- 0:00SPEAKER_03: Thanks for joining us here on the Widanchy Panther Podcast brought to you by Les Schwab.
- 0:04SPEAKER_03: And we are on episode six already here as we swing through the fall season.
- 0:09SPEAKER_03: Let's see, we've got one more we'll get in here in the month of September, and then we'll get into October.
- 0:14SPEAKER_03: It's it's homecoming week.
- 0:16SPEAKER_03: And uh I think it's rather appropriate that we have uh a cheerleader here as part of our we've we've had duos the last couple of weeks as far as the athletes of the week or the Panther of the Week.
- 0:26SPEAKER_03: And uh unfortunately um we've only had one be available, so you're available.
- 0:31SPEAKER_03: I want to introduce you to Amaya Carbera Vargas, who's a senior with the Appleites dance team.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: I said cheer.
- 0:37SPEAKER_03: I apologize, but I gotta get that right.
- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Uh your coach said, and this is Coach Coleman, Amaya has always shown up for her team in every way.
- 0:48SPEAKER_03: She is one of our captains, always on time.
- 0:51SPEAKER_03: Is that true?
- 0:52SPEAKER_03: You're always on time?
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Good for you.
- 0:53SPEAKER_03: Uh knows her choreography and uplifts the team.
- 0:57SPEAKER_03: She always pushes them to be better and get better.
- 1:00SPEAKER_03: She is truly an amazing leader.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: That's that's high praise there.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: Do you have to do you have to write them a check now and say thank you for the well, congratulations, Maya.
- 1:12SPEAKER_06: Thank you.
- 1:13SPEAKER_03: Uh Appellette, how long have you been doing that?
- 1:15SPEAKER_06: Uh all four years.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: All four years.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:18SPEAKER_03: Were you in dance before that?
- 1:19SPEAKER_03: And this is an obvious transition, or you just wanted to do this when you got into the high school?
- 1:24SPEAKER_06: Um well, I was always like in dance when I was little, but nothing too serious.
- 1:28SPEAKER_06: But my sister was an appellate when she was in high school, so that influenced me.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:33SPEAKER_03: How old older is your sister?
- 1:35SPEAKER_06: Uh she's ten years older than I think.
- 1:36SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay, so quite a bit.
- 1:37SPEAKER_06: So 27.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: You were a little little in watching your sister do that, so I'm sure she was like your hero, right?
- 1:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:43SPEAKER_03: Tell us about for those that aren't familiar, Appalachia, it's not cheer, but it's sort of cheer because we see you guys at halftime, that type of thing.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Tell us what Apple's is.
- 1:52SPEAKER_06: Uh Appleetz is, well, a dance team.
- 1:56SPEAKER_06: And we um do routines and we really like try to perfect them to take them onto competition floors and compete in all of our competitions away.
- 2:06SPEAKER_06: And it's really just like a solid, like trying to get a solid routine around like two minutes.
- 2:13SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:14SPEAKER_03: And that's a lot of work, isn't it?
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:16SPEAKER_03: I mean practice.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: Honestly, I did a piece here a few years ago on the Appellates uh on the TV station, and I was totally blown away about how much work goes into you know, we see a little snippet of a performance at halftime of a football game or something.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: There's so much work that goes into that.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: How about would could you quantify how many hours goes into one like two-minute routine?
- 2:40SPEAKER_06: Um I don't know, but a lot of hours.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because you have to Are you guys practicing every day, every other day?
- 2:47SPEAKER_03: How's it working?
- 2:48SPEAKER_06: Um Usually it is Tuesdays and Thursdays, sometimes Wednesdays every week.
- 2:53SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: So yeah.
- 2:54SPEAKER_06: We spend a lot of time just for like they're called eight counts.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: Mm-hmm.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: And it's just like one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
- 3:01SPEAKER_06: And we spend like sometimes whole practices just on two eight counts.
- 3:04SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 3:05SPEAKER_06: Just to get them really interesting.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: That was interesting when I did that piece too.
- 3:08SPEAKER_03: I thought you guys would do the whole thing, but it's really broken down into the into those segments where it's okay, we don't have that right yet.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: And are you one of those that has eyes on everything that can go, okay, now we need to do better?
- 3:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah, um, when we do routines and we practice them, um sometimes our co our coaches will have us like step out of the routine and watch the routine and help them see if because when you're performing, it's better to see things that coaches might not be able to see.
- 3:36SPEAKER_06: So you can point them out and help correct them.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:39SPEAKER_03: Do you guys have any competitions coming up soon?
- 3:42SPEAKER_06: Uh not soon.
- 3:43SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:44SPEAKER_06: But in I more later in October?
- 3:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, more in the winter season.
- 3:49SPEAKER_06: Winter is our competition season.
- 3:51SPEAKER_03: Ah, okay.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 3:52SPEAKER_03: How many members are in Appleetz?
- 3:55SPEAKER_06: Um, I think around uh 12 on varsity.
- 3:59SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 3:59SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 4:00SPEAKER_03: So there's varsity, junior varsity, the whole thing.
- 4:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: Okay, great.
- 4:04SPEAKER_03: Um as far as the um the when we see you guys at halftime, you know, a lot of people they're getting up and going potty or they're going to the to the, you know, concession stand, that type of thing.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Um is it hard to perform if people are leaving or doing other things, or do you just concentrate on what you're doing?
- 4:24SPEAKER_06: I think most of the time we just try to all concentrate on what we're doing.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: And we just think like if there's a crowd, there's a crowd.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: If there's not, there's not.
- 4:32SPEAKER_06: We're just gonna like show our hard work that we put into it and just do our best.
- 4:37SPEAKER_03: When you go to the competitions, d are you adversarial with the other teams or do you guys cheer on the other teams as well?
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: Uh we cheer on the other teams as well.
- 4:46SPEAKER_06: There's um sometimes there's awards on the competition for teams that um Or cheering other teams.
- 4:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's awesome.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: That's awesome.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 4:55SPEAKER_03: So is it I don't know if it's embarrassing or if it's when you show up at a competition and you've got a routine that's to certain music, and then somebody else has that same routine with the same music, is that I mean, does that happen?
- 5:08SPEAKER_06: Um it's happened.
- 5:09SPEAKER_06: Most of our music, it's like a combination of a lot of songs.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:13SPEAKER_06: But definitely we'll be hearing like some similar songs.
- 5:16SPEAKER_06: We're like, oh, we're doing that one too.
- 5:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:18SPEAKER_06: And it's just like we don't think much of it because you know, there's always a lot of teams, so it's like if usually they're like in the beginning and we're at the end, it's like it's a good chunk of time.
- 5:28SPEAKER_06: So the crowd doesn't like hear it so much.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 5:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I my reference is the movie Bring It On, which is cheerleading isn't dancing, but it's you know, it it is very similar though, isn't it?
- 5:40SPEAKER_03: Between some of the cheer routines and the dance routines that you guys do?
- 5:43SPEAKER_06: It's similar, yeah.
- 5:44SPEAKER_06: Just like except they obviously, you know, cheer and for the like the teams and on sidelines and we just do for like halftime.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 5:52SPEAKER_06: But it's like in the same genre, I would say.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 5:55SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 5:56SPEAKER_03: What's the most embarrassing moment you've had as an Apple ad?
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: Um I'm not sure.
- 6:01SPEAKER_06: Probably just messing up a routine and a performance.
- 6:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: How do you get back?
