Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: My name is Brad Dourif, and I'm listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's showtime.
- 0:22Speaker 3: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:25Speaker 3: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:30Speaker 3: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Million kilowatts of power. Okay, here's the deal. This is
- 1:09Speaker 3: not a diary.
- 1:10Speaker 4: It's a journal.
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I know what it says on the cover, but it's wrong.
- 1:16Speaker 2: You know, I mean, it's just.
- 1:20Speaker 5: Like, there's a lot of things that you just.
- 1:29Speaker 2: There needs to be a standardized governmental system that has
- 1:36Speaker 2: a standardized terms and lingo across the board so these
- 1:39Speaker 2: things don't happen.
- 1:41Speaker 1: At this point, do you really want the government getting
- 1:43Speaker 1: involved in anything else?
- 1:45Speaker 2: I think the government needs to form a bureau. That
- 1:50Speaker 2: some kind of Terry Gilliam, George Orwellian nightmare has a
- 1:55Speaker 2: form to fill out. If you are to use lingo,
- 1:57Speaker 2: you've got to have the proper documentation. And yeah, yeah.
- 2:02Speaker 1: And there's got to be lots of like ductwork and
- 2:04Speaker 1: tubes and things just kind of going everywhere while we
- 2:07Speaker 1: fill out our paperwork.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Don't forget your plastic wrap. Got to have it.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Oh, this is kind of the world we're living in now.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Just they haven't fully put in the rest of the
- 2:19Speaker 1: tubes and ducts yet. But, you know, we're still essentially
- 2:22Speaker 1: wrapping ourselves in plastic wrap before we go anywhere.
- 2:24Speaker 2: So my favorite thing is my favorite part of the
- 2:28Speaker 2: quarantine is all that plastic wrap I get to use now.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Before it was just in the bedroom, but now I
- 2:34Speaker 1: get to wear.
- 2:35Speaker 2: This out everywhere. Now I am accepted. I am no
- 2:38Speaker 2: longer have to hide. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:40Speaker 1: My kink has gone public.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It's like everything's gotten better. Yeah. It's like to go like,
- 2:47Speaker 2: let's just make the world, the world according to John Conkle.
- 2:50Speaker 2: And everybody wears plastic wrap now. It's just great. Yeah. Yeah.
- 2:55Speaker 1: That world sounds pretty.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Scary, actually. It can be.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Not just the plastic wrap, just whatever else is going
- 3:01Speaker 1: on in your head.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Well, it was scarier eight months ago, but now it's
- 3:05Speaker 2: like just day to day.
- 3:08Speaker 1: It's just normal life now.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 2: Like people used to go like, hey, what are you
- 3:13Speaker 2: most afraid of? And I would say like, oh, like
- 3:15Speaker 2: a pandemic or something like that. You know, stupid thing
- 3:18Speaker 2: to be afraid of. And then, you know, ha. Yeah.
- 3:24Speaker 1: I did see on somebody's page the other day, they
- 3:28Speaker 1: had a photo and it was taken. It looked like
- 3:31Speaker 1: they set it out by the side of the highway
- 3:33Speaker 1: or something. It was just like a big piece of
- 3:35Speaker 1: old wood and they'd like spray painted on it. It
- 3:37Speaker 1: just said... this virus sucks. I wanted zombies.
- 3:41Speaker 2: Right.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, yeah, this virus does suck. I'll
- 3:45Speaker 1: give you that.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's all of the downside and nothing, no flashy, you know,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I don't know about upside, but at least there's something
- 3:54Speaker 1: presentational about a zombie apocalypse. This is just like lame.
- 3:59Speaker 2: It's like, everybody's just become laying sad shut-ins. I got it.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Wait, I was already there.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I know. I was, I, I was a shut-in before
- 4:08Speaker 2: it was cool. So, you know, back when it was pure.
- 4:14Speaker 1: I recently posted that. They wanted something stupid at work
- 4:16Speaker 1: about people, and my comment was I was socially distancing
- 4:20Speaker 1: before it was cool.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Right, right. I did it as a choice. All these
- 4:24Speaker 2: other posers, man, they're just doing it because, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 2: the government's recommending it.
- 4:28Speaker 1: They're all doing it because, ooh, I don't want to die.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: As opposed to the lifestyle choice that I am living.
- 4:37Speaker 2: That's right. That's right. I get, you know, they're doing it,
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, so they can breathe. I'm doing it also
- 4:45Speaker 2: so I can breathe because I get nervous. I love people.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I have mental issues. Leave me alone.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It's like that Counting Crows song. It's like I got
- 5:02Speaker 2: trouble acting normal when I'm nervous. Oh, man.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 2: So speaking of zombies, I mean, right now, here's here's
- 5:16Speaker 2: some something, something I did. All right. Here's something I did.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I went to a this is. My first time ever
- 5:25Speaker 2: going out to a shooting range to shoot one of
- 5:30Speaker 2: those things.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I don't know if we should trust you with firearms.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Right, right, right. I was going like, we're in a quarantine.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I was just like, hey, we've got these guns laying around.
- 5:41Speaker 2: I have never shot them. You know, I've got three
- 5:45Speaker 2: kids and some guns laying around. Anyway.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm not even going to make a lot of the
- 5:50Speaker 1: comments that are going through my head right now. I'm
- 5:53Speaker 1: just going to let you continue the story.
- 5:56Speaker 2: That's right. I keep them, you know, I keep them
- 5:59Speaker 2: secure somewhere. Anyway. Don't judge.
- 6:01Speaker 1: You've got to keep them separated.
- 6:02Speaker 2: I keep them separated. I keep the kids and the
- 6:04Speaker 2: guns in their own areas. Anyway, so just some guns.
- 6:09Speaker 6: All right.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So we go out. And so this was... Not the
- 6:12Speaker 2: interesting thing is, you know, that I was like quoting
- 6:15Speaker 2: Charles Bronson movies during the firing of the weapons, but
- 6:20Speaker 2: that how impossible it is to find ammunition right now
- 6:26Speaker 2: because everybody is buying up ammunition. Stocking up. Stocking up.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Lock it up, man. You know? And I was going like,
- 6:35Speaker 2: if this had been a zombie apocalypse, I mean, we
- 6:38Speaker 2: would have been out of bullets like a long time ago.
- 6:40Speaker 2: This is like, everybody is out, we're out of ammo.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You can't buy ammo for certain, you know, common guns
- 6:47Speaker 2: right now.
- 6:48Speaker 1: That's because it's just before the full-on zombie apocalypse. What
- 6:53Speaker 1: you realize once you get in, especially you go into
- 6:55Speaker 1: something like The Walking Dead, which stretches out over a
- 6:58Speaker 1: really long period of time after the outbreak, is you
- 7:01Speaker 1: can pick up all the ammo you want off the
- 7:03Speaker 1: other dead bodies. So that's when you really get a
- 7:07Speaker 1: good stockpile going, is as you pull it off of
- 7:09Speaker 1: dead corpses.
- 7:10Speaker 2: The half-eaten dead. Yeah, yeah. Got it.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Or more than likely ones that you just shot, because,
- 7:16Speaker 1: you know, survival of the whoever's holding the gun. So
- 7:21Speaker 1: that's pretty much how the future works in zombie apocalypse land.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Right, right. I mean, then it gets to... You know,
- 7:27Speaker 2: eventually you run into the best part about the zombie
- 7:30Speaker 2: movies are the homemade zombie weapons, though. So it is
- 7:34Speaker 2: it is a build up. You run out of weapons
- 7:36Speaker 2: and then you've got to get the duct tape and
- 7:38Speaker 2: the free butcher knives and the baseball bat and, you know,
- 7:41Speaker 2: make some kind of weird mace, you know, out of
- 7:43Speaker 2: tin cans and nails.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Or possibly outfitting a vehicle so that it's specifically geared
- 7:51Speaker 1: to kill zombies. That's that's always a really big plus
- 7:55Speaker 1: in my book.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Yeah, the zombie killer, the gore mobile or whatever they
- 8:00Speaker 2: call it.
- 8:01Speaker 1: The kill machine, you know.
- 8:02Speaker 2: Something awesome's got to be spray painted on the side
- 8:06Speaker 2: before you take off.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Well, you've got to put big teeth on the front
- 8:09Speaker 1: where you've pulled the entire front off of a bulldozer
- 8:13Speaker 1: and mounted it onto the front of your school bus.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And then you've got to spray paint some teeth on
- 8:18Speaker 1: it so it looks like it's badass because it is.
- 8:20Speaker 1: So yeah, you've got to have a little artistic flair
- 8:24Speaker 1: when you're going to go murder people.
- 8:25Speaker 2: You know, I was listening to a George Miller, a
- 8:30Speaker 2: George Miller interview talking about how, why everything is so,
- 8:35Speaker 2: got so much art design in like the Fury Road
- 8:40Speaker 2: movie and stuff. He's going like, these people basically, they got...
- 8:48Speaker 2: it boils down to, they got nothing better to do
- 8:50Speaker 2: other than to be really creative. You know, it's like,
- 8:53Speaker 2: it's like, you got nothing, you got, there's nothing in
- 8:55Speaker 2: the future that you're really just got. It was like,
- 8:58Speaker 2: kind of like, you know, uh, prisoners who like make,
- 9:03Speaker 2: you know, these elaborate, uh, religious like crosses and stuff
- 9:07Speaker 2: out of like, toilet paper and plastic bag.
- 9:12Speaker 1: It's funny. That's exactly what I was thinking of when
- 9:14Speaker 1: you said that. I started thinking of the weird prison
- 9:17Speaker 1: culture that is like, okay, we're issued all the same clothes,
- 9:22Speaker 1: we're issued the same dumb shoes, but our crazy hairstyle,
- 9:26Speaker 1: we can do whatever. This is Only way we have
- 9:29Speaker 1: to express ourselves is weird body art and like crazy hairstyles.
- 9:33Speaker 1: So like you get those like giant pompadours or stuff
- 9:36Speaker 1: that you see on prisoners.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:38Speaker 1: Maybe in movies.
- 9:39Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 9:39Speaker 1: I try to stay out of prison, but it's supposedly
- 9:43Speaker 1: like its own culture is like how, how much you
- 9:46Speaker 1: can express yourself like that. So you take that and
- 9:48Speaker 1: just turn it up to 11 as the world's falling apart.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It's like, well, I have nothing else. The only way
- 9:54Speaker 1: I have to express who I am as a, tortured
- 9:58Speaker 1: soul in the future is to get a mohawk and,
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know, bare my chest and strap on some leather buckles. And,
- 10:05Speaker 1: you know, I'm good to go.
- 10:06Speaker 2: I mean, how many bombs are we away from everybody
- 10:11Speaker 2: who's wearing leather buckles everywhere? I mean, that's the real question,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I guess. I mean.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I've got a few stored away in the drawer over there,
- 10:19Speaker 1: just in case.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh. Yeah, yeah. I was watching some trailer
- 10:26Speaker 2: from some Gerald Butler movie that's coming out.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I know, I know, right? It was by Gerald Butler.
- 10:35Speaker 2: It looks like Geostorm 2, which is probably... Geostorm is
- 10:40Speaker 2: probably the greatest 90s movie made, you know.
- 10:45Speaker 1: God, was that 90s? I thought that was.
- 10:47Speaker 2: It was like two years ago, but it's still.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Okay, I was like, I thought that was recently.
- 10:52Speaker 2: The poster, everything about Geostorm is like 1998, you know?
- 10:57Speaker 1: It's like right after the success, I'm using kind of quotes,
- 11:02Speaker 1: from Twister, you know, you get the release of Geostorm.
- 11:06Speaker 2: It's really almost like they found a movie in a
- 11:08Speaker 2: box that they forgot to release. And they're just like, oh,
- 11:11Speaker 2: let's put it on there and see what happens, you know?
- 11:14Speaker 2: But he's got another one coming out, and it looks
- 11:17Speaker 2: like Geodorm 2, but it's about comets.
- 11:21Speaker 3: What?
- 11:22Speaker 2: It's basically like Deep Impact or Armageddon. It's like Gerald
- 11:27Speaker 2: Butler's career has become remaking 90s movies, I guess. I
- 11:31Speaker 2: don't know what's going on here. It's like a Deep
- 11:35Speaker 2: Impact movie. I mean, I.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Guess there's worse things you could do with your life.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I guess so. I mean, watching the trailer was so
- 11:43Speaker 2: depressing though. My point was this end of the world.
- 11:48Speaker 2: I think, I think now it's like, now that, you know,
- 11:51Speaker 2: it feels like everybody's like shut in and you can't
- 11:54Speaker 2: do anything. It's like watching a movie about the world
- 11:57Speaker 2: ending is like the, the most depressing thing you could do,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you know?
- 12:02Speaker 1: I've kind of laid off. I feel like sort of, well,
- 12:06Speaker 1: there was one I recently watched that I, guess is
- 12:10Speaker 1: sort of post-apocalyptic i don't really know i uh i
- 12:15Speaker 1: avoided this whole series initially and then i but i
- 12:21Speaker 1: mean i don't i'd say i don't know why i
- 12:23Speaker 1: kind of i mean we all know why once we
- 12:26Speaker 1: saw the trailer but i ran across a very cheap
- 12:29Speaker 1: copy of divergent.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Oh right right and And I was.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Like, all right. Like, I still feel like I should
- 12:37Speaker 1: watch those. I'm a movie geek and I like, you know,
- 12:41Speaker 1: things falling apart and people fighting in the future or
- 12:44Speaker 1: whatever the hell is going on. I really didn't know
- 12:46Speaker 1: that much about it, but I was like, all right,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I kind of remember these being a thing. And I
- 12:50Speaker 1: continually made fun of the names of the movies because
- 12:54Speaker 1: I kept wanting the third one to rhyme too. So like, no,
- 12:58Speaker 1: I was going for like detergent or eventually I think
- 13:01Speaker 1: I just started referring to the third one as be smurgent.
- 13:05Speaker 1: I think just like randomly, I, again, my 11 year
- 13:10Speaker 1: old mind thought that was hilarious. And so now I'm
- 13:12Speaker 1: like divergent colon be smurgent. So like, that's, that's the
- 13:19Speaker 1: trilogy in my mind.
- 13:20Speaker 6: Right.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:22Speaker 1: But I hadn't watched any of them. So I ran
- 13:24Speaker 1: across this copy and it was cheap and I was like,
- 13:26Speaker 1: all right, fine. And they also had the second one.
- 13:29Speaker 1: So I'm like, well, I guess while it, while it's here,
- 13:32Speaker 1: I might as well grab that one. Um, I might
- 13:35Speaker 1: get around to watching that second one.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I don't know. Oh, right, right.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I watched the first one last week and I was
- 13:42Speaker 1: just like, I am so bored. And I don't know
- 13:48Speaker 1: what it is. Like, I'm like, it's a, I was surprised. Like,
- 13:51Speaker 1: I think I'd forgotten the cast that they had. It's
- 13:53Speaker 1: got a pretty impressive cast. It's not like it's a
- 13:56Speaker 1: low budget. Like they've got decent effects. Like everything's there,
- 14:01Speaker 1: but I'm like, there's just no connection. I just kept
- 14:03Speaker 1: sitting there going, I really don't care what happens to
- 14:06Speaker 1: these people.
- 14:08Speaker 2: This is something. Okay, very similar. I tried to watch
- 14:11Speaker 2: some show called The 100. Yeah, I watch.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Everything else on the CWs. So I always am sitting
- 14:20Speaker 1: there when the commercials are on. I'm usually sitting there
- 14:23Speaker 1: when it comes on next. And I'm just kind of like, yeah,
- 14:26Speaker 1: I don't.
- 14:26Speaker 2: I just don't.
- 14:27Speaker 1: I just don't.
- 14:29Speaker 2: Yeah, my problem is, my problem is, I watched the
- 14:33Speaker 2: first episode and I was like, I just don't care
- 14:36Speaker 2: about the problems of 19 year olds.
- 14:39Speaker 1: You're all too damn pretty.
- 14:40Speaker 2: It's too pretty. I mean, it's going like, what? They
- 14:44Speaker 2: don't have that look that life has kicked the chair
- 14:47Speaker 2: out from under them. So I'm kind of like, look,
- 14:52Speaker 2: whatever you're going through, you're going to bounce back from. So,
- 14:55Speaker 2: you know, it doesn't, and they're kind of like going
- 14:58Speaker 2: through all this, you know teenage drama and stuff like
- 15:03Speaker 2: that so i i have trouble my patience and that's
- 15:09Speaker 2: and that's just uh if it's too loud you're too
- 15:12Speaker 2: old you know i know i know i know i
- 15:15Speaker 2: know they're.
- 15:16Speaker 1: Too pretty you're too.
- 15:17Speaker 2: Old oh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah absolutely yeah yeah
- 15:20Speaker 2: i'm going like uh uh uh is it kira sedgwick
- 15:24Speaker 2: in this movie she's.
- 15:28Speaker 1: My age i can identify.
- 15:30Speaker 6: With her i can't that's the only name i can
- 15:39Speaker 6: come up with right now but uh.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah yeah so i'm going like you know i don't
- 15:45Speaker 2: know guys i usually now it's like i'm at the
- 15:47Speaker 2: age where i It's like I'm more relating to the
- 15:50Speaker 2: evil scientist, you know, versus the kids who have to, like,
- 15:55Speaker 2: do some stupid, you know, task, you know.
- 16:00Speaker 1: I'm both. Like, I certainly get the evil scientist thing.
- 16:03Speaker 1: That's how I, you know, I'm modeling a good portion
- 16:06Speaker 1: of my life after them.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:07Speaker 1: But there's still me that's the 11-year-old kid riding their
- 16:11Speaker 1: bicycles around. You know, I think mentally I'm still that 11-year-old. So, like,
- 16:17Speaker 1: it's a weird mixture. I don't know where I fall.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Oh, right.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Right.
- 16:21Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 2: No, I just watched... God, I wish I could tell
- 16:24Speaker 2: you War Games. Oh, man.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Oh, man.
- 16:27Speaker 2: I just watched War Games. And I forgot how much
- 16:31Speaker 2: I loved Ally Sheedy. Oh, no.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I have never forgotten. I had such a weird crush
- 16:37Speaker 1: on her that... Those early movies, like, I just... Especially, like,
- 16:42Speaker 1: even as you get, like, it became such a thing
- 16:44Speaker 1: by the time they hit, like, Breakfast Club. And I'm
- 16:46Speaker 1: just like, yeah, yeah, Molly Ringwald, whatever. But this basket
- 16:49Speaker 1: case over here, I am all about her.
- 16:52Speaker 2: No, no, no, no. Basket case El-Hashidi was deep, dark obsession.
- 16:56Speaker 2: That was like, that was like, John, we've got to talk.
- 17:01Speaker 2: You know, you've got to go to school. You've got to,
- 17:04Speaker 2: you know, reenter society again. Somehow, you know, you've got
- 17:07Speaker 2: to focus on your grades.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that didn't happen. It's a shame, but.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Yeah, no, no, no. No, the Ali Chidi Breakfast Club, like,
- 17:15Speaker 2: put me down a path that I'm still not recovered, so... But, yeah, War.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Games, she's just, like, normal kind of high school girl,
- 17:23Speaker 1: so even that's, like, adorable in its own weird way.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and she's, like, I got that she was
- 17:29Speaker 2: a jock watching the movie again. Like, she was always running,
- 17:33Speaker 2: and she's like, hey, let's swim this, you know, five
- 17:35Speaker 2: miles back to shore, and... you know and it's kind
- 17:38Speaker 2: of it's like a cute relationship between her and Matthew
- 17:42Speaker 2: Broderick watching it again I was getting more out of
- 17:44Speaker 2: it than you know I did when I was 12
- 17:47Speaker 2: watching it you know especially like just I was going
- 17:50Speaker 2: like oh man I kind of like relate more now
- 17:52Speaker 2: to like Dr. Falcon you know.
- 17:57Speaker 1: I only understand Joshua I'm sorry like I kind of
- 18:02Speaker 1: get the guy who just wants to like be you
- 18:04Speaker 1: know kind of you know wants to be by himself
- 18:06Speaker 1: on an island and you know, watch eight millimeter movies
- 18:09Speaker 1: about dinosaurs and, you know, and, uh, Recreate my dead
- 18:14Speaker 1: child as a computer.
- 18:17Speaker 2: I got to like this guy, you know, Matthew Broderick,
- 18:21Speaker 2: you know, as I get older, you know, you know,
- 18:24Speaker 2: it's definitely in Ferris Bueller, the, the, the, the cult
- 18:29Speaker 2: of personality thing just really gets on my nerves, you know, but, um,
- 18:33Speaker 2: you know, it was like, he's kind of got like a, Hey,
- 18:35Speaker 2: aren't I, aren't I a cute little pepsi kid? And
- 18:39Speaker 2: that's nuts.
