- 0:39Hi, it's Adam here. And on today's episode of The
- 0:43Hypnotist again, it won't be me being your hypnotist.
- 0:46We have a guest hypnotist. I'm very fortunate to be joined
- 0:50by Turin Mirza. Welcome to the show, Turin.
- 0:53Good morning. Welcome.
- 0:54Welcome. Glad to be here.
- 0:56Great to have you here. So one of the things I found
- 0:58fascinating meeting so many different hypnotherapists is
- 1:02that there's very different reasons why people get into this
- 1:06world of hypnosis and and hypnotherapy.
- 1:09So tell us a little bit about you, your background, and how
- 1:12you gravitated to this world we call hypnosis.
- 1:15Indeed, indeed, we're all started when I was born.
- 1:18I won't go that far back. What I was for 27 years, I was a
- 1:23software engineer. I became a software manager and
- 1:26a director of engineering for a major technology company working
- 1:32from telecoms into the oil and gas sector.
- 1:34And in parallel to that, along that way, by 2010, well probably
- 1:41before 2010, I would, I used to do what I call silly dad magic
- 1:45for my kids. You know, the usual, oh, where'd
- 1:47that come from behind your ear? Nothing that I would probably no
- 1:52sort of magic tricks I would do in front of other people.
- 1:54Just just I'll say the phrase inflected on the children and I
- 1:58saw it was actually Darren Bryan an episode, Darren Brown, a
- 2:03couple of shows, Darren Brown. And I thought, well, I could do
- 2:05that on the kids. Now, at the time, I thought it
- 2:08was a magic trick, and so I started just Googling them.
- 2:13We're talking 2010, when when the Internet, if you were even
- 2:17born, Adam, the Internet was in its infancy and took me a time
- 2:22to figure out that this is actually a thing called
- 2:25hypnosis. And like most people, I don't
- 2:29know if the most people include your audience, but like most
- 2:31people, you know what this doesn't really, it's just
- 2:34compliance. It's just playing along.
- 2:36This stuff isn't real. So I read up on it and read up
- 2:40on it. And I said to myself, you know,
- 2:42something's missing here. You know what?
- 2:44What's the trick? You know, they tell me on these
- 2:46books how to do it, but it can't be that easy.
- 2:48There must be something I'm missing.
- 2:50So I went on a an inductions training course with a lovely
- 2:55guy called James Tripp. And during that time, I say the
- 3:01phrase I learned everything, but I learned nothing and no and
- 3:04went no way and insulted James. James was a brilliant trainer.
- 3:07But I realized, I mean, I did learn a lot of things with that.
- 3:11They just coining a phrase there.
- 3:13But I learnt I did know how to do this stuff.
- 3:18And obviously we practiced during the training course and
- 3:20on the IT was in, he was in England at the time.
- 3:24I think he's now in Edinburgh in Scotland.
- 3:27But so I was flying home from Stansted back to Belfast, and I
- 3:33hypnotized my first person at the airport in the Dixon's
- 3:38travel shop. And from there, that's where
- 3:42that's where life changed. I started off just going out in
- 3:46the streets of Belfast and hypnotizing people again, just
- 3:49as a curiosity, just as a hobby to understand how this works and
- 3:52to really get to grips with it. And I learned so much from that
- 3:56street hypnosis experience. And then people sort of came up
- 4:00to me and said, here, you've just made him forget his name.
- 4:04You know, I just stick people's feet to the floor, make give
- 4:07them a name, amnesia that couldn't say their name.
- 4:09Somebody came up and said, you, you may not forget his name.
- 4:11Can you make me forget I smoke. And at that time, you know, I
- 4:16focused on just getting people into hypnosis.
- 4:19I hadn't overly studying the therapeutic side of things, but
- 4:22I thought, well, I can make people forget their names.
- 4:24We've been doing it for months. And you know, by that time,
- 4:28probably done 20-30, maybe 100 people.
- 4:31I know I lost kind of that stage and I give it a go and the guy
- 4:36stopped and the rest again I say is his history.
- 4:41From there I just. Tell us about that first, that
- 4:45first time in Dixon's because I think, you know, I've I've done
- 4:48some St. hypnosis and and it is a daunting thing when you've
- 4:53never done it before to go up to a stranger.
- 4:56And you know, because a lot of it is is based on the premise
- 5:00and is based on the intent and the congruency and all those
- 5:02kind of things. So tell us about that, that very
- 5:05first experience. I, I, I know you said it's, it's
- 5:07a daunting thing, but I think maybe, maybe it was because the
- 5:10timing was right. I've just come from two days
- 5:15training and practicing. I mean, say the first time
- 5:20hepatitizing someone outside of the classroom, practiced various
- 5:23things in the classroom. I had a hire car, drove back to
- 5:27the airport, parked the car came in and I went into as again,
- 5:31it'll be sexist taste, probably a sexist thing to say.
- 5:33Us men going in and looking at the laptops and the cameras and
- 5:36Dixon's travel store and in the airports.
- 5:42I'm sure lots of women do that as well.
- 5:44But anyway, and I was chatting with one of the girls that the
- 5:49sales assistants and it was like 8:00 at night and I thought,
- 5:55God, you know, this place is empty.
- 5:58And as I walked away and walked out of the store, I thought, you
- 6:01know what, I should have hypnotized, you know, I should
- 6:04have practiced because they look bored.
- 6:07So, and, and to be, I mean, you just talk about daunting.
- 6:09I sort of almost said it's not really daunting, but I, you
- 6:11know, I was all fired up and excited with my new toy.
- 6:15And so I said right, I'm going to I'm going to go back in and
- 6:20I've no other customers are in the room.
- 6:24I will hypnotize one of the sales assistant.
- 6:27Now sounds very easy, but I walked around very slowly giving
- 6:32lots of people time to go into Dixons so I wouldn't have to do
- 6:36it. Walked around the whole of the
- 6:37San Jose airport, went back in the Dixons, not a sore, but the
- 6:41girl I've been talking to disappeared and there's two
- 6:43fellas. So again, stereotypical.
- 6:47Walked up to them, standing next to the cameras and building a
- 6:50bit of rapport, said so which one's better?
