- 0:16Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast.
- 0:19We are recording live on Sunday the 14th of December in the
- 0:24evening time, and just prior to this recording we've just heard
- 0:27some of the monstrosities that have been going on over Eastern
- 0:31Sydney. So I'm not too sure what's come
- 0:33out of that, but it doesn't sound good.
- 0:35So I hope all our listeners and all their friends and family are
- 0:38safe. I hope is with everyone over
- 0:42there, So I shall. Welcome to the show Dean
- 0:47Menzies, who's just further up the coast than me in a stormy
- 0:52path. How are you doing?
- 0:54Good mate. That's right, it's all all Four
- 0:56Seasons today. Irish heat wave in the morning
- 0:59and then Irish winter in the afternoon.
- 1:02That's been pretty crazy. It was, I reckon it hit maybe
- 1:05like 37 at one point. And then you seen on the
- 1:08forecast it was forecast for storms and you think, how's that
- 1:11going to happen? And then all of a sudden, yeah,
- 1:13the thunder's rolling in. Barely.
- 1:15We're out getting ice cream this afternoon in the car.
- 1:17Barely got home through the muck.
- 1:19It was like cross country. Well, I was up in your neck of
- 1:23the woods this afternoon, actually in the in the Swan
- 1:25Valley. Oh yeah?
- 1:27Oh, where'd you go? Called into Sandalford, done a
- 1:31bit of tasting. Would you anything you like any
- 1:35red white what we what was Yeah. Oh I purchased Chenin Blanc and
- 1:40then the guy up sold me and also walked away with a bottle of
- 1:43roses as well. I'm a sucker for a good story
- 1:47like I'll just walk. It'd be any, any varietal and
- 1:50I'll just they get me with the story and I've got a bottle.
- 1:53I didn't even like the Chenin Blanc, but he said that was his
- 1:56personal favorite. So I was like, I'll get it in
- 1:58honour of you then. They feel guilty.
- 2:00They're good like that. This is good fun, Noah.
- 2:04How old were you when you moved away from living right next to
- 2:08that area? Two years?
- 2:10No. I was 25 when I moved out of
- 2:12home, so I was in the belly. Taste and then.
- 2:16Yeah, we would. Yeah, we grew up in and around
- 2:20friends, worked at local wineries or breweries and few
- 2:23missed paws and yeah, sampling the local product.
- 2:27My parents actually have recently moved to a place that
- 2:30has a some vines out the front of theirs and Yep, come March
- 2:35next year will be picking the grapes and apparently we've got
- 2:39enough for a barrel which is about 300 bottles of wine.
- 2:42So you'll have to come over at some point and sample some
- 2:45Menzies 2025 vintage. The Menzies reserve.
- 2:49Yeah, handpicked as well, not machine picked, so top shelf.
- 2:55Very exciting I when there's an excuse for you to hop back on a
- 2:59plane. Yeah, guys, I wish.
- 3:01I'm trying to convince myself there's something nice about the
- 3:04dark mornings, the dark cold mornings, but there, there just
- 3:07really isn't. And like, I'm trying to convince
- 3:09myself it's going to be like this for like another couple of
- 3:11weeks, but I'm going to have another three months of this.
- 3:14So yeah, look, yeah, it's not the worst, but I do miss this
- 3:22sunny mornings in Perth. So you've got your long run done
- 3:26this morning already. Yeah, good.
- 3:28Up early. Done 90, just 90.
- 3:30Easy because I had the race yesterday, which we'll talk
- 3:32about. But yeah, moving all right.
- 3:36What time is daylight then? Sunrise is half eight, Yeah.
- 3:42Shit, that's a long stint, isn't?
- 3:45It so and sunset is going to be 4.
- 3:51Yeah, if you reverse it back to the herdsman slot of 6:00 AM,
- 3:55you could have two hour long run done and still be complete pitch
- 3:58block. Pitch black.
- 3:59So this morning, like I had to go out like with a headlight and
- 4:03the hive is on just because like, yeah, it's dark, but it is
- 4:08not when I'm going out. So look, I'm just happy I'm
- 4:11running and I'm not injured, so I'll take it.
- 4:14Yeah, low blow, mate, low blow. Which Speaking of the weather
- 4:21and the cold, dark Irish weather right now, it's a nice time to
- 4:26just say that the beanie hats which Owen has got together and
- 4:29got in stock over in Dublin. There are online.
- 4:32So if you jump on our Instagram page, which I never plug easy
- 4:36double pod. And to be fair, we always share
- 4:39the kind of like the start lists and the live stream links on the
- 4:42Instagram as well. So it is worthwhile following
- 4:45along if you're not already, but you can also pick yourself up a
- 4:48nice winter beanie hat for the short price of 15.
- 4:52Fine Irish EUR, European EUR. Although if you are in North
- 4:57America, like someone reached out to us yesterday to have one
- 5:00shipped to Canada. And yeah, the shipping is just a
- 5:03little bit more expensive, but give us a message and we'll sort
- 5:06you out. We'll find a way.
- 5:10I also wanted to mention I've seen this rail the other day
- 5:14that I don't think it has too much relevance to run in, but it
- 5:16was in my notes for a few weeks and never got around to saying
- 5:18it. It's, it's motivational.
- 5:21So this guy says if I give you $10 million right now, would you
- 5:26take it? Yeah, yeah.
- 5:31You'd be, you'd probably be pretty happy and like thanking
- 5:35me and asking me what God has done to provide you with this
- 5:39$10 million wouldn't. You, you just ask no questions.
- 5:43You just take it. What about if the criteria was
- 5:48that you wouldn't wake up tomorrow if you took this $10
- 5:50million? All right, I've heard this one
- 5:53so many times. Fucking hell.
- 5:57I was, I was down in the dumps when I seen, you know, they
- 6:01taking. It no, because my life is worth
- 6:05more than $10 million. Exactly.
- 6:07So you wake up tomorrow with a bloody smile on your face,
- 6:10whether it's dark and cold and raining or what.
- 6:13Absolutely. Let's go.
- 6:17You fancy a second long run now? So there we go.
- 6:20Hopefully some listeners are tuning in on a Monday morning
- 6:24that's going to help them attack the week.
- 6:29Also before we get into the main crux of the show, Owen
- 6:33interviewed Adam Fogg last week which was released and I really
- 6:36enjoyed listening to that. Got me through an hour on the
- 6:39cross trainer and thought you've done a brilliant job there,
- 6:42Owen. Obviously Fog Dog is a great
- 6:44speaker thanks to his YouTube channel.
- 6:46I think largely so. Yeah.
- 6:48You you took him through the the interview very well and it was
- 6:51very insightful hearing about his crossover from UK to
- 6:56Australia to the US. Yeah, I sort of messed up where
- 6:59he where he was born. He quickly corrected me on that
- 7:04one. He's not Coventry, he is
- 7:06Warwick. It felt a bit like the we're all
- 7:09in Liverpool, sort of, yeah. He's the same place.
- 7:12Yeah. Yeah, I can.
- 7:14I can relate. I was going to say he pulled you
- 7:15up on a technicality, but I guess given that it's certainly
- 7:18not a technicality, you tune in. Dean, did you manage to get
- 7:24through it all? I did, yeah.
- 7:26I mean, it's it's like you said, good speaker.
- 7:28It was very easily, easily listening, which was good and a
- 7:32few extra insights that you what you don't get from watching his
- 7:35YouTube or we spoke about it before.
- 7:38It's sort of, you know, he's come from running a bit in
- 7:43ounces doing different things and then his progression from
- 7:46just someone that's fairly relatable all the way to one of
- 7:48the best models in the world. Really, it's it's cool.
- 7:52It was a good story. Yeah, I was finding myself like
- 7:55having to remind myself how good of a runner he actually is
- 7:58because he's so like, as you say, relatable on a personal
- 8:01level. He's so like normal and kind of
- 8:04like almost like one of us. But then you think, no, he's
- 8:07he's definitely not one of us. He's way and above.
- 8:13Got good wheels? Which, Speaking of good movers.
- 8:18Speaking of good movers, you know, you tell me about the good
- 8:21movers. Used to wake.
- 8:25Well, your way of probably running about the same pace as
- 8:28the person we spoke to a little earlier tonight, which was Evan
- 8:32Jagger, who in his role, he has recently swapped the spikes for
- 8:38sprouts, which is a bit of a spoiler for what we how we into
- 8:42was our Segway into our chat with him.
- 8:44But we spoke to him just in his recently new role as I don't
- 8:51know exactly how you define it. It's an athlete.
- 8:53Relation. Thank you, Sir.
- 8:54Yeah, athlete relationship manager and he came on and and
- 8:58gave us some some insights into the product.
- 9:01I think we've heard so much about Gnomeo and they were kind
- 9:03enough to send us out some product to test ourselves and
- 9:07we've been using it. So then we you yeah, got to pop
- 9:11the hood on exactly what what it's all about really how to use
- 9:16it, what it does, who they currently have on their book in
- 9:23terms of other people that have signed up because they believe
- 9:25in the product. And yeah, it's application both
- 9:30in terms of sports performance, but in terms of general health.
- 9:32It was a good chat. Yeah, bonus for us that we get
- 9:36to talk to an Olympic silver medallist about part of his
- 9:39career as well. So it's it's cool chat and we'll
- 9:42release that later in the week, I guess.
- 9:45And if you have any questions about the products, you can ask
- 9:50us, we'll probably just point you back towards the the
- 9:53interview given we're not product experts, we're not
- 9:55ambassadors, we're not paid by them.
- 9:57It was purely just a chat through just being inquisitive
- 10:01really. But yeah, their website is full
- 10:04of science and stuff which will answer all your questions.
- 10:08We can as well though chat to the likes of Philip or Evan if
- 10:12we need to clarify anything I'm sure.
- 10:16Exactly right. Then structure of this show in
- 10:19terms of the formalities, we've got European cross country
- 10:22happening right now. So we'll see how we got on with
- 10:25covering those results later on the show.
- 10:27Owen is our virtual boots on the ground as he's paying as much
- 10:32attention to Dean and I talking as he is to the live stream in
- 10:35the background there. So no pressure with your review
- 10:38of the races, Owen. I'm currently watching Isaac
- 10:41Nadir come to the field of the mixed relay, an Italian guy his
- 10:45way in front. Callum Elson from GBS in second.
- 10:49France in 3rd Dennis, Portugal, Ireland are back in 6th.
- 10:53On the the second turnover the Irish lad collided into the
- 10:58Irish woman and she fell. But yeah, it's entertaining
- 11:01stuff. This.
- 11:03Cheers, Jeff back. See you in the studio.
- 11:09We also had Zasapec 10,000 meter championships last night here in
- 11:14Australia, specifically Melbourne, and there was a bit
- 11:17of a crazy mile race that happened in, it was in Hawaii,
- 11:22Honolulu with the mad deep field, both from a male and a
- 11:27female perspective. So we'll chat about that
- 11:29grandson track back in the news again.
- 11:33I was thinking about this when I was doing the agenda.
- 11:35Do we just boycott Grand Slam track items after this one and
- 11:38draw a line under it? Or we'll see how we get on I.
- 11:41Think they drew a line under themselves, but we'll get to it.
- 11:45Yeah, and MJ is there with his rubber, like erasing that line.
- 11:49I won't give up. All right then let's start with
- 11:54Zasapec. Yeah, I can.
- 11:57I'll, I'll start with the results and then we can talk
- 12:00through how the race unfolded. But in the men's race, the
- 12:03winner was Seth O'Donnell in 2759, Ed Marks was second in
- 12:072809, and Jack Rayner was third in 2815.
- 12:14Yeah, I can start by pro providing I guess a bit of
- 12:17context as to what the race was and how it played out.
- 12:20But essentially Seth O'Donnell just started driving from the
- 12:29get go, applied a lot of pressure, established a brake on
- 12:34the chase group which had Jack Rayner, Ed Marks and was it, was
- 12:41it Sam Clifford or was it Adam Goddard?
- 12:43That was, I think. Adam Goddard was.
- 12:45Yeah. Adam Goddard, Yeah, yeah.
- 12:47So those three were the three chasers and the main 2 was Seth
- 12:53O'Donnell and Stewie Mcswain. And I think they pretty much ran
- 12:59more on that that 28 minute tempo.
- 13:01So 14 minutes through through halfway and Seth did all of the
- 13:08lead being I think Stewie maybe tried to fire a couple of shots
- 13:12between say five and seven K. But as we knew, like Stewie's
- 13:17sort of not been in has been he ran one good road race earlier
- 13:22in the year in TASI I think, But then otherwise has didn't have
- 13:25the best race at the Melbourne half.
- 13:28But from all reports was training very well.
- 13:33And clearly like when sort of Jack Rayner, who's quite fit and
- 13:38and has quite the record in recent years is not able to go
- 13:41with that Seth O'Donnell pace. You know, he's putting down some
- 13:44serious pace. But Stewie looked looked very
- 13:47good. But yeah, just couldn't,
- 13:49couldn't keep with him. That's what I was thinking.
