- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Ben I played drums in Calval Louise and I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: Amazon I play bass, and yeah we're from Cavalies.
- 0:21Speaker 2: We're missing Yestterday, who's the guitarist, singer and composer of
- 0:25Speaker 2: the band. And yeah, we're a multi nationality band from
- 0:31Speaker 2: based in the UK.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Very nice to hear, guys. Thanks for joining us today.
- 0:35Speaker 3: It's pleasure to speak what it is. Yeah, Like, so
- 0:39Speaker 3: the main reason we're here, I want to say, it's
- 0:41Speaker 3: a Calvaluise is said to release your new album, Edge
- 0:44Speaker 3: of the Abyss on the eleventh of July.
- 0:46Speaker 4: So that's not long now, guys.
- 0:47Speaker 1: How are you feeling, Yes, it's great, Like we're we're
- 0:51Speaker 1: all super hyped for it. You know when when was
- 0:54Speaker 1: it wraps? It was like late last year?
- 0:57Speaker 5: Yeah, like yeah, late last year. It feels a bit.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it feels like we don't realize it yet, you
- 1:03Speaker 2: know what I mean. For us, it has been in
- 1:05Speaker 2: the pipes for a while, just releasing singles and it's like,
- 1:09Speaker 2: finally the whole thing's going to be out. Can't wait
- 1:11Speaker 2: to see what the what everyone has to say about it.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Yeah, this film is going to be a bit difficult
- 1:17Speaker 4: for you guys. Answer.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I asked it a lot, and it's pretty easy for
- 1:20Speaker 3: most people. But what were you going for musically with
- 1:22Speaker 3: the album? I tell us about the musical side of it.
- 1:24Speaker 3: There's so much going on.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Mm hmm, yeah, so yeah, I guess like it's it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: a continuous evolution like our sound has been from the start,
- 1:37Speaker 1: and it's it's kind of closer to what I think
- 1:43Speaker 1: we've always wanted to do, and every every release we've done,
- 1:47Speaker 1: like throughout the band's timeline has increasingly got closer to that.
- 1:52Speaker 1: And it's just a it's almost like a bit of
- 1:54Speaker 1: a non stop vision and it kind of like evolves
- 1:57Speaker 1: as it goes, and it's you know, obviously this album
- 2:01Speaker 1: is still very much in the heavy vein much like
- 2:04Speaker 1: the last release, like probably even a little bit more so,
- 2:09Speaker 1: I would say.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and the whole the whole like music process is
- 2:14Speaker 2: quite interesting because we're very di y.
- 2:17Speaker 5: We don't we didn't go to the studio or anything.
- 2:19Speaker 5: We did everything.
- 2:19Speaker 2: We do everything at home, So just just writes the
- 2:23Speaker 2: songs on like logic on her computer to you know,
- 2:26Speaker 2: she'll put everything out there that she feels like putting,
- 2:30Speaker 2: like vocals, guitar, she'll do like drafts of drums and
- 2:33Speaker 2: you know, she put everything and then the and then
- 2:37Speaker 2: she the session gets passed around, so she gives us
- 2:41Speaker 2: to She gives the session to us to work out
- 2:43Speaker 2: our part to like, you know, figure out what we
- 2:46Speaker 2: want to do.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:47Speaker 5: And then and then we.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Record it each on our own same at home, you know, uh,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and then send it back and then all the stems
- 2:56Speaker 2: get compiled just as a bit more production on it,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and then it gets sent to our friend Maza, whose
- 3:04Speaker 2: co producer on the album, who's.
- 3:07Speaker 5: Based in Italy. He is a producer in Italy.
- 3:09Speaker 2: He's worked on our previous release, the mixtape, and so
- 3:13Speaker 2: he does mostly you know, instrumental production on it, and
- 3:17Speaker 2: then he sends his stem back and then the stems
- 3:21Speaker 2: go to Gareth mcgrillin, who is a member of Pendulum
- 3:26Speaker 2: and Knife Party who had the chance to work with
- 3:29Speaker 2: on this album.
- 3:31Speaker 5: It was incredible.
