Latest / Worldview Matters With David Fiorazo / Neil Shenvi: Exposing, Refuting Wokeness, Cultural Marxism In America
Transcript
- 0:00No matter which direction you look in society today,
- 0:03there seems to be confusion, anxiety, anger,
- 0:06and downright irrationality.
- 0:09So definitions have changed.
- 0:11Values have been upended.
- 0:13People can no longer answer basic questions like,
- 0:16what is truth?
- 0:17What is a woman?
- 0:18What is marriage?
- 0:20What the heck happened?
- 0:22In their new book, Post Woke,
- 0:24asserting a biblical vision of race, gender, and sexuality.
- 0:29Dr. Neal Shenvie and Dr. Pat Sawyer
- 0:31offer an explanation for these monumental changes.
- 0:35Now, the common thread is found in critical theory,
- 0:38which is downstream from Marxist ideology.
- 0:42Well, we're blessed to have Neal Shenvie here today
- 0:45for this important discussion.
- 0:47That's next.
- 0:48Welcome to World View Matters, discussing controversial issues,
- 0:56discerning current events, defending biblical Christianity.
- 1:01No topic off limits.
- 1:04And now, here's your host, David Firazzo.
- 1:09Friends, family and Christ, thank you so much for tuning in.
- 1:11Very important podcast today, very important topic.
- 1:15You've heard a lot about woke and wokenness.
- 1:17And there's a chapter in this book, The Great of Wokening.
- 1:19I love it.
- 1:20But this is called Post Woke.
- 1:23We're going to get into the nuts and bolts of this
- 1:25with Dr. Neal Shenvie.
- 1:27The subtitle already gave it to you, but it's great asserting
- 1:31a biblical vision of race, gender, and sexuality.
- 1:36Now, Neal's bio is just really amazing.
- 1:39I mean, he's been to Duke and has got degrees from,
- 1:45I think, Princeton and Cal Berkeley in chemistry.
- 1:50And so Brainiac comes to mind for me because my goodness.
- 1:54So it's interesting that he writes about the content that he does.
- 1:57But he's happily married with four children that they homeschool.
- 2:01God bless him.
- 2:02I think a lot of our audience, as young enough to have kids,
- 2:06they do the same thing.
- 2:07But Dr. Shenvie, thank you so much for your time today.
- 2:09Good to see you.
- 2:11David, thank you so much for inviting me.
- 2:13Pleasure to be here.
- 2:14Yeah, thank you.
- 2:15Now, the first question right off the top
- 2:17after reading your bio.
- 2:19Oh, first of all, I want to mention your previous books.
- 2:21And you've got some amazing books out
- 2:23that I want to direct people to.
- 2:24It's not just Post Woke.
- 2:26But Jeff, bring those other book covers up critical dilemma.
- 2:29Another very important book.
- 2:31But I like this one too.
- 2:32A why believe?
- 2:34A reasoned approach to Christianity.
- 2:37So with that, I want to give you Neal's website.
- 2:40It's Shenvieapologetics.com.
- 2:45Shenvieapologetics.com.
- 2:47Christian apologetics from a home schooling.
- 2:50Theoretical chemist.
- 2:52And there's my first question, Neal.
- 2:55You've got this background in higher education and chemistry.
- 2:59And you're writing about things like social justice
- 3:03and critical theory and walkeness.
- 3:05So please explain for us how your background,
- 3:08what you went to school for, transitioned
- 3:10into what you're doing now and what you're writing about.
- 3:14That's an interesting long journey.
- 3:17So I became a Christian in graduate school studying
- 3:20Theoretical Chemistry, I got my PhD.
- 3:22And as soon as it became a Christian,
- 3:24I realized I wanted to share the gospel
- 3:26with my coworkers, my colleagues who
- 3:28were all intellectuals, often skeptics, atheist, agnostics.
- 3:32So I began studying Christian apologetics.
- 3:34And that led eventually to the publication
- 3:37of my first book, Why Believe, which
- 3:39was an attempt to, as the subtitle says,
- 3:42take a reasoned approach to Christianity.
- 3:45So I wanted to reach people who were kind of into STEM
- 3:48fields, science, and mathematics,
- 3:50and show them that the Christian faith is a rational faith.
