- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst.
- 0:22Speaker 3: We're laughing because we just had to kick Tony Reale
- 0:25Speaker 3: out from right in front of the camera.
- 0:27Speaker 2: But we're all tired. Long football weekend. Teammate check. How'd
- 0:30Speaker 2: you do, Paul?
- 0:30Speaker 4: Pretty good. 13 hours of college football on Saturday. Another
- 0:33Speaker 4: 12 on Sunday. I don't know how much sleep last night,
- 0:36Speaker 4: but who cares? A lot of football. We're here for it.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Yeah, so an incredible week one. They're about to set
- 0:41Speaker 3: the scoring record unless the Chiefs and Broncos do nothing tonight.
- 0:45Speaker 3: They are about 41 points away from the highest scoring
- 0:48Speaker 3: week one in NFL history, Paul.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Break it down.
- 0:50Speaker 3: All right.
- 0:51Speaker 4: So the Bears have 59. Ravens, 41. Jags, 34. Bengals, 33. Lions,
- 0:57Speaker 4: 31-30 over the Saints.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Bills, 36-31.
- 1:00Speaker 4: The Vikings are the third-string quarterback to score 39. The
- 1:04Speaker 4: Giants score 28. And then here's what's funny about this, Perloff.
- 1:07Speaker 4: Go back to last week.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:09Speaker 4: The Seahawks and Patriots score 13 and 10 and the
- 1:12Speaker 4: Rams only score seven.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Unbelievable that the Rams are the one single digit team.
- 1:17Speaker 4: Okay. So we're in week one. We see all this scoring.
- 1:19Speaker 4: There's Josh Allen. Of course he's going to score. Is
- 1:21Speaker 4: this an anomaly or can you extrapolate a trend out
- 1:25Speaker 4: of this, this early?
- 1:26Speaker 2: To me, it's an anomaly. Week one is a liver.
- 1:29Speaker 3: It never means exactly what you think it is, but
- 1:32Speaker 3: some of the reasons that the games were so high
- 1:34Speaker 3: scoring was turnovers cause a lot of points. And then
- 1:37Speaker 3: the one game that sort of lit it all up
- 1:39Speaker 3: was the Bears and the Panthers, 59-37.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Part of the reason that went so high scoring.
- 1:45Speaker 3: This piece of Bears defense let the Panthers stay in
- 1:47Speaker 3: the game.
- 1:48Speaker 2: The Bears were blowing them out. So the Bears had
- 1:50Speaker 2: to keep their foot on the gas.
- 1:51Speaker 4: And Kevin Clark from Omaha Productions, he was joining the
- 1:56Speaker 4: Dan Patch show today, and he talked about this. And
- 1:58Speaker 4: he said something about, you know, the defenses are playing catch-up.
- 2:00Speaker 4: A lot of new players, new quarterbacks, new systems, free agency.
- 2:04Speaker 4: So they don't know exactly what to get to.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Little shocking that the Texans defense, which we've been talking
- 2:09Speaker 3: about for months— Completely fell apart. It looked like Josh Allen,
- 2:13Speaker 3: by the end, could do whatever he wanted. That, to me,
- 2:16Speaker 3: was the biggest surprise. But again, week one does not
- 2:19Speaker 3: mean what we think it does. I mean, the Bears
- 2:21Speaker 3: are not going to score 59 points a week, are they?
- 2:24Speaker 4: No, they usually don't score 59 points in a month,
- 2:26Speaker 4: like in the old Bears days. But there's a lot
- 2:29Speaker 4: of teams that are interesting. The Vikings, Packers, that's nuts
- 2:31Speaker 4: because you think... Once Kyler Murray's out, the scoring's going
- 2:34Speaker 4: to go down.
- 2:35Speaker 2: I mean, come on.
- 2:35Speaker 5: It is.
- 2:36Speaker 3: There is no way the Vikings or the Bears play
- 2:38Speaker 3: in Week 2. We're not going to see games in
- 2:40Speaker 3: the 30s or 40s.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I think it's a anomaly.
- 2:43Speaker 4: So you're poo-pooing the possible trend.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I am completely poo-pooing, and I'm starting with your Bears.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I like the Bears a lot this year.
- 2:49Speaker 3: They do not want to score 59 points. Ben Johnson
- 2:52Speaker 3: wants to run left and run right because he's got
- 2:54Speaker 3: to protect that defense.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I'll bet you anything, Paul. I'm going to go out
- 2:57Speaker 2: on a limb here. that they go under next week.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I'm positive they're going to go under, whatever the total is.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So you're going to say they're going to undercompensate, not overcompensate.
- 3:05Speaker 3: They're going to undercompensate, and they love to run the ball.
- 3:08Speaker 3: They had two runners over 100 yards on Sunday.
- 3:11Speaker 4: But it was a fun weekend. At least it's fun
- 3:12Speaker 4: for all the fans. A lot of scoring, a lot
- 3:14Speaker 4: of energy.
- 3:15Speaker 3: I think so, right, unless you're a Chargers fan. There
- 3:19Speaker 3: are a lot of, you know, listen, there's the flip side.
- 3:21Speaker 3: There are a lot of teams that did not do well,
- 3:23Speaker 3: but to me, there are certain fan bases that are
- 3:26Speaker 3: completely over the moon, starting with Chicago. But Tony kept
- 3:28Speaker 3: on talking about it on the Dan Patrick show.
- 3:30Speaker 2: You were a little bit, I'm not going to say timid.
- 3:34Speaker 4: I'm going to save this for my warm take because
- 3:35Speaker 4: I want to talk about Sunday Night Football, but I'm
- 3:37Speaker 4: going to save Bears football. break pumping for my warm take.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Well, that's a game, by the way, Sunday Night Football,
- 3:42Speaker 3: where there is no break pumping in New York because the.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Giants are back.
- 3:46Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know what this means, but the
- 3:49Speaker 3: Giants look like they have it figured out and the
- 3:51Speaker 3: Cowboys were disappointing. I'll tell you right now, the reason
- 3:54Speaker 3: I think the Giants are back, I think Jackson Dart is...
- 3:56Speaker 3: Between 5 and 10 in the quarterback rankings.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I think he's elite.
- 4:00Speaker 3: I'm going there, Paul. I think he looked like Joe
- 4:02Speaker 3: Burrow on Sunday night. He was incredible on third down.
- 4:06Speaker 3: I'm dead serious.
- 4:07Speaker 2: I'm dead serious.
- 4:09Speaker 3: The team was 9 of 11 on third down, and
- 4:12Speaker 3: he looked like he could do whatever he wanted.
- 4:14Speaker 2: They had the running game going with Scadaboo.
- 4:16Speaker 3: The Dallas Cowboys only got the ball twice in the
- 4:19Speaker 3: second half. It was a domination. It was a ball
- 4:22Speaker 3: control domination. Isaiah likely turns out to be a star
- 4:25Speaker 3: at tight end. But I was really impressed by Jackson
- 4:29Speaker 3: Dart's poise.
- 4:30Speaker 4: OK, I got to call a 20 here. I'm going
- 4:32Speaker 4: to need to chop up everything you just said. First
- 4:33Speaker 4: of all, Scataboo, no more round off things. This is
- 4:36Speaker 4: not the Olympics. You're not Romanian. Here we go. I
- 4:39Speaker 4: know what you're saying about Jackson Dart because I agree
- 4:41Speaker 4: with you. I thought he was great in college. I
- 4:43Speaker 4: loved him last year, but he just took on too
- 4:45Speaker 4: much hits. There was a play in the second quarter
- 4:47Speaker 4: where Dart rolls left. He's run for about 15 yards
- 4:50Speaker 4: and could have gotten another five yards, and he casually
- 4:52Speaker 4: walks out of bounds. And you hear Chris Collinsworth on
- 4:54Speaker 4: NBC go, oh, that's it. That's it. Like he finally
- 4:57Speaker 4: unlocked the box. I will say, though, I was not
- 5:00Speaker 4: that surprised by this game because Dallas has a revamped
- 5:03Speaker 4: defense with some new characters. Sean Gary. That takes time
- 5:07Speaker 4: to play out.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Wait, we're analyzing NFL Week 1. Don't give me time
- 5:11Speaker 3: to play out. We have to overreact here, Paul.
- 5:13Speaker 4: I'm going to do proper reaction Monday here. I love
- 5:16Speaker 4: what the Giants did. They ran the ball well. Malik Nabors,
- 5:18Speaker 4: there was some talk that he wouldn't be ready for
- 5:20Speaker 4: the game up until three hours before the game started.
- 5:22Speaker 4: But look at them last night. 5.8 yards per play.
- 5:25Speaker 4: 9 for 11 on third down. That's a quarterback who
- 5:28Speaker 4: gets it. And Jackson Dart, if he could just cut
- 5:30Speaker 4: down his hits... I think he ran the ball 11 times.
- 5:33Speaker 4: That's a little much for me. But he's good at running.
- 5:35Speaker 4: That's the tough part.
- 5:36Speaker 3: Yeah, no, and he had some key first downs with
- 5:38Speaker 3: his legs. Again, I'm ready to.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Say the word. I'll say it. Elite.
- 5:42Speaker 4: But you, when we were talking about the Giants a
- 5:44Speaker 4: month ago, you said, don't worry about the Giants. They're inconsequential.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Are you falling for your own stuff here?
- 5:49Speaker 3: I'm totally falling for my own hype. And you didn't
- 5:51Speaker 3: even really get to see that defensive line with Abdul
- 5:54Speaker 3: Carter and now Arvel Risa, linebacker, Kayvon Thibodeau, and Ryan Burns,
- 5:58Speaker 3: who's outstanding.
- 5:59Speaker 4: They had no sacks yesterday, but they were in the
- 6:01Speaker 4: backfield a lot.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Abdul Carter had a big play that disrupted the Cowboys' offense.
- 6:05Speaker 4: Okay, let's get to the Cowboys' side of this. I
- 6:07Speaker 4: would be a little more bothered about the offense was
- 6:09Speaker 4: supposed to be the sure thing this year. They ran
- 6:12Speaker 4: the ball okay. They passed the ball okay. But okay
- 6:15Speaker 4: won't work when you have an average defense.
