Speaker 1: 10 years of Talk About That episodes airing most every week,
• 0:46
Speaker 1: Johnny and I have hit an especially busy season in
• 0:49
Speaker 1: both of our lives that has required us to take
• 0:51
Speaker 1: a little hiatus from weekly episodes. Hey, but fear not.
• 0:55
Speaker 1: We'd still like to bring you some of the best
• 0:57
Speaker 1: of Talk About That. These are some of our most
• 0:59
Speaker 1: downloaded episodes from the past several years. So whether you're

Speaker 1: favorite talks. As always, thanks so much for listening, and

• 1:21
Speaker 2: Today on Talk About That, John ponders whether anyone hate
• 1:24
Speaker 2: listens to the show and makes sermon illustrations out of
• 1:26
Speaker 2: old cartoons. Meanwhile, I tell you why the first cell
• 1:30
Speaker 2: phone call was used to troll a competitor and and
• 1:32
Speaker 2: what I learned from Jim Carrey about being a comedian.
• 1:35
Speaker 2: Plus a conversation about human nature, humility, and why main
• 1:39
Speaker 2: character energy isn't the flex you think it is. Today's
• 1:42
Speaker 2: episode is not sponsored by Gatorade, when you want some
• 1:44
Speaker 2: fruit punch, but also a pound of salt. But first,
• 1:48
Speaker 2: a word from our actual sponsor. It's another week, Johnny.
• 1:58
Speaker 2: It's another episode of Talk About That. We're here, man.
• 2:02
Speaker 2: We can't be stopped. Many have tried. A few have succeeded.
• 2:07
Speaker 2: Do you think we have enemies?
• 2:09
  Speaker 1: You know what?
• 2:10
Speaker 2: I will say this. This stage of life.
• 2:12
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: The biggest surprise. Well, there's a lot of surprises.
• 2:15
  Speaker 1: Sure.
• 2:16
Speaker 2: But I am shocked that I have enemies. Yeah.
• 2:19
Speaker 1: I never had enemies as a young man.
• 2:21
Speaker 2: Do you think the podcast itself has enemies? I don't know.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: I don't know where all they're coming from. It would
• 2:25
Speaker 2: explain a lot. You know? If you're like, oh, that's
• 2:29
Speaker 2: what's going on. The podcast is doing well, actually. Yeah,
• 2:32
  Speaker 2: you're right.
• 2:33
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: Because we have friends, John. Listen. I wonder if we
• 2:37
Speaker 2: have any friends. And the enemy of my enemies.
• 2:39
Speaker 1: Is my, an enemy.
• 2:40
Speaker 2: I wonder if we have any friends. Yeah. Who are
• 2:43
Speaker 2: really frenemies. That they listen. Right.
• 2:46
Speaker 1: But like, to be a little bit like, yeah, these jerks.
• 2:49
Speaker 1: I just can't believe they said it. And they kind
• 2:50
Speaker 1: of listen as a fear.
• 2:51
Speaker 2: They hate watch. Yeah. They hate listen. Do you do
• 2:54
Speaker 2: that to anything? Mm-hmm.
• 2:56
  Speaker 1: Probably.
• 2:58
Speaker 2: I don't love it about myself, but probably there's probably
• 3:00
Speaker 2: things I'm like, let's see what this guy's doing. Yeah.
• 3:03
  Speaker 2: I don't do that a lot.
• 3:05
  Speaker 1: Occasionally there's a guy we've referenced before. Who's like all
• 3:10
  Speaker 1: about pastoral clickbait.
• 3:12
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 3:12
Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? That's his whole thing.
• 3:14
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 3:14
Speaker 1: And I'm not saying he may have other things he wants,
• 3:16
Speaker 1: but that's, that's his claim to fame.
• 3:18
Speaker 2: And he's like, he wants you to watch it and
• 3:20
Speaker 2: be mad. Yeah. And people are like, They get entertained
• 3:24
  Speaker 2: by it.
• 3:24
Speaker 1: A guy just think, he's crazy, man.
• 3:27
Speaker 2: He's crazy. And I'm like, every time we watch it,
• 3:30
Speaker 2: we just told him to do it again. Yeah, you're
• 3:32
  Speaker 2: feeding the beast.
• 3:33
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 3:34
Speaker 2: Guys, feed this beast, though. Johnny, if they wanted to
• 3:36
Speaker 2: feed the beast. Go to feedthebeast.com. I don't know where
• 3:41
Speaker 2: that would take you. Please don't do that. We don't know.
• 3:43
Speaker 2: Go to talkaboutthatpodcast.com. 300 plus archived episodes, John.
• 3:46
  Speaker 1: 350 plus.
• 3:46
Speaker 2: 350 plus archived episodes for you there. Enjoy or hate watch.
• 3:54
Speaker 1: That's a long time for two shows.
• 3:56
Speaker 2: It'd be a long time to invest in that kind
• 3:58
Speaker 2: of an enterprise where you're just like, hate watching.
• 4:01
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 4:02
Speaker 2: Watch because you like us. Anyway, if you want to
• 4:05
Speaker 2: support the show with money, that helps us do things.
• 4:12
Speaker 2: You could click on the upper right-hand link. Get ad-free
• 4:14
  Speaker 2: content that way.
• 4:16
Speaker 1: What if we could take support? In, like, more in-kind ways,
• 4:19
Speaker 1: like the olden days. Like, you know, someone bakes us
• 4:22
  Speaker 1: a pie.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: You mean, like, olden, olden? Like, they just have a
• 4:24
Speaker 2: gold coin? Ping! They just drop it on the counter?
• 4:27
Speaker 1: No, not that olden. Did you know the olden days,
• 4:30
Speaker 1: they would cut coins, and they would cut them. So
• 4:33
Speaker 1: instead of, like, you didn't have chains, you just cut
• 4:35
Speaker 1: the coin. Well, that seems like... If you watch The
• 4:37
Speaker 1: Curse of Oak Island, you find all kinds of, like,
• 4:39
Speaker 1: Roman cut coins, because that's, yeah, this, oh, you needed
• 4:42
Speaker 1: three quarters of this value.
• 4:44
Speaker 2: I'll just cut a quarter out. But now it's all sharp, and.
• 4:48
Speaker 2: They made it work, Johnny. Cut yourself on your coins.
• 4:50
Speaker 2: That's why the Roman Empire exists today.
• 4:52
  Speaker 1: It continues.
• 4:53
Speaker 2: Because of cut coins?
• 4:54
Speaker 1: It just keeps going.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: Do you think the Roman Empire still exists? I don't.
• 4:58
Speaker 2: That was sarcasm. Oh, I see. But, I don't know. Well,
• 5:04
Speaker 2: there'll be Visigoths, invaders, the Moors. Oh. All those people
• 5:10
Speaker 2: coming in. Yes. The Germanic tribes. Yeah.
• 5:13
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 5:14
  Speaker 2: Visigoths. That's a, that's a. That's a cool name. They
• 5:17
Speaker 2: sound like some bad dudes.
• 5:18
Speaker 1: Yeah, like if you had that name, you were bound
• 5:20
  Speaker 1: to conquer Europe.
• 5:22
Speaker 2: We still have Goths, but it's not the same. It's
• 5:24
Speaker 2: just kids wearing black makeup.
• 5:26
Speaker 1: They're super just emo about everything you ever said.
• 5:29
Speaker 2: Yeah, they're just like, nobody.
• 5:31
Speaker 1: You'll never conquer England that way.
• 5:33
Speaker 2: You're like, well, that's not... Stop moping and get a
• 5:36
Speaker 2: hold of yourself, Goths. Get your pickaxe and do something. Yeah.
• 5:41
Speaker 2: Be more like the Visigoths, not less like the actual.
• 5:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 5:44
Speaker 2: Visigoths sounds like Someone made a television. Yeah. You know
• 5:48
Speaker 2: what I'm saying? Out of people who shop at Hot Topic.
• 5:52
Speaker 1: Like, this is the TV for people who just want
• 5:54
Speaker 1: to watch really sort of dark and depressing shows.
• 5:57
Speaker 2: This week, Vincent Goth is available at Walmart for 50% off.
• 6:00
Speaker 2: It's a streaming channel for goth people. Anyway, don't invade us,
• 6:05
Speaker 2: I guess is what we're getting at. Please don't. No.
• 6:09
  Speaker 2: We'll invade ourselves.
• 6:10
Speaker 1: I don't want the United States to be invaded.
• 6:12
Speaker 2: Thank you. That's a really strong stance. You guys heard
• 6:17
Speaker 2: it here first. We do have people that are like,
• 6:19
Speaker 2: I wish you would. You know, there's a weird like,
• 6:23
Speaker 2: it's like a fantasy of a lot of people now
• 6:25
Speaker 2: to like, you know, I wish somebody would because I've
• 6:28
Speaker 2: been hoarding these guns for my whole life hoping that
• 6:32
Speaker 2: we can get to a weird fantasy that I have. Yeah,
• 6:35
  Speaker 2: I own guns.
• 6:36
Speaker 1: I don't want to use them.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: That's beautiful, Sean. I don't want to use them. How
• 6:40
Speaker 2: many guns do you? I inherited some guns. I have
• 6:44
Speaker 2: some of my own. Do you think they're too old
• 6:46
Speaker 2: to work properly oh.
• 6:46
Speaker 1: There's some for sure yeah there's some like dust comes
• 6:50
Speaker 1: out i found there was like i looked it up
• 6:52
Speaker 1: it was like a 1917 european you don't want.
• 6:57
Speaker 2: That little you got a musket loader it was not even.
• 6:59
Speaker 1: A 380 it was a it was like wow this
• 7:02
Speaker 1: is really old i'd be terrified but but uh to
• 7:05
Speaker 1: fire it but i had to anyway johnny yosemite sam
• 7:10
Speaker 1: i just went down the road just.
• 7:12
Speaker 2: Firing into the air You're the rootinest, tootinest, what have you. Yeah,
• 7:17
  Speaker 2: that's great, John.
• 7:18
Speaker 1: Do you think that the listeners know Yosemite Sam? You're like, yes,
• 7:22
  Speaker 1: our listeners would.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: It is interesting that we grew up in a household
• 7:29
Speaker 2: where we had limited television options because of our upbringing.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: Everything was evil and going to contribute to the delinquency
• 7:37
  Speaker 2: of their children.
