- 0:00And I hope I'm not oversharing here, but I walked into Dan's
- 0:02place in Seattle and I see this pistol on the ground.
- 0:06Welcome to this week's That Car Show.
- 0:08We talk about driving a box truck from Seattle to LA without
- 0:13killing Ryan or myself. We share the secrets on how you
- 0:19bribe Brian into driving an Audi for over 1200 miles.
- 0:23You're not supposed to laugh at this ship.
- 0:25This is the one we're going to use this one, sorry.
- 0:28And then finally we talk about Lindsay and her new best friend
- 0:33Sterling and how he guided her through Faithfuls in the form of
- 0:38a Land Rover. Should I re redo that again?
- 0:42But we no, I think that's perfect.
- 0:43That's great. I love it.
- 0:45Yeah, I can't. Wait to work.
- 0:47Hey, it's that car show. We are back.
- 0:50Dan is back. Good to see you, Sir.
- 0:53I do. I saw a lot of you over the
- 0:55last. Week, right?
- 0:56Well, Congrats on last week. I thought it was a really fun
- 0:58episode. And oh, thanks, great to.
- 1:00Have Derek on the call as well, so yeah.
- 1:02Kids a star I like him I. Had a couple of questions around
- 1:05it. Yeah, Derek seemed to refer to
- 1:07this rhyme Barky dictionary. So is this something that's
- 1:10going to be available for the holidays?
- 1:14Yeah, it's in the children's section.
- 1:16Yeah, I've, I'll put my purchase in because I want you to sign it
- 1:20for me, OK? Yeah.
- 1:21I mean, obviously there's going to be a pre-order and like
- 1:24friends and family. So, Ryan, just keep us updated.
- 1:26Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:28This is self published just so you know.
- 1:30Well, I really like that. Like as Derek described, like
- 1:33it's a picture book. So you're right, actually, it
- 1:35appeals to all the ages. That's that's what's not to
- 1:38love. Yeah, that's that's yeah, he he
- 1:42was awesome. That was that was really a lot
- 1:43of fun and we've gotten a lot of great feedback on that episode.
- 1:47So we appreciate all of it. I think it was our best episode
- 1:50to date numbers wise. So let's let's keep it, keep it
- 1:54going and can't wait to have him back on.
- 1:55I really just like the way that he I like his take on the car
- 1:58world, right? And he's just a hell of a nice
- 2:00guy too. So.
- 2:02Yeah, and you're right. Like thank you so much for to
- 2:04everybody that has listened and shared their thoughts and it's
- 2:08always fun to hear from people, especially when it's positive.
- 2:11Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
- 2:13But we welcome all feedback, of course.
- 2:15Exactly. So Dan's back.
- 2:17Dan and I are back from our U-Haul ex Audi collaboration
- 2:23convoy from Seattle to LA. What a trip.
- 2:27We we drove, we ate, we slumbered.
- 2:30Yeah, motels, hotels of all types, Inns, motor lodges.
- 2:36Do tell. You were mistaken for famous
- 2:38comedians. That's.
- 2:40Right. Yeah, well, infamous comedians,
- 2:43maybe. Infamous comedians, Do you want
- 2:46to know the story? Do you want to hear the story?
- 2:48I mean, I want to hear all the stories, so let's just dive
- 2:50right in, OK, So because you guys just did Seattle to LA, so
- 2:55the bulk. Of the park for sitting.
- 2:56In US and go. Yeah, Dan has a new job in LA
- 3:02and I followed Dan and his U-Haul and yeah, Congrats, we'll
- 3:07get to that eventually. But, and I followed him in his
- 3:11Audi SQ5. So I definitely had the, the,
- 3:14the nice, the nice seat, I guess.
- 3:17And we did it over what four days.
- 3:19So we took our time and we we took sort of the interior
- 3:24highways, Interstate. So it's beautiful, but you know,
- 3:27it wasn't quite like the coast, but you know, time was of the
- 3:30essence and it was a long enough drive as, as it was, I think it
- 3:32was like 20 hours or something, right?
- 3:33So, but Dan and I both share a love of, of the movie Stand by
- 3:38Me. And so Stand by Me was filmed in
- 3:41Brownsville, OR and Dan had been there before.
- 3:44I had not. So we we stopped in Brownsville,
- 3:48OR and I think that movie was released on Yeah, that was the
- 3:55first step, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 3:57So. Well, we kicked things off just
- 3:59to roll back from one second. Yeah, right.
- 4:00We kicked things off by attending the singer Castle.
- 4:05Oh, right. How can we forget that for?
- 4:08You minor. Minor, right?
- 4:10So epic. Yeah.
- 4:12So. Yeah.
- 4:12So. But I think Lindsay, you had
- 4:14been there the night before. I was there, right?
- 4:16Yeah. Midday Friday, you know,
- 4:18checking it for you guys, making sure it was OK, and then you
- 4:21guys got to go on Saturday. I mean, I'm nothing.
- 4:24It's not. I'm a giver and I want quality
- 4:26control for you guys. So yeah.
- 4:29That's that's right. Seems to happen a lot, but yeah,
- 4:33right. And that was a great event.
- 4:34It was good to see our singer friends again, saw Sheamus, ran
- 4:39into some other friends from here there and, you know,
- 4:42everywhere Eric and Amity and Jeff Jones made some new
- 4:49friends. It was great.
- 4:50It was awesome. It was.
- 4:52Well, you got to meet Will and Jake that run the One Drivers
- 4:55Club in Redmond, right? I think I did.
- 4:59Is that right, Dan? Yeah, so Will was the gentleman
- 5:02with the bears. Right, can't forget it I.
- 5:05Mean they were both working. Super well, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 5:07yeah, yeah. Yeah, I would imagine not long
- 5:10conversations, but enough, enough to say hi, yeah.
- 5:12No Hell of a place I think. They were getting support from
- 5:18someone and that someone didn't really know what they were
- 5:20doing. So there was a couple of
- 5:21situations where these really nice cars parked up and it's
- 5:24like we're really sorry you need to move those to the other car
- 5:26park because this is reserved for A964 or a GT3.
- 5:31So some cars got moved, but it was Will and Jake did a
- 5:35fantastic job and that's great. Everyone had a smile on their
- 5:38face. That was the starting point for
- 5:41the road trip. Yeah, it was like a top.
- 5:43Gear event, wasn't it? Yeah, it really was.
- 5:46Dan was kind enough to have proffered hockey.
- 5:49Hockey talkies, walkie talkies for us.
- 5:52So we got to pretend we were big.
- 5:54You know, big rig truckers the whole time.
- 5:56So did you guys come up with like handles?
- 5:58Did you have nicknames where you're like?
- 6:00I did for Ryan. I did for Ryan.
- 6:02Which was can. You see the big dog of the
- 6:05barky? Dog.
- 6:06OK, big dog. Yeah.
- 6:08And I think I should have been like hauling Hank or something
- 6:10like that. I don't know.
- 6:12You got to be careful with those, right?
- 6:15Yeah, but yeah, we, we, we had fun with those.
- 6:21And so yeah, as I, as I was getting to we, we ended up going
- 6:25to Brownsville OR. And.
- 6:26And Brownsville is what a beautiful like just corner of
- 6:28the world just in this movie. Was was was released in 1985 on
- 6:34my birthday in 1985 and it was set in the late 50s and in 2025.
- 6:40It looks exactly the same. So like it is, it is exactly
- 6:44that town with that vibe. It's very small.
- 6:47You can absolutely like things are like, you know, it's not
- 6:51like, you know, 1 scene was here and they turned around and they
- 6:54filmed the other scene 3, you know, 3 miles away, like, Oh
- 6:56yeah, there's the other, you know, the next scene.
- 6:58It's all, it all makes sense, right?
- 6:59It's all. What's the word I'm looking for?
- 7:01It's very. Cohesive.
