- 0:08Speaker 1: Hey, I'm Greg Sestero, and you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Leave your stupid comments in your pocket.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Movie Meltdown It's showtime.
- 0:23Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:26Speaker 3: Picture Association of America.
- 0:28Speaker 1: It is intended for mature audiences and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:33Speaker 4: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million.
- 0:37Speaker 5: Kilowatts of power.
- 1:03Speaker 6: To provide more cooling in the containment chamber.
- 1:05Speaker 7: To your stations, we have a rebound.
- 1:07Speaker 1: A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I have no bird. I have no bush. God has
- 1:12Speaker 1: taken my bird and my bush.
- 1:23Speaker 7: I liked it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: It's just fucking time consuming.
- 1:25Speaker 8: It is.
- 1:25Speaker 1: I couldn't do it and do this anymore.
- 1:28Speaker 9: I was like, one or the other.
- 1:30Speaker 1: This takes as much time too.
- 1:32Speaker 10: And that is the difference between amateur and pro, honestly,
- 1:35Speaker 10: is the amount of editing that you're willing to do.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Well, and that you... have time to do because you
- 1:41Speaker 1: have the money coming in to do it like if
- 1:44Speaker 1: you're a professional filmmaker you don't have to go to
- 1:47Speaker 1: work every day so you can devote 12 hours to
- 1:49Speaker 1: sitting in front of your computer if that's what you
- 1:51Speaker 1: choose to do for the.
- 1:52Speaker 10: Day but well the equation is and I don't know
- 1:57Speaker 10: why we're not recording this because this is.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Gold it might be on right now the equation is
- 2:04Speaker 1: what is it money time monkeys Yes. Pretty sure.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you're right.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's money, time, and monkeys.
- 2:14Speaker 9: Pick two.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Pick two. Money, time, or monkeys. Now, again, if we're
- 2:18Speaker 1: going spider, anyone you get tail action, that's an extra
- 2:22Speaker 1: prehensile action. You can make use of that. I think
- 2:25Speaker 1: definitely monkeys. So, you're definitely going to go monkeys, especially
- 2:29Speaker 1: if you got the tail that works its way in there.
- 2:32Speaker 5: But if you didn't have money and time, you could
- 2:35Speaker 5: get enough monkeys that could write Every Shakespeare novel, right?
- 2:39Speaker 11: Is that where we're going?
- 2:40Speaker 1: So you could actually exclude the monkeys altogether. You just
- 2:42Speaker 1: say money and time.
- 2:44Speaker 11: And then you just get monkeys.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Boom shakalaka, you're made. If you got enough monkeys, you'll
- 2:50Speaker 1: always get the money. That's also a possibility. If you
- 2:55Speaker 1: have time and monkeys, eventually you will.
- 2:58Speaker 9: Write the best script ever. You'll get money.
- 3:00Speaker 1: And then millions will come flowing in. Or at least
- 3:03Speaker 1: Transformers 3. 2. Two is even more offensive than three.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Is it?
- 3:09Speaker 6: It really is.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I've never seen them.
- 3:10Speaker 1: It really... I don't even... I didn't... I didn't even
- 3:13Speaker 1: make it through two. It was on, like... I think
- 3:16Speaker 1: I saw two. It was on, like, Made for Cable channel,
- 3:20Speaker 1: and it was probably edited, and they left all offensive
- 3:23Speaker 1: stuff in.
- 3:24Speaker 9: And, like, I still.
- 3:25Speaker 1: Like, it was just on someone else's house, and I
- 3:27Speaker 1: was watching it going, oh, my God. Like, this is atrocious.
- 3:30Speaker 1: How is Michael Green still standing? People like dumb stuff.
- 3:34Speaker 1: That's the world we live in.
- 3:36Speaker 11: Well, I mean, you know, if I'm going to go
- 3:38Speaker 11: see a movie, I want to see stuff blow up.
- 3:39Speaker 1: I love those stuff. I don't want something touching. Yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but see, it's different. I like that at home. It's
- 3:44Speaker 1: not just explosions because, I mean, granted, I'm with you.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I love watching things ignite. Are we on? Would you
- 3:53Speaker 1: like to officially get rolling?
- 3:55Speaker 5: Well, I was going to say, if we're on, we
- 3:58Speaker 5: can say this brings us to the point of things
- 3:59Speaker 5: that explode in movies.
- 4:01Speaker 1: And you like things that explode.
- 4:04Speaker 5: But I thought that exploding birds in Birdemic was.
- 4:08Speaker 11: A bit worse.
- 4:09Speaker 9: We haven't gotten there yet. They weren't exploding.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Oh, there were some that exploded. We'll get to that
- 4:16Speaker 1: because I have some questions about that, by the way.
- 4:18Speaker 10: My point with Transformers was that it wasn't just that
- 4:23Speaker 10: they exploded or that there were explosions.
- 4:25Speaker 1: They transformed. They transformed. but that that was not enough
- 4:33Speaker 1: to keep me engaged the fact that there were explosions
- 4:38Speaker 1: and cars transformed into robots still was not enough to
- 4:42Speaker 1: keep me engaged that is the mark of an incredibly
- 4:47Speaker 1: bad film The LaBeouf? The LaBeouf didn't do it for you?
- 4:52Speaker 1: He didn't rope you in with his LaBeoufiness?
- 4:54Speaker 9: He didn't do that in the Indiana Jones film either.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Oh God, that was terrible. In the Crystal Skull thing.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The Crystal Skull main. Yeah, yeah. He had quite a
- 5:04Speaker 1: run there.
- 5:04Speaker 5: I wish I could like fall and hit my head
- 5:06Speaker 5: in the brain, the area of my brain that would
- 5:08Speaker 5: make me forget that movie.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Just that. There's moments in it I don't hate. I'm
- 5:15Speaker 1: trying to look on the good side. There was times
- 5:17Speaker 1: when I was like, There's a little of that feeling again.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I see it. It's like it would start. I feel
- 5:24Speaker 1: like it had a good start. I feel like they
- 5:26Speaker 1: went too far with it. Like there were Nazis and
- 5:29Speaker 1: there was a chase scene.
- 5:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:31Speaker 9: And there was like a rope. Rope whip.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Rope i think if they didn't if they didn't deliver
- 5:40Speaker 1: on that like if because everybody went oh fucking aliens
- 5:43Speaker 1: so i'm like what if we just got that tease
- 5:46Speaker 1: at the beginning and then that was it like we
- 5:49Speaker 1: get to the him running around trying to get a
- 5:51Speaker 1: box out of this warehouse or something and in the
- 5:53Speaker 1: end we pull back and it's area 51 you're like
- 5:56Speaker 1: oh shit and he was involved in area 51 and
- 5:58Speaker 1: like that's it They never expand on it, like nothing
- 6:01Speaker 1: else ever comes of it, and there aren't any other
- 6:03Speaker 1: weird alien tie-ins.
- 6:05Speaker 11: So then what would the third one have been about?
- 6:07Speaker 1: The third one, well, I mean, if you think about it,
- 6:09Speaker 1: with the exception, those first two, the stuff that goes
- 6:12Speaker 1: on in that little pre-credit teaser is entirely different than
- 6:16Speaker 1: the rest of the plot. The third one has its
- 6:18Speaker 1: weird flashback, and we get young Indy because we want
- 6:21Speaker 1: that to tie in later. But those first two, it's
- 6:23Speaker 1: like an entirely different adventure we come in on. We
- 6:26Speaker 1: kind of watch the end of it, and then we're like... Oh,
- 6:28Speaker 1: and now on to this new thing. So it's like,
- 6:31Speaker 1: why would four have not been okay to do that? So,
- 6:34Speaker 1: I mean, I think it would be interesting if we
- 6:35Speaker 1: just went a little bit of an alien tease and
- 6:38Speaker 1: then be like, but we don't.
- 6:39Speaker 9: Know what was going on. Why don't we rewrite the
- 6:43Speaker 9: fourth Indiana Jones film?
- 6:44Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, what would have been your fourth?
- 6:45Speaker 1: We can do that. Where would you have.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Wanted to see it go? Like, there's a whole Spear
- 6:52Speaker 5: of Destiny, but by that time it's the 60s.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Spear of Destiny, right. You're getting into these Christian... It
- 6:58Speaker 1: was always kind of Christian-y, though. I mean, two out
- 7:00Speaker 1: of three are Christian things he's looking for. Well, that
- 7:03Speaker 1: was the thing. And those two were the successful ones.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The second one... It's pretty damn fun. It's ridiculous, but
- 7:11Speaker 1: it's pretty damn fun. Ridiculous, yes. It's very ridiculous.
- 7:13Speaker 8: That is true.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Because that's the thing. People bitch about the fourth one
- 7:16Speaker 1: because all these crazy over-the-top things.
- 7:18Speaker 11: But Temple of Doom was totally over-the-top.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Why couldn't you revisit the Ark of the Covenant at
- 7:24Speaker 1: Area 51? And it ignites a whole... So the aliens
- 7:30Speaker 1: brought us the Ten Commandments, and then that's going to
- 7:33Speaker 1: piss off some religious fanatics. There you go.
- 7:35Speaker 9: There you have it. God is an alien.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Oh my lord, what did you just say? A lady alien.
- 7:41Speaker 9: Ooh, that's really going to piss people off.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Pushing the envelope.
- 7:45Speaker 11: Yeah, I don't know.
- 7:46Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 7:46Speaker 11: Where would you go with it?
- 7:48Speaker 1: The thing is, they had so many other good stories
- 7:51Speaker 1: already out there that I don't know them all. I
- 7:53Speaker 1: don't know that they pulled from any of them. I'm
- 7:55Speaker 1: assuming that was all original. But like, I remember as
- 7:58Speaker 1: a kid, I got right on board with the Marvel
- 8:00Speaker 1: run of comics. And like, there were some really cool
- 8:03Speaker 1: stories in those. And I'm like, I didn't.
- 8:06Speaker 11: Even know there were Indiana Jones comics, really.
- 8:08Speaker 9: Yeah, like after Raiders.
- 8:09Speaker 1: Like early on, they just immediately went, this works. All right,
- 8:13Speaker 1: so Marvel picked them up and they did a whole...
- 8:15Speaker 1: Several years worth of stories.
- 8:17Speaker 6: That's pretty cool.
- 8:18Speaker 9: I actually like to read those. Why did they wrangle
- 8:19Speaker 9: in those writers?
- 8:20Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 9: I'm like, they're right there.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Storyboarded for you already. Just make these movies.
- 8:25Speaker 9: George Lucas had them all killed.
- 8:26Speaker 1: Probably. He's like, I'm busy with my room full of
- 8:30Speaker 1: monkeys making this other screenplay. Don't you worry. It's going
- 8:33Speaker 1: to have aliens.
- 8:34Speaker 9: Monkeys plus money equals victory.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It'd be great. It'd equal Star Wars. The prequels. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: the prequels. Let me be clear here. Just the prequels.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Just the prequels. Horse Moments in special edition.
- 8:46Speaker 11: You know, so we went to.
- 8:47Speaker 1: See Rogue One.
- 8:48Speaker 12: All right.
- 8:49Speaker 5: And I begrudgingly went because I feel like X-Files, I've
- 8:54Speaker 5: been burned so many times that I was like, don't care.
- 8:56Speaker 11: Don't care.
- 8:57Speaker 1: The second movie wasn't their fault, man.
- 9:00Speaker 5: So.
- 9:01Speaker 1: I only heard that recently.
- 9:03Speaker 5: I actually thought it was really phenomenal and loved it.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I did too. Rogue One. We're back on Rogue One, right?
- 9:12Speaker 11: Yeah, I liked Rogue One. We didn't get to talk
- 9:14Speaker 11: about this yet.
- 9:15Speaker 1: We didn't. You weren't there at the special Rogue One
- 9:19Speaker 1: holiday event that we had. It was an event.
- 9:22Speaker 5: Did you like it?
- 9:23Speaker 1: I mean, what did you think?
- 9:24Speaker 9: I liked it.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Everybody died.
- 9:25Speaker 9: Spoiler alert.
- 9:26Speaker 1: Yeah, spoiler alert. Spoiler alert. You ruined it now.
- 9:29Speaker 5: Everybody died.
- 9:29Speaker 9: I actually just revisited it.
- 9:32Speaker 1: I'd like to. I thought it was good.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I mean, it's amazing because it's so its own thing,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and it's so... not part of the series so it
- 9:43Speaker 1: can do its own thing and can bring in its
- 9:44Speaker 1: own characters it can kill people if it wants like
- 9:47Speaker 1: you can't really do that like one through three you
- 9:49Speaker 1: couldn't do that like gee i wonder if obi-wan's gonna
- 9:51Speaker 1: die in this scene no guess what he's not he's
- 9:54Speaker 1: in three more movies like all right maybe one but
- 9:57Speaker 1: like we know where he turns up later so it's
- 10:00Speaker 1: like there's a lot of the like tension that's not
- 10:03Speaker 1: there in one through three because several of those characters
- 10:06Speaker 1: we know what happens to so Rogue One it's like
- 10:09Speaker 1: you really don't know what's gonna happen and guess what
- 10:12Speaker 1: happens so like it's kind of amazing that they have
- 10:15Speaker 1: that kind of freedom and they're that they're that detached
- 10:17Speaker 1: from the series and while on the other hand and
- 10:21Speaker 1: sort of the backside of the same hand it is
- 10:24Speaker 1: so jammed in the middle of episode four it's amazing
- 10:28Speaker 1: like the fact that so many tie-ins and so many
- 10:32Speaker 1: like and a few hours later this happens called episode
- 10:35Speaker 1: four like it's so directly connected and yet It's so
- 10:40Speaker 1: its own thing. It's kind of amazing.
- 10:42Speaker 11: Which I thought was totally genius.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I thought they did a phenomenal job. It's kind of
- 10:45Speaker 1: amazing that they made all that work. Yeah, it was
- 10:47Speaker 1: the folks behind the curtain making episode four, five, and
- 10:52Speaker 1: six occur. Yeah. Because you always wonder. A total tragedy.
- 10:56Speaker 5: Yeah, from the time when we were kids, because we're old.
- 10:59Speaker 5: And you sit down and you see that ship pass
- 11:01Speaker 5: overhead in the scroll.
- 11:03Speaker 1: And you're like, what happened?
- 11:05Speaker 11: How did we get here? And then to realize.
- 11:08Speaker 1: You had to put all your faith and trust in
- 11:10Speaker 1: the scroll.
- 11:11Speaker 11: Right, you did.
- 11:11Speaker 1: It told me all I need to know.
- 11:13Speaker 11: But then to realize as a.
- 11:14Speaker 5: Grown-up, which it was pretty cool to realize that it
- 11:16Speaker 5: was hours later that that's where it picks up.
- 11:20Speaker 11: Because in your head.
- 11:21Speaker 5: You're like, was it a month?
- 11:21Speaker 1: Was it a week? Was it a couple days?
- 11:23Speaker 11: But really it was hours later.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It had to be pretty quick because Darth leaves to
- 11:27Speaker 1: go get that ship that he ends up on. Yeah.
- 11:29Speaker 1: That's pretty cool. People died. I did bring this up
- 11:33Speaker 1: on the special holiday fun that we had, and I
- 11:36Speaker 1: want to get your opinion on it. Does it make
- 11:40Speaker 1: it a little less of a thing at the end
- 11:43Speaker 1: of episode four now that we already saw all this
- 11:46Speaker 1: other stuff that happened the day before?
- 11:48Speaker 9: Like, all these other peoples.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Like, I was watching it again this past week, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: I'm like, that entire giant space battle at the end
- 11:55Speaker 1: of Rogue One... it's not really less impressive than what's
- 11:59Speaker 1: in episode four. So I'm like, does that take away
- 12:02Speaker 1: from the amazing fanfare that was episode four? Now that like,
- 12:06Speaker 1: we know the day before all these other people died
- 12:08Speaker 1: to make this happen.
- 12:09Speaker 11: Like they're terrible, tragic.
- 12:11Speaker 1: All this.
- 12:11Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 1: This is amazing. And that's the thing. I was like the,
- 12:14Speaker 1: the fact that they enter that, um, once again, the, the,
- 12:18Speaker 1: what the hell is that? The hammerhead Corvette. that scene
- 12:21Speaker 1: is so amazing i'm like well now you've also come
- 12:24Speaker 1: up with the idea that like why didn't we do
- 12:25Speaker 1: that again the next day why were we letting those
- 12:28Speaker 1: ships kick our ass the following day did we break
- 12:31Speaker 1: our hammerhead corvette like i don't know i was just
- 12:33Speaker 1: like but that scene is so amazing that then watching
- 12:36Speaker 1: it the next day you're like oh well we just
- 12:40Speaker 1: had that other cool thing happen too you know like
- 12:42Speaker 1: does it take away a little bit from what goes
- 12:44Speaker 1: on at the end of episode four Well, yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 12:48Speaker 11: And I mean, you know.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Take that, George Lucas. We just fucked up your movie.
- 12:52Speaker 6: It does.
- 12:53Speaker 5: And like her whole, you know, the tragedy of losing
- 12:56Speaker 5: her father or whatever. It's kind of like, as a woman,
- 12:59Speaker 5: you know, that was more poignant to me than Luke
- 13:01Speaker 5: whining about his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I like Luke. I've come full circle. I think Luke's
- 13:07Speaker 1: kind of.
- 13:07Speaker 5: A badass character. Actually, Luke is pretty cool now. Now,
- 13:09Speaker 5: in the new ones, that was my favorite part of whatever.
- 13:11Speaker 11: See, I didn't like it as much. What's the other one?
- 13:14Speaker 1: Episode 7?
- 13:15Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 13:15Speaker 1: The Force Awakens? The Force Awakens.
- 13:17Speaker 11: I'm okay with it. It was pretty good.
- 13:19Speaker 1: See, my take was, again, on that episode, I was like,
- 13:22Speaker 1: I feel like I'm probably going to revisit Force Awakens
- 13:24Speaker 1: more because I think it's more fun. I think those
- 13:28Speaker 1: two are great. Their new characters are great characters. I
- 13:31Speaker 1: love the way they work together. I'm probably going to
- 13:34Speaker 1: want to revisit that more where Rogue One is a
- 13:37Speaker 1: good movie.
- 13:39Speaker 9: But it's pretty grim.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Even in the beginning.
- 13:41Speaker 9: I have a feeling, though, that Force Awakens.
- 13:45Speaker 10: Will be more interesting in context with the one that's
- 13:48Speaker 10: coming out this december.
- 13:50Speaker 5: But it did i'm with you it brought me full
- 13:53Speaker 5: circle like thinking luke was pretty cool again i'm like
- 13:55Speaker 5: luke's kind of.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Well luke's gonna be even cooler yeah i think in
- 13:58Speaker 1: general like it was one of those it got fun
- 14:01Speaker 1: to kind of it got popular to kind of make
- 14:03Speaker 1: fun of his whininess especially in that first movie which
- 14:05Speaker 1: he is i'll give you but at the same time
- 14:07Speaker 1: he's just at the same time like he's also like
- 14:11Speaker 1: this nobody kid from a desert planet that within the
- 14:14Speaker 1: span of because time has no meaning in the star
- 14:16Speaker 1: wars universe so we really don't know what the.
- 14:18Speaker 5: Until well until now because now we start to have
- 14:21Speaker 5: like well that one.
- 14:22Speaker 1: But i'm saying like the stuff that goes on like
- 14:24Speaker 1: when they get on a ship how long is it
- 14:26Speaker 1: we don't ever really know like is it really the
- 14:30Speaker 1: two minutes that we spent on this other scene on
- 14:32Speaker 1: the death star or is it been two weeks you
- 14:35Speaker 1: know it's like You can't tell when you watch Star
- 14:37Speaker 1: Wars what the time periods in between scene to scene are.
- 14:40Speaker 1: Time is space. Yeah, I mean, like, so... You know what?
- 14:44Speaker 5: We're all a little short for stormtroopers here.
- 14:47Speaker 1: The hell you say? Just saying. I've been hanging by
- 14:50Speaker 1: my ankles for weeks.
- 14:51Speaker 9: I'm going to make it.
- 14:52Speaker 1: You just wait. Except for that one guy that hit
- 14:53Speaker 1: his head. Then you'll be glad you're a little short.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Does anybody want a cup of coffee? I hate to interrupt.
- 15:00Speaker 9: Let's take a coffee break right now.
- 15:03Speaker 13: In the mood for hot coffee? When you are, nothing
- 15:06Speaker 13: else will satisfy. Coffee has a flavor, an aroma, a
- 15:10Speaker 13: deep-down satisfying goodness all its own. And our coffee has
- 15:14Speaker 13: something extra, the care with which we brew and serve it.
- 15:17Speaker 13: You'll enjoy the show more while you're enjoying steaming hot coffee.
- 15:20Speaker 13: Come and get yours now.
- 15:22Speaker 1: That's not the appropriate area.
- 15:23Speaker 6: No, it's not.
- 15:25Speaker 1: It's not recommended. Just stick it in the sink.
- 15:28Speaker 9: Now it's touched plastic.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't think so. That's That's carcinogenic.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I can't use that. It's BAP-free.
- 15:37Speaker 9: But it's loaded with.
- 15:39Speaker 1: BAPs. BAPs?
- 15:42Speaker 8: BAPs.
- 15:43Speaker 1: Like Black American Princesses? Your favorite movie? Are you naming
- 15:49Speaker 1: your favorite movie of all time? BAPs? I knew it.
- 15:54Speaker 1: and we're.
- 16:05Speaker 14: Back thanks for hanging around yeah where were we star wars.
- 16:17Speaker 1: Probably introducing ourselves uh yeah yeah yeah what's up and
- 16:21Speaker 1: welcome to movie meltdown i am brian Joining me this
- 16:24Speaker 1: week are.
- 16:27Speaker 5: You go first.
- 16:27Speaker 1: What is my name?
