- 0:00My Playful Wife, Episode 9, Closer, written by
- 0:04Mia. What happened after the kitchen, after she
- 0:10held me, after the 20 -minute phone call to Bengaluru,
- 0:13after the thing lifted that she'd been carrying,
- 0:16was not what I had constructed in my imagination.
- 0:21I had imagined a conversation, the long one,
- 0:25the one that had been accruing mass for months.
- 0:29The one in which all the things we had not said
- 0:31would be finally said. I had imagined it as a
- 0:34kind of clearing, painful but ultimately clean,
- 0:37the way surgery is painful but ultimately clean.
- 0:42But Saloni did not work that way. She never had.
- 0:47What she did instead, she made chai. She carried
- 0:51two cups to the living room. She sat down on
- 0:54the couch and put the cups on the table and she
- 0:57looked at me and she said, Come here. Not demanding.
- 1:03Not pleading. Simply, come here. An instruction
- 1:07given by someone who knows exactly what she needs
- 1:10and has decided to ask for it. I came there.
- 1:16You sat beside her. Properly beside her. Not
- 1:20at the careful distance we had sometimes kept,
- 1:22but close, the way we had sat in the first months
- 1:26of our marriage before we had sorted out our
- 1:28habits and settled into the particular spatial
- 1:30arrangement of two people who have decided, without
- 1:34discussing it, how they will occupy a couch together.
- 1:39She picked up the remote and turned on something.
- 1:42A film. Not new, one we had started watching
- 1:46the previous year and abandoned halfway through
- 1:49for reasons I couldn't remember. She turned it
- 1:52on and set the remote down and didn't say anything.
- 1:56We watched. Or, she watched and I sat beside
- 2:01her and the film moved through its story and
- 2:05I became aware, slowly, over the first 20 minutes,
- 2:09of the particular quality of her presence beside
- 2:12me. Not manufactured, not performing comfort,
- 2:16just her, in her own body, in her own flat, watching
- 2:21a film with her husband on an ordinary February
- 2:24evening. My chest, which had been carrying something
- 2:28like a stone since October, felt lighter. This
- 2:33was what she had known to give. Not words. She
- 2:37had understood that words would try to resolve
- 2:39something that was not ready to be resolved.
- 2:41That resolution was not actually what was needed.
- 2:44What was needed was this. The ordinary. The film.
- 2:49The two cups of chai going cold because neither
- 2:52of us was drinking. The city outside doing its
- 2:55thing. The specific weight of two people sitting
- 2:59close enough to feel each other's warmth. Halfway.
- 3:04Through she leaned against me. Her shoulder against
- 3:08my arm. Her head tipping toward my collarbone.
- 3:11Not resting there, just near it. The movement
- 3:15of a woman finding a comfortable position that
- 3:17happened to involve the person beside her. I
- 3:21did not move. The film continued. The chai got
- 3:26cold. The city went on. You're different now,
- 3:32she said. The film had reached the part we'd
- 3:36abandoned before. I could tell from the slight
- 3:39shift in her attention, the sharpening of it,
- 3:42the way she sat forward slightly. She said it
- 3:46without turning, looking at the screen. Yes,
- 3:50I said. From before October. Yes. I've been watching
- 3:58it happen, she said. Watching you change. It's,
- 4:02she paused. Strange, to watch a person become
- 4:06someone else while being the same person. I thought
- 4:11about this, about whether becoming was the right
- 4:14word. I don't think I became someone else, I
- 4:18said. I think I became more of who I was, more
- 4:22completely. She turned and looked at me. The
- 4:27film continued behind her, the screen lighting
- 4:31her face from one side. Is that what it feels
- 4:35like, she said. Yes, I said. More real. More
- 4:41actually myself than I was before. Even the painful
- 4:45parts, especially those, maybe. She absorbed
- 4:50this. October hurt you, she said. Not a question.
- 4:57Yes, I said. It's still hurting you. Less, I
- 5:05said, differently. She turned back to the screen,
- 5:09her shoulders still against my arm. I never wanted
- 5:14that, she said, the hurt. I know, I said. I know
- 5:22you know, I just need to keep saying it. Then
- 5:27keep saying it, I said. A pause. The film. I
- 5:34never wanted to hurt you, she said again. And
- 5:38I chose things that hurt you anyway. And I keep
- 5:42choosing them. And you keep, she stopped. You
- 5:45keep staying. And I don't fully understand it.
