- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. It is the Yukon
- 0:02Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show. Huskies will play U mass in a
- 0:05Speaker 1: pair of games this weekend. Game one is in Amherst
- 0:07Speaker 1: on Friday night and then game two seven o'clock at Toscano.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Our next radio broadcast, because the Yankees made it to
- 0:14Speaker 1: the World Series, will do the home We'll do the
- 0:15Speaker 1: two games of the Vermont Series in the first week. Yeah.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're all Red Sox fans, so yeah, we're all booming.
- 0:21Speaker 1: We were supposed to do Friday night's game up at
- 0:24Speaker 1: up at amhers but that is.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Not getting into the Cleveland team, you know, and watch
- 0:28Speaker 2: them play. But you know, have some friends in Cleveland
- 0:31Speaker 2: and they're die hard fans. They've been in they've been
- 0:35Speaker 2: probably a worse situation than the Red Sox fans. Oh yeah,
- 0:38Speaker 2: the last time the Tribes.
- 0:40Speaker 3: They yeah, forty something, they've got the longest drought as
- 0:44Speaker 3: it stands. Yeah, and ironically they beat the Red Sox
- 0:46Speaker 3: to get into the World Series the one game playoff
- 0:49Speaker 3: in forty eight.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And route again against the Yankees.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Yeah. Lou Boudrou the inventor of the shift, by the way,
- 0:55Speaker 1: on Ted Williams. That's old school stuff. Uh, Mike, we
- 0:59Speaker 1: mentioned going into the break you had to start Thomas
- 1:01Speaker 1: Haney in that because time Usili got hurt at the
- 1:04Speaker 1: end of the second Holy Cross game, made a fantastic
- 1:06Speaker 1: save on the play he got hurt. But what are
- 1:09Speaker 1: your thoughts on what Thomas gave you on the Friday night?
- 1:12Speaker 2: You know, it's a tough situation for him. I think
- 1:16Speaker 2: to start the season he was if he's going to
- 1:19Speaker 2: get into a college game. I don't think he was
- 1:21Speaker 2: expecting to start the BU game at BU. But he
- 1:24Speaker 2: did a great job. He did. He gave us a
- 1:27Speaker 2: chance to win the hockey game, and that's all I
- 1:29Speaker 2: could ask of him. So he stepped up in a
- 1:32Speaker 2: big situation.
- 1:34Speaker 3: So you you kind of said it there where it's
- 1:36Speaker 3: okay if he if he gets in, wouldn't have expected
- 1:39Speaker 3: to be that one. So what conversations did you have
- 1:41Speaker 3: as you're looking to bring him in from It's a
- 1:44Speaker 3: junior team in Maine, and so it's a little bit
- 1:46Speaker 3: atypical of a pedigree for a guy that would come
- 1:49Speaker 3: in and start against the number three team in the country.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Yeah, well, we recruited him, you know, as a third
- 1:57Speaker 2: string goaltender. Not that being said, we're going to play
- 2:00Speaker 2: the best players, but certainly you know Ty had had
- 2:04Speaker 2: experience and Callum had a very decorated junior career out
- 2:09Speaker 2: in BC. So you know, on your depth chart on paper,
- 2:15Speaker 2: you had those two ahead of Tommy. But both of
- 2:18Speaker 2: them have suffered some injuries here and that's the way
- 2:21Speaker 2: it goes.
- 2:22Speaker 1: You can get any either one of the injured goalies back
- 2:24Speaker 1: this weekend.
- 2:25Speaker 2: We're hoping too. Yeah, we're hoping to.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah, Callum hasn't got her in preseason, right.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, he's had an upper body injury and he's
- 2:33Speaker 2: been out. He hasn't practiced, so I don't think he's
- 2:37Speaker 2: practicing this week either.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Yeah, So then what does it look like in practice?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Are you just practicing with one guy in net? Or
- 2:43Speaker 3: does Vince get to strap it on.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Well, there's another student we brought in to put on
- 2:48Speaker 2: the roster just to help in practice from the club team.
