- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11His Word, and show His love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Today we are in James chapter 2 and we're going to be in verses
- 0:20one through 13. Today.
- 0:22James chapter 2, verses one through 13.
- 0:25James, pastor of the church in Jerusalem.
- 0:28He's writing to some people that were once a part of his local
- 0:32church but had been scattered all throughout the Roman Empire
- 0:34as a result of persecution. And he is writing to these
- 0:39people that they are encountering a specific type of
- 0:42problem within their churches as they're all across the Roman
- 0:45Empire. And it's a recurring issue,
- 0:49namely that as they are worshipping and as these
- 0:54churches are getting together, there is a persistent temptation
- 1:00to favoritism, a persistent temptation of favoritism.
- 1:04And James here commands them in the name of Jesus that they
- 1:09would not simply love people that can do stuff for them, but
- 1:14that they would love those who can do nothing for them.
- 1:18And he even puts in some like practical reasons for why they
- 1:23would do this and why they would not simply love the rich.
- 1:28And he, he makes it very clear that showing favoritism in
- 1:36church is a incredibly offensive sin to a holy God.
- 1:42That has consequences. Now for you and I today we can
- 1:46do one of two things as we come to this passage.
- 1:48We can either look at it and say, OK, whatever.
- 1:54I enjoy whatever aspect of ministry that I love.
- 1:59I'm going to look at everyone that doesn't value what I do as
- 2:03much. And I'm going to judge them for
- 2:05not being as holy as I am in this particular scenario.
- 2:08So I'm just going to throw in like a random thing.
- 2:11Anyone that goes, Oh well, I love working in the nursery.
- 2:17I don't know if we have any of our nursery workers that listen
- 2:19to Tabernacle talk. If you do, thank you for serving
- 2:22in nursery. I, I deeply, really appreciate
- 2:25that, especially since I've got a kid in nursery.
- 2:27And So what you do benefits me and it benefits my wife whenever
- 2:35you serve in nursery. And I love that.
- 2:38Thank you so much for serving in that way.
- 2:40But let's say a person said, OK, I serve in the nursery and I'm
- 2:44going to become really embittered against everyone that
- 2:47doesn't serve in the nursery with me.
- 2:50And so as a result, I'm going to love the nursery workers and I'm
- 2:54going to look down on those that could serve in nursery.
- 2:56But don't I, I want to just like jump right in here right at the
- 3:00very beginning and say that is not the point of this.
- 3:04The point of this passage is not choose a new group of people to
- 3:10be your favorite and choose a new group of people to look down
- 3:14on. That is not the point of the
- 3:15passage. The point is the love that we
- 3:18are called to have in Jesus is universal and there will be
- 3:22people we naturally have more of an affinity for and people that
- 3:27we naturally kind of buck against and do not love as much.
- 3:31The point of this passage is have the love of Jesus in your
- 3:36interactions. Actually, right after this
- 3:39episode, you could go listen to the episodes from first John 3
- 3:45and 4 and you would get like the why behind the practical thing
- 3:52that we hear right here in James.
- 3:54So let me read through the passage and we'll look at a
- 3:57couple of things that we need for today.
- 3:59James chapter 2 verse #1 My brothers and sisters, do not
- 4:03show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious
- 4:08Lord Jesus Christ. And I do want to define
- 4:12favoritism for us real quick because it's going to come up so
- 4:16much in the passage, and I want to make sure that we're looking,
- 4:18we're thinking the same way about it.
- 4:21So favoritism, this would be partiality.
- 4:25This is something that is not found in God.
- 4:28There is no favoritism with God. That's mentioned in Romans 2 and
- 4:33verse 11, Ephesians 6 and verse #9 Colossians 2 and or sorry,
- 4:38Colossians 3 and verse 25. And then here in the book of
- 4:42James, God does not show partiality.
- 4:47He does not show favoritism towards anything.
- 4:52The New Living Translation would translate this phrase as
- 4:56favoring some people over others.
- 4:59The New American Standard would call this an attitude of
- 5:03personal favoritism. Or if you have maybe an older
- 5:08translation, you would see this phrased as a respect of persons
- 5:13that you like. You treat you think about one
- 5:17person with more love than another.
- 5:22This would be the same kind of sin that you would see exhibited
- 5:25in the life of Isaac and Rebecca, that Isaac loved Esau
- 5:31more than Jacob, and Rebecca loved Jacob more than Esau.
