- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 102 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So you have our word or phrase of this episode and our topic, I believe.
- 0:38I Hate Talking: Yeah, the word I chose for today is blithe.
- 0:42I Hate Talking: Like the town in Arizona, that is exactly what I think of too, but no, I technic, I think it's actually California, right?
- 0:52I Hate Talking: Blythe, I think is California court site is Arizona.
- 0:57I Hate Talking: Yes, they are right next to each other, border towns.
- 0:59I Hate Talking: Yeah, you can tell we lived out that way with some and traveled that route a lot.
- 1:04I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 1:04I Hate Talking: But yes, so I think Blythe is California, and then you barely cross over to Arizona.
- 1:11I Hate Talking: But probably the spelling is different.
- 1:14I Hate Talking: No, I think the spelling is the same.
- 1:17I Hate Talking: How would you spell it?
- 1:19I Hate Talking: I thought the town was with a Y, B L Y T H E, and the word would be B L I T H E.
- 1:26I Hate Talking: But I would imagine that if it's an English noun, that it would not be spelled with a Y.
- 1:31I Hate Talking: According to my Google, which isn't always accurate, I like to pretend it is, they spell it B L Y T H E.
- 1:42I Hate Talking: OK, well, it'll be interesting to see where the etymology comes from because I feel like a Y in the middle of a word as a vowel.
- 1:52I Hate Talking: is non-standard, and then that would be more representative of a name rather than a normal formation of a word.
- 1:59I Hate Talking: Yeah, I mean, I could see that, and I also do like Y's in the middle of names.
- 2:05I Hate Talking: I think it looks really nice.
- 2:07I Hate Talking: What do you think of that?
- 2:08I Hate Talking: No, I don't think I do.
- 2:11I Hate Talking: I don't think I like that.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: Well, none of our kids have wives and.
- 2:16I Hate Talking: I would guess a couple have Y's in their names, but none of them have them in the middle of a name.
- 2:21I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 2:21I Hate Talking: So anyways, your thought process of not having a Y in the middle and spelling it with the I.
- 2:30I Hate Talking: Different than the city.
- 2:33I Hate Talking: is probably correct.
- 2:36I Hate Talking: I see it both ways, but when I do deep research into it, it does seem that the original spelling was B L I T H E.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: But I see it both ways on that.
- 2:50I Hate Talking: Quick Google search.
- 2:52I Hate Talking: Well, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, it's B L I D H E.
- 2:58I Hate Talking: Well, I guess we'll have to check Oxford.
- 3:00I Hate Talking: All right, check it out.
- 3:01I Hate Talking: That's what the one you love, right?
- 3:03I Hate Talking: That is our favorite Oxford Language dictionary.
- 3:06I Hate Talking: So, Oxford Language dictionary does not have The spelling with the Y, it references the I spelling, however, the Oxford reference.
- 3:20I Hate Talking: Has B L Y T H E as a modern coinage, apparently an altered spelling of the vocabulary word Blythe, B L I T H E.
- 3:31I Hate Talking: OK, so the Y is the more modern day spelling.
- 3:35I Hate Talking: An apparently altered spelling.
- 3:38I Hate Talking: So, I don't know if that means it's correct or not, but it appears that for whatever reason, People spell it with a Y.
- 3:45I Hate Talking: I think it looks prettier.
- 3:48I Hate Talking: But we haven't talked about what it means yet.
- 3:53I Hate Talking: I would wonder if it's because people are dumbing down the language and having issues pronouncing things, which is not unheard of because that is why some of the words in Previous episodes that we've looked at have perhaps changed from Certain letters that are Different than the original because that was actually closer to the pronunciation of the word, even though it was not the original or what I would consider legitimate spelling.
- 4:26I Hate Talking: But if you look at the word B L I T H E, some people might say bliss or I mean, I would actually want to say bliss, but then when I look at it, I'm like, oh no, there's a silent E.
- 4:41I Hate Talking: It would say blight.
- 4:42I Hate Talking: Right, but With the why, maybe people are more inclined to pronounce it, pronounce it correctly.
- 4:50I Hate Talking: Or you could just say blithe.
- 4:52I Hate Talking: If you want to really mess it up.
- 4:56I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 4:58I Hate Talking: So, we're Blythe, or Blythe.
- 5:03I Hate Talking: It means a carefree, a lighthearted, and joyous, or conversely showing a casual, improper lack of concern.