- 6:52Canon and Econ and stuff and had a bit of a chat about cameras.
- 6:56And then I and I put up the Curry, say I usually bored.
- 7:00And they said, yeah, you know, 8:00 at night and a Sunday
- 7:02night, not a lot of people come in.
- 7:04I said, do you want to see some entertainment?
- 7:07They said, why, what do you do? I said I'm a hypnotist, I can
- 7:11hypnotize you, which outside of the classroom technically wasn't
- 7:15true because I've never hypnotized anybody before.
- 7:19And in good macho style, they said, oh, do her over there.
- 7:23And the girl that I'd been speaking to before appeared, I
- 7:27don't know where she was, in the staff room or something.
- 7:29She just caught in my eye. And then they shouted across, he
- 7:35wants to hypnotize you. And she says, yeah, OK, I'll
- 7:38have a go. So I did a simple hand stick.
- 7:41I stuck her hand to the table. And then I took her hand and put
- 7:44it on her head. And she couldn't move her hand
- 7:46from her head and well, the rest is history.
- 7:50Now, I will say I remember her name only because her name's the
- 7:52same name as my daughter. Her name was Zara and my
- 7:56daughter's name is Zara. So that that was that's the
- 8:01moment. Obviously, if that had of went
- 8:04terribly wrong, I probably would have never hypnotized anybody
- 8:06again and still be writing software and managing software
- 8:09engineers and stuff. But that, that was the catalyst
- 8:13that all changed that. Day.
- 8:14Yeah, and I think it's a, you know, in in the magic world,
- 8:19they say, you know, you can't really talk about like the
- 8:21tricks and the secrets. You know, there's that kind of a
- 8:24code. I think it is worth exploring
- 8:28one thing that I find fascinating, and that is this
- 8:31kind of, I look at it as two circles of a Venn diagram.
- 8:34There's this kind of real hypnotic phenomenon.
- 8:37And then there's things that aren't necessarily hypnosis, but
- 8:41can be great convinces of something that they can't
- 8:45explain, which then can facilitate some of the other
- 8:49forms of hypnosis. So when we look at things like
- 8:52magnetic fingers or arm levitation and, and, and things
- 8:55like that, not all of it is the hypnotic suggestion.
- 8:58Some of it is the mechanics of the body position and, and other
- 9:02things. Do you, do you have certain
- 9:05things when you're doing St. Hypnosis to give you an easy
- 9:08win, to give you a convincer, let's say for the for the person
- 9:13you're working with. Well, I, I can't, I'm a great
- 9:16believer in hypnosis itself. So I will do the magnetic
- 9:24fingers, but I'll, I'll reserve it.
- 9:28Put it this way, you know, one of the great things I've learned
- 9:32from, you know, St. Hypnosis is, is the failures,
- 9:37you know, and, and the one, the reason I, I, I speak a lot about
- 9:41St. hypnosis and advocate that hypnotherapists should learn St.
- 9:45hypnosis is because in, in a therapy room, you're going to go
- 9:50slow, you're going to go structured, stay safe.
- 9:52Maybe read a script to make sure you get it right, but you're
- 9:56losing out in a lot of spontaneity, you know, So if I,
- 10:02if I do an induction and it doesn't work and I do another
- 10:05induction that doesn't work, then I'll do genetic fingers
- 10:07because I know, as you say, that's not necessarily
- 10:11completely hypnotic, but very much on, on the tendons and
- 10:14whatever else. And, and if the fingers stay
- 10:17apart after about 5 minutes, probably exaggerating there, you
- 10:20know, I know why the other 10 inductions didn't work.
- 10:22It wasn't me doing something wrong.
- 10:25It was they, they were worried and they were resistive there
- 10:27because the fingers will come together, you know.
- 10:31So I'll never go for the easy one.
- 10:33I'll use that as the check to see why the other things didn't
- 10:37work. Yeah.
- 10:38So I'll maybe do a hand to face induction or, you know, magnetic
- 10:41hands coming together type induction.
- 10:45And if that doesn't work, I'll say right now put your fingers
- 10:47up like this here and, and, and clasp and you'll see the fingers
- 10:51nice and tight together. So, you know, the tendons are
- 10:53straining. And if the fingers stay apart,
- 10:55all right, they don't want this. Yeah.
- 10:59And you don't want you don't want to have that in the therapy
- 11:01room, but but your understanding that helps me understand people
- 11:05and help me understand hypnosis. So I don't know if that answers
- 11:09the question, but. No, it does, but it's not as a
- 11:11primary. Yeah.
- 11:12I think also sometimes information is coming back all
- 11:16the time. So if they are very resistant,
- 11:20then there might be that polarity response and they're
- 11:22getting their significance from being the one that can't be
- 11:25hypnotized. And I remember you used to do,
- 11:28you know, it really kind of resonated with me when you said
- 11:31that, you know, you called yourself a hypnotist when you
- 11:35hadn't hypnotized anyone at that point.
- 11:37And a few years ago, I, I volunteered to be a hypnotist
- 11:41for a spider phobia workshop. And the premise was I would come
- 11:46in, hypnotize a room full of people and they'd be holding
- 11:49tarantulas afterwards. But I'd never done that before.
- 11:52I'd never worked with a single phobia client, but I just had
- 11:55this kind of deep conviction. It wasn't daunting for me at
- 11:58all. It was just kind of like, I can
- 12:00do this, it won't be a problem. And, and I did the, the, the
- 12:04session and they were all holding tarantulas and holding
- 12:05spiders at the end. And I thought, wow, I can do
- 12:08this. It was kind of like a, a
- 12:09convincer for me more than than anyone else.
- 12:12But when I was doing these kind of group hypnosis sessions,
- 12:16there was this thing that I found really useful and I would
- 12:18do the, the kind of the book and balloon kind of deepener and,
- 12:22and that kind of stuff. But I, I had this phrase because
- 12:26at the end they would, they would kind of look at their
- 12:28hands and some people would be like really wide apart and some
- 12:31people would be quite close together.
- 12:33And then I had this, I had this line, which was, and the key
- 12:36thing is that hypnosis is suggestion.
- 12:39So the key thing isn't how much your arms are moved apart, is
- 12:43the fact that they're up there to begin with.