- 6:17Speaker 3: You can't pass the ball or run the ball when
- 6:19Speaker 3: you're on defense all the time. Dak was really, really good.
- 6:22Speaker 3: There were a couple drops. I'm not worried about their
- 6:24Speaker 3: offense at all. I am so disappointed in their defense, Paul.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Because remember the narrative that Jerry Jones had made up
- 6:30Speaker 3: for the bad Micah Parsons trade by getting all these
- 6:32Speaker 3: defensive tackles and they.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Were going to stop the run? What happened to that?
- 6:35Speaker 4: Yeah, and the bigger picture with the Cowboys, I think,
- 6:37Speaker 4: whatever you think of their offense or their defense... They
- 6:39Speaker 4: don't feel like a big game team for me. The
- 6:41Speaker 4: bigger the game, the less they show up. And that's been,
- 6:44Speaker 4: we're a couple decades into that now. I mean, I'm
- 6:47Speaker 4: not an anti-Cowboys guy. I just think that they don't
- 6:49Speaker 4: perform well under the biggest of lights. And you'd think
- 6:51Speaker 4: they're used to the lights.
- 6:53Speaker 3: There was so much hype, too. And I fell into it.
- 6:55Speaker 3: I picked them to win the NFC East. Did that
- 6:58Speaker 3: make the whole experience of watching them lose and lose
- 7:00Speaker 3: pretty badly even harder for Cowboys fans?
- 7:03Speaker 4: It does.
- 7:03Speaker 2: It does.
- 7:03Speaker 4: All right, we're going to get some college football in
- 7:05Speaker 4: a second, but week one NFL, we didn't talk about
- 7:07Speaker 4: the teams that were hurting, like the Dolphins and maybe
- 7:10Speaker 4: the Packers, but it's time to give out helmet stickers.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Who had a good game, who had a great performance,
- 7:14Speaker 4: you go first.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Okay, my first helmet sticker actually goes to Baltimore, and
- 7:18Speaker 3: you'd think I was talking about Lamar Jackson.
- 7:20Speaker 2: No, I'm talking about Zay Flowers, a wide receiver.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Had 150 yards receiving that went out with a hamstring injury,
- 7:25Speaker 3: one that he's been dealing with.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Not too bad, though.
- 7:28Speaker 3: The reason I'm giving Zay Flowers the helmet sticker is
- 7:31Speaker 3: because I thought he was the most overpaid wide receiver
- 7:33Speaker 3: in football. When he got $ 35 million in the offseason,
- 7:36Speaker 3: then he goes out against Week 1 and Indy, and
- 7:38Speaker 3: the entire Baltimore offense was dominant, and he was unbelievable.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I took a long one to the house. Zay Flowers
- 7:45Speaker 3: is a top-tier receiver.
- 7:46Speaker 2: I was totally wrong about that.
- 7:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think he's ever going to get in
- 7:49Speaker 4: that conversation with Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson. For that team,
- 7:52Speaker 4: he does exactly what they need. Not a big dude, but, man,
- 7:55Speaker 4: he can get up the field.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Oh, he can scoot.
- 7:56Speaker 4: I pulled a hamstring just watching him on that play.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a little worried about this hamstring.
- 8:00Speaker 3: They said if it was a playoff game, he could
- 8:02Speaker 3: have gone back into the game against Indy. But the
- 8:05Speaker 3: way Lamar Jackson played on Sunday and with Flowers and
- 8:08Speaker 3: a bunch of other weapons, Derrick Henry looks like he's 25.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I think this offense is going to be one of
- 8:13Speaker 2: the stories of the year.
- 8:14Speaker 4: When the Ravens are at the goal line at the
- 8:15Speaker 4: 5-yard line, they run that read option with Derrick Henry
- 8:18Speaker 4: and Lamar Jackson. I don't know how you stop that.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Good luck.
- 8:21Speaker 4: All right, it's time for my helmet sticker. I'm going
- 8:22Speaker 4: to give my helmet sticker to T.J. Watt of the Steelers.
- 8:26Speaker 4: His first career touchdown. This is a play. This is
- 8:29Speaker 4: kind of like Jefferson in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
- 8:31Speaker 4: He just ate it alive. He picked, ran it back
- 8:33Speaker 4: to the house. Unbelievable play by T.J.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Watt.
- 8:36Speaker 4: And his brother. I was almost going to give J.J.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Watt a helmet sticker as well. But first career touchdown.
- 8:40Speaker 4: Watch this here. Right here.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Eat it up.
- 8:43Speaker 4: I'll just take that.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 4: That looks like something out of a high school game.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and they didn't even get him when he was
- 8:47Speaker 2: on the ground. I did hear, was this his first touchdown?
- 8:50Speaker 4: First career touchdown. That's not very wattish.
- 8:53Speaker 3: But he has 10 picks, I also heard, in his career.
- 8:55Speaker 3: They said that during the game, which is unbelievable. I
- 8:58Speaker 3: actually want to bring up a sensitive topic.
- 9:00Speaker 4: Uh-oh.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You are a friend of J.J. Watt's.
- 9:03Speaker 4: Friend of Justin, yeah.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Is it possible that T.J. is going to end up
- 9:07Speaker 2: having a better career.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Than J.J.? You know, I think that's an interesting one.
- 9:10Speaker 4: We're going to have to maybe save that.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I hit you with that out of nowhere.
- 9:13Speaker 4: But let's tease that for tomorrow, who will have a
- 9:16Speaker 4: better career.
- 9:17Speaker 2: T.J.
- 9:17Speaker 4: Watt has a little more consistency past the age of 27.
- 9:20Speaker 4: After the age of 27, J.J. Watt, injuries kind of
- 9:23Speaker 4: slowed him down, so... More consistency. I would say better
- 9:27Speaker 4: at their best, JJ.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Ooh, I don't know.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Because TJ, when he's not there, the Steelers can't win
- 9:32Speaker 3: a game.
- 9:33Speaker 2: So to me, I'm leaning TJ. But we'll save that
- 9:36Speaker 2: for tomorrow. We can get the audience involved as well.
- 9:38Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 9:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Saturday night, college football, the game of the year, even
- 9:42Speaker 4: though it's only the first two weeks of the year.
- 9:43Speaker 4: It was Ohio State versus Texas. Game day is there.
- 9:46Speaker 4: McConaughey is there. Woody Harrelson is there. The Manning family
- 9:49Speaker 4: is there. And Ohio State was running things for the
- 9:52Speaker 4: entire first quarter, for the entire first half. It's 23
- 9:55Speaker 4: at halftime and you're trying to figure out a reason
- 9:57Speaker 4: to stay with this game. And then it was like
- 9:59Speaker 4: one of those body-switching movies where everything Ohio State did
- 10:03Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter was wrong and everything Texas did
- 10:05Speaker 4: was right.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Well, Arch Manning struggled in the first half, but to
- 10:09Speaker 3: me it was on the drops.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Totally.
- 10:11Speaker 3: It was a Ryan Wingo drop and a Cam Coleman
- 10:13Speaker 3: drop on a hard play that.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Ended up being an interception of total fluke play.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Fluke play.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Fluke play. I didn't think Arch was playing badly.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Then Arch started to push a little bit, probably made
- 10:23Speaker 3: some throws that were ill-advised.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I thought Arch looked okay.
- 10:26Speaker 3: And then the rest of the team caught up with him.
- 10:29Speaker 3: So I was not shocked that Texas came back.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Same here. You and I are texting during this game,
- 10:33Speaker 4: watching the different games. And at halftime, I said, Texas
- 10:36Speaker 4: is a little closer than 20-3. They can't have this
- 10:38Speaker 4: many dismantling things. But that fourth quarter, gutsy Sark calls
- 10:43Speaker 4: on fourth down. Arch getting it done.
- 10:46Speaker 2: They did it.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And it's like you've talked about before. Some teams step
- 10:50Speaker 4: off the gas when they've got to hit it. Julian
- 10:52Speaker 4: Sane could have hit a touchdown to close that one out.
- 10:55Speaker 4: about a foot high, and that cost him the game.
- 10:57Speaker 4: That's one of those games. Stat-wise, Arch Manning, not great. Performance-wise, great.
- 11:03Speaker 3: I would say good, because he definitely was not great
- 11:05Speaker 3: in the first half. Definitely clutch. Ohio State missed a
- 11:08Speaker 3: field goal. That was a total killer as well.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Before we break, who would you rather stand next to
- 11:13Speaker 4: on the sidelines during a big Texas game? Kevin Durant,
- 11:16Speaker 4: Matt McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, or any Manning family member?
- 11:20Speaker 2: All right, all right. It's got to be McConaughey, right?
- 11:22Speaker 4: Yeah, because of the after party?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Are you kidding me?
- 11:24Speaker 3: All right, coming up on Not So Fast, are you
- 11:27Speaker 3: all in on the Chicago Bears after yesterday's 8TD explosion? Paul,
- 11:31Speaker 3: I'm not so sure about it, even though he is
- 11:33Speaker 3: a Bears fan. That's next, Not So Fast.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Midday pick-me-up, Perloff. This is like a double shot of espresso.
- 11:40Speaker 4: Watch this guy. This is my guy, Commander Special Teamer
- 11:43Speaker 4: Tyler Owens. He became a star yesterday off this plate.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Look.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 11:46Speaker 4: Hand on the neck, hand on the neck. Watch this.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Lift and bango!
- 11:52Speaker 2: There is not a single thing to talk to about
- 11:54Speaker 2: the commanders. Except that play.
- 11:56Speaker 3: That was their only highlight of the game, basically.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Tyler Owens, that clip is getting all over the place.
- 12:01Speaker 4: He's becoming a star. Got banged up later. Commander's uniform's
- 12:04Speaker 4: a little better. A little clean up.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Maybe. But I don't know if Star, for that one play,
- 12:09Speaker 2: is he in NFL lore?
- 12:10Speaker 4: Not NFL lore, but special teams Monday morning social media lore.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Love it.
