Transcript
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Welcome back.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: This is episode number three hundred and eighty-six of the Healthy Diabetic Podcast.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: And welcome back.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: This is part three of Diabetes Confessions.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Yep, you heard it.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: If you've liked the other two episodes so far, and the other two episodes will be linked in the show notes, so you can just easily click a button and go back to those episodes too.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: This, these episodes are my diabetes confessions, the things that I want to get off my chest, the things that maybe I'm not doing and I should be, the things that I've done in the past that are kind of controversial, or maybe the things that I've done in the past that are just kind of a funny thing and you know we all do them.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: But this is diabetes confessions.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: And in this episode, today's episode, I'm just kind of pressing record.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Usually I have like a little bit of a note section or some bullet points I want to talk about.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: But in this episode, I was I'm just pressing record.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: I was really, how should I say, really, I didn't know if I was going to do this one because it really goes against all the things that I talk about, all the important things that I talk about that we all should be doing every single day living with this condition.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: And it goes against the mindset that I always talk about, having a positive mindset.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: But I need your help with this one today.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: And don't judge me.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: I really need your help with this one today because I just I felt I felt called to do this episode today.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I just got done with an episode with Graham that'll be 384.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: So you'll see that before this episode comes out.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: But we talked a lot about trust and confidence.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: And it's an interesting thing to think about those two words.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And I don't want to go deep into that because if hopefully you're following the podcast and you've listened to that episode.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: But if you haven't, Graham asked me a really important question.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And this is going to lead into what my diabetes confession is today.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: He asked me an important question.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: And I would ask you this too.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: I'm very curious what you think.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Is confidence the same as trust?
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: You know, can you have one without the other?
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Can you have does confidence go before trust?
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Do you gain confidence and then gain trust?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: And it was a really interesting and fun conversation that we had with all that.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: I personally believe, and this is this is all I'm going to say about this, but I personally believe that they kind of go hand in hand.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: You can't really build confidence without having some belief and trust in the things that you're going to be doing.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: I think confidence can 100% become before trust.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: The more confidence you build, the more trust you have.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But I also think they're intertwined, interchangeable.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And listen to three or yeah, 384, and you can hear my whole thought process about that.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: But that's going to lead me into today's conversation.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So my diabetes confession today.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And again, I need your help, guys.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: I need you, I need your thoughts.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: I need your, you know, your positive vibes today.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: The last couple, I want to say the last month, and probably more than like the last couple weeks.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: I've been lazy in my diabetes.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: I've been real lazy.
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: And it's it's showing in my numbers.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Part of it is because I'm not 100% trusting my CGM right now.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: Like I'll have, you know, my Dexcom G7 will be good for two or three rounds.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: So maybe, you know, what is that?
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: 10, 20, maybe 20 to 30 days.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: Not even.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: I'd say probably, I would say probably one out of every three is bad.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Where I'm just getting like crap numbers.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: When we're talking like, you know, the first 24 to 30 or 48 hours, maybe in 72 hours, it's it's off by like as much as 100 milligrams per deciliter.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: So it's hard to make decisions when you don't trust in the things that you're doing.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: And then you start getting lazy.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: And then you start going back to your old habits of just looking at food and just guessing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: I haven't been pre-bolishing.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I haven't been, you know, not that I really count carbs, but I haven't been really counting carbs.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: Usually I'll use my glucose sense app, which if you haven't used that app, it is freaking fantastic.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: You can connect your fitness apps to it, you can connect your CGM to it, and it gives you daily updates.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: It can it gives you real-time data or real-time information and insights.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: It gives you a score at the end of the day, which I love.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: It's like up to 10.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Like 10 is like you had perfect numbers, but it gives you a score, and you can like this morning.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: I think I started off at three.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: And it's up to the 10, 10 is the best, 10 is the max.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I started off at 3.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Usually I start off at 7, 8.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: And I started off at 3 this morning because my blood sugar, I woke up this morning and my blood sugar was like 225.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: I had dinner last night with my family.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: We had some cake for my birthday.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: I didn't dose properly for it, or I didn't dose the right way for it.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: I should have microdosed more, and I didn't.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: I got home, went to bed, and my blood sugar was like actually low.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: Like it said I was like 50, which I didn't even feel 50, and I was too lazy to get up and actually do a finger stick and actually check it, but I knew it was gonna come back up.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And then so I went to bed and I wouldn't have taken insulin because I was low.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: So I went to bed and didn't treat it.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: I knew it was gonna come back up, and then woke up this morning at 4:30 in the morning at 225.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: And it's because I didn't, I wasn't doing the things I was supposed to be doing.