- 18:40Speaker 1: You know, that's, I mean, he straddles that line. Like
- 18:45Speaker 1: it almost works pretty well in Ferris Bueller. Like I
- 18:48Speaker 1: do still like, but you do kind of like start
- 18:51Speaker 1: to hate him by the, I'm like, no wonder they
- 18:53Speaker 1: gave Jeannie a car. You're kind of a dick. Yeah.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. No, no, no, no. Um, um, I still
- 19:01Speaker 2: like him in war games. He's not like, you know,
- 19:03Speaker 2: just like, you know, on full tilt ego mode, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 2: he's kind of a, but by war, by, by the
- 19:10Speaker 2: time Ferris Bueller rewatching that recently, I was going like,
- 19:12Speaker 2: I was really annoyed with him. And, you know, of
- 19:16Speaker 2: course I was like, I used to be like, Oh,
- 19:18Speaker 2: I like Cameron, you know? Cameron's the guy, but you know,
- 19:21Speaker 2: we're like, Cameron, man, you gotta stand up, dude. You gotta,
- 19:24Speaker 2: you gotta, don't let this guy just drag you around
- 19:27Speaker 2: and stuff. You know, assert yourself, you know? I don't know.
- 19:32Speaker 1: As time's gone on now, I think my favorite thing
- 19:35Speaker 1: is the weird alternate story going on in Ferris Bueller
- 19:41Speaker 1: that people have created. Because for years, we've heard the
- 19:43Speaker 1: Fight Club thing.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 1: But I was just, I was listening to a show
- 19:47Speaker 1: that actually was from years ago, but they had a
- 19:50Speaker 1: whole new one that Ferris is a time traveler from
- 19:52Speaker 1: the future.
- 19:53Speaker 2: What?
- 19:55Speaker 1: And there's a reason why he doesn't really fit in
- 19:57Speaker 1: and he seems to be in his own little world
- 20:00Speaker 1: there and can do whatever he wants and fears no
- 20:04Speaker 1: consequences because he's just going to zap out and do
- 20:06Speaker 1: whatever the hell he wants in the future.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 20:10Speaker 1: So I don't know. The more I thought about it,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I was like, you can find some pretty, some pretty
- 20:14Speaker 1: interesting ways to go with that one. I'm okay with
- 20:17Speaker 1: that one too. So I just like continually coming up
- 20:19Speaker 1: with an entirely alternate plot going on in the middle
- 20:22Speaker 1: of Ferris Bueller's day off.
- 20:24Speaker 2: No, I like it. I mean, after you've seen, I say,
- 20:25Speaker 2: I don't like it, but it's like, I've seen Ferris
- 20:28Speaker 2: Bueller probably 700 times, you know? Yeah. It's just a way,
- 20:32Speaker 2: it's a, you know, these people come up with stuff.
- 20:35Speaker 2: It's just a good way to, uh, you know freshen
- 20:39Speaker 2: it up a bit you know but War Games is
- 20:43Speaker 2: an amazing movie and it was like even better after
- 20:46Speaker 2: seeing that I haven't seen it in 20 years and
- 20:49Speaker 2: then watching it I was like man this is great
- 20:55Speaker 2: and I was like embarrassingly I was like finding myself
- 20:59Speaker 2: like getting choked up at the end when like you
- 21:01Speaker 2: know I was going like oh my god I have
- 21:03Speaker 2: become so maudlin as the years go on You know,
- 21:08Speaker 2: and like, you know, when like the little robot goes like,
- 21:12Speaker 2: do not play the game or whatever it is, you know,
- 21:15Speaker 2: and I'm going like, that was freaking beautiful, man. Nobody
- 21:22Speaker 2: cares about nuclear war anymore.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I totally get it. I mentioned all the time on
- 21:30Speaker 1: this show that I've become such a sap in my
- 21:33Speaker 1: old age and it's, always for the weird stuff. Like
- 21:36Speaker 1: it's not the normal emotional moments that other people get
- 21:39Speaker 1: choked up over. It's just a weird moment. And in
- 21:42Speaker 1: the middle of it, I was just like, oh shit,
- 21:44Speaker 1: this is really, and other, if there were anyone else
- 21:48Speaker 1: watching anything with me, which there rarely is, they would
- 21:51Speaker 1: just be like, what the hell is wrong with you?
- 21:53Speaker 1: Like I picked the strangest moments to get super like
- 21:57Speaker 1: emotional about now. And I, I, again, that's just some
- 22:00Speaker 1: weird thing. I've gotten older.
- 22:01Speaker 2: No, no, it's totally true. And, for me, it's like
- 22:04Speaker 2: the greatest part of any movie is when it can
- 22:09Speaker 2: like crack through those built up years of, uh, of, of, uh,
- 22:16Speaker 2: of defensiveness and anger and resentment.
- 22:23Speaker 1: You're like, damn it, I've been building these walls for years.
- 22:26Speaker 2: What are you doing, movie? Yeah, when a movie can
- 22:28Speaker 2: crack through that and make you, give you that emotional,
- 22:33Speaker 2: you know, make your, you know, in that day, the
- 22:35Speaker 2: Gritch's heart grew three times that day. You know, that's
- 22:39Speaker 2: like the greatest feeling, you know, and I seek that
- 22:42Speaker 2: out with my kids. Because, like, I think it's that
- 22:47Speaker 2: sociopathic kind of tendency I got where I just love
- 22:51Speaker 2: to watch them cry during movies. And it's like that
- 22:56Speaker 2: beautiful expression of innocence and sadness that you just can't
- 23:01Speaker 2: get anywhere.
- 23:04Speaker 1: You are an evil bastard.
- 23:06Speaker 2: I know. I know. I can't help it. It's just
- 23:09Speaker 2: so good to show them a sad movie and watch
- 23:11Speaker 2: them cry about it. That sounds so terrible. It's not
- 23:16Speaker 2: like I've got the martini glass and I'm catching their
- 23:19Speaker 2: tears or anything.
- 23:21Speaker 1: So you say.
- 23:22Speaker 2: That was a very specific image.
- 23:27Speaker 1: So specific that I think we're going to have to
- 23:32Speaker 1: go to your kids for this answer.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Hold on. Like, you know, I mean, cause you know,
- 23:36Speaker 2: I mean, you know, ET and all that kind of stuff,
- 23:38Speaker 2: you know, it's weird what movies don't, they don't cry during. I,
- 23:42Speaker 2: you know, I may have already talked about this on
- 23:44Speaker 2: a previous episode, so we can, we can move on,
- 23:46Speaker 2: but yeah, but yeah, that kind of emotional impact is, is,
- 23:52Speaker 2: is great. But War Games is great because it got me,
- 23:55Speaker 2: you know, like, I guess you just don't quite register
- 24:01Speaker 2: the weight of nuclear annihilation when you're 12, you know,
- 24:05Speaker 2: and then, you know, you get older, you go like, yeah, man, I,
- 24:08Speaker 2: All my stuff is here. I can't... I don't know.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I feel like at that point in time, we did.
- 24:16Speaker 1: I remember being a kid in the middle of that world,
- 24:19Speaker 1: and it felt like everything was riding on that. We really.
- 24:24Speaker 1: And I don't know that we talked about it all
- 24:26Speaker 1: the time, like nationally, I feel like they didn't sit
- 24:28Speaker 1: on the news being like, well, we could all die tomorrow.
- 24:31Speaker 1: But like, there was just this tone growing up in
- 24:34Speaker 1: that era that you were just like, you kind of
- 24:36Speaker 1: knew it. Like you, you, you knew that like potentially
- 24:41Speaker 1: at any moment, like something could go wrong and we're
- 24:44Speaker 1: all taken out or worse. You survive in some sort
- 24:47Speaker 1: of nuclear wasteland. So like, I feel like I remember
- 24:51Speaker 1: that as being such a, a, formative part of my,
- 24:55Speaker 1: my early adolescence, uh, pre-adolescence. Like I just remember a
- 25:00Speaker 1: lot of that as a kid.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Oh yeah, definitely. Me too. Me too. And it was
- 25:04Speaker 2: like this scary looming thing over your life, you know?
- 25:09Speaker 1: And, um, and I feel like that, that version of
- 25:12Speaker 1: that is gone now. We, we certainly had some new
- 25:15Speaker 1: ones thrown at us, but I'm like it, all the
- 25:18Speaker 1: bombs are still sitting there. Like, it's not like they
- 25:21Speaker 1: went away, but like, that's not what we worry about now.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like the public, what do they call it?
- 25:26Speaker 2: The public discourses has moved on or something.
- 25:29Speaker 1: It's shifted.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Not that it's not, not that it stopped. It's just like,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I guess we got used to it, you know, or something.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I was funny. That interview you did with Alex Cox,
- 25:39Speaker 2: he was talking about nuclear arms and he's talking about
- 25:43Speaker 2: how scary it is that we can blow it ourselves up.
- 25:47Speaker 2: I was going like, oh, Alex Cox, you're so 80s.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Still living in the heyday of the 80s, I know.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Good for you, man. Good for you. You've got to
- 25:59Speaker 2: keep the dream, man. Keep it going.
- 26:02Speaker 1: I mean, things were simpler back in those days.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Except for, you know, destruction at any given moment.
- 26:10Speaker 1: But I mean, we've had that for a while now.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true.
- 26:13Speaker 1: World War II on, we've been ready to die at
- 26:16Speaker 1: the drop of a bomb. So, you know, we all
- 26:19Speaker 1: move on and get dead into that. It's really sad.
- 26:22Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Carry on with our lives. Oh, well.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Exactly. Exactly.
- 26:27Speaker 1: But think that's what we're going to be doing here.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Like we're already like we're in the middle of a pandemic.
- 26:33Speaker 1: Our country has shut down essentially on many levels. So
- 26:37Speaker 1: like now people are still just trying to be like, oh, well,
- 26:40Speaker 1: I got to I got to go to work. I
- 26:42Speaker 1: still got to figure out how to pay rent. Like
- 26:43Speaker 1: there's still all these regular day to day problems that
- 26:46Speaker 1: everybody's dealing with. So looking forward, like we're already like
- 26:49Speaker 1: we don't know what's happening with the pandemic part of it.
- 26:53Speaker 1: but we're still going to be like, eh, whatever. We're
- 26:55Speaker 1: going to be numb to it, assuming it never goes away.
- 26:58Speaker 1: What if we're walking around in full-on hazmat suits for
- 27:01Speaker 1: the rest of our lives, but we're still like, eh,
- 27:04Speaker 1: got to go to work tomorrow. It's like we're going
- 27:06Speaker 1: to get numb to everything eventually.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. What's driving me crazy, though, is just the...
- 27:18Speaker 2: I know things are slowly opening, but.
- 27:22Speaker 2: What's driving me nuts is, uh, the, the, I was
- 27:28Speaker 2: really like, okay with this whole quarantine stuff and like, Oh,
- 27:31Speaker 2: you know, my life over, you know, it's just, my
- 27:35Speaker 2: life is going on as expected. I just don't leave
- 27:38Speaker 2: the house even more than I used to not. And, um,
- 27:44Speaker 2: now it's, now it's starting to get to me a
- 27:46Speaker 2: little bit, you know, and now what I've found is
- 27:49Speaker 2: the little things that I used to do, uh, just
- 27:52Speaker 2: to keep my sanity, like occasionally go and see a
- 27:55Speaker 2: movie or going to go and sit in a coffee
- 28:00Speaker 2: shop for a, you know, work on my iMac. No, no,
- 28:03Speaker 2: just sit in a coffee shop and stare off into
- 28:05Speaker 2: the middle distance.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Work on my screenplay, you know.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Work on my screenplay on my iMac, you know. No,
- 28:11Speaker 2: just to stare off into the middle distance and drink
- 28:14Speaker 2: a cup of coffee and getting out of the house
- 28:18Speaker 2: just to do little stupid things, you know. Or, like,
- 28:21Speaker 2: going to go eat breakfast somewhere, those kind of things.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:26Speaker 2: That kind of stuff, I didn't realize how at least
- 28:29Speaker 2: that kept me a little centered, you know? Now it's like,
- 28:33Speaker 2: how do you blow off.
- 28:34Speaker 9: Steam, you know?
- 28:35Speaker 1: I mean, it just breaks up the monotony, essentially. Because
- 28:39Speaker 1: I think about it, and I'm like, in a way, like,
- 28:41Speaker 1: this year has been less to worry about because... And again,
- 28:46Speaker 1: everything comes back to the show. God forbid I not
- 28:49Speaker 1: worry about the show, but like it's, I'm constantly just
- 28:52Speaker 1: like any other year juggling the 19 places we're going
- 28:55Speaker 1: to go, who we're talking to, what we're doing next
- 28:58Speaker 1: with the next episode. And now it's just like, nothing
- 29:01Speaker 1: is going on. So I'm just like, Oh hell, I
- 29:04Speaker 1: can stay home and get some things accomplished and I
- 29:06Speaker 1: can watch the movies and like, and then we just
- 29:09Speaker 1: record an episode and I put it together and move on.
- 29:11Speaker 1: But like, there's no spinning plates involved. So I'm like,
- 29:15Speaker 1: in a way, I'm like, this year has been sort
- 29:17Speaker 1: of a vacation from all that. And now we just
- 29:21Speaker 1: get to do the fun part, which is sit around
- 29:23Speaker 1: and talk about movies with people that I like doing
- 29:26Speaker 1: that with. So that's a good lead in to our
- 29:30Speaker 1: lengthy intro and to.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Introduce you once.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Again this episode. So um what's up and welcome to
- 29:38Speaker 1: movie meltdown i'm brian and i'm coming to you live
- 29:42Speaker 1: via the magic of the internet once again we've we're
- 29:46Speaker 1: still as previously mentioned in the middle of a crazy
- 29:49Speaker 1: quarantine pandemic I don't know, we've loosened the grip a little,
- 29:53Speaker 1: but we're still kind of living in it. So I'm
- 29:57Speaker 1: using the magic of the internet as it just gives
- 30:01Speaker 1: me an excuse to kind of play around with the
- 30:03Speaker 1: other options. I like sitting down and talking to people
- 30:06Speaker 1: in the same room, but when that's not an option,
- 30:09Speaker 1: I'm like, okay, well, now that I can use this,
- 30:12Speaker 1: what can we do with it? How do I make
- 30:14Speaker 1: use of it? And I don't know, talk to people
- 30:16Speaker 1: that live a little further away, which is what we're
- 30:19Speaker 1: doing this week. So, joining me is... Sam. I had
- 30:25Speaker 1: to check, because.
- 30:25Speaker 2: I'm not sure. Nope, nope, Sam's still with us.
- 30:28Speaker 1: There's some schizophrenia going on on the other end here, guys.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Just so, you know, I never know who I'm talking
- 30:33Speaker 1: to with this character.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Sam is here today, so, you know, we'll allow him usage.
- 30:44Speaker 2: We'll allow him usage of the vessel.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Is Sam there? Can I speak to him now?
- 30:50Speaker 2: I am here. Yeah, no, it's a... Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah,
- 30:56Speaker 2: Sam from Atlanta. Hey, what's going on? Really, the suburbs.
- 31:01Speaker 10: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 2: The suburbs.
- 31:06Speaker 1: Well, I mean, it's good that you brought that up
- 31:10Speaker 1: as well, because that all comes to tie together into
- 31:12Speaker 1: this week's episode. Yeah. Because if you go way back
- 31:17Speaker 1: in time, like a year ago, before the world was
- 31:20Speaker 1: falling apart, I came to your town. So we actually
- 31:24Speaker 1: sat in the same place.
- 31:26Speaker 2: It was just another time.
- 31:29Speaker 1: I was thinking today, I was like, that's kind of
- 31:31Speaker 1: like one of the... It's just such a great memory
- 31:34Speaker 1: now when I think back because... And what's so great
- 31:38Speaker 1: about it is what led to this discussion we're going
- 31:41Speaker 1: to have in the future. We were planning this movie
- 31:44Speaker 1: that we're going to talk about today over a year ago.
- 31:48Speaker 1: When I was heading out there, we were like, okay,
- 31:50Speaker 1: we can talk about a movie. What do you want
- 31:52Speaker 1: to talk about? So we brought up this movie we're
- 31:54Speaker 1: going to discuss. And then once we got there, we
- 31:58Speaker 1: got so engrossed in hanging out in the park and
- 32:02Speaker 1: having our movie discussions that we didn't even get to
- 32:05Speaker 1: the movie we originally planned to talk about.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Not at all. Not at all. There was too much
- 32:09Speaker 2: going on. There was a new Tarantino movie that just
- 32:11Speaker 2: came out that had to be unpacked. There was Dragon
- 32:15Speaker 2: Con that had to be unpacked. And, you know, just
- 32:20Speaker 2: talking about... Well, I had to get through the... oral
- 32:25Speaker 2: history of movie meltdown before you even roll.
- 32:28Speaker 1: That was most of the day really sort of like
- 32:32Speaker 1: but what about that one time and like so i
- 32:34Speaker 1: was like yeah okay uh so we we got through
- 32:37Speaker 1: a lot of that and we worked out a lot
- 32:38Speaker 1: of the the questions right i'm sure you still have
- 32:42Speaker 1: many questions so it's fine.
- 32:43Speaker 2: All right but yeah.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Then we we kind of we we ended up hillside
- 32:49Speaker 1: in the middle of the park there looking down on
- 32:52Speaker 1: all these people out there being happy and playing sports
- 32:56Speaker 1: and walking dogs and whatever all they were doing. And
- 32:59Speaker 1: it was a nice day. I got to say, I, I, I,
- 33:02Speaker 1: Look back and really enjoy that day we had.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, it was cool. And it was like
- 33:07Speaker 2: healthy human being stuff that people were doing. And we
- 33:12Speaker 2: were a part of that scene.
- 33:14Speaker 1: We weren't actually involved in it. In our usual way,
- 33:18Speaker 1: we both were just like, okay, let's go sit way
- 33:21Speaker 1: over here on the side.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 33:22Speaker 1: We'll watch the humans, but we're going to leave it
- 33:25Speaker 1: at that. We don't want to get all up in
- 33:27Speaker 1: their business.
- 33:27Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, no.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Except the one guy you like looking for weed approached us.
- 33:33Speaker 1: But other than that, like we, we stayed away from
- 33:36Speaker 1: people and like just kind of hung out and did
- 33:38Speaker 1: our own thing, which is very us.
- 33:40Speaker 6: Right. Right.
- 33:41Speaker 2: No, no, Mark, you gotta, you gotta comment about society.
- 33:44Speaker 2: You gotta, you gotta be from a safe distance.
- 33:48Speaker 1: That's what I found. I feel like what I felt myself,
- 33:53Speaker 1: you can't be too involved in it or you can't
- 33:55Speaker 1: really sit back and make any assessments. Like you gotta,
- 33:58Speaker 1: You got to be at a distance just enough to
- 34:01Speaker 1: see what's going on and be able to kind of
- 34:03Speaker 1: piece everything together. And that's also the approach to movies
- 34:07Speaker 1: for me. It's like we watch them, but then we
- 34:10Speaker 1: get together and sort of rehash them. And we step
- 34:13Speaker 1: back a little bit and look at not just what's
- 34:15Speaker 1: going on on screen, but like what was happening behind
- 34:18Speaker 1: the scenes or what was going on in the world
- 34:20Speaker 1: when this movie came out. And so like, again, I
- 34:22Speaker 1: try to look at everything that way, specifically when we
- 34:25Speaker 1: sit down and talk about movies. Like, I feel like
- 34:26Speaker 1: that's also a good approach is just sort of, step
- 34:29Speaker 1: back and see what all came together to make this
- 34:32Speaker 1: movie or certain movies, a thing and how they fit
- 34:36Speaker 1: into our crazy society.
- 34:38Speaker 2: So, yeah, my, my theory is you haven't really seen
- 34:41Speaker 2: a movie a, uh, until you've seen it in the
- 34:44Speaker 2: theater and B until you've had a three hour conversation
- 34:47Speaker 2: about it.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Um, The first one I'll say, what's a theater? I
- 34:54Speaker 1: don't know what you're talking about. I have this TV
- 34:57Speaker 1: thing and I watch stuff on that. I haven't been
- 34:59Speaker 1: to a theater. It's back in the olden times.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Here's another divergent. I went to one yesterday. We can
- 35:08Speaker 2: talk about it real quick. I'll just give you.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Another besmirgent?