- 5:50I'm not sure I fully understand it either, I
- 5:53said. She turned again, looking at me with an
- 5:57expression that was open. Genuinely open. The
- 6:02way she was not often genuinely open, the way
- 6:05the management she brought to everything else
- 6:07dropped away, in very particular moments. Why,
- 6:12she said. Really. Not the answer you've built.
- 6:16Not the framework. Why, actually. I thought about
- 6:21this with the honesty it deserved. Because you're
- 6:25the most real person I know, I said. And I would
- 6:29rather live in a complicated real thing than
- 6:31a simple pretend thing. She looked at me for
- 6:36a long moment. That's brave, she said. Or stupid,
- 6:43I said. Both, she said. The best things usually
- 6:48are. She kissed me. Before that, in the moment
- 6:56just before, she looked at me with an expression
- 6:59I want to try to describe because it was distinct
- 7:01from any I had seen on her face before. It was
- 7:06not desire, though desire was in it. It was not
- 7:10tenderness, though that was in it too. It was
- 7:13something more specific. The look of a person
- 7:15who has been choosing something for months, who
- 7:18has been maintaining a choice under difficult
- 7:20conditions, and who has just been given a piece
- 7:22of evidence that the choice was right. Not the
- 7:25whole evidence. You never get the whole evidence
- 7:28about anything before you're required to commit.
- 7:31But enough. She looked at me the way you look
- 7:35at something that has proved itself. She kissed
- 7:39me. There was no announcement to it. No buildup
- 7:44of tension and release. No choreographed moment.
- 7:48She simply turned further toward me and kissed
- 7:51me, her mouth warm and certain, the familiar
- 7:55knowledge of it mixed now with something I hadn't
- 7:57felt before, or hadn't let myself feel, or hadn't
- 8:02known to reach for. The kiss was brief. When
- 8:06we pulled back, she was looking at me with an
- 8:08expression that was surprised. She had surprised
- 8:11herself. I could see it clearly, the slight widening,
- 8:15the adjusting. What? I said. Nothing, she said.
- 8:22You're, she searched for the word, different.
- 8:25In the way you're here, right now, you're more
- 8:29here than you used to be. I thought about the
- 8:33gym, about Samir's notebook. About the months
- 8:37of paying attention, and the way it had changed
- 8:39not just my mind, but my body's relationship
- 8:42to where it was, the practice of being actually
- 8:45present rather than managing presence from a
- 8:48slight remove. I've been practicing, I said.
- 8:53Practicing what? Being here, I said. Not managing
- 8:59from a distance. Being actually in the room.
- 9:04She looked at me. She looked at me the way you
- 9:07look at something you have known for a long time
- 9:09and have just understood differently. Good different,
- 9:14I said. She smiled, the real one, from the stomach.
- 9:21Yes, she said, good different. Something shifted
- 9:28in our nights after that. I want to say something
- 9:32true about this shift. Something that might be
- 9:35useful to anyone who finds themselves in a complicated
- 9:38version of love and wonders whether it can still
- 9:41be beautiful. It can. I'm going to be careful
- 9:47here about what I share and what I keep because
- 9:50some intimacies belong to the people inside them
- 9:52and don't become more true by being explained.
- 9:55But this much I will say. The nights changed.
- 9:59Not because the circumstances had changed. Piyush
- 10:03was in Bengaluru. The arrangement was what it
- 10:05was. The truth of what I knew had not been erased.
- 10:09None of that had changed. What had changed was
- 10:13me. The months of building the framework. The
- 10:18gym, the notebooks, the phone calls, the practice
- 10:21of looking rather than looking away. The daily
- 10:24choice of the second road. All of that had done
- 10:27something to me that had nothing to do with management
- 10:30or tolerance or being a good person. It had made
- 10:33me more present, more in my body, more capable
- 10:37of receiving what was being given. She came to
- 10:41me differently, not more frequently, not with
- 10:44more elaborateness, with more of herself, not
- 10:48more frequently, not with more elaborateness,
- 10:51with more of herself. With the register I had
- 10:55heard through walls and closed doors, the unguarded
- 10:58one, the one that existed below the professional
- 11:01and the domestic, brought into the room, brought
- 11:04directly to me. I had been her husband for three
- 11:08years. I was receiving, in those nights, a version
- 11:12of her I had not had access to before. Not because
- 11:17she had been withholding. She hadn't. She had
- 11:20given everything she knew how to give. but the
- 11:23giving had been from behind a glass. The glass
- 11:26was thinner now. She came to me warmed. Sometimes
- 11:31I knew from what, sometimes I didn't, and chose
- 11:35not to ask. She came to me with a full heat of
- 11:38herself, with a voice I knew but had only recently
- 11:42been given directly, and I received her with
- 11:45the completeness I had been building toward.
