• 2:32
Speaker 3: in studio with us this morning to talk about some
• 2:33
Speaker 3: exciting stuff going on at the Shawnee Sports Complex. We
• 2:36
Speaker 3: have with us Kadan County Commissioned President Vin Solango, Jen
• 2:40
Speaker 3: Wood of ZMM Architect and Engineers, Mara Boggs from the
• 2:43
Speaker 3: Charleston Area Alliance here as well.
• 2:46
Speaker 4: Commissioner. We'll start with you, good morning, sir, more show.
• 2:49
Speaker 4: Thanks for having me on. I appreciate it.
• 2:50
Speaker 3: And Mara Charles Mary Alliance your first time on the
• 2:53
Speaker 3: show than be in here and Jen also, I think
• 2:56
Speaker 3: it's your first time first time on the show. So
• 2:57
Speaker 3: all right, so Ben, you're the veteran here, so you
• 3:00
Speaker 3: can you can tell them what they do, what they
• 3:02
Speaker 3: need to say, what they need to do, because you're
• 3:04
  Speaker 3: a regular here.
• 3:05
Speaker 6: I'm just going to give hand signals and winks and
• 3:07
Speaker 6: then I'll just show you where the volume just say
• 3:09
Speaker 6: is and otherwise and just start to start talking.
• 3:11
Speaker 4: Just roll with it.
• 3:12
Speaker 7: We're in good hands.
• 3:14
Speaker 4: No, you're not all right, you're trouble.
• 3:16
Speaker 3: All right, commission the present, and I want to start
• 3:18
Speaker 3: with you because this whole thing was kind of your
• 3:21
Speaker 3: vision to begin what I'm talking about.
• 3:22
Speaker 4: Overall the sports complex. Talk about where we were and
• 3:26
Speaker 4: where we are now.
• 3:27
Speaker 6: Well, it started back in twenty seventeen. My youngest son.
• 3:31
Speaker 6: It's funny because he's getting ready to go to college
• 3:33
Speaker 6: in two weeks. But back when he was nine years old,
• 3:36
Speaker 6: he was playing travel soccer all over the country. I
• 3:39
Speaker 6: mean even internationally. We went a few times. But so
• 3:43
Speaker 6: everywhere we would go, I mean we would have to
• 3:44
Speaker 6: stay thirty forty minutes away from the facility, you know.
• 3:47
Speaker 6: So we'd go for a soccer torn we couldn't get
• 3:49
Speaker 6: within thirty or forty miles of the facility. For a
• 3:52
Speaker 6: hotel room. Restaurants were packed. You'd go just to standard
• 3:56
Speaker 6: fast food and the line would be out the door.
• 3:58
Speaker 6: And so we kept saying, why can't we have something
• 4:00
Speaker 6: like that in West Virginia? And so I remember when
• 4:04
Speaker 6: I was appointed commission back in twenty seventeen, the very
• 4:07
Speaker 6: first email I ever sent out as commissioner was have
• 4:10
Speaker 6: we ever studied sports tourism here in the kanav Valley?
• 4:13
Speaker 6: And there had been a couple of studies, it was
• 4:15
Speaker 6: one twenty years ago and won thirty years ago, but
• 4:18
Speaker 6: nobody had really ever.
• 4:19
  Speaker 4: Acted on it.
• 4:20
Speaker 6: And so I took those old plans, did some updated
• 4:23
Speaker 6: research and that's how it started. That's how the Shawnee
• 4:26
Speaker 6: Sports Complex started. And we people thought I was crazy,
• 4:31
Speaker 6: and they were probably right.
• 4:33
Speaker 4: Yeah, they were probably right.
• 4:34
Speaker 6: But when we designed that facility, the initial sketch was
• 4:39
Speaker 6: actually Aladelphia on a napkin.
• 4:42
Speaker 3: And that's where all good ideas come from. Was bar napkin? Right,
• 4:46
  Speaker 3: that's a fact.
• 4:47
Speaker 6: And I was there with a couple of friends and
• 4:48
Speaker 6: then I took that sketch to Adam Crason and he said,
• 4:52
Speaker 6: that's terrible, but I think we can do better. And
• 4:56
Speaker 6: that's how it started. So we actually when that concept
• 4:59
Speaker 6: came up in February of twenty seventeen, we actually broke
• 5:02
Speaker 6: ground on that facility in December of twenty seventeen. So
• 5:07
Speaker 6: you go from you know, a sketch on a napkin
• 5:09
Speaker 6: to actually breaking ground. Obviously that could not have happened
• 5:12
Speaker 6: without the support of the other commissioners. We had so
• 5:15
Speaker 6: many public hearings, so much input, and ZMM has been
• 5:19
Speaker 6: with us all the way they designed that facility. They
• 5:22
Speaker 6: did a just an absolute wonderful job and we're proud
• 5:26
Speaker 6: of it. You know, the facilities brought in over one
• 5:28
Speaker 6: hundred and fifty million dollars in economic impact since we
• 5:30
Speaker 6: opened in twenty eighteen. We cut the ribbon I think
• 5:34
Speaker 6: was in July twenty eighteen, and a lot of those
• 5:37
Speaker 6: kids that cut the ribbon back then are going to
• 5:40
Speaker 6: be there tomorrow to open the new building. So all
• 5:43
Speaker 6: of them. Some of them are going into the army,
• 5:44
Speaker 6: some are going to college. But they're all, you know,
• 5:47
Speaker 6: back then they were nine years old and now they're
• 5:49
Speaker 6: you know, adults, so they're going to come into.
• 5:52
Speaker 3: So tell us what we got going on with this
• 5:53
Speaker 3: now wean't to talk about ZMM architects and their vision
• 5:56
Speaker 3: with this to Marrol bring you as well, but Ben,
• 5:58
Speaker 3: tell us what's going on actually for this ribbon.
• 6:00
Speaker 6: So it's a five million dollar project. We realized that
• 6:03
Speaker 6: we needed a bigger entrance building. We needed something that
• 6:05
Speaker 6: we could Obviously, we needed more restrooms because every time
• 6:09
Speaker 6: we had a big tournament the restroom lines were long.
• 6:11
Speaker 6: We needed upgraded concessions, we needed just a bigger space,
• 6:16
Speaker 6: and so ZMM designed this wonderful space for us. We
• 6:20
Speaker 6: got an earmark from our US senators, a former senator
• 6:26
Speaker 6: mansion of around three million dollars. Then Governor Justice we
• 6:31
Speaker 6: were able to get a million dollars from the state
• 6:34
Speaker 6: to do this, and then the county put in a
• 6:36
Speaker 6: little over a million dollars. But you know, if it
• 6:38
Speaker 6: wasn't for our US senators, if it wasn't for the governor,
• 6:41
Speaker 6: this project would not have happened. And so tomorrow we
• 6:43
Speaker 6: get a cut the ribbon on it. We're going to
• 6:45
Speaker 6: open it up and it's really going to change the
• 6:47
Speaker 6: entire look of the complex, the entire experience at the complex.
• 6:52
Speaker 4: We're very proud of it.
• 6:53
Speaker 3: Jin let's talk about jen Wood from ZMM Marketitects and
• 6:55
Speaker 3: engineers talking about zm's involvement.
• 6:57
Speaker 8: In this sure so being a part of this is
• 7:00
Speaker 8: so important to us, our relationship with the Shawnee Foundation,
• 7:03
Speaker 8: with the complex, and as Commissioner said that, we've been
• 7:07
Speaker 8: involved from from the beginning, and it's so important for
• 7:10
Speaker 8: us to be involved in economic drivers in our in
• 7:13
Speaker 8: our area, tourism and sports tourism, which is a huge
• 7:19
Speaker 8: part for us. And so partnering with teared on Prey
• 7:22
Speaker 8: Construction and Omega to really bring this new phase to
• 7:27
Speaker 8: life for the student athletes and the young people in
• 7:29
Speaker 8: our community and their families and all of those that
• 7:32
Speaker 8: are coming to visit our area is huge for ZMM
• 7:35
Speaker 8: as well as for the region. So we've been very
• 7:38
Speaker 8: proud to be a part of the project all along
• 7:40
Speaker 8: and to really to the point that the Commissioner made
• 7:42
Speaker 8: it made of making this this entrance and giving even
• 7:49
Speaker 8: more of an opportunity for those that are visiting to
• 7:53
Speaker 8: have that wow of of seeing themselves walk through that
• 7:57
Speaker 8: tunnel and to have that experience, but also increased number
• 8:00
Speaker 8: of restrooms and increased concessions, and so it's really about
• 8:05
Speaker 8: function of the space because the need has grown so
• 8:08
Speaker 8: much in the last few years, but also really providing
• 8:14
Speaker 8: a focal point for visitors to see what we have
• 8:18
Speaker 8: to offer in Charleston and Kannall County.