- 5:14I Hate Talking: So I don't like that last part, the lack of concern, improper lack of concern, but I do enjoy the carefree, lighthearted, joyous part.
- 5:25I Hate Talking: It reminds me of, I got to study abroad in Europe and.
- 5:33I Hate Talking: Spent some time in Saint Petersburg, and they have a phrase I cannot quote it any longer like that.
- 5:41I Hate Talking: But I don't speak Russian, and it's been Almost two decades, but it translated meant smiling is idiocy.
- 5:51I Hate Talking: And that was one thing that I was warned about.
- 5:57I Hate Talking: I do smile a lot.
- 5:58I Hate Talking: Because when you're there, They're gonna look down on you if you're just smiling all the time, like walking down the street smiling at a stranger.
- 6:06I Hate Talking: It was not.
- 6:08I Hate Talking: Um, appropriate.
- 6:11I Hate Talking: And so it kind of reminds me of that, even, maybe that's a version of Blythe, being that like, improper lack of concern, because I can see how someone's thinking like, things are really hard or it's a really bad day and the stranger is smiling at me.
- 6:26I Hate Talking: That's not appropriate.
- 6:28I Hate Talking: I just smile because it's my favorite.
- 6:32I Hate Talking: -- I like -- it.
- 6:32I Hate Talking: Well, there you go.
- 6:33I Hate Talking: Apparently, the Oxford Language Dictionary is behind a paywall now.
- 6:38I Hate Talking: That's sad I can't access it.
- 6:42I Hate Talking: I will have to try again later perhaps, but If you look for the Oxford Language Dictionary, which was a collection of dictionaries essentially.
- 6:50I Hate Talking: The main one being the Oxford English Dictionary.
- 6:53I Hate Talking: It now appears that You can get to the fact sheet for free, but when you go to the meaning and usage, you have to sign in.
- 7:06I Hate Talking: And potentially purchase a subscription.
- 7:10I Hate Talking: Since when?
- 7:11I Hate Talking: Well, apparently since the last time we did an English word, no, the last two episodes we did Latin words, so I don't think we consulted our favorite Oxford language dictionary, but apparently within the past 3 weeks or so, perhaps you may be able to sign in with a library card.
- 7:27I Hate Talking: So there you go.
- 7:29I Hate Talking: We'll have to.
- 7:30I Hate Talking: Do some research on that and get back to you, our listeners, perhaps next episode on what has happened to the Oxford Language Dictionary.
- 7:40I Hate Talking: Yeah, or hey, if you know, let us know too.
- 7:42I Hate Talking: But yeah, we'll have to look that up because that's really interesting.
- 7:45I Hate Talking: I wonder when that happened and why.
- 7:48I Hate Talking: I don't know, and usually Google, at least for me personally and perhaps because I went there more often, would show me the Oxford Language Dictionary definition, but it no longer does that and instead generates an AI overview, primarily generated from Merriam-Webster's, which, as we have discussed previously.
- 8:08I Hate Talking: In my opinion, it is no longer a true dictionary.
- 8:11I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 8:13I Hate Talking: So, I suppose we cannot consult our favorite Oxford language dictionary for the definition, but the research that I'm doing here that looks like it is combining the Merriam-Webster's and some other resources from.
- 8:27I Hate Talking: Online etymology dictionary that you're Definition is.
- 8:35I Hate Talking: I believe, correct.
- 8:37I Hate Talking: And What was the exact definition in terms of the Perhaps less than positive connotation.
- 8:46I Hate Talking: You want the negative connotation.
- 8:47I Hate Talking: Well, what I'm seeing here on etymology online is joyous, kind, cheerful, pleasant.
- 8:54I Hate Talking: From the Proto-Germanic.
- 8:57I Hate Talking: List is Which means gentle and kind, bright or happy.
- 9:02I Hate Talking: There's also a number of similar words in Dutch, Norse, -- and other Gothic -- languages.
- 9:09I Hate Talking: OK, yeah, um, the one that I would consider negative.
- 9:13I Hate Talking: is an improper lack of concern, and in parentheses it says heedless, an example of heedless unconcern.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: Implies a lack of care due to attention.
- 9:27I Hate Talking: An example, he showed a blithe indifference to the consequences of his actions.
