From a single 1919 grocery shop to Canada’s biggest grocer in just four years, Dominion Stores exploded in growth—bagging groceries for customers before self-checkouts existed. Under J. William Horsey, it modernized with fair wages, benefits, and big new supermarkets, even as store counts dipped. The 1950s brought flashy openings and the iconic “It’s mainly because of the meat!” slogan. But by the 1970s, inflation and fierce competition took their toll.
