- 2:19guys bear with us. My name is Patrice Grumble and i'm your sec book
- 2:23out A four three and tonight we're going to the islands, you guys.
- 2:30Yes, What the Heart Wants y'all. So I'm gonna be honest. I
- 2:36didn't read the whole book, but just some parts of this book. Me
- 2:40working at a library and reading books for over eighteen years, I talked to
- 2:46this author. I said, this is the first time I've ever seen this.
- 2:49But we're gonna talk about what that is. But we are here to
- 2:53welcome author Missus Moore. She has her book What the Heart Wants. Hello
- 3:00girl, Hello, hello, Sorry, let me make sure that this lightning
- 3:05is trying to play with me now, okay, hello, hello, Hello.
- 3:08How are you guys? How are you? How are you? I'm
- 3:14doing well, doing well. So first thing we come to see book gall
- 3:19and friends, you gotta tell us about yourself. So go ahead and tell
- 3:22us a little bit about you. Okay. I'm forty three years old.
- 3:27I'm a parent of three. I have one adult child and two teenagers,
- 3:30so soon to hopefully be an empty nester in a couple of years. I'm
- 3:37a non traditional student. I recently went back to college over the age of
- 3:42thirty, and I actually got my teacher license. So that's where some of
- 3:46the inspiration came from, which we'll talk about later for the characters in the
- 3:50book. Also, I love to travel. I love traveling. I actually
- 3:55traveled to the places that are inside of this story, so I had a
- 4:00firsthand, you know, first hand behind the scenes of those locations that I
- 4:05talk about in the story. Uh. I'd love to read. Uh love
- 4:11to watch movies, big fantasy person more more so getting into reading fantasy now.
- 4:18But I love to watch a lot of fantasy. Some of the Game
- 4:20of Thrones, Lord of Rings type of girl. So I tried that one
- 4:27episode into a God bless Her Cynthia heard was big on the Game of Thron.
- 4:33Oh yeah, you gotta look at it. You gotta look at it.
- 4:41It's it's something. It's like you gotta get into it once you watch
- 4:45maybe like a few episodes, then you started to kind of it. Really,
- 4:49it's such a long, big project that you don't get introduced to some
- 4:55of the main characters until you know a little bit down the line. But
- 4:58it's it's it's worth watching if you like that type of stuff. Like the
- 5:02first five or ten minutes somebody got their head chop off or something like that.
- 5:06Yeah, it's yeah, it's some of them episodes is like really like
- 5:11heartwrenching, but because you know, you really fall in love. You started
- 5:14to fall in love with the characters over time, so it's it's it's some
- 5:17heavy stuff in there, but yeah, you know what, you didn't turn
- 5:23me on a scandal, Okay, so scandal scandals. Give it a chance,
- 5:29Yes, you you like it? Because I actually joined the party late.
- 5:32I think I was in school when I first started watching Game of Thrones,
- 5:38and I think I caught like the first three seasons, and then I
- 5:42wasn't watching TV because I didn't have time between working and taking care of kids
- 5:45and going to school, so I wasn't watching it, and then I caught
- 5:46it maybe years later when it was at like I think the last two seasons
- 5:50and so I went back and bench watched everything and caught up and watched it
- 5:56in real time, you know, with the rest of the world. So
- 5:59oh, oh, you good. That's a lot. It is, it
- 6:03is, and well I get I will say that maybe that attests to it
- 6:08being a good show because I was able to actually sit and watch, you
- 6:11know, want to watch all of that and be caught up. So yeah,
- 6:15it's a really good it's a good show. So let's me talking about
- 6:18watches. Let's flip it to reading what wants tell us because y'all have to
- 6:28see her book cover. The cover is beautiful. It's like one of those
- 6:31ones where you see the girl with the postcard. Yay. I was like,
- 6:35oh, it's so there, it is there, it is. It's
- 6:39so pretty. And when you are describing the character, her character, that's
- 6:45sorry. I was like, yeah, that's right, but I'm not saying
- 6:50anymore. You tell us about it, You tell us about it, okay.
- 6:54So let's see I came up with I did, okay, so do
- 7:00you. I don't know. If you recall the movie h three hundred and
- 7:02sixty five days, there was a big thing on Netflix. It was like
- 7:06this mafia romance type of thing, and it had like this, yes,
- 7:12oh, oh, I gotta get my favor. Oh yeah, yeah you
- 7:15got, yeah, you got. Oh. You gotta watch this if you
- 7:16haven't seen it, it's a Actually I think it's about three movies in the
- 7:20in the series so far, and it has the guy, like the main
- 7:26character. He's like this bad guy, rich guy, take what he wants
- 7:30type of guy. And he was he was super sexy and like the whole
- 7:33world basically was going crazy over this guy at the time that these movies had
- 7:38came out, so it was during the pandemic and I was I was thinking.