• 7:38
Speaker 1: I think you had that more than I did. I
• 7:40
Speaker 1: had some of that.
• 7:40
Speaker 2: But I thought it was interesting that anything... that had
• 7:44
Speaker 2: a hint of sorcery or whatever was definitely off limits. Yeah.
• 7:47
Speaker 2: But like Looney Tunes was okay. They're dropping anvils there. Right.
• 7:52
Speaker 2: People are shooting each other in the face, but they
• 7:55
Speaker 2: were always okay. Planting explosives for you to just happen upon.
• 7:59
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:00
Speaker 2: And then it's just like, it just charge your, the
• 8:03
Speaker 2: bill of Daffy Duck, just a little bit. His bill
• 8:05
Speaker 2: is a little bit.
• 8:05
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Well that, but that's what made it funny.
• 8:08
Speaker 1: No one was ever actually hurt.
• 8:10
Speaker 2: But I, do you think it like led to a
• 8:12
Speaker 2: generation of people who were like.
• 8:13
Speaker 1: Dropping anvil bombs? I don't think that's what led to.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: It, Johnny. How many anvil-related deaths do you think there
• 8:20
Speaker 2: have been because of cartoons?
• 8:22
Speaker 1: I don't know, but I could still watch The Roadrunner
• 8:25
Speaker 1: and find it funny today.
• 8:28
Speaker 2: There was something released in meme culture about, it was
• 8:32
Speaker 2: like somebody found, or maybe it was just somebody that
• 8:35
Speaker 2: extrapolated these rules, but The Roadrunner, the creator of The Roadrunner,
• 8:39
Speaker 2: Frizz Freeling? I want to say his name is Frizz Freeling.
• 8:42
Speaker 2: he had rules about the road runner. Like there was
• 8:45
Speaker 2: a code and it was about, if I could, I
• 8:49
Speaker 2: need to look them up because I'm going to, I'm
• 8:51
Speaker 2: going to butcher it. But he had, there was rules
• 8:52
Speaker 2: about like the, the coyote. See if you can find it.
• 8:59
Speaker 2: See if I'm right about for his feelings. Say what
• 9:01
Speaker 2: you think it is. It was something about he, the
• 9:07
Speaker 2: coyote can never die. Obviously we knew that, uh, But
• 9:12
Speaker 2: it was somebody that posted the five rules, the top
• 9:14
Speaker 2: five rules, that when you write an episode of The Roadrunner,
• 9:18
Speaker 2: this is what has to be included in it. There's
• 9:23
Speaker 2: a code of the road, as it were. Chad is thinking.
• 9:27
Speaker 2: Is it? Followed by Chuck Jones. Chuck Jones. Okay, so
• 9:31
Speaker 2: I don't know where I'm Frizz Freeling. Frizz Freeling was
• 9:33
Speaker 2: a different creator, a different cartoonist, I guess. He later
• 9:35
Speaker 2: shared them as a set of internal creative guidelines. Number one.
• 9:39
Speaker 2: This is when he was being paid $ 20, 000 an hour
• 9:40
Speaker 2: on the lecture circuit. Oh, let's tell you. Everything I
• 9:43
Speaker 2: learned about life, I learned.
• 9:44
  Speaker 1: From the Roadrunner.
• 9:45
Speaker 2: The Roadrunner's Guide to Business Success. He paid all this
• 9:49
Speaker 2: money by corporate executives. They're writing it all down. These
• 9:51
Speaker 2: are fascinating to me because it is a long time.
• 9:54
Speaker 2: So I'm not wrong. This is the thing.
• 9:55
Speaker 1: You're correct. Well, what it has said was.
• 9:58
Speaker 2: Oh, boy. They weren't officially published.
• 10:01
Speaker 1: Later shared them as a set of internal creative guidelines
• 10:03
Speaker 1: that his team followed to maintain consistently humor and originality
• 10:06
Speaker 1: in the series. Because think about it. I mean, from
• 10:09
Speaker 1: a comedy perspective, this guy did one thing over and
• 10:13
Speaker 1: over and over again in different ways. They rarely inserted
• 10:16
Speaker 1: another character. They just did this one thing well. Kind
• 10:20
Speaker 1: of like our podcast.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: It's a lot. Which one of us do you think
• 10:23
Speaker 2: is the coyote and which one do you think is...
• 10:26
Speaker 2: I'm definitely the roadrunner. Really?
• 10:28
Speaker 1: I'll always get away.
• 10:28
Speaker 2: And I'm buying poorly made acne products.
• 10:32
Speaker 1: You drop comedic anvils on my head every week.
• 10:35
Speaker 2: But you come back. You regenerate. I always come back.
• 10:37
Speaker 2: Every time. Number one, the Roadrunner cannot harm the coyote
• 10:40
  Speaker 2: except by.
• 10:40
Speaker 1: Going beep beep. Okay?
• 10:43
Speaker 2: You think about it. He never does anything to him.
• 10:45
Speaker 2: He doesn't have an offensive move. He's always playing. Which, guys,
• 10:47
Speaker 2: isn't that just like?
• 10:47
  Speaker 1: I mean, some of y'all... I thought.
• 10:49
Speaker 2: It was meep meep.
• 10:50
Speaker 1: It says beep meep.
• 10:51
Speaker 2: Beep meep? Beep meep?
• 10:52
Speaker 1: It just says beep beep.
• 10:54
  Speaker 2: Oh, beep beep. But... He's not a robot. I can't
• 10:57
Speaker 2: help it. I thought it was meat meat.
• 10:59
Speaker 1: No, number two, no outside force can harm the coyote.
• 11:02
Speaker 1: Only his own ineptitude or the failure of acne products.
• 11:05
Speaker 2: That was a good one. That was a good one.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: I thought, yeah, that is true. And you don't think
• 11:08
Speaker 2: about it until you get the rule revealed to you.
• 11:10
Speaker 2: You go, wow, that's true.
• 11:12
Speaker 1: He never, he never.
• 11:14
Speaker 2: He's his own worst enemy because he can't, his taste
• 11:17
Speaker 2: for his thirst for, for Roadrunner blood. He's gotten his
• 11:21
  Speaker 2: own way.
• 11:22
Speaker 1: I mean, it would have been like one bite. The
• 11:24
Speaker 1: roadrunner was hardly, it was a very skinny bird.
• 11:25
Speaker 2: Yeah, he's very bony. Yeah.
• 11:27
Speaker 1: Number three, the coyote could stop anytime if he were
• 11:29
  Speaker 1: not a fanatic. I mean, he's his own, he's pushed
• 11:34
Speaker 1: forward by his own fanaticism.
• 11:35
  Speaker 2: Won't that?
• 11:36
Speaker 1: Come on, guys. There's no dialogue ever except beep beep.
• 11:41
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 11:42
Speaker 1: Or in your case, meet beep, or meet meep. The
• 11:44
Speaker 1: roadrunner must stay on the road, otherwise he's not a roadrunner.
• 11:48
Speaker 1: I thought he went to the desert sometimes and stuff.
• 11:50
Speaker 2: Well, but he's... Interesting.
• 11:53
Speaker 1: Was he always on the road?
• 11:54
Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess he was. What about when he came
• 11:56
Speaker 2: to a cliff? But that was a cliff that was
• 11:59
Speaker 2: painted there by the coyote. It looked like a cliff,
• 12:02
Speaker 2: but it wasn't. He would just go right on through it.
• 12:03
Speaker 1: That was so amazing.
• 12:04
Speaker 2: The train, the tunnel, the train.
• 12:06
  Speaker 1: Number five.
• 12:06
  Speaker 2: Sorry, number six.
• 12:07
Speaker 1: All action must be confined to the natural environment of
• 12:09
Speaker 1: the two characters, the Southwest American Desert.
• 12:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, so they could just put him in a city
• 12:13
Speaker 2: or something. Hey, and now he's working in an office. Yeah. Nope,
• 12:17
  Speaker 2: that never happened.
• 12:17
Speaker 1: Number seven, all materials, tools, weapons, or mechanical conveniences must
• 12:20
Speaker 1: be obtained from Acme Corporation.
• 12:23
Speaker 2: I wonder, that's the earliest partnership deal in the history of.
• 12:27
Speaker 1: Oh, I bet. Yeah. Yeah, there's no doubt. Well, there's
• 12:30
Speaker 1: a little doubt. Number eight, whenever possible, make gravity the
• 12:33
  Speaker 1: coyote's greatest enemy.
• 12:34
Speaker 2: Yeah. And that is funny.
• 12:36
Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
• 12:38
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 12:38
Speaker 1: I agree with that.
• 12:38
Speaker 2: Because he would like realize I'm in midair. I'm about
• 12:41
Speaker 2: to fall. He kind of looks at the camera. Yeah.
• 12:46
Speaker 2: Or sometimes they can even make their way back to safety.
• 12:50
Speaker 1: Yeah. Because they realized it. And then wherever they think
• 12:52
Speaker 1: safety is, is actually not. And then the edge of
• 12:54
Speaker 1: the cliff falls or whatever. You know what I'm saying?
• 12:56
Speaker 2: I always like that where you think.
• 12:57
  Speaker 1: Oh, he survived.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. He did not survive, John. Well, he survived,
• 13:01
  Speaker 2: but he didn't.
• 13:01
Speaker 1: And then number nine, the coyote is always more humiliated
• 13:04
Speaker 1: than harmed by his failures.
• 13:06
Speaker 2: More humiliated than harmed.
• 13:07
Speaker 1: Guys, I'm telling you, I think.
• 13:09
Speaker 2: There's something to it.
• 13:10
Speaker 1: We could live a lot of life by this. Come on,
• 13:12
Speaker 1: some of y'all have been feeling more humiliated. But if
• 13:15
Speaker 1: you're not harmed, you just keep going, man. Keep chasing
• 13:18
  Speaker 1: your dreams.
• 13:18
Speaker 2: I just want to say that Frizz Freeling was an
• 13:21
Speaker 2: American animator. He was known for working on Looney Tunes
• 13:24
Speaker 2: cartoons and Merry Melodies. So Fritz Freeling was a thing.
• 13:27
Speaker 2: He did Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite, Sam.
• 13:30
Speaker 2: So he was not Roadrunner. I thought that was a...
• 13:34
Speaker 2: But Fritz Freeling was a... He did The Voice? No,
• 13:36
Speaker 2: he was the animator. Oh, okay. Because The Voice was...
