- 0:00If only I had that, then I could be content.
- 0:04Idols will never give us the hope, the comfort that we want.
- 0:09Christ has really set us free. He knows that whatever else we
- 0:13worship will not give us the joy that only He can.
- 0:17You'll get farther in your life if you'll do things in the
- 0:21Lord's way. If you had one month left to
- 0:29live, what would you do? What would be on your bucket
- 0:32list? Maybe for some of us, assuming
- 0:35that you're healthy and you have plenty of money, maybe your
- 0:36bucket list might look something like this.
- 0:39Go to Hawaii, drive a Ferrari, eat more tacos, meet Taylor
- 0:42Swift. I don't know.
- 0:43For me, the first three I would love to do.
- 0:45Meet Taylor Swift wouldn't be on my list, but maybe spend an hour
- 0:48with Jonathan Rumi. I don't know.
- 0:50But Moses's bucket list looked very different.
- 0:54His was all about giving speeches.
- 0:57Maybe some of you have a parent or a grandparent.
- 0:59You're like, yeah, that's kind of sounds like probably what my
- 1:01grandma or mom would want to do in her last month, just give a
- 1:04lot of speeches. Moses wants to drive it into
- 1:07everyone's heart what he's been trying to share with them this
- 1:10whole time. That's what we see in the book
- 1:13of Deuteronomy. In our timeline, we're at the
- 1:16end of the 40 years in the wilderness.
- 1:18The Israelites are about to enter into the Promised Land.
- 1:21The name Deuteronomy means second law or repetition of the
- 1:26law. Moses is going to try to write
- 1:29into the hearts of the Israelites the words of the Lord
- 1:32that have been so meaningful to him.
- 1:33Now, something interesting about the book of Deuteronomy is that
- 1:37it was very popular in the Dead Sea Scrolls.
- 1:40You might remember we talked about the Dead Sea Scrolls in
- 1:42our first class and there are multiple copies of certain
- 1:46books. So amongst the Dead Sea Scrolls,
- 1:48the most frequently copied book was the Psalms, followed by
- 1:52Deuteronomy. So clearly the Qumran community
- 1:56found great strength in the book of Deuteronomy, and so did Jesus
- 2:00Christ. It's one of the three books most
- 2:02frequently quoted by him. In fact, during the temptations
- 2:06that Jesus faced from the devil, each temptation Jesus responded
- 2:10to by quoting from Deuteronomy. As you remember Satan said to
- 2:13Christ, if if you are the Son of God, command these stones to
- 2:17become loaves of bread. Jesus responded, it is written,
- 2:201 does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes
- 2:25from the mouth of God. Quoting from Deuteronomy chapter
- 2:288. Then the devil took Jesus to the
- 2:30temple and said to him, if you are the Son of God, throw
- 2:33yourself down, for it is written he will command his angels
- 2:37concerning you. The Savior responded it is also
- 2:40written do not put the Lord your God to the test.
- 2:44Again quoting from Deuteronomy. Finally the devil took the
- 2:47Savior to a mountain, showed him all the riches and kingdoms of
- 2:51the world. He said, all these will I give
- 2:53you if you will fall down and worship me.
- 2:55The Savior said away with you Satan, for it is written,
- 2:58worship the Lord your God and serve only him.
- 3:02So if Deuteronomy was strong enough to sustain the Savior, it
- 3:06can certainly help us. We could spend months in the
- 3:10book of Deuteronomy, but today we'll focus on three areas.
- 3:13First, we'll look at the 10 commandments, which are again
- 3:16given in Deuteronomy. We'll talk about remembering and
- 3:19forgetting and a wide open hand. Now, in a previous class, we
- 3:24talked about the 10 commandments.
- 3:25We learned some hand signals for them.
- 3:27So let's just do a quick review. We have one God.
- 3:31No graven images. Don't take the name of God in
- 3:35vain. Take two and two.
- 3:37Make a little steeple. Honor the Sabbath day, 2
- 3:40parents, 3 kids. Honor your father and mother.
- 3:44Thou shalt not kill. Thou shalt not commit adultery,
- 3:47splitting a part of marriage. Watch like a magic trick.
- 3:50Thou shalt not steal this commandment #8 #9 Thou shalt not
- 3:55bear false witness #10 thou shalt not covet.
- 3:59Gimme, Gimme, Gimme. Now you've probably remember the
- 4:0110 commandments and it's good to know what they are, But that's
- 4:05not enough. I remember Abenadi was talking
- 4:08to the priest of King Noah. They said, oh, we teach the 10
- 4:10commandments, but Abenadi said, I perceive that they are not
- 4:14written in your hearts. Back in Exodus, we talked about
- 4:17some of the commandments. Today I want to focus on three
- 4:20of the 10 commandments that we haven't talked a lot about yet.
