- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. It's been a little bit at the
- 0:18time of this recording, I think it's been probably week, week
- 0:22and a half since I've recorded an episode of Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:25So it's good to be back in quote UN quote the studio, by which I
- 0:28just mean my regular office and excited to look at Ephesians
- 0:32chapter 4 today. We're going to be in Ephesians 4
- 0:34verses 17 through 24, Ephesians 4 verses 17 through 24.
- 0:40And here Paul is, he's writing about the outworking of the
- 0:44gospel. He is going to be talking a
- 0:46little bit to the Ephesian church about what that means as
- 0:50far as their their lives. They're the old word would be
- 0:56conversation. It's their lifestyle.
- 0:58The way in which they carry themselves ought to be different
- 1:02now than before they accepted Jesus.
- 1:07And so we're going to read through these 7 verses,
- 1:11Ephesians 417 through 24, and we'll see what the Lord has for
- 1:14us today. And I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:17Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord, you should
- 1:21no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their
- 1:25thoughts. They, they have useless, empty,
- 1:28futile thoughts. They are darkened in their
- 1:31understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the
- 1:35ignorance that is in them and because of the hardness of their
- 1:39hearts. Kind of that pairing, their
- 1:42ignorance that is in them and the hardness of their hearts
- 1:45that they don't know about Jesus, they don't know about
- 1:47God. Whatever they do know about him,
- 1:50they're refusing. So Paul saying, don't act like
- 1:53those that are not Christians, verse #19 they became callous,
- 1:58calloused to, if you will, the prodding of the Spirit on their
- 2:02conscience, and they overtime refused to hear, refused to
- 2:09hear. And so as a result, they became
- 2:12callous. I play guitar.
- 2:13I don't play guitar nearly enough.
- 2:15I need to do that a little more. But when you play guitar
- 2:18regularly, you get calluses on your finger, on your fingers,
- 2:23and that makes it to where as you're pressing the different
- 2:25strings, you can play it for a really long time and it doesn't
- 2:29hurt you. And here that is what has
- 2:32happened to these people that are without God.
- 2:36They through rejecting him over and over and over again, they've
- 2:40become calloused where they no longer feel the prodding of God
- 2:44on their soul, on their conscience.
- 2:47It says they became callous and gave themselves over to
- 2:49promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a
- 2:54desire for more and more to hear promiscuity.
- 2:58There's sexual immorality that was rampant in the 1st century
- 3:03AD and frankly today in America, and I'm certain in some other
- 3:06locations as well, this is not a new problem.
- 3:09This is a very old problem. We all want to do what our flesh
- 3:13wants to do. And here for sexual immorality,
- 3:17this is something that for so many people is an idol.
- 3:23Back in, you know, the ancient world, it was literally an idol,
- 3:27like when you went to worship and especially if you wanted
- 3:32good crops and if you wanted your wife to have a child, you
- 3:38would go to these temples of these false goddesses of
- 3:43fertility and you know, rain and stuff like that.
- 3:47And immorality and prostitution was just a regular way that you
- 3:53quote UN quote worshipped. And so being promiscuous,
- 3:58especially as a as a man, if you were, if you were a woman, you
- 4:05were strongly discouraged from being promiscuous.
- 4:07You could, in some instances you could be killed for promiscuity.
- 4:13If you were a slave, which would be a little over half of the
- 4:16population of the Roman world, you would definitely not be
- 4:23encouraged to be promiscuous. But as a a male, it was
- 4:28something that you were seen as important.
- 4:32Anyone that was under you, women, slaves, children,
- 4:35whoever, you had a right to use them however you wanted.
- 4:40And Paul's telling the Ephesian church, even though there's all
- 4:44of this wickedness around you, that's not supposed to be who
- 4:47you guys are. You are, you are the people of
- 4:51God. You are called to fidelity.
- 4:54You're called to have that one man, one woman connection for
- 4:59one life. You're not called to just do
- 5:02whatever you want with whoever you want, whenever you want.