- 7:42I was like, huh, well, I maybe I wanna. I'm
- 7:45not gonna write because it's it's erotica kind of. It's a rock but my
- 7:48book is not. So I didn't want to hit hit the character to be
- 7:54as broad as him, right right, not as raw as him, but
- 7:59I did want to portray I want the Italian guy. So the main character,
- 8:03he is an Italian guy. So she's black and he's Italian. So
- 8:07I did an interracial romance. But the inspiration behind him, I was just
- 8:11thinking in terms of in my mind, I was thinking about this guy and
- 8:13I was like, oh, he's so sexy. So I just I want
- 8:16to write a character to kind of, you know, with with that in
- 8:20mind, just as far as like him being Italian and things like that.
- 8:24So that's where it came from on that side. And then I said,
- 8:26well, you know what, how about we make him a single parent and
- 8:31that'll make it even more interesting, That's what Okay, See, you guys
- 8:35look about to get something in the book that I've never seen before I was
- 8:39working eighteen years reading. I have never seen a book where the main character
- 8:46was a single father at will. Yeah, not later on in the book
- 8:50and gets somebody pregnant or later on the book that's long lost child, like
- 8:56he is a single father. Yeah, never read anything like that. What
- 9:03made you that idea? Wow? Okay, So I'm I'm obviously a black
- 9:11female, and I am a single mother. And I've had friends growing up
- 9:16the other females that were single mothers. But I did have a friend or
- 9:20two that were actually single fathers, and I one in particular, he was
- 9:24in Four Girls by myself, and I remember saying, this was before I
- 9:28even had my daughter, because she came after my two boys. And I
- 9:31remember saying, like, you you know you can't do hair, you can't
- 9:33do this, Like how are you, you know, taking care of these
- 9:37kids, like really one hundred percent by yourself, Like they're your girls,
- 9:39They lived with you, you take him to school every day, you feed
- 9:43him, you know all this stuff, like he was a one hundred percent
- 9:45the soul parent of these girls. And so when I was writing a story,
- 9:48I was like, Okay, so we see single mothers all the time,
- 9:52and then you got this, you know, this stereotype about black single
- 9:56mothers, and I'm just like, well, you know what, how about
- 9:58we make him am the single parent? So and that should make the story
- 10:03interesting. So that's how I decided to make the guy the single parent very
- 10:07interesting, very interesting because, like I said, I've never seen it in
- 10:11the book before and I had to look at it, hold up this single
- 10:16father like where in the world, Like I'm so happy that they know that
- 10:22there are men out there, there are single fathers. Yes, there are
- 10:26single fathers in the world. That's especially if you got girls. Bless your
- 10:31heart, because I got an eight year old and that's all, Like I
- 10:33said, it's bless your heart. So what was one of the highlights in
- 10:39writing this book? What? What me, what me this book? Like,
- 10:46Oh, I guess this gotta be published. This is it, this
- 10:48is my book, this is my baby. What was one of the highlights
- 10:52of that? Hmm okay, So originally I wrote it, I participated in
- 11:01Nano Rimo and wrote and wrote it. So ever since I've been writing,
- 11:05you know, for the past few years. I participate in Nano Rimo in
- 11:09November every year, which is for the people that don't know, it's when
- 11:11a lot of people around the world get together and challenge themselves to write a
- 11:16fifty thousand word manuscript in thirty days. And so you have a lot of
- 11:18commodity, and you have a lot of people getting together and doing live sprints,
- 11:22which is what I do anyway, and we have I'm in part of
- 11:26groups where we do write live writing sprints. So I'm already I was already
- 11:28familiar with those, and I just I don't know, I felt like I
- 11:35always I knew it was a story that I was gonna publish when I first
- 11:37started writing it period, because I had came up with the idea for it,
- 11:41maybe like a year earlier. I was working on another book series and
- 11:46I thought about it, and I was like, okay, so what about
- 11:48cruise ships. Like I like cruise ships. I think, oh, hold
- 11:52on, I gotta stop and say this because this is so funny because I
- 11:54know when my cousin when she gets around to listen to this, she's gonna
- 11:58think about this. And last when we were on the cruise, also,
- 12:01I had saw this guy and he was a older guy. Maybe it could
- 12:05have been a Talian, I don't know, and I I kept, you
- 12:09know, I kept running to him throughout the cruise, but I never said
- 12:11anything to him. So I was kind of just like crushing on him while
- 12:13we was on the cruise and I was like, dare that guy again,
- 12:16you know it sitting down eating or something. When I'm like, there you
- 12:18go again. And she was like, oh, we'll just say something to
- 12:20him, and so I'm like, no, I'm not gonna say anything to
- 12:22him. So that kind of was the inspiration too. I kind of like,
- 12:26once I started thinking about a concept for a story, then my mind
- 12:30just started pulling from a lot of different things. And that was one of
- 12:33the things that pulled from was my memory of when I was on the cruise
- 12:35ship, like, well, what if what if I would have said something
- 12:39to him, you know, or what if the young lady in the story
- 12:41she sees the guy, what if you know, she approached him and said
- 12:43something, what would happen after that? So it was it was kind of
- 12:46like what ifs so and so it seems like in a way you were living
- 12:52like vicariously through the character. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
- 13:01yeah it was. So this female character, how did you say her name?