- 3:54It is one rooted in truth, in reality, in reason and evidence.
- 3:58So that was the first book.
- 4:00And that book came out in 2022.
- 4:02But even the years before that, as I was finishing the first draft,
- 4:06I began to see something odd happening in our culture
- 4:09around the time of the rise of Black Lives Matter.
- 4:12So I finished that draft, and I began researching
- 4:15the topic of critical theory.
- 4:18And that's what was really a watershed
- 4:21because I met my friend and colleague, Dr. Pat Sawyer,
- 4:23my co-author, and he was getting a PhD in cultural studies
- 4:28studying the critical tradition.
- 4:31So he helped guide my thinking and my reading.
- 4:33And we came to collaborate and explain
- 4:36to the church why these ideas were rapidly
- 4:39infiltrating our culture and the church.
- 4:41This is like 2018 now, so a while ago.
- 4:44And ever since then, yeah, we've seen even more of a need
- 4:48for people, and especially Christians,
- 4:50to understand and reject these ideas.
- 4:53So you probably saw a lot in higher education.
- 4:56I mean, I'm looking at your bio again.
- 4:58You worked as a research scientist at Yale and at Duke.
- 5:02And you've published over 30 peer-reviewed scientific papers.
- 5:07And your writings on critical theory
- 5:10have been published as well in like the Gospel Coalition,
- 5:14Icon, Racheo Christie, which we interview 20 Groole
- 5:18and others from Racheo Christie.
- 5:20So I spoke with you about five years ago,
- 5:24maybe six years ago, on a radio talk show that I was doing.
- 5:27I think the topic I'm thinking must have been,
- 5:30maybe it was just before critical theory,
- 5:32maybe the Black Lives Matter was going on there.
- 5:34And I don't remember, but I think we spoke on these issues.
- 5:38And so I'm so thankful that you're writing about these
- 5:42and you can reach people that I would not be able to reach.
- 5:44But let's start with with wokeness.
- 5:48As it's expressed in our culture today,
- 5:50it's rooted in an area of knowledge known as critical theory.
- 5:54Now you wrote your previous book on critical theory.
- 5:56Would you go back and just explain that for us
- 5:59before we dive into your new book?
- 6:03Sure, we define wokeness as the cultural manifestation
- 6:06of ideas rooted in critical theory.
- 6:08So people see wokeness, they see drag queen story hour,
- 6:12they see Black Lives Matter, they see blues, clues,
- 6:16kids programming featuring drag queens singing songs
- 6:19about asexual transgender beavers.
- 6:22And this is all real stuff happening.
- 6:24And they know something's happening, they know it's woke.
- 6:27But what is wokeness?
- 6:28And we show in our books that wokeness actually
- 6:31is not just progressive, fattish zeitgeist,
- 6:34it's actually rooted in an intellectual tradition
- 6:37that goes back to Karl Marx.
- 6:39So we define wokeness or critical theory
- 6:41in terms of four big ideas, briefly, the social binary,
- 6:45the ideas that society is divided into oppressor groups
- 6:48and oppressed groups along lines of race, class,
- 6:51gender sexuality, Christianity, and host of other factors.
- 6:54And the two, that division happens
- 6:57because of what's called hegemonic power.
- 7:01That means that the ruling class, whether it's whites
- 7:04or men or heterosexuals, has imposed their ideas and values
- 7:09and habits on culture in a way that seems natural
- 7:13and normal, maybe even god ordained.
- 7:16But those values and norms really function
- 7:19to justify the power and the privilege of the ruling class.
- 7:23And all of us get brainwashed into these oppressive ideas.
- 7:27So how do we escape?
- 7:28ID number three is lived experience that oppressed people
- 7:32because of their lived experience of racism, sexism,
- 7:36and injustice can wake up, they can achieve
- 7:38a critical consciousness colloquially, they can get woke.
- 7:43And because of that, they can see reality as it actually
- 7:45is and they have the authority to explain to the rest
- 7:48of us who are still blind what reality is actually like.