- 12:45And that, that was kind of like a real kind of twist for them
- 12:48because they were like, yeah, I followed that suggestion, you
- 12:52know, completely. And my, my hands were, you know,
- 12:54kind of there, how far apart was almost kind of insignificant.
- 12:58But it was always good when they saw that kind of massive
- 13:00difference in, in style. So we're, we're both at the
- 13:05Irish Hypnotherapy Conference in, in Dublin in April and
- 13:10you're going to be talking about St.
- 13:12Hypnosis and in particular how St.
- 13:14Hypnosis can help hypnotherapists.
- 13:18I get a sense that confidence is one of those things that is
- 13:20going to give hypnotherapist. What are the other benefits of
- 13:23hypnotherapist learning some of the the street techniques?
- 13:27It's about confidence. It's about knowing your intent.
- 13:32When I talk to a lot of therapists or even, you know,
- 13:35lay people don't know anything about hypnosis and they say, oh,
- 13:37you know, will it work? You know, you've got to believe.
- 13:41I mean, it's probably linked to confidence in a way, but it's #1
- 13:45having that confidence know this stuff works.
- 13:48Usually use another S word for that.
- 13:50The stuff works. I'll say it today, but and and
- 13:54and also once, once you know, it works, just facing someone
- 13:59saying I'm going to hypnotize you today and having that intent
- 14:02and that unquestionable intent, you know, and you know, as you
- 14:09heard from from my passion about how I learned and just going out
- 14:12in the streets. I went out in the streets of
- 14:13Belfast here. I went to my my first
- 14:16convention. This is why I think the the
- 14:19Irish 1 is so such a beautiful one.
- 14:22Back in 2015 was my first hypnosis convention in Las Vegas
- 14:27hit my thoughts live and you also went out in the streets of
- 14:31Las Vegas and hypnotized. There have been streets of
- 14:34London, streets of Edinburgh, whatever, hypnotizing people
- 14:37and, and I gained so much from street hypnosis.
- 14:44And as my journey describes, you know, I did that before I went
- 14:48to the therapy that I use a lot of the tools and use a lot of
- 14:52techniques. As you talk about calibration
- 14:54constantly, you know, giving, you know, compliance
- 14:57instructions, you know, you know, sit there can just put
- 14:59your feet flat on the floor. People don't have to have their
- 15:02feet flat on the floor to be hypnotized.
- 15:03But it's just looking for that compliance and calibrating
- 15:06completely. So it's feeding all that
- 15:09information across and showing the parallelisms because and we
- 15:15were chatting just a few seconds before the, the the mic went
- 15:17live about, you know, traditionally some trainers are
- 15:24not black and everyone by by this, some trainers will say,
- 15:27you know, well, you don't want to do that entertainment stuff.
- 15:29It will Clyde the professional hypnotherapy.
- 15:32We're working with depressions and anxieties, post traumatic
- 15:35traumas. You know, we don't want to do
- 15:37that entertainment stuff. I find it's helped me so much.
- 15:42I know, you know, liver training on St. hypnosis type of
- 15:45therapists and they gain so much more insights into their therapy
- 15:50work. It's not about training them to
- 15:52do to go out and do every week and start charging for street
- 15:55hypnosis. It's about, you know, the the
- 15:59nuances and the skills you gain from doing St. hypnosis that
- 16:04will help your therapeutic practice.
- 16:06So rather than saying oh distance yourself from it, you
- 16:09should be. Connecting with it, yeah.
- 16:10And I think it's probably worth just because there's a lot of
- 16:13people that listen that love hypnosis but don't necessarily
- 16:17never been taught hypnotherapy or hypnosis and those kind of
- 16:20things. So it might be worth defining
- 16:24the difference between stage hypnother, stage hypnosis.
- 16:28Most people get that hypnotherapy is for therapeutic
- 16:31change, stage hypnosis and St. hypnosis though there might be a
- 16:35distinction. They're useful for the the
- 16:36listeners at this point. To to be honest, there's,
- 16:40there's very little difference, which again surprises people.
- 16:44So stage hypnosis is what I would say is be pre planned,
- 16:50premeditated. That sounds like you're going to
- 16:52murder somebody, right? Pre planned.
- 16:53OK, so I, I will put up a poster saying I'm in the town hall in
- 16:58two weeks time and people start buying tickets and say, oh, I'm
- 17:01going to hypnotist in two weeks time.
- 17:03Oh, and next week is the hypnotist.
- 17:05Oh, tomorrow night I'm going to the hypnotist.
- 17:07And during that process they're already hypnotizing themselves.
- 17:11They're saying, oh, I think I'll go up the stage.
- 17:12No, I think I'll just watch, you know, but my husband's going to
- 17:15go up the stage and my wife's going to go up on the stage.
- 17:17There'll be all this pre talk on their own minds building up to
- 17:22it. So it's all pre plan and again,
- 17:26they'll generally be a large audience, umm and and several
- 17:31people coming up on stage, maybe 6, maybe 12 people depending on
- 17:34the audience size and the and the stage size and whatever.
- 17:37St. Hypnosis on the other hand is
- 17:40you probably are heading on your way to Belfast, to Dublin, to
- 17:44Manchester, wherever you are, you live, you know, no intent.
- 17:47You need to get something from Marks and Spencer's or just
- 17:49going out for a bit of window shopping for the day.
- 17:51No thought of being hypnotized. Didn't realize there was going
- 17:54to be a hypnotist wandering around the streets and somebody
- 17:57bumps in and you say have you got 5 minutes?
- 17:59I'd just love to show you something wonderful about your
- 18:00mind. I'm doing some entertainment
- 18:02today and you go, what is it? Oh, I'm a hypnotist.
- 18:05Oh, OK, give it a go. So it's very impromptu.
- 18:10The audience generally is one other person that the person you
- 18:14were were walking with your wife, your husband, your, your,
- 18:17your, your friends, whatever wandering around the town.
- 18:23So it, it's, it's a lot more personal, it's a lot more
- 18:27impromptu. And it, it has, it has 2 two
- 18:32sides to it #1 if you're doing a stage show and things just don't
- 18:37go too well, you know, you, you've, you've disappointed a
- 18:41whole audience that's been waiting two weeks to see it.
