- 0:04Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch 22 podcast with Evan Lazar
- 0:08Speaker 1: and Alex Barth.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I'm Evan Lazar.
- 0:10Speaker 1: I'm Evan Lazar.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I'm Evan Lazar.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Hello, everybody. Nailed it.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Joined, as always, by our Barth.
- 0:14Speaker 1: That's a pitch.
- 0:15Speaker 2: That's a match. No risk it. No risk it. 22.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:21Speaker 3: A lot of work has to go into things like
- 0:22Speaker 3: managing the run game right now, and we'd love to
- 0:24Speaker 3: just see them be able to get some momentum going
- 0:27Speaker 3: felt like they were getting it last week and then
- 0:28Speaker 3: as soon as they do out goes Henderson yeah it's
- 0:31Speaker 3: been two years of this and I've ranted about this
- 0:33Speaker 3: before but and they've had some big runs but what
- 0:36Speaker 3: they're looking at is like down to down consistency in
- 0:39Speaker 3: the run game you know you want to see them
- 0:41Speaker 3: get four or five yards down the field before first contact.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Sometimes it's all of the above. It's it's the offensive
- 0:47Speaker 2: line blocking it's execution. It's fitting the runs to the
- 0:50Speaker 2: style of the running backs and scheme. It's everything. Just
- 0:53Speaker 2: be able to run the ball a little bit as
- 0:55Speaker 2: a counter, as a, something to think about that sort
- 0:58Speaker 2: of thing for the defense would go a long way.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I think for this team. I knew my voice sounded
- 1:09Speaker 2: different last week, but for a second there, I thought
- 1:12Speaker 2: that deuce was me. And I was like, Holy crap.
- 1:14Speaker 2: My voice really sounded different last week. I was like,
- 1:19Speaker 2: is that me? No, it was Mike. Do you? So
- 1:22Speaker 2: filling in for, for Barthie, who's here virtually with us, Alex,
- 1:26Speaker 2: everybody wants to know how, how you doing, how you feeling, buddy?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Hey, uh, I'm, I'm doing better.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I'm doing better. You sound better.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You sound more like yourself.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:37Speaker 1: We'll see. The voice, the last thing to come back,
- 1:40Speaker 1: you might hear me mute myself to cough a couple times.
- 1:42Speaker 1: We'll see how it goes. But starting to turn the
- 1:45Speaker 1: corner for sure.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Everybody is very concerned about you. I'll tell you that.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I've had... more questions about, uh, your wellbeing, uh, in
- 1:55Speaker 2: this last couple of days. And I've had since I've
- 1:58Speaker 2: met you, I would say. So, uh, everyone is, uh,
- 2:02Speaker 2: is worried about you because we know, uh, that you
- 2:05Speaker 2: are an absolute workaholic. So it's very weird to, to
- 2:08Speaker 2: not see you around here. Um, we got to like
- 2:12Speaker 2: kick you out of this place most of the time. So,
- 2:15Speaker 2: It's strange, but good to have you back virtually. I
- 2:20Speaker 2: won't embarrass you anymore. We'll talk about this football game.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I'll just let people know. It's killing me not to
- 2:25Speaker 1: be there.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I know it is.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I'll be back as soon as I can be back.
- 2:29Speaker 2: But we got you virtually, and so that means Catch-22
- 2:33Speaker 2: is whole again. Deuce did a good job filling in
- 2:35Speaker 2: for you, though. He got called up from the bullpen
- 2:38Speaker 2: kind of last minute, too. I kind of sprung it
- 2:40Speaker 2: on him a little bit, and he was able to
- 2:43Speaker 2: pull through for us. So I really do appreciate Mike
- 2:45Speaker 2: doing that. But let's talk about this Jets game. Let's
- 2:48Speaker 2: get into it, because I think that this game in
- 2:51Speaker 2: a lot of ways is more interesting to talk about
- 2:55Speaker 2: than last week, even though last week was more fun,
- 2:58Speaker 2: maybe for some people to watch the Patriots blow out
- 3:01Speaker 2: the Raiders. I thought this game had a little bit
- 3:03Speaker 2: more that Mike Rabel can coach on. I wish in
- 3:07Speaker 2: a lot of ways, both personally and in terms of
- 3:10Speaker 2: the football, that this wasn't a Thursday night football game
- 3:13Speaker 2: coming up this week because I think there was a
- 3:16Speaker 2: lot of things on the film that are easily correctable,
- 3:20Speaker 2: little minor things under the hood that would go a
- 3:24Speaker 2: long way for this Patriots team to clean up moving forward.
- 3:28Speaker 2: that being said, I'm not overly concerned that they didn't
- 3:31Speaker 2: blow out the jets. Alex, I thought the jets came
- 3:34Speaker 2: into this game. Garrett Wilson called it a big expletive game.
- 3:38Speaker 2: You know, like they, they wanted to kind of come
- 3:41Speaker 2: in and compete and send a statement. And I think
- 3:44Speaker 2: that the jets just aren't there yet. Like they just
- 3:46Speaker 2: don't have the personnel to really pull off an upset
- 3:49Speaker 2: over the Patriots. But we'll get into it. I thought
- 3:52Speaker 2: that they coached the game pretty well from a schematic standpoint.
- 3:56Speaker 2: And they did what they had to do to make
- 4:00Speaker 2: this game competitive. So I'll give the Jets a little
- 4:02Speaker 2: tiny bit of flowers. But I don't know. Maybe I'm
- 4:05Speaker 2: being sunshine.com about it. But I'm not overly concerned that
- 4:08Speaker 2: this wasn't another 45 to 17 blowout.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, we know divisional games get like that
- 4:16Speaker 1: from time to time, right? And sometimes you just got
- 4:18Speaker 1: to grind out a win. two teams that are familiar
- 4:20Speaker 1: with each other, that levels playing field a little bit.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So that was as divisional footballs, divisional football gets. And yeah,
- 4:28Speaker 1: it took, you know, the coaching staff pressing some of
- 4:30Speaker 1: the right buttons to get them over the line. I think,
- 4:34Speaker 1: I don't think the game was as close as the
- 4:35Speaker 1: score indicates, but again, that's what these games usually come
- 4:39Speaker 1: down to. I was talking to David Andrews on my
- 4:41Speaker 1: podcast yesterday. How many games during the dynasty era, did
- 4:44Speaker 1: they play the jets and they beat them by like
- 4:46Speaker 1: a score 10 points and, you knew the Patriots were
- 4:49Speaker 1: the better team. That's just, that's how those games go sometimes.