- 6:04SPEAKER_03: I mean, because you you fall out of step or something like that, and it's like, uh oh, I'm in the wrong spot.
- 6:10SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's like for for example, football routines, or like football when we perform for football and I mess up, I just have to really like like let myself have a smile on my face and just continue and like you being a leader, you're probably one of the focal people right in the middle of the book.
- 6:30SPEAKER_03: Okay, I'm asking everybody this.
- 6:31SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's true for you, Amaya.
- 6:33SPEAKER_03: Do you have a nickname?
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: Um no, not really.
- 6:36SPEAKER_06: You don't?
- 6:37SPEAKER_06: No.
- 6:37SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:38SPEAKER_03: I guess nicknames is passe.
- 6:40SPEAKER_03: The kids don't have nicknames anymore.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Um well, congratulations.
- 6:43SPEAKER_03: Oh, wait, where's your medal?
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Where'd it go?
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's already.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's always oh wait, here.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: We gotta we gotta hand her the medal.
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 6:50SPEAKER_03: From Hagland's trophies.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 6:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, and as a guest on the podcast, you get a Pepsi Zero.
- 6:55SPEAKER_03: So and I put them in the fridge this week, so they're they're chilled, so a little bit better to give those.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 7:01SPEAKER_03: We should mention, too, that the other athlete, uh the Panther of the Week, is Wesley Wes Beach, a senior in cross country.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: We're gonna talk with uh hope the cross country coach next week, and maybe we can get Wes in to talk as well.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: Thanks for joining us.

- 7:50SPEAKER_03: Welcome back to the Winanchee Panther Podcast here on KKRV 1047.
- 7:54SPEAKER_03: We have Jordan McGregor, the head coach for the girls' volleyball team, joining us now.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: And you're just coming out of survival week.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: I don't know how you just how you determine.
- 8:03SPEAKER_03: You played a two couple of very tough opponents last week.
- 8:06SPEAKER_03: Talk about how the season has gone so far.
- 8:09SPEAKER_03: And uh I know you you set them up tough because that's what you're gonna face if you get to state.
- 8:14SPEAKER_03: That's your goal.
- 8:15SPEAKER_03: How did it go?
- 8:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I would actually say we had a very tough two weeks, two and a half, three.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because two weeks ago, you well, you had Shillane, you had you were on the west side, you had Yakima with the tournament down in the Sundome.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, that's a lot to start your season.
- 8:30SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, it's been great.
- 8:32SPEAKER_07: Our non-league schedule has been fantastic.
- 8:34SPEAKER_07: You know, we started off, we played at Bellevue, we won that game in three, and then we went and played Issaqua, who is currently undefeated, and they're a fantastic team, and we ended up losing to them.
- 8:43SPEAKER_07: And then we played Shillan in five, and that was a really great match, and just such a good environment.
- 8:49SPEAKER_07: And then we won that one, and then we had Camus at home and went to five in that match as well, ended up losing that one, and then we had like Stevens right away, went to five again.
- 8:59SPEAKER_07: We ended up pulling that one out, and so and then in between all those, we did go to the Sundome Tournament, which is an all-day tournament, and ended up tying for third.
- 9:07SPEAKER_07: So that was really exciting as well.
- 9:09SPEAKER_03: So talk about the girls and you know, you as a coach, I know always looking for coaching moments, right?
- 9:14SPEAKER_03: You know, what is it about those matches that that could have leaned your way, could have gone the other way, and and what did you draw from it and how are the girls responding to you?
- 9:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you know, this is a first year for me where half of my girls have never had varsity experience before.
- 9:30SPEAKER_07: And so we're inexperienced when it comes to big moments, big matches.
- 9:34SPEAKER_07: And so that's why I wanted to do our non-league the way that we did it is to get them that experience early to figure out what do we need to work on, what are our weaknesses, and get those early so that we can spend all season getting better at them, and then hopefully, you know, throughout league and then throughout our postseason, we're able to use what we learned and be able to capitalize later when it's in when it matters.
- 9:55SPEAKER_07: And so I think the biggest takeaway we got was we got a lot of girls, a bunch of really high-level experience, which was great, and they handled it so well.
- 10:02SPEAKER_07: I don't think very many people would it would think that we have that many girls that have never played varsity before in big important roles, and so they handled it fantastic.
- 10:13SPEAKER_07: I thought we had a great non-league, you know, we're three and two, but at the end of the day, I'm I'm really proud of that still.
- 10:19SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, our two losses were battles and they were against great teams, and you know, those games could look a lot different in two months, and I hope they do.
- 10:27SPEAKER_07: And so, yeah, it's just been really exciting.
- 10:29SPEAKER_07: I'm really proud of the kids for how they've played, and I think this has really set us up to be in a great position now, starting our league play tonight.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, we're recording this on Tuesday, so it was a couple of days ago.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Eastmont tonight, and then you got West Valley on the road on Thursday when this drops.
- 10:44SPEAKER_03: Um, as as you step into that, and you talked about about getting those girls in those tight, really high pressure situations, mental, physical.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: What what you know what you worry about with that inexperience is the mental stuff.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: How do they do with that?
- 10:58SPEAKER_07: Fantastic.
- 10:59SPEAKER_07: I mean, obviously both of those play a factor.
- 11:03SPEAKER_07: Um, I think you know, we've gotten in great shape on purpose, uh, and that set us up.
- 11:09SPEAKER_07: And then mentally, obviously, when you have those five set matches against good teams, every kid's gonna have their moments.
- 11:15SPEAKER_07: And it's how we respond to those moments and how they grow that I care about.
- 11:19SPEAKER_07: I don't expect them to all be perfectly mentally tough the whole match, especially if they're not having their best physical one.
- 11:26SPEAKER_07: Um, however, it's how they grow from that, how they respond and how they learn.
- 11:29SPEAKER_07: And honestly, this group has been such a fun group to coach because they're all they all know that that's what we need to work on is our mental toughness, and they're all just doing so well at that and leaning on each other, leading each other, being each other's biggest fans for maybe in the moments that someone's not having their best game.
- 11:46SPEAKER_07: And so that's just been really exciting to watch.
- 11:49SPEAKER_03: For you as a coach, it's kind of a feel out as well in those tight situations because you're having to coach up little things, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_03: Hey, need to be here, need to be there, need to rotate this way, that that type of thing.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: And to be able to make that communication in a high stress environment and have them hear you and understand, that's a whole nother thing, right?
- 12:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah, this is again um first year where I didn't realize there was a lot of things that I needed to teach um that in the past have just kind of come with experience from the players that I had.
- 12:19SPEAKER_07: And so our first couple weeks we watched a lot of film, we broke down ourselves, uh, we did a lot more breakdown than I normally have in like a non-season non-league section of our year.
- 12:30SPEAKER_07: Um, but honestly, it's made us only better.
- 12:33SPEAKER_07: It's made me realize in the communication with the girls, like, hey coach, I actually don't know what you're talking about.
- 12:37SPEAKER_07: I'm like, great, I didn't know that.
- 12:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and so we just have such a healthy communication back and forth, and that's worked out for the better because then we've been able to work on it, and I think we're only going up from here, and so yeah, that's been a big part, but it's been great.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: So this week uh weighed into the big nine season.
- 12:53SPEAKER_03: Um, Eastmont, that's always emotional, right?
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: With that match, no matter who's on which side.
- 12:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, this is just a rivalry match.