- 16:28Speaker 5: Paul.
- 16:29Speaker 9: Paul.
- 16:29Speaker 1: I'm Paul. I'm Gina.
- 16:32Speaker 6: All right.
- 16:33Speaker 1: And you've... Technically, you've both been on the show before.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Have I been on the show before? I was thinking
- 16:37Speaker 1: today you were as well. Oh, I have. It took.
- 16:40Speaker 9: You have?
- 16:41Speaker 1: I have photo evidence that I think you took. I
- 16:43Speaker 1: think you selfie'd it. Anyway.
- 16:45Speaker 11: I'm so old it was probably the first selfie.
- 16:48Speaker 1: No, you're not Thelma and or Louise. Somebody back me
- 16:52Speaker 1: up on that. Is that the first time we see
- 16:53Speaker 1: a selfie in cinema?
- 16:55Speaker 2: In something?
- 16:56Speaker 5: Thelma and Louise?
- 16:57Speaker 1: No, surely not. Well, I'm trying to think, though.
- 17:01Speaker 8: No.
- 17:02Speaker 1: We're sidebar here, but when did we first see someone
- 17:06Speaker 1: take a picture of themselves, specifically, I guess, in a movie?
- 17:09Speaker 1: Because that's the first time I kind of knee-jerk remember
- 17:13Speaker 1: seeing it.
- 17:13Speaker 9: Can you Google box that? So Susan Sarandon might.
- 17:19Speaker 5: Well, I was really going to work on my public
- 17:22Speaker 5: radio voice for this tonight.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody likes that. I really wanted to have a
- 17:24Speaker 1: public radio voice. Public radio is useless. Podcast is where
- 17:27Speaker 1: it's at, man. So anyway, you have been because it
- 17:30Speaker 1: was the same weekend. Because all those other weirdos you
- 17:33Speaker 1: used to hang out with have been on the show
- 17:35Speaker 1: a lot. But the only time you crossed over, Paul...
- 17:38Speaker 1: was when you were laying on the floor in the
- 17:40Speaker 1: middle of Winterfest. Oh, yeah, and he fell asleep. Actually,
- 17:44Speaker 1: that's the cover shot of that episode is you on
- 17:46Speaker 1: the floor going, no, no more. You know, I thought
- 17:51Speaker 1: he was dead.
- 17:51Speaker 2: I'm not surprised.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I thought I had lost my husband. No, he was
- 17:53Speaker 1: babbling at that point. The babble came full effect at
- 17:56Speaker 1: that point. There was a point where.
- 17:58Speaker 5: He wouldn't budge, and I thought I was going to
- 18:00Speaker 5: leave with a Cylon that would.
- 18:02Speaker 1: Be replacing you.
- 18:03Speaker 6: So, whoo.
- 18:04Speaker 9: If you go back.
- 18:05Speaker 5: An owl's Cylon.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Dedicated listeners. If you want to go back about three
- 18:10Speaker 1: years now, I think it is.
- 18:12Speaker 11: Was I on that one?
- 18:13Speaker 1: And you were not on that one. But that same weekend,
- 18:15Speaker 1: we did many episodes with different guests. And one of them,
- 18:18Speaker 1: there's a segment. that some crackhead was hanging out at
- 18:21Speaker 1: the table, and I'm like, here, hold this mic. So
- 18:23Speaker 1: there's a good segment of you and I babbling on
- 18:26Speaker 1: about movies and some sort of nonsense.
- 18:28Speaker 5: You know, we always end up babbling about movies.
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's why I started this show.
- 18:32Speaker 5: I know.
- 18:32Speaker 1: That's what I do anyway.
- 18:34Speaker 9: He directs all conversation towards movies.
- 18:36Speaker 1: But I kind of do that in the real world.
- 18:38Speaker 9: Like, it's not the show.
- 18:39Speaker 1: It's a conspiracy.
- 18:40Speaker 9: I just made it the show because I was already
- 18:42Speaker 9: doing it anyway.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Like, as a grown-up. Well, that's smart.
- 18:44Speaker 9: You're a tax business person.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Functional, if nothing else. Taxes.
- 18:48Speaker 11: It goes back to taxes.
- 18:50Speaker 5: So, yeah, like, I realize as a grown-up that I
- 18:52Speaker 5: probably shouldn't think there's a Simpsons quote for everything. So
- 18:55Speaker 5: I've really been able to, like, tune that in, you know,
- 18:58Speaker 5: dial it back, but I still in my head think
- 19:00Speaker 5: there's a Simpsons quote for everything.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You're probably right. I mean, it's been on for, like,
- 19:04Speaker 1: 35 years. Yeah, it's kind of true. It also works
- 19:07Speaker 1: with Seinfeld.
- 19:08Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 19:10Speaker 5: Yeah, but the Simpsons ones are usually more charming.
- 19:12Speaker 1: I mean, if you're going to, but those are like
- 19:14Speaker 1: TV people. So if we're bringing it back to movies,
- 19:17Speaker 1: you can always work in like a Yoda quote for everything.
- 19:19Speaker 5: There's clinking glasses.
- 19:22Speaker 3: Yes.
- 19:23Speaker 1: But anyway. Anyway. You have both been on the show before,
- 19:26Speaker 1: but this is your first official like co-hosting segment. So,
- 19:30Speaker 1: you know. For an actual episode.
- 19:32Speaker 5: And you know, I'm totally worried that I don't have
- 19:34Speaker 5: enough things to say.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Oh, that's bullshit. I know you. You always have shit
- 19:38Speaker 1: to say. I'm a wallflower. I know her too.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 19:40Speaker 1: I'm married to her and I know that she has
- 19:42Speaker 1: enough things to say. I tried to talk you out
- 19:45Speaker 1: of it, but you didn't listen. I've known both of
- 19:48Speaker 1: you for quite a while. I've known... Paul in passing
- 19:50Speaker 1: for more years than I want to think about, actually.
- 19:53Speaker 1: That's true. Really? It's a long time. This is actually
- 19:56Speaker 1: not the first time I've been to your home. We
- 19:58Speaker 1: are recording live from Paul and Gina's house. Kitchen. But no,
- 20:03Speaker 1: a long time ago, I went to an apartment. I
- 20:07Speaker 1: remember boat nail art. You had boat nail art? Like
- 20:12Speaker 1: ships made out of nails.
- 20:16Speaker 5: String and nails?
- 20:16Speaker 1: I knew it. I knew I was not delusional.
- 20:18Speaker 11: Cappy Moeller.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I did.
- 20:20Speaker 11: What happened to him?
- 20:21Speaker 7: Oh, I don't know.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Wow. I don't know.
- 20:25Speaker 9: I think I found that at a yard sale, and
- 20:27Speaker 9: I was like, I must have that.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It seemed fitting, actually. Yeah. Well, that's how they referred
- 20:34Speaker 1: to me in the past, was Cappy Moeller. That's... It's
- 20:39Speaker 1: all come full circle today. Aye, aye, Cappy Moeller. Cappy Moeller.
- 20:43Speaker 1: It's been a long damn time.
- 20:44Speaker 5: Well, that's crazy.
- 20:46Speaker 9: And you've been around for years.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't even.
- 20:49Speaker 11: Know how I met you, to tell you the truth.
- 20:51Speaker 1: I can't remember. I think I was trying to figure
- 20:54Speaker 1: out who was doing that weird art that I liked.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I was like, who is this weirdo chick that's doing
- 20:59Speaker 1: these art projects? And it was, I believe, the first
- 21:03Speaker 1: time I saw your art that led to that was
- 21:05Speaker 1: the same show that you met Paul at. I was there.
- 21:10Speaker 1: We were all in the same place at the same time. Seriously?
- 21:14Speaker 1: Pretty amazing, isn't it?
- 21:15Speaker 5: You know, there's a photographer in town that swears up
- 21:20Speaker 5: and down he introduced us because we were standing together talking.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Well, that's not true.
- 21:24Speaker 5: He does.
- 21:24Speaker 9: I thought we blamed Ben for all this bullshit. Yeah,
- 21:26Speaker 9: I mean, that's... I blame most things on Ben.
- 21:28Speaker 7: It's okay.
- 21:28Speaker 5: But it's funny because the guy was like, why I
- 21:31Speaker 5: introduced you two? Even though we had just met, but
- 21:34Speaker 5: we were standing talking to one another and then he
- 21:36Speaker 5: was like... Paul, do you know Gina?
- 21:38Speaker 6: Do you know Paul?
- 21:38Speaker 5: So he thought he introduced us.
- 21:40Speaker 1: He thought he did. Yeah, I let him have that.
- 21:42Speaker 1: He didn't actually do it.
- 21:43Speaker 5: You know, 12 years later.
- 21:44Speaker 1: But I probably, like, I was probably there and, like, accidentally, like,
- 21:51Speaker 1: shoved you into this person and, like, domino effect and
- 21:54Speaker 1: then this all happened and you came together.
- 21:55Speaker 5: That's crazy.
- 21:56Speaker 1: So. There you go.
- 21:57Speaker 11: So it's been a while.
- 21:58Speaker 1: But I'll still blame Ben for everything. It's okay.
- 22:01Speaker 10: I think, yeah, Ben and I actually moved alcohol from
- 22:04Speaker 10: downstairs to upstairs so that we could get free alcohol.
- 22:08Speaker 1: That sounds like those shows. I'm not naming those shows,
- 22:11Speaker 1: but those shows were mostly about alcohol. Mostly about alcohol.
- 22:14Speaker 9: A little bit of art.
- 22:15Speaker 1: Mostly about alcohol.
- 22:17Speaker 5: And occasionally a stripper.
- 22:18Speaker 9: Yeah, there was some fire involved too, I think.
- 22:21Speaker 1: Yep, fire.
- 22:22Speaker 5: I don't think there were any strippers.
- 22:23Speaker 1: This is why I started my own shows at that point.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I was like, I don't know what's going on here.
- 22:28Speaker 1: I'm going to start my own, and then I think
- 22:30Speaker 1: I recruited you into it. So this is how these
- 22:32Speaker 1: things fell into place.
- 22:33Speaker 11: You had good shows.
- 22:33Speaker 9: You put good shows on.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah, it's my public radio voice.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Those were good shows, yeah. Weirdo artist. If you have
- 22:39Speaker 1: any questions about that, you can get those answered at
- 22:41Speaker 1: your local public library. I'm not getting any public funding,
- 22:45Speaker 1: so screw that voice. I don't have to use that
- 22:48Speaker 1: voice because nobody's giving me any tax money. Sorry, damn it.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Can we cuss?
- 22:52Speaker 9: As much as you want.
- 22:53Speaker 1: See, that's the beauty. That's right, fucking weekend.
- 22:55Speaker 9: Public radio is just.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Like, gosh darn it, I wish you'd send us some
- 22:58Speaker 1: more funds. I'm like, look, fuckers, if you don't send
- 23:01Speaker 1: me money, I'm going to die in the street.
- 23:03Speaker 5: Oh, Shazbot.
- 23:04Speaker 1: That's true. Just like Edgar Allen Poe. Mm-hmm.
- 23:07Speaker 9: That's about to happen.
- 23:08Speaker 5: He died in the street?
- 23:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I think so. And I'm not even drunk. I
- 23:12Speaker 1: drink coffee, and I'll just die in the street of
- 23:14Speaker 1: a heart attack.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Actually, you'll just get diabetes with as much sugar as
- 23:18Speaker 5: you put in it.
- 23:19Speaker 1: That's true.
- 23:20Speaker 5: I was impressed. Well.
- 23:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it'll be a slow, slow death. Your feet will
- 23:25Speaker 1: go first.
- 23:26Speaker 14: Cool.
- 23:28Speaker 1: I can still work the computer and keep making episodes. Suckers.
- 23:35Speaker 5: I'm sure we just offended someone.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Someone with diabetes. If you think that's the first time
- 23:40Speaker 1: we've offended someone on this show, you are sorely mistaken.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Diabetes is no joke.
- 23:46Speaker 8: Mmm.
- 23:47Speaker 1: After you give to the Diabetes Foundation, then send us
- 23:50Speaker 1: two bucks a month. That's all I'm going to say. Oh, man. Yeah.
- 23:55Speaker 5: So what are we talking about?
- 23:57Speaker 1: So this specific episode, now that we've done your whole
- 24:00Speaker 1: life history, this specific episode came up because last week
- 24:04Speaker 1: I ran into you anyway. In a terrible movie. We
- 24:07Speaker 1: immediately started talking about bad movies. It might have been
- 24:10Speaker 1: because we were at a bad movie. On purpose, actually.
- 24:13Speaker 5: I always turn into terrible.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Movie talk anyway. So, as we're standing in the parking
- 24:17Speaker 1: lot after that bad movie, talking about other bad movies,
- 24:19Speaker 1: I'm like, why are we not doing this on a
- 24:21Speaker 1: regular basis in front of microphones? Because that's what I
- 24:24Speaker 1: do anyway.
- 24:25Speaker 10: And that bad movie was, last weekend was Samurai Cop.
- 24:30Speaker 9: And this week it's, what are we?
- 24:34Speaker 1: Wait a minute, let me go back to Samurai Cop.
- 24:36Speaker 1: I figured you'd want to recap. I love Samurai Cop.
- 24:39Speaker 11: Like, I love it.
- 24:40Speaker 1: I do too.
- 24:42Speaker 5: I've now watched it like twice. Actually, maybe two and
- 24:44Speaker 5: a half times.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Because didn't you fall asleep? No, we've seen it three times.
- 24:48Speaker 5: It may be three. I've watched it three times and
- 24:50Speaker 5: every time it's such a joyous, life-affirming experience.
- 24:53Speaker 1: I won't go knee-deep into that one because I feel
- 24:56Speaker 1: like it's its own episode somewhere down the line. But
- 24:58Speaker 1: I will say, as I came out of the theater
- 25:01Speaker 1: that night, I'm thinking to myself, and then it reoccurred
- 25:06Speaker 1: to me earlier today as I was watching this week's movie,
- 25:09Speaker 1: You see these kind of movies, and it really makes
- 25:12Speaker 1: you appreciate even middle-of-the-road, mediocre, competent filmmaking. Even just generic
- 25:22Speaker 1: crap you see on television, like bad TV shows. At
- 25:25Speaker 1: this point, if you're to the point of being on
- 25:28Speaker 1: a network, even not one of the big three, four networks,
- 25:32Speaker 1: if you're just on TV at this point, you've probably
- 25:34Speaker 1: got basics down like, editing or dialogue or recording the
- 25:40Speaker 1: audio or any of these things that are just kind
- 25:43Speaker 1: of bait most stuff it's pretty yeah that's not fair it.
- 25:47Speaker 5: Takes a lot to make over the top look like
- 25:51Speaker 5: an oscar winner by comparison.
- 25:52Speaker 1: Yeah which is pretty competent from.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Those points of yeah it's it's edited okay it is
- 25:59Speaker 5: but it has like a plot that it stays with
- 26:03Speaker 5: that doesn't Okay, go ahead.
- 26:05Speaker 10: Well, conversely, the other side of that is that those
- 26:14Speaker 10: quote-unquote bad movies are the ones actually taking risks and
- 26:19Speaker 10: challenging the whole situation.
- 26:22Speaker 8: Oh, no.
- 26:23Speaker 1: That's true. And folks like George Lucas are not writing
- 26:26Speaker 1: great dialogue. But, and this is one, again, if we're
- 26:29Speaker 1: going back to the Lucas thing, like I've... come full
- 26:33Speaker 1: circle to the point of, like, I will totally give
- 26:35Speaker 1: him credit for, in his day, being a maverick. Like,
- 26:39Speaker 1: the shit that he did back in the 70s was, like, well, again,
- 26:44Speaker 1: if you go way back, if you're doing, like, THX,
- 26:46Speaker 1: the fact that somebody gave him money to make a
- 26:49Speaker 1: full-length version of that movie is insane. Like, at least
- 26:53Speaker 1: American Graffiti's pretty, like, normal. I can see that getting funding,
- 26:56Speaker 1: even if it wasn't Lucas-related. But, like... Even when you
- 26:58Speaker 1: get to Star Wars, nobody was making science fiction movies
- 27:02Speaker 1: like that. Certainly not on that scale. And then even
- 27:05Speaker 1: more so, when you look at the way it's structured,
- 27:08Speaker 1: it is not a normal movie. We're like 25 minutes
- 27:12Speaker 1: in before we get to humans in that movie. It's
- 27:15Speaker 1: nothing but guys in suits and robots for a good
- 27:19Speaker 1: 20 minutes. Think about that. No movie does that shit.
- 27:24Speaker 1: And we don't even hit the plot. The main plot,
- 27:26Speaker 1: when you think about episode four, is going to the
- 27:29Speaker 1: Death Star.
- 27:30Speaker 9: The team fighting it out.
- 27:32Speaker 1: It's like... halfway into the movie before we get to
- 27:35Speaker 1: that part.
- 27:35Speaker 10: I think it took Saturn 5 like 30 seconds before
- 27:39Speaker 10: it got to naked Farrah Fawcett.
- 27:40Speaker 1: It's right there. That's what we're here for, damn it.
- 27:43Speaker 1: I want to see a big, cool looking robot and
- 27:46Speaker 1: naked Farrah Fawcett. I've never seen that. There are two,
- 27:49Speaker 1: arguably three things I came to that movie to see.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Harvey Keitel and Farrah Fawcett and oh, the guy that
- 27:56Speaker 1: was in Kirk Douglas. Kirk Douglas. Yeah, I was like, wait,
- 27:59Speaker 1: I know it. Kirk Douglas.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Wow.
- 28:02Speaker 1: It's a hell of a movie.
- 28:03Speaker 9: We'll get back to that in a future week as well.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I don't know. I have not talked about that yet,
- 28:08Speaker 1: and I want to.
- 28:09Speaker 5: If I would consider this week, can I say what
- 28:11Speaker 5: movie it is?
- 28:12Speaker 1: Drum roll, please.
- 28:14Speaker 9: I'll do the whole pitch, but go ahead now.
- 28:16Speaker 1: No, you go for it.
- 28:17Speaker 5: Do it.
- 28:17Speaker 11: Let me hear you pitch.
- 28:18Speaker 1: Pitch it. It's time for Sofa Theater. So, now you've
- 28:23Speaker 1: got a big payday with a big stock option, huh? Yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 1: I earned it. All those big deals I did with NCT.
- 28:29Speaker 1: And millions of dollars of revenues and sales. Well, you've
- 28:31Speaker 1: done a great job, Rod.
- 28:33Speaker 12: Meet Rod.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Hi.
- 28:35Speaker 13: A young software salesman on his way to achieving his
- 28:38Speaker 13: Silicon Valley dream.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I'm thinking about opening up a green tech company.
- 28:42Speaker 6: Really?
- 28:43Speaker 3: Meet Natalie, a beautiful young fashion model driven by passion.
- 28:48Speaker 1: I remember you now. You were my English class.
- 28:50Speaker 5: I was?
- 28:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 28:51Speaker 5: Yeah. So how come you never made a pass at
- 28:54Speaker 5: me in school? Throw true love into the equation and
- 28:57Speaker 5: anything is possible.
- 28:59Speaker 1: I was wondering if we can keep in contact.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Sure.
- 29:07Speaker 1: How big was the sale? One million dollars.
- 29:12Speaker 16: In other news today, the population of polar bears is
- 29:16Speaker 16: declining rapidly.
- 29:17Speaker 8: Hi, my name is Jerry Owens.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I'm from Solar Power Accessories.
- 29:21Speaker 16: This morning, flocks of seagulls and crows were found dead
- 29:24Speaker 16: in downtown San Jose and along Highway 101.
- 29:27Speaker 17: Hey, I thought I told you to stand back.
- 29:30Speaker 1: These birds are contaminated.
- 29:33Speaker 16: The crows and seagulls also caused an accident on Highway 101.
- 29:37Speaker 16: Authorities are investigating the cause of their death.
- 29:40Speaker 11: Let's get out of here.
- 29:45Speaker 1: I think they're eagles.
- 29:50Speaker 8: What's going on?
- 30:10Speaker 17: I'm not worried about the black bird.
- 30:12Speaker 5: They're not the dangerous animal.
- 30:14Speaker 17: As a human species, it's a dangerous, menacing, terrifying animal.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Why would birds do something like that? I mean, why
- 30:21Speaker 1: would they just attack? I don't know. This week's Sofa
- 30:33Speaker 1: Theater feature is Birdemic, colon, Shock and Terror. Shock and Terror.
- 30:38Speaker 1: The year is 2010. The director is from the visionary
- 30:43Speaker 1: writer-director James Wynn, and the plot, according to IMDb, a
- 30:49Speaker 1: horde of mutated birds descends upon the quiet town of
- 30:52Speaker 1: Half Moon Bay, California. With the death toll rising, two
- 30:56Speaker 1: citizens manage to fight back, but will they survive Birdemic?
- 31:01Speaker 1: Spoiler alert! I'm not 100% sure you can spoil this movie,
- 31:05Speaker 1: but just in case, go watch it now. Did you
- 31:09Speaker 1: watch it? Okay, sorry about that. But now you're caught
- 31:13Speaker 1: up and you're ready to go, and we're ready to
- 31:16Speaker 1: ruin everything. So feel free now to talk about whatever
- 31:18Speaker 1: the hell you want. All right. Shock and terror. Shock
- 31:23Speaker 1: and terror. I keep wanting to shock and awe, because
- 31:26Speaker 1: I'm kind of in awe. It's like awe.
