- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's happening to everybody? Welcome into this edition of
- 0:11the Czech O Deily Andrew Decheco here rounding out our
- 0:16positional preview series on the inside the Birds platform with
- 0:19the cornerback position. And you should feel really good about
- 0:23where the Eagles stand at this position group because there's
- 0:27intriguing players vying for roster spots. There's also a couple
- 0:32of players that I find to be really interesting that
- 0:34are vying for a starting spot, which we'll get into momentarily,
- 0:38but we're not going to spend a ton of time really,
- 0:42you know, delving deep into the outlook of Queenyawn Mitchell
- 0:45or Cooper dejen but we'll talk about them for a
- 0:48moment before we start to explore the other options behind
- 0:51those players. Quenyon Mitchell was barely thrown at last season,
- 0:57which is obviously a testament to his ability and growth
- 0:59as a play and what teams were seeing on the field.
- 1:02But this is a guy who uses his length to
- 1:05his ability. He leaned into his resource and Darius Slay,
- 1:09who was pretty much a big brother to quinnyon last season.
- 1:13The numbers don't suggest it, but he should have been
- 1:16an All Pro. He should have gotten more recognition league
- 1:20wide for what he was able to do, because when
- 1:22you're that young and new to the NFL and you're
- 1:25playing a very challenging position, it really shouldn't be overlooked
- 1:30when you're able to almost erase one side of the field,
- 1:33which also suggests that the arrow is trending up and
- 1:36he can even get to another level this season. Although
- 1:40he's not going to be taken the NFL by storm,
- 1:42teams will throw his way now and now we have
- 1:45to look and see how he responds to that. But
- 1:49I mean, I think I can't say enough good things
- 1:50about what he's able to do from that cornerback position.
- 1:55Doesn't talk a ton. When he's on the field, you
- 1:57see that he exudes confidence, and that is one of
- 2:01the hallmarks at that position. If you ever run into
- 2:03a corner and they don't have that kind of confidence,
- 2:07they don't carry themselves with that swagger, you should be
- 2:10concerned because that's one of those positions where you have
- 2:13to have the mindset of I'm ready for the challenge.
- 2:16I'm not going to back down, and it's mono imano.
- 2:19You're on an island. So quinnyaon Mitchell in my opinion
- 2:23will be recognized this year more widely as one of
- 2:27the better cornerbacks in the NFL. That also brings us
- 2:31to Cooper Degene. Now, Cooper Degene is already one of
- 2:34the best nickel corners in the NFL. He also has
- 2:37a lot of versatility, which is appealing. He's able to
- 2:41kick outside when the Eagles are in base and play
- 2:43outside corner. Vic Vanjo even really was effusive in his
- 2:48praise about the prospects of how his skill set would
- 2:52translate to safety, and he said that his skill he
- 2:55has the skill set for it. So he's probably gonna
- 2:58wear a lot of hats this year, but his primary
- 3:01focus at least is what I'm expecting it to be
- 3:03nickel one Leagles don't really have a viable backup at
- 3:06that position. But also it's a starting position in today's NFL,
- 3:11and you have to be responsible for run fits. You
- 3:14have to know what all three levels of the defense
- 3:16is doing. You have to have the short area of
- 3:18quickness and the reaction time to break on footballs, and
- 3:22of course I discipline. You don't have the sideline to
- 3:24your advantage. I say all that to say that not
- 3:26every player is equipped to handle that position and play
- 3:30it at a high level because of the different demands.
- 3:33So Cooper Degene I think is ideally suited for there
- 3:36right now. Where he ends up long term, we'll have
- 3:38to wait and see. But I've also gotten questions whether
- 3:42or not you know team, you know, whether or not
- 3:44you are concerned about Cooper Degene kind of making the
- 3:48rounds this offseason and doing interviews and you know, pretty
- 3:52much showing up anywhere. I would not be concerned because
- 3:57Cooper Degene, just like everybody on this Eagles team, has
- 4:00had the opportunity to speak since the Super Bowl. They've
- 4:03all turned the page. They all know that they need
- 4:06to focus on the task at hand and what's important.
