- 0:01It's good to see everyone here this morning.
- 0:04We're grateful for your presence.
- 0:08I always hate interrupting all of the fellowship that's going
- 0:12on, but they gave us a task to do, so we're going to do it.
- 0:17This is my last Sunday filling in for Dwayne.
- 0:24He will be back, I believe next Sunday and so you get the
- 0:28professional teacher back next week.
- 0:31And, but I appreciate him giving me the opportunity and asking me
- 0:34to fill in for him last week and this week while he's out of town
- 0:38doing some traveling. Of course, his theme or his
- 0:43topic for the quarter has been dealing with studies through the
- 0:48various kings of Israel and Judah and some some lessons that
- 0:52we can learn from them and some things that we learn about God's
- 0:56relationship with mankind through the things that he does
- 1:01with the kings. And you know, one of the hardest
- 1:05things for the substitute teacher to do is to go through
- 1:09and cover things that are going to be pertinent to the
- 1:11discussions that are being had in class without walking all
- 1:14over the teachers material who's teaching the class.
- 1:18So last week we went through First Samuel chapter 8 and
- 1:23talked about the situation with Samuel that leads into the
- 1:28request or the the the pleading by the people for a king and how
- 1:32God is going to answer that request.
- 1:35And he says, you're not really going to like it.
- 1:37You're not going to like what the impact of it is going to be
- 1:40on your lives, on your wealth, on the various other things that
- 1:44are a part of your life. But I will give it to you and
- 1:49you will see. And then you're going to come to
- 1:51me and you're going to say, look at what's happened.
- 1:53And I'm going to say, well, you asked for it.
- 1:56And that's exactly what is going to happen.
- 1:59But this morning what I want us to do is I want to move to the
- 2:03opposite end of the time period of the kings of Israel and
- 2:08Judah, and specifically of Judah.
- 2:10And I want us to talk about a a particular man this morning that
- 2:16I think far too often gets overlooked in our studies of the
- 2:21Old Testament. And it's a shame on many
- 2:25different levels because he is one of the prophets that we
- 2:29actually read a great deal about through his letter.
- 2:36And yet he's not one of the prophets that often comes to the
- 2:39forefront of our mind unless we're quoting the books of the
- 2:42Old Testament. His letter is the third longest
- 2:48book of the Old Testament, surpassed only by the books of
- 2:53Isaiah and Psalms. He is going to be known as the
- 2:59weeping prophet. And yet we spend very little
- 3:04time studying the book of Jeremiah, in part because
- 3:09Jeremiah doesn't have a lot to say.
- 3:13He does have some things to say, but he doesn't have a lot to say
- 3:17about the coming Messiah. That's not Jeremiah's focus in
- 3:22his time. There are going to be statements
- 3:24that Jeremiah is going to make. There's going to be prophecies
- 3:27that Jeremiah made that look forward to the coming of Christ
- 3:30and and to the things that are going to be happening at the
- 3:33time that Jesus comes and things of that nature.
- 3:37But Jeremiah is a a pivotal figure in his interaction with
- 3:43the kings of Judah at the end of the kingdom's time, at the time
- 3:50when the Babylonians are starting to rise and they're
- 3:54starting to overtake Judah. And So what I would like us to
- 3:59do this morning for the next few minutes is I want us to build a
- 4:04bit of a character profile of Jeremiah.
- 4:08Who was he? What, what did he go through?
- 4:11Because one of the interesting things about Jeremiah's book, or
- 4:14at least it's always been fascinating to me, is the fact
- 4:17that Jeremiah is far more than just a book of prophecies that
- 4:22that he made or of speeches that he gave or of letters that he
- 4:26wrote. Jeremiah is a a very strong
- 4:30historical record of what was going on in God's interaction
- 4:36with the kings of Judah at the end of their days as a Kingdom.
- 4:42And so I want us to take some time today to look at Jeremiah
- 4:47and to get a little familiar with who he is and the time in
- 4:51which he lives and the struggles that he goes through in seeking
- 4:55to be the spokesman for God. Because when I think, I think
- 4:59when we do that, number one, we will have a very strong
- 5:03appreciation for Jeremiah's devotion to God and Jeremiah's
- 5:09fulfillment of, of what God had as his purpose for him.