- 12:15Speaker 4: We'll take that. All right, it's time for Warm Takes.
- 12:17Speaker 4: We do it every day on Not So Fast on Pabst.
- 12:19Speaker 4: He's Perloff. My first warm take.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Are you ready?
- 12:21Speaker 4: Let me stretch out here, Pearl.
- 12:23Speaker 2: All right. It's a big one. First NFL Monday.
- 12:25Speaker 4: Shake it off. I'm going to speak today as a
- 12:28Speaker 4: representative of Bears Nation. I'm trying to be objective here.
- 12:31Speaker 4: But I've been working all night to try to say
- 12:33Speaker 4: the phrase, the Bears almost scored 60 week one of
- 12:36Speaker 4: the NFL season. It's not really working in my mind
- 12:39Speaker 4: and it won't really get to my mouth. It's like
- 12:41Speaker 4: I'm having a moment where I can't speak. And it
- 12:44Speaker 4: doesn't make sense to a Bears fan. If you're a
- 12:46Speaker 4: Bears fan, you've conditioned to scoring 17 points and trying
- 12:49Speaker 4: to steal a win or winning with defense. And I
- 12:52Speaker 4: know it's the Carolina Panthers, but they were not the
- 12:55Speaker 4: worst defensive team. They're bottom of the half. So it's
- 12:58Speaker 4: very confusing for a Bears fan to see this happen.
- 13:01Speaker 4: Bears fans are happy with 30 points, happy with 25 points.
- 13:04Speaker 4: So should you be a break pumper? I think everybody
- 13:08Speaker 4: week one should be a break pumper. What you see
- 13:09Speaker 4: week one is an anomaly. It doesn't usually hold up.
- 13:12Speaker 4: What usually happens the next week, the Bears would score
- 13:14Speaker 4: 17 in a battle and lose at the buzzer. And
- 13:17Speaker 4: that's what happens here. So While you have to be
- 13:19Speaker 4: excited and you have to see that offense, but Ben
- 13:21Speaker 4: Johnson said this in the preseason. He said, we want
- 13:23Speaker 4: to be the highest scoring offense in the league, and historically.
- 13:27Speaker 4: So he called his shot, and everyone was ready to jab.
- 13:29Speaker 4: The claws were out, the Packers media, all the different media.
- 13:33Speaker 4: But then you score 59, you leave everyone nowhere to go.
- 13:36Speaker 4: So Ben Johnson, he called his shot. Week one, we'll
- 13:38Speaker 4: see how it plays out.
- 13:39Speaker 3: A couple things. I am obviously a break pumper.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Am I rooting against your team because I don't want
- 13:44Speaker 3: you to come in here gloating on Monday morning?
- 13:46Speaker 2: Perhaps.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Understandable.
- 13:48Speaker 3: The Panthers were 14th in defense last year, but that's
- 13:50Speaker 3: in the NFC South.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So you sort of weight that.
- 13:52Speaker 4: You prorate that.
- 13:53Speaker 3: And two years ago, they let up 47 to the
- 13:56Speaker 3: Saints in week one. And then the Saints didn't score
- 13:59Speaker 3: 47 points the rest of the season. So the Panthers
- 14:01Speaker 3: might stink on defense. That is a big part of it.
- 14:03Speaker 4: But not 59 points stink.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Well, the thing is, the Bears let the Panthers back
- 14:08Speaker 3: in that game.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Bryce Young looked like Alabama Bryce Young. So the Bears
- 14:11Speaker 2: had to keep on.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Jacksonville could have scored 59 against Cleveland, but there was
- 14:14Speaker 3: no need to. They sort of took their foot off
- 14:16Speaker 3: the gas. So, again, I am definitely break pumping. And
- 14:20Speaker 3: I think week two against Minnesota, that's a much better test.
- 14:23Speaker 4: Yeah, the other thing is the Bears may need to
- 14:25Speaker 4: score 40-plus a game because the defense, for every pick
- 14:28Speaker 4: they get, they give up three touches.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm worried about the defense. I mean, listen, they
- 14:31Speaker 2: are going to be good. There's no doubt. You should
- 14:32Speaker 2: be excited.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Okay, I'm going to talk about a team that is
- 14:35Speaker 3: not excited at all, and that is in L.A., and
- 14:36Speaker 3: that is the Chargers. And I'm mad at the Chargers
- 14:39Speaker 3: for many reasons. I entered a huge survivor pool, and
- 14:43Speaker 3: I picked the Chargers to beat the Cardinals in Week 1.
- 14:46Speaker 2: I am officially out. They lost 26-14.
- 14:50Speaker 3: And all the things that Jim Harbaugh, the coach, said
- 14:53Speaker 3: in the preseason did not come true. He said that
- 14:56Speaker 3: Justin Herbert was not just going to be good, but
- 14:59Speaker 3: the greatest quarterback of all time.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Here's Harbaugh on Michael Irvin's podcast.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Allow me to call my shot like Babe Ruth pointing
- 15:05Speaker 3: his bat over a center field.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Justin Herbert, when it's all said and done.
- 15:08Speaker 3: When his career comes to an end, I predict he
- 15:10Speaker 3: will be known as the greatest, best ever to play
- 15:13Speaker 3: the position of quarterback.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Jim Harbaugh not mincing words there.
- 15:17Speaker 3: Mike McDaniel, the new offensive coordinator, was supposed to be
- 15:19Speaker 3: the wonder kid who was going to fix everything with
- 15:21Speaker 3: the Chargers offense. They looked terrible. The team looked terrible.
- 15:25Speaker 3: They were going against one of the worst defenses in
- 15:27Speaker 3: the NFL, the Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals beat them up,
- 15:30Speaker 3: dominated them in every phase of the game. Here's the
- 15:33Speaker 3: one YOLO shot they took at the end of the game,
- 15:36Speaker 3: and it did.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Not work out.
- 15:38Speaker 3: So the Chargers not only killed me in the survivor pool,
- 15:40Speaker 3: I'm down on the team. I'm completely overreacting on this
- 15:44Speaker 3: because Justin Herbert is not going to be the greatest
- 15:46Speaker 3: quarterback of all time. He's not going to challenge Joe
- 15:48Speaker 3: Montana and Tom Brady. He's okay, but he needs protection.
- 15:51Speaker 3: He has no weapons.
- 15:52Speaker 4: He's not even the best quarterback in Chargers' recent history.
- 15:55Speaker 4: I mean, I don't even have to go back to
- 15:56Speaker 4: Dan Fouts. I mean, Stan Humphreys had more success in
- 15:59Speaker 4: the playoffs. I mean, I think that's a fact. Now,
- 16:01Speaker 4: he doesn't look as good. But, yeah, the Chargers might
- 16:03Speaker 4: be underrated for how frustrating of a franchise they are.
- 16:06Speaker 4: Back in the day, Antonio Gates and Tomlinson, and they
- 16:08Speaker 4: have Breeze on the roster. You have Phil Rivers. And
- 16:11Speaker 4: this roster is very good. A very good defense. O'Marion Hampton. Now,
- 16:14Speaker 4: it's week one, but that's a team you're playing that
- 16:16Speaker 4: probably doesn't want to win. And they made Jacoby Brissett
- 16:19Speaker 4: look good. And it's a very frustrating franchise. Also, they're
- 16:22Speaker 4: like the hot girl who never shows up. Because they
- 16:25Speaker 4: look so good in their uniforms. Justin Herbert looks the
- 16:27Speaker 4: part of the WB star quarterback with great hair. And
- 16:31Speaker 4: Jim Harbaugh, he always wins. Like, historically.
- 16:35Speaker 2: Everywhere.
- 16:35Speaker 4: So it's even more frustrating because everything's in place.
- 16:38Speaker 3: By the way, it's very not so fast that you
- 16:40Speaker 3: went to Stan Humphreys and not Phillip Rivers.
- 16:42Speaker 2: Maybe a little more recent. I mean, okay.
- 16:44Speaker 4: I'm a deep cut guy. All right. Here's my next
- 16:47Speaker 4: warm take.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Here it is.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Oregon football got by Boise week one. No big deal.
- 16:51Speaker 4: Great second half. Dante Moore, Heisman candidate and a top
- 16:54Speaker 4: five draft pick supposedly for the NFL draft. That was
- 16:58Speaker 4: not so good. Oregon State last week lost to Tulsa
- 17:01Speaker 4: at home. And Tulsa is more of a basketball school.
- 17:05Speaker 4: Oklahoma State handled them. They beat them. It wasn't luck.
- 17:07Speaker 4: It wasn't a fluke. And Dante Moore did very little
- 17:10Speaker 4: in the second half to help Oregon get out of
- 17:12Speaker 4: this mess that they were in. Look, can they right
- 17:14Speaker 4: the ship? They're not out of the playoffs. There's a
- 17:16Speaker 4: long way to go. It's an ugly victory. Ugly loss,
- 17:19Speaker 4: I should say. The bigger picture is Oklahoma State. With
- 17:22Speaker 4: Drew Mestermaker, who was, I think, in the band four
- 17:24Speaker 4: years ago, and now is going to be in play
- 17:26Speaker 4: for the first round of the NFL draft. Dante Moore,
- 17:30Speaker 4: get it together. You came back for a reason. You
- 17:32Speaker 4: could have stayed in the draft and been a top
- 17:34Speaker 4: 20 pick.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Easy.
- 17:35Speaker 4: You came back for one reason, to win something, to
- 17:37Speaker 4: get to the playoffs. Don't let this happen. It is
- 17:40Speaker 4: on you. It's not on your coach. It's not on
- 17:41Speaker 4: everybody else. You're the guy. You want to be the guy.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Do the thing in the second half.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 17:46Speaker 3: You know, for fun, I went back to some preseason
- 17:48Speaker 3: mock drafts, Paul. Not everyone had Drew Mestermaker in the
- 17:50Speaker 3: first round, but the Athletics' Dane Brugler had a number
- 17:52Speaker 3: eight overall to the Steelers.
- 17:54Speaker 4: This guy was at North Texas last year.
- 17:55Speaker 5: I know.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Steelers, Drew Mestermaker, could he be the next Big Ben?