- 35:13Speaker 2: Another besmirgent. I'll tell you. I'll try to keep it
- 35:16Speaker 2: down to three things, okay? About... to a movie theater
- 35:19Speaker 2: in the middle of a quarantine outbreak, okay?
- 35:22Speaker 3: All right.
- 35:23Speaker 2: I went last night. First time, first movie I've seen
- 35:25Speaker 2: in a theater since Parasite, all right? And so... I
- 35:30Speaker 2: did see that one.
- 35:31Speaker 1: In the theater right before.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 35:33Speaker 1: Before the shutdown times.
- 35:34Speaker 2: That's right. That's right. Exactly. And so that was my
- 35:38Speaker 2: last good memory there. So I go to one of those....
- 35:43Speaker 1: My last good memory.
- 35:45Speaker 2: Right, right, right. So, you know, That is the longest
- 35:49Speaker 2: I've been not going to a movie theater since I
- 35:52Speaker 2: started driving, you know, since I was like 16 or something,
- 35:55Speaker 2: you know. So movies, going to a movie every week
- 35:59Speaker 2: or every other week or, you know, twice a month
- 36:02Speaker 2: or whatever, you know, you know, especially working at a theater,
- 36:07Speaker 2: you know, you just went all the time. It's a
- 36:09Speaker 2: very much a part of my natural cadence in life.
- 36:14Speaker 2: And if I don't have it, you know, it is
- 36:16Speaker 2: like a drug withdrawal. And so going to a movie
- 36:21Speaker 2: theater last night was like this amazing, beautiful, wonderful experience.
- 36:27Speaker 2: And what's great about movies in quarantine is, sure, you
- 36:30Speaker 2: got to wear a mask if you're not chomping on popcorn.
- 36:33Speaker 2: But if you buy your tickets online, they block off
- 36:38Speaker 2: a little parameter around you. So now, if you go to.
- 36:43Speaker 1: All I've ever wanted.
- 36:45Speaker 2: All I've ever... It's like they said, John Conkle, you
- 36:48Speaker 2: redesigned the world. And in my dreams, I woke up
- 36:54Speaker 2: and this world materialized. And now, if you go to
- 36:58Speaker 2: one of those annoying, like we did, one of those
- 37:00Speaker 2: annoying ones where they serve you food, you don't have
- 37:03Speaker 2: to be listening to the guy chopping on a steak
- 37:06Speaker 2: sandwich while you're trying to watch the movie. It's like
- 37:09Speaker 2: they're over there. And you're over here. And it was
- 37:13Speaker 2: always weird when you go to one of those places
- 37:15Speaker 2: that you pre-bought your tickets and they would like, somebody
- 37:20Speaker 2: pre-bought their ticket right next to you or something like that.
- 37:22Speaker 2: I'm like, why did you do that?
- 37:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I got to, I really liked the
- 37:27Speaker 1: whole pick your seat kind of thing that came. Again,
- 37:31Speaker 1: I hadn't been going to those kind of theaters up
- 37:33Speaker 1: until like maybe the last year and a half before
- 37:36Speaker 1: everything shut down. But I found like one opened in
- 37:39Speaker 1: the area pretty close to me. And like, I didn't
- 37:42Speaker 1: even have to wait till I get there. I could
- 37:44Speaker 1: go online, buy the tickets, pick the seat from home.
- 37:46Speaker 1: I was like, oh, this is great. So my only
- 37:49Speaker 1: thing was I would always, there would still be like,
- 37:53Speaker 1: you know there's the good zone where everybody wants to
- 37:55Speaker 1: be anyway right and that's the one everybody would be
- 37:58Speaker 1: so i would still essentially have to pick a seat
- 38:00Speaker 1: next to somebody else right because i'm like i'm not
- 38:03Speaker 1: picking this one up in the front corner here that's
- 38:05Speaker 1: gonna suck so like i yeah i still ended up
- 38:08Speaker 1: having to pick a seat somewhat close to another human
- 38:11Speaker 1: which is what i'm looking for but i do like
- 38:14Speaker 1: just being able to pick it and then not worry
- 38:16Speaker 1: about getting there I used to like, you'd get there early.
- 38:19Speaker 11: You gotta stake out your good seat, but like, you
- 38:23Speaker 11: don't have to worry about that now.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it used to be survival of the fittest.
- 38:28Speaker 2: You had to get there early, and you had to
- 38:31Speaker 2: be early in line if you wanted that seat that
- 38:34Speaker 2: you know you want.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Now it's survival of the richest.
- 38:39Speaker 2: That's right.
- 38:39Speaker 1: Do you have enough money to buy it in advance?
- 38:42Speaker 1: Do you have enough money for the extra little bit
- 38:44Speaker 1: of charge? Granted, depending on the theaters, it's a little
- 38:47Speaker 1: more charge on some of them, but... It's a little
- 38:49Speaker 1: extra upcharge to buy it ahead of time with pick
- 38:52Speaker 1: your seat. And if you're willing to do that, the
- 38:54Speaker 1: convenience of having extra cash.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Right, right. You have the credit card and the this
- 39:00Speaker 2: and the that, and can you figure out all their little,
- 39:02Speaker 2: you know, tricks and jump, you know, to do it.
- 39:05Speaker 2: But if you can do that, it's great. But now
- 39:09Speaker 2: it's even better because there's a perimeter around you. And,
- 39:11Speaker 2: you know, and I would say, yeah, So I'm coughing.
- 39:21Speaker 2: I go out to a movie theater and I'm coughing.
- 39:25Speaker 5: Nice.
- 39:26Speaker 2: I've been sick for a week. So, you know, whatever.
- 39:28Speaker 2: um so sorry.
- 39:29Speaker 1: Sick with the virus sick was sick love sick i
- 39:33Speaker 1: don't know i i also uh this past episode um
- 39:39Speaker 1: essentially us accused my co-host of having a zombie virus
- 39:43Speaker 1: so nice For anybody who wants an update, I checked
- 39:46Speaker 1: with her yesterday. She's okay. She doesn't have a zombie virus.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Thank God.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Or any other quarantine virus. She got okay.
- 39:53Speaker 2: Yeah, there we go.
- 39:55Speaker 1: But I like, essentially, as soon as anyone's like, zombie!
- 40:00Speaker 1: Immediately jumping to the fact that they're infected with some
- 40:02Speaker 1: horrible virus.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Absolutely. If it was a movie, if you have a
- 40:07Speaker 2: little cough in a movie, that means either you're terminally
- 40:09Speaker 2: ill or, yeah, you've been infected by the zombies. Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:15Speaker 2: so quarantine around you is great um the screen if
- 40:20Speaker 2: you're used to watching your tv the screen is bigger
- 40:23Speaker 2: and more beautiful than you remembered it to be um
- 40:28Speaker 2: we saw it in some uh some dolby super sound
- 40:32Speaker 2: uh theater which was like you could hear every little
- 40:36Speaker 2: crinkle and crinkle and It was kind of like being
- 40:41Speaker 2: back in the shooting range because the gun was so loud.
- 40:46Speaker 2: I would say it was great and the music was
- 40:49Speaker 2: so great in the movie that I was kind of like,
- 40:51Speaker 2: what's that? Unfortunately, the only bad thing was we went
- 40:56Speaker 2: to go see Tenet and I guess I'm the one
- 40:59Speaker 2: person in the world that doesn't like that movie because
- 41:02Speaker 2: that movie was... I'm not going to say much about
- 41:05Speaker 2: it other than Are you?
- 41:07Speaker 1: Because I thought it was already getting such a backlash
- 41:09Speaker 1: of people just sick of hearing about it coming out.
- 41:13Speaker 1: It was going to be the movie that kicked off
- 41:16Speaker 1: the coming back to the movies and like it had
- 41:18Speaker 1: so much built around it. I was just like, yeah
- 41:20Speaker 1: this thing's never gonna make like it it doesn't have
- 41:22Speaker 1: a chance of people like caring as much as the
- 41:25Speaker 1: hype has been built up around it just because it's
- 41:28Speaker 1: a movie and it's coming back to a theater and
- 41:31Speaker 1: like right yeah there's no way it can live up
- 41:32Speaker 1: to that height.
- 41:33Speaker 2: No no well the critics have been just like falling
- 41:37Speaker 2: all over themselves you know it's like kind of like
- 41:39Speaker 2: an eight a 7.98 you know, on IMDb. So people
- 41:44Speaker 2: are liking it, but the critics are giving it about
- 41:46Speaker 2: an seven or an eight. And I'm like going like,
- 41:49Speaker 2: oh man, no, I thought it was more like a three,
- 41:51Speaker 2: you know? So I mean, but.
- 41:55Speaker 1: But the experience was amazing.
- 41:57Speaker 2: The experience was amazing. And sometimes, what I kind of
- 42:03Speaker 2: like about it, two things.
- 42:04Speaker 6: All right.
- 42:04Speaker 2: And then we'll get to the movie we're here to
- 42:06Speaker 2: talk about. It's fine.
- 42:09Speaker 1: We know how we are.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Okay. Exactly. Two things. Number one, it's like, I love, like,
- 42:18Speaker 2: it's just man's folly to see this many people working
- 42:23Speaker 2: so hard. And yeah, being so certain about something and
- 42:29Speaker 2: then just being wrong about it, you know? You know,
- 42:33Speaker 2: the movie just doesn't work.
- 42:35Speaker 1: Is this within the plot of the movie or you're
- 42:37Speaker 1: now going into the making of the movie, them having
- 42:41Speaker 1: such faith in it?
- 42:43Speaker 2: Making of the movie.
- 42:44Speaker 1: I mean, there's a perfect tie-in to what we're going
- 42:48Speaker 1: to talk about.
- 42:50Speaker 3: Perfect, perfect.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Because this movie and the movie we're going to talk about,
- 42:54Speaker 2: very similar. It's like... everybody's so certain that what they're
- 42:59Speaker 2: doing is going to be good and they're working so
- 43:03Speaker 2: hard to make it. And when it's just all said
- 43:07Speaker 2: and done, movies are what makes a good movie or not.
- 43:12Speaker 2: I think nobody knows. And so it's just like, it just,
- 43:16Speaker 2: it doesn't matter how hard you work on something. It, it, it,
- 43:20Speaker 2: it either clicks on or it doesn't click on, you know?
- 43:24Speaker 2: And it's like, Building Frankenstein's monster. And then you've like
- 43:29Speaker 2: got all the pieces together. Then you shoot it with lightning.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Either it gets up and walks around or it doesn't.
- 43:34Speaker 2: And it's like, so it's just like watching Tenet last
- 43:37Speaker 2: night was just like watching these people at the top
- 43:41Speaker 2: of their game all working so hard. you know i
- 43:46Speaker 2: think it took him five years to write it and
- 43:48Speaker 2: you can tell because i mean he was so far
- 43:50Speaker 2: up his own ass in this one that you know it's.
- 43:54Speaker 1: An inception level of being up his own.
- 43:56Speaker 2: Ass inception is like nothing inception is like a death
- 44:03Speaker 2: wish movie he's.
- 44:04Speaker 1: Four levels up his own ass at this.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Point so far up so far up i mean he
- 44:09Speaker 2: it's almost like just It's like the snake eating the tail.
- 44:13Speaker 2: It's this never-ending loop of just like, you know, his
- 44:17Speaker 2: own brilliance. I mean, but, you know, he was certain.
- 44:22Speaker 2: I mean, he was sure. He knew. He had a vision.
- 44:25Speaker 2: And he went out and he convinced all these people
- 44:27Speaker 2: to give him so much money and all these people
- 44:30Speaker 2: to get on the same page. And they did everything right. Except,
- 44:34Speaker 2: you know, just with Inception... you can kind of follow it.
- 44:39Speaker 2: And for me, like, it was just like, huh?
- 44:43Speaker 1: Huh? I mean, that was even watching the trailer. I'm like,
- 44:46Speaker 1: this already looks kind of convoluted. So, like, expanding it by,
- 44:51Speaker 1: I'm guessing, a good two and a half hours or
- 44:53Speaker 1: more is probably not going to make it any easier
- 44:56Speaker 1: to piece together what you're going for here.
- 44:58Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, no, exactly. And people talk exposition. There are
- 45:02Speaker 2: these exposition scenes in this movie that are so long
- 45:05Speaker 2: and so loud and so, like, quickly spoken and you've
- 45:09Speaker 2: got to hang on to, you got to get every
- 45:11Speaker 2: little bit of it or you're not going to know
- 45:13Speaker 2: what's going on. And, and the sound mix is weird.
- 45:16Speaker 2: So they're like, and there's like all this incidental music
- 45:21Speaker 2: sound going on around you. And then they're like, so like, wow,
- 45:24Speaker 2: I have no idea what's going on. I have zero
- 45:26Speaker 2: idea what's going on. I'm just sort of watching the
- 45:28Speaker 2: pretty pictures go by, which is fine for a while,
- 45:30Speaker 2: but after two and a half hours, there's no emotional
- 45:34Speaker 2: hook to it or no story that you're following.
- 45:37Speaker 4: No.
- 45:39Speaker 2: But let's loop it back around. Yes, they were certain
- 45:45Speaker 2: that they were making a good movie or they were
- 45:47Speaker 2: making the best movie they could or they were all
- 45:49Speaker 2: 100% in and put everything on the line kind of
- 45:53Speaker 2: like the guys in the movie that we're supposed to
- 45:57Speaker 2: be talking about.
- 46:00Speaker 1: And we will. I will say, though, that's something I've
- 46:04Speaker 1: learned from I guess learned as I went along in
- 46:07Speaker 1: this process, because I, I like most movie geeks, you
- 46:11Speaker 1: get very, like, it just sort of flips a switch.
- 46:14Speaker 1: You're like, this movie is awesome. Or that movie is stupid.
- 46:16Speaker 1: Or this is some sort of mainstream piece of trash.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Like geeks get so set in their ways. But over
- 46:22Speaker 1: the years, I've talked to so many people that worked
- 46:25Speaker 1: on movies and you realize what, an important part they are,
- 46:30Speaker 1: but still just a cog in the wheel of getting
- 46:32Speaker 1: these massive things made. So like there are times when
- 46:36Speaker 1: I'm talking to somebody and I'm like, well, I mean,
- 46:38Speaker 1: I guess I have to talk about this movie because
- 46:40Speaker 1: it's a huge budget thing that you worked on. But
- 46:43Speaker 1: I'm like, I think this Transformers movie is kind of terrible,
- 46:47Speaker 1: but you worked on it. So I'm like, so it's
- 46:50Speaker 1: always such a weird line. But then as I went along,
- 46:52Speaker 1: I was like, well, sometimes even they know that it's
- 46:55Speaker 1: not great. And like, they're just showing up and doing
- 46:58Speaker 1: their best job, but they already like, don't like what
- 47:01Speaker 1: they're working on. So like, you have people doing special
- 47:05Speaker 1: effects for a pirates of the Caribbean movie that nobody
- 47:07Speaker 1: cares about, or, you know, visual effects for a transformers movie.
- 47:11Speaker 1: And I'm just like, so I've, I've learned to kind
- 47:14Speaker 1: of appreciate the work involved for these people and, and
- 47:19Speaker 1: put the end result, like in a whole nother place,
- 47:21Speaker 1: just sort of take it and put it over here.
- 47:23Speaker 1: So we can, again, like just sort of expanding that
- 47:26Speaker 1: talking about movies things so much so that you don't
- 47:28Speaker 1: even worry about the end product. You're just like, what
- 47:31Speaker 1: was your experience? You know, what is your job? What is,
- 47:33Speaker 1: what is this part of the experience like for you
- 47:37Speaker 1: versus eventually we'll sit down and watch the end result.
- 47:40Speaker 1: But like, to me, moviemaking is such a huge ordeal,
- 47:44Speaker 1: at least on big budget movies that like you get
- 47:47Speaker 1: some things that don't even connect along the way. They
- 47:49Speaker 1: don't even have anything to do with each other.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 47:52Speaker 3: No, no.
- 47:54Speaker 2: And you know, has this movie not been made, not
- 47:56Speaker 2: been made, though it might not work for me as
- 47:59Speaker 2: a movie, I would say, you know, everybody got, you know,
- 48:03Speaker 2: a job out of it. And, but also, but had
- 48:07Speaker 2: that movie not been made, we wouldn't have like this
- 48:09Speaker 2: amazing soundtrack. The soundtrack to Tenet is just great. And
- 48:13Speaker 2: so even during when I wasn't enjoying the movie, I
- 48:16Speaker 2: was like going like, man, you know, this movie does
- 48:19Speaker 2: give us this great music, you know, to, so you can,
- 48:23Speaker 2: you can parse it out and stuff, you know, what, what,
- 48:26Speaker 2: what worked, what didn't work, you know?
- 48:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I think that's really cool, too, is along the
- 48:31Speaker 1: way you find bits and pieces of like, oh, well,
- 48:33Speaker 1: I really like this part or this scene or even
- 48:37Speaker 1: like behind the scenes. It's like this movie was terrible,
- 48:40Speaker 1: but these two people met each other making this terrible
- 48:42Speaker 1: movie and then they ended up getting married. So they
- 48:45Speaker 1: have a whole life that came out of this movie
- 48:47Speaker 1: that maybe the movie didn't work. But on the timeline
- 48:50Speaker 1: of life, like it was kind of important. Yeah.
- 48:53Speaker 2: No, here's what. Here's one movie kind of like that,
- 48:57Speaker 2: Basket Case 3.
- 49:01Speaker 1: You know, that's what I was thinking when we brought
- 49:04Speaker 1: this up.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Yeah. So Basket Case 3, a lot of people came
- 49:11Speaker 2: down from New York to Georgia to make Basket Case 3.
- 49:16Speaker 2: And some of the effects guys never left. because they
- 49:20Speaker 2: all fell in love with local girls.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Uh-huh. And now, coincidentally, there's this huge industry in your city.
- 49:29Speaker 2: That's right. And they're probably right in the middle. I think... Now...
- 49:36Speaker 2: I'm not a historian, but I think, like, the Netherworld
- 49:40Speaker 2: haunted house might be connected to somebody who came down from...
- 49:46Speaker 2: to work on Best Case 3, and then... That may
- 49:51Speaker 2: be just me making stuff up. But, anyway, I do
- 49:55Speaker 2: know that, like, certain people started their lives here in
- 49:58Speaker 2: Georgia because of the people they met. And, you know, so... whatever, what,
- 50:06Speaker 2: that's case three, whatever. It's a, it's, it is a masterpiece,
- 50:10Speaker 2: but other than that, it, it also put these people's
- 50:14Speaker 2: lives in a totally different, um, to direct, to trajectory.
- 50:19Speaker 6: She knows she's.
- 50:23Speaker 1: More than just a little misunderstood.
- 50:26Speaker 8: She has trouble acting normal when she's nervous.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 50:35Speaker 8: Carving out our names. Around here, we all look the same.
- 50:49Speaker 8: Around here, we talk like liars. But we sacrifice like lambs. Flips,
- 51:06Speaker 8: the new snack sensation. Flips.
- 51:28Speaker 3: The crispy, crunchy chip with a zesty, tantalizing flavor all
- 51:32Speaker 3: its own. And an airy lightness that's so satisfying, but
- 51:38Speaker 3: not filling. We make them fresh right here, so you
- 51:43Speaker 3: can treat yourself to a cup or a bag full
- 51:46Speaker 3: of America's newest chip-type snack while you're watching the show.
- 51:51Speaker 3: Flip's Deliciously Different.
- 51:59Speaker 8: Satan's work is done. 666, the number of the beast.
- 52:03Speaker 12: Sacrifice is.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Going on tonight. So, guess what happened the other day?
- 52:14Speaker 5: What?
- 52:14Speaker 4: I have no idea.
- 52:16Speaker 1: I went into a store. I know it's hard to
- 52:19Speaker 1: go out into the world, but I actually went into
- 52:21Speaker 1: a place, and I brought my goods up to the register,
- 52:25Speaker 1: and they went to ring me up, And damned if
- 52:28Speaker 1: it didn't say 666.
- 52:28Speaker 5: Ooh.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Fantastic. And the woman behind the counter went, oh, God. Like,
- 52:35Speaker 1: she kind of responded. And I was like, nah, that
- 52:39Speaker 1: seems about right. It's fine. So it's obvious that we're
- 52:43Speaker 1: in tune with the dark forces of the universe.
- 52:47Speaker 2: Clearly.