- 13:09Crilla Sorella? I'm saying Srilla. I just gotta call it her set
- 13:15I said, see, see she's seeing right, she's a teacher. Is
- 13:22that something that well, now I know not answered because you're saying you are
- 13:26a teacher? Why are you teaching? I mean here in Charleston County.
- 13:35Let me let me get on my soapbox real quick. Yeah, y'all wrong
- 13:39for what y'all did that superintendent in that meeting last night. But don't worry.
- 13:46These parents are out here, the mols. Y'all know what that's staying
- 13:52for, because you know, I still need a job in the morning.
- 13:54Worry because these parents are gonna show y'all and they ain't gonna lay down take
- 14:01it for anybody. But what did the superintendent Gilliam was wrong and Gilliam,
- 14:07I got you back, along with a lot of people here in Charleston County.
- 14:11Now I'm gonna walk off my step my silf. Why being a teacher?
- 14:16Like a friend of mine who was like my god sister, My mom
- 14:20was her daughter's godmother. Oh okay, she's a teacher, and then her
- 14:26sister's a teacher. And I look at so much that you teachers go through,
- 14:31and it has to be in your heart. So I would like to
- 14:33know why why teaching? And first let me look at I said, I
- 14:39give you, and I'm usually good about this, but I okay, elementary
- 14:43school, yes, thank you. I've done second grade. I've done I
- 14:52think every grade except I don't no, maybe it's maybe second grade. It's
- 15:01only grade that I didn't do because I think I did pre k kindergarten,
- 15:05first grade, classroom, third grade, in fourth and fifth because I remember
- 15:09being there with the fifth graders and just like I was just like wow,
- 15:13like these they they was my size and I'm a grown woman. So uh
- 15:18yeah, it was like it was in middle school already. Yeah, it
- 15:22was like it was in middle school. So why I've been coming to teach
- 15:24me? I guess? Okay, So I I it started, I want
- 15:28to say, maybe about when I was on that brink of twenty nine thirty
- 15:31ish. So anybody that's listening or watching this approaching twenty nine or thirty or
- 15:35has passed that threat shoulder already, you kind of have an idea of kind
- 15:39of like what happens mentally once you get to that stage, it's like it's
- 15:43not a panic, but it's almost like you start reflecting, like, Okay,
- 15:46so what have I been doing the last thirty years? What's going on?
- 15:50Where am I going? What is this? You know, it's just
- 15:52like what's going on? Like you suddenly this old, older person in half
- 15:56of your life is gone, which is not but it's just something that we
- 16:00go through. And I was just like I was sitting back in actually my
- 16:06my son, my older son that's an adult, his father had passed away,
- 16:10and so I was just thinking, like we're young, like we just
- 16:15s just pushing over thirty. If if I left, if that was me,
- 16:19if I left here today or tomorrow, Like, did I do anything
- 16:23that I really wanted to do as an adult? Did I do any of
- 16:26the things I envisioned, you know for myself as a kid? And so
- 16:30teaching was one of those things. Going going to college was one of those
- 16:34things. Traveling. I I traveled stateside, you know, but never out
- 16:38of the country. I had never been on the airplane, had never been
- 16:42on a ship, so I did, you know, so I was I
- 16:47After that, I was like, no, I'm I'm going back to school,
- 16:49I'm gonna traveling, I'm getting on the plane, I'm doing all that
- 16:52stuff. So that's what I started doing. And the first thing I did
- 16:56was lead the job that I had been at for maybe like fifteen years,
- 17:00and and I was like, yeah, I had when I got another job,
- 17:03which I had already said, I'm not taking this job, I'm gonna
- 17:06take it seriously because I'm ana work. I'm gonna show up and work,
- 17:07but it's not gonna be long term because I'm going to school. And so
- 17:11that's what I did. My my son was a teenager at the time,
- 17:15so he was old enough for me to start taking some classes at night and
- 17:18you know, and I was still working. So that's what I did.