• 8:20
Speaker 4: It's nine to fifteen.
• 8:21
Speaker 3: We talked about the expansion of the Shawnee Sports Complex

Speaker 3: Alliance talk about what this has meant, this complex and
• 8:44
Speaker 3: how important it is to what you folks do with
• 8:46
  Speaker 3: the Alliance.
• 8:47
Speaker 7: Sure, Dave, thank you. I'll tell you it's one thing
• 8:49
Speaker 7: to have big ideas. It's a completely different thing to
• 8:52
Speaker 7: bring them to fruition. So this project is the absolute
• 8:57
Speaker 7: excellent example of that, and it wouldn't have had and
• 9:00
Speaker 7: without Commissioner Selango his vision and tenacity and follow through.
• 9:05
Speaker 7: You see that every time you go there. And then
• 9:07
Speaker 7: to bring partners in like ZMM Jen and Adam. It's
• 9:11
Speaker 7: just an amazing project, so we're honored to be a
• 9:14
Speaker 7: part of. Tomorrow we'll be hosting our monthly business after hours.
• 9:18
Speaker 7: We have over two hundred people registered, which will be

Speaker 12: When we think about substance use disorder in West Virginia,
• 10:37
Speaker 12: we need everyone to come together and motivate change. Artists
• 10:41
Speaker 12: and recovery activists throughout the state have teamed up to
• 10:44
Speaker 12: paint murals that inspire hard conversations. It may seem small,
• 10:49
Speaker 12: but everyone played a role in breaking through stigma and
• 10:52
Speaker 12: turning these murals into something vibrant and meaningful. When it
• 10:56
Speaker 12: comes to how we think about recovery. It takes all

Speaker 3: Wood from ZMM Architects and Engineers is here, Mara Boggs
• 11:59
Speaker 3: from the trail near your lines and Canawha County commission
• 12:02
Speaker 3: President of Ben Selanga. I want to talk about economic
• 12:04
Speaker 3: impact here because it's all about is Tim Brady, my
• 12:07
Speaker 3: buddy to CVB would say heads and beds and actually
• 12:09
  Speaker 3: there's another expression.
• 12:10
Speaker 4: I can't say that Tim, and I say, but.
• 12:13
Speaker 3: Having a little bit of experience in that sort of
• 12:15
Speaker 3: realm of myself, people that you know don't understand. I
• 12:19
Speaker 3: think sometimes what a big business that tourism, sports tourism
• 12:24
Speaker 3: is and Commissioner Selango, mar either one of you can
• 12:26
Speaker 3: weigh in on that.
• 12:27
Speaker 4: Go ahead, Mark Sure.
• 12:29
Speaker 7: I saw a recent study. West Virginia leads the nation
• 12:32
Speaker 7: in per capita tourist visits. That's about seventy five million
• 12:37
Speaker 7: in tourism annually with sixty sixty thousand jobs. So that's
• 12:43
Speaker 7: about a total impact statewide of eight point seven billion dollars.
• 12:48
Speaker 7: And so what Commissioner Selango is doing and so many
• 12:51
Speaker 7: people working in the Kanala Valley is making sure that
• 12:55
Speaker 7: the Kanala Valley is positioned to get the biggest piece
• 12:58
Speaker 7: of that that we can. And sports tourism is an
• 13:01
  Speaker 7: important part.
• 13:02
Speaker 6: Yeah, and you know, Secretary Chelsea Ruby has done an
• 13:04
Speaker 6: amazing job. She has been with us from the beginning
• 13:07
Speaker 6: and has been a big supporter. She is going to
• 13:10
Speaker 6: be at the Riven cutting as well. You know, when
• 13:14
Speaker 6: we started this project and we were looking at, you know,
• 13:17
Speaker 6: why can't we have something like this in West Virginia.
• 13:20
Speaker 6: I remember when we opened the facility. The first big
• 13:22
Speaker 6: tournament we had, which was a us USA soccer tournament
• 13:26
Speaker 6: that came in, we sold out forty eight hotels, not
• 13:30
Speaker 6: hotel rooms. Forty eight hotels. You could not get a
• 13:34
Speaker 6: room within a three hour radius of Charleston Wishman. People
• 13:37
Speaker 6: were staying in Kentucky. People were filling up the Chief
• 13:40
Speaker 6: Logan Lodge. People were staying in flat woods, and I
• 13:43
Speaker 6: think people actually felt for the first time what it's
• 13:46
Speaker 6: like to have, you know, twenty five thousand people in town,
• 13:50
Speaker 6: you know, when they're staying there three or four days
• 13:52
Speaker 6: in a row. So that very first tournament that we
• 13:54
Speaker 6: did brought in thirty eight million dollars in economic impact.
• 13:57
Speaker 6: And so at the ten year mark of shawne In
• 14:00
Speaker 6: about twenty twenty eight, we're going to approach about a
• 14:02
Speaker 6: quarter of a billion dollars in economic impact billion would
• 14:05
Speaker 6: the BEE if you're writing that down at home, and
• 14:08
Speaker 6: you know, I think it's a concept that we got
• 14:11
Speaker 6: on in my opinion, late, but earlier than a lot
• 14:14
Speaker 6: of other communities. So now you see all these other
• 14:17
Speaker 6: you know, cities, and you see other counties and not
• 14:20
Speaker 6: just in West Virginia but elsewhere trying to mimic what
• 14:23
Speaker 6: we've done. So we have to stay ahead of the game.
• 14:25
Speaker 6: We've got to make sure that we are bringing new
• 14:27
Speaker 6: things to the facility. I think you'll see a lot
• 14:30
Speaker 6: of changes over the next few years. You know, we've
• 14:32
Speaker 6: got this big facility, the entrance building being opened, We've
• 14:36
Speaker 6: got some additional things that are going to be coming up.
• 14:38
Speaker 6: We're also trying to enhance the experience for the community,
• 14:42
Speaker 6: the folks that actually live there. You know, we've got
• 14:44
Speaker 6: the pickleball courts, we redid the basketball courts. We spent
• 14:47
Speaker 6: about three hundred fifty thousand dollars rehabbing the pool. We
• 14:50
Speaker 6: spent two hundred and fifty thousand dollars putting the new
• 14:52
Speaker 6: playground in, which is massive if you haven't been over
• 14:55
Speaker 6: there in the front part of the park, but it's
• 14:58
Speaker 6: it's really it's changed chan it's chained sports tourism in
• 15:03
Speaker 6: Conaw County to the point where you know it's working
• 15:06
Speaker 6: because other communities are trying to copy it.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: And I think it's also important guys to remember that
• 15:12
Speaker 3: what is good what's going on at Shawnee also affects.
• 15:15
Speaker 3: As you said, at that one turnament, there was not
• 15:17
Speaker 3: a hotel room for three hours. So when people come
• 15:19
Speaker 3: at me, they have on this show and said, why
• 15:21
Speaker 3: does downtown Charleston need another hotel? Well, when your nearest
• 15:24
Speaker 3: hotel is Ashland, Kentucky, but it's available, or the Chief
• 15:27
Speaker 3: Logan Lodge are some of these places, or you know,
• 15:31
Speaker 3: that's why we need more hotels. And it's also it's
• 15:33
Speaker 3: good for the entire area and not just the two
• 15:36
Speaker 3: or three miles around the complex.