- 4:23Let's begin by looking at the 1st 2 commandments we read.
- 4:27You shall have no other gods besides me.
- 4:30You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of
- 4:34anything that is in the heaven above or that is on the earth
- 4:37beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
- 4:41You shall not bow down to them or serve them.
- 4:45President Spencer W Kimball taught.
- 4:47As I study ancient scripture, I am more and more convinced that
- 4:51there is significance in the fact that the commandment Thou
- 4:54Shalt Have No Other Gods before me is the first of the 10
- 5:00commandments. Whatever thing a man sets his
- 5:03heart and his trust in most is his God.
- 5:08And if his God doesn't also happen to be the true and living
- 5:12God, that man is laboring in idolatry.
- 5:16So anything we set our hearts on besides God becomes an idol.
- 5:20President Kimball is asking what do we love the most?
- 5:23Is it money, success, relationships, or something
- 5:26else? Timothy Keller's book
- 5:27Counterfeit Gods is one of the most powerful resources I know
- 5:31of to help us understand modern idolatry.
- 5:34In it, he writes, A counterfeit God is anything so central and
- 5:39essential to your life that should you lose it, your life
- 5:42would hardly feel worth living. It can be family and children,
- 5:46or career and making money or achievement.
- 5:48It can be a romantic relationship, peer approval,
- 5:51competence and skill, or secure and comfortable circumstances.
- 5:55An idol is whatever you look at and say in your heart of hearts.
- 6:00If I have that, then I'll feel my life has meaning.
- 6:04Then I'll know I have value. Then I'll feel significant and
- 6:09secure. He goes on to write the gospel,
- 6:12asks what is operating in the place of Jesus Christ as your
- 6:17functional salvation and Savior? What are you looking to in order
- 6:21to justify yourself? Whatever it is, is a counterfeit
- 6:26God, and to make a change in your life, you must identify it
- 6:31and reject it as such. I remember recently talking with
- 6:35a woman who was in tears. She said that for her, her idol
- 6:38was her children and her children staying on the covenant
- 6:41path, and she was crying because some of her children had left
- 6:45the covenant path. Now, of course it's good to pray
- 6:48for your children and to hope that they make good decisions.
- 6:51Every parent should do that. But remember, when anything,
- 6:55even a really good thing, becomes the central way you get
- 6:59meaning in your life, that's an idol.
- 7:03Our true hope is in Jesus Christ alone.
- 7:06And at the end of our conversation, the woman said
- 7:09with more of a smile in her eyes.
- 7:12I'm realizing that if I can truly center my focus on Christ,
- 7:17then I'll have peace regardless of the choices my children make.
- 7:22Similarly, I was really touched when one young adult shared a
- 7:26story that she had experienced with idolatry, and with her
- 7:29permission, I share it with you. She said it started out exciting
- 7:33and innocent, and I loved what this relationship meant for me.
- 7:36He was handsome, approved by my parents, and I thought if this
- 7:39leads to marriage, I'll be set. But soon I became anxious.
- 7:42I obsessed over what he thought of me.
- 7:44I stopped speaking. My mind replaced scripture and
- 7:48temple time with Him and thought anything goes as long as He
- 7:51approves. When it ended, I crashed.
- 7:55I had made this man my foundation.
- 7:58Logically, I knew Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ were
- 8:01there, but I had not made them a priority.
- 8:05A week later the topic in Relief Society was anchoring ourselves
- 8:09in Jesus Christ and it hit me. This was my greatest storm and I
- 8:13had no foundation. Months later in a moment of deep
- 8:17prayer, I said Lord, forgive me for my idolatry await released.
- 8:23I realized idol worship is a jail cell.
- 8:26I vowed to never make immortal my God again.
- 8:30False saviors will never deliver like Jesus Christ does.
- 8:34Remember, when anything, even a really good thing, becomes the
- 8:39central way you get meaning in your life, That's an idol.
- 8:43It could be popularity, or beauty or financial security or
- 8:46physical strength. All of these things are good
- 8:48things, but if they become the ultimate thing, will eventually
- 8:52be disappointed. And that's why God warns us not
- 8:55to worship idols. It's not because He needs all
- 8:57the attention because He gets jealous if we worship something
- 9:00else. He knows that whatever else we
- 9:02worship will not give us the joy that only He can.
- 9:07Think about the needs that we have that drive our idol worship
- 9:11and how Christ is the true answer to those needs.