- 7:02It flows well, Yeah, it's cohesive.
- 7:04It tracks, right? You know, we saw the alley, you
- 7:07know, with the, with the where the gun goes off, you know, do
- 7:10you want to be The Lone Ranger, the Cisco kid?
- 7:12You know, I got my picture back there.
- 7:13We saw the, the, the tree right where the tree house was.
- 7:19In fact, the damn branch where the tree house stood is still
- 7:22there. I mean, it's just like it is on
- 7:24screen. It's amazing.
- 7:24This is like 40 years later. It's literally four years later.
- 7:29And the most amazing thing is there was really nothing in the
- 7:31way of, like, I don't know, plaques or or, you know, tourism
- 7:37literature. Yeah.
- 7:39Yeah, I think total missed opportunity missing.
- 7:42A point. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:43But it was. I'd love to go back someday and
- 7:45spend a little more time, but it was awesome.
- 7:46Thank you, Dan, for indulging me.
- 7:48Much like in the movie, the dining options in Brownsville
- 7:51are sort of slim. So we found a place that I swear
- 7:55I thought was a strip club, but it was a little more of a bike.
- 7:59When the when the front door is a black steel door with no
- 8:02window. No like.
- 8:04That feels. That's generally an indicator of
- 8:07a certain type of establishment, yeah.
- 8:09It is not that. I would know, but.
- 8:11No, and I don't, I wouldn't know either, but it it, it was the
- 8:16highest rated culinary option in town.
- 8:19And so we went in and we, we got kind of the, you know, the, the
- 8:23once over by, you know, the two or three tables of locals that
- 8:26were were there. Interesting.
- 8:28Not from around here. Obviously not from around here,
- 8:31but you know, everyone was so nice and, and we, we got our
- 8:35food, we sat outside. We're the only ones outside.
- 8:40I had to laugh because the outside area had these big tall
- 8:42wooden fences all around like the patio and they cover up one
- 8:46of like the most beautiful vistas I've ever seen in my
- 8:48life. I guess you just get used to
- 8:50these things when you when you live near them.
- 8:52But I had to, I don't want to say I had to laugh because it
- 8:54was obviously very sad, but there was a literally a missing
- 8:57boy poster on the door of the place.
- 9:00So if you know the movie, the whole movie is sort of
- 9:03predicated around this group of kids looking for this, this boy,
- 9:07right, who's gone missing. And his name again was browser.
- 9:13Yeah, Yeah. And this kid had a very the
- 9:15browser kid. This kid had had the same
- 9:17initials. It was very strange, but we ate
- 9:20our meal outside and then we came back in to pay.
- 9:24And in that time, the woman tending bar had changed.
- 9:27And so we're kind of waiting. She's she's like fixing
- 9:30something in the bathroom, the men's bathroom, the toilet had
- 9:33had gone weird or something. So she's trying to find a piece
- 9:36of tape to tape up a sign that says it's not working.
- 9:39And we're kind of joking with her.
- 9:40And then she looks at us and, you know, she hadn't seen us
- 9:43before. And we kind of emerge from that
- 9:44side. She goes, you must be the
- 9:46comedians and and we couldn't really what he turned me trying
- 9:52to be funny, you know, but apparently they were having a
- 9:55comedy show and, you know, in 15 minutes and and the comedians
- 9:58hadn't shown up yet. And I want to look at Dan.
- 10:01I'm like, Dan, this is our big break.
- 10:02Let's just run with right? Like.
- 10:04You're absolutely right. That's exactly why we're here.
- 10:07But Dan was dressed all in black.
- 10:09He had his, like, backpack over his.
- 10:11You know he's British, right? I mean, they sure as hell hadn't
- 10:14seen me before, you know, But we, we, we realized pretty
- 10:18quickly it was a comedy show. I don't know who the audience
- 10:20was because the apparently there were 4 comedians coming, 4
- 10:23comics coming and that that was the sum total of the audience to
- 10:26that point. But good burger, good people,
- 10:29beautiful, beautiful area. That was day one.
- 10:32That's. Something a heck of a kick off.
- 10:36It was great. There's a lesson here if you
- 10:38want Ryan to help with it and you sell it to him as a
- 10:40vacation, right? And you say that you're going to
- 10:42go to some movie spots. Yeah.
- 10:44And you're. Going to have good burgers.
- 10:47Yeah, we. Didn't even talk about the hotel
- 10:49in Brownsville. Yeah, I really like a baby it.
- 10:53Was like a motel. Yeah, I think it was a
- 10:57Travelodge or something of those ilk.
- 10:59It was fine. But it was fine.
- 11:01It was. It was fine.
- 11:02It was. Interesting look you and you
- 11:04were able to go on with the next day.
- 11:06Yes, yes, very quiet, right. So I slept like a baby there.
- 11:10But and then the next day, yeah, we got back on the road.
- 11:14You know, Southern Oregon is absolutely gorgeous.
- 11:17Northern California. I'd never been, you know, that
- 11:19part of the of either state. I've never been to Oregon
- 11:22before, for that matter. And it was gorgeous and went
- 11:25past is it Mount Shasta, which, Yep, is like this ominous Mount
- 11:28Fuji looking, you know, volcano. That's Northern California.
- 11:31Absolutely stunning. Gorgeous, gorgeous.
- 11:34Went to the world's most dystopian McDonald's for lunch
- 11:37there. Wait in Mount Shasta or in
- 11:40Shasta? Yeah, like, like, like there
- 11:43shouldn't be fast food restaurants there, right?
- 11:44It's too gorgeous of, you know, an area.
- 11:46But we walk in and I guess I hadn't been to a a McDonald's in
- 11:50a while or like walked in and they've literally, at least in
- 11:54this one, removed all the furniture.
- 11:56Put some sort of like Soviet block play structure in the
- 11:59middle, right? There's one guy, the counter
- 12:01there's only about 3 feet wide. And the expectation is that
- 12:04you're supposed to order on a kiosk.
- 12:07God, I sound old, but actual old people were in there completely,
- 12:10you know, heads exploding trying to figure out, you know, what to
- 12:13do. They just wanted to fillet a
- 12:14fish or whatever, you know. So that was interesting.
- 12:17How long did it take? About 25 minutes, right, for the
- 12:19robots. Gentleman didn't.
- 12:21Know there was an old. Gentleman.
- 12:22Yeah. Yeah, you did.
- 12:23Yeah, I. Helped him sort out what his
- 12:25order was. Yeah.
- 12:27Yeah, it was. Yeah.
- 12:28Let's move on quickly. It was it was it was
- 12:30interesting. So I guess I need to leave the
- 12:33house more often. But this was all new to me.
- 12:36But it makes you appreciate your in and out, right?
- 12:38That's right in the neck of the woods.
- 12:39So, you know, no robots there, no kiosks.
- 12:43But you're right, it's good to get out and see what's happening
- 12:45in the rest of the world. Yeah.
- 12:47Yeah, yeah, it was. We had so much fun.
- 12:49Just the banter back and forth, stopping for places and that you
- 12:52all had to stop a lot, right? Because what'd you get?
- 12:549 miles to the gallon? Yeah.
- 12:56It drank fuel and so we had the walkie talkies for comedy.
- 13:00Yeah, actually, we should have probably captured some of it
- 13:02because it was quite funny, wasn't it?
- 13:04It was comedy gold. I can see why they thought we
- 13:06were comedians by the end of the trip.
- 13:09Like they've been spying on us by a walkie-talkie and obviously
- 13:12they've seen. You know, it's amazing what lack
- 13:16of sleep and you know, a box on wheels will will do.
- 13:19But beautiful area, you know, and then as we got further
- 13:23South, you know, got a little more grapes of wrath, right, but
- 13:26still beautiful lots of orchards and stuff and we our next stop
- 13:29was in Winters, California. Great little gem of a town and.
- 13:33Where is. Real vibrant little Main Street.