- 18:44If I, if I hypnotize someone out in the streets and they weren't
- 18:46expecting to see me, if it doesn't go right, well, one
- 18:48audience member got, gets disappointed, maybe the subject
- 18:51themselves get disappointed and, and that's it.
- 18:55It's over. So everybody always says to me,
- 18:58you know, oh, street house is very hard because bang, there's
- 19:01no pre talk in their mind. 2 two minutes ago they were walking
- 19:05along. Next minute they're being
- 19:06hypnotized. That takes a lot of, you know,
- 19:09power, but lots of lot of skill to do that.
- 19:14Again, if you have that confidence, if you have that
- 19:16intent, it will work. But hypnosis isn't like the
- 19:20movies, as we always say. It's you're, we're not taking
- 19:22control of somebody's mind. We're not making them do
- 19:24something they don't want to do. If they might say, yeah, I'll
- 19:27have a go. But they sort of have their nose
- 19:29scrunched up, you know, I'll have a go.
- 19:31And again, we're calibrating. We're reading their facial
- 19:34expression, reading how their shoulders are hunched.
- 19:36And you're saying, well, I don't think this guy really wants it,
- 19:40but I'm prepared to to give it a go because I have that intent
- 19:44and have that confidence. And sometimes it won't work, not
- 19:47because I'm a bad hit, but just not because he's a bad subject
- 19:49or she's a bad subject. It's just the moment wasn't
- 19:52right, the rapport wasn't there. And I've got a beautiful video.
- 19:55I've got a, a YouTube channel. There's about 730 videos, 1.4
- 19:59million views on YouTube. But the one I I love most, I
- 20:04love them all like but I walked up to a guy.
- 20:08This was at a. Queen's University in Belfast
- 20:12has a like a Comic Con type event.
- 20:14It's a anime costume event. So that the if you watch the
- 20:18video, they're all dressed up. One guy's dressed up as a
- 20:20stormtrooper and I try to hypnotize him and his girlfriend
- 20:26and it bombs. They don't get there's, there's
- 20:31the the girl sort of goes into hypnosis, but she pops out very
- 20:33quickly before he could do any skits and they walk away.
- 20:38And if that's the only bit of the video you see, you'll think,
- 20:41oh, he's a rubbish hypnotist. They are all and or he and the
- 20:45the boy and girl are, are terrible subjects.
- 20:47But then 42 minutes and I know it's 42 minutes because I, I
- 20:52constantly audio record, but only video record when somebody
- 20:55gives me permission to come on camera.
- 20:57So the audio was 42 minutes later, he comes up to me again
- 21:00and says I want to give it another go.
- 21:02And I hypnotize him. I stick his feet to the floor
- 21:04and make him forget his name. He's a perfect subject and I
- 21:08love that video because it shows that hey, I was a great
- 21:12hepatist, but it but it failed the first time because the magic
- 21:17wasn't there. The the moment wasn't there.
- 21:21Maybe he thought I was going to pickpocket his his wallet.
- 21:24Maybe he thought I was making going to clock like a chicken
- 21:26and do something silly. But then he'd watched me do the
- 21:29other people. So he thought, oh, I like what
- 21:31he's doing there. I do want to have a go.
- 21:33So when he came up that that the moment was different, it was the
- 21:37same hypnotist 42 minutes apart, Harley, not even an hour, same
- 21:41same subject, but the hypnosis was totally different.
- 21:45And that's very empowering, you know, So I don't mind things
- 21:49going wrong. And that rarely happens.
- 21:51If somebody comes back, if something bombs like that there,
- 21:53they don't come back. And you think go home, terrible
- 21:56hypnotist. But it's, it's, it's having that
- 21:58confidence to know that bond, but you know, something wasn't
- 22:01right. Yeah, I, I think that's a really
- 22:04important thing because a lot of the time people are afraid to
- 22:08try something in case they fail. And and then even if they did it
- 22:13because they've got that fear, it's tentative, they're not
- 22:16being concruent. The the intention lacks that
- 22:19kind of, you know, kind of you're not projecting that
- 22:23confidence to the, the, the participant.
- 22:25But, but I've always had this thought.
- 22:27Not always actually. I used to be terrified of, of
- 22:31taking risks and doing new things.
- 22:32But now these days, I have this belief that in when you try
- 22:36things, you either win or you learn, It either goes the way
- 22:38you want it to go, where you're going to get some form of
- 22:42insight back. Even if what you learn is
- 22:45doesn't happen all the time, doesn't need to, you know,
- 22:48you're still getting something, something back to run.
- 22:51How important is it when you do St. hypnosis that you
- 22:55communicate? I'm a hypnotist.
- 22:57I'm going to hypnotize you. And does it work if you don't
- 23:00have that? Because in a in a way that's a
- 23:02really condensed pre talk, in a in a way it sets up an
- 23:05expectation. Yes, you know that there's a
- 23:09large part of my YouTube channel over the years.
- 23:11So in the early days it was just uploaded videos.
- 23:14Nowadays what I will do is upload maybe a 4 minute clip and
- 23:18then I'll talk about what happened in that clip.
- 23:20So it's like a tutorial. And again, like I say, I, I, I,
- 23:26I have a mic and it's constantly recording and just in terms of
- 23:31saving battery space and, and, and memory card space on the
- 23:34camera, I only record when somebody says, yes, I'm happy
- 23:36enough to be videoed nowadays on the videos, I will play the
- 23:41audio with a still, you know, frame to listen to my walk up so
- 23:47that people understand how many, how many minutes, how many
- 23:50hours. You know people say, ah, but
- 23:51they you hypnotized them before the camera was turned on.
- 23:55You will hear me walk up to someone and within 30 seconds,
- 23:5836 seconds, something like that there, I'll say hi.
- 24:00I'm doing some straight hypnosis today.
- 24:01Would you like to be you're hypnotized?
- 24:03Yes. OK.
- 24:04Do you mind every video? Yes.
- 24:05And the camera goes on and I'm straight into an induction.
- 24:09No other pre talk. Now I'm there with a camera
- 24:12person, right. It's not a big broadcast camera.