- 31:29Speaker 10: I think, Gina, you have your finger on the pulse.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Of the history of of bird no i don't you
- 31:38Speaker 1: do i mean i have a little bit but that's
- 31:41Speaker 1: almost like a side story because it i had one
- 31:44Speaker 1: approach to it when i watched it because this is
- 31:46Speaker 1: one of those like we were talking about last week
- 31:48Speaker 1: because you just watched it i knew of it from
- 31:51Speaker 1: the beginning there i saw the whole crazy fanfare that
- 31:54Speaker 1: came with it and i'm just like what the hell
- 31:56Speaker 1: is this and like i knew about it i'd seen
- 31:58Speaker 1: the special effects i'd seen little bits and pieces of
- 32:01Speaker 1: it but I never really wanted to run out and
- 32:03Speaker 1: see it. So I hadn't gotten around to it yet.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And this was like, okay, it's a good excuse to
- 32:07Speaker 1: watch it. So I watched the movie and then I
- 32:10Speaker 1: went back. I was just like, oh, they're right. This
- 32:13Speaker 1: is a bad movie. But then I went and watched
- 32:16Speaker 1: the whole little side story about James Wynn, the director,
- 32:19Speaker 1: the writer, the man who created this masterpiece. It's a
- 32:23Speaker 1: different take after that. Like it really is. If you
- 32:25Speaker 1: find out a little more about him, it's like, oh,
- 32:29Speaker 1: it does kind of change my, Really? What I want
- 32:32Speaker 1: to approach it now. I'm going to try to keep
- 32:34Speaker 1: that as a separate thing.
- 32:35Speaker 5: Well, now I'm curious because I didn't see. I've just
- 32:39Speaker 5: taken it from its straight.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I think we should discuss the movie as it is
- 32:43Speaker 1: first and then I'll get to the story about the
- 32:46Speaker 1: director afterwards. All right. So the movie opens. The movie.
- 32:51Speaker 11: Let me, let me, what was I going to say
- 32:54Speaker 11: about it?
- 32:54Speaker 6: Hang on.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I had a very valid point about it. I had
- 32:57Speaker 1: to start like, okay, wait, I need to write down
- 32:58Speaker 1: some of the things I need to address.
- 33:00Speaker 5: I like that there was a typo when he was
- 33:02Speaker 5: advertising himself.
- 33:03Speaker 1: You mean supporting casts? Casts. I'm like, how many movies
- 33:07Speaker 1: is this guy making at once right now?
- 33:09Speaker 11: A typo is always a great indication.
- 33:12Speaker 5: And also when he was promoting it, He had it, like,
- 33:15Speaker 5: whatever on his cart that said.
- 33:16Speaker 1: That's what I was just going to say. I was like,
- 33:18Speaker 1: and in his own advertising that he wrote, he spelled
- 33:23Speaker 1: it wrong.
- 33:24Speaker 11: He spelled it wrong.
- 33:25Speaker 1: So, you know, he was excited, though. I can imagine being.
- 33:28Speaker 5: Excited about releasing your own movie and you're making your sign.
- 33:31Speaker 1: A little snippet into our director, but.
- 33:32Speaker 5: Yeah, you don't, like, you know, you don't have the experience.
- 33:35Speaker 1: Of being a... Think about it. You don't go to
- 33:38Speaker 1: one of your friends and go, could you spell check
- 33:40Speaker 1: this for me? Can you look at this? Does this
- 33:41Speaker 1: look right? Does anything look horribly wrong? I'm so excited.
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm going to go put it on my car. English
- 33:45Speaker 1: may be my second language. I'm not sure. It is.
- 33:49Speaker 5: Sorry, clinking glasses was not my intention. Yeah, I mean,
- 33:53Speaker 5: the thing that I walked away with from Birdemic is
- 33:55Speaker 5: that I could take the most boring aspect of my
- 33:58Speaker 5: job and take it and then apply some other sort
- 34:01Speaker 5: of like bizarre scenario and.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Make a movie.
- 34:05Speaker 11: That's what I walked away with.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:07Speaker 5: Like most, a lot of the movie was a guy talking.
- 34:10Speaker 1: About his job. You could be a software sales person. See,
- 34:18Speaker 1: I went the other way of it. I went like, again,
- 34:22Speaker 1: I think because I had to. I was trying to
- 34:24Speaker 1: get through it. So I had to pause a few
- 34:25Speaker 1: times and be like, I'm going to go get some
- 34:27Speaker 1: chips or something. Isn't there something that I need to eat?
- 34:30Speaker 1: I need a cup of coffee.
- 34:32Speaker 14: I need.
- 34:32Speaker 1: Yeah. I had to like distract myself a few times
- 34:34Speaker 1: to be like, it's OK. It's OK.
- 34:36Speaker 9: So I get back.
- 34:37Speaker 1: So I think I paused it right about at the
- 34:39Speaker 1: halfway point, which is before we get to birds and whatnot.
- 34:43Speaker 1: So I'm just like at that point, I'm thinking to myself.
- 34:47Speaker 1: this is a lot of time spent on these losers'
- 34:49Speaker 1: love life. Like, it's a good amount of them dating.
- 34:54Speaker 1: And software sales. It's kind of soft.
- 34:56Speaker 5: I didn't pick up on the dating so much as
- 34:58Speaker 5: the bizarre software sales.
- 35:00Speaker 1: The thing is, I didn't buy the software sales. Like,
- 35:03Speaker 1: I feel like he's throwing in words that don't really
- 35:07Speaker 1: make sense. You bought the dating? But the dating, I
- 35:10Speaker 1: felt like it's, awkward as hell but i'm just describing
- 35:14Speaker 1: my dating life so i'm just like no this part
- 35:17Speaker 1: feels about right this feels normal these awkward ass sentences
- 35:21Speaker 1: of like so what do you do i'm so sorry
- 35:25Speaker 1: brian that's nice i hope that works out for.
- 35:28Speaker 18: You i want a perfect girl good for you hope
- 35:33Speaker 18: you find it this is pretty close to many a Well,
- 35:38Speaker 18: there haven't been that many.
- 35:39Speaker 11: So what do you do?
- 35:40Speaker 5: I just got hired as the Victoria's Secret model.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Super.
- 35:44Speaker 9: Supermodel.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Well, again, and I'm like, so much of it is unnatural.
- 35:49Speaker 1: And like, again, maybe it's a language barrier. But I'm
- 35:53Speaker 1: just like, the fact that it's like, if you knew
- 35:55Speaker 1: someone who was working in that, even low end of
- 35:58Speaker 1: that industry, you wouldn't be like, oh, I'm a model.
- 36:00Speaker 1: I'm a fashion. I'm a fashion mom. Like, fashion had
- 36:04Speaker 1: to be worked in there in case you were questioning.
- 36:05Speaker 5: Like, you see bad, like, 1970s... What was that artist's name?
- 36:08Speaker 1: Nagel? You know what I mean? Those paintings? Oh, every
- 36:12Speaker 1: painting slash print you saw in the background of every
- 36:16Speaker 1: 80s movie? Yes, those. Because isn't it in Samurai Cop?
- 36:20Speaker 1: Is there not one in the background of Samurai Cop? Probably.
- 36:23Speaker 1: There should be. Which falls into the 90s, actually. But
- 36:26Speaker 1: it was hanging on.
- 36:26Speaker 2: It was a.
- 36:27Speaker 1: Yeah, it's still a thing.
- 36:28Speaker 11: It was an awesome.
- 36:29Speaker 1: Look that we all wanted in our home.
- 36:30Speaker 11: Yeah, so when I hear.
- 36:31Speaker 5: Fashion model.
- 36:33Speaker 11: That's what I think.
- 36:34Speaker 9: A fashion, Victoria's Secret fashion model.
- 36:37Speaker 5: It's like, well, and then it brings me back to
- 36:39Speaker 5: the other movie that we all have to watch to
- 36:41Speaker 5: talk about, that Fateful Findings, where there's a character that says,
- 36:44Speaker 5: future episode, he says, I am the, what did he say?
- 36:50Speaker 11: Like, I am the bank.
- 36:52Speaker 5: You know, when he's like.
- 36:53Speaker 9: I am the president of the bank.
- 36:55Speaker 1: Of the bank. Are you in the bank right now?
- 37:00Speaker 1: At the national press conference, I am the president of
- 37:04Speaker 1: the bank. And I feel like that's how all the
- 37:06Speaker 1: software talk goes. It's just like, yeah, I scored my deal.
- 37:10Speaker 1: millions for me now like I'm just like it's so
- 37:13Speaker 1: awkwardly worded.
- 37:15Speaker 5: One million ten million one hundred million.
- 37:18Speaker 1: And like so like bullshit on the like cause then
- 37:21Speaker 1: like he's what can I do to get your business
- 37:23Speaker 1: today alright I'll give you 50% off I'm like dude
- 37:27Speaker 1: you are fired wherever the hell you work you don't
- 37:30Speaker 1: give somebody 50% off you're not a Garage sale? You're
- 37:34Speaker 1: selling huge deals. Millions of dollars.
- 37:38Speaker 10: I feel as though that if you worked and lived
- 37:41Speaker 10: and worked in that industry, that movie would have spoken
- 37:44Speaker 10: to you somehow.
- 37:46Speaker 9: That it would have made sense.
- 37:48Speaker 1: And you would have been like, God, this is riveting.
- 37:52Speaker 9: Oh my God, there's birds?
- 37:54Speaker 1: Except all those guys like killed themselves. There's a birdemic too.
- 37:58Speaker 1: After like two weeks at that job, they went home
- 38:00Speaker 1: in awe for themselves. I can't take this life anymore.
- 38:03Speaker 11: Yeah, what does he say? Like, I scored my big deal. Oh,
- 38:06Speaker 11: is that his friend?
- 38:07Speaker 1: Biggest deal of my career. Yeah, let's get laid. And
- 38:11Speaker 1: I got stock options. There's stock options. I think that
- 38:14Speaker 1: was a direct line, Brian. Yeah, I got stock options.
- 38:18Speaker 1: And a day not getting laid is a day wasted.
- 38:22Speaker 1: or something I'm paraphrasing a little but that guy's a
- 38:24Speaker 1: treat let me tell you yeah I think he dies
- 38:26Speaker 1: early No.
- 38:28Speaker 11: It's pretty far in.
- 38:29Speaker 1: He disappears for a long time. He disappears, period. He
- 38:32Speaker 1: doesn't die, does he? I thought he was back at
- 38:34Speaker 1: the end.
- 38:34Speaker 5: You know, I wish there was like a real deliverance
- 38:37Speaker 5: scene with him and that guy that they find in
- 38:39Speaker 5: the woods with the wig.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Deliverance?
- 38:43Speaker 11: He deserves it.
- 38:44Speaker 1: He feels like a pig and gets raped by another guy. Well,
- 38:47Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, he just deserves a gnarly.
- 38:48Speaker 1: That seems a little extreme. He's just a jerk. A
- 38:53Speaker 1: pig somewhere is upset.
- 38:54Speaker 5: I've offended a pig somewhere.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Somewhere there's a school teaching banjo that's upset with you
- 38:59Speaker 1: right now. That doesn't sound right.
- 39:01Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you know, let's say shocking things about
- 39:04Speaker 5: a terrible film.
- 39:07Speaker 1: So, all right. I'm trying to bring us back in here.
- 39:10Speaker 1: So let's just... Birdemic. Let's talk about just like by
- 39:14Speaker 1: the time we get to the restaurant. Like we're like
- 39:16Speaker 1: two minutes in and I'm like... Wait, wait. Which restaurant? Wait,
- 39:19Speaker 1: what happened? The restaurant's at the very beginning. Is it
- 39:21Speaker 1: the date? Yeah, they don't even do anything really or
- 39:24Speaker 1: we don't see anything. She kind of has a pile
- 39:26Speaker 1: of like, looks like wadded up bread on her plate
- 39:28Speaker 1: yeah when she leaves because i guess she's like no
- 39:30Speaker 1: carbs you know she's a fashion model but the i
- 39:33Speaker 1: mean everything are you talking about where he takes all
- 39:36Speaker 1: that time to drive around and then park.
- 39:40Speaker 9: God, I kind of blocked that out.
- 39:42Speaker 11: Like, the parts that you remember.
- 39:44Speaker 1: He drives around.
- 39:44Speaker 11: I thought they went to a bowling alley.
- 39:46Speaker 9: Am I misremembering?
- 39:47Speaker 1: His first 10 minutes is spent driving and parking, and
- 39:50Speaker 1: then he shows up at their restaurant. Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 9: Because remember that truck behind him?
- 39:55Speaker 1: And he's in a hot rod Mustang. That goes 20
- 39:58Speaker 1: miles an hour. It's a plug-in Mustang, so he really
- 40:01Speaker 1: can only go 20 miles an hour.
- 40:02Speaker 11: Oh, that's right, because he's like, my car's battery.
- 40:04Speaker 1: Oh, that's right, he's a hybrid.
- 40:06Speaker 11: My car runs on solar panels.
- 40:08Speaker 1: But that's a solar panel. But that explains why when
- 40:13Speaker 1: he's coming up the hill and that truck's behind him, like, oh,
- 40:16Speaker 1: my God, get out of the way. Like, there is
- 40:18Speaker 1: a truck that is just like, for the love of God,
- 40:20Speaker 1: why are you doing 20 miles an hour up this hill?
- 40:22Speaker 1: Get out of my way. Like, I can feel it
- 40:25Speaker 1: in the scene. That's the most tension in the scene.
- 40:27Speaker 5: Maybe that's the first movie shot on, what are those
- 40:30Speaker 5: cameras called that you attach to stuff?
- 40:33Speaker 1: Time lapse?
- 40:34Speaker 4: No.
- 40:35Speaker 1: It took us four years to make this scene.
- 40:39Speaker 5: You know, like, you can put them on your helmet
- 40:41Speaker 5: and crash.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Oh, GoPros.
- 40:43Speaker 5: It's probably the first movie filmed on a GoPro, just
- 40:45Speaker 5: in the driving.
- 40:46Speaker 1: I mean, once again, if they want to kick in
- 40:49Speaker 1: the licensing, because, I mean, there are, like, entire GoPro
- 40:52Speaker 1: film fests now. So, like, now it's a legit thing. Like,
- 40:56Speaker 1: it really is stuff that people do. I think that
- 40:58Speaker 1: the whole idea, though, was that, you know, his whole
- 41:03Speaker 1: shtick was.
- 41:05Speaker 10: Environmentalism, efficiency, gotta drive the hot rod at 20 miles
- 41:10Speaker 10: an hour.
- 41:11Speaker 1: I mean, in bumper-to-bumper traffic. That's the one thing. And
- 41:15Speaker 1: still get 40 miles per gallon.
- 41:18Speaker 11: But he never talks about that, does he? He should
- 41:20Speaker 11: mention it.
- 41:21Speaker 1: Like, really. But he does talk about the inconvenient truth. That's, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 1: my very subtle plug. That was, like, right off the bat, though.
- 41:29Speaker 1: That was one thing I was like, okay, I'm gonna
- 41:31Speaker 1: give our director a little credit here. I'm like, I
- 41:34Speaker 1: can see him having a little vision there. Like the
- 41:37Speaker 1: shots in the car were very, again, everyone always references amateur.
- 41:44Speaker 1: It isn't professionally done, but I think there's a creative
- 41:48Speaker 1: aspect that I'm like, I do like what he's trying
- 41:50Speaker 1: to do there. Now, the fact that I can see
- 41:51Speaker 1: the reflection of the lights the whole time and it
- 41:54Speaker 1: looks horrible isn't good, but the shots that he's trying
- 41:57Speaker 1: to do, I'm like, okay, I do see he's got
- 41:58Speaker 1: a little- Like, I totally didn't get that. Well, again,
- 42:02Speaker 1: he's totally stealing from Hitchcock. Anyway, the whole movie is.
- 42:06Speaker 1: So to me, I feel like there's so much of, like,
- 42:08Speaker 1: vertigo that's him driving around up and down those hills.
- 42:11Speaker 1: And I'm like, I see the film fan in him.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I see him, like, I want to do an establishing
- 42:16Speaker 1: thing with the credits. And I really want to, like,
- 42:18Speaker 1: I do see a little bit of movie geek in
- 42:20Speaker 1: him trying to make this. This is his baby. And
- 42:22Speaker 1: this is what he wants to do. So, like, I
- 42:24Speaker 1: see that in the credits. I feel like it's falling
- 42:26Speaker 1: short in the technical aspects. Because even then, there's, like,
- 42:29Speaker 1: moments when it's like it's just the camera's moving like
- 42:33Speaker 1: you know or he's driving way too slow or like
- 42:35Speaker 1: all of these things it takes way too long too
- 42:38Speaker 1: but i see a little ambition in that opening but.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Wouldn't you edit it better i mean you could have
- 42:42Speaker 5: i would you could have.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Done that same thing but edited and had him drive
- 42:47Speaker 1: about 40 but whatever.
- 42:49Speaker 5: I mean 20 and it was like it was like
- 42:52Speaker 5: a really like what was what is it uh oh
- 42:56Speaker 5: god what movie has that really long opening Rope. No.
- 43:02Speaker 11: Anyway. I can't think of it.
- 43:04Speaker 1: I'm useless.
- 43:05Speaker 11: But then they kind of repeat it in Get Shorty, like,
- 43:08Speaker 11: where they.
- 43:08Speaker 5: Do that long pan in, you know, and it's, like,
- 43:12Speaker 5: kind of like, it's not, I want to say, like,
- 43:14Speaker 5: dial in for nerder.
- 43:16Speaker 11: But that's not what it is. That's your life.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:21Speaker 5: It's like, you know, having a conversation with me is
- 43:23Speaker 5: like playing $ 20, 000 pyramid.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I mean, luckily my brain's kind of useless now.
- 43:27Speaker 9: And I don't remember things. So it kind of works
- 43:28Speaker 9: in the same way.
- 43:28Speaker 1: So it'll balance out my not remembering most of the stuff.
- 43:31Speaker 11: It's like something murder. Anyway, it's a black and white film.
- 43:34Speaker 11: But it's all about this long opening shot.
- 43:36Speaker 9: Well, I mean, there is a Hitchcock one. One of
- 43:38Speaker 9: his really early ones.
- 43:39Speaker 11: Yeah, but it's not Hitchcock.
- 43:40Speaker 1: But one of his really early ones starts out at
- 43:43Speaker 1: sea and starts zooming in on this house and comes
- 43:46Speaker 1: into the house. And again, he's super inspired by Hitchcock.
- 43:51Speaker 11: But this is an Orson Welles film that I can't remember.
- 43:54Speaker 1: Not Citizen Kane? No. It's Rope, I'm telling you. No,
- 43:58Speaker 1: that's Hitchcock. The Trial?
- 44:01Speaker 6: I know.
- 44:01Speaker 9: I thought you said it was The Magnificent Ambersons?
- 44:04Speaker 5: No.
- 44:05Speaker 1: The Stranger? Well, anyway.
- 44:08Speaker 5: So, anyway, yeah, I get it, but those are, like,
- 44:10Speaker 5: beautifully done, and this is, like, you're riding with your
- 44:13Speaker 5: slow-driving hands.
- 44:13Speaker 1: And it's about the editing.
- 44:14Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 44:15Speaker 10: The editing is the piece that he is in this
- 44:17Speaker 10: throughout the movie.
- 44:17Speaker 1: But those shots are not edited.
- 44:19Speaker 5: They're, like, long, unedited.
- 44:21Speaker 1: It needs to be edited. But then they need to
- 44:23Speaker 1: be edited. And that's the thing. I'll give him I
- 44:25Speaker 1: see ambition there, but then, like, that's the thing. It's
- 44:28Speaker 1: like that, you're just kind of like, well, okay, he's
- 44:29Speaker 1: getting going, whatever. Then you get to that restaurant and
- 44:32Speaker 1: you immediately see, oh shit, like the most basic breakdown
- 44:37Speaker 1: of like filmmaking of like, and this is what I
- 44:40Speaker 1: kept seeing throughout. It's not just in that scene, but
- 44:42Speaker 1: you start seeing it there. It's like shot hang time.
- 44:45Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 44:46Speaker 1: It's like an extra four beats, not even one. Like
- 44:50Speaker 1: one already starts to get uncomfortable if it's the wrong situation.
- 44:53Speaker 1: It's like, stop now. Wait, wait. Wait. Wait. Cut to
- 44:58Speaker 1: the next scene, and then they're waiting, too. They're at
- 45:00Speaker 1: the next scene going, wait, wait. Okay, start my dialogue.
- 45:03Speaker 1: So it's like every end of it is missing its mark,
- 45:07Speaker 1: and yet they're just kind of jammed together. So it's
- 45:10Speaker 1: that part that I start going, oh, no, it's failing
- 45:14Speaker 1: on the most basic levels. It's timing. Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 11: I mean, that movie could be half as long.
- 45:22Speaker 1: Well, it's all those weird edits. And like, that's one
- 45:24Speaker 1: of those like, yes, it's still going to have bad
- 45:27Speaker 1: dialogue and it's still going to have horrible effects. But
- 45:29Speaker 1: I'm like, if you just gave it to a real editor, like,
- 45:32Speaker 1: you can tighten up so many of the problems.
- 45:34Speaker 11: It could be on the sci-fi channel.
- 45:36Speaker 1: Yeah, it could. Definitely. That's the thing. Absolutely. Watching it, like,
- 45:39Speaker 1: we've talked about many bad sci-fi channel movies or... whatever
- 45:42Speaker 1: those Asylum makes those bad movies, like all of that
- 45:46Speaker 1: stuff is not that much worse than what this is here.
- 45:50Speaker 1: If you had somebody editing the basic... No, I totally agree.
- 45:53Speaker 1: clunkiness out of it like the level of dialogue isn't
- 45:57Speaker 1: really that much different than Sharknado you know it's like
- 46:00Speaker 1: it's just as schlocky as everything going on there.
- 46:03Speaker 11: But the delivery is pretty bad.
- 46:05Speaker 9: It is but what do you do for a living I.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Am a fashion model see that's what you delivered that
- 46:13Speaker 1: too quickly you needed to wait like four beats again
- 46:16Speaker 1: we'll jump ahead a little because this isn't necessarily about
- 46:19Speaker 1: the director because that's the thing I'm looking at it
- 46:21Speaker 1: going these people are acting And they were. They've been
- 46:25Speaker 1: in other things.