- 9:14For example, we might have an idol of power, approval,
- 9:17comfort, or control. Let's suppose my idol is power.
- 9:21That means I fear humiliation and disrespect.
- 9:25I desire recognition and influence.
- 9:28But Christ is truly the answer because He is the source of true
- 9:33power. Or imagine that your idol is
- 9:36approval. You fear rejection and
- 9:39criticism. You desire to be accepted or
- 9:42wanted. Christ is the answer though,
- 9:44because we find our deepest approval in Him.
- 9:48We could do this with the idols of comfort or control.
- 9:52Ultimately, though, all of our desires are only filled in Jesus
- 9:56Christ. Idols will never give us the
- 9:59hope, the comfort that we want. So consider for a moment, how
- 10:03might idolatry be a danger in your life today?
- 10:07I'm not accusing anyone in this room of being an idol
- 10:10worshipper, but it's almost certain that for all of us, at
- 10:13some level, idolatry has crept into our hearts.
- 10:18We might not be worshipping a golden calf, but there could be
- 10:21other things that we worship. So consider these two questions.
- 10:25What is there in your life that if you lost, it, would feel like
- 10:29life was no longer worth living? What is something that you want
- 10:32so badly that you think, if only I had that, then I could be
- 10:38content? Could those be idols in your
- 10:41life? So let's suppose as we think, we
- 10:43reflect on, I think, you know what?
- 10:45I am seeing some idols in my life and I know that's not good,
- 10:48so I'm just going to get rid of those idols.
- 10:50That's a great idea, but our hearts don't really work that
- 10:53way. It's not just about getting rid
- 10:55of the idol. We have to replace it with
- 10:57something else, or rather with someone else.
- 11:02The only way to replace our idols is to deeply fill our
- 11:06hearts with Jesus Christ, Timothy Keller writes.
- 11:09Idolatry is a setting of the whole heart on something besides
- 11:13God. This cannot be remedied only by
- 11:16repenting that you have an idol or using willpower to try to
- 11:20live differently. Turning from idols is not less
- 11:23than those two things, but it is also far more.
- 11:26You must set your mind and heart on things above where your life
- 11:30is hidden with Christ and God. This means appreciating,
- 11:34rejoicing, and resting in what Jesus has done for you.
- 11:38It entails joyful worship, a sense of God's reality, and
- 11:42prayer. Jesus must become more beautiful
- 11:44to your imagination, more attractive to your heart than
- 11:48your idol. That is what will replace your
- 11:50counterfeit gods. So there are two questions I
- 11:54want each of us to seriously consider.
- 11:56First, what are possible idols in your life?
- 12:00And 2nd, how can Jesus Christ become so important to you that
- 12:05these idols lose their power? The first stop that came to my
- 12:09mind was the 12 step program. So I've witnessed a few people
- 12:14really close to me who were in the throes of a addiction.
- 12:18So maybe their idol was just trying to prove themselves.
- 12:23So the addiction is usually like a symptom of something else and
- 12:27rather than just avoiding it and white knuckling it, they have
- 12:30replaced it completely with Jesus Christ and it's been the
- 12:35most powerful thing to witness. That's.
- 12:37Beautiful. Thank you.
- 12:39Consumerism's always been something that's really hard for
- 12:42me and something that has been a possible idol for me.
- 12:47And I was thinking about something that I could give to
- 12:52Christ and something that I could give up.
- 12:54And, you know, I was thinking, oh, maybe next month I'll do a
- 12:59fast where I give up all online shopping and I give up anything
- 13:03that's unnecessary to purchase. I was praying one day and I was
- 13:07like, OK, Heavenly Father, I think next month I'm going to
- 13:09start this fast. And he said, why don't you start
- 13:12today instead? And I was like, Oh, that's a
- 13:18little harder, you know, and, and I think that I pushed off
- 13:21and I pushed off and I, and I push off this, this fasting from
- 13:25something that keeps me further away from the savior.
- 13:29And so he when he just gave me that little nudge, I was like,
- 13:32OK. And it's really wild to watch
- 13:35this addiction play out in my life because you don't realize
- 13:38these small little things that keep you further away from the
- 13:43savior. And when you take them out, you
- 13:46can replace them with something better.
- 13:49Thank you. Well, let's turn for a moment
- 13:51from the first two commandments to the 4th commandment to honor
- 13:55the Sabbath day. Now, it's interesting.
- 13:56Most of the commandments are written pretty much identically
- 13:59in Exodus and Deuteronomy, but there's some significant
- 14:03differences in the 4th commandment and how Exodus and
- 14:07Deuteronomy talk about it. In Exodus, for example, it says
- 14:10remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
- 14:13In Deuteronomy it says observe the Sabbath day and keep it
- 14:18holy. So which is it?