• 13:39
Speaker 2: He would be in the credits. I just remember those
• 13:40
Speaker 2: names in the credits because you see them so much
• 13:42
  Speaker 2: when you're a kid. I just got... I was the
• 13:44
Speaker 2: kind of kid that locked in all this stupid stuff.
• 13:47
Speaker 2: I would remember Sit, Ubu, Sit, Good Dog. I would
• 13:49
Speaker 2: remember all the weird... I don't know why, but those
• 13:53
Speaker 2: lock into my head. Oh, I did too.
• 13:54
Speaker 1: Like those things were a part of the experience.
• 13:58
Speaker 2: Like a part of the show. Yeah. I didn't want
• 14:00
Speaker 2: to miss that. Yeah. They're very much, they're cues.
• 14:04
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 14:04
  Speaker 2: Right?
• 14:04
Speaker 1: They cue you that this has started, this has ended,
• 14:07
Speaker 1: and it's not the same.
• 14:09
Speaker 2: I think it's why the Marvel movies are so fascinating.
• 14:11
Speaker 2: They know that you're going to sit through like 10,
• 14:13
Speaker 2: 10,000 people worked on this movie because they're so complicated,
• 14:17
Speaker 2: but they know that we're trained not to sit through
• 14:19
Speaker 2: that anymore. So they go, We're going to have to
• 14:21
Speaker 2: put an extra scene in here. Yeah. To give these
• 14:23
Speaker 2: people the credit they deserve. We have to hide another
• 14:27
Speaker 2: like 10 minutes of the movie. Or at least three
• 14:29
Speaker 2: minutes of the movie. We got to hide it in there.
• 14:32
Speaker 2: Because otherwise, this guy who worked on this thing for
• 14:34
Speaker 2: six months, he's not going to get credit. You'll never know.
• 14:37
Speaker 2: But in the old days, it was just like, yeah,
• 14:39
Speaker 2: we're going to sit through. Because they said, sit, Ubu, sit,
• 14:41
Speaker 2: good dog. And we're like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know. Well,
• 14:43
Speaker 2: you couldn't fast forward. Right. Right. You couldn't pause. That's
• 14:47
Speaker 2: one thing Sadie will never know is... Going quickly to
• 14:52
Speaker 2: the bathroom and having to get back and jumping over
• 14:54
Speaker 2: the couch because you might miss something. She'll never be
• 14:59
Speaker 2: in danger of missing something. I mean, she's in danger
• 15:01
Speaker 2: of missing her life because she's looking at her phone
• 15:03
Speaker 2: all the time. But what I'm saying is her favorite
• 15:06
Speaker 2: shows are on demand, basically. Unless she goes to a
• 15:10
Speaker 2: live event. Y'all did the Taylor Swift thing where you
• 15:13
Speaker 2: waited in the rain and all that. That was kind
• 15:15
Speaker 2: of the closest thing. But that was every week with us,
• 15:17
Speaker 2: the Dukes of Hazzard. They're in midair. We don't know
• 15:20
Speaker 2: what's going to happen to the Duke boys. We got
• 15:21
Speaker 2: to get back. Yeah.
• 15:23
  Speaker 1: Interesting.
• 15:23
Speaker 2: Did they have back then? They did like.
• 15:28
Speaker 1: Last time on the Dukes of Hazzard.
• 15:30
Speaker 2: Oh, sure. Yeah. Because could you remember everything? And then
• 15:33
Speaker 2: you knew it was like, oh, it's a rerun. Because
• 15:35
Speaker 2: it's summertime. You're like, now they're in reruns.
• 15:37
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 15:38
Speaker 2: But I missed it the first time. So I was
• 15:39
Speaker 2: glad for the reruns sometimes.
• 15:40
  Speaker 1: Absolutely.
• 15:41
Speaker 2: Yeah. It's a weird time to be alive, John. It is.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: You know what else, John? What's that? I have no
• 15:47
Speaker 2: idea where this is going. We were talking about partnerships,
• 15:49
Speaker 2: and the earliest partnership would have been the Acme Corporation.
• 15:53
Speaker 2: We're not sponsored by Acme, but we do have our
• 15:55
Speaker 2: fine sponsors that we are so glad are here. And
• 15:58
Speaker 2: let's take a minute and hear a word from just
• 15:59
Speaker 2: a few of them, if we could.
• 16:09
Speaker 1: I think you need to write a series of not-sponsored-bys
• 16:14
Speaker 1: that are Acme now. That'd be a great exercise. Guys,
• 16:18
Speaker 1: if you don't, wherever you listen to your podcast, if
• 16:20
Speaker 1: you don't read the descriptions every time.
• 16:24
Speaker 2: They're in the audio version, though. They're in the pre-show.
• 16:26
Speaker 2: That's true. We read it at the beginning now. We
• 16:27
Speaker 2: read it at the beginning, yeah. Johnny's not sponsored by,
• 16:29
Speaker 2: it's pretty legendary. Not sponsored. I'm thinking about adding those
• 16:31
Speaker 2: to the live shows.
• 16:32
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 16:33
Speaker 2: Like have a section of the show be, have a sponsor.
• 16:36
Speaker 2: Because you have what? You have 300. Go get like
• 16:37
Speaker 2: a drink of water and like roll a commercial. Sorry, guys.
• 16:40
Speaker 2: We have to do this. Yeah. I'm sorry. I hate
• 16:43
Speaker 2: comics that sell out, but when they told me how
• 16:45
Speaker 2: much money I took the money. And I have ads
• 16:49
Speaker 2: in the show. I like it. That could be fun.
• 16:50
Speaker 2: Not sponsored by. Yeah. I like a meta kind of show,
• 16:54
Speaker 2: but it's weird. I don't know if all my fans
• 16:56
Speaker 2: would go with me because I feel like some of
• 16:57
Speaker 2: my comedy clips that have gone viral are more broad
• 17:00
Speaker 2: and they're more whatever. But the things that make me
• 17:02
Speaker 2: laugh are very specific. And so it's like if you
• 17:06
Speaker 2: do a show that's only that stuff, you have a
• 17:08
Speaker 2: very specific audience. But I like taking my audience by
• 17:11
Speaker 2: the hand and being like, Hey, if you like that
• 17:13
Speaker 2: thing that I made you laugh and it's very broad,
• 17:15
Speaker 2: what about this weird thing that also makes me laugh?
• 17:17
Speaker 2: Would you laugh at this too? And then seeing if
• 17:20
Speaker 2: it'll work. I like stuff like that.
• 17:22
Speaker 1: You know what I like is the people who email
• 17:24
Speaker 1: us for the podcast. They almost always drop two or
• 17:27
Speaker 1: three of the inside things in it.
• 17:30
Speaker 2: I just like the thing of challenging. Because that's what
• 17:33
Speaker 2: comedians like. We want to make people laugh, but we
• 17:36
Speaker 2: also want to challenge our audience because it's what makes
• 17:40
Speaker 2: us feel alive. It's like when Jim Carrey could have
• 17:44
Speaker 2: just gone and done Ace Ventura 10 times in a row.
• 17:46
Speaker 2: But he was like, I want to do the cable guy.
• 17:47
Speaker 2: It's this really dark thing. And I want to get
• 17:50
Speaker 2: into drama. I eventually want to do the Truman Show.
• 17:53
Speaker 2: I want to be Robin Williams, basically. I want to
• 17:55
Speaker 2: do the Robin Williams career arc of like, I want
• 17:56
Speaker 2: to see if I can do Dead Poets Society. But
• 17:59
Speaker 2: I have to do the weird, dark comedy first. And
• 18:03
Speaker 2: a lot of his audience were like, no, a resounding no.
• 18:06
Speaker 2: And now that movie really has aged a lot better.
• 18:09
Speaker 2: Cause it was actually a really brilliant piece of film.
• 18:11
Speaker 2: Cause he was talking about the insidiousness of television growing up.
• 18:14
Speaker 2: This guy was addicted to television. So it's like, there's
• 18:17
Speaker 2: so much like prescient stuff there, but he kind of
• 18:20
Speaker 2: had to hold his audience's hand and be like, I'm
• 18:22
Speaker 2: not going to do the rubber face, zany Jim Carrey
• 18:24
Speaker 2: thing my whole career. I can't do it. I will die. Right.
• 18:27
Speaker 2: But he had to like tease his audience. Like, please,
• 18:30
Speaker 2: please go with me a little bit on this.
• 18:32
Speaker 1: Where was liar, liar in the middle of that?
• 18:34
Speaker 2: It was near there. I think it was before cable
• 18:37
Speaker 2: guy was like before I think. And, He's Ace Ventura,
• 18:40
Speaker 2: Ace Ventura 2, The Mask. Well, The Mask was actually
• 18:42
Speaker 2: filmed before Ace Ventura, but it was released after. Then
• 18:46
Speaker 2: he did Ace Ventura 2, Batman he did, where he
• 18:50
  Speaker 2: was the Riddler.
• 18:50
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 18:52
Speaker 2: Liar, Liar. And then somewhere along the line, he was like,
• 18:56
Speaker 2: he did Cable Guy, which was like, which was Ben
• 18:58
Speaker 2: Stiller directed, I think. And it was one of those, like,
• 19:01
Speaker 2: people were like, this isn't wacky. This is just kind
• 19:06
  Speaker 2: of weird.
• 19:07
Speaker 1: When did he do.
• 19:09
Speaker 1: What was the other one I was just thinking of?
• 19:12
Speaker 2: Probably the best movie he ever did was Eternal Sunshine
• 19:14
Speaker 2: of the Spotless Mind. He was fully in his dramatic arc.
• 19:19
Speaker 2: It's a really well done... It's got elements of time travel,
• 19:23
Speaker 2: but it's a drama. But it's also got some comedic elements. Oh,
• 19:26
Speaker 2: Bruce Almighty. Bruce Almighty's great. That's kind of the perfect blend.
• 19:31
Speaker 2: Because it's a great script. He got to really do
• 19:34
Speaker 2: some acting in it that was real. He had a
• 19:37
Speaker 2: good co-star. But he got to be silly, too.
• 19:40
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 19:40
Speaker 2: You had Morgan Freeman playing God. I mean, that's a
• 19:42
  Speaker 2: great concept.
• 19:43
Speaker 1: I really thought that movie, when it came out, was
• 19:48
Speaker 1: going to... Hear me, audience. But just the idea of it...