- 17:59Speaker 3: He's got a Big Ben quality to me. He's fast,
- 18:02Speaker 3: and he's got an arm.
- 18:02Speaker 4: Yeah, Mestermaker sounds like a Dutch name, and I think
- 18:05Speaker 4: that's big in Pennsylvania. I extrapolate, yeah. But they do
- 18:08Speaker 4: love Durella.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Get out of here. All right.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I'm willing to go back to the NFL here. Now,
- 18:15Speaker 3: there was some bad football on Sunday. People have been
- 18:17Speaker 3: talking about tanking possibly for Arch Manning. It was for
- 18:20Speaker 3: Dante Moore, but I agree with Paul. He might have
- 18:22Speaker 3: just absolutely gone off the radar for the NFL on Saturday.
- 18:26Speaker 3: But it's going to be really hard to tank this
- 18:28Speaker 3: year because there are some awful teams. You can look
- 18:30Speaker 3: at Cleveland. You look at Tennessee, and you look at Miami. Now,
- 18:34Speaker 3: two of those teams definitely need a quarterback. Miami with
- 18:37Speaker 3: Malik Willis, he looked okay, but they're going to be
- 18:40Speaker 3: in the mix. Deshaun Watson was terrible. That was play
- 18:43Speaker 3: one right there.
- 18:44Speaker 2: He was awful.
- 18:46Speaker 3: And I do not know what the Tennessee Titans are doing.
- 18:48Speaker 3: New coach Robert Sala did not have control of this game.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Cam Ward does not look good. It wasn't really his
- 18:54Speaker 3: fault because there's no talent around him. But, Paul, let
- 18:56Speaker 3: me give you some numbers here. Tennessee just had 195
- 18:59Speaker 3: total yards in the game against the Jets. Cleveland was
- 19:01Speaker 3: down 24-0 at halftime, then down 34-3.
- 19:04Speaker 2: The Dolphins, 2-for-10 on third down. There's so many ugly statistics.
- 19:09Speaker 2: But I don't know. If you want the number one
- 19:11Speaker 2: pick this year, you're going to really have to work
- 19:12Speaker 2: for it. I think you might have a one-win team.
- 19:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really ugly. And Cam Ward, at the end
- 19:16Speaker 4: of last season, seemed to be picking it up a
- 19:18Speaker 4: little bit. We felt good about the offseason. The Cleveland Browns,
- 19:21Speaker 4: we said we liked the team's direction. You trade Miles Garrett,
- 19:23Speaker 4: which you don't want to do, but you kind of
- 19:25Speaker 4: had to.
- 19:26Speaker 2: But that's a move for the future.
- 19:27Speaker 4: It is for the future, but their presence seems so
- 19:29Speaker 4: dark and ugly. And then the Miami Dolphins, I looked
- 19:32Speaker 4: at their wide receiver depth chart yesterday. I didn't know
- 19:34Speaker 4: any names. I thought they were friends of mine from college.
- 19:36Speaker 3: No, the wide receiver depth chart is one of the
- 19:38Speaker 3: funniest things ever. I mean, Malik Willis, I think, has
- 19:41Speaker 3: some talent. I feel really bad for him. Came over
- 19:43Speaker 3: from Green Bay. But they're looking toward the future as well.
- 19:46Speaker 3: They're definitely going to draft a quarterback. To me, the
- 19:48Speaker 3: interesting thing, what about 10 What if Cam Ward struggles
- 19:51Speaker 3: all season and they end up with a one or
- 19:52Speaker 3: two pick? There's going to be some great quarterbacks. Do
- 19:55Speaker 3: they give up on last year's number one overall?
- 19:57Speaker 4: Because they gave up on Malik Willis. They gave up
- 19:59Speaker 4: on your boy from Kentucky.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Will Levis. Will Levis.
- 20:01Speaker 4: And they're going to do it again. It's like no consistency.
- 20:04Speaker 2: But the number one overall to give up on him
- 20:06Speaker 2: that fast, that's tough. All right.
- 20:07Speaker 4: That's it. Oh, we got a little Who Said It
- 20:10Speaker 4: bonus coverage. Let's play a little game called Who Said It?
- 20:12Speaker 4: NFL or college-related pearl. We're going to do one real quick.
- 20:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Here we go. Who said this? We are 0 for
- 20:19Speaker 4: last week. To have a guy like that who doesn't
- 20:22Speaker 4: even get tired, I don't know how he does it.
- 20:24Speaker 4: He's running the ball every play, catching it out of
- 20:26Speaker 4: the backfield. I'm looking in the huddle, and he's not
- 20:28Speaker 4: even breathing hard. I don't know how he does it.
- 20:31Speaker 3: Okay, I will go with Jared Goff on Jameer Gibbs,
- 20:34Speaker 3: although Ashton Jenner or Jameer Gibbs is subject to this.
- 20:37Speaker 4: I'm going to go Cooper Rush, surprise starter for Atlanta,
- 20:41Speaker 4: talking about Bisham Robinson.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Good one.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 20:46Speaker 4: To have a guy like that, I mean, he doesn't
- 20:47Speaker 4: even get tired. I don't know how he does it.
- 20:48Speaker 6: He's running the ball every play, whatever.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Catching it out the backfield and he's still, I'm looking
- 20:53Speaker 4: in the huddle and he's not even breathing hard. I'm like,
- 20:54Speaker 4: I don't know how he does it. I'm going to
- 20:56Speaker 4: give you half a point for that.
- 20:57Speaker 2: I think I should get three quarters of a point.
- 20:59Speaker 4: Three quarters of a point. I'm giving that to you.
- 21:00Speaker 4: I'm going to Ross St. Brown. Talk about Jameer Gibbs
- 21:02Speaker 4: on the Lions.
- 21:03Speaker 3: That's a problem though. Do we want Jameer Gibbs to
- 21:05Speaker 3: be running the ball every play? I was a little
- 21:07Speaker 3: worried about that. David Montgomery had a great game on
- 21:09Speaker 3: Sunday as well.
- 21:11Speaker 2: I think the Lions have to protect their star running.
- 21:13Speaker 4: But they didn't do so in the off season. They
- 21:15Speaker 4: didn't get depth. They don't have David Montgomery anymore.
- 21:17Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Coming up next. Ooh, this is bonus coverage here. John
- 21:21Speaker 4: Fanta of NBC Sports will join us next to talk
- 21:23Speaker 4: about college football, pro football, and his new show on NBC.
- 21:27Speaker 4: Stick around. Not So Fast.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Welcome back to Not So Fast. I'm Perloff. He's Pabst.
- 21:33Speaker 3: And, Paul, one of the great things about debuting on
- 21:35Speaker 3: NBC Sports now on Peacock, we debuted the same day
- 21:38Speaker 3: as John Fanta, Fanta in 60. Really proud of that. And,
- 21:41Speaker 3: of course, we're a longtime fan. Fanta in 60, college
- 21:45Speaker 3: football countdown, just all over NBC Sports. And been doing
- 21:49Speaker 3: such an incredible job. John, it's so good to have you.
- 21:52Speaker 3: How are you doing, buddy?
- 21:54Speaker 5: Oh, guys, I'm doing well. I enjoyed week one of
- 21:58Speaker 5: the NFL. I thought it was dramatic. I love that
- 22:01Speaker 5: the windows were pretty balanced in drama. And look, the
- 22:05Speaker 5: team that I'm a fan of did not ruin my
- 22:08Speaker 5: entire day. It was around 108 when things sort of expired.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Okay, so we're going to get the college football. Let's
- 22:15Speaker 4: pull the Band-Aid on this. You grew up a Browns
- 22:17Speaker 4: fan and And they weren't awful last year. Their defense
- 22:20Speaker 4: looked okay. The Jared Verst trade, you kind of like
- 22:22Speaker 4: the direction of the team. But that's a body blow
- 22:25Speaker 4: on Sunday, isn't it?
- 22:27Speaker 5: I think it's probably the most disturbing thing about this, fellas,
- 22:31Speaker 5: is that I don't think that the casual would believe
- 22:34Speaker 5: that the Browns have made the playoffs two of the
- 22:37Speaker 5: last six years. People would find that hard to believe,
- 22:40Speaker 5: and rightly so. What they're doing isn't just bad. It's
- 22:47Speaker 5: worse than that because it's one thing to stink. It's
- 22:52Speaker 5: another to be tone deaf about it. And they should
- 22:57Speaker 5: be ashamed of what they did on Sunday afternoon. That
- 23:00Speaker 5: was not National Football League caliber. At the end of
- 23:04Speaker 5: the day, the NFL is an entertainment business. And if
- 23:09Speaker 5: you're trying to lose football games, I get it, okay?
- 23:14Speaker 5: This quarterback draft class is stacked with people. But the
- 23:18Speaker 5: owner of this team, Jimmy Haslam, came out in early
- 23:21Speaker 5: August and said, if it were me betting on it,
- 23:25Speaker 5: I'd take us over five and a half wins. Just
- 23:28Speaker 5: stop talking.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Just stop talking.
- 23:30Speaker 5: He comes out and says that. This franchise is close
- 23:34Speaker 5: to 80 games under. 500 since his ownership group took over.
- 23:39Speaker 5: Deshaun Watson couldn't play in 2023. In what world, in
- 23:45Speaker 5: what world is any National Football League player who couldn't
- 23:49Speaker 5: play their position three years ago still in the league?
- 23:53Speaker 5: It is the worst quarterback room in the NFL. Even, like,
- 23:57Speaker 5: I watch these other teams. Jacoby Brissett, Geno Smith, Kirk Cousins. Like,
- 24:02Speaker 5: they're functional. They're functional. The Browns put the fun in dysfunctional.
- 24:09Speaker 2: John, when do they go to Shador Sanders?