- 14:19Should we remember the Sabbath day or observe it?
- 14:22Obviously it's both, but you can see there's a small difference
- 14:25there. Remember, it's more cognitive.
- 14:27Don't forget about it. Observe is make sure you really
- 14:30live this. Then in the final part of this
- 14:33commandment, in both Exodus and Deuteronomy, there's a different
- 14:36rationale that's given for the commandment.
- 14:39In Exodus it says, for in six days the Lord made heaven and
- 14:43earth and sea and all that is in them, but rested the 7th day.
- 14:48Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and consecrated it.
- 14:51So in Exodus it's kind of like you should honor the Sabbath day
- 14:53because God rested on the 7th day of creation, and you should
- 14:57rest as well. Deuteronomy is a little
- 14:59different. It says, remember you were a
- 15:02slave in the land of Egypt and the Lord your God brought you
- 15:05out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm.
- 15:10Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the
- 15:14Sabbath day. So one thing that stands out to
- 15:16me is this command. It's not an option, it's not a
- 15:19good idea. God commanded you because when
- 15:21you were slave, you were working 24/7.
- 15:23There was no rest, but God delivered you, so now you can
- 15:28rest. We might see that the Sabbath
- 15:30grounds us in creation, reminding us that just like God,
- 15:33we can rest even when our plates are overflowing.
- 15:37The Sabbath also points us to redemption, reminding us that
- 15:41Christ has really set us free. Now for me, something that's
- 15:45really helped me in my life, to ground me in the Sabbath day in
- 15:48recent years has been to go to the Western Wall in Jerusalem.
- 15:52You probably know that Jews observed the Sabbath beginning
- 15:56at sundown on Friday night. And so if you ever go to the
- 15:59Western Wall as the sun is setting on a Friday night, it's
- 16:02a huge celebration. Jewish youth groups will come to
- 16:05celebrate. People are there worshipping,
- 16:07they're singing, sing and dancing as people are welcoming
- 16:10in the Sabbath. Is this how it is in your home?
- 16:12Do people sing and dance because they're so excited on Sunday
- 16:15morning for the Sabbath? I know that it was definitely
- 16:18not like that for me as a kid, right?
- 16:20I'm like, oh, man, there's no cartoons.
- 16:23It's interesting, though. On a recent trip to Jerusalem, I
- 16:25was at the Western Wall talking with a Jewish young adult man
- 16:28about what his experiences were growing up.
- 16:31Like many Orthodox Jews, the Sabbath rules in his house were
- 16:35very strict, like, absolutely no watching TV, no being on your
- 16:38phone. And I asked him, So when you
- 16:41were, like, 16 or 17, did you ever, like, try to sneak
- 16:43downstairs and, you know, watch the Super Bowl or, you know, get
- 16:46on your phone or something? And he looked at me as though I
- 16:48were crazy. He was like, what the Sabbath is
- 16:52a day to connect with God and to be with my family.
- 16:56Why would I want to violate the Sabbath?
- 16:59And I was like, oh, yeah, that's that's kind of what I thought
- 17:00when I was a kid, too. It was so interesting to see his
- 17:05complete dedication to honoring the Sabbath day.
- 17:09I love what President Russell M Nelson taught.
- 17:11He quotes Isaiah who said turn away from doing thy pleasure on
- 17:17my holy day and call the Sabbath a delight.
- 17:21President Nelson continues saying not pursuing your own
- 17:24pleasure on the Sabbath requires self-discipline.
- 17:28You may have to deny yourself of something you might like.
- 17:31If you choose to delight yourself in the Lord, you will
- 17:34not permit yourself to treat it as any other day.
- 17:38Routine and recreational activities can be done some
- 17:41other time. In addition to your going to
- 17:43church, partaking of the sacrament, and being diligent in
- 17:46your specific call to serve, what other activities would help
- 17:51to make the Sabbath a delight for you?
- 17:54What sign will you give to the Lord to show your love for Him?
- 17:59If we think about the doctrine, principles, application,
- 18:03framework that we've used in this class, President Nelson is
- 18:06giving us a clear principle. Because the Sabbath is holy, I
- 18:10should turn away from doing my own pleasure on the Sabbath and
- 18:15instead delight in the Lord. There's lots of different
- 18:18applications we could draw from this principle, and I just want
- 18:22to share 2 applications that I've heard from church leaders
- 18:25that have deeply influenced the way that I think about the
- 18:27Sabbath day. First is a story shared by
- 18:29President Monson. He said a man related that years
- 18:33earlier he had a special school date on a Saturday night.
