- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Hello and welcome to The Aligned Actor Podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: I'm Amy Schloerb, your friendly fellow actor and mindset coach.
- 0:07SPEAKER_01: And this is the podcast where I offer practical mindfulness tools and mindset shifts
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: to help us all thrive in our full actor lives.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Because we need to stay aligned.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: We need to stay aligned with who we are, what we want, and why we choose to be actors.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Because those ideas are really what will keep us nourished on our journey throughout
- 0:30SPEAKER_01: the entertainment industry.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: The Wild West of the entertainment industry.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: Because actor life and the entertainment industry in general is a stressful,
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: relentless roller coaster.
- 0:42SPEAKER_01: It is full of ups and downs, twists and turns, and sometimes full on loop-de-loops.
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: And there's uncertainty, there's rejection, there's unpredictable urgency.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: And all of that will constantly test us and test our resolve around who we are,
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: what we want, and why we choose to do this.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: It's tricky.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: And the only way that we will survive long term in this profession,
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: the only way we will continue on our journey through the entertainment industry is
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: if we are taking care of ourselves and finding effective ways to handle all of
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: the stress that is just baked into actor life.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: So today we have a very special podcast.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: We're kicking off a series of podcasts,
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: which are clips from an interview that I did with a gentleman named Brian Zane.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: So I was actually on Brian's podcast, The Actor's Nervous System.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: And he was generous enough to share the footage of that full interview so that
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: then I could use it on my own podcast.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: So I want to introduce you to Brian today.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Brian Zane is an actor and an acting teacher,
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: and he's also the host of The Actor's Nervous System,
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: which is an amazing podcast,
- 1:56SPEAKER_01: which you can get anywhere that you like to get your podcasts.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: And of course, it is right up my alley.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Because it's all about the nervous system,
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: it's all about being present in your work, in your actual craft of acting.
- 2:10SPEAKER_01: And Brian and I sat down for this interview and we kind of compared notes.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And we discovered that we both are very aligned in terms of the things that we talk
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: about, in terms of the work that we do.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: So Brian is very much into the actor's nervous system and being present in the craft of acting.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: And I'm very interested in The actor's nervous system,
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: staying mindful, being present, and how do we deal with living the life of an actor?
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: So he's the craft and I'm the things around and supporting the craft.
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: So we found that very interesting and we just sat down and we did sort of
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: a talking shop sort of interview and we discussed and compared notes
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: for this podcast, for his podcast.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: And then like I said, he shared the footage with me and so I'm presenting it to you.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: And in this clip, We are talking about how we became interested in our various fields.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: So how I became interested in mindfulness,
- 3:20SPEAKER_01: how we both became interested in nervous system work,
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: and why it is that we chose to start our podcasts.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: And if you would like to experience our full conversation,
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: and why wouldn't you,
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: You can find it linked up below on Substack or in the show notes of the podcast
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: and you can go and experience the full interview if you don't want to wait for
- 3:42SPEAKER_01: a couple of weeks between each episode that I release as I release various clips
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: from the interview over the next few weeks.
- 3:50SPEAKER_01: So please enjoy this first clip.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Again, it's on our work and why we chose to start our podcasts.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Enjoy!
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: I got a certification in life coaching from the Coaching Guild.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And a part of that program, you have to do ongoing continuing education.
- 4:14SPEAKER_01: And so I just looked around and I thought, well,
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: actually,
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: mindfulness might be a good thing to Be certified in and sort of learn more about.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: And I kind of took it on a little bit as a challenge too,
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: because it came up,
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: mindfulness and meditation came up as one of the major sort
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: of universal stress relievers for the body, for the nervous system.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: And at the time, I wasn't finding a whole lot of success with it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: I was sort of like, I don't know if that one really works.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: So I would kind of tell people about it and be like,
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: here are the things that you can do to relieve stress.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: But like, don't worry about that one.
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: If that one doesn't work for you, it doesn't really work for me either.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: So I wasn't as into mindfulness and meditation and things.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: And so I was like, well,
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: actually,
- 4:58SPEAKER_01: let me look into this more because always being present as
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: an actor is very important, obviously.
- 5:04SPEAKER_01: And so I wanted to kind of Learn more about it.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: And so I ended up taking a certification through the INLP center and I fell in love with it.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, it just, it, I, it finally, everything made sense.
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: Whereas before,
- 5:21SPEAKER_01: like just putting on a guided meditation or trying to just like,
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: oh, just focus on your breath.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: I'm like,
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: that's not as easy as everybody seems to think it is when they just tell you
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: to do it.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Now, of course, I'm the one guilty of being like, well, just focus on your breath.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: Because now I understand it really is that simple.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: And that what gets in the way is people thinking like,
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: oh, well, but if I'm thinking things while I'm focused on my breath, I'm bad.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: I'm a bad meditator.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: I'm not doing a good job.