- 24:17It's just a little camcorder. But I can get a camcorder on
- 24:19somebody standing there with a mobile phone.
- 24:23They've they've got a a monopod. So it looks, you know, a piece
- 24:27of technical equipment I have AT shirt that says hypnotist in the
- 24:30back, which they don't always see in the back of me because
- 24:32I'm walking up to them. But it says feel good hypnosis,
- 24:34which is my trading name, my branding name.
- 24:38So I'm there and I'm confident. Hi, I'm here to do some
- 24:41entertainment. Would you like to be hypnotized
- 24:43today? And I'm saying that knowing I'm
- 24:46going about to hypnotize you, that's my intent inside me.
- 24:49If they say, oh, sorry, no. And a lot of people do.
- 24:52And again, that's part of, I think the learning process for
- 24:55hypotherapists is getting that rejection.
- 24:58But it's not rejection. Some people just don't want to
- 25:00be hypnotized. Or maybe if it's in a, you know,
- 25:02in a, in a busy St. somebody snapped out for lunch to grab
- 25:06some sandwiches, get back to work in half an hour.
- 25:08They don't have time. So you ask people and they say,
- 25:11sorry, no, but you just don't, you know, you look down at the
- 25:14ground to see if that hole opens up and swallows you and it
- 25:16doesn't. And when that hole doesn't
- 25:19appear, you, you get that confidence in itself to just ask
- 25:22somebody else. Oh, well, you know, it's not a
- 25:24failure. Sometimes, as they say, you'll
- 25:26do an induction and it just doesn't, you know, click again,
- 25:31that hole doesn't appear. And that builds that confidence
- 25:34that when you do hypnotize people, you just go.
- 25:38And the, the first one, I mean, that stormtrooper was probably
- 25:40the first one of the day. So he hadn't seen me do anybody
- 25:42else. After a while, as he did, other
- 25:45people will come up. I mean, I, I did a, a Christmas
- 25:51solopreneurs lunch last week, whereas lots of entrepreneurs,
- 25:57solopreneurs, you know, got together for lunch and as you
- 26:01do, did some hypnosis at the party.
- 26:04And I'm doing another lunch next week.
- 26:08And somebody in a comment on LinkedIn said, oh, you're going
- 26:10to be doing some hypnosis then. I would love to see it.
- 26:13So already giving any requests to do more impromptu hypnosis at
- 26:19that event. So let's see how it goes.
- 26:22I'm confident to do it. Yeah, amazing.
- 26:25Same with networking situations. Again, in terms of the
- 26:27hypnotherapy, it's not just for the hypnotherapy side of it, but
- 26:30as hypnotherapists, one of the things that I recommend helped
- 26:34me, well, my business with networking, you know, and again,
- 26:40being able to stand up and say, right, I'm going to do a demo
- 26:42here. Best way to understand how
- 26:44hypnosis works is the demo can have a lot of subject and have
- 26:47somebody come up the front and just hypnotize them.
- 26:49And again, you can't spend 20 minutes doing a progressive
- 26:52muscle relaxation. You'll bore the audience.
- 26:54So you have to do something quick as you do in St.
- 26:56Hypnosis. And when people say, wow, that
- 27:01really works, then you get the referrals.
- 27:06So it's part of the hypnotherapy business, maybe not directly
- 27:10related to in the session, but St.
- 27:12Hypnosis and having that confidence in a room of 20
- 27:15people to say, right, do you want to see a demo?
- 27:19You know, where there was one time where where was, you know,
- 27:22standing up doing my 62nd pitch and people were in throgs.
- 27:25They never met a hypnotist before.
- 27:27And somebody just says, can you hypnotize me now?
- 27:29And I said yeah. And they went, oh, no, thanks.
- 27:34But they'd already felt that confidence to me.
- 27:37Yeah. Do you want to do it now?
- 27:38Let's do it now. And and, you know, I believe
- 27:40that was felt in the room. I was there.
- 27:42I was ready to do it now. They backed down.
- 27:44No, no, just asking. Yeah, they said they were
- 27:48chicken around. They just didn't expect that
- 27:51answer, you know, because a lot of hypnotherapists will say, can
- 27:54you advertise me now at a party or the networking event?
- 27:57Well, probably now he's not the right place.
- 27:59But if you want to come next Wednesday, but 2:00, you come
- 28:02around and give you a little mini session, a little taster.
- 28:06The moment's lost in my mind anyway, saying yes, let's do it,
- 28:10and then having other people see it and they go, wow.
- 28:14And what is an ideal thing to do in that kind of situation?
- 28:18Let's say a hypnotherapist listening, they've not done much
- 28:21stage or or street hypnosis or rapid inductions before.
- 28:24What's a great thing to do that may be fairly easy to learn if
- 28:29you have got that conviction, that confidence?
- 28:31What's a good thing to do as a as a demo?
- 28:34Well, yeah, I'm going to lead into that with another story
- 28:37because I taught my son how to do it and, and I did that, umm,
- 28:43leading into another story now, but a bit of Ericssonian stuff
- 28:46here. Umm, so shortly after I'd learnt
- 28:51umm, and this was, you know, on Christmas Day.
- 28:54No, I, my, my sister-in-law was around for Christmas dinner.
- 28:59And my sister-in-law is probably shouldn't be saying this on a
- 29:01podcast for eternity, but umm, my sister in And I don't know if
- 29:08you know any twins, but, umm, my, my sister-in-law, you know,
- 29:14would would say anything to contradict me if I said, oh,
- 29:18it's looking quite dark right there.
- 29:19No, it's light. You know, it's getting a bit
- 29:22cold out. No, it's warm enough.
- 29:24You know, she would never say anything to please me.
- 29:28And so I hypnotized her on Christmas Day.
- 29:32And my son, you know, up until then had thought this people are
- 29:37just playing along with you that that that this is not real
- 29:39hypnosis, you know, they're just being compliant and being nice
- 29:43to you. But he knew Catherine wouldn't
- 29:46do anything just to be nice. So, so when I hypnotized her and
- 29:50she couldn't speak and I hypnotized her to forget the
- 29:53number seven, he went, this stuff is real.
