- 0:00Speaker 1: Hunter Withrow on sport and state. It's Clay Travis, our
- 0:04Speaker 1: fearless leader, and he's got Clay Travis Law for you.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Accidents don't wait for a good time. One bad moment,
- 0:09Speaker 1: a wreck, a fall, a doctor who wasn't paying attention,
- 0:12Speaker 1: and suddenly you're fighting an insurance company that does this
- 0:15Speaker 1: every single day. And that's why Clay started Clay Travis Law.
- 0:17Speaker 1: He's a Vanderbilt Law grad, and he built a firm
- 0:20Speaker 1: focused on the details. People who, they deserve someone willing
- 0:24Speaker 1: to be on their side, willing to pay full attention,
- 0:27Speaker 1: ask the hard questions, and push back when things don't
- 0:29Speaker 1: add up. You're backed by experienced trial attorneys who bring
- 0:32Speaker 1: the fight to corporations and insurers. Clay Travis Law, based

- 0:41Speaker 2: product liability. If you were wrong, they want to hear
- 0:44Speaker 2: about it. Here's what they promise. Honesty. They don't sugarcoat
- 0:46Speaker 2: your case. You'll hear what it's actually worth, not what
- 0:48Speaker 2: you want to hear. Case evaluation is free. No charge,

- 1:00Speaker 2: is too big or too small.
- 1:01Speaker 1: So Jalen Hurts is out for the season with blood
- 1:04Speaker 1: clots in his lungs. And he goes and plays a
- 1:08Speaker 1: game where he can't sleep. He's not allowed to sleep.
- 1:12Speaker 1: He's up till 4 a.m. And he's told to do
- 1:15Speaker 1: this because it's not beneficial for him. It's a problem
- 1:21Speaker 1: where he could actually loosen a blood clot and potentially die. Chad,
- 1:27Speaker 1: the Eagles clear the play. He plays on no sleep.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And then they fly him back, which is a pressurized cabin.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You're not supposed to do that at all. We just
- 1:38Speaker 1: mentioned Clay Travis Law, but some people may be calling Clay.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Who knows? I don't know how this happens, especially in
- 1:46Speaker 1: the NFL. And here's Nick Sirianni, who doesn't handle this
- 1:50Speaker 1: well at all with the Philadelphia Eagles as the head coach,
- 1:54Speaker 1: answering questions about it.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Were you briefed by the medical team?
- 1:59Speaker 3: Before you do this press conference on why he was
- 2:01Speaker 3: permitted to fly despite the blood clot? Yeah, guys, I
- 2:06Speaker 3: talked to them a lot.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Can you give us the information?
- 2:09Speaker 1: I talked to the guys.
- 2:10Speaker 3: As a spokesman of the team, we're just hoping you
- 2:13Speaker 3: give us some information for the public.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Guys, I've addressed this. I've talked to you guys about this. Again,
- 2:21Speaker 3: the medical experts are there. And I think I've answered
- 2:26Speaker 3: this question multiple times. We put out a statement for
- 2:29Speaker 3: you guys to hear, put out multiple statements for you
- 2:33Speaker 3: guys to hear. And so and I told you guys
- 2:37Speaker 3: that last week that I was going to leave it
- 2:38Speaker 3: at that of where, you know, where we were on that,
- 2:41Speaker 3: because we put out a detailed statement for you guys
- 2:44Speaker 3: to hear and understand.
- 2:46Speaker 4: We'll go to Brooke.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Sirianni is among the most arrogant coaches, Chad, but the
- 2:50Speaker 1: NFL is the most arrogant. Because teams now are just
- 2:53Speaker 1: putting out statements and expecting us to just regurgitate this
- 2:57Speaker 1: statement and just brush it away, under the rug. Where's
- 3:03Speaker 1: the owner of the team? Where's the general manager? Where's
- 3:06Speaker 1: the medical expert? The head coach doesn't need to be
- 3:10Speaker 1: up there discussing medical issues every single day when he's
- 3:14Speaker 1: talking to the media. Teams use the head coach way
- 3:18Speaker 1: too often to cover and just get behind and really
- 3:24Speaker 1: insulates the rest of the team, right? I don't know
- 3:27Speaker 1: why they're not more accountable in issues like this specifically,
- 3:31Speaker 1: where you have someone's life on the line, literally.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah, we needed Matt Rule in his press conference and
- 3:37Speaker 2: that talking about everybody. Hey, it takes everybody. Where's the
- 3:40Speaker 2: team doctor in here? Where's the analytics and where's the
- 3:42Speaker 2: NFL health person? Where's the person who understands travel and
- 3:46Speaker 2: what that does to the body when you have a
- 3:48Speaker 2: blood clot, all these things. So Jalen Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn,
- 3:53Speaker 2: issued a separate statement with the Eagles also. And she
- 3:58Speaker 2: clears some things up this way, which I still think
- 4:02Speaker 2: this whole situation is as clear as mud.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Yes.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive
- 4:07Speaker 2: medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency,
- 4:11Speaker 2: we are providing additional info on the diagnosis and treatment
- 4:14Speaker 2: plan related to his condition. Jalen was initially diagnosed by
- 4:17Speaker 2: specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis.
- 4:22Speaker 2: After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is now
- 4:25Speaker 2: a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli.
- 4:31Speaker 2: He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations.
- 4:35Speaker 2: His treatment should only involve anticoagulation, i.e. blood thinners, during
- 4:39Speaker 2: this time. He will not be allowed to participate in
- 4:42Speaker 2: any contact activities, including football. Jalen's prognosis is very good,
- 4:45Speaker 2: and we expect a full recovery. We anticipate that he
- 4:48Speaker 2: will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when
- 4:51Speaker 2: off blood thinners. In the meantime, he will remain active
- 4:55Speaker 2: around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we
- 4:59Speaker 2: anticipate that he will have no long-term effects. We are
- 5:02Speaker 2: thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I mean, to translate that, basically, he's on blood thinners.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He can't play a contact sport while he's on blood
- 5:10Speaker 2: thinners because of the risk of bleeding. during the sport
- 5:13Speaker 2: and what could happen there, but everything else functionally is fine.
- 5:15Speaker 2: You know, he's able to condition, he's able to be
- 5:18Speaker 2: around the team, he's able to do all those things.
- 5:21Speaker 2: Here's what I can't square in my mind with this
- 5:24Speaker 2: whole situation. You had Nick Sirianni saying, we released a
- 5:28Speaker 2: statement saying we care about the well-being of our players,
- 5:32Speaker 2: first and foremost. I don't understand how that squares with hey,
- 5:36Speaker 2: there's a risk of sleeping in this. You've been up
- 5:39Speaker 2: till 4 a.m. Let's start you in the game. After
- 5:43Speaker 2: a few hours of sleep, he was having to take
- 5:46Speaker 2: a nap in the stadium. They found a private room
- 5:48Speaker 2: for him in the stadium next to the locker room
- 5:50Speaker 2: for him to go sleep. And this is not like
- 5:52Speaker 2: Steve McNair would take a nap before every game just
- 5:55Speaker 2: because he wanted to. He had to go sleep before
- 5:58Speaker 2: the game, and they brought him out right before kickoff
- 6:00Speaker 2: to go play that game, which ended up being a
- 6:03Speaker 2: 19-17 loss to Jacksonville. I just do not believe there's
- 6:06Speaker 2: a lot of people pointing to the toughness and, boy,
- 6:08Speaker 2: look how much football matters to Jalen Hurts. I never
- 6:10Speaker 2: questioned how much football matters to Jalen Hurts. My question is,
- 6:14Speaker 2: how much does Jalen Hurts matter to the Philadelphia Eagles
- 6:17Speaker 2: and that doctor that let him go out there and play?