- 24:12Speaker 5: Should have happened already, Andrew. I will say this until
- 24:16Speaker 5: I'm blue in the face, and I feel like a
- 24:20Speaker 5: lot of outsiders maybe don't believe me. I think you two,
- 24:24Speaker 5: I'm curious to see if you do believe me. I'm
- 24:27Speaker 5: telling you guys right now. He, Watson, cannot start the
- 24:33Speaker 5: home opener for the Browns, which is less than two
- 24:36Speaker 5: weeks from now. It's against the Panthers. He cannot start
- 24:41Speaker 5: that game. He cannot start that game. And it's not
- 24:45Speaker 5: even about performance, guys. Like, well, I'm way past that.
- 24:48Speaker 2: John, you're right.
- 24:48Speaker 4: It's like pressing a bad hand. They made a horrible decision.
- 24:51Speaker 4: They keep doubling down on this decision. It feels like
- 24:54Speaker 4: a franchise. If you look at the Knicks 10 years ago,
- 24:56Speaker 4: they somehow went from feeble and ownership that's a mess
- 24:59Speaker 4: to somehow getting into title. It's hard to picture, but
- 25:02Speaker 4: the Browns need to clear the books with this guy,
- 25:05Speaker 4: draft a good quarterback next year, and they've got a
- 25:07Speaker 4: lot of draft capital. Absolutely.
- 25:10Speaker 5: The Browns are not– that's the other frustrating thing. They're
- 25:12Speaker 5: not devoid of talent. But you can sense it from
- 25:15Speaker 5: that locker room. They don't believe in him. Nobody does.
- 25:21Speaker 5: And there's people getting paid millions of dollars that say
- 25:23Speaker 5: they still believe in this guy all because of $ 230 million.
- 25:26Speaker 5: And when I say Watson can't play the home opener–
- 25:29Speaker 5: It's not because he can no longer play. It's because
- 25:33Speaker 5: if I were the NFL, I'd be a little bit
- 25:35Speaker 5: concerned about the scene inside that stadium. You both know
- 25:39Speaker 5: passionate fan bases. Cleveland Browns fans, they have no filter.
- 25:43Speaker 5: They have no control.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I'm worried.
- 25:46Speaker 5: I'm worried about that scene if he starts that game.
- 25:48Speaker 1: I really am.
- 25:50Speaker 3: John, I was actually worried about the 2027 Browns quarterback
- 25:53Speaker 3: on Saturday night when Arch Manning was trailing against Ohio State.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Take us into the control room during Saturday night. You
- 26:01Speaker 3: had Iowa, Iowa State on NBC, and Texas, Ohio State.
- 26:04Speaker 3: It was a crazy night.
- 26:06Speaker 5: Well, you know, Chris Sims and Joshua Perry are on
- 26:08Speaker 5: our panel, so Nicole Auerbeck and I were trying to
- 26:10Speaker 5: keep them separate from each other. They both had their
- 26:13Speaker 5: letterman's jackets on. And Perry, I mean, this was the
- 26:16Speaker 5: total 180, guys. Perry had his... His feet kicked back.
- 26:20Speaker 5: He was loving what he was seeing. When it was 23-3, and,
- 26:25Speaker 5: you know, it's one thing to say it's okay. Like,
- 26:29Speaker 5: if a bear does you know what in the woods,
- 26:30Speaker 5: do people believe it? But I don't know about you two,
- 26:33Speaker 5: but watching the game, I thought to myself, man, if
- 26:35Speaker 5: Texas scores a touchdown. Things are going to get interesting here.
- 26:40Speaker 5: Because Ohio State, even though they were up 20, they
- 26:42Speaker 5: got gift-wrapped that lead. They got gift-wrapped that lead. They
- 26:45Speaker 5: were kind of conservative all night. The one guy that
- 26:48Speaker 5: was making plays was Jeremiah Smith. But they weren't running
- 26:51Speaker 5: the ball great. They were not. And their defense was performing,
- 26:55Speaker 5: but the heat, I thought, could get to them. It did.
- 26:59Speaker 3: Shocking.
- 26:59Speaker 5: I mean, we are Cy Hawk ended before this game.
- 27:03Speaker 5: Our entire crew went right back into the game screening room,
- 27:07Speaker 5: you know, after working a 12 hour day and we
- 27:09Speaker 5: had to make sure, hey, we need to see how
- 27:11Speaker 5: this thing closes. It's as shocked as I've been watching
- 27:15Speaker 5: a fourth quarter of a game. The two, not one,
- 27:18Speaker 5: but two fourth down conversions, penalties, conservative play calling. It's
- 27:24Speaker 5: a really bad loss for Ryan Day. I mean, there's no–
- 27:27Speaker 5: Ohio State lost this.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Game to me. John, I thought you did a great
- 27:32Speaker 4: job at halftime kind of going counter, saying how do
- 27:34Speaker 4: they get back, not declaring it over. So many people,
- 27:37Speaker 4: especially on social media, declare a game over. Tonight you
- 27:39Speaker 4: have Herb Street on Fan 1060, so you can chop
- 27:42Speaker 4: that up altogether. You cover a lot of Big Ten.
- 27:44Speaker 4: You're hosting the Big Ten shows. How much of a
- 27:47Speaker 4: cleanup or a necessary cleanup was the Michigan win over Oklahoma?
- 27:52Speaker 7: Oof.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Well, when you saw the line come out for the game,
- 27:57Speaker 5: my brain went to, all right, something's up here. This
- 27:59Speaker 5: is going to be a football game. They're going to
- 28:01Speaker 5: hang around. But I didn't think that Michigan could conceivably
- 28:04Speaker 5: win the game. And the reason why was because Western
- 28:07Speaker 5: Michigan pushed them around. They pushed them around. At the
- 28:09Speaker 5: line of scrimmage, Michigan lost the game at the line
- 28:12Speaker 5: of scrimmage. I don't know if they really won. They
- 28:15Speaker 5: won it over Oklahoma. Did they win it significantly?
- 28:18Speaker 6: No.
- 28:19Speaker 5: But Bryce Underwood was a better runner than John Mateer.
- 28:22Speaker 5: And that was the difference in the football game. Oklahoma,
- 28:27Speaker 5: under Brent Venables, I feel like we're not even giving
- 28:30Speaker 5: them much credit for the playoff appearance last year because
- 28:34Speaker 5: they ended up unraveling, and they weren't an easy– they
- 28:37Speaker 5: weren't a fun watch. And offensively, they're kind of a
- 28:39Speaker 5: car stuck in neutral. And that's– it was the perfect–
- 28:44Speaker 5: if you were to select any top 15 team this
- 28:47Speaker 5: past Saturday for Michigan to play– I think he would
- 28:49Speaker 5: have drafted Oklahoma because of how offensively slow they are
- 28:53Speaker 5: at times. And it showed. The Big Ten's not off
- 28:56Speaker 5: to a good start, but that on Saturday, that's a
- 29:00Speaker 5: bad loss for the SEC to take. If you thought
- 29:02Speaker 5: Oklahoma was the third or fourth best team in your league,
- 29:04Speaker 5: that's a tough way to lose because they look terrible.
- 29:08Speaker 3: You know, another favorite in the Big Ten, Oregon. Lost
- 29:11Speaker 3: Oklahoma State. I was already worried about Oregon after week one.
- 29:16Speaker 5: All right.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Is there any chance they turn around after what happened
- 29:19Speaker 2: on Saturday?
- 29:20Speaker 5: Well, I'm going to twist it on you guys and
- 29:22Speaker 5: give you a not so fast here. OK, I'm going
- 29:25Speaker 5: to take the car like this and I'm going to
- 29:28Speaker 5: say when that game ended, my brain went to. If
- 29:34Speaker 5: Lincoln Wiley at USC is ever going to work, USC
- 29:37Speaker 5: beats Oregon a week from Saturday.
- 29:39Speaker 2: At the Coliseum.
- 29:40Speaker 5: That is it, plain and simple. That's where my brain went, Andrew.
- 29:44Speaker 5: My brain did not go to Oregon. It went to,
- 29:47Speaker 5: we circled this date at the end of September as
- 29:50Speaker 5: USC's potential breakthrough night. They have been waiting for a
- 29:53Speaker 5: night of validation. That game actually got more interesting with
- 29:58Speaker 5: Oregon now having a loss because Oregon has to win
- 30:00Speaker 5: the game. They can't lose the game. They're still going
- 30:03Speaker 5: to have Ohio State. They're still going to have Indiana.
- 30:05Speaker 5: Conventional wisdom says they're going to lose one of those
- 30:07Speaker 5: football games. They can't be 9-3 with one of those
- 30:09Speaker 5: three losses being to Oklahoma State. So will they recover?
- 30:15Speaker 5: I don't think they will. I don't like the way
- 30:20Speaker 5: that they're playing. I know it's two games in, but
- 30:22Speaker 5: there are so many issues across the board. And their defense,
- 30:26Speaker 5: I mean, it got shredded. Jaden Maiava and USC could
- 30:29Speaker 5: have a field day in LA.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great point. And the USC freshman talent,
- 30:34Speaker 4: they've had a couple games to get ready. All right,
- 30:36Speaker 4: your show, Phantoms 60, 6 p.m. Eastern, NBC Sports Now, Peacock, NBCSN.
- 30:42Speaker 4: We are teammates now, JF, as I call you, JF.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Your new show, you have an answer machine. That answer
- 30:48Speaker 4: machine is hot. It's white hot, and you're getting some
- 30:51Speaker 4: questionable calls. And I mean that in a good way, right?
- 30:53Speaker 5: Yeah. We are getting questionable calls. Even Paul Pabst happened
- 30:57Speaker 5: to call the show and ask what the loudest atmosphere was.
- 31:01Speaker 5: And I'll keep submitting questions to you guys. I want
- 31:03Speaker 5: to come in a day and ask you, I love
- 31:06Speaker 5: your food segment now of going to different restaurants around
- 31:10Speaker 5: the country and showcasing those. But really happy to be
- 31:14Speaker 5: teammates with you guys and loving what you're doing. And
- 31:16Speaker 5: I appreciate the kindness back. And Paul, Andrew, the voicemail
- 31:20Speaker 5: box is open anytime. Thank you both for not leaving
- 31:23Speaker 5: condolences for my football team since the services had already passed.
- 31:27Speaker 5: We didn't even take until week one for that to happen.
