- Lucas: Luna, welcome back. Today we're heading to the market again, but this time we're visiting the butchery. Luna: Oh, I love a good market visit. What are we learning? Lucas: You'll learn how to say 'Nataka nyama' — I want meat. And then specify which type. Luna: Nataka nyama. That's 'I want meat.' Got it. So if I wanted beef, how would I say that? Lucas: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Nyama ya ng'ombe is beef. Repeat after me: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Luna: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Nyama ya ng'ombe. Lucas: And chicken is 'Nyama ya kuku.' Nyama ya kuku. Luna: Nyama ya kuku. So 'ya' means 'of' basically? Lucas: Exactly. You're picking it up fast. Now, if you want to buy one kilo, you say 'Kilo moja.' Kilo moja. Luna: Kilo moja. So 'Nataka nyama ya kuku kilo moja' would be 'I want one kilo of chicken'? Lucas: Perfect. And then the seller will ask 'Bei gani?' — What price? So you need to know that one too. Luna: Bei gani? That's from our bargaining episode, right? Asking the price. Lucas: Right. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, you might want to support us. We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes. Luna: Yeah, it's really nice to have no interruptions. If you want to help keep it that way, the link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: So back to the butchery. Let's put it all together. I'll be the seller, you're the buyer. Luna: Okay, let's try. Nataka nyama. Lucas: Nyama gani? — Which meat? Luna: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Kilo moja. Lucas: Bei gani? — The seller says that to you. Luna: Oh right, so I ask 'Bei gani?' after they tell me the price? Or I wait for them to say it? Lucas: Usually they say 'Bei gani?' meaning 'What price do you want?' Actually it's a bit flexible. But you can also ask 'Bei gani?' to mean 'How much?' So after they say a price, you can bargain. Luna: Okay, so 'Bei gani?' is a good all-purpose question. Let's practice the whole thing again. Lucas: Sure. I'm the seller. You walk up. Go ahead. Luna: Nataka nyama ya kuku. Lucas: Ungetaka kilo ngapi? — How many kilos? Luna: Kilo moja. Lucas: Bei ni shilingi elfu kumi. — The price is ten thousand shillings. Luna: Bei gani? Oh, that's ten thousand. Okay. Lucas: You did great. Let's review the phrases one more time. Nataka nyama. Luna: Nataka nyama. Lucas: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Luna: Nyama ya ng'ombe. Lucas: Nyama ya kuku. Luna: Nyama ya kuku.