- 13:52I was so surprised when you you see Seth and Stewie put like 5
- 13:56or five more meters into Jack and the Chase Park, like within
- 14:00the first K or two. I was like, Oh well, maybe
- 14:03they've just gone a bit hard and like Jack will just kind of
- 14:06bring them in over the next mile or so.
- 14:08And it just never shifted, did it?
- 14:10Could hear on the live stream there's some comments about hey,
- 14:13like can they can that chase group bridge the gap?
- 14:17But you know when you're on your on your absolute rivet when
- 14:19you're just absolutely suffering and it is that 152025 meters,
- 14:24which it's about a S, you know, 2-3 seconds, but two or three
- 14:27seconds over 400 meters is a completely different zone and
- 14:32trying to claw that back when you're on your rivet like we've
- 14:35spoken about this before, but that lactate curve is not linear
- 14:38it's exponential. And so if you want to dig
- 14:40yourself that hole like it's hard to get out of.
- 14:44So really what you're hoping to do is to define your legs or be
- 14:48close enough light where you can just let that lactate climb and
- 14:51you're not going to have. And you just hope you can run
- 14:53over the top of them. Or you're hoping that at some
- 14:55point those guys that have gone out hot just ease off slightly
- 14:58and then you can start inching your way back.
- 15:00But it just never eventuated. Yes, you mentioned that like
- 15:04kind of 28 flat pace. I think on the stream they were
- 15:06talking about 66 second laps a lot worthy.
- 15:09So that must be what kind of equals 28.
- 15:13And Speaking of the stream, how good was Mitch Dyer?
- 15:16He he brings the energy, doesn't he?
- 15:18Yeah, he's very good. That's the sort of commentary
- 15:21that you hope to have at a lot of those major competitions.
- 15:24Like it was such a shame for that world cross trials that you
- 15:27didn't have the same colour being given to the, you know,
- 15:31the commentary. But yeah, where where the race
- 15:35got to is Stuart Mcswain ended up stepping off at around 7:00
- 15:39or 8:00 KS. I think he then stepped back on
- 15:42to try and keep going, but I'm not sure if he just run his legs
- 15:45out from underneath himself or whether or not he was perhaps
- 15:48injured. I don't know.
- 15:51Yes, I was surprised to see Ed Marks end up coming in for
- 15:55second finishing a Heather Jack given how many a Jack one prior?
- 15:59Was he going for his fifth maybe, or going for his 4th?
- 16:04I don't know not to check. I mean, he certainly won a few
- 16:08and because I was so I've got some stuff on Seth here because
- 16:12I was having to look thought you need to, we need to give the man
- 16:15the credit that he deserves. Like because off I found that
- 16:20say within the past 12 months or so, when you hear people speak
- 16:23about Seth and his training and his results and stuff, he's
- 16:27almost not taken as seriously as the performances he actually
- 16:31delivers. And I don't really understand
- 16:33why but he literally is the real deal.
- 16:36He's run a 43 second PB last night to go sub 28 which makes
- 16:43him the 25th man on the all time Australian list.
- 16:48But in the last 10 years only six of those have gone sub 28.
- 16:54So like the other 19 times are from prior to 2015 and those six
- 17:01people who have done it in the last 10 years.
- 17:03So this is the kind of caliber of athlete he's mixing it with
- 17:06over a 10 year period is Morgan McDonald, Brett Robinson, Kai
- 17:10Robinson, Stu Mcswain, Pat Tiernan and Jack Rayner.
- 17:13So besides those who are like the best of the best of this
- 17:17era, no one's been able to do what SAT's done over 10,000
- 17:21meters. And I put money on all of those
- 17:25guys weren't running gun to tape from the front for those 25
- 17:29laps. So I would imagine a lot of
- 17:30those races are set up to run fast, whereas he's literally had
- 17:33to do it all himself. And that Lakeside Stadium, I
- 17:36thinks it looks like a recently windy night too.
- 17:38So it shouldn't have been as quick as like it wouldn't have
- 17:41been the best weather. For yeah, like running sub 28 on
- 17:47just in general is fast, but when you have to put it into
- 17:49context, like he literally ran it from the front.
- 17:54Yeah, it's it's, it's a crazy, crazy result.
- 17:56And yeah, he needs to get more credit.
- 17:59Arms arms rolling like imperfect looking form.
- 18:03It got the got guys that have run what sub 3:30 for 1500 just
- 18:08sitting on your heels and yeah, just too strong, too good.
- 18:11Was very, very cool. And I also thought like, I
- 18:16remember that it must have been the year before last I went to
- 18:20the Zata PEC meet in person and I distinctly remember, I mean,
- 18:24how how could you not distinctly remember Seth?
- 18:26I didn't know he was Seth at the time.
- 18:28I just remember him being that guy would like the crazy mullet.
- 18:31And like people are almost kind of looking at him walk off like,
- 18:36oh, like, look at that guy. Like he's he's a bit muddy,
- 18:39finished like 2/3 of the way down the field.
- 18:42And he was almost like, I'm going to say no one, but he
- 18:45wasn't relevant in the race. So I looked at his kind of
- 18:48disaster pack history and he's been there four years in a row
- 18:5322232425 and his place in this have improved from 16th to 10th
- 18:59to 5th to 1st this year. So it's just like the perfect
- 19:03natural progression and that kind of shows the hard work that
- 19:07he's been putting in over a period.
- 19:09So you would look at maybe someone who finished 16th last
- 19:12night and think well the almost compared to me they're very
- 19:18relevant. But in that race they're pretty
- 19:20irrelevant. But who knows, in four years
- 19:22time they could be winning that race.
- 19:25And he's now the current 5000 and 10,000 meter Australian
- 19:29champ. People's hero, that's.
- 19:33What they're calling him on AI still that?
- 19:39Over the gun to town on him. Yeah, they cringe.
- 19:45Because I think they've received some criticism in the past for
- 19:47like almost not acknowledging them at all.
- 19:50So maybe now that they're overcompensating?
- 19:52I just strike that at the. Well, like he's giving them no
- 19:55choice. Like he's really is like the
- 19:58best distance runner in Australia at the moment.
- 20:01Like his full stop. It's a credit zone.
- 20:05Shit. Yeah, you, you go on that page
- 20:07and of the the nine photos you can see on the grid, he has he
- 20:11has three. Actually, where was that Jimmy
- 20:15Wheeling guy? DNS which he was also DNS for
- 20:19the cross country last week as well so unsure what's kind of
- 20:23going on there. But like, he's flat out posting
- 20:26on Instagram and stuff like that.
- 20:28Always excited to see where he'd end up in that race.
- 20:33Sure. The other thing was Jack Rayner
- 20:38never in the race, like from the first lap when they put the gap
- 20:43on him, surely, like obviously he's thinking, well, Seth's
- 20:48going to come back to me and Stewie kind of traditionally
- 20:51over the years has gone to the front and gone out hot.
- 20:54But afterwards he must be thinking that's I feel a bit
- 20:59deflated, like I never gave myself a chance.
- 21:02Not only did I not win it, I never had a chance to win it.
- 21:05But I just don't think he's like, he's not at the level of
- 21:08Seth O'Donnell. Like Seth O'Donnell is just
- 21:09better. Like I think what Jack doing
- 21:13like going from World Championships to Melbourne, Like
- 21:17I understand it from a financial point of view, but from a
- 21:19running point of view, like it's just not good.
- 21:21And I found if you had downtime known he's building back up.
- 21:23But like, yeah, I don't know. Seth is just better at the
- 21:28moment. Yeah, I mean, I looked at Jack's
- 21:32results as and stuff as well. And obviously Seth won it in
- 21:362759 just sub 28th and like Jackson national record holidays
- 21:41ran almost a minute quicker than that 27 O 9.
- 21:45And he's also ran sub 28th in 2019.
- 21:49So he's done it six years ago. He's then ran it in 2022-2023,
- 21:542024. So like that kind of shows where
- 21:58he's at in terms of relative to his previous levels of fitness.
- 22:03He's clearly not quite at his own peak.
- 22:06Oh. Here quick one, Adam Goddard who
- 22:10came sixth. He bet me by a second in the
- 22:14Gold Coast 10K in 2024. Fun fact, he's now around 2844.
- 22:23In that race I ran 303041 or 3042 or something like that.
- 22:30So he's literally taken 2 minutes off it.
- 22:34There's that positioning thing, then reverse with Seth.
- 22:38So like, Adam Goddard's just finished halfway down the Gold
- 22:41Coast 10K and he's now like winning all these domestic 10 KS
- 22:45and Tassie and whatnot. Yeah, and Adam, God, I think
- 22:47he's young, that kid, he's only like 20 to 20, something like
- 22:53that. I mean to be fair, you shouldn't
- 22:56be so harsh on yourself given what you're doing on the cross
- 22:59cross country scene in Ireland, but we won't spoil your race
- 23:03recaptures yet. I don't think they're at the
- 23:07same level, but I'll take any better compliment.
- 23:10Like, yeah. Yeah.
- 23:13So I don't know, do you do you make much of the the whole MTC
- 23:17conversation like, yeah, again last night, Stewie, whether it
- 23:22might have been injury or not. So it's hard to like kind of
- 23:25attribute that to an MTC poor performance.
- 23:28But like Jack's performance clearly wasn't up to where he
- 23:32has been in almost each of the last five years.
- 23:39Well, yeah, just. I don't know I can an
- 23:41observation, but I think maybe 10 years ago there was one club
- 23:45that had a lot of funding and access to funding and therefore
- 23:49created a a good pathway for athletes to, you know, dedicate
- 23:54themselves entirely to running in Australia.
- 23:58You now have multiple pathways either staying in the US, like
- 24:02you see the likes of who we'll talk about Lauren Ryan or Morgan
- 24:05McDonald and Ollie Hall, those guys that have found a way to
- 24:10become professional athletes over there.
- 24:13Or there's the likes of the pro clubs that are doing it here or
- 24:18just direct access to shoe sponsorships.
- 24:20And you've just got a lot more. And I mean, we talk about this
- 24:26Evan Jagger chat. Oh, you'll hear hear from us.
- 24:29But were you watching? I watched the Rio final today
- 24:33for the staple Chase and the attendance in that final is
- 24:37pretty poor. Like from a crowd attendance
- 24:39perspective, I think runnings come so far in the last 10 years
- 24:43in terms of popularity. So there's just a lot more
- 24:45access to good facilities and funding.
- 24:48And so, yeah, it just, I don't know, it might to me suggest
- 24:54that there's multiple pathways now for Aussie athletes, which
- 24:56is, which is good. It makes for exciting as a
- 24:59viewer. It's it's exciting to watch.
- 25:02Yeah, so you're saying essentially the playing fields
- 25:04been levelled somewhat? I think so.
- 25:08If, to put it in AFL terms, if one team had been dominating and
- 25:13winning the being top of the ladder for five years and then
- 25:16all of a sudden it's between 5 or 6 different teams.
- 25:20And then in the women's race. Oh, sorry, Alan.
- 25:24Do you want to go back live to Lagoa and Portugal?
- 25:29Yeah, for the result crossover to Portugal.
- 25:31Yeah. So the result of the mixed relay
- 25:34was Italy one Portugal came through, they got second and GB
- 25:41got M bronze. So I'm yeah, your man Isaac
- 25:45Nadir done. He done.
- 25:46Well on his last leg he crawled back like 4 places and Carl
- 25:50Nelson finished it off for England.
- 25:52He'll be happy with the bronze. And now the senior women has
- 25:55just gone live with Nadia Badacladi out in front.
- 25:58So yeah. That's all I have.
- 25:59Italian double. Italian double.
- 26:01It could be, could be. So I'll keep it up to date guys,
- 26:04but that's it from Portugal. Appreciate it on it's good.
- 26:07It's interesting to hear that that did well at the world
- 26:11champs are carrying their fall over to the European cross.
- 26:15Yeah, yeah. So in the women's 10,000 meters
- 26:19at Zata Pack, the winner was Lauren Ryan in 32 O 6, Georgia
- 26:26Gregic Gregic from New Zealand, second in 3210.
- 26:32Leanne Pompiani was 303313, just behind.
- 26:39And in terms of the way this race played out, it looked like
- 26:43I don't know how early on, but it became a race in three and
- 26:47those Liam was doing most of the work throughout the race,
- 26:51driving it. Lauren Ryan was riding shotgun
- 26:54in second. And then I suppose a bit of a
- 26:58bit of a surprise was that Georgia Greg Itch was sitting in
- 27:033rd and looking really good too, was moving really well.
- 27:06But Liam was, as expected, trying to, well, perhaps as
- 27:10expected was trying to run the legs out of the the other two,
- 27:13but just couldn't. Lauren Ryan looked really comfy
- 27:16and her last lap, I don't know if they closed in 66 or
- 27:19something like that, but they closed hard.
