Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Iranian hardliners DISMISS new threat of US sanctions
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We begin this Sunday morning with the Iran conflict entering
- 0:03Speaker 1: a new phase, as Treasury Secretary Scott Besson says the
- 0:06Speaker 1: United States will be unveiling the toughest economic sanctions in
- 0:11Speaker 1: history on Tehran tomorrow, which President Trump has labeled Economic
- 0:16Speaker 1: d Day. Iranian hardliners dismissed the threat of new sanctions,
- 0:21Speaker 1: saying the shift in strategy shows that the US failed
- 0:24Speaker 1: at its military goals, adding that any new threats would
- 0:27Speaker 1: be met with a devastating response. The President of Iran, though,
- 0:32Speaker 1: is calling for an end to the war, while also
- 0:34Speaker 1: acknowledging the financial toll.
- 0:37Speaker 2: It has taken.
- 0:38Speaker 1: This as oil prices continue on the upswing from the
- 0:41Speaker 1: beginning of the month, with US crewed closing above eighty
- 0:44Speaker 1: seven dollars per barrel on Friday. Here's President Trump on Friday.
- 0:50Speaker 2: They have no money, they have no maybe, they have
- 0:54Speaker 2: no air force.
- 0:56Speaker 3: They are not paying their soldiers, they're not paying their police.
- 1:00Speaker 3: We have three hundred and fifty percent inflation. So we're
- 1:04Speaker 3: just gonna sort of see what happens. And we have
- 1:06Speaker 3: total control, as you know, of the border. We have
- 1:08Speaker 3: total control. If you look at the blockade, we have
- 1:12Speaker 3: total control of that entire region having to do with
- 1:16Speaker 3: the straight of hormones, and that means well into it
- 1:20Speaker 3: the land areas. So they would love to make a deal,
- 1:26Speaker 3: but they're not ready to make the right deal in
- 1:28Speaker 3: my opinion.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Meanwhile, trade talks between the United States and Canada collapsed
- 1:33Speaker 1: late Friday night, leaving Washington to impose fifty percent tariffs
- 1:38Speaker 1: on roughly twenty eight billion dollars in Canadian imports. Ottawa
- 1:42Speaker 1: said in response it will match the tariff's dollar for
- 1:45Speaker 1: dollar beginning September eighth. This comes as the national debt
- 1:49Speaker 1: crossed forty trillion dollars for the first time in history
- 1:52Speaker 1: on Wednesday. As the debt has more than doubled in
- 1:56Speaker 1: the past decade, in part due to a seven trillion
- 1:59Speaker 1: dollar new spending under the Biden administration, the Congressional Budget
- 2:04Speaker 1: Office estimates the national debt will rise to sixty four
- 2:08Speaker 1: trillion dollars by the end of twenty thirty six. Joining
- 2:12Speaker 1: me now on the agenda ahead when Congress returns next
- 2:15Speaker 1: month is Senate Majority Whip Wyoming Senator John Barrasso, Senator,
- 2:19Speaker 1: thank you so much for joining us. I do appreciate.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I want to start with Iran because there has been
- 2:25Speaker 1: a four hundred percent increase in number of ships moving
- 2:28Speaker 1: through the strait of our moves. You're close to the
- 2:31Speaker 1: President and we're traveling with him in South Carolina as
- 2:34Speaker 1: he was out there helping a campaign for his pick
- 2:36Speaker 1: for the Senate there in South Carolina. But what do
- 2:41Speaker 1: you think is going to happen, What will these economic
- 2:44Speaker 1: sanctions look like, and what do you think the effect
- 2:46Speaker 1: will be on Iran?
- 2:48Speaker 4: Well, the President is always focused on American safety and
- 2:52Speaker 4: American affordability, and in terms of Iran, we have to
- 2:55Speaker 4: make sure they never get a nuclear weapon.
- 2:58Speaker 2: That's the way that we keep ourselves safe.
- 3:00Speaker 4: And then in terms of affordability, once the straits are
- 3:03Speaker 4: completely open, with America right now producing more oil than
- 3:07Speaker 4: any place else in the world, prices will not just
- 3:10Speaker 4: come down, they will stay down long time. And that's
- 3:13Speaker 4: the contrast with the Democrats. You know, they love five
- 3:16Speaker 4: dollars a gallon gasoline because they wanted to force people
- 3:19Speaker 4: into electric vehicles. So what we see now is in
- 3:23Speaker 4: Iranian military that is its weakest ever. Their leadership has
- 3:27Speaker 4: been wiped out, their economy is in shambles, and they're
- 3:31Speaker 4: still dangerous. So the President's right to focus on it,
- 3:34Speaker 4: and now he's going even further economically, And as you said,
- 3:37Speaker 4: tomorrow is d day for.
