- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday, it's the 6th
- 0:16of February and welcome, welcome to our opportunity to press
- 0:21pause on the busy world as it whirls around its axis and we
- 0:27can read the Bible together. The other great way to pause the
- 0:30world is drinking cups of tea, but that might not be your cup
- 0:35of tea. But irrespective, here we are
- 0:38with another great way to force the world, which is asking God,
- 0:42Spirit, Holy Spirit, still our hearts, still our minds, that we
- 0:49can come before you hear your words and learn more about you,
- 0:54your character and your kingship in our life.
- 1:02And this friends, this is proof that this author is not
- 1:05particularly sentimental. Because Pearl Samuel is the
- 1:08titular character of this whole book and he dies in today's
- 1:12reading, and his death is given just two sentences.
- 1:16It's quick. And then on it goes with the
- 1:19story of David, who the narrative is now focusing
- 1:22around. So having said all that, let us
- 1:24read together, friends, First Samuel, Chapter 25.
- 1:38Now Samuel died and all Israel gathered for his funeral.
- 1:43They buried him at his house in Ramah.
- 1:47Then David moved down to the wilderness of Mayon.
- 1:51There was a wealthy man from Mayon who owned property near
- 1:54the town of Carmel. He had 3000 sheep and 1000
- 1:58goats, and it was a sheep shearing time.
- 2:01This man's name was Nabal, and his wife Abigail was a sensible
- 2:05and beautiful woman. But Nabil, a descendant of
- 2:09Caleb, was crude and mean in all his dealings.
- 2:13When David heard that Nabel was shearing his sheep, he sent ten
- 2:17of his young men to Carmel. With this message for Nabel,
- 2:20peace and prosperity to you, your family and everything you
- 2:24own. I'm told that it is sheep
- 2:26shearing time while you're shepherd stayed among us near
- 2:30Kabul. We never harmed them and nothing
- 2:33was ever stolen from them. Ask your own men and they will
- 2:37tell you this is true. So would you be kind to us?
- 2:41Since we have come at a time of celebration, please share any
- 2:45provisions you might have on hand with us and your friend
- 2:48David. David's young men gave this
- 2:52message to Nabil in David's name and they waited for a reply.
- 2:57Who is this fellow David? Nabal sneered to the young men.
- 3:02Who does this son of Jesse think he is?
- 3:04There are lots of servants these days who run away from their
- 3:07masters. Should I take my bread and my
- 3:10water and my meat that I've slaughtered for my shearers and
- 3:14give it to a band of outlaws who come from who knows where?
- 3:19So David's young men returned and told him what Nabil had
- 3:22said. Get your swords, was David's
- 3:26reply as he strapped on his own. Then 400 men started off with
- 3:31David and 200 remained behind to guard their equipment.
- 3:36Meanwhile, one of Nabil's servants went to Abigail and
- 3:39told her David sent messages from the wilderness to greet our
- 3:43master, but he screamed insults at them.
- 3:47These men have been very good to us and we never suffered any
- 3:50harm from them. Nothing was stolen from us the
- 3:53whole time they were with us. In fact, day and night they were
- 3:58like a wall of protection to us and the sheep.
- 4:01You need to know this and figure out what to do, for there is
- 4:05going to be trouble for our master and his whole family.
- 4:08He's so ill tempered that no one can even talk to him.
- 4:13Abigail wasted no time. She quickly gathered 200 loaves
- 4:17of bread, 2 wineskins full of wine, 5 sheep that had been
- 4:21slaughtered, nearly a bushel of roasted grain, 100 clusters of
- 4:26raisins and 200 fig cakes. She packed them on donkeys and
- 4:30said to her servants, Go on ahead, I will follow you
- 4:33shortly. But she didn't tell her husband,
- 4:36Nabel what she was doing. As she was riding her donkey
- 4:40into a mountain ravine, she saw David and his men coming toward
- 4:44her. David had just been saying a lot
- 4:47of good it did to help this fellow.
- 4:49We protected his flocks in the wilderness and nothing he owned
- 4:53was lost or stolen. But he has repaid me evil for
- 4:56good. May God strike me and kill me if
- 4:59even one man of his household is still alive tomorrow morning.