• 15:38
Speaker 6: And if you look at what you look at what
• 15:39
Speaker 6: the Shawnee Sports complexes do, and you look at what
• 15:42
Speaker 6: the Charleston Coliseum Convention Bureau, you combine regatta everything else
• 15:47
Speaker 6: that's going on, I mean it really packs the weekends.
• 15:52
Speaker 6: The first one that we did, hotel or restaurants were
• 15:54
Speaker 6: running out of food. I don't know if you remember
• 15:56
Speaker 6: that back in twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen, the first big tournament,
• 16:00
Speaker 6: we had restaurants that had to close early because they
• 16:02
Speaker 6: ran out of food, that were so many customers. People
• 16:05
Speaker 6: say that when we bring in the USA tournaments, which
• 16:08
Speaker 6: is you know, we try to do those about once
• 16:11
Speaker 6: per year, and we actually have to combine it with Barbersville.
• 16:14
Speaker 6: It's the busiest that their business has been. Whether it's
• 16:17
Speaker 6: a hotel, whether it's a restaurant, whatever, sports poism works.
• 16:21
  Speaker 6: It's a forty billion dollar a year industry. And I
• 16:23
Speaker 6: think we're perfectly situated to get a big piece of
• 16:25
  Speaker 6: that pie.
• 16:26
Speaker 3: And I brought this up on the show before, being
• 16:28
Speaker 3: the kid of the you know, the nineteen seventies and
• 16:30
Speaker 3: when we played a road game, it was on the
• 16:32
Speaker 3: other end of the county. You know, we weren't going
• 16:35
Speaker 3: to Pennsylvania, we weren't going to Illinois. And we have
• 16:38
Speaker 3: seen I mean, is it safe to say that we've
• 16:40
Speaker 3: had people I guess I'm going to say probably. We've
• 16:43
Speaker 3: had people from all fifty states here.
• 16:45
Speaker 6: We had a team flying from Canada, Okay, I mean
• 16:47
Speaker 6: we've had teams from other countries. We had a team
• 16:50
Speaker 6: come in from South America. I would imagine we've had
• 16:52
Speaker 6: teams from all fifty states. But you know, West Virginia
• 16:57
Speaker 6: is uniquely situated too, because we're a eight hour drive
• 17:00
Speaker 6: from two thirds of the population. You know, you can
• 17:02
Speaker 6: be in New York City in eight hours, so so
• 17:05
Speaker 6: many people will come here to stay for a long
• 17:08
Speaker 6: weekend or when you're dealing with some of the larger
• 17:10
Speaker 6: tournaments four or five days, and it's just it's great
• 17:13
Speaker 6: for the local community. You know, people are making money,
• 17:15
Speaker 6: the local kids get to play, we get an experienced competition.
• 17:19
Speaker 6: We have seen you know, a lot of the kids now.
• 17:22
Speaker 6: We have so many kids now that are playing soccer
• 17:24
Speaker 6: in college. Part of that is because of the experience
• 17:27
Speaker 6: they're getting at Shawnee and some of the other fields
• 17:29
Speaker 6: including Barbersville that they are having turf where you can
• 17:32
Speaker 6: play year round. So there's a lot going on.
• 17:35
  Speaker 12: It.
• 17:35
  Speaker 6: It's really it's a project that I thought would work,
• 17:39
Speaker 6: but I had no idea it would work to the
• 17:41
Speaker 6: extent that it did.
• 17:42
Speaker 3: I had a texture who sent me an article here.
• 17:44
Speaker 3: I can't read the article, but I can read the headline.
• 17:47
Speaker 3: West Virginia joins Florida, Tennessee, North Carolina, Washington, Illinois and
• 17:51
Speaker 3: skyrocketing record tourism boom last year.
• 17:54
Speaker 6: Yeah, and that's that's honestly a credit to the amount
• 17:58
Speaker 6: of time and money that the state of Western Virginia
• 18:00
Speaker 6: is putting into tourism. I mean, it is a focus it.
• 18:03
Speaker 6: When you go out of state now you go to
• 18:05
Speaker 6: North Carolina, South Carolina, you're seeing West Virginia ads and
• 18:07
Speaker 6: people are coming here. They're going whitewater rafting. You know,
• 18:09
Speaker 6: you got the new over Gorge Bridge. It's now a
• 18:11
Speaker 6: national park. It's bringing over a million dollars or a
• 18:14
Speaker 6: million people per year. So there's a lot going on.
• 18:17
Speaker 6: And that was our US Senators Shelley Moore Capito and
• 18:21
Speaker 6: Senator former Senator Joe Manson made that happen. And so
• 18:26
Speaker 6: people are coming here and they're staying here, and you're
• 18:28
Speaker 6: and the dividends are you're seeing them now?
• 18:31
Speaker 7: Yeah, that report I cited seventy five million visitors annually
• 18:35
  Speaker 7: to our state.
• 18:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, in the state that's only got one point six
• 18:38
  Speaker 6: million people exactly.
• 18:39
Speaker 3: So are we going out there going could you stay
• 18:41
Speaker 3: a while? Could you buy a house here?
• 18:44
Speaker 4: You know, talk about that a little bit.
• 18:45
  Speaker 2: That's what we're doing.
• 18:46
Speaker 4: Yeah, that's that's the whole idea.
• 18:48
Speaker 3: And again I think that it's important for people to
• 18:51
Speaker 3: understand that if they will take just any average tournament soccer,
• 18:55
Speaker 3: whatever the case may be, a team may play on
• 18:59
Speaker 3: Friday afternoon at three and then not play again until
• 19:02
Speaker 3: Saturday afternoon at four. So what are they going to
• 19:07
Speaker 3: do during that time? They're not gonna I mean, you
• 19:09
Speaker 3: can only scout the other teams so much. You know,
• 19:11
Speaker 3: they're gonna go eat, they're gonna go see a movie,
• 19:14
Speaker 3: They're gonna do all these things.
• 19:15
Speaker 6: They're going out to the trampoline park, they're going to
• 19:17
Speaker 6: the movies. They're doing you know, as much as we
• 19:20
Speaker 6: can offer that they're doing it. We're even we'ven coordinated
• 19:23
Speaker 6: with the whitewater rafting companies to bust them down to
• 19:26
Speaker 6: failable to whitewater rafts. So we want to make sure
• 19:30
Speaker 6: that they have a good experience and that they want
• 19:32
Speaker 6: to come back. That's the key, you know, when when
• 19:34
Speaker 6: they come here from Pennsylvania or New York, or the
• 19:38
Speaker 6: Carolinas or Florida, wherever. We want to make sure that
• 19:40
Speaker 6: when they leave here they enjoy the experience and they're
• 19:44
Speaker 6: already looking at when is the next tournament at the
• 19:46
Speaker 6: Shawnee Sports Complex Because we want them back over and
• 19:49
Speaker 6: over and over again.
• 19:50
Speaker 3: Jim, let me bring you back in Jim, Jim jen
• 19:53
Speaker 3: netwould from ZMAI architects and engineers and you guys have
• 19:56
Speaker 3: been as I said, on this thing. You know from
• 19:58
Speaker 3: day one with this and and I know you're going
• 20:00
Speaker 3: to be a part of future expansions as well.
• 20:03
Speaker 8: It's just such a you know, as we're talking about
• 20:05
Speaker 8: all the features of why people would come to West
• 20:07
Speaker 8: Virginia and visit and stay, whether it's for the National
• 20:10
Speaker 8: Park or for Shawnee or both, we hope and a
• 20:13
Speaker 8: myriad of other things for ZMM to be a part
• 20:15
Speaker 8: of such wonderful projects that that show our state and
• 20:20
Speaker 8: bring people here and help grow the state.
• 20:22
  Speaker 14: That's what we're all about.