- 52:48Speaker 1: And, you know, one of those things is probably because
- 52:52Speaker 1: we're always rolling 20-sided die. We can't stop. So I,
- 52:58Speaker 1: you know, as you may or may not know, each
- 53:01Speaker 1: time we roll the die, we open up a portal
- 53:04Speaker 1: to some sort of demon dimension and evil forces come
- 53:07Speaker 1: and go and do as they please. So just if you,
- 53:10Speaker 1: if you didn't know that at home, this is one
- 53:13Speaker 1: of the things we're doing now is opening up demon portals.
- 53:17Speaker 1: And we also kind of watch horror movies, but this
- 53:19Speaker 1: is one of the benefits, you know, fringe benefits that
- 53:24Speaker 1: comes with, you know, Setting up a show that rolls
- 53:27Speaker 1: die and brings in horror movies and evil forces.
- 53:31Speaker 4: It's the whole reason I joined.
- 53:34Speaker 1: And you too can join and be part of this
- 53:36Speaker 1: evil madness. So go to MovieMeltdown.com. Click on that link
- 53:41Speaker 1: right there at the top that says join the horror club.
- 53:43Speaker 1: And you can enjoy all the fun and games that
- 53:46Speaker 1: comes along with the demon dimensions that we're opening up.
- 53:50Speaker 1: And we talk about horror movies on occasion.
- 53:53Speaker 4: Sometimes. So, Brian, what's the minimum to join up for that?
- 53:58Speaker 1: Two bucks.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Two bucks. Two American dollars and you can get all
- 54:02Speaker 4: this and more.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Two measly dollars and you can have access to all
- 54:07Speaker 1: of the episodes. Now, granted, you can throw some more
- 54:10Speaker 1: at us and we'll come up with some other crazy things,
- 54:12Speaker 1: but you get two dollars in and you can listen
- 54:16Speaker 1: to every one of the bonus episodes, all horror related,
- 54:19Speaker 1: all just for you. And on top of that, our
- 54:22Speaker 1: little promo we've got going now is They previously mentioned
- 54:26Speaker 1: rolling of the die. If you join up, you get
- 54:29Speaker 1: to give us a movie to put on the list,
- 54:32Speaker 1: and then we'll roll the die and potentially get to
- 54:35Speaker 1: your movie down the line. We never know when. That's
- 54:37Speaker 1: part of the evil forces that live inside the 20-sided die.
- 54:41Speaker 1: But you can be part of that if you just
- 54:43Speaker 1: join the club, and then you can get your movie
- 54:46Speaker 1: on the list and listen as we crack open the
- 54:50Speaker 1: thin little membrane that's containing evil on the other side
- 54:53Speaker 1: of the... The void. Each week, we're poking at it
- 54:57Speaker 1: with a stick. You can be part of that magic.
- 55:01Speaker 1: Evil magic. Dark magic. For two dollars.
- 55:09Speaker 4: You are probably just going to throw that money in
- 55:11Speaker 4: the garbage anyway.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Probably. I mean, you don't need anything to do with
- 55:16Speaker 1: it now. You can't go anywhere. You can't do anything functional.
- 55:19Speaker 1: I was lucky to come up with enough to scrape
- 55:22Speaker 1: together to get $ 6. 66 worth of goods because I don't
- 55:26Speaker 1: go anywhere. I don't do anything now. It's the wonderful
- 55:28Speaker 1: world we live in. So now you've got that extra
- 55:31Speaker 1: two bucks to throw towards something important like this show.
- 55:37Speaker 1: That did actually happen. It was at a Walgreens. And
- 55:42Speaker 1: the woman was like, oh, Lord.
- 55:44Speaker 4: That's happened to me a handful of times. And I'm
- 55:47Speaker 4: always like, fantastic. I was somewhere. I don't remember what
- 55:51Speaker 4: it was. And the lady actually told me like when
- 55:55Speaker 4: the amount rang up, she's like, Oh, we'll just round
- 55:58Speaker 4: this up to six 70. I was like, you can
- 56:03Speaker 4: round it down. I was like, but you're not going
- 56:04Speaker 4: to rip me off just because the, you know, cash
- 56:07Speaker 4: register rang up an evil quote unquote evil number.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Satan says you give me this for free.
- 56:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. There you go.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Well, there you go. You, you don't have to, round
- 56:19Speaker 1: up if you want, you can just leave it an
- 56:21Speaker 1: even two bucks.
- 56:21Speaker 5: So there you go.
- 56:24Speaker 1: You want to round it up to a hundred dollars,
- 56:26Speaker 1: feel free. I have a, a God level set up
- 56:29Speaker 1: just for crazy people that want to throw a hundred
- 56:31Speaker 1: dollars at us, but you don't have to do that.
- 56:34Speaker 1: We're really looking for like crazy millionaires that want to
- 56:37Speaker 1: just throw money at something weird and we are those weirdos.
- 56:42Speaker 1: So it's certainly an option if you're, if you're looking
- 56:45Speaker 1: for that, but assuming you're not a millionaire. Two bucks
- 56:48Speaker 1: is all you need.
- 56:50Speaker 4: And we will take your $ 6. 66 if you have it.
- 56:53Speaker 1: That's true. If you want to throw that in there
- 56:56Speaker 1: every month just to get on board with the evil,
- 56:59Speaker 1: feel free. We are more than happy to go with
- 57:02Speaker 1: that evil number, unlike that lady behind the counter.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Well, let's say you buy something for $ 3.
- 57:08Speaker 2: 34.
- 57:08Speaker 4: Am I doing this math right? I don't know if
- 57:10Speaker 4: I am or not.
- 57:13Speaker 1: I don't bother with math.
- 57:14Speaker 4: Well, let's say your change that comes back for whatever
- 57:16Speaker 4: reason is $ 6. 66 and you're scared to death of what's
- 57:20Speaker 4: going to happen. You send it to us and you
- 57:22Speaker 4: get all this great stuff.
- 57:24Speaker 1: There you go. We're saving your soul. Yeah. The only
- 57:27Speaker 1: hope for you is to give us money so that
- 57:29Speaker 1: you can go on to some sort of afterlife that
- 57:32Speaker 1: you will enjoy as opposed to the evil forces that
- 57:35Speaker 1: live within our episodes.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Turned so televangelist.
- 57:41Speaker 1: Get out your pocketbooks you know that you want to
- 57:44Speaker 1: give that's what we're looking for some sort of demon
- 57:52Speaker 1: televangelist it's the ultimate level we're going for for this
- 58:00Speaker 1: so go to movie meltdown.com click on the horror club
- 58:02Speaker 1: link on the right side of the page and join
- 58:04Speaker 1: the club With your help, we can keep this 20-sided
- 58:07Speaker 1: die rolling.
- 58:17Speaker 8: Hi, you're listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 58:26Speaker 1: This is Patty Mullen.
- 58:27Speaker 8: Want a date? Going out? Looking for some action? Need
- 58:33Speaker 8: some company? Have fun.
- 58:46Speaker 13: Just when you thought it was safe to open the basket...
- 58:52Speaker 13: The makers of Basket Case 1 and 2, Brain Damage
- 58:55Speaker 13: and Frankenhooker, bring you the continuing tale of brotherly love
- 58:59Speaker 13: in Basket Case 3. Dwayne and Belial are back, and
- 59:04Speaker 13: there have been a few little changes. I'm gonna be
- 59:07Speaker 13: an uncle. Sit back and hold on.
- 59:10Speaker 3: On tight.
- 59:10Speaker 13: This is one road trip you'll never forget.
- 59:13Speaker 2: I am 23 page five. I go.
- 59:17Speaker 13: Granny Ruth and the gang are heading south to meet
- 59:20Speaker 13: up with some old friends.
- 59:21Speaker 2: Bye, sugar.
- 59:24Speaker 13: And old family. They've come together to witness the miracle
- 59:31Speaker 13: of childbirth. The stork has landed, bringing a bundle of
- 59:36Speaker 13: joy to some.
- 59:37Speaker 2: Really?
- 59:38Speaker 13: And a bundle of cash to others.
- 59:40Speaker 1: We came out here to get a million dollars, and that's.
- 59:42Speaker 2: Just what we're going to get.
- 59:43Speaker 4: He's a freak, Daddy.
- 59:44Speaker 5: His brother's a monster. What the hell are they?
- 59:47Speaker 2: These must be his puppies or something.
- 59:49Speaker 13: This is one plan the sheriff should have aborted. Because
- 59:54Speaker 13: Dad is mad. And he's taking no prisoners. The little
- 1:00:05Speaker 13: town of Peachtree Valley is going to have a showdown.
- 1:00:09Speaker 5: You give me Belial, I give you the baby.
- 1:00:13Speaker 13: For Dwayne, Belial, Granny Ruth, and the rest of the family,
- 1:00:16Speaker 13: this is the mother of all battles. The Brantley twins
- 1:00:22Speaker 13: are back, and getting even was never better.
- 1:00:26Speaker 5: This is going to be some family.
- 1:00:28Speaker 13: Basket Case 3, it's time to build a bigger basket.
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: Over and over, I tried to prove my love to you.
- 1:00:36Speaker 8: Over and over, what more can I do?
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: Over and over, my friends say.
- 1:00:50Speaker 14: I'm a fool.
- 1:00:51Speaker 5: But over, over and over.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: I'll be a fool for you.
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: Cause you've got personality.
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: What?
- 1:01:01Speaker 8: Personality. Sure.
- 1:01:03Speaker 2: Personality.
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: My?
- 1:01:05Speaker 8: Personality.
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: Sure.
- 1:01:07Speaker 8: Personality. No. Personality.
- 1:01:09Speaker 5: And look, you've got a great big heart.
- 1:01:20Speaker 15: Well again that's just sort of perfectly leading us in
- 1:01:32Speaker 15: here because that that's what you find is like there's
- 1:01:34Speaker 15: an entire another world going on on the.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: Other side of the camera it's like you know the
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: These people that showed up to make Basket Case 3,
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: you know, you don't see them on screen when you
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: watch it now. But, you know, they all showed up.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: They had a job to do. They had lives going
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: on and relationships going on behind the scenes that nobody
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: ever sees. That's arguably equally as interesting as what's going
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: on in front of the camera in a lot of movies.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: That's what leads us to this week's movie.
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: There we go.
- 1:02:04Speaker 13: Awesome.
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: Good job. Good job.
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: Let me break it down for you here. This week's
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Silver Theater feature is Demon Lover Diary. The year is 1980.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: The director is Joel DeMont. And the plot, according to IMDb,
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: and are we calling this guy, is his last name Krennis?
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: Let's go Krennis.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Krennis?
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: The plot, according to IMDb, The film chronicles filmmaker Joel DeMott,
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: significant other slash film partner Jeff Krennis, and filmmaker Mark
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Rance as they head to Michigan to make a low-budget
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: horror film. That doesn't spoil anything for you, so now
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: we'll say, spoiler alert, we're going to ruin most of
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: what goes on in this movie. It's hard to, you know, um,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: spoil a documentary you would think, but it turns out
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: there's some weird things in this movie you did not
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: see coming. So if you haven't seen it, go seek
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: it out. Um, it's not, I do want to give
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: people a heads up. It's not a flashy movie.
- 1:03:10Speaker 14: No, no.
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: If you're looking for a high definition copy of it,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: you probably ain't going to find one. So you're going
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: to have to deal with some, some, questionable visuals and
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: uh the audio you know you can hear things all
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: right it's fine you're probably not going to get a
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: super surround dolby mix but um if you're cool with
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: watching something uh at least it's like free on youtube
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: so you can you can go find yourself a version
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: of it on on the internets and watch it and
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: i feel like it's something that if you are a
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: a movie maker You need to watch this. Or if
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: you're considering, I think more importantly, if you're considering becoming
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: a filmmaker, this is where you need to start. Watch
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: this first and see if this is the kind of
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: thing you want to get into. Right. But yeah, just
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: like horror fans, like documentary fans, like it's got a
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: lot of different avenues that I think would appeal to people.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: But yeah, you definitely just have to know going in
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: that it's got some quality issues that are different from,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: you know, big budget movies. But yeah. That aside, go
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: seek it out. And we've given you the warning, so
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: we're going to spoil it from here on out.
- 1:04:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it looks like it was found. It's
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: like a dupe of a dupe of a VHS. You know,
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: I mean, they shot it on film, but I mean,
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: the copy that I got... It's about as good as
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: what you got on YouTube. And that was bought from,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: as a friend gave it to me and it was
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: like bought off like one of those DVD rip sites,
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: you know? And so it's, it's, you know, shot on film.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Well, that's what I was, that's one of the two
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: things I was going to ask. Number one is what
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: can you tell? I was trying to watch in the
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: mirror and see what she was shooting on. Was it,
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: 16 millimeter or like he was the other guys playing
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: around with like eight millimeter old school film cameras but
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: like i couldn't tell if that because it was sort
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: of like a rigged up thing that they did because
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: because it had audio too like i think they they
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: kind of created that camera that they used to make
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: this thing essentially i'm gonna.
- 1:05:18Speaker 2: Lean on i'm gonna lean towards I don't know. It's
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: a real square image. So I don't know. I'm going
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: to say, let's just, I'm not, I'm not an expert,
- 1:05:27Speaker 2: so I'm going to say, I'm going to say 16. Okay. Okay. But,
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: you know, so, you know, if you could get a,
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: if you watch it on a film print, I'm sure
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: it's great looking, but this is like somebody's copy of
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: somebody's VHS. So, you know, it's like.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: In a way almost adds something to it because you
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: do feel like you're watching something you weren't meant to
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: be seen.
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: So it kind of adds to it that it's a little,
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: it's a little grainier. It's a little like dark here
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: and there because it feels like that's the kind of
- 1:05:59Speaker 1: thing you're watching at this moment is like, Ooh, this
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: got leaked out and nobody's supposed to know I'm watching
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: this behind the scenes thing.
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: Right, right.
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, it's just such a raw, like, like
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: a raw, like something smuggled out of somebody's like closet
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: kind of, movie you know.
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Or found underneath the bed right.
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: In his shoebox yeah.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: If it if it didn't have like that's the thing
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: i'm like as i watched it i'm like well it
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: had to have been pieced together like because it almost
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: feels like it's just they found this footage literally found
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: footage movie except it has the narration which is obviously
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: after the fact right so it's like well no it
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: did get put together because there's like there's credits at
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: the end, there's narration, so I'm like, it got pieced
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: together after the fact, but that first run through, I
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: was just like, no, this just seems like they dug
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: out some footage that somebody didn't know they still had,
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: and we're watching it now, but you start to see, no,
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: it is a pieced together film that the director eventually,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: I'm assuming, went back and made what they could out
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: of their footage, so.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: No, what I think is great about it is that
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: it is made by real quote filmmakers and these real
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: filmmakers go to lend services to fake filmmakers i think
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: it is a really interesting aspect of the movie and
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: so so yeah just in brief it's these three new
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: york uh filmmakers That's their gig. They work professionally as
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: cameramen or sound people or whatever. I get the feeling
- 1:07:45Speaker 2: that they're freelance filmmakers.
- 1:07:48Speaker 10: And had done pretty well because you do, as our
- 1:07:53Speaker 10: director in this movie, not the one we're watching, but
- 1:07:57Speaker 10: the one within the movie, he keeps referencing.
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: How good our you know Jeff is like as far
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: as like being a camera operator or cinematographer or whatever,
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: like he keeps talking. So I think he had sort
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: of come from, because he also said he met him
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: at like the film festival.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: The Ann Arbor Film Festival, yeah.
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's like, you can tell he's worked on
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: like some art house kind of stuff. He's done some
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: probably low budget, but at least professional operations that made
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: it into film festivals versus what we're doing in the
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: movie shooting.
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: And so they get the.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: I guess they befriended Don Jackson says to, you know,
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: this guy, Hey, come help me make this movie for
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: a week. So Don worked at a speedometer factory in Michigan,
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: and he's going to take a week off work to
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: make this movie. And so he brings in his buddies.
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: There's this filmmaker from New York to help him shoot it.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: And Don is, co-directing it with this guy named Jerry
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: and Jerry is there and he's going to be like
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: they're going to co-direct it together but Jerry is there
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: because he lost his finger in an industrial accident at
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: the factory and he got some money for it and so.
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: Can I go ahead and like are we to assume
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: it was an accident or like it almost the way
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: he phrases it is almost like he purposely lost his
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: fingers so that he would get the money because they're
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: even talking about timing of it if he would have
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: done it then he would have got this but instead
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: he wanted to do the movie now so he took
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: his fingers off now so he could get eight grand
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: to make this crappy movie right right It seems very
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: much like he purposely planned to accidentally lose his fingers
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: so he could get insurance money.
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: It's hysterical. These guys are real fly-by-night, just film-passionate people
- 1:10:05Speaker 2: who are putting every... just trying to squeeze making a
- 1:10:11Speaker 2: movie into their lives. These guys from New York are
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: coming over to help them, but one of the most
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: interesting things I think about the movie is just the
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: culture differences between the people from New York and the
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: people from Michigan and how the people from New York
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: see the people from Michigan and how the people from
- 1:10:35Speaker 2: Michigan react to the filmmakers. And just that kind of,
- 1:10:42Speaker 2: I think it was like, at first, when I first
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: saw the movie, i was like i don't think i
- 1:10:51Speaker 2: was going like i don't think the uh filmmakers are
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: in on the joke here and that i think they're
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: very judgmental and uh you know the very first yeah
- 1:11:04Speaker 2: like like oh these you know trashy uh people that
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: were coming to help but also like they're also like
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: um One of the first lines is like, have you
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: ever been to the Midwest? And she's like, no, I've
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: never been to the Midwest. Kind of like they're going
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: to like the haunted kingdom, you know?
- 1:11:21Speaker 7: And so it's kind of like going, you know, I
- 1:11:26Speaker 7: think this movie is kind of like interesting in that
- 1:11:28Speaker 7: these filmmakers are kind of coming at it from a very,
- 1:11:32Speaker 7: we're legit, these people aren't.
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: And I don't even know that there was a joke
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: when they started the concept right I'm assuming when she
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: went to go film this like she just wanted to
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: shoot a behind the scenes documentary and it wasn't supposed
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: to be a joke until she got there and went
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: oh yeah I'm shooting this like suddenly she realized what
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: she was in the middle of and what she had
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: and I think that's why they pushed to keep filming
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: along the.
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: Way I agree I agree But I feel like... I
- 1:12:08Speaker 2: feel like... They... The filmmakers from New York, I think
- 1:12:16Speaker 2: they looked... I thought they came off looking bad in
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: the movie. You know, kind of like... I mean, everybody
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: kind of comes off looking bad. Yeah, kind of. Yeah,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: you know. But I was going like... You know, they
- 1:12:30Speaker 2: had the control of the film. They could have.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: Cut all that stuff out that made them look bad
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: so i was going like it's not really as quite
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: a hatchet job against don that you would think you
- 1:12:44Speaker 2: know they could have like cut out all the stuff
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: with them being rude to their parents and being just
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: kind of like you know trash in the room and
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: um yeah I don't think I.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Think everything Don does he does to himself because that's
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: the thing like it's not even like Don goes out
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: of his way to be a jerk to them it's
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: just like everything he says is insane and like so
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: full of himself that I'm like it's they're not setting
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: him up like every damning thing is coming directly out
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: of Don's mouth all the weird actions are things that
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: he initiates so like Everything Don does, he does to himself.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: Jerry as well, not as much. But yeah, it's like
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: it's so they, I don't really blame them for it.
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: The only part that they're guilty of is realizing what
- 1:13:34Speaker 1: a train wreck this was and being like, oh no,
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: I'm filming every minute of this.
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. What's great though is that when
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: they try to come to their senses and they're trying
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: to get out of it, Don, with his sheer force
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: of personality, keeps them looped in you know keeps them
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: locked in with his fast talk and his like uh
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: promise and bribery and bribery right going like i'll give
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: you a thousand dollars right now you just you just
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: set the fest f stops and uh you know light
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: it and i will do all the work and i'll
- 1:14:08Speaker 2: give you a thousand dollars and he's just like talking
- 1:14:10Speaker 2: so fast he's like intoxicating you go like i see
- 1:14:14Speaker 2: how this guy's getting this movie made and he's like
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: But he is like really full of himself. He's going like,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: I'm making a masterpiece. And he's more like, he's like
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: going with all the press. He's talking to reporters. He's
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: going a thousand miles an hour, like a man on fire.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: But it is also like kind of, as they talk
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: about kind of disorganized where it's a lot of effort
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: spewing out in a lot of directions. But, you know,
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: when it comes down to like the shoot, it's a
- 1:14:44Speaker 2: lot of like, not knowing, you know?