- 27:21I think the second last lap was 73 seconds.
- 27:24So they're winding it up. But yeah, Lauren Ryan didn't
- 27:27look the way that that they finished was was all dictated in
- 27:31that last 400 meters. And Lauren Ryan looked too good.
- 27:35Yeah, tough on Leanne. Like how I guess trying to run
- 27:40the legs off them is the only possible way.
- 27:42She probably could have won that race, but how are you meant to
- 27:45run the legs off someone who's run a minute faster than you?
- 27:48That would be like me trying to do it to you.
- 27:49It's not going to work. Yeah, I mean, I mean she.
- 27:55Went to bed the right way, but that Lauren Ryan is just better,
- 27:59isn't she? Like, there's no way Lauren Ryan
- 28:01doesn't win. Yeah, like you look at say, Seth
- 28:03O'donnell's race, right? If he doesn't take that from gun
- 28:07to tape, he he maybe lets in some guys that have got thicker
- 28:10wheels or guys that have got that that strong continuous
- 28:14drive for the last five laps. So I think he runs at the right.
- 28:17What right the right way for him.
- 28:19But he has the legs. And then in this race, like, and
- 28:23it was the same in the National Cross.
- 28:24He tried to do it and it just got done.
- 28:27Why Ken Myers, who's just had who had the aerobic capacity
- 28:32that he didn't have in the National 5K, you know, so he's
- 28:35just getting thinner and fitter, whereas in this race, yeah,
- 28:38that's right. I don't think she did anything
- 28:39wrong. She was just vetted by ladies
- 28:43that were just too fit, too good.
- 28:47Perhaps, just maybe not quite enough pressure.
- 28:50Like she was leading and she was from running, but it wasn't
- 28:54doing anything to damage the other two.
- 28:56Like they were just happy sitting there, like they were
- 28:58hardly having to hold on, or so it seemed at least.
- 29:02And then kind of in that last with the old, they were all
- 29:06together going into the bell, weren't they?
- 29:07But then as soon as it hit like 303 fifty, like Lauren passed
- 29:12that easily and gapped her straight away.
- 29:14And then kind of that Georgie, it wasn't quite as easy, but it
- 29:19Liam was never fighting back, shall we say.
- 29:23So yeah, maybe if she had, I think they were saying she was
- 29:26running, they were running like 7870 nines during like that
- 29:30middle section of the race. She probably would have had to
- 29:32squeeze a little bit harder and maybe she could have got rid of
- 29:35Georgie. But I think Lauren was always
- 29:37going to be there no matter what.
- 29:40And it's such a scary thing to do that far out, because you
- 29:42might run the legs out from underneath yourself and have
- 29:46what happens to Stewie where when the light goes, lights go
- 29:48out. It just cooked cactus.
- 29:52Yep, those were the races. It was a good, good mate.
- 29:55And the, the women's and men's under 23,000 meter races, those
- 30:00national titles, they're always, it's a bit like the in the
- 30:04Aussie rules, our draft, you know, we have like these under
- 30:0618 competitions and whoever fares well and those tend to go
- 30:09as some of the top draft picks in the AFL.
- 30:12It's the De Costello and Ondiaki 3000 meters are always hotly
- 30:18contested. And I don't know if we've got in
- 30:21front of us that the person that won the the men's race, but he
- 30:24closed in almost as quick as I think it was the second fastest
- 30:28time ever in 804 and at which I think the open men's 3000 meters
- 30:32was one in eight flat. So he looked very good.
- 30:36The top 2 looked incredibly good in that race.
- 30:38So they might be ones to watch. Alexander Cameron Smith, it was
- 30:44because he the name who the guy in second Lucas chairs that
- 30:48really stands out. And I think on the stream they
- 30:51were also kind of making a case that he was maybe the the big
- 30:54dog in the race. And then yet, shit, when that
- 30:56guy hit 200 to go, he absolutely powered away, didn't he?
- 31:02Yeah, he was like, yeah, barely touching the ground.
- 31:04Looked looked very good. Apparently that Cameron Smith
- 31:08guy is only new to, well, relatively new to running as
- 31:11well. So yeah, it could be one for the
- 31:13future. Well, he is one of the future,
- 31:14yeah. Check check his passports, he's
- 31:17in the under 20 race. He looks like fucking 25 year
- 31:20old running against kids. He's a big boy, yeah.
- 31:25Yeah. And then the women's was drama,
- 31:27wasn't it? Oh yeah, That was the one that
- 31:30was on the line, quite literally on the line.
- 31:35I miss I only got to halfway through that race.
- 31:38Oh, really? There's so the girl who's
- 31:41finished second, Imogen Baker, she'd kind of went off the front
- 31:46and had 1020 meters even going into the last lap.
- 31:50And then there's a New Zealand girl who was second, but she was
- 31:55making progress. And as you're watching it, it
- 31:58looks as though she's she's never going to close the gap.
- 32:01And then, you know, as as the lap progresses through 302
- 32:05hundred, you like you can see that the gaps closing and you're
- 32:09just wondering, has she given herself too much to do or she
- 32:13going to like time? It's a perfection.
- 32:15And then even coming off the last 100 meters, she's still got
- 32:1810 or 15 meters to close. And she literally, it's like one
- 32:22of those where they came through the line almost together because
- 32:27the difference in speed that they were travelling, as they
- 32:30hit the line, the New Zealand girl hit the tape, which is like
- 32:34a yard beyond the line, like clearly first.
- 32:37But as they physically crossed the line, it's like, how do you
- 32:41split that? And I think the official timing
- 32:44ended up splitting them by 5 hundredths of a second, which is
- 32:48F1 margins. And the girl who was chasing the
- 32:51gap end up getting the win. So that was Scarlet, Rob.
- 32:56There was no sort of crossy celebration from last year that
- 32:59that caused the upset. Thankfully not, but our
- 33:04heartbreak for the girl because they were saying that this
- 33:07happened to her last year and she finished second and she got
- 33:09done lace after leading the race.
- 33:12So you can you can imagine the drama and the in the tone of
- 33:15Mitch Dyer as the last lapse coming on.
- 33:18He's like died. Not again.
- 33:21He's, I think he's calling it our Ozzy and the New Zealand.
- 33:25They're like our Ozzy's got 10 meters.
- 33:27Come on, our Ozzy. That's so good.
- 33:31Last thing on Zata Pack was I distinctly noticed the there was
- 33:38still plenty of fans and stuff there, but compared to how it's
- 33:41been in previous years when on this kind of sponsored and
- 33:45supported the event, it it seemed like it was almost
- 33:48nowhere near what it has been. Because with on they bring
- 33:53everything that goes around the running as well.
- 33:55Obviously the running is the main event and rightly so.
- 33:58But there's food trucks, there's places where you can get a beer
- 34:02from. I'm sure they had that like beer
- 34:04tunnel on the back, in the back 100 meters.
- 34:08They had like a DJ on after the event previously.
- 34:11So like that would kind of entice the young crowds to come
- 34:14out and to hang around. And there was on themselves
- 34:18would do like they had wear tests of the shoes and they were
- 34:21doing like the other wheel to spin where you could win like
- 34:24free socks and free cap and all this sort of stuff.
- 34:27And yeah, just from last night, I could only see from the
- 34:30stream, whereas on the previous ones where on I'd been there,
- 34:34I'd been there in person and could notice the difference.
- 34:39Which is a bit of a shame because it seems like from
- 34:42everything else, athletics is trending in the right direction
- 34:45in terms of momentum and growth and bringing in a new market and
- 34:49a new kind of fan. Whereas last night was look like
- 34:52it's a bit of a backwards step. Yeah, it's a shame.
- 34:56I don't know if it's like they need to part fund, you know,
- 34:59with Athletics Victoria or whoever it is the the host to
- 35:05find a sustainable solution. But yeah, it certainly lost some
- 35:08of its shine compared to when it had the the backing of on and
- 35:12all the trimmings that came with it, at least aesthetically.
- 35:16Because there is still some like on track nights in Europe, like
- 35:19there's still one in Paris this coming year, there's one in
- 35:22Vienna. I don't know it has it.
- 35:26I'll just double check now because there was the night of
- 35:28the 10,000 PBS in the UK that was cancelled last year, so I
- 35:33wonder if on will have it this year.
- 35:38Yeah, that could be an interesting thing that you
- 35:41highlight there is, is the fact that they no longer have that UK
- 35:45race. Is that anything to do with it?
- 35:47Is there's a lot of stuff that we don't know about as to reason
- 35:50and as to why they've stepped back or who knows, it could be
- 35:54the event as chosen not to partner with on.
- 35:57But yeah, don't have that knowledge.
- 36:01All right, then over to Hawaii, which coast of America is.
- 36:07We've got some American listeners as well.
- 36:08This is going to sound awful. Is Hawaii off the east or the
- 36:11West Coast? West, isn't it?
- 36:14Is it? W is best apparently.
- 36:20I'll take your word for it. So this is a very interesting
- 36:23race whereby the women are given a 31 second head start, but the
- 36:28field is mixed so they all race the same race.
- 36:31The the race the same route and the men essentially chase the
- 36:36women and the 31 second gap is set up so that theoretically the
- 36:42playing field is evened and they would all cross the finish line
- 36:45at the same time given everyone's performances were
- 36:49equal to provide a bit of a handicap system.
- 36:52And the prize money is interesting because it reflects
- 36:55that. So the race is paid irrespective
- 37:00of gender first across the line. So if the woman takes the 31
- 37:04second head start and finishes ahead of the first man, she gets
- 37:0810K. And if the first man is the
- 37:10first man, he doesn't get 10K, he gets paid as the second place
- 37:13finisher. So how it works?
- 37:1610K for 1st, 5K for 2nd, 3K for 3rd, 1500 and 4th and $1000 for
- 37:23fifth. That's in U.S. dollars.
- 37:26And how they do compensate the poor males if they can't catch
- 37:30the women is that the first male across the line gets a $2500
- 37:35bonus. And what's interesting was they
- 37:38put a $10,000 world record bonus on the line.
- 37:43And the context is that Elliott Giles has the men's world record
- 37:48on the road mile of 351, which when we read the results is
- 37:53slightly irrelevant. It wasn't really close to that.
- 37:57However, the women's world record for the road mile is 4
- 38:01minutes and 20 seconds .98 from Welt Edgy.
- 38:05Now that is somewhat relevant given that Sinclair Johnson of
- 38:09the US finished first woman and 1st across the line overall in a
- 38:14421.66, so she's just missed the world record.
- 38:20That was had you one. She's dirty as well.
- 38:21She's got popped. Was it whereabouts so actually
- 38:26popped? Come on, let's be real, if
- 38:30you're not there, you're hiding. She was the one, yeah, who was
- 38:35like, pulled out or whatever, wasn't it?
- 38:36Yeah. Yeah, fucking Ethiopia.
- 38:38We're going to send her. And then why?
- 38:40They were like, no, you're not, but speaking about people who
- 38:45are doping, Umm Mokateer, he posted on Instagram the other
- 38:48day and umm, it actually sort of pissed me off.
- 38:52There's probably my double trouble.
- 38:55Umm like he was wearing like an ASIC like shoe that was like
- 39:00recently released. So ASIC are still like
- 39:03supporting him even though he's been banned, which is, I don't
- 39:08know, like I don't like that. Was he always an ASIC athlete
- 39:12though? I thought he'd maybe Adidas now.
- 39:15Now he's been at six for a long time.
- 39:18I think he's wearing the new Nova Blast.
- 39:20He's wearing ASIC super shoes that recently I like.
- 39:23I thought I don't know, ASIC should have dropped them.
- 39:25It's not great luck, is it? No, so I'm not buying their
- 39:28shoes anymore. We just did a wear test with
- 39:33them last week, Ron. We really like their products.
- 39:38Dean and I just started the relationship and there we go,
- 39:42fire all over. It Nathan, probably.
- 39:46No. I love ASIC.
- 39:48I love. ASIC, you have a great, great
- 39:50products. We think.
- 39:52Still support. Apparently he's running in sore
- 39:58apparel. No, moving on.
- 40:06Been there, done that. Back to the results of this
- 40:10race. So Sinclair Johnson won and she
- 40:12took 10,000 U.S. dollars home. If she was 7/10 quicker, she
- 40:16might have been taken 20,000 U.S. dollars home.
- 40:19But she beat Nikki Hilts then that was for AUS record, by the
- 40:23way. She didn't get the world record,
- 40:24but she did take the US record. Nikki Hilts, who has been
- 40:30probably the best US middle distance runner in the past
- 40:32couple of years, was second in 424.81.
- 40:36So Sinclair has won by over 3 seconds to one of their most
- 40:42fierce competitors. So that's a pretty dominating
- 40:44win in a mile distance. And then Josh Howie was third
- 40:49across the line, first male in 355.15 S, backing up his 600
- 40:57meter indoor world record from last week.