- 5:14But if you're anything like me, you'll get through the study
- 5:18today and you'll be like, you know, I, I really need to spend
- 5:20some time rereading the book of Jeremiah and spending some time
- 5:24remembering and, and looking at the things that Jeremiah did in
- 5:29the service of God. So we're going to begin in
- 5:32Jeremiah chapter 1 this morning. And what I want to do is we're
- 5:37going to spend some time here in chapter 1 to start with to to
- 5:41set the scene, so to speak, as Jeremiah is going to tell us a
- 5:45little bit about himself. And then I want us to see some
- 5:49of the events that are going on in the life of Jeremiah.
- 5:53Jeremiah is going to prophecy for over 40 years in the Kingdom
- 5:59of Judah. The his book is going to span
- 6:03the better part of 40 years in the events that are going to be
- 6:08discussed in it. And he is going to see and
- 6:13experience things from a first person perspective that very few
- 6:18are going to be able to say that they were present for at the end
- 6:23of the days of Judah. So as you get into the start of
- 6:27the book of Jeremiah, in Jeremiah chapter one, verse one,
- 6:31Jeremiah begins his letter this way.
- 6:33He says the words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah of the
- 6:37priests who were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin, to whom
- 6:42the word of the Lord came in the days of Josiah the son of Ammon
- 6:45king of Judah in the 13th year of his reign.
- 6:50It came also in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king
- 6:54of Judah, until the end of the 11th year of Zedekiah the son of
- 6:59Josiah king of Judah, until the carrying away of Jerusalem
- 7:03captive in the 5th month. Jeremiah's introduction of his
- 7:11book follows this premise. Jeremiah is the son of a priest,
- 7:19so that means he is of what tribe?
- 7:22He is of the tribe of Levi. He is raised in the territory of
- 7:28Benjamin, and he is going to be called by God as one of his
- 7:37prophets in the days of King Josiah.
- 7:41Now, what do we know about King Josiah?
- 7:43All right, He's one of the good kings of Judah.
- 7:50What else do we know? What's he?
- 7:51Well, what's he most famous for? Unfortunately.
- 7:57Was that what? All right, he keeps the
- 8:00Passover. What else?
- 8:05It's going to be during his time that the book of the Law is
- 8:08going to be found when they're doing renovations of the temple
- 8:11and nobody's ever seen it before.
- 8:13Nobody's read it in his day. It has been, it has been tucked
- 8:17away and lost for generations now as far as that goes.
- 8:22And it's going to be that that's going to be the impetus for
- 8:25Josiah doing some of the the greatest reform work that's done
- 8:30in Judah in the history of the Kingdom.
- 8:34Josiah is also going to take the throne at the ripe old age of
- 8:40eight years old. He is the epitome of the boy
- 8:44king. He's going to reign for 31 years
- 8:49and he is going to be one of the few kings of Judah of which
- 8:57there really isn't anything negative that God has to say
- 9:01about him. He is a good king and he and he
- 9:05is a good king both from the sense of his relationship with
- 9:09God and in the sense of his leadership skills among the
- 9:14people. He is good in every respect.
- 9:19And yet Jeremiah is going to be called in the middle of Josiah's
- 9:25reign, the 13th year of Josiah's reign.
- 9:29Josiah is still going to be on the throne for another 18 years.
- 9:33At the time that Jeremiah is called by God to begin to
- 9:37prophecy to the people of Judah, they have a good king on the
- 9:42throne. They are turning in the right
- 9:47direction from the standpoint of the leadership of Judah.
- 9:51And if you were to look at the Kingdom from the lens of
- 9:58Scripture, just knowing about who Josiah is, everything looks
- 10:04great. Everything should be positive
- 10:07and upbeat and happy and looking forward in a positive direction
- 10:12that this is a, a, a new push forward for the people of Judah.
- 10:20And then Jeremiah shows up on the scene.
- 10:24Now Jeremiah is going to tell us a little bit more about himself
- 10:27here in chapter 1 and where he is when things get started.
- 10:33In verse four he says, then the word of the Lord came to me,
- 10:37saying before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.
- 10:41Before you were born, I sanctified you.
- 10:44I ordained you a prophet to the nations, God tells Jeremiah in
- 10:51his opening statement to him. Jeremiah, I picked you before
- 10:58you were ever born. Now for some people that would
- 11:07be the well, you've made a good choice.
- 11:13You know, the pride and the arrogance and everything else
- 11:16would just come wafting out. Not Jeremiah.