- 5:36Or going down a generation, Jacob loved Rachel and not Leah,
- 5:41and Jacob loved Joseph and Benjamin and not the ten other
- 5:46sons that he had. So we are called as Christians
- 5:52to not show favoritism as we hold on to the faith in our
- 5:57glorious Lord Jesus Christ. OK, what does this look like to
- 6:02show favoritism? Is it just you know, I love
- 6:05Samantha more than I love any other woman on earth.
- 6:08Is that favoritism? No.
- 6:10And as we dive into verse 2, we'll see that for if if someone
- 6:13comes into your meeting, into the assembly, into church and
- 6:18they are wearing a gold ring and they're dressed in fine clothes
- 6:22and a poor person dressed in filthy clothes also comes in.
- 6:26If you look with favor on the one wearing the fine clothes and
- 6:30say, sit here in a good place, and yet you say to the poor
- 6:34person, stand over there or sit here on the floor by my
- 6:37footstool. Haven't you made distinctions
- 6:41among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
- 6:47OK, what does favoritism looks like?
- 6:49Favoritism looks like benefiting, blessing, doing for
- 6:55other people, taking actions to actively to actively bless or
- 7:03honor one person or to actively degrade someone else or to
- 7:10demean them in some way. So it's hey, here's a nice place
- 7:13to sit. We're going to put the person
- 7:15that's got, you know, the Gucci clothes or the Armani clothing.
- 7:21They've got, you know, the Super nice shoes.
- 7:23We're going to put them right up here at the front of the church.
- 7:26Frankly, I, I might put it this way, you know, for a, for a
- 7:31church, you know, maybe they, all of their pictures or
- 7:35something at a church are always of like, you know, the most
- 7:39picturesque people and that the ones that look like they have it
- 7:44all together. And then you would never see
- 7:46anyone that maybe, you know, is a little bit older in their walk
- 7:52and, and you would never see old people on their social media
- 7:55feeds. But it's just appealing to, hey,
- 7:58we're cool. We're we're hip, we've got lots
- 8:01of money. And so come love us as a result
- 8:05of this superficial thing. As opposed to this person here
- 8:12that they're saying, OK, if you're poor, we don't want you
- 8:15in the nice places in the church.
- 8:17We're just going to stick you in the back somewhere.
- 8:20And so we ought to have a love that whether a person comes in
- 8:23and they've got, you know, if you will, they've got the suit
- 8:27and tie and they've got the nice watch and they're, you know, all
- 8:30put together. We shouldn't love and treat them
- 8:35better than we treat those that come in.
- 8:38And maybe they don't have a great home situation and maybe
- 8:44they've worn, you know, the same shirt and pants every week that
- 8:49they've been to church for for three years.
- 8:51That's OK. We love those people.
- 8:54We want them here. And we are not going to, if you
- 8:57will, have more of a care and love for the rich than we do for
- 9:04the poor. Now, this was something that
- 9:06they were able to act on like really, in really bad ways there
- 9:10in the 1st century. It's not something that we
- 9:12necessarily have as much nowadays.
- 9:16Or maybe honestly this might be something that as I continue to
- 9:19meditate on this, I can think of ways that it's like, Oh yeah,
- 9:23man, in this way and in this way we disenfranchise those that
- 9:28have less. One way that I've seen this
- 9:30played out in churches sometimes is, if you will, kind of a pay
- 9:34to play way of fellowship or group activities that everything
- 9:38costs money. And so there's money involved in
- 9:42the fellowship, there's money involved in, you know, if you
- 9:45want to go to a church activity, Oh well, you got to make sure
- 9:48that you've got money to be able to do it as opposed to centering
- 9:52your, your time together around conversation and fellowship and
- 9:58maybe outreach blessing, like those ways that you can involve
- 10:02everyone regardless of their financial status.
- 10:06It can be fun to do things with other believers, but kind of the
- 10:09bread and butter of a church's work together ought to be
- 10:15accessible to everyone regardless of their financial
- 10:19standing. So then in verse 5, James brings
- 10:23it down to a really practical level.
- 10:27He says, don't show favoritism. That's bad.
- 10:30You have made distinctions among yourselves.
- 10:33This is a person that I'll care for.
- 10:35This is a person that you know, he can sit on the floor.
- 10:39He says that's super messed up. You guys should not do that.
