Latest / Cleaning Business Life / MTM EP #4| How Do You Train Your First Hire From 90 Minutes Away?
Transcript
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Welcome back everyone to the cleaning business live.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: I am your co-host, Jamie Runko, with Above All Cleaning Services up in Northern rural Northern California, that is.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Uh we are in a we are um doing a series of episodes of March to a Million, and this is our fourth episode, and today we are going to be talking about the first hire.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: And in past episodes, we talked about what the first day of training was.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Sorry, you guys on my hands.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you're totally fine.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: And this time I would like to talk about because this is all as we're experiencing it.
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: Jamie is um and I I haven't really hired anyone yet.
- 2:01SPEAKER_01: I've looked at people, I've interviewed people, but I haven't hired anyone officially.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm hoping to do that next month.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: But there's always the concept of running remotely.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: How do I how am I gonna have a training house?
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: I live 90 minutes away from this location.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: Am I gonna have them drive up to my house and do training houses up here?
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I got plenty of them up here of people willing to do it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_01: But facilitating the the first hire, right?
- 2:30SPEAKER_01: How do I train this person?
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: I like them, I've hired them, I've background checked them, I've done all the bells and whistles, and you're like, well, how do I train, right?
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: So there's this concept of, and it seems to be like, I don't want to say a dirty secret, but it seems to be a secret secret.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: Like no one wants to come out and say how it's done.
- 2:49SPEAKER_01: Now, this won't cover all of the nitty-gritty, but it'll give you some basics um because coloring is done in the structure, scale, and profit cleaning business academy, which by the way, if you have the scholarship is live.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: If you want a chance to win the scholarship, I've done it for five or six years in a row.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: Don't forget to apply.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And even if you don't think that you'll have a chance, apply anyway.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: 372 people applied last year.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited to see.
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: I hope we hit the 500 mark.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: We'll see.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Um what I wanted to talk about for me, and logistically speaking, was how in the heck was I gonna have train?
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: How was I gonna train these people?
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: There's no training facility for cleaners down in Phoenix that I know of.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Send them over there.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: So where they can go to school, right, where they can go to school for the day, and they come, they come back and they're all equipped to be prepared to be cleaning techs.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: That does that's not a capacity that we have in this industry, but I did give a lot of thought over how I was going to validate and train them.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: So what I have proposed, and this could flop on its face, it's a really great idea in the concept, and I will be trying this out, is I'm going to take on secret shopper homes that are training homes.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: And their job is to validate that cleaner.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: So that cleaner will go on the schedule.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: They'll either know it's a training home or they'll not know it's a training home, and they'll have to go and clean it.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: So there's gonna be prep that's involved to get them to that stage.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: I know that a lot of the cleaning industry is learned by doing, but I'm going to video a lot of things.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: So there's gonna be a course that I'm gonna create.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: It's nothing like what Angela Brown has done or Cheryl Tinberg.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be for just for the employees of Presky Tidy Clean and the Tidy Clean Empire.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And it's gonna go over day one, what expectations are, day two, da da da, day three.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: And then when they go into the house, they should have some basic skills on what chemicals we're using, how to use them, why we use them in this order, what order we're doing this, and it's gonna kind of break things down so it'll be at a distance.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: So the very first person, um, my son doesn't listen to this podcast, is he's actually gonna be a um, he's agreed to be a secret shopper and a training house.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: And he actually worked on me when he was like 15, 16, so he kind of knows what to look for.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: And then I'm hiring in, not hiring, I'm having people apply to become one.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: And then those guys will be the the the boots on the ground per se, because I'm not gonna train any of them.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So what will happen is once a week I will go down physically initially, um, until I've worked out all the kinks, and I will validate them at a house.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: So I'll walk up to a house and I will tell the homeowner that I'm coming that day, and I'll kind of go over there.
- 5:52SPEAKER_01: I would like to eliminate that piece entirely so I'm not physically required to show up and be present, but I think initially, just until I work out all the kinks, um, that's what I'm gonna do.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm philosophizing with the the Gilbert market.