- 11:20As a matter of fact, Jeremiah responds in verse 6 and he says,
- 11:24ah, Lord God, behold, I cannot speak for I am a youth.
- 11:30The word there that is translated youth comes from the
- 11:33Hebrew word which means boy. He's still, he's not yet
- 11:41considered a man in Judah, which by all rights means he's under
- 11:48the age of 20 at this particular time.
- 11:52It is surmised by some that he is likely around the age of 16
- 11:58to 18 years old at this particular time.
- 12:02So so he is old enough to to know and to to understand and
- 12:06and to be able to function and speak like an adult, but he's
- 12:11still a youth. You think about him as being
- 12:16similar in age to likely the age David is going to be when David
- 12:20takes on Goliath, he is not going to be looked up to as a
- 12:28man of God. He says, I'm not even allowed to
- 12:31speak. I'm just a boy.
- 12:36But the Lord said to me, Do not say I am a youth, for you shall
- 12:41go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command you, you
- 12:46shall speak. Do not be afraid of their faces,
- 12:50for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.
- 12:54Then the Lord put forth his hand and touched my mouth.
- 12:57And the Lord said to me, Behold, I have put my words in your
- 13:01mouth. See, I have this day set you
- 13:04over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out and to
- 13:07pull down, to destroy and to throw down, to build and to
- 13:12plant. Moreover, the word of the Lord
- 13:14came to me saying, Jeremiah, what do you see?
- 13:17And I said, I see a branch of an almond tree.
- 13:21The Lord said to me, you have seen well, for I am ready to
- 13:24perform my word. And the word of the Lord came to
- 13:27me the second time saying, what do you see?
- 13:29And I said, I see a boiling pot, and it is facing away from the
- 13:32north. Then the Lord said to me, Out of
- 13:35the north calamity shall break forth, and on all the
- 13:38inhabitants of the land. For behold, I am calling all the
- 13:41families of the kingdoms of the north, says the Lord.
- 13:44They shall come, and each one set his throne at the entrance
- 13:48of the gates of Jerusalem, against all its walls all
- 13:52around, and against all the cities of Judah.
- 13:58I will utter my judgments against them concerning all
- 14:01their wickedness, because they have forsaken me or forsaken me,
- 14:06burned incense to other gods, and worshipped the works of
- 14:09their own hands. Therefore prepare yourself and
- 14:12arise and speak to them all that I command you.
- 14:16Do not be dismayed before their faces, lest I dismay you before
- 14:20them. For behold, I have made you this
- 14:23day a fortified city, and an iron pillar and bronze walls,
- 14:28against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against its
- 14:32Princess, against its priests, and against the people of the
- 14:36land. They will fight against you, but
- 14:39they shall not prevail against you.
- 14:42For I am with you, says the Lord, to deliver you, Gloria, my
- 14:47understanding, when they have. A bar mitzvah the boy is.
- 15:08Supposed to become a man. And isn't that the age of like
- 15:101314? So that is at the age of 13 as
- 15:11far as that goes. But in the Old Testament times,
- 15:16the age at which, at least from my understanding, the age at
- 15:20which a boy was considered a man was the age at which he was
- 15:25taking on the responsibilities of a man.
- 15:28And a lot of that would start with military service or with
- 15:31his ability to start serving his apprenticeships for whatever
- 15:35role and responsibility he was going to take on.
- 15:38And that was at the age of 20. They were not allowed to serve
- 15:42in the military at in any formal sense until the age of 20,
- 15:45though some would go and fight, given the circumstances when
- 15:50invasions took place. You know, if you were capable of
- 15:52carrying a sword or a spear or a pitchfork or whatever the case
- 15:57might be, you were going to fight because it was your family
- 16:00that was being attacked. But from the standpoint of being
- 16:04considered an adult in this time period, usually that was set at
- 16:10the age of 20 years old. And that's why David in First
- 16:16Samuel is not with the army. He's not old enough yet.
- 16:21He is not yet of that particular age.
- 16:23And he still looked at as a young man or as a boy.
- 16:28And Jeremiah falls into the same type of classification.
- 16:31He's not necessarily what we would call a child still, but
- 16:37he's not yet to the point of being considered a man fully
- 16:43capable of all things within Jewish society.
- 16:47David, don't the Levites have the?