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: I didn't microdose that thing.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I knew I should have micro-dosed it, but I didn't.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Anyways, so there's been things that have been happening with the CGM, with the distrust, the frustration that has like made me be lazy.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And like I recognized it yesterday of how lazy I was doing, and really recognized it this morning when I woke up and I was 225.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And it took forever to come back down, too, by the way.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And I was pissed.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: But I think the important piece to this is when you feel yourself come out of the alignment of what you've put in place to thrive, don't be too hard on yourself.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Like I'm not super hard on myself, like I'm pissed off of myself, but I'm not like it's not like, oh, the world's gonna end, or oh, like I'm the worst diabetic ever.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: No, then that never ever crosses my mind.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: It just, okay, you go back to your checklists, you go back to what is working, you know that pre-bolus works, you gotta pre-bolis, especially not using a fresa that much.
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: You gotta, you gotta pre-bolis.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: You gotta take enough insulin.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: You gotta understand the situation.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: If you got a microdose, microdose.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: And I just I wanted to kind of express that for you today.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: Because I get so many messages of like, you know, oh, you're amazing.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: You're a great diabetic, you have great numbers.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: You're always talking about how positive you are.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And it's like, yeah, I do have good numbers for the most part.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: I am positive, but I'm not perfect.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: No way am I perfect.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: We can say stuff all day long as diabetics that we're we should do this, we should do that.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: But unless we are taking action and doing it, the numbers, the outcomes, the results, what you actually want is not going to be there.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: I want to be as close to 100 every single day as possible.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: The last 24 to 48 hours has pushed my number up.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I was really close, people.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: I was close to 100 for a three-day average.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: I was close.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: I was real close.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: It was like 117, 118, something like that.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I was close.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: I woke up this I woke up this morning because the last two nights have been crap.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: And I'm 138 is my average.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: That sucks.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: That sucks.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: And when you look at my CGM graph, you see exactly what we don't want to see.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Up and down, up and down.
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Not like nice, good, like a little coming up and then coming back down nice and easy coming up.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: We weren't we weren't not riding the wave.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: I'm in a tsunami.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Those blood sugars are up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Part of that is the inconsistency of the CGM 100%.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: But there's also a part of it that is actually happening up and down, up and down, up and down, up and down.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: My blood sugar goes up and it comes down really fast because I use a freza.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: Maybe not always the best choice, but if it's coming back down and it's steady again for the next 24 hours, I'm okay with that.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: But if I'm using a Fresa and jumping back down and then it jumps back up again an hour later, because I'm not pre-bolishing, because I'm not paying attention, because I'm not microdosing if I need to.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I'm not taking enough insulin if I need to.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not carb counting, I'm not using glucose sense, the app, the glucose sense app and taking a picture of my food and getting a more accurate reading of what the carbohydrate ratio is when I'm out to eat.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Like I'm not doing the little things.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: When you don't do the little things, things are gonna fall apart.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: And I think the biggest message from me to you today is when this happens, give yourself some grace.
- 9:26SPEAKER_00: It's okay.
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: Get back up the next day, the next minute, the next hour, whatever it is, and get back to your routine.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: Get back to your normal routine.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: I'm back on my normal routine.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: My average right now over the last four or five hours, or really six hours, has been great because my time and range, my time and range number is 60 to 150.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: So 151, I'm out of range.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: So I'm doing the things that I need to do.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I get back on the horse and just go.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Get back on the horse and just go.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: I just I wanted to leave that message for you guys today because I'm not perfect, you're not perfect, and that's okay.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: It's okay that we're not perfect.