- 46:26Speaker 2: They are.
- 46:26Speaker 1: And that's the thing. I feel like she almost could
- 46:28Speaker 1: pull stuff off. She's trying. The guy's just a dork.
- 46:33Speaker 1: I don't know. Nothing works for him for me. I
- 46:36Speaker 1: feel like she could work in a different scenario. And
- 46:38Speaker 1: that's the thing. Once you get into it, you're like,
- 46:42Speaker 1: because they're also speaking in this weird way. And it
- 46:45Speaker 1: turns out it's kind of in his broken English. yeah
- 46:49Speaker 1: because the our writer our writer came like in the
- 46:54Speaker 1: like when vietnam ended he basically came from vietnam to
- 46:57Speaker 1: america and he's like he's he's pretty good he's got
- 47:00Speaker 1: english down but there's still a weird broken english thing
- 47:03Speaker 1: going on and he wrote it that way and from
- 47:06Speaker 1: the like the the actress is like from day one
- 47:09Speaker 1: we were like this isn't working like can we change
- 47:13Speaker 1: our dialogue he's like no that's the way it's written
- 47:15Speaker 1: say it this way like he made them say the
- 47:17Speaker 1: lines the way that he wrote them in this weird
- 47:20Speaker 1: awkward english so it makes it a million times more
- 47:24Speaker 1: awkward as they're so again i think some of them
- 47:26Speaker 1: is performance but a lot of it is him.
- 47:32Speaker 9: He nailed them.
- 47:33Speaker 1: To that to that dialogue the way that he wrote
- 47:36Speaker 1: it and that's just Binding their hands at every turn.
- 47:39Speaker 1: And here's the thing.
- 47:40Speaker 11: I don't want to do something else. I don't want
- 47:42Speaker 11: to harsh anybody for making their dream. You know what
- 47:45Speaker 11: I mean? It's like we were talking about.
- 47:46Speaker 1: And again, that's definitely where I'm going to come around
- 47:48Speaker 1: to by the end of this. Right.
- 47:50Speaker 5: What does it matter if you have terrible friends that
- 47:52Speaker 5: are terrible actors or whatever, but if you want to
- 47:54Speaker 5: make the story and make it happen and.
- 47:55Speaker 11: You can do it, everybody should.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:58Speaker 11: If you want to do that, you should.
- 47:59Speaker 5: If you want to make the world's worst album called...
- 48:02Speaker 5: space cougar then you.
- 48:04Speaker 1: Should stop outing your creative project which is why I
- 48:07Speaker 1: totally TM TM we're claiming that already we can't steal
- 48:11Speaker 1: our thing.
- 48:11Speaker 9: Because I totally support fateful findings yeah and.
- 48:13Speaker 5: That does lead me to that and like that guy
- 48:16Speaker 5: was actually hurt when people were laughing at his like
- 48:18Speaker 5: opening and it's like dude I totally get it it's
- 48:20Speaker 5: terrible but I get where you're coming from I can't
- 48:23Speaker 5: I can't hate on.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Something I mean that's my thing here it's like I
- 48:26Speaker 1: my initial reaction as the movie geek I am is
- 48:28Speaker 1: to be like no what the fuck so I still
- 48:31Speaker 1: kind of want to address that I still had all
- 48:33Speaker 1: these things that I have problems with. But, again, by
- 48:35Speaker 1: the end, I'm going to come back around to.
- 48:38Speaker 9: Do what you love.
- 48:39Speaker 1: Like, do your thing, whatever it is. Even if people
- 48:41Speaker 1: don't like it, fuck them, do it anyway.
- 48:43Speaker 9: So, again, that's why I do this every week.
- 48:47Speaker 5: But, I mean, it is kind of just a funny,
- 48:49Speaker 5: awkward thing.
- 48:50Speaker 1: It is. And it's like, yeah.
- 48:52Speaker 5: And I didn't watch whatever the... you know his backstory i.
- 48:56Speaker 9: Will recommend it to you later it's a very specific one.
- 48:59Speaker 5: Read a little bit about it and so that i
- 49:00Speaker 5: can i can get that i don't want to like
- 49:02Speaker 5: make fun of anybody for for chasing their dream but
- 49:05Speaker 5: good lord like it's got you know like there was
- 49:08Speaker 5: a lot of hitchcock where you didn't really see what
- 49:10Speaker 5: was going on right and it was still scary but
- 49:13Speaker 5: you know you didn't need exploding birds.
- 49:15Speaker 1: But the story also made sense, too. Well, the story
- 49:16Speaker 1: made sense, too. And that comes into play a lot
- 49:19Speaker 1: of times where it's just, and he wasn't a filmmaker.
- 49:22Speaker 1: He didn't spend years and years, right? He'd made a
- 49:25Speaker 1: couple of other movies before this. I'm not sure, like, two.
- 49:28Speaker 1: And I don't know how awkward they're pieced together, but
- 49:31Speaker 1: I think a lot of it is that learning basic storytelling. Oh,
- 49:34Speaker 1: and I think they're all the same thing.
- 49:36Speaker 5: Like, he's, the character in that is like some sort
- 49:39Speaker 5: of computer.
- 49:40Speaker 1: It's all, yeah. And it's all like he, cause he
- 49:43Speaker 1: kept referring to himself as like a romance thriller. Like
- 49:47Speaker 1: it wasn't a bad sci-fi movie he was trying to make.
- 49:49Speaker 1: He still considered it. That's why I referenced the romance part.
- 49:52Speaker 1: Cause to him, that's still the core of the story
- 49:56Speaker 1: is this guy and he meets the girl and it's
- 49:59Speaker 1: true love. Like even if you watch that trailer, like
- 50:01Speaker 1: it builds it up. Like it's a weird romance almost.
- 50:06Speaker 1: It's very strange how that came into play. So, again,
- 50:11Speaker 1: I feel like he genuinely buys that part of it
- 50:14Speaker 1: as the heart of the story. It's just awkwardly put together.
- 50:18Speaker 1: But I think there are key elements in the storytelling.
- 50:21Speaker 1: It's a romance driven by survival.
- 50:24Speaker 9: Yeah, which it can work.
- 50:25Speaker 1: There's a lot of movies that are built around that. Plenty.
- 50:29Speaker 1: It's just being able to competently tell the story.
- 50:32Speaker 9: Yes, he just didn't do that. He just didn't do that.
- 50:36Speaker 1: But when we get to, like, in the restaurant, like,
- 50:39Speaker 1: he just is awkwardly staring at this girl. And then, like,
- 50:43Speaker 1: chases her down the street to stop directly in front
- 50:47Speaker 1: of the State Farm ad. I'm just watching it going,
- 50:50Speaker 1: I hope they gave you money, dude. Because I'm... I'm
- 50:52Speaker 1: fine with taking money for stuff, but I'm going to
- 50:55Speaker 1: call you out for it. I'm like, if you got
- 50:57Speaker 1: a little extra money kicked in from State Farm.
- 50:59Speaker 5: His buddy who works at State Farm probably gave.
- 51:01Speaker 1: Him $ 100.
- 51:02Speaker 9: Or they went and bought you some extra Slim Jims.
- 51:05Speaker 1: They were like, you look hungry.
- 51:06Speaker 9: Are you guys okay?
- 51:07Speaker 1: Well, they said most of the quote-unquote catering came from 7-Eleven.
- 51:12Speaker 1: So maybe the guys at the State Farm office were like,
- 51:14Speaker 1: if you shoot over here in front of our sign,
- 51:15Speaker 1: we'll go buy you some Slim Jims and Yoo-Hoo. How
- 51:17Speaker 1: about that? And he probably took them up on it.
- 51:20Speaker 1: Jake from Steak Farm.
- 51:23Speaker 7: Khakis?
- 51:23Speaker 1: Is he wearing khakis?
- 51:24Speaker 11: Is he wearing khakis?
- 51:25Speaker 1: Khakis. He's got khakis on. So, yeah. So, I would like, so,
- 51:31Speaker 1: I don't know. Where do we go from here? Mine
- 51:35Speaker 1: are just so many random things I kept taking note of.
- 51:38Speaker 11: Yeah, I mean, because the whole thing was so random.
- 51:39Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 51:40Speaker 1: I mean, but just moments of, like.
- 51:42Speaker 5: Like, okay, so how I said it would be my
- 51:43Speaker 5: version of, like, my terrible, like, lame job, like, sitting in, like,
- 51:47Speaker 5: some disaster scenario.
- 51:48Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 51:48Speaker 1: Also, like, and me making the worst.
- 51:51Speaker 5: Decision I could possibly make in that scenario.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Every single time. And why focus on all of the
- 51:56Speaker 1: things at your job that you absolutely hate? Again, it
- 52:04Speaker 1: may come because that was him. Like, it's so based
- 52:07Speaker 1: on his life. he may not have realized that was
- 52:10Speaker 1: the weird stuff that nobody knows about or nobody cares about.
- 52:14Speaker 1: When it's your life, you don't know that shit. You're right.
- 52:17Speaker 9: It's your day-to-day bullshit.
- 52:19Speaker 5: You just told your day-to-day friend bullshit to an audience.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Yes, to an entire group of people around the world.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Really?
- 52:25Speaker 1: That happened?
- 52:26Speaker 5: I'm so sorry.
- 52:27Speaker 11: What a crazy job.
- 52:28Speaker 2: Oh, boy.
- 52:28Speaker 1: I hate that for you. You got the stock options, though.
- 52:31Speaker 1: That's great.
- 52:32Speaker 6: Oh, wow.
- 52:32Speaker 1: Really good. Sounds like that was important. Stock options. You
- 52:36Speaker 1: got Stargazers.
- 52:37Speaker 5: And then that awkward applauding scene.
- 52:39Speaker 1: Oh, my God. Well, that was the thing. I got
- 52:41Speaker 1: to that point, and once again, I went back to
- 52:43Speaker 1: the mechanics of it, and I'm like... Oh, the boardroom?
- 52:45Speaker 1: The boardroom. The boardroom, yeah. Editing on applause scene is
- 52:49Speaker 1: really hard to do. And I'm watching it going, yeah.
- 52:53Speaker 1: I mean, that would. Literally, I'm thinking about it as
- 52:55Speaker 1: a dork that edits audio all the time, and I'm like,
- 52:58Speaker 1: you could never make that match up right. You would
- 53:01Speaker 1: have to find some way... To overdo the applause and
- 53:04Speaker 1: then still make the visuals match up with your new applause.
- 53:06Speaker 11: Oh, I didn't think about that.
- 53:07Speaker 1: I was being a tech geek going, that really would
- 53:10Speaker 1: kind of suck trying to match. Because he wanted to
- 53:12Speaker 1: get separate shots of all these people, I guess, because
- 53:14Speaker 1: he was like, I got eight people in a room
- 53:15Speaker 1: at once. I got to make sure they're on the
- 53:17Speaker 1: screen all at some point. You'd have to have your
- 53:19Speaker 1: live audio mixed with your cut-in audio. Yeah, you'd have
- 53:23Speaker 1: to fade in and out as you cut from one
- 53:24Speaker 1: shot to the other and have some overarching version of
- 53:27Speaker 1: it that didn't make it so choppy in between shots.
- 53:30Speaker 1: Because we get to points there where it stops, and
- 53:32Speaker 1: then the next scene's right back into it. No, it's
- 53:34Speaker 1: right back midway in at that next hard edit.
- 53:37Speaker 9: Audio drops.
- 53:38Speaker 11: And you're done, but you're not.
- 53:40Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 53:41Speaker 11: The audio drops in and out of that.
- 53:42Speaker 5: Thing a lot.
- 53:43Speaker 1: To the point, there's many times. Where you're like, what? Yeah,
- 53:46Speaker 1: in any professional movie, you shouldn't be going, wait, what'd
- 53:48Speaker 1: you say?
- 53:49Speaker 14: What?
- 53:50Speaker 5: What?
- 53:50Speaker 1: I shouldn't be talking, well, I was probably talking to
- 53:52Speaker 1: the characters a lot at the time, but I shouldn't
- 53:55Speaker 1: be going, wait, what? What'd he say?
- 53:56Speaker 5: But also, you realize that whatever you miss was probably
- 53:59Speaker 5: not that important.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Not that important.
- 54:01Speaker 11: Like, whatever, okay, okay.
- 54:02Speaker 1: Again, as like a movie person, that's just like, this
- 54:05Speaker 1: doesn't happen normally. Like, in studio releases, you don't go, wait, wait, what?
- 54:09Speaker 5: What?
- 54:10Speaker 8: What?
- 54:10Speaker 1: It's like, ah, ah, ah, ah.
- 54:12Speaker 8: No.
- 54:13Speaker 1: They come in and overdub that and you hear everything.
- 54:16Speaker 1: In this one, there is a lot of overdubbing, but
- 54:18Speaker 1: it's weird and awkward. There's times that I'm like, that
- 54:21Speaker 1: was four years later when they said that line.
- 54:25Speaker 2: Hey, what?
- 54:26Speaker 1: Well, those ones in the car. He's at the back
- 54:29Speaker 1: of the car, she's at the front. She's like, yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 1: that's a good idea.
- 54:32Speaker 11: It's like, where did that voice come from?
- 54:33Speaker 1: And it doesn't match any audio in the last five minutes.
- 54:36Speaker 1: It's so in a room four years later when he
- 54:39Speaker 1: did the looping part of it. Yeah. Oh, man. There's
- 54:43Speaker 1: just so many things. Yeah, well, you know, I feel
- 54:46Speaker 1: like it's... Technically, it's terrible.
- 54:48Speaker 5: Well, the way that it's told is kind of the
- 54:49Speaker 5: way that I imagine, like, when you're a kid and
- 54:52Speaker 5: you're making up a story and you're playing.
- 54:54Speaker 11: You know what I mean?
- 54:55Speaker 1: It's kind of true.
- 54:56Speaker 9: You've got, like, the characters in your hands.
- 54:58Speaker 5: And you know, but then you're kind of like, wait
- 55:00Speaker 5: a minute.
- 55:05Speaker 11: But then you're like, maybe... Or maybe then they.
- 55:08Speaker 1: Go over here. And then a dinosaur. Yeah, and then
- 55:12Speaker 1: you're like. The birds were the dinosaurs in this kid scenario.
- 55:14Speaker 11: Oh, I don't want to do this part over again. Oh,
- 55:16Speaker 11: and then what happens?
- 55:17Speaker 5: Wait, wait, wait.
- 55:17Speaker 11: And then you go get a Coke or like in
- 55:18Speaker 11: your life.
- 55:19Speaker 1: I forgot to tell you.
- 55:19Speaker 9: So he has chainsaws for hands. And then I forgot.
- 55:23Speaker 1: I forgot to mention that.
- 55:24Speaker 2: And also.
- 55:25Speaker 1: And also. Like you're just. He shoots lasers out of
- 55:28Speaker 1: his ears. He's winging it like every step of the way.
- 55:31Speaker 2: But I kind of.
- 55:31Speaker 5: That was one of the things that I actually kind
- 55:33Speaker 5: of liked about it. Because it reminded me of like.
- 55:35Speaker 1: The whole thing's an episode of Axe Cop.
- 55:39Speaker 5: Your mind works when you're a kid and you're like,
- 55:41Speaker 5: all these creative options are possible.
- 55:42Speaker 1: Yeah. You know?
- 55:44Speaker 5: And it's like, they're just kind of jacked up because
- 55:46Speaker 5: you can't quite reign them all in.
- 55:48Speaker 1: Well, but his was very narrowly limited to birds.
- 55:54Speaker 2: Birds.
- 55:55Speaker 1: And exploding. Well, and on just the most... On the landscape.
- 55:59Speaker 11: Did they shoot lasers?
- 56:00Speaker 1: No, no, there were just birds exploding on impact. There
- 56:04Speaker 1: were moments where I'm not sure what they were doing,
- 56:07Speaker 1: and we're jumping ahead to the birds. They were going
- 56:09Speaker 1: like this. There's at least one.
- 56:12Speaker 1: We should explain that there's probably, you know, probably... Three.
- 56:18Speaker 10: Five-eighths of the movie is just dialogue and parking.
- 56:23Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 56:24Speaker 9: Before we get to the... Parking, eating.
- 56:28Speaker 1: dancing horrible dancing oh dancing oh yeah dancing if you
- 56:34Speaker 1: want to call it that well there's uh yeah there's
- 56:38Speaker 1: and then when he says in.
- 56:39Speaker 5: That line about that scene where the girl goes off
- 56:42Speaker 5: to it's i guess the first like death in that
- 56:45Speaker 5: group right and she goes off with the other girl
- 56:48Speaker 5: and the rude dude is like remember when she walked
- 56:50Speaker 5: she walks off and the guy's like she took.
- 56:52Speaker 1: It or shit Oh, yeah.
- 56:54Speaker 11: I was like, what?
- 56:55Speaker 1: Who talks about their drama like that? Yeah, I mean,
- 56:58Speaker 1: I guess. That's probably factual. Well, that was once the
- 57:02Speaker 1: birdemic had begun. But she was the.
- 57:04Speaker 5: First of the group to get it, right?
- 57:06Speaker 1: And it was just so unceremonious.
- 57:08Speaker 11: And the way he said it, it's like.
- 57:10Speaker 1: They were in survival mode. Maybe that was real. Yeah,
- 57:12Speaker 1: we haven't even gotten to that part.
- 57:13Speaker 11: Maybe that was real.
- 57:14Speaker 1: They were in survival mode.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Because that dude was kind of a dick anyway, so
- 57:17Speaker 5: he would probably truly say something like that to somebody.
- 57:20Speaker 1: He probably would. But yeah, we jumped ahead to the birds. Sorry, yeah. Well,
- 57:23Speaker 1: now I'm still like, even the most basic setups of,
- 57:26Speaker 1: and that's why I was saying, which is the storytelling,
- 57:29Speaker 1: you have to kind of come at this like the
- 57:32Speaker 1: people sitting in the audience don't know, and you have
- 57:35Speaker 1: to explain everything to them. His characters don't even fully
- 57:40Speaker 1: do that within their own world, let alone to the audience.
- 57:43Speaker 1: So you have the moment when he makes his big
- 57:45Speaker 1: score and he had the biggest business deal of his life.
- 57:48Speaker 1: So now he's going to call the girl. So he
- 57:50Speaker 1: calls her up and there's that weird, awkward exchange. And
- 57:55Speaker 1: then they do it. Well, no, then it goes... okay
- 57:58Speaker 1: like hey let me take you out to celebrate your
- 58:00Speaker 1: big modeling job.
- 58:01Speaker 19: Okay he talks about his job the whole time he
- 58:03Speaker 19: talks about his job well no before but like when
- 58:05Speaker 19: they're still on the phone it's like okay i'll see
- 58:07Speaker 19: you then click i'm like what you'll see when where where.
- 58:12Speaker 15: Are you gonna like there's no exchange okay at the
- 58:15Speaker 15: thai restaurant yeah something it's.
- 58:17Speaker 1: Like they didn't say which one they didn't say when
- 58:19Speaker 1: this was a very small town there's only one thai
- 58:22Speaker 1: restaurant So I'm just like, even if you didn't feel like, okay,
- 58:28Speaker 1: this is dragging on too long, just be like her. Go, hey,
- 58:30Speaker 1: text me the address. See you later. Like, if you
- 58:32Speaker 1: could find a way to make it where you didn't
- 58:34Speaker 1: have to spell everything out. But you have to do
- 58:36Speaker 1: it on some human level that makes sense so that
- 58:39Speaker 1: you're like, okay, now on a basic level, this relationship
- 58:45Speaker 1: could happen in the real world. I gotta say, I
- 58:48Speaker 1: loved it.
- 58:49Speaker 9: I loved every bit of it.
- 58:50Speaker 1: Just the relationship? Every moment. Or the movie as a whole.
- 58:54Speaker 1: Or their relationship. And the fact that he whined and
- 59:00Speaker 1: dined her and then they went out dancing.
- 59:02Speaker 9: And there was the guy that sang in the background
- 59:05Speaker 9: with the song.
- 59:06Speaker 1: About the weird family? About hanging out with the family.
- 59:10Speaker 1: just hanging out hanging out.
- 59:26Speaker 3: Having ourselves a party Just hanging out, hanging out Hanging
- 59:34Speaker 3: out with my family Having ourselves a party A.
- 59:39Speaker 4: Cool summer breeze Making me feel at ease The barbecue
- 59:45Speaker 4: is broad And Uncle Phil is scoring Big Mama's in
- 59:50Speaker 4: the kitchen And everybody's wishing That she's Hanging out with
- 59:56Speaker 4: my family, having ourselves a party.
- 59:58Speaker 1: Just hanging out, hanging out, just hanging out.
- 1:00:21Speaker 3: This is another moment when I'm like, what world is this?
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: You have to make shit.
- 1:00:31Speaker 9: Function in a world that people recognize.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Why are they the only ones in this building? Like
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: there's nobody dancing.
- 1:00:53Speaker 5: Like if you did that to me, Paul Moeller, I
- 1:00:55Speaker 5: would be like.
- 1:00:56Speaker 9: Are you kidding?
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: What the fuck is wrong with you, dude? Sit down.
- 1:01:00Speaker 9: That's prime time dancing.
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: That's when I feel the most comfortable. There's no one
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: in here. We're setting the stage. It's creepy enough. This
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: dude just randomly popped up out of nowhere and is
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: singing an entire band's worth of music by himself.
- 1:01:14Speaker 11: By himself. And you want me to dance.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: That's impressive. Including backup singers. I'm like, was this karaoke night?
- 1:01:21Speaker 1: Or is he really supposed to be?
- 1:01:23Speaker 10: That expresses how confident and sure the protagonists are.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: Don't forget White.
