Transcript
- 0:02I'm Miller Condon, Welcome back Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:05Trenton Ken with you for another hour.
- 0:07Bottom of the hour, Scott Dockerman covers college
- 0:10football for the athletic. He was at in Indianapolis for
- 0:13the Big 10 championship game. He was, I believe one of the
- 0:17college football writers riding the Matt Campbell did a nice
- 0:20piece on Iowa State football over the weekend as well.
- 0:23So Scott Dockerman coming up at 1:30 Mr. Monday night with his
- 0:26pick coming up on tonight's Monday Night Football game.
- 0:29Right now, let's get to for buddy Bama.
- 0:30Bob, the College Football Playoff committee has spoken.
- 0:34The 12 teams have been determined like it or not, and I
- 0:37don't, But none the less, no Notre Dame.
- 0:41And then we move on. How are you, Bama?
- 0:45I think they got it right, kid. Yeah, that's kind of I guess
- 0:51down to your part of the of the country, right.
- 0:53Feeling pretty good about the what the committee's work.
- 0:56Well, I, you know, I, I'm kidding a little bit because I
- 1:00think I, I think I said Friday on the show that I didn't think
- 1:03the game would be that I thought the game would be competitive.
- 1:06And if it was, then you couldn't keep Alabama out.
- 1:10Well, it turns out that it wasn't.
- 1:12And of course you, you know, you wind up with, you know, now, you
- 1:17know, they had to play the extra game, the extra data point.
- 1:19Does it matter? How much does it matter?
- 1:20All this kind of thing. I would have been good,
- 1:22honestly, with any of the three in, you know, you could have had
- 1:25Notre Dame in there. You could have had Miami in and
- 1:31you could have left Alabama. You could have dropped Alabama
- 1:33to 10. I mean, when you look at it,
- 1:36Alabama's resume, right, strength of schedule, FT all
- 1:40these metrics that they use, the analytics that they use, they're
- 1:42top ten in all three of them. And any any team, there's no
- 1:47team that can match that. However, we hostile what they
- 1:52looked like against Georgia and that was kind of continuing the
- 1:54trend of struggling offensively down the stretch.
- 1:57Oklahoma, Auburn a little bit against LSU and certainly
- 2:01against Georgia. I think their defense played
- 2:03well because you know, Georgia, you know, blocked punt sets them
- 2:07up inside the red zone. The other pick by Ty Simpson
- 2:10sets them up inside the 40. I think their defense can hang
- 2:14the offense is something's wrong with it broken, whatever you
- 2:17want to call it. Still no running game.
- 2:18So again, I was shocked to see them when they came up at #9
- 2:22that's what really surprised me. I thought they had a good
- 2:25chance. And we can argue the extra data
- 2:27point. How much should it punish him,
- 2:29all this type of thing. But I think the committee and I
- 2:32will buy that there's a little bit of bias in there.
- 2:35Maybe not with the name, but you, let's face it, ESPN and to
- 2:42some extent the SEC is what feeds all of this, right?
- 2:45This whole this whole machine, if you start punishing a team
- 2:51that makes the SEC championship and leave them out of the
- 2:55playoff, I mean, you're there's some be you think you think the
- 2:59Notre Dame maybe as upset today, right?
- 3:01And he is and he's got a right to be.
- 3:04I agree with it. I don't like them pulling out of
- 3:07the bowl game. I understand why they did it.
- 3:08I think as much as anything, it's kind of a middle finger.
- 3:11You know, we're not we're not going to give you the Notre Dame
- 3:15BYU consolation game, you know, for to for you to soak up 50
- 3:19million viewers or whatever it is, you know, however many
- 3:22millions. So we're not going to give you
- 3:23that. But I again, any, any two of the
- 3:29three you could have put in and and I would have, I couldn't
- 3:32have really made it. I could have made a case for the
- 3:34whoever got left out You could have made a case for, but you
- 3:37also could make a case for the 2 that made it in.
- 3:40The thing that really irritates me as much as anything is this
- 3:43whole, well, we had to wait for BYU, you know, just no, you
- 3:46didn't because you knew Tuesday night.
- 3:48I hate it. The BYU was not going to be
- 3:5211th. They were either going to win
- 3:53the game and get moved up there by putting Notre Dame and Miami,
- 3:57who were sitting at home next to each other, or they were going
- 3:59to lose and fall out. So you should have had Miami
- 4:03ranked ahead of Notre Dame Tuesday night.
- 4:05That's the biggest beef I've got because that hole we had to wait
- 4:09to see what happened with BYU is crap because something was going
- 4:12to happen to BYU. Either win it or lose it.
- 4:16They were going to move out of way from in between those two.
- 4:18You should have at least flipped it.
- 4:21I know that print hates the TV show I.
- 4:23Do too now. It's done.
- 4:25It makes no sense. It absolutely makes no sense.
- 4:28And again, you know, there's So I think there's a lot of
- 4:34politics at play here. I think they were tasked with a
- 4:36pretty tough task, I'll say that.
- 4:40The other thing is we've got to do something with these AQ's,
- 4:43right? Yes.
- 4:44James Madison being in this field is an absolute.
- 4:47Yes, joke, but that's the river rules.
- 4:50Here's my beef about it. They change the rules every
- 4:52Tuesday. They change the rules every
- 4:54Tuesday. It's like you've been listening
- 4:56to me for however long this. Stupid.
- 4:58Well, why couldn't you change this damn rule then?
- 5:00And and put Duke in or put somebody else in, as opposed to
- 5:03two, two, group of five. You would rather see Duke in
- 5:06there. I'd rather seen anybody but
- 5:07James Madison. Here's the good news.