- 4:10So don't read too much into what a player is
- 4:13doing off the field or maybe hone in on that
- 4:17as a distraction. I come July twenty second, July twenty third,
- 4:22all that's going to be forgotten. Everybody on this team
- 4:25has a like minded goal and there's never going to be,
- 4:28at least in my opinion, anything that's going to detract
- 4:31from that. So I think the Cooper de Gene, and
- 4:35he's probably gotten a little bit more recognition. Oddly enough,
- 4:38despite Quenya Mitchell playing the whole season, but both players
- 4:43I think are going to take off like a rocket
- 4:45ship this year. Now there's film on both so that
- 4:48should be noted. But I just think that you take
- 4:51another year of experience, another year in the film room,
- 4:54another year of working with cornerbacks coach Roy Anderson and
- 4:57defensive backs coach Christian Parker, and both players should be
- 5:01able to elevate in year two. Now there's a big
- 5:05position battle that's set to unfold when camp opens, and
- 5:10it really has started already in OTAs, and that's going
- 5:12to be between third year cornerback Keeley Ringo and veteran
- 5:18free agent addition a Dori Jackson. Now, Dori Jackson has
- 5:22played in a number of different number of different games
- 5:25in his career. He has a lot more experience. He
- 5:30has played with the Titans, the Giants, and now joins
- 5:34the Eagles about five to ten so he doesn't necessarily
- 5:37have the same height or length as Ringo, but he
- 5:40is quick and he has the long speed, and there's
- 5:43also something to be said for experience. Look, it is
- 5:47going to be a legitimate competition. Vic Fangiel pretty much
- 5:51admitted as much when he spoke during the spring, and
- 5:54I kind of see them on an even playing field relatively,
- 5:57But I think of Dori Jackson one way or the other,
- 6:00or whether he wins the job or whether he doesn't,
- 6:02can kind of fill a critical role in terms of
- 6:05being that first outside corner off the bench, just giving
- 6:09some experience to a youth infused position room. So we'll
- 6:13have to wait and see how he goes there, But
- 6:15he seems to be very confident and somebody who has
- 6:20a mindset that really combats complacency. So I don't think
- 6:24that he's going to rest on his laurels or go
- 6:27in there with the belief of I have X amount
- 6:29of years of experience, so I should be able to
- 6:32kind of go in there and make light work of this.
- 6:34I don't think that he's of that mindset. And then
- 6:36that also brings us to Kilee Ringo, who enters his
- 6:39third season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Drafted in the fourth
- 6:42round back in twenty twenty three, started the final four
- 6:46games of the twenty twenty three season, and now there's
- 6:48a big question about whether or not he's ready to
- 6:51make that leap after only playing three hundred and eleven
- 6:55defensive snaps over his first two seasons, believe you only
- 6:58accounted for eleven percent of the defense snaps last year.
- 7:02I go back to this often, but in training camp
- 7:04he was trading off spots with Isaiah Rodgers with the
- 7:07first team. Then eventually he was overtaken by Rogers, and
- 7:12then of course Quinya Mitchell leapfrog both players, and really
- 7:16Keeley Ringo didn't factor much into the defensive equation as
- 7:20the eleven percent of the snaps, which should suggest but
- 7:23he did carve out a role as a gunner and
- 7:26became one of the NFL's best gunners. He appeared on
- 7:29the Pro Bowl ballot and he also got an All
- 7:32Pro vote for that role. So that is something that
- 7:35obviously caught the eye of many across the league. But
- 7:39now he has a golden opportunity, perhaps better than any
- 7:42of his first two seasons, to carve out a significant
- 7:45role on defense, and he finds himself going mono I mono,
- 7:49head to head with adri Jackson, with Kiehi Ringo. It's
- 7:52never been about athleticism, about length, about speed. It's been
- 7:59about technique, and what I observed last summer was a
- 8:03player who got overly handsy at times when the pads
- 8:06came on Grabby and so what we've learned from Vic
- 8:10Fangio and what he tends to look for from his
- 8:12personnel is assigmon sound players that they're not necessarily feast
- 8:17or famine. They are going to play fundamentally sound, assignment
- 8:21sound within the confines of his defense. So kind of
- 8:25like what we talked about with Sidney Brown to a
- 8:27little bit to a lesser degree here, Ringo needs to
- 8:30make sure he's honing in on his technique so that
- 8:33it matches and mirrors the athletic qualities. And if he's
- 8:36able to do that, he should be able to win
- 8:38this role pretty easily. Obviously, the Eagles would love nothing
- 8:41more than for Kiely Ringo to go out there and
- 8:43win this job. They've invested a couple of years of
- 8:46development in him. Killey Ringo is a great kid, and
- 8:49he works hard, and he's gotten a lot of praise
- 8:51from teammates over the past couple of seasons. Let's see
- 8:54if he's able to put it together, because this is
- 8:57an opportunity unlike any that he's had in his first
- 9:00couple of seasons here in Philadelphia. Eli Rix is another
- 9:06player who's on the ninety man roster. This is going
- 9:11into his third summer with the Philadelphia Eagles. This is
- 9:14someone who had a relatively quiet training camp last year.
- 9:18But I always got the sense that Vic Fangio liked
- 9:20what Eli brought from a coverage perspective. He's not an
- 9:23overly physical player. He's not able to mix it up
- 9:26against the run or anything like that, though he is willing.