- 13:36Well, Dan, where is Winters? Yeah, it's near Sonoma, just not
- 13:40far. From OK, so wine country esque.
- 13:44Maybe. Getting there, Yeah, maybe on
- 13:47the edge of the wine. Country.
- 13:48Yeah, this seemed more like Apple country.
- 13:52And, and this is day 2. This is 17 hours into the trip,
- 13:57maybe a little bit less, maybe 16 hours.
- 13:59This box truck is not easy to drive, no.
- 14:02It's. Tiring.
- 14:03We. Yeah, it's like 15 feet long.
- 14:06Yeah. You've got no like if you get to
- 14:09a junction, there's not AT junction.
- 14:12Your visibility is like non existent.
- 14:15So in the end you just pull out on faith because you can't see
- 14:18left or right because you're at an angle.
- 14:21So it's like, all right, I'm in a box guard and it's fully
- 14:24insured, so. Yeah, screw it.
- 14:27Meanwhile, I was in the Audi listening to, you know, sounds
- 14:31through a thing and all of Sinisterius.
- 14:33What's that? Mozart.
- 14:35Yeah, yeah. Basically, you know it wasn't.
- 14:38That much smoking a cigar. Right, right, right.
- 14:40You know, Dan, Dan was so kind. He outfitted the vehicle with
- 14:44snacks and and beverages. So there was a point where I had
- 14:48a full pound of red Twizzlers in my belly.
- 14:52But it was. Appreciated the most.
- 14:55The host with the most. You've got to look after you.
- 14:57You're a wing man, haven't you? That's.
- 14:59Really, I was going to say, I mean, I think as Chariots go,
- 15:02Ryan definitely got the better end of the deal.
- 15:04Absolutely God and I, I don't know, we, it was, it was fun,
- 15:09right? We we spent the night before we
- 15:12got to LA in Valencia, CA. So kind of the North End of I.
- 15:16Guess LA. Tony, Magic Mountain is is is
- 15:20there the M likes magic Mountain.
- 15:22Yeah, I also like traction control, but my Ford, the
- 15:26traction control stopped working three times at three different
- 15:30periods on the trip. So I had no traction control.
- 15:34I went to Chico. Is it Chico in California?
- 15:36Yeah. The winds were so strong that
- 15:39the the wheel was permanently at.
- 15:42What would you call that? I guess you would call that
- 15:452:00. Would it be?
- 15:46Yeah. So I'm literally like fighting
- 15:48the. Wind.
- 15:50They're just holding this at an angle, not pointing straight
- 15:54because the wind was so strong. So yeah, Mr. Mozart over there
- 15:58had the good deal. That's.
- 16:01OK, Yeah, I mean, it really makes you appreciate the
- 16:03aerodynamics of modern cars when?
- 16:05You're driving there? Yeah.
- 16:06I would not. Yeah, the block sidedness and
- 16:09you just go, Oh my gosh, yeah. I was like, what wind?
- 16:13What wind, you know, but right. Dan and I enjoyed an evening at
- 16:16the Extended Stay America in Valencia, where our neighbors at
- 16:20a certain hour, call it the golden hour, they all push out
- 16:25barbecues to to cook dinner. So I'd never seen that in a in a
- 16:31hotel before that. Sounds like quite an experience.
- 16:33We survived the smoking area. Yeah.
- 16:35Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:37I think there was some permanent residents is what I'm getting.
- 16:39In and. So how did you?
- 16:41Land well, I slept well. How did you land on Valencia as
- 16:45your final destination of the trip?
- 16:48Yeah, it was master planning because I wanted to get.
- 16:51Into LA. Not at rush hour, right?
- 16:54Yeah, but it was. But we ended up getting in rush
- 16:58hour. So the Valencia was supposed to
- 17:02be the stopgap to the point where then we could plan our
- 17:05trip into LA. Because for those that have not
- 17:07driven in LA, traffic tends to be very busy and changing lanes
- 17:12sometimes can be really hard. So the final day turned into a
- 17:17military operation, and I'll say that was mainly on my behalf.
- 17:21So I'm calling junction terms by the mile, the half mile, the .2
- 17:26of the mile. We end up taking a minor detour
- 17:31in one of the freeways where the freeway disappears.
- 17:34The lane disappears without any notification to just just
- 17:38outside Valencia. So yeah, I kind of off roaded it
- 17:41for a moment there and luckily no one was hurt.
- 17:44I. Didn't even see it.
- 17:45I didn't even see it was. And Dan let me just for the
- 17:48record, Dan was so kind because at every junction, so to speak,
- 17:53you know, Dan, I had my own room, paid for dinner.
- 17:56Like, I mean, you know, even when I tried.
- 17:58So Dan was a a gentleman, never once made a move on me the whole
- 18:01trip. I'm kidding.
- 18:05Despite playing me with dinners and you know I.
- 18:09Mean so I'm hearing multiple missed opportunities on the
- 18:12trip. We didn't capture the CB audio.
- 18:17Nothing quite as romantic, no. Big dog action.
- 18:26Whispering sweet nothings through a set of cheap walkie
- 18:29talkies. Channel 21.
- 18:31No, but we had a we had a nice meal in Valencia at a Japanese
- 18:36restaurant, which was fun. And I broke my 30 days of not
- 18:41drinking by having a couple of beers because it was, I was at
- 18:44that point, you know, where I felt like I needed a beer.
- 18:46But it was good. You just completed it, got up
- 18:48early Coast. Road trip.
- 18:49That's yeah. Yeah, it was, It was awesome.
- 18:53And and then the next day was into LA, which we passed a big
- 18:57brush fire and we. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 19:01Culminated at a really nice hotel.
- 19:03Yes. Yeah, which was great.
- 19:05Which which I might be broadcasting from right?
- 19:09Now I think you're just going to move in.
- 19:10I this is great. Yeah.
- 19:12You're like speaking. Of so sweet.
- 19:14OK, so did you what Like one of my favorite things on road trips
- 19:17is the car spotting. So what were your like top three
- 19:21favorite car spot moments for each of you?
- 19:24That's. A good good.
- 19:27One. Yeah.
- 19:28What was that car that cut me up?
- 19:31Do you remember? There was a red?
- 19:32You read it? It was an American.
- 19:35Oh, like a Monte Carlo? Or like a Earnhardt?
- 19:37Earnhardt. Edition there was one that
- 19:39decided to really push their luck and cut me up and then
- 19:42proceeded to go into the further traffic.
- 19:44Yeah, so that that definitely wasn't one of the favorite.
- 19:46I saw a Lamborghini. Yeah.
- 19:49Urus, we don't see many nice cars in Portland, like just in
- 19:53on that road, like, you know, the odd Porsche, but that's
- 19:57about it, right. Oh, as we were driving into LA,
- 20:01there was a beautiful Lamborghini.
- 20:02Yeah, like a like a purple, I guess it was Aventador.
- 20:07Yeah, that's that was probably. I feel like and the modern ones
- 20:11look so good in purple it's just like.
- 20:14Oh, yes, yeah. It's perfect.
- 20:16And the guy had his baseball cap on the wrong way.
- 20:18Yeah. That's all about the
- 20:20aerodynamics. You can't win them, all right?
- 20:22Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm shame to admit it.
- 20:28I know that was in the Audi. I actually flipped someone the
- 20:30bird the other day. Welcome to London.
- 20:35Yeah, I'm gonna get short before.
- 20:37You're officially a native. You take more than two minutes
- 20:41of the traffic lights and they use their horns.
- 20:45And I hope I'm not oversharing here, but I walked into Dan's
- 20:47place in Seattle and I see this pistol on the ground and it was
- 20:50like an air like an air pistol that, you know, he claimed was
- 20:54for for self-defense with pigeons or something.
- 20:56But. Pigeons.
- 20:57You know, I'm thinking, you know, and he tossed in the
- 20:58trash. We just, you know, you know,
- 21:00when he move and it's like that last day and you just start
- 21:02throwing stuff in the bin, right?