- 16:5220 to 50 that they serve. And the the Levites is actually
- 16:5825. You have to be before you could
- 17:01serve as a priest and then you would serve until the age of 50.
- 17:05Those those five years between 20 and 25, you're you're
- 17:08basically an apprentice for all of the functions that the
- 17:12Levites were supposed to undertake and were supposed to
- 17:15do. And then at age 25, you could
- 17:18begin serving as a priest. But yes, and then you would
- 17:21serve until the age of 50. All right, other questions,
- 17:25comments. Anybody have anything they want
- 17:28to add into it at this point, Eric?
- 17:31It's encouraging to know that Josiah dedicated to the Lord and
- 17:43mature for their age and doing just amazing things.
- 17:47Not only Josiah at 8:00, but you'll see him at 16 and age 20
- 17:54just doing, you know, cleaning house, cleaning, idolatry.
- 17:59And and then you have Jeremiah on the prophesying and preaching
- 18:02side of things. And to see that that tandem at
- 18:05the same time in leadership positions was must have been
- 18:10very encouraging, at least to the faithful.
- 18:13And, and I think it's a, it's a dual, dual edged sword as far as
- 18:16that goes because you know, at the time, remember, Jeremiah is
- 18:20going to be called in the 13th year of Josiah.
- 18:24That means Josiah is 21 years old at the time that Jeremiah,
- 18:29who is in his late teens is going to be called by God to be
- 18:32his prophet to the people. So you have this youth movement
- 18:38among the Kingdom of Judah with who God is utilizing.
- 18:42But you know what that means as far as the people of Judah, the
- 18:47older men can't be trusted. The older men aren't doing their
- 18:50job. The older men are the ones who
- 18:53are offering sacrifices to idols, and they are the ones who
- 18:56are going through and pulling the people of Judah away.
- 18:59And their hearts are not where they should be.
- 19:03God's having to utilize the young people in order to lead
- 19:08Judah back to where they're supposed to be because the
- 19:12fathers and the grandfathers aren't doing it and they
- 19:15probably don't want to hear it and they really don't want to
- 19:18hear it from their sons and their grandsons.
- 19:23He says I am but a youth. But I want you to think about
- 19:25the weight that God is placing on Jeremiah.
- 19:31He is a young man. He is 161718 years old.
- 19:36And God says in Jeremiah chapter 1 and in verse 18, he says, for
- 19:41behold, I have made you this day a fortified city, and an iron
- 19:46pillar and bronze walls against the whole land, against the
- 19:51kings of Judah, against its Princess, against its priests,
- 19:56and against the people of the land.
- 19:59Jeremiah, you're not going to be liked by anybody.
- 20:08Let me ask you a question. For most teenagers, what is the
- 20:12one thing they want more than anything else?
- 20:16They want to be liked. They want somebody to appreciate
- 20:20them. Now, oftentimes they have plenty
- 20:24of people appreciating them, but that's not the kind of
- 20:26appreciation they want. That being said.
- 20:38How much pressure does it put on a young man to be told, all
- 20:45right, you're my guy and you need to be ready?
- 20:51Don't be scared. I'll be here with you the whole
- 20:53way. But nobody's going to like you.
- 21:02And it's going to be even harder for Jeremiah because I want you
- 21:06to turn forward in the book to Jeremiah chapter 16.
- 21:16In Jeremiah chapter 16, we learn a little bit more about this
- 21:20young man, and one of the harder aspects of the book of Jeremiah
- 21:27is the fact that everything is given in an order and it's given
- 21:34in a certain way for a reason, but it's not necessarily a
- 21:38chronological order. There's going to be several
- 21:41instances of jumping back and forth in the timeline during the
- 21:45days of Jeremiah with the various prophecies that are
- 21:49being made because it's going to be in some ways, you know the
- 21:53style or the type of prophecy you are going to move through
- 21:56Jeremiah's life as you get deeper in.
- 21:59But not every chapter is going to be in chronological order.
- 22:04But as you get to chapter 16, at the beginning of chapter 16, God
- 22:10tells Jeremiah, the word of the Lord also came to me saying, you
- 22:14shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in
- 22:18this place. For thus says the Lord,
- 22:21concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this
- 22:24place, and concerning their mothers who bore them, and their
- 22:28fathers who begot them in this land, they shall die gruesome
- 22:32deaths. They shall not be lamented, nor
- 22:35shall they be buried, but they shall be like refuse on the face
- 22:39of the earth. They shall be consumed by the
- 22:42sword and by famine, and their corpses shall be meat for the
- 22:45birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth.