- 9:33I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 9:34I Hate Talking: So that does align with a little bit of the notes from etymology online with regards to the evolution of the definition, where it says, quote, the early application was to the outward expression of kindly feeling, sympathy and affection to others.
- 9:49I Hate Talking: But the word has now come more usually to be applied to the external manifestation of one's own pleased or happy frame of mind.
- 9:57I Hate Talking: End quote.
- 9:59I Hate Talking: So basically you're happy with your own frame of mind regardless of any particular situation, scenario, or consequences.
- 10:08I Hate Talking: It's interesting because the word itself, when I'm hearing you say it, makes me think light.
- 10:14I Hate Talking: I believe that's a different word, and that means like, if you say he's a blight on society, right?
- 10:20I Hate Talking: That's like a bad thing, right?
- 10:22I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 10:23I Hate Talking: This would actually be more closely related, potentially with bliss.
- 10:29I Hate Talking: OK, and the spelling the original BIL would be bliss.
- 10:35I Hate Talking: Yes, it's basically the same Proto-Germanic root word with an extra SJO on the end.
- 10:43I Hate Talking: So Right, I just, I feel like it often sounds, it starts to sound a little negative.
- 10:50I Hate Talking: Like, I feel like, you hear blight more often.
- 10:53I Hate Talking: Not Blythe But I wonder if I bet, and I don't know this, that the city that we referenced, Blythe, California, I wonder if they named it that to get people to move out there or anything.
- 11:08I Hate Talking: Because the carefree.
- 11:10I Hate Talking: Joyous Would be somewhere I want to live.
- 11:15I Hate Talking: I suppose so.
- 11:17I Hate Talking: It was named after Thomas Henry Blythe.
- 11:20I Hate Talking: All right.
- 11:24I Hate Talking: It was named by him.
- 11:27I Hate Talking: Well, I guess if you name something after yourself, it still counts as being named after you, even though you were the one that did it.
- 11:36I Hate Talking: You have to read a little bit further in the Wikipedia entry to find that.
- 11:39I Hate Talking: Yes, it was named after him and he was the one that named it.
- 11:44I Hate Talking: That wasn't even his original name.
- 11:47I Hate Talking: I was about to say that I feel like maybe he would just change his name to Blythe.
- 11:51I Hate Talking: Like you can change your last name, your first name if you want.
- 11:54I Hate Talking: -- How -- funny.
- 11:55I Hate Talking: He was originally born Thomas Williams of Wales.
- 11:59I Hate Talking: Williams of Wales.
- 12:02I Hate Talking: I like that.
- 12:03I Hate Talking: And he changed it to Blythe, and then he changed name to City after himself.
- 12:08I Hate Talking: He really likes the name.
- 12:09I Hate Talking: He doubled down on it.
- 12:11I Hate Talking: I'm not finding why he changed his name.
- 12:15I Hate Talking: Maybe because he wants to be joyous and carefree.
- 12:19I Hate Talking: So according to this entry in Grokopedia, which is what it sounds like, it is apparently a Wikipedia-style website that is composed by Elon Musk's Grok generative chatbot.
- 12:34I Hate Talking: OK, so take this with a grain of salt, but According to Gracopedia.
- 12:40I Hate Talking: This gentleman Thomas Henry Blythe changed his name when he was in Wales because of some issues with some legal proceedings and money issues, so apparently he went bankrupt and there was potentially even an arrest warrant out for him.
- 13:03I Hate Talking: So he changed his name and went to America in the middle of the gold rush, and then According to his early ventures in San Francisco, he Sold goods and vegetables.
- 13:17I Hate Talking: On the street Made enough money to loan someone to buy some land.
- 13:23I Hate Talking: That person defaulted on their loan.
- 13:26I Hate Talking: He acquired the land.
- 13:28I Hate Talking: And then that land skyrocketed in value during the gold rush, and apparently he rented and Acquired more land and eventually.
- 13:42I Hate Talking: Went to Blat and Had that land as part of the swamp deal.
- 13:50I Hate Talking: And the rest is history, I suppose, named it after himself.
- 13:55I Hate Talking: And Then had lots of money.
- 13:59I Hate Talking: Apparently it is one of the longest and most complex.
- 14:04I Hate Talking: Estate proceedings with over 129 claimants.
- 14:09I Hate Talking: Trying to get his inheritance.
- 14:12I Hate Talking: To, oh wow, like right now?