- 1:14:47Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Nobody's set up. Nobody, again, nobody can get everything together
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: at the same time. So it's like, he does all
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: this pre-planning that according to him for years, they've been
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: like doing pre-production stuff. But when it comes to the
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: day of, it's like just trying to get the actors
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: there and stuff's not set up. They can't do effect
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: shots or, you know, whatever, like the lighting's not ready.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Like everything, like, never coordinated at the same time so
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: it's like he's putting all this work in beforehand but
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: he doesn't really know how to do it right so
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: then it's just this big mess when they get there that.
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: Day right exactly exactly and he's just like using like
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: like girlfriends of the crew to be the actors. I
- 1:15:27Speaker 2: feel like.
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: That's a lot of independent movies.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: There's a lot of small budget things that are like,
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: we need a girl. Hey, that guy's got a girlfriend.
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: That's a novelty among geeks anyway.
- 1:15:40Speaker 11: So she's going to get cast as our lead female
- 1:15:44Speaker 11: because he's got a girlfriend.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: That's right. Oh my gosh. We can have a girl
- 1:15:46Speaker 2: in our movie. Yeah. Oh, this is amazing. Yeah. Production value.
- 1:15:50Speaker 2: Just like a real movie. Yeah.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Production value.
- 1:15:53Speaker 13: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: So yeah Don through this force of will is making
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: this thing happen and At the detriment of his entire life, basically.
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: That's the sad part is we like almost just that. Well,
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: I guess them shooting it because she's listing off everything.
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: But we, the audience, are kind of sitting there going, oh, man,
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: because you're like she's rattling off the fact that, you know,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: he's mortgaged his house and his car and everything. He's
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: his furniture. He's about to get fired from his job
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: that he skipped out on. Like everything is riding on
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: this movie, which would be great if you were watching
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: them make a masterpiece, but you're watching them make this
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: train wreck nonsense, want to be bad horror movie. So
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: you're just like, Oh man, in a good scenario you
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: don't make a movie off an independent film let alone
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: this garbage so it's like there's no way he's gonna
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: come out ahead in this deal he's about to lose everything.
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: Yeah that's so that's what's so captivating about it you're
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: like going like this guy believes and this guy is
- 1:17:05Speaker 2: like all in but you just know this is not
- 1:17:09Speaker 2: going to go well for him you know and um
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: And the filmmakers are going like, man, this is not
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: going to go well for you.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: But they don't even know. He is just a train
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: going off the tracks at that point. Because there's no
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: way to stop it. It's so far in. The most
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: they can do is pull themselves out of the scenario.
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: But it's not like you can talk sense to Don
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: and tell Jerry to quit doing this and don't waste
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: your time and your money. Because they're too dedicated to
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: finishing this thing that they don't see as a, as
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: a nightmare. Like they just are determined to make this
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: thing come together.
- 1:17:48Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: And yeah, I think that's part of it is like,
- 1:17:52Speaker 1: you can't even stop what's going on. The most they
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: can do is eventually remove themselves from the mess.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:17:59Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: Yeah. One of the, one of the two of my
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: favorite scenes of the movie is one where Jerry, the
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: co-director is sitting there at a coffee at a, at a,
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: at a table and going like, trying to describe the
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: scene to like these actresses, you know? And he's going like,
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: in this scene.
- 1:18:25Speaker 9: We begin with the feeling of complete frivolity. You know,
- 1:18:31Speaker 9: and these girls, they don't know what he's talking about.
- 1:18:33Speaker 9: But he's like so full of himself.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: Jerry's like more full of himself, I think, you know.
- 1:18:39Speaker 1: I just like, at some point he's essentially like, and
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: then it sucks the life out of everything. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: are you describing this movie you're making? Because it is
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: suck the life out of everyone involved.
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. Totally. And, um, It becomes cold.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: It's so cold.
- 1:18:58Speaker 2: These actors are not going to... I don't know what
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: you're thinking you're going to get out of these actors.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Especially since odds are they aren't even actors. They're just
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: random guys' girlfriends that showed up.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: Probably for me, I guess we're jumping ahead in the
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: movie here a little bit, but for me, the one
- 1:19:21Speaker 2: of the best scenes in the movie is like right
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: at the very end after everything has fallen apart and the,
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: you hear just the mom talking to them as they're,
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: as we'll get to as they're fleeing town. But the
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: mom is like, the mom character is so interesting, like
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: a character, but the mom person is like so interesting,
- 1:19:45Speaker 2: but they're fleeing town and the mom is like going,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: don't cause any trouble for Don or, or like, uh, you,
- 1:19:53Speaker 2: you're not running from Don. You're not running from this.
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: You know, I'm glad this movie's over. I'm glad I
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: hated this movie from the beginning. I mean, I know
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: I just ruined, spoiled the movie and everything, but it's,
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: it's all right.
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: Everybody should have already watched it. We told them.
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: But, uh, that, that cause it's only audio and it's
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: just like loose ends. Like we're kind of running through
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: the camera during that scene. I think that is that,
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: that scene is haunting.
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: And it's so, it's so weird because she's, she's so
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: like old timey, you know, it's like, she's so, she
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: looks like she's out of the fifties still, even though we're,
- 1:20:28Speaker 1: we're in mid seventies, but like, she looks like it.
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: She sounds like she's like from a small town in
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: the fifties or something. So she keeps saying like, I'm
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: proud this movie's over, which I'm like, that's even a
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: weird way to phrase that. But then on top of that,
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: she's just, yeah, I hate this movie.
- 1:20:45Speaker 4: I hate it.
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: And she's super religious. So listening to this woman, like,
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: hate on this thing her son has put so much
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: time and effort in it's really weird so it's like
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: yeah it's very it's such it's i guess good that
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: they come so late in the movie because like yeah
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: it's it's kind of dark the way that it's phrased
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: and thrown.
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: Out there like yeah it's great.
- 1:21:08Speaker 1: And especially from the only even within the characters in
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: the movie the only nice person they've come in contact
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: with is his mom like everybody else is kind of
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: an asshole so like she's the one good character and
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: she's like i'm proud this is falling apart i hate
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: this movie i'm just like wow this is our good
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: character yeah.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Yeah and it shows you like how somebody's dream can
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: cause like havoc and these ripples of destruction around that
- 1:21:39Speaker 2: person you know it's the the uh I heard this
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: phrase once. I was like, everybody is under the tyranny
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: of somebody else's dream. And I was like, whoa.
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: Are you talking about your children now?
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: Don't you want to watch that? Shut up, kids.
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: I've got a project to work on. Leave me alone.
- 1:22:01Speaker 6: Right, right, right.
- 1:22:03Speaker 2: So you become obsessed with something. And you draw these
- 1:22:08Speaker 2: people in. And it completely changes the... of the relationship
- 1:22:16Speaker 2: and you can be like so deep into something you
- 1:22:19Speaker 2: don't see um the waves of madness that you are generating.
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: And like we said earlier, and it can change everything
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: that came after it. And we kind of meant it
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: as a good thing earlier of like building relationships and
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: like all this cool behind the scenes stuff that may
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: have come from a project, but it also can destroy relationships.
- 1:22:45Speaker 1: It can ruin relationships. your relationship with your family, your friends,
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: you're destroying marriages. Like there's so many things that people
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: get so obsessed with on their artistic or professional level.
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: And like, it takes its toll on everything else in
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: their life.
- 1:23:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: It's like the cliche of the guy in the band,
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: you know, or the guitar player. It's like, I'm going to,
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: you know, I gotta put it all on the band,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: We're gonna make it. We're gonna, yeah, yeah. Odds are
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: you're gonna make it. You're right, buddy. Statistically, there's how
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: many bands going on in the world right now and
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: how many get super successful. So realistically, you're probably not
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: gonna make it. So you should probably put a little
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: more stock in like your loved ones, your family, your wife, you.
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: Know, like. Exactly. Exactly. Yeah. So you go like, but
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: that's like the weirdness of dream, you know, of having
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: a I'm having gold.
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you kind of have to have that.
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: And I, I realized that myself, but I'm like, to
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: use this example, if, if not for this dream that
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Don has, he's a guy that works in a, in
- 1:23:54Speaker 1: a factory. Like that's all he has. Now, granted he
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: should enjoy that. He's got a probably decent paying job
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: at the time. He's, he's got a wife, he's got
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: a daughter, you know, he had a home, like he
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: probably should just put stock in all that and be happy.
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: But again, doesn't want to be just a guy working
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: in a factory he's gotta have something else to fuel
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: him and take him to this big you know he's
- 1:24:16Speaker 1: even like in the middle of this mess we hear
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: him making these comments of like you know hopefully if
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: this goes right i'll never have to go back there
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: so he's got this dream that not only is he
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: going to make this wonderful artistic film but he's also
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: going to change his life so he never has to
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: go back to that factory again so it's like you
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: get that, you know, I think we all kind of
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: like tell ourselves these sort of things just to keep
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: ourselves going and give us something to work on and
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: something to push for.
- 1:24:44Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: Absolutely. Absolutely. The hope of the dream. And then like the, the,
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: the waves when it, when, how, how it can become
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: something destructive, you know? Yeah. The, the, it was interesting
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: his his view on his life versus one of those
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: like one of those weird Michigan swinger guys that he
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: had like on the crew yep very weird, uh, uh,
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: you know, subculture we, we got to see in this movie.
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: Um, you know, there is a little window into the seventies. Yes.
- 1:25:30Speaker 2: Yes. Everybody's like weird open marriages where they've got like
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: their wife and their girlfriend living in the same house.
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: And I mean, he's right. That is convenient, but it's
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: also creepy, dude. Yeah.
- 1:25:44Speaker 2: Yeah. And it was just sort of like, that was
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: sort of like, uh, Yeah, but everybody was just like,
- 1:25:49Speaker 2: that guy was real amiable, but he was going like, yeah,
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: I got a good job. I got insurance, and I
- 1:25:58Speaker 2: guess he was in the union. He goes like, I
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: don't like my job, but he wasn't like, upset about.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: It and again i think that's so many people like
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: even sitting there i'm like yeah i mean that's yeah
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: and that is sort of playing that game of having
- 1:26:15Speaker 1: a dream because the smart thing to do for even
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: somebody like don or jerry or whoever is to not
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: like go all in not just try to lose your
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: house and ruin your family and all of that. But
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: to do like a very balanced, you know, okay, I'm
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: going to work at the factory, but maybe on the weekends,
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: I'll try to put together this project I want to do.
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: But realistically, you talk to all these people who have
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: made it in the industry, and they usually don't go
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: like that. They usually have to make this all or
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: nothing all in. So I sold everything I own. I
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: moved to LA and like, I, I, you know, I
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: lived on this, you know, horrible little place for the
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: first two years I was there. I went to all
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: these auditions or I started shooting these weird movies and like,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: so like it, it doesn't work like that normally. Like
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: it's very rare that somebody plays it safe and becomes
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: successful or becomes a big star or whatever. Like you
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: usually have to do that all in throw, throw caution
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: to the wind move and, to make it big. So
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: that is the gamble. And like those of us who
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: are just like, eh, I don't really feel comfortable with that.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: I'm going to play it safe. Are the ones sitting
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: at home, like still working a real job, just being like, well,
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: I mean, I got, I got insurance. So I got that,
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: you know?
- 1:27:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: I mean, it is, like, it sucks. Like, it is
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: a real thing. Like, there are so many people who
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: are super, like, artistic-minded, but just don't want to lose everything,
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: so they play it safe. And, like, you usually don't
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: get anything when you play it safe.
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta, like, it's... I know my wife would
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: kill me if I like mortgage the house to make
- 1:27:53Speaker 2: something independent.
- 1:27:56Speaker 1: I mean, she kind of should.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: I believe in your dreams, but I mean, do we
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: have to be homeless for you to follow this path? thing.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: But up until recently, yes. You really kind of had to.
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: It was an all-in move. Now, I think lately, these
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: last 10, 15 years, the industry has changed so much
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: that you really can. You don't have to move to
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: one specific coast to You can actually do things remotely now.
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: You can release your own projects. You don't have to
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: worry about getting funding the same way you used to.
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: You don't have to worry about distribution the same way.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: You have to worry about them all. But like everything.
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: has changed so much. There is a way to do
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: like a mid-step where you can actually, you know, move
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: to Atlanta, but still work in film. As we said,
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: like there is a way to still like, work in
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: the industry, kind of work on the things you want
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: to work on, but not necessarily sacrifice everything in your life.
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: So I think that's gotten a little easier to do
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: in the last, you know, 15 years or so, but
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: it's still not easy.
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: I mean, at the time that they were making this
- 1:29:09Speaker 2: thing in 75, it was all, It's all or nothing.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: It's all or nothing.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: You've got to shoot it, you've got to print it,
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: and you've got to make prints to put it around
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: to places.
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: It was a different world, film-wise. It was a different industry, almost.
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: Definitely. A real independent person was.
- 1:29:36Speaker 2: You'd have to be crazy to try it. The people
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: that did it like a George Romero. I mean, George
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: Romero is probably a good.
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: He's the good example. Like he actually did have a
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: good factory job in an industrial city. He started doing
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: that kind of stuff on the side, got pretty like
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: slowly making tons of industrial films, got pretty successful at
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: that hand. And then parlayed that into a little artistic
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: project on the side. Like he's one of the few
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: times that that actually worked.
- 1:30:12Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. But even for him, Even with Night of
- 1:30:16Speaker 2: the Living Dead, it took him probably another 10 years
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: to be able to even make money doing it. Oh, yeah.
- 1:30:22Speaker 2: I mean, he.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: Lost so much money on that, like losing the licensing rights. Like, again,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: just not really knowing what he was doing. He was
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: still just kind of a he's a talented filmmaker, but
- 1:30:33Speaker 1: he hadn't been working in the industry the way that,
- 1:30:36Speaker 1: you know, seasoned people in L.A. were like he's up
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: and he's up in a town that, you know, is
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: mostly factories. So like, what the hell does he know
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: about licensing rights? So all of this stuff gets messed
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: up and ends up costing him money. Now, as I've theorized,
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: it's also the reason he became a legend, you know, had,
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: had he kept the rights to the name, uh, I
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: think not near as many people would know about his movies,
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: care about his movies. Like nobody would have had the
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: exposure to his movie. So I'm like, I don't know
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: that it would have changed the industry the same way
- 1:31:11Speaker 1: if he had made money off of it. So I'm like, it,
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: it helped him and change the industry the way that
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: it happened. But it's, Sucked at the time. I'm sure
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: he was kicking himself, you know, right after everything started
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: falling apart on that end of it, on the business
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: end of it.
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: Well, definitely, definitely. Yeah, that's a good point. It had
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: not been public domain and like on every channel, every moment,
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: you know, and 50 versions of it on video.
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: Yeah, you could buy it at a gas station while you're...
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: filling up, get me a Slurpee, and hey, look, Night
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: of the Living Dead's right here by the register for $ 6.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: 99.
- 1:31:49Speaker 1: I think I'll take it. It became so accessible that
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: everybody then knew his movie. So it worked out in
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: the long run, but not the way he expected, I'm sure.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: Oh, definitely not. I mean, he was making films in Pittsburgh,
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: and eventually he just wasn't making enough money. He actually
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: went back to making documentaries and industrial films. Yeah. And
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: it wasn't until... Argento came and saved them with Dawn
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: of the Dead, that he started actually being able to, like, oh,
- 1:32:20Speaker 2: that's my full filmmaking, like, narrative filmmaking is my full-time
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: gig now, you know? And so that was 10 years.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: And I looked at Don Jackson's filmography, and, you know,
- 1:32:35Speaker 2: the guy, as crazy as he is, I mean... kept
- 1:32:40Speaker 2: on making movies, but it was like a 10 year
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: period between my, not my demon lover was Scott Valentine,
- 1:32:48Speaker 2: but demon lovers.
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: We continually made that, even the first time we planned
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: on watching this, like as soon as you said it,
- 1:32:56Speaker 1: I was like, wait, My Demon Lover with Scott Valentine?
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: Hell yeah, I'll watch that movie. So I like that
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: we're still making that mistake and confusing ourselves, but we'll
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: get to that one later because I kind of do
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: want to talk about that movie, but that is not
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: today's movie.
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: Yeah, right, right. So it did take him about 10
- 1:33:14Speaker 2: years to make another movie after, you know, this, this, uh,
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: train wreck that he went through. Um, and, um, I
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: think it was a wrestling documentary. So, I mean, he,
- 1:33:26Speaker 2: he had to, you know, this was probably a 10
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: years of licking his wounds from this before he could
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: get another project together. And, um, but then you go,
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: he does go off and he moves to LA and
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: he becomes like a, you know, it makes like low
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: budget roller blade. Uh, Oh, well, uh, He goes on
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: to co-direct Hell Comes to Frogtown is the movie.
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: That's his big claim to fame is Hell Comes to Frogtown.
- 1:33:55Speaker 2: Hell Comes to Frogtown.
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: Which says a lot about someone's career when that's their
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: big claim to fame.
- 1:34:01Speaker 2: That's the ring the bell moment, you know, with Hell
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: Comes to Frogtown. But the thing is, he destroys his
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: life in Michigan. He picks up the pieces. and then
- 1:34:14Speaker 2: he moves to LA and he doesn't have a career,
- 1:34:16Speaker 2: but I mean, it's, I think it is that, as
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: you're saying, it's that kind of all or nothing kind
- 1:34:20Speaker 2: of crazy mentality you have to have to, to do it.
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: I mean, well, and he did. And that's what surprised me.
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: Cause I didn't, when I watched this that first time,
- 1:34:31Speaker 1: I was like, I still don't know who any of
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: these people are. So then I was like, Oh, this
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: guy actually did go on to make a lot of movies,
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: like not, not huge budget stuff, but he made a
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: lot of movies in his time.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: And, The thing is, I'm like, well, he then eventually
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: moved to L.A. and had the life I guess he
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: was shooting for to some degree. But I'm like, I
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: don't know much about him personally. Did it actually cost
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: him that wife and that he lost that house and
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: the child never talked to him again? Like, did it
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: actually cost him his entire family? And then he had
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: nothing else to lose and just moved to.
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: L.A.? Like, right.
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: I don't I don't know, but.
- 1:35:08Speaker 2: Probably like probably.
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: It would most people I would feel like.
- 1:35:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it would be to bring your family
- 1:35:19Speaker 2: out to work as a freelancer to maybe, you know,
- 1:35:22Speaker 2: I mean, that would be a tough pill to swallow,
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: you know. I don't know. I don't know. The interview
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: I read with him, It was interesting, but he doesn't
- 1:35:32Speaker 2: mention the family too much.
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: Yep. Probably for a very specific reason. And they don't
- 1:35:40Speaker 1: mention him now either.
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: Probably not. Probably not. You know, but, but so, but
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: what's also interesting is Don's got like 40 director credits
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: and the people that made the documentary that these, you know,
- 1:35:58Speaker 2: they probably just kept making, they don't really have any
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: other credits.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Our director of this movie made two things, neither
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: of which really got seen at the time. Like even
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: the one she made after this was about like high
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: school kids and was supposed to be, I think aired
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: for PBS or something like, like it had a backing
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: and then didn't get aired. So like that got taken
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: away from her. And like, so yeah, it's, It is
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: one of those things that, yeah, like the people that
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: we think have it together in this movie are the
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: ones that didn't really go on to become a big
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: name in the industry at all. And then this guy, granted,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: it's not a respected name in the industry, but he
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: went on to produce a ton of movies in Hollywood.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: So like, I don't know, where do you land on
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: this thing? Like who's the winner? I'm guessing nobody.
- 1:36:49Speaker 8: Right.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know. I mean, yeah. The documentary filmmaker,
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: they probably continue working in some fashion in the industry.
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: They might not be on IMDb, but some sort of fashion.
- 1:37:04Speaker 2: But they did it for all their expertise. They just
- 1:37:10Speaker 2: don't have the credits listed. So I think that's probably true.
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: They probably had the talent, but... you know, they probably
- 1:37:23Speaker 2: got swallowed up by life or something, while Don, he's like,
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: I'm going to destroy my life, so.
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Yeah, Don has no life, so I'm free to make
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: lots of bad movies, I have to. Speaking of which,
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: can we, can we run down some of the credits
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: he has here, because, yeah, the weird rollerblade kick is crazy,
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: and he seems to have a thing for frogs, but
- 1:37:47Speaker 1: So after My Demon Lover, the documentary is I Like
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: to Hurt People is our wrestling documentary.
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: Fantastic title.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Which then jumps to 1988's Rollerblade.