- 22:49For thus says the Lord, Do not enter the House of mourning, nor
- 22:52go to lament or bemoan them. For I have taken away my peace
- 22:57from this people, says the Lord. Jeremiah's got the great burden
- 23:07of being the prophet of God, but he's also going to be asked to
- 23:10carry another burden through his life.
- 23:12What is it? He's got to do it alone.
- 23:20He's not going to have a wife. He's not going to have children.
- 23:29You know, there are those, we, we often talk about those as
- 23:35Jesus discusses them over in Matthew chapter 19.
- 23:43Who are those who are going to be, as Jesus puts it, eunuchs
- 23:53For the Kingdom of heaven's sake, that's Jeremiah.
- 24:02Jeremiah was told by God, don't marry, don't have children.
- 24:10But there's a specific reason why he tells Jeremiah.
- 24:13This is the reason because you know what, Jeremiah?
- 24:18I just don't want you to have any happiness in life.
- 24:21I, I don't want you to feel any joy for anything.
- 24:26I need you to be the miserable prophet.
- 24:29Is that what he says? No, actually be more miserable
- 24:34if he had family and they were in all this stuff, he tells
- 24:39Jeremiah. Jeremiah, I need you to
- 24:41understand something. You don't want to have children
- 24:45in this environment because if you have children in this
- 24:50country, in this environment in which you live right now, you're
- 24:56going to bury your children. He is actually trying to save
- 25:03Jeremiah from an even deeper grief and struggle and loss so
- 25:10that he can focus on the things that the Lord needs him to focus
- 25:16on for the people. Jeremiah is 1 of the strongest
- 25:28individuals you will ever read about in scripture.
- 25:32From this prospect of, of his mental stamina, his emotional
- 25:38fortitude, Jeremiah is called upon as a young man to take a
- 25:47mantle that most older men would reject.
- 25:53And then he is asked to do it, living a a lifestyle and, and
- 26:00under circumstances that most men would not accept and would
- 26:05not want. And he does it, and it is
- 26:14difficult and it is painful for him.
- 26:18But, you know, the older he gets and the more that he endures,
- 26:22the more that he realizes just how much wisdom God had in
- 26:32saving him from those struggles and trials.
- 26:38Because Jeremiah is going to deal with all kinds of hardship
- 26:48as you get toward the end or into the second-half of the book
- 26:53of Jeremiah. The first half has a great deal
- 26:56of the, of the judgments that are coming of, of the promises
- 27:00of the desolation that is to come.
- 27:02And, and over the course of of 20 years, while good King Josiah
- 27:07is still on the throne, Jeremiah is going throughout the land
- 27:12warning the people of the impending doom of Judah, which
- 27:19seems to go contrary to Josiah being on the throne.
- 27:24But you know, the interesting thing is Jeremiah is not sent to
- 27:27Josiah to tell him about all of the things that he's doing wrong
- 27:33and all of the things that he needs to change in all of the
- 27:35ways he's not acceptable. He's not told to do that once.
- 27:39Where is Jeremiah sent? He's sent to the people because
- 27:44one of the most fascinating aspects of this time in Judah is
- 27:49for so many of the occasions in Judah, you have people that are
- 27:53trying to do what's right and the leadership that is evil and
- 27:56wicked in the sight of the Lord. In Josiah's day, it's flipped on
- 27:59its head. You have good leadership in
- 28:04Judah and the people that don't want to do what God says.
- 28:10So Jeremiah is not going to be sent to Josiah.
- 28:17He's going to be sent to the people to proclaim what is
- 28:23coming after Josiah's death. You are going to have three of
- 28:30Josiah's sons that are going to sit on the throne of Judah, one
- 28:40for a very short period of three months.
- 28:42Jehoiah has and then you're going to have Jehoiah Kim, who
- 28:47is the son of Josiah, who will sit on the throne.
- 28:53His son Jehoiah Kin, or Koniah as he's otherwise going to be
- 28:58known, will then be placed upon the throne for a period of about
- 29:033 months. And then Jehoiah Kim's uncle,
- 29:09Jehoiah Kim's brother, the third son of Josiah Zedekiah, will sit
- 29:15on the throne for the last 11 years.