- 7:52And then for the end goal of critical theory
- 7:54has always been social justice, which they define
- 7:57in terms of destroying this oppressed or oppressed binary
- 8:01by dismantling the systems and structures,
- 8:03which perpetuate the ruling class's power.
- 8:06So in a nutshell, critical theory today is all about
- 8:09those four ideas, social binary, hegemonic power,
- 8:12lived experience, and social justice.
- 8:15These are the four pillars of contemporary critical theory.
- 8:18Thank you for walking us through that.
- 8:20And let's just park for a moment on social justice
- 8:23because that is so misunderstood in the church today
- 8:26in the Christian church.
- 8:28I would go so far as to say social justice, quote,
- 8:31Christianity is apostasy.
- 8:34Because whenever you put a word in front of justice,
- 8:36there's a problem, right?
- 8:38And they're pushing the wrong things,
- 8:40maybe under good intentions, could you speak to that
- 8:44for a moment?
- 8:46The key question is who defines justice, what is justice?
- 8:50So certainly the Bible defines justice,
- 8:53it cares about justice, God commands us to seek justice.
- 8:57But what is justice?
- 8:59What is morality?
- 9:00What is right and wrong?
- 9:01We have to turn to God who is the foundation of justice
- 9:05to understand what that means.
- 9:07And the secular social justice movement
- 9:10has embraced a definition of justice and truth and morality
- 9:14that is written in these neo-Marxist categories,
- 9:17which Christians must reject.
- 9:18And just one reason why critical theory would see,
- 9:22let's say the gender binary, the idea that there are men
- 9:26and women male and female, they would see that idea
- 9:30as oppressive and in need of redress.
- 9:33They think social justice occurs when and only when
- 9:37we have torn down the systems and structures
- 9:39which perpetuate ideas like the gender binary.
- 9:42But obviously as Christians we would say no,
- 9:45the gender binary is not oppressive,
- 9:46it is God's design for our good and his glory.
- 9:51And it would be unjust to tear down the gender binary.
- 9:55So that's just one obvious example
- 9:57where we see a deep conflict between the assumptions
- 10:00of critical theory and the truths of the Bible.
- 10:03Yeah, I think a lot of people that may be fall for some
- 10:06of these maybe nice sounding ideas on the surface.
- 10:10I think maybe their literacy in the Bible
- 10:14is not where it should be in their discernment.
- 10:16But let's go to briefly, I didn't mention your book
- 10:20by the way, Pastor Kevin DeYoung said,
- 10:22if someone asks me what is wokeness and what is wrong with it,
- 10:26the first book I'll recommend is post-woke.
- 10:28So God bless you, you got a lot of great endorsements.
- 10:31I want to just mention some of the people
- 10:32because we have them on this podcast.
- 10:35I spoke to Dr. Irwin Lutzer, Melissa Doherty,
- 10:38she's been on the podcast and she's coming back
- 10:40in a month or so, Sean McDowell, Hillary Morgan Ferrer,
- 10:44great people, great apologists and authors
- 10:47and they put out great content.
- 10:49So in order for people that maybe have,
- 10:53maybe they're in the body of Christ
- 10:55and they're understanding some of these things,
- 10:58but maybe they still get seduced or deceived.
- 11:02You say that we live in a time of religious revival,
- 11:05but it's not Christianity.
- 11:08Other things have filled this void.
- 11:10If you take God out or if you kind of,
- 11:12you listen to these other ideas
- 11:14which what's happening in government education,
- 11:16Hollywood, media, and on and on and on,
- 11:19they remove God, something fills it in wokeness, Marxism.
- 11:24These are definitely things that are popular today.
- 11:27I was gonna ask you, what do you mean when you say
- 11:30we're in a time of religious revival,
- 11:32but it's not Christianity.
- 11:33Are the other things are going on?
- 11:37Yeah, I think you can view wokeness.
- 11:39Make the case you can treat wokeness
- 11:41as a worldview or a pseudo religion.
- 11:44It gives you a sense of meaning and purpose,
- 11:46community, identity.
- 11:48It talks about who you are, what human beings are,
- 11:51our big problem in life, which is oppression,
- 11:53had to solve the problem, activism,
- 11:55sense of purpose.
- 11:56People wanna be on the right side of history, identity.