- 21:04And and we should have packed that for a way, but yeah, we
- 21:09would have been dead for sure. So.
- 21:10We might, we might be a two man crew immediately.
- 21:13Right, right, right. If you're going to pack a gun in
- 21:15LA, should probably fire bullets, but right.
- 21:18But Dan treated me to the nicest meal in LA that last night.
- 21:24We went to Lowry's in Beverly Hills.
- 21:27Oh my gosh, yes. You know what?
- 21:29It's been there forever. I went there.
- 21:31Forever. I went there as a kid when we
- 21:34went, yeah, we went to see Phantom of the Opera and then.
- 21:37We used our. Lowry's.
- 21:39When I was like, amazing, Yeah. I guarantee you it hasn't
- 21:42changed. No, that's one of the best parts
- 21:45for it. Yeah, 1938 is, is, is what I
- 21:48looked up and the meal was great.
- 21:52Our server guys, I think she had been there since 1938 and she
- 21:57was, she was amazing. She was absolutely so nice.
- 22:00Yeah. That's one of the cool things
- 22:02about Lowry's, I think as a company is like, they do treat
- 22:05their people so well that people are there, you know, they've
- 22:08been there for decades and they're happy to be there.
- 22:11Well, well, this lady and she was a lady, uh, let's call her
- 22:15Doreen. I don't think that was her real
- 22:16name, but she looked like a Doreen.
- 22:18I have since constructed a whole like back story for her, like
- 22:22how she came to Hollywood and then her Paramount contract was,
- 22:26you know, dissolved once like color film came on the scene.
- 22:29And she's just been like mixing salads tableside at Lowry's for
- 22:32the last 60, you know, years. And but she was, she was
- 22:35amazing. She was absolutely amazing.
- 22:37Made my night, so thank you. Wherever you are, Doreen, and
- 22:41you're probably not listening, and your name's not Doreen, but
- 22:44Lowery's on La Cienega. That was quite the recommended.
- 22:48It's like an experience. It's not.
- 22:49Yeah, yeah, yeah, Dan did have the prime rib.
- 22:54I mean, that's the only, that's the only real order.
- 22:56That's the move when you go there.
- 22:59Well, they have the chicken. That's right.
- 23:01Yeah, that's right. Yorkshire pudding in many
- 23:03locations in. The US, right?
- 23:05No, it was really good. Like the, the, the good.
- 23:08Like the the corn and the and the you know.
- 23:11The. Potatoes and so, so good.
- 23:14Yeah, I'm sure it was $500.00, but it was delicious it.
- 23:17Really is such an LA institution.
- 23:18So that's really. Good.
- 23:19You got to. So good, So good.
- 23:22Yeah. Anyway, thank you Dan for a
- 23:24great trip. I I am not the easiest
- 23:27travelling buddy, I'll admit that, and sometimes I can be
- 23:30really short. No.
- 23:31Ryan just sucked it all up. I I think we got to a point
- 23:35where we were driving through LA and he's like, which area is
- 23:37this? And I went.
- 23:37I don't fucking. Know well like dance like my you
- 23:42know like he's supposed to know right like he's literally just
- 23:44moving there you know and I've I've got questions like I'm a
- 23:47tourist from Iowa you know it's. What's it?
- 23:50Yeah, Thanks for putting up with me.
- 23:52Across the LA County border, Dan's supposed to know
- 23:54everything. Come on.
- 23:55Right, right. And he will give him six months,
- 23:57give me time. That's amazing.
- 24:00Well. That's like my friends that did
- 24:02the rebel. They came up with a system
- 24:03beforehand where if they were being, if they felt like they
- 24:06were being short with each other, they are like we always
- 24:08had a bag of candy in the car so one of us could grab the candy
- 24:11and hand it to the other one and it was our way.
- 24:13Oh, that's great. Like, just cool it, yeah.
- 24:17Lindsay, the challenge is you got to make the candy last for
- 24:19longer than an hour, right? You know, that's the only.
- 24:22Ryan hadn't even know the Twizzlers.
- 24:23Like what do you think the plan was there?
- 24:28You know, Dan referred to them as Red Vines and you know, and
- 24:32maybe that's what they're called, but Red Vines are
- 24:33different. Red Vines are almost like food
- 24:35based, right? Twizzlers are like a plastic
- 24:38based food, right? And so.
- 24:40I never food. In them.
- 24:41No, no, yeah, that was that was a lot.
- 24:46That was a lot. But it was it was good.
- 24:48It caught us through Red Bulls Celsius drinks, which I think
- 24:52are like Red Bulls for wimps. We had those.
- 24:55We had. What else did you pack in there?
- 24:57Oh, very healthy granola bars offset.
- 25:00Yeah, the the the Twizzlers. It was a party, but and then I
- 25:05got it all right. I got to just let me put in a a
- 25:08quick, just a quick. I don't know what you want to
- 25:12call bump for Dan's new pad. Holy crap.
- 25:15Dan's new pad, which we didn't actually get to see, but I got
- 25:19to see the lobby and the pool on the 6th floor.
- 25:23It's it's right across from the La Brea Tar Pits.
- 25:26Oh my gosh, that's awesome. I mean it like the location is
- 25:29awesome, you know? It's like the 12th floor, right?
- 25:32Or the 12th floor, OK. Yeah.
- 25:34So you have. Beautiful.
- 25:36Woolly mammoth skeletons and a pool on the 12th floor.
- 25:38I love it. Yeah.
- 25:40Yeah, but it's a really small apartment, so.
- 25:43Well, it's gorgeous. I'll be sleeping on the roof, I
- 25:45think. Can we go back to You're not the
- 25:47easiest travel companion? It sounds like there might be
- 25:49some stories there. I didn't experience that at all.
- 25:54Ryan's been too kind. I just after a week of packing
- 25:59so like a constant week of packing.
- 26:01Yep, then Ryan turns up helps me with that final day of packing,
- 26:05which is generally here's a bag. Hold it Ryan.
- 26:08I just throw loads of crap and. Dan was throwing money away.
- 26:12Like it's just like, you know what, I don't have time for that
- 26:14$9 in quarters. Let's just throw it in the
- 26:16trash. $9 like 25. Dollars at least 18.
- 26:21Yeah, I didn't eat either. You have to get ruthless.
- 26:26There's a point where you get ruthless.
- 26:27Yeah. I gave her part of moving
- 26:30because you get to the point where you're like, oh, that
- 26:32actually doesn't matter and I'm tired enough that I'm fine.
- 26:35With it, Yeah, yeah. And I found a load of Porsche
- 26:38stuff that I was going to Chuck out, put it in a bag and gave it
- 26:41to Ryan. So that was that problem.
- 26:43So he puts it in a Microsoft backpack of which he had 11,
- 26:47right, I think. But yeah, so then you can't say
- 26:49no to it because it's literally packed up ready to go.
- 26:53And then like I'm getting looks in the airport like I work for
- 26:56Microsoft so I have. A new favorite backpack.
- 27:00But yeah. But grade me delta.
- 27:06So, so, so to sort of paraphrase a famous line and stand by me,
- 27:10there's one thing I didn't understand, Dan, and that's why
- 27:15was there a set of walkie talkies in the bag you gave me,
- 27:18yet you bought another set of walkie talkies?
- 27:21That's a good. Question OK, so I searched for
- 27:23about a day to try and find the water and I couldn't find them
- 27:28and I had a storage unit I had to empty out as well as the
- 27:30house. So I decided to think ahead with
- 27:34all these like trips you plan ahead and you try and plan for
- 27:37risk and all that sort of stuff. And I thought, well I don't know
- 27:39where they are. I know I owned a pair.
- 27:41Ryan, do you have a pair we can use?