- 5:09The NFL is king and the NFL realized how stupid college
- 5:13football's about to be, and they gave us Packers and Bears on
- 5:16that Saturday night. I will not watch college
- 5:18football. Yes, I'm going to cut off my
- 5:20nose to spite my damn face because I love college football.
- 5:23I won't watch a minute of that damn game.
- 5:25I'll be watching Bears. Packers.
- 5:27And it'll be relegated over to TNT.
- 5:29And they did not probably get the games that initially thought
- 5:32that they were going to get in this.
- 5:34Prime time Saturday night we're getting we're getting the Tulane
- 5:36game and the James Madison game. Bama, here's my biggest problem
- 5:40with Alabama getting in is it is the brand.
- 5:44If Mississippi State had this resume, they're not getting in
- 5:48getting blown out in two games like they did losing to a bad
- 5:52Florida State team. Miami doesn't have a loss like
- 5:54that. Notre Dame has doesn't have a
- 5:55loss like that. They lost by a combined 4
- 5:57points. Alabama got blown out by a bad
- 5:59football team, was non competitive in their last game
- 6:03of the year, squeaked by a average at best Auburn team.
- 6:07This is not the team playing well.
- 6:08This is not a team that has a resume.
- 6:10What they did in October is what has elevated them.
- 6:13That is it. You look at the rest of the
- 6:15resume, there's not a whole lot left.
- 6:17A one month of good football does not mean you are a playoff
- 6:20team, Bama. And if it was Mississippi State
- 6:23or Auburn, they would not be getting it.
- 6:25It is the Alabama brand. I understand.
- 6:28And again, no argument there. I don't think it, I really don't
- 6:32think it's the Alabama brand as much as the SEC brand.
- 6:36Now we can argue that and we can debate that and everything else.
- 6:39But yes, they got in during that little that eight week stretch
- 6:43they had where they where they went into Athens and won and
- 6:46then they won I think the next 7 or 8 and they you know, they
- 6:49beat the four ranked teams in a row and all that kind of thing,
- 6:52right? But there's so many things that
- 6:54you just look at this and and you know, what if Texas had beat
- 6:59A&M, well, then Alabama sitting at home, we don't get to see how
- 7:01bad they're playing again and they're in, right?
- 7:06What if Texas had beat Florida? That's the big key that kept
- 7:09Texas out, right? So now Texas maybe sits at home.
- 7:14Well, and then you get this, you get this egg that Alabama laid
- 7:17against Georgia. Well, now who are you going to
- 7:20leave out? You leave out Oklahoma because
- 7:22Texas beat them head to head. Well, then they're raising their
- 7:24hand and go, wait a minute. You know, we want in we want in
- 7:27Tuscaloosa. So it's there's so many little
- 7:29data points. I have a thing.
- 7:32Here's my conspiracy, if I can say it theory, right.
- 7:36What if Virginia had won, had beaten Duke?
- 7:39I don't think Miami's in. I think they were so afraid to
- 7:41leave an ACC team out of this field.
- 7:44I think I think Virginia gets in as that 11 seat and I think
- 7:49Notre Dame is in and Miami is out.
- 7:51Yeah. I mean, that's that's, you know,
- 7:52if you want to really go scorched through conspiracies,
- 7:55that's one. I mean, that's one that I'm
- 7:56throwing out there because I think they were so afraid to
- 7:59leave a powerful team completely out of this tournament.
- 8:04But again, I think something that can be fixed just like we
- 8:07fixed last year, right, We fixed the whole, you know, Boise
- 8:10getting an automatic or a buy right, that was stupid.
- 8:13We can fix somehow some way, some metric, whatever make it
- 8:17up. I don't care.
- 8:18They only have I think it is important that we have a group
- 8:22of five representative. I don't care who it is every
- 8:25year, whether one yes, but that's it.
- 8:27You this whole thing about. Or you could be voted in.
- 8:31There has to be. Yes, absolutely.
- 8:33If you have a resume, yes, fine. If there's 213 to no teams in a
- 8:38year like this, absolutely. Both San Diego State and too
- 8:43late. Yes, absolutely.
- 8:45In some years, not every year, but in some.
- 8:47Years, right? OK, OK, yeah, I'm totally on
- 8:50board with me, too. But this Hall, just because the
- 8:53Sunbelt Conference champion finished higher than Duke.
- 8:56OK, now the fact that James Madison is in here, again, no
- 9:00disrespect to they'll actually disrespect you.
- 9:02They don't belong. OK.
- 9:04I mean, this is just, you know, I understand we want the best
- 9:0912, but if you really look at I'll throw another thing out
- 9:12there that doesn't hold a lot of water.
- 9:13But do we get the best 68 in the NCAA tournament?
- 9:16No, we get we get the MIAC conference tournament champion
- 9:20and the Mac whatever, right? We don't get the best in the NFL
- 9:23because every division winner gets a stupid whole.
- 9:26Playoff game, maybe 7 of the right.
- 9:29Yeah, NFC South this year, you know, that could be an 800, an 8
- 9:32and eight team or whatever 9 and 8, whatever it is and you lose
- 9:35somebody else out. But again, that's why I don't
- 9:38have a problem with one, you know, AQ from, from a, from a
- 9:44group of five, but you can't have two.
- 9:46You just absolutely can't have two in there because that does
- 9:49that does tremendously water down the field.
- 9:52You're going to punish the Big 12 runner up for playing in the
- 9:56conference game, but you're not going to punish the SEC runner
- 9:59up for you just got to get on the same page you.
- 10:02Remember, something has to happen.