- 29:59So he came out with me. And when I talked about camera
- 30:03patient, a lot of times he'll come out, he'll hypnotize
- 30:05someone and I'll video him and then vice versa.
- 30:08He'll be my camera person. He was actually the one that
- 30:11started the YouTube channel. And so I said to him, you know,
- 30:18I've got to stop sticking people's feet to the floor, you
- 30:20know, because I'm doing that for everyone.
- 30:24And it was him, beautifully said.
- 30:27But this new, the next person that comes along has never had
- 30:29their feet stuck to the floor. So it's new to them.
- 30:33And great insight is this is where I don't, I don't know if
- 30:36you have any kids. There's great insights when you
- 30:39Start learning from your children and they give you words
- 30:41of wisdom. But I realized, you know, you
- 30:44know, don't you don't have to think of 101 different skits to
- 30:48do if you stick people's feet to the floor, that's mind blowing
- 30:52for them. But he also said to me, you
- 30:56know, you know people, you know, because he's sitting watching
- 30:59behind the lens and watching the reactions where I'm focusing on
- 31:02the subject, not seeing the audience, not seeing the the
- 31:04passage by they're stopping and watching.
- 31:06He says just doing a hypnotic induction, dropping them in the
- 31:11hypnosis so the head drops under the chest and then waking them
- 31:14up again and send them on the way.
- 31:15If you do, no feet stick, If you do no skits at all.
- 31:19That's mind blown to that to people that aren't familiar with
- 31:22hypnosis. And again, that's one of the
- 31:25things I teach, you know, don't think I have to do this skit,
- 31:28then that skit, then that skit. And do you know, I'll do maybe 5
- 31:31or 6 skits in the subjects really good.
- 31:34I'll go for 20 minutes. Yeah, don't don't you know, once
- 31:38get after another because I'm used to it, but just just to
- 31:44hypnotize someone drop them in maybe do a fractionalization 123
- 31:48wide awake and stay asleep and they just drop down again.
- 31:50You can see that change in their, their, their complexion,
- 31:54that their, their, their face. And and then, you know, from
- 31:581:00 to 5:00 and on the kind of five, you'd be awake, fully
- 32:00awake, all hypnosis be gone 123 wide awake.
- 32:04And that that blows people's minds.
- 32:07And I learned that, you know, from my son, thankfully, but for
- 32:11doing the street hypnosis, you know, and I don't think I'd
- 32:15you'd ever get that understanding high mind blowing.
- 32:19Just a fast induction is from, you know, sitting in the therapy
- 32:24room seeing clients for an hour and then the next one coming in
- 32:27with St. hypnosis. I'll hypnotize someone as I say,
- 32:30maybe 10, maybe 1520 if they're a really good subject.
- 32:33So every 10 minutes and then they walk in the way it's do me
- 32:35next and you're straight into doing, you don't have time to
- 32:38think. So maybe in an hour you'll do
- 32:405-6 people back-to-back to back. And that's really when you're
- 32:46learning at an unconscious level yourself about hypnosis where
- 32:49you're not having time to think about it.
- 32:51For most hypnotherapists, when you start out, you'll you'll see
- 32:53maybe one person the first month, maybe two people the
- 32:57second month and then it starts to build up.
- 32:59So you're having a month between when you hypnotize people?
- 33:04To me, it's not the way to learn.
- 33:05Now you've got to learn through immersion.
- 33:07And I think, you know, my philosophy is that you, you
- 33:11learn before you earn. And, and in the early days being
- 33:14hypnotist, I, I kept myself so, so busy because not to make
- 33:19money. I wasn't making any profit at
- 33:20that particular point. But you get better the more you
- 33:22do something. I always believe that you can't
- 33:25learn to swim by reading a book. You've got to, you've got to
- 33:27dive into the pool. And I think hypnosis is
- 33:30particularly like that you're going to do some kind of demo
- 33:34session for us. But before we do that, you've
- 33:37mentioned your YouTube channel, you've mentioned your brand.
- 33:40If people are curious to learn more about you, see your staff
- 33:43learn from you. Where can they go For more
- 33:46information? So it's feel good hypnosis is
- 33:48the if you just Google that I'm on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook,
- 33:53YouTube that works feel good hypnosis is the fast way just to
- 33:56search you'll find me. My website is feel hyphen good
- 34:00dot today and everybody says is that a com or.co.uk?
- 34:03No, it's just a dot today. So feel hyphen good F EE L-G OOD
- 34:09dot today. That's where you can find more
- 34:12website. And again, there's links to all
- 34:13my social media platforms from there.
- 34:15So love people to to check out my my my videos.
- 34:19Make sure to give me a like and a subscribe.
- 34:21It's the same guy. Definitely check to run out
- 34:25there and we're both going to be talking at the Irish
- 34:28Hypnotherapy Conference in Dublin early April.
- 34:32So if you're interested in seeing Turin there, it's Irish
- 34:36Hypnotherapy conference dot IE and there's some good rates
- 34:39available on tickets right now. But Turin, you're going to be
- 34:43doing something for us. So I'm happy to put myself on
- 34:47mute and leave it over to you. But if you want to interact in
- 34:50any way, I'll I'll I won't mute. Myself, I want to do something
- 34:53quite audible and and a nice technique.
- 34:56I do a lot with a lot of my clients is around self talk and
- 35:01I don't know if you have any sort of self talk yourself and
- 35:05things going through your head. Would you?
- 35:09If you do and if you don't mind sharing, it'll help me describe
- 35:16the process. And the lovely thing about this
- 35:18process is I explain, I run through the process with my
- 35:22clients, I explain why it's working, and then I encourage
- 35:26them to take it and share it with their family, their friends
- 35:29or whatever. If anyone helps.
- 35:31So I don't know, do you want me to do an abstract example or do?
- 35:36You well, I'm thinking like generally my inner dialogue is
- 35:39pretty good. It's quite, quite motivating,
- 35:42quite, you know, encouraging. But I would say when I do get
- 35:46anxious, there is that classic kind of, you know, what if
- 35:51something bad happens and every now and then there'll be that
- 35:55voice that says, right, you won't be able to handle that.
- 35:57You're going to, you're going to embarrass yourself.
- 35:59You're going to make a mess of that, something like that.