- 14:15I Hate Talking: On history?
- 14:17I Hate Talking: No, in history, I think it's maybe been settled down.
- 14:20I Hate Talking: Lots of people claim that their ancestors.
- 14:24I Hate Talking: He died in 1883 and legal proceedings continued for nearly two decades.
- 14:30I Hate Talking: Wow.
- 14:31I Hate Talking: So perhaps he did name himself after.
- 14:36I Hate Talking: The word Blythe, but I think that's unlikely because in the 1800s, I would imagine that there was no quote unquote modern spelling with the Y.
- 14:47I Hate Talking: Right, OK.
- 14:49I Hate Talking: Excellent.
- 14:50I Hate Talking: So some interesting concepts on the word Blythe and the city Blythe, and the man Blythe.
- 14:57I Hate Talking: Would you recommend people visit Blythe?
- 15:01I Hate Talking: Perhaps I think.
- 15:03I Hate Talking: In my memory, it was always court site.
- 15:06I Hate Talking: Maybe that's even why I was thinking it was in Arizona because If you're gonna stop at one or the other, usually to refuel, maybe buy some food, that it's much cheaper to do so in Arizona.
- 15:19I Hate Talking: Yeah, push further, half hour farther, and then.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: You get the cheaper gas and such.
- 15:25I Hate Talking: Yes, I think perhaps the one time.
- 15:28I Hate Talking: That we stopped in Blythe.
- 15:29I Hate Talking: It was by accident and we were trying to go to quartzite.
- 15:32I Hate Talking: OK.
- 15:32I Hate Talking: Have you ever been there?
- 15:34I Hate Talking: Yeah, OK.
- 15:36I Hate Talking: I've been lots of times, but yes, I would, uh.
- 15:40I Hate Talking: Fifty-fifty probably between Courtsa and Blythe.
- 15:44I Hate Talking: I know of people that live there, not like personal friends, but like friends aunts live in Blythe.
- 15:53I Hate Talking: So, but yeah, um, there's a McDonald's.
- 15:59I Hate Talking: It's about as much as I know about it.
- 16:02I Hate Talking: I feel like Again, yeah, like you said, I get them confused cause I'm like, is that the one that has the swamp meat one has like a really big.
- 16:11I Hate Talking: Um, Swap me, but I feel like it's blithe and it might be court site.
- 16:18I Hate Talking: Yeah, I'm not sure.
- 16:21I Hate Talking: I don't think I have any memory of doing anything other than.
- 16:24I Hate Talking: A rest stop.
- 16:26I Hate Talking: Yeah, so I-10 though, it's right off I-10, right in between.
- 16:29I Hate Talking: California and Arizona.
- 16:32I Hate Talking: All right, so this is a little bit later coming out.
- 16:37I Hate Talking: But I want your opinions on April Fool's Day.
- 16:41I Hate Talking: April Fool's Day, 2026 had a lot of strange things happen.
- 16:46I Hate Talking: OK, tell me about it.
- 16:47I Hate Talking: Well, there was.
- 16:51I Hate Talking: Artemis 2 Launching.
- 16:54I Hate Talking: Right, that was launch day of Artemis 2.
- 16:57I Hate Talking: So Perhaps a dig at the conspiracy theorists that Thinks that there are no astronauts aboard -- or -- a nod to it or a nod to it, a hoax.
- 17:11I Hate Talking: It's all a hoax.
- 17:12I Hate Talking: There are no astronauts aboard.
- 17:13I Hate Talking: It's all made in a Hollywood basement.
- 17:16I Hate Talking: There was Elon Musk, uh, basically.
- 17:22I Hate Talking: Submitting SpaceX for IPO.
- 17:26I Hate Talking: And that was a joke.
- 17:28I Hate Talking: I didn't hear that one.
- 17:29I Hate Talking: From all appearances, it appears real, but it's also just very strange that he would do something on April 1st of such.
- 17:36I Hate Talking: Levity that It almost seems Like a joke.
- 17:42I Hate Talking: OK And then Trump is going on about Iran, like he had his crazy speech at 9 p.m. at night or something like that on April 1st, which I personally did not listen to, so only headlines that I've seen from that, but basically, Going off the rails in terms of all the things that he's going to do with Iran, which has gotten even worse as of lately.
- 18:08I Hate Talking: I think some of his tweets or.