- 31:29Speaker 5: I very much appreciate it.
- 31:30Speaker 3: John, I was going to say, we'll have you in
- 31:31Speaker 3: after a Browns win, but we want you in sooner
- 31:33Speaker 3: than that.
- 31:34Speaker 4: Wow, that's a shot.
- 31:36Speaker 5: Yeah, that would be a little while from now. So
- 31:38Speaker 5: there's no guarantees on when that appearance would come. So
- 31:41Speaker 5: let's not put that in writing for a while.
- 31:43Speaker 3: Awesome. Thanks, buddy.
- 31:44Speaker 2: We'll talk to you soon.
- 31:45Speaker 4: See you, Jeff.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Appreciate you guys. Thanks for having me.
- 31:48Speaker 2: I love Jon Fanta's passion for the Browns, Paul. It's
- 31:51Speaker 2: hard to do. It is.
- 31:52Speaker 4: You've got to be consistent. He's a young man. You've
- 31:55Speaker 4: got to think once in your lifetime it's got to
- 31:57Speaker 4: work out. Like being a Cubs fan, once in your lifetime,
- 31:59Speaker 4: Browns fan, it's going to be a long life.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Fanta and 60 Tonight, Jon Gruden and Kirk Herbstreit. All right,
- 32:04Speaker 3: coming up next on Not So Fast, we go to
- 32:07Speaker 3: the clip joint. Big debate about a controversial call that
- 32:11Speaker 3: Paul and I had no idea about.
- 32:13Speaker 2: That's next on Not So Fast.
- 32:20Speaker 6: How does this happen in the NFL in 2026 that
- 32:24Speaker 6: I don't know the rules? Anybody, raise your hand now. Marvin, Dylan,
- 32:28Speaker 6: did you know the rule that was invoked nine minutes
- 32:31Speaker 6: to go in the second quarter on this Jared Goff
- 32:34Speaker 6: play with the ball going backwards?
- 32:37Speaker 4: Marvin, no?
- 32:38Speaker 2: Absolutely not. Dylan? Did not. Mm-hmm.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Paulie?
- 32:42Speaker 4: No, and when it was explained, I know you're going
- 32:43Speaker 4: to play the cut, I was sitting there going, is
- 32:45Speaker 4: this new?
- 32:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:47Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 32:47Speaker 6: Right, because you grew up, grandma told you, ball goes backwards.
- 32:50Speaker 4: Yeah, learned that when I was four.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Fritzie?
- 32:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I had no idea.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I thought that was a fun one.
- 32:55Speaker 6: So we're 0 for 5 here, and not only 0
- 32:57Speaker 6: for 5, I'm watching the game live, and then I
- 32:59Speaker 6: flipped over, Red Zone had Pereira on TV live too,
- 33:02Speaker 6: so we all heard this in real time.
- 33:05Speaker 4: A rule, and then on the feed.
- 33:07Speaker 6: I mean, this is a moment in the game that
- 33:10Speaker 6: is a touchdown for the New Orleans Saints.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Paps and Pearl off here
- 33:17Speaker 4: at NBC Sports Now. This is the clip joint. That
- 33:18Speaker 4: was Tony Reale and the crew a couple hours ago
- 33:21Speaker 4: on the Dan Pats show, chopping up that play halfway
- 33:24Speaker 4: through the Saints-Lions game. Pearl, I'm going to yield the
- 33:27Speaker 4: floor to you. What did you see on that play?
- 33:30Speaker 2: I don't want the floor.
- 33:31Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't want the floor. This is
- 33:32Speaker 4: so obvious. You go first.
- 33:34Speaker 2: Okay, so they.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Kind of ruled that it was his intention, Jared Goff's intention,
- 33:39Speaker 3: to throw the ball forward. According to the rule book,
- 33:41Speaker 3: and this is not a new rule, Paul, this is
- 33:44Speaker 3: actually a forward pass. And Mike Pereira, of course, explained it,
- 33:48Speaker 3: Fox's officiating expert. He said, Goff had started his throwing motion,
- 33:52Speaker 3: throwing motion starts, hand going up, then it's hit, ball comes.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Loose, his intent was to throw it forward.
- 33:58Speaker 3: And since that motion had already started, which was a
- 34:00Speaker 3: bit controversial, that's going to be a forward pass no
- 34:03Speaker 3: matter where it lands. Then if you went on social media, Paul,
- 34:05Speaker 3: there was about 100 clips of Similar cases where they
- 34:09Speaker 3: did not.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Call it a forward pass, where they called that exact
- 34:11Speaker 2: play a fumble.
- 34:12Speaker 4: I have so many issues with this. First of all,
- 34:14Speaker 4: his intent has nothing to do with this. I assume
- 34:16Speaker 4: every quarterback is intending to throw the ball forward. Hence,
- 34:20Speaker 4: if it was a forward pass, by definition, it would
- 34:22Speaker 4: have gone forward. Cracked, Andrew. Here's the thing. The other
- 34:26Speaker 4: thing is, I thought that if a defensive lineman or
- 34:29Speaker 4: a defender hits the quarterback and the ball goes squirrelly,
- 34:33Speaker 4: It's almost a fumble by default, even if it went
- 34:36Speaker 4: forward and rolled. I've seen that called the past few years.
- 34:39Speaker 4: This is not a forward pass. His intent has nothing
- 34:41Speaker 4: to do with it. If it goes backwards, by definition,
- 34:44Speaker 4: it's a lateral. I mean, this is day one football stuff.
- 34:47Speaker 2: Let me ask you this.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Okay, say I had the football like this, and I
- 34:50Speaker 3: was throwing forward. Someone knocked my arm, and it went
- 34:52Speaker 3: like that. You might call that a forward pass.
- 34:55Speaker 4: I wouldn't because it's still at some juncture has to
- 34:58Speaker 4: go forward while leaving your hand. Let's say it goes
- 35:00Speaker 4: forward and batted backward. It's by forward. But if it
- 35:04Speaker 4: never goes forward, it can only be one other thing,
- 35:06Speaker 4: a lateral, which is unintentional lateral, or you can define
- 35:10Speaker 4: it as a fumble. If I'm the Saints, I don't
- 35:12Speaker 4: know how much they complained about this, but this is debilitating.
- 35:15Speaker 4: They went in for a touchdown this play. This wasn't
- 35:16Speaker 4: just some average scrum.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Okay, at least they didn't add a second to the
- 35:20Speaker 2: clock like college football. Can we at least give the
- 35:22Speaker 2: NFL credit for that?
- 35:23Speaker 4: It does feel like they invented a new rule in
- 35:25Speaker 4: the offseason and just happened to launch it on us
- 35:27Speaker 4: Americans in the middle of a random game. They're like, hey, Lions-Saints-
- 35:32Speaker 4: No one's really paying attention to that one. Let's just
- 35:34Speaker 4: jack this rule into you.
- 35:35Speaker 2: It's not a new rule. That's it. Okay. It's not.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Well, you said it like they put it in March quietly,
- 35:40Speaker 3: the owners meeting. That's not what happened.
- 35:41Speaker 4: I think that's exactly what happened.
- 35:43Speaker 2: That's not what happened. Okay.
- 35:44Speaker 4: They've never called this rule. Okay. Then for the past
- 35:47Speaker 4: decade or so, they've had this rule and never used it.
- 35:50Speaker 2: You got to look into that. I don't think it's
- 35:52Speaker 2: a new rule. Actually, Mike Pereira said like, yeah, of course,
- 35:54Speaker 2: his intention. And everyone said his intention was.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Of course his intention is to throw it forward. That's
- 35:59Speaker 4: what quarterbacks do for a living. All right, next up,
- 36:01Speaker 4: Texas coach Steve Sarkeesian. Oh, he had an interesting weekend. Now,
- 36:05Speaker 4: at halftime, he probably wasn't thinking that he was going
- 36:07Speaker 4: to have a really good postgame news conference. And then
- 36:09Speaker 4: his team came back. They beat Ryan Day in a
- 36:12Speaker 4: great Saturday night game. And here's Sark after the game.
- 36:17Speaker 8: I definitely think it was helpful because we could be
- 36:19Speaker 8: like some other teams and we could play Jones Jr.
- 36:22Speaker 8: high tonight and win 66 to nothing. And I don't
- 36:25Speaker 8: know what that does for us. What I think it
- 36:27Speaker 8: did for us tonight is we found out that we can.
- 36:31Speaker 8: And we've been close, and we've been knocking on the door.
- 36:34Speaker 8: And so I do think that that's helpful for us,
- 36:37Speaker 8: that we got an opportunity to play in a game
- 36:39Speaker 8: like this before we got into conference play against a
- 36:43Speaker 8: lead opponent and come out on top. Surely that's helpful
- 36:48Speaker 8: for us moving forward from a mentality standpoint.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Pearl, no matter what you think of Texas football and Sark,
- 36:52Speaker 4: you've got to love what he says there. More big games,
- 36:55Speaker 4: prime time against big opponents. They're not scared to schedule
- 36:58Speaker 4: him at Texas. They still played Texas State last week.
- 37:00Speaker 4: He kind of glazed over that one, Sark. But, yes,
- 37:03Speaker 4: you've got to agree with him there.
- 37:04Speaker 3: Well, last year, 14-7 loss to Ohio State in Columbus
- 37:07Speaker 3: probably cost them the playoff because they had three losses
- 37:09Speaker 3: with two losses they get in.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Sure.
- 37:11Speaker 2: I still think overall college football is... needs to be
- 37:14Speaker 2: more lenient on these teams who lose.
- 37:16Speaker 3: Those out-of-conference games. Because I want to see Texas-Ohio State
- 37:19Speaker 3: every weekend. Unfortunately, you don't get that. Right.
- 37:21Speaker 4: And I don't think Ohio State should be dinged that
- 37:23Speaker 4: much for a loss. They played heavyweight on the road
- 37:26Speaker 4: and came close to winning that game. A player two
- 37:28Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter and they win that game. But
- 37:30Speaker 4: I like what Sark is saying there. Now, Will he
- 37:33Speaker 4: keep doing so going forward? Will he schedule out of conference?