- 10:04Yeah. And, you know, and if we go to
- 10:0516, does it help It probably. But you know, then we would be
- 10:10arguing about Texas and Vanderbilt and BYU and, you
- 10:14know, whoever is a little bit further down the list, OK.
- 10:19And that's fine. Wherever you put the cut off,
- 10:21you're going to make an argument.
- 10:22But, and I'm not a proponent to go to 16, I'm really not.
- 10:27I just think, I think at that point you're starting to have
- 10:29everybody. No, I like the vice personally
- 10:32for the. 4 When you play a 12 game regular season and you play
- 10:37a conference championship game and then you're going to have to
- 10:40play potentially four games to win in that, and that's an NFL
- 10:44schedule, that's 17 games, I think that's too much for
- 10:46college kids. Get.
- 10:47Rid of the conference championship games.
- 10:50See, that's the thing. But again, those make a ton of
- 10:52money. Yeah, so will the playoffs.
- 10:55They're not going to do it. They're just not going to do it.
- 10:57Not not in the next 5-6, seven years.
- 10:59They're not the the SEC is not giving up that game.
- 11:02The Big 10 is not giving up that game.
- 11:04The ACC might if you look at what you.
- 11:07Said I did, Charlotte, by the way, I was, I was, I was
- 11:11rooting. I was on the same page as Manny
- 11:13Diaz when he was politicking for Duke to get in.
- 11:16Yeah, I know he's making. You're making a lot of sense.
- 11:19Well, he he stated facts, I'll put it that way.
- 11:22Did it make much sense? No.
- 11:23But it was fact. It was Who was James Madison?
- 11:25He told me a Power Four team that James Madison beat.
- 11:28You can't. No.
- 11:29Right. Yeah.
- 11:30But you know, the problem is being that you lost to Illinois,
- 11:33you lost to UConn, you lost to Georgia Tech, you lost to
- 11:36Virginia. Every good team you played, you
- 11:38got beat, except until you beat Virginia here.
- 11:41So, I mean, but it's he he stated facts.
- 11:44I don't think he had a point because you can't get in with
- 11:46five losses. No, he didn't, and I knew that
- 11:48he was. He was pissing into the wind,
- 11:50but I was hoping that somehow. It was hilarious.
- 11:53If you're, if you're sitting on a jury, you're like, well, you
- 11:55know, maybe. Yeah, yeah.
- 11:58What did you think of the Big 10 Championship game, Bama?
- 12:01Were you surprised? No, I think I picked Indiana.
- 12:04I mean, you know, on our show, on our segment on.
- 12:07Friday, by the way, Speaking of picking, we're going to correct
- 12:10our year's work on February on Friday, rather, because we got
- 12:15Army, Navy and we do have a bowl game on Saturday night.
- 12:18We do. Boise and Washington will
- 12:20collide. It's survived.
- 12:22What's the name of that thing? Is that the LA Bowl?
- 12:24The LA Bowl? Yeah.
- 12:24The LA Bowl, I think, yeah. So they are correct.
- 12:27I mean, you don't talk about bowl games, man.
- 12:30These these little minor bowls are, I mean, you got Appalachian
- 12:34State and Georgia Southern here in the Birmingham Bowl.
- 12:36How many tickets you think that's gonna?
- 12:38Sell dozens. None.
- 12:40Not for me. Look, there's some pretty good
- 12:43ones you eat when you look out there.
- 12:45I like Vanderbilt in Iowa. I mean, that's a good, that's a
- 12:48good game. Illinois, Tennessee is good.
- 12:51I think that's a fun one. Depending on who plays the Pavi
- 12:55plays. It's a good game.
- 12:56If he doesn't, nobody's going to.
- 12:57Watch. Yeah.
- 12:58What are we hearing, Trent? Along those lines, have you
- 13:00heard anything from since the matchup's been announced
- 13:02regarding? I would be absolutely
- 13:05dumbfounded if he doesn't play. Right.
- 13:06He's not going to the NFL. No, he's not.
- 13:09He's not a That's the last chance.
- 13:10Come back and play college. Again.
- 13:12Yeah, it does. Yeah.
- 13:12Go be. I hope he gets chance.
- 13:15Come on to watch. Yeah, if you want to take an
- 13:21anti Notre Dame approach, you're a Clark who said, listen, we're
- 13:24not blaming anybody. We didn't want enough.
- 13:26Yeah, you know, we'd have won one more game.
- 13:27We'd have been in taken care of itself.
- 13:29What I will say about the anti Notre Dame I am so I am I think
- 13:34it's great that the AD what's his name Bivaqua is how you say
- 13:36his name Bivaqua yeah Bivaqua he came out on Dan Patrick show
- 13:40today and ripped the ACC and rightly so.
- 13:44I remember about a month ago, boys, bringing this up with both
- 13:46of you on either a Monday or Friday segment asking you if you
- 13:49you'd seen the tweet from the ACC where they backed Miami at
- 13:54the expense of Notre Dame. And they apparently that just
- 13:58just the beginning, over the last three or four days, the ACC
- 14:02Network on repeat replayed the Miami Notre Dame game.
- 14:07I mean, what are you doing? What are you doing well?
- 14:11He's right to RIP them, right? Because, I mean, if you took
- 14:13Notre Dame, you used to, if Notre Dame just took the ball.
- 14:17And went home as they should. Now I would.
- 14:19As they should, especially in football.
- 14:22Who I mean, that's that is I don't know how many teams are in
- 14:25that stupid conference now. 1717, you know, probably, yeah,
- 14:29probably what, 13 of them. That's their marquee game is to
- 14:32play on the game when they go to Wake Forest or or, you know,
- 14:35Syracuse or, you know, whoever, right?
- 14:38That's their that's their gal. Oh my God, don't get me started.
