- 0:00Alright, so we made it to September, new month, new
- 0:06challenge more. So if you're giving like today,
- 0:11be appreciable that as always and make it a good day even if
- 0:16you don't want to. So time for a sports drawback
- 0:30this morning. You know, professional sports
- 0:41have had a share of pharmacing players who came in different
- 0:49sports, you know, with a lot of expectations and being on the
- 0:56microscope of a lot of people. And while some have been able to
- 1:01live up to and find a Hall of Fame of legendary careers,
- 1:11others completely didn't live up to what was expected.
- 1:18Now, entries notwithstanding as the reason why many of them just
- 1:25simply couldn't get it done or were either so consumed by other
- 1:32things outside of their respective sport that they were
- 1:35never able to focus sorely on what they need to do in their
- 1:41field of play to be productive. But for one former NFL
- 1:51quarterback, how almost 20 years later of his on the mission
- 2:00proved that. Just like with a guy in French,
- 2:06Young, who I mentioned yesterday, even though he had a
- 2:10little bit of a better career, Doctor Marcus Russell's breakout
- 2:16performance in the Sugar Bowl in 2007, just six, just seven
- 2:23season, also proved that overnight spotlight never
- 2:31guarantees success in the world. Now, unlike Young, who they're a
- 2:42little better than Russell. Russell, however, became a
- 2:47trailblazer and not in a good way.
- 2:51And how he became essentially the guy which has changed the
- 2:57NFL landscape for players coming in.
- 3:07To Marcus Russell sold promise. We came from LSU in 2007.
- 3:16Now, mind you, this was a guy who sold a little bit of
- 3:22potential. His first, you know, couple
- 3:27years with the Tigers before finally starting the last few
- 3:32seasons. But it was that Sugar Bowl win
- 3:37over Notre Dame and soon to be draft classmate Brie Quinn that
- 3:44earned our Soul Game MVP honors after leading the Tigers to a
- 3:50dominant win over Northern game. Now when Russell came out of the
- 3:59scouting combine, the guy had canned funnel.
- 4:04I mean he control ball 6070 yards on his knees.
- 4:10Now, like every prospectus question marks, one of the
- 4:16problems with Russell when this proved to be a Backbreaker for
- 4:20him at least later on, was his weight, unfortunately.
- 4:29But I'll save that for down the line.
- 4:34Anyway, the 2007 Info Tribe had its own share of Hall of Fame
- 4:41talent OR soon to be Hall of Fame from Calvin Johnson, Joe
- 4:49Thomas, Adrian Pearson, Patrick Willis, Darrelle Weavers.
- 4:55I mean, I get on and on. The Oakland Raiders had the
- 5:01first pick and they needed a quarterback.
- 5:06And now Davis, God bless the soul, was hoping for at least
- 5:11one opportunity to find a quarterback that was going to
- 5:15signal the turn of a new franchise.
- 5:23Many people around the organization trying to talk
- 5:28Davis out drafting Russell by saying going either Adrian
- 5:33Peterson or Calvin Johnson with who to be the smarter choice.
- 5:39Even his own coach Link Kevin tried to talk him out of it by
- 5:49saying ow. I don't think drafting Russell
- 5:52would be the smart decision. Even former line CM at the time
- 5:58Matt Miller tried to talk his former boss AKA when no one was
- 6:07a player for the Raiders. He even tried to talk out of not
- 6:12taking Russell because of not only the Lundwick test, but even
- 6:18though Russell had great on talent, there was still a lot of
- 6:22things black. Now mind you, this was in our
- 6:29day was at the end of his mortality.
- 6:34Not just you know, I say only, but in life also.
- 6:39He wanted the guy with the cannon on.
- 6:42That's exactly what happened, and not surprisingly, after
- 6:47passing up knowable names, he chose Russell with the first
- 6:54pick that year. And that's where the story
- 7:01actually reacts immediately after being drafted #1 things
- 7:15already come on track. Start with the franchise.
- 7:19See Russell for reasons even 20 years later I never understood
- 7:26he held out training camp on those end contract.
- 7:32As a quick point of reference, this was at a time when if you
- 7:37remember when you have seen any player that was a blue chip
- 7:43prospect come in the NFL and game.
- 7:46It's so up in a mile of money, a lot more in some cases than
- 7:52veterans who are playing in the league for 10 plus years.
- 7:57Yeah, that part I will go into a little bit later.
- 8:02But regardless to Marcus Russell, he missed all training.