- 29:19There's going to be another 2223 years from the death of Josiah
- 29:24until Judah completely falls. But it's just going to be a
- 29:30couple of years after the death of Josiah when we have that
- 29:34initial carrying away in six O 6 BC, where Nebuchadnezzar is
- 29:39going to come and you're going to have Daniel and those of of
- 29:43his group who were part of the royal family who are going to be
- 29:53taken away into captivity. Jehoiakim is going to sit on the
- 30:00throne as somewhat of a puppet king in many ways.
- 30:07He is going to sit on the throne, but he's supposed to do
- 30:09what he's told and he's supposed to behave himself, and he's
- 30:12supposed to just sit under the thumb of Nebuchadnezzar.
- 30:18Well, he does that for a little while, and then he decides he
- 30:21doesn't like being under the thumb of Nebuchadnezzar, so he
- 30:25rebels. That's when Nebuchadnezzar is
- 30:29going to come and there's going to be a second carrying away.
- 30:33And it's going to be during that second carrying away that
- 30:36Ezekiel is going to be carried away.
- 30:38And he's going to go with those of of his carrying away over by
- 30:43the river Kibar. And Jehoiakin or Konaya is going
- 30:51to take the throne After three months, he's going to be
- 30:57removed. And Zedekiah will be placed on
- 31:00the throne, and he will be on the throne until the final
- 31:03carrying away in 586 BC. So while Daniel's going to
- 31:13Babylon, and while Ezekiel's going to Babylon, and while the
- 31:17people are getting spread every which way and the Kingdom is
- 31:21crumbling and the Kingdom is falling apart, guess who's still
- 31:24in Jerusalem? Jeremiah and Jeremiah is going
- 31:32to be saved on many different occasions from death.
- 31:36You turn over to Jeremiah chapter 26 and in Jeremiah 26 at
- 31:42the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim.
- 31:49So this is the first, actually, it's the second son of Josiah to
- 31:56take the throne, the first having only been on the throne
- 31:59for a couple of months before being removed.
- 32:03Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, king of Judah.
- 32:08So it's the beginning of his reign.
- 32:10We're not quite to the Babylonian captivity yet, but
- 32:13we're almost there. And it says the word of the Lord
- 32:17came to Jeremiah saying, Thus says the Lord, Stand in the
- 32:21court of the Lord's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah
- 32:25which come to worship in the Lord's house.
- 32:28All the words that I command you to speak to them.
- 32:30Do not diminish a word. Perhaps everyone will listen and
- 32:34turn from his evil way, that I may relent concerning the
- 32:37calamity which I propose to bring on them because of the
- 32:41evil in their doings. And you shall say to them Thus
- 32:44says the Lord, if you will not listen to me, to walk in My law
- 32:48which I have set before you, to heed the words of My servants
- 32:51and prophets whom I sent to you, both rising up early and sending
- 32:56them, but you have not heeded. Then I will make this house like
- 33:00Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse to all the nations
- 33:03of the earth. Here's your chance, Jeremiah, go
- 33:10and proclaim, and perhaps everyone will listen.
- 33:16So the priests and the prophets and all the people heard
- 33:19Jeremiah speaking these words in the House of the Lord, verse 7.
- 33:22And it happened, when Jeremiah had made an end of speaking all
- 33:26that the Lord had commanded him to speak to all the people, that
- 33:29the priests and the prophets and all the people seized him,
- 33:32saying, You will surely die. Why have you prophesied in the
- 33:39name of the Lord, saying, This house shall be like Shiloh, and
- 33:42this city shall be desolate without an inhabitant.
- 33:44And all the people were gathered against Jeremiah in the House of
- 33:48the Lord. And when the Princess of Judah
- 33:51heard these things, they came up from the King's house to the
- 33:54House of the Lord, and sat down at the entry of the new gate of
- 33:58the Lord's house. And the priests and the prophets
- 34:01spoke to the Princess and all the people, saying, This man
- 34:04deserves to die, for he has prophesied against this city, as
- 34:09you have heard with your ears. And Jeremiah spoke to all the
- 34:13Princess and all the people, saying, The Lord sent me to
- 34:17prophecy against this house and against this city with all the
- 34:22words that you have heard. Now, therefore, amend your ways
- 34:26and your doings, and obey the voice of the Lord your God, and
- 34:29the Lord will relent concerning the doom that he has pronounced
- 34:33against you. As for me, here I am in your
- 34:36hand. Do with me as seems good and
- 34:38proper to you, but know for certain that if you put me to
- 34:41death, you will surely bring innocent blood on yourselves, on
- 34:45this city, and on its inhabitants.