- 27:43No. So I ended up buying a new pair
- 27:46on Amazon and then literally a couple of hours later finding
- 27:48the old. Pair but it.
- 27:49Was too late to cancel, yeah. I'll make a nice gift for a
- 27:52ride. There you go there.
- 27:53Was that how? You find when something is
- 27:56missing is you buy a new one, right?
- 27:59Yeah, No, the old one. I'll turn that.
- 28:00Magically, yeah. Yeah, and I hope I'm not over
- 28:03sharing here, but Dan lived in a very nice building, right?
- 28:06I forget what it was called, but it was kind of like lofts and,
- 28:09you know, and they have a near their mailroom in Seattle.
- 28:12Yeah, W West Seattle. But they have a shelf for like
- 28:17people who are moving out and have things they want to.
- 28:22What's the the you want to pass the donate?
- 28:24To the building like you off. Donate to the building, right?
- 28:27Yeah, so, you know, bags of unopened coffee and coffee's
- 28:31like 30 bucks a bag. So things like that, you know,
- 28:33whatever. And there were things that I'm
- 28:34like, damn, no one will ever take that.
- 28:36And then again, this is a nice building, right?
- 28:382 seconds, they're gone. Magic.
- 28:40It looks like they were magic hills like in the.
- 28:43Building eaten condiment, you know, containers and things
- 28:46gone, you know, but so that was fun.
- 28:50But yeah, I did see. One of the maintenance guys and
- 28:53his pocket was full of toothbrushes.
- 28:56New toothbrushes. New toothbrushes even he has a
- 28:59line right that he won't cross. Yeah, it's great, right?
- 29:03Someone else can benefit from it.
- 29:04Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 29:05Yeah, Yeah. That's great.
- 29:07Yeah. Yeah, anyway, LA man now.
- 29:10Back to. OK, so Ryan, So what were your
- 29:14what were your three favorite like car spotting moments on
- 29:17the? Trip.
- 29:17Yeah, yeah, Dan, I think owes us two more.
- 29:20But you know, because I was a child and I was a child who
- 29:26loved Chips, I still like, I don't know, Phil Wormanside
- 29:29whenever I see like a Chips motorcycle, although they're no
- 29:33longer Kawasaki's, I don't think.
- 29:34I think they're Harleys and BMW's now.
- 29:36But that was fun. I saw a a couple really nice
- 29:40sidekicks, Suzuki sidekicks or possibly Geo trackers along the
- 29:45way, which was which was interesting.
- 29:48You don't see those every day even here in in Denver.
- 29:52And what else? There was a hidden police car.
- 29:56Yeah, that was a tricky tricky. 1.
- 29:58Super crafty. Yeah.
- 30:00Yeah. Like, properly hidden, not like,
- 30:02Yeah, normally you get the two eating Donuts in the middle
- 30:05verge, right. This one was hidden behind like
- 30:09a hedge. Oh yeah.
- 30:10I mean, we, I wasn't, I wasn't capable of speeding in that Ford
- 30:13thing. But yeah, maybe we're going to
- 30:16catch some. People, yeah, I don't to dance
- 30:18mode, didn't see a whole lot of exceptional stuff until we got
- 30:20to LA, right? Yeah.
- 30:23But you look at the regions that you're in like the car culture
- 30:26is LA of all of. Those yeah, yeah, but great car
- 30:29scene in Seattle. I mean, that event we went to
- 30:31was fantastic. Lots of very, very cool cars.
- 30:33Great, great place. We quickly swung by the shop.
- 30:38Is that what's called the the shop?
- 30:39But what is it the? Yeah.
- 30:42It's just the shot. OK yeah, as well.
- 30:45And so that was cool to see a second place.
- 30:47But but back to LA because LA Dan, I'm so happy for you
- 30:51because LA is just awesome and, you know, just there's so much
- 30:55energy. Car scene's great.
- 30:57We we spun through the Peterson real quick, which is always a
- 31:00thrill. Uh, lunch at the Minx Cafe.
- 31:05It's a favorite. Of all of ours.
- 31:06I mean, it's just. You can't go on that.
- 31:08Yeah, yeah. Yeah, even.
- 31:09The garage, you know, parking garage has good stuff so.
- 31:13That's I think that's the mark of a good karma car museum as
- 31:16you pull in and you're like, I don't even need to go inside and
- 31:19then you go inside and it just keeps getting better.
- 31:21So tell. OK, so tell us about.
- 31:23In the lobby, yeah. We get in the lobby and Ryan
- 31:27immediately knows someone from the ground.
- 31:30Oh, yeah. Shut up.
- 31:31Peter Brotman. Yeah.
- 31:32Oh my gosh, whose name? His name wouldn't come to me,
- 31:35you know, at first, but we figured it out.
- 31:39Yeah, he was just casually dropping by.
- 31:42I love Peter Brotman and his his Lamborghini is my daughter's
- 31:47favorite car. Like his his literal car is her
- 31:49favorite car. So hell of a car, yeah.
- 31:51Purple Mira. Yeah.
- 31:53No, green, green, green, I'm sorry.
- 31:55Sorry, purple. Yes, yes, yes, one of.
- 31:57Those purple Lambo, green Mera. Yes, yes.
- 32:00That's a pretty good two-part solution, right?
- 32:02Absolutely, Absolutely. Or purple Aventador.
- 32:05Yeah, yeah. But yeah, I mean, Peter's just
- 32:07such a character and he's so fun and.
- 32:09Just he's awesome, yeah. He has a great collection
- 32:12himself and like, yeah, it's always a treat to see him and
- 32:14that you guys got to see the car too.
- 32:16The Mera. Yes, yes, yes, very brief noise,
- 32:19yeah. That's awesome.
- 32:21We got to visit the new vault as well, didn't.
- 32:23We Yeah. So OK, So what makes it the new
- 32:26vault? Yeah, so they've expanded out
- 32:30the the undercroft of the building and they've decided to
- 32:35put some cool cars in there. So you've now got a guided
- 32:38walkthrough. Instead of being able to just
- 32:41explore wherever you want, they do a curated walkthrough.
- 32:45And it's, you know, you go in there and I think a lot of it
- 32:50may be staging for this new 80s and 90s exhibit is coming.
- 32:53Yeah. But we walk in and there's the
- 32:56Schizetta Zazetta. How do you pronounce it?
- 32:58The the the. I think it's Chizetta, but.
- 33:03There we go. Chizetta.
- 33:05Yeah, I believe. Followed by a Pearl White 959.
- 33:08Yeah. And then in the corner, there
- 33:11are three Lamborghinis that Ryan took particular attraction to.
- 33:17I don't believe. It yeah, you don't see an LMO 2,
- 33:19you know, every day or double O2 or however, saying it these
- 33:21these days. But I mean, next to then an
- 33:24early Countach, right, I mean, you know, early ish countach.
- 33:28I mean, it was, it was and then just positioned in a way where
- 33:31it just made a great photo, right?
- 33:33Like it was a, you know, the cover of it, like an 80s synth,
- 33:36you know, album or something, right?
- 33:38She's like, I know this song, Wait a minute.
- 33:40Yeah, yeah, yeah. It was, It was.
- 33:44It was. Yeah.
- 33:45Just to add to what Dan, Dan, you know, said, it is definitely
- 33:48much more of a flow. And one of the things like now
- 33:50is most of the cars seem to have placards that say what they are
- 33:52and why they're special, right? Because some of the cars, the
- 33:55beauty of the vault, right, is some of the cars seem very
- 33:57ordinary. And then you, you hear the
- 33:58story, right? Like, you know, it looks like an
- 34:01old Benz. And then you find out it's
- 34:02Imelda Marcos's, you know, pepper spray, you know, fling
- 34:08smokescreen aircraft landing light, you know, bends or
- 34:11whatever, right. And so that, that was cool.
- 34:14I, I just, it's, it's, it's been a transition, it's been a, it's
- 34:17been an evolution that vault. And I feel like it's, it's, it's
- 34:20really where it needs to be now and just just awesome.