• 20:24
Speaker 8: We talk a lot about we take the vision and
• 20:27
Speaker 8: the ideas of leaders like Commissioner Slango and their vision
• 20:32
Speaker 8: and help create what they want to see in their
• 20:36
Speaker 8: communities and we bring those visions to life. And so
• 20:39
Speaker 8: for us to be a part of the Shawnee Complex
• 20:43
Speaker 8: for projects across the state and into Virginia and Ohio,
• 20:46
Speaker 8: it's such a point of pride for all of us
• 20:50
Speaker 8: in design excellence, but in supporting our communities. ZMM contributed
• 20:55
Speaker 8: more than three hundred thousand dollars to the community in
• 20:57
Speaker 8: cash donations last year. So beyond providing design services, beyond
• 21:02
Speaker 8: having our employees who live and work here, the folks
• 21:06
Speaker 8: that work in our Charleston Design studio are also the
• 21:08
Speaker 8: families that are out at Shawnee cheering on their you know,
• 21:11
Speaker 8: athletes and their family members and you know, going out
• 21:15
Speaker 8: to regatta and going out to the activities in the
• 21:17
Speaker 8: community because we live here and this is our community
• 21:20
Speaker 8: and we want West Virginia to be a great place
• 21:22
Speaker 8: to So this is all very very much a point.
• 21:24
Speaker 4: Of pride for us.
• 21:25
Speaker 8: And I know that we have a whole group of
• 21:26
Speaker 8: folks from ZMM coming out to the ribbon cutting tomorrow
• 21:29
Speaker 8: night because this is something that all of us are
• 21:31
Speaker 8: proud to do. I know one of the designers, Jure Allen,
• 21:34
Speaker 8: who's been involved in this project, grew up in the
• 21:36
Speaker 8: neighborhood and for him to know that he's from the
• 21:39
Speaker 8: Dunbar area in Kennall County and to get to work
• 21:42
Speaker 8: on this project as a young architectural designer is a
• 21:45
Speaker 8: huge thing. And that's that's what it's all about, is giving,
• 21:47
Speaker 8: giving young people an opportunity to be a part of
• 21:49
Speaker 8: these big things that are happening.
• 21:51
Speaker 3: Mar I want to go back to you for a
• 21:52
Speaker 3: moment to mar Bobs with Charles Near Alliance. I kind
• 21:54
Speaker 3: of joke there, I said, with all these people that
• 21:56
Speaker 3: are coming in, like double triple the population, we're out
• 21:58
Speaker 3: there saying, hey, would you like to move here? But
• 22:00
Speaker 3: in all seriousness, you talked about some of you alluded
• 22:03
Speaker 3: to some of the efforts of folks like the Charlestonairy
• 22:06
Speaker 3: Alliance and others that are trying, really trying to get
• 22:09
Speaker 3: these people to say, hey, while you're here, take a
• 22:11
Speaker 3: look at what we have.
• 22:12
  Speaker 13: Right.
• 22:13
Speaker 7: Yeah, one example the power of collaboration. I mean, that's
• 22:17
Speaker 7: really what this is, public private, nonprofit collaboration. But we
• 22:21
Speaker 7: actually have the Convention of Visitors Bureau. We talked about
• 22:24
Speaker 7: Tim Brady. He's moving into our headquarters soon, you'll have
• 22:26
Speaker 7: an office. So we'll be working with him almost as
• 22:30
Speaker 7: a new marketing arm for the Charleston Area Alliance to
• 22:33
Speaker 7: really market the whole Kanal Valley. And you know that
• 22:38
Speaker 7: partnership is just so key, and this is the perfect
• 22:41
  Speaker 7: example of that.
• 22:43
  Speaker 4: Been.
• 22:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, the more people we get here to
• 22:46
Speaker 6: see it, and we actually saw this during COVID. A
• 22:48
Speaker 6: lot of people were not wanting to live in the
• 22:50
Speaker 6: big city anymore. I mean they didn't want to live
• 22:52
Speaker 6: in New York. They did want to live out west.
• 22:53
Speaker 6: They wanted to come here, and we saw some housing
• 22:56
Speaker 6: issues you know in a lot of our communities where
• 23:00
Speaker 6: folks from out of state will come in and buy
• 23:02
Speaker 6: and either try to verbo when they weren't living here
• 23:04
Speaker 6: or they were working remotely. But I think you can
• 23:06
Speaker 6: do that now. A lot of people can work remotely.
• 23:10
Speaker 6: It's not as popular today as it was, say three
• 23:12
Speaker 6: or four years ago, but you're still seeing a lot
• 23:14
Speaker 6: of folks do it. And we have seen a lot
• 23:17
Speaker 6: of people come in from out of town that stay here.
• 23:20
Speaker 6: But I'll tell you the the more amenities we offer.
• 23:23
Speaker 6: The Shawnee Sports Complex is one of the things that
• 23:25
Speaker 6: are local hospitals. For instance, when they're trying to recruit
• 23:28
Speaker 6: a new physician and they're showing them what we have
• 23:31
Speaker 6: to offer. Obviously they're going to go Mart Park, they're
• 23:35
Speaker 6: going to the Clay Center, but they're also going to
• 23:36
Speaker 6: the Shawnee Sports Complex because their kids are going to
• 23:39
Speaker 6: be playing there, either baseball, softball, you know, soccer whatever
• 23:42
Speaker 6: it is, football on the weekends and in the afternoon,
• 23:45
Speaker 6: so it's some definitely something that is being used as
• 23:48
Speaker 6: a recruiting tool as well.
• 23:49
Speaker 3: Well. And again I think it's important to remember and Mara,
• 23:51
Speaker 3: this is kind of up your ally as well. You
• 23:53
Speaker 3: know that when people only work so many hours a
• 23:56
Speaker 3: day and the job is going to bring you somewhere,
• 23:59
Speaker 3: which you know is completely understandable. But once you're off
• 24:03
Speaker 3: at five o'clock or whatever the time is, you got
• 24:04
Speaker 3: to have something else to do. And this and the
• 24:07
Speaker 3: Kanawh Valley in general does. And we're our own worst enemy.
• 24:10
Speaker 3: I mean, let's be honest, you all know this. You know,
• 24:12
Speaker 3: we're all West Virginia's we're our own worst enemy. Sometimes
• 24:15
Speaker 3: we always talk about the bad stuff, and there is
• 24:17
Speaker 3: bad stuff talking about, but there's also a lot of
• 24:19
Speaker 3: good stuff to talk about as well. And I do
• 24:20
Speaker 3: think it's interesting what you brought up, Commission President Selango,
• 24:24
Speaker 3: that when these the hospitals and the others are bringing
• 24:27
Speaker 3: in people, you take them out and you let them
• 24:29
Speaker 3: see these things like the ballpark.
• 24:30
Speaker 4: You let them see.
• 24:31
Speaker 3: When we you know, if it's during Christmas, when we
• 24:34
Speaker 3: do Holly Jolly Browley and Light the Night and these
• 24:37
  Speaker 3: other things.
• 24:37
  Speaker 4: Marrow Well.
• 24:38
Speaker 7: A few years ago the city of Charleston received a
• 24:41
Speaker 7: grant and formed the Charleston Roots Program, which Aaron new
• 24:45
Speaker 7: New standing right over there managed. It brought in thirty
• 24:48
Speaker 7: five new remote workers and seventy five family members, so
• 24:51
Speaker 7: over one hundred new Charleston residents. You know, you got
• 24:56
Speaker 7: to start somewhere with population loss, and the reason these
• 24:59
Speaker 7: people came here, we found was the amenities we offered,
• 25:02
Speaker 7: the outdoor recreation, the quality of life here. So we're
• 25:07
Speaker 7: really looking at that at the Charles Stonary Alliance and
• 25:10
Speaker 7: investing in new programs to bring even more people here.
• 25:13
Speaker 3: We've got a text here to the show kind of
• 25:16
Speaker 3: related to what we're talking about, says many aren't aware
• 25:18
Speaker 3: that West Virginia is a film location destination. Also, celebrities
• 25:22
Speaker 3: love coming here too, and they actually sent me a
• 25:24
Speaker 3: picture of Dean Kine, Superman, actually attending the Backyard Brawl
• 25:29
Speaker 3: two years ago in Morgantown while he took a break
• 25:31
Speaker 3: in filming. And several movies have been made here, including
• 25:34
Speaker 3: Bridgeport and other areas too. So we'll just got it
• 25:36
Speaker 3: all going on here now, Yeah, I mean, I think
• 25:38
Speaker 3: it's a place that people want to come in. The
• 25:40
  Speaker 3: people are nice.