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't even think he was playing on the club team,
- 2:53Speaker 2: but he had reached out to Vince earlier saying that
- 2:58Speaker 2: if we ever needed anybody, he had played some He
- 3:01Speaker 2: had played some college hockey Division III, and then he
- 3:04Speaker 2: transferred to Yukon and he's getting a degree at Yukon.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So he's been he's been great. He's filled in.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Who's who's the school that recently had to do that? Mack?
- 3:13Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, that's crazy, that's wild. Have you ever
- 3:17Speaker 1: had a situation like that where you've had to bring
- 3:20Speaker 1: someone in and and uh, actually have to play him? No,
- 3:26Speaker 1: not yet, Yeah that way. Let's let's talk Thomas a
- 3:32Speaker 1: little bit here. He's six to one Oceanport, New Jerseys
- 3:34Speaker 1: where he's from. Uh, what are some of the intangibles? Okay,
- 3:37Speaker 1: your jobs to stop the puck? He does that? But
- 3:39Speaker 1: does how does he handle the puck? What's he handles it?
- 3:42Speaker 2: Pretty well? I thought that his most impressive quality was
- 3:47Speaker 2: how cool and calm and collected. He was like, that's
- 3:51Speaker 2: a you know, you said there was homecoming weekend. That's
- 3:54Speaker 2: a tough building to play in. It's a hostile crowd,
- 3:57Speaker 2: and it didn't look like it phased him at all.
- 4:00Speaker 2: You know, he, like I said, he made some big
- 4:02Speaker 2: saves early and he gave us a chance to win.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Yeah. Bet that was the thing. Watching from Afar on television,
- 4:12Speaker 3: it felt like one of those situations where having to
- 4:16Speaker 3: make an early save got him settled in pretty quickly.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it did. You know, he didn't he had
- 4:22Speaker 2: to make a few. He didn't have to make anything
- 4:24Speaker 2: crazy early on. But no, I thought he did. You know,
- 4:29Speaker 2: he stopped a breakaway. Actually he stopped breakaway early, So yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 2: I thought the guys rallied around him and as I said,
- 4:39Speaker 2: he gave us everything he had.
- 4:41Speaker 1: How much notice did he have about being the goalie?
- 4:44Speaker 1: I mean Ty got hurt and the Holy Cross game.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, he did practice Thursday, but he couldn't, you know,
- 4:51Speaker 2: have to practice on Thursday. He just wasn't healthy enough
- 4:54Speaker 2: to play against Bu.
- 4:56Speaker 3: So I was doing a little map. Vince is in
- 4:59Speaker 3: his early thirty so he's just beyond.
- 5:01Speaker 2: His birthday today, Vince.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Happy birthday. Is Was it ever a thought that he
- 5:07Speaker 3: might have to get it in practice?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Okay? No, no, no, no.
- 5:12Speaker 1: How do you got his first goal of the year? Yes,
- 5:14Speaker 1: breakaway first period in a first period that sounded like
- 5:17Speaker 1: you guys played very very well. Is following on Twitter
- 5:20Speaker 1: while I was at a family function. But how do
- 5:22Speaker 1: he finally got off, gets off the shelf and gets
- 5:24Speaker 1: the first one to go in?
- 5:25Speaker 2: He did? Yeah, he you know, he was battling a
- 5:29Speaker 2: respiratory issue the first basically the first month of school,
- 5:33Speaker 2: and I think against BU was the first time I
- 5:36Speaker 2: saw him where he looked like his old self, like
- 5:39Speaker 2: he battled through Colgate and he battled through Holy Cross
- 5:41Speaker 2: just because that's who he is. But he had not
- 5:43Speaker 2: been feeling one hundred healthy, and I thought he had
- 5:47Speaker 2: a lot of jump and was was really into the
- 5:50Speaker 2: game at BU.