- 14:42You know, that's that's their marquee game, right?
- 14:44So you pull that out and see how much that, yeah, I, I agree with
- 14:47him on that. I do, I, I, I wouldn't like that
- 14:50if I were their business partner.
- 14:52But, you know, again, during the conference, I mean, there's, you
- 14:57know, there's that argument too, but I don't think that's going
- 14:59to happen either. There's just so much, there's so
- 15:01many, you know, if, if one thing had happened even like, again,
- 15:06go by, if Texas had beaten Florida, this whole, I think
- 15:09Alabama's out at that point. I think you're going to put
- 15:11Texas and OU in, but it didn't happen.
- 15:15And there's just so many pieces you can go back to and you know,
- 15:17the what if the what if the what if that gets everybody in.
- 15:20But you know, if Notre Dame had kicked a field goal against in
- 15:23them or whatever, you know, against Miami and held them on
- 15:26the last drive. And I think I'll tell you
- 15:28another shame is I think I don't know if Jeremiah Love is a, it's
- 15:32got any more eligibility left, but if not, it's a shame that
- 15:35we're not going to see him. Play.
- 15:36He's done, yeah, he'll obviously he's done.
- 15:39Yeah, but I think he would have been done if they would have,
- 15:41you know, gone to whatever. Where where were they going?
- 15:44Was it the Alamo? I don't know where they were
- 15:46going, but whatever ball they were going through, he wasn't
- 15:48going to play unless it was the playoff.
- 15:50Yeah, I agree. And and it's it's a shame
- 15:53because that kid is, I mean, he's, he's, he's as good as I
- 15:56mean, I think he's a little better than Gentie was last
- 15:59year, like Gentie with boys. I think his kids got a little
- 16:02bit more, probably a little bit better in the pros.
- 16:04But you know, look, it happens. You know, these kids, you know,
- 16:07they use up their eligibility and everything else, But I mean,
- 16:10these balls, these balls are in trouble, man, these secondary
- 16:12balls. And that that again, that is
- 16:14ESPN, you know, paying a bunch of money for the exchange.
- 16:17Now, I think the only thing that's going to help, and we
- 16:20talked about this, I think in years past, the thing that's
- 16:22going to help these, you know, maybe stay a little bit relevant
- 16:27in terms of ratings or numbers is going to be the gambling
- 16:29aspect, right? People are going to bet on
- 16:31Georgia Southern and Appalachian State.
- 16:33Okay, I'm right Trent people are going to bet on it so that
- 16:39that'll help but it's just I don't know we knew we were going
- 16:42to be here I'm I'm I am surprised I I will be I will
- 16:46stay I was shocked when I saw Bama come up at 9:00.
- 16:49I can like wow, they didn't even move.
- 16:51Didn't. See Heather Dennich's face?
- 16:53Did you see her reaction? They had a camera on her.
- 16:56Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:57She's getting ripped for it, too.
- 16:58I don't know why. Yeah. 15 of the last 16
- 17:02conference champion losers has fallen in the rankings.
- 17:04The one that hasn't? Alabama Crimson Tide.
- 17:08Different. Different rules for the Crimson
- 17:11Tide, but that's our reality. BMI want to throw this by you
- 17:14because I, I heard this from somebody that was at the SEC
- 17:16championship game, he said. Everyone was good.
- 17:19It was good, but it's not like it was in the past.
- 17:22No. Big 10 championship game number
- 17:24one verse #2 both teams knew they were getting buys.
- 17:29And I heard more clamoring than I ever had before from SEC
- 17:31people saying, you know what, maybe 16 is not a bad thing.
- 17:35Maybe 24 is not a bad thing. With the conference
- 17:38championships, I know there's money, but there's also money to
- 17:41be had in a playoff bracket. And the amount of negativity we
- 17:45saw from Texas Tech being the four seed, they want to be the
- 17:48five because they wanted to host a game when we get more playoff
- 17:51games on campus. They say that.
- 17:54They absolutely did. People wanted a home playoff
- 17:58game. We saw what it was a year ago
- 18:00and this ability. Now, again, for these top flight
- 18:03teams that are not going to be able to have a home game, bam, I
- 18:05think bracket creep is coming and I think the BLOB and
- 18:08conference championship games are going to go away.
- 18:11And it's going to give hope not just for the Texas and the
- 18:13Vanderbilts and the Notre Dames of the world, but even the next
- 18:16tier, that next tier of team to still have an opportunity,
- 18:19something to play for when they get to November for the
- 18:22betterment of the sport. I think it needs to happen.
- 18:26That something has to be right. I mean, you look at the three
- 18:29home games or three of the, was it three of the four SEC teams,
- 18:32right? Oklahoma's hat.
- 18:33Oklahoma's a static right now. They get Alabama coming to
- 18:36Norman. I mean, old miss gets Tulane,
- 18:39A&M gets Miami or Oregon. You know, they get a home game,
- 18:43but it's basically just a tune up.
- 18:44But by the way, how about Oregon's path?
- 18:46Did you see that? What are you going to do if
- 18:49you're a Duck fan, you got a home game, right?
- 18:51Yeah. If you win, you go to the Orange
- 18:53Bowl. Yeah, two weeks later you go to
- 18:56the Peach Bowl in Atlanta and then if you win that, you're
- 18:58playing in Miami. How the hell are you going to do
- 19:00that? If you're a Oregon fan, you're
- 19:01going to afford 3 cross country trips.
- 19:04Forget about the team flying. I mean, that's bad enough.
- 19:07So the 20th of December, you're going to be in, you're going to
- 19:11be at home. Then you're going to go to the
- 19:12Orange Bowl on the on January 1st, 9 days later you're going
- 19:16to be in Atlanta and then you're going to be back in Miami.