- 36:01So that doesn't happen very often.
- 36:03But when it does, I can't. I hear it and I feel it.
- 36:05My gut. Beautiful.
- 36:07So again, I'm listening to everything my client says and as
- 36:11soon as they say the phrase like what if something bad happens?
- 36:14Again, if it was the driving test, I'm never going to pass
- 36:16this test. Something like that there.
- 36:19But let's take the what if something bad happens?
- 36:22So what I asked them to do is I'm going to say a phrase and I
- 36:26might have written that down maybe two or three minutes, the
- 36:30talking away, and then I'll, you know, change, right?
- 36:33So let's do a little exercise. What I'm going to do is I'm
- 36:36going to say a phrase. And as I say this phrase, I
- 36:39don't want you to say anything until I say the word.
- 36:42Repeat. Then I want you to repeat it
- 36:44exactly the way I said it. OK, so let's call What if
- 37:06something bad happens? Repeat.
- 37:35What if something bad happens? Now I want you to think of a
- 37:55situation where that would have ran through your head in the
- 37:59past and think about that situation now and notice what
- 38:04you notice differently. Again, generally when I'm
- 38:09working with client, they would have mentioned the scenario I
- 38:12went to get into the car to do my driving test and I said I'm
- 38:14never going to pass my test. So I would have said think back
- 38:16to that day when you sat in the car.
- 38:18Again, we're we're abbreviated demo here.
- 38:24Can you think of a time? I can't think of a time.
- 38:27And what I like about this is the the gaps in between it.
- 38:31It kind of creates space. It does.
- 38:34It does seem to be shifting some submodalities.
- 38:36It kind of feels further away. It feels kind of not so emotive.
- 38:41Uh, I mean, there's a second part to this.
- 38:43Let let's run through the second part of this.
- 38:45And again, probably bad for purely a podcast, but the second
- 38:48part of it is I say once again, and I might, I might get them to
- 38:52do that second time, spacing it out even more.
- 38:56Uh, and after that I then say, I'm going to do that phrases
- 39:00again. I'm going to do it slightly
- 39:01different once again, say nothing until I say the word,
- 39:05repeat, and then repeat it exactly the way I do it.
- 39:08And I'll do what if something bad happens?
- 39:31Repeat if you can remember. That's that's the challenge.
- 39:38My acting isn't as good as yours.
- 39:40What? If.
- 39:48Something bad happens. I told now again for those just
- 40:01listening, I was making arm gestures.
- 40:05And Adam was repeating those arm gestures.
- 40:07I was making facial movements, I was being animated in short.
- 40:14And again, what I'll do is ask the client now to think back to
- 40:16that time once again. Now you've done that probably by
- 40:20a third tanks, 2 elongated ones and an animated one.
- 40:24And again, think back to that time.
- 40:26Now what we're doing, as you've quickly come to is we're and
- 40:31I'll explain this to them that and again, this is not to knock
- 40:34Cbti know some people get great responses for CDT, but generally
- 40:39CBT will say, you know, don't think you can't drive, pass your
- 40:42driving test. Tell yourself you can pass your
- 40:44driving test. You will pass your driving test.
- 40:47And these are good every day and every way.
- 40:49All these affirmations are good to put into your head, but the
- 40:53problem is this other one. What if something bad happens?
- 40:57It's still in there. No matter what you put up here
- 41:00inside your head, the, the, the original affirmation, the -1 is
- 41:05still in there. So we got to mess with that one.
- 41:09Now, I used to ask people when, when that's going through your
- 41:13head to go through quickly or slowly.
- 41:16But I, I quickly realized everybody runs through it at 90
- 41:19miles an hour. And people will say a number
- 41:22like 100 miles an hour, 1000 miles an hour.
- 41:24You know, I'm never going to pass my test.
- 41:26I'm not going to pass my test. I'm never going to pass the
- 41:27test. They're sitting in the chair, or
- 41:29in your case, I'm guessing I didn't ask you in advance.
- 41:33When that phrase goes through your mind, is it going quickly
- 41:35or slowly? What would you say?
- 41:38It's definitely quickly, I think for anxious thoughts.
- 41:40Yeah. And and and you get this loop,
- 41:42don't you? Because the more anxious you
- 41:43get, the more quarters so you've got the faster your brain works.
- 41:46Is this exactly spiral? So, so you did very well.
- 41:50And again, this is not an ideal scenario because it's this not a
- 41:53clear answer session. But a lot of times when I say
- 41:57I'm spinning up here, what if something, but I slow it down.
- 42:04And again, I'm watching them. Some people will when I say
- 42:08don't say anything until I say the repeat.
- 42:10Do you understand the instructions?
- 42:12They'll say yes and then I'll go what?
- 42:17And they'll go, what? No, no, I didn't say repeat yet
- 42:21because that silence is deafening sometimes.
- 42:25And they feel like, did I get the instructions wrong?
- 42:27Should I speak now? And I'll correct them So it's
- 42:31all part of the process. I love it when I correct them,
- 42:34right? And then I'll, I'll get to the
- 42:37end and I'll say repeat. And I say repeat it just the way
- 42:39I did it. And I'll go, what if something
- 42:41bad happens? They'll say it quickly because
- 42:45it's so ingrained in their mind. They're not repeating what I
- 42:48said. They're repeating what's in
- 42:49their head. And it goes quickly.
- 42:51And I'll say, oh, yo, on a scale of one to 10, how well where
- 42:5510's very good and one's terrible.
- 42:57How well did you do it the way I did?
- 42:59Well, not really well at all because you spaced it out.
- 43:02Oh, so you're listening. There's a bit of there's a bit
- 43:05of and again, I can have this banter, this sort of almost
- 43:09critical sarcasm, but with a with a serious point because of
- 43:15doing the fun stuff from the street hypnosis, even this
- 43:18exercise has its roots in in how I work with people out in the
- 43:23streets. I said, so do it again and
- 43:25they'll go what if something but the gaps will even with
- 43:30yourself, you didn't leave the same level of gap as me and
- 43:32there's probably that tension off.
- 43:34This just doesn't sound right. It's not how I speak, but what
- 43:37we're doing is messing. I'll sometimes use the F word
- 43:40we're messing with the original thought.
