- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio The Bible Study Podcast, Episode nine and eighty four. Today,
- 0:08Speaker 1: The Bible Study Podcast continues the study of the Book
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Exodus with chapter twenty six. Welcome to the Bible
- 0:22Speaker 1: Study Podcast. I'm your host Chris Christensen. Chapter twenty six
- 0:26Speaker 1: starts a three chapter DIY section of the Book of Exodus,
- 0:32Speaker 1: here with how to build things like the tabernacle. We'll
- 0:36Speaker 1: get into that in just a minute, but first a
- 0:37Speaker 1: word from this sponsor. Chapter twenty six The tabernacle. Make
- 0:43Speaker 1: the tabernacle with ten curtains of finally twisted linen and blue,
- 0:47Speaker 1: purple and scarlet yarn with cherubim woven into them by
- 0:51Speaker 1: a skilled worker. All the curtains are to be the
- 0:54Speaker 1: same size twenty eight cubits long and four cubits wide.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Join five of the curtains together and do the same
- 1:01Speaker 1: with the other five. Make loops of blue material along
- 1:05Speaker 1: the edge of the end of the curtain in one set,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and do the same with the end of the curtain
- 1:11Speaker 1: in the other set. Make fifty loops on one curtain
- 1:14Speaker 1: and fifty loops on the end curtain of the other set,
- 1:18Speaker 1: with the loops opposite each other. Then make fifty gold
- 1:21Speaker 1: clasps and use them to fasten the curtains together, so
- 1:25Speaker 1: that the tabernacle is a unit. Make curtains of goat
- 1:29Speaker 1: hair for the tent over the tabernacle eleven altogether. All
- 1:34Speaker 1: eleven curtains are to be the same size thirty cubits
- 1:37Speaker 1: long and four cubits wide. Join five of the curtains
- 1:41Speaker 1: together into one set, and the other six into another set.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Fold the six curtains double at the front of the tent.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Make fifty loops along the edge of the end curtain
- 1:51Speaker 1: in one set, and also along the edge of the
- 1:55Speaker 1: end curtain in the other set. Then make fifty bronze
- 1:59Speaker 1: clasps and put them in the loops to fasten the
- 2:01Speaker 1: tent together as a unit. As for the additional length
- 2:05Speaker 1: of the tent curtains, the half curtain that is left
- 2:08Speaker 1: over is to hang down at the rear of the tabernacle.
- 2:12Speaker 1: The tent curtains will be a cubit longer on both sides.
- 2:15Speaker 1: What is left will hang over the sides of the tabernacle,
- 2:18Speaker 1: so as to cover it. Make for the tent a
- 2:20Speaker 1: covering of ram skins dyed red, and over that a
- 2:24Speaker 1: covering of the other durable leather. Make upright frames of
- 2:29Speaker 1: acacia wood for the tabernacle. Each frame is to be
- 2:32Speaker 1: ten cubits long and a cubit and a half wide,
- 2:35Speaker 1: with two projections set parallel to each other. Make the
- 2:39Speaker 1: frames of the tabernacle in this way. Make twenty frames
- 2:43Speaker 1: for the south side of the tabernacle. Make forty silver
- 2:47Speaker 1: bases to go under them, two bases for each frame,
- 2:50Speaker 1: one under each projection. For the other side, the north
- 2:54Speaker 1: side of the tabernacle, make twenty frames and forty silver bases,
- 2:58Speaker 1: two under each frame. Make six frames for the far end,
- 3:03Speaker 1: that is the west end of the tabernacle, and make
- 3:05Speaker 1: two frames for the corners at the far end. Add
- 3:09Speaker 1: these two corners. They must be double from the bottom
- 3:11Speaker 1: all the way to the top and fitted into a
- 3:13Speaker 1: single ring. Both shall be like that, so there will
- 3:16Speaker 1: be eight frames and sixteen silver bases, two under each frame.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Also make a crossbar of acacia wood, five for the
- 3:24Speaker 1: frames on one side of the tabernacle and five for
- 3:27Speaker 1: those on the other side, and five for the frames
- 3:30Speaker 1: on the west at the far end of the tabernacle.