- 9:29But I think that's also why he always played in
- 9:32seven games. It was never really able to stick on
- 9:34special teams. That's not really his expertise. But what he
- 9:37does give you is a young cover corner, which is
- 9:40obviously appealing. And if you noticed last season, when Eagles
- 9:44had to do all of their different roster tagling throughout
- 9:46the year, Eli Rix's roster spot was never in jeopardy.
- 9:50He remained on the fifty three all season long, which
- 9:53obviously tells you that they like what they've seen in him,
- 9:55and they were reluctant to part with them, because when
- 9:58you do part ways with a younger player like that,
- 10:01who has that coverage ability and the length and has
- 10:04that pedigree, it's unlikely that you're able to kind of
- 10:07sneak them through waivers and get them on the practice squad.
- 10:10So it was likely that they would have lost Rix.
- 10:13It's not a slam dunk, but it's likely they would
- 10:16have lost him had he been one of the pieces
- 10:19that was, you know, sort of a casualty when they
- 10:22had to make roster spots due to injuries and other alterations.
- 10:26But I do get the sense that the Eagles coaching
- 10:28staff likes him. They're going to want to take a
- 10:30longer look at him right now, and we'll have to
- 10:33wait and see how he fits. I mean, I think
- 10:35best case scenario for Eli this year would probably be
- 10:38stepping into that Isaiah Rodgers role. Last year I talked
- 10:41about adri Jackson, but Eli Rix won. He's cost effective,
- 10:46he's young, and he can play on the outside, and
- 10:49he can play inside as well. Though he is an
- 10:52outside corner by trade and was really pressed into service
- 10:56out of necessity as a rookie at Nickel. But he's
- 10:59an outside corner, and I think that he does carry
- 11:02some intrigue and some appeal, and he'll have to really
- 11:07go out there and leave no doubt because this is
- 11:10a crowded room and he has to continue to take
- 11:13this next step forward and get better every season. But
- 11:17those who have followed my work know that I've talked
- 11:19to Eli quite a bit over the past. Well really
- 11:22has a rookie He was the rookie Diary subject, but
- 11:24also last season as well checking in with him. I
- 11:27think very highly of him and I can't wait to
- 11:29see what he's able to do with his second year
- 11:31in this defense. Then we have mac McWilliams, who the
- 11:37Eagles drafted out of UCF on Day three last eight
- 11:40or this April, and that is I mean and ninety
- 11:44one pounds. He can play outside, but he's probably best
- 11:47suit to play nickel at this level. So we talked
- 11:51about they're not necessarily being a bona fide backup if
- 11:56they have to move Cooper Dejen elsewhere at NICOL, so
- 12:00I think someone like a mac McWilliams could eventually fit there.
- 12:04We have to learn a little bit more about him
- 12:06this summer, but he is a feisty player with good
- 12:09athletic traits that I think is going to get obviously
- 12:11a long look. He's going to make the team barring
- 12:13something unforeseen, and probably really have a substantial role on
- 12:18special teams. But as I also see him factoring in
- 12:22maybe in situational packages, depending on how quickly he is
- 12:25able to grasp this system and be that backup Nickel,
- 12:29the Cooper Degene. But there's an interesting name here as
- 12:33well who has gotten some looks as the number two
- 12:36Nickel and OTAs. He was on the practice squad last season.
- 12:40He had one of the main lockers which goes across
- 12:42the around the perimeter of the locker room that's where
- 12:44all the players on the active roster are stationed. And
- 12:48that's Perry Nickerson, who was thirty years old and eighty
- 12:52two pounds short, area of quickness, very good, and I
- 12:56still remember him having believe it was a ninety nine
- 12:59yard interception return in training camp last year off of
- 13:03Tanner McKee. I want to say, went down the other
- 13:06way and it was you know it was he had
- 13:09that breakaway and nobody was coming close to catching him. Obviously,
- 13:13he's a veteran player. Some of the teams he's played
- 13:15for are the Jets, the Dolphins. He was drafted out
- 13:20of Tulane and I liked him actually coming out of Tulane.