- 13:00SPEAKER_07: I think that goes for any rivalry game you ever have.
- 13:03SPEAKER_07: Um, it's more of an emotional and mental one than it is a physical game.
- 13:07SPEAKER_07: And you know, we all everybody knows everybody in the stands.
- 13:10SPEAKER_07: They all play club together, they're all friends.
- 13:12SPEAKER_07: Like it's just it's that's what makes it so fun, but also it's so unknown because of the emotion part.
- 13:19SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
- 13:20SPEAKER_03: West Valley used to be the top team in the big nine, not so much the last several years.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: How are they?
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: What are you expecting?
- 13:27SPEAKER_07: Honestly, I don't know exactly what they got this year coming in.
- 13:31SPEAKER_07: Uh, we got to see them a little bit at the Sundome, but that one will also this whole first round of league is kind of tough because unless you played them in non-league or saw them somewhere, right?
- 13:40SPEAKER_07: You really don't know what a team looks like because they could have a bunch of returners and even look different, or they have a whole brand new squad and I don't know who those girls are.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: So you lean on the girls too, and and your knowledge of club ball and things like that.
- 13:52SPEAKER_03: You go, oh, okay, hey, that's a heavy hitter on that side, number nine on that side, that type of thing when it comes to West Valley.
- 13:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, no, more like as a coach, I do my own like film recruiting.
- 14:02SPEAKER_07: So I'll go find film and I'll break down film.
- 14:04SPEAKER_07: And I always tell my girls that they need to focus on what they're doing on our side of the net, and I'll focus on the other side and help them prepare for those X's and O's, and I'll make sure that I'm watching film to know their tendencies and know what defenses they're in that will help our game.
- 14:18SPEAKER_07: But I as a coach, I do mostly that part, and then I just put the kids in positions that I think will help.
- 14:24SPEAKER_03: That includes the service, right?
- 14:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, probably maybe more important than most other things.
- 14:30SPEAKER_03: That it's not necessarily that you're picking on the person that might struggle with a return, but to keep them out of their comfort level on what they want to do once they get that ball, right?
- 14:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think for people who don't know volleyball that well, that's part of the strategy that if you didn't know, you'd have no idea is happening.
- 14:46SPEAKER_07: Um, I tell my girls where to serve every time, and most of the time it's to try to target a certain passer or that passer's in a certain position that might not be their strongest position, or somebody else is you know transferring from a different position.
- 14:59SPEAKER_07: And that is a lot of that strategy that's pretty high-level volleyball.
- 15:02SPEAKER_07: That if you don't know the game, you wouldn't even know is happening, but is a very important part of the game.
- 15:07SPEAKER_07: Um, serve and pass wins volleyball matches.
- 15:09SPEAKER_07: And if you have two teams that are good at that, then it'll come down to defense.
- 15:12SPEAKER_07: But at the end of the day, serve and pass is the most important part.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: So I'm pretty sure I remember you you do the clipboard routine, right?
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: Where you if you go to the matches, please go to the matches.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: She'll hold up the clipboard and she'll just point over here where the other team can't see what's going on.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: That's the direction where you want the I give them numbers, and every number has a spot on the court.
- 15:31SPEAKER_07: And that's where uh I am telling them to serve because that spot on the court.
- 15:35SPEAKER_07: But yes.
- 15:36SPEAKER_03: Huge part of the game.
- 15:38SPEAKER_07: Huge.
- 15:38SPEAKER_03: Talk about we've got Kate Berry coming in here next.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: Um, is that Ava Joe's younger sister?
- 15:42SPEAKER_03: It is, yes.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: Okay, all right.
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: You know, and and that's not fair to and and I see this throughout sports where oh, hey, your older brother, your older sister was awesome, so that means you're awesome.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: Not fair to compare the two, but tell us about Kate away from Ava Joe.
- 15:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, Kate has had a phenomenal career as well.
- 16:02SPEAKER_07: I think she has set her own path.
- 16:04SPEAKER_07: Um, honestly, I don't even really compare them because different positions, different ages, just different careers in general.
- 16:11SPEAKER_07: Obviously, both fantastic athletes and they did a great job with their kids, but um, I wouldn't even compare them really.
- 16:18SPEAKER_07: I think their personalities are totally different, their, you know, their futures are different.
- 16:22SPEAKER_07: Kate's more of a beach player, Ava was indoor, and then by position, Ava was a setter, Kate's now on the outside.
- 16:29SPEAKER_07: And so it's just completely different.
- 16:30SPEAKER_07: They're different leaders, they're different just in a whole outside of the gym and their personalities.
- 16:35SPEAKER_07: And so Kate has had a phenomenal career.
- 16:38SPEAKER_07: She's been on varsity since she was a freshman.
- 16:40SPEAKER_07: She's played all sorts of different roles, you know.
- 16:42SPEAKER_07: Her freshman year, she was more of a role player coming off the bench, and then last year she was our Libero, which was a huge role.
- 16:48SPEAKER_07: And then this year I threw her on the outside, and she for a position that has a lot of pressure because you get most of the sets for a kid who's never played it, she has just been doing fantastic and getting comfortable in that position, and getting comfortable.
- 17:01SPEAKER_07: She's never played the front row before in indoor, and so that's a whole nother level to learn.
- 17:06SPEAKER_07: And the fact that she's figuring it out this early has just been really exciting.
- 17:10SPEAKER_07: And if you watch her play, you know that she's a very exciting player to watch.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: So attitude is everything, isn't it?
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, i if a play doesn't go your way, a hit doesn't go your way, especially if she's an outside hitter, that type of thing.
- 17:21SPEAKER_03: Um you gotta just erase it and kind of be that goldfish, right?
- 17:25SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and I think that's the biggest thing and the biggest difference with uh Kate this year versus the last couple years, is you know, she's always been the youngest on the team that kind of had leaders ahead of her that took that role.
- 17:35SPEAKER_07: And what's been really special as a coach this year is to watch her grow into the leadership role.
- 17:41SPEAKER_07: She has much more of a voice this year.
- 17:42SPEAKER_07: She's leading the team, not just by example, but also by her voice and by demanding from other girls.
- 17:49SPEAKER_07: And I, you know, I only have a few girls that really have that much varsity experience, and she's one of them.
- 17:54SPEAKER_07: And so she it has been so special to watch her step more into the leader role and then to tie that with the new positions she's in.
- 18:00SPEAKER_07: It just kind of goes hand in hand.
- 18:02SPEAKER_03: Do you call her Katie Bear?
- 18:03SPEAKER_07: Uh no, I just call her Kate.
- 18:05SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm asking everybody about nicknames.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:08SPEAKER_03: And it's like that doesn't exist anymore.
- 18:11SPEAKER_07: But sometimes I'll say Katie B, but Okay.
- 18:14SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 18:14SPEAKER_07: So not Katie B.
- 18:15SPEAKER_03: I will because she sounds kind of fierce if you call her Katie Bear.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Well, best of luck this week, and uh we'll catch you up down the road as we get into October.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: And you know, I if you haven't been to a Winanchee volleyball game, you're missing out.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: It's a lot of fun and high energy, and these girls are amazing.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: So congrats on the season so far and getting through the gauntlet.
- 18:38SPEAKER_03: And now here we go into Big Dine.
- 18:40SPEAKER_07: Chapter two.
- 18:41SPEAKER_07: Here we go.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: Jordan McGregor joining us here on the Winanchee Panther Podcast.