- 6:20Speaker 2: Because someone needed to step up and say, guys, he's
- 6:23Speaker 2: got this issue with blood clots. It could become a
- 6:27Speaker 2: bigger issue. Sleeping was a risk. He didn't sleep. You
- 6:32Speaker 2: need to go with the backups. in this situation, and
- 6:34Speaker 2: let's save him from himself and not put him in
- 6:38Speaker 2: this situation. I'm thrilled that everything worked out where he
- 6:41Speaker 2: didn't get worse with this and nothing bad happened. But
- 6:44Speaker 2: with all the stuff going on, how do you put
- 6:47Speaker 2: out a statement saying, well, we care about the welfare
- 6:49Speaker 2: of the players more than anything else? It's ridiculous.
- 6:52Speaker 1: Chad, where's the owner, the general manager, and the medical expert?
- 6:56Speaker 1: We have a head coach and an agent discussing this
- 6:58Speaker 1: with us through the team. You know, I mean, I
- 7:05Speaker 1: realize seriality doesn't look good there, but how, I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 1: it would be like us talking about this. I would
- 7:09Speaker 1: be frustrated too, because I'm being put, put out there
- 7:11Speaker 1: to the wolves and I'm the only one that's actually
- 7:14Speaker 1: answering questions as a human and not writing statements from AI.
- 7:18Speaker 1: That's that we saw the same thing with the Titans, right?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Like just statements and different things. It just does not
- 7:25Speaker 1: add up to me with the accountability in certain, certain instances.
- 7:29Speaker 1: We still, I mean, we, we, We are not far
- 7:32Speaker 1: removed from Tua Tagovailoa having that concussion issue. He's just
- 7:37Speaker 1: out there playing. He can just go about his day.
- 7:41Speaker 1: And we had players crying on air about it that
- 7:44Speaker 1: night whenever those issues were popping up and he was
- 7:48Speaker 1: on the field in that position. I can't settle that
- 7:52Speaker 1: with myself, especially with the way the league is supposed
- 7:55Speaker 1: to take health because of health concerns. We're going to
- 7:59Speaker 1: change the kickoff rules and all these different things. But
- 8:02Speaker 1: yet this happens? That doesn't register at all.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Yeah, there is nothing wrong. Remember the Tiger Woods press
- 8:10Speaker 2: conference after the car accident where they had the doctor
- 8:14Speaker 2: giving the chart of what happened and we know his
- 8:17Speaker 2: recovery and everything? We've seen medical experts give a lot
- 8:21Speaker 2: of press conferences over the years for different things, right?
- 8:25Speaker 2: I'd love to see the Philadelphia Eagles team doctor or
- 8:27Speaker 2: physician give Explain the protocol that happened. What got flagged?
- 8:33Speaker 2: What was the warning sign of this? How did it
- 8:35Speaker 2: not get flagged until you're in an evaluation in London?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Did you know about this before? What are the risks
- 8:42Speaker 2: involved with sleeping? What are the risks involved with flight
- 8:45Speaker 2: on something like this? I got a thousand questions. Did
- 8:50Speaker 2: you ever consider not playing them because of lack of sleep?
- 8:52Speaker 2: I mean, you're playing quarterback at the highest level of
- 8:56Speaker 2: professional football. You know, this is not going out in
- 8:58Speaker 2: a rec league flag football game and playing. Sleep is
- 9:02Speaker 2: very important if you're Jalen Hurts or any player in
- 9:05Speaker 2: the NFL. And if you are forced to not sleep
- 9:08Speaker 2: and then go try to play an NFL game and
- 9:10Speaker 2: process things at 1,000 miles per hour that you have
- 9:13Speaker 2: to process, that is a huge disadvantage. Also, did they
- 9:18Speaker 2: give him something to stay awake more at that time?
- 9:21Speaker 2: What does that do to the heart? There's so many
- 9:24Speaker 2: different questions that I would have for the Philadelphia Eagles doctor.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And, Hutton, you're right.
- 9:28Speaker 2: We're not going to get any of those answers from
- 9:30Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni because he does not know. Here's Nick Sirianni's
- 9:33Speaker 2: involvement with this. He talks to the doctor and they
- 9:36Speaker 2: say he's available or he's not. And then when they
- 9:38Speaker 2: say he's available, he might go to Jalen Hurts and say,
- 9:40Speaker 2: you good to go? You feel okay? Yeah, coach, I'm
- 9:42Speaker 2: ready to go. All right, Jalen's our starting quarterback.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Boom.
- 9:46Speaker 2: That's Nick Sirianni's involvement in the whole thing.
- 9:48Speaker 1: That's right.
- 9:48Speaker 2: So he should not be up there answering questions about it.
- 9:50Speaker 1: No, I mean, and he's being told to refer to
- 9:52Speaker 1: the statement. You know, like we put the statement. That's
- 9:54Speaker 1: what he's told to do. And we're not going to
- 9:55Speaker 1: hear from Jalen Hurts either because he's on IR. So
- 9:58Speaker 1: he doesn't have to do the weekly.
- 10:00Speaker 2: quarterback but this this whole dance of like I look
- 10:04Speaker 2: I I revere football players also and the toughness of
- 10:09Speaker 2: them and what it takes to play that sport and
- 10:11Speaker 2: I watch it and we all love the sport and
- 10:13Speaker 2: we think man that's awesome this guy's a warrior that's
- 10:15Speaker 2: who you want on your team We have to walk
- 10:18Speaker 2: that fine line, though, of, boy, you can tough through this.
- 10:22Speaker 2: What a warrior to get back out there versus– you
- 10:25Speaker 2: brought up a great one, Hutton with the Tuas, head
- 10:28Speaker 2: injuries over and over. There comes a point where it's like, okay,
- 10:32Speaker 2: you feel a little gross. You feel almost like you
- 10:35Speaker 2: need to take a shower when you see a story
- 10:37Speaker 2: like this and it's like we're going to talk about
- 10:41Speaker 2: how awesome this guy is, how awesome this team is
- 10:43Speaker 2: for finding a way– to play him in that game.
- 10:46Speaker 2: I don't have that reaction to the story, I think.
- 10:49Speaker 2: There should have been some adult in the room with
- 10:51Speaker 2: an MD that could say, guys, you can't do this.
- 10:56Speaker 2: You're not going to play him. It's not worth the risk.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It's going to make everybody look bad. It's going to
- 11:00Speaker 2: put him in jeopardy. You need to start the backup
- 11:03Speaker 2: quarterback in this game. And they decided not to do that,
- 11:07Speaker 2: and now we don't really get any answers because no
- 11:09Speaker 2: one who had made that decision is going to speak.
- 11:12Speaker 1: They just release statements and say, here you go, refer
- 11:15Speaker 1: to the statement. America last. The influx of international players
- 11:20Speaker 1: is squeezing out domestic college athletes, and Washington wants to
- 11:23Speaker 1: fix it. That's the deep dive that Karen Krause took
- 11:26Speaker 1: for sport and state. She's next here on Hutton & Withrow.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Crockett Coffee, it's what fuels chat each morning. It can
- 11:32Speaker 1: certainly get your morning going as well. Started by Clay Travis,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Buck Sexton, and Buck's brother Mason. Named after Davy Crockett, hunter, storyteller, patriot,
- 11:40Speaker 1: backwoods legend. Check out the logo, Davy Crockett, surfing on
- 11:42Speaker 1: the backs of crocodiles. It tells you everything about the
- 11:44Speaker 1: attitude here. 100% pure Arabica, high-altitude beans, small batch roasted
- 11:48Speaker 1: right here in America, Tennessee, the heart of the country.
- 11:51Speaker 1: It ships fresh roasted. It's not sitting on a warehouse
- 11:53Speaker 1: shelf for six months. Light, medium, dark, decaf, organic, even
- 11:57Speaker 1: a mushroom blend. Whole bean, ground, or K-cups, peak flavor,
- 12:01Speaker 1: however you make it in the morning. Chad, you get
- 12:04Speaker 1: it with the medium blend?