- 12:00You can identify with your demographic group.
- 12:02I can see myself in terms of race, gender, sexuality.
- 12:05These are all identity factors
- 12:07that really are the core of my being.
- 12:08So it's giving you an alternate vision of everything,
- 12:12which is why you can't really hold onto it
- 12:15and Christianity together.
- 12:16They will compete for your allegiance.
- 12:18So in the book, we make it clear that many people
- 12:21get drawn towards wokeness for good
- 12:24and understandable reasons.
- 12:25They don't like injustice, they don't like racism.
- 12:29They care about the vulnerable.
- 12:30These are good Christian impulses,
- 12:32but they're being redirected in a bad and dangerous direction.
- 12:36So in our book, we spent a lot of time affirming, hey,
- 12:39we also oppose racism.
- 12:42We also believe that men and women
- 12:43are beautifully made and wonderfully made
- 12:45and made in God's image.
- 12:46We have firm these things as Christians.
- 12:48So we're not trying to diminish your thirst and hunger
- 12:52for true justice, for true love and community, yes.
- 12:57But we want to channel it in biblical directions
- 12:59and show you how the Bible fulfills those longings
- 13:02and critical theory does not.
- 13:04Amen.
- 13:05So what do you see as the catalyst for this cultural shift
- 13:09away from Christianity?
- 13:11Because you cite that in the book, and I absolutely agree.
- 13:13We've had George Barna and others, Adam Rasmussen
- 13:17and others on this podcast.
- 13:18There is definitely a cultural shift,
- 13:21even non-Christian polling like Pew and Gallup.
- 13:24It's very clear over the many decades.
- 13:26But what do you think is the catalyst for this?
- 13:31I think the perfect storm.
- 13:32I think that society has undergone lots of changes,
- 13:35especially since the sexual revolution.
- 13:37I think there's lots of factors.
- 13:39And such a lot of just studying this.
- 13:40One factor is that a lot of people
- 13:42are growing up in broken families coming out of divorces.
- 13:46And family dynamics will shape your view of God.
- 13:49If God presents himself as father to us,
- 13:51well, if you've had a bad father or an absent father,
- 13:54of course, you're going to feel distanced from God.
- 13:57You feel like, well, my father was a terrible person
- 13:59and left me.
- 14:00Why should I seek the love of a heavenly father?
- 14:03That's one big factor.
- 14:05Another factor is that the sexual revolution also
- 14:09led people to seek fulfillment in romance.
- 14:13And they felt that could have filled this existential void
- 14:16that is left when you remove Christianity.
- 14:18Again, they longed for love.
- 14:20Why?
- 14:21Because human beings do urine for love.
- 14:22But they didn't seek that love in a creator.
- 14:25They now sought that love in other human beings.
- 14:29And then I think finally, I'd say that education is
- 14:32like a huge role.
- 14:33So the left began its long march of the institutions
- 14:37in the 60s, and they have managed
- 14:39to largely control education in the United States
- 14:43from cave really through grad school.
- 14:47So a lot of it, if you send your kids to any school,
- 14:50including, unfortunately, Christian schools
- 14:53and Christian colleges, they will often
- 14:55be exposed to these ideas.
- 14:57You can't keep them out.
- 14:58And even if you say, well, they're not going to college,
- 15:00well, even in the workplace, they're
- 15:02going to encounter woke ideas.
- 15:04And woke ideas, as we show in the book,
- 15:06are at their foundation atheistic.
- 15:09They just, even if they leave a room
- 15:11for some kind of spiritual supernatural something,
- 15:15they don't think about that when it comes to social theorizing.
- 15:18So he's just, God is not there as part of the equation.
- 15:22And so this convergence of many different factors,
- 15:25but all of them have pushed people away
- 15:27from traditional Christianity and towards other forms
- 15:29of thinking, including those shaped by critical theory.
- 15:33Yeah, definitely an agenda.
- 15:36Most of us would call it a demonic agenda that's taking place.
- 15:39You call it a perfect storm.
- 15:40And there is a lot of factors involved.
- 15:43But thank you shout out to Antonio Gramsey
- 15:45in the long march through the institutions.
- 15:47They've been very successful.
