- 0:02You're listening to Beyond the Sermon, the podcast of First
- 0:05Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ.
- 0:07On our podcast, the goal is not just to share the sermons we've
- 0:11preached, but to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're
- 0:14learning and what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:17You can find more information about our church at
- 0:20fumccollingswood.org. Thanks for listening.
- 0:26This morning scripture comes from Romans chapter 8 starting
- 0:29in verse one. Therefore there is now no
- 0:32condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through
- 0:35Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set
- 0:38you free from the law of sin and death.
- 0:41For what the law has powerless to do.
- 0:43What the Law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the
- 0:46flesh, God did, by sending His own Son into the likeness of
- 0:50sinful flesh to be a sin offering.
- 0:53And so He condemns sin in the flesh, in order that the
- 0:56righteous requirement of the Law might be fully met in US who do
- 1:01not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
- 1:05Those who live according to the flesh have their mind set on
- 1:07what the flesh desires, but those who live in accordance
- 1:10with the Spirit have their mind set on what the Spirit desires.
- 1:14The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed
- 1:17by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh
- 1:21is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law,
- 1:25nor can it do so. Those who do not, who are in the
- 1:28realm of the flesh, cannot please God.
- 1:31You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh, but are in
- 1:33the realm of the Spirit. If indeed the Spirit of God
- 1:37lives in the If indeed the Spirit of God lives in you, If
- 1:40anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to
- 1:43Christ. But if Christ is in you, then
- 1:46even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the
- 1:51Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
- 1:53And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is
- 1:56living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also
- 1:59give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives
- 2:02in you. Therefore, brothers and sisters,
- 2:05we have an obligation. But it's not to the flesh to
- 2:09live according to it to it. For if you live according to the
- 2:12flesh, you will die. But if by the Spirit you are put
- 2:15to death, the misdeeds of the body you will live.
- 2:19For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children
- 2:22of God. The Spirit you receive does not
- 2:24make you slaves, so that you live in fear again.
- 2:28Rather the Spirit you received brought by your adoption to the
- 2:31sonship, and by him we cry, ABBA, Father, The Spirit Himself
- 2:36testifies with their spirit that we are God's children.
- 2:40Now if we are children, then we are heirs, heirs of God and Co
- 2:43heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in His sufferings in order
- 2:47that we may also share in His glory.
- 2:49This is the Word of God for the people of God.
- 2:52Thanks be to God. Amen.
- 2:54Thanks, Elizabeth. Have you ever seen one of those
- 2:58Magic Eye pictures? You know the ones I'm talking
- 3:02about, the ones where the image looks like a bunch of dots or
- 3:06shapes, but if you stare at it long enough or you kind of cross
- 3:10your eyes a little bit, another image appears.
- 3:14But this one's in 3D. You know what I'm talking about.
- 3:18Yeah. OK.
- 3:18All right. Or, or maybe if you're not
- 3:21familiar with those, maybe you've gone to a movie theatre
- 3:24before and the feature film you were going to see came with a
- 3:27pair of those red and blue glasses, right?
- 3:32Which also enable you to see some of the elements of the film
- 3:36in 3D, even though the, the film, the the movie is being
- 3:40projected on a flat screen, Right?
- 3:44Both of these technologies use multiple images which are kind
- 3:48of offset from each other a little bit, but they also at the
- 3:52same time as they're offset, they overlap each other.
- 3:55And when they overlap in the right way, they create a richer,
- 3:59fuller, deeper image. A2 dimensional image on a page
- 4:05or a screen becomes 3 dimensional.
- 4:08It's got depth and life and all those things.
- 4:10This morning, I want to present some of the lenses that we've
- 4:16been using to look at our lives as Christians in this Empowered
- 4:21sermon series. And I want to help us combine
- 4:23those lenses so that they can help us see the fuller picture
- 4:29right, of of the kind of life that God has called us to and
- 4:33wants to empower us for. Because I believe that this is
- 4:37the life God wants for us both as individuals, but also as a
- 4:42church together. You're ready.
- 4:47All right, Maybe we need to sing another song.
- 4:49Are you ready? OK, pull out your note sheets if
- 4:53you're taking notes. We've been talking in this
- 4:56series specifically about spiritual gifts, right?