- 41:01Josh Howie there continue in great form over the winter
- 41:04period. Did you guys listen to the
- 41:07Coffee Club podcast this week? Yeah, they were going to go for
- 41:14the world. Record.
- 41:15Well George Beamish wasn't talking to BK, but Ollie Horan
- 41:19sounds like Jared were both iron off the world record, weren't
- 41:23they? Which, yes, so Yarid has
- 41:26finished 6th in 357, giving himself 6 seconds worth of gap,
- 41:32and Ollie Hall was 14th in a 359, which is 8 seconds behind
- 41:38the world record. I mean, I appreciate them kind
- 41:42of saying that because it makes it more fun when you put it on
- 41:44the line. But yeah, maybe they'll they'll
- 41:46get it next time. Yeah, but I could, I could go
- 41:50out and say I'm going to run 27 minutes in Valencia when let's
- 41:53be real, it's not realistic. Like, yeah, kudos to me for
- 41:58saying I'm going to do it, but like, it's not real, no.
- 42:04No, I agree it's a lot of people hide behind the goals though,
- 42:08and like so conscious of being criticized if they don't quite
- 42:12get there. So I, I think it's good that
- 42:15they say and then if they're all so happy to be poked for not
- 42:19when they don't get there, even better.
- 42:21Or if they come on and take the piss out of themselves.
- 42:23Like shit, we were, we were thinking we were in world record
- 42:25shape. We've we've, we've had a bit of
- 42:28a nightmare. And like there's a there's 180°
- 42:31turn in the race, which totally like breaks.
- 42:34Momentum isn't there in this one, is there?
- 42:37Yeah, I think so. Apparently that'll be where you
- 42:40come into it when you turn abouts.
- 42:43Yeah. Did you see the Japanese during
- 42:44their turns? The pirouettes, Yeah.
- 42:51Hobbs Kessler finished as the second male, so good to see him
- 42:54kind of getting back in the monks that he finished ahead of
- 42:58yard in the Goose. Who was the 3rd male?
- 43:00And then yeah, you've got Jodie Beamish, Nico Young, Donovan
- 43:04Brazier, Ollie Ho, Sage Herter Clacker, Heather McClain, also
- 43:09all the big names a lot further down the field.
- 43:13Sage has to Clacker there 435. Then you look at Sinclair
- 43:17Johnson is 14 seconds ahead of over a mile and you could think
- 43:23maybe that Sage has to Clack has just had a really bad run, which
- 43:26maybe she has had a bit of a bad run.
- 43:28But then like Heather McLean, who's also down there with her,
- 43:31she's another like fantastic middle distance girl, so.
- 43:35And it didn't sage her to Clacker just finished second at
- 43:39the trials for the world cross. So she's representing Team USA
- 43:45at their home world cross country championship.
- 43:48So she's just won herself a national vest in a very hotly
- 43:52contested race. So yeah, to I think it talks.
- 43:58And Nikki Hiltz has been was very dominant in the US trials
- 44:04and was the top place American I think at the world champs.
- 44:08So to dominate them, Sinclair Johnson must be absolutely fine.
- 44:17You'd wonder how an event like this makes money because every
- 44:22single athlete there is 100% like a paid to fly over.
- 44:27That's real. Like how does and there's big
- 44:30prize money as well. Like how do they make money when
- 44:33an event like that? I wonder if there's some other
- 44:35races are running festival in and around the elite race.
- 44:38But and also I wonder how much incentive they need.
- 44:43It's end of season and it's a beautiful destination.
- 44:46I wonder if they can leverage that plus a nice race hotel or
- 44:50something. But yeah, it would be a big
- 44:52investment for sure. Good sponsors so that maybe the
- 44:57GST sponsors pivoted. To your point about sage hair to
- 45:04Clacker as well, if you look in between them, what that Wayne
- 45:07Colossi is, is there. She finished 12th and didn't she
- 45:11win or was in the mix again in those trials?
- 45:14So just adds weight to how well that Sinclair Johnson has run
- 45:17there. So she's clearly chose not to do
- 45:21those trials. Focus on maybe indoors or
- 45:24something instead. And is it where you go?
- 45:28And just one other thought on the men's race, the fact that
- 45:31Ollie Hall was prepared to come out and say what he did say was
- 45:34that him and Jared are doing really good workouts.
- 45:37So they, they, they, you, when you're doing good workouts, you
- 45:40know, you're fit. And so these guys know they're
- 45:42fit and they got absolutely dusted by Howie.
- 45:46So suggests what sort of shape he's in, noting he just ran a
- 45:49indoor record or be at a 600 meter distance that's not really
- 45:53ran that often. Yeah, but like who the hell is
- 45:57in mile world record shape in December?
- 46:00Like how fit? I think he's just trying to
- 46:02convince himself he's fair 1. Because.
- 46:05His head isn't the strongest Dolly, is it?
- 46:08Well, for the past few years he's been in his own head,
- 46:10apparently. Well, he says this as well, so
- 46:13maybe he's just trying to reverse ecology.
- 46:16Well, he's on that mixed relay team, isn't he, for the world
- 46:19Cross, So he would have been wanting a good one here for a
- 46:21bit of a confidence boost. I'm not sure that really serves
- 46:25him in that sense. Probably get over the top of the
- 46:28Irish and the Brits. We'll see in a couple of weeks.
- 46:32Well, lots of things Irish are in, some that send in a mixed
- 46:35relay team. They're still running on that.
- 46:39No, they didn't do too well either.
- 46:42Unless we have any more cross country results, which I don't
- 46:45think we will, that's, that's us from a results perspective.
- 46:48And we'll, we'll move into the news agenda items.
- 46:53So I don't know if you've seen this, Boston announced their, it
- 46:56wasn't their elite field. It was kind of like the headline
- 46:59acts. So they announced 2 males and
- 47:01two females for the 2026 version of the marathon.
- 47:05So John Korea is back to defend his title, as is Sharon Lokhedi.
- 47:11So they've got both reign and champions from both the men's
- 47:14and the women's side. They've also signed up Connor
- 47:17Mantz who's the reigning current American or area record holder,
- 47:22and they've got Emily Sisson who is the female area record
- 47:26holder. So decent starts to their elite
- 47:29fields. Very decent like, but I don't
- 47:36know Boston given asterisks besides your results.
- 47:38If it's Boston, isn't it because it's not downhill?
- 47:41So like, they're just going there because they're going to
- 47:45get a. Fat paycheck.
- 47:47Yeah, it is. It's like a, if you're doing it
- 47:51from our point of view where we're just racing ourselves and
- 47:54trying to post a faster time than we ever have before, It's
- 47:58it's a hard 1 to justify, I reckon because like, I don't
- 48:02know, you just selfishly and you just want to be out there
- 48:05getting a better time. But then if you run, if you run
- 48:07a PB at Boston, can you even claim that that's your PB going
- 48:12forward? I don't know.
- 48:13This could get me in struggle. Yeah.
- 48:15I'm seeing a lot of people claiming that CIM times
- 48:18recently, you know, the how that was just raced.
- 48:20So I mean, I'll be claiming Boston over that.
- 48:26Yeah, I wouldn't claim. Likewise.
- 48:28Oh yeah, No, no, that would. Like I'd even struggle to claim
- 48:32a 5K road race time that isn't like athletic certified because
- 48:38God only knows if it's the proper 5K distance.
- 48:42No, you can't climb it if it's not certified.
- 48:45Yeah, that's like loads of these Irish Rd. races.
- 48:47They're not certified. This is my I think half the
- 48:50that's the thing with a lot of those Victorian races that a lot
- 48:55of them are on there. At least I never used to be.
- 48:57I'm certified, which is embarrassing given it's not that
- 49:02hard to. You literally have time and
- 49:04distance in racing and you can't get time.
- 49:07It's the same. We have this race down South in
- 49:09Busselton and I've emailed the organizers back in the day just
- 49:13to say I'll pay for the fee to get it certified and they said
- 49:16no. And it's like it just, it's
- 49:20disappointing. You literally have two things,
- 49:22which is you know, the time it takes you to run the distance
- 49:25and ensuring that the distance is properly certified.
- 49:31Yeah, I don't think it's, it's not eligible for world records
- 49:33and stuff, is it? Therefore my moral compass would
- 49:38steer me to be saying, well, it's not eligible for my own
- 49:41personal record if the fastest person in the world can't claim
- 49:44it. And the point to point element
- 49:48adds in the whole. Like you could run with a
- 49:50tailwind even if it was flat and had a legal elevation profile.
- 49:56If you had a tailwind then technically you could get away
- 50:01with claiming it, but morally you'd know deep down that you're
- 50:05stealing one. I think the issue is like, is it
- 50:08the OTQ blurriness of some of these like in the, for the US
- 50:13folks, they can, a lot of these races allow you to run an
- 50:17Olympic trials qualifying time. So whilst it's not eligible for
- 50:21those, it's eligible, it fits in with that.
- 50:23So that's where it gets a bit messy, but anyway.
- 50:28Yeah. So Boston is not eligible for
- 50:30world records because Rd. world record rules require a start
- 50:34finish separation of less than 50% of the total race distance
- 50:38and a net drop of less than one metre per kilometre.
- 50:42So Boston's point to point and net downhill beyond that
- 50:45threshold. So it hits neither of the
- 50:47criteria. Which?
- 50:51Just thinking on that, you could definitely find a race that fits
- 50:55within that. Like what does that mean?
- 50:56You're allowed 200 meters of elevation loss.
- 51:01Half a meter per kilometer for. 20 all right, half a meter per
- 51:06kilometer. So you're talking 20 meters.
- 51:08Fuck off. But then you could do it where
- 51:10the providing wind is for 50% of the race.
- 51:12So is it saying you can you can finish within 20 kilometers of
- 51:15the start finishing? Yeah, yeah.
- 51:19So if you like that, that's you could definitely manipulate like
- 51:22that to get a good outcome. That's to be 1/2 out and back
- 51:27half point to point, but you just take the tailwind for 75%
- 51:32before you turn back 25%. Yeah, punch into it.
- 51:37Punch into it for the with the pacemakers for the 1st 25%.
- 51:40Then hook around, peel off the pacemakers and send it.
- 51:44There you go. We'll, we'll utilize the Frio
- 51:47Doctor and we'll be running up the the Perth coast for about 30
- 51:52K easy double race gone. Boys, we're back over to
- 51:57Portugal. The women's senior race has just
- 52:01finished. Nadia Bad Katie well Nadia
- 52:05battle claddy from Italy. She crossed the line 1st 15
- 52:09minutes behind her is. 15 minutes. 15 seconds behind her
- 52:15is Megan Keats from England. She got second and then third
- 52:20was this Chan girl from from Turkey.
- 52:23She's umm Kenyan originally, but.
- 52:26She won it before. Yeah, yeah, she's all she's been
- 52:29there a long time. But it was just a trade on for a
- 52:32lot of the race and then by the cloudy just put on the burners
- 52:35Bush. Fun fact, the girl who finished
- 52:39the third in Valencia, Chloe Herbier for Belgium from
- 52:43Belgium, She ran 220 in Valencia.
- 52:46She came sixth. No way 6th or 7th in this race
- 52:50area. Bloody hell, that's what?
- 52:55Yeah, two weeks. No, it wasn't last week.
- 52:59It. Wasn't last week game, was it?
- 53:01Yeah, Far, yeah. So yeah, she probably didn't
- 53:06even jog until like, Wednesday. She have a shuttle know me after
- 53:09the race. So senior man is up next, so
- 53:18I'll go back to you guys in the studio.
- 53:21Thanks mate. What's the weather like on the
- 53:24ground there over in Portugal where you are?
- 53:27Yeah, it's a, it's pretty warm. Well, it's a bit overcast, but
- 53:31it's not like Ireland here. Ireland where it's like windy
- 53:34and wet. But yeah, I've got some cream
- 53:36on. What does?
- 53:38What does the course look like by the way?
- 53:39Does it look tough or pretty easy?
- 53:42It's, it looks like go Kart track.
- 53:44It's all windy and bendy and little hills and yeah, it's
- 53:48weird. Really, really weird.
- 53:49It's like on a sandy, gravelly sort of thing.
- 53:52I've seen a photo of Callum Elson when he was doing this
- 53:55little shakeout yesterday and he looked like he was handling over
- 53:58something if they got any objects on there.
- 54:00They just have 3 little like WAVY bumps if you get me.
- 54:07But yeah, it's a really unique course.
- 54:11OK, thanks. I'll let you go back to it.
- 54:13And TuneIn. Yeah, next item on the news
- 54:18agenda is Grand Slam track bankruptcy.
- 54:21So this week they released a formal press communications
- 54:25statement that they had a comp. They're going through a
- 54:29comprehensive reorganization to position the league for
- 54:32sustainable long term growth, which is like the headline
- 54:35sentence and then like shoved in there in the background is to
- 54:38facilitate this. We filed for voluntary
- 54:40bankruptcy trying to just slip it in.