- 8:09He only went to the rookies suppose him and I was there.
- 8:13So immediately off the bat, the Vampy started to question him
- 8:18his soon to be teammates. Kyle looked at him sigh.
- 8:21I even though he was participating and he did himself
- 8:29no favors according to a lot of people when not Nick any need
- 8:37reps to help him become an eventual star.
- 8:44Eventually the race on to Marcus Russell finally agreed to a six
- 8:50year contract nearly 69,000,000 with 31 of it guarantee.
- 9:00But the fact he was essentially missed all the training camp are
- 9:05not really being in shape. You can essentially say the
- 9:09outside of this maybe one or two rookie games that he played in
- 9:15at the tail end of the season, it was like, wow, let's just
- 9:20kind of put it to the side. Geosynate was Russell's first
- 9:25field training camp. So you figure no contract
- 9:30dispute, a whole offseason to finally develop what you need to
- 9:36do. And it should be all systems go,
- 9:39right? Not so much the rails that
- 9:45started out 14. Wayne Kiffling was fired five
- 9:50games after the season. And Russell, yeah, let's just
- 9:57say what was supposed to be a sophomore jump turned out to be
- 10:03a how do you. I mean, I'm I can't really say
- 10:08sophomore Sloanka and he didn't really play as a rookie.
- 10:15There was more of like a sophomore.
- 10:20No show after Kiffling was fired.
- 10:25Tim Cable to go as head coach. Russell only drew three touch
- 10:31sounds and 11 substance. Yeah, when you ultimately have
- 10:42those kinds of snap lines, something isn't right and the
- 10:50maybe even matters was the various one that's just five
- 10:54games. And if you fought Russell's
- 10:59performance off the off of a what should be the grade you
- 11:08know progressing to his career wasn't meaning, then the myriad
- 11:14problems that would happen off the field was only the tip of
- 11:18the iceberg. Within a few months span,
- 11:25Russell's uncles, who looked after Jamarcus when he was
- 11:30younger and who he considered father figures, ultimately
- 11:36passed away within a few months. A week one another the loss of
- 11:44two, and actually, there was a third family member before
- 11:50Jamarcus even joined the Raiders.
- 11:53The loss of three key family members weighed heavily on the
- 11:58quarterback, and it gave him almost no notification to even
- 12:04keep going. In his words, he felt everybody
- 12:08was leaving him hard once they felt he had no one to rely on,
- 12:13nobody to talk to and of course, aided by his own field
- 12:19struggles. It was tough slang when he came
- 12:27back to train camp that offseason in jail, SO9HE claimed
- 12:33nobody from the Raiders organization even bought to see
- 12:36how he was doing. Of course, he didn't necessarily
- 12:42let the Raiders know how he was dealing with all this.
- 12:48So it's kind of like a double edged sword fever.
- 12:53You know, we all go to personal life situations more tragic more
- 12:59so than I think a lot of people realize.
- 13:03You try and navigate as best we can.
- 13:06We understand. But in the end, you have to
- 13:12learn to move on and try to live your life the best way you can.
- 13:19And especially professional sport like the NFL, unlike the
- 13:25three other professionals sports leagues, it's a bomb like this.
- 13:33And when Melanie say how 1 of Demarcus's concerns going into
- 13:40when he was in the NFL was his weight, Yeah, that particular
- 13:47offseason, he came in weighing over £300.
- 13:53You heard that correct, A quarterback weigh over £300.
- 14:04Not, you know, £300, you know, building muscle, you know,
- 14:08looking stronger. He had let himself go that
- 14:14offseason, and when it came time for the reckless season to
- 14:22finally begin, it was clear that the Raiders, not surprisingly,
- 14:29made the wrong decision in drafting this guy.
- 14:36But of course, everybody remembers that now infamous
- 14:40blank DVD story that the coaches had sent Russell, knowing there
- 14:45was nothing on it, to look at game film for an opponent that
- 14:52they were preparing for that week and asked Russell to watch
- 14:56it when he went home. And of course, you can go look
- 15:00for the story yourself. But if you have to send your
- 15:05quarterback a blank DVD with essentially nothing on it, and
- 15:13on top of that he didn't even buy to open it and just left it
- 15:18there, That essentially gave you all you need to know that not
- 15:25only was this guy essentially not that we needed to do to
- 15:30actually write down the German game found when he was in the
- 15:35organization as far as you know, what's means and what have you.