• 19:52
Speaker 1: I remember watching the trailer and being like, oh my gosh,
• 19:55
Speaker 1: this is the most sacrilegious thing ever. But.
• 20:00
Speaker 1: And it is, it's not, it's not meant to be theology.
• 20:02
Speaker 2: Right. Right. I mean, I think we could be okay
• 20:04
  Speaker 2: with that.
• 20:04
Speaker 1: Like this is not meant to be, this is like
• 20:06
Speaker 1: someone created an alternate universe in which this thing happens.
• 20:08
Speaker 1: It's not like, don't take any real cues about who
• 20:11
Speaker 1: God is from it.
• 20:11
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 20:12
Speaker 1: But I will say some of the parts of it
• 20:17
Speaker 1: that they revealed about, basically the point of it is,
• 20:20
Speaker 1: is actually you couldn't be God.
• 20:22
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 20:22
Speaker 1: And you don't understand all that God is actually doing.
• 20:25
  Speaker 1: There's a mystery to it, which I thought was, there's
• 20:28
Speaker 1: a lot of kind of just moments in it yeah
• 20:30
  Speaker 1: you know.
• 20:31
  Speaker 2: When i love that it doesn't isn't there a scene
• 20:33
Speaker 2: where uh he meets god and morgan freeman's like holding
• 20:37
Speaker 2: a mop yeah like he's basically mopping oh yeah and
• 20:40
Speaker 2: almost all the scenes he's doing he's so expecting some
• 20:43
Speaker 2: guy on a throne right that's gonna be like wielding
• 20:46
Speaker 2: you know this arrogant all-powerful being right instead it's just
• 20:49
Speaker 2: this guy that looks like the janitor yeah and you
• 20:51
Speaker 2: just go you never see it yeah yeah of course
• 20:53
Speaker 2: that's what i'm saying is i'm just trying to remember
• 20:54
Speaker 2: that scene specifically i remember being struck by that scene.
• 20:57
Speaker 1: Well he's a homeless guy too yeah at one point
• 20:58
Speaker 1: yeah um yeah it's.
• 21:01
Speaker 2: Very yeah Not a sponsor, Brisbane. No, I'm not saying again, guys.
• 21:05
Speaker 1: Don't pattern your life after it or anything.
• 21:08
Speaker 2: It's too late. It is way too late. About that time, Johnny. Oh, wow, okay.
• 21:12
Speaker 2: It's my segment. We call it They Talked About That.
• 21:18
Speaker 2: See if I can do it. Just take one ear off, maybe.
• 21:26
  Speaker 2: That's a tough one. Yeah.
• 21:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, a little pitchy dog.
• 21:33
  Speaker 2: C.S.
• 21:33
  Speaker 1: Lewis today.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: Johnny, it's always time. Always time for C.S.
• 21:38
  Speaker 1: Lewis.
• 21:38
Speaker 2: It's been a while since we had a little Clive
• 21:39
Speaker 2: Staples Lewis up in here.
• 21:42
Speaker 1: He says, humility after the first shock is a cheerful virtue.
• 21:47
Speaker 1: It is the high-minded unbeliever desperately trying in the teeth
• 21:51
Speaker 1: of repeated disillusions to retain his, quote, faith in nature
• 21:56
Speaker 1: who is, sorry, faith in human nature who is really sad.
• 21:59
Speaker 1: Let's read that again. Humility after the first shock is
• 22:02
Speaker 1: a cheerful virtue. It is the high-minded unbeliever desperately trying
• 22:06
Speaker 1: in the teeth of repeated disillusions to retain his faith
• 22:09
Speaker 1: in human nature who is really sad.
• 22:12
Speaker 2: It's interesting, and that kind of goes hand-in-hand with this
• 22:13
Speaker 2: idea of God being the janitor and the homeless person.
• 22:18
Speaker 2: This idea of what we expect true humility to be. Yeah,
• 22:24
  Speaker 2: it's very....
• 22:28
Speaker 1: This idea of how people make sense of the world
• 22:33
Speaker 1: and of difficulty. I think how much I preach now
• 22:37
Speaker 1: on trouble. Maybe my whole life I have, but somewhere
• 22:42
Speaker 1: in my mid-30s, I think I began to realize that
• 22:44
Speaker 1: really the thing people are coming to church disillusioned about
• 22:47
Speaker 1: is trouble. And that theology, however we came to it
• 22:52
Speaker 1: or through it or are coming to it, generally deals
• 22:56
Speaker 1: with our viewpoint of how God does trouble. I recently had,
• 23:00
Speaker 1: I know my grandfather, my grandfather was a faith healing preacher,
• 23:04
Speaker 1: you know, for, for his whole life. And when my
• 23:07
Speaker 1: dad died before him, he had a legitimate crisis of faith. Sure.
• 23:13
  Speaker 1: I mean, a legitimate, I mean, like it's so weird
• 23:16
Speaker 1: being the younger two generations down, trying to comfort him
• 23:20
Speaker 1: with like, Hey, Papa, you know, Just because dad died
• 23:25
Speaker 1: doesn't mean that your faith wasn't enough. Because in his mind,
• 23:29
Speaker 1: and he had many other things about God. He believed
• 23:32
Speaker 1: in his relationship with God.
• 23:33
Speaker 2: I'm saying on that front. It's a formula. Right.
• 23:35
Speaker 1: This trouble. And he had seen actual healings in his life.
• 23:39
Speaker 1: He'd seen real miracles. And so the idea of what
• 23:45
Speaker 1: that means about God, like what do I standardize about
• 23:49
Speaker 1: God in my mind? What can I expect from God?
• 23:52
Speaker 1: whenever you've seen God do something. And I think that
• 23:54
Speaker 1: even happened during Jesus's day because he fed the 5,000
• 23:57
Speaker 1: and it's such an interesting part of the, of the
• 24:00
Speaker 1: new Testament narrative. He feeds the 5,000 and now the
• 24:04
Speaker 1: people are just hounding him. They're following him everywhere he goes.
• 24:08
Speaker 1: And he turns to them and he says, eat my
• 24:12
Speaker 1: flesh and drink my blood. I mean, he's talking to
• 24:14
Speaker 1: the Pharisees before that too, but he basically starts saying
• 24:17
Speaker 1: really difficult things to them. And he's like, you're following
• 24:19
Speaker 1: me because you want it. You want bread, right? You
• 24:22
Speaker 1: want me to do more of the thing I did. Like,
• 24:25
Speaker 1: and I think that you can't blame them for some extent,
• 24:27
Speaker 1: because how do they not know?
• 24:29
Speaker 2: Oh, that's what Jesus does. Right.
• 24:33
Speaker 1: That repeating expectation of who God is or what I do,
• 24:37
Speaker 1: how God's going to interact with me when it comes
• 24:40
Speaker 1: to problems or trouble or difficulties. Can I count on
• 24:43
Speaker 1: God to stop problems, troubles and difficulties? Maybe not all
• 24:47
Speaker 1: of them, but what kind can I count on?
• 24:50
  Speaker 2: And that's when a real.
• 24:51
Speaker 1: Crisis of faith for me in the last couple of
• 24:52
Speaker 1: years is when things happen that I specifically prayed hard
• 24:58
Speaker 1: repeatedly about, please don't let this happen. Not like I
• 25:02
Speaker 1: got old or something like a thing that is, it
• 25:05
Speaker 1: doesn't have to happen. And when it does, I'm like,
• 25:08
Speaker 1: what was all that prayer about? Like, you know, I mean,
• 25:11
Speaker 1: cause how many times can I tell you have answered
• 25:12
  Speaker 1: my prayer and I don't, I don't understand. So I
• 25:15
Speaker 1: think like CS Lewis is dealing with the people who
• 25:18
Speaker 1: were all grappling with with whether or not we should
• 25:21
Speaker 1: put our faith in human nature, put our faith in
• 25:25
Speaker 1: no faith, meaning like, oh, it's just, there's no meaning,
• 25:28
Speaker 1: there's no point of praying, there's no point of asking,
• 25:30
Speaker 1: no point of trying to avoiding, just live your life
• 25:32
Speaker 1: because it's just going to happen as it is. Or
• 25:37
Speaker 1: those who become humble. And a humility here is not just,
• 25:41
  Speaker 1: I think, a state of, he's not referencing just a
• 25:43
Speaker 1: state of someone who appears to not be prideful, right?
• 25:46
Speaker 1: True humility is saying, I recognize I'm not in charge.
• 25:51
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 25:52
Speaker 1: I'm not going to figure it all out that I
• 25:56
Speaker 1: serve someone who is so eternally good to me. Yet
• 26:00
Speaker 1: there will be things he allows that I will not
• 26:03
Speaker 1: understand that will feel horrible.
• 26:08
Speaker 2: And it kind of humbled myself enough to go.
• 26:10
Speaker 1: And even I don't like this, even the whole idea
• 26:12
Speaker 1: of like, well, All things work together for good. Someday
• 26:16
Speaker 1: you'll know because that disaster was actually for your good.
• 26:20
  Speaker 2: You just don't know how yet. I don't think that's
• 26:22
  Speaker 2: good theology.
• 26:23
Speaker 1: I think that when all things work together for good,
• 26:25
Speaker 1: it's really talking about the end of this age. I
• 26:30
Speaker 1: think there are things that happen that are just tragic.
• 26:33
Speaker 1: The worst thing you can ever do is, and I've
• 26:35
Speaker 1: been to funerals of children or I've been in, God, man,
• 26:38
Speaker 1: I went to a hospice one time for a kid
• 26:42
Speaker 1: who was about my kid's age at the time.
• 26:44
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 26:44
Speaker 1: And I watched a dad laying up in the bed
• 26:50
Speaker 1: holding his daughter. And it wrecked me on another level.
• 26:55
Speaker 1: It was like watching myself. And the worst thing I
• 26:58
Speaker 1: could have done has been like, now look, I don't
• 27:00
Speaker 1: know what God's plan is, but he's going to take care.
• 27:03
Speaker 1: I don't remember saying anything like that except that, man,
• 27:06
Speaker 1: we love you and we're so sorry and we're praying
• 27:09
Speaker 1: and anything we can do. I mean, there's nothing else
• 27:11
Speaker 1: to give there that should be platitude based. because you
• 27:14
  Speaker 1: really don't know. Humility says, I don't know, but I
• 27:18
Speaker 1: can say what's good and what's bad. I can say
• 27:20
Speaker 1: what the fact that in some ways the redemptive part
• 27:24
Speaker 1: of the gospel is accepting that the world is not
• 27:27
Speaker 1: as it should be. That's why I need a redeemer.