- 3:38Speaker 2: The economy in Iran.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So in addition to the economic sanctions, the way to
- 3:43Speaker 1: have already been in place, how much worse could it
- 3:46Speaker 1: possibly be for the ninety million people of Iran. I
- 3:49Speaker 1: just don't understand why we keep saying, oh, we're going
- 3:53Speaker 1: to impose more sanctions, Like why not put everything out
- 3:56Speaker 1: there and then just say that's it? Like, how come
- 3:59Speaker 1: there's so much more in our quiver? How many quivers
- 4:02Speaker 1: do we have to do this? What is going to
- 4:05Speaker 1: be new about tomorrow?
- 4:07Speaker 4: Well we'll see what the Secretary of Treasury has to
- 4:09Speaker 4: say about that.
- 4:10Speaker 2: But it does seem to me that the suffering that's.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Going on in Iran right now, the maximum sanctions being applied,
- 4:17Speaker 4: are the things that are going to make Iran finally
- 4:19Speaker 4: say you're right, we were wrong. No nuclear weapon, straight's open.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Let's get back to probably trying to get some sort
- 4:27Speaker 4: of a life to the future.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I hope you're right. Help the President's right on this one.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Talk to me about Canada, Senator. We trade an awful
- 4:34Speaker 1: lot with Canada. Twenty eight billion dollars is I heard
- 4:39Speaker 1: as secretary of the Ambassador Greer Jamison Greer, or US
- 4:43Speaker 1: Trade representative is also an ambassador, talk about this, but
- 4:47Speaker 1: the problems are really coming out of China and out
- 4:50Speaker 1: of Canada, our next door neighbor.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Well, you're absolutely like the President has been very consistent
- 4:57Speaker 4: and he's saying, we're not going to let people take
- 4:59Speaker 4: it advantage of us. We're going to protect American jobs
- 5:02Speaker 4: and we're going to bring more jobs back to our country.
- 5:05Speaker 4: So I was with the President on air Force one
- 5:08Speaker 4: when Canada walked away from the table and we got
- 5:12Speaker 4: the call from the secretary who is talking the President
- 5:15Speaker 4: about this. Look, we've been a long term trading partner.
- 5:19Speaker 4: President Trump put new tariffs in effect. Canada has now
- 5:22Speaker 4: said they're going to do that come September eighth.
- 5:27Speaker 2: That may or may not be.
- 5:29Speaker 4: This is a time when it would be in the
- 5:30Speaker 4: best interest of Canada.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They'd be wise for.
- 5:33Speaker 4: Them to come back to the table, have the discussions
- 5:36Speaker 4: and make sure that we move forward because we need
- 5:38Speaker 4: to continue trade with Canada.
- 5:39Speaker 2: But the President is.
- 5:41Speaker 4: Very consistent, We're going to make sure to protect our
- 5:43Speaker 4: workers and bring jobs back to America.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And Senator, I also got to quickly ask you about
- 5:49Speaker 1: the craziness, the crazy town that is today's Democratic partner
- 5:53Speaker 1: party with the Socialists and I think the communists that
- 5:57Speaker 1: are over there. What in the world is going on
- 6:00Speaker 1: with the Democrats these days.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Well, they have gone as far to the left as
- 6:05Speaker 4: you can possibly imagine. Republicans are focused on making America
- 6:10Speaker 4: safer and more affordable. And look who's winning these primaries now.
- 6:14Speaker 4: It takes away all of those things. These Democrats who are.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Winning, And they did it in.
- 6:21Speaker 4: Michigan, they did it in Minnesota, they did it now
- 6:24Speaker 4: in Florida.
- 6:25Speaker 2: They want to make life worse for the American people.
- 6:27Speaker 4: They're talking about opening up the prisons, they're talking about
- 6:31Speaker 4: making it opening up the borders. They want to shut
- 6:34Speaker 4: down the military. They want to shut down the police.