- 10:08SPEAKER_00: But just understand the times that you don't do what you're supposed to do, things are gonna fall out of place.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: They just are.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: I'm mad at myself, but I'm not so angry that I'm gonna fall into diabetes fatigue, or I feel so much anxiety of because I can't do it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: That's not where my brain is.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: And that's not where your brain should be either.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I want your brain to be like, oh crap, all right.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Reflect on it a little bit.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I should have done X, Y, and Z, should have been different.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: I should have done this, I should have done that, and then you just move on.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: You don't think about it again.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: I haven't thought about that 225 for the rest of the day.
- 10:47SPEAKER_00: I haven't thought about it once.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Now that I'm sitting down and talking to you, I'm thinking about it and I'm getting very kind of irritated.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: But the idea, the the philosophy, the methodology of how you manage this thing doesn't change.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: Something happens that's either in your control or out of your control, maybe not going the way you want it to go or not getting the outcome that you want to go.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: Okay, reflect on it.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: You figure it out.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: You should have done X, Y, and Z different, and then you just walk away.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: That the last part is the most important piece.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: All the other stuff is important because it helps you for the next time this happens.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: But the last thing is the most important piece.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: Wipe your hands of it and walk away.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: If you can get to that point, my goodness, things are gonna happen for you.
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: Things are gonna happen for you.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: I love I love it when I get to hear stories of people that are like in my situation right now where it's like, man, I'm being lazy or man, things aren't happening or things aren't working the way they're supposed to.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: And then they make the adjustments, and now they're back on the horse and they're thriving and they're living their life, not even thinking about this condition.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: Half the time I walk through my day, I completely forget I have diabetes.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Completely forget.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: Now I know I'm on MDI and I only have one device on, but even I tried to practice that all the time when I was even on an insulin pump.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Didn't matter if I was on a tube pump or if I was on the omnipod, didn't matter.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my I my thought process was is like, yeah, okay, cool, I got this thing on me, but I completely forget that it's there.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Can you get to that point?
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: And if you can, it's okay too.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: Like that's okay too.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: But give yourself some grace.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: So I hope this uh I hope this helped you today.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: It's a little quick, quick one.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: It's my diabetes confession for today, being lazy.
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: I get, you know, we're back on the horse today, back on it, and we're gonna just keep on going.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Sometimes that happens.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you just be like, man, I need a break.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: And either you know that your blood sugars are gonna be off, or you're still fighting to have your blood sugars be in range or be close to your target, but you might still have some fluctuations that you're not used to.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: And that's okay.
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: Just get back on the horse and go.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Get back on the horse and go.
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: Because you're gonna have more opportunity and you're gonna have more time that your blood sugars are close to target than times when they're just all over the place fluctuating up and down, up and down, up and down.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: If you have everything in place, if you know what you're doing, if you can feel confident and have trust in the decisions that you're making.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: And if you don't, if you don't feel like you're there, my door is always open for you.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: 24-7 365, I'm here for you.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: I'll probably be sleeping if you're gonna call me or message me at 2 a.m., I'll probably be sleeping, but by God, I'll get back to you the next day.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna figure this out.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: Because you deserve to thrive with this condition and be able to walk away from these decisions that are giving you all this anxiety, or walk away and not have to think about, oh yeah, I got a diet, I got an insulin pump on, or oh yeah, I got a C gym on.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: I I don't I don't want you to be in that position.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: Live your life.
- 14:09SPEAKER_00: Live your life carefree.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: That's what we're trying to focus on, that's what trying we're trying to do.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: So if you need support, reach out, let's just just schedule a call.
- 14:20SPEAKER_00: Because schedule a free call, let's just talk.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Even if you don't want to do coaching, even if you don't feel like you need to support in the coaching aspect, but you just want to talk, schedule a call.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: Schedule a call, let's chat.
- 14:35SPEAKER_00: Send me a message on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, whatever.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Just send me a message.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: Let's chat.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: Let's chat.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: I'm here for you.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much for listening, and I will see you guys next time.