- 1:01:32Speaker 9: Man, they are the whitest people in the world.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Based on that dancing.
- 1:01:37Speaker 9: Holy shit.
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: She's not nearly as white as he is.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: No, no, no.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: She's pretty bad.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: And then she makes eye contact with the camera, I think,
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: at one point.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Well, that has nothing to do with how white they are. No,
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: when she was doing the good moves. Because she's like,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: you're getting this, right? You're seeing what I'm putting out. Uh-huh. Cut.
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: White girl action. So, yeah, she was a little more ambitious,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: which kind of makes her more guilty in this scenario.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: He was just kind of like... I don't know. I'm
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: moving my arms.
- 1:02:07Speaker 11: He was like.
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: She was working it. He was being a typical white guy.
- 1:02:10Speaker 9: Yeah, he was taking chances and risks.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: He's a dork. And being out there. He didn't want
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: to get too far past his dorky comfort zone. I
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: appreciated her.
- 1:02:17Speaker 9: She was her robot.
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: She was a robot.
- 1:02:19Speaker 5: So, you know, the mom was in the other, the
- 1:02:22Speaker 5: first movie, I think, right? Like, did you pick up
- 1:02:24Speaker 5: on that? Like, that the mom was in the very
- 1:02:26Speaker 5: first movie and may have played, like, the main doctor?
- 1:02:28Speaker 11: I mean, I can't remember.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: I'm still laughing at the thumbs up. I'm sorry. That's
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: my girl! Pause, pause, pause, pause. Take your arm down.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: Do you remember? Like, it's weird. Once again, I was like,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: did they mean to leave that in the movie? Like,
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: she just, like, thumbs ups her. That's my girl! And then, like,
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: it hangs. And her daughter doesn't say a line in response.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: In fact, she kind of looks at her like, are
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: we still rolling? It's like there's a moment of like,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: oh shit, what's going on now? And then she just
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: puts her arm down and they carry on with the conversation.
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: And I was like, that's an edit point for God's sake.
- 1:03:06Speaker 11: The whole thing is awkward.
- 1:03:07Speaker 5: I mean, that's kind of like the best thing that
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: you can say.
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: That's what I loved about it.
- 1:03:11Speaker 5: Super awkward.
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: I loved that it was just so off time. But
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: you know. It was a syncopated movie.
- 1:03:18Speaker 11: But here's the thing.
- 1:03:19Speaker 5: Okay, so here's my comparison to the other movie that
- 1:03:22Speaker 5: we need to talk about, which I keep talking about.
- 1:03:24Speaker 5: Fateful Findings.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: Fateful Findings.
- 1:03:26Speaker 9: My favorite movie.
- 1:03:28Speaker 5: This is like an innocent... There's something very innocent.
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: Birdemic is innocent. There's something very genuine.
- 1:03:34Speaker 11: About what he's doing. Genuine and innocent about what he's doing.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Again, it gets worse as you get into his story.
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: But yeah, it's definitely very... earnest in the way that
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: he's doing this. It is. It's earnest.
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: You don't think that he's probably a really screwed up
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: kind of individual or something.
- 1:03:51Speaker 11: He really wanted to make a movie.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: That is why I avoided it all these years. I'd
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: seen enough of it that I'm like, it looks like
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: somebody trying to make a bad movie. It looks like
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: a bad sci-fi movie that they're very self-aware of what
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: they're making. And how bad it is.
- 1:04:04Speaker 5: Yeah like it's intentional.
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: And they're marketing it that way. Like they're trying to
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: short NATO. Yeah it's like you can't. Again you can't
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: make a cult film.
- 1:04:10Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: It has to be a cult film. If you try
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: to make a cult film. It's crap.
- 1:04:14Speaker 6: And like.
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: The audience knows that.
- 1:04:15Speaker 6: And like.
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: It becomes the dumb sci-fi movies. And people watch that.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Ironically now. But like. Nobody really likes those.
- 1:04:21Speaker 5: But I think that's really what we probably liked about weird,
- 1:04:24Speaker 5: bad movies as.
- 1:04:25Speaker 11: Kids, is they were genuine.
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: They definitely. And you were like... Before the mid-90s, nobody
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: was ironic about anything.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: No.
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: Everyone just went batshit crazy on their movies, and it
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: was a thing. And that was it. That was the thing.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: That was genuinely what they were trying to do. The
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: entire Canon Films catalog. Exactly. Hercules.
- 1:04:45Speaker 9: How did this happen?
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: Canon.
- 1:04:48Speaker 5: Which is, sidebar, a great documentary.
- 1:04:50Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: That was amazing and that guy that guy's crazy but
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: anyway both of the brothers or cousins whatever they were yeah.
- 1:04:58Speaker 9: Cousins Israeli cousins Israeli cousins.
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: And I feel like they're like my Israeli family in
- 1:05:05Speaker 5: the sense that they're just ambitious and just know what
- 1:05:07Speaker 5: they want to do yeah and insane it's pretty awesome
- 1:05:10Speaker 5: and figuring out how to get it done that's the
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: cool thing But yeah, so anyway, so I feel like Birdemic,
- 1:05:15Speaker 5: it was really sincere. But this other movie, there's something
- 1:05:18Speaker 5: more nefarious and dark about it. It's more disturbing.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: There's something going on under the.
- 1:05:23Speaker 11: It's weird.
- 1:05:23Speaker 9: Under the surface that you can't see.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: It's mysterious. It's like somebody making a David Lynch film
- 1:05:29Speaker 5: that has none of the.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: Like artsiness. Yeah, I was just going to say.
- 1:05:34Speaker 9: At least his is like ambitiously artsy.
- 1:05:37Speaker 5: Yeah, this other thing is like this bizarre David Lynch
- 1:05:41Speaker 5: character made his own movie.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: How about that?
- 1:05:44Speaker 9: Yeah, the character.
- 1:05:45Speaker 11: A David Lynch character made his own movie.
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: Tried to make a terrible movie.
- 1:05:47Speaker 11: That would be Fateful Findings.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: So we have to revisit that. Interesting. Fateful Findings, yes.
- 1:05:51Speaker 11: But I mean, Birdemic had a real like.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: He was trying to make this thing. It's just... Okay,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: so let's see.
- 1:06:00Speaker 9: When do the birds actually show up in Birdemic? Well,
- 1:06:03Speaker 9: first we have to have our... Well, there's a love scene.
- 1:06:07Speaker 9: They show up at the love scene.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: That's right. That's 45 minutes in.
- 1:06:10Speaker 5: They happen to run into the friends, right?
- 1:06:13Speaker 1: Before we get to their love scene, when she calls her,
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: we've got the other love scene. Because what I like
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: is when I get a good bikini grinding going on.
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: I want to lay in bed in a bikini and
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: just kind of do stuff, but not really. I mean,
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: just kind of pretend like we're doing stuff.
- 1:06:29Speaker 11: That's not what I noticed.
- 1:06:30Speaker 5: What I noticed was the terrible hotel room.
- 1:06:33Speaker 8: Well.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: well no i was talking about the friend though the
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: friend is most definitely which once again like i even
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: when we jump ahead to their love scene i'm like
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: why are you in a hotel like you both have
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: a home they didn't go out of town or anything
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: like oh they did they went to half moon i
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: guess i thought they lived there no that's where they
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: went they took a trip they took a day trip.
- 1:06:57Speaker 11: They drove there and they went to the like.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: Half Moon Bay? They went to Half Moon Bay.
- 1:07:01Speaker 5: We've been to Half Moon Bay and that didn't happen
- 1:07:03Speaker 5: to us.
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: But did you go to the Art and Pumpkin Festival? No, no, no, wait.
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: But the part that I noticed whenever the two of
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: them got together... They woke up the next morning when
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: the birds came. He was still fully clothed. In bed.
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: That's the thing. I'm just like, did they do something
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: and completely get dressed again? Or was this a night
- 1:07:26Speaker 1: of clothed cuddling? She's half clothed and he's fully clothed.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: But even then, okay, we'll say... As a woman, we'll
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: pretend like something happened, and then you put everything back
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: on before you go to sleep? Does that seem like
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: a thing? Maybe they're one of those, like, put a
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: sheet between us with a hole in it couples. But
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: a bikini is the sheet with the hole in it.
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: What really happened was they ran in while they were
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: cleaning the room and said, hang on, we've got to
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: film this scene.
- 1:07:55Speaker 11: And then ran back out so they didn't have to pay.
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: For a hotel room.
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: They're like, we don't have time for you to take
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: your clothes off. Just lay down in the bed and
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: look out the window at the bad animation.
- 1:08:02Speaker 11: But really, you're looking out for the cleaning lady.
- 1:08:04Speaker 9: So you don't get busted.
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: Yeah, really. We don't want to have to clean the
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: room ourselves.
- 1:08:07Speaker 11: But yeah, I mean, that was like, I don't understand.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: But he had on a belt.
- 1:08:11Speaker 5: Who sleeps in a belt?
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: But the other couple was the same thing. She was
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: on top of him when the phone rang wearing a bikini.
- 1:08:17Speaker 9: It was not underwear.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: It had the weird metal ring. Like you don't wear
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: that under your clothes. She was wearing a bikini in
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: bed on top of him. And he was fully clothed
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: once again. And what is going on there? This is
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: the guy who's nothing but sex. This guy is sex
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: all the time. Yeah, fully clothed, and his girlfriend wears
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: a bikini when they're doing things.
- 1:08:42Speaker 9: So there's just a weird.
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: Again, I think it was just he didn't... Which, again,
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: I guess points to him in the real world. Like,
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: if I were a director, I would be really... I
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: would feel creepy being like, okay, so take all your
- 1:08:55Speaker 1: clothes off. We're going to shoot this. So I think
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: it was a little bit of like, I don't want
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: to make these girls get naked. So, but his alternative
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: was not, let's shoot it, Artie. Instead, it's, let's make
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: you wear a bikini in bed.
- 1:09:06Speaker 5: Yeah, but I mean.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: So let's have scandalous sex scenes, but not actually show nakedness.
- 1:09:12Speaker 9: We'll just have clothed sex scenes.
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:09:14Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:09:15Speaker 5: Yeah, there's a whole lot of weird stuff going on.
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: That was even too much to just even address because
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: it's like, I.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Don't even know. That's a lot of weird. I think
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: that was actually why. I think he didn't want to
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: make them get naked. He didn't want to show nudity
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: in the film. So I almost respect that angle of it.
- 1:09:31Speaker 5: Why couldn't they.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Just put a sheet? With a hole in it. I
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: think we're getting a peek inside your bedroom. But anyway,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: that aside. Where's your sheet with a hole in it?
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: You're not supposed to out that on the show. I'm
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: doing something.
- 1:09:48Speaker 9: You guys keep that in the other room. Hey, where's
- 1:09:50Speaker 9: the sheet with the hole?
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: Hey! But... And then the birds show up. Well, that's
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: how you get the hole.
- 1:09:58Speaker 9: They peck a hole through your sheet.
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: Oh, finally! Bird hole. Bird hole. Bird hole? Gotta get
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: the bird hole.
- 1:10:07Speaker 9: The holes for the birds.
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: What are you doing to these birds? I don't think
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: you're supposed to do that. So they wake up the
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: next morning.
- 1:10:12Speaker 9: He's fully clothed.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: She's in a... Yeah, but see, if you're saying that,
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: if you're saying.
- 1:10:21Speaker 5: That he doesn't want to show nudity, then how come
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: she gets up in a thong?
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: I know. He goes to the window and is like,
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: where are these birds? That was not near enough of
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: that for me.
- 1:10:33Speaker 5: It's full moon bay at that point. So yeah, I mean,
- 1:10:36Speaker 5: if that's what he's concerned about, that, to me, then
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: that's just.
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: Sexist. Once again, no, I think it's just not, like, again,
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: an artsier, like a bad art student that went to
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: film school would be like, okay, we, you know, I
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: can't convince my friend that I am in class with
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: to take her clothes off. So instead, I'm gonna artfully
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: cut it so that, like, she's got the sheet up
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: around her, then we cut to her, a close-up of
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: her by the window. Sheet in the hole.
- 1:11:01Speaker 11: You've already edited this thing way better than you ever have.
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: Well, that's what I'm saying. I think somebody super artsy
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: would know, okay, I can work around this. It's like
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: he didn't know. It's like he just, it did not
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: occur to him to like, oh, we can work around
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: that and still make it realistic-ish. Instead, it's just like, well,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: I don't want to show nudity, so put on a bikini.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: You stay clothed. Good enough. Like, I don't think it
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: was good enough. I think it was just like, that
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: fixes my problem. Like, it's like those things didn't connect
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: in his head. It was just this problem here. I
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: don't want her to be naked. I don't want them
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: to be in bed together naked. Okay, I fixed it.
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Move on to the next scene. Like, I think it
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: didn't connect.
- 1:11:38Speaker 5: I mean, I realize this could be an English as
- 1:11:39Speaker 5: a second language thing is what.
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: We're talking about. You had to go to window to
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: see Bud. It's not that bad, by the way. He's
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: pretty well versed in English, which makes this even more weird.
- 1:11:49Speaker 5: Yeah, but how can it.
- 1:11:50Speaker 11: Be like movies?
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 1:11:52Speaker 5: Like, how can you have a concept of movies as
- 1:11:54Speaker 5: a third language?
- 1:11:55Speaker 9: I do kind of wonder that, though.
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: I mean, being the movie... fan that he is right
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: like he really is hardcore about loving specifically hitchcock like
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: somebody who's that artful about the way they shot their
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: movies and the way they structure like He structured the
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: hell out of his movies before actors even came along.
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: So to have him as your hero and then.
- 1:12:16Speaker 11: Not pick up on any of that. Yeah, like how
- 1:12:19Speaker 11: is that?
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: It's not... It is a little weird that just, again,
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: me being a movie geek, I'm like, I feel like
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: I could fix some of the problems just from watching.
- 1:12:27Speaker 10: I think what it was is that he focused on
- 1:12:30Speaker 10: the emotional aspects of Hitchcock. So he was just trying
- 1:12:34Speaker 10: to capture the emotion of those... scenes in hitchcock rather
- 1:12:38Speaker 10: than the actual mechanics of doing scene to scene but
- 1:12:43Speaker 10: that's part.
- 1:12:43Speaker 5: Of what makes those scenes so emotional well.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: I totally agree but you know if you have both
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: to someone who gets that yes yes if all that's
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: hitting for that's like.
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: Not having any kind of like empathy right it's like
- 1:12:57Speaker 5: not having film empathy.
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: Like he might be on the spectrum he's on the
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: filmmaking spectrum and some of these things just don't occur
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: to him to fix He's on the far end. But
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying?
- 1:13:10Speaker 5: Because that is, like, if you're trying to convey emotions,
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: then there's a way to edit things.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: There's a rhythm.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:13:16Speaker 9: There's a rhythm to that emotion. And a creative way.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: Solo panels. And a creative way to fix your problems. Like,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: that's what makes a good director is, like, shit never
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: goes right for anybody, you know, in any job. Specifically
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: something this artistically based that then you have to cram
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: into real world scenarios. So like a good director and
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: one who keeps making movies learns on the job and
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: just goes, okay, here's what we're going to do. We're
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: going to shoot it this way. We're going to move
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: you out of the bed. We're going to go over here.
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Like you learn to make adjustments that fix your problems.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: And I think he was just like, okay, this is
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: the way I'm fixing it. Like I don't, it just
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: wasn't an artful way to fix most of his problems.
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: Well, or maybe also. And it's just ignorance really. He'd
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: never really made movies in Hollywood.
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: When you think about how you would shoot a film,
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: like how you would do different scenes and different, you know,
- 1:14:06Speaker 5: set up your camera in different spots to capture different whatever,
- 1:14:09Speaker 5: he just has his one thing going on. And that's everything.
- 1:14:13Speaker 5: That's kind of that whole movie.
- 1:14:14Speaker 11: It's like one static scene.
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: It's not like we have a B story going somewhere else.
- 1:14:19Speaker 11: Yeah, well, no, or even the way it's filmed.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: Like, it's not like there's very few instances where it's
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: like there's a cut scene and then somebody's filmed in
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: a different way responding.
- 1:14:29Speaker 11: And the ones that are are really awkward.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Or super choppy, yeah.
- 1:14:31Speaker 11: Yeah, for the other stuff, it's still always like, this
- 1:14:34Speaker 11: is happening here. This is happening here.
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: You know, instead of like figuring out how to edit.
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:40Speaker 5: Film different spots and edit it. Wow, we sound like
- 1:14:42Speaker 5: we should make a movie.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: I think we should. Start sending funds right now.
- 1:14:45Speaker 5: I just want to be a showrunner because it sounds
- 1:14:47Speaker 5: like a great title.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: I'm a showrunner.
- 1:14:49Speaker 5: At my job, I'm a showrunner.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: Not this show, Missy.
- 1:14:52Speaker 9: I am the showrunner around here.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: No, not this. I can't do this.
- 1:14:56Speaker 11: I sound stupid on this anyway.
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: When we start our Netflix series, go ahead and somebody
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: green light that so we can start making it. Let's
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: do that. Right now, you can show run that and
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: I'll find some tech job to do. I'd like to
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: take this opportunity at this point in the show to
- 1:15:11Speaker 1: tell you the benefits of solar panels. What are those?
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Solar panels. Solar?
- 1:15:17Speaker 9: Solar.
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Solar panels.
- 1:15:18Speaker 11: Who sponsored it? Evergreen.
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: Sponsored by Green.
- 1:15:23Speaker 5: Evergreen.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: Wasn't that the name of the? Solar panels. Let me
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: interject and say, I think $ 20, 000 is a little pricey.
- 1:15:31Speaker 11: For a solar panel?
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: For a solar panel? Solar panel.
- 1:15:34Speaker 9: Because he's getting like one, it sounds like. Over on
- 1:15:37Speaker 9: the corner.
- 1:15:39Speaker 11: Which, is that what gave him the idea to start
- 1:15:41Speaker 11: his business?
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: I guess. Then I guess he was just like, that
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: is a good idea. I want to be green.
- 1:15:47Speaker 5: I'm going to be green, and those were expensive, and I.
- 1:15:49Speaker 11: Could do it cheaper.
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: I could beat these bastards. Solar panels. Solar panels.
- 1:15:54Speaker 10: Yes, so if you haven't picked up on that, yes,
- 1:15:56Speaker 10: he is selling now solar panels?
- 1:16:00Speaker 11: Yeah, he got his big deal.
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: He was buying solar panels, and then he decides to
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: sell solar panels at a much cheaper rate than the competition,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: therefore making him a financial genius. Evergreen investment.
- 1:16:19Speaker 9: Evergreen investment. Making him a genius.
- 1:16:23Speaker 1: Did he like seek out someone else that could do
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: it cheaper? Or did he like make a deal with
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: that dude in his driveway that's like, how about if
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: you do it a little cheaper and then we work
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: together and we jack up the prices and I get
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: you a better profit margin.
- 1:16:35Speaker 5: So we got to hear so much about his big deal,
- 1:16:37Speaker 5: but we never figured out how he truly became the
- 1:16:39Speaker 5: genius solar panel dude.
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: How any of it. Like, does he make these? Is
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: he in the garage there? Like putting together solar panels?
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: Better yet, does the.
- 1:16:48Speaker 9: Enhanced solar panel caused the Birdemic.
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: Well, they taught.
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: No one discusses how the Birdemic begins.
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: The Birdemic begins. It just begins.
- 1:17:03Speaker 9: Or did it?
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: Is he the catalyst of Birdemic?
- 1:17:05Speaker 11: He and his solar panels.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: And his skanky... Solar panels. I was thinking maybe... The
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: hole in the sheet. Maybe that's what it is. Maybe
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: they're a little rolling around in the bikini hay is what...
- 1:17:18Speaker 1: Cracked open that seventh seal and pissed off the powers
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: that be. And we're like, oh, no. We won't have
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: any of that.
- 1:17:24Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: Bird plague. Soul panel.
- 1:17:28Speaker 6: Unleashed.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: It was crazy. By soul panel.
- 1:17:29Speaker 8: Really.
- 1:17:29Speaker 5: And in the end, I mean, I know I'm skipping
- 1:17:31Speaker 5: ahead here because there's plenty more to discuss.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: Oh, there is. But the doves.
- 1:17:36Speaker 5: What are the doves?
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: Oh, that's at the end.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: I know.
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: You can't skip to the end. Okay, I'm not skipping
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: to the end. Don't skip it.
- 1:17:40Speaker 5: So anyway, so yeah, they go on this like crazy
- 1:17:43Speaker 5: road trip.
- 1:17:43Speaker 11: Who doesn't love a road trip film?
- 1:17:44Speaker 9: With machine guns, with never-ending ammo.
- 1:17:47Speaker 15: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: First of all, he just runs into some other weirdo's room.
- 1:17:51Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:17:52Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: And we're like, where did these guys come from? Who knows?
- 1:17:55Speaker 9: It wasn't like... That's important.
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: Wait a minute. I thought it was their friend. No,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: that's not their friend. Totally different guy. Two other random weirdos.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: Just as smarmy, but he has guns. I thought it
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: was their friend.
- 1:18:08Speaker 11: I thought it was the same people and he.
- 1:18:09Speaker 1: Was with a different girl.
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Totally different guy. That's the thing. Well, the other girl's Asian.
- 1:18:14Speaker 11: That's what I'm saying. He was with a different girl.
- 1:18:16Speaker 11: I thought it was the same dude with a different girl.
- 1:18:18Speaker 11: And they were like, hey, how are you?
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: That's a different douchebag. So this is like they just
- 1:18:23Speaker 1: wander into this other people's room and then there's like, hey,
- 1:18:26Speaker 1: so you guys okay? Like it's just... You'd think if
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: the world were, you know, apocalypting around you, you'd be like.
- 1:18:32Speaker 9: There's a bird light going on.