- 18:36He borrowed the family car as he obtained the car keys and was
- 18:40heading for the door. His father said the car will
- 18:42need more gasoline before tomorrow.
- 18:44Be sure sure to fill the tank before coming home.
- 18:47Well, as you can probably guess, the boy had a great time but
- 18:49forgot to fill up the car with gas, President Watson continues.
- 18:53Sunday morning dawned. The father discovered the gas
- 18:56gauge showed empty. The son saw his father walk back
- 18:59into the house and put the car keys on the table in their home.
- 19:03The Sabbath day was a day for worship and Thanksgiving, not
- 19:07for purchases, the man declared. I saw my father put on his coat,
- 19:13bid us goodbye, and then walk the long distance to the Chapel
- 19:17that he might attend. In early meeting.
- 19:20President Monson's comment on this experience, which was about
- 19:24a man named H Berlin Anderson, was duty called.
- 19:28Truth was not held slave to expedience.
- 19:32Consider a second application, this one from President Oakes,
- 19:36he said. When I was in high school, I had
- 19:38a job in a radio station that went on through college.
- 19:41I often worked on Sunday. When I left home to go to
- 19:44Graduate School. My widowed mother said something
- 19:47to me that has profoundly blessed my life.
- 19:50She said. Dallin, you have been working on
- 19:52Sunday and you have been studying on Sunday to keep up
- 19:54with your schoolwork. When your father was in medical
- 19:57school, he never studied on Sunday and he was very blessed
- 20:01because of that. I think you ought to consider
- 20:03that as you go to Graduate School.
- 20:07President Oakes reflected that council, which I determined to
- 20:10follow has changed my life. I never studied on Sunday in
- 20:14Graduate School, although there was considerable pressure to do
- 20:17so when an exam was on a Monday. But I found that I could do more
- 20:23in six days with the blessings of the Lord than I could in
- 20:26seven days, trying to balance studying and work.
- 20:30That established a pattern for my life.
- 20:33I'm glad I followed the counsel of my widowed mother.
- 20:36I'd suggest that you'll get farther in your life if you'll
- 20:40do things in the Lord's way. President Oakes concluded and
- 20:44said The owner's manual written by the one who created our
- 20:47bodies and souls, says 6 days shalt thou labor and do all they
- 20:52work, but the 7th day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God.
- 20:57Let's go back to the doctrine, principles, and application
- 21:00framework. As you think about your own
- 21:02life, what have you been doing to apply this principle of
- 21:05honoring God on the Sabbath day that you're happy about?
- 21:08Is there anything that you feel like you need to tweak a little
- 21:11bit in your life so that you canmore fully turn away from
- 21:14doing your own pleasure on the Sabbath and instead delight in
- 21:18the Lord? Now, all of our plans to stop
- 21:21worshipping idols and to focus more on the Sabbath day are
- 21:25completely in vain if we forget about our goals.
- 21:28If I've set a goal to not shop online for a certain period of
- 21:32time, but I forget about it, it obviously will be in vain.
- 21:36So I want to turn now to our second principle of remembering
- 21:40and forgetting. It's so important to remember.
- 21:43Recently there was a young father who was so excited to
- 21:47bless his newborn child. He was nervous.
- 21:49He never blessed a baby before. As he got up to the circle and
- 21:53someone held a microphone to him, his grandfather whispered
- 21:56to him, Hey, where's the baby? He was so he was so nervous he'd
- 22:01forgotten his baby. Hopefully he's laughing about
- 22:05that story now. But it points to a constant
- 22:07challenge we have with forgetting things.
- 22:10We forget our passwords. We might even forget a birthday.
- 22:12We're forgetful creatures. And if we're not careful, we can
- 22:16forget God. That's a key theme in the Book
- 22:20of Deuteronomy. Here Moses is gathering together
- 22:23the younger generation, and he says to them, take care and
- 22:27watch yourselves closely so as neither to forget the things
- 22:31that your eyes have seen nor to let them slip from your mind all
- 22:36the days of your life. Make them known to your children
- 22:40and your children's children. Many of us have had powerful
- 22:43spiritual experiences throughout our lives, but they're not just
- 22:46for us. Are we telling them to our
- 22:48children, to our grandchildren? How do you fight forgetfulness?
- 22:52It's with reminders, Moses told the people.
- 22:55Keep these words that I'm commanding you today in your
- 22:58heart. Recite them to your children and
- 23:01talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when
- 23:03you lie down and when you rise. Bind them as a sign on your
- 23:07hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on
- 23:12the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
- 23:16So notice that here God is giving three specific ways that
- 23:19the Israelites are to keep God's word at the forefront of their
- 23:23minds. First, Moses says talk about God
- 23:26whenever you're home and whenever you're away.
