- 0:00Speaker 1: Good evening from New York. I'm Chris Hayes.
- 0:02Speaker 2: America's disastrous war in the Middle East is now in
- 0:04Speaker 2: at six month, its economy is in a tailspin, and
- 0:07Speaker 2: Donald Trump is in a rage because his ballroom has
- 0:10Speaker 2: been put on hold. Remember this is what Donald Trump
- 0:13Speaker 2: wanted and promised, a ninety thousand square foot white and
- 0:17Speaker 2: gold behemoth that would dwarf the actual White House. It
- 0:20Speaker 2: would be the biggest thing on that plot of land
- 0:23Speaker 2: by far. This is what Donald Trump has given you,
- 0:27Speaker 2: a gaping hole in the heart of the country.
- 0:30Speaker 1: He posted this photo this week. Look at that. He's
- 0:34Speaker 1: proud of that.
- 0:35Speaker 2: He is proud of demolishing the East Wing without asking
- 0:38Speaker 2: any of our permission or Congress to build a Trump monstrosity,
- 0:42Speaker 2: to build a ego palace for himself. But today a
- 0:46Speaker 2: federal appeals court ruled two to one nobody that actually
- 0:50Speaker 2: he is supposed to ask permission because and this really
- 0:54Speaker 2: cannot be stressed enough, it is not his house or
- 0:58Speaker 2: his land.
- 0:59Speaker 1: It is out.
- 1:01Speaker 2: And so the appeals court majority put on hold what
- 1:04Speaker 2: has to be the single biggest renovation ever undertaken by
- 1:08Speaker 2: a renter in all of human history.
- 1:11Speaker 1: And it's lengthy ruling. The court majority wrote, the.
- 1:14Speaker 2: President has no and claims no constitutionally assigned authority over
- 1:17Speaker 2: that property. Whether or not a massive ballroom should be
- 1:20Speaker 2: constructed as for Congress to decide, and is not a
- 1:22Speaker 2: matter for executive self help. That ruling appears to affected
- 1:28Speaker 2: Trump deeply. He is in his feelings about it on
- 1:30Speaker 2: the internet. That's based on the nearly five hundred word
- 1:34Speaker 2: rant he posted on social media. Quote, the military and
- 1:36Speaker 2: Secret Service are viewing this horrendous, politically motivated and unwoff
- 1:39Speaker 2: ruling as a national security threat to our nation in
- 1:42Speaker 2: that the entire complex is being built for the protection
- 1:45Speaker 2: of our country and initially all future presidents. It is
- 1:48Speaker 2: all tied together as one big, expensive, and very complex unit,
- 1:51Speaker 2: which is vital for national security and military operations of
- 1:54Speaker 2: the United States of America. This unjust decision must be
- 1:57Speaker 2: overturned by the Supreme Court in its entirety. I didn't
- 2:00Speaker 2: read the whole thing, just you know, notice, as soon
- 2:04Speaker 2: as they strike it down, it's like the National security
- 2:06Speaker 2: military complex and not the ballroom like it was the ballroom.
- 2:09Speaker 1: He called it the ballroom.
- 2:10Speaker 2: He talked about how there had to be a ballroom
- 2:11Speaker 2: that was the original the project. Now it's like the
- 2:15Speaker 2: military complex. So forget about Iran, where we are still
- 2:19Speaker 2: at war. There's still no deal. Forget about the price
- 2:21Speaker 2: of gas, which is still above four dollars a gallon,
- 2:23Speaker 2: has been for months. If you want to know what
- 2:26Speaker 2: the President of the United States spends all of his
- 2:30Speaker 2: time thinking about as president, it's clear as day.
- 2:33Speaker 1: This is it. I mean, it's obvious if you watch him,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but do not take my word for it.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Here's the reporter who may know Trump better than any others,
- 2:41Speaker 2: Maggie Haberman of the New York Times.
- 2:44Speaker 1: How much of his time actually goes into the renovation
- 2:46Speaker 1: now a lot.
- 2:48Speaker 3: If you looked at like a chart of his mind
- 2:52Speaker 3: share like this, I will say about getting into his mind,
- 2:56Speaker 3: like seventy percent of it would be on his renovations.