- 18:10I Hate Talking: Truth Social or whatever it's called, has some pretty crazy stuff from him.
- 18:15I Hate Talking: Yeah, I haven't really followed any of that.
- 18:18I Hate Talking: Maybe that's it, so.
- 18:21I Hate Talking: Perhaps there's three things on April Fools 2026.
- 18:25I Hate Talking: So do you enjoy April Fools or did you even know it was April Fools?
- 18:30I Hate Talking: Yeah, it almost seemed like an April Fool's fool because all these very strange things were happening, almost as jokes or Nods, as you said to.
- 18:42I Hate Talking: All the people that believe in odd things.
- 18:45I Hate Talking: So there's a strange April Fools in 2026.
- 18:49I Hate Talking: Do you enjoy when I do April Fool's jokes on you?
- 18:53I Hate Talking: No, -- I don't -- particularly like pranks and jokes, so.
- 18:58I Hate Talking: I do not.
- 19:00I Hate Talking: I didn't this year.
- 19:02I Hate Talking: I almost did, but it's been a hard year and a lot of wonkiness, and I didn't, I didn't want to put you over the edge, so I didn't.
- 19:11I Hate Talking: I almost text something like, hey, hon, don't be mad, but we have something I need to tell you.
- 19:20I Hate Talking: And just like, I feel like you would like panic then, like, oh crud, what broke in the house or something.
- 19:26I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 19:26I Hate Talking: -- Is that what -- you -- would -- have thought?
- 19:28I Hate Talking: Yes, I've had enough of that in the last year or two, I think.
- 19:31I Hate Talking: So I didn't want to do that, but I do them on the kids.
- 19:36I Hate Talking: I only do nice ones.
- 19:38I Hate Talking: OK, first, my grandmother.
- 19:39I Hate Talking: was queen of April Fools, it was like one of her favorite holidays.
- 19:44I Hate Talking: She absolutely loved it.
- 19:46I Hate Talking: You couldn't even believe her days leading up to or after it, cause like that whole window was open to her.
- 19:55I Hate Talking: So I think because she knew like, oh, if I say it on April 1st, they know it's a prank.
- 20:00I Hate Talking: But March twenty-ninth is OK.
- 20:04I Hate Talking: Kind of thing.
- 20:05I Hate Talking: So she was definitely the queen.
- 20:07I Hate Talking: That's how my mom grew up with that sense of humor and life experience, and it definitely trickled down to the rest of us.
- 20:15I Hate Talking: So I don't go all out like she did.
- 20:19I Hate Talking: But I do a little bit, and I always wanted to be lighthearted, cause even this last week when I was telling the kids about it, I was like, it's only a fun, it's only fun if the other person laughs.
- 20:31I Hate Talking: If the person you're playing the prank on is hurt.
- 20:35I Hate Talking: Or sad Or some or embarrassed, like that's not a good prank, that's not funny.
- 20:42I Hate Talking: So that's just kind of what I keep reiterating, it's just like, the same thing with the joke, right?
- 20:47I Hate Talking: A joke's not funny if it hurts someone's feelings.
- 20:50I Hate Talking: So you, y'all can't see that Adam disagrees with that.
- 20:56I Hate Talking: I did my little head wobble.
- 20:58I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 20:58I Hate Talking: Yeah, sometimes it might be funny.
- 21:01I Hate Talking: No, it's, you don't want to hurt people's feelings.
- 21:04I Hate Talking: Well, it might not be funny to them, but yes, it still could be funny.
- 21:08I Hate Talking: OK, we're not gonna teach our kids to mock people and hurt their feelings.
- 21:12I Hate Talking: I'm just saying categorically it still could be funny even if it's hurtful, but you don't want to hurt people.
- 21:19I Hate Talking: That's correct.
- 21:19I Hate Talking: That would be overstepping the bounds of being funny -- because -- don't laugh at other people's expenses, right?
- 21:25I Hate Talking: My point was just categorically it could be funny and hurtful at the same time, but that does not mean it's OK to do, right.
- 21:31I Hate Talking: There you go.
- 21:32I Hate Talking: OK, fair enough.
- 21:33I Hate Talking: So we did work on that a lot, um, and we had a lot of fun.
- 21:38I Hate Talking: Again, sometimes I see what moms do with their kids, and it's mean, like they'll say they're going to Disney World, or things like that, and it's like, oh, April Fools, ha ha, that's mean.