- 5:00This is the first lens that we're going to look through this
- 5:03more. I said a few weeks ago that
- 5:05spiritual gifts are distinct abilities empowered by the Holy
- 5:11Spirit and distributed by God's grace to every believer that
- 5:16they might faithfully and effectively strengthen the
- 5:18church, serve others, and advance God's purposes.
- 5:23It's kind of our definition for spiritual gifts.
- 5:26And in contrast to kind of our natural abilities, we're not
- 5:31born with these spiritual gifts, right?
- 5:34They're given to us when we become Christians, when we
- 5:39decide to commit our lives to following the way of Jesus and
- 5:41we confess the sin in our lives and we turn away from it and,
- 5:46and Christ comes in and, and restores us and fills us.
- 5:50That's when the Holy Spirit gives us one or two or or maybe
- 5:55even several spiritual gifts. Now, that doesn't mean just
- 5:59because that's when we receive them, that's when they're kind
- 6:02of apportioned out to us. That doesn't mean we always
- 6:05recognize them as spiritual gifts in our own lives or or
- 6:11that we understand the fullness of what it means to exercise
- 6:15those gifts. There's still a growing process
- 6:20that comes with learning to exercise and operate in those
- 6:25spiritual gifts, even though they're also distinct from our
- 6:30humanly acquired skills, right? The kind of skills we learn,
- 6:33like if you ever learned in school to do algebra or long
- 6:39division, right? Not fun stuff, but you learn how
- 6:42to do it. You didn't know how to do it.
- 6:44You go through a process, you learn how to do it, then you
- 6:47forget it. The, the, the things we learn
- 6:51how to do those natural gifts. There's growth in our spiritual
- 6:55gifts, but it's not quite the same.
- 6:58Now, just because our natural abilities and acquired skills
- 7:03are not spiritual gifts, that doesn't mean that God can't or
- 7:08doesn't use them in different ways or that they don't
- 7:12sometimes work in tandem with our spiritual gifts that God's
- 7:16given. It just means that they're not
- 7:17in the same category, right? They these natural abilities and
- 7:22acquired skills, they don't have the same guarantee of Holy
- 7:26Spirit empowerment for building up the body of Christ, but God
- 7:32still uses them to help. You see what I mean?
- 7:35Let me give you a peek at what I would call my gift
- 7:39constellation. You know, constellation has
- 7:41stars. They all come together.
- 7:43People see things in the stars. I don't see things in the stars.
- 7:46Anyway, here's my gift constellation.
- 7:48Hopefully it helps you envision how these things interact with
- 7:53each other. It's it's definitely a work in
- 7:54progress, but it's what I've learned as I've walked with
- 7:58Jesus. You can see spiritual gifts are
- 8:00up there. They're the kind of the green,
- 8:01the darker circles. Natural abilities are in white
- 8:06squares and rectangles, and acquired skills are in orange
- 8:11triangles. You see kind of the way they all
- 8:13come together. You can see in there that that
- 8:16teaching and leadership are some of my primary gifts that God has
- 8:21given me. But some other things that could
- 8:23show up on a gifts assessment, things like shepherding and
- 8:27administration, there are things that God has revealed aren't
- 8:32areas of spiritual gifting for me.
- 8:36Similarly, even though I believe teaching is one of my spiritual
- 8:41gifts, preaching as a mode of communication, that's something
- 8:45I've had to learn and work on. And when I came here five years
- 8:50ago, my sermons back then sound a little different than they do
- 8:54today, right? So there's been growth.
- 8:57It's a skill I've had to work on.
- 9:00So that image up there that's either helpful to you or you're
- 9:03even more confused right now and we're just going to move on.
- 9:07But spiritual gifts, first lens we're looking at.
- 9:10The second lens that we've been talking about that we need to
- 9:15consider are the spiritual disciplines or spiritual
- 9:18practices. And spiritual disciplines are
- 9:21those practices that God has given us as the normal means
- 9:27through which we encounter God, right?
- 9:29This is these are the pathways that God has enabled for us to
- 9:32to meet him. These spiritual practices like
- 9:37community, engaging, scripture, fasting, witnessing, these
- 9:44spiritual practices are all for every believer, right?