- 19:20Should you get? Should you get to the
- 19:21championship game? Yeah, exactly.
- 19:23Oh boy, all all three what three time zones ahead, every one of
- 19:27them and what 2500 miles, 6 hour flight.
- 19:31I don't know what it is from, you know, Portland to to Miami,
- 19:34but that's that's got to be a pretty long flight.
- 19:37Same with Atlanta and you know, back to Miami again, it they're
- 19:41kind of the only ones with that path because Indiana, Indiana or
- 19:45the Rose Bowl. And if they win that they go to,
- 19:49you know, they go to Atlanta, they have that same path.
- 19:51Georgia gets the Sugar Bowl, Ohio State gets the cotton and
- 19:56then those two would play in in the in the Fiesta.
- 19:59So I mean, I don't know it's and I understand you have to.
- 20:05You have to do preset. No, you don't get away with
- 20:10them. Do away.
- 20:11I can't wait for the NFC Championship game between the
- 20:13Rams and the Packers played in flipping Tampa Bay.
- 20:15No, knock it off. Play these games on campus, kill
- 20:19the Bulls, and if they all go away, so be it.
- 20:22So who plays in the cotton? Bowl, I don't care.
- 20:23Nobody get rid of them. You can.
- 20:26Why, why, why can't we have these games on campus?
- 20:30I would be so much better than having to have Oregon fly to the
- 20:33other side of the country 3 consecutive ways.
- 20:35It's stupid. It's absolutely idiotic.
- 20:37Play these games on campus. What about northern schools?
- 20:41What about Wisconsin? Great.
- 20:42Iowa State, did you enjoy? Watching Buffalo and Cincinnati
- 20:45in the snow. Yesterday I loved every minute
- 20:46of it. Thank you.
- 20:47Yes. Well, this if you were to move
- 20:51the Fiesta Bowl up one week and and let Oregon play in that
- 20:55should they win, right, that would have made a little more
- 20:58sense. But I, I am here, I am OK with
- 21:02with the current setup or if you go to 16 or whatever it is the
- 21:05play the first two rounds on campus, right?
- 21:07You can do the semifinals fine. That's two trips, OK and you
- 21:11know, make it then make it the Rose Bowl and or or whatever
- 21:15however you want to do it. You'll make the Fiesta, make a
- 21:17West Coast game one of them. But I just think it's crazy to
- 21:20ask Oregon fans to to travel that.
- 21:23And again, what's the team going to do, right?
- 21:25If I'm just guessing, it's just a guess, right?
- 21:29If they get to Miami, if they get to Miami for the Orange
- 21:32Bowl, are they going to fly all the way back home and then back
- 21:35to Atlanta? Are they going to try to stay
- 21:37out there? Probably stay out.
- 21:38There I would stay, yeah. I would too.
- 21:39And then what are you going to do if you win that you're going
- 21:41to stay out there another 10 days, right?
- 21:43Well, these guys are students. They got to go to class, right?
- 21:46Yeah, right. Hey, brother, we're out of time,
- 21:48buddy. We'll talk on Friday.
- 21:49We'll correct our work from the preseason.
- 21:51We'll take a look at Army, Navy, which has a chance to be really
- 21:53good game, and then Boise State and Washington.
- 21:57Washington will be part of it as well.
- 21:59Yeah, Good stuff, buddy. We'll talk to you Friday.
- 22:01Thanks, Emma. Take care guys, always enjoy it.
- 22:03Thanks. Good to talk to you, Bama, Bob,
- 22:05Trent and I around college football.
- 22:06Scott Docman from The Athletic is next.
- 22:08Miller and Condon talking sports with you on Des Moines sports
- 22:12Station One O 6.3 KX&O. I'm Hillary Cotton, just passed
- 22:231:30 on a Monday off the bench, top of the hour.
- 22:28Mr. Monday night to come. Before that, however, let's get
- 22:30our brother and Scott Docman in here.
- 22:32He covers college football for the Athletic.
- 22:35He was in Indianapolis for the Big 10 championship game and he
- 22:39joins us. What a crazy, crazy last few
- 22:42days in college football in our state and throughout the college
- 22:46football landscape with the playoff rankings and the 12
- 22:49teams that heard their name called this past weekend.
- 22:52And Scott joins us. Crazy weekend.
- 22:54Scott Dockerman, your thoughts? Where do you want me to begin?
- 22:58You want me to begin local or national or they're about?
- 23:01Where? Take a swing and we'll follow
- 23:03your lead. How about that?
- 23:04OK, Well it it is interesting. I mean, whenever you get the
- 23:09playoff involved and it doesn't matter if it was the old BCS
- 23:12where you had two teams and Auburn gets left out, is it
- 23:15undefeated? Or if you're talking about the
- 23:17fourteen playoff and TCU and Baylor get left out or are you
- 23:20talking about this and Notre Dame gets booted, It's always
- 23:23going to be crazy. And it will when it's 16 teams
- 23:26and it will when it's 24 and it will on on up.
- 23:29So, so I, I would say to start off by just saying that when you
- 23:34came down the stretch, the committee had an unenviable task
- 23:39because Miami's clearly the best team in the ACC, but it's not
- 23:42the champion. So then therefore it had to ruin
- 23:47somebody's day and season between Alabama, among Alabama,
- 23:50Miami and Notre Dame. And all of them were semi
- 23:54existential when you think about it, which is Miami, you're
- 23:58leaving out the AC CS best team or ACC in general.