- 2:58Speaker 3: It's to see thing, but it's it's I always think
- 3:03Speaker 3: of legacy with him different than the way we usually
- 3:05Speaker 3: use the word legacy.
- 3:06Speaker 1: It's oh, it's.
- 3:08Speaker 3: It's not what am I leaving behind for the world.
- 3:11Speaker 3: It's what am I leaving behind so the world can't
- 3:13Speaker 3: kick me off the world.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Trump cannot see anything beyond these projects to glorify him.
- 3:19Speaker 1: The ballroom. There was the reflecting pool.
- 3:21Speaker 2: There's the arch, which he's still like raising money for
- 3:23Speaker 2: him from god knows who, and in god knows which way.
- 3:26Speaker 2: There's the Trump coins and the Trump passports and the
- 3:29Speaker 2: statues He's gilding everywhere, and all this weird nonsense. The
- 3:34Speaker 2: man wants to be surrounded by his gold leaf Landlord
- 3:36Speaker 2: special decor everywhere he goes. Even today, sitting in a
- 3:40Speaker 2: White House press conference for the mining industry behind a
- 3:44Speaker 2: table with a sign reading American Mining, American Jobs right,
- 3:49Speaker 2: clearly set up by his political minders, who are like,
- 3:51Speaker 2: you have to talk about things ostensibly about the American people.
- 3:56Speaker 1: All he wanted to do was talk about renovating.
- 4:01Speaker 4: I'm liking the chandeliers, I really I like those Corinthian columns.
- 4:05Speaker 4: But cutting them out would be not good. Those are
- 4:09Speaker 4: beautiful columns. But I'm allowed to do it every once
- 4:13Speaker 4: in a while, coming here and grab a painting and
- 4:15Speaker 4: put it at the Oval office.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Right. You can't help himself. He cannot help him all.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And again, this all would be funny if he didn't,
- 4:23Speaker 2: if he wasn't the President of Ied States, and there
- 4:26Speaker 2: wasn't a war going on. But at least there's nothing
- 4:28Speaker 2: else going on today the president should be focusing on right.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Minus twenty three thousand, no rebounds for the July jobs report,
- 4:39Speaker 5: negative twenty three thousand, Again a disappointing jobs report.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Twenty three thousand jobs lost in July.
- 4:47Speaker 2: It's so bad that even the folks of Fox cannot
- 4:49Speaker 2: find out what it's been it. Yes, we lost a
- 4:50Speaker 2: ton of jobs last month, but that actually isn't even
- 4:53Speaker 2: the worst news because economists expected a gain of eighty
- 4:56Speaker 2: three thousand jobs in July. Instead we lost twenty three thousand.
- 4:59Speaker 2: One hundred thousand job miss and this report also revised
- 5:03Speaker 2: May and June job numbers down by one hundred three thousand,
- 5:07Speaker 2: and yet unemployment took down, which is a sure sign
- 5:09Speaker 2: that more people are just dropping out of the label
- 5:11Speaker 2: market entirely instead of seeking new jobs. Fact, according to
- 5:15Speaker 2: this chart by our friend the economist Justin Woolfer, is
- 5:17Speaker 2: the only job sectors that have grown.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Since Trump took office.
- 5:21Speaker 2: And this is ironic when you think about the like
- 5:23Speaker 2: macho macho man appeal of Donald Trump. Right, we're gonna
- 5:26Speaker 2: get back to mining and we're going to build stuff
- 5:28Speaker 2: and manufacturing the only thing that has drown is healthcare
- 5:31Speaker 2: and social services.
- 5:33Speaker 1: That's it. That's where all the jobs are.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The rest of the US economy has cut more than
- 5:37Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty thousand jobs. Now, those are numbers
- 5:41Speaker 2: that will concern most presidents going into a miatrum election.
- 5:44Speaker 2: But concerned is not how Donald Trump rolls. He's he's unbothered.
- 5:51Speaker 2: As he sat down today with punch Bowl Cow founder
- 5:53Speaker 2: and ms NOW political contributor Jake Sherman.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Well, a lot of people are saying I'm one of
- 6:01Speaker 6: the greatest presidents ever. But our country right now is
- 6:04Speaker 6: doing better than it's ever done. You know, when I
- 6:06Speaker 6: see polls on the economy, I should have I should
- 6:09Speaker 6: have one hundred and fifty one hundred percent because we
- 6:13Speaker 6: have the greatest This is the golden age of America.