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: I think that's a great idea, but we're also in 2026.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: This is way different than what you were doing uh 10 years ago.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Definitely yeah, so there's some great, and I think we probably should maybe uh if everybody's interested, even you Shannon, uh, probably have uh a series or uh a podcast about what kind of um technology we need.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: Because we are technology.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we are in a day and age right now where that it's all systematized.
- 6:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Um loom, loom is a great thing where you can sit there and record yourself and say, hey, we gotta do this.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Also, inside of Jobber, they now have it to where you can build out these wonderful checklists and they cannot, they can't pass go, they can't clock out, they can't do anything until all of those things are checked off.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: Checked off.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: However, you know, it's easy to be once you get it down, like, okay, let me do the pictures, click, click, click, click.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: So, what I've implemented because it's so easy to just check that off, is now actually having a physical, I don't know what, I don't have one right now, but having a physical uh client-facing checklist.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Yes, they have it where yeah, they have it and uh the cleaning tech signs off on it.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: That could be a really great idea.
- 7:50SPEAKER_01: But I love this idea because um like what to look for if you're a client, if it's totally client fancy.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: So, what to look for on the toilet, what to look for on your floor, how to see if you see fingerprints or crumbs on the counter, how to know if your towels have been refolded versus not folded.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: Do I touch the bed?
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Do I not touch the bed?
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Did they touch my bed?
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: Did they look underneath the bed?
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: There's all of the nuances that we think.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: It's like the 27 ways of making a bed, right?
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: There's all of these steps because there's all of these priorities.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: So I thought it would I would build out a client-facing checklist for them that could be digital, that they go check, check, check, and then the person who is there, the cleaning tech, can sign off on it that way until we get big enough to add on all the bells and whistles for get Jobber.
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And yeah, uh, once that happened, Jobber has really I think I've looked at some of the stuff and like literally put in all the notes.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: All the notes that you like, and the client don't have to see that part, but yeah, it's but with Loom, uh is a really big one, and you know, how do you want your your towels folded, screenshot it, you know, or take a picture of it.
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: Uh it's very great.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm glad that you're bringing this up.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Um I this has been a thought of mine running through my own head about how would you how do people do this out now?
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: This is 90 minutes away.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: My sister is over in Colorado, right?
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: Another state, I a whole nother state, a whole nother learning process, and this has just been a thought in my head, like, and she would be so on board.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Um, I would make her just joking, Kelly, because I know you listened to these.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Um uh I I think the this is such a great avenue to go down.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Um Yeah, I thought maybe metaglasses were, you know, they they go through the motion because AI, everyone wants to pay you 20 bucks an hour for AI to film whatever.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: I figured that I could have one of some of my my I have three really strong and cleaning techs.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: I figured I could get them to wear the meta glasses for today, I could pay them extra, and I could film and edit whatever it was that they were doing so that it would be beneficial, or I could dump it into AI and AI could do whatever it does depending on the size of the file.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Um, and then that way that would be like this is this house looks like this.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: This is what we do here, here, here, and here, left to right, top to bottom, that type of thing.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Because now you're you're you're you utilizing your your speed cleaning, our speed cleaning method that everybody uses, or or most everybody uses, um, in the cleaning business industry.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: But yeah, we're in the day and age of technology and it is crazy.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: And I don't want to get away from having to have in-person one-on-one training.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: It's such a waste, it's not a waste of labor because I feel that you the the cleaning techs are an investment, but I think that that labor could be better utilized with something else.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: What are your thoughts?
- 11:34SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: I exactly.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Well, um if you've listened to the other podcast of the March to the Million, I am in a season of hiring a lot right now.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Um I don't do any of the training.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Um, but one-on-one, uh I I it's more I'm starting to lean more towards group training.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: What if you could get it to where they're like it was just like you eliminated a lot of the group stuff?
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Like you still need it, I think to some degree.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: But what if you could eliminate all the extra steps so that they're watching videos and they're learning that way?
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: So there's not a lot of I don't want to take the human-to-human contact out of it, but I would like to eliminate what that is so that it's more streamlined.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: I guess I don't know.
- 12:27SPEAKER_00: It comes this all all of this comes down to systems.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: This all comes down to a system being put in place, and you know exactly what you want.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and you know what to look for now.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: Uh it's just you're doing it remotely.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: That that is just uh that's great.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: I I it makes me curious.