- 1:37:57Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: Let's just follow that down. Then we go to 91
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: is the Rollerblade 7, followed by Legend of the Rollerblade 7,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: followed by Return of Rollerblade 7. Yes. Then let's see.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: They don't totally go away. You go several years and
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: we get back to, oh, wait, there's a roller gator.
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: I'm going to have to find that.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that sounds pretty good.
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: If you can give me a gator on rollerblades, i
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: i'm on board with that um but then yeah somewhere
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: down here there's some other let's.
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: See rollerblade seven return to rollerblade a lot of rollerblade.
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: Movies he likes his rollerblades but then what else we've
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: got oh lingerie kickboxer let's see a movie like lingerie.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: Kickboxer the filmography is guns of el chupacabra.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Another thing he seemed to get kind of interested in
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: because then we come back to guns of el chupacabra
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: 2 colon the unseen oh no crimes of the chupacabra
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: oh lord guns of the el chupacabra 3 colon the
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: lost interviews oh my.
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: Gosh that's awesome but but if you look to.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: Round it out though max hell frog warrior is uh
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: 2002 he's the executive producer on that one so he
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: he liked to work his frogs in there as.
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: Well but that's his big hit is the uh is
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: the hell comes to frog town you know so yeah
- 1:39:34Speaker 2: um but his director credits he's got 40 credits like
- 1:39:38Speaker 2: showing up there i mean that's a lot of work
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: you know I mean, it's, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: Like it is, it is interesting to look at from
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: that perspective is like, well, I mean, he did to
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: some extent get his dream. Like his dream was to
- 1:39:53Speaker 1: go be a big shot in Hollywood. Well, in the
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: little pond of these bad movies, he became kind of
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: a big shot. So it's like, he got to be
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: producer of all these movies. I'm sure he was still
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: like telling people what to do, which is what he
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: kind of loves to do in this movie is just
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: roll in and tell people, all right, I got this.
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: And you're going to stay here and answer phones and
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: you're going to do this. And I got, you figure
- 1:40:17Speaker 1: out the lighting and I'll shoot it. And like, so,
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: I mean, he got to be who he was already
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: projecting even back as far as this movie.
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: Yeah. And that's, that's the beauty of a dream, man.
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: That's the beauty of a dream. You just like, you
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: just like all in and you make it happen and
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: stuff like that. But, but, that what's what's also just
- 1:40:37Speaker 2: great is you see like how many like these people
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: going like well you're crazy and you don't know what
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: you're doing and you just kind of have that um
- 1:40:48Speaker 2: uh what's called the.
- 1:40:49Speaker 16: Reality and what they call it steve johnson was like
- 1:40:54Speaker 16: that that reality distortion field where yeah i find like
- 1:40:59Speaker 16: a lot of successful people they have that where they
- 1:41:02Speaker 16: just don't They just can't picture the reality being other
- 1:41:11Speaker 16: than what they have in their head, you know?
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: Or it's like, I don't know what it is. It's like,
- 1:41:17Speaker 2: you hear them talk, you go like, well, you're like delusional.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: You're wrong, obviously. I'm making a masterpiece.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: Right, right, exactly. But, you know... they don't listen or
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: that's just not even in their head, you know? Yeah.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: I mean, I think normal people, even if they have,
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: you know, a good drive to them to push through
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, we'll hear it and it will
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: kind of eat at them, you know, they'll be like, Oh,
- 1:41:44Speaker 1: maybe I'm not as good as I think like normal people.
- 1:41:47Speaker 1: I think what, but you get to a level where they're,
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: they're almost to the point of delusional where it's just like,
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's, it's that same thing I was talking
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: about recently talking about the Canon films, you know, it's like,
- 1:41:58Speaker 1: it's that same thing of like those, those two guys,
- 1:42:01Speaker 1: like you couldn't have told them they weren't making the
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: greatest American movies ever. And like, they, you know, that
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: they're totally convinced that what they're making is essential filmmaking
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: is important movies. And like, And like that they were
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: high rollers in Hollywood and eventually they became that. And
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: it's kind of like a slightly lesser version for Don here,
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: but like he kind of did that same thing. He
- 1:42:26Speaker 1: was so delusional, he pushed past it all and got
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: to a reality that was similar to his delusion.
- 1:42:32Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 1:42:33Speaker 2: I mean, I guess there's a lesson there, but you
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: just gotta be willing to like say, I'm gonna destroy
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: a couple of people in the process.
- 1:42:44Speaker 1: I'm willing to throw away everything else in my life
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: for the chance that this will happen. Because think about
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: how many other guys out there have done the same
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: thing and are living in the gutter in LA. So like,
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: you know, it's like, it's, it's a one in a
- 1:42:58Speaker 1: million shot that you even get the low level version
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: of what Don had, let alone that you get to
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: be like a big, you know, you know, A-list kind
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: of successful person. So yeah, I mean, it's a hell.
- 1:43:09Speaker 10: Of a ride.
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah. For every Don Jackson, there's like
- 1:43:15Speaker 2: 12 guys who don't have, you know, a hundred guys
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: who don't have a front end down to show for it.
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: So, yeah, there's a few that end up living in
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: the gutter and there's a lot that probably go back
- 1:43:25Speaker 1: and start working in the factory again. They're just like,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: they do it for a couple of years. It doesn't
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: work out. They're like, well, all right, fine. And they
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: give up on the dream and they head back and
- 1:43:35Speaker 1: work the factory and like, oh, well at least I
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: got insurance now. So, I mean, it, it's, kind of
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: depressing on some levels that this is, I mean, you
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: have to destroy so much of your life to make
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: your dream happen or live this broken version of yourself
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: that no longer has that dream. It's not easy no
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: matter what the path.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: Right, right. Yeah, I know. It's, yeah, I don't, I think.
- 1:44:05Speaker 6: I.
- 1:44:08Speaker 2: Mean, I think if you are, miserable you know you
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: should have like the uh the the side hustle the
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: the whatever but i mean it's also i don't know
- 1:44:20Speaker 2: man it's like dreams are weird it's like they they
- 1:44:23Speaker 2: can uh they can set you free and they can
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: also crush you so.
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: Yeah i mean i think i think my takeaway and
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: this is from dealing with my own bullshit but also
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: just like watching all these other people who are artists
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: in so many different levels and so many different industries.
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: I'm like, I think the, I think the takeaway from
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: any of these kinds of lessons is like, if you
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: are legitimately, you know, interested in whatever it is you're doing,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: if what you're doing is an art form to you,
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: then you should probably focus on that. And you should
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: focus on like creating what you want to create. Like,
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: making yourself happy with what it is that you're creating
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: and not whether or not it becomes successful. So that
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: way you can continue. If you have to work a
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: regular job to do it on the side, you can
- 1:45:14Speaker 1: create the thing that you care about and you're doing
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: it because you care about it. And if it never breaks,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: you're still happy with the thing that you made, whether
- 1:45:22Speaker 1: or not it becomes successful, whether or not anybody else cares,
- 1:45:26Speaker 1: you are still happy with it. And that is what's
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: making you, you know, feel successful feel accomplished is because
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: you created the thing you set out to do whatever
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: your art is you know whereas like if you're only
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: looking for success you're probably not going to find it
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: and like even if you do is it going to
- 1:45:46Speaker 1: be a hollow success because you didn't focus on the
- 1:45:49Speaker 1: art of it to get there so I yeah I
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: think that's from you know so many people that I
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: think are super talented artists and seem okay that seem
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: level-headed yeah It's because they're kind of focusing on the
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: good part of it, which is I'm going to create
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: this thing. I'm going to do my job. I'm going
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: to do my job well. And then if I happen
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: to get successful in the process, that's nice, but that's
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: not my focus.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't base it on that kind of success
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: because it's so signal anyway. Even if you achieve it,
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: I mean, it's like a certain level of success is
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: pretty fleeting. You know, it's like even if you get
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: like fans, the fans are... possibly want to turn on you.
- 1:46:33Speaker 1: Maybe not even turn on you. I mean, I think
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: that's what I've seen so much now is people just
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: are easily distracted. Like, even if they legitimately like this thing,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: it's a movie, it's a show, it's a whoever, you know,
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: your album, your whatever. Like, I think within... a year
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: or two, something else comes along and they may not
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: dislike you now, but they find some new thing that
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: they're into and they just move on. So like, there's
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: no guarantee that they're going to drag you with them
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: for the rest of their life. Like they might like
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: the thing you did, but as a, as a fan base,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: it might not be there a year or two down
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: the road. So it's like, you can't, you can't build
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: your entire life around having these fans because like, again
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: it's not even malicious it's just like they have other
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: stuff that they're interested in absolutely absolutely.
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: So yeah it's in the doing and and it's in
- 1:47:23Speaker 2: the uh the process and it's in the uh what
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: you're getting personal satisfaction from from the act that's you know.
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: So from that angle maybe towards the end there if
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: we're if we're making this ed wood movie maybe Don found,
- 1:47:40Speaker 1: you know, some sort of happiness and just making these
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: cheesy B movies. And like, maybe he became okay as
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: a person, maybe he leveled out and wasn't destroying lives.
- 1:47:50Speaker 1: Maybe eventually after he lost everything, as he rebuilt himself,
- 1:47:54Speaker 1: making these movies, he, he learned to just appreciate the
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: cheesy movies he was making. And, you know, I, I hope,
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: you know, he's Don's no longer with us, but I, I,
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: I guess I want the best for everyone in this movie.
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: And like even Don, as much as a villain as
- 1:48:11Speaker 1: he kind of becomes like in the long run, he's
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: still a person. You still kind of don't want, you know,
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: horrible things for him, I guess. I don't, again, he
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: doesn't seem like he's, he doesn't seem like he's setting
- 1:48:23Speaker 1: out to be a villain. He just so crazy and
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: full of himself. He comes off that way sometimes within
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: our story.
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: Sure. Absolutely. Yeah. No, I mean, I think, I mean,
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: he made a lot of work. So, I mean, yeah, you,
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: you hope he's like, like, uh, was satisfied, uh, with
- 1:48:42Speaker 2: the producing of it. And, you know, I mean, you know, uh, I,
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: I think it, it seems like, I mean, you don't
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: make 40 roller blade movies if you're miserable.
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: Or maybe you do.
- 1:48:56Speaker 2: But it's probably easier way to make money.
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: So, you know, but it, it obviously got to a
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: point where he was making a living at it because
- 1:49:04Speaker 1: he kept making these things. So like, he didn't get, again,
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: thinking back to my normal go-to for the B movies,
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: but somebody like Roger Corman like gets elevated to the
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: point of like all of Hollywood respects him now, even
- 1:49:16Speaker 1: though he was making schlocky B movies, like people look
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: up to him for like who he became in the industry.
- 1:49:23Speaker 1: Don was doing essentially the same kind of thing, but
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: you know, he just stayed at that under the radar
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: level and like, most people don't even know his name.
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: So like he, but again, like he got to keep
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: making movies as time went on. So maybe that's the takeaway.
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: Maybe he just got to a point where he was
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: okay making the next roller blade movie. And this time
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: let's put a frog on roller blades and we'll make
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: this work. And finally my dream will be achieved.
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: Yeah, totally. Totally. Yeah. You know, I mean, it shows
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: like persistence and it shows, you know, that, you know,
- 1:49:57Speaker 2: it can happen even if like people think you're crazy. Um, But,
- 1:50:01Speaker 2: you know, there's just, you know, the price that has
- 1:50:04Speaker 2: to be paid. And, you know, one interesting thing was
- 1:50:10Speaker 2: in this interview I read with him was that the
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: timeline is this, where he makes the demon lover and
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: then that doesn't really go anywhere for him. And then
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: he makes that documentary, I Like to Hurt People. And
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: then that gets picked up by New World Pictures. And
- 1:50:33Speaker 2: at the time, so that finances his move to LA.
- 1:50:41Speaker 2: New World Pictures at the time had James Cameron working
- 1:50:46Speaker 2: at it. And so James Cameron was working second unit
- 1:50:51Speaker 2: on Galaxy of Terror.
- 1:50:55Speaker 14: It's all coming together yeah all come together here bear
- 1:50:59Speaker 14: with me here and so uh don got a job
- 1:51:03Speaker 14: on galaxy of terror as an assistant cameraman shooting the
- 1:51:07Speaker 14: stuff for.
- 1:51:08Speaker 2: Cameron and then later when james cameron makes the terminator
- 1:51:15Speaker 2: don is the cameraman on like uh some additional photography
- 1:51:21Speaker 2: that they did on the movie So the scene where
- 1:51:25Speaker 2: Arnold Schwarzenegger first comes into the present, you know, and
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: it goes and looks at the skyline, that was Don
- 1:51:37Speaker 2: Jackson behind the camera shooting that.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 1:51:42Speaker 2: Isn't that weird?
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: Well, and it's funny that, you know, you've got the
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: guy holding the camera in one of these iconic moments,
- 1:51:50Speaker 1: but like you go back, you know, less than a decade.
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: And like, he's almost scared to hold the camera in
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: this movie. He's so unsure of his own ability that like,
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: he brings this guy in from another state to be like, well,
- 1:52:05Speaker 1: you've shot other movies. So I have faith in you.
- 1:52:08Speaker 1: And I, he builds up, you know, Jeff so much
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: so that like that way it takes the pressure off him.
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: I don't have to, cause I think he's like doubts
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: himself so much at that point that like, she even
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: says that in her narration, like it feels like he
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: wants to direct this movie himself, but he doesn't think
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: he can. So like, I guess it's like reassuring that
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: like within, you know, 10 years or so he builds
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: himself up enough to be working the camera next to
- 1:52:35Speaker 1: James Cameron, you know? So that's, that's impressive.
- 1:52:38Speaker 2: Really?
- 1:52:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: That's, I thought that was really cool, man, you know?
- 1:52:42Speaker 2: And so it shows, you know, just, you know, investing
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: in yourself, invest in yourself. I don't want to, now
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: it's becoming like a self-help thing, you know?
- 1:52:54Speaker 1: Well, I mean, all of this is, again, I didn't
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: set out for that, but so much of this has
- 1:52:59Speaker 1: become like, chasing your dreams or trusting yourself or build
- 1:53:03Speaker 1: yourself up as an artist. Like it's all become these,
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: which is again, everything that happens to me on this show.
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: Like it leaves, it leaves the confines of the movie
- 1:53:11Speaker 1: you watch and becomes about something much bigger and becomes
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: about like, how do you get through life? Like, how
- 1:53:18Speaker 1: do you find a way to get down all these
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: crazy paths and find a way to be happy? And like, you're,
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: we're looking at it through the, you know, the, the
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: viewfinder of this cheesy movie from the seventies, but like,
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: you can apply what's going on here to so many
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: bigger ideas.
- 1:53:35Speaker 2: Right, right, absolutely. And sometimes it's the crazy people that,
- 1:53:40Speaker 2: you know, get that far, you know? I mean, it's
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: like the people that were, again, the filmmakers of the documentary,
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: you know, they, you know, they just kind of like
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: fizzled out, you know, on the scene, it seems like,
- 1:53:54Speaker 2: you know? Sometimes you can be too... um well adjusted
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: to what i do.
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: Yeah maybe you're too level-headed to be able to make
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: it and push through like you have enough sense to
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: go okay this is ridiculous i'm just gonna go get
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: a regular job right where somebody who's a little unhinged
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: like don is just like no no i can make
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: this work i'm moving to la like so i mean
- 1:54:22Speaker 1: you really do have to have that that ability to
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: step over the lines of good sense and be like
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: no i'm going to make this dream work damn it
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: like even if it doesn't make any sense and like
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: so that i guess goes to show you yeah and
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: then i was i was also thinking going back to
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: our thing from earlier but like as much as maybe
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: don didn't break through and become a huge you know
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: household name in the industry but think about those 40
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: movies that he came together and was either like directing
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: or executive producing. All of those had all these other
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: people working on them. So all these other people that
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: are like up and comers now have a job and
- 1:55:05Speaker 1: like this job led to another job. So I'm like, he,
- 1:55:08Speaker 1: because he's now working in the industry, he's creating all
- 1:55:11Speaker 1: these other connections and, and momentum for all these other
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: people that go on to build something. So it all
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: becomes like a, a ripple effect that like leads to
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: being important in all these other people's lives, whether he
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: amounted to anything himself or not, he led to all
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: these other things getting made. And then that led them
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: through the rest of their careers. So like it, it
- 1:55:34Speaker 1: really is like butterfly effect of the whole damn industry.
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: Yeah. And not just that, you're not just the industry,
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: but the people who have watched their movies, you know, there,
- 1:55:45Speaker 2: there's a group of friends out there who are, Hill
- 1:55:49Speaker 2: Comes to Frogtown is like their big memory, you know? Yep, yep.
- 1:55:55Speaker 2: I was talking to some random lady the other day
- 1:55:57Speaker 2: at Publix.
- 1:55:59Speaker 1: This sounds unlikely.
- 1:56:01Speaker 2: Yeah, some random lady. It's so easy to talk to
- 1:56:03Speaker 2: people when you're wearing a mask. I was wearing a
- 1:56:11Speaker 2: Jason Voorhees t-shirt, of course, you know, buying a sub
- 1:56:16Speaker 2: at a grocery store. And she saw that and she
- 1:56:20Speaker 2: goes like, Oh, Jason Voorhees. When I was a teenager,
- 1:56:25Speaker 2: like every year going to see the new Jason Friday,
- 1:56:29Speaker 2: 13th movies, those were our favorite things. And she started
- 1:56:32Speaker 2: talking about these people that, you know, being a teenager
- 1:56:35Speaker 2: in the eighties going out with, uh, Going out on dates,
- 1:56:41Speaker 2: and if it was a Friday the 13th movie, that
- 1:56:43Speaker 2: was definitely the one that we were going to go see,
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: and she remembers this and that, and growing up in Alabama.
- 1:56:51Speaker 2: That's like the history of movies you don't hear about.
- 1:56:54Speaker 2: You always hear about the production, but you don't realize
- 1:56:57Speaker 2: how important the memories that these movies that come out
- 1:57:03Speaker 2: as product, but how they are touchstone memories in a
- 1:57:08Speaker 2: lot of people's lives, you know? And, um, so I'm
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: sure there is, you know, a group of friends like
- 1:57:15Speaker 2: who stayed up watching USA up all night and watch
- 1:57:18Speaker 2: hail comes to frog town and they have their own
- 1:57:21Speaker 2: little like in jokes with it and all that stuff,
- 1:57:24Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: And they don't go on to be superstar. Again, we're
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: worried about whether or not you become a big name
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: in the industry. This lady is working at a grocery.
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: For most people, that's all it is. You go back
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: to the factory, you go work at a grocery. For
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: the majority of us out in the world, you're still
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: just working day jobs. The only thing that maybe brings
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: you joy is going home and watching a movie. This
- 1:57:50Speaker 1: is what the rest of us latch on to. It's
- 1:57:54Speaker 1: our escape or to dream of something more than building
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: a sandwich for some guy in a Jason, but like
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: that moment of like seeing you in the t-shirt is
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: like all of a sudden it's flashback.
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:58:07Speaker 1: Like having a good memory of when she, was a
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: kid and like it's all tied to film.
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: Yeah it's a it's an amazing thing that the film
- 1:58:16Speaker 2: that films how they tie us together like that you
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: know everybody's got their memories of seeing certain movies and
- 1:58:23Speaker 2: and um i'm like And like, even a bad movie,
- 1:58:27Speaker 2: even like going to see Tenet the other night, I mean,
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: I was like... it made me walking out of that
- 1:58:32Speaker 2: movie and going like, Oh, thank God I'm back in reality.
- 1:58:34Speaker 2: So even a bad movie, like a good movie can
- 1:58:39Speaker 2: give you an escape from reality and a bad movie
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: that can give you an escape from the movie, you know,
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: but either way they're escaping.
- 1:58:47Speaker 1: I mean, that was my takeaway from this movie is like, really?
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: And that's why I even said at the beginning there,
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: I was like, if you're like an indie filmmaker, like
- 1:58:55Speaker 1: this is the movie because it's, you're watching this and
- 1:58:57Speaker 1: you're just like, they don't know what the hell they're doing.
- 1:59:00Speaker 1: Like with the exception of our filmmakers, like they're at
- 1:59:04Speaker 1: least sort of experienced, but like our main guys, you know,
- 1:59:06Speaker 1: the directors don't know what the hell they're doing. Don't
- 1:59:09Speaker 1: know how to work within the industry. Don't know how
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: to set up shots. Like don't know how to plan
- 1:59:13Speaker 1: the film shoot.
- 1:59:14Speaker 2: As a whole.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: And yet they made a movie. Like it came. That's
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: the thing. When I saw this the first time I
- 1:59:20Speaker 1: was like, so this movie never happened.