- 4:52Speaker 2: Yeah, no, a hundred percent. I think that people forget
- 4:55Speaker 2: about that from time to time that whether it was
- 4:58Speaker 2: the jets, obviously the dolphins over the years, even Buffalo
- 5:03Speaker 2: at times, the Patriots played some close divisional games when
- 5:07Speaker 2: the Patriots were the Patriots, like when they were the
- 5:09Speaker 2: dynasty and they were humming and winning 14 games a year,
- 5:14Speaker 2: just rolling out of bed and they would play these
- 5:16Speaker 2: random games against, Jets even where they'd win in on
- 5:20Speaker 2: a field goal or a blocked field goal. Remember Chris Jones?
- 5:23Speaker 2: We saw that the other day for the first time
- 5:26Speaker 2: in a while, like that, that Patriots team was so
- 5:28Speaker 2: much better than that Jets team. And they still needed
- 5:31Speaker 2: to block a field goal at the end of regulation
- 5:34Speaker 2: to win the football game. So that's divisional football. It
- 5:36Speaker 2: can get a little bit wonky. Sometimes this happens. I
- 5:40Speaker 2: want to get into the good and the bad and
- 5:41Speaker 2: the stuff that gets you beat. There's a big overarching theme, though,
- 5:46Speaker 2: or umbrella over the Patriots right now. Rain cloud, I
- 5:49Speaker 2: should really call it about these injuries and the injuries
- 5:53Speaker 2: have started to really pile up tomorrow's show. We're going
- 5:57Speaker 2: to preview the Bears game and I want to talk
- 5:59Speaker 2: about replacing the players with the injuries. So we won't
- 6:03Speaker 2: go too deep into that today. We'll save that for tomorrow.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But this is getting kind of crazy for the Patriots.
- 6:11Speaker 2: They just put Romeo Dobbs. on injured reserve, he'll miss
- 6:14Speaker 2: at least four games. Sounds like we're based off the
- 6:17Speaker 2: reporting that maybe he could be back after the bi-week,
- 6:20Speaker 2: you know, kind of like a six week injury. It
- 6:22Speaker 2: sounds like for Romeo Dobbs and then three offensive linemen
- 6:27Speaker 2: go down, uh, in the game as well. Uh, Morgan
- 6:30Speaker 2: Moses is a trooper. Like he might, he might play
- 6:33Speaker 2: through it, uh, on Thursday night, but Ben Brown and
- 6:36Speaker 2: Elijah Vera Tucker would have been DNPs. if they had
- 6:39Speaker 2: had a full practice yesterday, this is becoming, and not,
- 6:43Speaker 2: it was already a problem, but this is becoming really
- 6:46Speaker 2: like one of those seasons, Alex, where you, you might
- 6:49Speaker 2: be limping here the rest of the way.
- 6:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, it's the opposite of last season, right? Last
- 6:56Speaker 1: season was such an extreme to one end that they,
- 7:00Speaker 1: they basically had this across the board, but especially on
- 7:03Speaker 1: the offensive line, they're basically the same five guys the
- 7:05Speaker 1: whole season. They didn't really have to change anything. And
- 7:07Speaker 1: that's so rare. You know, this is another extreme. If
- 7:12Speaker 1: they lost one more guy, they would have had to
- 7:13Speaker 1: either go to who? Cameron Latu or Corey Durden or
- 7:17Speaker 1: who the heck knows. So, getting both. But, yeah, this
- 7:23Speaker 1: is in credit to Doug Maroney. He had those guys
- 7:25Speaker 1: ready to go, you know, for that spot start. Now
- 7:29Speaker 1: they'll have a few more days to prepare. It's not ideal,
- 7:31Speaker 1: but especially Matt Pryor just got here, what, two, three
- 7:34Speaker 1: weeks ago?
- 7:35Speaker 4: Yep.
- 7:35Speaker 1: So, really a test. that they haven't seen in some
- 7:39Speaker 1: time of the offensive line.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Yeah, especially on the interior. They're going to be down.
- 7:44Speaker 2: to their fourth right guard. I think it is in
- 7:47Speaker 2: their second left guard, but obviously Ben Brown. So really
- 7:51Speaker 2: their third left guard too, because Ben Brown was their
- 7:54Speaker 2: backup left guard. As we found out on Sunday, he
- 7:57Speaker 2: flipped over and they put prior in the game, Van
- 8:00Speaker 2: Roten's on injured reserve, Mike on when he was on
- 8:02Speaker 2: injured reserve. Uh, this interior offensive line, uh, is, is a, uh,
- 8:08Speaker 2: an area where this team is, uh, is really thin
- 8:10Speaker 2: right now. And it's, really nothing you can do about it.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Like this guy's going down with injuries. Uh, you hope
- 8:16Speaker 2: that Ben Brown and Vera Tucker not being placed on
- 8:19Speaker 2: injured reserve right away is an indication that maybe they
- 8:23Speaker 2: avoided a major injury and could come back at some point, uh,
- 8:27Speaker 2: not too long from now. Uh, we talked about this
- 8:29Speaker 2: last week though. Uh, they also have this numbers game
- 8:32Speaker 2: that they're going to have to worry about with bringing
- 8:34Speaker 2: these guys back from injured reserve. As well. So you,
- 8:37Speaker 2: even if those guys have multi-week injuries, you kind of
- 8:41Speaker 2: have to pick and choose, you know, which guys are
- 8:43Speaker 2: you going to put on injured reserve? Cause you can't
- 8:45Speaker 2: bring them all back.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:47Speaker 1: And it's going to be something that they're going to
- 8:50Speaker 1: have to manage for the rest of the season. And
- 8:52Speaker 1: we were texting about this yesterday and excuse me, they
- 8:55Speaker 1: have five spots left. Because I think last week we
- 8:58Speaker 1: said Schooler didn't count, and then you found out he
- 9:00Speaker 1: did count.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Yeah, so he got some confirmation on that. Schooler does
- 9:03Speaker 2: count because he's on NFI. I can't explain why they
- 9:07Speaker 2: treat PUP and NFI differently in this case. I think
- 9:10Speaker 2: it has something to do with salary and pay and
- 9:13Speaker 2: stuff like that, because technically, if a player is on NFI,
- 9:16Speaker 2: I don't think the team has to pay that guy.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Cause it's a non football injury. So it's something to do,
- 9:21Speaker 2: I think with, with, uh, with payment as to why
- 9:24Speaker 2: this is a different process, but NFI players do count
- 9:28Speaker 2: towards the return minimum. If Harold Landry gets back in his, uh,
- 9:33Speaker 2: comes off PUP, he does not count. So they have
- 9:37Speaker 2: used three. They've used Marcus Bryant, AJ Brown, uh, And now, uh,
- 9:42Speaker 2: Brendan schooler. So they have five more to go. If
- 9:45Speaker 2: they were to make the playoffs, they would get an
- 9:47Speaker 2: additional two, uh, in the post season. So that is
- 9:51Speaker 2: in their back pocket. Like if some of these guys