- 6:19Speaker 1: I don't think that's how percentages work.
- 6:22Speaker 2: Put that aside, it absolutely is not a golden age
- 6:25Speaker 2: in America.
- 6:27Speaker 1: I mean it is in the Oval Office, and it is.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Across the White House, and it is if you're Donald
- 6:32Speaker 2: Trump shanking your putts and having your caddy make up
- 6:36Speaker 2: for you. It's a golden age in a literal sense
- 6:40Speaker 2: in that Oval Office, where Trump is literally adding the
- 6:42Speaker 2: color gold to everything. But this week ms NOW reporter
- 6:46Speaker 2: Alex Tabitt spoke with Trump voters in Ohio, and their
- 6:49Speaker 2: general feeling was this all sucks.
- 6:55Speaker 7: I was hoping that gas was going to go down
- 6:58Speaker 7: so I could do some thing. You know, you can't
- 7:03Speaker 7: do anything with gas prices.
- 7:06Speaker 4: And.
- 7:08Speaker 8: You just can't.
- 7:09Speaker 7: You can't afford to breathe.
- 7:11Speaker 9: At this point.
- 7:11Speaker 8: Well, I can get laid off tomorrow and then I'm
- 7:13Speaker 8: pretty much homeless because you know you can't save.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Now now, I'm good on Trump man.
- 7:20Speaker 7: That's all I got to say.
- 7:21Speaker 8: What does it feel like to be living in these
- 7:24Speaker 8: conditions right now?
- 7:25Speaker 1: In these economic conditions right now?
- 7:27Speaker 7: Hurt and very hurt. I try to do sorry, I cried.
- 7:35Speaker 7: I try to do a lot for my kids, and
- 7:38Speaker 7: I can't do much.
- 7:39Speaker 8: If you could send a message to the President right now,
- 7:41Speaker 8: oaja to him. He needs to look out for the
- 7:43Speaker 8: American people in stead of himself. Put us first.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Does America feel great again?
- 7:49Speaker 8: No, not at all.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Sam sin is the managing editor of The Bulwark and
- 7:55Speaker 2: an ms now contributor. Valencia Johnson's a Democratic strategist who
- 7:58Speaker 2: worked as a senior advisor of the twenty two Biden
- 8:00Speaker 2: campaign and they both join me. Now, Sam, as I
- 8:04Speaker 2: watched that tape, I was thinking that Alex Tabot should
- 8:06Speaker 2: have said to them, but what about the ballroom? Aren't
- 8:08Speaker 2: you psyched about the ballroom? Isn't isn't that? What about that?
- 8:12Speaker 2: What if we build that ballroom, wouldn't that and we
- 8:14Speaker 2: put in Corinthian colums? Wouldn't that make you happier?
- 8:20Speaker 10: Yeah, they might not go for the Corinthian columns. It
- 8:22Speaker 10: might not be the choice.
- 8:24Speaker 1: You know. That's kind of like a.
- 8:25Speaker 10: Really heartbreaking video, and it really got to the dichotomy
- 8:28Speaker 10: of what's happening here. The obsession with the ballroom and
- 8:31Speaker 10: all these beautification projects. It's clearly something that he loves
- 8:36Speaker 10: to do. It's where his attention is, as Maggie noted,
- 8:40Speaker 10: and it comes at this obvious political cost, because if
- 8:42Speaker 10: you're just an average political observer, you're watching the president
- 8:46Speaker 10: and just spend all his time and day and energy
- 8:48Speaker 10: doing these renovation projects, and you know, the ballroom. It's
- 8:53Speaker 10: totally absurd, right, I mean, of all the things that
- 8:55Speaker 10: he's done, obviously he's done more pernicious and damaging things,
- 8:58Speaker 10: more hurtful things, more ethical things. Although I will say
- 9:01Speaker 10: one of the elements of the bottom that's really underappreciated.