- 18:45SPEAKER_03: We'll talk to Kate Berry coming up next.
- 18:47SPEAKER_03: Stay right there.
- 18:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, and don't forget, you get a parting gift, a Pepsi Zero for you, all the fun, none of the calories.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: We'll take a break after our message from Les Schwab.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: Les Schwab Tires has been proudly serving communities for over 70 years, and we've collected thousands of inspiring stories.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Like Kate, who was off on a long road trip with her best friend, when the dash lit up like a game show.
- 19:12SPEAKER_00: They find the nearest Les Schwab.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: It was done in a flash.
- 19:17SPEAKER_00: Road trip saved.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: At Les Schwab, we're proud to keep you rolling.
- 19:21SPEAKER_00: Les Schwab Tires.
- 19:23SPEAKER_00: Our greatest story is yours.
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: Stories are composites inspired by real customer feedback.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: The What Ant Your Panther Podcast continues here on KKRV 1047.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: We have Kate Berry joining us now, who's a volleyball player.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: Do you play any other sports or just volleyball?
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: Uh just volleyball, but this year I think I'm actually going to be uh playing basketball too.
- 19:42SPEAKER_03: You are?
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Good for you.
- 19:44SPEAKER_03: What what caused you to think about doing that?
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: Well, our head coach, Jordan, is gonna be the basketball coach.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: And so that was obviously a motivation, but I mean I always love shooting hopes, so I'm excited.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: And use some of those hops you're getting in volleyball for the basketball floor.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Well, talk about this early season.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: You guys, I mean, when you came into it from the summer and you're ready to go and you saw the schedule and you're like, oh wow, these are a bunch of state caliber teams, state champion teams, that type of thing.
- 20:11SPEAKER_03: What'd you think?
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, I was just super excited to get that experience like leading into our season.
- 20:17SPEAKER_05: I think it's just a great opportunity for us to, you know, grow and kind of point out some of the flaws that we can work on.
- 20:23SPEAKER_05: And I think we played great against them, and it was just a really good opportunity to play these teams who were like super challenging and super good teams.
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: Aaron Powell What's it like to be on a team where now you're the veteran and you're the person with varsity experience, and you've got actually a lot of girls that don't have a lot of that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_05: Um it's definitely been a big change, but I will say, like, every single girl on our team is just, you know, a big leader.
- 20:45SPEAKER_05: And kind of going into this season, we made this commitment that we're not gonna have like specific captains or specific people, but each one of us is kind of a leader.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: And we had this cool system, it's called like lead me up, and this guy, Zach, kind of helped us set it up.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: But you know, we've just been like going that everyone's kind of just a leader on our team, and it's been working out really well for us.
- 21:04SPEAKER_03: You've changed positions from last year to this year.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: Talk about that transition for you and how much lead time did you have on going, okay, mentally, this is a change for me.
- 21:13SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so definitely like changing positions was it's kind of like a big difference going from Libera to the outside because you know now you're in the front row.
- 21:20SPEAKER_05: But I will say, like, beach volleyball has kind of helped me like develop that dynamic of just like hating.
- 21:25SPEAKER_05: And so I kind of had already and I've been swinging that at my gym because my dad has like a little gym that we can go and train in sometimes, and he'll just like set me up a couple balls.
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: So shout out to my dad.
- 21:34SPEAKER_05: But um yeah, I've always I've always loved hating, it's always been a dream of me like of mine to be in the front row.
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: So when I actually got the opportunity, I was actually really excited for it.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: Um and I think it's just been so fun, and everyone's been super supportive and lots of growth and just helping from the coaches and stuff.
- 21:49SPEAKER_03: How tall are you?
- 21:50SPEAKER_05: I'm oh wait, I'm five seven, I want to say.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: So you're already taller than your sister.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: So I think five six.
- 21:58SPEAKER_03: I wasn't gonna bring up AV.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Joe.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: I kind of have to.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: Um how what's your age difference?
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: Like five years, six years?
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: Um something like that?
- 22:07SPEAKER_05: Okay, wait.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: All of our family members are two years apart, so it would be four.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: Four years old.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: Okay, four years.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: So obviously, I mean she set the bar with the volleyball.
- 22:18SPEAKER_03: Is that why you got involved?
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: Because your sister was involved, or was it just kind of kind of a family thing?
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: Hey, this is what we do?
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:25SPEAKER_05: Well, I would say, like, I mean, of course, there's always like backyard peppering and just like kind of developing the love of the game because your whole family, you're kind of surrounded by it.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: And I'd say like, definitely she was an inspiration for me and my brother too.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: We kind of all just got into it.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: Um, even my dad, like my dad would put in some hours, like sending us up in the gym.
- 22:43SPEAKER_05: But yeah, our whole family kind of just loves the sport, and so yeah.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Beach versus indoors, what's the advantage?
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: What's the disadvantage for you as a player?
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: I mean, beach has got to be harder, isn't it?
- 22:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I would say like definitely beach is like for your endurance, like ooh, it's hard, like jumping in the sand and stuff like that.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: Um, definitely like lots of sweat, like dripping down my face in beach.
- 23:05SPEAKER_05: But um, I would say the sand sticks to your face.
- 23:08SPEAKER_05: Yeah, like one dive and you're just covered.
- 23:11SPEAKER_05: Um I would say I personally love the game of beach.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: Um, I also love the game of indoor, but what sparked my interest in beach so much is that there's two players on the court, you kind of get to do everything, and you're just like a huge part of the game.
- 23:23SPEAKER_05: It's super physical, super mental, it's super competitive, and I just love it.
- 23:28SPEAKER_03: Jordan as your coach.
- 23:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_03: Um and this whole volleyball world that happens in north central Washington.
- 23:33SPEAKER_03: You talk about Beach, you talk about what's happening at Manson, what's happening in Chalan, what's happening here in a state championship here a few years ago and things like that.
- 23:40SPEAKER_03: What is it?
- 23:41SPEAKER_03: What is it that's going on here that is developing this volleyball world?
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, I just think we have such a special like community here.
- 23:49SPEAKER_05: I think we just have all our we're just all so competitive and so fiery and so gritty, and like maybe we're not like the tallest, like most physical people, but I just think we have such a special like love for the game.
- 24:01SPEAKER_05: And it's just it's super cool that we have some really cool, like really great beach players in Washington, even though like you wouldn't think of Washington as your typical like beach volleyball estate.
- 24:10SPEAKER_05: But I think it's cool that we just develop such amazing players and just because I think it just comes from like the love of the game, and all the girls here, I just think that they just care so much about the sport and it's just super fun.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: Your coach said that you have more of a future in beach than you do in indoor.
- 24:25SPEAKER_03: Is that true?
- 24:26SPEAKER_05: Yes, I am playing beach volleyball in college.
- 24:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, you already picked where you're going?
- 24:30SPEAKER_05: Yes, Cal Poly.
- 24:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 24:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, congratulations.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Thank you.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: So when did you make that choice?
- 24:35SPEAKER_05: Um, I made that choice past summer, this past summer, and it was around I think like June 15th, 16th, that area.
- 24:43SPEAKER_03: Why Cal Poly?
- 24:45SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean, like it's just like a dream because I mean, first of all, like the ocean's right there.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: But second of all, I just the coaches there are super special.
- 24:54SPEAKER_05: They care a lot about their players.