- 5:53SPEAKER_01: But that course just completely opened my eyes up and demystified the whole thing
- 5:57SPEAKER_01: where it was like, oh,
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: I can just be here with my thoughts,
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: notice the things around me,
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: notice that my air conditioning is on right now as I'm talking to you,
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: notice how my breath is,
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: how I'm sitting in this chair, and just be open and aware of that.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: And that's it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: And I loved that.
- 6:21SPEAKER_01: And I also always really loved and kind of thought of it as a superpower,
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: awareness, being a superpower.
- 6:30SPEAKER_01: And mindfulness just opens up your awareness so much.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: It's such good awareness training.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: So that was kind of how I got into it and why I sort of fell in love with it,
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: I would say.
- 6:44SPEAKER_01: What about for yourself?
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Are you practiced in mindfulness or is it more like nervous system specifically?
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: Not that there's a specific to that, but...
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I mean, for me, I guess, so I was a drama teacher for 10 years.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: And I was acting on the side a little bit, but wasn't, like, focused on it as my main thing.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: And, you know, I've always had a very sensitive nervous system, anxiety, stuff like that.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, relatable.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, many actors and many artists, I think.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And many people that find their way into this work, I think, as well.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 7:22SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I found guided meditation.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: I think it was on a podcast at first.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: It was like Mary Maddox just doing some guided meditations.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: And I just started using it.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And it started to help.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And I would just try to do a little bit each day.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: And during the pandemic, I got even more into it.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: And it really, really helped me.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: And at the same time,
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: I did this acting workshop in 2020 with something called the Demidov technique,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: which I'd never heard of.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: And I saw a lot of crossover because it's really about letting go
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: and just seeing what happens in the moment.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: And then I decided to focus more on acting.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: So I went back to grad school and studied Demidov more.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Demidav,
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: but also doing voice and movement training in grad school,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I was noticing all this overlap between the meditation,
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: mindfulness, and regulating the nervous system.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: And none of the teachers were calling it regulating the nervous system.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, that's what we're doing.
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: I'm starting the day with Fitzmaurice technique,
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: and we're just lying down and saying, I am here.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: And I breathe into my feet.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: I breathe and like allowing the breath and the voice to be everywhere.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: And then I'd be in movement class and we'd be like laying on
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: the floor doing this Williamson work where it'd be like 10 minutes to do nothing.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: And you just like lay there for 10 minutes and noticing things.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: And then with Demidav, a lot of it is about finding the culture of calm.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: We do something called losing the body,
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: which is kind of like putting our muscles to sleep basically throughout the arm.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: And then it kind of affects the rest of the body to just to get rid of
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: that unnecessary tension that will kind of get in the way.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: And yeah, and so all of that just kind of...
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I've always noticed a lot of patterns and I'm just like,
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: this is all related and there's not many people like talking about this.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: So I just decided to make a podcast about it.
- 9:30SPEAKER_00: And then I saw you and I was like, oh,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: well, there's one other person at least that's kind of that's talking about this.
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: And so, yeah, that's why I wanted to have you on.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: But that's a little bit what, yeah, how I got into it as well.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: That is so cool.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: And I have been loving your podcast.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I'm a little bit behind.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: I know you just had your DemiDoc teacher on, I think.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: And I'm so excited to listen to that episode because everything that I've heard
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: about the technique that you've been sort of – because you're my first introduction
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: to it.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: But it sounds very mindful.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: It sounds very soothing for the nervous system as opposed to what I think a lot
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: of actors just,
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: I don't know if we're taught it,
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: but we inherently sort of take on this like,
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Tension and control and stress of I have to learn my lines
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: and memorize them perfectly and be word perfect.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I have to be in control of my emotions and what emotion gets expressed at what time.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: I have to have full control over this because I want the result to have
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: a certain Effect on the audience,
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: whether it's an audience from the stage or it's a casting director.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: If you're doing a self-tape,
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: that's a lot of what I talk about with actors is that,
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: you know, the audition sort of mindset and using mindfulness for that.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it was just this idea of like, you could just be calm about all of it.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: And I was like, oh, that's...
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I don't know why that blows my mind, but it does.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: So I love that.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and even...
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Demi Dove is the only technique I've seen where it's like,
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: we're going to work on how you actually learn your lines
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: and you're learning your lines with calm because the actress thing is like,
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: okay, I got to get off book.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: I got to get off book.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And then that tension and that anxiety will just come back when you're on stage or
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: in front of the camera.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Oh, exactly.
- 11:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: I actually started to realize maybe,
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: so the way I often learn lines is I will record them into an app that I have and
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: then I'll listen to them on a loop.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, me too.
- 11:38SPEAKER_01: And I really like that.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: I find that some people caution you against stuff like that because of like, oh,
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: you're going to learn it that way and then you're only going to be able to say it
- 11:47SPEAKER_01: that way.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, no, I can adjust.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Give me more credit than that.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: But what I've found is I'll listen to it while I'm out on walks with my dogs.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: And there's something about the movements and just...