- 9:53Speaker 2: have longer term injuries, like maybe you, you can save those,
- 9:57Speaker 2: for potentially bringing them back in January. But we're getting
- 10:00Speaker 2: a little ahead of ourselves, obviously, with worrying about the playoffs. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So this is something they're going to have to manage
- 10:07Speaker 1: the rest of the year. And that's why, like when
- 10:08Speaker 1: they put Romeo Dobbs on IR, it's eye opening because,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, if a guy is going to miss right
- 10:14Speaker 1: around that four week mark, you probably just better off
- 10:17Speaker 1: eating the roster space. I would think versus you're going
- 10:19Speaker 1: to use IR for the guys that are out longer
- 10:22Speaker 1: term where you're not going to get that roster spot
- 10:24Speaker 1: back as quickly. So it feels like it's got to
- 10:27Speaker 1: be a little more serious now for got to go
- 10:29Speaker 1: on IR.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yep, I agree, and that was my first correction or
- 10:34Speaker 2: mea culpa I'm going to do today. I have another
- 10:36Speaker 2: one that's more football-related, but I just assumed that Brendan
- 10:40Speaker 2: Schooler didn't count because it was a different list, and
- 10:43Speaker 2: that was a bad assumption. So that's my bad. He
- 10:46Speaker 2: does count. Thanks to Mike Reese, who tipped me off
- 10:50Speaker 2: to that first, and then I was like, oh, wait
- 10:51Speaker 2: a second, I better... I better confirm it. I better
- 10:54Speaker 2: look into this because I was unaware of that. All right,
- 10:57Speaker 2: let's get into the, the good and the bad and
- 10:59Speaker 2: the stuff gets you beat. Uh, there are, there was
- 11:01Speaker 2: plenty of good, uh, from this game, uh, that I
- 11:04Speaker 2: want to highlight, but I think the, the stuff, uh,
- 11:07Speaker 2: in the bads, especially the AJ Brown stuff is what
- 11:10Speaker 2: everybody is kind of like the lead story right now.
- 11:12Speaker 2: But let's start with the goods. Uh, I thought, uh, again,
- 11:16Speaker 2: third week in a row, uh, Uh, Drake may played
- 11:19Speaker 2: a really good football game on Sunday and, uh, it
- 11:22Speaker 2: started maybe a little bit slower, uh, than, than it
- 11:25Speaker 2: had the previous couple of weeks. Uh, but I thought
- 11:28Speaker 2: that he was, uh, again, uh, more than a net
- 11:32Speaker 2: positive in this game. Uh, you know, just from the
- 11:35Speaker 2: numbers standpoint, uh, he, he was, uh, had an 89.2
- 11:39Speaker 2: QBR in this game, uh, plus 0.39 EPA per drop back,
- 11:43Speaker 2: which are both, you know, elite level efficiency, uh, From
- 11:46Speaker 2: the quarterback standpoint, I had him with 12 plus plays,
- 11:49Speaker 2: six minuses, zero turnover where the plays again this week,
- 11:53Speaker 2: that's back to back weeks without a turnover where the
- 11:55Speaker 2: play or a turnover. So he is cleaning up the turnovers.
- 11:59Speaker 2: The deep passing has returned. He is now number one
- 12:03Speaker 2: in the league and deep completions, deep touchdowns and deep
- 12:07Speaker 2: passing yards. So all this talk about he's got to
- 12:11Speaker 2: be patient and he's got to take profits and he's
- 12:14Speaker 2: got to be a check down Charlie and all that
- 12:17Speaker 2: kind of stuff. Or he could just, you know, sling it, right.
- 12:21Speaker 2: Or he could just be Drake may and throw the
- 12:23Speaker 2: ball deep as he's tends to do. And that doesn't
- 12:26Speaker 2: even account for those completions that, you know, AJ Brown,
- 12:29Speaker 2: not catching the ball over his shoulder or Romeo Dobbs
- 12:32Speaker 2: dropping one in Buffalo or whatever the case may be.
- 12:35Speaker 2: So his deep passing grades, his deep passing numbers are
- 12:39Speaker 2: back to being elite. He is now eighth in the
- 12:42Speaker 2: league and EPA per play. among quarterbacks after frankly not
- 12:46Speaker 2: playing well in the first three weeks of the season
- 12:49Speaker 2: so uh this is all leveled off here for drake
- 12:52Speaker 2: may and now it seems like every single week the
- 12:55Speaker 2: patriots have a advantage at the quarterback position i thought
- 12:59Speaker 2: in this game specifically uh alex the the quarterback discrepancy
- 13:03Speaker 2: was a big big reason why the patriots won this
- 13:06Speaker 2: game on sunday.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Yeah, he looks like he did last year. Looks like
- 13:09Speaker 1: himself and maybe not quite as good as he was
- 13:11Speaker 1: against the Raiders. A couple of nitpicks in there, but
- 13:14Speaker 1: just overall high, high level quarterbacking from him. And it's
- 13:17Speaker 1: good to see that again.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. Like you said, a few more nitpicks in
- 13:21Speaker 2: this game. You know, the whole. throw away underhand, intentional grounding,
- 13:28Speaker 2: near intentional grounding. It wasn't a near turnover. Cause the
- 13:31Speaker 2: ball was propelled forward. Like he threw it forward. So
- 13:34Speaker 2: it's not a fumble, but it was nearly intentional grounding.
- 13:38Speaker 2: I would say on that play. I, yeah, that was.
- 13:40Speaker 1: The one for me that like, look, I gotta be consistent.
- 13:44Speaker 1: I hate when quarterbacks make those plays.
- 13:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You're talking about the one where he was in the sack, right?
- 13:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:49Speaker 1: He's in the sack towards sideline.
- 13:51Speaker 2: And he shovel passes it out to the, uh, Henderson's
- 13:54Speaker 2: the check down, uh, out near the sideline, it didn't
- 13:57Speaker 2: get back to the line of scrimmage either. He's in
- 13:59Speaker 2: the pocket under pressure and the ball didn't get out,
- 14:02Speaker 2: out to back to the line of scrimmage. So I'm
- 14:04Speaker 2: pretty shocked that they didn't call it for intentional grounding.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Well, not just that it barely went forward.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 1: It was almost backwards. And you talk about where the
- 14:14Speaker 1: game is at, at that point, it's starting to get
- 14:15Speaker 1: away from them a little bit. And, you know, I
- 14:18Speaker 1: had a moment where I was like, like that felt
- 14:20Speaker 1: like first three weeks, Drake may that felt panicked. And look,
- 14:22Speaker 1: I have to be consistent. I don't like when quarterbacks
- 14:25Speaker 1: make plays like that. I don't applaud them. And yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 1: it worked. It saved him a couple yards. Wasn't the
- 14:31Speaker 1: time and place. That play was the one that kind
- 14:34Speaker 1: of bugged the crap out of me.