- 54:45They intend to use this process to stabilize the finances,
- 54:48implement efficient cost and operating model and position it
- 54:51for long term success. They those couple of KPIs or
- 54:57whatever you call them, they should have thought about that
- 55:00before launch and really shouldn't they?
- 55:02I should have thought that with the term shape.
- 55:06They will have the ability to. Apparently this will help enable
- 55:10them to have the ability to return for future seasons.
- 55:14Make of that what you will. In the filing there's a few tick
- 55:17box questions where they have to state how many creditors within
- 55:22certain ranges, how how much liabilities and how much assets
- 55:26they have. So there are multiple options,
- 55:30maybe like 9 options within each question.
- 55:34So the creditors one falls between 200 and 999.
- 55:39So it could be anywhere there. That means how many people they
- 55:42owe money to and that was relative to the other options.
- 55:48I think it was maybe like the fourth or fifth highest 1.
- 55:51So wasn't crazy. But I mean, yeah, 200 to 999 is
- 55:56a lot of people. The liabilities, so kind of how
- 56:00much they're responsible for is 10 to $50 million.
- 56:05And that was one of the highest options that you could be
- 56:07choosing. Then the assets is listed at
- 56:11under $50,000 and that was one of the lowest thresholds they
- 56:16could be choosing. So they've if you were to
- 56:19probably score this from some relativity, it's probably like
- 56:22the worst sort of answers they could be providing their.
- 56:28The statement isn't looking too good and dare I say, without
- 56:33some crazy unexpected investment, the league will not
- 56:37be returning for future seasons. And they probably won't be
- 56:41settling with any of these creditors either.
- 56:44Did I hear that they have set the money they give to the
- 56:47athletes they have to get that back off them?
- 56:50Yes, something like that, wasn't it?
- 56:51They'll they've like approached them to ask for it back because
- 56:55in like the legality of it all that when it comes down to in
- 56:59which priority they owe money to that athletes aren't the first
- 57:03ones. Which I don't think I'd be given
- 57:07that money back now, to be fair. No way you'd be ghosting them,
- 57:12wouldn't you? Especially when you've only been
- 57:16paid half in the 1st place and then they're asking for that
- 57:18half back. Yeah, you take a hike.
- 57:22How have they cooked this so bad?
- 57:24I do not understand. Like from the outside, it's just
- 57:29like it was never going to work. MJ's had a dream and he's had no
- 57:34one to check his dream. They've all just rolled with it.
- 57:39So yeah, I mean, I don't know whether we'll we'll speak about
- 57:42it again because it's always like the same kind of story and
- 57:48it's never really like clear doesn't actually provide me with
- 57:52much insight or anything. It's just like, Oh yeah, Grand
- 57:56Slam's in the shit again. But they're trying to position
- 57:58it that they're not that bad. And then a couple of weeks later
- 58:01there'll be another story where it's slightly worse.
- 58:04So unless anything drastic happens, we'll we'll leave Grand
- 58:08Slam here. Last item on the news agenda was
- 58:12I seen a reel. I think I sent it to you.
- 58:14Or maybe you want to use sensor to me where some you know, these
- 58:17like meta glasses where you can like it's got a camera buried in
- 58:21them, but they're just a pair of sunglasses.
- 58:24Oh, and she said, Oh God, did you see the the Oakley ones?
- 58:28Where on the image it it must sink to your watch in your heart
- 58:33rate strap because when you play back the video record and it's
- 58:37got like live your pace and your heart race.
- 58:41I was literally thinking of this on my long run this morning.
- 58:45So you can say, oh meta, how fast am I going or like, what's
- 58:50my heart rate instead of literally just looking at your
- 58:52watch, like putting your eyes down to look at your hand and
- 58:56looking at the right, like I really, really do not.
- 58:59Maybe from a content point of view because there is the camera
- 59:03and it's sort of like of real like life view of what you're
- 59:06looking at if you're as you're racing, but for the general Joe.
- 59:10So it is the biggest waste of money ever.
- 59:13Now, to be fair, I bought a pair of Oakleys and when I came to
- 59:17Australia because like, oh, it's going to be sunny.
- 59:19I'll need them. Biggest mistake ever.
- 59:21There's such a waste of money. Any pair of glasses will do
- 59:24exact same job. Right, So there's Oakley and the
- 59:28bin as well. Dean, I've got to the list.
- 59:33No, I I agree people are going to be wearing them to be like,
- 59:38come with me on A5 Ki don't want to see any of that stuff.
- 59:42But like the way Josh Kerr wears them on the track.
- 59:45It's probably doesn't give you too much insight for a track
- 59:47race, but say in the marathons if people are wearing these,
- 59:52imagine the level of like analysis and insight you're able
- 59:55to get compared to just watching these streams which we often
- 59:59criticize and missing the moves because of outbreaks.
- 1:00:02Imagine you can literally tune into the athletes vision and see
- 1:00:06what their heart rate is and how it changes when they like.
- 1:00:09Try and break away from that group and you can see exactly
- 1:00:12when they're falling off. Yeah, on that.
- 1:00:15I don't doubt you guys and I know we're we're limited on our
- 1:00:19non running chat, but we've maybe got a little bit of a
- 1:00:22quota here. But were you watching the T100
- 1:00:25finale by any chance? It was on Friday afternoon, but
- 1:00:29the final race I think was in Qatar.
- 1:00:31Hayden Wilde was off in front. Then there was 3 chases all
- 1:00:36running together. And then there was Morgan
- 1:00:38Pearson, who you might hear the coffee club guys sometimes talk
- 1:00:42about. I think he trains out of
- 1:00:43Colorado sometimes. He was running the quickest run
- 1:00:46splits of anyone, running about 3 minute K pace for this 20 odd
- 1:00:49K run. And he just gobbles up these
- 1:00:52three guys in front of him and one and they're all got heart
- 1:00:55rate monitors on, so they're all showing percentage of Max heart
- 1:00:58rate. And the guy on the front who's
- 1:01:00the least credentialed runner of the three of these three chases,
- 1:01:04he, he's already at about 90% of Max heart rate.
- 1:01:08And then the other guys are sitting mid 80s.
- 1:01:10And then Morgan Pearson comes past And this, this guy who's
- 1:01:14the least experienced goes with Morgan Pearson holds on.
- 1:01:18And you can see that it's that that changes colours, the, the
- 1:01:21percentage of Max once it gets to a certain colour.
- 1:01:23And this guy's completely redlining and his heart rate's
- 1:01:26telling the story. And sure enough, as you know,
- 1:01:28with that lactate curve and the, you know, those inflection
- 1:01:31points and he's, he's spending time above that holds with these
- 1:01:34guys for about holds Morgan Pearson's wheel or fate for
- 1:01:38about all of two or three minutes, but then creates a gap
- 1:01:41on these guys then for another chaos.
- 1:01:43So holds off them. And then sure enough, the
- 1:01:46inevitable happens. He's absolutely flooded, gets
- 1:01:48gobbled up, get speed out the back.
- 1:01:50And so it's just cool insight. And it's also just good to
- 1:01:54explain Physiology. And that's where sometimes data
- 1:01:57has a a useful place around your physiological limits.
- 1:02:02But sure they did only glasses to it's.
- 1:02:04Just a high right there. It's a technology already, yes.
- 1:02:09I think it would be cool to see like, Josh Kerr's perspective if
- 1:02:12he was wearing them, like to see the chaos in Let's See a 1500,
- 1:02:15because sometimes they are totally chaotic.
- 1:02:18I think it would be cool, like, to see like where he's looking
- 1:02:20or like that sort of thing. But umm, yeah.
- 1:02:24I don't know if there's a place for these glasses for like,
- 1:02:29let's say us. What about adventure racing and
- 1:02:31stuff maybe? Oh yeah, that'd be cool.
- 1:02:35That sort of stuff. You don't want to see them on
- 1:02:37bloody influences, do you? And you just know that's where
- 1:02:40they're going to go. Probably from like a brand
- 1:02:42strategy point of view as well. That's where they'll push them
- 1:02:45because that's where the market's just booming.
- 1:02:47All these like kind of the the new to running scene who are
- 1:02:51buying every kind of which gadget that's going.
- 1:02:57But yeah, there's definitely. Faster.
- 1:03:01They make you walk faster. How much are they?
- 1:03:04I'm looking it up here. This could be you.
- 1:03:08Instead of the treadmill, get a pair of glasses.
- 1:03:10Imagine that we see that cross country from yesterday.
- 1:03:13Imagine if you could, we could have just streamed that straight
- 1:03:15onto the website onto, you know, easy double Instagram live.
- 1:03:23Straight up athlete's eyes. The £500, $500.
- 1:03:31Yeah, we've got a little kiss, guys.
- 1:03:33We do not have a Kitty. Well, it's Christmas is coming.
- 1:03:37Your new your race in Valencia. Oh, you've already had your
- 1:03:41Christmas present. I've knew you've got the new
- 1:03:43Pumas. Yeah, that is my Christmas
- 1:03:46present, Yeah. So hopefully they do me good.
- 1:03:52All right, see then I've between your Portugal coverage of you
- 1:03:57got time, is now a good slot for you to do your race recap or
- 1:04:00should we go to Dean first? No.
- 1:04:03Well, I'll go through my week because the men are just
- 1:04:06starting off, so by the time they're finished you should be
- 1:04:09good. OK.
- 1:04:12So let me just get Strava. Maybe do you want to just give
- 1:04:16us a race recap maybe or like the likely not the weekly and
- 1:04:20then like say 4-8 hours out maybe.
- 1:04:23Yeah, perfect. Umm, So I didn't really taper
- 1:04:28too much for this race because umm, it's not like a big like
- 1:04:34wasn't worth really tapering for because the Valencia one like
- 1:04:37there's no point tapering like loads now before Valencia.
- 1:04:41But so Friday I jogged. So I've sort of this thing where
- 1:04:48normally I take a rest day on a Friday, but I always jogged
- 1:04:52today for a race. The Thursday I done 60 minutes
- 1:04:57and then 10 by 10 seconds, rides just chilling.
- 1:05:01And the 60 minutes was 15 kilometers at 434 pace.
- 1:05:06So yeah, that was the Thursday. Then Friday, I normally take a
- 1:05:11rest day, but because it was Dave Forays, I just got out for
- 1:05:1430 minutes, shake out the legs at six KM, 430 fours.
- 1:05:19And then for the race, I just got it from my usual warm up, 15
- 1:05:25minutes, then two by two-minute threshold.
- 1:05:28And then, yeah, I knew there was another good guy in this race.
- 1:05:32His name's Kevin McGraw and he's run like 148-4800 there two
- 1:05:37weeks ago. He's around 1414 for a 5K on the
- 1:05:40road. So like he is, he's really fast,
- 1:05:43put it that way. And I knew he was either going
- 1:05:47to work out to one of two ways. He was going to go off really,
- 1:05:50really hard. And if that happened, I was just
- 1:05:54going to well, depending on how hard he went down, I was going
- 1:05:57to let him go a little bit and try and reel him in or he was
- 1:06:01going to just sit in behind me. And as soon as he don't ended up
- 1:06:06doing that and I was like, OK, I'm going to have to just push
- 1:06:10here from the from the off because I cannot have this.
- 1:06:13I just sitting in my me. So that is what I did and
- 1:06:16conditions were pretty mucky, umm there was a few green areas,
- 1:06:20but like again 15 mil spikes, umm, they weren't much good and
- 1:06:25it was really, really mucky. So it was a 5 lap course.
- 1:06:29So I think after like 2 1/2 laps I sort of gapped Kevin a little
- 1:06:33bit and then to be honest he just sort of jogged it in and I
- 1:06:36just kept on going. So I ended up winning by a
- 1:06:38little bit but umm yeah, it was just nice to win the so that was
- 1:06:41like my area, so the Mead senior cross country.
- 1:06:44So it's nice to win that. And the team actually won gold
- 1:06:47as well. The first time my team, Tara, we
- 1:06:51won gold since like 1978 or something like that.
- 1:06:54So yeah, it's my first time actually ever having a team,
- 1:06:57like a running team basically to like compete well, running as
- 1:07:03part of a team. So yeah, it was really, really
- 1:07:04cool just for the parish. And also, yeah, I was happy when
- 1:07:07it was sort of caps off like a nice cross country season.
- 1:07:10And so he's pretty solid highlight under sub 150.
- 1:07:13Is it 500 and 1410 for 5K? Yeah, and I don't know what his
- 1:07:19mile time is. I'll get it here now as well.
- 1:07:21He's a lot for him. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:07:24So like he is he is really, really good and he's, I think
- 1:07:27he's definitely in sub 4 minute shape.
- 1:07:29He just needs the race. And so yeah, like he won the
- 1:07:34national indoor 800 last year. So he is really, really good.
