Last time we talked about utensils like forks and knives. Luna: Yes, de vork and het mes. I still have those in my head. Lucas: Good. Today we use them. We move from holding the tools to using them. Luna: So we are actually cooking? That sounds fun and scary at the same time. Lucas: We are making simple actions. Very small steps. Let us start with cutting. Luna: Cutting. Okay. How do you say I chop the vegetables? Lucas: You say Ik snijd de groente. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. Lucas: Perfect. Snijd comes from snijden, which means to cut or slice. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. It feels strong. Like a chef action. Lucas: It is a very common action. Let us try it one more time slowly. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. I am chopping carrots now. Lucas: Excellent. Now imagine you have a pot on the stove. Luna: A pot. And I need to mix things inside it. Lucas: Right. To stir a sauce, you say Ik roer de saus. Luna: Ik roer de saus. Lucas: Very clear. Roer comes from roeren, to stir or mix. Luna: Ik roer de saus. Is that for pasta sauce? Lucas: It can be for anything thick. A soup, a stew, or pasta sauce. Luna: Ik roer de saus. I love stirring things. It is so satisfying. Lucas: It is. But first you need heat. Let us talk about boiling. Luna: Boiling. For pasta? Lucas: Exactly. To say I boil the water, you say Ik kook het water. Luna: Ik kook het water. Lucas: Spot on. Kook comes from koken, which is the general word for cook or boil. Luna: Ik kook het water. So much steam. Lucas: Now let us put them together in a little scene. Luna: Okay, I am in the kitchen. What do I say? Lucas: Start with the water. Say Ik kook het water. Luna: Ik kook het water. The kettle is whistling. Lucas: Good. Now prepare the food. Say Ik snijd de groente. Luna: Ik snijd de groente. Onions, peppers, tomatoes. Lucas: Now add the liquid. Say Ik roer de saus.