- 3:32Speaker 2: We've always been a great, like huge fan of him
- 3:36Speaker 2: and having him joined the album was like the Droom
- 3:40Speaker 2: come true. So he will take the stem, do extra
- 3:44Speaker 2: you know, another layer of production, and then finally this
- 3:48Speaker 2: will all get packed packaged and send to the mastering
- 3:52Speaker 2: engineer who is probably Ignaw Dean McCarthy who finally does
- 3:57Speaker 2: this last layer of mix. Yeah, so we all had
- 4:03Speaker 2: to do this remotely because we were all in different
- 4:06Speaker 2: part of the world at all times, so it was
- 4:10Speaker 2: a big The process was a bit chaotic, but it
- 4:12Speaker 2: was really fun. So we had to work at random
- 4:16Speaker 2: hours of the day and night just to you know, when.
- 4:18Speaker 5: Any day.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Had released the singles Aimless, under the Skin, That Lane,
- 4:27Speaker 3: and w g F, which are assuming said for what
- 4:30Speaker 3: the fuck a I could study representation of what to
- 4:34Speaker 3: expect from whole album.
- 4:37Speaker 1: I think, like in general, Like I mean, the response
- 4:40Speaker 1: so far to those those songs and those releases have
- 4:42Speaker 1: been like incredible, Like people have just loved them. And yeah,
- 4:47Speaker 1: it's made us like super happy, super hyped for the
- 4:49Speaker 1: rest of the album and.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Especially live as well, because we these songs were we
- 4:54Speaker 2: started playing live this year and some of them we
- 4:59Speaker 2: played live for the first time on the previous tour
- 5:01Speaker 2: we did with Bloodywood. And the response has been amazing
- 5:05Speaker 2: every time, So which is a great sign. Like if
- 5:09Speaker 2: song work live and the audience you know, reacts well
- 5:11Speaker 2: to it, it's usually a really good sign.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Hit us good start anyway, Yeah, it's more than just
- 5:20Speaker 3: a concept album, like it's more like a sci fi
- 5:22Speaker 3: it's travy games, and it's got one of the most
- 5:24Speaker 3: stunning and a mandaining story arcs I've ever heard for
- 5:27Speaker 3: an album.
- 5:27Speaker 4: So can you run us through? And simplified a bit.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Yeah, So the general concept is that there are different
- 5:38Speaker 2: worlds superposed on top of ours, and everybody in the world,
- 5:45Speaker 2: like us, they've got a double somewhere in another world.
- 5:50Speaker 2: And all the travelers they called people like us who
- 5:57Speaker 2: are in search of their double, aimed to.
- 6:01Speaker 5: Find it and reunite. And yeah, it's there's.
- 6:05Speaker 2: A lot to it, and basically story spans across multiple
- 6:10Speaker 2: errors and multiple worlds. So we're just telling it bits
- 6:15Speaker 2: at a time, video by video, you know, with our
- 6:19Speaker 2: means and our friends and you know, just the y
- 6:23Speaker 2: but there is a lot, basically.
- 6:25Speaker 5: That's the kind of concept and there there's.
- 6:27Speaker 2: A lot, you know, a little intricate, intricacy story, you know,
- 6:32Speaker 2: little And obviously the main character is Louise, like the
- 6:36Speaker 2: name of the bond, and so we get we get
- 6:41Speaker 2: introduced to to her in like the earlier video a.
- 6:47Speaker 5: Dating back to three years ago I think it was.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Yeah, and all the all the releases have been linked together.
- 6:55Speaker 5: And it's just that.
- 6:58Speaker 2: As as we've been getting closer to this album released,
- 7:02Speaker 2: the release, the videos, the story have been has become
- 7:06Speaker 2: more tangible like it's been because it's become more you know,
- 7:12Speaker 2: easier to explain, like we've.
- 7:14Speaker 1: Been communicate it in a like a more clear way.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I guess, yeah, I have more of an idea where
- 7:20Speaker 3: you're going with it, so they'd understand what you were saying.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And it's more like how to say it, how to
- 7:25Speaker 2: tell it, yeah, with like the characters and the story
- 7:28Speaker 2: and so people can understand.
- 7:30Speaker 1: And the thing is, like the story has been it's
- 7:32Speaker 1: actually older than the band itself. It's like Jess has
- 7:35Speaker 1: been doing that for years, even before even before you
- 7:40Speaker 1: guys know, right, yeah and yeah. So it's just it's
- 7:44Speaker 1: it's an extension of this core story and it's just
- 7:47Speaker 1: a constant retelling in different ways. And yeah, it's just a.
- 7:54Speaker 3: That's the sort of thing if you go on over multiple albums,
- 7:57Speaker 3: like is it is it all wrapped up on this
- 7:58Speaker 3: one or is it something that's going to be general.