- 1:07:39And see, I just was not letting him sit behind me because it
- 1:07:42would be just a little set kick for him.
- 1:07:44Yeah. Shit, so you didn't want the
- 1:07:47smoke off the turn off laps? No, but he's got like cross
- 1:07:51country, like the way the cross country, it's so mucky.
- 1:07:55It suits me down to the ground because I've big, massive like
- 1:07:58tree trunk legs. So I'm able to sort of withstand
- 1:08:01the sucking of the muck a little bit more than he's really
- 1:08:04lightened. It just wouldn't be his cup of
- 1:08:07tea at all. So if it was a dryer course, he
- 1:08:09definitely could about me. But because it was just that
- 1:08:12sapping energy muck, I'm just that little bit stronger.
- 1:08:17But yeah, how? Did you feel no taper?
- 1:08:21I felt all right. I did feel good.
- 1:08:23So like I had I done a session actually it was a big storm in
- 1:08:28Ireland on the Tuesday, so I had to do my session on the
- 1:08:33treadmill. So I had to drive to like the
- 1:08:35gym and do my I think was like 8 by AK and I've sent them K's and
- 1:08:40three minute kilometers off 62nd break.
- 1:08:43So like I am fit and I sort of I'd ask myself to be able to I
- 1:08:48could be stronger than I'm like 5K on the road is totally
- 1:08:52different to AK cross country in the mock.
- 1:08:57Like it's just it's a totally different game.
- 1:08:59So yeah, I did sort of back myself, but yeah, I just, it
- 1:09:03was, I was so happy for the team to win like gold just meant a
- 1:09:06lot to me and the lads. And it was like this time last
- 1:09:10year, umm, the chairman of my club, they Tara finished second
- 1:09:15last year. So this time last year I was in
- 1:09:18Australia obviously and he was like, oh, and we're after
- 1:09:20finishing second, when are you coming home?
- 1:09:22So it was like it was like a year in the making.
- 1:09:24This was and that's cool. There was, I think there was
- 1:09:27like 12 lads on the team so like everyone gets a medal and yeah
- 1:09:31no, just it meant a lot for everyone.
- 1:09:33That's cool. How many have been in the race
- 1:09:36then if there's 12 per team? There was like, no, we just had
- 1:09:39a load of boys. I think there was 60, but it was
- 1:09:42the biggest turn out in a meet senior cross country event.
- 1:09:46So yeah, I know they've done it well.
- 1:09:49So that senior races were on 1st.
- 1:09:51So it was like loads of little kids along the course, like
- 1:09:54watching yeah and cheering you on.
- 1:09:56Yeah, it was cool. No, I haven't quite got to the
- 1:09:59point where there's an easy double shout out just yet.
- 1:10:02We're still still trying to work that.
- 1:10:06In Yeah, yeah. I know I was looking for the
- 1:10:10heart. I just met but did anyone know
- 1:10:13does any? Do people recognize you based on
- 1:10:15the just from knowing you as a local?
- 1:10:18No, unfortunately. Not no.
- 1:10:21Someone tagged us in the story. Was that the guy who came second
- 1:10:27Kevin Kevin McGraw The kids can all so Kevin Mcgraw's share the
- 1:10:32rail of him and Owen running through the mud and then the two
- 1:10:35of them do like an interview afterwards.
- 1:10:37Pretty cool so far and he's put the kids can laugh at me now.
- 1:10:43Easy double pod man himself. Great running Owen.
- 1:10:45Oh, there you go. But the lad who made the reel,
- 1:10:48his name's Vlad and he's he's based in Dublin, but he's mates
- 1:10:54with a few boys from me. So he came.
- 1:10:56He's sort of like does this like he's really good on Instagram
- 1:11:00and TikTok. He's sort of like a running once
- 1:11:02the influencer was sort of him. He documents his training, let's
- 1:11:05say a lot. And so he was there and he's
- 1:11:07handy with the, he's pretty good, like editing and all that.
- 1:11:10So he made the real and it turned out really, really good.
- 1:11:14Shout out to shout out to Vlad. Yeah, he done well.
- 1:11:17You didn't do too bad on the camera there went went shy.
- 1:11:20I feel like doing this podcast has made me way more
- 1:11:24comfortable, like public speaking, like even in work they
- 1:11:27asked me to do, they asked me to do a thing for like men's mental
- 1:11:30health and like, I actually didn't mind.
- 1:11:32Like talking to the camera and answering questions just makes
- 1:11:34you more confident. I don't know.
- 1:11:36It's, it's, it's weird. Umm, and then this morning I get
- 1:11:41out for just 90 minutes easy. Umm, I think I've done like 21 K
- 1:11:45for 14 or something like that. So umm, yeah, next week will be
- 1:11:49another big week and then I've erased the phone on week and
- 1:11:52yeah, just trying to try to take them off now.
- 1:11:57Good. 100 and 119 K for the week, something like that.
- 1:12:02Glad to see Tara on the map. Yeah, rapping did.
- 1:12:07There was a few Irish followers come through as well.
- 1:12:09Must have been on the back of Mr. Mcgraw's share maybe?
- 1:12:13Your man Vlad creating the real. I think he's like got like 4K
- 1:12:16followers so he's like he's a nice bit of reach.
- 1:12:21Good stuff, good week. Another solid race.
- 1:12:24You haven't really had there in all the races that you've done
- 1:12:27since you got back Fit. Have you had, like a bad one?
- 1:12:29Really. Lots of jinx, yeah.
- 1:12:32Have I had? Yeah, I just read Provalenza.
- 1:12:34You're thrown this on. Have I had a bad one?
- 1:12:41Wouldn't I wouldn't overthink it.
- 1:12:43You did. Five mile in the park was an
- 1:12:46amazing. 10 mile, I got a really bad stitch, yeah, and bought odd
- 1:12:52and I've been pretty, pretty lucky.
- 1:12:54So fingers crossed. Well, to be honest, when we
- 1:12:58started this podcast, I had probably a few couple of bad
- 1:13:01races. So I sort of used on my bad
- 1:13:04races for the year then. But when the next January the
- 1:13:07resets, yeah, we're known as this hopefully, yeah, we keep
- 1:13:12the good luck that Roland. Sweet Dean, how have you been in
- 1:13:18the return to run? Yeah, yeah, pretty similar.
- 1:13:23So slightly more case this week or at least I think I was up to
- 1:13:28just under 70 case this week, run an hour today.
- 1:13:31So that's my longest run and felt good as if it's everything
- 1:13:36feels like mechanically it's clicking.
- 1:13:39Had an appointment with the sports doc on Friday and I think
- 1:13:45I'm suffering a little bit from a bit of an overactive like
- 1:13:49pelvic floor perineum sort of area, but apparently that's
- 1:13:53fairly common, but not not anything to get too worried
- 1:13:55about which is good. So but otherwise they're happy.
- 1:13:59I think all things going well, a couple more weeks of this return
- 1:14:03to run before I start to reintroduce some form of
- 1:14:06training. So yeah, what shoes?
- 1:14:11Did you wear for your hour run? Did you wear your Adidas evos?
- 1:14:16Yeah, SL. No, no, I've not.
- 1:14:19I've, I've I've. So they, I wore them for one of
- 1:14:24my last steady runs. So now I'm a little bit gun shy
- 1:14:27with them. OK, OK, so I come, I'm sure they
- 1:14:31have absolutely nothing to do with with it.
- 1:14:35But I've actually, I bought a pair of Zirconi shoes that are a
- 1:14:38bit lower stack, like pretty low stack.
- 1:14:40So just intentionally trying to keep like if my ankles and
- 1:14:44calves get a bit stiff and sort of that's probably a bit safer.
- 1:14:47But so I'm just running in some lower stack shoes at the minute.
- 1:14:50But but nothing, yeah, nothing's feeling too, too bad.
- 1:14:55So I think that's the most important thing every week to
- 1:14:58week things are getting better and this week in particular was
- 1:15:01definitely the best week I felt so, which is nice.
- 1:15:03So I just need to keep jogging for a couple more weeks,
- 1:15:08introduce my, you know, drills and strides.
- 1:15:10So I've started to introduce those.
- 1:15:12Those feel all right. So I just need to keep feeling
- 1:15:14good and hopefully I'll be doing some workouts in the new year,
- 1:15:18albeit that I'll probably keep my cycling, my Saturday long
- 1:15:22ride and my Thursday threshold workout in for at least a while
- 1:15:25yet is the plan. How assuming like hopefully you
- 1:15:30feel OK tomorrow on the back of this hour, how does the hour
- 1:15:33then fit into next week? Like can you do that a couple of
- 1:15:37times in the week? I don't think so.
- 1:15:41I like, I think I'll, I don't think so.
- 1:15:44I think I'll do. I think that was more like a
- 1:15:47long run. Oh gosh, I need to check what it
- 1:15:50says. I've got a bit of a plan written
- 1:15:52out for me, but my I thought perhaps where I'm trying to get
- 1:15:56to is where I can do my 240 odd minute commutes once I'm back
- 1:16:01doing those and not pulling up so then things are looking
- 1:16:03pretty good. Yeah.
- 1:16:05OK. So that was a bit of a push the
- 1:16:06boat out for a tester and hopefully it responds positively
- 1:16:11and you compound and go again. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:16:14So it was no running the day prior, tested a bit for a longer
- 1:16:19run. Make sure that that's looking
- 1:16:21pretty good. Like haven't done many more
- 1:16:24minutes than the last. I've run about the same, similar
- 1:16:28amount of minutes than the last two weeks.
- 1:16:29But I've run some longer runs in this week.
- 1:16:32Like I've not run over 30 minutes until this week, whereas
- 1:16:35I've done some, I think a 45 minute run, a 50 minute run in
- 1:16:38an hour. Yeah, good.
- 1:16:42But yeah. I'm still in the gym as well.
- 1:16:44Still in the gym. I couldn't believe it when I saw
- 1:16:47you in there. I nearly fell over.
- 1:16:50But. I don't think my muscles could
- 1:16:54believe it based on the response the next day either.
- 1:16:57Well, you're pretty sore. After the first one, but then
- 1:17:00last week's wasn't so bad. Yeah, but the first one, shit, I
- 1:17:04was like, you know, when you, I was walking like to, to and from
- 1:17:08the toilet in the office, I was like, felt like my feet went
- 1:17:12leaving the floor. I felt like I was just shuffling
- 1:17:14and like physically having to think right, pick your kneecap
- 1:17:18or as you step in because my quads were just gone.
- 1:17:21You were lifting the warm up weights for Hales as well.
- 1:17:24I thought you would have put it down.
- 1:17:29Oh. God, and how about your week?
- 1:17:31Your week was pretty quiet, hey? Yeah, pretty non eventful really
- 1:17:36you could say. Yeah, I'm trying to take the
- 1:17:40silver lining from it in that. Do you?
- 1:17:42Want to talk through talk through the event?
- 1:17:46Yeah, I'm going to preface it with some context, you know, to
- 1:17:50help stay the narrative in my direction.
- 1:17:55So you just got to think, has Ryan still got that competitive
- 1:17:58drive in him? Does he still want it?
- 1:18:01Yeah, so. Also will also take into account
- 1:18:04Ryan is possibly the worst cyclist ever so just keep that
- 1:18:08in your mind as well. So competitive.
- 1:18:11Ryan and Ryan made a bad cyclist.
- 1:18:13Put them together and you'll get this story.
- 1:18:16I'll also give you what my mom said as well because you'll
- 1:18:19probably take some humor from it.
- 1:18:22So yeah, at the end of the ride, those for those who are familiar
- 1:18:25with Perth and the Narrows Bridge, I was coming back over
- 1:18:28the Narrows Bridge in towards the city and unwritten rule, it
- 1:18:34seems over that Narrows Bridge is you just go single file.
- 1:18:37It's quite narrow irony and people are either finishing the
- 1:18:44ride off because they're heading into the city or the start in
- 1:18:47the ride. And given the make up of this
- 1:18:50little section, there's literally no need to push it.
- 1:18:53You'd be quite stupid to do so. And then as you come up onto the
- 1:18:57bridge, it kind of winds left, winds rice.
- 1:18:59And then you hit like the straight section.
- 1:19:01And as we've kind of just come on to the straight section, this
- 1:19:04guy peels off from behind me and looking sends it up the bridge
- 1:19:08as they go. I didn't realize it was going
- 1:19:11too slow for you mate. So then I followed him and then
- 1:19:16he must have sensed that I was following him.
- 1:19:18So we're now there's probably only space for 2/2 passing
- 1:19:22vehicles on this bridge. So we're probably in the, the
- 1:19:25wrong side of the road of the path here coming into oncoming
- 1:19:29traffic, which spikes the adrenaline somewhat.
- 1:19:34So then he's obviously sensed that I'm behind them.
- 1:19:36So he's continuing to push because he's like, why is this
- 1:19:39guy following me? Probably.