- 21:51I Hate Talking: I don't like that.
- 21:53I Hate Talking: If y'all do that, that's fine, if that's how your family interacts and everyone's OK with it, but I don't want to do that.
- 21:59I Hate Talking: But we did pranks like I this year I took the Cheerios.
- 22:07I Hate Talking: And remove the bag of Cheerios from the box.
- 22:10I Hate Talking: Put a bag of goldfish inside.
- 22:14I Hate Talking: And then sealed it up with hot glue, so it looked like a brand new box.
- 22:20I Hate Talking: And then I was like, oh, we're having Cheerios for breakfast, and they opened the box, and then they pulled out the goldfish, and they were like, what?
- 22:28I Hate Talking: Like so confused.
- 22:29I Hate Talking: So those are the kind of pranks I like, where they're just like, what?
- 22:32I Hate Talking: I'm April Fools.
- 22:33I Hate Talking: So, cause they thought that General Mills or whatever did a big mistake, mixing the cereal.
- 22:39I Hate Talking: Another one is like drying, sad, I mean, I live with elementary school kids, so please apply to them, but drawing like an angry face on the milk, and then telling them to be careful cause the milk went bad.
- 22:54I Hate Talking: And they open up the fridge and then our 8 year old thinks that's the funniest joke still, he talks about it, and that was last year.
- 23:01I Hate Talking: And like, remember when the milk went bad?
- 23:03I Hate Talking: And it's just cause I drew a bad mean face on the milk.
- 23:06I Hate Talking: So those are the pranks I like.
- 23:09I Hate Talking: And uh I do like being pranked.
- 23:13I Hate Talking: But again, in that sphere.
- 23:15I Hate Talking: I don't like being pranked in a mean way.
- 23:20I Hate Talking: Like, I don't mind you laughing at me and joking with me, but if you're mocking me, I don't like that.
- 23:26I Hate Talking: Not that you do, but I wouldn't want you to mock me, but you can laugh if I make a mistake.
- 23:31I Hate Talking: What?
- 23:32I Hate Talking: No, I'm not allowed to laugh if you make a mistake.
- 23:34I Hate Talking: We just did a get in trouble for that.
- 23:38I Hate Talking: We did a podcast the other day about the word because of my mistake.
- 23:43I Hate Talking: Oh, you dissing me.
- 23:44I Hate Talking: That was the word the other day.
- 23:46I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 23:46I Hate Talking: Yeah, I laughed at your mistake and then you got mad at me and then you said I wasn't allowed to diss you, so I wasn't mad.
- 23:53I Hate Talking: OK.
- 23:55I Hate Talking: So I suppose that I enjoy those more satirical or wordplay.
- 24:03I Hate Talking: Quote unquote pranks for April fools.
- 24:06I Hate Talking: So the idea in in fact find the Milk has gone bad, joke, humorous.
- 24:13I Hate Talking: Yeah, I think that's funny, but that's more of a play on words, I think.
- 24:17I Hate Talking: Like, you know, if somebody calls you up and says, is your refrigerator running?
- 24:22I Hate Talking: And then you say, you better go catch it.
- 24:26I Hate Talking: You better go catch it.
- 24:27I Hate Talking: That's it.
- 24:28I Hate Talking: So that's more of a play on words than I think a quote unquote prank.
- 24:33I Hate Talking: Yeah, our, um, one of our kids was doing his chores that day when he figured out it was April Fools was instantly like, oh, Mom, come and look at my, I did my chores, come check it out.
- 24:44I Hate Talking: And he had rearranged the entire silverware drawer.
- 24:48I Hate Talking: He thought that was so funny.
- 24:49I Hate Talking: And so that was cute that he tried, you know, I get that's that.
- 24:55I Hate Talking: He's also the kid that years ago, and this was not April Fools, but I was so impressed.
- 25:02I Hate Talking: We had just bought a new couch.
- 25:05I Hate Talking: And so I had the role like no food on the couch, no drinks on the couch, and all that trying to keep it nice as long as possible.
- 25:13I Hate Talking: And at that time we had backyard chickens.
- 25:16I Hate Talking: And one of his jobs was to go get the eggs.
- 25:20I Hate Talking: So he comes to me and he's like, Mom, bad news.
- 25:25I Hate Talking: I broke all the eggs on the couch.