- 15:48It's evil.
- 15:49It's demonic, but they've been very successful
- 15:52at this long term plan.
- 15:54But when we come back from our very brief pause
- 15:56with Dr. Neal Shenvi, I'm going to ask him,
- 15:58he says one of the most important steps in any discussion
- 16:01is defining your terms.
- 16:04We'll talk about that in just a minute.
- 16:06Register now for the World View Matters Conference

- 16:38That's worldviewmattersconference.com.
- 16:42The book is post woke.
- 16:44And again, friends, you can get it.
- 16:46It links to Amazon as well at Neal's website.
- 16:49That's Shenviapologetics.com, SHENVIapologetics.com.
- 16:56So Neal, the left has done a very good job, very scheming,
- 17:02at changing language, changing meanings.
- 17:05And so you say one of the most important steps
- 17:08in a discussion on any of these things
- 17:10is defining the terms.
- 17:12Explain that a little bit and how we can do that.
- 17:15This is Rampin, our society today.
- 17:17Words no longer have their traditional dictionary definitions.
- 17:20I mean, literally you can go to the dictionary, look up words,
- 17:22and we're using them, doesn't reflect their dictionary usage.
- 17:26So you have to ask people, what do you mean by that
- 17:29with almost every term, whether it's woman or animal, anything?
- 17:34I think the fountain head of critical theories,
- 17:36many errors, is the definition of oppression.
- 17:39So critical theorist in the 60s redefined oppression
- 17:42to not refer to tyranny in justice and cruelty,
- 17:46which is how oppression is defined in the Bible, say,
- 17:49or in the dictionary.
- 17:50Instead, they redefined oppression to refer to any time
- 17:54a ruling class, whites, men, heterosexuals, Christians,
- 17:58supposedly impose their values on culture.
- 18:00That is oppression.
- 18:01The assumption there is that there are no transcendent norms
- 18:05or values that are actually got ordained.
- 18:08All values, all norms, all symbols, all habits,
- 18:11are actually a mere power plays that are engaged
- 18:14in by the rulers of society.
- 18:17So that's how they redefine oppression.
- 18:18Now, why is that important?
- 18:20Because critical theorists will say things like this,
- 18:22don't you care about oppression?
- 18:24And you say, well, yeah, as a Christian, the Bible says
- 18:27that we're supposed to oppose oppression,
- 18:29that Jesus himself was oppressed and afflicted.
- 18:32So sure, I'm against oppression.
- 18:33And they'll say great, because the gender binary is oppression.
- 18:37And you say, wait, wait, wait, what just happened?
- 18:39Exactly.
- 18:40They've redefined the word to include anytime
- 18:43the ruling class, whether it's again anyone,
- 18:46who supposedly has power, has imposed their values on culture.
- 18:49But we have to stop right away and say, time out.
- 18:52You're assuming there are no actual good values
- 18:57that are God's standards, that he actually built into the creation
- 19:02and that are not minor, yours or they're not white
- 19:04or black or male or female, they're gods.
- 19:07And they are good.
- 19:08We should uphold those standards.
- 19:10So we have to be careful, because otherwise,
- 19:12they'll play this linguistic shell game
- 19:14where they're changing definitions.
- 19:15You're not sure what happened one wrong.
- 19:17Another example will be justice.
- 19:19What do you mean by justice?
- 19:20I mean everyone getting what they deserve.
- 19:22God deserves all the glory and justice is giving it to him.
- 19:25My neighbor deserves my love.
- 19:27That means giving it to him.
- 19:28If you work, you deserve your wages.
- 19:30This is what justice means in the Bible.
- 19:33But in critical theory, justice means essentially
- 19:36all groups having equal outcomes, no matter what.
- 19:39It means dismantling these systems
- 19:41as opposed to produce racism, sexism,
- 19:44classism, et cetera, dismantling all those norms
- 19:46that produce the social binary.
- 19:48These are two totally different understandings of justice.
- 19:51So for example, when I see something like justice
- 19:56would include supporting traditional marriage.
- 19:59It is just that a man and a woman are united in matrimony,
- 20:03because that creates a family, it propels society,
- 20:06it's good for human beings.