- 12:06Speaker 2: King Mountain. I'm more of a dark roast guy when
- 12:10Speaker 2: it comes to David Crockett coffee. You can set up
- 12:12Speaker 2: a subscription that shows up on your schedule, change it
- 12:14Speaker 2: or cancel it anytime you want, as the free market intended.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Free shipping on orders of $ 59 or more, and there's
- 12:20Speaker 2: a discount for veterans. Crockett partners with Tunnel to Towers,
- 12:23Speaker 2: building mortgage-free homes for the families of fallen service members
- 12:26Speaker 2: and for catastrophically injured vets and first responders. Good coffee,
- 12:31Speaker 2: made in America, doing some good. CrockettCoffee.com. That's Crockett, C-R-O C-K-E-T-T-Coffee.com.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And I say it every morning, a taste of America.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And Crockett Coffee, I think, cares more about vets in
- 12:46Speaker 2: America than the WNBA does based on their stance when
- 12:49Speaker 2: it comes to not even appearing for the national anthem
- 12:52Speaker 2: before their games.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Aaron Krause joins us from sportandstate.com. Karen, great to have
- 12:56Speaker 1: you back on. Hope you're doing well. Have you heard
- 12:58Speaker 1: the discussion we were having just prior to you joining us?
- 13:01Speaker 1: What do you make of all the statements released instead
- 13:04Speaker 1: of the statements made behind a podium?
- 13:06Speaker 5: It's so crazy. The WNBA brass refuses to even acknowledge
- 13:12Speaker 5: this national anthem. Brouhaha. I guess they think that if
- 13:17Speaker 5: they just don't release a statement, it will go away.
- 13:20Speaker 5: But my read on the matter is that people are
- 13:23Speaker 5: actually talking more about these two teams not staying for
- 13:27Speaker 5: the national anthem than they are anything that Angel Reese
- 13:30Speaker 5: is doing on the court or who is playing well
- 13:33Speaker 5: or not.
- 13:34Speaker 2: So.
- 13:35Speaker 5: It's just been completely mishandled from the get-go.
- 13:41Speaker 1: And no accountability from any of these leagues anymore.
- 13:43Speaker 5: No. No transparency. This is what happens when you just
- 13:51Speaker 5: have a lot of gatekeepers missing from doing real journalism
- 13:57Speaker 5: and objective journalism as opposed to being advocates. Advocacy journalism.
- 14:03Speaker 2: And Karen, we're going to get to your latest piece
- 14:05Speaker 2: for sure, but it kind of harkens back to another
- 14:07Speaker 2: piece you wrote at Sporting State about the bar in
- 14:11Speaker 2: Portland and people just unwilling to speak to each other.
- 14:17Speaker 2: And hey, you're wearing an XXXY shirt. I'm going to
- 14:19Speaker 2: kick you out of the bar because I'm uncomfortable and
- 14:22Speaker 2: someone else is, instead of seeing that, hey, maybe you
- 14:24Speaker 2: guys actually have a lot in common. And you had
- 14:26Speaker 2: the great story about the older Kansas City Chiefs fan
- 14:30Speaker 2: and the person in the bar that they got along
- 14:33Speaker 2: and they actually had some commonalities they didn't see before.
- 14:36Speaker 2: But the WNBA feels the opposite about everybody. It is, hey,
- 14:39Speaker 2: you look different than our league does and our normal
- 14:42Speaker 2: fan base does. So we're going to discredit and discount
- 14:45Speaker 2: everything that you have to say and any question you
- 14:47Speaker 2: may have about the league.
- 14:49Speaker 5: Well, it's just this misguided empathy, you know, like this righteousness.
- 14:54Speaker 5: If I show that I'm for the down and out,
- 14:59Speaker 5: I'm for biological males that want to play in women's sports.
- 15:05Speaker 5: That just shows how much empathy I have. And you
- 15:09Speaker 5: don't have it if you disagree with me. Well, how's
- 15:12Speaker 5: that working out in Europe right now? Let's look at
- 15:16Speaker 5: what's going on in France. How is that misguided empathy
- 15:19Speaker 5: working out for them? They call it student protests, but
- 15:23Speaker 5: the students are not the ones creating all of the
- 15:27Speaker 5: rioting and the violence.
- 15:30Speaker 1: Karen Krause joins us here on Hutton & Withrow. We're
- 15:32Speaker 1: presented by Hard Rock Bet. You had a deep dive
- 15:36Speaker 1: on the influx of international players squeezing out domestic college athletes.
- 15:41Speaker 1: What led you to this idea, this piece? And you
- 15:44Speaker 1: spent a lot of time on it. And what did
- 15:47Speaker 1: you find out ultimately about soccer and many other sports?
- 15:51Speaker 5: So this was a story I pitched to Dom during
- 15:54Speaker 5: my job interview. I had actually tried to place this
- 15:57Speaker 5: story in mainstream media outlets and nobody wanted to touch
- 16:02Speaker 5: it because they looked at it as, oh, this is
- 16:05Speaker 5: a sporting version of not wanting open borders. So I
- 16:11Speaker 5: was a swimmer at USC in the early 80s. I
- 16:14Speaker 5: swam with Olympians from Australia, Canada, England, Sweden, Japan. It
- 16:20Speaker 5: was a wonderful experience. But when I started looking at
- 16:23Speaker 5: the numbers, I realized that the Karen Krause today would
- 16:27Speaker 5: have no spot on that USC roster because the rosters
- 16:32Speaker 5: are smaller now for a number of reasons, a lot
- 16:37Speaker 5: having to do with the NIL and such. And also
- 16:41Speaker 5: there's just this influx of international student athletes. And I'm
- 16:45Speaker 5: not saying that's a bad thing that I would have
- 16:47Speaker 5: had to go somewhere else, but I just wanted to
- 16:49Speaker 5: try to understand what is behind this influx. And then
- 16:55Speaker 5: I thought, what better way than to use men's soccer
- 16:59Speaker 5: just months after the North America co-hosted the World Cup,
- 17:05Speaker 5: the Men's World Cup. Missouri State, a program that's three
- 17:09Speaker 5: hours from Kansas City, which hosted numerous World Cup games,
- 17:14Speaker 5: sparking the interest, no doubt, of young boys wanting to
- 17:18Speaker 5: grow up to compete in the World Cup. But the
- 17:22Speaker 5: chances of them playing at a college like Missouri State
- 17:26Speaker 5: in their home state is really slim. They have a
- 17:29Speaker 5: 27-member team, 26 of which are from outside the United States.
- 17:34Speaker 5: So that's sort of what led me down this rabbit hole.
- 17:39Speaker 2: It's also, Karen, it's Missouri State University, right?
- 17:43Speaker 5: A publicly funded university. Yes.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And I always think back to, you know, we've worked
- 17:50Speaker 2: with a lot of charities over the years and a
- 17:52Speaker 2: lot of local charities, the sales pitch to people is, hey,
- 17:55Speaker 2: it's great to give wherever you want to give, but
- 17:57Speaker 2: when you give to you know, starving kids in Africa,
- 18:01Speaker 2: know that there are kids in your community that don't
- 18:03Speaker 2: have enough to eat also. And we're going to represent
- 18:06Speaker 2: people in our area, in our community, in our state
- 18:09Speaker 2: that are suffering through poverty. So think about those here also.
- 18:14Speaker 2: What is the responsibility of an athletic department when it
- 18:17Speaker 2: comes to those, that local thinking of let's serve our state,
- 18:22Speaker 2: our community first, let's bring in athletes from this area
- 18:26Speaker 2: and let's worry about Americans before we worry about wins
- 18:31Speaker 2: and losses, because we're going to go get the next
- 18:33Speaker 2: best Colombian midfielder that decided not to go play at Duke.
- 18:37Speaker 1: Right.
