin, Nothing good about huh? Fine thing you
- 16:41pulled? You come over here to help, Then you go gallivant and all
- 16:42point nobody can find. I called your office as soon as I hit town
- 16:45because the people you're working for in Hartford told you to Now look that insurance
- 16:51agent said you were skeptical about there being a connection between the Mason and the
- 16:53Dixon. Ice still am, you won't be when I tell you what happened
- 16:56earlier this evening a chase. So what happened. Vlamason was shot and the
- 17:00bullet came from the same gun that killed Ruth. Six back too of yours,
- 17:21truly giant dollar in a moment. It is a very well known fact
- 17:26that symbols are important to men everywhere, whether they be symbols of the country,
- 17:32religion, or honor. They're a cherished part of the culture and tradition
- 17:37of all peoples, as in almost all countries of the world. The people
- 17:41of Spain are very religious, and in the Spanish town of Vendrel, the
- 17:47people were having difficulty with a symbol, a three hundred pound angel sitting on
- 17:53top of one hundred and fifty foot church people. The angel had been there
- 17:59since seventeen eighty four and needed repairs keep it from falling down on the heads
- 18:04of the parishioners. But one hundred and fifty feet is a long way up
- 18:11and three hundred pounds or a lot of weight to bring down, and it
- 18:15was a great deal of head scratching over the problem until someone casually mentioned the
- 18:21problem to someone else who happened at the stationed at the United States Air Force
- 18:26Base in Zaragoza, Spain. It wasn't long before visions of a helicopter came
- 18:33to mind. Because Americans liked to help other people everywhere, the Air Force
- 18:37whirliford lifted the angel from the church people, brought it down for repairs,
- 18:44and later returned it to its perch. So grateful were the people of Vendrel
- 18:48for this active friendly cooperation that they held a mass celebration of American Day to
- 18:56show their appreciation. Television and newsreels carried the story of kindness, so that
- 19:02the newspapers and magazine throughout stain. This gesture on the part of the United
- 19:07States Air Force created a new symbol, a symbol of friendship and understanding that
- 19:14became a symbol of freedom, the right of all men everywhere. Now Act
- 19:19two of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and the Dixon Murder about her yeah expense
- 19:30account adam six twenty cents for two cups of coffee of the Righte Caffe near
- 19:33my hotel or Captain Lewis proceeded to give me the details surrounding the shooting of
- 19:37Jalla Mason. She had been on her way down to the Mason Boathouse,
- 19:41where she planned to take the cruiser across the bay of the yut Pumment.
- 19:45As she neared the boathouse, someone had fired at her, and the bullets
- 19:48that wounded her came from the same gun that killed Ruth Dixon. So there
- 19:53was a connection between the Mason Dixon girls. And if you want more proof,
- 19:57I have, like, what, well if both bend a good deal
- 20:00of their time at the yacht club, Yeah, but for a slightly different
- 20:03reason. Ruth worked there before she was killed. But you must have known
- 20:07Dla. They's no, no, that's no good, Captain. You go
- 20:11to the district attorney with that kind of evidence and he'll throw you out of
- 20:12his office. He'll want proof they knew each other. And how well?
- 20:17Yeah, I suppose what about Darla? When can we see her? Will
- 20:21the doctors tell us we can? She still asked me regained consciousness. Hey,
- 20:26captain, do you know whether Masons have the work done on their cruising?
- 20:30Yeah? And that's another thing. That's Sam Hood's place. Have you
- 20:33questioned him? Never had a chance to Gordy was brother. He's away on
- 20:37some sort of vacation down Georgia. Left the David Dixon girl's body was identified.