- 14:35Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that one was definitely his most egregious error
- 14:39Speaker 2: in this game. But on a couple of positive notes,
- 14:43Speaker 2: and then we'll move on from Drake May, I thought
- 14:46Speaker 2: that the Jets... I said last week that if the
- 14:49Speaker 2: jets came into this game and heated up Drake may
- 14:53Speaker 2: and blitzed him as much as they were doing in
- 14:54Speaker 2: the first handful of games of the season, especially that
- 14:58Speaker 2: game last week against Cleveland and played a lot of
- 15:01Speaker 2: man coverage, which is Aaron Glenn's mo that Drake may
- 15:04Speaker 2: was going to shred them. And to their credit in
- 15:07Speaker 2: the first half, they, they backed off. They played a
- 15:09Speaker 2: lot more zone. They played a lot more coverage. They
- 15:12Speaker 2: actually dropped eight a couple of times in that first
- 15:15Speaker 2: half as well. You know, on the Dobbs touchdown as
- 15:17Speaker 2: an example of that, and maybe in an area of
- 15:20Speaker 2: growth for Drake may, I thought he showed really great
- 15:23Speaker 2: patients in the game and, and didn't necessarily get too
- 15:27Speaker 2: panicky or too antsy and a lot of clean pockets,
- 15:30Speaker 2: but I'm not trying and we'll get to the offensive
- 15:32Speaker 2: line in a second. Cause they deserve their flowers. I'm
- 15:34Speaker 2: not trying to take away anything from the offensive line,
- 15:37Speaker 2: but the jets pass rush was clearly having one of
- 15:40Speaker 2: those calculated mush rush type of days. Like they're there.
- 15:45Speaker 2: And their objective in the game was no scrambles. Can't
- 15:51Speaker 2: let them out of the pocket. Can't let them extend, right?
- 15:53Speaker 2: Like those were the things that they were trying to accomplish.
- 15:56Speaker 2: They had Bailey a couple of times. We'll McDonald a
- 15:59Speaker 2: couple of times. just spying Drake may instead of actually
- 16:02Speaker 2: rushing the quarterback. So they, they backed off in the
- 16:05Speaker 2: first half. They came after him a little bit in
- 16:07Speaker 2: the second half. So I kind of liked the way
- 16:09Speaker 2: Glenn called the game. Like you kind of lull them
- 16:11Speaker 2: into like this, you know, a patient type of game
- 16:15Speaker 2: plan early. And then they started to heat them up
- 16:17Speaker 2: in the second half. And even in the second half
- 16:19Speaker 2: with some of those blitzes, even though they didn't get
- 16:22Speaker 2: them blocked particularly well, they had answers in terms of
- 16:25Speaker 2: hot routes and like things to get the ball out
- 16:27Speaker 2: of his hands, especially like, some of those outlets to
- 16:30Speaker 2: Hunter Henry. So I thought that he all around just handled, uh,
- 16:34Speaker 2: what I thought was a pretty good game plan and
- 16:37Speaker 2: a pretty good, uh, play calling sequencing from Aaron Glenn
- 16:41Speaker 2: early on. He was patient. He stayed in the pocket.
- 16:43Speaker 2: He bought time. He kept his eyes down the field,
- 16:47Speaker 2: hit receivers down the field when there wasn't much of
- 16:49Speaker 2: a pass rush. And then later in the game, when
- 16:51Speaker 2: they started to heat him up, he had answers. He
- 16:53Speaker 2: had ways to get out of the pressure and release
- 16:55Speaker 2: the pressure. So if you're looking for him to like,
- 16:58Speaker 2: just think the game and manage the game from that standpoint.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I do think you can point to a game like
- 17:04Speaker 2: this and say, okay, it's not the best defense in
- 17:06Speaker 2: the league, but this is a, at least an average
- 17:08Speaker 2: jets defense. It's not a bad jets defense. And he
- 17:11Speaker 2: was able to, to manage the game in that respect.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Patience was the word he said there at
- 17:18Speaker 1: the beginning, outside of that one play, I thought he
- 17:20Speaker 1: just let the game come to him, which again is
- 17:23Speaker 1: what he wasn't doing at the beginning of the year.
- 17:25Speaker 2: Yep. I'd mentioned the offensive line. Again, I'm not trying
- 17:29Speaker 2: to take anything away from the group. I didn't think
- 17:31Speaker 2: the Jets necessarily, though, like really were trying to rush
- 17:37Speaker 2: the quarterback, pinning their ears back like they were the
- 17:40Speaker 2: week before with Deshaun Watson when they had the eight sacks.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Very clear to me that they did not think that
- 17:45Speaker 2: Deshaun Watson's legs were still a factor at this stage
- 17:49Speaker 2: of his career. They rush Drake made significantly differently in
- 17:53Speaker 2: this game. Now, with that being said, when you lose
- 17:56Speaker 2: three offensive linemen over the course of the game and
- 17:59Speaker 2: you give up zero sacks against a team that just
- 18:01Speaker 2: sacked the quarterback eight times the week before, you deserve kudos.
- 18:05Speaker 2: That's a really good performance. The next-gen numbers were 35%
- 18:08Speaker 2: pressure rate. PFF had it a little bit higher at 41%,
- 18:13Speaker 2: but still under that 40% threshold that we talk a
- 18:16Speaker 2: lot about with Drake may and his extension and his
- 18:19Speaker 2: mobility of factoring into some of those pressures. And then, uh,
- 18:22Speaker 2: no sacks against a front that had eight last week.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So kudos to those guys, Matt prior, um, played a
- 18:31Speaker 2: pretty well as a fill-in and then we'll get to
- 18:34Speaker 2: Lomo here in a second. But what did you just
- 18:35Speaker 2: think about the overall performance of the offensive line?
- 18:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, give Doug Marone a game ball too.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Forget those guys, right? That was insanely impressive, not just
- 18:44Speaker 1: in pass protection, but, and I don't know if you
- 18:46Speaker 1: want to, you had more in the passing game where
- 18:48Speaker 1: we can kind of pivot here, but they got a
- 18:50Speaker 1: push in the run game, Evan.
- 18:52Speaker 2: You did.