- 1:19:41And then I need to kind of do like the 180 left turn at the
- 1:19:45bottom to wrap back around underneath the bridge and head
- 1:19:48home. But that also means I need to
- 1:19:51slop back into the traffic that we're now on the wrong side of
- 1:19:54the path for. And then we'll come in towards
- 1:19:57the turn and I'm like, right, well, I'm now travelling
- 1:20:00downhill. I've put a bit of power into
- 1:20:02this. And I need to somehow get in
- 1:20:05line, also come to a stop so that I'm not going to send the
- 1:20:10guy behind me straight into the back of me because he's
- 1:20:12obviously travelling at some speed and then all of a sudden
- 1:20:15the corner. Is downhill off that bridge.
- 1:20:19Yeah, yeah, the you're rolling if you if you tickle the pedals
- 1:20:24a little, you're rolling and then all of a sudden the corner
- 1:20:28presents itself before I've had too much chance to do anything.
- 1:20:32So I've like flung it into the corner like proper aggressively
- 1:20:36tried to last minute panic like, well, if you lean in hard, you
- 1:20:40might just be able to like almost take it at full speed.
- 1:20:44And then as of this is all coming to me now whilst I'm
- 1:20:48thinking about it as I'm trying to lean in hard to I've realized
- 1:20:51there's no chance of making it round that it's basically 180°
- 1:20:54pivot on the spot. So I've slammed on the brakes
- 1:20:58and in slamming on the brakes, the bikes leaning into the
- 1:21:02corner and it's like just said absolutely not and flung me off
- 1:21:07towards the right. And I remember like whilst I was
- 1:21:10in the air like some reason thinking unclicked from the
- 1:21:13pedals. So I've gone one way, the bikes
- 1:21:15gone the other way. And unfortunately because it was
- 1:21:18like 7:30 in the morning, there's like 5 or 6 commuters
- 1:21:21like going the different ways around this complete
- 1:21:24intersection isn't it? With like 4 different ways to
- 1:21:27go, I'm on my back, the bikes 5 yards away from me and a few
- 1:21:32people saying are you OK? I did say and it's quite funny
- 1:21:36that the guy who I the guy who I was chasing and also the guy who
- 1:21:42had caught in front of to try and take the corner, they both
- 1:21:44just cycled off. Probably fucking idiots anyway.
- 1:21:51So I got up and put the chain back on as fast as I could
- 1:21:55because highly embarrassed and just peddled home.
- 1:21:58Got a shower locked on for work and I didn't put my T-shirt on
- 1:22:01because my arm was like bleeding.
- 1:22:03And then after an hour or so I went to put my T-shirt on and I
- 1:22:08was like oh fuck I can't even lift my arm up.
- 1:22:12Went and got it scanned at Royal Perth.
- 1:22:15It took about 2 1/2 hours and they found a fracture in the
- 1:22:19radial head which is the bone which goes from your wrist UPS
- 1:22:23your elbow. So the good, I don't know if
- 1:22:26it's a good thing it's not in. Usually you break a bone like
- 1:22:30and it snaps. That hasn't happened.
- 1:22:32It's just a fracture in the head of the bone, which on Tuesday
- 1:22:36when it happened, my range of motion was literally like about
- 1:22:4135°. That's what the doctor said.
- 1:22:45And then I was amazed by Wednesday it was a lot better.
- 1:22:48Pain hasn't been so bad at all. It's just a little bit bruised
- 1:22:52and a little bit swollen, but I pretty much got full
- 1:22:56functionality back in the arm. It's just through weight bearing
- 1:22:59where it's like quite sensitive. So I'm hoping by next week it's
- 1:23:03almost back to normal. Yeah, that's the recap.
- 1:23:07What have we learned? What have we learned from this,
- 1:23:13Ryan as well? It's like this.
- 1:23:15I told my mom and she was like, you know, I was just waiting for
- 1:23:18that to happen to you one day because you're bloody reckless,
- 1:23:21aren't you? So, but the main thing was I was
- 1:23:30like, oh, no, I'm like just getting to the point where I'm
- 1:23:33starting to physically be able to run again.
- 1:23:36Like I can run a kilometer in a row now I'm not going to be able
- 1:23:40to run, nor am I going to be able to cycle.
- 1:23:42So I'm, I'm going to take a backward step with my running
- 1:23:45and I'm also going to become unfair like massively.
- 1:23:48But the next day I was able to do my return to run program just
- 1:23:52through like the they say because it's in the elbow,
- 1:23:56you're not supposed to sling it. So if you lock it in a sling
- 1:24:00like that, because in your elbow, the joint just like kind
- 1:24:02of fixes on itself, it needs to be free.
- 1:24:07So I was able to run, I've been able to cross train, not cycle.
- 1:24:12So it hasn't been a great week in terms of training, but I've
- 1:24:14got by and I'm up to 6 minutes in the run.
- 1:24:17So things are looking up in some senses and looking down in
- 1:24:22others. And how's that, How's the
- 1:24:24feeling when you're doing your 6 minutes?
- 1:24:26Is it feel like it's progressing?
- 1:24:30Starting to feel like I'm actually running again, which is
- 1:24:32nice rather than the heart rate going to 1/4 see within 30
- 1:24:37seconds. Not that any of this is about
- 1:24:39fitness, but you know, it's, it's a bit more enjoyable now
- 1:24:43and you, you get to run for longer, which makes you feel
- 1:24:47like you're actually running rather than like stupid one or
- 1:24:50two minutes just feels like you're not even running.
- 1:24:55And I was saying to Steve and RAF yesterday mentally, I've
- 1:24:59noticed that I've turned the corner because I'm now starting
- 1:25:02to like think about, oh, can I do 8 minutes instead of 6?
- 1:25:06Or can I reduce the rest time? Obviously I'm not and I'm it's a
- 1:25:12good thing that I'm aware that I'm starting to think like this
- 1:25:14because it means I can self regulate it.
- 1:25:17But it's also a sign to show that I've got a bit of
- 1:25:20confidence in my body back because prior I was when I first
- 1:25:26went out I was petrified because I was scared for a bad response.
- 1:25:29Whereas now I'm confident and hopeful it'll be a good response
- 1:25:32and I just want more and more. Yeah, can completely relate to
- 1:25:36that. Spend a lot of time because you
- 1:25:39know, the whole point is just reload.
- 1:25:41It's not to develop aerobic fitness, but but you're so
- 1:25:45paranoid about the discomfort you're in and your your mind
- 1:25:48tends to rather than celebrate the fact that you get to do
- 1:25:51something, spends most of the time fixated on that rather than
- 1:25:55the excitement of actually being able to exercise.
- 1:25:57I think today was the first time I actually felt like my
- 1:26:00cardiovascular fitness was the limiter on my run, not my body,
- 1:26:04which is which is a nice feeling.
- 1:26:05It's fun when it's feels like it's not just you just thinking
- 1:26:09about mechanical issue rather than actually just being a bit
- 1:26:14puffed. Yeah, hopefully we both turned a
- 1:26:18bit of a corner a few weeks behind you.
- 1:26:21But yeah, one thing I did think about was it's no wonder that
- 1:26:27people fail on like their return to run or like when you get
- 1:26:32injured and then try and come back, it's no wonder people get
- 1:26:35reinjured so often when they're not following a strict protocol
- 1:26:39like this. Like how long is it taking you
- 1:26:41to return to running an hour? It's taken me about four weeks
- 1:26:46to run 6 minutes in a row. And that's because you're using
- 1:26:49like safe and proper measures. Whereas if you didn't have like
- 1:26:53the support in place from a physio or someone to guide you
- 1:26:56properly because you've run 150 KS in a week, you think I'll
- 1:27:01just go off tomorrow and try and run for 45 minutes, see how it
- 1:27:04feels. But you need to do so many
- 1:27:08things before you get to that point to kind of protect
- 1:27:11yourself from taking a massive backward step.
- 1:27:15Yeah, and it's also nuanced, like it's all very difficult to
- 1:27:18know exactly what, what's the right amount of discomfort?
- 1:27:23What is the right type of discomfort?
- 1:27:25What's what, what, what are we trying to achieve by each run?
- 1:27:30What should we be focusing on in between runs?
- 1:27:32Like there's so much, it's not that simple.
- 1:27:35So ABS absent the ability to get gained insight over all
- 1:27:40different parts and things like that, it's just really
- 1:27:42difficult. And another thing, it's a lot
- 1:27:46easier to lie to yourself than it is to lie to a physio or
- 1:27:51someone. So for example, with the pain
- 1:27:53scores, you can say you're allowed one or two out of 10,
- 1:27:57but ideally like one or none. That's all going off.
- 1:28:00In Portugal, judging by the stream, you can come in in a
- 1:28:05minute. If you're allowed like a one out
- 1:28:08of 10 score, you're easy. If that's real, realistically 3
- 1:28:13out of 10 when it happens, it's so easy for you to convince
- 1:28:16yourself that was only one out of 10.
- 1:28:18Like it didn't really hurt that bad like this and that.
- 1:28:21Whereas if you have to go and sit down and explain to someone
- 1:28:24what happened and how it felt, you know in your own head if you
- 1:28:28kind of like lying or justifying.
- 1:28:32Whereas if it's just you're justifying to yourself, you can
- 1:28:36almost just park it and be like, no, that was fine.
- 1:28:38It was it was only this and move on.
- 1:28:41Yeah, I suppose 2 good pieces of feedback I have is Steve does
- 1:28:46these functional tests to make to see where things are AT.
- 1:28:49And this is this week those tests responded the best I've
- 1:28:53had so far. So that was like a more
- 1:28:55objective marker and then the scanning the imaging like I'm
- 1:28:59booked in for another scan. So you can if you, if you trick
- 1:29:03yourself all you want, but if the scan doesn't show positive
- 1:29:06improvement, all these like strict functional assessments
- 1:29:09where you put in the joint or joint under stress and it's not
- 1:29:13responding positively like then you're not going to, you're not
- 1:29:16taking it forward. So when you've got the scan this
- 1:29:21week. No I won't be till end of Jan
- 1:29:24the next. Oh yeah.
- 1:29:26And that's hopefully to like kind of underline everything by
- 1:29:29that point, give you like a full confidence boost.
- 1:29:32Yeah, I think, the sports doc said.
- 1:29:33In the nicest possible way. I hope I don't see your gift.
- 1:29:37Is she's like, if you keep fucking taking my bloody MRI
- 1:29:41referrals, I'm going to kill you.
- 1:29:43I know how, which I appreciate. It's nice when they don't cost
- 1:29:47cost a cent. Do you get them entirely free?
- 1:29:51Yeah, on as a British national, I get 80% back.
- 1:29:56Yeah, not entirely free, which is handy.
- 1:29:59Because they're what, like 400 odd dollars otherwise?
- 1:30:01Epson Yeah. Right.
- 1:30:06Portugal correspondent what's happening?
- 1:30:09Owen muted guys that senior men's race was unbelievable and
- 1:30:16so it wasn't a 2 horse race really from like a long way and
- 1:30:21Grezier and this Thierry none did none did a Cam Mayo.
- 1:30:30He's a Spanish guy, but them two were just like going head to
- 1:30:33head the hallway and I told Greg that you'd back.
- 1:30:39Well, this cherry I'm after looking off on World Athletics.
- 1:30:42So Ninder Kameo, he's run a 5K on the track, 12475K on the
- 1:30:48road, 13 O 8, which is a Spanish national record.
- 1:30:51He's run 10K2750. He's pretty legit, but he yeah,
- 1:30:58Sprint finish. It's really technical at the
- 1:31:00end. There's a a big a left hand
- 1:31:02turn. So basically if you've got the
- 1:31:04inside line, you're pretty set on winning and then it's just
- 1:31:08like 100 meters last 50 meters and yeah, your man the Spanish
- 1:31:12guy in then to cut him away. Oh, he back resi.
- 1:31:17And then for third it was Scott B and another guy and I think
- 1:31:22Scott B, he might have gotten him on the line.
- 1:31:24It was a lunge. He'd literally jumped for A and
- 1:31:27after going on a freaking break and top performance from
- 1:31:31Ireland, I think Jack O'Leary got fifth.
- 1:31:33I think Ireland got a second in the team, which is just this a
- 1:31:37testament to how deep. Irish nationals were.
- 1:31:41Blood like in the so on the 20 trees one team.
- 1:31:44Oh and the lads came second like Nick Griggs won the It's just
- 1:31:50ridiculous how deep Irish male running is at the moment And but
- 1:31:56I'm not sure. I really hope Scott BE got got
- 1:32:01third, that'd be unbelievable. I think Rory Lander was a bit
- 1:32:03back and I don't know where I can get the live results.
- 1:32:08Shit. Well, on the on the men's list,
- 1:32:11there was a few big names as well.
- 1:32:13There was a Chip and Ellie, that is the Italian guy, that Dominic
- 1:32:17La Barlow and Jonas race. I think they're both Swiss
- 1:32:21athletes. Yeah, some like serious guys.