- 34:23It's one of the one of the best things about the museum,
- 34:25honestly so. It is well and I think among
- 34:28like between the three of us, we've been lucky to see like
- 34:30almost all of the iterations of it, which makes it even more
- 34:33interesting. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:36It's just such a great place. It was fun to see, you know, the
- 34:3880s nineties exhibit billboards popping up, you know, all over
- 34:43LA. That one is going to be a
- 34:44banger. So make sure that you go check
- 34:47that out. That sounds like Matt Farah.
- 34:49Sorry. Hey, we.
- 34:51Have our influences right? Imitation is the sincerest form
- 34:55of. Flattery, right?
- 34:55That's, that's, that's right. What's the one?
- 34:58We're going to mob that car. The next time we're just going
- 35:01to mob it. But so you guys mobbed the
- 35:03moving van down the West Coast? That's what I'm hearing.
- 35:05As much as a moving van could be mobbed, right?
- 35:09We got bricked up is. That another place, right?
- 35:16Yeah, hate to tell. You.
- 35:17It's actually blue licorice. Yeah.
- 35:22Yeah, surprised. Oh, man, yeah, although that,
- 35:25that we talked about this once, I think on the steering
- 35:27committee, there's that licorice that you tear off and it's
- 35:30filled with something and it is like blue or something and it is
- 35:33just like crack. I I don't know what it it's like
- 35:36a filled licorice. I don't know.
- 35:37Look it up. It's it's so good.
- 35:38It's just that's next level. A pound of that would probably
- 35:41kill you, but you know it's. If you want Rome to move a car
- 35:45for you, you just have to promise him that licorice.
- 35:48Filled licorice notice. Since I was a little kid, that
- 35:51has been a a working currency with me.
- 35:54Yeah. That's that's all it takes.
- 35:56You know they got ramen noodles and honey buns in prison, right?
- 36:01So while we were causing chaos on the I-5 S, what have you been
- 36:06up to? Yeah, well, I got to go to thank
- 36:10you to Jaguar Land Rover. I got to go to the Land Rover
- 36:13Defender Experience at the Quail in Carmel and offer some
- 36:17Defenders. Nice.
- 36:19The weekend was for Mother's Day, and so that was my second
- 36:23time off roading Defenders. I got to.
- 36:25The first time I got to do it was at the Destination Defender
- 36:27event in Malibu in November in the fall.
- 36:31It's a rough life. You know, like I am happy to
- 36:34take one for the team so I can bring it back and share with all
- 36:37of. You next time take the team
- 36:39please. Right.
- 36:39Yeah, that's the goal, right? We get to the point where the
- 36:43whole team gets to go. So this was a really cool event.
- 36:47Land Rover put it together and it was offered to Defender
- 36:49owners, so their customers. But it was the weekend before
- 36:52Mother's Day, and so they offered it as a Mother's Day,
- 36:55like, celebration and experience for women to come and bring
- 36:58their defenders and put the cars through their paces and really
- 37:02experience where these cars truly shine.
- 37:05I mean, this is what they're designed for.
- 37:07Like, this is their history. I was talking to Jeff Ahudin,
- 37:11who handles PR for JLR North America, and he said, you know,
- 37:16a lot of the customers don't realize, like, the green Oval
- 37:19badge, like, it really does still mean what it has meant
- 37:21through the history of the brand.
- 37:23And they are still incredibly capable and as much as they're
- 37:27used for the school run and daily life, that's one of my
- 37:31favorite things about them is that you can drive them to the
- 37:35off road area and it's a lovely drive there because you have all
- 37:38the creature comforts and then you can kick ass on the trails
- 37:42and then drive it home and be just as comfortable.
- 37:45But I mean, and really the team at the Quail location, like
- 37:51could not have been nicer. They all had incredible stories,
- 37:54like Sterling in particular, who runs the school, and then
- 37:57Brenton, who's one of the head instructors.
- 37:59Sterling. And I got to chat for a minute
- 38:01because it turned out that my dad was actually at a vintage
- 38:03race event at Laguna Seca, which is just a few minutes from
- 38:07Quail. And they were nice enough to
- 38:09loan me a brand new 1:30 to go to the track to see my dad
- 38:13because like, we're, we're like 20 minutes apart.
- 38:16You've got to, you know, like I have to take advantage of this
- 38:19and spend some time with him and like, you know, that's always
- 38:22nice. So got to go in the paddock with
- 38:23him. It was an SVRA event and his
- 38:27friend that he cruised for during Car Week who has the 65R
- 38:33Clone Mustang that he races. They were racing there because
- 38:36to qualify for the vintage races at Car Week, you have to race
- 38:39two or three times during the year ahead of it.
- 38:42And then you tell them like here's where I've raced and they
- 38:44look at the qualifications and then you get in for Car Week.
- 38:47So they were there doing that, one of the qualifying races.
- 38:50So I got to go in the paddock and it was a very interesting
- 38:53class. It's much more diverse than
- 38:56during car week where it's more specific, you know, time period
- 38:59or make of car. Like the car next to him was a
- 39:02935 Interscope car Porsche, yeah, which was stunning.
- 39:07And there was another 935. There was a brand new Aston
- 39:09Martin in his class. Really.
- 39:11Oh that would be awesome to. Watch really cool mix of cars
- 39:16you know so it was it was like the perfect weekend for me
- 39:19because I got a taste of like being at the track and vintage
- 39:22racing and I got to do it from the comfort of this amazing 130
- 39:27and then go back and hang out at quail with.
- 39:29There were some other women in the media who were there to
- 39:32cover the event. And then the next day we got to
- 39:34meet up with the customers who had joined as well.
- 39:38And there was 1 gal in particular.
- 39:40She had brought her 12 and 14 year old daughters with her as a
- 39:45Mother's Day experience. So well, you know, when we did
- 39:49the day, they went through a bunch of different exercises
- 39:51with us and we started out just doing kind of basic trail like
- 39:55crawling and driving and learning, learning the cars
- 39:58really in their capability because they have all of this
- 40:01technological, you know, support basically that lets you off road
- 40:05with confidence and the cars do so much of it, but not in a way
- 40:09that it takes away from your experience.
- 40:10It really just. You know, you can depend on them
- 40:13and they're designed to do this so you could sort of just relax
- 40:16and enjoy the actual off roading.
- 40:18But then we got to one part that they were calling the Fulcrum
- 40:21where we were learning like how do you go over a really steep
- 40:24obstacle? And at one point, you know, like
- 40:27the front left tire was 4 feet off the ground.
- 40:30And they're, you know, that's when we started learning how to
- 40:33spot for each other and how you work with a spotter because a
- 40:36lot of times you can't talk to each other.
- 40:38And so they had Daphne Green works with the school and she is
- 40:42a legend in the off roading world.
- 40:45She's done the Camel trophy for a long, long, long time.
- 40:48And she's just this amazing mix of like warmth and humility and
- 40:53just like badassery. And she absolutely knows
- 40:56everything there is to know about off roading.
- 40:59And she's worked with Land Rover for a long time.
- 41:02And so she was my spotter going over the.
- 41:04Fulcrates. I'm like, listen, I don't know
- 41:07whose life this is, but I'm so happy.
- 41:09Yeah, yeah. But it's a wild experience
- 41:12because, you know, you inch forward, Yeah.
- 41:15And you know, the car is going to tip forward the front wheel,
- 41:18you know, and you're doing the opposite.
- 41:20The back wheel then is 4 feet in the air.
- 41:22And I had this really fun gal with me, Steph Kay.
- 41:26She's from the Bay Area, and she normally covers food, but she
- 41:28was there to cover this off road experience.
- 41:31And she let me drive the fulcrum.
- 41:34And after we did it, I said, how was that being a passenger?