- 8:01Speaker 2: No, No, it's it's it's been going since the style
- 8:03Speaker 2: of the band, and it will keep going maybe as
- 8:07Speaker 2: we keep going with the band.
- 8:09Speaker 5: Uh, there is a we have a discord.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I like to plug it where we have Like we're
- 8:16Speaker 2: trying to compile all the law information about the story,
- 8:21Speaker 2: so you know, if people are interested. I want to
- 8:24Speaker 2: know more about the characters to you know, the worlds
- 8:27Speaker 2: to hit the story. We've got a lot of information
- 8:30Speaker 2: on discord.
- 8:32Speaker 4: What's what, how they get to that, what's why. Pug
- 8:35Speaker 4: may give it a full pug.
- 8:36Speaker 5: Link tree Cavalaries dot com.
- 8:38Speaker 2: You've got all the links there now.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I love the way entering a bit starts to you
- 8:44Speaker 3: guys with a song tunnel vision, like especially for people
- 8:47Speaker 3: like myself, we've never heard of the band before or
- 8:49Speaker 3: had any music like that. Through the soft ambient intro
- 8:52Speaker 3: pathage and there's a massive screen that shifts focus completely
- 8:55Speaker 3: and it becomes aggressively spark and then the rapid fire
- 8:59Speaker 3: almost rap like vocals come over the top before things
- 9:02Speaker 3: it just dropped and shaw. That's in the first thirty
- 9:04Speaker 3: seconds of the song. Like I was looking at the screen, gun,
- 9:07Speaker 3: what the fuck have I just got into here? Like,
- 9:11Speaker 3: starting with a song like that that goes through so
- 9:13Speaker 3: many emotions, I was it grant people.
- 9:15Speaker 4: Are that.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Welcome to calv Yeah.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Fully enough, the song was to post the other one
- 9:23Speaker 2: was supposed to start with a different song.
- 9:25Speaker 5: Yeah, then you brought up, you brought up.
- 9:27Speaker 1: I was like, tunnel Vision is a better opener for it. Yeah,
- 9:31Speaker 1: it was supposed to start with a song called Bareleier
- 9:33Speaker 1: Response and and tunnel Vision and Barely Response was swapped
- 9:37Speaker 1: and the original track listing and yeah, I just kind
- 9:42Speaker 1: of like it was just a gut feeling for me.
- 9:44Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, guys, like I think I think
- 9:46Speaker 1: she started.
- 9:46Speaker 2: The tunnel Vision and at that point the artwork and
- 9:52Speaker 2: sent and like to make the vinyl and stuff, I.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Had to change it all.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Wait, wait, we're gonna want too song?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, I loved it essentially, but those
- 10:08Speaker 3: do aren't familiar with the band. Like, in a nutshell,
- 10:10Speaker 3: your music mixes punk, metal, electronics, but there's a hell
- 10:13Speaker 3: of a lot more going on that. There's a cinematic helmet, sure,
- 10:16Speaker 3: there's atmospheric, it's there's a lot going on, But how
- 10:19Speaker 3: do you get the balance right in the creative process,
- 10:22Speaker 3: Like it must be a fucking nightmare.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I mean, most of it's down to Jess, to be honest, Like,
- 10:28Speaker 2: you know, she she always like, I like how unrestricted
- 10:32Speaker 2: she is in the creative process, Like you know, she'll
- 10:35Speaker 2: send us early demos and there's already all the elements
- 10:38Speaker 2: of the song. Is like everything needs to find the
- 10:41Speaker 2: place and it all comes together. I mean yeah, like
- 10:46Speaker 2: quite quite naturally. And it's true that sometimes you feel like, wait,
- 10:49Speaker 2: these things shouldn't go together, like electronic and like Latin
- 10:53Speaker 2: rhythm and quattrill and you know, and all sorts of
- 10:56Speaker 2: different rhythm and break. But yeah, us somehow it always
- 11:01Speaker 2: comes together into like a great piece. And that's why
- 11:06Speaker 2: we always can't wait to see what which is going
- 11:08Speaker 2: to come up with next?
- 11:10Speaker 4: Exactly right.
- 11:11Speaker 3: I listened to the album for Somebody Never heard You before,
- 11:13Speaker 3: Like it shouldn't go together and there's shit going on there.