- 23:28Now, when are you ever not a home or away?
- 23:31In other words, always talk about God first thing in the
- 23:33morning, last thing at night. We don't take a vacation from
- 23:37talking about God. A family prays together each
- 23:39morning before everyone goes their separate ways at the
- 23:42dinner table that night, conversations include questions
- 23:45like, How did you see God's hand in your life today?
- 23:47Sometime during the busy day, there's a moment for scripture
- 23:51study. And as a parent tucks a child in
- 23:53at night, the parent will share a testimony of Jesus Christ.
- 23:57Now we might think to ourselves, isn't this too much?
- 23:59Like was every morning, every night, all the time?
- 24:02But when a child get overwhelmed with all of this gospel
- 24:04teaching, President Irene doesn't think so.
- 24:07He said we should seize every opportunity to share the
- 24:10teachings of Jesus Christ with children.
- 24:12These teaching moments are precious and far fewer compared
- 24:16to the relentless efforts of opposing forces.
- 24:19For every hour spent instilling doctrine into a child's life,
- 24:23there are countless hours of opposition filled with messages
- 24:27and images that challenge or ignore those saving truths.
- 24:32Some of you may wonder whether it might be better to draw your
- 24:34children closer to you through having fun.
- 24:37Or you may ask whether the child may start to feel overwhelmed by
- 24:40your teachings. Instead, we should consider,
- 24:42with so little time and so few opportunities, what words of
- 24:47doctrine can I share that will strengthen them against the
- 24:50inevitable challenges to their faith?
- 24:53The words you share today could be the ones they carry with
- 24:57them. And today will soon pass.
- 25:01So all the time, whether you're home or away in the morning, at
- 25:04night, we talk to our children about God.
- 25:07We remind them of His power, His wonders, commandments.
- 25:10Now, the second way that Moses told us to remember God's
- 25:13commandments was to bind them as a sign on your hand.
- 25:17Fix them as an emblem on your forehead.
- 25:20And I've been humbled on many trips to Israel to see how some
- 25:23modern Jews literally observe this commandment.
- 25:27During some prayers, some Orthodox Jews will strap small
- 25:30leather boxes to their arms and foreheads.
- 25:32Inside are tiny scrolls with passages from the Torah.
- 25:36It's a powerful image, God's word guiding what you do with
- 25:40your hands and what you think about with your mind.
- 25:43Many modern Jews also literally obey the command to write the
- 25:47commandments on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
- 25:51This is done through a mezuzah, which is a small decorative case
- 25:55that's attached to the right hand doorpost in many Jewish
- 25:58homes by the cases, a rolled up parchment that contains some of
- 26:01the commandments. So anytime you enter or leave,
- 26:04you can touch it as a reminder. God's word, his commandments,
- 26:08they are in this home and they go with me wherever I go.
- 26:12These types of visual reminders were really important to the
- 26:16Jews and they are important to us today.
- 26:18Just as another example, consider in the book of Joshua,
- 26:21after Israel miraculously crossed the Jordan River, Joshua
- 26:25said stack 12 Stones so that this may be a sign among you
- 26:30when your children ask in time to come, what do these stones
- 26:34mean to you? Then you shall tell them Israel
- 26:37crossed over the Jordan here on dry ground.
- 26:40What are the 12 Stones that we have in our homes?
- 26:43What are the visual reminders that we can show to our children
- 26:48to help us tell stories that keep God's deliverance in front
- 26:51of our families? Now some of us might be
- 26:53thinking, is remembering really that important?
- 26:56Moses definitely thought so. Especially when things are going
- 27:00well in your life, he said. When you eat your fill, take
- 27:04care that you do not forget the Lord your God.
- 27:08When things are going well, it's easy for us to say, yeah, I'm
- 27:10awesome, I got myself here. But President Irene reminds us
- 27:15the challenge to remember has always been the hardest.
- 27:18For those who are blessed abundantly, it is easy to begin
- 27:21to feel the blessings we're granted, not by a loving God on
- 27:24whom we depend, but by our own powers.
- 27:28Now, most of us probably aren't going to adopt the specific
- 27:31practices that are outlined in the book of Deuteronomy,
- 27:34although maybe writing the commandments on your Airpod case
- 27:37might not be a bad idea. But take a moment and reflect on
- 27:41this question. What does God's command to have
- 27:44visual reminders of his commandments look like for you?
- 27:49I'm not. A decorator.