- 24:03And not only that, but you did it two years ago out of the 14
- 24:06playoffs with the Florida State, then you know, with Notre Dame,
- 24:10they, they've proven themselves all year outside of those two
- 24:14losses that they are as good as any of the top four or five
- 24:17teams in the country. And then Alabama, if you believe
- 24:20them out, which I think they are the weakest of the three teams
- 24:23on paper, but they already were voted by the committee as being
- 24:28#9 going into a conference championship weekend.
- 24:31And if you take them, if you allow that loss to boot them
- 24:35from 12 team playoff, they're no longer going to play 12 T
- 24:40playoffs in the future. So I just think this is or I
- 24:43mean, a conference championship games, I'm sorry.
- 24:45And and so there was really no way to win.
- 24:48And so I think that's why we had the result that we did.
- 24:51And then Notre Dame said, well, we're just going to take our
- 24:53golden helmets and and go home for the winter.
- 24:56Very disappointing, but not a surprise.
- 24:58They've done that in the past and they'll do it here.
- 25:00Different circumstances missing in the playoff with Notre Dame.
- 25:03Does it change anything? Does it push him closer to
- 25:07joining a conference or does it push him further away and
- 25:09digging in their heels, something that they're very good
- 25:11at, digging their heels in even more about maintaining their
- 25:14independence. When you look at Notre Dame and
- 25:16kind of the future going forward, what do you think it
- 25:18says about the Irish? Well, then they are they put
- 25:22themselves into this position of special status, special favored
- 25:26nation status, if you will. You know, where they, they have
- 25:29all the benefits of being independent without any of the,
- 25:32the issues of, you know, that conferences and, you know, have,
- 25:37you know, I mean, they can do whatever they want.
- 25:38And so like they didn't have to pay a $500,000 fine if to, you
- 25:43know, back out of a bowl game, they just decided to back out
- 25:46and, and, and I think find the ACC.
- 25:49You know, how much more is it worth to you to have this
- 25:51relationship with them? Certainly in the other sports,
- 25:54you know, it can't be that valuable and basketball and
- 25:57everything like that. And so when you're talking
- 25:59about, you know, football is is important and they've always
- 26:04wanted them to be in football, but you're playing them five
- 26:07games, they're hurting you. And then this weekend, the troll
- 26:10job that the ACC Network did was, was kind of hilarious, you
- 26:15know, you know, to, to really put it on.
- 26:17So I mean, at some point you just wonder, I mean, are they
- 26:20going to, you know, are they, are they going to end up, you
- 26:25know, saying, you know, we're just going to sever this, this
- 26:27bond this, or are we going to go ahead and and then join another
- 26:32con, join the big 10 or somebody like that?
- 26:34Or are they going to just say, you know what, we're just going
- 26:36to do it independently. But I think that would be kind
- 26:38of a, you know, off in themselves a little bit as a as
- 26:41a program because if you end up not having any bonds with any
- 26:46conferences, your strength, the schedule is going to be really
- 26:48bad. Yeah, I mean, I was just blown
- 26:50away the ACC willing to go down that path both with their
- 26:53network and their social media over the last couple or more
- 26:56than a couple of weeks, making very clear which side they were
- 26:58on. That was Miami side at the
- 27:00expense of Notre Dame. Well, let's move the College
- 27:02Football Playoff to the side for a second Doc and and go.
- 27:06He wrote a good piece on Iowa State and their fan base and
- 27:08what they have to go through and what it's like to be a Cyclone
- 27:10fan. I thought I read most of your
- 27:12comments or the comments in this after your pieces.
- 27:15I normally do. This was very well received, I
- 27:18think by most everybody, which is rare, as you very well know.
- 27:22So just a whole Matt Campbell to Penn State now where this leaves
- 27:26Iowa State going forward, your thoughts and what transpired in
- 27:29Ames beginning, you know, on Friday when the announcement
- 27:32became official. Yeah, I, I think more than
- 27:36anything I felt kind of sad. It wasn't that, that, you know,
- 27:41sometimes you get that anger feeling that, you know, he said
- 27:45lover type. And I don't feel that way about
- 27:47this. This was one that I think
- 27:49everybody kind of knew at some point was going to happen,
- 27:51whether it was the NFL or is, you know, Ohio State or
- 27:54Michigan. He's from in that part of the
- 27:56world. And for this one to end up this
- 27:58way, it makes sense. But that doesn't make it any
- 28:01easier. And I think that at some point,
- 28:04I think most of at least the Iowa State fans I've spoken with
- 28:09since this all took place, it's just they, you know, it is kind
- 28:12of that that, you know, this sucks and this happens, but
- 28:15they're not, you know, they don't really hate math for it
- 28:18and they shouldn't. And I think at some point
- 28:20there's going to it's going to be a relationship.
- 28:22I would kind of a lot like Lude Olson with Iowa fans after
- 28:27leaving and going to Arizona, there was some burp for a while
- 28:30that kind of subsided. And then by the end, you know,
- 28:33they could really get past everything and and feel special
- 28:37and and they should. I mean, Matt Campbell did it
- 28:39was, you know, the best coach they've ever had in any sport.
- 28:42I mean, I know wrestling, they won titles and everything, but
- 28:45there's really nothing that, you know, comparative that he was
- 28:48able to do. And and I think you saw that
- 28:50emotion out of Jamie Pollard on Friday night and then even today
- 28:54I've been watching Matt's press conference.
- 28:56He got emotional several times, especially when he talked about
- 28:59Iowa State. So it mattered to him.
- 29:01And and so, you know, we're now going forward.
- 29:04I think that's a really good hire.
- 29:05Jimmy Rogers did a nice job at a very short period of time at
- 29:09South Dakota State as a head coach.
- 29:10And then this year that was not easy.