- 25:28I Hate Talking: And I thought that he went and got the chicken eggs, brought them inside and then broke them on our brand new couch, and I was so defeated.
- 25:37I Hate Talking: And I would walk over and they're all the Easter eggs, little plastic eggs are splattered everywhere.
- 25:43I Hate Talking: It was pretty funny.
- 25:45I Hate Talking: And uh I appreciated that joke a lot.
- 25:48I Hate Talking: There you go, that sounds like my side of the family's humor.
- 25:51I Hate Talking: So, yes, indeed.
- 25:54I Hate Talking: So there you go.
- 25:56I Hate Talking: Don't do pranks if they're hurtful.
- 25:59I Hate Talking: Don't tell jokes if they're hurtful to other people.
- 26:01I Hate Talking: But if that is not an issue, then April Fools can be fun.
- 26:06I Hate Talking: Do you feel like you have to ask people before you do a prank?
- 26:10I Hate Talking: Or at work, would you appreciate if someone did a prank on you?
- 26:14I Hate Talking: Or do you want them to Ask your permission first.
- 26:18I Hate Talking: Well, the fact of permission sort of ruins, I think, a bit of.
- 26:23I Hate Talking: Jokester Intent.
- 26:27I Hate Talking: If I lived my life and was never pranked, I would be perfectly satisfied.
- 26:31I Hate Talking: I like humor and jokes.
- 26:33I Hate Talking: I like the quote unquote like prank of like toilet paper or putting your stapler in Jell-O or something like that.
- 26:40I Hate Talking: I probably would not appreciate that and I would live my life much more happily if that never transpired.
- 26:48I Hate Talking: Those jokes I could live with or without, that doesn't matter too much to me.
- 26:53I Hate Talking: Um, I do not like, again, like I said, mean jokes, and I do not like being scared.
- 27:00I Hate Talking: Like when someone jumps out from behind a wall or something to spook you.
- 27:06I Hate Talking: I don't like that.
- 27:08I Hate Talking: There can be concerns with jump scares.
- 27:11I Hate Talking: There is even that PSA a few years ago, maybe some of our listeners have seen it, that is basically a PSA against jump scares.
- 27:19I Hate Talking: OK, I haven't seen the PSA about it, but I like discouraging jump scares.
- 27:26I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 27:27I Hate Talking: The one I wanted to do that I didn't get around to this year with the kids was they use a mouse now for their schoolwork and all, and I saw that you can cover the bottom of the mouse like the sensor.
- 27:39I Hate Talking: And then they think that the mouse is broken when they're trying to use it.
- 27:44I Hate Talking: And I was planning on doing that and didn't get to it.
- 27:47I Hate Talking: See, I think I would not appreciate that.
- 27:50I Hate Talking: Anything that is like a prank to Fulfill the 2nd law of thermodynamics, I would not appreciate.
- 27:58I Hate Talking: Like if you intentionally create disorder that has to then be reordered, I do not like that.
- 28:06I Hate Talking: So you didn't appreciate that silverware being reordered.
- 28:10I Hate Talking: I didn't have to fix that, but if it had been the prank done to me and then The other person did not like voluntarily fix it after the fact.
- 28:18I Hate Talking: And I would not like that.
- 28:22I Hate Talking: So say I went in your work bag.
- 28:24I Hate Talking: And reorganized your files like.
- 28:27I Hate Talking: To turn them Backwards, every file was backwards from what it is right now.
- 28:34I Hate Talking: That would make you mad.
- 28:36I Hate Talking: Extremely Yes, so perhaps that's a good rule of thumb is that if any pranks tend toward disorder, then maybe they should be avoided.
- 28:46I Hate Talking: So you'd rather hurt feelings as long as there's order.
- 28:50I Hate Talking: If the decision is between those two things, yes, I'd actually say yes.
- 28:56I Hate Talking: I'd rather have things orderly.
- 28:58I Hate Talking: And have hurt feelings, -- and -- that's why we're opposite.
- 29:01I Hate Talking: That is why we're opposite.
- 29:02I Hate Talking: So, you are a listener can perhaps share in the comments or send us an email or text of any particular quote unquote pranks or jokes that perhaps you did this past April Fool's Day.
- 29:16I Hate Talking: And you can always like, share and subscribe, and if you enjoyed this episode, you can always share it with 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 or 67 other people and maybe they would enjoy it too.