- 12:53SPEAKER_00: It's like, well, I'm ready to I think I'm ready to do remote, you know?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Uh it gives a lot of people and then that we're doing this live, you know, that's what's also great, too.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, eliminating a lot of that would and eliminate a lot of cost too.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I I'm not denying that it's an investment.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Cleaning techs need the investment, it's super absolutely but it's and company culture, yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: And company culture, and that we need that connection because even as cleaning business owners, cleaning techs be if you're using the solo model, it's a lonely existence.
- 13:33SPEAKER_01: You the only engagement you have is with the customer, and if they're busy on the phone, you're not getting any engagement, they're you're just on automatic doing your thing, which is fine, but if you need that connection, it's not there.
- 13:45SPEAKER_01: Um, so I figured I would have like training houses, and then if they wanted to become a secret shopper, because secret shopper does something different.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: If you haven't heard of the concept of secret shopper, it is discussed in the structure, scale and profit cleaning business academy.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: It's been a long time thing, and and you need to have secret shoppers for a lot of reasons to fill in your schedule, to make sure that you're it's like quality control.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Um, when I worked in the restaurant industry, we would have secret shoppers come in there and make sure that you hit all of the points of contact.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: I have 15 points of flair, right?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: And you would always never you never knew who this the you know the secret shopper was, so you had to make sure you hit the table, you had to make sure that they had drinks, you had to make sure they had a coaster, you had to make sure, you know, serve from the left, take from the right, the whole thing.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: There was all of these nuances.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: And I think that that happens with cleaners.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: I don't think that they should know that they have a secret shopper, but they should have to pass a validation test.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: And it shouldn't be constant because then you go down the rabbit hole of constant criticism, right?
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: I don't wanna, well, they didn't take the I see it all the time with cleaning business owners.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: They didn't take the criticism.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I go, well, every time you talk to them when all you're doing is criticizing them, I wouldn't want to talk to you either.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, yeah.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: It's just like give me a break.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: That's a that's another learning curve too, though.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Some people don't know how to give feedback.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: I honestly do not know how to lead or train or any of that.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: Um but lessons I I really do like you like we said, I uh it's the day and age where um we what lessons can be effectively learned through video, right?
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: And there's actually a quite a bit cleaning is very much learned by doing because when you conceptualize watching the video, yeah, you could watch me show you how to clean a toilet, but you're not gonna remember all the steps unless you do.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: I'm a very much a doer type of learner, and not everybody is that way.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: I'm I like both, but I if if I'm gonna really learn something fast, I'm going to do it versus watching.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: But I'm trying to get away from with this market, with what I'm doing, the concept of not having for them to do so much, and that they're doing by doing, not like doing by me saying it, okay, now you're gonna mimic what I'm doing because I think now move your left waste labor that way.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: No, very much so.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: I get you know, um again, it just comes down to making sure all your systems are in place before like um building out the class for it is like been a lot.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: There's like, hey, this is what we do.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's I didn't first I was like, it'll just be a couple five-minute videos.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: There are video after video after video after video.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: I'm like, am I done?
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: No, video, it's not something I'm selling, it's just for the employees for them to sign in and learn.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's like you're watching your own structure scale profit cleaning academy and going back and implementing it yourself.
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: I had to do such things.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: So what are you doing?
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: What how are you, what are you what are you doing to hire?
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: What are you implementing?
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: I am um after you and I discuss the indeed thing, I'm going to dabble with the free account um just because I'm curious.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Because you know me, I'm always curious about how things work, why they work, what's going on after they work.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and I I think I'm gonna start to um throw some stones in the water and see or a hook um and see if I get any nibbles.
- 17:40SPEAKER_01: I like I said in the other podcast, I'm starting to get some calls, so I'm figuring out the market, and eventually I'd like to hand over the sales part to a sales team.
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: But since we're new and we're, you know, starting from the beginning, um, I figured I would do it first so I could learn what the market will bear and what the market won't bear.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: Um and then I'm gonna make SOPs to go along with it just to like have everything strategized because again, as you and I have talked, getting it out of your head because there is there is like 10 steps to closing the sale, right?
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Step one, take their name.
- 18:14SPEAKER_01: Step two, are they in our service area?