- 29:12I mean, right now Washington State is in a, you know,
- 29:16purgatory of of as a program and to go to Virginia, to go to Wash
- 29:22Old Miss and the way they did, I thought that he did, he did a
- 29:26nice job of galvanizing everybody out there.
- 29:28So I don't think this is going to be, you know, depending on
- 29:31what happens with the players, it may be a step, slight step
- 29:35down, but I don't think this is just going to be a collapse or
- 29:38anything. Speaking of the players, the
- 29:40players made the decision not to play in a bowl game.
- 29:43Them K State both opted out, were hit by fines by the Big 12.
- 29:47What do you read into that, doc? Is it the concern about just the
- 29:51number of players that'll be available and what the transfer
- 29:53portal likely is going to look like for Iowa State?
- 29:55Or is there something deep in there with Iowa State deciding
- 29:58not to play in this bowl game? Yeah, from from what I gathered
- 30:02and, and yesterday when I was juggling about 15 things and
- 30:05this was among them and, and it was just AII that that there are
- 30:11there are a lot of players that are in positions that are pretty
- 30:14injured. If the coaches were there, I'm
- 30:16sure they would play or at least the the other ones would play.
- 30:19But I think that there were a lot of her players as well and
- 30:22really wanting to determine what's their future status and,
- 30:26and, and so that, you know, they all voted against it.
- 30:29And when you when they vote against it, then you just
- 30:32really, if you push him to play that way, it doesn't do anybody
- 30:35any good. And, and I know the fine 500K
- 30:38for both Kansas State and Iowa State.
- 30:40That's that's fair because you have, you know, contracts with
- 30:45these bowls and these bowls are really excited.
- 30:46I talked to Scott Lightman on Saturday night, who's the head
- 30:50of PR with the the insight bowl or being the rate bowl and out.
- 30:57And he was so excited about Minnesota, Iowa State, because
- 31:01that's what was going to happen. And he thought that even though
- 31:04the Ireland factor and even though, you know, the people
- 31:07went there and even though Matt Campbell was leaving, he
- 31:10thought, you know, it's still going to be a good turn out.
- 31:12We've got a lot of Iowa State fans here.
- 31:14I think people are really excited.
- 31:15And so I imagine that there was some heartbreak with this one.
- 31:18And, and it's unfortunate, it's unfair, but it is kind of a
- 31:21product of the system now. Whenever, when people leave,
- 31:24it's not like it was before. We're all right over the
- 31:26coordinators, the the interim head coach until he leaves.
- 31:30You know, now everything's kind of scattered to the wind.
- 31:33Last thing for me, Doc, you were in Indianapolis covering the Big
- 31:3610 championship. Indiana got the better of of
- 31:38Ohio State terrific football game.
- 31:41This signeti I I don't know if it can be duplicated if you can
- 31:44just take this blueprint and now now that's the way to to do it
- 31:48If you want to get that success as quickly as he did.
- 31:51I don't believe it can be done. But it was of all places,
- 31:54Bloomington IN that basketball factory for so many decades has
- 31:58become a football school. What did what were your
- 32:00takeaways on the game itself? From what I saw Doc through my
- 32:05television set, this was not a fluke.
- 32:08It's not a fluke at all. I mean, Indiana is a quality
- 32:12football program and they can go toe to toe.
- 32:14And that's always the thing you kind of worry about, you know,
- 32:17concerned about for a team like Indiana.
- 32:20KU for a little while with Mark Mangino was kind of the same way
- 32:23as you start to wonder, OK, can they go?
- 32:25Can they physically match up along the line of scrimmage both
- 32:28sides against a team like Ohio State?
- 32:31And they could. They actually dominated that
- 32:33game on defense to be able to hold them.
- 32:36I think it was 58 yards rushing to get 9 tackles for loss.
- 32:40They were really impactful on that end of the on that side of
- 32:45the ball and they have been all year.
- 32:46This was not a one time thing wasn't special for Ohio State.
- 32:49It was it's what they have done and they are really good at it.
- 32:53And I think, you know, I, I see them as the two best teams in
- 32:57the country. I think maybe Georgia and Texas
- 33:00Tech, possibly Oregon might be in that ballpark.
- 33:02I thought Notre Dame definitely was in that discussion, but it
- 33:07wouldn't shock me at all if they play again.
- 33:09I I think that, you know, Ohio State last year galvanized, you
- 33:13know, use that loss to Michigan to kind of fuel them and and in
- 33:17some ways, maybe they they get their little bit of their
- 33:20comeuppance here. And because when I participated
- 33:24in a news conference with Ryan Day, a lot of what he had to say
- 33:27about this game was, well, we can secure the number one seed
- 33:30overall. And it wasn't as much about the
- 33:32Big 10 championship. Whereas Indiana, I mean, Indiana
- 33:36won the Big 10. I never would have dreamed this
- 33:39would have happened. I mean, this is like, it's like
- 33:41if KU did it, you know, in the old Big 12.
- 33:44It's just something you don't expect.
- 33:47Last thing for me, Doc, the TV show, a lot of pushback.
- 33:51Finally, now I've been screwed about this thing.
- 33:53Yes, the Tuesday TV show on ESPNI saw Stuart Mandel has a
- 33:58article up about that and haven't had a chance to crack
- 34:00into it. It was just posted a moment ago.
- 34:02But there's still what, 6 years left on the contract for the TV
- 34:06show that hurts things. What is the future of this and
- 34:09what what can be done? Because it paints the committee
- 34:12in such a box week after week, year after year.
- 34:15It's a bad look and I think it's bad for college football.
- 34:19I agree with you, Trent, on this.