- 11:48Not performing reception, not managing it, but
- 11:51actually open to it. It was the best it had ever
- 11:56been between us. I want to say that carefully
- 11:59because it is a careful thing. The pain and the
- 12:03pleasure were not separate compartments. They
- 12:06were part of the same thing. The grief I had
- 12:09been carrying since October was not incompatible
- 12:12with the love I felt now in those nights. In
- 12:15fact, the grief had deepened the love, had made
- 12:19it more specific, more considered, more chosen.
- 12:22I was not loving Celonie despite what I knew.
- 12:25I was loving her through it. This is what the
- 12:30months of sitting with the second road had produced.
- 12:33Not resolution, not the clean ending of difficulty,
- 12:37but a love that had been made, by difficulty,
- 12:40into something more real. One evening in March,
- 12:47three months after the call to Bengaluru, I came
- 12:50home to find Seloni's phone ringing on the kitchen
- 12:53counter, his name on the screen. She wasn't in
- 12:58the room. I could hear her in the workroom, deep
- 13:02in something. The phone rang. I picked it up
- 13:07and walked to the workroom doorway. I held it
- 13:10out to her. She looked at the screen. She looked
- 13:14at me. Something moved through her expression.
- 13:17Not guilt, not calculation, but something more
- 13:21like the specific feeling of being seen accurately
- 13:25by someone who knows you. Go ahead, I said. She
- 13:31took the phone. She answered it. And she stayed
- 13:36at the workroom table. with the door open, with
- 13:39me able to hear if I chose to hear, and she talked
- 13:42to him for 20 minutes, her voice in the warm
- 13:45register, the private one, not hiding from me,
- 13:49not performing privacy, simply being herself,
- 13:53completely in a room where I was also. This,
- 13:57I thought, was what we were building, not a situation
- 14:00that excluded anyone, not a secret that had to
- 14:04be managed. A life that was big enough to contain
- 14:07what was actually in it. When she hung up, she
- 14:11looked at me. He says hello, she said. Tell him
- 14:17I said it back, I said. She nodded. She went
- 14:22back to her work. I went to make dinner. Outside,
- 14:28March, the particular smell of it, the city warming,
- 14:31the days getting longer. Inside our flat, our
- 14:35life, the ongoing complicated daily work of being
- 14:39two specific people in a specific marriage that
- 14:42had been broken open and put back together as
- 14:45something truer. I made rice. I made dal. I called
- 14:50her when it was ready. She came to the kitchen
- 14:54in her workroom clothes, ink on her hands from
- 14:57her pen, a smear of something on her forearm,
- 15:00and she sat at the table. And she looked at the
- 15:03food, and she looked at me. Thank you, she said.
- 15:08For dinner, I said. She shook her head, her eyes
- 15:13very clear. For all of it, she said. I sat down
- 15:20across from her. Eat, I said. It'll get cold.
- 15:26She picked up her fork. She was smiling. Outside
- 15:31the city. Inside, the two of us, in the version
- 15:35of our marriage that had required losing something
- 15:38to find something better. Not the loss of anything
- 15:41that had been real, but the loss of the comfortable
- 15:44distance from which we had been loving each other
- 15:46without fully knowing it. Closer now. Both of
- 15:50us. We finished the film. Neither of us had been
- 15:56watching it properly since the middle. The story
- 15:59had continued on the screen, but we had been
- 16:01elsewhere, in the specific elsewhere of two people
- 16:05who are sitting together and being conscious
- 16:07of sitting together. When it ended, she turned
- 16:11off the television, and the room was quiet. I
- 16:15want to say something, she said. Say it, I said.