- 34:47For truly the Lord has sent me to you to speak all these words
- 34:51in your hearing. So the Princess and all the
- 34:56people said to the priests and the prophets, This man does not
- 34:59deserve to die, for he has spoken to us in the name of the
- 35:03Lord our God. Certain of the elders of the
- 35:06land rose up and spoke to all the assembly of the people,
- 35:10saying, Micah of Moorishev prophesied in the days of
- 35:13Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of
- 35:16Judah. Thus says the Lord of hosts,
- 35:18Zion shall be plowed like a field, Jerusalem shall become
- 35:22heaps of ruins, and the mountains of the temple like the
- 35:24bare hills of the forest. Did Hezekiah, king of Judah, and
- 35:28all Judah ever put him to death? Did he not fear the Lord and
- 35:33seek the Lord's favor? And the Lord relented concerning
- 35:37the doom which he had pronounced against them.
- 35:39But we are doing great evil against ourselves.
- 35:45Jeremiah is going to be told, hey, you go into the the temple
- 35:50grounds and you preach. Maybe they'll change.
- 35:56What's the first response of the people when they hear it?
- 36:00Kill him? Why don't want to hear it?
- 36:07Same way with you. He spoke bad about our city.
- 36:16Interestingly enough. Who is it that comes to the
- 36:18defense of Jeremiah the Princess?
- 36:26Question. Who are the Princess in Judah at
- 36:30this time? It's the family of King Josiah.
- 36:38It's the royal family. Would have included likely the
- 36:45family of Daniel and various others.
- 36:51They come and they say he's not worthy of death.
- 36:52You remember Michael who prophesied in the days of
- 36:54Hezekiah a few generations ago? He said really rotten things
- 36:58about the city of Jerusalem. And guess what?
- 37:00Hezekiah didn't kill him. And we are evil.
- 37:10We're not doing what's right. Speaking of we as a people, do
- 37:22you notice that even within the last two years before the Israel
- 37:25or before Judah is going to go into captivity, Jeremiah, by
- 37:29means of his prophecies from God, is giving them a way they
- 37:33can avoid it? God doesn't want to do it.
- 37:38He doesn't want this to be the outcome.
- 37:42He knows their hearts. He knows they're not going to
- 37:45change their ways, but He's giving them every opportunity to
- 37:49change their path and the overwhelming majority of the
- 37:55people are dead set against it. Jeremiah is going to endure
- 38:07great misery over the next 10 to 12 years.
- 38:12Remember at the time that he's going to give this message at
- 38:15the start of of Jehoiakim's reign, he's going to be in his
- 38:20mid 30s. He's been prophesying now for 20
- 38:25years. He's now approaching 40 years of
- 38:30age. Everybody in the round knows who
- 38:35Jeremiah is. They've heard him for two
- 38:37decades. They've seen him since he was a
- 38:39boy. It's not any question about
- 38:44whether or not he actually speaks for God.
- 38:46It's a question of whether or not they like what it is, he
- 38:48said. And they didn't.
- 38:55They want to kill him. The Princess of Judah are going
- 39:05to spare him. It won't work the same for a man
- 39:12by the name of Urijah. You read at the end of the
- 39:15chapter who God is going to have prophecy.
- 39:17Much the same thing. Urijah is going to flee to Egypt
- 39:24and they're going to bring him back, and Jehoiakim will kill
- 39:27him for speaking. Much the same thing that
- 39:28Jeremiah does, but Jeremiah will be spared.
- 39:37Jeremiah is going to, at the behest of God, write letters
- 39:42after the first carrying away to the captives in Judah or in
- 39:47Babylon. In Jeremiah chapter 29.