- 27:51I don't have those kinds of talents and abilities, but I can
- 27:54reflect in the things that are in my home, the things that are
- 27:58in my heart and my testimony of my heavenly Father, my Savior
- 28:02Jesus Christ. And when you walk into my home,
- 28:05you see the Savior, you see the temple, you see my family.
- 28:09And those are the things that are most important to me.
- 28:13And those are visual reminders to me and to anyone who comes
- 28:17into my home will know what I believe.
- 28:20Yeah, I was talking to a. Student at BYU who is studying
- 28:23interior design and she said that her professor would really
- 28:27emphasize how are you going to make Christ the central design
- 28:30figure of your home? And I've never really thought of
- 28:34that. Thank you.
- 28:35I'm pretty sure if the Israelites had had smartphones,
- 28:38Moses might have mentioned lock screens and wallpaper as another
- 28:42way to remember and not forget God.
- 28:45Let's turn to one more theme in the book of Deuteronomy and that
- 28:47has to do with a wide open hand. First, try clenching your fist
- 28:52for 15 seconds. Probably many of you have
- 28:56stronger risks than I have, so you're able to just keep going.
- 28:59But for me, my hands actually get tired out after a little
- 29:01while. I think it's hard to have a
- 29:04clenched fist. Deuteronomy teaches us a
- 29:06different way about having a hand that's wide open.
- 29:10We read, If there be among you a poor man within any of thy gates
- 29:13in thy land, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut
- 29:18thine hand from thy poor brother, but thou shalt open thy
- 29:21hand wide unto him. Again we read, The poor shall
- 29:26never cease out of the land. Therefore I command thee, thou
- 29:29shalt open thy hand wide unto thy brother, to the poor and to
- 29:34the needy. That phrase open your hands wide
- 29:37really stands out to me as I read in Deuteronomy.
- 29:40We've got to serve those who are financially poor.
- 29:43Deuteronomy also calls us to open our eyes.
- 29:47If you see your neighbor's ox or sheep straying, you shall bring
- 29:50it back to your neighbor. You shall not see your
- 29:52neighbor's donkey or ox falling down by the road and ignore it.
- 29:55You must help to raise it up. Now, probably you haven't seen a
- 29:59lot of missing donkeys recently, but you might find a missing
- 30:03wallet, or you might see someone whose car isn't working very
- 30:06well. Deuteronomy is inviting us to
- 30:08see and then to open our hands wide to serve.
- 30:12Deuteronomy also speaks about the importance of open
- 30:15resources, opening our resources to help others.
- 30:19When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in
- 30:22the field, you shall not go back to get it.
- 30:24It shall be left for the alien, the orphan, the widow.
- 30:28You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt.
- 30:31Therefore, I command you to do this.
- 30:35So we open our eyes, we open our hands, and we extend our
- 30:39resources to those who are in need.
- 30:41Now, this specific practice about leaving some of the grain
- 30:45behind, We'll see that when we get to the Book of Ruth.
- 30:48For many of us, we're not practicing in agriculture right
- 30:51now, so we have to think hard about what does this mean for me
- 30:54in my life? How do I apply these same
- 30:57principles? I wonder if sometimes a message
- 30:59like this can almost feel like a guilt trip because we're not
- 31:02doing more. And I don't know, maybe for some
- 31:04of us, maybe for me, it's supposed to feel like a guilt
- 31:06trip. But I don't think God is telling
- 31:08us to open our hands wide because he wants us to feel
- 31:10guilty. He wants us to be like him, and
- 31:14God opens his hands wide. We read God executes justice for
- 31:20the orphan and the widow and loves the stranger, providing
- 31:23them food and clothing. You shall also love the
- 31:26stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
- 31:30When we serve the poor, we're doing what God himself does.
- 31:34We want to open our hands wide because He opens his.
- 31:38I admit it can be a challenge to know how exactly should we serve
- 31:42the financially poor among us. Some of us might feel like we
- 31:46are the financially poor. I love what President Jeffrey R
- 31:49Holland said. I don't know exactly how each of
- 31:52you should fulfil your obligation to help those who do
- 31:55not or cannot always help themselves.
- 31:57But I know that God knows and He will help you and guide you in
- 32:02compassionate acts of discipleship if you are
- 32:05conscientiously wanting and praying and looking for ways to
- 32:09keep a commandment He has given us again and again.
- 32:14If we were to look at the doctrines, principles,
- 32:16application format, we might see something like this.
- 32:18A doctrine could be every person on earth is a child of loving
- 32:22heavenly parents. A principle growing out of that
- 32:25doctrine is I should care for the temporal needs of my
- 32:28spiritual siblings. There are so many ways that we
- 32:31could apply this principle. I'd love to hear some of your
- 32:35experiences. I have a friend who is a.