- 16:21She was looking at the dark screen. I've been
- 16:26afraid, she said. That learning to see me would
- 16:29make you want less of me. She paused. That the
- 16:33more you understood, the less you'd want. I looked
- 16:37at the side of her face. The specific quality
- 16:40of her in that moment. Not performing bravery,
- 16:43but exercising it. The difference was visible
- 16:46if you knew what to look for. Has that happened?
- 16:50I said. No, she said. Then that tells you something.
- 16:57I said. She turned and looked at me. It tells
- 17:02me you're either extraordinary or you love me,
- 17:05she said. Probably both, I said. She looked at
- 17:11me for a long moment. In her eyes, in the dim
- 17:15room, something moved, a wave of something that
- 17:19was too large and too real to be named quickly.
- 17:24I love you, she said. She said it the way she
- 17:27said important things. Plainly, without decoration,
- 17:31the way you state a fact that has been true for
- 17:34a long time and is still true and always will
- 17:38be true. I know that probably gets complicated
- 17:41given everything. I know there are other things
- 17:44too, but that one is just, that one is just true.
- 17:49I held what she had said. Three years of marriage
- 17:54and she had said this. regularly, ordinarily,
- 17:58across dinner tables and in the dark. But I had
- 18:02never heard it the way I heard it now, because
- 18:05now I knew what it was being said alongside.
- 18:07Now I understood the full complexity of the person
- 18:11saying it and the full reality of what she was
- 18:14choosing. She loved me, fully, alongside everything
- 18:19else that was also true. I know, I said. I've
- 18:25always known. She looked at me. And I love you,
- 18:31I said. The full version of you, not the simplified
- 18:36one. All of it. She pressed her lips together,
- 18:41held it. Okay, she said finally, very quietly.
- 18:48I reached over and took her hand off her knee
- 18:51and held it. Her hand in mine in the dark room,
- 18:55the city outside, the life we were building out
- 18:59of the complicated real materials of who we actually
- 19:02were. She leaned against me, her head finding
- 19:06its place at my shoulder. We stayed. The city
- 19:12went about its night. The flat held us. The complicated,
- 19:16beautiful, difficult, alive thing that was our
- 19:19marriage continued, as it did every day. To be
- 19:22what it was. Chosen. Real. Worth the cost. She
- 19:33told me something else that night, after the
- 19:36film, after what had happened, after the room
- 19:39had settled into the particular quiet of two
- 19:41people who have been through something and are
- 19:43on the other side of it. She told me about the
- 19:47first time she had understood what she was. Not
- 19:51what she was to Piyush. Not the arrangement.
- 19:54What she was to herself. The kind of person she
- 19:57was. I was 18, she said. Before we'd met. Someone
- 20:03I cared about. I won't say more than that. He
- 20:07left. And I cried for two days and then I got
- 20:10up and I felt she stopped. I felt full. Which
- 20:14was wrong, you'd think. But I felt full. Of everything.
- 20:20Of the grief and the love and the next thing,
- 20:23whatever it was. She was looking at the ceiling.
- 20:28I've always been like this, she said. Too much.
- 20:32Too full. I love too much. I feel too much. I
- 20:38want things at the same time that are contradictory.
- 20:42I know, I said. Most people find that, she stopped
- 20:48again. Overwhelming, I said. Yes. I don't, I
- 20:58said. She turned and looked at me. I know you
- 21:04don't, she said. That's the thing I keep learning
- 21:06about you, that you don't. I held her gaze. It's
- 21:13not a virtue, I said. I'm not noble about it.
- 21:17It's just you're the most alive person I know,
- 21:20and I'd rather be next to alive than comfortable.
- 21:25She looked at me for a long time. Okay, she said
- 21:30finally. Okay. She turned back to the ceiling.
- 21:36We lay in the dark together, her warmth beside
- 21:39me, the city outside. The ongoing life we were
- 21:43building out of the complicated real materials
- 21:46of who we actually were. I kept thinking about
- 21:52what she had said. I've always been like this.
- 21:55Too much. Too full. And what I had said, I'd
- 22:00rather be next to alive than comfortable. These
- 22:03were true things, the truest we had said to each
- 22:05other, and they had the particular quality of
- 22:08true things. They changed the room they were
- 22:11set in. Made it larger. To be continued in episode