- 3:32Speaker 1: The center crossbar is to be extended from end to
- 3:35Speaker 1: end at the middle of the frames overlay the frames
- 3:38Speaker 1: with gold, and make gold rings to hold the crossbars,
- 3:41Speaker 1: and overlay the crossbars with gold. Set up the tabernacle
- 3:45Speaker 1: according to the plan shown you on the mountain. Make
- 3:48Speaker 1: a curtain of blue purple and scarlet yarn and finally
- 3:52Speaker 1: twisted linen with cherubim woven into it by a skilled worker.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Hang it with gold hooks on four posts of acacia
- 3:59Speaker 1: wood overlaid with gold and standing on four silver bases.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Hang the curtain from the clasps, and place the arc
- 4:08Speaker 1: of the Covenant law behind the curtain. The curtain will
- 4:11Speaker 1: separate the Holy Place from the most Holy Place. Put
- 4:14Speaker 1: the atonement cover on the arc of the Covenant in
- 4:17Speaker 1: the most holy place. Place the table outside the curtain
- 4:21Speaker 1: on the north side of the tabernacle, and put the
- 4:23Speaker 1: lampstand opposite it on the south side. For the entrance
- 4:27Speaker 1: to the tent, make a curtain of blue purple and
- 4:29Speaker 1: scarlet yarn and finally twisted linen the work of an embroiderer.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Make gold hooks for this curtain, and five posts of
- 4:37Speaker 1: acacia wood overlaid with gold, and cast five bronze bases
- 4:42Speaker 1: for them. Okay, so Moses is given instructions he is
- 4:48Speaker 1: up on the mountain. You may remember he's going to
- 4:50Speaker 1: be up there for a while getting these DIY instructions,
- 4:54Speaker 1: and apparently he's also being shown something because it will
- 4:57Speaker 1: talk about as you were shown in the mountain. It
- 5:01Speaker 1: is hard for me to take these kind of verbal
- 5:04Speaker 1: instructions and turn that into a picture in my head.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So I'm going to put a picture on the Bible
- 5:09Speaker 1: Study podcast dot com that is a rendition of what
- 5:13Speaker 1: the Tabernacle may have looked like. But there are just
- 5:16Speaker 1: a couple things that are useful to understand. So we're
- 5:20Speaker 1: talking about a temporary building made like a tent out
- 5:26Speaker 1: of cloths because we're traveling, and so this is like
- 5:29Speaker 1: a cloth version of what will later be the temple.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And so there are three main areas. There's the outer
- 5:37Speaker 1: area that is the courtyard, which has the bronze altar
- 5:41Speaker 1: and the place where the priests will wash and everybody
- 5:44Speaker 1: can go there. And then there's an inner area that's
- 5:48Speaker 1: entirely covered that is the holy place that priests can go,
- 5:51Speaker 1: and that's going to have the menora. It's going to
- 5:53Speaker 1: have the table with the bread on it. There the
- 5:56Speaker 1: twelve lowes of bread, one for each tribe. And then
- 5:58Speaker 1: there's an inner Inn, and that's the holiest of holies,
- 6:02Speaker 1: and only the high priests can go there and only
- 6:04Speaker 1: once a year and so, and that's where you're going
- 6:07Speaker 1: to find the Ark of the Covenant with its cherubim
- 6:10Speaker 1: on it. And then all of these things are increasingly
- 6:13Speaker 1: fancy as you get from the outer courtyard, which has
- 6:17Speaker 1: things that are bronze, and to the inner Courtyard and
- 6:21Speaker 1: the Holiest of Holies, where you get more and more
- 6:23Speaker 1: things made of gold. And this tent here, the tentive meeting,
- 6:28Speaker 1: or the Tabernacle, is what they're going to use for
- 6:32Speaker 1: worship in this time, really right up until Solomon's Temple
- 6:37Speaker 1: is built. So for hundreds of years, this will be
- 6:41Speaker 1: where the Israelites worship and it will move obviously with
- 6:47Speaker 1: them in the wilderness, but it will also move it
- 6:50Speaker 1: and then potentially later on it is movable. Actually, I
- 6:54Speaker 1: keep the Ark of the Covenant. I don't know that
- 6:56Speaker 1: the tabernacle survives into the time of the Kings. The
- 6:59Speaker 1: Ark of the Covenant does, for sure, But there are
- 7:02Speaker 1: also more permanent altars that are set up before the
- 7:05Speaker 1: Tumple time. And then continuing me on to the next
- 7:09Speaker 1: chapter the altar of burnt offering, but then an author
- 7:13Speaker 1: of acacia wood three cubits high. It is to be square,
- 7:16Speaker 1: five cubits long and five cubits wide. Make a horn
- 7:19Speaker 1: at each of the four corners, that the horns and
- 7:22Speaker 1: the altar are of one piece, and overlay the altar
- 7:25Speaker 1: with bronze. Make all its utensils of bronze. It's pot
- 7:28Speaker 1: to remove the ashes, and its shovels, sprinkling bowls, meat forks,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and fire pans. Make a grating for it a bronze network,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and make a bronze ring at each of the four
- 7:37Speaker 1: corners of the network. Put it under the ledge of
- 7:40Speaker 1: the altar, so it is halfway up the altar. Make
- 7:43Speaker 1: poles of acacia wood for the altar and overlay them
- 7:45Speaker 1: with bronze. The poles are to be inserted into the
- 7:48Speaker 1: ring so that they will be on two sides of
- 7:50Speaker 1: the altar when it is carried. Make the altar hollow
- 7:52Speaker 1: out of boards. It is to be made just as
- 7:55Speaker 1: you were shown on the mountain. Okay, so this is
- 7:59Speaker 1: that all that will be in the courtyard which we're
- 8:02Speaker 1: about to talk about, and this is where sacrifices will
- 8:06Speaker 1: be made. And again cubit is the length from your
- 8:10Speaker 1: tip of your fingers to your elbow, So think of
- 8:12Speaker 1: it as a foot and a half roughly, so three
- 8:15Speaker 1: cubits high. It's roughly four and a half feet high square.