• 25:41
Speaker 6: You know, if you have a flat tire, you're not
• 25:43
Speaker 6: going to set there more than a couple of minutes
• 25:44
Speaker 6: before somebody stops and helps. I mean, it's just it's
• 25:47
Speaker 6: one of those communities where it's very close knit. Everybody
• 25:51
Speaker 6: is friendly and they want to help out. And it
• 25:54
Speaker 6: doesn't surprise me, you know, when I'm walking down Capitol
• 25:57
Speaker 6: Street and then I see Jennifer Garner sitting in a
• 25:59
Speaker 6: local coffee shop, and you know, they'd love to come
• 26:02
Speaker 6: here and hang here. And it's great for us and
• 26:06
Speaker 6: it's great for them. They get a relax, they get
• 26:08
Speaker 6: to you know, do the movies, do whatever. And you know,
• 26:13
Speaker 6: we're pretty low key.
• 26:14
Speaker 4: And Jennifer Garner comes up says, mister silango, can I
• 26:17
Speaker 4: have my picture made with you? Whoa hold on? Now,
• 26:20
Speaker 4: you got to see my person. Don't post that you
• 26:22
Speaker 4: got to see my person all right before we let
• 26:25
  Speaker 4: you go.
• 26:26
Speaker 3: Let's kind of put a bow on it here, wrap
• 26:28
Speaker 3: it up as far as what's going on tomorrow.
• 26:30
Speaker 6: So tomorrow we are going to start the party around
• 26:34
Speaker 6: five PM. I think we'll cut the ribbon around five
• 26:37
Speaker 6: fifteen five point thirty, but everybody should try to be
• 26:39
Speaker 6: there about five pm. You want to come in and
• 26:41
Speaker 6: see the facility. It looks like to me when I
• 26:45
Speaker 6: go in, when I see it, it looks like a Major
• 26:47
Speaker 6: League baseball park. I mean, I think that was kind
• 26:49
Speaker 6: of the concept when they designed it, and it's it's
• 26:52
Speaker 6: absolutely stunning. It really is, and we're very proud of it.
• 26:55
Speaker 6: So show up tomorrow around five o'clock and just hang out.
• 26:58
Speaker 6: We're gonna have food, we're gonna have of a DJ.
• 27:01
Speaker 6: It's going to be a good time.
• 27:03
Speaker 7: I couldn't say it any better than that. Just come
• 27:05
Speaker 7: out and meet some new people, make new connections, and
• 27:08
Speaker 7: then just celebrate what's going on.
• 27:10
Speaker 3: And this I have the feeling this is not gonna
• 27:12
Speaker 3: be the last celebration we're going to have out there,
• 27:13
Speaker 3: because the's gonna be a lot more things coming out there.
• 27:15
Speaker 4: As we talked about earlier, we will continue to grow.
• 27:17
Speaker 4: That's the goal. Jen.
• 27:19
Speaker 14: We're just happy to be a part of this.
• 27:20
Speaker 8: It's such a point of pride for us, and I'm
• 27:22
Speaker 8: excited to celebrate with everybody tomorrow evening.
• 27:24
Speaker 3: Jen wood ZMM Architects and Engineers, Mara Boggs from Charleston

Speaker 15: I've never been in this part. I mean this is
• 30:49
  Speaker 15: different to me.
• 30:49
  Speaker 4: Yeah, you're you're getting a new studio.
• 30:51
Speaker 18: Well yeah, I got money around here, but you can't
• 30:54
Speaker 18: hide a ky TV lights, new microphone headphones that work.
• 30:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, exactly exactly. Bobby Spry' is also here with
• 31:01
Speaker 4: us as well, a one of our sales weasels. How
• 31:03
Speaker 4: you doing, Bobby weasel? Yeah that's what I call.
• 31:05
Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah, that's not what he calls me upstairs though.
• 31:10
Speaker 15: Stuff we can't say on the radio.
• 31:11
Speaker 4: All right, so, uh we we have a colorful language
• 31:15
Speaker 4: in our office with you. I'm just I'll just leave
• 31:17
  Speaker 4: it at that.
• 31:17
Speaker 3: I get it all right, eighteen years ago you got
• 31:20
Speaker 3: this idea to do this backpack attack.
• 31:22
Speaker 4: Where did the idea come from?
• 31:24
Speaker 18: I think Lisa Bug was born and one of Lisa
• 31:27
Speaker 18: kids was born because my kids, well my kids was
• 31:29
Speaker 18: in Indiana and my younger ones wasn't.
• 31:32
  Speaker 15: Thought of yet.
• 31:33
Speaker 18: But it was like, yo, let's take care of the community.
• 31:35
Speaker 18: Let's go get some backpacks. The first person I called
• 31:37
Speaker 18: was Tommy orchid Man over at Mulleins. Mulleins.
• 31:40
  Speaker 2: Uh.
• 31:40
Speaker 15: He took care of us, and I think comas too.
• 31:44
Speaker 18: And we just did this out of grassroots, just going
• 31:47
Speaker 18: to people like, hey, man, you want to donate twenty
• 31:49
Speaker 18: dollars for a magpack?
• 31:50
Speaker 15: You want to do this?
• 31:51
  Speaker 6: Now?
• 31:51
  Speaker 19: Is uh?
• 31:52
Speaker 18: Now we've got ben Selango. Look how big that thing
• 31:55
Speaker 18: turned into you hear me. Yeah, But it's it's one
• 31:58
Speaker 18: of those good, feel good moment's. Dave, you see them, man,
• 32:01
Speaker 18: you've been outside. Man, you talking about three hundred four
• 32:03
Speaker 18: hundred kids that walk through. And the best thing about
• 32:06
Speaker 18: this now eighteen years is the moms and dads that
• 32:09
Speaker 18: used to get the backpacks, now they're bringing their kids
• 32:11
Speaker 18: for the backpack. So it's one of those things that
• 32:14
Speaker 18: just make you smile, make heart smile.
• 32:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, indeed, and again we're gonna start the lineup about
• 32:19
Speaker 3: three o'clock out here on the lot. We'll start handing
• 32:21
  Speaker 3: them out at four o'clock, six o'clock they're gone. A
• 32:24
Speaker 3: couple of quick things. Kids must be present, yes, well do.
• 32:27
Speaker 3: He explained that we heard every excuse in the world. Like, Bobby,
• 32:29
Speaker 3: I'm talking about every excuse. The only way we can
• 32:31
Speaker 3: make this fair is we see your babies. Not only
• 32:34
Speaker 3: it's a backpack, but we want to talk to them.
• 32:36
Speaker 3: We want to take pictures with them, we want to
• 32:37
Speaker 3: hang out with them.
• 32:38
Speaker 15: Mom, you, oh, Dad you.
• 32:39
  Speaker 3: Oh.
• 32:40
Speaker 18: We've been seeing you for the last thirty years. I've
• 32:42
Speaker 18: been in the club with you last night. I want
• 32:44
Speaker 18: to see I want to see the little babies that
• 32:46
Speaker 18: come through. And that's the reason we do this. We
• 32:48
Speaker 18: want to make sure it's fair and we want to
• 32:50
Speaker 18: encourage these young folks how a big education is and
• 32:54
Speaker 18: take school seriously and.
• 32:55
Speaker 3: Talk about how it's changed since then, as far as
• 32:57
Speaker 3: the things that are in the backpacks, because I mean
• 33:00
Speaker 3: it's you know, education, what has changed.
• 33:04
Speaker 15: Well, Bobby you can tell, I mean, Bobby can say this.
• 33:06
Speaker 14: We oh my gosh, I remember back in the day
• 33:09
Speaker 14: we were driving out to Walgreens and stuff and these
• 33:12
Speaker 14: things clearful. Now now we've really tapped into the community
• 33:15
Speaker 14: to ask what their needs.
• 33:16
Speaker 4: So we go to the schools and the community said,
• 33:18
Speaker 4: what do you name me? And you've got a kid
• 33:20
Speaker 4: that's in school, now do.