- 24:55SPEAKER_05: Um it's a super competitive program, which was something I was definitely looking for.
- 24:59SPEAKER_05: And yeah, it's just a really good opportunity.
- 25:02SPEAKER_05: And I was really excited to participate.
- 25:03SPEAKER_03: Are you are just to get that done and not have to think about it, not have to worry about it?
- 25:07SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh, yes.
- 25:09SPEAKER_05: Like the whole recruiting process is just something that it's it's hard.
- 25:14SPEAKER_05: It's definitely super challenging.
- 25:15SPEAKER_05: So I was so excited to be done with it, and it's like a bigger leaf off your back.
- 25:19SPEAKER_03: So what do you want to do with your education?
- 25:22SPEAKER_05: Um I'm not quite sure yet, but I mean, academically, Cow Poly is just like a super, super academic school.
- 25:29SPEAKER_05: So I'm really excited for all the opportunities that are in line there, but I haven't quite figured it out.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: San Luis Abisbo, right?
- 25:34SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Um nicknames.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: I I keep asking everybody if they have nicknames.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: I just asked your coach, do you call her Katie Bear?
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: She goes, oh no.
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: No, no, like she would get in trouble if she called you Katie Bear.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: So do you have a nickname?
- 25:49SPEAKER_05: Um I would say a lot of the girls on the team call me Katie B.
- 25:52SPEAKER_05: Like Katie B.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: Katie B.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Is your what is your given name?
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: What is your birth name?
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: Kate Very.
- 25:58SPEAKER_05: Kate Very.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: It's just Kate.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I had that conversation in the hallway once with your sister too about Ava Joe.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: Do I have to use the Joe?
- 26:05SPEAKER_03: Is it just Ava?
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: What do I and she corrected me on that.
- 26:09SPEAKER_03: Um so if you have free time, it sounds like all your free time is volleyball.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: But do you do anything else?
- 26:14SPEAKER_03: Do you have fun?
- 26:15SPEAKER_03: Do you I mean, you you look like you have fun playing volleyball, so I guess okay, I'm not gonna discount that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 26:21SPEAKER_05: As fun as volleyball is, I definitely have some free time on me, and I would say just like my favorite thing to do with my free time is obviously like hang out with my friends and kind of like build that social aspect and like you know, support our other sports, go to the games.
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: But like hobby-wise, I kinda well I don't know, I do a lot of like silly stuff.
- 26:40SPEAKER_05: I love to craft, I love yeah, I love to craft.
- 26:44SPEAKER_05: Okay, like craft what is craft for you?
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: Um, I love to like make things for like gift giving, I would say.
- 26:50SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't know.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: Like not knitting or anything like that?
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: No, probably not.
- 26:55SPEAKER_05: I like to like paint.
- 26:56SPEAKER_05: I'm not I wouldn't say I'm like good at it or anything, but I enjoy like painting and like just making like little cards.
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: Okay, so you do the homemade card thing?
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: My wife is all about this.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: She goes, Don't go buy me anything.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: I want you to make it because it means more.
- 27:10SPEAKER_05: It does mean more.
- 27:11SPEAKER_05: I agree with that.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, do you have a bestie on the team?
- 27:14SPEAKER_05: No, I think that what's so special about this team is that no matter how close you are with someone off the court, like the second that we step into the court together, we just we don't have any clicks.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: And I think that's something that is really special about our team because it just helps build this like chemistry that's just like kind of unmatched.
- 27:30SPEAKER_03: What is the biggest thing you've learned about yourself so far in this early season?
- 27:34SPEAKER_05: Um I think I've learned that like something super important is just like being selfless matters so much.
- 27:40SPEAKER_05: Because I think like in the past, I didn't realize how much like being a heady player kind of affects your team.
- 27:46SPEAKER_05: And I think this year we've all really focused on just like staying out of your heads like for your team, you know, because that just like brings everyone up together.
- 27:52SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 27:53SPEAKER_05: And yeah.
- 27:54unknown: Yeah.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: If you stew in your own juices on whatever just happened, then you're not helping the other five that are on the floor with today.
- 27:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: That's fair.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: So no nickname, we've got to work on that.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: KDB, I guess.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: All right, sounds good.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Uh it's homecoming week.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Are you having fun with that?
- 28:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, I'm super excited.
- 28:11SPEAKER_05: I'm involved in ASB, so we've been dressing up for Spirit Week and all that.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: Today I had to actually bring three outfits to school because I had this one and Jordy wanted me in the Penache volleyball gear.
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: And then I had to dress up for the Spirit Week, which was granola girl, if you know what that means.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 28:26SPEAKER_03: And then wait a minute.
- 28:27SPEAKER_03: What describe that for us?
- 28:28SPEAKER_03: What is Granola Girl for you?
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: Um I would say it's like maybe like a hat or like a beanie.
- 28:34SPEAKER_05: It's like something you would kind of go hiking in.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: Like something like that.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: Okay, all right, all right, got it.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:39SPEAKER_03: Got that.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: Uh dance Saturday.
- 28:41SPEAKER_03: I heard Jordan said that uh she gave you guys the day off.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: So you'd be able to go to the dance and have fun.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be a blast.
- 28:48SPEAKER_05: I'm super excited.
- 28:49SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:50SPEAKER_03: Now I'm hearing a lot that it's friends going with friends, not dates type of thing.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:55SPEAKER_03: But what is it for you for the homecoming dance?
- 28:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I'm going with a date, but I know some people are going with friends.
- 29:01SPEAKER_05: It's definitely like you're kind of like in a group with your friends, but sometimes you bring a date too.
- 29:06SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: So the date is this your boyfriend uh is uh I'm probably getting way too personal here.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: No, you're good.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: You're good.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:13SPEAKER_05: No, not my boyfriend.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 29:14SPEAKER_03: And did he ask you or you ask him?
- 29:16SPEAKER_05: He asked me.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 29:17SPEAKER_05: The boy typically asked the girl.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: How did he ask you?
- 29:20SPEAKER_03: Was it just a generic, hey, would you go?
- 29:22SPEAKER_05: No.
- 29:22SPEAKER_03: So now it's a big production, right?
- 29:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 29:25SPEAKER_05: So you kind of like I would say the typical thing is you like make a poster, like a big white poster, and then you like write something on it.
- 29:33SPEAKER_05: Like, there's different ways to ask people.
- 29:35SPEAKER_05: Um, and then maybe like you bring like flowers or like something like that.
- 29:39SPEAKER_05: And I would say typically most people like knock at your door.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: So that's what happened with me.
- 29:43SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: And nobody calls it homecoming, right?
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Is it hoko?
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Hoko, yeah.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Hoko's the brief shape.
- 29:49SPEAKER_03: Just wanted to make sure I'm hip on the on the uh terminology there.
- 29:53SPEAKER_03: Well, Kate, uh, congratulations on your season so far.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: I know it's been a challenge, you guys are three and two, but I mean to get through that and to have wins on your on your shelf is good.
- 30:04SPEAKER_03: And good luck in the big nine season.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Stay healthy, most importantly.
- 30:07SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much.
- 30:07SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Kate Barry joining us here on the When At You Panther Podcast.

- 30:52SPEAKER_03: It's Moses Lake and Winatchy coming up on Friday at Leapoff to Field of the Apple Bowl.
- 30:56SPEAKER_03: 6 30 with the pregame, 7 o'clock with a kickoff right here on the uh YouTube channel.