- 9:04Speaker 10: How ethical it is right who is funding the actual
- 9:07Speaker 10: private stream of donations, We just don't know. But putting
- 9:09Speaker 10: that aside, if you just step back and you think
- 9:12Speaker 10: by what he did, he literally demolished a third of
- 9:16Speaker 10: the White House complex without saying he was going to
- 9:19Speaker 10: do it, getting in permission to do it, in fact,
- 9:20Speaker 10: his first inclination where he's going to leave the East
- 9:23Speaker 10: wing intact. And now he's like, well, can't I just
- 9:26Speaker 10: go ahead and do it? When the law, when the
- 9:28Speaker 10: courts step in, And it's symbolic of a president's who
- 9:31Speaker 10: is distracted, who's egotistical, who is focus in all the
- 9:35Speaker 10: wrong directions, and who's probably gonna pay.
- 9:38Speaker 1: The pulse for it.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Yeah, this this is this line from the rule. I mean,
- 9:42Speaker 2: I keep thinking about this idea. I mean sort of
- 9:44Speaker 2: a jokey idea, but like if you're renting a house
- 9:46Speaker 2: that have a garage and you were just like, I'm
- 9:48Speaker 2: gonna demo the garage, I'm gonna build something here.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Yeah, see William who shows up.
- 9:53Speaker 5: Like no, no, no, no, no.
- 9:54Speaker 2: You can't no, you can't do that. Like this is
- 9:57Speaker 2: the ruling is the whole thing has nothing at all
- 9:58Speaker 2: to do with it. The proposed rooms desirable or not.
- 10:01Speaker 2: As a matter of policy at this culinary stage, the
- 10:03Speaker 2: National Trust has shown compelling it.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Congress has not seen it.
- 10:06Speaker 2: On fettered authority, the executive to gen randomly redesign, reshape,
- 10:09Speaker 2: and reconstruct the White House the people's house to fit
- 10:12Speaker 2: a particular presences desires like it isn't his house, it's ours,
- 10:16Speaker 2: and alensia on the job's part, and also the price part.
- 10:20Speaker 1: When you watch that.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Tape that Alex Tabit put together, which is great, I
- 10:25Speaker 2: got to think about Biden people, people that were in
- 10:28Speaker 2: the administration who could not really control the fact that
- 10:33Speaker 2: inflation was going up. There were external things that did it.
- 10:37Speaker 2: There was not a ton the president could do about it.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Having that elect that be the signature of you that election,
- 10:44Speaker 2: and now turning around and watching all this play out
- 10:47Speaker 2: and how you feel about it.
- 10:51Speaker 9: Yeah, you know, it is extremely heartbreaking to watch that videos.
- 10:54Speaker 9: Who hear the pain in those people's voices. I have
- 10:57Speaker 9: family members who actually help with people who are on
- 11:01Speaker 9: house who are losing their jobs, they actually need food assistance,
- 11:05Speaker 9: and it.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Is very real.
- 11:06Speaker 9: And I remember during the Biden administration, there were a
- 11:10Speaker 9: lot of conversations on democratic circles and that we actually
- 11:14Speaker 9: have to do a better job of communicating how these
- 11:17Speaker 9: policies would actually take a little bit of time, right,
- 11:20Speaker 9: Like President Biden passed some very strong, you know, economic bills,
- 11:26Speaker 9: but it would take a long time for people to
- 11:28Speaker 9: actually feel that. So how do you communicate this while
- 11:31Speaker 9: also really talking about the dangers of the incoming Trump administration.
- 11:37Speaker 9: I think one of the things that we are learning
- 11:39Speaker 9: is that folks who would support us, whether Democrats or
- 11:43Speaker 9: people who are tired of Trump, are actually tired of
- 11:46Speaker 9: folks talking about who Trump is and what the Democrats
- 11:49Speaker 9: are for. We have actually not had a great message
- 11:52Speaker 9: until now, when the affordability conversation has actually been the
- 11:55Speaker 9: thing that has like poked through because of the big,
- 11:58Speaker 9: ugly bill that unfortunately past. But I think a lot
- 12:01Speaker 9: of folks are feeling some a little bit of remorse
- 12:04Speaker 9: and honestly thinking what could we have done different to
- 12:08Speaker 9: communicate to the American people what this could be and
- 12:10Speaker 9: what this would feel like.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Yeah,