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you'd be like, um, what the fuck? Did you
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: see those birds? It'd be a little bigger response, but
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: just like, hey, you guys okay? All right, cool. Let's
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: get some hangers. Let's do this. Hangers. And I feel
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: like there.
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: Should have been a lot of like, pew, pew, pew, pew.
- 1:18:50Speaker 5: noises in all of this too.
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I mean, I assume that was going on in your
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: head the whole time anyway.
- 1:18:54Speaker 9: Yeah, it was actually.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: But that's... I was sitting next to you. You were actually...
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Was I doing that? You were mouthing. There was a
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: lot of pew, pew, pew, pew, pew, pew. But that,
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: it comes back to another like just lapse in like
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: just knowing how to tell a story because... This guy
- 1:19:09Speaker 1: jumps into his crappy minivan like it could have been
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: a soccer mom.
- 1:19:12Speaker 5: And he borrowed from his mom.
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: And then like a second later, he pulls out not
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: even a gun. Like if you had a handgun in
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: your glove compartment, all right, I'd buy that. Probably a
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: lot of people out there do. He pulls out a
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: fucking assault rifle and just starts firing out the window.
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: I'm like, why does this guy have an assault rifle
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: in his minivan? Two of them? Doesn't he have two? Well,
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: he's got the handgun, too. He's like, here, take this.
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: And our dorky software guy goes, okay.
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: And just suddenly knows how to fire a gun. I'm like,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: I would have guessed you'd never fired a gun before today,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: but somehow now you... Because he sells solar panels. Somehow
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: now you know how to fire this gun and didn't ask, wait,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: is this the safety on? And then he went and
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: shoots the guy. I sell solar panels. eventually later, once again,
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: this is being too close to the project that you love. Later,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: the guy's like, oh, why aren't you in the Marines anymore?
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, if we knew that at the beginning,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: like if he would have like, come into the hotel
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: room and went, like, it's cool, I'm a Marine. I've
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: got some ammo and some guns out in the van. Like,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: if we had set that up, it would make sense.
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: But this is just a basic lapse in storytelling of, like,
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: 20 minutes later. I have an entire trailer full of
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: ammo that we can draw upon throughout the remainder of
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: the film.
- 1:20:26Speaker 5: Listen, full disclosure here, at some point I was looking
- 1:20:28Speaker 5: at Pinterest.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: Honestly. This is not the proper way to watch a film.
- 1:20:34Speaker 1: I disagree with your film watching.
- 1:20:35Speaker 5: I think I missed that because at some point I
- 1:20:37Speaker 5: was looking at Pinterest probably. I think it was when
- 1:20:41Speaker 5: he started to go into like Al Gorspiel.
- 1:20:47Speaker 1: Well, that is reason to tune out a little bit.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: The one with the music behind it?
- 1:20:51Speaker 15: Yes.
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: Where they're like patriotic music. Wait a minute. I have
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: to talk about the guy that they run into in
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: the woods.
- 1:21:00Speaker 6: Oh, no.
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: That's what I'm talking about. My response. Hold on. As
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: soon as we got to him, nice wig, hippie. It's
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: the worst wig ever.
- 1:21:10Speaker 11: I'm like, did you borrow that from the samurai cop?
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: It's the worst wig ever. They run out into the woods,
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: and they run into this guy who has a tree house.
- 1:21:20Speaker 9: Can we play in it?
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: No. Oh, damn it. He's stolen the samurai cop's wig.
- 1:21:25Speaker 9: The birds might come, and I can't play in that
- 1:21:27Speaker 9: tree house.
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: Just the kids. Oh yeah, that's why. I am being
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: eternally 11 years old.
- 1:21:35Speaker 10: And then he goes on this long speech about the
- 1:21:39Speaker 10: environment and how we are ruining it.
- 1:21:44Speaker 6: We are.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: I don't disagree with either of the two or three.
- 1:21:49Speaker 10: The politics are accurate, but the drama is probably inappropriate.
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: And again, a little ham-fisted. Yeah. A little shoved down
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: your throat.
- 1:21:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: I think the worst one. And then it's over. Like,
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: almost as quickly as it comes, it's gone. Well, that's because... Wait, what?
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: You have notes on this? I had to make notes.
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: That moment in particular.
- 1:22:13Speaker 6: Hold on.
- 1:22:13Speaker 11: It is, but why? Because it's on fire. And how
- 1:22:16Speaker 11: is it not? Does he not know that it's on
- 1:22:18Speaker 11: fire before that?
- 1:22:19Speaker 1: That's not the reason he leaves. Really? He leaves because, well,
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I gotta go. I hear a mountain lion. Oh, that's right!
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: That's right, yeah. Many a time, I've ended an awkward
- 1:22:29Speaker 1: conversation with, uh, gotta get out of here, mountain lion. Not, not, oh,
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: I hear a mountain lion. You all should come with
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: me to the treehouse. No, no. No. Fuck you. Go
- 1:22:39Speaker 1: up into the burning woods. You're on your own. Go
- 1:22:42Speaker 1: into the burning woods. And fight a mountain lion with
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: your fists.
- 1:22:47Speaker 11: I'm gonna use that.
- 1:22:48Speaker 5: Like, the next time I'm stuck in some kind of
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: bizarre conversation, I'll be like, I gotta go. I hear
- 1:22:52Speaker 5: a mountain lion.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: There's a... That's the way I'm going to handle telemarketers
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: from now on.
- 1:22:56Speaker 9: Goddamn mountain lions.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: Which they are kind of making a comeback lately, so
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: I'm going to be like, gotta go, mountain lion. You
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: just won a cruise.
- 1:23:05Speaker 9: I gotta go, I heard a mountain lion.
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: Sorry, gotta go, mountain lion. You'll never have a mountain
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: lion on a cruise. Swimming mountain lion. He's got water wings.
- 1:23:16Speaker 9: I think even more horrible.
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Than the hippie in the bad wig is the dude
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: with the surgical mask on when they're out there.
- 1:23:25Speaker 17: But there is scientific evidence to show that because of
- 1:23:27Speaker 17: our burning of fossil fuels and creating greenhouse gases, which
- 1:23:31Speaker 17: is causing global warming, it's raising the temperature of the
- 1:23:34Speaker 17: seas and species like the krill are dying. So many
- 1:23:38Speaker 17: bird species can't find food, like the New Jersey crows.
- 1:23:42Speaker 17: So they eventually starve and die and wash up on
- 1:23:45Speaker 17: the shore. It's also evidence that global warming is interrupting
- 1:23:49Speaker 17: the birth, mating, and migration cycles of many species. In fact,
- 1:23:53Speaker 17: in the last few years, 40 species have become extinct
- 1:23:57Speaker 17: because of global warming.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: I feel like his speech is longer and a little
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: more Al Gore-y. On the bridge. There's an old guy
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: on that bridge.
- 1:24:07Speaker 9: Hey, let's go talk to him.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: That guy is preachy as fuck. Yeah. Yeah, he's at
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: the beach. He's like, oh, yeah.
- 1:24:16Speaker 9: You know, I don't even remember his speech, actually.
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: I tuned out immediately. I was like, oh my God,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: you're bleeding heart bullshit. I agree with everything you're saying,
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: but shut up. I'm like, yes, we're stupid. Humans are horrible.
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: We're ruining the planet. Oh, that's true. I don't want
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: to hear you talk about it, weird old man.
- 1:24:33Speaker 5: Aren't you afraid of these birds?
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: The birds don't bother me because human beings are the
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: real danger in this world, which is true. We're the
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: most horrible animals on the planet. Turns out, it's man.
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: You cannot fight that. That is the truth. Humans are
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: the worst thing on this planet. The human animal. Human animal.
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: The human animal.
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: That we all are.
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: Charlton Heston.
- 1:24:57Speaker 7: Mountain lion.
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: Damn dirty.
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: Gotta go. I heard a mountain lion.
- 1:25:01Speaker 7: Mountain lions.
- 1:25:01Speaker 1: That's what's bringing us all down.
- 1:25:02Speaker 11: It was a bit.
- 1:25:04Speaker 5: But his heart was in the right place.
- 1:25:05Speaker 11: Let's go back to that.
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: Well, no. Which one? Surgical mask man?
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: No.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: Let's... Since we're... near the end of the movie.
- 1:25:13Speaker 6: Are we?
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: But I feel like we've skipped a lot. No, no,
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: we don't.
- 1:25:17Speaker 5: And the kids are like eating candy.
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: Yeah, why do we have kids, for one thing? Well,
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: because they're... Pretty mommy! Are you saying children are the future?
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: I think it's because he's indicating that they have to.
- 1:25:32Speaker 9: Repopulate the planet?
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:25:33Speaker 8: No!
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: What are they talking about?
- 1:25:35Speaker 5: Like 10 people in Half Moon Bay were killed in
- 1:25:37Speaker 5: this whole bird outbreak.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: Well, we don't know that, actually. We only saw about 10.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: We really only saw about 10. Because of the situation
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: that occurred on the road, they're implying that it is
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: a lawless situation. It's pretty much every man for themselves.
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: The guy that.
- 1:25:57Speaker 5: Steals her gas?
- 1:25:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:25:58Speaker 9: Tries to. And then he leaves his gas on the
- 1:26:02Speaker 9: side of the road.
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: A guy just died trying to take this from you.
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: And instead, which you just paid like, I don't know,
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: $ 500 for that thing you.
- 1:26:11Speaker 9: Left on the side of the road. So point being,
- 1:26:15Speaker 9: it's a lawless situation.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: And people are dying. They are becoming the... They're taking
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: a parental role and they're trying to raise these children
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: so that they don't die a quick, gruesome death by birds.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: The lawlessness also doesn't match up. Oh, I agree.
- 1:26:36Speaker 5: Because when they're shooting the birds and everybody's just driving
- 1:26:38Speaker 5: by like in like rush hour traffic.
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: That too. But again, that I feel like is very practical.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, I can't stop rush hour traffic guys.
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: I gotta go to work. I have no money.
- 1:26:48Speaker 9: I can't block off this road.
- 1:26:49Speaker 5: You guys just hang out and act like you're doing this.
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: And again, this is a moment we get in almost
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: every post-apocalyptic kind of a movie. We get the moment
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: of like, okay, let's go hit the store and get supplies.
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: So they get to that first win and it's like,
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: pretty much wiped out like it is empty shelves and
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: like there's like one of each thing they take and
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: a couple of sandwiches but for the most part they
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: really did find like i guess a store that had
- 1:27:13Speaker 1: been closed or something because like most of the shelves
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: are empty so my first issue is like okay wait
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: it happened this morning so in the span of a
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: couple of hours like as far as we can tell
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: it was the morning when they got up after they
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: were having rolling around bikini sex And then like a
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: few hours later when they drive down the road, this
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: thing is already completely empty.
- 1:27:32Speaker 10: Because Jan at the sandwich maker didn't show up to
- 1:27:35Speaker 10: make sandwiches for the gas station sandwich.
- 1:27:39Speaker 9: So there's that.
- 1:27:40Speaker 5: And you know, the only thing that was left was
- 1:27:41Speaker 5: like tuna or egg.
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: And these haven't been refrigerated all night.
- 1:27:46Speaker 10: The rotary hot dog maker, you know, no one was
- 1:27:49Speaker 10: there to put the hot dogs on the rotary machine.
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: That one shriveled up one was the only one left.
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: Nobody wants that. That's it. But then we get like
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: a day, not even, I don't know. When does all
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: this happen? Is it all one day? I can't tell.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: So a few hours later in this day that goes
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: on forever. We get to another store and it's kind
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: of normal. So I'm like, this is after, isn't it
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: after they've already even held up on the road? They
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: get to the, and the old man's just like, well,
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: we don't have much. No, it was right before because
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: it's when he buys the gas. He's like, we don't
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: have much gas left, but like the shelves are fucking
- 1:28:20Speaker 1: fully stocked.
- 1:28:20Speaker 11: If you need any food, you can come on back.
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: I mean like the kids, like kids go pick out
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: some candy. Like this place is just overrun with stuff.
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: And I'm like, It's not that much further down the
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: road from, you know, complete wiped out desolation. But here,
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: I'm like, then this is after. Like, if it was reversed,
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: it would almost maybe make sense.
- 1:28:39Speaker 20: A little bit a quick quick sidebar there's a lot
- 1:28:43Speaker 20: of them on this movie if if there was a
- 1:28:46Speaker 20: an apocalypse all right let's say it doesn't matter what
- 1:28:50Speaker 20: brand of apocalypse there was play.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: This game about once a day you know whatever if
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: you owned.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: A 7-eleven.
- 1:28:59Speaker 21: Wouldn't you immediately bar the doors and say, Hey, you know,
- 1:29:06Speaker 21: damn it, I've got an endless supply of gas, food, water,
- 1:29:11Speaker 21: and a bathroom.
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: What I need now is a lot of guns because
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: I need to protect this shit. And you probably already
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: have that. At least one by encounter. Why would you
- 1:29:20Speaker 1: not shut the doors? How would anyone else find it?
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying. The old guy behind the counter,
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: just more or less with the exception of jacking up
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: gas prices, is still kind of running things business as usual.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: He's reasonable. He's reasonable. He's just level-headed.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: He's a pragmatist.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: That is not an actual apocalypse. It's just an epidemic.
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: It's just a birdemic. A birdemic, you might say. It's
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: true they were shooting lasers. Well, I also feel like
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: one had a missile launcher at the gas station, actually.
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: The one gas station that gets blown up. I swear
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: it's at the very end of the scene and it
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: kind of goes pew! And like it fires and then
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: their explosion hits one of the gas tank. Well, again,
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: it doesn't hit anything. It's a bad layer over top
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: of everything. But it pretends like it hits a gas
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: tank or something and it explodes. And I'm like, where
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: did that come from and what was it? And I
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: don't understand so much. We barely touched on the eagles.
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: I'm using quotes. eagles that come along although they constantly
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: reference the eagles and vultures did eagles and did they
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: look any different because to me i saw they did
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: about five different animations there were three birds there were
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: three birds they did that come on paul get on
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: board we're all doing the arm motion all right so
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: you guys can't see it but we're all doing the
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: arm motions we're the three birds we have wings so
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: they all do that arm motion with their wings and
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: occasionally they rotate Well, we get a different angle. We
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: get the flying towards the camera, like, pre-programmed shot. So, like, again, there's, like,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: five variations. No matter what, you can make it a
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: little bigger, further in the distance, maybe. But, like, you
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: can change the little bit about it. But for the
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: most part, we get about five animations that just constantly
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: get looped.
- 1:31:04Speaker 11: It's so easy to make a movie about, like, bird wars.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: You're 16-bit bird animation. Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: It's your Mario Brother bird animation.
- 1:31:13Speaker 9: Mario Brother bird animation.
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: Oh, 32. 32-bit animations of birds. It didn't bump its
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: way up the Nintendo 64. No. It was right in
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: the middle.
- 1:31:22Speaker 5: 32.
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: It's like a Sega Saturn level, maybe.
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: It was just Zelda.
- 1:31:29Speaker 1: Super Nintendo Zelda.
- 1:31:30Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 1:31:31Speaker 1: Maybe. So, anyway. So.
- 1:31:36Speaker 5: That.
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: It pretty much takes us to the end, I think. Wait, wait.
- 1:31:39Speaker 4: No.
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: We missed. After we get the food at the place,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: we're being attacked by creatures that fly in the air.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Let's go sit outside and have a picnic.
- 1:31:50Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: Why would they have a picnic? Outside. Like, I can
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: understand you need to stop and eat the food. Why
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: would you get out of the car or find a
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: building to go inside? Like, why would you go the
- 1:32:00Speaker 1: one place birds can get to you?
- 1:32:01Speaker 5: If you had hung out at Target for a few hours,
- 1:32:03Speaker 5: you could have avoided this entire thing. Like, I could
- 1:32:06Speaker 5: have missed a birdemic if I was on a good
- 1:32:08Speaker 5: Target run.
- 1:32:09Speaker 9: That's probably true.
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: Was that the same... point when he was fishing or
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: was that before he.
- 1:32:14Speaker 15: Was oh that was before that was okay fish like
- 1:32:17Speaker 15: has any have they never bought.
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: A fish again i'm not a fisherman but i'm pretty
- 1:32:22Speaker 1: sure you don't just boil it engage in a lot
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: you don't just boil a fish i think there's cleaning
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: and you open it right because the kids were like Ugh, gross.
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: And who got fucking seaweed? You're not making sushi, you weirdo.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: What are you doing? The boiled heart. Yeah, that's my favorite.
- 1:32:40Speaker 12: Yay.
- 1:32:41Speaker 11: Boiled whole fish with seaweed.
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: Boiled liver. Once again, I agree.
- 1:32:45Speaker 9: My 11-year-old self agrees with those kids.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I want a happy meal.
- 1:32:48Speaker 9: I want a Happy Meal.
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: I'm not going to eat that shit. And I want
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: a toy, damn it. I don't care if it's epidemic
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: or not.
- 1:32:51Speaker 11: Look, if we wait this thing out for about two
- 1:32:53Speaker 11: more hours, we can get a Happy Meal.
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: Yeah, well, when you have a guy that sells solar
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: panels and a stripper making your food for a toy.
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: I was going to say, though, while you were in
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: that Target, you might have picked up their tripod. Because this, again,
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: being the tech geek, I was like, no, it's like
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: when they're doing this weird pan shot, which, again, points
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: to him for deciding to do a pan. But I'm like,
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: it's a weird jerky motion. And that's from a cheap-ass tripod.
- 1:33:17Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: I know, because I have one. And I think I
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: bought it at Target. And so if you're doing old-school
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: 35 millimeter, you can put it up there and prop
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: your camera up. If you put a video camera on it,
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: it's not smooth. It's not expensive. So you get, even
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: when it's relatively moving fluid, it's this weird little jerky
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: thing that happens that's a crappy tripod. And I'm like,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: this poor bastard couldn't even buy like professional equipment. Like
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: I just, at that moment I was like, oh, that's
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: like shit I have.
- 1:33:44Speaker 9: Like I feel bad for you, dude. Cause I ain't
- 1:33:46Speaker 9: got no money either.
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: Like there was moments when I was just like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: I know that move. That's It's why I don't paint
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: a lot in my short films. I set that bench
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: on the tripod and I move around to the other side.
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: So.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: There's, yeah, there's so many.
- 1:34:04Speaker 5: It's weird because it seems like it was a long movie.
- 1:34:08Speaker 9: Well, it's because of all the horrible edits.
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: Well, and we have like two movies, so we felt
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: like we watched two movies. Because there's like at least
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: half of it that's just non-bird related bullshit. And then
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: a whole lot of driving around with birds. Zero survival.
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: I liked when they'd shoot the birds so they would explode.
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: That really appeals to my inner eight-year-old.
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: Why did they make plane noises? I'm not complaining because
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: my internal 11-year-old was like, cool plane noises. But when
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: they first show up, there's a lot of.
- 1:34:41Speaker 20: But then they don't have as much of that later on.
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: They don't.
- 1:34:44Speaker 9: Like you forgot he put that in.
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: Because in the beginning, you had the wide shot where
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: you were looking at the city and the birds were
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: flying into.
- 1:34:52Speaker 9: Buildings and blowing up.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: Yeah, some of them were. That was where the sound
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: effect came in. Oh, yeah, yeah. But then, you know,
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: when you've got like... And that's the worst part of
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: being a full-on face bird human.
- 1:35:08Speaker 9: Again, tech geek.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: Moment when I'm like, we mentioned the sound, but that's
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: the part when I'm like, oh my god, the sound
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: needs to be leveled out. Because you can't hear what
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: they're saying.
- 1:35:18Speaker 11: No, there's times where they're like.
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: The sound effect for the assault rifle is so fucking
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: loud that I'm like, you're blasting that and then two
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: seconds you're like wait what'd he say so if you're
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: like if you're at home you're trying to turn it
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: down because like you're waking neighbors up with your assault
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: rifle noises but then two seconds later there's this bad
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: muffled mic from across the room that can't pick up
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: anything they're saying so you're like okay wait I gotta
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: turn it back up again and then they start firing
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: guns but then you realize you really missed nothing you're
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: like you realize well at least he's giving me something
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: to do now instead of just focusing on this story
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: it's interactive this is an interactive it's an interactive movie
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: So they go to the lighthouse, and they find that
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: their friend with the Asian girlfriend is dead. Which, by
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: the way, we all really should just imagine peace. Yes,
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: imagine peace. She was really into imagine peace. She was
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: selling it.
- 1:36:12Speaker 11: Someone was up with that song.
- 1:36:14Speaker 5: Isn't there a song that was like a John Lennon
- 1:36:16Speaker 5: kind of imagine thing?
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: It was a ripoff of imagine, but that came after
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: they were actually on the bed.
- 1:36:23Speaker 9: In the hotel room earlier in the movie. With the
- 1:36:25Speaker 9: blatant poster behind her.
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: With the imaginepeace.org poster in the background. Do you know
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: that is, it's not just ripping off Imagine the song,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: that is Yoko Ono's website.
- 1:36:39Speaker 11: Imagine Peace?
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:36:40Speaker 5: I didn't know that.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: But I'm like, is he, again, is Yoko kicking in
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: on making this movie, damn it? Because you're broke, obviously.
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: She got a little more money than you. She's still
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: getting John's residuals. For God's sakes, cut him a check, Yoko.
- 1:36:51Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: So yeah, he's blatantly shoving this message down your throat,
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: even to the point where like, doesn't Imagine Peace have
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: better looking posters? Like you made that up yourself, much
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: like her t-shirt at the end. I'm like, that looks
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: like you went to the mall in 1984 and had
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: her t-shirt made.
- 1:37:08Speaker 9: Like why do they look so ghetto?
- 1:37:10Speaker 11: So really it's a time traveler thing.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I feel like shouldn't Yoko have kicked in a free
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: t-shirt and a poster for you guys? You're promoting her.