- 18:38Speaker 5: So I grew up in California at a time when
- 18:41Speaker 5: the UC system, its mission statement was that it wanted
- 18:45Speaker 5: to provide a university education for the students in state
- 18:52Speaker 5: first and foremost. So that's the principles that I was
- 18:56Speaker 5: raised on. It is interesting. Michigan State and Washington, two
- 19:02Speaker 5: public universities, are both in the top 15. And Washington's
- 19:08Speaker 5: entire roster is U.S.
- 19:09Speaker 2: Born.
- 19:10Speaker 5: And of that roster, I think at least 20, maybe 21,
- 19:16Speaker 5: are from the state of Washington. They're in-state. Same with
- 19:19Speaker 5: Michigan State. A huge portion of their roster is from
- 19:24Speaker 5: michigan so there are universities who understand that mission and
- 19:30Speaker 5: are upholding it but i think there's other factors here
- 19:34Speaker 5: that you've got a cottage industry that has grown around
- 19:39Speaker 5: the money that is to be made in college sports
- 19:43Speaker 5: so you have these european athletes not just in soccer
- 19:47Speaker 5: my goodness in tennis it's 64 percent of the participants
- 19:53Speaker 5: in division one are from outside the united states they're
- 19:58Speaker 5: in essence people who have played professionally kind of um
- 20:03Speaker 5: struggled and because they didn't make enough money they're able
- 20:07Speaker 5: through some loopholes to come to U.S. and go to college.
- 20:12Speaker 5: And not only do they have more experience, they are also,
- 20:17Speaker 5: they tend to be older. Think about an 18-year-old going
- 20:21Speaker 5: up against a 22 or 23-year-old. It's a huge difference.
- 20:25Speaker 5: And that's what Patrick McEnroe was speaking to when he
- 20:30Speaker 5: appeared before the House of Representatives subcommittee in Washington, D.C.,
- 20:36Speaker 5: But it is the $ 64, 000 question. What is the role
- 20:42Speaker 5: of college athletics, especially in publicly funded universities? Is it
- 20:47Speaker 5: to entertain the local populace with the most competitive teams,
- 20:52Speaker 5: no matter where the student athletes come from? Or is
- 20:55Speaker 5: it to take care of local and in-state student athletes first?
- 21:01Speaker 2: Karen, I ask this because you were someone who competed
- 21:04Speaker 2: in what some would call it non-revenue sport in college, right?
- 21:09Speaker 2: Which is a big part of college athletics. Most of
- 21:12Speaker 2: the sports that don't make a lot of money. Big
- 21:16Speaker 2: picture question here. As we move towards more of a
- 21:19Speaker 2: world where everything is based on the money makers at
- 21:23Speaker 2: a school, how much money are you paying the football team,
- 21:25Speaker 2: the basketball team, and how much money are those sports making?
- 21:28Speaker 2: We've heard many ADs say, we're going to have to
- 21:30Speaker 2: start cutting other sports that don't make us money. I
- 21:33Speaker 2: hear what you just said and what you've written about
- 21:36Speaker 2: that 64% of tennis players on scholarship in Division I
- 21:40Speaker 2: are from another country. And I think to myself, how
- 21:44Speaker 2: long before every single school in America says, we're cutting tennis?
- 21:48Speaker 2: Because all this does right now is it's a way
- 21:50Speaker 2: to get foreign-born athletes a full ride or a scholarship
- 21:54Speaker 2: to our school, and that doesn't make any monetary sense
- 21:57Speaker 2: for us. So tennis is no more in American college
- 22:00Speaker 2: sports for every program that's out there. It feels like
- 22:04Speaker 2: we're headed downhill towards decisions like that being made, especially
- 22:08Speaker 2: when I hear that statistic.
- 22:10Speaker 5: It's really interesting that you say that because at the
- 22:12Speaker 5: Paris Olympic, there were 1,200 athletes who had some kind
- 22:17Speaker 5: of NCAA experience, past, present, you know, ties. Of those, 800,
- 22:24Speaker 5: a little over 800, I believe, were representing countries outside
- 22:31Speaker 5: other than the United States. So this has very practical
- 22:35Speaker 5: repercussions for our Olympic movement. And when you look at
- 22:41Speaker 5: the House versus NCAA settlement, one of the ramifications of
- 22:47Speaker 5: that is you can now, there's no limit on the
- 22:52Speaker 5: number of scholarships you can offer in these non-revenue sports.
- 22:55Speaker 5: Soccer used to be capped at 9.9 now they can
- 22:59Speaker 5: offer 28 or 20 28 if they want but they're
- 23:03Speaker 5: now capping the number of athletes that can be on
- 23:06Speaker 5: a team and i really think it's already happened i
- 23:10Speaker 5: have friends who coach in the uc system and they
- 23:13Speaker 5: used to have teams of 25 to 30 now they're
- 23:17Speaker 5: down to 20 and i really do believe chad that
- 23:20Speaker 5: it's a matter of time before some of these universities
- 23:23Speaker 5: say you know This just isn't cost effective for us.
- 23:27Speaker 5: And a lot of these Olympic caliber sports or Olympic
- 23:30Speaker 5: sports are going to be dropped. I really think that's
- 23:34Speaker 5: going to be the next shoe that falls. And when
- 23:37Speaker 5: we bemoan the absence of them, it's going to be
- 23:40Speaker 5: too late. And it's really going to have ramifications for
- 23:45Speaker 5: how our country fares at the Olympics. Now, whether that
- 23:49Speaker 5: matters or not is a separate conversation. But I do
- 23:53Speaker 5: believe we are headed down that path.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Karen Krause joins us from sportandstate.com. What are the financial
- 23:58Speaker 1: incentives here to get these players, these athletes to college
- 24:02Speaker 1: in the United States? What kickbacks are happening? I'm assuming
- 24:05Speaker 1: there has to be a matchmaker.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Yes. How do they find these guys?
- 24:09Speaker 5: These recruiting agencies, that's what I meant. Thank you for
- 24:13Speaker 5: getting me redirected. I got off point that there are
- 24:16Speaker 5: recruiting agencies that have sprung up to essentially play matchmaker
- 24:21Speaker 5: between these European athletes and US universities. And in the
- 24:26Speaker 5: course of my reporting, I was told absolutely there's nefarious
- 24:31Speaker 5: activities going on where there are coaches who will take
- 24:36Speaker 5: players from certain recruiting agencies, which allows the recruiting agencies
- 24:41Speaker 5: to say, look, we have a 100% placement rate and
- 24:45Speaker 5: they are getting kickbacks as a result. But it's interesting
- 24:49Speaker 5: because I spoke to a student at Missouri State who
- 24:55Speaker 5: had played, he was from Ireland, played in, he had
- 25:01Speaker 5: signed a youth contract for one of the team, pro
- 25:05Speaker 5: teams in England, and they did not renew his contract. Now, he,
- 25:11Speaker 5: was he technically a pro in the United States? We
- 25:14Speaker 5: would say yes. The NCAA says, well, he wasn't making
- 25:18Speaker 5: enough money to qualify as a pro. He was basically
- 25:20Speaker 5: getting his expenses paid. It'd be like being at a
- 25:23Speaker 5: boarding school here, I suppose. And he said, I didn't
- 25:27Speaker 5: even know anything about U.S.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Colleges.
- 25:30Speaker 5: I had never heard of Missouri. I had never heard
- 25:32Speaker 5: of Missouri State. I had never heard of the coach,
- 25:36Speaker 5: Michael Siebel. But then a recruiting agency reached out to him,
- 25:40Speaker 5: and that's how he wound up in Missouri. Now, will
- 25:44Speaker 5: he add value to the local area?