- 18:52Speaker 1: You know how much I've been talking about that. They
- 18:54Speaker 1: got a good, against a good Jets front. This isn't
- 18:56Speaker 1: one of those like, all right, well, I need to
- 18:58Speaker 1: see it against a team that's better against the run. Like,
- 19:01Speaker 1: you know how I feel about Devontre Sweat. And they
- 19:03Speaker 1: got other good players up there as well. It's a legit,
- 19:06Speaker 1: front four, front seven to Mario Davis, still getting it done.
- 19:09Speaker 1: So to see them to get that kind of push, Evan,
- 19:12Speaker 1: they ran. And I, I know some people have the
- 19:14Speaker 1: problems with the first down runs, but a good first
- 19:18Speaker 1: down run. Would you agree is if you're doing that,
- 19:21Speaker 1: you can pretty much build anything off of that.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Offensively you're getting four or five yards on first
- 19:25Speaker 2: down in the run game. You're in good shape.
- 19:28Speaker 1: They ran the ball 15 times on first down for
- 19:31Speaker 1: 76 yards. That's over five, basically 5.1 yards per carry
- 19:36Speaker 1: on first down. Only one of those runs went for
- 19:39Speaker 1: a loss. All but three went for four more yards. Yeah,
- 19:43Speaker 1: that is how you sustain a run game. That was excellent.
- 19:47Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Excellent.
- 19:48Speaker 5: Excellent.
- 19:48Speaker 1: If they can do that, can it's going to open
- 19:51Speaker 1: up a ton for the pass game.
- 19:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 19:54Speaker 1: Because it just forced the defense to consider different things,
- 19:57Speaker 1: forced them to play it differently. So, you know, the
- 20:00Speaker 1: pass protection is great. I don't want to take away
- 20:01Speaker 1: from it. I got really excited seeing what they did
- 20:04Speaker 1: in the run game against that front, especially on first downs.
- 20:06Speaker 2: I thought early in the game, I thought Henderson and
- 20:09Speaker 2: Stevenson ran hard and the difference was in this game.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And there were a couple of, of miscues in terms
- 20:16Speaker 2: of penetrators in the backfield. they were at least getting
- 20:19Speaker 2: that first initial push. I felt like, which allowed Henderson
- 20:23Speaker 2: and Stevenson to get downhill. And, you know, I thought
- 20:27Speaker 2: that they didn't do a great job of blocking up
- 20:30Speaker 2: the second level until the kinder drive, which we'll get
- 20:32Speaker 2: to in a second. But I thought that early on
- 20:35Speaker 2: in the game, they were getting one or two yards
- 20:37Speaker 2: before contact. And then Stevenson and Henderson are punching it
- 20:41Speaker 2: through for four or five yards at a time.
- 20:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 20:43Speaker 2: So credit to the backs for finishing runs and having
- 20:46Speaker 2: the power to be able to do that. You know,
- 20:48Speaker 2: obviously Ramondre has that third down run where he broke
- 20:51Speaker 2: like seven tackles and goes for 12 yards. I still
- 20:54Speaker 2: want to see like the explosive runs at the second
- 20:57Speaker 2: and third level where they get real blocks down the
- 20:59Speaker 2: field from guys, whether it's getting alignment to the second
- 21:02Speaker 2: level or having like the periphery guys, the tight ends,
- 21:05Speaker 2: the wide receivers be able to block at the second
- 21:08Speaker 2: level and third level of the defense. But at least
- 21:10Speaker 2: they were getting a little bit of progress initially to
- 21:13Speaker 2: get those four yards at a time. So that was good.
- 21:17Speaker 2: And then the kinder drive was just, was just as
- 21:20Speaker 2: Rabel likes to put it at classy, you know, just
- 21:23Speaker 2: that that's a big boy drive. That's what you want.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:26Speaker 2: That's what you want. Six minute clock killing Corey kinder.
- 21:31Speaker 2: And they ran a couple of really good power plays
- 21:34Speaker 2: on that, pulling the guard. They ran some duo and
- 21:37Speaker 2: they blocked it. Well, it's not to take anything away
- 21:39Speaker 2: from kinder who ran hard, but I thought that the
- 21:41Speaker 2: difference between that drive and maybe the rest of the
- 21:44Speaker 2: game was that they were actually creating some holes down
- 21:48Speaker 2: the field for the backs as well and kind of
- 21:50Speaker 2: took advantage of those. So really just a good day
- 21:54Speaker 2: for the offensive line, considering all the injuries and all
- 21:57Speaker 2: the issues that they had with injuries over the course
- 22:01Speaker 2: of the game down to their last active offensive lineman.
- 22:04Speaker 2: by the end of it with Walter Rouse. The last
- 22:07Speaker 2: thing I want to say on the offensive line, I
- 22:08Speaker 2: said I was going to apologize for giving out bad
- 22:11Speaker 2: information on Brennan Schooler. I also have to eat a
- 22:15Speaker 2: little bit of crow on Caleb Lomu, who I think
- 22:17Speaker 2: for back-to-back weeks, one on the left side, one on
- 22:20Speaker 2: the right side, has looked really, really solid. He belongs
- 22:24Speaker 2: in the NFL. He could probably start, I think, at
- 22:27Speaker 2: one of the tackle spots right now. And I think
- 22:30Speaker 2: my whole take on it from the beginning was, one,
- 22:35Speaker 2: based off of what we saw in the summer I
- 22:37Speaker 2: was concerned that he wasn't going to be able to
- 22:39Speaker 2: contribute right away I thought maybe not necessarily a full
- 22:43Speaker 2: red shirt but like we were headed for one of
- 22:45Speaker 2: those kinds of seasons right where it just wasn't going
- 22:48Speaker 2: to be a starting caliber player right out of the
- 22:51Speaker 2: shoot the second thing was is I just felt like
- 22:54Speaker 2: at this part of their build just holistically where they
- 22:58Speaker 2: are at with the roster. I felt like it drafting
- 23:01Speaker 2: a third tackle was a little bit of a luxury
- 23:04Speaker 2: pick at the time, right? Like they just, they had
- 23:06Speaker 2: some other holes. They had some areas where they could
- 23:09Speaker 2: have drafted the media impact players and they decided to
- 23:12Speaker 2: draft for future in depth at tackle. Well, this is
- 23:16Speaker 2: why they did it. They did it because Will Campbell
- 23:18Speaker 2: got hurt last week. Morgan Moses gets hurt this week
- 23:22Speaker 2: and Caleb Lomu has stepped in extremely well in both games.