- 5:05And here it says they gave themselves over to promiscuity
- 5:07for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for
- 5:11more and more. It never stops.
- 5:15There's no point that you will hit and be like, OK, cool, I'm
- 5:18done with sin now. I'm I'm happy I've had my fill
- 5:23of it. No sin will always want more and
- 5:26more and more from you. So don't go down that road.
- 5:29Don't live like the Gentiles. They don't know God.
- 5:32They have not listened to his word, not listen to the gospel,
- 5:37and they have behaved in such a way that they just live for
- 5:40their own pleasure. Don't live like that.
- 5:43Verse 20. But that is not how you came to
- 5:47know Christ, assuming you heard about Him.
- 5:49And we're taught by Him as the truth is in Jesus to take off
- 5:54your former way of life, the old self that is corrupted by
- 5:57deceitful desires, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and
- 6:02to put on the new self, the one created according to God's
- 6:05likeness in righteousness and purity of the truth.
- 6:10All right, this is one of Paul's like run on sentences.
- 6:14So there's kind of three, it looks about like 3 different
- 6:18sections here. So verses 20 and 21.
- 6:21First, he says that is not how you came to know Christ.
- 6:24You didn't come to know Jesus through living immorally.
- 6:27He says, assuming if you know Christ, here's what it means to
- 6:31know Christ. You heard about him and we're
- 6:34taught by him as the truth is in Jesus to take off the former way
- 6:39of life, to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put
- 6:43on the new self. So that's that sentence all
- 6:46together. All right, hearing about Jesus.
- 6:49If you don't hear about Jesus, you cannot become a Christian.
- 6:53You can't become a Jesus follower if you've not heard
- 6:55about Jesus. OK, well, who tells people about
- 6:58Jesus? You and I do.
- 7:00We are the ones that are called in the Great Commission to make
- 7:03disciples of all nations, of our family members, of our
- 7:08coworkers, of our neighbors, of the people that God brings us
- 7:13into relationship and contact with.
- 7:16We are to extend the gospel of Jesus Christ to them.
- 7:20That's what it means to be a Christian is to make more
- 7:25Christians and to make disciples.
- 7:28That is what we are called to do.
- 7:31So we have heard about Jesus and I want you to think back in your
- 7:34life. Who told you about the Lord?
- 7:38Maybe it was your parents, maybe it was a pastor, maybe you grew
- 7:41up in church, maybe it was a a Co worker or a friend who told
- 7:46you about Jesus. Now, who in your life can you
- 7:50pass that on to? And it might take a long time.
- 7:55It's the Bible talks about it like planting seeds and watering
- 7:59them and doing some wedding. And God's the one that gives the
- 8:02increase. God is the one that knows who
- 8:05will be saved and when they will accept him.
- 8:08Our job is just to be faithful, to share and to love and to, if
- 8:14you will, kind of water whatever conversations we can have along
- 8:17the way to either help counter lies from the culture or from
- 8:23false religions and to tell them the truth of God's Word.
- 8:27But we are expectant on the Lord to do this.
- 8:30But you and I are here not just to live our lives, not just to
- 8:35make money and to have kids and to go on vacations.
- 8:39That's not why we're here now. In God's good Providence, He
- 8:43gives us those opportunities to be able to partake in those
- 8:46things. What a joy.
- 8:48But He is all but He has placed us here for the purpose of
- 8:52making disciples. So let's do that.
- 8:54Let's tell other people about Jesus so that they can hear
- 8:57about Him just as we have. So he says, assuming you heard
- 9:00about Him. And we're taught by Him as the
- 9:04truth is in Jesus. I love that, that we were taught
- 9:08by Christ to know Him. How does Jesus teach us to know
- 9:13him? Well, number one, first and
- 9:15foremost, through the gospel that declares who God is, what
- 9:19our sin is, the relationship that God wants to have with us
- 9:23and what our future is. So the gospel teaches us to know
- 9:27Christ and that comes not through well, it comes through
- 9:31Jesus's self revelation. He says, here's who I am.