- 41:36You know, I'm in control. I'm like, there's an element of
- 41:40you have a little better sense of what's happening in the
- 41:43moment. And I so I said, how was that as
- 41:46a passenger? She said, you know, it wasn't
- 41:47actually as sort of drastic as we both had.
- 41:49And I said, yeah, me too. And she just held up her phone.
- 41:54She's like, Are you sure? And it was me making this
- 41:57shocked face as the car settled onto the front wheel.
- 42:00We need to see that that's. We'll find it.
- 42:04But yeah, I mean, and then we had, I think the most memorable
- 42:07moment was at the end they had us really experience the hill
- 42:11descent control, which is kind of one of their signature, you
- 42:14know, like capabilities of the cars and you descend the hill,
- 42:18the car handles it so you don't brake, which goes against every
- 42:23human instinct that you. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:25And you know, Sterling and I had gotten to know each other.
- 42:28We got to talk on Friday when he got me set up with the 1:30 and
- 42:31then he ended up being our coach for a good chunk of the day on
- 42:34Saturday. So we've gotten to talk a lot.
- 42:36And he came up to the car and he said, all right, I've set the
- 42:40and one of the interesting ways is the way you control the speed
- 42:42for the hill descent control is you use the cruise control so
- 42:45you can set the maximum and the minimum speed.
- 42:48So he came up and he's like, all right, I've set your cruise
- 42:50control, You're all set. And he said, I'm going to walk
- 42:52you up to the edge. And it was like, if you've ever
- 42:55been on track at Laguna Seca, when you go down the Corkscrew,
- 42:58there's a moment where all you see is the nose of the car and
- 43:00the sky. So this was like the off road
- 43:03equivalent of that because we got to the edge of this hill and
- 43:06all I could see was the nose of the car down.
- 43:09And so he's like, all right, I'm going to walk you up to the edge
- 43:12and then you're going to take your foot off the brake.
- 43:14And he's like, and the only thing that you have to do is not
- 43:18touch the brake the entire way down.
- 43:19Wow. Yeah.
- 43:20And it was, you know, for me, like, I'm just getting started
- 43:24off roading. It was a 26° incline, which was
- 43:29significant for me. And I really had to talk myself
- 43:32into taking my foot off the brake.
- 43:34But that was me. And the car, like, the car
- 43:38handles it like a champ, as you would expect.
- 43:39Like, they're so good. But so it's an exercise in
- 43:43character building of like, OK, got to trust the equipment.
- 43:46So where at the quail is this? I'm trying to picture where you
- 43:49were. So there's the lodge where
- 43:54there's kind of like the Golf Club, which is right by where
- 43:57the quail like event is during car week, right on the golf
- 44:01course. It's right across the main road
- 44:03from that, the school. And then you go back into the
- 44:06hills behind the. Resort.
- 44:07OK, cool. And they have, I think like 120
- 44:09or 130 acres of trails. No kidding.
- 44:12So well kept secret because Land Rover are permanently there.
- 44:15They've got a. Right.
- 44:16They have that. That's what I learned when I
- 44:19went to the event in the fall is they have three permanent
- 44:21schools. One's at Quail and Carmel, 1 is
- 44:24in Asheville, NC, and then one's in Vermont.
- 44:26And then they also have a mobile team that moves around the US.
- 44:30And that was, that's the team that does the Destination
- 44:32Defender events because they move, you know, they have them
- 44:34in New York, they've done them in Austin, obviously Malibu.
- 44:37So yeah, this event was part of sort of letting the community
- 44:42know that it's something that they have available and hoping
- 44:45more people take advantage. And Lindsay, you talked about
- 44:49Laguna Seca. I think we should congratulate
- 44:52firstly, the friends of Laguna Seca because last week they
- 44:55announced a very significant partnership.
- 44:58They've partnered with Porsche. Yes, Porsche is now the official
- 45:01car of Laguna Seca. It's amazing.
- 45:04They're looking at they can have a driving school there as well.
- 45:06So yeah, sign me up. Yeah, I know.
- 45:09That's awesome. Congratulations all around.
- 45:11And it sounds like the race track is safe, which is what we
- 45:13all want to hear. And yeah.
- 45:16Yeah, a long a long history to continue.
- 45:19Excellent. One of my favorite places.
- 45:21Yeah, yeah. So yes, highly recommend,
- 45:24especially if you have a defender because I think if you
- 45:26own a defender it even comes with a portion or a day at one
- 45:29of the schools. And.
- 45:31You know, you really get to enjoy what those cars are
- 45:34designed to do. Yeah, yeah, it's Sterling.
- 45:37Has Sterling been with Land Rover for like decades or am I
- 45:40thinking of someone else? So you might be thinking of
- 45:42Sterling Moss, who Oh my Sterling actually met at Laguna
- 45:48Seca, Oh. It's yours, Sterling now isn't
- 45:50it? Now he's my Sterling.
- 45:54I know I left and I went OK. I just.
- 45:56I want Daphne Green in my pocket or on my folder all the time.
- 45:58I want Sterling in my pocket all the time.
- 46:00Like just just like such an amazing team and they really
- 46:04love what they're doing. And they were so excited to
- 46:07share it with everybody who was there and make sure that
- 46:10everybody had a good time and felt comfortable and felt
- 46:13confident. And, you know, I mean, one of
- 46:16one of the people in the group was this really incredible
- 46:19woman. I want to say she was late 70s,
- 46:21early 80s. She showed up.
- 46:23She has a Defender 90. It's gorgeous.
- 46:24She had found it, you know, sourced it and bought it
- 46:27herself. And she was definitely the
- 46:30oldest in the group. But like, what a badass.
- 46:33I mean she. Did absolutely.
- 46:34She'd all be so badass. They had her go 1st and she was
- 46:38like, Oh my gosh, of course you know, everybody's watching.
- 46:40Me. Yeah, Yeah.
- 46:41And, yeah, I mean, she was a widow.
- 46:43And she said, you know, of course would I rather be doing
- 46:45this with my partner? But that's not how life unfolds.
- 46:47So it was such an example of resilience and, like, never stop
- 46:52learning. Never stop trying new things,
- 46:54like, you know, get out of your own way in a sense.
- 46:57And, like, just say yes to things.
- 46:59I mean, it was so amazing. And the reason I asked about
- 47:02Sterling is years ago I did a Land Rover, just a day long
- 47:05driving school with a guy and Sterling, like that's the name
- 47:09you want, right? If you yeah, that role.
- 47:10Right. Well, he has been with the
- 47:12company off and on for I think 15 years.
- 47:14So it's. Possible OK, that would that
- 47:16would track. I mean, I think I did it in my
- 47:19parents discovery too. So that was probably at least 15
- 47:22years ago, but I remember just learning so much in that, you
- 47:26know, day, right? You know, then, you know, and so
- 47:29much of it is counterintuitive, right?
- 47:32And of course, now the tech and you know, the vehicles
- 47:34themselves have come so much further along.
- 47:36How is the 130 have only ever driven the 110 in in the new?
- 47:40Defense, I was really excited to try it because I'd only driven
- 47:43the 110 also. Yeah, well, this will be great.
- 47:45I can share with you guys, you know, I could share with our
- 47:47fans and, and just for my own personal experience because I
- 47:50see them, you know, occasionally on the school run or whatever.
- 47:53They look good. They look, they look.
- 47:54Proportions are right, Yeah. I think the, I think they all
- 47:57look great at this point. They've done such a good job
- 47:59with the design. And so that was one of the first
- 48:02things I did when I got in was look in the rearview mirror and
- 48:04turn around and look behind me to see like, does it look like a
- 48:06wind tunnel? Because it is longer, You know,
- 48:08it's about two feet longer than the 110.
- 48:11And what's so crazy is that it looks the same as a 110.
- 48:14They've done such a good job with the design that you don't
- 48:17notice that it's so much longer. And like, I took it from quail
- 48:22to the track and I went over a Lorealist grade for those
- 48:24familiar with the area, which is a very fun road.