- 20:41Are you sure he's still in Georgia? Well, I can ask the
- 20:45gust To Believes to check up on him if he is, have them tell
- 20:48him about Darla being shot up and find out if he knew her. Okay,
- 20:52well you ready? Yeah? No one was seen calling around the Mason
- 20:59place tonight. Nobody else was down at the boat house. Thanks Johnny for
- 21:03sure. Then stop being so formal. My name's Pete. Talk. Well,
- 21:11I guess we've done all we can for a while. I'm not so
- 21:14sure here, what do you mean? I'm not sure about that either,
- 21:18But I have an idea or maybe I ought to call it a hunch about
- 21:22what Well, I like to sleep on it first, If it's all the
- 21:27same to you? Have I had anything to say in the matter, help,
- 21:32not a bet. It was late and I was tired, so I
- 21:37did the obvious thing and went to bed. Really the next morning I called
- 21:41the hospital. Dalla Mason had regained consciousness and would recover, but she couldn't
- 21:48be questioned for another two or three days. So I finished dressing and went
- 21:51down for breakfast. I was crossing the lobby when someone called me. Oh,
- 21:57missus Dixon, just see you. Well you should have called out of
- 22:02come right down. Oh I was afraid i'd wake you up, and I
- 22:04didn't want to do that. It's very thoughtful of you. Dollar. Is
- 22:07there some place we can go and talk? Well, it's my room.
- 22:11Oh no, I mean when it wouldn't look right you know what? Oh
- 22:15yeah, well and how about over here? Looks like a nice quiet CRD.
- 22:21Yeah, this will do nicely, mister Dollar. Remember I told you
- 22:26about Madam Dassol. Yes, I remember that. Would you like to sit
- 22:30down? Oh no, I'm too excited to see. Excited about what well
- 22:33I've been trying to tell you about maddingdissol on what happened last night? What
- 22:37did happen? The conditions will write? I think that the conditions they will
- 22:44write. Remember I told you Madam was going to let this speak to Ruth
- 22:48when the conditions were right. Well they were last night. Oh well,
- 22:53aren't you interested in what we had to say? Oh? Yes, yes,
- 22:57I am missus Dick. She told me who killed her? Mister Dollar?
- 23:03What? Yes, just as Layne I heard it from Ruth, And
- 23:07there's no doubt about it. It was her vones, all right, Missus
- 23:10Dixon. Exactly what did Ruth say about the person who murdered her? Oh,
- 23:14Ruth described her to a teach her. She said it was a woman,
- 23:18young, dark hair, brown eyes, and a big red scar on
- 23:22the back of her left hand. I see you seem disappointed, mister dol
- 23:30I guess I was doing a little wishful thinking, Missus Dixon. Well,
- 23:33wishful thinking or not. Ruth told me who it was that killed her or
- 23:37her name too, Well, she didn't know her name, but what big
- 23:41red scar. Now you find a woman who has a thing like that on
- 23:45the back of her left hand, and you will have the guilty party.
- 23:49Yes, well, I'll look for someone like that today, Missus Dixon.
- 23:53Now come on, I'll buy you some breakfast. An hour later, back
- 24:02in my room, I put in a call to Captain Lewis Johnny wanting Pete
- 24:07anything new. Well, we heard from the Augusta police. Yeah, Sam
- 24:11Hood's and Augusta all right, been there for over a week. Uh huh
- 24:14Did they ask him if he knew the Mason? Girl said? Hee did?
- 24:17Said the Mason's huge let him and his brother serve as a cruiser.
- 24:19Uh huh, Johnny, when are you gonna stop playing games and tell me
- 24:25your idea? Hunts you mean, Pete, And I'll tell you just as
- 24:29soon as I get back from the library. Library. And while you're waiting.
- 24:32Called back to the Augusta police. Have them get hold of sam Hood
- 24:34again? What for? Ask him who named his boat? Why? Yeah,
- 24:40ask him if it was his idea the name of the Conomoar or his
- 24:42brother? Johnny? Are you feeling all right? I ever felt better,
- 24:45and I'm seeing About an hour. I found what I was looking for in
- 24:52the library, then went back to Captain Lewis's office and told him what I
- 24:55was now beginning to believe. While I was there, sam Hood called from
- 24:59Augusta with the answer the question the police had asked him. Then I went
- 25:02along down to the wharf on biking beach. Roy Hood was spoiled lazily over
- 25:07the deck of the Economoir, trying to sleep and at the same time keep
- 25:11an eye on a fishing line he tossed over the side. I started down
- 25:15the steps toward the boat well door fall. I damn the don dam morning
- 25:21leroy man. I sure didn't think you'd be back down here so soon.
- 25:25You don't Sammy back it? Yeah, I know you haven't any luck.
- 25:29No, no, no, just make him believe a real pasion. You
- 25:33got to go out beyond Gooseberry Island. How about taking me someday? Why?