- 9:34And he showed us for that, you know, 3033 years of his life.
- 9:39He showed us who he is. And then there's also an aspect
- 9:45where because of the Holy Spirit, who's called the Spirit
- 9:49of Jesus, that God resides within us.
- 9:53And So what the Holy Spirit teaches us, as we hear from the
- 9:57Word of God, as we hear from fellow Christians, as we pray,
- 10:00as we meditate in all of those things, the Holy Spirit will
- 10:06bring to mind truth about Jesus. He will teach us who he is, how
- 10:13he views us. He will teach us the the fruit
- 10:16of the Spirit, the Lovejoy, peace, patience, long-suffering,
- 10:19gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance.
- 10:22That's what he teaches us and we are taught by Christ.
- 10:27I want to encourage you, this might sound self aggrandizing.
- 10:32I don't mean it to be when you turn on Tabernacle talk, when
- 10:37you turn on, you know, whatever other thing that teaches you the
- 10:45word of God, don't go, OK, I'm learning from Brian.
- 10:50I'm learning from Ron. I'm learning from Andy.
- 10:54No, my friend, we are learning from the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 10:58We are listening to His voice through His Spirit, taking His
- 11:03Word to our hearts. May we come to the Word
- 11:07expecting not to hear from man, but to hear from God.
- 11:11Let's listen for His voice, even past the human voice.
- 11:16So we've heard about Jesus. We've been taught by Him as the
- 11:19truth is in Jesus. We were taught by Christ these
- 11:23three really important things. Number one, to take off your
- 11:26former way of life. This is to repent.
- 11:29I used to be the drunk addict who was cheating and just had a
- 11:37foul mouth. I, I blasphemed, I cursed out
- 11:41people that used to be who I was.
- 11:46Selfish gambling, you know, just to think any and all vices.
- 11:50That's who I used to be, but I'm taking off here this word, put
- 11:54off it. It's like to take off articles
- 11:57of clothing that right now I've got like this over shirt and I
- 12:01can take it off and it is no longer on me.
- 12:05We are called to repent of our sin.
- 12:08That I don't want to live the way that I was living.
- 12:11I want to live in God's way, in the new way.
- 12:14So and then he describes this former way of life is the old
- 12:19self that is corrupted by deceitful desires, the old self
- 12:26that's corrupted by deceitful desires that you and I have
- 12:29desires to get back at people, to be bitter to, you know, be
- 12:36gluttonous to drink to, you know, all of these different
- 12:41things that maybe in moderation, not all of our desires are evil.
- 12:51Our desires come from God. Your desire to eat food is not
- 12:54an evil desire. Your desire for intimacy or
- 12:57companionship isn't an evil desire, but it became a
- 13:02deceitful desire as sin took that and said run with it.
- 13:06Make that determine how you make your choices instead of letting
- 13:11God determine how you make your choices.
- 13:13And so we are to put off the old self, the one that doesn't know
- 13:17how to say no to you. We put off that that former way
- 13:22of life and the sin and evil and it says to be renewed in the
- 13:27spirit of your minds. So we take off the old clothing.
- 13:30We have a total change in the mind.
- 13:33It's what the Old Testament prophets from Moses all the way
- 13:35to like Jeremiah and Isaiah would call the circumcision of
- 13:39the heart that you needed to be set apart to God.
- 13:43Not just on the outside, not just what in you do, but in who
- 13:47you are, your core, your inner thoughts, and your heart,
- 13:53attitude and the way in which you worship and relate to God is
- 13:58called to be set apart to him. How does that happen?
- 14:02Through the Holy Spirit's work, we learn from Jesus to be
- 14:06renewed in the spirit of our minds that the way we used to
- 14:08think about things, we don't think about it that way anymore.
- 14:11The way we used to think about our relationships, we now think
- 14:14it a different way because of who we are in Jesus, because of
- 14:18the gospel, because of the forgiveness and the love that we
- 14:22have been shown, we are challenged to live in a
- 14:25different way. And so our minds are remade.