- 11:16Speaker 3: They just should not go in the same fucking song,
- 11:19Speaker 3: but you guys pull it off. It's it's a tribute
- 11:22Speaker 3: to hate the step inside your fucking brains for a day.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Anything's scary in there.
- 11:32Speaker 2: It's interesting when it comes when it comes time to
- 11:35Speaker 2: play it live, it's it's a lot of like you know,
- 11:39Speaker 2: head scratching and like okay, let's let's figure this out.
- 11:42Speaker 1: How we're going to play this problem solving and figuring
- 11:45Speaker 1: out you know, what we did, what we're all doing? Yeah,
- 11:48Speaker 1: on stage?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Actually on that running matter with the live shows, because
- 11:51Speaker 3: the album's quite conceptually based and it runs along the
- 11:54Speaker 3: story ArcLight. Do you have to play the songs in
- 11:57Speaker 3: order of the album when you play live or can
- 11:59Speaker 3: you still chop them around?
- 12:01Speaker 1: No? No, we can. We can do them in any
- 12:03Speaker 1: order we want live. And it's not this like the
- 12:08Speaker 1: the track listing on the record is not chronological, yess.
- 12:13Speaker 1: You know, the songs are not you know, it's it's
- 12:16Speaker 1: slay more abstract than that.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Right, col You mentioned your previous album to say, like
- 12:21Speaker 3: you've released rhight Oceros, sen Youphic before, but there wasn't
- 12:24Speaker 3: say your mixtape Over the Threshold came out in twenty
- 12:27Speaker 3: twenty three that the world actually started to take notice
- 12:29Speaker 3: from Talvalais. So why do you think people resonated with
- 12:32Speaker 3: the songs on that more than what they did with
- 12:34Speaker 3: the other stuff.
- 12:38Speaker 5: I think, I don't know.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I think it's yeah, I think it's probably because Jess
- 12:44Speaker 1: as a songwriter started to settle on her sound and
- 12:49Speaker 1: like what she wanted to create more, you know, and
- 12:53Speaker 1: I mean you see this with bands all the time,
- 12:54Speaker 1: you know, it takes some time for them to like
- 12:58Speaker 1: like find their sound, as people like to say, And
- 13:00Speaker 1: I think that's what just really did with the mixtape.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I was going to say something similar like that.
- 13:08Speaker 2: I think the mixtape was definitely the point where we
- 13:13Speaker 2: reached the closest sound to what we what we was
- 13:17Speaker 2: all meant to be. And I feel like that's that
- 13:21Speaker 2: resonates hopefully with people more because that was definitely the
- 13:27Speaker 2: how would you say, Yeah, like that was you know, finally, finally,
- 13:32Speaker 2: that was like the result that we were all kind
- 13:36Speaker 2: of aiming towards from the start without being able to
- 13:40Speaker 2: reach it for many different reasons.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Yeah, we sort of touched on this before, but that
- 13:45Speaker 3: mixtape led the Pendulums Garreth macgrill in here in Your
- 13:48Speaker 3: Music Can originally actually via Instagram, Like that must have
- 13:51Speaker 3: been pretty surreal moment getting the message of him and gone, nah,
- 13:54Speaker 3: can't be.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Yeah, that was pretty wild.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Yeah, it was. It was crazy. I used to listen
- 14:01Speaker 1: to Pendulum quite a lot, you know, my early in
- 14:04Speaker 1: my early twenties, and it was really cool, Like right
- 14:08Speaker 1: when the record Immersion came out, that was sort of
- 14:11Speaker 1: my introduction to them, and yeah, just like getting to
- 14:15Speaker 1: meet Gareth and work with him was just like super cool,
- 14:20Speaker 1: super super cool.
- 14:21Speaker 5: Yeah and surreal moment.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Like you said, that did lead to him working with
- 14:26Speaker 3: you on edginy Abiz. So what sorts of things did
- 14:29Speaker 3: he bring to the to the band's sound on that album.