- 18:16SPEAKER_01: Step three, what is their phone number?
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: What is their best email, right?
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: I actually have see uh this like like I yeah, sales is a big part of our it's huge.
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: Um right now I'm still building out all of those those positions and um because I I'm to where I need I need help in the office now.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Now it's like okay, wait a minute.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: Um, but getting out of the field exposed all of those um oh that's what I need.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, it's again stepping into a CEO role instead of the cleaner anymore.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Um when do you think um do you guys have mom groups there?
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: Um whenever I'm trying to think of back whenever I first started hiring, I would just throw stuff out.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: I've been people have um there's a job board that I'm on down there.
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: So when they are like I'm looking for a job and I would message them, I'm like, have you ever considered cleaning as a skilled trade?
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: And they're like, What do you mean?
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And then I give them the spiel.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Sometimes they're like, Oh, because I'm offering more money than what everyone else is paying down there.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And um they're like, Well, that I go uh you no commitment, you you either you either love it or you don't.
- 19:45SPEAKER_01: They're they're not gonna get excited like Jamie and I.
- 19:47SPEAKER_01: Oh right?
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: So um I I've been doing that.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Um I am part of a couple of mom groups.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Uh I've just been kind of watching to see what's allowed, what's not allowed.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: But uh anything I'm doing is private.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: I don't want to ruffle anyone's feathers by overstepping because some groups are a little more uh than others.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: And but the the biggest hurdle I was trying to figure out because I don't I don't physically want to go down at all unless I absolutely have to.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, if I go down, I get to have lunch with my son or anyone else I want to visit down there, which is totally fine with me.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: But I physically do not have any intention of lifting the mop.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: Absolutely no.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: This is I think initially too, I've also decided that I won't be doing any move out cleanings until I get a stronger team.
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: Because it does, as you know, take six to ten move-out cleanings before you're proficient in doing them.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: So um and there's a lot of things that can go wrong.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: I'm like, we're just gonna do regular maintenance initially.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: That's what the the business model is gonna entail.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: Um I you almost need uh we're getting we're to where it's like you need a deep cleaning crew initial cleans or uh move out crew, a move out cleaning clean.
- 21:12SPEAKER_01: But just like with commercial and short-term rental, I think that it's gonna separate into its own thing.
- 21:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I agree.
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, because it does.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: I don't like using up the manpower and having my team exhausted for the rest of the remainder of the week trying to do catching up with their reoccurring clients.
- 21:37SPEAKER_00: You know, they're just it takes so much out of them.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: It does.
- 21:41SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, and uh not to say that they're not proficient because they absolutely are.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: Uh and I can I can sometime sometimes I can schedule uh, you know, seven jobs with uh two deep cleans, uh two initial cleans, sometimes, you know.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: It's just uh but we're growing and we're starting to get to where it's like, oh, 14 jobs a day.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: Oh, oh, you know, it's just um but I want to know when is the Gilbert uh when when have you put the listing of indeed for hiring?
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: Is it live?
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: I put as a tentative October November is what um the goal is, November 1st.
- 22:34SPEAKER_01: So we'll see if I can get it all together by then.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: I am waiting for um some legal paperwork to come in from the state to because you have to register and do all the other stuff.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Uh yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: So um the fun stuff.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, all of the legal, you know, it takes a while for it to go through the process of whatever they whatever the state people do, I have no idea.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Um Well, at least you're running running legally.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: I'm dabbling over here, and then I'm bringing it back, and then I'm dabbling it over here, then I'm bringing it back, and then I'm like, okay, but the concept of like how do I how do I hire someone?
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: I obviously you can hire someone anyone now because of Zoom and everything, Loom and everybody else.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: That's not the hard part.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: The hard part is how do you get the information that you know that you already have together in your app.
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: Assets to the person who without doing it in person.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: That was the biggest challenge.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: And then I was like, training houses.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: Well, that's great.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: And indeed, um, they call it sponsorship.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: It's it's and you I both with the I'm gonna pause just for a second.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: This guy.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Can you hear that?
- 23:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this is a lawnmower.
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh with the big exhaust.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Um indeed, uh, the sponsorship and I what I have done is I run two ads.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Um one is free, one is paid.
