- 1:06Speaker 2: than Sean Porter. So if you don't know Showtime Sean Porter,
- 1:11Speaker 2: he is an awesome fighter, great fighter.
- 1:14Speaker 3: He's his record is thirty.
- 1:15Speaker 2: One four and one. He retired in twenty twenty one,
- 1:18Speaker 2: and he's really popular in the boxing game. And he
- 1:22Speaker 2: was there at the press conference and I got to
- 1:23Speaker 2: interview him, which was awesome. It was it was an

- 2:14Speaker 2: We are at mixed co Podcasts, so let's take it
- 2:17Speaker 2: away and hope you enjoyed this interview with Sean Porter. Okay,
- 2:21Speaker 2: first off, how's retirement been treating you?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Man? I love being retired.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I'm still put in a lot of work all day
- 2:27Speaker 1: every day, just in a different mindset, in a different
- 2:29Speaker 1: set setting now and I still get to be around
- 2:33Speaker 1: the game, which is cool.
- 2:35Speaker 2: So a lot of fighters retire, unretired come back because
- 2:38Speaker 2: they just can't stay out of the ring. Have you
- 2:39Speaker 2: find yourself missing the ring, the boxing life or.
- 2:42Speaker 3: No, I'm not missing it.
- 2:44Speaker 1: I had this conversation just last week and the question was,
- 2:48Speaker 1: what's the advice for anyone who does retire? How do
- 2:51Speaker 1: you stay out of the ring? And I say, you
- 2:53Speaker 1: gotta have a game plan. And you know I had,
- 2:56Speaker 1: I had options, I had plans, had things that I
- 2:58Speaker 1: wanted to do, and they were all put right in.
- 3:01Speaker 3: The line right before I retire.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So you know, Uh, for me, things are looking good
- 3:06Speaker 1: and I don't plan on coming back to the ring.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Okay, So what you connect you to Phoenix? Yah, I
- 3:11Speaker 2: know you're from Ohio, like what you parted up with here.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I know you've been in Central Boxing Gym a few
- 3:16Speaker 2: years ago, like White Phoenix.
- 3:17Speaker 3: Yeah, no, Star Sports Advocates.
- 3:21Speaker 1: The creator of that, the UH proprietor of that is
- 3:24Speaker 1: a great friend of mine, and UH when he we
- 3:29Speaker 1: decided to port on this event, uh, I said, all right.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And being right there in Las Vegas, knowing JT as
- 3:36Speaker 1: long as I have, this was no braining for me.
- 3:38Speaker 1: So I'm excited to get out here and touch the
- 3:41Speaker 1: landscape of boxing, the landscape of combat sports, and you know,
- 3:45Speaker 1: just help move it along a little bit.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Okay, okay, Well, and we'll talk a little bit more
- 3:49Speaker 2: about this event coming up in the gym here. But
- 3:52Speaker 2: first I gotta get your take on the current state
- 3:54Speaker 2: of boxing. Yeah, so you know, I turned forty recently,
- 3:56Speaker 2: so we're similar ages there you go. I gotta say,
- 3:58Speaker 2: coming up, you know this boxing teams not as popular
- 4:00Speaker 2: as when we were growing out.
- 4:02Speaker 3: First of all, do you read with that and them?
- 4:03Speaker 2: So, what's the reason why do you think it's fell out.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Of I agree to that.
- 4:06Speaker 1: I agree boxing is not where it used to be,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and that's what JAT and I have talked about. The
- 4:11Speaker 1: question he asked is Sean, how do we make this
- 4:13Speaker 1: a big event? We got to do something that brings
- 4:16Speaker 1: out the families. Boxing has looked at as the bad
- 4:19Speaker 1: boy sports, bad boy sport of sports. And I think
- 4:25Speaker 1: that when you can show people families, even young kids,
- 4:31Speaker 1: that there's so much more to it than just getting
- 4:34Speaker 1: hit and just hitting with so much more to it
- 4:37Speaker 1: than just getting knocked down and getting back up, the
- 4:41Speaker 1: value that you get from boxing. People don't understand that.
- 4:44Speaker 1: And that's why I'm here. I'm here to try to
- 4:46Speaker 1: extend the value that you get from boxing, and I
- 4:49Speaker 1: try my best to let everyone know you enjoy seeing me,
- 4:52Speaker 1: you enjoy.
- 4:54Speaker 3: Hearing my commentary and all those kinds of things.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm just this is all a big melting pot with
- 4:58Speaker 1: boxing has given me, you know so, I truly think
- 5:01Speaker 1: that that's why boxing has started to really waiver. These
- 5:04Speaker 1: other sports are able to get these kids at a
- 5:06Speaker 1: young age. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, list goes on. Boxing
- 5:11Speaker 1: doesn't get a mass the way that these other sports do. Obviously,
- 5:15Speaker 1: we see where economically financially, where these other sports can
- 5:19Speaker 1: take you, whereas boxing.
- 5:21Speaker 3: To select flu few get to the top.