- 34:20I, I think that ESPN has been the, the focus of this.
- 34:24And then we all read into it so much and what they're trying to
- 34:29do and, and this committee is a voluntary committee.
- 34:31I mean, they ask people to join up.
- 34:33They, they try to evaluate the teams as best as they can and
- 34:37they get painted into this box. And, you know, whether it was
- 34:40the, the Indiana, Alabama, Notre Dame situation.
- 34:43But then you know, like, like last year, ESPN was so over the
- 34:46top and its criticism of Indiana after, especially after losing
- 34:50to Notre Dame and so effusive in its praise for the SEC.
- 34:54It's really it, it really needs to take a step back, need some
- 34:57self-awareness And and that the show I think is interesting and
- 35:01it kind of helps you figure out kind of where things are.
- 35:04But they've got to evaluate this because who's going to want to
- 35:08be on that committee? I mean, it's just it's a you're
- 35:11such a lightning rod and and I don't think ESPN handles it very
- 35:15well. And I mean, I know over the
- 35:17weekend, Booger McFarland really made himself look stupid.
- 35:21Be honest with you when he says that.
- 35:23I when it comes to Ohio State, you know, it's like, you know,
- 35:26there's not a real dominant team in the in the college football.
- 35:29And, you know, in Ohio State, I only seen him once and they were
- 35:32against Texas. And I'm like, if you're going to
- 35:34say you only saw the the defending national champion in
- 35:37top ranked team play once all year, what are you doing?
- 35:40Are you don't go just do the NFL.
- 35:43And I think ESPN has to address that because right now it is
- 35:461000% biased towards the networks that it it towards the
- 35:50leagues that it shows. Scott, document from the
- 35:52Athletic doc Great stuff this weekend and it will be busy this
- 35:55week as well. And if your schedule allows,
- 35:58we'll run you down next Monday. Scott, thanks for jumping on.
- 36:00We appreciate it. Yep.
- 36:02Have a good one guys. Thank.
- 36:03You Scott Dockerman as we checked in on college football
- 36:07overall. 1:45 with Miller and Condon.
- 36:10We'll come back Mr. Monday Night Eagles favoured on the road by
- 36:13two Sound right? Haven't looked at anything all
- 36:17day, but yeah, right in that range.
- 36:19There was 2. Lucas has 2 1/2 he had made that
- 36:22pick on. Friday, does he?
- 36:24Yes, FanDuel still has 2 1/2 soda Circa right now are we?
- 36:29I mean, I had a crappy weekend, yeah.
- 36:32Did you do OK? Well, I didn't miss anything.
- 36:35You, you got them all right. Yeah. 5 and O you went five and
- 36:38O Yes. Thank God, Doug, I needed you to
- 36:42pull your share of the rope. Back over Mount 500.
- 36:45Good for you. That's awesome.
- 36:47So we must still be I'm. I don't care if I beat you or
- 36:49you beat me. We've done that back and forth
- 36:52for. Years we have, yes.
- 36:53I want to beat those knuckleheads from 2:00 to 5:00.
- 36:56Lucas is hot on your heels for first.
- 36:58Place I know he is. So you're a Chargers fan?
- 37:00You're always a Chargers fan? Well, yeah.
- 37:02How much you love a team in your own division, I'll never get.
- 37:04I just want to bet on them when they win.
- 37:07Tomorrow, can we talk about Bears?
- 37:08Packers? Because boy, was that a that.
- 37:09Was a hell of a game. Yeah, it was a hell of a game.
- 37:12Yes, we'll do some NFL tomorrow. Absolutely.
- 37:16Hopefully some baseball tomorrow.

- 38:03Justin Herbert's left hand is broken.
- 38:05You underwent Sergio, but apparently he's going to play
- 38:07Mr. Monday night. My friend Ken Miller says take
- 38:10the Chargers. Mr. Monday night's going to take
- 38:12the Chargers. Yes.
- 38:13Well, the Eagles are broke. I think they are too.
- 38:16But wouldn't this? Be but it would be eagles like.
- 38:18Wouldn't it? Yeah.
- 38:20Go out to LA who they? Where they normally play well in
- 38:22LA. Have a dinner together.
- 38:24They'll be a crap ton of Philly fans there, you know that?
- 38:27Oh for sure. And maybe, just maybe, they look
- 38:30like the team that they should look like.
- 38:32They just look miserable. They do.
- 38:34They're not having fun. We see that so often in
- 38:36basketball, like you can just tell right?
- 38:38We've seen it so many times in our state alone.
- 38:40Sure we're just the chemistry doesn't work.
- 38:43It's so rare in. Football though, well, there's
- 38:44so many more players. Yes.
- 38:46And Kate, you need chemistry. You don't need the same kind of
- 38:48chemistry on a football field. It's just going out there and
- 38:50smash the guy, right and doing your job, those kind of things.
- 38:53It's different in basketball, but this, it looks like one of
- 38:55those basketball teams, like these guys don't like each
- 38:57other. I think you're right.
- 38:59You know, we talked briefly just because it's the unbelievable
- 39:02event. Iowa State men's basketball
- 39:04over. Purdue got overshadowed by their
- 39:07football program. The Hawks came back and beat
- 39:09Maryland. We both said a lot of people
- 39:11said you have to be 1 in one. They crushed Maryland.
- 39:15That was a dominating. It really shot it really well
- 39:17early on. Defense looked outstanding.
- 39:19Do you have any chance Thursday? None.
- 39:23We will talk about that. Obviously building up to
- 39:26Thursday and Wednesday with the women.
- 39:28We're out of here. We're glad you're with us.
- 39:29Miller and Condon weekdays noon to two on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 39:34Network.