• 27:30
Speaker 1: And that's why I see this gospel story is larger
• 27:34
Speaker 1: than just what good or what bad happens to me
• 27:37
Speaker 1: and my family today. Now, that being said, I shouldn't
• 27:39
Speaker 1: minimize that because I, they can destroy our lives, right?
• 27:44
Speaker 2: This, this world destroys us.
• 27:46
Speaker 1: And so it's just interesting for him to say, Hey,
• 27:48
Speaker 1: you know, I think I'd rather not be repeatedly disillusioned
• 27:51
Speaker 1: and constantly trying to make some, I would say not
• 27:54
Speaker 1: just faith in human nature, but faith in healing or
• 27:57
Speaker 1: faith in whatever, even if it's related to religion. Um,
• 28:01
Speaker 1: I think to go at some point to come to
• 28:03
Speaker 1: a place where you trust the sovereignty of God or
• 28:05
Speaker 1: you trust that God, I don't like this. I'm mad
• 28:07
Speaker 1: at you about this yet. I will still serve you. Um,
• 28:11
Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm there all the time, but
• 28:12
Speaker 1: that's where I think I want to be. Jesus in
• 28:15
Speaker 1: the garden. Take this from me. Not my will. Your
• 28:17
Speaker 1: will be done is a tough thing to pray in
• 28:19
Speaker 1: a tough place to be.
• 28:20
Speaker 2: So, yeah, you're definitely not there. And I wanted to
• 28:23
  Speaker 2: talk about it.
• 28:24
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 28:24
Speaker 2: Um, you got along with it. I think I do, Johnny. Yeah. No,
• 28:29
Speaker 2: there is something about like humility to me is like
• 28:31
  Speaker 2: knowing you're in a, you're a part of a system.
• 28:36
Speaker 2: You're not the center of the system, you know, like
• 28:39
  Speaker 2: there's a, isn't there a, scripture where he talks about don't,
• 28:42
Speaker 2: when you go into a room, don't sit at the
• 28:44
Speaker 2: head of the table because the person who belongs at
• 28:46
Speaker 2: the head of the table might come in and see
• 28:48
Speaker 2: you at the head of the table. I think my
• 28:50
Speaker 2: tendency and where I go wrong a lot of my
• 28:53
Speaker 2: life is I'm sitting at the head of the table,
• 28:56
Speaker 2: you know, and I'm not, I'm not realizing it. I'm
• 28:58
Speaker 2: just like, well, I'm the, I'm the charter of the,
• 29:01
Speaker 2: I'm the captain of this ship. Right. And it's like,
• 29:03
Speaker 2: if you really believe that you're already in the wrong,
• 29:05
Speaker 2: you're in the wrong seat. Interesting.
• 29:07
Speaker 1: You know, I want to write a book, maybe, or
• 29:10
Speaker 1: at least a chapter about modern main character energy.
• 29:15
Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, that's a big one now, because you probably
• 29:17
Speaker 2: hear Sadie talk about it at school. That's a big, like,
• 29:19
  Speaker 2: you're a non-playable character. This guy's got main character energy.
• 29:24
Speaker 1: And it's like, that's really our biggest problem, is we
• 29:25
Speaker 1: got main character energy. It is tormenting, because we're not
• 29:29
Speaker 1: made to be main characters.
• 29:29
Speaker 2: And main characters... they often do not work and play
• 29:35
Speaker 2: well with others. And we, we make heroes of those people.
• 29:37
Speaker 2: We talked about this at lunch today about like, we
• 29:39
Speaker 2: watched a video from this contributor on Facebook that we
• 29:43
Speaker 2: both love. And he was saying, one of the reasons
• 29:46
Speaker 2: we're kind of in this jam that we're in the
• 29:48
Speaker 2: last 20 years politically and, and just in the country
• 29:51
Speaker 2: is we love movies about vigilantes. Yeah. Who the world
• 29:56
Speaker 2: is chaos. And so they've got to, they got to
• 29:59
Speaker 2: make things right, but they can do it outside the rules. Mm-hmm.
• 30:03
Speaker 2: And we've made those guys heroes. And so, but in
• 30:07
Speaker 2: real life, that's super disruptive.
• 30:09
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 30:10
Speaker 2: You know, like a billionaire just being like, I'll take
• 30:13
Speaker 2: the law into my own hands. Like, that's not great
• 30:15
Speaker 2: for society at large. It's great. in a Batman movie. Right.
• 30:19
Speaker 2: But we're seeing it play out and we're just like,
• 30:21
Speaker 2: we're just kind of watching it. Like, why does part
• 30:23
Speaker 2: of me like romanticize this? And part of me is
• 30:25
Speaker 2: terrified by it. Well, you're conditioned. Yeah.
• 30:28
Speaker 1: I mean, every hero movie, every vigilante movie, every one
• 30:31
Speaker 1: of it. I mean, and it's not the same as
• 30:35
Speaker 1: an oppressed people group.
• 30:36
Speaker 2: Yeah. In the 1960s. Yeah.
• 30:38
Speaker 1: And a Martin Luther King speaking truth of power in
• 30:41
Speaker 1: a moment, you know, peacefully with nothing to gain except liberty.
• 30:46
Speaker 2: But you're right. The main character energy thing is like
• 30:48
Speaker 2: such a funny. It's like we've made that a good thing.
• 30:54
Speaker 2: But we also have like destroyed the idea of like
• 30:57
Speaker 2: collectivism being a good thing. Like collectivism immediately gets lumped
• 31:01
Speaker 2: in with socialism. Right. Like being a part of a
• 31:04
Speaker 2: collective that supports each other. It feels like weakness to
• 31:07
Speaker 2: a lot of people now because you don't have main
• 31:09
Speaker 2: character energy. If you can't just white knuckle it and
• 31:12
Speaker 2: get through, what are you going to get help? Right.
• 31:15
Speaker 2: We only go to therapy to weaponize therapy talk now.
• 31:17
Speaker 2: That's really where we go. So we go, who do
• 31:19
  Speaker 2: I blame?
• 31:20
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 31:20
Speaker 2: Who's responsible for this? So we can point it outward.
• 31:23
Speaker 2: We don't go to get better, really. No.
• 31:26
Speaker 1: And when I was able in therapy to come to
• 31:29
Speaker 1: the conclusion that you were to blame.
• 31:31
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 31:31
Speaker 1: I mean, for all of us. I couldn't believe it.
• 31:33
Speaker 1: It went back to my childhood.
• 31:34
Speaker 2: They were like, do you know Johnny?
• 31:35
Speaker 1: I was like, I didn't even know Johnny back then.
• 31:37
Speaker 2: How did this work? It really did simplify things. I'm
• 31:41
Speaker 2: so glad that we found it. We figured it out.
• 31:43
Speaker 1: Yeah, we got it.
• 31:43
Speaker 2: That didn't take long at all. John, let's do my segments.
• 31:46
Speaker 2: Let's start with Johnny's old jokes. We call it Joke
• 31:48
Speaker 2: About That. John, I was driving down the road in
• 31:57
Speaker 2: this joke. Saw a hitchhiker. Being in a generous mood,
• 32:00
Speaker 2: I decided I'd give him a ride. Picked him up
• 32:02
Speaker 2: and we started down the road. He was very thankful,
• 32:04
Speaker 2: but said, you aren't scared that I could be a
• 32:06
Speaker 2: serial killer or something? So I chuckled, looked at him
• 32:08
Speaker 2: and said, the chances that we're both serial killers is
• 32:11
Speaker 2: probably pretty low, don't you think? It's got a new
• 32:15
Speaker 2: little comeback for the next time I pick up a hitchhiker.
• 32:17
Speaker 2: I like that. John, a woman wakes up on her
• 32:20
Speaker 2: birthday and says to her husband, honey, I had a
• 32:21
Speaker 2: dream last night that you gave me a diamond necklace
• 32:24
Speaker 2: for my birthday. What do you think it means? Her
• 32:27
Speaker 2: husband smiles and says, maybe tonight you'll find out. Later
• 32:30
Speaker 2: that night, A couple go out to a nice show,
• 32:32
Speaker 2: have dinner at their special place. At the end of
• 32:34
Speaker 2: the meal, the husband takes out a small gift wrap box,
• 32:36
Speaker 2: hands it to his wife, and says, Happy birthday, honey.
• 32:39
Speaker 2: The wife opens the box, and inside is a book titled,
• 32:41
Speaker 2: How to Interpret Your Dreams. And they later got divorced.
• 32:47
Speaker 2: That's the hook of the She Became Bitter. John, finally,
• 32:51
Speaker 2: an old preacher, renowned scholar, a rich businessman, and a
• 32:55
Speaker 2: young boy were riding on a small plane. The engine fails,
• 32:59
Speaker 2: as it does in these kind of jokes. The pilot
• 33:01
Speaker 2: tells the passengers, we're going down, but we only have
• 33:03
Speaker 2: four parachutes. One of us will have to stay, but
• 33:05
Speaker 2: it ain't going to be me. He grabs a parachute
• 33:07
Speaker 2: and jumps. The scholar gets out of his seat and says,
• 33:10
Speaker 2: I'm too smart to die. He also grabs a parachute
• 33:13
Speaker 2: and jumps. Once the businessman sees this, he says, I'm
• 33:15
Speaker 2: too rich to die. He grabs the third parachute and jumps.
• 33:18
Speaker 2: The preacher looks at the young boy and says, I've
• 33:20
Speaker 2: lived a long life, but you're still young. This is
• 33:22
Speaker 2: you in the story. You would be the preacher. You're
• 33:25
Speaker 2: still young. Take the last parachute and live. The boy responds,
• 33:30
Speaker 2: thank you, sir. That's very kind of you, but we
• 33:31
Speaker 2: can both survive. Confused, the preacher asks, what do you mean?
• 33:34
Speaker 2: We only have one parachute left. To which the boy responds,
• 33:37
Speaker 2: before the scholar jumped, he grabbed my backpack.
• 33:42
  Speaker 1: Come on, guys.
• 33:43
Speaker 2: Come on now. Won't that? It probably won't. But John's
• 33:46
Speaker 2: going to use it. I feel more like the scholar.