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: Like it fell apart and never got made. No, it
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: got released. Like I watched it. trailer today.
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: It's a thing.
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: So, even you're immersed in it in this documentary, you
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: see the level of disorganization and ridiculous things going on,
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: and yet these guys got their movie made and got
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: it out there. And at a time when it was
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: a million times harder to do. So, I was like,
- 1:59:45Speaker 1: to me, the takeaway of, like, if you're a filmmaker,
- 1:59:49Speaker 1: if these guys can make a movie, you're fine. Like,
- 1:59:52Speaker 1: go work on your project. Like, again, Maybe don't sacrifice
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: your entire life to do it, but you can make
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: the thing that you want to make because these guys did.
- 2:00:02Speaker 1: It probably didn't turn out exactly like they wanted, but
- 2:00:05Speaker 1: they got their product made. They got their finished product
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: eventually and they made their movie. And that was my takeaway.
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: I was like, man, if these guys can make a movie,
- 2:00:14Speaker 1: like it just, it makes me want to go make something.
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 2:00:18Speaker 1: If it's not going to be successful. Like now, how
- 2:00:21Speaker 1: many decades later, we're still watching a movie about them
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: making this movie and getting something from it. So like,
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: you might as well go make whatever you want to
- 2:00:30Speaker 1: make because who knows what it becomes, you know? As
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: long as you finish it and throw it out there
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: in the world, like somebody might appreciate it.
- 2:00:38Speaker 2: You should never let not knowing... how to do something
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: to keep you from doing it.
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: Obviously not. As Don and Jerry have shown us.
- 2:00:49Speaker 2: And even if you know what you're doing, it doesn't matter.
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: I mean, Tenet, I mean, all those people knew what
- 2:00:54Speaker 2: they were doing. And it was, they were wrong.
- 2:01:01Speaker 1: From your point of view.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: From my point of view, they were wrong. They were
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: 100% certainly wrong.
- 2:01:08Speaker 1: But they got their movie done. It got out. It
- 2:01:12Speaker 1: got a massive release on a world full of audiences
- 2:01:15Speaker 1: waiting to, oh, no, wait. but it got a release
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: we'll put.
- 2:01:20Speaker 2: It that way yeah man absolutely you know so i
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: mean as you know you could say don uh jackson
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: was delusional making demon lover but you know you can
- 2:01:33Speaker 2: also say um Chris Nolan, delusional making tennis.
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: All of these, like you, you look back, I mean,
- 2:01:41Speaker 1: it would be just as easy to say in, you know,
- 2:01:44Speaker 1: 1983 or whatever it was that James Cameron kid who'd
- 2:01:48Speaker 1: been doing nothing but making bad B movies for years.
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: is delusional that he thinks this weird thing about a
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: shiny chrome man from the future is going to catch
- 2:01:58Speaker 1: on and people are going to care about it.
- 2:01:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:02:00Speaker 1: But it did like it happened. So like, that's another
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: one of those guys that started off, you know, making
- 2:02:06Speaker 1: schlocky B movies and just kind of kept at it
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: and then made two of the most successful movies in
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: the history of industry and got an Oscar.
- 2:02:15Speaker 2: So who knows, you know, it's like, Yeah, you don't,
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: you don't. And movies just, that's what I guess keeps
- 2:02:23Speaker 2: people coming back to make another one is that you
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: just don't, you just don't know what makes a movie
- 2:02:31Speaker 2: live or not, you know? And I mean, I'm sure
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: he worked just as hard on True Lies as he did.
- 2:02:37Speaker 2: you know, aliens, but you know, for me, True Lies
- 2:02:39Speaker 2: is kind of, kind of a garbage movie.
- 2:02:43Speaker 1: I'm glad I'm not the only one. Even, even when
- 2:02:45Speaker 1: it came, well, I mean, I don't out and out
- 2:02:47Speaker 1: hate it, but it's like, it's so just not up
- 2:02:50Speaker 1: to speed when you're looking at something like aliens. And
- 2:02:54Speaker 1: even like the level of like cool professional stuff that
- 2:02:57Speaker 1: he did in like Titanic is like impressive. And then
- 2:03:00Speaker 1: true lies is just kind of silly. Like, I'm just like, it's,
- 2:03:04Speaker 1: it's fun. There's some good performances along the way. Anything
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: where you can watch Bill Paxton do what he's doing
- 2:03:10Speaker 1: in that movie is hilarious. But like, It's just so
- 2:03:14Speaker 1: a lesser Cameron movie.
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: And it's not like they set out to it. I mean, they,
- 2:03:19Speaker 2: it just didn't, when you got all the wiring done
- 2:03:22Speaker 2: and put, you know, you flip the switch and it
- 2:03:24Speaker 2: just doesn't turn on, you know, and you don't know
- 2:03:27Speaker 2: why it's just the magic of, of anything, you know?
- 2:03:33Speaker 1: But somewhere there's a young douche coup just waiting to
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: break out. And because of that movie, we have the
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: douche coup no today.
- 2:03:43Speaker 2: There we go. Thank you. If nothing else, we got,
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: you know, a douche coup, you know, in our lives
- 2:03:50Speaker 2: from starting with that movie. All right.
- 2:03:53Speaker 1: Well, so I don't forget. I think we really need
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: to get to the, I mean, the fact that this
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: movie is for, well, the, the demon lover, the original
- 2:04:04Speaker 1: movie is forgotten and, you know, nobody cared about it, but,
- 2:04:09Speaker 1: This movie we have right here has a superstar in it.
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: I mean, somehow we managed to get somebody who is
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: kind of a household name in this movie. Granted, they're
- 2:04:19Speaker 1: in there for about 38 seconds, but they are in
- 2:04:22Speaker 1: this movie.
- 2:04:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Down in the wilds of Michigan, Don Jackson somehow
- 2:04:30Speaker 2: was best buddy or acquaintance's buddies with the Nuge.
- 2:04:40Speaker 1: I think it's funny. Cause I, I mean, I guess
- 2:04:42Speaker 1: I've kind of always known who he is. Like he
- 2:04:44Speaker 1: still was like pretty big radio rock kind of thing.
- 2:04:48Speaker 2: It's funny.
- 2:04:48Speaker 1: Cause I still think back and I'm like, for as
- 2:04:50Speaker 1: huge a name as he is, I think I can
- 2:04:52Speaker 1: still just name one song. Like he was kind of
- 2:04:56Speaker 1: like a one hit wonder that like his personality made
- 2:04:59Speaker 1: him bigger and more like well known and accepted. And
- 2:05:03Speaker 1: everyone's like, Oh yeah, he's a rock star. But I'm
- 2:05:05Speaker 1: just like, but what are all his hits?
- 2:05:08Speaker 2: Right. Yeah. Right.
- 2:05:11Speaker 1: But it's funny that to me, this was still kind
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: of like pretty far back in, I mean, I guess
- 2:05:15Speaker 1: he was already sort of a name, but like, it's
- 2:05:18Speaker 1: funny that he, as we get to know him now,
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: he was already there because we cut to the scene
- 2:05:23Speaker 1: and it's like, well, we can't shoot till tonight because
- 2:05:26Speaker 1: this guy's out hunting all day. And I'm like, well, shit,
- 2:05:30Speaker 1: that's the Ted we know now. Like he was never
- 2:05:32Speaker 1: any different. He was already being a crazy guy out
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: hunting in the middle of the day. because that's who.
- 2:05:37Speaker 2: Ted is right right that's yeah he's ted nugent is
- 2:05:41Speaker 2: ted nugent man that's like uh you know he did
- 2:05:45Speaker 2: he did not come later in life this was uh
- 2:05:47Speaker 2: he was he came out of the mold like that
- 2:05:49Speaker 2: i guess you.
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: Know fully formed as he came out holding a shotgun
- 2:05:53Speaker 1: and a bowie knife out of the womb which had
- 2:05:55Speaker 1: to be a really uncomfortable birth yeah and uh yeah
- 2:05:59Speaker 1: immediately just Yeah, he just immediately launched into that. So
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: I don't think I realized he was that level of
- 2:06:05Speaker 1: crazy that far back. I knew he was the crazy
- 2:06:08Speaker 1: madman on stage being a rock star, but I don't
- 2:06:11Speaker 1: think I knew how crazy. I mean, I guess it
- 2:06:13Speaker 1: makes sense. I mean, when you're that devoted, like Ted
- 2:06:16Speaker 1: Nugent is, I guess you would have been doing that
- 2:06:19Speaker 1: since childhood, probably. Yeah. But yeah, even then, his house
- 2:06:23Speaker 1: was covered in dead animals. And he was the guy
- 2:06:27Speaker 1: they went to to get firearms. I'm like, yeah, that
- 2:06:31Speaker 1: makes sense. That's where you go to get a gun.
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: You go to Ted Nugent's house.
- 2:06:34Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:06:34Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:06:35Speaker 2: And it's like, yeah, live rounds. And when she pans
- 2:06:38Speaker 2: the camera up to like all the deer heads on
- 2:06:40Speaker 2: the wall, it's almost like Pegasus Chainsaw Massacre, her reaction.
- 2:06:44Speaker 2: You know, she's like... She's like, those are dead animals.
- 2:06:49Speaker 2: She's just never seen that before. It's like such a
- 2:06:51Speaker 2: culture shock for her, you know?
- 2:06:54Speaker 6: Yep, yep, yep.
- 2:06:57Speaker 2: Pretty good. So, yeah.
- 2:06:59Speaker 1: That was kind of interesting that, yeah, in this movie
- 2:07:01Speaker 1: of a bunch of random nobodies that even kind of
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: went on to not be big people. Somehow, for a
- 2:07:07Speaker 1: few seconds there, we get somebody who's kind of a
- 2:07:10Speaker 1: major name, even back in the day. I was like, wait,
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: how did we end up at Ted Nugent's house?
- 2:07:15Speaker 3: Right, right.
- 2:07:15Speaker 2: It's like special guest star, Ted Nugent.
- 2:07:18Speaker 6: Huh?
- 2:07:19Speaker 2: What?
- 2:07:20Speaker 1: And then blink and he's gone again.
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:23Speaker 1: But don't worry, his influence finishes out the movie for us.
- 2:07:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that timeline is cool. It's like they go to
- 2:07:31Speaker 2: Ted Nugent's to get weapons. and right i think while
- 2:07:36Speaker 2: they're at ted's the filmmakers from new york make don
- 2:07:41Speaker 2: sign a contract that will back up all the promises
- 2:07:44Speaker 2: that don has been making that if this movie makes
- 2:07:47Speaker 2: money that they're going to get paid out of it
- 2:07:50Speaker 2: you know and.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: She and she even specifically mentions that they got to
- 2:07:55Speaker 1: like borrow a gun from ted when they left like
- 2:07:58Speaker 1: he showed them all the stuff while he was there,
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: but he let them, like, take a gun with them
- 2:08:02Speaker 1: as well.
- 2:08:03Speaker 2: That's right. And she was nervous. She goes, like, Don
- 2:08:07Speaker 2: and Jerry borrowed a gun from... Yeah, and so this
- 2:08:10Speaker 2: was right around the time that they signed that contract.
- 2:08:14Speaker 2: And you're like... And it's almost like Don... the whole
- 2:08:19Speaker 2: tone of the relationship between Don and the filmmakers changes
- 2:08:23Speaker 2: once they make him find that, you know?
- 2:08:27Speaker 1: It always been like teetering on that. Like there's at
- 2:08:30Speaker 1: least three points in the movie where they almost have
- 2:08:33Speaker 1: like a coup of like, okay, that's it. We're not
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: going to keep doing this unless you like, there's so like,
- 2:08:39Speaker 1: even in the very beginning, like it's the, it's the,
- 2:08:42Speaker 1: we don't want to sit around here and answer your
- 2:08:44Speaker 1: phones thing. Do you want us to make this movie
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: or not? So almost from the get go, they like
- 2:08:48Speaker 1: gang up on him. And then the girl's getting ready
- 2:08:51Speaker 1: whip on his camera and Jeff loses it. And it's
- 2:08:54Speaker 1: like pissed off and going to walk off. Yeah. So
- 2:08:57Speaker 1: then like, Jeff's ready to walk off the project and
- 2:09:01Speaker 1: is already so like, and then the other two are
- 2:09:03Speaker 1: behind him. So like, we already have these like several
- 2:09:05Speaker 1: other times when they're about ready to go because they're
- 2:09:09Speaker 1: Don and Jerry are so unprofessional, but we get to
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: that last part, like once we're putting it on paper
- 2:09:15Speaker 1: and you're going to sign it, like somehow that's a
- 2:09:17Speaker 1: little too far. Like they've, they ganged up against them
- 2:09:21Speaker 1: one too many times and now they've put a document
- 2:09:24Speaker 1: together and like somehow that's too much.
- 2:09:26Speaker 2: Right. Right. So Don does that. Then there's this big
- 2:09:30Speaker 2: blowout and then they're like, get out. And, uh, so
- 2:09:36Speaker 2: they're basically leaving the set and, And then, you know,
- 2:09:39Speaker 2: the biggest spoiler is like they start, the filmmakers start
- 2:09:43Speaker 2: shooting at them or shooting the gun off. Like- You just.
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: Hear them like running out of the building and she's like, oh,
- 2:09:50Speaker 1: they're firing at us. They're shooting at us. They're like, okay,
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: this has hit a whole new level now.
- 2:09:58Speaker 2: Yeah, it escalates pretty cool. And then just them at
- 2:10:00Speaker 2: the end, like pumping gas and they're afraid that they're
- 2:10:03Speaker 2: being followed by Don and his lackeys, you know?
- 2:10:09Speaker 1: Which seems way more organized than Don is capable of.
- 2:10:14Speaker 1: Putting together a cross country chase seems like a little
- 2:10:17Speaker 1: above when he can't even coordinate a night shoot. You know,
- 2:10:21Speaker 1: it's like somehow chasing people across the country seems a
- 2:10:24Speaker 1: little above that.
- 2:10:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it was pretty good, but
- 2:10:29Speaker 2: I'm kind of tense, you know, you're going like, man,
- 2:10:31Speaker 2: these guys are really kind of freaked out and praying
- 2:10:34Speaker 2: for their lives. And, um, It's great, yeah.
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: That's one of those moments that I didn't know what
- 2:10:41Speaker 1: I was getting into that first time watching this. And
- 2:10:44Speaker 1: the early one is, wait, did he just say he
- 2:10:47Speaker 1: cut off his fingers to make this movie? That's the
- 2:10:50Speaker 1: one where you're like, okay, this is the level of
- 2:10:52Speaker 1: crazy we're dealing with here. That's the early indicator of how...
- 2:10:57Speaker 1: deep this this group of people are right but by
- 2:11:00Speaker 1: the end when they're now firing guns at these people
- 2:11:03Speaker 1: for like walking off their shoot like now we've hit
- 2:11:06Speaker 1: like the the the pinnacle of like where this movie
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: is gonna go it's like when you end on the
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: run trying to get away from this crazy guy firing
- 2:11:14Speaker 1: Ted Nugent's gun at you like it's you can't there's
- 2:11:18Speaker 1: nowhere else to go like the movie just sort of
- 2:11:20Speaker 1: rounds out at that point because what else do you
- 2:11:23Speaker 1: do they just kept running I.
- 2:11:24Speaker 2: Guess yeah yeah right there's that weird well one thing
- 2:11:29Speaker 2: you know I mean that night was they had spent
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: like three hours like rigging up those lights you know
- 2:11:36Speaker 2: to shoot that scene and then that Jerry guy's like
- 2:11:39Speaker 2: looks like shit you know it's like you know I
- 2:11:43Speaker 2: mean I get why they were being huffy and you
- 2:11:45Speaker 2: know whatever but it was like it was just bad
- 2:11:48Speaker 2: it was just like a bad mojo but it's like
- 2:11:52Speaker 2: so I kind of get you know, I mean, it
- 2:11:56Speaker 2: just like escalated after that. And then, but yeah, then
- 2:11:59Speaker 2: there was that weird, you know, conversation with like the trucker,
- 2:12:03Speaker 2: you know, I don't know how it all factors in,
- 2:12:06Speaker 2: but it's like, you know, I'm just talking about, you know,
- 2:12:09Speaker 2: how much he hates being a trucker.
- 2:12:11Speaker 1: Well, that that's, that's what I was wondering in the
- 2:12:13Speaker 1: middle of this, you know, watching it again, I was
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: just like, this.
- 2:12:16Speaker 2: Is one of those.
- 2:12:17Speaker 1: And maybe it explains why, like we didn't see tons
- 2:12:21Speaker 1: more documentaries from this filmmaker. You know, it's like, I
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: wonder because I feel like this is such a interesting
- 2:12:28Speaker 1: and impressive like documentation of what's going on. But then
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: you look at like, okay, I'm like, so sometimes you
- 2:12:36Speaker 1: get people that are just really amazing documentary filmmakers and, and,
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: they bring the project together and they make this great film.
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: And then other times you get documentaries that are amazing footage,
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: but maybe the person just lucked into being at the
- 2:12:51Speaker 1: right place at the right time and had a camera,
- 2:12:53Speaker 1: you know? So it's like, that's where I feel like
- 2:12:56Speaker 1: we land with this one is like, we just lucked
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: into being in the middle of this and she just
- 2:13:01Speaker 1: kept shooting. And then, but you look at some of
- 2:13:04Speaker 1: the other pieces and I'm like, well this stuff with
- 2:13:07Speaker 1: the truck driver, like I actually think is really interesting
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: to hear this guy's take, but it doesn't really factor
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: into the movie exactly. So, and then also like she
- 2:13:17Speaker 1: does her really long monologue of, of explaining things over,
- 2:13:22Speaker 1: you know, just over top of things. They overdub in
- 2:13:25Speaker 1: this like monologue she does explaining what's going on, but
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: it's in, it's, paired up with the footage of those
- 2:13:33Speaker 1: kids playing with a box in the backyard. And I'm like,
- 2:13:36Speaker 1: what the hell is this footage we're watching?
- 2:13:39Speaker 2: Right. It's like, it's like, yeah, we, she didn't have access,
- 2:13:42Speaker 2: total access to like Don's house and shooting Don's wife,
- 2:13:48Speaker 2: you know, and shooting their, their attention about the movie.
- 2:13:51Speaker 2: So she just had to kind of like those kids
- 2:13:53Speaker 2: play in and kind of like talk about it. You know,
- 2:13:56Speaker 2: she just didn't quite have, she didn't get that footage,
- 2:13:59Speaker 2: you know?
- 2:14:00Speaker 1: And so that's like, I'm like, well, maybe she wasn't
- 2:14:04Speaker 1: like super hardcore worried about being a great documentary filmmaker
- 2:14:08Speaker 1: or we would have gotten more stuff down the line
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: from her. So maybe like, this is just one of
- 2:14:12Speaker 1: those like lucky moments that like the right person happened
- 2:14:15Speaker 1: to be there with a camera and she wanted to
- 2:14:17Speaker 1: shoot stuff. And like, we kind of win because we get,
- 2:14:21Speaker 1: you know, what she captured at the moment. But along
- 2:14:25Speaker 1: the way, you're like, maybe there's some things that are just...
- 2:14:29Speaker 1: we'll slap together in the middle of this production as well.
- 2:14:32Speaker 1: So you start to see the pieces of somebody that,
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: I don't know, maybe didn't know what she was doing
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: as a filmmaker at the time either, but luck getting
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: some really great footage.
- 2:14:41Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, definitely. Definitely. Yeah. It's, uh, I mean, I
- 2:14:46Speaker 2: think the movie works best as like, you know, um,
- 2:14:50Speaker 2: fly on the wall kind of like, and definitely a
- 2:14:53Speaker 2: time capsule of like seventies, you know, sensibilities and, um, uh,
- 2:15:01Speaker 2: you know, just, um, you know, uh, character study on Don,
- 2:15:06Speaker 2: you know? Um, but you know, there is so much
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: other weird stuff thrown in there that, uh, that isn't
- 2:15:12Speaker 2: germane to the main thrust of the story that, you know,
- 2:15:16Speaker 2: it does kind of, Oh, well, that's an interesting time capsule. Uh, look, there's, yeah.
- 2:15:21Speaker 1: The other stuff, like the, cause I mean, yeah, the
- 2:15:24Speaker 1: kids in the box doesn't really fit. The truck diver doesn't.
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: the stuff that fits I think is the really like
- 2:15:29Speaker 1: the interesting stuff that she just happened to catch was
- 2:15:32Speaker 1: things like the, the, the weird guy and his extra girlfriends.