- 14:33Speaker 1: I mean, yeah, to the sounds, I mean just overall,
- 14:37Speaker 1: he brought so much to the record and to us,
- 14:40Speaker 1: like he gave us. He gave us a lot of advice,
- 14:42Speaker 1: a lot of really good advice. It really took us
- 14:45Speaker 1: under his wing. He was such a mentor, wasn't he
- 14:48Speaker 1: in so many ways? Like sonically he's like I feel
- 14:55Speaker 1: like he just he just boosted it all in me,
- 14:57Speaker 1: Like he's just with other microphones and stuff like he
- 15:03Speaker 1: he was super knowledgeable about different mic microphones, mic types
- 15:07Speaker 1: and voice types as well, because he'd listened to Jess's
- 15:10Speaker 1: stem recordings and he was just like, oh, like maybe
- 15:13Speaker 1: he try this, or like angle the mic slightly this way,
- 15:16Speaker 1: or you know, he was giving Jess tips Like yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 1: it's just super super knowledgeable. Like for someone who's been
- 15:24Speaker 1: in the the studio and production world for like years
- 15:29Speaker 1: and years and years, he's just got a breadth of
- 15:31Speaker 1: knowledge that's so wide and so deep.
- 15:34Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really really great because he helped us
- 15:37Speaker 2: a lot to get the best out of what we
- 15:39Speaker 2: have because we we do everything at home with you know,
- 15:44Speaker 2: not super expensive stuff, So he gave us little tips
- 15:48Speaker 2: to like improve the quality of the recording as much
- 15:50Speaker 2: as possible with the equipment we have. And then yeah,
- 15:54Speaker 2: he's just like it just brought like his own touch
- 15:57Speaker 2: to the productions process, especially for vocal He's got like,
- 16:02Speaker 2: you know, a whole bunch of production tricks and little
- 16:06Speaker 2: magic they happened to the vocals and to the rest
- 16:10Speaker 2: of the instruments. So yeah, it's been great. And he
- 16:13Speaker 2: co wrote two songs on the album with Jess as well,
- 16:17Speaker 2: so he co wrote under the Skin and Hated Me,
- 16:21Speaker 2: So that's also a big, you know, a big part.
- 16:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Cool, And have you got any any chores coming up
- 16:28Speaker 3: that are going to help promote the album?
- 16:30Speaker 5: Absolutely.
- 16:31Speaker 2: We are coming back to the US in September, so
- 16:36Speaker 2: I think it's went on sale this week actually, So
- 16:41Speaker 2: we we're going back for a month in the US
- 16:45Speaker 2: across the continent, well across the country, and then after
- 16:51Speaker 2: that we are going to Europe with straight from the path, yeah,
- 16:58Speaker 2: which we love and we're super excited about. So we'll
- 17:02Speaker 2: be Yeah, we'll be doing US and Europe before the
- 17:06Speaker 2: end of the year, and then yeah, we'll see you
- 17:09Speaker 2: next year, probably.
- 17:10Speaker 3: More straight from the part to coming to Australia in August.
- 17:13Speaker 3: It's just got an out today. You should tell them
- 17:14Speaker 3: I walked. Sometimes you should tell them bringing over with them,
- 17:18Speaker 3: tell them bring you over here.
- 17:19Speaker 1: I saw that post earlier today.
- 17:21Speaker 5: I was like, yeah, yeah, we've never been to Australia yet.
- 17:24Speaker 4: I reckon you, guys. I'm going to have a chat
- 17:27Speaker 4: to a few people I know and.
- 17:28Speaker 7: See what we can do for you, because I reckon
- 17:30Speaker 7: you can kill it over here. Before I let you go, guys,
- 17:37Speaker 7: I've got a segment that I do called photo bombs.
- 17:39Speaker 7: So basically, before I had a chat with you, I've
- 17:41Speaker 7: bentrolling your social media and I've come up with a
- 17:43Speaker 7: few photos that I want to know a little bit
- 17:44Speaker 7: more about.
- 17:46Speaker 4: So this one first one is for you, buddy.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Now, there's quite a lot of photos of you and
- 17:52Speaker 3: Jess in that position on stage right. They've never got
- 17:56Speaker 3: one pair shape like if you ever misjudged the distance
- 17:58Speaker 3: and head but at each other or something like that.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Surprisingly not, you know, that's that's especially at the time.
- 18:05Speaker 2: I feel like the shows were a lot more punk
- 18:08Speaker 2: at the time in terms of because you know, it
- 18:11Speaker 2: was all you know, it was all the a y
- 18:14Speaker 2: and it was small venues and it was you know,
- 18:17Speaker 2: so we were just kind of bashing around and we yeah,
- 18:21Speaker 2: we always used to do that.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Kind of like gently headbooked during the show.
- 18:28Speaker 2: And surprisingly, I'm still amazed that, you know, it was
- 18:33Speaker 2: all we never actually hurt ourselves.