- 43:43It's a pattern interrupt, isn't it?
- 43:44Changing that, we're changing the modalities in the
- 43:47second-half, the animation again, when they're doing that,
- 43:51you know, you probably stand there stiff going what if
- 43:53something happens? What if something bad happens?
- 43:55You're stiff, you're, you're motionless and, and you're in
- 43:58your head running that pattern. So now we're anchoring movement
- 44:04and you know, and I'll, I'll do silly faces.
- 44:07What if something bad happens, right?
- 44:14And, and nobody ever goes? This is silly.
- 44:16I'm not doing this. They, they, they, they run along
- 44:19with the exercise and, and it's because it's not silly.
- 44:22What we're doing is anchoring. When I say, think back to the
- 44:24time when you were sitting about to do that driving test and they
- 44:27go, oh, just seem silly now because they're thinking that
- 44:31silly movement inside their head.
- 44:32They've, they've changed the modalities, not just the speed,
- 44:36but the seriousness of the, the, the that phrase.
- 44:40Now you can add in your other, you know, every day and every
- 44:42way. And then yes, I can't pass this
- 44:44driving test. Yeah, I think it's very
- 44:46powerful. And the thought that came up for
- 44:48me when when you're going through that is that that
- 44:51obviously you're, you're shifting the tempo, you know,
- 44:56and, and you've got lots of space in between.
- 44:58It's very difficult to kind of get in these loops when you've
- 45:02got that level of space. But I, I recall a client I was
- 45:04working with in the music industry and they felt a real
- 45:08hesitation to write new music. And the inner dialogue was who
- 45:12am I to be writing music? And, and what I found is that in
- 45:16a different area of their life, if someone said they couldn't do
- 45:20something, that polarity response like your, your
- 45:22sister-in-law would create this kind of like, of course I can do
- 45:26this. So I remember working with that
- 45:28client and it was exactly the same inner dialogue, but with
- 45:31this kind of almost like defiant, inspiring tonality.
- 45:36You know, it's kind of like who, who am I?
- 45:40You know, it was, it was this kind of, and it made it
- 45:43appealing almost to kind of like prove someone wrong.
- 45:47So sometimes you can get the words exactly the same, change
- 45:49the tonality and it creates an entirely different emotion.
- 45:53And, and I guess you get that, you know that from how you
- 45:56introduce yourself as a hypnotist, that if you said I'm
- 46:00a hypnotist, I'm going to hypnotize you, it's not going to
- 46:03work because you're projecting something different.
- 46:06That's it when I ran a class it's funny we're talking about
- 46:09the Irish hypnosis convention and I have to say this is the
- 46:11third year in 2025 for anybody listen to this way in the in the
- 46:15future, because I'm sure this podcast will still be listened
- 46:17to in 2020. Thirty but next year's 2025 is
- 46:21the third year was the first year I'm attending even though
- 46:24I'm just up the road. It's it's been held in Dublin.
- 46:27I'm just an hour and a half away in Northern Ireland.
- 46:32The first year I was actually in England delivering a training.
- 46:36This year, 2024, I actually rang John.
- 46:40I said, John, I want to speak, I want to speak 2024 at your
- 46:43convention. And the first year around it was
- 46:46in May and I got on the Zoom call.
- 46:48John go to tolerate St. hypnosis, a great passion of
- 46:51mine. He says, yeah, yeah, we'll have
- 46:53you, we'll have you. And he says we decided to do it
- 46:56in the apron instead of May this year.
- 46:58I said, well, in the April, he says the 20th.
- 47:01That sounds familiar. Oh yeah, my son's getting
- 47:04married in Spain that day. So I missed it second time
- 47:09around. So third year I'm there not
- 47:11missing it. This year.
- 47:12I'm delighted because again, first time I went to a
- 47:14convention and I gained so much knowledge from conventions.
- 47:18It's one thing to go in a training program, whether it's a
- 47:212 day or A5 day or even a six month program.
- 47:24Listen to the same trainer throughout the time, but going
- 47:27to these conventions and hearing and our discussion here to our
- 47:32discussion here gets you. I like the like the way she
- 47:35spoke. I'm going to do her longer
- 47:37training. Don't like the way he quote.
- 47:39It's not no offense to anyone that people don't like.
- 47:41You know, everybody has different styles, different
- 47:43techniques and and certain ones will resonate with you.
- 47:47So I gained so much from those conventions.
- 47:50I've spoken now for the 5th year at the UK hypnosis convention as
- 47:54the Jew last month. So so to be speaking without
- 48:00having to get an airplane, it's great.
- 48:02It's luxury, luxury and and encourage everyone.
- 48:07You don't need to be a hypotherapist or a hypnotist.
- 48:09If you've just got an interest in it, come along, that interest
- 48:13will grow. Like I mean, look how I did.
- 48:15I had no one sounds terrible sometimes.
- 48:18I sometimes say the phrase, I had no intentions of helping
- 48:21people, but, you know, in the context of hypotherapy, yeah, I
- 48:24just, I was just trying to learn this hobby and understand this
- 48:27hobby. And then people said, oh, can
- 48:30you help me stop smoking? And when that worked, I just
- 48:33thought I I need to use this for more than just the street stuff.
- 48:36But I gained so much for street stuff that's helped me.
- 48:39So it would definitely encourage people to come along to the
- 48:43convention. Absolutely.
- 48:44Yeah, it doesn't. Get better than the Irish, I'll
- 48:46say that much. It, it doesn't, you know, I,
- 48:48I've, I would say it's a very similar kind of fun vibe to kind
- 48:51of hypno thoughts in Vegas, but smaller and, and everyone is so,
- 48:55so friendly there. So if you've been daunted about
- 48:57going to some kind of hypnosis conference, that's a great one
- 49:01to, to go to Irish hypnotherapy conference dot IE, check us out
- 49:05there and hopefully we'll see you in April too.
- 49:08And it's been fantastic having a chat.
- 49:10I appreciate we've, we've been around the same circles for a
- 49:12long time. We've never actually had a chat
- 49:13before. So it's great to actually kind
- 49:15of connect in this way and have a lovely Christmas and and I
- 49:19will see you in in April. See you in April.