- 10:42And then he says, and if you refuse to hear like this
- 10:46pastoral counsel and rebuke, let me just get really practical
- 10:50with you guys. Verse 5 Listen, my dear brothers
- 10:53and sisters, didn't God choose the poor in this world to be
- 10:57rich in faith and heirs of the Kingdom?
- 11:00He has promised to those who love him.
- 11:02You can think, you know, blessed are the poor in spirit for
- 11:04theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. He says, didn't God choose the
- 11:08poor, not the rich? You know, it wasn't Herod, it
- 11:12wasn't Pilate, it wasn't Caesar that received the Lord.
- 11:16Instead it was people like, you know, Peter and the disciples
- 11:21that at times, you know, were, you know, hard pressed to pay
- 11:26taxes and different things like that.
- 11:28As you would read the one account in Scripture where the
- 11:31Pharisees tried to mess with Jesus and and with Peter and all
- 11:35of that. So God didn't choose those that
- 11:38are the richest. He chose just the anyone.
- 11:41And the poor have always had a recognition of the fact that
- 11:46this world is not their home and that they have to have a
- 11:49reliance on God. You can look at Jesus's remarks
- 11:52even in Mark, it's 10 or 11. We're talking to the rich young
- 11:56ruler, and the rich young ruler does not want to give up his
- 12:00stuff to follow Jesus. And Jesus says it's easier for a
- 12:04camel to enter the eye of a needle than for the rich to
- 12:08enter the Kingdom of heaven. And it shocked the apostles
- 12:11because that's not the way that the Jewish people thought at the
- 12:13time. And they said, how well, if the
- 12:16rich can't get in, then who can? And he says, well, with man it's
- 12:20impossible with, but with God, nothing is impossible.
- 12:23It's based on the goodness of God, not on material riches.
- 12:26Verse 6 James says to these people, yet you have dishonored
- 12:30the poor, these ones that God has chosen.
- 12:33He says, don't the rich oppress you and drag you into court?
- 12:37Don't they blasphemy the good name that was invoked over you?
- 12:41He says, these rich people are the ones that are actually
- 12:45dragging you into court and they're oppressing you and
- 12:48they're blaspheming the name of Jesus.
- 12:50And so why are you trying to like cozy on up to the rich when
- 12:56they mistreat you and they don't believe in Jesus And instead
- 13:01they are operating in in really, really bad ways, the kind of
- 13:06things that you would also see in First Corinthians 6 that's
- 13:08like, hey, if I'm wronged, instead of forgiveness and
- 13:11operating in love, I'm going to sue you, which was something
- 13:15that Paul was adamantly against. And he says, listen, you have a
- 13:19unbelieving world that is watching your interactions with
- 13:22one another, and it's bringing shame on the name of Jesus.
- 13:26And so James here very practically says, even if you're
- 13:28going to ignore what God has done simply for the fact that
- 13:32these people, whenever they get tired or frustrated with you or
- 13:36with you, you know, trying to just smooch up to him for their
- 13:39riches, they take you to court and they blasphemy the name of
- 13:44Jesus. So don't pursue them.
- 13:47Don't do that. Verse #8 Indeed, if you fulfill
- 13:50the royal law prescribed in the scripture, love your neighbor as
- 13:54yourself, you are doing well. He says the goal is love other
- 13:59people the way that you love yourself, whether they are rich
- 14:02or poor. This is not to say don't love
- 14:04the rich, but it's to say love them all as you love them as you
- 14:08love yourself and don't choose to love and bless those that you
- 14:14hope to get something from and then mistreat and malign those
- 14:18who can't do anything for you. Verse #9 If however, you show
- 14:22favoritism, you commit sin and are convicted by the law as
- 14:27transgressors. When you're showing favoritism,
- 14:29you're not loving your neighbor as yourself.
- 14:32Instead, you're loving yourself through manipulating your
- 14:35neighbor. Verse #10 for whoever keeps the
- 14:38entire law and yet stumbles at one point is guilty of breaking
- 14:42it all. For he who said don't commit
- 14:44adultery also said don't murder. So if you don't commit adultery
- 14:49but you murder, you are a law breaker.
- 14:51He says you're sinning in this area.
- 14:54And you might be like, well, I haven't committed adultery.
- 14:57I haven't committed idolatry. I haven't, you know, denounced
- 15:00the name of Jesus. Am I really like a law breaker?
- 15:03Is this really sin? It's not that bad.