• 33:48
Speaker 2: That feels like John's going to be using that. That's
• 33:50
Speaker 2: one of those like. And now turn in your Bibles.
• 33:53
Speaker 2: Feels like a very pre-sermon. You know, I was thinking
• 33:55
Speaker 2: the other day. You know, I hardly have any. You know,
• 33:57
Speaker 2: I was on a plane the other day and the
• 33:59
Speaker 2: engine failed. I just did a show in Charlotte area, Gastonia,
• 34:04
Speaker 2: North Carolina. And I can do a pretty good preacher
• 34:07
Speaker 2: Billy Graham voice. And so I was saying like, we're
• 34:10
Speaker 2: talking about, I do a joke about my accent being
• 34:12
Speaker 2: judged and everything. And I said, I like your accent.
• 34:15
Speaker 2: I could do North Carolina. And I started doing it.
• 34:17
Speaker 2: And they weren't like, that's not it. They were all like,
• 34:19
Speaker 2: you're nailing it. Everybody after the show was like, you
• 34:22
Speaker 2: nailed it. I want to hear it. Well, that's what
• 34:24
Speaker 2: I was doing. Won't you come? Others are coming. It's
• 34:26
  Speaker 2: very North Carolina.
• 34:29
Speaker 1: Can you say filling station?
• 34:30
Speaker 2: North Carolina. Filling station. why don't they call him that
• 34:36
Speaker 2: anymore i miss that i miss those days i think
• 34:38
Speaker 2: hey governor it's been a long time.
• 34:39
Speaker 1: South carolina still does last i heard.
• 34:42
Speaker 2: But i'm the governor of south carolina come on down
• 34:44
Speaker 2: to my filling station john let's do this week in
• 34:48
Speaker 2: history we call it talk about then john the first
• 34:56
Speaker 2: portable cell phone call was this week in 19 you
• 35:00
Speaker 2: want to guess Portable cell phone. Portable cell phone call.
• 35:04
Speaker 2: First one. 78. 73. Oh, wow. First portable cell phone
• 35:08
Speaker 2: call is made. General manager of Motorola's communication systems division
• 35:12
Speaker 2: calls his rival, which is kind of a something. Because
• 35:15
Speaker 2: you think about it, it had to be somebody else
• 35:17
Speaker 2: that had a mobile phone. I guess you could have
• 35:21
Speaker 2: called the landline. How do they know? But theirs doesn't work.
• 35:24
Speaker 2: Maybe he called them on a landline to be like, hey,
• 35:26
Speaker 2: guess where I'm calling you from? The desert, fool! Yeah.
• 35:32
Speaker 2: look no wires anyway it was his rival at the
• 35:35
Speaker 2: AT & T' s Bell Labs from the streets of New
• 35:38
Speaker 2: York City so he calls him from New York City
• 35:40
Speaker 2: and he's like you're not going to believe what I'm
• 35:42
Speaker 2: calling you and the phone's big enough it's like a
• 35:44
Speaker 2: stool it's like gigantic he's in the back of a
• 35:46
Speaker 2: van yeah he's got carpal tunnel from holding it but
• 35:51
Speaker 2: yeah that's the first you know what I remember the
• 35:54
Speaker 2: thing I remember what's funny about those big gigantic cell
• 35:56
Speaker 2: phones this is going to date us but I remember
• 36:01
Speaker 2: the bag phone was the first one, right? You play
• 36:05
Speaker 2: in the antenna, huge antenna on your car. But the
• 36:07
Speaker 2: thing I remember from popular culture was Zach Morris on
• 36:11
Speaker 2: saved by the bell had one. He's talking to his dad.
• 36:15
Speaker 2: His dad's constantly taking calls. He's like, I got to
• 36:18
Speaker 2: take this son. And then finally his dad's like, you know,
• 36:22
Speaker 2: at the end of the episode, it's like a come
• 36:24
Speaker 2: to Jesus, you know, moment where he's like, son, I'm sorry.
• 36:26
Speaker 2: I've been around. It's been super busy. But I'm sorry,
• 36:29
Speaker 2: I've got to take this. And he takes a call,
• 36:31
Speaker 2: and then it pans back over, and it's Zach on
• 36:33
Speaker 2: one of those gigantic phones. And he goes, hey, it's
• 36:35
Speaker 2: your son. It was basically like, the only way I
• 36:37
Speaker 2: can get your attention is to have one of these
• 36:39
Speaker 2: gigantic devices in my ear. Come on now. And won't that?
• 36:42
Speaker 2: And they both wept. Did they? No. Okay. I remember
• 36:46
Speaker 2: it was a moment that was like, I'm sorry, son.
• 36:48
Speaker 2: He drops his phone. Oh. In time, he developed a
• 36:51
Speaker 2: tumor because those old cell phones were really not great.
• 36:54
Speaker 2: That's the part. That's the part they don't tell you. No,
• 36:56
  Speaker 2: it was a two-parter.
• 36:57
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 36:58
Speaker 2: As was the tumor. Sit, Ubu, sit. The tumor was
• 37:01
Speaker 2: a two-parter, too. John, this week, born this week, the
• 37:07
Speaker 2: father of modern bodybuilding. Not me. A lot of people
• 37:10
  Speaker 2: think I was the– I hear that a lot. I'm
• 37:11
Speaker 2: the grandson of modern bodybuilding. I'm what happens when you
• 37:16
Speaker 2: stop for years on end and you start eating cheese duds.
• 37:21
Speaker 2: His name was Eugene Sandow. He was– it says Friedrich
• 37:26
Speaker 2: Wilhelm Muller. I don't know why there's two names. But anyway,
• 37:30
Speaker 2: Eugene Sandow was born April of 1867, which is a
• 37:33
Speaker 2: long time ago. to be the father of modern bodybuilding.
• 37:39
Speaker 2: He died in 1925. He was a German strongman, which
• 37:43
Speaker 2: German strongman, you don't want to hear that. You immediately
• 37:46
  Speaker 2: think Hitler.
• 37:47
  Speaker 1: In 1867.
• 37:47
Speaker 2: You don't want to be known as a German strongman.
• 37:50
Speaker 2: Come on, get out of here with that. But he
• 37:52
Speaker 2: organized the first bodybuilding contest in 1901. Wow. Sir Arthur,
• 37:58
Speaker 2: this is the weirdest part of this and why it
• 37:59
Speaker 2: probably makes the list. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creative Sherlock Holmes,
• 38:03
Speaker 2: was one of the judges. Huh. What was he doing there?
• 38:08
Speaker 2: He's supposed to be one of these literary thinkers. I'm
• 38:10
Speaker 2: going to go solve. I'm going to write mystery novels.
• 38:12
Speaker 2: He's like, you know what we should do tonight? Let's
• 38:14
Speaker 2: go watch these guys flex.
• 38:17
Speaker 1: You know, though, remember the one with Robert Downey Jr.,
• 38:20
  Speaker 1: the first one?
• 38:21
Speaker 2: Sure. Where he, like, goes into the boxing ring. Yeah. And, like,
• 38:25
Speaker 2: he's trained. He's seeing five moves ahead.
• 38:26
Speaker 1: He knows what to do and all.
• 38:28
Speaker 2: Maybe that's kind of. So he was into that physical fitness.
• 38:31
Speaker 2: Maybe that was part of the deal. I always thought
• 38:33
Speaker 2: that was just kind of. They took literary. agency with
• 38:36
Speaker 2: the character, but maybe he was more into physical exertion.
• 38:38
Speaker 1: What we do here on this podcast is we start
• 38:41
Speaker 1: piecing together the pieces of information.
• 38:43
Speaker 2: And then we make completely conjecture like total speculative things
• 38:49
Speaker 2: that have no real basis in reality. And then people
• 38:52
Speaker 2: call us out on it and then we don't apologize.
• 38:55
  Speaker 1: Talkaboutspeculation.com Absolutely.
• 38:58
Speaker 2: That domain is probably still available. John, this week, 1887,
• 39:03
Speaker 2: the first U.S. woman was elected mayor Uh, Susanna Salter
• 39:08
Speaker 2: is elected by Argonia, Kansas, which that seems like an
• 39:11
Speaker 2: area of the country that would not be that progressive. Sorry.
• 39:16
Speaker 2: In 1887. But here's how it happened. And this is
• 39:18
Speaker 2: why it makes the list.
• 39:19
  Speaker 1: Kansanites.
• 39:20
Speaker 2: She was nominated. Kansans. Kansans. Can we say Kansanites? Sorry.
• 39:27
Speaker 2: They're the Wisconsinites. She was nominated as a prank, John.
• 39:30
Speaker 2: She didn't find out. She was running until the morning
• 39:33
Speaker 2: of the election. But it's a happy ending because she
• 39:37
Speaker 2: was nominated without her knowledge by a group of men
• 39:38
Speaker 2: who opposed women in politics as an attempt to humiliate
• 39:41
Speaker 2: her and discourage other women from running for office. She
• 39:44
  Speaker 2: won with two-thirds.
• 39:45
  Speaker 1: Of the vote.
• 39:47
  Speaker 2: Backfired!
• 39:48
  Speaker 1: Yep.
• 39:49
Speaker 2: She served her one-year term and then declined to run
• 39:51
Speaker 2: for re-election. So she probably harassed this whole year, probably, right?
• 39:54
Speaker 1: I'm not even sure what that was, yeah.
• 39:55
Speaker 2: Yeah. But it doesn't say what happened that year, but
• 39:57
Speaker 2: evidently it was enough that she was like, I'm out.
• 40:01
Speaker 2: But she ran for a year, though.
• 40:02
Speaker 1: I want my wife to run for office.
• 40:03
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 40:04
Speaker 1: I think she'd have to start like county commissioner or whatever, probably.
• 40:07
Speaker 1: But yeah, she'd be so good.
• 40:10
  Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. I'd vote. I mean, it's a pay cut.
• 40:13
Speaker 2: She's doing okay in health care right now. Well, what
• 40:16
Speaker 2: do you get for county commissioner?
• 40:18
Speaker 1: I don't know if you get anything for county commissioner.
• 40:19
Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying. She'd have to still be like
• 40:21
  Speaker 2: having two jobs.
• 40:22
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 40:22
Speaker 2: Plus taking care of you. That's three jobs.
• 40:25
Speaker 1: But I think she's up for it.
• 40:27
Speaker 2: You're probably right. Lawyer driver, 2028. You got to wait
• 40:30
Speaker 2: that long? I don't know. Midterms.