- 31:01SPEAKER_03: Bruce Bennett joining us now.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: Bruce and I go way back.
- 31:03SPEAKER_03: I was trying to figure, I ask I think I actually met you before the AppleSox started, back in 99, right around there, something like that.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Were you involved?
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: Bruce, by the way, is the historian basically for Wenatchee High School and many other schools across Washington State and also uh AppleSox uh statistician for a number of years and just a guy who loves numbers.
- 31:26SPEAKER_03: He loves numbers so much, he's got the pencil behind his ear right now because he's ready to jot down and figure things out.
- 31:33SPEAKER_01: That started in high school.
- 31:34SPEAKER_03: It's been there ever since.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: You now if I remember right, you had some mechanical pencils, didn't you, when you were doing the AppleSox stuff?
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 31:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 31:42SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 31:43SPEAKER_03: Um so Bruce is a graduate.
- 31:45SPEAKER_03: We were talking uh during the broadcast last week, and thank goodness because there was a it was two weeks ago uh when when when Anchie went over to play against Lake Washington at Kirkland, Bruce and his lovely wife Rexine are graduates of Lake Washington High School, and thank goodness he provided me with a lot of fodder to talk about because there was an injury early in the second half.
- 32:04SPEAKER_03: There was probably 10, 15 minutes where they had to get an ambulance and all that type of thing.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: And so I went through everything you gave you gave me.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: So let's talk about that.
- 32:14SPEAKER_03: Getting involved in in numbers and all of that, you say that started in high school for you?
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_01: When I was at Lake Washington, I got involved with this.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: I was a statistician for the uh the boys' basketball team.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: I was a sports editor of our student newspaper, and so it all started there and just kept going.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: And you and you kept keeping track of all of that.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Sorry, I got a phone call in the middle of this.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: There we go.
- 32:44SPEAKER_03: So did it become just game to game, and then suddenly it's well, we got to keep track of what's happening for the season.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: And hey, how does this guy compare to what happened years ago?
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: How did that Yeah, I I just started doing basically team stuff.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: A lot of the individual I did not do uh stats, but basically team.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: The record wins and losses, home and away, league, non-league, playoff, uh breaking all that down and and just accumulating it.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: And when we got over here, I actually started with a college and did about a year's worth there.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: And then I started with the high school, I started with football, and then I got into all the sports before I was done.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And uh and just putting it on the computer.
- 33:29SPEAKER_03: How did it come to be where Jim Corcoran got a hold of you for doing AppleSocks when they first started back in 2000?
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: I had worked for him when he and Mike Cassidy had the Wenatchee Business Journal.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: So he knew of what you're talking about, what my Your affliction.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 33:48SPEAKER_01: So he asked me if I wanted to do the now, whoa, I actually get paid to watch baseball.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: This is a good deal.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: So I did that for 17 years.
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: Is baseball your favorite?
- 33:59SPEAKER_03: Do you have a favorite?
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Baseball probably, yeah.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: Um it's such a numbers game and always has been.
- 34:06SPEAKER_03: And I uh we're gonna talk about the the change in the world as far as who's keeping track and being able to find out those statistics and things like that.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: I remember when I So w when Bruce got involved with the AppleSocks, I too got involved with the AppleSocks.
- 34:22SPEAKER_03: I was working at KPQ back in the day, and and their first uh several seasons, I was the play-by-play announcer for the AppleSocks.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: And that was interesting too, because we'd go on the road for a series and Bruce would say, Okay, I need your your score sheets because there was no I mean, the internet was still pretty young at that time, and there wasn't a lot of keeping track of what was going on.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: No, no.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: So you and I'd I'd show up down at the station and we'd get your scorebook out and I'd copy it off into mine so I could go home and accumulate the statistics.
- 34:55SPEAKER_01: Just statistics.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: Trevor Burrus, Jr.
- 34:56SPEAKER_03: And I I was never I you know, I I think I kept score for my dad back when he was a little league coach, that type of thing.
- 35:03SPEAKER_03: But nobody ever taught me how to keep score.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: And my scorebook is way different than an official scorebook like what Bruce had and or what he has still.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: And so there was a lot of Eric, what do you mean here?
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Because there's the empty blanket, I would just, you know, kind of fill it in and do the and things like that.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: And so there was there was uh uh education on uh my nomenclature versus how it's actually supposed to be done.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: Never did do it right, still don't do it right.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: But um that whole keeping track thing, it means a lot to a lot of people.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Were you surprised about that?
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: About how how much it means to people?
- 35:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was.
- 35:39SPEAKER_01: Uh you know, I just thought, well, I have this stuff, I might as well dispense it, you know, get it out and see.
- 35:47SPEAKER_01: And so I did it.
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: And then it I've had some really positive comments through the years, and I had no idea and and how far some of it has spread.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, I email out X number.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm finding out a lot of those are being forwarded.
- 36:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: And so where it all goes, I don't know.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: Because I'd I've run into people on the street, so to speak, and they'll bring up the thing.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: How how do they even know about this?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, so I got the Bruce report.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah exact exactly.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: So no, I was surprised how far it spread and and the comments I've gotten back.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: So it's that encourages you to I don't even know.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: When did you start the Bruce report?
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: How long ago was it?
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Well, I I looked the other day for I don't know why now, but it was nineteen years ago.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: You're a numbers guy, of course you're gonna 19 years.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:36SPEAKER_03: And you you not only help local schools and organizations on numbers, but you you help across the state, don't you?
- 36:46SPEAKER_03: Or you have in the past.
- 36:48SPEAKER_03: You're alma mater.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, for sure they are.
- 36:51SPEAKER_01: But and and Friday Harbor, where our our two sons graduated from Friday Harbor, so I do the same thing for them.
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: Um and I I get I don't do th teams other around the state at all, but I do get through the years with starting in Friday Harbor, I get phone calls and emails.
- 37:12SPEAKER_01: Hey, I've just talked to Eric and he said you might you might know.
- 37:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: So I that kind of a thing.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: I've had calls from around the state and emails for that, but that's just a specific question they had.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure.
- 37:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that was some of the questions that you know, and Bruce usually covers it in his report and is spot on.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: As far as when Antie playing like Washington, for example, in football, that was the first time ever.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: And you know, I can lean on you and go, if Bruce says it, then it's true because you've taken the time to do the research and things.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: I mean, you've gone so far as to go back into microfiche and everything else, haven't you?
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Oh I spent hours going and and down at the library here in town.
- 37:59SPEAKER_01: Hours going just going through there.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: And I've gone over and then Wananche World didn't have everything.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: So I so I go to the University of Washington library and spend a whole day over there and go through Yakima, Walla, Walla, Tri-Cities, papers, trying to find things I could not find locally.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: How frustrating is it to be a numbers guy today and and not have the coverage like we once did in the newspaper?
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, when I grew up, that's a couple of years ago.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: And so I when I was playing Little League in Seattle, if I pitched, my name appeared in the Seattle Times the next day.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Now it was little.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: And it was in the little agate stuff, but it would appear there as with a score by innings and so forth.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: It would be in the and the Seattle Times.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: And now you can't even find high school stuff in there, let alone a little league.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:57SPEAKER_03: So that ability to do the individual stats like we talked about is is almost impossible these days, unless you're connected to the coach directly because the coaches do keep track.
- 39:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: Well depends on who you're talking about.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: Well it depends on the sport too.
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it depends on that's one of the biggest drawbacks I've had is trying to find things here.