- 15:40But it showed the complete lack of understanding how they
- 15:45actually be a court. And Long story short, the 2009
- 15:52season was just trolls. And it got really to a point
- 15:57after a while that the Raiders finally said, you know what,
- 16:05we've seen enough. Bruce Scott Kowski took over the
- 16:09start of midway through the season and that was essentially
- 16:13the end of the world for us. So and shortly that all season
- 16:24in Channel 10, the Raiders brought in Jason Campbell from
- 16:30Washington to be the court. Which only meant one thing, that
- 16:36the Jamarcus Russell experiment after three years was officially
- 16:42over and he was released now off season and never played the nine
- 16:48NFL game ever again. And of course he would have
- 16:56still with legal problems not long after his career was over
- 17:01and even though on 2 occasions he tried to revive his career by
- 17:08trying to make comebacks. And if you remember, he even
- 17:13penned the letter at one point to all 32 teams saying he would
- 17:18be on somebody's scout team for free and or train campaign
- 17:23fight. Yeah, you're not going to get
- 17:30that. Like I said, along with the
- 17:34legal problems he would have after his career was over.
- 17:39And even now, I still believe he's still facing some serious
- 17:43things, including the father the high school that he wants
- 17:48starred in in Russellville. AL has been tough slang for him,
- 17:56but again, it's been a long time.
- 18:00But here's how the aftermath of all of this comes into play.
- 18:07Earlier I had said how him holding our trained captain for
- 18:13the year was a terrible way to start.
- 18:20So he essentially became one of two reasons why you see NFL
- 18:28players when they come in, no one believe you're like a first
- 18:33round pick, Why you see the rookie salary cap being what it
- 18:39is today. Everybody remember standing for
- 18:42effort when he came out of Oklahoma, 50 million guaranteed
- 18:48right off the bat. Everybody remember that.
- 18:52But like with anything, there's always a foundation behind it.
- 18:57Jamarcus was the foundation because by him holding out
- 19:04essentially gave the league Norway its owners every reason
- 19:10to stop the owners contracts for first round players Norway
- 19:17quarterbacks 'cause at the time the entire team's salary cap was
- 19:25all combined to 1, even to the first round players being paid
- 19:30extraordinary money. When the lockout happened in
- 19:352011 on this fought to try to bridge the gap between players
- 19:45coming in making all this money over establish 10 year Fets and
- 19:52try and create along with others safety messages with the game.
- 19:57A competitive way to make sure that rookies in Century E up on
- 20:02the salary cap space and put ACBA in which led to a rookie
- 20:09salary cap of today. So the days of guys getting paid
- 20:15too much money when they come into camp or as rookies in the
- 20:19NFL, those days are all gone. And you can blame Jamarcus
- 20:25Russell for essentially being the trail boys.
- 20:30Maybe in the worst way, sure, but that's the way it is right
- 20:36now. In the end, Jamarcus Russell,
- 20:41just like Vince young guy I Met Jen yesterday, became another
- 20:48cautionary tale of how being put in the spotlight overnight never
- 20:55leads to success down the road, but him in particular.
- 21:02Essentially, he became the punchline of rookie all time
- 21:08boss because look, some people want to bait, why leave And a
- 21:15handful of others who didn't necessarily look up the
- 21:21expectation. While I'm not even going to try
- 21:27argue against anybody who wants to bring up different names,
- 21:35there's just one small problem. You know, in the case of, you
- 21:40know, Ryan Leaf and many others, yeah, they weren't great NFL
- 21:44players. And yeah, they had a lot of
- 21:45legal issues after the tourism role.
- 21:49At least they were able to redeem themselves in our twin
- 21:53much better life. We can't really say the same for
- 21:57Russell because not only was he not productive on the field, he
- 22:03turned out to be really just a sad waste of a having a lottery
- 22:11ticket, a golden one at that. And because of the lack of
- 22:15focus, wanting to get paid and not being disciplined enough, he
- 22:22essentially do it all the way. That's the point.
- 22:26And so while we may poke fun at him for saying of his own
- 22:32missing, I am the biggest and the whole boss initially, his
- 22:38nearly three years in Oakland was essentially there in the
- 22:43conference for how hopefully teams would never take a flyer
- 22:50out on the guy who probably did not need to be in the spotlight
- 22:55after a record break performance against Nora Damon, the Sugar
- 23:02Bowl and how he became the reason why the rookie salary cap
- 23:08was independent today in the NFL.