- 1:32:25But Labalu doesn't go well over in the grass across country.
- 1:32:29He's yet to like really, really. He can't run out the park.
- 1:32:34But yeah, no, it was like, obviously yak big Britain's not
- 1:32:37there, who is just the headliner and he totally changes the way
- 1:32:41the race is even run. So no, it was really, really
- 1:32:47good. I'm just trying to see if Scott
- 1:32:51Beatty got it. So what Team GB have featured?
- 1:32:55They get a bronze now. It would be.
- 1:32:58I don't know. I really don't know.
- 1:33:02This is how live the coverage is.
- 1:33:04The results are still coming in. Guys.
- 1:33:07Our correspondent would have been doing his job.
- 1:33:13No, it's like incredibly hard to track how A-Team score comes
- 1:33:17through. Yeah, especially like they just
- 1:33:22keep on filtering. On when you're on X when you
- 1:33:25search, I'll just search Gracias names and then we like featuring
- 1:33:28the results. It says third Labarlu for Scott
- 1:33:31BC, but they've both got 2223 as their times.
- 1:33:35There was literally also Labarlu.
- 1:33:37Who's with him? Think so, yeah.
- 1:33:39As pair there, sure. It doesn't say any of the team's
- 1:33:42results. France got third.
- 1:33:47France third. Yeah, so Spain first, Ireland
- 1:33:51second, France third. Jack O'Leary was fifth, Brian
- 1:33:56Faye 10th, Cormac Dalton 11th for Ireland, like 5th, 10th and
- 1:34:0111th. That's.
- 1:34:02Yeah, she was. Yeah.
- 1:34:04Jack O'Leary came from really deep as well.
- 1:34:06Jenny Mac. Yeah.
- 1:34:10Will that is your team for worlds already set or was it?
- 1:34:15How's that work? I don't know how it how they
- 1:34:18pick the world and now if they come second in Europe, in Europe
- 1:34:22you have to send them to to world, even though it's I think
- 1:34:26it's very expensive to send a team to world cross country.
- 1:34:30But still I think you have to give credit to the athlete and
- 1:34:33send them. And Ireland have, yeah, just the
- 1:34:37fact that they only sent 5 to this when you can send a team to
- 1:34:41six makes it look that Irelander aren't, I don't know, sending
- 1:34:48full teams. So you never know.
- 1:34:49Flush. Hey, jeez.
- 1:34:53Oh well, that's exciting. I look forward to watching that
- 1:34:55back. Gracie like to bounce back from
- 1:35:00his gold medal in the 10K at Worlds and he's back doing his
- 1:35:05business. I know you said about a double
- 1:35:08trouble earlier. I've got 1 penciled in here, so
- 1:35:11we might as well get it done and then that could be us.
- 1:35:14Unless you guys have anything else you want to share before we
- 1:35:17bring the show home. Well, usually I forget to plug
- 1:35:23the ah, sorry, I've just got a twinge in my back.
- 1:35:27Usually forget to ask for a rating until it's like the last
- 1:35:30thing we say, which people have probably turned off by then.
- 1:35:32So if you're still tuned in now, we got a really nice review come
- 1:35:37through on the Apple platform, do the day.
- 1:35:40So yeah, we do see them and apparently they help us.
- 1:35:44So if you're still listening, just flickers 5 stars.
- 1:35:48That's if you enjoy what we speak about and what we say.
- 1:35:50Hopefully you do. We give you a couple of hours of
- 1:35:53our week each week to talk running and share it with you,
- 1:35:56so it would be much appreciated. Now the double trouble is we've
- 1:36:01got a group chat between the three of us and we were speaking
- 1:36:03about this earlier in the week. I couldn't.
- 1:36:06I should preface this with I think the value of a coach is
- 1:36:09genuinely invaluable. Like since having one, I don't
- 1:36:15think I must never say never, but hopefully I'll never be self
- 1:36:19coached because I feel like you always need someone there to
- 1:36:23guide you and help you make decisions because you can kind
- 1:36:26of like blind yourself and trick yourself into thinking one
- 1:36:29thing's right. But the coach, besides all their
- 1:36:32knowledge and expertise and training, they help provide that
- 1:36:36objective view. And now this double trouble
- 1:36:39comes at coaches who are mainly in the online format and through
- 1:36:46like they have big Instagram followings with bloody blue sex.
- 1:36:51You kind of can probably build the picture of what I'm trying
- 1:36:54to paint because I stumbled across this guy.
- 1:36:56I went and share his ass because that's a bit too far during the
- 1:37:00week. And he seemed to do a few
- 1:37:04triathlons here and there, do a couple of marathons here and
- 1:37:07there, but kind of like a a semi serious participant in endurance
- 1:37:11sport, shall we say. And he was kind of preaching
- 1:37:15that he was like an online coach in these disciplines and he
- 1:37:18clicked into his page. And again, I think the value of
- 1:37:23a coach is invaluable and whatever your coach may charge
- 1:37:27is hopefully very appropriate. But this guy is charging £70 per
- 1:37:33week, which is £280 a month. In dollars, that's over $500 a
- 1:37:39month. And now that that just seems
- 1:37:43obscene, especially given he is pitching towards clientele who
- 1:37:49are maybe on the entry level or just kind of participating in
- 1:37:55the sport rather than seeking to perform at like a high level and
- 1:37:59stretch every possible thing that they can stretch and find
- 1:38:03those extra percentages that they haven't been able to find
- 1:38:06over years of trying. It just seems like he's kind of
- 1:38:10extorting and taking advantage of people's like, passion to get
- 1:38:15involved in things. And maybe he's very aware that
- 1:38:19he has a decent Instagram profile with a decent following.
- 1:38:22It looks good when you go on. He's got all the photos and he's
- 1:38:26just, yeah, he's taking a few people for a ride there.
- 1:38:29So wasn't too happy with that. And I don't know if that's kind
- 1:38:33of like a mid ground price for coaches.
- 1:38:38Like, I don't know if other people are charging similar
- 1:38:40amounts, but if they are, I would be amazed.
- 1:38:43I feel like this guy's a bit of an outlier, yeah.
- 1:38:47So if he's got a big clientele as well, he's obviously making a
- 1:38:51shit ton of money. And I would imagine they all get
- 1:38:56a very similar program because he's just got them on the
- 1:39:00conveyor belt one end, print and send to them and then on to the
- 1:39:05next. And like a lot of them boys are
- 1:39:09just putting their like they're just getting generic programs
- 1:39:11off ChatGPT and charging extortionate prices like that's
- 1:39:17the same. So same with that runner app.
- 1:39:20Like it's all AI generated. So fair enough.
- 1:39:24It will get you to a certain level.
- 1:39:26But if you want to actually really do well in the sport,
- 1:39:30you're going to need more specific training does tailor to
- 1:39:33you. So like any idiot can tell you
- 1:39:37to run three days a week, do a session, you're going to get
- 1:39:40fitter if you keep it up. If you're starting from nothing,
- 1:39:43you do that, you're going to get fitter no matter what.
- 1:39:45And that's what Ron is basically doing.
- 1:39:48So I think I remember the Inside Running podcast, Brady got a
- 1:39:53subscription for like a couple of times a couple of weeks and
- 1:39:55he's wanted to run like a 216 marathon or something.
- 1:39:58And I was telling to run like 70 KA week or something like stupid
- 1:40:03because it's just not tailored for like that level.
- 1:40:08If you get me now 216 is an incredible, but umm, yeah, I
- 1:40:12feel like for the average runner, it will get you by.
- 1:40:16But if you want to actually do really, really well, umm, or
- 1:40:20just improve more, umm, yeah, you're certainly going to need a
- 1:40:24tailored. And program by a person who
- 1:40:27knows what they're talking about.
- 1:40:30Yeah, Runner is 1 bridge. I won't mind you burning because
- 1:40:35I don't think we'd kind of align to those sort of copy and paste
- 1:40:40like program, 10K program, 5K program.
- 1:40:43Like that's not how it works, is it?
- 1:40:45The sad thing is they're obviously Runner and this coach,
- 1:40:49they kind of aim towards those people who are new to training,
- 1:40:53so they don't actually know can. They may not know what training
- 1:40:57looks like or how it should look like.
- 1:40:59So when they receive it from whichever source it is, it's
- 1:41:03going to be good regardless because it's structured week.
- 1:41:06You do different types of runs, but it's not structured to that
- 1:41:10given person. And yeah, unfortunately, there's
- 1:41:15plenty of people out there making a shit ton of money from
- 1:41:18probably doing not too much runner included.
- 1:41:22And when you see this could be offending some listeners here,
- 1:41:27but I don't reckon we might have too many in this post.
- 1:41:30But when you see at Runner in someone's bio on Instagram, it's
- 1:41:34a bit of a red flag for me. There's a full blown red flag,
- 1:41:37but it's ground to a certain level like runner, like I.
- 1:41:42It's a waste of money, but it's grand to a certain level if
- 1:41:43that's what you spend your money on.
- 1:41:45Yeah, it's like a it's a couch to 5K type thing, isn't it?
- 1:41:49Yeah, it has like. You don't need runner.
- 1:41:52You don't even be paying money to runner to get what's telling
- 1:41:56you. You can literally put into
- 1:41:57charge, put whatever you want into ChatGPT and I'll spit you
- 1:42:00out the exact same what runners doing for free.
- 1:42:03So yeah, I actually do not know how runner is still actually
- 1:42:08like a thing. Because it went through the
- 1:42:11bloody merger with Strava and now the bloody printing.
- 1:42:16Yeah, but it's it gets people into running which is which is 1
- 1:42:21good thing like some people are using it.
- 1:42:25I guess it's a good starting point.
- 1:42:26It helps you kind of learn the the day-to-day in the process
- 1:42:31what how weeks might be set up and stuff.
- 1:42:33But if you're looking to get the best out of yourself, maybe not
- 1:42:39Dean. We need you to stop sitting on
- 1:42:41the fence and Give your opinion on this one.
- 1:42:44It goes on me. Yeah.
- 1:42:49Is it Kaizen? Is that another app which I'm
- 1:42:52not super familiar with, but I understand it's actually much
- 1:42:55more. There's a lot more data, I
- 1:42:57think. Is that the one that's got a bit
- 1:43:00more guts to it? Is that where it like consumes
- 1:43:03your training and maybe algorithms help make predictions
- 1:43:07or something? Yeah, I feel like maybe that's
- 1:43:09got a bit more substance to it, but but yeah, I think paying
- 1:43:14overs for a coach and the coach maybe not being that, well
- 1:43:17credentialed is, yeah, I agree with you, Ryan.
- 1:43:20It's not a good thing to be doing.
- 1:43:21And that's hard. Like as these like things
- 1:43:24emerge, like 1520 years ago, I don't think there was much by
- 1:43:28way of formal running groups and running programs.
- 1:43:31Like it wasn't as much a thing. It was all pretty amateurish.
- 1:43:34People would join a coach and you'd often wouldn't even pay
- 1:43:37them. They would just volunteer some
- 1:43:38time. You'd run in a group and then
- 1:43:40you'd sort of self direct what you did and you learned what to
- 1:43:43do based on magazines and talking to people on long runs.
- 1:43:46So their whole industry has evolved a lot.
- 1:43:48But as it has, it's not really all that well regulated.
- 1:43:52And as a result, you can have these people come in and claim
- 1:43:55that they're amazing and should pay him a lot of money.
- 1:43:58But yeah, buy beware. It's probably not the best way
- 1:44:02to spend your spend your biggies.
- 1:44:05I remember when I was first getting into it thinking I feel
- 1:44:09like a right plan pass getting a coach, like I'm not good enough
- 1:44:12to have a coach. But it's how how quickly has the
- 1:44:15that like mindset or landscape changed now?
- 1:44:18Like if you don't have a coach, just like, Oh well, do you not
- 1:44:21want to get better? It's the second time this week
- 1:44:25I've heard you use the term plant pot.
- 1:44:27Let's go on. What else do they use it for?
- 1:44:30Must describe it myself. Describing yourself a better
- 1:44:33just when you met voice memo how you fell off your bike.
- 1:44:40It's a PC term to describe, but yeah.
- 1:44:44Guys got Scott, BE got fourth. Unfortunately your man Labalo
- 1:44:49got third after me saying he bronze medal.
- 1:44:53He got baited, yeah. He got beat.
- 1:44:57Yeah, nice. Thanks very much for wait.
- 1:45:01That's me from Portugal, guys. I'm going to get back inside.
- 1:45:05The sun's burning down on me. So yeah, only got in.
- 1:45:10Oh yeah, safe flight home. Thanks guys.
- 1:45:12Yeah. All right.
- 1:45:15Thanks for joining us for another week.
- 1:45:17We'll be back next week to do it all over again.
- 1:45:20See you guys. See you mate.
- 1:45:22See you guys.