- 17:22So the college thing and the teaching thing, and the writing thing, this
- 17:26was these were all things that I, you know, always wanted to do.
- 17:30The writing was something I always did. And then the traveling and the
- 17:33teaching was something I wanted to do. So even if I didn't continue to
- 17:36be a teacher, I still wanted to have that experience to get in the
- 17:40classroom with the kids, you know. So yeah, it was like you
- 17:42made to do what to do? All right? Older people forty three and
- 17:48other Yeah, because that's me. I'm I'm forty three. That's exactly my
- 17:52age. You know, I'm forty three, So I'm I'm I'm happy.
- 17:56You know, people might not want to tell people the age, but I'm
- 17:59happy because I know a lot of people that didn't make it to see twenty
- 18:00and twenty five and thirty and stuff like that. So I'm great, great
- 18:07about to take commercial real quick. And y'all when we come back to the
- 18:10second half, y'all know I like to have extra try and get to know
- 18:12more about mothers more. So we're gonna take a break and it's more we'll
- 18:17be back to chat. Okay, more chats more. Last one I'm talking

- 19:55I wash abud wash mine. Sorry, I was getting me too,
- 20:15me too, that's my podcast. Yes, I get her candle. What
- 20:27don't you prefer? I mean, so we're going on a library. We
- 20:33see a lot of print okay, and we see a lot of e books.
- 20:36Okay. I am half and half and now I'm about to really go
- 20:41deep diving into the audio book world. So what do you prefer? Do
- 20:47you want to venture each one or do you just want to stay printy book?
- 20:52You know? That's a good question because you me and you are so
- 20:56much alike with the same age. You just said the same thing, like
- 20:59it's like we want to same wave. I I okay. I love print
- 21:03books because I guess because I'm old school and we're so used to we we
- 21:06we've been reading since before it was e readers, so we have that luxury
- 21:10that we were introduced to print books. First. I love print books.
- 21:15I do, but we read so much and at the rate that books are
- 21:19released now, we we were, we're in the bench phase, you know,
- 21:23like we binge watched shows, we bene watched movies, we bene everything,
- 21:26so we bene books. So I can't. I don't have a library.
- 21:30I don't have space to put a thousand books, you know what I'm
- 21:33saying in my house. So as far as the e books is more convenient.
- 21:37But if if I have to read longer books and that's three hundred plus
- 21:41pages, I p I definitely prefer print because I I can't I my eyes
- 21:47just sitting keep looking at that screen. It's something yeah, yeah, I
- 21:51can't. I get into that. But audio books, I I had a
- 21:55subscription to Audible maybe about two years ago, and once the pandemic came,
- 21:59I started read the more print and more e book and I just kind of
- 22:02pushed the audio to the side. But now I'm starting to let my computer,
- 22:06you know, like the natural reader thing, kind of read the books
- 22:07to me because it's you get to read and you get to do other stuff
- 22:11at the same time. So I'm all about saving time. So I think
- 22:15I'm gonna be moving more towards audio books too. So that's what I do.
- 22:19And when I'm at work and I wish there was somebody who wants me
- 22:22to review their audio book, please send it in the way. I want
- 22:26to do that. But I'm sitting up there and I try to use the
- 22:33computerized reading, but yeah, it sounds like this, and I just can't
- 22:38right. It sounds like it sounds like a computer. Man, I the
- 22:45computer, But I'm working in the library. We know a lot about the
- 22:52the the benefits and this card sign up month I hope y'all got. But
- 23:00they have the service at my library that's called Hoopler. Yes, okay,
- 23:04okay, grab it, run with it, okay. So many e books.
- 23:11It's it's it's the best thing for me. So if if I'm at
- 23:18work and I'm doing something and I just need a little something to take the
- 23:22silence off, right, take them or drown the noise out. I'll put
- 23:26on then in a minute. And I love it because it stops, it
- 23:29starts, and it knows everything. So that's okay, I've seen. Yeah,
- 23:36we call it the Netflix of books. It's always something new there,
- 23:41and I think that's a great way for indie authors to get their name.
- 23:45Notice. Yeah, I've started following a lot of authors because of that.
- 23:52Shouts out CCPL, thank you for so it's so many new things. It's
- 23:57it's so many new things, like the Libby like I more what more recently
- 24:02found out the last few months about Libby about you know you can put your
- 24:04e books on and so did the e books can go to the library.