- 15:05And James says, listen, if you break 1 portion of the law, in
- 15:10this instance, the portion of the law that says love your
- 15:12neighbor as yourself, he says if you break any portion of the
- 15:15law, you are a Sinner. You are a law breaker.
- 15:18This is the same truth that we know even in relation to our
- 15:21salvation. It's why no one is exempt from
- 15:25the punishment that we all deserve for our sin.
- 15:28That whether you are murderer and adulterer and idolater, if
- 15:32you, you know, have dishonored your parents, if you do not love
- 15:38your neighbor as yourself, no matter what your sin is, we are
- 15:41all condemned as a result of sin.
- 15:43And so James says, don't pursue sin.
- 15:45Instead pursue love. Verse 12 Speak and act as those
- 15:50who are to be judged by the law of freedom.
- 15:54He says God's word is going to judge you on that day of the
- 15:58Bema seat judgement when you stand before the judgement seat
- 16:01of Christ and he says so I want you to talk and act like God's
- 16:08law is going to judge you because it is it's a law of
- 16:11freedom. We read that in chapter 1.
- 16:13It's not a law of oppression. You are judged and not by your
- 16:17religious minutia. You're judged by whether or not
- 16:20you have loved others, and so talk and act like you are going
- 16:25to be judged by your love. Verse 13 For judgment is without
- 16:30mercy to the one who has not shown mercy, mercy triumphs over
- 16:36judgment. Here's what's being said.
- 16:41Mercy is God's like He loves to show mercy.
- 16:46We read that in Jonah 4. That's Exodus over and over and
- 16:49over again. God does not want anyone to
- 16:52perish, but that everyone would come to repentance.
- 16:54So He loves mercy and showing mercy.
- 16:58However, if we do not have love or mercy, then all that is left
- 17:03for us. So God walks in the way of mercy
- 17:06and love and forgiveness. If we walk in that path,
- 17:09wonderful, then when we are judged on that day, we will be
- 17:15able to praise Jesus for what He has done in and through us
- 17:19through His Holy Spirit, you know, bringing out love in our
- 17:22lives. But if we have resisted the
- 17:23Spirit and we have not walked in God's way of love and we have
- 17:26walked in harshness and favoritism and and hatred and
- 17:31apathy and lack of love towards others, especially those within
- 17:35our local church, then it says judgment will be without mercy.
- 17:40That we will, as Paul would say it in First Corinthians, yeah,
- 17:44we'll make it through the judgement seat of Christ because
- 17:48we are found in Christ and we will be saved.
- 17:53He says yet so as by fire, that if you will, we're going to come
- 17:58through and we're going to smell a little smoky.
- 18:00We've gone through that forge and instead of the result of our
- 18:04life being gold, silver, and precious stones, as we read in
- 18:07Second Timothy 2, it will be wood, hay, and stubble that will
- 18:11all burn up. That the motives and actions of
- 18:15our our heart and our life. They were all selfish and they
- 18:18were not done out of love for others.
- 18:20They were done out of a love for just ourselves.
- 18:23And so in that day, we have nothing to show for it, nothing
- 18:27to show for our actions. So let us walk in the path of
- 18:30love and mercy and practical care and love for others in a
- 18:35way that does not disenfranchise others.
- 18:37Now, I'm certain as we're going through this, I'm going to be
- 18:43praying after I end this episode.
- 18:45Like, Lord, would you show me what this looks like in my life?
- 18:47Can you show me what favoritism looks like for Brian's self?
- 18:52And I'd encourage you pray for that as well because I know that
- 18:56all of God's word is practical for each of us.
- 19:01But because I'm not living in a, you know, Messianic Jewish
- 19:05congregation 2000 years ago, some of the specifics are going
- 19:09to be different for me. I don't tell people where to sit
- 19:12in church. And So what favoritism looks
- 19:15like in my life is going to be different.
- 19:17And what favoritism looks like in your life is going to be
- 19:19different. It's not kindness that's being
- 19:22condemned here. It's partiality towards one
- 19:26against another, if you will. It's I'm choosing to be good to
- 19:31someone else and I'm choosing to neglect someone else.
- 19:35Let us not operate in that way, but let's operate in a love that
- 19:39says, OK, I'm going to love you and I'm going to do for you what
- 19:43I would want done for me in this situation.
- 19:47So let's pray together and let's ask God to guide us in the way
- 19:50that we need to go. Thanks for tuning in.
- 19:52We'll pick up in verse #14 tomorrow.