- 25:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:48Speaker 5: He's coaching at one of the youth teams there. So he's,
- 25:54Speaker 5: he's pursuing a graduate degree, wants to become an athletic trainer.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Maybe he'll stay in the United States and apply his trade,
- 26:01Speaker 5: but these are, you know, we need to be at
- 26:04Speaker 5: least starting this conversation. Is this what we really want
- 26:07Speaker 5: from collegiate athletics? Is this the role of collegiate athletics specifically? And,
- 26:14Speaker 5: of universities in general.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I have a feeling, Karen, that you're not done with
- 26:19Speaker 1: this yet.
- 26:21Speaker 5: I hope this will lead to more stories. There are
- 26:24Speaker 5: plenty more to be told. You know, Chad, like you said,
- 26:28Speaker 5: the ASU women's tennis team is entirely foreign born. And
- 26:35Speaker 5: it's not like Arizona is a wasteland in tennis. The
- 26:39Speaker 5: weather is, allows people to play tennis 12 months a year. Well,
- 26:43Speaker 5: if you can play early in the morning in the
- 26:45Speaker 5: summer months, but it's fertile territory for tennis. And yet,
- 26:50Speaker 5: if you're a young kid growing up in Arizona, your
- 26:53Speaker 5: chances of playing tennis, if you're a woman anyway, at
- 26:59Speaker 5: your local school right now look very, you know, very bleak.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Well, it's a great piece and it can relate to
- 27:07Speaker 2: so many different stories in sports. Karen, we had on
- 27:10Speaker 2: a coach here locally, Engel Martin, who coaches football at CPA,
- 27:14Speaker 2: and there are a number of private schools in the
- 27:16Speaker 2: state of Tennessee who have left the state classification because
- 27:20Speaker 2: there are a few schools who are boarding athletes from
- 27:23Speaker 2: all over the place, and they're dominating the sport. Baylor
- 27:27Speaker 2: and Chattanooga is the classic example. They got a guy,
- 27:30Speaker 2: David Gabriel Georges. He's from Quebec, and he is a
- 27:34Speaker 2: French-speaking Canadian player who's dominating the high school football, and
- 27:37Speaker 2: is going to go to the University of Tennessee and
- 27:39Speaker 2: be their starting running back probably a year from now.
- 27:43Speaker 2: But there's this big debate about what are high school
- 27:45Speaker 2: athletics even for, not just college athletics. Clay Travis and
- 27:50Speaker 2: I have had this discussion. What do you feel like
- 27:52Speaker 2: if you are paying full tuition to go to Baylor
- 27:57Speaker 2: and your son never gets a chance to see the
- 27:59Speaker 2: field because the entire starting 22 are from somewhere else,
- 28:03Speaker 2: either somewhere else in America or somewhere else? And they're
- 28:06Speaker 2: all being boarded for free at the school. You get
- 28:08Speaker 2: a chance to win state titles, but you don't really
- 28:10Speaker 2: get a chance to see the field. And it just
- 28:12Speaker 2: goes back to the fundamental question of what are we doing?
- 28:15Speaker 2: What's the purpose of it? And I feel like if
- 28:17Speaker 2: you say, you know what we need? We need less
- 28:19Speaker 2: foreign-born players in all of college sports. We're immediately going
- 28:23Speaker 2: to be deemed as hateful or not accepting of other
- 28:26Speaker 2: cultures or whatever. And my response to that is, is
- 28:30Speaker 2: it hateful to local kids to include them and not them?
- 28:34Speaker 2: I mean, where is the balance in all of this?
- 28:37Speaker 5: Well, that's what I asked the Missouri State coach, Michael Siebel, who,
- 28:41Speaker 5: to be fair– is very involved and has been throughout
- 28:46Speaker 5: his adult life in the growth of US soccer. He's
- 28:49Speaker 5: been a part of developmental teams. He's very involved with
- 28:53Speaker 5: the Springfield youth soccer team. So he's not a bad
- 29:00Speaker 5: guy in this, but he has a pragmatism that says,
- 29:05Speaker 5: I'm going to go after the best available athlete. And
- 29:08Speaker 5: in his eyes, the best available athlete that he's able
- 29:11Speaker 5: to draw to Springfield, Missouri, tends to not be from
- 29:15Speaker 5: Springfield or Missouri or from the United States. And I
- 29:20Speaker 5: do think it's going to have a trickle down effect.
- 29:23Speaker 5: I've talked to coaches who have said, parents have said
- 29:26Speaker 5: to them during the recruiting process, my child must get
- 29:30Speaker 5: some scholarship money to justify the costs that we have
- 29:34Speaker 5: spent in developing them to this point. So what is
- 29:39Speaker 5: it going, what's trickle-down effect going to be in youth
- 29:42Speaker 5: sports when parents realize that their 7, 8, 9, 10-year-old
- 29:47Speaker 5: really has very little chance of getting not just a
- 29:51Speaker 5: scholarship to play sports in college, but even a roster
- 29:55Speaker 5: spot to play sports in college? does that child still
- 29:59Speaker 5: continue on the sports path? And as a former walk-on,
- 30:03Speaker 5: I'm going to shout this from the mountaintops. There's so
- 30:06Speaker 5: much good that comes out of sports participation that has
- 30:11Speaker 5: nothing to do with the extrinsic results. I learned so
- 30:16Speaker 5: much that has been helpful to me in my life path.
- 30:20Speaker 5: And I've made friends for a lifetime during my childhood
- 30:25Speaker 5: participation in sports. So It wasn't all about scholarship money
- 30:30Speaker 5: and the like for me, but I fear that that
- 30:35Speaker 5: participant is going to be lost as this landscape broads
- 30:41Speaker 5: to include, as you said, not just college, but high school,
- 30:45Speaker 5: and then who knows where it goes from there.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Karen Krause has been our guest. You can read the
- 30:50Speaker 1: deep dive on this at sportandstate.com. Karen, thank you for
- 30:55Speaker 1: the time. Great, great job with this. And we're, we're
- 30:58Speaker 1: glad that Dom hired you off of this.
- 31:00Speaker 5: Thank you. I appreciate it greatly. You know, I'm just
- 31:03Speaker 5: a right wing blogger according to some media outlets, but I'm,
- 31:08Speaker 5: I wear that with honor.
- 31:10Speaker 1: Yes.
- 31:11Speaker 2: If you attended a WNBA press conference, you'd definitely be
- 31:13Speaker 2: referred to as a right wing blogger and would not
- 31:16Speaker 2: be granted a question. It could be much worse.
- 31:18Speaker 1: You're right.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Yes.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Thank you, Karen. We appreciate it.
- 31:21Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Yep. Go read, uh, more of this at sport in
- 31:25Speaker 1: the state.com. Check it each day. Uh, bookmark it. Why
- 31:27Speaker 1: don't you, uh, good decision by Dom.
- 31:29Speaker 2: You're right. Good decision by Dom to hire Karen. That's a,
- 31:32Speaker 2: that's a thought provoking piece. And to see that division
- 31:35Speaker 2: three in college is basically the only place that American
- 31:38Speaker 2: born soccer players or tennis stars can go play where
- 31:41Speaker 2: you have to pay your own way. By the way,
- 31:42Speaker 2: there's not athletic scholarships. It's crazy to see.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:45Speaker 1: It's the Camelot for tennis is division three. Chad, uh,
- 31:49Speaker 1: also a good decision. I mentioned this last week. Um,
- 31:53Speaker 1: the idea of the Titans pursuing ownership stake for someone
- 31:58Speaker 1: like Nick Saban or Peyton Manning. Turns out one of
- 32:01Speaker 1: their division rivals may be doing that. That's next here
- 32:04Speaker 1: on Hunting With Row presented by Hard Rock Bet. Hunting
- 32:06Speaker 1: With Row with you. We're presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 32:08Speaker 1: We're going to tell you about XXXY Athletics founded by
- 32:10Speaker 1: Jennifer Say, former national champion gymnast, former Levi's brand president.