• 33:21
Speaker 14: You she's seven, she'll be in second grade.
• 33:23
Speaker 3: And so the wants and needs of a seven or
• 33:26
Speaker 3: even a seventeen year old in twenty twenty five are
• 33:29
Speaker 3: not the same as what they were when this thing
• 33:30
Speaker 3: started eighteen years ago.
• 33:31
Speaker 14: We're not We're not stuff in these with a ton
• 33:33
Speaker 14: of notebooks, so I'll tell you that. So you know,
• 33:37
Speaker 14: as we know, everything's electronic now, so we provide pencils,
• 33:41
Speaker 14: pencil sharpeners, we do provide notebooks. What I love this
• 33:45
Speaker 14: year is that we're doing little first day kids Yep,
• 33:49
Speaker 14: water bottles and then fully functional backpacks too.
• 33:53
Speaker 3: And the water bottles is very important because aren't kids
• 33:55
Speaker 3: required to have water bottle?
• 33:56
Speaker 4: Their own water bottles?
• 33:57
  Speaker 6: Were?
• 33:57
Speaker 14: Now yeah, yep, every day?
• 33:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, and earbuds. Do we do earbuds one this year?
• 34:03
Speaker 3: I believe we did that a year before last. Okay,
• 34:06
Speaker 3: And somebody had asked me one time they text the
• 34:08
Speaker 3: show and ask about why the earbuds, and the reason
• 34:10
Speaker 3: is because in Kanawa County schools ever kids got an
• 34:12
Speaker 3: iPad you know I mean, and you have to have this,
• 34:14
  Speaker 3: so we'll try.
• 34:15
Speaker 4: To get those return to us.
• 34:16
Speaker 3: It's we talked about Selango Law with he and Bobby
• 34:19
Speaker 3: sponsoring this, but there's a lot of other people that
• 34:21
Speaker 3: are in. That's the title sponsor, but there's a whole
• 34:24
Speaker 3: lot of other people that are that are making this
• 34:26
  Speaker 3: possible as well.
• 34:27
Speaker 4: Give a shout out to some of those.
• 34:28
Speaker 14: That's great. Well, Yes, Selango Law, we have Master's Law Firm,
• 34:31
Speaker 14: the Dirty Birds who are going to be here on site.
• 34:34
Speaker 14: Kanall County Preschools, Jet Life Apparel, West Virginia Health, Right
• 34:38
Speaker 14: Trojan Landing, Marine and Power Sports, West Virginia Eye Consultants,
• 34:43
Speaker 14: Betel and Betel who we all love. They delivered my kids.
• 34:46
Speaker 15: They deliver mine too.
• 34:48
Speaker 14: Greb Dental Group, Mountain Care Network, Charleston Childcare and Learning
• 34:52
Speaker 14: Center that's at Sean Showingbaum, Charleston Police Department. Thank you.
• 34:56
Speaker 14: They always show up and provide support. Let the kids
• 34:59
  Speaker 14: see that they're providing a safe environment. I I'm mar
• 35:04
Speaker 14: Express Family Care, Health Centers, Shawnee Sports Complex, Health and
• 35:08
Speaker 14: what shoot? I always get this one.
• 35:10
  Speaker 15: What is it?
• 35:11
Speaker 14: It's the well Wealth Enhancement.
• 35:13
Speaker 15: Used to be this state Wealth Wealth Enhancement.
• 35:17
Speaker 14: Yes, now just wealth enhancement. Okay, ten and ten Norfolk,
• 35:21
Speaker 14: Southern PoCA Valley, the Deltas and the Kappas. Shot of Lee?
• 35:25
Speaker 14: So what's shot of Lee?
• 35:26
Speaker 15: That's Lisa taking pictures? Yeah, that Lisa taking pictures. Yeah.
• 35:29
Speaker 15: At Chris fil House is gonna be out there too.
• 35:31
  Speaker 15: He called me.
• 35:32
Speaker 18: You know what I like about Garib dinner group and
• 35:34
Speaker 18: we don't think about this. They put two brushes and
• 35:37
Speaker 18: toothpaste in every bad That's right, that's good stuff.
• 35:40
  Speaker 13: Yeah.
• 35:40
Speaker 18: You know how long you've been using your tooth brush, Dave,
• 35:43
Speaker 18: be honest, probably too long?
• 35:46
Speaker 15: Grab you one brother, you know.
• 35:48
Speaker 14: Jb Acres is also a sponsor as well. He hopefully
• 35:52
Speaker 14: will stop by be helping us pass out some backpacks today,
• 35:55
Speaker 14: So look forward to seeing him.
• 35:56
Speaker 3: And that's a big part of it too, is guys,
• 35:58
Speaker 3: we always have a lot of folks that did show
• 36:00
Speaker 3: up just to help. I mean, because this is a
• 36:02
Speaker 3: so when you're talking about giving away well over three
• 36:04
Speaker 3: hundred backpacks and people will start lining up. We tell
• 36:06
Speaker 3: them at three, but sometimes they line up a little
• 36:08
Speaker 3: bit early. Four people outside already. Well one of them,
• 36:12
Speaker 3: one of them was Ben Selango because he said he
• 36:14
Speaker 3: wanted a backpack. But but but they start lining up,
• 36:17
Speaker 3: and we we there's an orderly fashion because we can't
• 36:20
Speaker 3: have everybody coming in at one time. And if you're
• 36:21
Speaker 3: not familiar, we're where we are on Virginia Street. We're
• 36:24
Speaker 3: just up from Charleston Catholic High School. And so we
• 36:26
Speaker 3: line them up on the sidewalk out there and we let,
• 36:29
Speaker 3: you know, five six in at the time. We'll let
• 36:31
Speaker 3: a family come in at a time. But then we
• 36:32
Speaker 3: got to stop them, you know, okay now, and I
• 36:34
Speaker 3: stopped because we just can't have too many people. And
• 36:36
Speaker 3: it's pretty much like Robery always tells me, it's not
• 36:38
Speaker 3: a circle. He tells me exactly geometrically what it is.
• 36:40
Speaker 3: To me, it's a circle. No, he uses something that
• 36:45
Speaker 3: he uses, something smart people use. But so we start
• 36:49
Speaker 3: on one end, on the right side of our parking lot,
• 36:52
Speaker 3: and we go all the way around and there's people.
• 36:54
Speaker 3: There's like, you know, maybe ten or more stations that
• 36:57
Speaker 3: are set up there. And when the kids go to
• 36:59
Speaker 3: every station they pick up something. And he mentioned about
• 37:04
Speaker 3: the Charleston Police Department. I know Lieutenant p Pain's been here.
• 37:09
Speaker 3: He's out on the floating around on the boat right now,
• 37:11
Speaker 3: so you know he's got his side business returned. He'll
• 37:15
Speaker 3: probably show up. He wouldn't surprise me, he would show up.
• 37:18
  Speaker 13: I know.
• 37:18
Speaker 3: I had Travis Bayles yesterday from the Charleston Police Department
• 37:22
Speaker 3: on the show talking about the National Night Out. So
• 37:24
Speaker 3: he said they would make arrangements to be here. But
• 37:26
Speaker 3: our point is is that we're not just giving backpacks.
• 37:28
Speaker 3: We're sending them around to you know, every station to
• 37:31
  Speaker 3: pick up something.
• 37:32
Speaker 18: And you know, my sister is a police officer in
• 37:34
Speaker 18: Fort Wayne, Indiana, detective for twenty six years now. And
• 37:38
Speaker 18: people just think officers are robots, like they are human beings.
• 37:42
Speaker 18: They are family, they got feelings. So when you can
• 37:45
Speaker 18: bring these young folks around and see an officer in
• 37:47
Speaker 18: a setting that's delightful and not mad and angry and
• 37:52
Speaker 18: police lights everywhere, they can see that these officers are human.
• 37:56
Speaker 18: David Pain is one of my great friends. I go
• 37:58
Speaker 18: right on this boat, I hang out with EP. I
• 38:00
Speaker 18: text David like but and when we when we put
• 38:03
Speaker 18: these young folks in front of them with the event
• 38:06
Speaker 18: like backpack. This shows them a different light kind of
• 38:09
Speaker 18: like what night out was last night.