- 25:37Sure, man, you just say the hood and we'll go right now.
- 25:40No, no, I'm afraid I couldn't do that this morning, Leroy.
- 25:42Well you just livedn't know any time? Yeah? How fast this boat
- 25:47cruise? Twenty five? Nuts? I ain't had some fastest boat queen here
- 25:51in the Navy station. How long would it take you to get over to
- 25:53the Mason Horman back again? Why? I wouldn't take no time at all?
- 25:57I come, yes, that did you know Dlamation was shot last night?
- 26:02Heard something about it? Yeah? Do you know Dlamation? Leroy?
- 26:07How could I know somebody? I said? I don't know. But if
- 26:11you didn't know her, why did you try to kill her last night?
- 26:15You're joking all? Not a bet? Oh? Come on now, man,
- 26:19what do you mean I tried to kill her last night? That's what
- 26:22I said. That ain't funny. They didn't want diffunny, But it's the
- 26:25truth, isn't it the truth? Now? Who told you that? Dollar?
- 26:30What? But she couldn't No, why not calls the paper Station's still
- 26:34unconscious. Besides, she couldn't see nobody around that Boo High. Last night
- 26:38was too dark because it was the night she killed Ruth Dixon. You know
- 26:42you beginning to get me riled. Dollars. It's your soul coming around,
- 26:47even all kinds of last thing. And I killed Ruth Dixon. I didn't
- 26:49said your brother, did Sam? Oh Man? Now you really lying?
- 26:57Sam's in Augusta. You ain't. He talked to him on the fall this
- 27:00morning. He told us about you and Ruth Dixon and the Mason girl and
- 27:03every other woman who comes around here. Well, just because I try to
- 27:07make a little time with him, I don't mean not killed nobody. Sam
- 27:11told us different, Leroy. He told us that you can't stand to have
- 27:15a woman laugh at you. Every time a girl has, You've tried your
- 27:18best to make a sorry for it. He really you really did talk to
- 27:23see him? What do you think? Why would you tell on me?
- 27:30Why he never has before? He didn't want to lee Roy. That's why
- 27:33I left here when he did. He needed time to think decide what to
- 27:37do about his brother. About you? What's gonna do about it? What
- 27:42I have to do? Take you in? No nobody taking me inwhere I
- 27:48don't want to go anybody? All right? Where I come out of there?
- 27:56You've got to go past off at me? Where I come back?
- 28:07Johnny? You all right? Oh yeah, I'm just fine, Come on
- 28:14all over. Yeah, Captain, I know, tell me something. If
- 28:23I can, we'll put you onto him in the first place. Two things,
- 28:27you see, he liked the girls, wanted to be a lady killer,
- 28:32but they only laugh at him, and he couldn't stand that, I
- 28:34see. But the big thing is what he named this boat. I don't
- 28:41get it. Oh, man like Leroy, not much education. He'd have
- 28:44to have a real reason for wanting to name it that. But why what's
- 28:48so special about that? You ever hear of Bluebeard? Lady killer? Sure
- 28:52well, Conomore was his real name. I saw Missus Dixon late that same
- 29:03afternoon. I'm afraid she was a fit disillusion, having been so sure that
- 29:08the person who had killed her daughter was a woman. But there was one
- 29:14funny thing on the back of LeRoy's left hand, with a long red scar.
- 29:22Expense account total including car rental Hotel Billin transportation back to Hydred nine hundred
- 29:26and sixty eight dollars and twenty cents. Yours truly, Johnny Dollar. Now
- 29:45here is our star. I'll tell you about next week's story next week,
- 29:48a case that couldn't be solved because there was no solution and yet, well,
- 29:56join us, won't you? Yours truly Johnny Dollar, Yours Truly,
- 30:11Johnny Dollars, starring Bob Bailey, originates in Hollywood, written by Charles B.