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: Like that's, that's a nice fly on the wall. Like
- 2:15:39Speaker 1: time capsule of the seventies.
- 2:15:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:15:41Speaker 1: Even the weird, like romance, like watching her friend, the
- 2:15:44Speaker 1: sound guy hitting on this 18 year old girl. That's
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: the actress. Like those are, those are fun little moments
- 2:15:50Speaker 1: that I feel like do fit in the movie and work.
- 2:15:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:15:54Speaker 1: So here's the thing I want to ask you, I
- 2:15:56Speaker 1: guess to round this thing out, because I feel like
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: we've hit a lot of the bigger things going on
- 2:16:01Speaker 1: in this movie. But because it is like, it's something that,
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: I guess, regardless, I'll ask this question, but even more
- 2:16:10Speaker 1: so because the film quality isn't the best, you know,
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: it's hard to get, you know, good sound. So you're
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: never really going to get this kind of a movie
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: to break through with mainstream audiences. You're not going to
- 2:16:22Speaker 1: get like, somebody's mom to watch this movie.
- 2:16:24Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:16:25Speaker 1: But what would you think if they did like a
- 2:16:29Speaker 1: scripted narrative re-envisioning of this, something similar to like the
- 2:16:34Speaker 1: disaster artist?
- 2:16:36Speaker 3: Oh yeah. Yeah.
- 2:16:37Speaker 2: I mean, I think, you know, man, you know, kind
- 2:16:41Speaker 2: of give it the Ed Wood treatment or something like that.
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: I mean, I think, you know, that was, I, I
- 2:16:45Speaker 2: think that would be cool. You know, I mean, I
- 2:16:48Speaker 2: think it's a good story. And then you can like,
- 2:16:50Speaker 2: you know, get those scenes that they weren't able to
- 2:16:52Speaker 2: get for the documentary, you know? I mean, I like,
- 2:16:56Speaker 2: I like the purity of it, but I like, I
- 2:16:58Speaker 2: would like to see a narrative version of this.
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: That's the thing. I think, I think I I'm so
- 2:17:03Speaker 1: glad this version exists, but at the same time, I agree.
- 2:17:07Speaker 1: It's like, I feel like there's such a good dynamic
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: to what we're kind of examining here. And she only
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: has like certain scenes that she pieced together. So you really,
- 2:17:16Speaker 1: if you gave it to somebody like talented, you could
- 2:17:19Speaker 1: write the rest of those other scenes surrounding it. And
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: you could tell like, an interesting story of what, you know,
- 2:17:25Speaker 1: Don and Jerry are going through. Maybe we get a
- 2:17:27Speaker 1: little more like character development on our, our, you know,
- 2:17:31Speaker 1: our guys are Jeff and the filmmaker and the sound guy.
- 2:17:34Speaker 1: Like maybe we get a little more of them.
- 2:17:35Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:17:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: I think there really is an interesting way to do.
- 2:17:40Speaker 1: And plus then you would get something that would be like,
- 2:17:42Speaker 1: you wouldn't have to watch this blurry dubbed on the
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: VHS YouTube version. Like you could find a way to
- 2:17:48Speaker 1: make a very polished thing. that then maybe would hit
- 2:17:51Speaker 1: a much bigger audience.
- 2:17:54Speaker 2: No, they could make a real entertaining movie out of this,
- 2:17:56Speaker 2: you know. And then you could have those nice little
- 2:17:58Speaker 2: title cards at the end, you know, telling what happened
- 2:18:01Speaker 2: to everybody. Yeah.
- 2:18:02Speaker 1: Which I was, I mean, I guess because this got
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: pieced together and put out in 1980, we didn't know
- 2:18:08Speaker 1: all the rest of this. So like the stuff that
- 2:18:10Speaker 1: we're talking about, you know, the filmmaker didn't know was
- 2:18:13Speaker 1: going to happen. So you couldn't have those title cards,
- 2:18:16Speaker 1: you know, when this got put together in 1980, but yeah,
- 2:18:19Speaker 1: if you look doing it as like a retro kind
- 2:18:21Speaker 1: of thing now, like you could still keep everything in
- 2:18:24Speaker 1: the seventies and still like have that kind of like
- 2:18:26Speaker 1: fun aesthetic to play with and the references to play with.
- 2:18:30Speaker 1: But yeah, could have a little perspective now and be
- 2:18:32Speaker 1: like well you know this is what he ended up
- 2:18:34Speaker 1: doing and this is where they went so yeah it
- 2:18:37Speaker 1: would give you a little more license to take something
- 2:18:40Speaker 1: from it like the random things we've discussed in the
- 2:18:44Speaker 1: rest of this.
- 2:18:45Speaker 2: Episode absolutely absolutely and what Ted Nugent as himself I mean.
- 2:18:51Speaker 1: You know he would come back and it's not like
- 2:18:53Speaker 1: he looks any different he's looked that way probably again
- 2:18:57Speaker 1: since birth he probably came out with a giant beard
- 2:18:59Speaker 1: and long hair and like.
- 2:19:01Speaker 2: Yeah, there was maximum beard going on in this movie.
- 2:19:04Speaker 2: Everybody but Don had like some crazy facial hair going on.
- 2:19:08Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. And hopefully our camera person, but we don't
- 2:19:12Speaker 1: get much of her. We don't get to see her.
- 2:19:13Speaker 2: That's right. Rock on, man. Rock on. Yeah. That's a
- 2:19:21Speaker 2: crazy movie.
- 2:19:23Speaker 1: And I'm glad I got to watch it, because that's
- 2:19:27Speaker 1: what I was going to ask, because I hadn't heard
- 2:19:28Speaker 1: of it until you brought it up. So where did
- 2:19:30Speaker 1: you originally come in contact with it? Did you know
- 2:19:33Speaker 1: what it was when this person gave you the bootleg,
- 2:19:35Speaker 1: or how did you first hear of it?
- 2:19:37Speaker 2: No, just a random... It was a friend of mine,
- 2:19:42Speaker 2: I guess. I don't know how they heard about it,
- 2:19:44Speaker 2: but it was just like... yeah, a DVD they gave me. And, uh,
- 2:19:49Speaker 2: I said, I think it was like a, like a
- 2:19:52Speaker 2: birthday gift or something. I was like, happy birthday, Johnny.
- 2:19:54Speaker 2: You know, I was like, I have no, I don't
- 2:19:58Speaker 2: know where they got it or where they found it
- 2:20:00Speaker 2: or anything like that. But, uh, but it was just like,
- 2:20:03Speaker 2: you know, one of those random things.
- 2:20:05Speaker 1: And, um, Again, that is sort of the appeal of
- 2:20:07Speaker 1: this is like you, you get a bootleg copy, you
- 2:20:10Speaker 1: slide it to somebody and just like tap your hand on,
- 2:20:13Speaker 1: be like, watch this. And if you're the right kind
- 2:20:16Speaker 1: of person, like you will take to it like that.
- 2:20:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, definitely. I was going like, yeah, this is,
- 2:20:21Speaker 2: this is kind of like a, like American movie, but
- 2:20:24Speaker 2: you know, just so much more, you know, less polished
- 2:20:28Speaker 2: and just so much grittier, you know? And, uh, I
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: don't know. I just sort of, it's always stuck with
- 2:20:32Speaker 2: me just because of the, um, The culture shock elements
- 2:20:38Speaker 2: and Don's training.
- 2:20:42Speaker 1: The insanity of Don.
- 2:20:46Speaker 2: Right, exactly. Just how the story ends up. It's such
- 2:20:49Speaker 2: an interesting look at what regional independent filmmaking could have
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: been like at the time. Historic documents.
- 2:21:03Speaker 1: The snapshot of Don, I at least want to get
- 2:21:06Speaker 1: this in. This is maybe the best line in the movie.
- 2:21:08Speaker 1: As an independent project, your whole job is essentially just
- 2:21:13Speaker 1: hauling stuff from one place to the next.
- 2:21:15Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:21:15Speaker 1: And pretty early on, Don says to the rest of them, well,
- 2:21:18Speaker 1: I really shouldn't be carrying anything. I mean, I'm the director.
- 2:21:21Speaker 1: I'm carrying the entire weight of the film.
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: That was great. Oh, so yeah.
- 2:21:27Speaker 1: It's like, I'm carrying the weight of the film.
- 2:21:30Speaker 2: Yeah. It's like, oh, God.
- 2:21:32Speaker 1: Shut up and pick up a case, dude.
- 2:21:34Speaker 2: Come on, man. Seriously.
- 2:21:36Speaker 1: We don't have grips here. This is an indie project.
- 2:21:39Speaker 1: Come on, Don. Get it together.
- 2:21:40Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 2:21:43Speaker 1: But that puts in perspective. Like, that one line gives
- 2:21:46Speaker 1: you the perfect encapsulation of Don. Like, I'm making a
- 2:21:50Speaker 1: crappy independent B-movie, and yet, I think I've got the
- 2:21:54Speaker 1: weight of the world on my shoulders. Like, it really
- 2:21:58Speaker 1: does kind of tell you the kind of person that
- 2:22:00Speaker 1: he is.
- 2:22:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:22:01Speaker 1: That that line said so much that I'm like, yep, that's,
- 2:22:05Speaker 1: that's the movie in a nutshell right there.
- 2:22:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. It's funny. And if you like, listen into the,
- 2:22:11Speaker 2: into the mix there, you know, the camera guy goes like,
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: you know, really the camera guy shouldn't be here.
- 2:22:19Speaker 1: Technically that's not my job either.
- 2:22:21Speaker 2: Right. Right.
- 2:22:25Speaker 6: Right.
- 2:22:25Speaker 2: The one other thing I guess I could probably just
- 2:22:27Speaker 2: say about it is just what was going on at
- 2:22:29Speaker 2: the time of, just with movies was I can see
- 2:22:33Speaker 2: why they would want to make like something called the
- 2:22:36Speaker 2: demon lover, you know, cause we're just in that post exorcist,
- 2:22:41Speaker 2: you know, backlash, you know, where everybody was just churning
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: out a demon themed movies.
- 2:22:49Speaker 1: I mean, it is funny looking back, like cause stuff
- 2:22:53Speaker 1: you've never even heard of, but you can immediately go, Oh,
- 2:22:56Speaker 1: this is just a knockoff of the exorcist. Like the
- 2:22:58Speaker 1: exorcist made such a mark on the industry that everybody
- 2:23:01Speaker 1: then went, oh, how do we do that? I mean,
- 2:23:04Speaker 1: it was the same thing as like Star Wars. Like, well,
- 2:23:06Speaker 1: how do we set everything in space? After the exorcisms,
- 2:23:09Speaker 1: how do we put a demon in everything? How do
- 2:23:11Speaker 1: we make them sleep with the devil? How do we,
- 2:23:12Speaker 1: you know, like we had to put together something similar
- 2:23:15Speaker 1: to that so we can cash in on that.
- 2:23:17Speaker 2: Right. It must've just been, it seemed like money in
- 2:23:19Speaker 2: the bank, you know? I mean, just unrelated from the
- 2:23:24Speaker 2: same year, 1975, that they were filming this, I just
- 2:23:28Speaker 2: recently watched The Devil's Reign with William Shatner and Ernest Borgnine.
- 2:23:34Speaker 1: I pictured Ernest Borgnine on the cover as you said that.
- 2:23:37Speaker 1: I was like, I know that cover art. Ernest Borgnine's
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: face in red. I get it.
- 2:23:41Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's all about cult paranoia. Everybody's a devil worshiper,
- 2:23:47Speaker 2: kind of like Rosemary's Baby.
- 2:23:50Speaker 1: That was such a trend in the 70s.
- 2:23:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, absolutely. The satanic panic, I guess, going on
- 2:23:58Speaker 2: at the time. So I guess you're an independent filmmaker
- 2:24:04Speaker 2: out there in Michigan. You're going like, if we can
- 2:24:08Speaker 2: put some demons in this, this would be like.
- 2:24:11Speaker 2: It's a license to print money.
- 2:24:14Speaker 1: Well, and that's the interesting thing, too, is, like, as
- 2:24:18Speaker 1: delusional as Don is that they're making an epic, you know,
- 2:24:21Speaker 1: piece of filmmaking, it is so funny early on hearing Jerry,
- 2:24:26Speaker 1: who's just like, no, this is trash. Like, this is
- 2:24:28Speaker 1: just junk entertainment. Like, we just have to do this
- 2:24:31Speaker 1: to get through it and make some money so that
- 2:24:33Speaker 1: we can make another project and eventually make what we
- 2:24:36Speaker 1: want to make. But right now, we just have to
- 2:24:38Speaker 1: make this garbage, you know?
- 2:24:39Speaker 4: So, like, he has.
- 2:24:40Speaker 1: He has no artistic vision when it comes to that.
- 2:24:43Speaker 1: Like he could care less. He's just doing this as
- 2:24:46Speaker 1: an investment almost to be able to eventually be a
- 2:24:49Speaker 1: filmmaker for real down the line. But right now we
- 2:24:52Speaker 1: have to make this garbage.
- 2:24:54Speaker 2: That was funny. That was such a funny scene because
- 2:24:56Speaker 2: it's like Don going about how hard they're working on
- 2:24:58Speaker 2: it and how they're making a masterpiece. And then in
- 2:25:01Speaker 2: the next, brad jerry goes like yeah this is we're
- 2:25:04Speaker 2: making junk junk and.
- 2:25:06Speaker 1: Then they're standing next to each other so then like
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: you have to watch don try to like spin that
- 2:25:12Speaker 1: where he's like well i mean what he means is
- 2:25:14Speaker 1: you know it's like base entertainment like it's like he
- 2:25:16Speaker 1: starts trying to like put a nice shine up the
- 2:25:20Speaker 1: fact that he just called the movie they're making.
- 2:25:21Speaker 2: Garbage yeah pretty much just.
- 2:25:24Speaker 1: Like entertainment you know because people like popcorn movies and
- 2:25:27Speaker 1: you know like He just starts trying to, like, spin
- 2:25:30Speaker 1: it as hard as he can in that scene.
- 2:25:32Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, definitely. It was so great. Maybe two directors,
- 2:25:36Speaker 2: you know, unless you're Cohen, you know, just isn't always,
- 2:25:39Speaker 2: you know, eye to eye.
- 2:25:42Speaker 1: They definitely didn't, yeah, they didn't quite have a singular vision.
- 2:25:47Speaker 2: Or, yeah, vision.
- 2:25:51Speaker 3: At all.
- 2:25:51Speaker 1: At all.
- 2:25:54Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 2:25:55Speaker 1: Well, I'm glad you found out about this, and I'm
- 2:25:58Speaker 1: glad you suggested it so I could watch it. So
- 2:26:01Speaker 1: I'm hoping some other people watched it along the way
- 2:26:04Speaker 1: and got something out of this, too. So thank you
- 2:26:07Speaker 1: for discovering this lost gem.
- 2:26:09Speaker 2: There you go. There you go. Now on YouTube for
- 2:26:12Speaker 2: all to see. So, you know, just check it out.
- 2:26:15Speaker 2: You know, it's definitely, as Brian said, you know, it's
- 2:26:19Speaker 2: rough around the edges. But it definitely shows you a
- 2:26:23Speaker 2: side of filmmaking you don't usually get to see. Definitely
- 2:26:26Speaker 2: not in press kits and most things you're making of documentaries.
- 2:26:33Speaker 2: You won't see anything like this.
- 2:26:35Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:26:36Speaker 1: I think normal, everyday people who delve into a movie
- 2:26:40Speaker 1: once or twice a month aren't going to care about this.
- 2:26:42Speaker 1: But for movie geeks, this is the kind of exposure
- 2:26:46Speaker 1: you are this is the this is the fly on
- 2:26:47Speaker 1: the wall kind of thing that you want to be
- 2:26:49Speaker 1: able to see especially when it's in this time capsule
- 2:26:52Speaker 1: from the mid 70s so it's it's definitely an interesting
- 2:26:56Speaker 1: watch if nothing else.
- 2:26:57Speaker 2: Absolutely amen to that yeah yeah cool i'm glad i'm
- 2:27:01Speaker 2: glad you watched i'm glad you liked it.
- 2:27:03Speaker 1: Definitely thank you for discovering it at least as far
- 2:27:06Speaker 1: as i know and um Thanks for coming along. I thought,
- 2:27:10Speaker 1: you know, we were trying to come up with a
- 2:27:12Speaker 1: good reason to sit down and talk some more. And
- 2:27:14Speaker 1: I thought, well, you brought this up the first time.
- 2:27:17Speaker 1: So let's go ahead and have our discussion about it.
- 2:27:19Speaker 1: So I'm glad we got to come back around and
- 2:27:22Speaker 1: finish out the discussion on the The Demon Lover. Until
- 2:27:26Speaker 1: we get to the Scott Valentine. Eventually, where all this
- 2:27:30Speaker 1: is leading is My Demon Lover.
- 2:27:32Speaker 2: My Demon Lover is just one of the greatest movies
- 2:27:35Speaker 2: ever so you know great soundtrack great cast and the
- 2:27:39Speaker 2: misguided attempt to combine romantic comedy with 80s rubber reality
- 2:27:44Speaker 2: special effects.
- 2:27:47Speaker 1: Dude anything that spins off of Family Ties I am
- 2:27:50Speaker 1: sold so I'm definitely I was on board when I
- 2:27:56Speaker 1: watched it I watched it originally as soon as it
- 2:27:58Speaker 1: hit video and I'm I'm ready to revisit it. So
- 2:28:02Speaker 1: if you're willing to come along on this journey, we'll
- 2:28:05Speaker 1: pencil that for a future episode.
- 2:28:07Speaker 2: There we go. There we go. Yeah, sure, man. That'd
- 2:28:09Speaker 2: be great. Check that down again. Check it out. Awesome. Awesome.
- 2:28:14Speaker 2: Good deal. All right.
- 2:28:16Speaker 1: Thanks for doing this episode and you'll be back in
- 2:28:20Speaker 1: the future. I'm sure.
- 2:28:21Speaker 2: Sure. Sure, man. Just give me a call, man.
- 2:28:24Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:28:26Speaker 1: Thanks for joining in. Otherwise, that about does it. We
- 2:28:29Speaker 1: will return next time. Same geek feed. Thanks for listening.
- 2:28:57Speaker 12: Hopeless situation And the price I have to.
- 2:29:05Speaker 8: Pay Telling me now it's beyond me There's no choice
- 2:29:24Speaker 8: Diary I'm a madman, walk the line again today. Entrance
- 2:29:35Speaker 8: of confusion, the diary I'm here to stay.
- 2:30:54Speaker 3: A second-minded spirit.
- 2:30:56Speaker 8: Could never tell me lies Could I mistake myself for
- 2:31:01Speaker 8: someone Who lived behind my eyes? Will he escape my soul?
- 2:31:21Speaker 8: Or will he live in me? Is he trying to
- 2:31:29Speaker 8: get down?
- 2:31:30Speaker 12: Or trying to enter me? guitar solo Voices in the
- 2:32:51Speaker 12: darkness scream away my mental health.
- 2:32:56Speaker 8: Can I ask a question to help me save me
- 2:33:04Speaker 8: from myself? Everything on the pages of daily news. Thank you.
- 2:34:08Speaker 1: Discovering your dream even if you're making garbage.
- 2:34:13Speaker 2: Even if you don't know what the hell you're doing
- 2:34:15Speaker 2: keep you know just.
- 2:34:17Speaker 1: Keep cranking out garbage until something you make might be
- 2:34:20Speaker 1: a good accident there.
- 2:34:21Speaker 2: We go there we go by accident.
- 2:34:25Speaker 1: Eventually, you'll get to Hell Comes to Frogtown. You just
- 2:34:28Speaker 1: have to keep cranking it out.
- 2:34:30Speaker 2: You don't just fall out of bed and make Hell
- 2:34:32Speaker 2: Comes to Frogtown, man. That's like years of sacrifice.
- 2:34:35Speaker 1: You got to pay your dues to get to that point.
- 2:34:38Speaker 10: That's right, bro.
- 2:34:40Speaker 1: Nail down a star of that caliber. I mean, it's, yeah,
- 2:34:43Speaker 1: it's hard.
- 2:34:44Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Roddy Piper, you know, just doesn't fall into
- 2:34:48Speaker 2: your lap.
- 2:34:49Speaker 1: Yeah, he doesn't just walk onto your film set. Like,
- 2:34:51Speaker 1: you gotta pay your dues to get your Roddy Piper
- 2:34:54Speaker 1: to show up.
- 2:34:55Speaker 2: You gotta show that you know, you know, that you