• 40:32
Speaker 1: I just skipped to the, no, she, she is kind
• 40:34
Speaker 1: of commissioner next year by then president.
• 40:36
Speaker 2: I just want to say that if elected, I will
• 40:38
Speaker 2: not serve. If nominated, I will not run. If elected,
• 40:41
Speaker 2: I will not serve. Okay. Even if it's as a prank.
• 40:43
  Speaker 1: All right.
• 40:44
Speaker 2: I just want to sit back and, uh, you know,
• 40:48
Speaker 2: just complain, complain about all of it. No matter who. Listen,
• 40:51
Speaker 2: you got that one down. Thank you.
• 40:53
Speaker 1: If that's what you want to do, you are fulfilling
• 40:55
  Speaker 1: your life's.
• 40:56
Speaker 2: How much does that pay? If you have a podcast,
• 41:00
Speaker 2: still not much. John, this week, finally, this week, 1964,
• 41:04
Speaker 2: the Beatles take the number one position on the Billboard list.
• 41:10
Speaker 2: They also take positions two through five. Wow. I don't
• 41:14
Speaker 2: know if that's ever happened again. Or since. Taylor had
• 41:19
Speaker 2: all 10 on one of the charts. No, she didn't.
• 41:20
Speaker 2: She did at one point.
• 41:21
Speaker 1: Did she really? Yeah.
• 41:23
Speaker 2: I don't know if it was Billboard, but she had
• 41:24
Speaker 2: it on a chart. Yeah. This was 64. And I
• 41:27
Speaker 2: even looked up the songs to kind of round up
• 41:29
Speaker 2: those because it didn't say. I looked them up. Do
• 41:31
Speaker 2: you want to guess what the songs were in 1964?
• 41:32
Speaker 1: You're not a huge Beatles guy, but you can.
• 41:36
Speaker 2: Probably guess a couple of them. So this would have
• 41:38
  Speaker 2: been the more.
• 41:40
Speaker 1: I want to hold your hand.
• 41:41
Speaker 2: I want to hold your hand. Was number four. I
• 41:51
Speaker 2: have it in my head. I'm singing it. Number five
• 41:54
Speaker 2: was She Loves... Oh, Please Please Me. Okay. Wanna Hold
• 41:57
Speaker 2: Your Hand, number four. She Loves You. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 41:59
Speaker 1: I was singing yeah, yeah in my head and I
• 42:02
Speaker 1: couldn't get to the.
• 42:02
Speaker 2: Twist and Shout at number two. Okay, Twist and Shout
• 42:05
Speaker 2: is Beatles? Yeah. No. It's Lennon. What the cool thing
• 42:08
Speaker 2: about that one is, John Lennon was sick that day. Okay,
• 42:11
Speaker 2: hold on, hold on. Shaking our baby now.
• 42:15
Speaker 1: I thought that was Chubby Checker.
• 42:17
Speaker 2: Nope. Did he redo? Am I crazy? Maybe. They did
• 42:21
Speaker 2: Twist and Shout? They did Twist and Shout. The best
• 42:23
Speaker 2: part about it was... Come on, come on, come on, baby.
• 42:25
Speaker 2: So if you remember when we were sick... No, that's
• 42:26
Speaker 2: not Chubby... What's Chubby Checker? Do the twist. I'm sorry, guys.
• 42:30
Speaker 2: Come on, baby, let's do the twist. Somebody was screaming
• 42:32
Speaker 2: right then. So Twist and Shout was the Beatles. But listen,
• 42:34
Speaker 2: it's not a cover. I heard you screaming, listener, from
• 42:37
  Speaker 2: the future. Yeah.
• 42:39
  Speaker 1: Sorry, go ahead.
• 42:39
Speaker 2: But anyway, the most interesting part about that one is,
• 42:42
Speaker 2: and you can... check me but I'm almost positive I've
• 42:44
Speaker 2: read more than once that John Lennon was really sick
• 42:48
Speaker 2: and so he didn't want to do it and they
• 42:50
Speaker 2: were just like just push through that's why his voice
• 42:52
Speaker 2: sounds so different in that he's literally got a head
• 42:54
Speaker 2: cold that's why I didn't know it was the Beatles
• 42:55
  Speaker 2: he's got a head cold it's John Lennon's he's not
• 42:57
Speaker 2: got the John Lennon he's doing the it's really raspy
• 43:00
  Speaker 2: it's because he's sick.
• 43:02
Speaker 1: They should have made him sick more often sorry go
• 43:04
Speaker 1: ahead they might have made it.
• 43:06
Speaker 2: Number one John this week.
• 43:09
Speaker 1: 1964 I mean again this seems too early.
• 43:12
Speaker 2: Can't buy me love. Can you think of that? That's
• 43:15
Speaker 2: five bangers. I mean, no wonder. That's crazy. But while
• 43:19
Speaker 2: I was thinking about the Beatles, and we don't get it,
• 43:21
Speaker 2: this isn't a Beatles fanboy podcast, but I have friends,
• 43:24
Speaker 2: I have a comedian friend, Sean Reynolds, who's a Beatles lunatic.
• 43:28
Speaker 2: And he has all this archive stuff. He has all
• 43:30
Speaker 2: the old records and all the memorabilia. And he told
• 43:33
Speaker 2: me one time, he goes, the craziest thing is like
• 43:35
Speaker 2: when they became big to when they stopped making music,
• 43:39
Speaker 2: when you think about all the music they made, it's
• 43:41
Speaker 2: only a seven year period. Isn't that crazy to think about? Like,
• 43:44
  Speaker 2: the doo-wah, doo-wah, like, girl-crazy Beatles era when they're on
• 43:48
Speaker 2: the Ed Sullivan Show and all that, and that's happening.
• 43:50
Speaker 2: To the druggie, like, weird, you know, Yellow Submarine. Yellow
• 43:55
Speaker 2: Submarine years. That seven years. Like, they made so many
• 43:59
Speaker 2: different eras of themselves. It's like Taylor, John. Which is, yeah,
• 44:04
Speaker 2: it is. That's where we go.
• 44:05
  Speaker 1: Which is it.
• 44:05
Speaker 2: It all comes back to Taylor Swift for you and
• 44:07
Speaker 2: your family, doesn't it, John?
• 44:09
Speaker 1: She's written a lot of stuff.
• 44:10
  Speaker 2: I know.
• 44:10
Speaker 1: Look, whether you hate her or you love her, listen
• 44:12
  Speaker 1: to her.
• 44:13
Speaker 2: And we're not. She's done a lot of stuff. It's true.
• 44:16
Speaker 2: But anyway, that's the crazy top five billboards. I don't
• 44:19
Speaker 2: think Taylor's ever had top ten. I think you're wrong
• 44:22
  Speaker 2: about that.
• 44:22
Speaker 1: There's only one way to find out.
• 44:23
Speaker 2: There's no way. Did Taylor... Swift.
• 44:30
Speaker 1: Sorry, I can't type from this angle here.
• 44:33
Speaker 2: Boy. Ever have... Just talk amongst yourselves, listeners.
• 44:36
Speaker 1: Multiple songs on a single chart....
• 44:41
Speaker 2: It's going to be some weird chart, though, that's not
• 44:43
Speaker 2: the billboard. The billboard's different.
• 44:46
  Speaker 1: On a single.
• 44:47
Speaker 2: Give me a billboard 100, though. That's important.
• 44:51
Speaker 1: I'll just say billboard.
• 44:52
Speaker 2: Let's see. Billboard. I type for a living.
• 44:57
Speaker 1: All right. Thinking, working. Has not only had multiple songs charted,
• 45:02
Speaker 1: a single billboard chart. She has absolutely dominated. This is
• 45:05
Speaker 1: what he... This is what chat's saying.
• 45:06
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 45:07
  Speaker 1: Not me.
• 45:07
Speaker 2: Right. Actually, my chat....
• 45:11
Speaker 1: Model is named Preston. Just so you know. John.
• 45:15
Speaker 2: Let's see. Most jaw-dropping examples. October 2022. Yeah.
• 45:20
Speaker 1: She had, with the release of her album Midnight, Taylor
• 45:22
Speaker 1: Swift became the first artist in history to occupy all
• 45:25
Speaker 1: 10 spots, top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously.
• 45:29
  Speaker 2: Wow.
• 45:29
  Speaker 1: I was right.
• 45:30
Speaker 2: Okay. Very, very right. So you're saying that she's better
• 45:33
Speaker 2: than the Beatles by your way of thinking. Those songs
• 45:38
Speaker 2: would have been anti-hero. You're not naming all 10 songs, John.
• 45:42
  Speaker 1: Lavender Haze.
• 45:43
Speaker 2: We got to go. Okay. Sorry.
• 45:46
Speaker 1: Isn't that crazy though?
• 45:47
Speaker 2: I think it says more about today's listener. Cause like
• 45:50
  Speaker 2: a record comes out, you're, they're streaming it. That's probably
• 45:52
Speaker 2: how it happened back then.
• 45:55
Speaker 1: You think it'd be more, more possible back then because
• 45:58
Speaker 1: you were actually buying records.
• 45:59
Speaker 2: I guess. And then he had payola too, which there's
• 46:02
Speaker 2: still payola today too, as far as like what people
• 46:04
Speaker 2: spend and what people like.
• 46:06
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 46:06
Speaker 2: Yeah. It's not exactly a meritocracy, but. Why can't we
• 46:10
Speaker 2: be in on the corruption? Why can't, you know?
• 46:13
Speaker 1: I'm telling you, listen.
• 46:14
Speaker 2: When do we get to be the thing that's forced
• 46:16
Speaker 2: down people's throats? I know money corrupts people. Yeah. But
• 46:19
Speaker 2: how can I ever test that theory? Yeah, I want
• 46:22
Speaker 2: to find out for sure if it would change me. Yeah.
• 46:26
Speaker 1: Because, look, here's the thing. If we were both getting it,
• 46:29
Speaker 1: I would hold you accountable. You would hold me accountable.
• 46:33
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 46:33
Speaker 1: It would be just like.
• 46:35
Speaker 2: The community group. We'll be the good billionaires. Not the
• 46:38
Speaker 2: ones that get corrupted by wanting more and more and
• 46:42
Speaker 2: more and grinding poor people into fuel. We would be
• 46:44
Speaker 2: the good people. You can trust us. Yes. In fact,
• 46:48
Speaker 2: you should trust us. And that's why we'd appreciate your vote.