- 32:14Speaker 1: She walked away from a corporate job rather than to
- 32:16Speaker 1: say something that she didn't believe. And she started XXXY
- 32:19Speaker 1: Athletics instead. The mission in their words, empower female athletes,
- 32:23Speaker 1: Take a stand for fair competition. They call it the
- 32:25Speaker 1: tee that launched a movement. It's real athletic apparel. It's
- 32:29Speaker 1: not just a slogan on a shirt.
- 32:30Speaker 2: That's right, Hutton. And it's also where you can get
- 32:34Speaker 2: the official real gear of the Nashville Balls. Tees, trucker hats,
- 32:38Speaker 2: only available with XXXY. New customers get 20% off your
- 32:43Speaker 2: first order when you sign up and free shipping over $ 100. XXXYathletics.com.
- 32:46Speaker 2: That's XX-XYathletics.com. Hutton, real quick, I just saw this stat
- 32:53Speaker 2: from our guy Bill Martin at Tennessee. How physical was
- 32:57Speaker 2: Tennessee against Alabama on Saturday? Deshaun Bishop, this is per
- 33:02Speaker 2: At Always College Football, 127 of Bishop's 159 yards came
- 33:08Speaker 2: between the tackles. That is the most any player has
- 33:12Speaker 2: run between the tackles against Bama in 10 years in
- 33:15Speaker 2: a football game. Not even trying to test the edge.
- 33:18Speaker 2: We're going right up the middle time and time again.
- 33:21Speaker 2: I bet it was Georgia that did it. Probably. I'd
- 33:24Speaker 2: like to know the player. Or Clemson. And we're not
- 33:27Speaker 2: talking about a collection of players. We're talking about one
- 33:28Speaker 2: player doing that, not a stable or running back. So
- 33:32Speaker 2: I would love to know the running back that did
- 33:33Speaker 2: that 10 years ago.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I'm with you. I would say it's from Georgia or
- 33:36Speaker 1: Clemson in those games. Chad, I mentioned last week about
- 33:41Speaker 1: the Titans and how they get things back on track
- 33:43Speaker 1: from a football perspective.
- 33:45Speaker 4: And....
- 33:47Speaker 1: Erse Gordon, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, fires Chris
- 33:50Speaker 1: Ballard yesterday after the Titans get their first win over Indianapolis.
- 33:54Speaker 1: They're going to restructure and they're going to rebuild. They've
- 33:58Speaker 1: got a lot of money all in on certain players
- 34:01Speaker 1: that they have to get things right. Here's Dan Patrick
- 34:05Speaker 1: on who the Colts are going to pick up the
- 34:06Speaker 1: phone and call.
- 34:08Speaker 4: If you're just joining us, the Colts have fired their
- 34:10Speaker 4: general manager, Chris Ballard, and that means Shane Steichen won't
- 34:14Speaker 4: last long either. Here you go. I just got this information.
- 34:21Speaker 4: The Colts first call will be. And then says has been.
- 34:29Speaker 4: So the Colts first call will be has been to
- 34:33Speaker 4: Peyton Manning. The call will not only get names and suggestions,
- 34:38Speaker 4: but the call will explore whether or not Peyton would
- 34:42Speaker 4: be interested in being a general manager for the Colts
- 34:46Speaker 4: as the entry point that would include ownership interest in
- 34:51Speaker 4: the Colts. This would be the first major hire by
- 34:56Speaker 4: Jim Ursae sisters, the next generation. So now you have
- 35:01Speaker 4: an opportunity to put Peyton back in Indy. as a
- 35:05Speaker 4: GM and part owner, and he gets to pick his quarterback.
- 35:10Speaker 4: So now, all of a sudden, the community is going
- 35:13Speaker 4: to love this. The league would love this. Would Peyton
- 35:17Speaker 4: love this? So that's the information I just got. I
- 35:20Speaker 4: don't know if an offer or I'm sure that the
- 35:24Speaker 4: Ursae sisters reached out to Peyton. I would expect that
- 35:28Speaker 4: to happen. Doing your due diligence, why wouldn't you? I
- 35:32Speaker 4: brought this up to the late Jim Irsay a couple
- 35:35Speaker 4: of years ago. I said, hey, would you ever think
- 35:37Speaker 4: about Peyton as a part owner? And he wasn't interested
- 35:41Speaker 4: in selling anything, even to Peyton.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Now it's different.
- 35:45Speaker 4: You guys have run through quite a few quarterbacks, and
- 35:50Speaker 4: you're not even sure now if Daniel Jones is your future,
- 35:52Speaker 4: which he probably isn't. Now what do you do with
- 35:55Speaker 4: your running back, Jonathan Taylor? What do you do with
- 35:57Speaker 4: Quentin Nelson, a future Hall of Famer? Do you do
- 36:01Speaker 4: something now? Do you start over now? And what role
- 36:06Speaker 4: will Peyton Manning play in this? Now, I'm just kind
- 36:10Speaker 4: of throwing it out there. You know, we do this
- 36:12Speaker 4: show live, and I'm thinking out loud. But, you know,
- 36:17Speaker 4: this is a source who just sent this to me
- 36:19Speaker 4: about Peyton Manning, that the first call should be if
- 36:23Speaker 4: it hasn't already happened to Peyton Manning. And would he
- 36:26Speaker 4: want to be the GM and then have part ownership there?
- 36:31Speaker 1: Chad, this is the right call. This is the structure
- 36:36Speaker 1: of a team that knows how to get things back
- 36:40Speaker 1: on track from a football perspective, a football organization. It's
- 36:44Speaker 1: exactly the path that we saw in Las Vegas with
- 36:46Speaker 1: the Raiders and Tom Brady.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I love it. And like you, Hutton, where you
- 36:53Speaker 2: laid this plan out for the Titans, I wish that
- 36:55Speaker 2: we were talking about Dan Patrick getting tipped off from
- 36:59Speaker 2: a source about the Titans doing this. Or something like
- 37:02Speaker 2: it with a Peyton Manning type. I think it's brilliant.
- 37:07Speaker 2: I think it's brilliant for the Colts. We'd like to
- 37:09Speaker 2: make fun of her on the sideline with the headset
- 37:12Speaker 2: and everything else. But I think this would be awesome
- 37:15Speaker 2: for the Colts. And key point in what DP was
- 37:19Speaker 2: saying at the start of that was Shane Steichen is next.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 37:23Speaker 2: He just laid it out. We got one out. Now
- 37:26Speaker 2: the next one, they're going to let him play out
- 37:27Speaker 2: the season probably. Then he'll be fired. Then there'll be
- 37:29Speaker 2: a complete restructuring of everything, maybe led by Peyton Manning.
- 37:33Speaker 2: I don't know that Peyton Manning wants to do this.
- 37:35Speaker 2: I thought he'd get into it a lot quicker post-playing
- 37:37Speaker 2: career than he has so far. He really likes doing
- 37:41Speaker 2: his media stuff, I know also. But would this be
- 37:45Speaker 2: a good thing for the Colts? We don't know how
- 37:48Speaker 2: Peyton would be at running an organization because he's never
- 37:50Speaker 2: done it. But I got a pretty good idea that
- 37:52Speaker 2: he's going to know football. And he's going to understand players.
- 37:55Speaker 2: And he's going to understand what a fully functioning, well-run
- 38:00Speaker 2: organization looks like. And he's going to be able to
- 38:02Speaker 2: lead one of those. I feel confident in that.
- 38:05Speaker 1: And, again, this is part ownership, right? Tom Brady likes
- 38:09Speaker 1: his media stuff, and he's still doing that with Las Vegas.