- 5:52Speaker 3: And to this point in the season, points wise, Jake
- 5:54Speaker 3: Percival has been outstanding. But he had the shorthanded goal
- 5:58Speaker 3: against Boston Universe, So it was a bit of a
- 6:01Speaker 3: give and go situation. Was that an intentional drop pass
- 6:05Speaker 3: when he was rushing down ice on the short handed
- 6:08Speaker 3: bid or with that?
- 6:09Speaker 2: So I think I think Taber was yelling for it
- 6:11Speaker 2: so and he was. He was kind of boxed. The
- 6:16Speaker 2: defenseman had a pretty good gap on him. So it
- 6:18Speaker 2: was a really nice play and then Taber giving it
- 6:20Speaker 2: back to him and it was a good finish.
- 6:22Speaker 1: Yeah, we're going to talk to Taber. He's one of
- 6:24Speaker 1: our guests along with Ryan Tettle tonight I'm the Coaches Show.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Tabor will be first. You mentioned this I think last
- 6:30Speaker 1: week or the week before with Jake's good start Percival.
- 6:33Speaker 1: In fact, both Jake's are off the good starts scoring
- 6:36Speaker 1: the puck. But they're both juniors now, they're both stepping up,
- 6:39Speaker 1: and obviously part of it is the progression of just
- 6:41Speaker 1: getting better and being more comfortable now that you were
- 6:44Speaker 1: in your third year.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I think the hallmark of a good program is
- 6:49Speaker 2: that when kids are juniors and seniors they start having
- 6:53Speaker 2: their best years. You want to see improvement throughout players.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I've said for years, I always thought Dick humilliate you
- 7:01Speaker 2: and h did a great job with that because you know,
- 7:04Speaker 2: Jason Kragg was a kid who had four goals as
- 7:06Speaker 2: a freshman and then he has thirty as a sophomore.
- 7:09Speaker 2: You know, he would just they had kids that you'd
- 7:12Speaker 2: be like, where's this kid been, and they just, you know,
- 7:15Speaker 2: they played, and they might play third fourth line minutes
- 7:17Speaker 2: or ten minutes a game, and then by the time
- 7:19Speaker 2: they're juniors and seniors, they're high end players. So that's
- 7:24Speaker 2: one of the things that we want to keep developing
- 7:26Speaker 2: players and you know, their best years of hockey. We
- 7:29Speaker 2: want them to be their junior and senior years at Yukon.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Both goals that were scored Chandor and Percival. It was
- 7:37Speaker 3: moved that forced Kuran to go one side to the
- 7:39Speaker 3: other and then slide it through the five hole. How
- 7:43Speaker 3: much practice and patience? Is that just one more tool
- 7:46Speaker 3: in the tool bag or is that something that you
- 7:48Speaker 3: guys work on because it is such an effective way
- 7:50Speaker 3: to beat the goalie.
- 7:51Speaker 2: Well, you see a lot of great goal scorers. They
- 7:53Speaker 2: try to shoot five hole because the goalie's got to
- 7:56Speaker 2: move his legs when you move the puck one way
- 7:59Speaker 2: there the howe he moved there from the kind of
- 8:00Speaker 2: backhand to his forehand. The goalie's got to respect that,
- 8:04Speaker 2: and if he doesn't, then he can shoot the puck,
- 8:06Speaker 2: you know, far side. But when the goalie moves his feet,
- 8:10Speaker 2: you know, there's an art to sliding it through. Jonathan
- 8:13Speaker 2: Taves used to be fantastic at it. He was so
- 8:15Speaker 2: good at it. And Sydney Crosby's very good at it,
- 8:20Speaker 2: So there is a skill to it.
- 8:22Speaker 1: We come back, we'll get an up there on the
- 8:24Speaker 1: freshman some of them making some impacts and one, uh, well,
- 8:28Speaker 1: about a week and a half ago in his first
- 8:29Speaker 1: game scored his first goal. That would be Trey Scott.
- 8:32Speaker 1: We're with Mike Kavanaughs, The Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're
- 8:34Speaker 1: live at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. Later, Tabor he slipping Ryan
- 8:37Speaker 1: Taddle here on Learfield