• 38:11
Speaker 3: You know, that's the whole idea that they don't only
• 38:13
Speaker 3: see police officers when there's something bad going bad going on.
• 38:17
Speaker 14: Yeah, we always wait. I tell people all the time.
• 38:19
Speaker 14: Do you not threaten your kids with calling?
• 38:22
Speaker 15: Yeah, that's not a good thing to do.
• 38:23
Speaker 14: Not a good thing. We don't talk.
• 38:24
Speaker 3: About that with the with with Travis Bales for the
• 38:27
Speaker 3: police department yesterday about that that exact same.
• 38:29
Speaker 14: Where my mom did it.
• 38:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, you probably should have.
• 38:32
Speaker 15: Uh, we played football, Dave you know that?
• 38:36
Speaker 4: Did you play football?
• 38:37
  Speaker 14: I played.
• 38:39
  Speaker 4: Did alignment?
• 38:41
Speaker 14: I was center? Did you know evolved?
• 38:47
  Speaker 4: Okay, that's a segment we're gonna do.
• 38:49
Speaker 3: We're gonna bring in your favorite radio personality say things
• 38:52
Speaker 3: you didn't know about them.
• 38:53
Speaker 4: That's that's what we should What don't we know about?
• 38:56
  Speaker 6: What?
• 38:56
  Speaker 4: He would?
• 38:56
Speaker 15: I don't know, you know everything an overshare, But go ahead.
• 39:01
Speaker 3: It just got to be something that people would be
• 39:03
Speaker 3: surprised to know about what it was away from radio.
• 39:05
  Speaker 15: This is easy.
• 39:06
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 39:06
Speaker 18: I don't like to hear myself on the radio, Like
• 39:08
Speaker 18: if I hear commercials and stuff. Now I listen and
• 39:11
Speaker 18: make sure the production and stuff right. Then I just
• 39:13
  Speaker 18: turn it down once I hear it's good. I don't
• 39:15
Speaker 18: like to hear myself.
• 39:16
  Speaker 4: On the radio.
• 39:16
Speaker 18: And why I'm in the car. I don't even listen
• 39:19
Speaker 18: to my station too much. I listened to the country station.
• 39:22
Speaker 18: I make sure we're good right.
• 39:23
Speaker 3: Well, in radio, you should listen to the other guys
• 39:25
Speaker 3: more than you listen to yourself.
• 39:27
Speaker 4: You know, that's what I listened.
• 39:28
Speaker 18: To better guys than listen to the country stations. Like yeah,
• 39:32
Speaker 18: that's a weird thing about me. I do not like
• 39:34
Speaker 18: to hear my voice on the radio.
• 39:36
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, well we're gonna hear your voice today
• 39:39
Speaker 3: a lot because it's the eighteenth annual one of seven
• 39:42
Speaker 3: three the Beat Backpack Attack again. It's on our parking
• 39:45
Speaker 3: lot eleven loven Virginia Street, Charleston. Will start lining up
• 39:48
Speaker 3: about three, will begin to hand out at four.
• 39:52
  Speaker 4: Kids have to.
• 39:53
Speaker 18: Be the president, no doubt. Can I give a shout
• 39:55
Speaker 18: out to Ben Slingo or not? Just what yeah they're
• 39:57
Speaker 18: doing over the Shani. I called Ben a couple of
• 40:00
Speaker 18: years ago, like Ben, I need somebody for this backpack.
• 40:03
Speaker 18: He says, sign me up forever, like this forever, Like
• 40:06
Speaker 18: he don't even he just said sign me up forever.
• 40:08
Speaker 18: I said, all right, Bob, you're signed up forever. So
• 40:10
Speaker 18: shout out to Selango Law. They do a lot of
• 40:12
Speaker 18: stuff behind the scenes that nobody knows.
• 40:14
Speaker 15: Being don't like to be.
• 40:16
Speaker 18: I know you see him a lot because he's our
• 40:17
Speaker 18: county commissioner, but he does so much stuff for our
• 40:20
Speaker 18: neighborhoods that he like, Yo, don't put this up, don't
• 40:22
Speaker 18: don't take pictures, don't do that. He just him and
• 40:25
Speaker 18: terror just a class act man. I just want to
• 40:27
Speaker 18: shot them, Yeah, for real community for.
• 40:31
  Speaker 4: All right.
• 40:31
Speaker 3: Things start again with the lineup at three and we'll
• 40:33
Speaker 3: start handing out the backpacks at four o'clock. Today Selango
• 40:36
Speaker 3: Law the eighteenth Annual Backpack Attack. Would he always a
• 40:39
Speaker 3: pleasure to have you on the show? Had g Money
• 40:42
Speaker 3: made it on the show before you did? He was
• 40:43
Speaker 3: on the show Monday.
• 40:44
Speaker 15: I don't like to hear myself talk.
• 40:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, we've proven that, we've proven that. But is he
• 40:51
Speaker 3: gonna be out there with us?
• 40:52
Speaker 15: To be out there?
• 40:53
Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of people are gonna be out there,
• 40:54
Speaker 3: and I do want to throw this out there too
• 40:57
Speaker 3: a while I get everybody in here. This Saturday, we're
• 40:59
Speaker 3: going to be a trojan landing marine starting around ten
• 41:03
Speaker 3: o'clock giving away one thousand dollars in cash and that
• 41:06
Speaker 3: bike too. So that's one of those events that all
• 41:08
Speaker 3: the stations are involved in. We have four or five
• 41:10
Speaker 3: big events every year, and the backpack attack is one
• 41:13
Speaker 3: O seven three. But I mean it's when you go
• 41:16
Speaker 3: out there, you're going to see folks from the mountain,
• 41:18
Speaker 3: and you're gonna see folks from V one hundred and KWS,
• 41:21
Speaker 3: and uh, you know, we're all we're all gonna be
• 41:23
  Speaker 3: out there.
• 41:23
Speaker 18: I don't think we care about the name on the
• 41:25
Speaker 18: front like i'd like the radio station. We don't care
• 41:27
Speaker 18: for CHS or ninety six one or one oh seven
• 41:31
Speaker 18: three or ninety eight seven. Yeah, we just care about
• 41:34
Speaker 18: getting the job done. And let's focus on our community.
• 41:37
Speaker 18: And and if it takes all of us, it takes
• 41:39
Speaker 18: all of us to take one of us, take one of.
• 41:41
Speaker 15: Us, man, let's just get it done.
• 41:42
Speaker 4: Just like the jingle says, we're proud to live here too.
• 41:44
  Speaker 15: There you go.
• 41:46

Speaker 18: I moved here when I was nineteen, so I'm on
• 41:54
Speaker 18: the other side of the hill, right right, Yeah, he's.
• 41:57
Speaker 14: Been here longer than he it was.
• 41:58
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 41:59
  Speaker 15: Yeah.
• 42:01
Speaker 18: When they ask me where I'm from, I got two
• 42:03
Speaker 18: states I get to choose. I'm lucky. I'm from Indiana
• 42:05
Speaker 18: and West Virginia. They say, how I spent half of
• 42:08
Speaker 18: my life here? Half of my life there was not
• 42:10
Speaker 18: even half. Yeah, I'm more on this.
• 42:11
Speaker 4: I am all right.
• 42:12
Speaker 3: What he was from the beat, Bobby Spry, I appreciate
• 42:14

• 46:50
Speaker 3: out there some more cell phone talk. As you know,
• 46:53
Speaker 3: the school systems have put together a plan for how
• 46:55
Speaker 3: to handle cell phone usage. Morgan Pemberton as a story
• 46:58
Speaker 3: post to wv metronews dot com about how Cable County
• 47:01
Speaker 3: is planning on doing things.
• 47:02
  Speaker 4: The school board.
• 47:04
Speaker 3: They are approved a resolution during the meeting yesterday afternoon.
• 47:07
Speaker 3: Of course, this all goes back to House Built two
• 47:10
Speaker 3: zero zero three that was passed this past legislative session
• 47:14
Speaker 3: went into effect in July. The superintendent there's Tim Hardesty,
• 47:17
Speaker 3: and he says the school system in Cable County already
• 47:19
Speaker 3: had a policy, but just need to tweak a bit.