- 9:50All for every believer. With the gifts, there are some
- 9:53for each Christian. But with the practices, they're
- 9:56all for every Christian. That doesn't mean that all of
- 10:01the disciplines are going to feel equally powerful in
- 10:04different people's lives. Some practices are going to feel
- 10:07like you're swimming downstream, floating in the lazy river.
- 10:11Everything's good, it just comes and it's good.
- 10:15Others. Others will make you feel like
- 10:18you're swimming upstream against the current, maybe even up a
- 10:24waterfall, Right? You have to work a little
- 10:26harder. For me, I love engaging
- 10:30scripture. I love to read it, I love to
- 10:33study it. I love reading about it.
- 10:36I love watching other people teach on it.
- 10:38All these, it's a downhill practice for me.
- 10:41It comes easy. Fasting, not so much.
- 10:47I don't like it. I like to eat, but it's still
- 10:54something I I, I very much have to choose to do when I fast.
- 10:58But I do it and God meets me in it.
- 11:03But it's one of those upstream practices.
- 11:06It takes more effort and intention for me.
- 11:10We've been talking about spiritual disciplines a good bit
- 11:14over the past years. I think it was maybe my, my
- 11:17first Lent series. We did a series called This is
- 11:21the Way and we looked at different spiritual practices
- 11:26and we've been doing that because I've, I've felt that God
- 11:29was leading us there, but there was something he wanted to do in
- 11:33there. But it wasn't until I was
- 11:35introduced to the idea that we see both spiritual disciplines
- 11:40and spiritual gifts modelled in the life of Jesus that the light
- 11:46bulb kind of came on for me, right?
- 11:49The Jesus was our model. Jesus encountered the Father in
- 11:53the spiritual disciplines, and that's where he developed the
- 11:57intimacy he had with the Father. It's where he got his marching
- 12:01orders about when to go on to the next town, when to go to the
- 12:05next village, when to call out that guy climbing in the tree as
- 12:10he was passing by. And then Jesus was empowered to
- 12:16minister, to do the ministry he was called to do through his
- 12:20gifts by the Spirit, through those spiritual gifts that God
- 12:24gave him. He was empowered by the Spirit
- 12:26to do that, his teaching, his miracles, his healings, all
- 12:30those things, the spiritual, spiritual gifts, spiritual
- 12:35practices. But then there's another lens
- 12:39that filters what it means to follow Jesus and, and it's what
- 12:43we know as the fruit of the Spirit, right?
- 12:47This is how Paul talks in Galatians 5 about the character
- 12:51of Jesus which is formed in US in Galatians 5 and Paul says but
- 12:59the fruit of the Spirit is Lovejoy, peace, forbearance or
- 13:05patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and
- 13:10self-control. Against such thing there are
- 13:13there is no law right? This is what the character we
- 13:18see in Jesus and the character that God wants to form in US.
- 13:21Love, like we spoke about last week, at the very center of it
- 13:28all, but also things like joy and peace and and then the other
- 13:33fruit that make up the character we see in Jesus.
- 13:37And this is important because our character is key.
- 13:42It's key because God wants to form us into people to whom he
- 13:47can entrust his presence and his power.
- 13:52He wants us to bear his name in the world as his witness to to
- 13:58reflect his character and his heart to the world around us, to
- 14:03represent him well. And that formation happens
- 14:08primarily as we encounter God through those spiritual
- 14:13practices, right? It's about staying connected to
- 14:18the source, not just the source of the power.
- 14:21We like talking about the source of the power, but it's the very
- 14:24source of our life. His life in us.
- 14:30His character formed in us so we can be like in the world.
- 14:39And so this morning I want to add one more lens to this filter
- 14:45that we haven't spoken about in this series.
- 14:49And, and I'm going to call this lens Moves of the Spirit.
- 14:55Pastor Scott, what is a move of the Spirit?
- 14:59Well, moves of the Spirit refer to those times when God
- 15:02sovereignly chooses to draw near to his people and manifest his
- 15:07presence among them, right? When God chooses, because he
- 15:13wants to, to draw near in a special way, he's always present
- 15:18everywhere, right? But there are times he draws
- 15:20near in a special way and he makes his presence known.