- 24:03SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's called a sponsorship.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: With that sponsorship, you can pause it and you can let it roll, and then you like pause and then you let it roll.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: Um within minutes, within minutes, I I I had 15 applications and I was just like, whoa! But the paid version, you can also structure it up to message an interview like through Indeed, right then and there, like on a video.
- 24:37SPEAKER_01: Um I think that's awesome.
- 24:39SPEAKER_01: So are you using Indeed as your funnel, or are they able to apply on your website?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: How are you doing that for the people who don't have both you and I have discussed this a thousand and one times, but for the people who are listening, tell them what your process is without making it over?
- 24:52SPEAKER_00: I started off, I started off with just uh JOT form.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and then couldn't uh had Sarah connect it to my website because I don't know how to do all that stuff.
- 25:06SPEAKER_00: Um she's helped me a lot.
- 25:09SPEAKER_00: So she built out the application.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: I I sent like I told her what I wanted to, you know, ask and all this and that.
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: Um I think it's a little more outdated now, um, especially where I'm at in my business, because now I think of beyond that a little bit, and there's nothing wrong with if you're doing that way now.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm just a little bit further along in the um business.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: So uh with indeed I I did a I just started this uh probably a month ago and I tried the first uh free one and I just started getting applications, but I noticed that and no, like yes, I hire men, um, but not the right men were applying is what I'm trying.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: So I had to reword it.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: Um it's like key notes to where it would bring down a little bit.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Um I let them know that, you know, hey, want a job that has a great workout, you know.
- 26:27SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think that people that are coming onto Indeed, it's they're looking at it like, what how is this gonna benefit me?
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: What are you gonna do for me?
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And um, so I kind of geared that towards them, uh, the free version.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: And then I'm like, you know, let's try this paid version, um, a little bit different.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: And um with that, you can see if they follow instructions.
- 26:59SPEAKER_00: Um so after they put in their application and send resume, because you're guys, you guys are gonna get if you're running indeed, um, indeed, uh, you're gonna get people that are just click, click, click, click, click, click, you know, they're just going down.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: They don't care that you're in the area, they're clicking, so you can reject it.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: Um, but if they're clicking through and they're not really truly interested in what you post it, they're just looking for a job.
- 27:34SPEAKER_00: I just had one that said, not really interested, just need the money.
- 27:39SPEAKER_00: Next.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: But he did, he did pay attention.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: But they were honest, yeah.
- 27:45SPEAKER_00: He did pay attention to the next phase.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: So there's a okay, you got I got your application.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Let's see if they can follow instructions and I set up a series of questions.
- 27:57SPEAKER_00: Are you comfortable driving uh Humboldt County?
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Um, are you do you have your driver's license?
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Can you give me uh a solid three days strictly for here?
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: Because I, you know, part-time.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: Um uh and then if they don't answer, that tells me that they're not, they're just going down the line, they're not paying attention to the questions.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: Does that make sense?
- 28:27SPEAKER_01: It does make sense.
- 28:28SPEAKER_01: Um, and there are people who are just fulfilling whatever because they're on unemployment and they're looking for that obligation to fulfill to get that that point of it too.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: So I I think it's awesome to um, so I am gonna start with the indeed.
- 28:43SPEAKER_01: I figured I would start to look now.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: I'm not really in a big hurry.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: I have plenty of time.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Where we're in September right now.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: I think I have 45, 50 days to figure out um what's gonna happen, what's not gonna happen, and then um kind of go from there.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: But I the biggest hurdle um in my mind, and it's not really a hurdle, it's just logistics trying to figure it out was if after I hire them, because we can hire anywhere now, we don't have to even when you hire C's and you're hiring VAs, if they're gonna be the face of your company, you want to see what they look like, you just don't know, right?
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Um, so just getting those kinds of things, like you know, for example, which lessons can be taught effectively through through video?
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: We were talking about the bathrooms, right?
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Can they watch a whole series of videos on cleaning a bathroom and understand what that really entails?
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can encourage them to practice on their own bathroom.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: I you know, we still see business owners that put toilet bowl cleaner everywhere, and I'm like, what are you doing?