- 8:19Speaker 1: And then continue on for the courtyard. Make a courtyard
- 8:23Speaker 1: for the tabernacle. The south side shall be one hundred
- 8:25Speaker 1: cubits long, and it is to have curtains of finely
- 8:28Speaker 1: twisted linen, with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and
- 8:32Speaker 1: with silver hooks and bands on the posts. The north
- 8:35Speaker 1: side shall be one hundred cubits long, and to have
- 8:38Speaker 1: curtains with twenty posts and twenty bronze bases, and with
- 8:42Speaker 1: silver hooks and bands on the posts. The west side
- 8:46Speaker 1: of the courtyard is be fifty cubits wide, and to
- 8:48Speaker 1: have curtains with ten posts and ten bases. On the
- 8:51Speaker 1: east end, toward the sunrise, the courtyard shall also be
- 8:54Speaker 1: fifty cubits wide. Curtains fifteen cubits long are to be
- 8:58Speaker 1: on one side of the entrance with three posts and
- 9:01Speaker 1: three bases, and curtains fifteen cubits longer to be on
- 9:04Speaker 1: the other side, with three posts and three bases. For
- 9:07Speaker 1: the entrance to the courtyard. Provide a curtain twenty cubits
- 9:10Speaker 1: long of blue, purple and scarlet yarn and finally twisted
- 9:14Speaker 1: linen the work of an embroiderer, with four posts and
- 9:17Speaker 1: four bases. All the posts around the courtyard are to
- 9:20Speaker 1: have silver bands and hooks and bronze bases. The courtyard
- 9:24Speaker 1: shall be one hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide,
- 9:27Speaker 1: with curtains of finally twisted linen five cubits high, and
- 9:31Speaker 1: with bronze bases. All the other articles used in the
- 9:34Speaker 1: surface of the tabernacle, whatever their function, including all the
- 9:38Speaker 1: tent pegs for it and those for the courtyard, are
- 9:40Speaker 1: to be of bronze. So this is that outer place
- 9:44Speaker 1: where people can go. And it's roughly one hundred cubits
- 9:47Speaker 1: by fifty cubits, so roughly one hundred and fifty feet
- 9:50Speaker 1: on the longside and seventy five feet on the narrow side.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And then one last thing for this week, oil for
- 9:57Speaker 1: the lampstand. Command the Israelites to bing you clear oil
- 10:01Speaker 1: of pressed olives for the light, so that the lamps
- 10:04Speaker 1: may be kept burning. And the tent of meeting outside
- 10:07Speaker 1: the curtain that shields the arc of the Covenant law.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Aaron and his sons are to keep lamps burning before
- 10:12Speaker 1: the Lord from evening till morning. This is to be
- 10:16Speaker 1: a lasting ordinance among the Israelites for generations to come.
- 10:20Speaker 1: And so this will is the kind of first foreshadowing
- 10:23Speaker 1: what later will turn into the miracle of Hanukkah, where
- 10:28Speaker 1: the lamps keep burning even when you run out of oil.
- 10:31Speaker 1: But it's these lamps here that are in that holy place,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but not the holiest of holy place, and that are
- 10:38Speaker 1: supposed to be kept burning by the priests that will
- 10:42Speaker 1: eventually turn into that same thing in the Temple when
- 10:46Speaker 1: the Temple is constructed by Solomon and then reconstructored after
- 10:50Speaker 1: the time of the Babylonian captivity. Again this whole thing
- 10:54Speaker 1: being used as a model later for the Temple. And
- 11:01Speaker 1: of course this is important for us as Christians to understand.
- 11:05Speaker 1: This is the model here of the way of the limitations,
- 11:11Speaker 1: in some ways too, of access to God, where only
- 11:13Speaker 1: the priests can go this far, and only the high
- 11:15Speaker 1: priest can go into the holiest of holies. And of
- 11:17Speaker 1: course when Jesus death on the cross tears the temple
- 11:22Speaker 1: curtain from top to bottom, meaning that there is a
- 11:26Speaker 1: way open now for all to go into the holiest
- 11:29Speaker 1: of holies. That is a symbol here that would be
- 11:33Speaker 1: similar in the Tabernacle of if Jesus were to die
- 11:37Speaker 1: at the time of the Tabernacle again, they would be
- 11:39Speaker 1: a curtain in front of the holiest of holies to
- 11:41Speaker 1: keep people out. And it has that same symbology of
- 11:46Speaker 1: what is the access to God? That the access to
- 11:49Speaker 1: God is not just for priests, not just for the
- 11:52Speaker 1: high priest anymore, but for a priesthood of all believers.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And with that we're going to end this rather dioy
- 11:59Speaker 1: episode of the Bible Study Podcast. If you have any questions,