- 15:26These these experiences have been spoken of at different
- 15:29points in history and in different circles, as as
- 15:32revivals or as outpourings as we heard about at Asbury University
- 15:39a few years ago, as awakenings or renewals.
- 15:44No matter what kind of a title you want to to slap onto those
- 15:50moves of the Spirit, they are, in the words of Jonathan
- 15:55Edwards, the acceleration of the normal work of God in the church
- 16:04and in the conversion of sinners.
- 16:07The acceleration of the normal work of God in the church and in
- 16:13the conversion of sinners for reasons known only to him.
- 16:18There are times God comes and does in a limited amount of time
- 16:23what would normally take a much longer period of time.
- 16:28Right? But it's not that God is is
- 16:30doing something different. He's still choosing to do the
- 16:34same things. It's just condensed in time.
- 16:37The the effects are speed up because of God's presence.
- 16:41Now there's nothing we can do to make the Spirit move in these
- 16:47ways. All right?
- 16:48We can't pray hard enough. We can't have enough faith.
- 16:51We can't live such good life. We can't do anything.
- 16:58It's a choice of God to do it. But but we can remove the
- 17:04impediment, right? That would stand in the way of
- 17:08God moving in this way. And we can be open and watchful
- 17:13for when God chooses to move in those ways so that we can be
- 17:16ready to cooperate with him. Moves with the Spirit.
- 17:24These four lenses, they all come together to reveal an image
- 17:30which I would term the empowered life.
- 17:35The empowered life. This is how I think about the
- 17:38Christian life as as we've been speaking about it, living like
- 17:42Jesus, surrendered to the Father and empowered by the Spirit.
- 17:47This is the overlap between exercising our spiritual gifts,
- 17:52practicing the spiritual disciplines, the fruit of the
- 17:55Spirit being formed in US, and being open to these moves of the
- 18:01Spirit. I think this is where God wants
- 18:04us to live. This is the kind of life that
- 18:08Paul described in the passage we read this morning from Romans 8.
- 18:13And now Paul doesn't use the term empowered life in his
- 18:20passage there in Romans 8 to describe the kind of life that
- 18:24we were meant to live. But he does describe the kind of
- 18:27life we're meant to live. And he describes the means by
- 18:31which we can live that life, because Paul believes that this
- 18:37kind of life is not only possible, but it should be the
- 18:41expectation for those who follow Jesus.
- 18:46And so in Romans 8, Paul draws this this sharp distinction
- 18:51between life in the flesh on one hand and life in the Spirit on
- 18:56the other hand. In Paul's mind, these are not
- 19:00concurrent realities that exist within a Christian and kind of
- 19:04fight back and forth to see who's going to win.
- 19:07Rather, life in the flesh and life in the Spirit, for Paul,
- 19:13are mutually exclusive realities.
- 19:16We're either living from one or we're living from the other.
- 19:21This isn't a description of what happens when we die and our
- 19:25bodies are finally separated from our spirits.
- 19:28Paul isn't talking about physical realities when he's
- 19:32talking about the flesh. He's talking about the source of
- 19:35our life, Right. Either we've been we're being
- 19:39ruled by our fallen sinful self, or we're being ruled by God's
- 19:45Spirit. And because God took on human
- 19:50flesh in the person of Jesus and in his life, death, resurrection
- 19:55and ascension, he defeated the power of sin.
- 19:58We no longer have to live in bondage to that old system of
- 20:03sin and death. Jesus fulfilled the requirements
- 20:08of the law, and we're now free to live by the Spirit of God.
- 20:14That means. That means that our our minds
- 20:19can be renewed, all right. Paul says that there in Romans
- 20:228, we can learn to set our minds on what the spirit desires, not
- 20:27just what we want to set our minds on what the spirit
- 20:32desires. That's part of what happens when
- 20:33we participate in the spiritual practices, right?
- 20:36As we read Scripture, for instance, we learn about the
- 20:41things that God cares for. As we pray, the Spirit speaks to
- 20:46us about what He wants for us and from us.
- 20:51As we serve. We learn the self giving
- 20:55orientation of love and and on and on through all the
- 20:59disciplines. Paul says it's this idea of
- 21:03living in the Spirit and the Spirit living in us that makes
- 21:09all the difference. This is the evidence that we
- 21:14belong to Jesus when people see the Spirit living in US.