- 39:51He is going to prophecy so many different things, and he's going
- 39:57to be interacting with the kings of Judah all the way up until
- 40:03the fall. We don't have time to read what
- 40:07happens in the fourth year of Jehoiakim after the first
- 40:12carrying away has taken place. Over in Jeremiah chapters 35 and
- 40:1736 where God tells Jeremiah to write the book of the message
- 40:22that he has and, and the things that he has prepared to write
- 40:27them in the scroll of the book. And so Jeremiah is going to put
- 40:30the prophecy that God has wanted written down and and Baruch is
- 40:35going to take it for Jeremiah and it's going to come into the
- 40:40presence of Jehoiakim, that same king that had been on the throne
- 40:46in chapter 26. Jehoiakim is going to read the
- 40:52prophecy and he's going to read the things that Jeremiah has to
- 40:56say. And he's going to take his pen
- 40:59knife and he's going to slice it into pieces and throw it into
- 41:02the fire. They're not going to listen.
- 41:15And Jeremiah is going to watch as not one, not 2, but three
- 41:23different times his people are going to be carried away into
- 41:28captivity. And when Jerusalem falls in
- 41:32Jeremiah chapter 39, Jeremiah is still there.
- 41:38It is going to be on that occasion, at that particular
- 41:41time, that a short little book by the name of Lamentations is
- 41:47going to be written. Jeremiah is going to be left
- 41:52behind with the remnant of the people of Judah that are left to
- 41:57remain. But then one final thing I want
- 42:00to show you before we close. Jeremiah is not even going to
- 42:06get to remain in Judah. In Jeremiah chapters 42 and 43
- 42:11after the third carrying away after the destruction of
- 42:14Jerusalem, society in Judah is completely crumbling and falling
- 42:19apart. And the leaders at that
- 42:23particular time in in that area decide we're going to Egypt,
- 42:28we're going to flee to Egypt, we're going to get out of here,
- 42:30and we're going to go find sanctuary among the Egyptians
- 42:33because the Egyptians are the enemies of the Babylonians.
- 42:36So the enemy of my enemy is my friend, right?
- 42:43In Jeremiah chapter 42, God tells Jeremiah after they ask
- 42:52Jeremiah to petition God for whether God will bless them for
- 42:56traveling to Egypt. Jeremiah says that he will.
- 43:01And God tells Jeremiah do not go.
- 43:07Do not go down into Egypt. It will not go well with you if
- 43:11you do and you know what happens.
- 43:17Verse 19, Jeremiah says, the Lord said concerning you, O
- 43:20remnant of Judah, do not go to Egypt.
- 43:23No, certainly that I have admonished you this day, for you
- 43:26were hypocrites in your hearts when you sent me to the Lord
- 43:28your God saying, pray for us to the Lord our God.
- 43:31And according to all that the Lord your God says, so declare
- 43:34to us and we will do. And I have this day declared it
- 43:37to you, but you have not obeyed the voice of the Lord your God,
- 43:41nor anything which He has sent you by me.
- 43:44Now, therefore, no, certainly that you shall die by the sword,
- 43:48by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go
- 43:51dwell. Jeremiah gives them the response
- 43:55of God. And you know what they say?
- 43:58Well, we'll see you later. We're on our way.
- 44:05But not only that, chapter 43 tells us they dragged Jeremiah
- 44:10to Egypt with them. It's not ever fully certain
- 44:14whether or not Jeremiah went willingly or whether he was
- 44:19forced to go along. God is going to use Jeremiah
- 44:23even in Egypt, even in the midst of all of the hardships and
- 44:26struggles that are going to be there, and they will be punished
- 44:30in Egypt and Jeremiah's time. The book of Jeremiah ends with
- 44:37Jeremiah in Egypt. Jeremiah's time was extremely
- 44:43difficult, and there were times where Jeremiah was hurting and
- 44:50struggling and even a little bit bitter about everything that he
- 44:53has had to go through in life. We didn't even talk about him
- 44:56being thrown into the cistern or various other things that he's
- 44:59going to have to deal with. Jeremiah is worthy of being
- 45:05known and remembered in our hearts.
- 45:08Being somebody that we look up to, being somebody whose
- 45:12devotion and courage and desire to be faithful to God is
- 45:16something we want to emulate in our own lives.
- 45:20He should not be the forgotten prophet.
- 45:23He should be the often remembered faithful spokesman
- 45:28for God. I hope that maybe this gives you
- 45:31a desire to read about Jeremiah's life a little bit
- 45:34more and to see some of the things that he went through to
- 45:37be faithful to God in a time when his people were far from
- 45:42faithful. Thank you so much for your
- 45:44attention this morning. Dwayne will be back next week,
- 45:47but I appreciate the opportunity to stand before you this week
- 45:50and last week.