- 29:47SPEAKER_00: And again, but right, exactly.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: And this comes back to um we need to do a podcast of the things that we the technology, the apps, the uh things that you actually have to have in order to um there's things like trainable, um, scribble, uh, connect team, connect teams geared towards more free, and they have lessons inside of there and what your company culture is.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: So those could be very well good good ideals.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: Um, since I had Clean Freaks University, I could just use that as my training platform.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:26SPEAKER_00: Well because it has a mobile app for now.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: You because you know your technologies, I I I think you're light years ahead of people on on that aspect.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: And knowing how to you know how to do a YouTube video.
- 30:42SPEAKER_00: Like most of us out here, we have no idea how to edit and and put upload into YouTube, and nor like did we ever want to, but yeah, no, it's a it's a lot, it's it's changed a lot too.
- 30:56SPEAKER_01: Like it used to have to be all done by hand, like with the podcast before we had Riverside, right?
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, Riverside.
- 31:02SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Riverside.
- 31:04SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Riverside.
- 31:06SPEAKER_01: It's way easier than Zoom in iMovie, right?
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: iMovie, yes.
- 31:11SPEAKER_00: That's so funny.
- 31:12SPEAKER_00: I got goosebumps from that.
- 31:14SPEAKER_01: Look right, it's just like we've come a long way.
- 31:16SPEAKER_01: You have no idea what we used to do.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: More like what Shannon used to do, because you uh that does uh I think you were way 10 steps ahead of your your time before your time, and you you caught on to uh the um gosh, even uh AI way before I did, and I was like, oh I I I came a couple months after you, but then I was just like, wow, right, no came out.
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: Once you figure it out, I'm like, oh my god, and then plugging numbers in and just analyzing and doing oh, I'm like I don't even know how people ran without it now.
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: It's so crazy, it's so crazy the lessons that we've learned along the way, but yeah, uh you're pretty good at that already.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 32:11SPEAKER_00: You have a platform already that you know, your your mission statements, your core values, hiring on that.
- 32:21SPEAKER_00: You already know all that stuff, you know, and uh you have a leg up on it because you already have a platform that you can sit here and say, okay, here is my training manual.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: Basically, now is a video.
- 32:37SPEAKER_00: And um, wow.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: I it just it gives me goosebumps because I'm I'm excited.
- 32:45SPEAKER_00: I know you're probably just nervous as heck though, Shannon, huh?
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: It's uh I'm a little as I mentioned um before, I'm a little I and it's only because I I've been out of having W-2s for a while, so I just want to make sure that I'm legal and I'm not going to accidentally do something uh in the wrong area for the wrong thing.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: I I think that for the most part I I have a really solid foundation of what I'm doing, but there's a lot more building out this time than the last two times.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, when I had Castle Keeper Cleaning, like legit, I'm like, okay, oh, I'm giving up, I'm gonna drink some coffee, I'm gonna hit the ground running, right?
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: That was legitimately my plan.
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Every day I went out and hit the ground running.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: And then when I got when I had Maid Broker, there was already systems in place.
- 33:34SPEAKER_01: I had a really good generalization of a platform.
- 33:37SPEAKER_01: I knew what I was doing, but that was not W-2s.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Now I'm going back, now I'm gonna have two, right?
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna have Northern Arizona, which is only gonna be 1099, and then Southern Arizona, which will be a W-2 platform.
- 33:51SPEAKER_01: So I want to make sure that you know that I'm up to par on expectations so that I am legal and I'm not doing anything incorrectly.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: So there's a little bit of little bit, but other than that, I think once I get refreshed, I should be good to go.
- 34:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, I love the confidence.
- 34:08SPEAKER_00: I do, I love the confidence, and I I I just uh analysis paralysis, watch out for that.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Um what about what about this?
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: What about this, right?
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: So, and then thinking of like what standards they need to pass when they validate.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: That was like the probably the biggest question I had out of all of them, because there are certain standards.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: There's your there's your standards, there's my standards.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Like you might like to have the pillows karate chopped on the top, and I like to have squished from the side, right?
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: There's just preferences on what those standards are.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Like you better, you better watch out because Shannon likes some squished from the, you know, squished from the top, right?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Why'd you walk past the trash, right?
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, and that's again, that's where all that digital comes in so handy.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: And especially with the millennial uh era, um they they know all this digital stuff.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: So we gotta keep up on one step forward with it.