- 32:37Spiritual giant in my opinion, and he taught me a great lesson.
- 32:42He's been successful as the world would view success and has
- 32:48the means to accomplish much. Only he drives us an average car
- 32:52and I asked him one day why don't you get a such and such
- 32:55car which is fancy or powerful or impressive?
- 32:58He said no, I buy a regular car and I use the difference to help
- 33:02other people. Boy, that hit my heart.
- 33:06Great lesson for life. It's something that I think we
- 33:08can all do. As we use our resources and
- 33:11assets, we can decide how we're using them.
- 33:14I've used that in my life and I think it's very powerful.
- 33:17Thank you, I did receive. Of this doctrine and principle.
- 33:21We were in quarantine for almost 8 weeks.
- 33:25We'd run out of food we did have, but we were so sick that
- 33:29we couldn't cook. And every day we receive food in
- 33:33our doorstep. Every day later we find out that
- 33:38people that we didn't even know, they just send it like a
- 33:41DoorDash. They just came and drop us food.
- 33:45And I think that is a great example of little things that we
- 33:49can do to make them feel love and to be grateful forever.
- 33:54Thank you. I think about one of my
- 33:56neighbors. She doesn't have a huge house or
- 33:58endless resources, but when there was a refugee crisis, she
- 34:02invited a young refugee to come live in her home.
- 34:05It was a huge sacrifice for her family, but it made an
- 34:08incredible difference in this young woman's life, who's now
- 34:11gone on to be married. She has four children.
- 34:13That's part of what it means to have your hands wide open to
- 34:16open up your hands, your heart, your resources, even when you
- 34:20don't have a lot yourself. I think about one of my
- 34:23childhood friends who win. The humanitarian crisis in
- 34:26Ukraine began. She felt like she needed to act.
- 34:28She didn't have any special connections or influence, but
- 34:32she just started with what she could.
- 34:34She was able to gather donations, start organizing
- 34:36help. And because she opened her hands
- 34:39wide, many people in Ukraine received the resources and
- 34:42support that they desperately needed.
- 34:45Now, probably some of you are thinking to yourself, brother
- 34:46Hilton, I'm all in. My hands are wide open.
- 34:49My challenge is how do I help my children want to serve others
- 34:53more deeply? I wish there was some kind of
- 34:55game or activity that I could share with them.
- 34:58Wish granted. So this is a really fun game.
- 35:01It's the Seagulls game. We don't have time to play it
- 35:03together today, but I've linked to it on the course website, so
- 35:06if you want to go check it out. It's a great activity to play
- 35:09with teenagers or children to help them feel in their hearts
- 35:12the importance of opening our hands wide.
- 35:15Now, as we come to the end of the book of Deuteronomy, it's
- 35:18Moses's farewell, but it can be our fresh start.
- 35:22At the end of Deuteronomy, Moses explains that he's laying out a
- 35:26choice for the people. He tells them that when they
- 35:29enter into the Promised Land, they're going to walk through a
- 35:31valley and on one of the hills on one side at Mount Gerizim,
- 35:35the priest will shout out all of the blessings if the people keep
- 35:39the commandments. On the other side, priests will
- 35:42be shouting out all the curses. What will happen if the people
- 35:45don't keep the commandments? And this actually happens in
- 35:49Joshua chapter 8. It's a giant object lesson that
- 35:52reminds us that you have a choice.
- 35:54You can choose to be blessed or you can choose to be cursed.
- 35:58And Moses summarizes this with one final invitation.
- 36:02He says, I have set before you life and death, blessing and
- 36:07curse. Therefore, choose life, for the
- 36:12Lord is your life. It sounds simple.
- 36:14Who wants to choose death instead of life?
- 36:17But Moses knows that it's harder than it looks.
- 36:20When we choose idols or prioritize work on the Sabbath,
- 36:23when we forget God, when we close our hands to the poor,
- 36:27we're not just making less effective decisions.
- 36:30In a sense, we are choosing death.
- 36:33So how do we choose life? It's actually not that
- 36:36complicated. We choose Jesus, he said.
- 36:40I am the way, the truth, and the life.
- 36:43He said. I am the resurrection and the
- 36:45life. In other words, Moses's
- 36:48invitation to choose life isn't just about making good
- 36:51decisions, It's about choosing a person.
- 36:55Jesus resisted temptation to strengthen us when we face
- 36:59temptation. And ironically, Jesus chose
- 37:02death so that we could choose life.
- 37:06And because Christ died for us, we are now free to choose life
- 37:11in Him.