• 46:52
Speaker 2: And Laura Driver. 2028.
• 46:54
Speaker 1: You know what? I told you I'm watching West Wing again, right?
• 46:57
Speaker 2: Yeah, so is Curry. Because of you. Because you mentioned
• 46:59
Speaker 2: it on the show and then she started.
• 47:01
Speaker 1: So I forgot they had an episode... Probably around 2002.
• 47:04
Speaker 1: I don't know. I forget what season I'm in right now.
• 47:07
Speaker 1: I'm just in the season of bliss. That's all I know, Johnny.
• 47:12
  Speaker 2: Season of nostalgia.
• 47:13
Speaker 1: They had one where they paused the drama to do
• 47:18
Speaker 1: basically a documentary episode where they intertwined interviews with real.
• 47:25
  Speaker 2: Get this.
• 47:25
Speaker 1: Jimmy Carter was on there. Gerald Ford. Bill Clinton. And
• 47:32
Speaker 1: at that moment, George W. was in office, so they
• 47:34
Speaker 1: didn't have him. But they had then, I think Karl Rove.
• 47:38
  Speaker 2: Was on there.
• 47:38
Speaker 1: They had all the chiefs, like a bunch of chiefs
• 47:40
Speaker 1: of staff and communications people.
• 47:42
Speaker 2: And then they would interview them and ask them questions.
• 47:44
Speaker 1: And then they would go to like a clip from
• 47:46
Speaker 1: the show of the person who's playing their type of
• 47:50
Speaker 1: role actually doing something. And how like really close actually
• 47:54
Speaker 1: it was to what they're doing. But it was fascinating.
• 47:58
Speaker 1: My wife fell asleep during it. I don't want to
• 47:59
Speaker 1: talk about it. she might have been getting sick she
• 48:01
  Speaker 1: was not feeling.
• 48:03
Speaker 2: Well and she wants to be my county commissioner I.
• 48:05
Speaker 1: Know you can't do that you know what I'm saying
• 48:08
Speaker 1: if you want to be and if anyone ever resurfaces
• 48:10
Speaker 1: this episode could you imagine what it would do to
• 48:13
Speaker 1: her political career her burgeoning political career and what's crazy
• 48:17
Speaker 1: is I'm recording this and I don't have to release
• 48:19
Speaker 1: it no but I'm going to yeah we don't want
• 48:21
Speaker 1: to because we don't know how to edit that's right
• 48:23
Speaker 1: we don't know how to do it yeah oh my gosh.
• 48:27
Speaker 2: That's funny I don't know well that was it for
• 48:29
Speaker 2: history The Beatles. And you tried to trump the Beatles
• 48:32
Speaker 2: with Taylor Swift. I didn't try to trump. That's your legacy.
• 48:35
Speaker 2: Not only has it, but you're.
• 48:37
Speaker 1: A fool or whatever.
• 48:38
Speaker 2: That's fine. Well, congratulations to Miss Swift. I'm sure she'll
• 48:45
Speaker 2: be great. Yeah. I'm sure she'll make something of herself.
• 48:48
Speaker 2: You know who else is making something of themselves? That's
• 48:49
  Speaker 2: Johnny W.
• 48:50
Speaker 1: J-O-N-N-I-E-W.com is where you can go to find more about him,
• 48:54
Speaker 1: his comedy, and where you can go watch him live.
• 48:56
Speaker 2: There are some new tour dates going up. And then
• 48:59
Speaker 2: there's some that I have not been allowed to release yet,
• 49:02
Speaker 2: but they're coming. We call that a tease in radio.
• 49:05
Speaker 1: What I want to say is, guys, I know what
• 49:07
Speaker 1: those things are and you don't, and you're going to
• 49:09
Speaker 1: be super excited when you find out.
• 49:11
Speaker 2: Big news on the old W front. I got a
• 49:17
Speaker 2: little burgeoning county commission career myself.
• 49:20
  Speaker 1: Come on now.
• 49:21
  Speaker 2: I don't want to be the county commissioner. I don't
• 49:22
Speaker 2: even know what they do, and it sounds awful.
• 49:24
  Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think you'd like it.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: Gotta argue about, where did they cut this road?
• 49:30
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 49:31
Speaker 2: You know, they want to bring a crystal in, but
• 49:34
Speaker 2: White Castle's upset now. Like, I don't want to decide
• 49:37
Speaker 2: those things. Why can't we have both?
• 49:38
Speaker 1: You actually picked the one scenario that I'd be down for.
• 49:40
Speaker 2: Both? What we need is a taste test. We need a...
• 49:43
Speaker 2: Have them both bring us.
• 49:44
Speaker 1: Yes. And we'll talk about who's worthy of the road.
• 49:47
Speaker 2: I'm more... I think I'm more of a White Castle guy. Really?
• 49:50
Speaker 2: They're smushier. You know that they're the original hamburger. Yeah. Yeah.
• 49:54
Speaker 2: I mean, the original sold hamburger from, like, a restaurant. Yeah.
• 49:57
Speaker 1: I'm sure people made hamburgers before that.
• 50:00
Speaker 2: Sure. A beef sandwich. Yeah.
• 50:02
Speaker 1: But the slider came before the bigger burger. By the way,
• 50:06
Speaker 1: new season of Food Built America is out. There's one
• 50:10
  Speaker 1: on Doritos.
• 50:11
  Speaker 2: Not a sponsor.
• 50:12
Speaker 1: On Mexican food hitting the mainstream American culture. It's about pace... uh,
• 50:17
Speaker 1: picante and salsa, but there was no dipping chips and
• 50:21
Speaker 1: salsa before that. Did you know that? That's not what
• 50:24
Speaker 1: the people did. That's not how salsa began in American culture.
• 50:27
Speaker 1: The one thing that does bug me about it is
• 50:29
Speaker 1: it's always like, and then Mr. Pace, he tasted it
• 50:32
Speaker 1: one day at a, at a roadside stand. He had
• 50:34
Speaker 1: no idea what it was. It was too spicy.
• 50:36
Speaker 2: And he got into the lab.
• 50:37
Speaker 1: It was like almost all of these are just some
• 50:39
Speaker 1: person that knew nothing about the food and just tried
• 50:42
Speaker 1: to figure it out so they could mass market it.
• 50:44
Speaker 1: When I'm thinking like, Shouldn't it have been like a
• 50:46
Speaker 1: Latino person that was already selling this?
• 50:49
  Speaker 2: That's a chemist or something.
• 50:50
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 50:51
Speaker 2: So, which that's kind of like us.
• 50:53
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 50:53
Speaker 2: We don't know what we're doing. We have no idea.
• 50:55
Speaker 1: We're just in the lab right now.
• 50:56
Speaker 2: We're in the lab making something for you to dip
• 50:59
Speaker 2: your ears in. That's weird. Thanks for being a part.
• 51:03
Speaker 1: No, that's decreasing the spice. And when you do find
• 51:07
Speaker 1: out how they like, and they use some chemical compound
• 51:10
  Speaker 1: to take.
• 51:10
Speaker 2: The spiciness out of it or whatever, you're like, well, that's.
• 51:13
Speaker 1: It's no wonder we're having so many health issues.
• 51:15
Speaker 2: I saw a thing on TikTok that's terrified me. And
• 51:18
Speaker 2: it was basically that somebody says that the food companies
• 51:21
Speaker 2: now are trying to find a way because the GLP
• 51:25
Speaker 2: ones are out in the, you know, the, those impacts
• 51:28
Speaker 2: and the thing, so many people are on these shots
• 51:30
Speaker 2: and it makes you feel less hungry and it makes
• 51:32
Speaker 2: you crave salty and sweet snacks less. And so they're
• 51:37
Speaker 2: trying to put chemicals in the food to, counteract those
• 51:42
Speaker 2: basically to defeat the glp-1 wow to make them more
• 51:45
  Speaker 2: addictive wow what.
• 51:47
Speaker 1: About the people who are on our glp-1s they're just
• 51:49
Speaker 1: gonna like go literally hog wild over this why.
• 51:52
Speaker 2: Not make a chip that has the glp-1 in it.
• 51:55
Speaker 1: Like i ate it but i don't want any more
• 51:57
  Speaker 1: yes that's.
• 51:58
Speaker 2: You eat one you can't eat just one remember the
• 52:00
Speaker 2: old can't eat just one lay's potato chip It's just
• 52:03
Speaker 2: a big bag of air with one chip. One chip.
• 52:05
  Speaker 2: It's a GLP-1.
• 52:06
Speaker 1: And you charge much more money for it because even
• 52:09
Speaker 1: though you're not getting as many chips, you're living longer.
• 52:13
  Speaker 2: Thank you.
• 52:13
Speaker 1: You're selling life, Johnny. You're not selling chips. Guys, that's
• 52:17
Speaker 1: what we're selling here. Technically, we're not selling anything. And
• 52:20
Speaker 1: to be clear, just so you guys know, when you
• 52:23
Speaker 1: do all these things, Johnny and John aren't making money.
• 52:26
Speaker 2: Really anything well we do it for the love it
• 52:28
Speaker 2: goes back in we're basically county commissioners yeah.
• 52:31
Speaker 1: Yeah like maybe in fact I didn't even pay for
• 52:34
Speaker 1: this screen right here behind us if you're watching on
• 52:37
Speaker 1: YouTube where could they even see our YouTube videos they could.
• 52:39
Speaker 2: Go to youtube.com no they could go to talkaboutthatpodcast.com has
• 52:45
Speaker 2: all the YouTube videos and you can from there you
• 52:47
Speaker 2: can go to our account subscribe to our YouTube account though.
• 52:49
Speaker 1: We should start doing that like guys if you want
• 52:50
Speaker 1: to hear more just go to google that's g-o-o-g-l-e dot com.
• 52:54
Speaker 2: Type in our names yeah Yeah. Interesting. Do you ever
• 52:57
  Speaker 2: Google yourself? It's a dangerous game. I have, because I
• 53:02
Speaker 2: want to see if it's the other John Driver or not. Yeah.
• 53:06
Speaker 1: But I think I come up on more websites. But
• 53:09
Speaker 1: to my defense, or his defense, he's a Mennonite.
• 53:12
Speaker 2: Oh, you mean the other guy? In South America, yeah. Yeah,
• 53:14
Speaker 2: you got the similar name.
• 53:15