- 38:12Speaker 1: There are ways to go about this and be the
- 38:14Speaker 1: football perspective of the organization. Chris Ballard, by the way,
- 38:18Speaker 1: real quick, he left them with– he went all in,
- 38:21Speaker 1: all chips on the table– The Jets have Indianapolis' 2027
- 38:25Speaker 1: first-round pick, so they don't have a first-round pick next year.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Daniel Jones extended this offseason. Alec Pierce, who's hurt, overpaid
- 38:34Speaker 1: $ 114 million for Alec Pierce. They're not going to get
- 38:37Speaker 1: the return on Sauce Gardner that they traded away. Quentin
- 38:40Speaker 1: Nelson's contract expires this year. I mean, they're going to
- 38:45Speaker 1: have a fire cell. And there's an out that they
- 38:48Speaker 1: can have on Daniel Jones. They're going to cut him.
- 38:50Speaker 1: They're going to release him. because no one's going to
- 38:51Speaker 1: pick up his contract. But they're cleaning house, and that's
- 38:54Speaker 1: what you have to do. Not just hire a GM,
- 38:57Speaker 1: keep the coach, then fire the coach, and then pair
- 39:00Speaker 1: him with that GM who you're going to fire. Just merry-go-round.
- 39:03Speaker 1: Clean house and bring in everyone at the same time.
- 39:06Speaker 1: That's the way I think you structure an organization in
- 39:08Speaker 1: a rebuild. Buckle up Colts fans, because it's going to
- 39:12Speaker 1: be a little while. You don't have a first-round pick
- 39:14Speaker 1: to go get a quarterback next year.
- 39:17Speaker 2: It is a serious move. And it also seriously acknowledges
- 39:22Speaker 2: your own issues. And that is what Titans fans want
- 39:26Speaker 2: the Titans to do. And that doesn't mean going on alone.
- 39:30Speaker 2: local TV station and answering softball questions and not taking
- 39:34Speaker 2: personal accountability. This is a move done by ownership that
- 39:39Speaker 2: is going to, for good or ill, and I think
- 39:41Speaker 2: when you look at the Colts right now losing the
- 39:43Speaker 2: Titans on Sunday, can't get much worse than what we're
- 39:46Speaker 2: seeing right now. But for good or ill, this is
- 39:48Speaker 2: an attempt at a reset to do something different and
- 39:51Speaker 2: acknowledge that you're not good enough right now. So I
- 39:54Speaker 2: applaud Carly Ursae Gordon and her sister and whoever else
- 39:59Speaker 2: involved with this decision, if true, with what Dan Patrick
- 40:02Speaker 2: was reporting. I love it. Yep.
- 40:04Speaker 1: You at least have to make him an offer, you know.
- 40:07Speaker 1: We also love the SEC schedule week to week. We're
- 40:10Speaker 1: going to take a peek at the SEC lines, courtesy
- 40:13Speaker 1: of Hard Rock Bet. We'll see– Who's favored, who's not,
- 40:18Speaker 1: and why? And our early picks going into the weekend.
- 40:20Speaker 1: That's next here on Hutton & Withrow. This year, the
- 40:23Speaker 1: party's getting even bigger.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Hey, there's Jay Boyd. They know me.
- 40:26Speaker 4: This party, everybody's somebody.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And Hard Rock Bet has something for everyone. Plus, new
- 40:32Speaker 1: customers bet $ 5.

- 40:39Speaker 1: Great promo being offered right now. Hard Rock Bet, you

- 40:50Speaker 1: Download now. $ 5 up to $ 500 for you. Time for
- 40:54Speaker 1: our SEC power lineup. Chad, let's take a look at
- 40:57Speaker 1: the SEC lines that came out early this week. And
- 41:00Speaker 1: you can roll with us as we go through these games.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Early game this week, LSU and Auburn. The line LSU,
- 41:08Speaker 1: 7.5 on the road, over under 50.5. I don't see
- 41:11Speaker 1: much respect here, quite frankly. I feel like this is
- 41:14Speaker 1: the same setup as we saw in the Bluegrass State
- 41:17Speaker 1: against Kentucky for LSU.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Yeah, and LSU could get their third loss in this
- 41:21Speaker 2: game also. That does feel like a bit of a
- 41:23Speaker 2: big line with Auburn and what they just did against Georgia.
- 41:26Speaker 2: And you also said that Auburn, a little bit like
- 41:28Speaker 2: a northern person would, where you put the emphasis on
- 41:30Speaker 2: the burn. Auburn.
- 41:32Speaker 1: Auburn.
- 41:32Speaker 2: And then instead of Auburn, for people down south, it's
- 41:35Speaker 2: all Auburn.
- 41:37Speaker 1: Auburn.
- 41:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I would like Auburn in that one. I think Oklahoma,
- 41:42Speaker 2: favorite at Mississippi State, has everything to do with Kamario
- 41:45Speaker 2: Taylor and his health because I just don't see it.
- 41:49Speaker 2: If he's playing, I think that Mississippi State could be
- 41:51Speaker 2: a double-digit favorite in that game if he's for sure playing.
- 41:54Speaker 2: So that's all that is. And then how about South Carolina,
- 41:57Speaker 2: a favorite over Tennessee after the complete flip-flop of Tennessee
- 42:01Speaker 2: opening as a two-and-a-half point favorite?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I just don't get it after what we saw.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Tennessee comes out of the game relatively healthy, correct?
- 42:10Speaker 2: Yeah. To my knowledge, yeah, they don't have any issues.
- 42:15Speaker 1: At what point are we going to see– at what
- 42:17Speaker 1: point do we see both quarterbacks, Chad? I thought we
- 42:20Speaker 1: might see them against Alabama.
- 42:24Speaker 2: I'm less confident that we're going to see Faison Brandon
- 42:26Speaker 2: with the way George McIntyre played on Saturday. I don't
- 42:29Speaker 2: know they're going to mix and match right now because
- 42:32Speaker 2: George McIntyre, I mean, he's not been perfect and he's
- 42:35Speaker 2: not necessarily been explosive, but he's made some big plays
- 42:39Speaker 2: on his own. with keeping his eyes down the field
- 42:42Speaker 2: and finding someone open. And he has been very under control.
- 42:46Speaker 2: His clock management has been expert in that one drive
- 42:50Speaker 2: and everything else. He has got everything, play clock, everything
- 42:54Speaker 2: seems to be under control for him. So I don't
- 42:56Speaker 2: think we're going to see Faison Brandon anytime soon.
- 42:59Speaker 1: He is calculated. I saw him warm up. So I
- 43:01Speaker 1: was like, man, this vibe seems off. You know, just,
- 43:02Speaker 1: it looked like he was just kind of lackadaisical. That's
- 43:06Speaker 1: the wrong word. Just, just not lazy. Just, How about off?
- 43:11Speaker 1: He's not even warming up. He's just kind of standing
- 43:12Speaker 1: there just staring around.
- 43:13Speaker 2: He's cool, calm, and collected. Yeah, he was. He's going
- 43:16Speaker 2: to have to play pretty bad, I think, for Tennessee
- 43:19Speaker 2: to make the move to Faison Brandon.
- 43:20Speaker 1: I guess I didn't mean like bench him. I meant
- 43:22Speaker 1: more like just a package or two. Yeah.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And you could see that. I would also say keep
- 43:27Speaker 2: getting Mike Matthews the ball in those packages.
- 43:29Speaker 1: No doubt, man.
- 43:30Speaker 2: I'd rather him run it than Faison Brandon. You know,
- 43:32Speaker 2: if you're going to have somebody just to pick out
- 43:34Speaker 2: to run the football, he's looked really good. So I
- 43:37Speaker 2: would definitely do some more of that.
- 43:39Speaker 1: Are we about to see double the spread, Alabama against
- 43:41Speaker 1: Texas A & M? A little boat race action here
- 43:43Speaker 1: coming off of what happened in Knoxville. I got two.
- 43:46Speaker 1: Being pushed around.