- 6:36Speaker 4: They want to shut down immigrations and customs enforcement. They
- 6:39Speaker 4: want to release criminals in our communities. It seems to
- 6:42Speaker 4: me like they're in an anti American hate group and
- 6:45Speaker 4: they have this manifesto and when you read through it,
- 6:49Speaker 4: this seems to be destined to destroy America. They want
- 6:52Speaker 4: to take private property, take businesses. They're radical, extreme, dangerous, scary.
- 6:56Speaker 4: When they say they're going to do the things they
- 6:58Speaker 4: want to do. I believe them, which is why I
- 7:00Speaker 4: believe any vote for any Democrat just enables this. The
- 7:04Speaker 4: Democrats in the Senate say it's the path to the future,
- 7:07Speaker 4: it's the future of their party. It cannot be the
- 7:10Speaker 4: future for our country, Jason. The American people want better
- 7:14Speaker 4: than that. They want to have a safe communities to
- 7:17Speaker 4: wish to live. They want to have things that are affordable,
- 7:19Speaker 4: and we're not seeing that with these Democrats who want
- 7:22Speaker 4: to undo what we've done with our legislation. They want
- 7:27Speaker 4: to put taxes back on tips, on Social Security.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And on overtime.
- 7:32Speaker 4: What do they want to use the money for to
- 7:34Speaker 4: pay for health care for illegal immigrants?
- 7:37Speaker 2: Their candidate in Michigan, what did he say?
- 7:39Speaker 4: He said he wants to change the Second Amendment, get
- 7:41Speaker 4: rid of the idea of protecting our right to bear arms.
- 7:45Speaker 4: They want it to be our right for health care.
- 7:47Speaker 4: And that's the big difference right now.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Last question here. Part of winning the midterms is getting
- 7:53Speaker 1: the base excited. When you don't pass the Save America Act,
- 7:57Speaker 1: when there's forty trillion dollars in debt, when there's four
- 8:00Speaker 1: dollars a gallon gasoline, and we're involved and engaged in Iran.
- 8:04Speaker 1: What do you say to the base to say, you've
- 8:06Speaker 1: got to keep us in power or it's going to
- 8:09Speaker 1: get even worse.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Well, the President addressed that in South Carolina. We were
- 8:13Speaker 4: there with Darlene Graham, who's a wonderful candidate.
- 8:16Speaker 2: The runoff is this Tuesday.
- 8:18Speaker 4: In terms of the Save America Act, the President and
- 8:20Speaker 4: I talked about it as well. I am one hundred
- 8:23Speaker 4: percent with the President on the Save America Act. We
- 8:25Speaker 4: need to make sure that you have to be an
- 8:28Speaker 4: American citizen to register to vote.
- 8:30Speaker 2: You have to be showing a photo ID in order
- 8:34Speaker 2: to vote.
- 8:34Speaker 4: The reason it's passed hasn't passed so far is every
- 8:37Speaker 4: Democrat votes against it.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Every Republican has voted for it, and why haven't the
- 8:41Speaker 2: Democratic word for it?
- 8:44Speaker 4: Every Republican that the Senate has voted for of.
- 8:48Speaker 2: The two components that I mentioned.
- 8:50Speaker 4: And the reason the Democrats don't want it is they've
- 8:52Speaker 4: let ten million illegal immigrants into this country. The Democrats
- 8:56Speaker 4: want to make it easier for them to vote, and
- 8:58Speaker 4: these radicals that are being now been nominated, they want
- 9:02Speaker 4: to make them citizens and vote. That's why we need
- 9:05Speaker 4: to elect more Republicans. We need more Republicans elected this year.
- 9:09Speaker 4: In November, every Republican needs to get out and vote
- 9:12Speaker 4: because we know what the Democrats will do to the party.
- 9:16Speaker 4: What they're doing with their party and what they would
- 9:18Speaker 4: do to the country is scary. It was bad, it
- 9:21Speaker 4: would be we would be less safe, we would have
- 9:24Speaker 4: less money in our pockets, and common sense Americans understand
- 9:28Speaker 4: overwhelmingly and support the Save America Act.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And know that, Centator, with the debt we have.
- 9:34Speaker 4: The government is too big. It spends too much. We're
- 9:38Speaker 4: not taxed too little, we spend too much.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yeah, the tax cuts have been good, but you got
- 9:42Speaker 1: to cut spending too, and that has not happened. Senator
- 9:46Speaker 1: John Barrasso, thank you so much for joining us on
- 9:48Speaker 1: Sunday Morning Futures. We do appreciate it.
