- 0:08I'm your host, Hannah McGivern for October 17th.
- 0:12Today is National Pasta Day, a delicious celebration that
- 0:15honors one of the world's most beloved and versatile foods.
- 0:19Observed annually on October 17th, this day gives pasta
- 0:23lovers everywhere permission to indulge in their favorite noodle
- 0:27dishes without guilt. In fact, the entire month of
- 0:31October is National Pasta Month, though the celebration has been
- 0:36building. While pasta is strongly
- 0:38associated with Italian cuisine, its origins are actually quite
- 0:43ancient and somewhat mysterious. Some historians trace pasta like
- 0:48foods back thousands of years, the ancient civilizations in
- 0:52Asia and the Middle East. What we do know is that pasta
- 0:57was well established in Italy by the 12th century, and Thomas
- 1:01Jefferson helped popularize it in America when he brought back
- 1:05macaroni and a pasta making machine from Europe in 1789.
- 1:10What makes National Pasta Day special is its celebration of
- 1:14accessibility and versatility. With over 600 different pasta
- 1:19shapes and countless ways to prepare them, pasta is the
- 1:24ultimate democratic food Affordable, satisfying, and able
- 1:28to accommodate nearly every dietary preference and culinary
- 1:32tradition. And that brings us to today's
- 1:36quote from Italian actress Sophia Loren, who famously said
- 1:43everything you see I owe to Spaghetti.
- 1:48Loren's playful observation about her famous figure is
- 1:52actually deeper than it first appears.
- 1:55She's not just talking about pasta as fuel, he's talking
- 1:59about how the simple pleasures and traditions of her culture
- 2:03shaped who she became. Pasta, for Lauren and millions
- 2:08of Italians isn't just food. It's family, tradition, comfort,
- 2:13and identity all wrapped up in a simple dish.
- 2:17Think about what pasta really represents.
- 2:21It's the meal families gather around for Sunday dinners.
- 2:25It's the comfort food that makes bad days better.
- 2:29It's the affordable staple that feeds students, families, and
- 2:32everyone in between. It's the blank canvas that
- 2:36welcomes whatever ingredients you have on hand.
- 2:39Lauren understood that we are, in a very real sense, made of
- 2:43what we eat, not just physically, but culturally and
- 2:47emotionally. The foods we grow up with shape
- 2:50our memories, our sense of home, our connections to family and
- 2:54community. When she credits spaghetti for
- 2:58everything we see, she's acknowledging that for Italian
- 3:02heritage with pasta at its heart, made her who she is.
- 3:07National Pasta Day celebrates this truth.
- 3:10The food is never just food. It's culture, history, family,
- 3:16and love all mixed together and served on a plate.
- 3:20So today, embrace the spirit of National Pasta Day.
- 3:23Whether you make pasta from scratch, boil it up from a box
- 3:27of dried pasta, or visit your favorite Italian restaurant,
- 3:32take a moment to appreciate what pasta represents.
- 3:36Maybe cook a pasta dish and share it with people you care
- 3:39about. Maybe call up an older relative
- 3:42and ask them to teach you their pasta recipe.
- 3:45Maybe simply slow down during dinner tonight and really savor
- 3:49your food instead of eating mindlessly.
- 3:52Remember Sophia Loren's wisdom. The simple things we eat and
- 3:58share aren't just sustenance, they're the building blocks of
- 4:03who we become and how we connect with others.
- 4:06That's going to do it for today. I'm Anna McGivern, signing off
- 4:09for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