- 20:08They would say that is injustice that marriages unjust
- 20:12because it perpetuates heterosexual norms.
- 20:15So once again, they've redefined justice
- 20:17and from that, flows a plethora of errors.
- 20:21You can go on to what is a woman or what is truth.
- 20:25All of these basic concepts have been redefined.
- 20:28So you have to define your terms.
- 20:30Great question.
- 20:31What do you mean by that?
- 20:32And another one is how did you come to that conclusion?
- 20:35Another great question.
- 20:36Because my goodness, let me recommend Webster's 1828
- 20:40dictionary guys if you don't already use that.
- 20:43So Neil, there's a quote from your book that says,
- 20:46a person who offers love at the expense of truth
- 20:50is not truly loving.
- 20:53And yet, Christians can also be confused
- 20:58or deceived about these things.
- 20:59So how are these critical theories and these wrong ideas
- 21:04infiltrating the church?
- 21:05So how does that happen?
- 21:08It's often through compassion, because of course,
- 21:11Christians are called to be compassion.
- 21:13But again, compassion's been redefined
- 21:15to mean basically affirmation.
- 21:17Compassion means telling people what makes them happy
- 21:19and what they want to hear.
- 21:21And Christians, but Christians don't realize that again,
- 21:23the game being played and fall for that,
- 21:25we have to step back and say, what is real compassion?
- 21:27Real compassion means doing what's best for the person,
- 21:30feeling bad for them, wanting to help them
- 21:32and therefore doing what's good for them.
- 21:34That doesn't always correspond to what they think
- 21:37is good for themselves.
- 21:38Example, if you have kids, you know that what would make them
- 21:42happy in the moment and what is good for them
- 21:45are very different, very, very different often.
- 21:47My three-year-old might say, I would love to have
- 21:51a whole cake tonight for dinner.
- 21:53And I say, because I love you, not in spite of my love for you,
- 21:56because of my love for you, I will not give you what you want.
- 21:59I'll give you what you actually need.
- 22:01The example in the book that we use is Detransitioners.
- 22:05These are often young women who, in later in life,
- 22:09decided they were men,
- 22:10transitioned their gender identity to male,
- 22:13sometimes took hormones, sometimes had surgeries,
- 22:16and after a year is sometimes said,
- 22:18this is not working, I made a mistake,
- 22:20and treat transition to back to their birth gender
- 22:23and said, no, I really am a woman.
- 22:25And many of these women are now coming forward and saying,
- 22:28what went wrong?
- 22:29My whole life, everyone around me did nothing
- 22:32but give me affirmation.
- 22:33They told me, yes, you are a man.
- 22:35Yes, we support you, we love you, you're brave and stunning.
- 22:38And now looking back, they made a mess of their lives.
- 22:40They sometimes harm their bodies,
- 22:42and they actually, their testimony is this,
- 22:44why did no one actually love me enough
- 22:47to tell me the truth?
- 22:48Where were the people who cared about me truly,
- 22:51and were willing to speak hard truth to me?
- 22:54It's truth that I needed to hear,
- 22:55even though I would have rejected it at the time.
- 22:58The example we use is if you have an anorexic young woman
- 23:01who is starving herself to death,
- 23:03and she says, if you love me, you'll call me fat.
- 23:07I know I'm fat, I believe I'm fat,
- 23:09everybody else tells me I'm fat,
- 23:10because they love me, why won't you call me fat?
- 23:13And then we say to her, honey,
- 23:15it's because I love you that I will not lie to you.
- 23:18You are not fat, you are killing yourself out of my love.
- 23:21I will have real compassion and tell you
- 23:24the real truth about yourself,
- 23:25and I will do anything to show you the way
- 23:28that you should live that will bring you
- 23:30actual peace and happiness.
- 23:32Amen.
- 23:33Excellent example about someone who's anorexic,
- 23:35and friends, if we just understand as a Christian,
- 23:38God's order and God's design, creation, male, female,
- 23:44marriage, family, gender falls into that too.
- 23:47We need to know the truth of what the Bible teaches
- 23:49on these things, and it's very clear
- 23:51there's no ambiguity, no gray area in scripture.