- 23:26Speaker 2: I I've been highly impressed and I'm, I'm actually having
- 23:28Speaker 2: a fun time watching his film. I think he's looked
- 23:31Speaker 2: really good. Uh, the block that he made on Bailey on, uh,
- 23:34Speaker 2: DeMario Douglas's touchdown was certainly like the standout block that
- 23:38Speaker 2: he had in the game, but I thought he held
- 23:39Speaker 2: his own in the run game. Uh, I thought that
- 23:42Speaker 2: he held his own against power both weeks. I don't
- 23:44Speaker 2: think he looks like he's getting overwhelmed. by NFL power.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So overall, Caleb Lomu looks like right now he's headed
- 23:52Speaker 2: in a great direction for the future. Him and Campbell,
- 23:55Speaker 2: as your bookend tackles for the foreseeable future, Alex, is
- 23:58Speaker 2: feeling awfully good right now.
- 24:00Speaker 1: That's the vision, right? This is the vision. And yeah,
- 24:03Speaker 1: you can tell that it's coming to him now that
- 24:06Speaker 1: he's playing a little bit more. I do think that
- 24:08Speaker 1: that's probably helping, right? Because he can work on stuff
- 24:11Speaker 1: in real time and we'll see if he plays this week.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Morgan Moses was listed as limited yesterday. They did a walkthrough.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So sorry, I know it's an estimate, but yeah, like real,
- 24:22Speaker 1: real progress in real time from, from Caleb Loma. Yeah.
- 24:25Speaker 2: I was, I was dead wrong about it. I thought that,
- 24:28Speaker 2: I didn't think that he had like the nasty or
- 24:31Speaker 2: that like chip on his shoulder that I typically like
- 24:34Speaker 2: out of Lyman, like a guy like Campbell who had,
- 24:36Speaker 2: who kind of like eats nails and sort of does
- 24:38Speaker 2: that sort of thing. And then I also just wasn't
- 24:41Speaker 2: a fan of the roster building aspect of it. And I, I,
- 24:45Speaker 2: I've been dead wrong about it. He's, he's proven me wrong.
- 24:47Speaker 2: So I credit to him about that. And I credit
- 24:49Speaker 2: to the coaches. I think they've, they've got them ready.
- 24:52Speaker 2: They've got them used to playing on the right side.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Like I didn't think he looked any different, uh, on
- 24:56Speaker 2: the right side than he did on the left side
- 24:58Speaker 2: last week. So he looks comfortable playing both sides right now.
- 25:01Speaker 2: He looks like he's on his way. And I think,
- 25:05Speaker 2: whatever you think of Campbell, like either way, uh, these
- 25:08Speaker 2: two guys are, are looking, uh, both like they're starting
- 25:11Speaker 2: caliber tackles to whoever plays left or whoever plays right
- 25:14Speaker 2: in the future. You know, whatever the case may be,
- 25:16Speaker 2: it looks like they're, they might be set there, which
- 25:19Speaker 2: I mean, that would be great. I, it's been eons
- 25:22Speaker 2: since we could say that they were set at both
- 25:24Speaker 2: tackle spots, like maybe right. Nate Solder, Marcus cannon, as
- 25:28Speaker 2: long as we've covered the team. Yeah, the last time
- 25:31Speaker 2: I can think of that the Patriots had two quality
- 25:34Speaker 2: starting tackles was Solder and Cannon, which is mid-2010s, right?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Like Cannon is in Solder.
- 25:42Speaker 1: Talking about like with long-term projection, like 18, they end
- 25:45Speaker 1: up figuring it out, but we knew Trent Brown was
- 25:47Speaker 1: a one-year guy.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, 100%. So that was good to see. A
- 25:53Speaker 2: couple more things on the goods, and then we'll get
- 25:55Speaker 2: to A.J. Brown and the rest of it. your side
- 25:59Speaker 2: of the street a little bit here, Alex, uh, before halftime,
- 26:02Speaker 2: just dominating situational football. They dominated situational football throughout the
- 26:06Speaker 2: entire game. If you look at like third down red zone,
- 26:09Speaker 2: things like that. Uh, but the jets have really struggled
- 26:13Speaker 2: in the middle eight of games before halftime, the first
- 26:15Speaker 2: four minutes are last four minutes of the second quarter.
- 26:18Speaker 2: First four minutes of the third quarter, the Patriots went
- 26:22Speaker 2: in a sequence there. They, they get 10 to nothing.
- 26:25Speaker 2: They go, you know, 10 unanswered points in there, or
- 26:28Speaker 2: I should say straight points in that sequence. It went
- 26:31Speaker 2: jets turnover on downs, Patriots field goal jets, three and
- 26:35Speaker 2: out Patriots touchdown. They took control of the game in
- 26:39Speaker 2: that period of the game and dominated red zone dominated
- 26:42Speaker 2: third down. They really controlled Patriots. the aspects of the
- 26:46Speaker 2: game that you kind of think about as like buttoned
- 26:48Speaker 2: up operations, right? Like good coaching staffs, well-coached teams. They
- 26:53Speaker 2: usually dominate the end of halves and situations like that.
- 26:56Speaker 2: And the Patriots certainly outclassed the Jets in that area.
- 27:01Speaker 1: And this has been two weeks in a row now.
- 27:03Speaker 1: They've been good in that end of half and the
- 27:05Speaker 1: first half situation. Didn't finish the double score this week
- 27:08Speaker 1: on the other side, but, and then, so that's good.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And then the four minutes, They almost took the last
- 27:14Speaker 1: six and a half minutes off the clock in the
- 27:16Speaker 1: first half. If A.J. Brown doesn't have that drop, you know,
- 27:19Speaker 1: down near the goal line, they just run that one
- 27:22Speaker 1: drive and they really shorten the game. And then, you know,
- 27:26Speaker 1: the kinder drive at the end of the game and
- 27:28Speaker 1: their ability to just kill the clock and shorten that
- 27:30Speaker 1: thing was really good. So, yeah, situationally, they were excellent.
- 27:34Speaker 1: They got a couple fourth down stops. Hell of a
- 27:36Speaker 1: tackle by Robert Spillane. Standing up Braylon Allen in the hole. Yeah.