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: Like you're moving,
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: you're calm,
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: you're doing something that you like to do where I do think that it's easier for me
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: to memorize them.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: And then when I go to do them, I don't attach like I'm not like stressed about it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Like, I wonder if like in,
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: inadvertently I've been doing it sort of this this way in a way that is calm.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, especially since you're doing something you really enjoy doing.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: So my podcast is actually very, very old.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, really?
- 12:40SPEAKER_01: It's not like an ancient podcast.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: It's not.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: I don't remember when I started it, but it's been around for a while.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: And it started out as kind of a...
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: It was a little bit more woo-woo and a little bit more like manifesting and like,
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: we're going to get our dream careers and we're going to have fun along the way
- 13:03SPEAKER_01: and we're going to play games and all this kind of stuff.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: And there's still a lot about that that I enjoy.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: But it sort of started...
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: I think I started it because there's this big push for actors to be creating content
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: and to be getting your voice out there and to kind of just that kind of stuff.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: So I think I started it kind of in that vein.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: But then since switching and starting to use Substack as my primary distribution,
- 13:36SPEAKER_01: it really has taken a sort of I want to educate people.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I want to help them be exposed to these ideas.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I want them to understand Mindfulness.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: I want them to understand mindset.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: I want them to feel empowered in their careers,
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: feel emboldened, feel uplifted, inspired, that sort of thing.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: And so it's mostly about just wanting the best for actors.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: And so that's kind of why I continue in it,
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: is to just help get these ideas out there more and more.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: Because I don't,
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I see a lot of people talking about like, here's what you can do to book the job.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Here's what you can do to stand out and yourself tape.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: Here's what you can, all that kind of stuff.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: And not as many people are talking about how do you just get through the day
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: of having to live as an actor?
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you deal with The rejection and the uncertainty and also the urgency
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: that comes up.
- 14:40SPEAKER_01: Like there's just constant urgency where it's like nothing's happening.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: But then you get,
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: you know, a text or an email that says you have a self-tape due in 24 to 48 hours.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: You better get it done.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: And you have to go, go, go, go, go.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: And that I finally realized that like that initial sort of gut thing of like,
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: oh, was not I hate acting or I don't want to do this.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: It was just My nervous system getting startled, right?
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: Because it's almost like, oh, there's a tiger.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Deal with the tiger.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Auditions aren't tigers.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: But it's still a thing to do.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: You need to be taking action.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: How did you start your podcast?
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think I've been listening to podcasts for a long time,
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: pretty much since they've been around.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: And My wife was always asking me, like, what?
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Like, you should make a podcast.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: Like, make a podcast about something.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I don't know.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: What do I have to say?
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, I was graduated from my MFA for, like, a year.
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: I was doing the acting thing, survival job.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: And then I was just thinking about all these things that I was talking about before,
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: just about the connection with the nervous system and actor training and...
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: I just think, yeah, it's not something that's explicitly talked about a lot.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: And I think especially with all this new research about the nervous system and like
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: the vagus nerve and all these different things,
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: I just thought there was an interesting crossover and it can kind of...
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: What's great about now that I'm doing interviews,
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: it's just like I can have actors on,
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: I can have teachers on, I can have a neuroscientist.
- 16:20SPEAKER_00: It's just like there's all these different lenses that you could look at this stuff through.
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: And I just thought it would be interesting to actors,
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: but also just interesting to people in general.
- 16:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I fully agree.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, as soon as I saw the name of your podcast, I was like, oh, this is my jam.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: I was like, I'm leaning in.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: I want to know more.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: This sounds great.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: I was very,
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: and also the fact that you are, I mean,
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: we've sort of talked about how cool this is,
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: that, you know, my work is more like the, around the actor, like the actor life.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you handle that?
- 16:58SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: rejections and how do you handle,
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: I want to check my email obsessively, but I also need to move on with my day.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: How do I like manage myself?
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: How do I deal with being an actor in my life?
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: And your work is really more,
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: how do I apply techniques to be able to use,
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: to be able to use my nervous system effectively and keep my nervous system calm in
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: the actual craft of acting?
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: And I talk a little bit about presence and how mindfulness can help you with that,
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: but really not in the same sort of way.
- 17:35SPEAKER_01: Because I know the demidop technique sounds like it just sort of completely,
- 17:41SPEAKER_01: completely keeps you mindful and present and relaxed and is,
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: while it may not say like,
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: oh, we're a nervous system-based acting technique, it really sounds like it is.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for joining me today.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: If you found this content helpful and inspiring,
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: I'd be so honored if you would leave a comment,
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: share it with your actor pals, check out my offerings below.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: And also, you can find out more about Brian Zane on his website, brianzane.com.