- 5:24Speaker 1: You know so, I think you gotta start down here,
- 5:26Speaker 1: and that's where I come in.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Okay, when you say start down here, which one with
- 5:31Speaker 2: getting kids actually into boxing, or with new fans or both.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I think getting young kids into boxing is how you
- 5:38Speaker 1: get new fans into boxing.
- 5:39Speaker 3: I don't think.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I don't think anyone in their twenties thirties that never
- 5:44Speaker 1: watch boxing.
- 5:45Speaker 3: You don't just pick it up, right. So the twenty
- 5:47Speaker 3: and thirty year olds who picked it.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Up is because they're connected to someone who has done
- 5:51Speaker 1: it or does it.
- 5:52Speaker 3: You know. So again, I think it starts with the kids.
- 5:56Speaker 1: The kids encouraging mom and dad to go to the gym,
- 6:00Speaker 1: the kids encourage you, mom and dad to turn it on,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and things like that.
- 6:03Speaker 3: I think people just boxing is very misunderstood.
- 6:07Speaker 1: I think, uh, you start from the ground up with
- 6:09Speaker 1: the onions and it moves on from there.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Okay, Now, apart from you being great fighter, always like
- 6:16Speaker 2: it seemed like one of the nicest guy in the sport.
- 6:19Speaker 2: I was really curious when fighters are going at each
- 6:21Speaker 2: other before a match and the press conference thing, I'll
- 6:23Speaker 2: tear you up from limb from limb, I'll destroy you.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Just for fighters that really hate each other, or is
- 6:28Speaker 2: it like ninety nine percent.
- 6:30Speaker 1: It's I would say majority of the time there's no
- 6:33Speaker 1: true animosity between fighters.
- 6:36Speaker 3: It's more so just it's what's called for.
- 6:41Speaker 1: If it gets to a very heated situation, that's when
- 6:45Speaker 1: you can tell that it's real. Most times, it's most
- 6:48Speaker 1: so just poking and jabbing at your guy. Once it
- 6:51Speaker 1: starts to really increase and get become a serious situation,
- 6:55Speaker 1: that's when it's real. Uh So, when guys are on
- 6:58Speaker 1: stage and they're saying things that sound fun and funny,
- 7:02Speaker 1: you can say, Hey, that guy's just promoting the fight.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But if the chance you get someone saying, hey, you know.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I can't wait to do this, I can't wait to
- 7:10Speaker 1: do that. Yeah, that's when it becomes a little more serious.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Are there any young guys that you think as fans
- 7:16Speaker 2: or potential fans should keep an eye out in in
- 7:18Speaker 2: the boxing again?
- 7:18Speaker 3: The next big start.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I'm trying to think off the top of my head.
- 7:22Speaker 1: There's a few out there. Bruce Carrington, Uh, he just
- 7:25Speaker 1: picked up a title. There's a lot of young guys
- 7:29Speaker 1: out there. Our motto Vargas is Fernando Vargas's son. He's
- 7:35Speaker 1: going to be a great talent here in the next
- 7:37Speaker 1: couple of years. Guy from my hometown, Cleveland, Ohio, Mason Abdullah,
- 7:43Speaker 1: excuse me, Abdullah Mason. He's he's amazing talent and I
- 7:49Speaker 1: think he's gonna be on the top for a long time.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Richard Torres, I think we got an amazing heavyweight coming
- 7:56Speaker 1: to the landscape of boxing here really pretty soon. He's
- 7:59Speaker 1: from California. Just a few names out there that people
- 8:02Speaker 1: may not have seen yet. Look these guys up on YouTube.
- 8:06Speaker 1: You become a fan of instantly.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Awesome.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Okay, So tell us about Central Boxing Gym in Arizona
- 8:11Speaker 2: for people that don't know or aren't from Phoenix. Yeah,
- 8:13Speaker 2: what's so special about this place? What is it really
- 8:16Speaker 2: doing that call your attention?
- 8:17Speaker 1: This place is historic, man, This place has a lot
- 8:19Speaker 1: of history here dating back to Mike Tyson. I think
- 8:23Speaker 1: that's the biggest name to come through here. Also, David
- 8:26Speaker 1: Benabidaz has come through here. I haven't trained here yet,
- 8:29Speaker 1: but because I've come here now two or three times,
- 8:32Speaker 1: people say, hey, this is this is Sean's home when
- 8:34Speaker 1: he comes to Phoenix.
- 8:35Speaker 3: So they do it right in here.
- 8:38Speaker 1: What I mean by they do it right this is
- 8:40Speaker 1: a program again starting young. They got a lot of
- 8:43Speaker 1: young kids here that are starving to become champions one day.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I love it. So they grassroots. That's what they're about
- 8:52Speaker 1: here and foundation. I love it, That's what I'm about.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Okay, so let's talk about this event by Phoenix Saturday,
- 8:59Speaker 2: April eighteenth, twenty twenty six. So what actually is it
- 9:02Speaker 2: because it's not just another boxing showcase.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Yeah, this is not.