- 39:23SPEAKER_01: For what to complete one ancient, I never will, because what I call the team sports.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: The team sport to me is a you have to be on a team to get the state, which is the minority.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: The majority of the sports we have here I call individual sports.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: Because if you're a golfer, a swimmer, tennis, you can get the state individually.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Um and those are the hard ones.
- 39:46SPEAKER_01: The team I think I've got like all but three scores in the whole history of Winanchee for the team.
- 39:56SPEAKER_01: But individual, I'm barely over fifty percent.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: And that's tough because I'm sure you get that question a lot.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: Well, hey, Bruce, how many touchdowns did Rocky Skoliski have back in that 70 season?
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: If it wasn't in the paper, it's kind of hard to tell.
- 40:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:10SPEAKER_01: It is.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's for the just trying to find the final standings.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: And it's uh it's well, part of it's frustrating is the well the league doesn't keep track of anything.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: And to me that's what it's almost criminal.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:26SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 40:27SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 40:28SPEAKER_03: Well, and and you know, it depended on which sport you're talking about, as to how you know everything's on the web these days and what exactly you're looking at.
- 40:38SPEAKER_03: For example, the West Coast League and the Winatchie Apple Sox and the North Division, South Division, you got the first half, you got the second half, you got the whole thing.
- 40:45SPEAKER_03: Uh it depends on which tab you're clicking on to know what the heck's going on.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: So, you know, as a person who's broadcasting games and a person who's as I know you are keeping track of things, you get down to the season.
- 40:59SPEAKER_03: Okay, what's the magic number?
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Well, it depends on which one you're looking at here.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: That that's gotta be as a stats guy, that's gotta be pretty frustrating.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it uh I can figure this stuff out.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: It's it works, but it not having it right there in front of you where you can get one source kind of and pick it all out easy.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: Now back in the day when the Apple Socks first started, that was where I really got to know Bruce.
- 41:25SPEAKER_03: And and uh if you if I listen back to a lot of my games, you're gonna hear that's usually Bruce that was next to me up in the press box at uh Paul Thomas Field, uh who was a fan besides being a statistician, and I love that.
- 41:41SPEAKER_03: But uh I think also that Camarada we had and and Ken Burtaw was inducted into the Winnachia High School Hall of Fame here the other day, and and he was up in the booth, and then the original PA announcer was Dave Bernstein, who knows baseball too.
- 41:53SPEAKER_03: If there was a question about what was going on on the field as far as an error, a hit, the things like that, Bruce would turn and go, Okay, guys, what do you think?
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's I love that about you because you're the you're the home statistician.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: You're the official book for that game.
- 42:10SPEAKER_03: But you were willing to go, okay, uh, this is what I think it is.
- 42:13SPEAKER_03: What do you guys think?
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: It was rare, but I like that.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: No, it was it was nice to have input.
- 42:21unknown: Yeah.
- 42:22SPEAKER_03: D are you still keeping track of numbers today?
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: I mean, we we see it in the in the Bruce report.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:28SPEAKER_03: I keep well like back to the So at your house, do you have like a library, uh uh shelves and shelves of paperwork, or is it all digital now?
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: Or it's I've got more paperwork than most people, but pretty much it's all digital.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:42SPEAKER_03: How's Rexine feel about you and your numbers?
- 42:44SPEAKER_03: Of course, I mean she's known you forever.
- 42:46SPEAKER_03: So she just it's part of me.
- 42:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:50SPEAKER_03: Does she ever turn to you and say, Bruce, enough with the numbers?
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: No.
- 42:53unknown: No.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: No.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: It gives me something to do.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: Particularly once we retired, then uh yeah, it's given me something.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: I in fact, I wonder sometimes what I would do if I didn't do this.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: Because I enjoy I just get into it.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: I was spending a lot of time on it yesterday again.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: We were gone this weekend, so I had to catch up with Friday Harbor, Lake Washington, and Menanchee.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:17SPEAKER_03: So you're you're concurrently doing uh basically a Bruce report for those two schools as well?
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Football only.
- 43:23SPEAKER_01: Oh, football only.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: It's way too hard to get all the rest of the stuff.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: Living here and there over on the other side.
- 43:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: And a lot of times it's about the the coach and their willingness to share.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: Uh as a sports guy at uh radio and TV, it's sometimes like pulling teeth.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Just tell me what the score was, please.
- 43:42SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: So Moses Lake, that's my next question for you.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: I know you've already probably done your research for the Panthers, Moses Lake.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: When's the last time when Anche beat Moses Lake in football?
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: It's been a few years.
- 43:53SPEAKER_03: Oh, you haven't?
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: No.
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: Sorry to put you on the uh Oh gosh.
- 43:59SPEAKER_01: It's I
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: No that When Atheie had a mini playoff years at Moses Lake here seven, eight years ago, something like that.
- 44:07SPEAKER_03: Uh where Winatchie was, you know, there was a I think three-way tie for second in the Big Nine, something along those lines.
- 44:14SPEAKER_03: Um but I honestly doing games, I can't remember last time when Actue beat Moses Lake in football.
- 44:22SPEAKER_03: It's been quite a while.
- 44:23SPEAKER_03: Yes, it has.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: Uh Bruce, if somebody wants to get your report, how do we do that?
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: I mean you can contact me, uh Eric at kkrv.com.
- 44:33SPEAKER_03: I'll forward it to you, like like Bruce is saying.
- 44:36SPEAKER_03: But uh is there a way we can get it?
- 44:38SPEAKER_03: I know you don't post it to a website.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: No, I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
- 44:44SPEAKER_01: Uh probably never.
- 44:45SPEAKER_03: And Bruce doesn't do the social media stuff, so no.
- 44:48SPEAKER_01: Uh well, I mean they just they have to ask.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_01: And if they can ask, and my like my email, I guess, is it's uh statman, s t-a-t man 91 at Gmail.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Nine one Y91.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Birthday.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 45:05SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: September 1st.
- 45:07SPEAKER_03: Happy birthday.
- 45:08SPEAKER_03: You're how old?
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: How young are you?
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: 84.
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: 84 and still at it.
- 45:13SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 45:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, give me something to do.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: Well, and my grandmother, uh, God rest her soul, she did crossword puzzles every single day.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: She would watch uh what is it, Wheel of Fortune, and she can figure out those those those you know, the phrases and everything, I mean, quicker than any of us.
- 45:31SPEAKER_03: And that's how she kept her mind acutely aware of what was going on by doing those crossword puzzles.
- 45:36SPEAKER_03: And then she also was a huge Mariner fan, a huge Dave Neehouse fan back in the day.
- 45:41SPEAKER_03: And she kept score.
- 45:42SPEAKER_03: She had her score book and she would listen to every single Mariner game and would keep score.
- 45:47SPEAKER_03: That seems to be almost a lost art.
- 45:49SPEAKER_03: You uh you go to a game, you hardly ever see anybody actually keeping score anymore.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: No.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: And used to see quite a few.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:56SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: Well, thank you for keeping track.
- 45:59SPEAKER_03: You're welcome.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: Bruce Bennett uh joining us here.
- 46:01SPEAKER_03: And uh again, uh we are lost as broadcasters without the Bruce Report each week.
- 46:06SPEAKER_03: And now that I'm doing all the Panther stuff, I I uh just feel so smart.
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: Thanks to Bruce.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: We'll come back with more of the When At You Panther podcast coming up next year on KKRV 1047.