- 37:35Speaker 4: Will he schedule USC again and all those big weights?
- 37:38Speaker 2: Well, a big part of it, do they go to
- 37:39Speaker 2: 24 teams in the playoff?
- 37:40Speaker 3: Then you can schedule anybody because a team like Texas
- 37:43Speaker 3: is pretty much guaranteed to make it in. The big
- 37:46Speaker 3: story is here, they beat Ohio State. That was massive
- 37:48Speaker 3: for this program.
- 37:49Speaker 4: I wonder what he's thinking at halftime. I wonder if
- 37:51Speaker 4: you're a coach at halftime, do you ever think, God,
- 37:53Speaker 4: I don't look forward to that news conference after the
- 37:55Speaker 4: game because you're at home, all the stars are out,
- 37:57Speaker 4: and you laid an egg in the first half.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, listen, he was probably just as surprised
- 38:01Speaker 3: as the rest of us. They came away with it.
- 38:03Speaker 2: Okay, if you want to feel better about yourself, I advise.
- 38:06Speaker 3: You watch this next clip joint because Cleveland Browns' Todd
- 38:09Speaker 3: Munkin had a worse day than pretty much anybody.
- 38:12Speaker 2: He commented on the quarterback situation, which is not good.
- 38:17Speaker 7: I'm sure as hell not firing me. I'm not firing
- 38:19Speaker 7: our staff. I'm not giving it all of our players.
- 38:22Speaker 7: So he happens to be one of 53. We'll analyze
- 38:24Speaker 7: everything that we do. It's not just him.
- 38:26Speaker 1: Okay.
- 38:26Speaker 7: We're, we're putting this on Deshaun.
- 38:29Speaker 3: Okay.
- 38:30Speaker 7: Which is unfair.
- 38:31Speaker 1: Okay.
- 38:32Speaker 7: And whatever there is externally doesn't matter to me. That
- 38:36Speaker 7: doesn't affect me. That has nothing to do with my decision-making.
- 38:40Speaker 4: I rarely feel bad for people who make $ 5 million
- 38:43Speaker 4: a year, but this guy, he's got Tom Izzo voice
- 38:45Speaker 4: and it's September and, He looks like a school teacher
- 38:48Speaker 4: at the end of a hard school year. He looks
- 38:49Speaker 4: like worn out. It's September 11th, 12th, 13th.
- 38:53Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what? He did bring some of this
- 38:55Speaker 2: on himself. By taking the job? Yes, that. He could
- 38:59Speaker 2: have said no.
- 39:00Speaker 3: But also, we watched the Browns in the preseason, and
- 39:02Speaker 3: Shador Sanders was playing better than Deshaun Watson. But Deshaun
- 39:06Speaker 3: Watson's making all this money, and the owner said, I'm
- 39:08Speaker 3: paying this guy $ 220 million to at least give him
- 39:11Speaker 3: some starts.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Well, I'm glad you brought that up, because you and
- 39:13Speaker 4: I talked about this before, before the show even started
- 39:15Speaker 4: not so fast. And we said, I don't believe Todd Munkin,
- 39:19Speaker 4: by choice, would start Deshaun Watson, because that's not a
- 39:22Speaker 4: better football decision. Deshaun Watson has not looked good the
- 39:24Speaker 4: past few years and hasn't really been that healthy. I
- 39:27Speaker 4: think this was a management ownership decision to start. Deshaun Watson.
- 39:30Speaker 4: They paid all this money, and they're trying to right
- 39:33Speaker 4: a four-year wrong. and hoping they would play well. He stinks.
- 39:37Speaker 4: He's overpaid, he's unlikable, and he's got lots of baggage.
- 39:40Speaker 4: Let's start this guy. Go ahead, Todd Munkin, you figure
- 39:42Speaker 4: it out.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Yeah, what about the theory that they're tanking and he
- 39:46Speaker 3: can lose more games than he can win? Even though, listen,
- 39:48Speaker 3: he was bad. He picked it up a little bit
- 39:50Speaker 3: in the second half. I'm not sure any quarterback would
- 39:52Speaker 3: win games in that situation. The team is not good.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Well, if it's organizational tanking, then Todd Munkin has to
- 39:56Speaker 4: say to management at some point, hey, okay, I'll do this,
- 39:59Speaker 4: but my contract is set for next year. If we
- 40:02Speaker 4: go 0-17, which is actually in play... I'm guaranteed I
- 40:05Speaker 4: have a job next year because if I tank for you,
- 40:07Speaker 4: you know what will happen. If you get the number
- 40:09Speaker 4: one pick, all of a sudden this guy wants that job,
- 40:11Speaker 4: that guy wants that job, and he's one and done.
- 40:13Speaker 3: Well, just to keep it within the clip joint, what
- 40:15Speaker 3: if Arch Manning is the number one pick and he says,
- 40:17Speaker 3: let's bring Sark into the NFL.
- 40:19Speaker 2: I like Steve Sharkeesian.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Then Todd Munkin gets $ 5 million for one year and
- 40:23Speaker 3: walks away. I mean, again, this is not a good
- 40:26Speaker 3: weekend for him.
- 40:27Speaker 2: He's in a terrible spot.
- 40:28Speaker 4: It's only four months left to go, Coach. All right,
- 40:30Speaker 4: coming up next. It's time for constructive criticism, the feel-good,
- 40:34Speaker 4: and much, much more. Stick around. Not So Fast after
- 40:36Speaker 4: the break.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast, I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pabst,
- 40:40Speaker 3: NBC Sports Now, Peacock. Paul, the big game tonight. Patrick
- 40:44Speaker 3: Mahomes is back.
- 40:45Speaker 2: The Chiefs host the Broncos.
- 40:47Speaker 4: What do you expect? This is a hammer Monday night
- 40:49Speaker 4: game right off the gate. This is fantastic. You know,
- 40:51Speaker 4: you said before when Mahomes was hurt and kind of
- 40:53Speaker 4: not sure whether he was going to play the first month,
- 40:56Speaker 4: you've got to face that pass rush, Nick Benito and
- 40:58Speaker 4: the crew. They're as good as... As good as the Dolphins,
- 41:02Speaker 4: I should say as good as the Texans. They're as
- 41:03Speaker 4: good as anybody with the pass rush.
- 41:05Speaker 2: They've led the league in sacks the last two years.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Nick Benito is fired.
- 41:08Speaker 4: So if you're a Chiefs fan, it's like an exciting
- 41:10Speaker 4: but concerning game.
- 41:11Speaker 3: So if you're the Chiefs, you want to hand the
- 41:14Speaker 3: ball off a lot. You've got Ken Walker from the Seahawks.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Ken Walker.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Ken Walker, as he is on the depth chart, the
- 41:20Speaker 3: official depth chart, formerly Kenneth Walker. And they have a rookie,
- 41:23Speaker 3: Emma Johnson, who's really good at running back. So I
- 41:25Speaker 3: think they're practicing all August with Patrick Mahomes under center,
- 41:29Speaker 3: which is not usual for him. They want to run, run, run,
- 41:33Speaker 3: and not let Nick Bonito and everybody run after Patrick Mahomes.
- 41:36Speaker 4: And how funny would it be, after all these teams
- 41:38Speaker 4: scoring 30 on Sunday, that this is another game where
- 41:41Speaker 4: the two teams who score points for a living go
- 41:43Speaker 4: under 30, kind of like the Rams went 7th.
- 41:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to see Jalen Waddell.
- 41:47Speaker 3: To me, the Broncos adding the former Dolphins wide receiver,
- 41:51Speaker 3: it's a whole new element.
- 41:51Speaker 2: Everyone keeps talking about him. They're going to line him
- 41:53Speaker 2: up all over. I think he could be really outstanding.
- 41:56Speaker 4: And they were pretty good last year. If they looked
- 41:58Speaker 4: at the offense with Bo Nix adding that type of weapon,
- 42:00Speaker 4: that underneath weapon, he's not prime Tyree Kelly. He doesn't
- 42:03Speaker 4: have that level of explosiveness, but he is a great player.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Yeah, I picked the Broncos to win the Super Bowl
- 42:08Speaker 3: against the Rams.
- 42:09Speaker 4: So would you poo-poo yourself by picking against them tonight,
- 42:12Speaker 4: or should we save that?
- 42:14Speaker 2: Let's save that.
- 42:15Speaker 3: I've got to be honest, I did not know the
- 42:16Speaker 3: Ravens were going to look that good, or I might
- 42:18Speaker 3: have thought twice about that.
- 42:19Speaker 4: It's time for a little constructive criticism off the weekend.
- 42:21Speaker 4: Thoughts on what we're wearing, football, food. Whatever you got.
- 42:25Speaker 4: First one, Perloff. Let's see what we got. Constructive criticism.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Oh, look, it's me. Let me read this one, Paul.
- 42:32Speaker 3: Against the grain, at their peaks, Carson Wentz is the
- 42:35Speaker 3: most talented player in the Vikings QB room over Kyler
- 42:38Speaker 3: Murray and J.J.
- 42:39Speaker 2: McCarthy.
- 42:40Speaker 3: Don't think it's particularly close. This is from August 12, 2026. Now,
- 42:44Speaker 3: maybe I was overstating it, but clearly the Vikings got better, unfortunately,
- 42:49Speaker 3: when Kyler Murray got hurt and Carson Wentz came in
- 42:52Speaker 3: the game. Now, Wentz was shaky to start with. But
- 42:54Speaker 3: then he just started targeting Justin Jefferson. I've thought all
- 42:57Speaker 3: along Wentz is probably the best Kevin O'Connell coach quarterback
- 43:02Speaker 3: in that Vikings QB room.
- 43:03Speaker 2: And it played out great on Sunday.
- 43:05Speaker 3: I didn't understand why Wentz didn't even get consideration as
- 43:08Speaker 3: a starter.
- 43:09Speaker 2: I don't get the Kyler Murray thing.
- 43:11Speaker 3: I always thought Kyler Murray was going to have trouble
- 43:13Speaker 3: in this offense or trouble staying healthy, and that's what happened.