- 48:27And, you know, I thought this will be a good test of the car
- 48:30because it's not a light car, obviously.
- 48:32And that's a challenging Rd. You go up quite a bit and down
- 48:35and it's windy. And the only limitation was I
- 48:37got stuck behind somebody that was really slow.
- 48:41He. Would not have Land Rover.
- 48:43Right. I'm like, listen, come on now.
- 48:45Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 48:47No, it was. So awesome.
- 48:48I we need to just get out and do more of this stuff.
- 48:51You know, just more of these opportunities.
- 48:53There's a Rocky Mountain Automotive press event coming up
- 48:56here in a few weeks. They do every spring and there's
- 48:59a whole portfolio cars. Apparently there's an Arturo
- 49:01this year, so that'll be fun. Well, you got to drive a
- 49:05defender last year with the Steelys on it, right?
- 49:07God, a couple of times and I fell in love with it.
- 49:10You know, just that would be the one I would want if it wasn't
- 49:13the 2 door, the short wheelbase with the giant V8.
- 49:17So how about our how about our friend Jay on Spike's car radio?
- 49:22How about our friend Jay on Spike's?
- 49:24Car. It's always so fun to hear Jay
- 49:26and I think it felt like he delved a little more into the
- 49:29story, kind of of Sheffield. This time because he's been on.
- 49:32Before and we've heard sort of a rough framework, but.
- 49:35Have you been on spikes before? He's been on spikes before, but
- 49:38it's been a. Bit yeah, OK, OK OK because
- 49:41yeah, he he's great. He's just he's such a modest guy
- 49:44such a nice guy, right. And I absolutely love what he's
- 49:47doing with the watches and, you know, just that green watch is
- 49:51so cool. Some of the stuff that's in the
- 49:52pipeline and we need to have him on you know, we we had him on
- 49:56the steering committee, had him on the road show, but we need to
- 49:59have him on that car show. He always comes bearing gifts,
- 50:03which is. Nice bonus.
- 50:04I mean, we're not going to complain about that, right?
- 50:06No, that's so Jay, if you're listing the next time you're in,
- 50:10you're in town, one of these towns, right, because we.
- 50:12Can do this remotely Anyone of the?
- 50:13Town hell, you don't even have to be here, we just give you a
- 50:15link right? That's how this works.
- 50:17So love to have you back on. So I know he's, he's just such
- 50:21a, he's such a generous, like just such a genuine generous
- 50:24person, which is like makes it even more fun.
- 50:27And yeah, I mean, yeah. Should we do a wrist check?
- 50:29I have my Navy face one on. I I I have an explorer 2 on
- 50:34tonight that oh. And has Speaking of green
- 50:38watches. Yeah, yeah, yes.
- 50:40But the point is that those watches in Sheffield, Yeah.
- 50:44Live, live happily next to these, you know, that's right.
- 50:48But I think at this point I actually probably wear my
- 50:49Sheffield watches more than anything else, right?
- 50:52They just, I don't know, they're easier to live with, so.
- 50:55Well, and I feel like they're so you can, I mean, dress them up
- 50:59and dress them down like they go with everything.
- 51:02And it's like if it's a casual outfit, it elevates it.
- 51:04If it's a dressy outfit, they fit right in and they're so
- 51:07useful and functional and you don't stress about like, oh, I
- 51:11bumped it into something. Or whatever.
- 51:12I just. I they're my favorite,
- 51:14absolutely. I've said before, I'll say it
- 51:16again, I get more compliments on my Sheffield's or more questions
- 51:19than I ever have with Rolex or any other brands.
- 51:22So, yeah, you know, so do you remember that button, the now
- 51:25you know button? Yeah.
- 51:27I've had so many, like I was at Willow I think in the fall and I
- 51:31was taking pictures and I somebody saw me taking a picture
- 51:34of my watch with the Willow sign and they were like, what's that?
- 51:36And they had never heard of the brand.
- 51:37And I got to tell them all about it and they're like, I'm going
- 51:39to check that out when I get home.
- 51:40Absolutely. Yeah, so.
- 51:42It's it's a conversation starter on top of.
- 51:44Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 51:46Yeah. But what else do we know?
- 51:47I mean, it's damn near an hour, but Dan, you are are fully
- 51:51ensconced in in this hotel room in LA waiting to move into your
- 51:55your actual place this weekend. Feeling good?
- 51:59Yes, I it's been a long week, so I'll be happy when I'm Yeah, so
- 52:04it's been nice too. I pinged you earlier and you
- 52:07said, Oh yeah, I was just hanging out by the pool.
- 52:11How? Was yesterday Ryan?
- 52:13How was yesterday? I felt like I deserved it after.
- 52:18I think it's because this TV is keeps changing.
- 52:21I can't change it. So it's he's.
- 52:24Just he's treating us to the mood lighting in his very nice
- 52:26hotel. It's a colloidal silver that we
- 52:29were talking about before the last show.
- 52:32Right, I'm on a new health kick. I'm looking a little blue.
- 52:36Anyway, that's right, That's right.
- 52:38Yeah, until that candy. Back to the filled licorice.
- 52:44Nice call back. Where'd we go?
- 52:46Any of the car stuff guys? I mean, I feel like there's
- 52:51always car stuff, right? Yeah, yeah, I'm.
- 52:54At the Advance Wagon Fest. This weekend, yeah.
- 52:57That's Monday, Peterson. Adam Peterson and I believe Matt
- 53:02Farah is going to be bringing his Tycam with HRE wheels, so I
- 53:09guess he's doing a partnership with Advance and you can get
- 53:12stickers of his car. Oh that's awesome, I got to see
- 53:15the car at Air Water and it looks fantastic with the new
- 53:18wheels on it. Nice, nice, nice.
- 53:20Lindsay, you going to be anywhere?
- 53:24I may just be on PCH just doing some informal car spotting.
- 53:27Something something good. Well, I hope to be at the Fuel
- 53:31Fed Boulder event on Sunday and then also Vance is doing an
- 53:33event here on Saturday. But my daughter, my 12 year old
- 53:37daughter is doing her first 5K on Saturday and I don't know
- 53:39that I can have a great time and hope to see my Fuel friends in
- 53:43Boulder on Sunday. So yeah, that's awesome.
- 53:48Real quick. It is.
- 53:50It is. There's I'm not doing the. 5K
- 53:52with her. There was a time I could have
- 53:55done that, but that time is not now.
- 53:58But you're going to be there to support.
- 54:00That's what matters. Absolutely, Absolutely.
- 54:01We're proud of her and she's. She I got her a Myers Manx Cafe,
- 54:06a sweatshirt that she very proudly wore to school.
- 54:10This. Yeah, you know the look with
- 54:13your. Daughter Lindsay.
- 54:14Right. They wear these oversized
- 54:15sweatshirts and, you know, yeah, there's a whole.
- 54:18Yeah, that and the braces, like there's a lot.
- 54:21Of like 12 year milestones, absolutely, absolutely.
- 54:24But just a quick. Reminder if I may, if you're
- 54:27listening, thank you. Make sure that you do follow us
- 54:29on Instagram. It's that car show podcast and
- 54:33then us individually and make sure you subscribe, you rate and
- 54:36review whether it's on Apple podcasts or Spotify or what have
- 54:41you right wherever you find your we.
- 54:45May have some stickers. For you in the very near future,
- 54:47absolutely, Absolutely, yeah. Stick them wherever you can.
- 54:52Bathroom stalls, flag poles, mailboxes back in EU halls.
- 54:58That's that's right. That's great, Dan.
- 55:01We'll look back and laugh. I mean, we actually already are
- 55:04so right, you know? Right.
- 55:05Right. Sign of a good fight.
- 55:06I haven't. Returned it yet?
- 55:08Though so we. Can't just return on Saturday