- 5:04When Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her donkey and
- 5:08bowed low before him. She fell at his feet and said, I
- 5:12accept all blame in this matter, my Lord, please listen to what I
- 5:17have to say. I know Nabil is a wicked and ill
- 5:20tempered man. Please don't pay any attention
- 5:23to him. Here's a fool, just as his name
- 5:26suggests, but I never even saw the young men you sent.
- 5:31Now, my Lord, as surely as the Lord lives, and you yourself
- 5:35live, since the Lord has kept you from murdering and taking
- 5:38vengeance into your own hands, let all your enemies and those
- 5:42who try to harm you be cursed as Nabil is.
- 5:45And here is a present that I, your servant, have brought you
- 5:49and your young men. Please forgive me if I have
- 5:52offended you in any way. The Lord will surely reward you
- 5:55with a lasting dynasty, for you are fighting the Lord's battles,
- 6:00and you have not done wrong throughout your entire life,
- 6:05even when you were chased by those who seek to kill you.
- 6:08Your life is safe in the care of the Lord, your God secure in his
- 6:12treasure pouch, but the lives of your enemies will disappear like
- 6:16stones shot from a sling when the Lord has done all He
- 6:20promised and has made you the leader of Israel.
- 6:23Don't let this be a blemish on your record.
- 6:26Then your conscience won't have you bear the staggering burden
- 6:30of needless bloodshed and vengeance.
- 6:32And when the Lord has done these great things for you, Please
- 6:36remember me, your servant David replied to Abigail.
- 6:41Praise the Lord, the God of Israel who has sent you to meet
- 6:46me today. Thank God for your good sense.
- 6:50Bless you for keeping me from murder and from carrying out
- 6:54vengeance with my own hands. For I swear by the Lord, the God
- 6:58of Israel, who has kept me from hurting you, that if you had not
- 7:02hurried out to meet me, not one of enables men would still be
- 7:06alive tomorrow morning. Then David accepted her present
- 7:10and told her return home in peace.
- 7:13I've heard what you said. We will not kill your husband.
- 7:18When Abigail arrived home, she found that Nabil was throwing a
- 7:21big party and was celebrating like a king.
- 7:24He was very drunk, so she didn't tell him anything about her
- 7:28meeting with David until dawn the next day.
- 7:32In the morning, when Nabil was sober, his wife told him what
- 7:35had happened. As a result, he had a stroke and
- 7:40he lay paralysed on his bed like a stone.
- 7:43About 10 days later, the Lord struck him and he died.
- 7:49When David heard that Nabil was dead, he said, Praise the Lord,
- 7:54who has avenged the insult I received from Nabel and has kept
- 7:59me from doing it myself. Nabil has received the
- 8:02punishment for his sin. Then David sent messengers to
- 8:06Abigail to ask her to become his wife.
- 8:09When the messengers arrived at Carmel, they told Abigail, David
- 8:14has sent us to take you back to marry him.
- 8:17She bowed low to the ground and responded, I, your servant would
- 8:23be happy to marry David. I would even be willing to
- 8:26become a slave, washing the feet of his servants.
- 8:30Quickly getting ready, she took along five of her servant girls
- 8:33at attendance, mounted her donkey, and went with David's
- 8:37messengers. So she became his wife.
- 8:41David also married a high Noam from Jezreel, making both of
- 8:45them his wives. Soul, meanwhile, had given his
- 8:49daughter Michael, David's wife, to a man from Gallium named
- 8:54Palti, son of Leish. Lord, you have things covered,
- 9:07don't you? In the full arc of time you
- 9:12bring all things back to the way they should be.
- 9:16And here we are, with our limited perspective, always
- 9:21pushing to make things the way we think there should be in the
- 9:23moment. We think they should be that
- 9:25way, but not so with you, Lord. You see further than we can
- 9:30possibly you know, more than we could possibly know.
- 9:34And you shape all things in the fullness of time, though, to
- 9:38help us rest in Your Majesty, your Kingship, and your
- 9:44authority. That we would not feel that we
- 9:47need to take things into our own hands moment by moment, but that
- 9:51we can rest, trusting and knowing that you you are God and
- 9:57ultimately it's your will that will be done.
- 10:01So we rest. Rest in the enormity of you and
- 10:06your shadow about where you can live as your servants, your
- 10:10beloved children, bringing your Kingdom to fruition.
- 10:16And we love you. And we can pray all of this only
- 10:19in the precious saving name of Jesus, oh man.