- 23:53I wanna jump to something,
- 23:55we're under four minutes already,
- 23:56and there's so many other questions I had for you,
- 23:58but this goes by really fast.
- 24:00One of them I wanted to ask you about race
- 24:02has been a big issue and a dividing issue,
- 24:05even in the church, but I wanna ask you about statistics
- 24:09that people don't often cite, but it's true,
- 24:12you don't hear the media talking about them.
- 24:14So do the stats support an epidemic of police brutality
- 24:19against blacks in this country,
- 24:22because the media would sell blacks
- 24:24as one of the oppressed groups,
- 24:25and they're the ones that are being targeted by police,
- 24:28but that's really not true, is it?
- 24:31No, they did a series of different stories,
- 24:33so we have all the data in the book you look at,
- 24:36but one important statistic or comparison is that
- 24:39the chance of an unarmed black man being killed by police
- 24:43is roughly the same as the chance of him being killed
- 24:45by lightning, so it's extremely rare.
- 24:47Lightning.
- 24:48And even at the height, yeah, lightning,
- 24:50the height of black lives matter,
- 24:51even then roughly the same amount of whites
- 24:54and blacks were being killed by police,
- 24:56and almost all of them, not all of them,
- 24:58almost all of them were in the process of committing a crime,
- 25:03were violent, resisting arrest, and had a weapon.
- 25:06So if you look at the number of either black or anyone
- 25:09who's being killed by police,
- 25:11the vast majority are armed,
- 25:13and an alternate and wished police in committing a crime.
- 25:17So if you take those away,
- 25:18there are some tragic cases absolutely
- 25:20of both white and black men being killed by police.
- 25:23Unjustly, we should absolutely say no, that's wrong.
- 25:27We want to treat that in the courts
- 25:28and prosecute people that have actually committed a crime,
- 25:31whether civilians or police officers,
- 25:34they both can commit crimes.
- 25:36But the data does not actually support the idea
- 25:39that black men are being killed indiscriminately by police,
- 25:41that just is not true.
- 25:43It's a tiny fraction of percent.
- 25:46And even the vast majority of black men,
- 25:48obviously didn't even encounter police
- 25:50in the given year, much less in any way harmed by them.
- 25:53So actually, so the last thing,
- 25:55if you ask black people, do you want more or fewer police
- 25:59in your neighborhood, it's split like 20, want more,
- 26:0460% want exactly the same and 20% want less,
- 26:06but it's not like this overwhelming number
- 26:08of black people who don't want police around.
- 26:10They want police like all of us do.
- 26:13This is really amazing, the lies and propaganda
- 26:15that the loudest voices seem to get through.
- 26:18Even Christians, again, can be deceived,
- 26:21but that's another point I want to end with this.
- 26:23We only have a minute left, Neil.
- 26:25A lot of people just don't want to touch on any of these issues,
- 26:28maybe because they don't know how to express them
- 26:30or defend the faith, but that's a problem
- 26:32because you read about that in your book too.
- 26:33So why do you say that the Christian
- 26:35who wants to reject any kind of cultural
- 26:37or political involvement, that's not a good thing,
- 26:40really brief in a minute.
- 26:43Sure, number one works out in light.
- 26:44Jesus expects us to stand for truth
- 26:47and for the sake of our neighbor,
- 26:48our neighbor is being hurt by these lies.
- 26:50If we love our neighbor, we'll speak the truth
- 26:53out of love for him, not hatred.
- 26:55And second, these ideas have implications for theology
- 26:58and people's eternal destinies.
- 26:59If they're rejecting God's goodness,
- 27:01they're rejecting His understanding of oppression
- 27:04and justice, they're rejecting the truth,
- 27:06that will lead them to eternal death.
- 27:08We want them to hear the gospel
- 27:10and for them to repent and believe the gospel
- 27:12and be saved because we love them.
- 27:14You can't just separate out cultural stuff
- 27:17and theological stuff, in this case, they're related.
- 27:20So again, we're not putting culture or politics,
- 27:22the culture we're first, we're putting the gospel first,
- 27:25because of that, we have to get involved
- 27:27in these cultural issues.
- 27:29Amen.
- 27:30Thank you, Neil.