- 24:07I think that's one of the programs too. Yeah, we we have a
- 24:14lot of those services. And that's why I tell people, I said,
- 24:19I tell all authors, your local library is your best friend, right,
- 24:26get that connection. Yeah, I wrote a book. I would like to
- 24:30just a book chat, not even a book signed, just a book chat
- 24:33and get your name out there. Yes, they'd be slipping on the library
- 24:38and I'm glad. I'm glad we haven't this discussion that it's you a librarian,
- 24:42Like I firmly believe God, you know, he guides me to the
- 24:45right people. Because I was just thinking last week I write children's books also,
- 24:49like I have like three children's books, and I need to go out
- 24:53to my local libraries and start there first and talk to librarians there. And
- 24:57I haven't put the fire under my yeah and get to get out and do
- 25:00it. But that's something I'd definitely been meaning to do this fall. I
- 25:03said, I definitely was gonna get out to the libraries because I know in
- 25:07my city we have about seven libraries. So we have yeah, we have
- 25:11about seven libraries. Yep, nineteen libraries. Now wow, yes, oh
- 25:19man, I would oh man, I would be I would love that city
- 25:22nineteen libraries because I was always adamant about taking my kids to the library and
- 25:26going to the library myself. I did when my kids were younger. I
- 25:30had friends and they'd be like, what you're doing, But I'm taking the
- 25:32kids to the library. They like, what you're going. When I was
- 25:33a new library open, you want to go, I'm going to the new
- 25:37library, taking the kids to the new library. What library I'm like,
- 25:38man, people spend money and invest money so that we can have these libraries
- 25:44to go in and read. If you if you can't afford to have a
- 25:47library in your house for your children, you can go to the public library.
- 25:49That's what this stuff is for. On top of that, more than
- 25:52just reading. I mean right, it's so much stuff. It's so much
- 25:56stuff. I've done so much stuff in the library. You yeah, their
- 26:00own book, You could come and make your book covers. You know what.
- 26:03I Am going to take one of those extra days that we have coming
- 26:08up, and I'm gonna talk about the benefits of a public library. Yes,
- 26:11yeah, please, I'm gonna please, because that's a big thing.
- 26:15That's a big thing too with indie authors. With a lot of indie authors
- 26:18I know and talk to, we don't have our books in the library.
- 26:22And the and the ones that do have their books in the library, it's
- 26:26like they want to charge us for a course or something like that to show
- 26:30us how they got their books in the library instead of just passing information on
- 26:33so everybody can have their books in the library. You know, I'm not
- 26:37knocking nobody hustle, but you know, I'm just saying you know I'm not
- 26:41gonna Yeah, I'm not gonna not nobody hustled. It's it's it's, it
- 26:44is what it is. But we do have to get out and do that
- 26:47groundwork ourselves too, and make those connections. Yeah, because I definitely want
- 26:51to get my books, my children, my children's books, all of them,
- 26:53but definitely the children's books in the library. You know, we're gonna,
- 26:56we're gonna exchange some emails because I got some. Okay, okay,
- 27:03we we have two more questions. So these are my fun questions. Okay,
- 27:07okay, we already did one of them. Okay, okay, So
- 27:11here's my fun question. And this one might be kind of serious. But
- 27:15the question, because it doesn't have anything to do with the book. If
- 27:18you had the power to cure one disease of your choosing, what would it
- 27:26be MS? Multiple sclerosis? Wow, I haven't heard that. Yeah,
- 27:34yeah, MS. Because my mom actually suffers from multiple sclerosis and she didn't
- 27:41find out she had it for many years. I want to say, she
- 27:45was maybe in her forties when she found out, but some of the symptoms
- 27:49that she was having it was kind of like, I don't want to say
- 27:53precursors, but it was kind of like her balance was kind of always off,
- 27:57just just little things. And then she ended up finding out later what
- 28:02it was after going to see different specialists and getting M ride, M My
- 28:06ride, and then she finally ran into a neurologist who was familiar and who
- 28:10had been treating patients for multiple sclerosis, and he was able to tell her
- 28:15what it was. She finally was able to get diagnosed. So she's been
- 28:18living with that for almost twenty years now. So yeah, how are you
- 28:22doing. Yeah, yeah, I was just on the phone with her earlier
- 28:30and her nurse because she was not being nice to her nurse. And her
- 28:33nurse is an awesome lady, so yeah, but yeah, right, but
- 28:38that's great. That's great. So we see that you have a cause behind
- 28:44you. So I love it. So we're at the end of our show
- 28:48and I always tell my authors, please telerators how they can contact you,
- 28:56get in touch with you. Go ahead and give that, give them that
- 28:59rundown. All right, So guys, it's Losanda More. My name is