- 43:47Speaker 2: I got two double the spread options. Also, I don't
- 43:50Speaker 2: think Texas should be favored over Ole Miss. I'll go
- 43:52Speaker 2: ahead and say that right now. I'd flip-flop that. I'd
- 43:54Speaker 2: go Ole Miss minus three and a half right now.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I think Alabama's double the spread. And sorry, Vandy fans,
- 44:00Speaker 2: Kentucky's double the spread.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Yes.
- 44:02Speaker 2: They're going to blow out Vandy in Lexington. That's my pick.
- 44:06Speaker 2: That Vandy thing is close to unraveling. here in the
- 44:09Speaker 2: back half of the season. So those are two I'd
- 44:11Speaker 2: go big with Kentucky at home. I'd go Ole Miss
- 44:15Speaker 2: money line at Texas also right now from what we've seen.
- 44:18Speaker 1: And the over-under at 52-and-a-half, I think if we're going
- 44:22Speaker 1: money line to Ole Miss, that's also going to over
- 44:26Speaker 1: in that game.
- 44:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Hey, Hutton, we put the poll question out there.
- 44:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Either or, 10-2 UCLA or Iowa or any 9-3 SEC team,
- 44:35Speaker 2: who are you taking for the college football playoff? I
- 44:37Speaker 2: argue any SEC team that finishes 9-3, based off those schedules,
- 44:41Speaker 2: should get in over 10-2 Iowa or UCLA.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Should.
- 44:44Speaker 2: Based off their strength of schedule. We have Stacey Cameron,
- 44:48Speaker 2: who tweeted me about this and said, 10-2 Indiana is
- 44:52Speaker 2: greater than 11-1 Tennessee. Okay. I'm trying to follow this
- 44:56Speaker 2: logic here, okay? Right now, Indiana's biggest win of the year,
- 45:00Speaker 2: by far, is at Nebraska. Okay?
- 45:04Speaker 1: Okay.
- 45:05Speaker 2: I think Tennessee beating Alabama is bigger than Indiana winning
- 45:08Speaker 2: at Nebraska. They lost at home to Ohio State. Tennessee
- 45:12Speaker 2: lost at home to Texas. But if Indiana– this is
- 45:17Speaker 2: not even them winning out. They've got at Michigan, Minnesota
- 45:20Speaker 2: at home, USC at home, at Washington or Purdue. They
- 45:24Speaker 2: would have to lose one of those games for this
- 45:26Speaker 2: scenario to come out, which I don't know which one
- 45:29Speaker 2: is a good loss right now for them. None of
- 45:31Speaker 2: those games. And then still– Your biggest win could be,
- 45:35Speaker 2: let's say they lose at Michigan but beat USC. Your
- 45:38Speaker 2: biggest win is at home over USC, and you're telling
- 45:41Speaker 2: me that that's better than a Tennessee team that if
- 45:44Speaker 2: they go 11-1 would then go on the road and
- 45:46Speaker 2: beat South Carolina, beat a top 10 Kentucky team at home,
- 45:51Speaker 2: add a top 15, top 25 win over LSU at home,
- 45:54Speaker 2: win on the road at Texas A & M, and
- 45:56Speaker 2: beat Alabama. And finish 11-1. I mean, he may be
- 46:01Speaker 2: trolling here, but this is a guy who does not
- 46:04Speaker 2: want to hear about the Big Ten not being on
- 46:06Speaker 2: par with the SEC. And I hate to break it
- 46:08Speaker 2: to him, they're not this year. The SEC is far better.
- 46:11Speaker 1: I would say both are getting in. Yeah, I think
- 46:15Speaker 1: Indiana would likely get in. Indiana's the wrong team to use.
- 46:18Speaker 2: But to say that you're going to slot them higher
- 46:20Speaker 2: than an 11-1 Tennessee team is insane.
- 46:23Speaker 1: Well, they probably would in the committee. based on just
- 46:27Speaker 1: last year. Yeah.
- 46:30Speaker 2: Look, I'm not saying that Indiana wouldn't beat Tennessee head-to-head, right?
- 46:33Speaker 2: But I get into this all the time. To me,
- 46:36Speaker 2: it's not about a projection of what you think is
- 46:38Speaker 2: going to happen.
- 46:39Speaker 1: It's about what have you done?
- 46:41Speaker 2: Who did you beat? Did you play close in your losses?
- 46:44Speaker 2: Do you have any bad losses? You've got to look
- 46:46Speaker 2: at the whole thing.
- 46:47Speaker 1: And as long as that is the standard for the
- 46:49Speaker 1: nine-game conference schedule, the coaches, I mean, they're not going
- 46:54Speaker 1: to like it, but I would say deal with it.
- 46:57Speaker 1: And if it's not strength of schedule, then they're screwed.
- 46:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 47:00Speaker 2: But, I mean, if I had to pick somebody right
- 47:01Speaker 2: now in a playoff game who wins, Kurt Cignetti in
- 47:05Speaker 2: Indiana or Josh Heibel in Tennessee, I'd probably take Kurt Cignetti.
- 47:10Speaker 2: But it doesn't change the fact that if Tennessee was
- 47:12Speaker 2: 11-1 and Cignetti and Indiana were 10-2, that game should
- 47:15Speaker 2: be played in Knoxville if we're ranking the teams based
- 47:19Speaker 2: on what happened in the season. Chad, I'm headed to
- 47:22Speaker 2: see Dave Chappelle tonight.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Are you really?
- 47:24Speaker 2: Where's he at?
- 47:25Speaker 1: I believe he's at the arena.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Oh, nice. Does he make people turn in their cell phones?
- 47:30Speaker 2: I'm going to find out. He's at the Ryman.
- 47:33Speaker 1: He did. He would stop his show and point out
- 47:36Speaker 1: people and the security would come and grab them and
- 47:38Speaker 1: kick them out. He's not going to be able to
- 47:40Speaker 1: do that tonight. But, you know, whenever he's making the
- 47:43Speaker 1: circuit and the tour at the smaller venues, he's setting
- 47:46Speaker 1: up whatever he's doing tonight. I don't know if this
- 47:49Speaker 1: is eventually going to, not here, but I don't know
- 47:51Speaker 1: what his tour is eventually going to be put out
- 47:53Speaker 1: on Netflix or wherever he is for this. But I
- 47:56Speaker 1: can't wait. It's always great.
- 47:58Speaker 2: We need to put in the notes right now. Let's
- 48:01Speaker 2: get a review from you tomorrow of Dave Chappelle. I
- 48:03Speaker 2: can't wait to hear it.
- 48:05Speaker 1: Yeah. Thanks to Alex. You've met Alex before.
- 48:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 48:08Speaker 1: He's in New Orleans with us. Yeah, he offered me
- 48:11Speaker 1: the ticket. I'm like, absolutely.
- 48:13Speaker 2: Heck yeah.
- 48:14Speaker 1: Let's go. So I'm looking forward to that. I can't
- 48:17Speaker 1: wait to go for the bundle tomorrow. We'll see where
- 48:21Speaker 1: Chad's going to be in the Friday night locks as
- 48:23Speaker 1: well later in the week. Plenty to discuss. Get you
- 48:26Speaker 1: ready for the college football and NFL week ahead. Chad,
- 48:29Speaker 1: have a great day.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Same to you, Hunt.
- 48:32Speaker 1: We are back at it tomorrow. Hope you'll join us
- 48:33Speaker 1: 8 to 10 a.m. Eastern. And stay tuned. We've got...
- 48:38Speaker 1: The next round coming up and plenty more across the slate.
- 48:42Speaker 1: Kelly and Ariel, along with Joe, good luck putting up
- 48:46Speaker 1: with Chad.
- 48:46Speaker 2: Congrats to Ariel on her move also. I saw that
- 48:48Speaker 2: she's officially a Jersey native now.
- 48:50Speaker 5: Oh, nice.
- 48:50Speaker 2: Congrats, yeah.
- 48:51Speaker 1: Catch you tomorrow.