• 47:21
Speaker 3: So here's how they're handling it. Quickly, in Cable County,
• 47:25
Speaker 3: phones have to be on silent, and the superintendent once
• 47:27
Speaker 3: the phone's kept in the student's locker or otherwise out
• 47:30
Speaker 3: of sight. Now, the policy says students will only be
• 47:33
Speaker 3: able to use devices for quote learning, if approved by
• 47:36
Speaker 3: a teacher or principal, and they're not to be used
• 47:39
Speaker 3: for anything considered again quoting anything other than educational purposes. Now,
• 47:44
Speaker 3: the policy goes on to say students aren't allowed to
• 47:46
Speaker 3: take photos or videos without consent, and they can't use
• 47:49
Speaker 3: cell phones in restrooms or locker rooms, and they also
• 47:53
Speaker 3: can't use so called blocked website. Now, I am no
• 47:56
Speaker 3: tech expert by any stretch of the imagination. Anyone that
• 47:59
Speaker 3: works with me will tell you that. But is it
• 48:01
Speaker 3: totally out of the question that you just search kids
• 48:04
Speaker 3: when they come to the building. I mean, may seem
• 48:06
Speaker 3: a little bit extreme, but with all due respect of
• 48:09
Speaker 3: what I've seen from some of the counties so far,
• 48:11
Speaker 3: there's so many ways around these policies, including if the
• 48:15
Speaker 3: student has permission from a teacher or school official to
• 48:17
Speaker 3: use it. And it's all going to come down to enforcement.
• 48:21
Speaker 3: And just like when we were in school on any
• 48:23
Speaker 3: number of subjects, some teachers I think are going to
• 48:26
Speaker 3: be harder than others. And what about the cell phone
• 48:28
Speaker 3: usage for the teachers, it seems to be kind of
• 48:31
Speaker 3: an issue as well. What he woulds, I'm gonna put
• 48:33
Speaker 3: you on the spot here, man, We're not always talking
• 48:36
Speaker 3: about the fun stuff. What do you just didn't want
• 48:38
Speaker 3: to leave our new studio? That's a lot is he said?
• 48:40
Speaker 3: I want to stay for a while. What do you
• 48:41
  Speaker 3: think about it. I mean, you're a parent, you're somebody
• 48:44
Speaker 3: that's plugged in. What do you think about it?
• 48:46
Speaker 15: Cell phones is part of our culture now, man.
• 48:48
Speaker 18: I think once you put too many rules and too
• 48:50
Speaker 18: many stipulations on, the teacher can say yes, and the
• 48:53
Speaker 18: teacher can say no and this and that either.
• 48:56
Speaker 15: As a hardy yes or as a hard no.
• 48:58
Speaker 18: Because how do the teacher pick what student can use
• 49:01
Speaker 18: the phone and what students can't use it?
• 49:04
  Speaker 2: Well?
• 49:04
Speaker 18: They can't I mean during this I mean they said
• 49:06
Speaker 18: a teacher can approve student.
• 49:08
Speaker 3: They can approve it if it's for a certain project.
• 49:10
Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying. You're making this thing a cell phone?
• 49:13
Speaker 3: And when we were in school, would he and TJ?
• 49:15
Speaker 3: You can bring TJ. Meadows is here as well. You know,
• 49:18
Speaker 3: you know what teachers you could get by with stuff.
• 49:20
Speaker 3: You know, there may have been a rule about no.
• 49:22
  Speaker 3: I mean, I'm a kid of the eighties. A ruled
• 49:24
Speaker 3: about no walkmans in classrooms or no chewing gum or whatever.
• 49:27
Speaker 3: You knew first period teacher was okay, whether the second
• 49:30
  Speaker 3: period teacher wasn't.
• 49:31
Speaker 15: Right, I agree at TJ. What'd you think? Man?
• 49:33
Speaker 21: So a couple of points and I've made would on this.
• 49:36
Speaker 21: You know, my kids have to have an iPad. They
• 49:38
Speaker 21: make them have an iPad, certain in kindergarten. Right, what's
• 49:41
Speaker 21: an iPad? It's just a big old cell phone.
• 49:43
Speaker 4: I mean that's all it is.
• 49:44
Speaker 21: These things I'm holding up my iPhone, they're not going anywhere.
• 49:48
Speaker 21: So better to teach the kids how to use them
• 49:50
Speaker 21: responsibly and teach them how to be productive with these
• 49:54
Speaker 21: tools than just saying we're going to ban them, because
• 49:58
Speaker 21: you're just kicking the can down the road, right at
• 50:00
Speaker 21: that point, I mean, these aren't going anywhere.
• 50:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you're right about that. What do you got kids?
• 50:05
Speaker 4: What age does a kid need a cell phone?
• 50:07
Speaker 15: We said ten at ten?
• 50:09
Speaker 18: At ten at ten, my son can get a cell phone,
• 50:11
Speaker 18: but he does have an iPad, and like TJ says,
• 50:14
Speaker 18: he can do everything.
• 50:15
Speaker 15: He can call me, he can text me.
• 50:18
Speaker 18: And we might have to go revisit this because he
• 50:20
Speaker 18: do have a iPad, and he do have a school
• 50:22
Speaker 18: issue iPad that they let you take over the summer too,
• 50:25
Speaker 18: So now he got two iPads. We got to worry
• 50:27
Speaker 18: about make sure you don't lose.
• 50:28
Speaker 3: But now the school issued iPads, I would And again,
• 50:30
Speaker 3: kids are resourceful, they can find their way around anything.
• 50:33
Speaker 3: You guys know that more than adults probably can't. There
• 50:35
Speaker 3: are certain things that are that are blocked out blocks. Yeah,
• 50:39
Speaker 3: I mean, but you know, you know, you know what
• 50:41
Speaker 3: you guys kids, you can figure that out somehow. I
• 50:43
Speaker 3: would think you gotta check your kid's iPad in their
• 50:45
Speaker 3: phone every now and then, and be at your parents, yes,
• 50:47
Speaker 3: and monitor what they're doing and have the right security protocols.
• 50:50
Speaker 3: And once they figure out how to get over one
• 50:52
Speaker 3: bridge or get over one hurdle, you figure out how
• 50:55
Speaker 3: to put another one. I mean, that's I mean, right,
• 50:57
Speaker 3: isn't that what our parents had to do? It was
• 51:00
Speaker 3: we didn't have the technology, but yeah, there was always something.
• 51:04
Speaker 15: You change our diaries also, man, my mom checked my
• 51:10
Speaker 15: diary once for me.
• 51:12
Speaker 3: I would have if you would have told me that
• 51:14
Speaker 3: Woody Woods had a diety, I probably would have said.
• 51:16
Speaker 18: I mean, I used to write in it all the
• 51:18
Speaker 18: time too, Like I had a diary. Yeah, I wrote good, Yeah,
• 51:21
Speaker 18: I want to find that.
• 51:23
Speaker 21: I thought my dad was like king of the Boone
• 51:26
Speaker 21: County Mafia because I would come home and be like
• 51:29
Speaker 21: eleven o'clock at night and he just looked at me.
• 51:31
Speaker 4: He said y'all were up on Old County roads to night. Yeah,
• 51:34
  Speaker 4: I know what.
• 51:34
Speaker 5: I know exactly what happened.
• 51:35
Speaker 21: I know who was involved, and he was like eleven
• 51:38
Speaker 21: o two and we just been there at ten forty five.
• 51:40
Speaker 4: I'm like, how in the world?
• 51:42
Speaker 3: And that would be easy to do, you know, easier
• 51:45
Speaker 3: than either text says some of these kids play on
• 51:47
Speaker 3: the school tablets during class to get rid of those
• 51:49
Speaker 3: and go back to textbooks.
• 51:51
Speaker 18: I think it's over for textbooks, good tech good I
• 51:53
Speaker 18: mean good old school analogy. But they're not teaching textbooks
• 51:57
Speaker 18: anymore like you. I mean, you don't even they don't