- 30:17Smith and is produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard an ourcast where
- 30:22Gene Tatum, Jeanette Nolan, Frank Nelson, Russell Thorson, Sam Edwards and
- 30:26Austin Green. Musical supervision is by Americo Marino. Be sure to join us
- 30:32next week, same time and station for another exciting story of Yours Truly,
- 30:37Johnny Dollars. This is Dan Cobberly speaking, welcome back. Well, there
- 31:11are a couple of ways to look at the setup for this episode. The
- 31:15first, and I'll just say the one I wouldn't subscribe to, is the
- 31:19idea that this is it's a bit of a plot hole or plot a problem
- 31:25for Johnny to be taken on this particular case. Because there's simply no reason
- 31:30for him to be there. The police reasonably, if they ran into any
- 31:36questions, they could call him, And indeed, in the course of this
- 31:38investigation, nothing that Johnny learned in the course of the Mason mismatch matter was
- 31:45any help at all in solving this case, and the police could have solved
- 31:51it themselves. I would tend to look at it as a somewhat realistic bit
- 31:57of unreasonableness, because I think we all have had points in our lives and
- 32:04people in our lives who have responded to things unreasonably for whatever reason. You
- 32:10might imagine a police officer looking who is having a time on an investigation,
- 32:15looking for escapegoat, why didn't that dollar guy stay around, which in turn
- 32:20leads to an unreasonable demand by the insurance company. And sometimes you have to
- 32:24do things to place unreasonable people that really it's nothing that you actually did wrong.
- 32:31I said before, nothing Johnny did in the Mason Dixon mismatch matter was
- 32:37inappropriate, And certainly we've heard detectives act in ways that policemen could legitimately complain
- 32:43about, but not Johnny in that case. In some ways, having to
- 32:46go through something like that makes him relatable. The fact that he gets a
- 32:52very generous expense account for it, and that he gives them notice in advance
- 32:57it's going to be patted and they're going to pay it. It makes him
- 33:00the hero that we can identify with. I thought it was a really sad
- 33:04thing in the episode with Missus Dixon there in just a good dramatic touch.
- 33:08It didn't have anything to do with the mystery, but it did fight a
- 33:14human moment. The brother was a somewhat obvious killer, or at least suspect
- 33:20from his introduction. Just his general way of acting was a little was a
- 33:24little creepy in portraying that character. Well, the solution was clever and I
- 33:30liked how Johnny managed that clue. All right, Well, now we turned
- 33:35to some listener comments and feedback, and we start with some feedback on the
- 33:45loss of memory matter. Joel says, this is a very different episode.
- 33:50I'm miss meant feeling uncomfortable hearing Johnny sound so vulnerable after the accident. He
- 33:55is rarely not the guy in charge. I was a bit puzzled at the
- 33:59end. I'll die in the fall down the ravine or was he just injured
- 34:04and went to jail. Well, Joel, I was actually a little unclear
- 34:07on the last point, and I consulted my ever handy guid by John Abbott,
- 34:14who is Johnny Dollar matter and on loss of memory. His report again,
- 34:21his report actually was based just on reading the script so hadn't even heard
- 34:27the episode. Is that Johnny gets the money back to Alvin and Alfred is
- 34:30arrested, and so that is what actually happened. It was actually a little
- 34:37unclear in the performance, but according to the original script, he just got
- 34:40arrested. As to discomfort, I can definitely hear you because our hero is
- 34:46not quite in charge or with that same zest, which is a little discomforting.
- 34:52But it's well done and I think it was a It was a solid
- 34:58change. Not something I want to see happen and every week, but sometimes
- 35:01it's good to shake us up a bit. So thanks so much for the
- 35:05comment, Joel. Judy said, just listen to this one this morning.
- 35:08These are so much fun. And Linda says, makes you wonder how many
- 35:13concussions one guy can take. Seem to be a common plant device in many
- 35:17of these shows. And that's true enough, Linda, because I think that
- 35:28it really is one of those points you have to suspend disbelief about about particularly
- 35:36the hard boiled shows. Someone like Nick Carter might take a blower to,
- 35:39you know, every few months, but most of the hard boiled private eyes
- 35:45generally they're going to get that blow on the head, and on average about
- 35:49every other week every week if you're Pat Novak. And when you have that
- 35:53thirty nine or fifty two weeks a year, that's a lot of concussion.
- 35:58But again, that calls for all friend's suspension of disbelief so that we can
- 36:02let our writers knock our heroes out. The Paulot can progress. We have
- 36:07also some comments on the on The Emily Braddock Matter episode thirteen sixty six,
- 36:20and a comment from Bobby Lee says, I agree with you, Adam.