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: Are you going to? I'm looking it up right now.
- 1:37:20Speaker 5: Consulting the Google box?
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: We're going to the Google box. Imaginepeace.com, not org. I
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: believe that's what it said, yep. Imaginepeace.com.
- 1:37:29Speaker 9: Imagine all the people living a life in peace.
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: Heard that before. Without birds. Et cetera, et cetera. So,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: once again. Yeah, anyway. I just thought that was a
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: weird little... plug for no reason because at first I
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: was like is this like a tie into his own
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: like is this really a bigger like green thing like
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: I really kind of there were moments when it got
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: super preachy and they had a website blatantly like shoved
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: down your throat I was like is it actually like
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: someone had this organization was like oh we need to
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: call attention to our like super green eco organization let's
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: make this bad movie and like sneak in all this
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: other stuff that along the way you're like oh i
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: do want to go to imaginepeace.com which worked because you
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: just did so like i guess it wasn't but it
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: almost feels like it should be like at least then
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: you'd be like oh well that's why it's so clunky
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: is they weren't really trying to make a movie they
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: were trying to get this message out there and the
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: movie is the Sheep's clothing that the wolf is sneaking
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: in with. It's a bird. It's a bird in sheep's clothing.
- 1:38:29Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: Makes more sense.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it does.
- 1:38:32Speaker 9: Or a sheep in bird's... Or wolf in bird's clothing.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: A bird that ate.
- 1:38:36Speaker 11: A sheep in.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: It's a turducken. A wolf that ate the sheep and
- 1:38:38Speaker 1: the bird.
- 1:38:39Speaker 11: Isn't that the thing where you put a turkey.
- 1:38:41Speaker 14: In a duck?
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: Wolf, sheep, bird. That's as smooth as some of our dialogue.
- 1:38:48Speaker 5: So.
- 1:38:49Speaker 1: It's a wolf sheep.
- 1:38:50Speaker 9: So we get to the end. Now, we're at the end.
- 1:38:54Speaker 11: And the doves show up.
- 1:38:55Speaker 1: And then the doves show up. And now, I briefly
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: zoned out. Were you on Pinterest? I like that there's
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: a lot of this going on. Just as the doves arrived.
- 1:39:06Speaker 10: I zoned out as the doves arrived.
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: So how... Exactly. Does that happen? How do the doves arrive?
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: The more ineffective moment is I don't know that I
- 1:39:19Speaker 1: realized those were different than the rest of the birds. No,
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: they just look like smaller animals. That's important. Yeah, I'm like,
- 1:39:25Speaker 1: that's kind of a key factor if that's the way
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: he's trying to end this movie. So I'm like... wouldn't
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: you make sure this looks very different and like you
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: tint them super white or.
- 1:39:34Speaker 11: Like yeah but they were just like a smaller version.
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: Yeah it was the same program that he just kind
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: of sized it down a little bit and i was
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: like i just thought we're looking at more birds and
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: now they're flying.
- 1:39:44Speaker 11: Out to sea and they're not moving.
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: Because it's actually seagulls birds live in the ocean And
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: that's why they're going home now. Like, why would they
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: be going out to sea? You're going to die.
- 1:39:55Speaker 9: And they go out to sea for a very long time.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: To dive in and get in their submarine. Underwater birds.
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: The evil submarine, because that's where the hawks, or the
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: vultures and the eagles live. The vultures are really the
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: overlords that are down in the submarine running things, and
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: they're calling the shots.
- 1:40:13Speaker 9: The evil bird.
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: God, this just got weird.
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: Underwater breakdown.
- 1:40:20Speaker 10: So, yeah, and the doves show up to save us
- 1:40:24Speaker 10: all from that by forcing the eagles and the vultures
- 1:40:29Speaker 10: down into their evil submarine.
- 1:40:32Speaker 5: And then the hawks come and screw it all up
- 1:40:34Speaker 5: because they don't take any shit.
- 1:40:36Speaker 1: What about... No, I mean, that was weird.
- 1:40:38Speaker 5: That was just weird.
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: Well, again, it's like, I can't really think of a
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: way to end this movie, so let's just kind of
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: make it like, oh, it's It's over now. It's kind
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: of a happy ending, right? The iceberg showed up. I
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: guess that's what really bothered me. That's what bothered me.
- 1:40:54Speaker 1: I could have looked past all the other stuff if
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: they had ended it like... You know, oh, you know,
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: he goes through all this stuff to save the girl
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: and then the girl ends up dying or something.
- 1:41:08Speaker 10: And then he has to take these two kids. The
- 1:41:12Speaker 10: two kids who have disappeared at some point.
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: They come back at the end. And they're like, oh,
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: now I have to raise you two kids.
- 1:41:20Speaker 11: That's the European ending.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: To be solo panelists. Salesman. But luckily, they weren't brother
- 1:41:26Speaker 1: and sister, so they can repopulate the earth. Were they
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: not brother and sister? There's only three people. No, because
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: there were different cars. The one was hiding under a car,
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: and the other kid was in a trunk.
- 1:41:35Speaker 9: That's right.
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: The kid was in the trunk. Why was the kid
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: in the trunk? I can't remember that.
- 1:41:39Speaker 9: There was a dad laying.
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: Right in front of the trunk, so I'm like, this
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: was almost decent storytelling. You can then put it together.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: The dad was trying to save the kid. He got
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: him in the trunk, saved the kid, and got attacked
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: by birds and died. That's better storytelling. Or the guy
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: was abducting the kid, and he got killed, and then
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: the kid went up.
- 1:41:58Speaker 5: In the trunk.
- 1:41:58Speaker 9: So the birds are the heroes in this.
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: Sweet bird justice. Nice.
- 1:42:02Speaker 9: The birds are the heroes.
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: So were they evil? Were they wrong?
- 1:42:06Speaker 11: Were the birds so wrong?
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: And that's his question. That's James Wynn's question. As we get,
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: if we want to transfer on over... That's what he
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: keeps asking is like, this is what to him makes
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: this a good story. Not just this relationship that we're building,
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: but the big question is, why do they attack? What
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: makes them attack? Yeah, it's supposed to be... And he
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily have the answer. He keeps posing that to
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: people as like the reason that this movie is a
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: good movie. No. It's because it makes you question why. No,
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: they do. They do tell the... I do. I don't
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: remember much.
- 1:42:43Speaker 9: I do remember it.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: They do tell the reason. Future episode. They do say why.
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: And the answer to our people. But he kept asking
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: that question in the post-world. In the real world. Even
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: though he wrote the movie, it seems like he would
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: know that it's.
- 1:42:56Speaker 6: In the movie.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: But in the movie, he says why. Global warming.
- 1:42:59Speaker 10: He says because global warming and a chain of events,
- 1:43:03Speaker 10: you know, because.
- 1:43:04Speaker 5: Of global warming.
- 1:43:05Speaker 1: That was surgical mask guy and hippie. If he would
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: pronounce it correctly, it would be global warming. global which
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: that's my new warming that's my new buddy cop series
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: that i'm putting out is surgical mask and the hippie
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: so those two are the ones that told us that
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: yeah but i kind of picture a whole side story
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: about those two also on a road trip wait.
- 1:43:25Speaker 11: A minute does the one guy have a pet mount.
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: Lion oh yeah he rides in the back it's like
- 1:43:31Speaker 1: shotgun hippies shotgun Surgical Mask is driving and he will
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: not take off the mask. It really pisses off Hippie.
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: Because he's like, there is no epidemic. Take that off.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: And he's like, no, I have to protect myself. And
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: then in the back is the mountain lion in like
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: a little kitty seat.
- 1:43:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: It's going to be fun. Showrunner. Come on. We call it.
- 1:43:50Speaker 11: What are we calling it?
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: I mean, what's better than Surgical Mask and the Hippie?
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: Surgical Mask and the Hippie.
- 1:43:56Speaker 11: Surgical Mask and the Hippie.
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: I'd tune into that. Come on, guys. Send in your money.
- 1:44:01Speaker 5: Winter is coming. That's great.
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: Winter is coming. That's season two. First season, it's just
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: sort of fall. Second season, winter is coming.
- 1:44:11Speaker 5: Winter is coming.
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: Fuck yeah. The plants come alive. So here's the thing,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: and this is after all the shit talk that we
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: just gave this guy. I afterwards I was like because
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I again I wanted to go in kind of I
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: didn't really like I said know that much about it
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: so I was like I kind of want to go
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: in as clean slate as I can and just watch
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: this for what it is and then make my bitchy
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: comments like I did but then afterwards I was like
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: but I do want to know a little bit more
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: about what this thing is So if you go, there
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: is Evan Husney, I think is his last name. I
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: don't know if he did then, but now he works
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: for Vice and he put out this little short film.
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: He's the guy that got it picked up. He's the reason.
- 1:44:55Speaker 11: He's that behind it.
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: So he's almost responsible, which is what you get to
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: in the end of his little short film is how
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: much he feels responsible. responsible for how this all came about.
- 1:45:04Speaker 1: But he put together this, he actually, it is interesting
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: that he was there from the beginning. Like I thought
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: it was going to be like a little retrospect thing
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: that Vice put together. but like way after the fact
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: when it became a big cult hit this guy met
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: him before like he'd made the movie but before any
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: of this happened because he's driving around sunday he didn't
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: get accepted into sundance he drove around so he drove
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: around with a bird stuck on the side of his
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: car and these hand-drawn signs misspelled mind you with the
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: name of his own movie and like was handing out
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: flyers for like hey instead like he got him to
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: play it at a bar or something and he was
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: like giving people flyers come on over and watch my
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: movie kind of thing and this guy met him that
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: night and like was shooting pictures of him in the
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: car so they have all this like background stuff from
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: that far back in the thing and then they have
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: pictures of him and his friend go there that night
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: and see the movie that he was advertising and immediately
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: is just like this is the story to tell right here.
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: I'm going to make a documentary. This is it. So
- 1:46:03Speaker 1: like these, these starts with these two guys and eventually this,
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: this guy kind of continues on for years doing this
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: run with him that like, then he like, because of him,
- 1:46:13Speaker 1: like it ends up kind of getting picked up by
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: this little distributor and then it gets all this attention
- 1:46:18Speaker 1: and then he goes with him and kind of documents
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: the stuff that's going on. So it's like this little
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: like documentary kind of thing is only about 26 minutes long,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: but it's got a good window of like, how it
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: comes together a little background then on him so that's
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: the thing as we get into this I'm just like
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: I still kind of was thinking going in like it
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: it may have been more of like a very conscious
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: thing of him like you know at that point sci-fi
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: had already started making those kind of crappy movies so
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: it does you could very easily assume that it was
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: made to be one of those and I think I
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: still had like even then I was like this thing
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: is really bad and like I think I went in
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: assuming that it was made to be a bad movie.
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: And that's why a lot of this stuff kind of
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: falls flat and it doesn't work. Once you get in
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: and you start talking to the director, James Wynn, the
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: man who wrote and created this story, he's a hundred
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: percent earnest about it. And like, I didn't expect that.
- 1:47:13Speaker 1: And you also get in and we pick up with
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: him like way after the fact and we go to
- 1:47:19Speaker 1: his house, but it's, I'm pretty sure it's his parents.
- 1:47:24Speaker 1: And he's got a room there that's his studio that's
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: like an old school Dell that's like where he edited
- 1:47:29Speaker 1: the first movie. Like that's where he did it was
- 1:47:32Speaker 1: actually right there. Screw you, Mac. He doesn't need your
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: editing software. He's doing it the old fashioned way. So
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: I thought, but yeah, I'm like, once you get in
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: and he's got, once again, he's got all these Hitchcock
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: posters on the wall and like little autographed photos of him.
- 1:47:47Speaker 1: Like it's his fucking hero. So like you see all
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: this kind of unfold there and then you see this
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: guy that's like, the the filmmaker evan is like he's
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: watching like in retrospect i guess as he's narrating it
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: going well then the reason all this happens and he
- 1:48:03Speaker 1: gets like this big expectation because you you follow him
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: as he goes to this next level where then it
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: kind of becomes a cult hit and it gets picked
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: up by all this press and like everybody starts talking
- 1:48:14Speaker 1: about it and he's on like the there's a weird
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: little blurb at the bottom of like the la times
- 1:48:19Speaker 1: or something he's like look i'm on the front page
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: and it's like down here like it's like everything about
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: him is like dude you're killing me like this is
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: so depressing the more you get into it because then
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: he's like he really he's like so much oblivious a
- 1:48:35Speaker 1: little bit to what's going on that like, yes, people
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: kind of think it's funny, but he still feels like
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: he made a good movie like forever. He still is
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: like explaining why he thinks it's a good movie. And like,
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: he is aware enough that he's like, there are times
- 1:48:48Speaker 1: when he's like, I believe the budget is $ 10, 000. So,
- 1:48:51Speaker 1: I mean, there are moments when he's like, well, I mean,
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: that's what you get for $ 10, 000. Like he's not stupid.
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: And that's the part. It's like, if he really was
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: just like, this guy's clueless. Like he just doesn't know
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: what's going on. He's just aware enough that he's like,
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: real world like he wanted to have better effects and
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: he's like well this is what i could get but
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: then he kind of convinces himself that those birds look
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: okay like there's like moments when you're like no that's
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: not okay dude like i understand you have no money
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: i understand that but this doesn't look good like so
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: there's that aspect and then you get further into that
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: and again i guess if you don't want to hear
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: it stop now and go watch the actual thing but
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: like at that point he gets like, Warner Brothers gets
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: a hold of him. He's like, we think we want
- 1:49:35Speaker 1: to make the sequel to it. You know, we kind
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: of like what you're doing and it's getting a lot
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: of buzz and we might be interested in putting something together.
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: And again, being completely ignorant about the business, starts, like,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: going on Twitter and announcing that Warner Brothers is going
- 1:49:49Speaker 1: to make the sequel. He goes on talk shows and
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: is telling people they didn't sign a deal. They just
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: said we're kind of interested. We're kind of interested. So
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: that kills it. And, like, already he's like, he may
- 1:49:59Speaker 1: not have gotten it anyway, but he definitely liked totally
- 1:50:02Speaker 1: sank the whole idea with this constant building it up
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: and running. Like you don't talk about shit like that
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: in Hollywood. That is not how their system works. And
- 1:50:10Speaker 1: he's just so outside the system. He doesn't even know that.
- 1:50:12Speaker 1: So he screws himself on that one. And then at
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: some point, like he's going in, like somebody eventually backs
- 1:50:19Speaker 1: him to make the sequel. So there is that sequel,
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: which I'm kind of interested, but then the more I
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: hear about it, it's like, he also kind of loses
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: control of it. It still doesn't have much of a budget.
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: The effects still look bad, but now everybody else in
- 1:50:32Speaker 1: it is self-aware because of the first movie. So there
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: isn't any earnestness anymore. It's just a sci-fi bad movie
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: made to be a bad movie. So now it's kind
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: of lost that. And he lost control of a lot.
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: Like even he's like, that's not the movie I wanted
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: to make. So now it's like, even the bad sequel
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: isn't what he wanted. So he's going in like, okay,
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: I've got my hopes up. Like maybe we can make
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: a third one. And like, I can finally make the
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: one I want to make. And now it'll get picked up.
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: So like, the i think again i think maybe it's
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: the director of this short film that's like gets him
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: a deal with this like agent or it's somebody in
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: hollywood that kind of knows the system and he's in
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: there again just so oblivious he's just like well you
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: know i i wanted you know like 20 30 million
- 1:51:13Speaker 1: dollars i want to put that into this third movie
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: and really make it the big thing i've always and
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: he's like yeah i don't like i mean it just
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: He's trying, he knows he's on camera. So it's kind
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: of like the, the James is kind of like trying
- 1:51:26Speaker 1: to keep it together, but like, you can see him
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: like just being deflated every, the guy's trying to be
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: as nice as he can, but like, yeah, I don't
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: see that happening. And like, even if somebody gave you
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: like $ 10 million, like there's no way you'd be able
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: to get them what they need. And like, I mean,
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: he's just putting it as nicely as possible, but there's
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: no way this is going to happen. So like you're
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: walking out of this business meeting with him and he's
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: just kind of like, well, that was good. And he
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: had some good information for me and some advice. And
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: I'm just like, oh my God, this is killing me. So,
- 1:52:01Speaker 1: I mean, as we get into it, like you also see,
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: and that's why it's interesting why you've got our Evan,
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: the filmmaker that's just shooting this documentary going, I kind
- 1:52:10Speaker 1: of created this. Like none of this would have happened.
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: He wouldn't have had this good thing happened that then
- 1:52:16Speaker 1: also built him up that like, Oh, now I get
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: to be, you know, I have this dream of being
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: a big filmmaker and now like, I'm kind of a joke.
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: And the only thing I'm known for is this movie
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: that people make fun of. And like, I'm still not
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: going to get to do what I want to do.
- 1:52:29Speaker 1: Like everything just kind of falls flat for him. And
- 1:52:33Speaker 1: I'm assuming he's still like, again, by the end, like
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: nothing is fixed. And like, you feel so bad for
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: this dude. And what's worse is I'm sitting there going, wow,
- 1:52:44Speaker 1: I feel a lot like James. Like, I really, like,
- 1:52:49Speaker 1: I am pulling parallels like right and left and I'm like,
- 1:52:52Speaker 1: son of a bitch.
- 1:52:53Speaker 9: I'm like.
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: Yeah, nothing's really working out, and I keep throwing myself
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: at doing this thing that I think is really cool
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: and effective, and maybe I'm just blind to the fact
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: that nobody else cares about it. But it's true. It
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: is one of those, you watch how much it does
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: not click with him. He still thinks he made a
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: good movie. He still thinks he's going to be a
- 1:53:17Speaker 1: big director in Hollywood. And I'm like, you wonder at
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: that point how deluded... are you about your own life?
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: When you're like the shit that I want to do,
- 1:53:27Speaker 1: that's important to me. And I think I'm, I'm doing
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: a good job with, it only takes one little pivot
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: on the other side. And you're like, Whoa, you're way off. Like,
- 1:53:36Speaker 1: and you don't necessarily ever see that. So it's like,
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: there are those moments when I'm like, this guy's really
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: loves film and he loves what he's trying to do.
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: And it's just not working out for him. And odds
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: are it's not gonna work out for him. And is
- 1:53:51Speaker 1: he ever really going to admit that to himself? So
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: there is that moment where I'm just like, oh, fuck.
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: I'm killing myself trying to keep this dumb show together
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: that nobody cares about.
- 1:54:01Speaker 5: I'm James.
- 1:54:02Speaker 9: Yeah, but we're all James.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: And that was it. I'm like, to some extent, we
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: kind of all are. But I'm like, it is one
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: of those. And that's why I was like earlier, I
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: was like, and I'll come back around to that. Like,
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: I guess the moral of it all is. do what
- 1:54:18Speaker 1: you want to do. And I guess don't set your
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: hopes that like you're going to be super successful about
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: it all. And hopefully you're just making what you want
- 1:54:25Speaker 1: to make and find a way to get by. Cause that's,
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: that becomes the hard part is trying to do what
- 1:54:30Speaker 1: you love and even break even enough to survive. That's
- 1:54:35Speaker 1: the hard part. Yeah.
- 1:54:36Speaker 9: If you, if you were doing what you.
- 1:54:40Speaker 10: Half of what you want to do and people pay
- 1:54:43Speaker 10: you handsomely.
- 1:54:44Speaker 9: For it, You're a lucky motherfucker.
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:54:48Speaker 9: That is like a unicorn that, you know.
- 1:54:51Speaker 8: I don't know.
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: Yeah, no, I mean, I think we all struggle with that.
- 1:54:55Speaker 5: You know, especially if you're doing something artistic.
- 1:54:57Speaker 11: I mean, if you're a lawyer or a doctor. You're
- 1:55:00Speaker 11: doing that.
- 1:55:00Speaker 1: Maybe you don't care.
- 1:55:01Speaker 11: I don't think that you have that.
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:55:04Speaker 5: I mean, I can't say that.
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: But even then, even those guys and girls out there,
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: are they him as a software salesman? It's that same thing.
- 1:55:14Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: Are they going through the motions of being a lawyer?
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: But really, I'm like, man, I just want to paint.
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: I just want to go into ballet.
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: And even in that, there's like... oh, well, I'm a
- 1:55:26Speaker 5: lawyer at whatever, but I really want to be a
- 1:55:28Speaker 5: lawyer here because I'm a joke as a lawyer at whatever.
- 1:55:32Speaker 11: You know, so I mean, I think it's, everybody goes
- 1:55:34Speaker 11: through it.
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: I think so.
- 1:55:35Speaker 11: But yeah, you're right.
- 1:55:36Speaker 5: The main thing is, and that's what I thought about
- 1:55:38Speaker 5: that movie, is it was pretty earnest and like, dude,
- 1:55:41Speaker 5: if this is your thing.
- 1:55:42Speaker 11: Then do it.
- 1:55:43Speaker 5: And I can be shitty and laugh about something, but
- 1:55:45Speaker 5: I can't be shitty about somebody. Yeah.
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: I won't lie. I still think it's a bad movie.
- 1:55:51Speaker 1: But again, it's like you almost need to watch the
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: documentary beforehand and you will see an entirely different movie.
- 1:55:57Speaker 5: But I feel like it's a bad movie because I'm like,
- 1:56:00Speaker 5: I'm not a filmmaker, but I've watched enough movies to
- 1:56:02Speaker 5: know that I should probably do something different than that. Right.
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: And maybe that's it. Maybe it also is encouraging to
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: be like, okay, this is what you want to do.
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: you got to put a good amount of work into it.
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: Maybe beforehand, like maybe you need to figure out some
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: of the least basics of what you need to do
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: and how you need to get the message across of
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: whatever your art form is and get it out there
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: to people so that it lands and isn't kind of
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: weird and awkward all the time. I think this is
- 1:56:29Speaker 1: what I, to, to get back to fundamentals.