- 13:24But he is somebody who is of a slighter build,
- 13:27super quick and can cover a decent amount of ground,
- 13:31then he's going to fight and be competitive. So that's
- 13:34somebody that you get the sense that, if all things
- 13:37are equal, you might tend to see someone like Vic
- 13:39Vangio show deference to a player that he might have
- 13:44more confidence in who's seen a lot more of what
- 13:46teams are going to throw at that position. If nothing else,
- 13:50I think Perry Nickerson's somebody that would be wise to
- 13:53keep around on the practice squad just so he can
- 13:55help some of the younger players and if needed, can
- 13:58be elevated and you know that he going to give
- 14:00you a competent level of play. Obviously he's a little
- 14:04bit further down in the pecking order, but it could
- 14:08be a name to keep an eye on that's a
- 14:09little bit under the radar right now. The final player
- 14:15is Tariq Castro Fields. So Castro Fields, I should say,
- 14:22not the final player, but one of the primary The
- 14:25final one who was here from last season was Tarike
- 14:27Castro Fields. He was on the practice squad. He was
- 14:29drafted by the forty nine ers. A little bit of
- 14:32a bigger corner at six foot one, one hundred and ninety
- 14:34seven pounds. He's twenty six years old. Penn State product,
- 14:39who knows. I get the sense that he, at least
- 14:41he was in college a little bit handsy, but he'll
- 14:45have another opportunity. Again. Working in his favor is that
- 14:47he has some familiarity with the coaches. I just don't
- 14:51know how many reps are realistically going to be there
- 14:53for him to really flash, But that's where the preseason's
- 14:56for is, so keep an eye on him as well.
- 15:00Then there are a couple of rookie free agents Brandon
- 15:04Johnson who went to Oregon five ten five. He's more
- 15:09of a of a nickel corner, but that's somebody that
- 15:13the Eagles signed after the draft. Opportunities are going to
- 15:16be limited when you're that far down in the pecking order.
- 15:19The realistic, the reality of the situation is that you're
- 15:22not going to see a lot of opportunities, and that's
- 15:24where you have to flash on special teams in the
- 15:26preseason and really maximize that. We also have BJ Mays
- 15:31BJ Mays Texas A and m six foott eighty seven.
- 15:37I should say that in OTA's I observed him being physical.
- 15:42He was around the football a lot. That's somebody that
- 15:45I think could draw some penalties because he's not afraid
- 15:47to mix it up and get his hands on receivers,
- 15:51but kind of in that same bucket as Brandon Johnson.
- 15:55I just think that you're gonna have to maximize those
- 15:58opportunities because they're going to be in frequent You need
- 16:01a number of players at that position to get through drills,
- 16:03and he's going to have to be consistent day in
- 16:06and day out to really earn or catch the eye
- 16:11of the coaching staff. And then rounding things out. I've
- 16:14mentioned this player before last season, and that is cornerback
- 16:18aj Woods five nine and eighty six pounds, went to Pittsburgh.
- 16:22I really liked his tape coming out of Pittsburgh. He
- 16:24played outside, but he's a nickel corner here with the Eagles,
- 16:27and really that's where he fits best no matter where
- 16:30he goes. Quick player, smart player, and I think that
- 16:34he provides some sticky coverage. But this is someone who's
- 16:38on the Eagles practice squad all year last season, and
- 16:42he lockered right behind He had the an auxiliary locker
- 16:47in the middle of the locker room, which is where
- 16:49most of the practice squad players were. But all you
- 16:52had to do was turn around and Isaiah Rodgers was
- 16:54right behind him, and Andre sam was right behind him,
- 16:57so they were always frequently having those conversations. And one
- 17:00little story that I can remember talking to A. J.
- 17:02Woods is that when the Eagles were playing the Bengals,
- 17:05he was emulating Mike Hilton, their nickel corner in practice
- 17:09and mentioned about his takeaway, his primary takeaway being how
- 17:13physical he played against the run and how he was
- 17:15able to kind of use that and translate that into
- 17:19his game. So he's further down. He's definitely behind Perry Nickerson.
- 17:23He's probably above Brandon Johnson in terms of the backup
- 17:27nickel roll, but he kind of find himself in that
- 17:32same category where he has to flash. He has to
- 17:36be consistent. He's not going to be someone who can
- 17:39afford to have a couple of days where he doesn't
- 17:42perform the standard or he has an off day. He
- 17:45needs to be, you know, honing in on the details
- 17:48and really talking and interacting with Christian Parker and Roy
- 17:53Anderson and making sure that he's doing everything that he
- 17:56kind of put him in the best position to push
- 17:59for a spot. But that's gonna do it for this
- 18:02cornerback position, and that's going to do it for this series,
- 18:06the Positional Preview series, and Inside the Birds has come
- 18:08to a conclusion. I hope everybody enjoyed it. If you
- 18:12missed any of the episodes, you can go back and
- 18:13grab it on any of the major podcast platforms that
- 18:18you get it at. And I've talked about all ninety players,
- 18:22so you have a pretty good synopsis or a good
- 18:25feel of where this team is and what to expect
- 18:28from certain position groups as training Camp Fast approaches. This
- 18:32has been Andrew de Checko on the check O'Dell and
- 18:34I'll talk to everybody on Monday,