- 9:05Speaker 1: This is an event and JT and I this is
- 9:08Speaker 1: what I told them we need to do in order
- 9:11Speaker 1: to really get people to uh grasp the concept of
- 9:15Speaker 1: combat sports. We're bringing in people hopefully because they want
- 9:20Speaker 1: to hear live music, not just because of the MMA
- 9:23Speaker 1: or the boxing. We're bringing in of course, people who
- 9:25Speaker 1: are boxing fans that may not know about the talent
- 9:28Speaker 1: around Phoenix. You know, I told JT we got to
- 9:31Speaker 1: have Phoenix talent on this car. The Phoenix talent isn't
- 9:34Speaker 1: on this car, what are we doing it for? So
- 9:37Speaker 1: we're trying to We tried to bring the best guys
- 9:39Speaker 1: out here in Phoenix that are out here that you know,
- 9:42Speaker 1: aren't signed, that don't have big contracts, that don't have
- 9:46Speaker 1: big opportunities, but have the ability to be to have that,
- 9:49Speaker 1: you know. So this is a a an event that's
- 9:54Speaker 1: uh jam packed with entertainment, a lot of vendors is
- 9:58Speaker 1: going to be around h and uh, it's just a
- 10:01Speaker 1: kind of an outreach program, an event for the for
- 10:04Speaker 1: the community.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Great and if you mentioned m m A you know, honestly,
- 10:08Speaker 2: I've never gotten into it because I've been a boxing guy.
- 10:10Speaker 2: All I might just be jealous as I can't cake,
- 10:12Speaker 2: I'm not, yeah, yeah, cannot. When you see boxing in MMA,
- 10:17Speaker 2: it seems to me that there's a rivalry between the two.
- 10:19Speaker 3: But how do you see it all?
- 10:20Speaker 1: Listen, man, I've met a lot of UFC guys that
- 10:24Speaker 1: know exactly who I am, They know my entire career.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Those guys love boxing. So let's like, let's kind of
- 10:30Speaker 1: nip that in above for this for this platform right here.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I think it's the boxers, right So, I think it's
- 10:35Speaker 1: the boxers looking at what MMA has been able to
- 10:38Speaker 1: do with UFC has been able to do over the
- 10:40Speaker 1: years in terms of their audience just continuing to grow. Well,
- 10:43Speaker 1: they found a recipe for success, and I think most
- 10:46Speaker 1: boxers are nbus of it opposed to trying to learn
- 10:50Speaker 1: from it. But I know this, I know that the
- 10:52Speaker 1: UFC guys, the MMA guys, the big timers, they love boxing,
- 10:56Speaker 1: They love us and Uh. It caused me to say, oh, man,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I gotta become fans of you guys as well. This
- 11:02Speaker 1: can't be a one one one way track, you know.
- 11:04Speaker 1: So I've been trying to learn the sport more, been
- 11:07Speaker 1: trying to become more of a fan of the sport,
- 11:09Speaker 1: more of a fan of some of the fighters out there.
- 11:12Speaker 1: So this event that we're doing, I think it's gonna
- 11:15Speaker 1: mesh perfectly because both the M m A guys that
- 11:18Speaker 1: we have fighting, the boxers that we have fighting, no
- 11:21Speaker 1: one's made it big yet. Everybody's trying to make it
- 11:24Speaker 1: big and everybody has the ability to make it big,
- 11:26Speaker 1: and so I think it's it's gonna be an amazing
- 11:30Speaker 1: and beautiful mesh on fight night. And uh, we won't
- 11:33Speaker 1: see any fights in the background with boxers and MMA
- 11:36Speaker 1: guys on fight night. It's gonna be fun. Everybody's gonna
- 11:39Speaker 1: have a lot of peace. It's gonna be very entertaining.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Last question, just personally speaking growing up, well, do you
- 11:46Speaker 2: have a favorite fight that really got you in the
- 11:48Speaker 2: boxing or a boxer?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Yeah? We you know, we were talking about this the
- 11:51Speaker 3: other day.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Man Marvelous, Marvin Hagler and uh and Tommy hearns him
- 11:56Speaker 1: and hearns. I remember seeing that fight and it just
- 12:00Speaker 1: it was so entertaining for me, you know, and because
- 12:03Speaker 1: I was already boxing, like, I was able to see
- 12:05Speaker 1: so many different variables and components to that. Was it
- 12:09Speaker 1: like a couple of rounds that that they win? Was
- 12:12Speaker 1: was it one round? The first round was sort of
- 12:15Speaker 1: the most Yeah, yeah, yeah, that first round was just
- 12:18Speaker 1: there was so much in that first round that you
- 12:21Speaker 1: can take from the entire fight, and that was the
- 12:24Speaker 1: one that really grabbed me and said, hey man, this
- 12:27Speaker 1: is something you might want to do.
- 12:28Speaker 2: I said, well, thank you, Sean Porter. I heard the
- 12:31Speaker 2: Mixed Company podcast. We can't take you enough for being
- 12:33Speaker 2: on the mic and answering these questions.
- 12:35Speaker 3: You got it, so I got it. Thank you.