- 1:56:34Speaker 10: I think this is exactly what I like about bad
- 1:56:37Speaker 10: film in, in that, it's very pure it is it's
- 1:56:43Speaker 10: very pure and it it is so honest yeah and
- 1:56:49Speaker 10: that is all that you get is this uh you're
- 1:56:52Speaker 10: you're getting an honest story poorly told.
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: Perhaps but you know you're you're you're getting it honestly
- 1:57:01Speaker 1: told you i mean and it's super again i say
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: it's it's it's Also very pure in an artistic sense,
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: even if you're a little better at it. That's, again,
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: to draw from a recent episode, talking about a really
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: early movie with John Waters, they didn't know what the
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: hell they were doing. Again, I keep asking him this stuff,
- 1:57:21Speaker 1: and he's just like, permits? We just shot out on
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: the street and then ran away when the cops came.
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: You see, watching stuff like that always amazes me, too, because...
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: It's so pure and raw in its own weird way
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: that it really was.
- 1:57:35Speaker 5: But there's still an understanding of how it all works.
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: But, I mean, even he was calling himself out for
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: some of these. Like, that shot shouldn't have been in there. So, like,
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: he's learning, too. Like, it is a learning experience.
- 1:57:46Speaker 11: But, you know, like, there's a whole, like, outsider art thing, right? Like,
- 1:57:50Speaker 11: it was a thing on its own, and then it became.
- 1:57:54Speaker 11: Like the sci-fi channel.
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: But even going back to something like Multiple Maniacs was
- 1:58:00Speaker 1: the one he was shooting then. And I'm like, that
- 1:58:02Speaker 1: is like amazing almost because it just captures this time
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: and place and like Maybe that's why I'm more encouraging
- 1:58:09Speaker 1: of like, you go hang out with your friends and
- 1:58:11Speaker 1: shoot stuff because that's all he was doing. And he really,
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: I'm guessing, didn't have any aspirations that it was gonna
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: go win him an Oscar or make millions of dollars
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: because of as weird as it was. He was self-aware
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: enough to know it's me and my weird friends and
- 1:58:26Speaker 1: this is what we decided to do with our time.
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: But like, I think it's very honest about what it
- 1:58:31Speaker 1: wants to be and about who these people are. Even
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: if they're playing, again, slight variation characters but they're still
- 1:58:38Speaker 1: kind of his weird friends and that's a lot of
- 1:58:41Speaker 1: what was you know really going on in that scene
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: so they made up a story but it does such
- 1:58:45Speaker 1: a great job of like capturing this time and place
- 1:58:48Speaker 1: and who his friends were and the kind of stuff
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: that was going on around them at that point in
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: time so it's like i love that kind of stuff
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: so i'm like that's the kind of stuff you need
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: to focus on whether or not you need to put
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: exploding birds in it Like, that's the part when I'm like,
- 1:59:02Speaker 1: just go, like, make your stuff and make it pure
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: and good in your eyes. And, like, hopefully it's not,
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: you know, laughed at by everyone. But even if it is,
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: fuck them. So we return to Birdemic, which is completely
- 1:59:17Speaker 1: lacking in any kind of character depth or... But he tried.
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: He tried. But he tried.
- 1:59:23Speaker 5: But.
- 1:59:24Speaker 10: That's one of those things that if you don't know
- 1:59:27Speaker 10: that fundamental, right, the fundamental of storytelling, which is development
- 1:59:32Speaker 10: of the character and so that the audience cares about
- 1:59:36Speaker 10: who's in peril, then, you know, there's no point in it.
- 1:59:41Speaker 5: But.
- 1:59:42Speaker 1: I still enjoyed it. I still enjoyed it. That's the thing.
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: Once again, it almost backfired on him because it became
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: a cult hit. I feel like if it was one
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: of those, he made it out of pocket, I'm sure,
- 1:59:54Speaker 1: and then nothing came of it, it is one of
- 1:59:57Speaker 1: those much like John looking back at his friends. James
- 2:00:00Speaker 1: can look back and be like, oh yeah, this was
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: my friend Johnny and he worked in the convenience store.
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: It is still just him shooting this weird idea that
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: he came up with so if it was just him
- 2:00:10Speaker 1: and his friends and 20 years sitting around looking at
- 2:00:13Speaker 1: it like it would still be kind of amazing it's
- 2:00:16Speaker 1: just it's the sad part is only that it became
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: a joke and it got his hopes up really high
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: that he could get to do more and so far
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: he hasn't.
- 2:00:23Speaker 5: Been able to yeah i mean what's worse like just
- 2:00:26Speaker 5: making the cool thing that you had fun with or
- 2:00:28Speaker 5: making the thing that people start to laugh at you
- 2:00:30Speaker 5: don't realize that the joke is on you.
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: Or is it, again, is it better to just get
- 2:00:35Speaker 1: by and have low expectations and have them delivered upon,
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: you know, to actually do what little goals you set
- 2:00:43Speaker 1: for yourself? Or do you, like, reach the summit and, like,
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: you are the biggest thing in the world in your
- 2:00:48Speaker 1: little cult movie world and then just plummet to the
- 2:00:52Speaker 1: other end and never get it back again?
- 2:00:54Speaker 5: Because it goes back to what you said.
- 2:00:56Speaker 11: You cannot make a cult.
- 2:00:58Speaker 1: You can't. Film on purpose. I mean, it's pretty damn
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: hard to even make something that's self-aware that works for me.
- 2:01:04Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:01:04Speaker 1: There's a few that are at least trying to do
- 2:01:07Speaker 1: that and are smart enough and write it really well.
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: And it creates kind of something else, I feel like.
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: But to do something like make a bad movie on purpose,
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: I feel like that never works right.
- 2:01:18Speaker 5: Yeah, it's contrived.
- 2:01:19Speaker 1: You can't do that.
- 2:01:20Speaker 5: It's weird.
- 2:01:22Speaker 1: So do what you love, people. that's our sappy ass
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: message but.
- 2:01:27Speaker 5: It's true we're old enough to know that the things
- 2:01:30Speaker 5: that we care about probably most people.
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: Don't I certainly know that I was.
- 2:01:34Speaker 5: Thinking about something Paul did and I thought it was
- 2:01:38Speaker 5: totally genius and then I thought well you know I'm
- 2:01:41Speaker 5: kind of a weirdo like not intentionally and not whatever
- 2:01:44Speaker 5: but I've noticed that I tend to like things that
- 2:01:47Speaker 5: most people don't seem to pick up on.
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: Paul's a good example actually I mean, again, I go
- 2:01:54Speaker 1: back to how far back I know you, but originally
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: that came from a musical endeavor. How many years later
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: is it and you're still putting music together?
- 2:02:04Speaker 9: Have you signed a multi-billion dollar deal?
- 2:02:08Speaker 1: Or are you just doing it because you put together
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: good music and like you actually like have good songs to,
- 2:02:15Speaker 1: you know, pass along to people. You're telling a story
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: in your own way. Well, the jury's still out on that.
- 2:02:22Speaker 1: But it's not because I've heard it. You do have
- 2:02:25Speaker 1: legitimately good stuff, and whether or not it makes millions
- 2:02:28Speaker 1: of dollars or not, the stuff is there, and you've
- 2:02:31Speaker 1: captured it, and you've created it.
- 2:02:33Speaker 10: That's actually something that I did want to talk about
- 2:02:37Speaker 10: in relation to Birdemic was that it doesn't matter... I
- 2:02:43Speaker 10: don't know what his goal was, but the goal of
- 2:02:48Speaker 10: any artistic endeavor, if it is truly, purely artistic is
- 2:02:55Speaker 10: that you put it out in the world because you're
- 2:02:58Speaker 10: driven to put it out into the world that you're
- 2:03:00Speaker 10: driven to create it and that you're driven to, um,
- 2:03:06Speaker 10: you know, assemble it in a, you know, artistic way that, that,
- 2:03:12Speaker 10: speaks to you and you hope speaks to other people,
- 2:03:16Speaker 10: but it doesn't have to.
- 2:03:17Speaker 1: You know, you're just taking a risk. You're taking a chance.
- 2:03:21Speaker 1: You're doing it anyway. Or there are a handful of
- 2:03:23Speaker 1: people that it will still always work on. Like, again,
- 2:03:28Speaker 1: I still have... Burdemic worked on me. I have a
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: CD that you put together, like, umpteen years ago that
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: I still listen to. I'm sure it was crap. It's...
- 2:03:37Speaker 1: I disagree. But I'm saying, like, for that, like, again,
- 2:03:40Speaker 1: there are probably a lot of people listening that don't
- 2:03:42Speaker 1: have that CD. But I do, and I still listen
- 2:03:44Speaker 1: to it, and I still think it's good. I still
- 2:03:47Speaker 1: have a couple of Gina's paintings that I'm... when I
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: find a home because I'm poor and broke like James,
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: I'm going to hang them back on the wall. Like
- 2:03:55Speaker 1: once again, even if you're not creating new paintings now,
- 2:03:58Speaker 1: all that stuff you did somewhere along the way, found
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: it to people and it's probably still hanging in someone's
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: home and they care about it. Like there are parts
- 2:04:07Speaker 1: of this artistic endeavors that we do that I still
- 2:04:11Speaker 1: reach people. Like even if you're not super successful about it,
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: if you reach these individual people, it still works. Your
- 2:04:18Speaker 1: mission is accomplished whether you made money on it or not.
- 2:04:21Speaker 1: It's like if it reaches even a couple of people,
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: it's working on some level. The goal is to communicate.
- 2:04:27Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, you don't put stuff out there
- 2:04:29Speaker 5: because you think you're going to be a.
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: I hope not. And again, it's like I don't think
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: we think about that sometimes, especially the industry that Hollywood is.
- 2:04:37Speaker 1: It's like you're still... It's not making money. He didn't
- 2:04:41Speaker 1: get signed to a $ 30 million deal after this. So
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: it does seem like, oh, now it's a failure. But
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: how many people saw this movie? Like, how many people...
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: How many people get to make a movie? That's what
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: I'm saying. How many people make a bad movie on
- 2:04:53Speaker 1: their computer at home and then maybe they put it
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: up on YouTube now, but even then, how many of
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: them have 200 hits on YouTube versus how many people
- 2:05:02Speaker 1: have seen this guy's movie? Whether they think it's bad
- 2:05:04Speaker 1: or not, how many people did he reach with this
- 2:05:06Speaker 1: concept that he had that got out there to people?
- 2:05:09Speaker 9: Like, it's impressive, really.
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: It's kind of like the same with music.
- 2:05:13Speaker 5: Yeah, are we reaching a time when.
- 2:05:16Speaker 5: The common man, woman, woman, can make a movie.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: I want to make a movie. I'm going to make one.
- 2:05:22Speaker 1: Who cares?
- 2:05:22Speaker 11: I'm going to put it out there.
- 2:05:24Speaker 5: You know, I mean, it's a cool time.
- 2:05:25Speaker 1: It really is.
- 2:05:26Speaker 5: You can be whatever you want. You can be an
- 2:05:28Speaker 5: accountant and a movie maker. You can work at Kroger,
- 2:05:31Speaker 5: like cutting ham, and you can make a movie.
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: I mean, that's awesome. Massaging ham. I'm going to job
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: massaging ham. I think that's a movie right there. Yeah,
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: it could be a movie. It's probably for the internet, too.
- 2:05:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: On a very special site but you know what I'm
- 2:05:43Speaker 1: saying that we should start right now I feel.
- 2:05:45Speaker 5: Like it's fun to make fun of bad movies but
- 2:05:48Speaker 5: you know I applaud people for putting it out there
- 2:05:50Speaker 5: and doing it.
- 2:05:51Speaker 1: And the ones that I do respond to the most
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: are the most earnest ones like and that's why I
- 2:05:57Speaker 1: almost go back when I look at like what are
- 2:06:01Speaker 1: supposed to be bad movies that I really like they're
- 2:06:04Speaker 1: almost always dated like it's rare this is like a
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: really recent one as far as bad movies go but
- 2:06:10Speaker 1: like When I look at ones that I love, it's
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: like stuff from the 80s or the 70s where they're
- 2:06:15Speaker 1: super unaware of how cheesy this stuff is that's going
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: on as far as special effects, if you even have those.
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: But that kind of stuff, to me, becomes endearing as
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: time goes on. Yeah, absolutely. So, I mean, maybe, again,
- 2:06:30Speaker 1: maybe if we fast forward another 20 years and you
- 2:06:32Speaker 1: look back at these horrible bird animations... it's going to
- 2:06:35Speaker 1: be like 8-bit graphics. Now people love 8-bit bullshit. It's
- 2:06:39Speaker 1: like the 8-bit music, 8-bit graphics are now so beloved
- 2:06:44Speaker 1: by weird kids that didn't even play it originally because
- 2:06:47Speaker 1: they're too young. It's the same thing.
- 2:06:50Speaker 5: It's like liking Captain Beefheart when you're a kid.
- 2:06:53Speaker 10: I'd like to point out in the early 1960s, Attack
- 2:06:58Speaker 10: of the Killer Shrews, starring James Best.
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: Exactly. TV's Roscoe P. Coltrane. I met that man briefly,
- 2:07:05Speaker 1: right before he died.
- 2:07:07Speaker 10: And he was in a movie called Attack of the
- 2:07:09Speaker 10: Killer Shrews, and they had these giant killer shrews that
- 2:07:14Speaker 10: were actually dogs that had these.
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: Dogs with a fur coat strapped to their head.
- 2:07:18Speaker 9: Fur coat tied to their body.
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. And they would attack. Very obvious, that's what
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: it is. It was so... It was such horrible, obvious
- 2:07:29Speaker 1: special effects, but it was still riveting for the storytelling
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: and it worked and it was still cool.
- 2:07:35Speaker 5: I think I feel that way about Motel Hill.
- 2:07:39Speaker 1: Motel Hill? Again, all of these decades were so like,
- 2:07:44Speaker 1: innocent in a way like motel hell was something i
- 2:07:47Speaker 1: watched as a kid which explains why i am the
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: way now i would watch it anytime it was all
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: that crap on cable that i should not have been
- 2:07:53Speaker 1: watching i was watching every night It is one of those.
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: It's just a weird, earnest, we want to make this
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: weird story. Nobody questioned them back then. Now I think
- 2:08:03Speaker 1: everything boils down so much to money. I mean, I
- 2:08:07Speaker 1: guess Hollywood's always been like that. But it seemed like
- 2:08:09Speaker 1: they used to let you take a shot sometimes back then,
- 2:08:12Speaker 1: where now, if anything happens now, it's because you're doing
- 2:08:15Speaker 1: it yourself on your iPhone. Like, it's rare that studios
- 2:08:17Speaker 1: are going to get behind something that weird. Same for
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: music industry, too. Yeah, that's true. They used to take
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: way more chances.
- 2:08:24Speaker 10: Now it's down to an.
- 2:08:26Speaker 1: Algorithm, right?
- 2:08:27Speaker 9: If you don't fall into the category, then I'm sorry.
- 2:08:30Speaker 5: Movies and music, at least now there's the ability to
- 2:08:33Speaker 5: do it on your own.
- 2:08:34Speaker 1: Way more than there ever was. So now you just
- 2:08:38Speaker 1: do it by yourself.
- 2:08:38Speaker 11: And who cares if it sucks?
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: Just put it out there. Yeah. I mean, that is
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: a good example, though. I mean, think how many people
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: were in bands. Like, in high school, I was in
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: a band. And you think back on it and, like,
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: if you play the music now, maybe the person who
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: was even in the band is like, oh, that's terrible.
- 2:08:53Speaker 1: But those, like, times that they had may be the
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: best times of their life. You know, it's like you
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: do have these tie-ins to whatever you were involved in
- 2:09:02Speaker 1: back in the day that, like, were creative outlets for you.
- 2:09:06Speaker 1: And maybe you went on to become a lawyer or something. But, like,
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: it does have this, like, special place. For you, and
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: this experience turned you into who you are. So I'm like,
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: maybe James, he's going to be a cool, better dude
- 2:09:19Speaker 1: down the line. This was like a growing experience. I hope,
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: and I hope that he makes.
- 2:09:24Speaker 9: 20 more movies, honestly.
- 2:09:27Speaker 1: Is the third one supposed to be the sea eagles
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: or was that the same? Yeah, that's what he keeps. Okay,
- 2:09:31Speaker 1: so then that's it. Even in this documentary thing, he
- 2:09:33Speaker 1: keeps going up. That's the one he wants like $ 10
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: million and he wants a big studio to back.
- 2:09:38Speaker 5: Which answers why the eagles are going out to sea.
- 2:09:40Speaker 1: Because, you know, sea eagles. Sea eagles. Sea eagles. We
- 2:09:43Speaker 1: have to salute when we say that. Sea eagles. Sea eagles.
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: Sea eagles. So, yeah. Steven Seegers. Which, that's, again, back
- 2:09:52Speaker 1: to being kind of sad. Like, the second movie is
- 2:09:54Speaker 1: the last thing he's done, according to IMDb. Like, he didn't,
- 2:09:57Speaker 1: so far, as of this recording, he has not made
- 2:10:00Speaker 1: a third one. He's also just not made another movie
- 2:10:03Speaker 1: since then on IMDb. So, I'm like, that's the part
- 2:10:06Speaker 1: that gets kind of sad is when You have all
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: these aspirations and the world beats them out of you.
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: That like you just continue to be not successful or you.
- 2:10:16Speaker 9: Don't get to do the things you want to do.
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: I know. And it's the sad freaking part of the story.
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: Life sucks.
- 2:10:23Speaker 10: The problem is that you listen to the rest of
- 2:10:26Speaker 10: the world.
- 2:10:28Speaker 5: It is.
- 2:10:28Speaker 1: You have to stop. paying attention to the rest of
- 2:10:31Speaker 1: the world and look at you.
- 2:10:34Speaker 11: Want to do you have to be the fool like
- 2:10:36Speaker 11: ready to walk.
- 2:10:37Speaker 10: You have to be the fool absolutely yeah until you
- 2:10:40Speaker 10: were suddenly not the fool so flip.
- 2:10:43Speaker 1: That card over and that's right maybe it's death yeah
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: that's fine but that just means change sweet good sweet
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: death it's a change for you and you'll go on
- 2:10:53Speaker 1: and you'll become an accountant or a guitar player you'll
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: do whatever the hell you want to do and who
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: cares what people think yeah including us amen so everything
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: we just said never mind all that all those horrible
- 2:11:07Speaker 1: things we said about the movie never.
- 2:11:08Speaker 11: Mind yeah no i don't want to say horrible things.
- 2:11:10Speaker 1: Except for that part that where you do what you
- 2:11:13Speaker 1: want to do that's important that's take that with do
- 2:11:16Speaker 1: that do that and wear a bikini to grow oh.
- 2:11:19Speaker 22: Yeah wear a bikini if there's oh and imagine peace
- 2:11:23Speaker 22: If there's anybody that wants to volunteer for that, send photos,
- 2:11:27Speaker 22: and I can probably do it.
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 2:11:31Speaker 11: You're looking for grindies?
- 2:11:33Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I'm much like the movie. I'm also
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: not taking my clothes off, so nobody wants that. BikiniPromotion.com.
- 2:11:42Speaker 1: Doing you all a favor.

- 2:20:11Speaker 1: all of the fun you can have with a sheet
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: with a hole.
- 2:20:13Speaker 11: No, it's just a sheet with a hole every day
- 2:20:15Speaker 11: that you take a picture of.
- 2:20:17Speaker 1: The same one. Yeah. But are there other things on
- 2:20:21Speaker 1: the side of the sheet with a hole?
- 2:20:23Speaker 8: Maybe.
- 2:20:23Speaker 1: Okay, wait, wait, wait. I think I've got it. Maybe
- 2:20:25Speaker 1: you take the sheet with a hole out into the
- 2:20:27Speaker 1: world and every day you take a picture of it,
- 2:20:29Speaker 1: but where you are, you get different things behind the hole.
- 2:20:33Speaker 15: Or in the hole Or climbing through the hole So
- 2:20:37Speaker 15: we went to the grocery store yesterday We were at
- 2:20:40Speaker 15: the grocery store every day For some reason And there
- 2:20:43Speaker 15: was a guy picking out bananas Two hours later Another
- 2:20:47Speaker 15: woman and.
- 2:20:47Speaker 10: A guy And they're all standing there Gina rolls up
- 2:20:52Speaker 10: and she gets her banana And she goes, oh, here's
- 2:20:54Speaker 10: the banana I grab it and I put it in
- 2:20:56Speaker 10: the basket And she's out And we're still wandering around
- 2:21:01Speaker 10: And we're like, okay, let's see Let's see what else
- 2:21:04Speaker 10: we need.
- 2:21:04Speaker 1: Maybe some squash, maybe some avocados, whatever. Eight hours later.
- 2:21:09Speaker 9: I got to tell you, he's my favorite Kroger guy.
- 2:21:13Speaker 11: More than belligerent meat guy?
- 2:21:15Speaker 10: He's way better than belligerent meat guy. He's like the
- 2:21:18Speaker 10: guy that narrates your exit.
- 2:21:20Speaker 1: From the Kroger.
- 2:21:22Speaker 10: He tells you everything that you purchased, and more so,
- 2:21:28Speaker 10: and more.
- 2:21:30Speaker 9: With more feeling and gusto than the automated teller.
- 2:21:34Speaker 1: You scan.
- 2:21:36Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: She gets sassy.
- 2:21:39Speaker 5: But we have the belligerent meat guy, so you ask
- 2:21:41Speaker 5: for something and he's like.
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: Well, yeah. Oh, God. Eyes crossing. I guess I can
- 2:21:48Speaker 1: massage this ham, but it's really creepy that you're asking me.
- 2:21:52Speaker 5: I need you to massage that ham, sir.