- 35:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I think uh people feel more comfortable and confident with they open up their phone and oh, here's all the notes.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 35:24SPEAKER_00: This is how this is how this house is supposed to be.
- 35:27SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, it's gonna this is this is gonna be exciting.
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: I'm excited.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I'm excited too.
- 35:36SPEAKER_01: And um, like I said, I'm just a little, little, I just the I think the employee piece will be the hardest part to get back, you know, into familiar territory.
- 35:45SPEAKER_01: I don't think it'll be anything like that.
- 35:48SPEAKER_00: Well, that's cool that you're you're like actually doing your homework on like you know me, where I'm like, okay, I'm gonna do this.
- 35:56SPEAKER_00: I mean, the second that the second I did it, I was like, I want to be big.
- 36:00SPEAKER_00: Um, and I think a lot of people that have it, uh there are other people out there just like me and you, like they they got it.
- 36:12SPEAKER_00: Like they know I will not I and no no shade thrown to solopreneurs if you if that's what the direction that you wanted to go in.
- 36:25SPEAKER_00: There's nothing wrong with that.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: If you don't want to deal with hiring and fight, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: It's playing in it safe, really.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Um I I'm I like to live on the edge, and I just I knew this was the business model for me, and this was the business that I wanted to be in, and I instantly knew that I wanted to be big.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: And uh if you can dream it, right?
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: If you dream it, it comes into fruitation, you know, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, definitely.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: I am a firm believer of mindset and consistency and intention.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: It's um you'd be surprised.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: I only wish that they taught this stuff when we were in school.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: We'd be so much farther along.
- 37:09SPEAKER_00: Right, like I how I just right?
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: I wish they really would.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: Or, you know, yeah, I really wish they would.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Oh, I um so that's that's where I'm at with um with that right now, and then um that's all I have, really.
- 37:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I you guys, I uh you know that I'm an open book.
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: You guys can come and talk to me.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: Um, I will tell you yay or nay.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: I I don't right now I am still knee deep in running this office.
- 37:44SPEAKER_00: I'm working on my area of working is kind of tightening up our uh ad posts for hiring.
- 37:55SPEAKER_00: Um again, we're still growing, but am I growing in a different way?
- 38:01SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm also making uh building out a an assistant, I guess, maybe office manager, HR, something.
- 38:13SPEAKER_00: I need to delegate something, uh, and it's coming.
- 38:17SPEAKER_00: Um, I'm also working really hard on um, you know, our clear training manual, hiring uh their career path for our people, SOPs, all that fun stuff that comes with the territory.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: If you're just now beginning in your business, you guys start documenting everything.
- 38:41SPEAKER_00: I never understood what that meant really, whenever I first started this.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: You want to start documenting in your business for what you want your business to look like for tomorrow from a year from now.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: That way it's whenever it'll all come together.
- 39:03SPEAKER_00: And now that we are in the day and age with Chat GPT, Claude, there's other AI out there.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Um right now I I'm implementing Quo, uh, which is used to be open for open phones, um, they have Sona in there.
- 39:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I named her Emily.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: And uh, but you want to document everything now so that whenever it comes, like for me, you're I'm almost five years in, and uh I'm just now starting to put all these things that were so caught up in my head out.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: Finally.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna tell you, AI has helped significantly with that, with organizing it, and and it can do that for you guys too.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So, but just make sure that you're implementing or documenting what you want and how you want your what what you're standing for and and what your your business is about uh now so that tomorrow it's whenever you go to hire and bring people on and abore aboard, you're you're organized, basically.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: So that's what I'm working on right now.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's awesome.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: Working on a lot, yeah.
- 40:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I am too.
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: I am too.
- 40:29SPEAKER_00: I get up every day, you guys know that I have this super awesome uh office, and I cannot tell you how excited I get up in the morning to go to work.
- 40:40SPEAKER_00: Me.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: That's never happened before.
- 40:44SPEAKER_00: So it's awesome.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Well, that's all we have today, folks.
- 40:48SPEAKER_01: Don't forget, now is your chance to apply for the scholarship.
- 40:51SPEAKER_01: We'll leave that link inside of the description in the show notes.