- 21:22And then we get to to Romans 811, which is one of those
- 21:27verses that just blows my mind by, you know, like I said a
- 21:32couple weeks ago about Ephesians 317 ish.
- 21:37This is one of those passages. This is one of those verses that
- 21:42I think helps us understand what God wants for us.
- 21:49In Romans 811, Paul says, And if the Spirit of him who raised
- 21:55Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from
- 22:02the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of
- 22:06his Spirit who lives in you. Think about that.
- 22:13The same Spirit who overshadowed Mary at the incarnation, The
- 22:22same Spirit who descended on Jesus at his baptism, the same
- 22:29Spirit who led and empowered Jesus in his earthly ministry.
- 22:33The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you and
- 22:39lives in me. The same Spirit gives life to
- 22:45our human bodies and empowers us to live in his power, not just
- 22:50in some future heaven, but in this world, in this life.
- 22:58And so we have an obligation, Paul says, no longer to the
- 23:02flesh, but to live as those who are led by the Spirit, to live
- 23:09as children of God, the sons and daughters of God, because we're
- 23:19heirs with a right to inherit and possess all that belongs to
- 23:27God. Did you hear that?
- 23:33We are heirs with a right to inherit and possess all that
- 23:37belongs to God. Co heirs in fact, right
- 23:41alongside Jesus the Messiah, the Son of God.
- 23:49You're a son, you're a daughter of God.
- 23:56This is the empowered life. This is what God says we can
- 24:02legitimately and actually expect as those who belong to Jesus.
- 24:11So I think it's a fair question to ask, why don't we see more
- 24:17people living in this reality? Has the Spirit changed?
- 24:25No. Did God renege on his promises?
- 24:30No, of course not. But God's promise, friends, it's
- 24:35a conditional promise. The condition of that promise is
- 24:41this. Am I living an empowered life?
- 24:46Am I living with the Holy Spirit as the source of my life?
- 24:52Am I setting my mind on? Am I orienting my life around
- 24:56the things of God, or am I allowing the flesh to set the
- 25:02trajectories of my life? Am I somehow trying to live as
- 25:08if both of these realities can be true in my life?
- 25:10That I'm still living according to the flesh but I'm also trying
- 25:13to live according to the Spirit? It can't be if we belong to
- 25:22Jesus, if our sin has been nailed to the cross with Jesus
- 25:35and we need to live like Jesus, surrendered to the Father and
- 25:42empowered by the Spirit. Encountering God in those
- 25:47spiritual practices, having the fruit of the Spirit formed in
- 25:53US, exercising the spiritual gifts we've been given and open
- 25:59to however and wherever the Spirit wants to move and wants
- 26:04us to join him in that work. If we want God to use us like he
- 26:12used Jesus, we have to bring our our lives into alignment with
- 26:20the way of Jesus. There's no other way.
- 26:23There's no middle ground. Paul says we either live
- 26:30according to the flesh or we live according to the Spirit.
- 26:37Let's pray this morning. God, we are so grateful that you
- 26:49have come to us, that you, because of your great love for
- 26:57us, reconciled us to yourself while we were still sinners and
- 27:02we could do nothing about our condition.
- 27:05You came for us, and you came not just to forgive us.
- 27:15You came to redeem us, to sanctify us, to make us holy, to
- 27:21empower us to live as your image in the world, to bear your
- 27:27character to the world so that the world may know who you are.
- 27:37That's what you want for us, and it's what you want from us.
- 27:48So would you, would you do that work in US?
- 27:57Would you apply the reality that in your death and resurrection,
- 28:03sin has been defeated, death has been defeated?
- 28:06Would you apply that to our hearts?
- 28:13Would you empower us to turn away from that old life with all
- 28:21of its trappings, with all of its scars and wounds, to find
- 28:28life in your spirit? And would you help us to walk in
- 28:35step with all that you're doing and all that you want to do?
- 28:44We give you ourselves today, and we trust you to do God what you
- 28:55and you alone can do, what we could never do for ourselves.
- 29:01And we trust you God, because you are faithful and you can do
- 29:10it. So we ask God, would you do it
- 29:12in US? Would you do it?
- 29:14Even today we pray this Jesus in your name, Amen.