- 43:16Speaker 4: I like this total setup email. This is like a
- 43:18Speaker 4: third-person email. tweet to the Not So Fast show. You know,
- 43:21Speaker 4: I'm with you. If you don't remember Pete Carson Wentz,
- 43:24Speaker 4: he was a fantastic runner and a big, strong passer.
- 43:28Speaker 4: No one's going to think of him as the most
- 43:29Speaker 4: physically talented guy in the room anymore, but there was
- 43:31Speaker 4: a time that he was because Kyler Murray didn't have
- 43:33Speaker 4: power as a runner. He had a lot of speed.
- 43:35Speaker 3: Is it okay, by the way, that I called out
- 43:36Speaker 3: a tweet that it's sort of right compared to one
- 43:38Speaker 3: of the many, many bad takes that I have on
- 43:40Speaker 3: social media?
- 43:40Speaker 4: It is right on brand for you, Pearl. All right,
- 43:43Speaker 4: next up, constructive criticism. Let's see what we have coming
- 43:46Speaker 4: up next.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Chip in Florida, are you doing hair treatments? You seem
- 43:51Speaker 4: to have more hair than you did a while back.
- 43:53Speaker 4: That's to me. Let's check. I thought I was fading fast.
- 43:58Speaker 4: I did trim it up a little bit. I think
- 44:00Speaker 4: by keeping it tight, I look like I have more.
- 44:03Speaker 4: But should I go on record here?
- 44:05Speaker 2: I don't know. If you are getting them, you need
- 44:06Speaker 2: to pay more.
- 44:08Speaker 4: Yeah, if I got hair treatments, I should ask my
- 44:10Speaker 4: money back because they missed. No, it's a slow retreat.
- 44:14Speaker 4: It's 20 years in the making, and we're holding on.
- 44:17Speaker 4: just by this much, but thank you for that.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Would you ever go Jason Statham and just say goodbye?
- 44:21Speaker 4: Yeah, or go Brian Urlacher and load it up for
- 44:26Speaker 4: the back half of the career.
- 44:27Speaker 2: I just compared you to Jason Statham. I would take
- 44:29Speaker 2: that if I were you.
- 44:29Speaker 4: I would take that in a second. Of course, I'm
- 44:31Speaker 4: just like a wimp compared to him. All right, next up,
- 44:33Speaker 4: constructive criticism. Let's see what we have here, Pearl. Oh,
- 44:36Speaker 4: this is from me. Look at me with the setup.
- 44:38Speaker 4: My wife just yelled down, we made a little something.
- 44:41Speaker 4: My wife was cooking upstairs with one of my children.
- 44:43Speaker 4: I'm not sure which one. I can't keep track of
- 44:45Speaker 4: their names during football season. And she brings a big,
- 44:48Speaker 4: huge tub of Italian sausage, peppers, and onions, then rolls,
- 44:53Speaker 4: and the optional marinara sauce. And I would marry her
- 44:56Speaker 4: all over again. What are your thoughts on that dish, Pearl?
- 44:59Speaker 2: That looks amazing.
- 45:00Speaker 3: I mean, this is the most self-serving constructive criticism we've
- 45:02Speaker 3: ever done. I don't think we should be able to
- 45:04Speaker 3: do this anymore. Scott's in my ear, our producer, saying,
- 45:07Speaker 3: you know, you guys could get posts from other people
- 45:09Speaker 3: as well, but that looks amazing.
- 45:12Speaker 4: Well, we're working, and maybe we'll get a picture of
- 45:14Speaker 4: Scott's new daughter so he can feel like he's part
- 45:16Speaker 4: of the team. But, you know, where does that rank?
- 45:18Speaker 4: Sausage and peppers as a game-day treat? Where does that rank?
- 45:22Speaker 2: That's incredible. I don't know why.
- 45:24Speaker 3: I never think to make that, though, but sausage is
- 45:26Speaker 3: a go-to in the Perloff household.
- 45:28Speaker 4: We love sausage. You're going to edit that as you will.
- 45:30Speaker 4: All right, it's time for the feel-good. If you watched
- 45:32Speaker 4: on NBC, Iowa State versus Iowa on Saturday night. Really
- 45:36Speaker 4: tight game. Surprisingly hit the under. This is.
- 45:41Speaker 4: This is what they do every week at Iowa, the
- 45:43Speaker 4: Stead Family Children's Hospital. End of the first quarter, the fans,
- 45:47Speaker 4: the players, the coaches, everybody waves up to the kids
- 45:49Speaker 4: at the Stead Family Children's Hospital. What a great tradition.
- 45:53Speaker 4: My wife and kids were sitting next to me, and
- 45:54Speaker 4: they hadn't watched an Iowa home game before. And they're like,
- 45:57Speaker 4: this is the coolest thing of all time.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Oh, it's incredible.
- 46:00Speaker 3: I've always found it so interesting the way the hospital
- 46:02Speaker 3: is placed next to the stadium.
- 46:05Speaker 2: I've seen it many, many times, and it still makes
- 46:06Speaker 2: me feel good every time.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really cool. Iowa's been doing this for a
- 46:10Speaker 4: long time now. It's on brand, and the other team
- 46:12Speaker 4: gets involved as well.
- 46:13Speaker 2: Yeah, especially, I mean, and also, that's a pretty good rivalry.
- 46:16Speaker 3: We have a lot of DP show fans in Iowa,
- 46:18Speaker 3: and this has been heated for many, many years.
- 46:20Speaker 4: Well, those games are kind of the sure things to
- 46:22Speaker 4: me of the college football weekend. When you have, like,
- 46:23Speaker 4: the Apple Cup, or if you have the Iron Bowl,
- 46:25Speaker 4: or if you have Iowa State, I always lean towards
- 46:28Speaker 4: watching them because they're almost always close. I think in
- 46:30Speaker 4: the past 10 years, seven of those are three-point games
- 46:33Speaker 4: with Iowa State.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 46:34Speaker 3: All right, Paul, we mentioned keep it friendly for Chiefs
- 46:38Speaker 3: and Broncos.
- 46:38Speaker 2: You want to bet this one? You know what?
- 46:40Speaker 3: As I mentioned earlier, I'm already out on the survivor
- 46:42Speaker 3: pool thanks to the Chargers.
- 46:44Speaker 2: So I didn't exactly have the greatest weekend.
- 46:47Speaker 3: But I got to be honest, I am leaning Broncos.
- 46:49Speaker 3: And even if they try and protect Patrick Mahomes tonight,
- 46:52Speaker 3: I feel like the Broncos are going to be a
- 46:53Speaker 3: house on fire to get after their rival.
- 46:55Speaker 4: How do you look at games like this? When you
- 46:56Speaker 4: have a heavyweight battle, Broncos, Chiefs, or Texans versus Bills,
- 47:00Speaker 4: do you really care who wins that game or are
- 47:02Speaker 4: you looking for the nuance?
- 47:04Speaker 3: Oh, for me, Patrick Mahomes' health. Patrick Mahomes, people in
- 47:09Speaker 3: KC are saying he looks amazing. Everyone picked their Super
- 47:11Speaker 3: Bowl pick and nobody had the Chiefs. If Mahomes looks
- 47:14Speaker 3: good tonight, that's going to change.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And if you look last week, Mahomes was asked about
- 47:17Speaker 4: his knee again. He goes, we're done. We're done with
- 47:19Speaker 4: this topic. I like him being angry because he's so
- 47:21Speaker 4: far past the knee situation.
- 47:22Speaker 3: And what about a Mary Travis Kelsey? He was sort
- 47:25Speaker 3: of downgraded last year.
- 47:26Speaker 2: They didn't use him a lot.
- 47:27Speaker 3: Is he going to be better or worse now that
- 47:29Speaker 3: it's official with Taylor?
- 47:30Speaker 4: Well, married guys usually put on 15 pounds in the
- 47:33Speaker 4: first year of marriage, so look for that when you're
- 47:34Speaker 4: watching the game. Do you have a pick?
- 47:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I'm going Denver.
- 47:37Speaker 3: I'm going Jalen Waddell is going to make a splash,
- 47:39Speaker 3: has a long touchdown tonight.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Close game, but Bo Nix gets away with a win.
- 47:44Speaker 2: Who do you got?
- 47:45Speaker 4: I'm going to go Chiefs just to be countered a
- 47:46Speaker 4: little bit. I believe in the Broncos as a for
- 47:48Speaker 4: the entire season, but tonight on Monday Night Football. How
- 47:51Speaker 4: do you feel about week one? How do you feel
- 47:52Speaker 4: about your picks, your warm takes? How do you feel
- 47:54Speaker 4: about week one?
- 47:54Speaker 2: I can't believe all the scoring. It was awesome.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Basically, the Chargers are my big disappointment. The Cowboys defense,
- 48:01Speaker 3: my second big disappointment. I am really, really curious about
- 48:05Speaker 3: how bad the Browns are going to be this year.
- 48:06Speaker 4: How do you look at the other side of it,
- 48:08Speaker 4: the Arizona Cardinals? Are you like, nice little story for
- 48:10Speaker 4: one week or a nice story for the month?
- 48:12Speaker 2: I'm about to buy a Jeremiah Love jersey. Are you
- 48:15Speaker 2: kidding me? I'm all in, Paul. You know me.
- 48:17Speaker 4: A Tyler Algier jersey?
- 48:18Speaker 2: And how do you feel about the Bears?
- 48:21Speaker 4: I feel good about the Bears. I hope they keep
- 48:23Speaker 4: scoring a lot of points.
- 48:24Speaker 2: 59 points a game?
- 48:26Speaker 4: And maybe playing a little defense. All right, that's it
- 48:28Speaker 4: for us. Tune in tomorrow. We'll have some more on
- 48:30Speaker 4: this game, the Monday Night Football wrap-up. Tune in to
- 48:32Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick Show tomorrow. DP will be back right
- 48:34Speaker 4: here on NBC Sports and NBC Sports Now. But that's
- 48:36Speaker 4: all for us. Week one in the books. Tune in
- 48:39Speaker 4: to Monday Night Football. Stick around.
- 48:40Speaker 2: Take care.