- 14:28They are renewed by learning from Jesus, learning from the
- 14:33Word, learning from the Holy Spirit.
- 14:36So we take off our former way of life.
- 14:39We are renewed in the spirit of our minds.
- 14:41And then we're 24 and we put on the new self, the one created
- 14:46according to God's likeness and righteousness and purity of the
- 14:51truth. There is a real new you if you
- 14:56have accepted the Lord Jesus as your Savior.
- 14:59When you got saved, you became not just who you used to be, you
- 15:05became someone brand new and you were not just a a new human, you
- 15:12were a new kind of humanity, one that is created according to
- 15:17God's likeness. You are like God in who you
- 15:21truly are. Now you're different.
- 15:24You are one that is clothed in righteousness and you have a
- 15:27purity of the truth that you are.
- 15:31You have a sincerity in the belief of God's truth as
- 15:34expressed in the gospel and the Word of God.
- 15:37And because you believe that, and because you are a St. that
- 15:42is headed for heaven, clothed in the righteousness of Jesus
- 15:45Christ, everything is new. And so put off the old clothes.
- 15:50Put off the old way of doing things.
- 15:51Change the way you think according to the Word of God and
- 15:54the Holy Spirit at work in you, and then start putting on the
- 15:58new man. Put on the new clothes and you
- 16:01might be like, all right, well, what are the new clothes?
- 16:03What, what does it look like to begin walking in this new Jesus
- 16:07way? We're going to look at that next
- 16:08episode. And I'm super excited for that
- 16:11because it gets really practical of put off this action, put on
- 16:15this action and it's just really, really practical for us.
- 16:19I, I want to say one thing as we bring this episode to a close.
- 16:24The real you is not the Sinner. The real you is not the one that
- 16:31cannot forgive. The real you is not the one that
- 16:36has to do whatever your flesh tells you.
- 16:39The real you is the one that is like Jesus.
- 16:43The real you is the one that has a home in heaven.
- 16:46The real you is the one from Ephesians chapter, one that is
- 16:50beloved by God, chosen by Him before the foundation of the
- 16:54world. The real you is the one that is
- 16:56sealed with the Holy Spirit, that is the particular special
- 17:00possession of God Almighty. The real you is the one that
- 17:05doesn't have any sin on your account.
- 17:08There is an old you and there's an old me that we fight every
- 17:12single day, but they will not win.
- 17:16They might win a couple skirmishes here and there with
- 17:18us, but the old self, the one that we don't want to be here,
- 17:22the one that is, is a slave to sin, is dead and dying.
- 17:30And the real us, the righteous us, that's the one that we will
- 17:35have for all of eternity. And in that moment that either
- 17:38Jesus returns or we die, the old self, the sinful, you and me,
- 17:44it's gone forever. And we will always walk in
- 17:49goodness with a completely remade human nature because of
- 17:54what Jesus did for us, that he passed through death willingly,
- 18:00sacrificially, and because he took on human form, died a
- 18:05perfect sinless death. When He rose again and rose in
- 18:10power and rose in a glorified body, He promised that same
- 18:17transformation and change to every person that will turn in
- 18:22faith to him. Repent of their sin and believe
- 18:25in Jesus for salvation. Our future is as bright as the
- 18:29promises of God. While you and I struggle with
- 18:32sin today, that struggle is not forever.
- 18:34And one day that sinful you and me.
- 18:37He's going in the grave and He's never rising again, and we will
- 18:41live forever in perfect unity and and joy and happiness with
- 18:48God and with all of his people and all of creation, because
- 18:52that is who our God is. He is the restorer, He's the
- 18:55wonder worker, and He is a worthy God to praise.
- 19:00Thanks for tuning in today. I hope that this was an
- 19:02encouragement to you. Looking forward to tomorrow.
- 19:04Just a really, really practical episode on put off this
- 19:07behavior. Put on this behavior.
- 19:10Thanks for tuning in.