- 27:40Speaker 1: but it's good to see that they're settled down a
- 27:42Speaker 1: little bit now on those end of half things. Cause
- 27:43Speaker 1: those were shaky at the start.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Of the year. Nine for 17 on late downs, you know,
- 27:48Speaker 2: third and fourth down, uh, the jets were three at
- 27:51Speaker 2: 12 with those two failed fourth downs. And I mean,
- 27:54Speaker 2: the sneak was maybe a bad spot, but, uh, still
- 27:57Speaker 2: the Patriots got two stops on fourth down early in
- 27:59Speaker 2: this game. Just, just dominated them in like those margins,
- 28:03Speaker 2: you know, those areas of the game, uh, on defense,
- 28:08Speaker 2: Christian Gonzalez comes back. Wasn't perfect. You know, did give
- 28:11Speaker 2: up the third down catch to Garrett Wilson, but 17
- 28:14Speaker 2: routes against Garrett Wilson, two catches, 20 yards. Like when
- 28:17Speaker 2: you play a receiver that caliber and you shadow him
- 28:20Speaker 2: from the majority of the game and you give up
- 28:22Speaker 2: two catches for 20 yards, it is, you know that
- 28:26Speaker 2: you're a good player when I'm nitpicking you on one play, right?
- 28:30Speaker 2: Like you gave up one third down catch and Gonzalez's
- 28:34Speaker 2: standard is just so high that that stands out a
- 28:37Speaker 2: little bit. But overall, I thought Gonzalez once again, and
- 28:41Speaker 2: maybe part of it is that Garrett Wilson needs a
- 28:44Speaker 2: quarterback and it never really has had a quarterback that's
- 28:47Speaker 2: up for the challenge. But every time the Patriots play
- 28:50Speaker 2: the Jets, it seems like Christian Gonzalez takes Garrett Wilson
- 28:53Speaker 2: out of the game.
- 28:55Speaker 1: Yeah, no rust from him coming back from that injury.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I thought he handled his business well, allowed a couple
- 29:01Speaker 1: completions in zone. That's going to happen. He was really good.
- 29:05Speaker 1: He's really good in this game.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Another standout on defense, Elijah Ponder just continues to have
- 29:12Speaker 2: a career year. He's up to five and a half
- 29:14Speaker 2: sacks through six games. That's already a career high. He's
- 29:18Speaker 2: on pace for like 15 sacks. I don't know if
- 29:20Speaker 2: he'll get to 15. Like that's a big number, but he's,
- 29:23Speaker 2: he's on pace to have a double digit sacks, at
- 29:25Speaker 2: least a monster season. I thought that he, you know,
- 29:29Speaker 2: once again was effective rushing the passer and couple of
- 29:33Speaker 2: different stunts that made big impact plays. One of them,
- 29:35Speaker 2: a third down in the red zone that made the
- 29:38Speaker 2: jet settle for a field goal. He also worked a
- 29:40Speaker 2: stunt with Daquan Jones on the interception for Charles woods
- 29:43Speaker 2: that caused the pressure that created the interception. So, uh,
- 29:47Speaker 2: ponder is, has been very good. We've uh, was a
- 29:54Speaker 2: effective spleen. You mentioned the tackle in the hole again, uh,
- 29:58Speaker 2: not necessarily the cleanest game defensively, which we'll get to
- 30:01Speaker 2: on the other side of the break, but I just
- 30:03Speaker 2: think ponder continues to put up numbers. He continues to
- 30:06Speaker 2: produce at that spot.
- 30:08Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 30:09Speaker 1: And I'll go back to, I thought this was when
- 30:10Speaker 1: Robert explains best games of the year. I thought he
- 30:12Speaker 1: was really good in it. It, it, that fourth down
- 30:15Speaker 1: stand up is just an unbelievable play against a big,
- 30:18Speaker 1: unbelievable play. Yeah. Yeah. No six, one, two 35 meets
- 30:22Speaker 1: him in the hole. stops him on contact. Like that's,
- 30:25Speaker 1: that's big time football.
- 30:27Speaker 2: That's old school. That, that, that's, that's, that's real big
- 30:31Speaker 2: boy football right there.
- 30:32Speaker 6: All right.
- 30:32Speaker 2: We're going to take a quick break. Uh, when we
- 30:34Speaker 2: get back from the break, we'll talk about AJ Brown
- 30:36Speaker 2: and the stuff that gets you beaten the bads.

- 33:07Speaker 2: get to the bads and let's talk about A.J.
- 33:10Speaker 6: Brown.
- 33:11Speaker 2: I want to unpack this for a few minutes. I
- 33:15Speaker 2: want to start by saying, you know, first of all,
- 33:19Speaker 2: you know, we all know at this point that he,
- 33:21Speaker 2: he was three for 10 for 27 yards, right? He
- 33:23Speaker 2: caught three passes on 10 targets, 27 yards, both next
- 33:28Speaker 2: gen and PFF officially gave him two drops, but that
- 33:32Speaker 2: felt generous. Like I think it could have been really,
- 33:35Speaker 2: you could have made the argument. He dropped three or
- 33:37Speaker 2: four passes in this game with all that being said,
- 33:42Speaker 2: I have no, really no concern level right now with
- 33:45Speaker 2: AJ Brown. I think a lot, I've seen a lot
- 33:47Speaker 2: of things that are going around theories, floated things like
- 33:51Speaker 2: that about, you know, was the ankle bothering him? Um,
- 33:54Speaker 2: you know, the contact, like all these different types of stuff,
- 33:57Speaker 2: my read on it, I thought he was open kind
- 33:59Speaker 2: of the whole game. Like I thought he ran good routes.
- 34:02Speaker 2: I thought he looked explosive. I don't think they were
- 34:04Speaker 2: forcing him the ball. I think that he was the
- 34:06Speaker 2: open man and here the ball was going to him.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Obviously they were featuring him. He's AJ Brown and he's
- 34:12Speaker 2: their number one wide receiver and he's back from injury.
- 34:15Speaker 2: They should be featuring him. Mike Rabel mentioned yesterday. on
- 34:19Speaker 2: Monday that Romeo Dobbs also leaves the game with an injury,
- 34:22Speaker 2: like three plays into the game, four plays into the game.
- 34:25Speaker 2: So obviously you're going to have to adjust there in
- 34:29Speaker 2: terms of losing a receiver. But I did not think
- 34:32Speaker 2: that this was anything physical that was wrong with AJ Brown.
- 34:36Speaker 2: I did not think that this was force feeding AJ Brown.
- 34:39Speaker 2: I did not think that he had any issues with
- 34:42Speaker 2: like physicality or like, you know, hearing footsteps or anything
- 34:46Speaker 2: like that. I think he just had the drop sees like, Hey,
- 34:50Speaker 2: I just think that he just didn't catch the ball. Uh,
- 34:53Speaker 2: if he had had a better game in terms of, uh,
- 34:56Speaker 2: you know, catch point stuff, like the track and the
- 34:59Speaker 2: go ball over his shoulder, catching the ball on the
- 35:02Speaker 2: back of the end line in the end zone, two
- 35:04Speaker 2: plays that I think he can easily make. You were
- 35:07Speaker 2: talking about him having maybe multiple touchdowns over a hundred
- 35:11Speaker 2: yards in his return in this game. It was just
- 35:13Speaker 2: one of those Bad games like he just he just
- 35:17Speaker 2: had a weird kind of off game in this one,
- 35:20Speaker 2: especially catching the football. But I was really encouraged by
- 35:24Speaker 2: the way he moved on film. I thought he looked explosive.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I thought he looked twitchy. Change of direction looked good,
- 35:30Speaker 2: which are things that you worry about with high ankle
- 35:33Speaker 2: sprains and all the advanced metrics back that up. Only
- 35:37Speaker 2: one of his 10 targets was into a tight window
- 35:40Speaker 2: in this game. which tells me that he was open.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Like he's, he's open.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Right.