- 47:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 47:01SPEAKER_04: It was a really fun time.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: Always one of those things that you get kind of anxious because you just want it to be right for those folks.
- 47:07SPEAKER_04: So you just put a lot of energy into it, and uh, I think it it couldn't have gone better.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: It was really fun to have the 83 volleyball team come on Thursday to the volleyball match.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: I think that meant a lot to them to kind of get that extra time.
- 47:18SPEAKER_04: Uh really enjoyed our Saturday.
- 47:20SPEAKER_04: Thanks to you for uh being our our voice of the event.
- 47:24SPEAKER_04: But uh it was really neat to see uh so many people come to the Pioneer Gym for that hour and get uh individuals an opportunity to talk about others and talk about their experience.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: Uh one of my highlights uh of the day was as I was leaving the stadium after the football game, uh, my kiddo from the 2016 boys soccer team was walking with a member of the 1970 football team and was asking him about his letterman's jacket.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: Because our kids in 2016 don't really wear letterman's jackets.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: And he was talking about how cool that jacket was and the pins and all the things, and watching the two of them walk through the parking lot having a conversation about their experience as being a Panther athlete was really pretty cool.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: That's yeah, because that's what uh twenties versus in their seventies.
- 48:11SPEAKER_04: Yep.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Uh love to have that cross over.
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it was neat, and and I could tell by the end of the day when we brought everybody out at halftime and we took that group picture, they had started to get to know one another and have a respect and appreciation for each other.
- 48:25SPEAKER_04: So it was neat to see them pull together to take the picture and then on the way back high-fiving each other and talking to each other and gaining that appreciation for one another.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: And this has become an evolution for the Hall of Fame, right?
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, it didn't used to be that way.
- 48:38SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: It I think our first year was what 96, 95, something like that.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: And it's always been athletes, administrators, and coaches.
- 48:47SPEAKER_04: And it wasn't until just this last uh winter that our Hall of Fame committee accepted the proposal to add teams, contributors.
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: Uh it's it's just really, really neat because those are people that make the fabric of this entire department.
- 49:02SPEAKER_04: So it's really, really neat and long overdue and um just really a highlight for me for sure of being back here the last year and a half.
- 49:09SPEAKER_03: Well, and you can see the emotion too from the 70 team, the 70 football team, uh, because you know that feeling of once a panther, always a panther.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: I know that's part of this culture that you're trying to work on too right now.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: And uh that can't help but uh help it to have that and and to see that.
- 49:25SPEAKER_03: And as you talked about, you know, you got somebody from 2016 soccer talking about this 1970 graduate, you know, from the football team and and that difference, but there's no difference regarding a Panther.
- 49:37SPEAKER_04: Yep, that's right.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: And and that was really clear.
- 49:39SPEAKER_04: We could see that over the course of the entire kind of weekend and and watching folks interact with each other and and just the I I heard one of the 70s football players say, Man, I I thought we were a really good team, but we're in good company.
- 49:52SPEAKER_04: Like, look at how talented these other groups of kids were um in their time as well.
- 49:56SPEAKER_04: So uh and I just I really value that what we're trying to create is that we are Winanchee, we are Panthers, and I think all of these folks have felt a special connection in their own way, but now it's it's just different.
- 50:08SPEAKER_04: Now they're really part of our history.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: Well, this is dropping on Thursday, of course.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, we're gonna uh catch you up to date on what's happening.
- 50:15SPEAKER_03: There's a lot happening as this drops.
- 50:17SPEAKER_03: We've got cross country uh at Sunnyside today at 3 30, the Wenanchee Slow Pitch at Davis for a doubleheader at 3 30.
- 50:24SPEAKER_03: You've got the girls swim and dive uh there at Eisenhower, so a lot of schools your team's going to get.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no kidding.
- 50:30SPEAKER_03: Uh volleyball is on the road at West Valley on Thursday night at 7 o'clock.
- 50:35SPEAKER_03: Um, and then of course Panther Football, homecoming on Friday night against Moses Lake.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: We'll have that broadcast here on our uh YouTube channel.
- 50:42SPEAKER_03: And then Saturday, don't forget you've got uh Winatchie Girls uh the swim and dive meet.
- 50:46SPEAKER_03: This is they're hosting it, right?
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Yes, they are.
- 50:48SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's a big deal.
- 50:49SPEAKER_04: Their first home event in the pool.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: If you haven't been to one, go to one.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: Uh my daughter swam.
- 50:54SPEAKER_03: That was the first time I ever went to a swim meet, was in fact it was Winatchie East Pond.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: And I was like, oh wow, this is really cool.
- 51:00SPEAKER_04: It is really neat.
- 51:01SPEAKER_04: And the our pool is just kind of small and quaint enough.
- 51:04SPEAKER_04: It has a really great atmosphere to it, and um I'm I'm looking forward to watching our girls swim.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: Uh as well on Saturday, Girls Soccer is hosting West Valley.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: That's at noon, so you can stay right here in the campus area and take in a couple of different sports and go cheer on the uh soccer team.
- 51:19SPEAKER_03: And then, of course, you got uh homecoming Saturday night.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: So it's a busy week here.
- 51:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and kids have a kids have a lot going on, and you can you can tell they're excited watching uh our student bodies getting excited for the football game, and it's fun when when you're winning games and student bodies really excited about it.
- 51:34SPEAKER_03: Well, and winning games, how they're winning games too.
- 51:36SPEAKER_03: I mean it it uh I've I've been impressed with this football team.
- 51:39SPEAKER_03: And I'm not saying that just because you know I'm broadcasting the games.
- 51:43SPEAKER_03: I've been very impressed with this football team so far.
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 51:45SPEAKER_04: And honestly, like when you just from the very beginning on the the trip to California they took, if if you look at my door in my office, there's about 20 thank you notes taped on the door.
- 51:55SPEAKER_04: So uh the kids are uh really appreciative of the experience they're having.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: When you talk to kids about their experience, they're talking about the discipline and the work they're putting in, and you know, they're they're really shifting shifting the culture.
- 52:07SPEAKER_03: Uh I love the Panther of the Week.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: Um hopefully we get two next week, but schedules, you know, sometimes that doesn't work out.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: So we'll have that coming up next week.
- 52:14SPEAKER_03: We'll uh again talk to Steve Roach, who's the cross-country coach.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: Uh they're off and running on their season.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: Uh we'll also talk with one of his runners, I think.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 52:23SPEAKER_04: Ian Williams will be here.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 52:24SPEAKER_03: And then uh Ashton Kirkpatrick, the head uh girl soccer coach, and we're gonna talk with one of her athletes as well.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: Have she has she?
- 52:31SPEAKER_04: Well, we're trying to get Sophia Garcia here.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 52:33SPEAKER_04: She's a running start student, so we have to coordinate schedules.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 52:36SPEAKER_03: I how the how the kids handle that, I mean, back in our day, they're going to college and going to high school and then playing sports, I wouldn't have been able to do that.
- 52:44SPEAKER_04: It's a lot of they have to really manage their own schedule.
- 52:47SPEAKER_03: So that's Yeah, definitely so.
- 52:49SPEAKER_03: Well, BJ, thank you very much for for taking the uh the time and and the effort and supporting us as we do this too.
- 52:55SPEAKER_03: So I re very much.
- 52:56SPEAKER_03: It's been a fun journey so far.