- 36:29I did not like Johnny's last nine. I don't think it was true Johnny
- 36:34Doller. But not everybody agree with that. Actually, Mark wrote a pretty
- 36:39strong letter saying I'm about a week behind at this point and thus just thus
- 36:45just finished listening to the previously missing episode of Yours Truly Johnny Doller entitled the
- 36:51Emily Braddock Matter. Well, I don't mean to tell you what you should
- 36:54like and what you shouldn't. I felt the vitriol hurled that this episode was
- 37:00way over the top. Did someone kill your kitten that morning or something?
- 37:04The episode, while perhaps not a classic, was a perfectly adequate episode,
- 37:08and being more in the procedural vein as John Lone episodes tended to be,
- 37:14the lack of a twist ending was a rather unfair point to be used as
- 37:16a particular criticism against it. Even if that wasn't the case. The way
- 37:20you layered insult upon insult over this episode was simply too much. Criticism is
- 37:24one thing, but this was simply hateful and I expect better out of this
- 37:29Otherwise fine show. Well, thanks so much for your comment. Mark.
- 37:32After hearing your re reading your email, I actually went and re listened to
- 37:37the commentary. I went on for about two minutes. I want to say
- 37:42that owners are free to have a different opinion than I do, and if
- 37:46you enjoyed the Emily Braddock matter, certainly don't mean to belittle Land. And
- 37:51as I said at the time, I think one of the reasons for my
- 37:54disappointment with that is that a much better episode with Bob Bailey was based on
- 38:01it, and I was expecting more and if I hadn't been expecting more,
- 38:06I might not have been as disappointed. That said, I really didn't feel
- 38:09my comments were hateful or vitriolic. Certainly I didn't get into any like renting
- 38:15screaming sort of voice, which is always good. I can do that on
- 38:20my political podcast, don't really do that on old time radio. I think
- 38:22I remained in good humor. But even taking into account that this was a
- 38:29more procedural episode, I still feel that it was a disappointment. It's not
- 38:34just that there wasn't a twist ending, it's that there wasn't a twist anything
- 38:37in that episode. Even with a lot of the procedural episodes, usually they'll
- 38:43begin with an open question of some sort that needs to be resolved. Within
- 38:47the first five minutes of the episode, we knew everything about the Emily Braddock
- 38:52matter that we were ever going to know. After nearly half an hour,
- 38:58we really didn't have any more insights into her character. There wasn't a whole
- 39:02lot that was particularly interesting or clever about the investigation or her capture. So
- 39:09I didn't get a whole lot out of the episode. And to be clear,
- 39:13I have the utmost respect for the work of John Lunn on the series,
- 39:16and I respect the John Lunn era for what it was and think that
- 39:22there were some strong stories and some good episodes. I just felt the Emily
- 39:27Braddock matter was below par for the era. But I do appreciate your comment,
- 39:32and I should also say, who knows if I might have a different
- 39:37impression of the episode if we go through Johnny Dowler again and I go through
- 39:42that episode in its proper order. But for now, that's kind of where
- 39:46I stand. But thanks so much for writing in all right. Well,
- 39:50another listener comment, this one from Facebook. Dave Taylor comments, Adam,
- 39:57you're mention of a science fiction take on John Maybe wonder if you were familiar
- 40:01with InterPlaNet Terry Insurance Incorporated, a short lived comic strip published by DC in
- 40:07the mid nineteen fifties. Story Summon at least can be found here, and
- 40:15it's actually a pretty interesting concept. Links out to a website Dave Xmachina dot
- 40:27com and has summaries of this idea of a space age insurance investigator, and
- 40:36it appeared in the DC comics series Mystery and Space from issue sixteen to issue
- 40:45twenty five. Some interesting pictures and concepts. I'm not familiar with the strip.
- 40:51It's unfortunate that DC hasn't released a collection of it's of that particular series.
- 41:00I know that they have done that with the other their nineteen fifties science
- 41:07fiction series Strange Adventures, and they've done two volumes of that one. But
- 41:12yeah, I would love to somehow get a hold of of Missed stream Space
- 41:17and the Interplanetary Insurance and Corporation with Bert Brandon their Agent series. Did it
- 41:23first appear in nineteen fifty three, So if it was inspired by Johnny Doller,
- 41:30wasn't the Bob Bailey version. Well that'll do it for today. In