- 35:45Speaker 2: And he just didn't catch the football. There was also
- 35:47Speaker 2: a couple of like timing, just bad luck things to,
- 35:50Speaker 2: you know, one of his targets, he's open over the
- 35:52Speaker 2: middle of the field. The ball gets batted down at
- 35:54Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage on the first third down of
- 35:56Speaker 2: the game. Another one, they try to cut the end.
- 35:59Speaker 2: He runs a slant into the open window and Lomu
- 36:03Speaker 2: doesn't cut Bailey, right? He doesn't get Bailey's hands down.
- 36:06Speaker 2: And it kind of threw off the ball placement on
- 36:08Speaker 2: the play. Those, the, the, catch at the back of
- 36:11Speaker 2: the end zone, I think is a great sort of
- 36:13Speaker 2: teaching tool or like bank rep for Drake man, AJ Brown.
- 36:17Speaker 2: Cause Drake is seeing the safety coming over from the
- 36:21Speaker 2: right side of the, you know, his right coming to
- 36:23Speaker 2: the left onto AJ Brown. And so he throws it
- 36:26Speaker 2: back shoulder to try to keep AJ Brown away from
- 36:29Speaker 2: the safety. And I think that Brown kind of reacted
- 36:32Speaker 2: maybe a split second late to adjust to the back shoulder.
- 36:35Speaker 2: If he had done it, you know, a little bit
- 36:37Speaker 2: more in rhythm, but, then I think that he makes
- 36:39Speaker 2: that catch. So that's the one that they'll come back
- 36:41Speaker 2: to later and they'll hit it later on in the season.
- 36:44Speaker 2: Like they'll, they'll, you know, learn from that and bank
- 36:47Speaker 2: that rep live in the game. The best way I
- 36:50Speaker 2: can put it is that AJ Brown is still playing
- 36:55Speaker 2: September football. He's still in like ramp up extension of
- 36:59Speaker 2: the preseason mode. And the rest of this offense has
- 37:02Speaker 2: been playing together for five or six weeks at this point.
- 37:05Speaker 2: And he looked rusty and he just looked like a
- 37:07Speaker 2: guy that is trying to find his rhythm within this
- 37:09Speaker 2: offense right now.
- 37:11Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:11Speaker 1: That last thing you just said is the big point
- 37:13Speaker 1: to me. Like you got to remember, he'd only played
- 37:14Speaker 1: 20 something snaps since January.
- 37:18Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 37:19Speaker 1: It's not like he fully ramped up, got going, then
- 37:21Speaker 1: got hurt. It was half into the first game, didn't
- 37:24Speaker 1: play in the preseason. So there's a ramp-up period. Now,
- 37:29Speaker 1: is A.J. Brown trying to first-round pick for him that
- 37:31Speaker 1: should only take so long? It shouldn't go multiple games, right?
- 37:36Speaker 1: They need him to get going starting this week against
- 37:38Speaker 1: the Bears. He needs to be a big part of
- 37:39Speaker 1: the offense.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's got to make these plays. Right, yeah.
- 37:44Speaker 1: So I'm willing to look at that game and say, okay,
- 37:46Speaker 1: maybe there was some rust he hadn't played in a while.
- 37:49Speaker 1: we saw how you remember how rusty the whole team
- 37:51Speaker 1: looked for the first week or two, right? This was
- 37:53Speaker 1: essentially his season opener. He played so little against Seattle, but,
- 37:57Speaker 1: but you know, it's, he doesn't have a month to
- 38:00Speaker 1: get ramped up like everybody else did. They're in this
- 38:02Speaker 1: thing now. And so we'll see what he does next week.
- 38:05Speaker 1: It sucks that they don't have extra time to work
- 38:07Speaker 1: on it, or maybe that's better just so it doesn't
- 38:09Speaker 1: become a mental thing. You just have to turn the
- 38:10Speaker 1: page so quickly onto the next game with the Thursday
- 38:13Speaker 1: night game. But yeah, it was frustrating for sure. Uh,
- 38:17Speaker 1: I'll say the same thing I did about Drake May
- 38:19Speaker 1: when Drake May struggled at the beginning of the year.
- 38:20Speaker 1: And it was like, well, is this who he is now?
- 38:22Speaker 1: What is it? And it's like, as bad as he
- 38:25Speaker 1: is or was at the time, there's so much evidence
- 38:29Speaker 1: to the contrary that he, that's just not who he is.
- 38:31Speaker 5: Right.
- 38:32Speaker 1: That it was like, yeah, he'll snap out of it.
- 38:33Speaker 1: And that's kind of where I'm at with AJ Brown.
- 38:35Speaker 1: If he was a rookie and he had that game.
- 38:37Speaker 1: Oh boy. There's so much evidence that that's not who
- 38:40Speaker 1: he is, that he had a bad game. I'm willing
- 38:44Speaker 1: to just chalk it up to that. And, Hopefully we're like,
- 38:47Speaker 1: hopefully we're laughing about it in a month.
- 38:49Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Especially the catch point stuff. Like he's been one of
- 38:52Speaker 2: the best contested catch receivers and one of the best, uh,
- 38:56Speaker 2: you know, finishers on at the catch point in the
- 38:59Speaker 2: NFL for his entire career. You know, like we saw
- 39:01Speaker 2: it all summer long, him making, uh, you know, great
- 39:04Speaker 2: acrobatic catches, uh, and stuff like that. And so to
- 39:07Speaker 2: see him just struggle with catching the football like that, uh, that,
- 39:11Speaker 2: that was really surprising, but, uh, I keep going back
- 39:14Speaker 2: to the same thing. I would so much rather these
- 39:18Speaker 2: things be happening like a one-off game where he just
- 39:22Speaker 2: has the drop season, maybe some timing and like rhythm
- 39:24Speaker 2: things that they can work on over the course of
- 39:27Speaker 2: the season versus him looking like he's stuck in the
- 39:30Speaker 2: mud and isn't getting open, right? Like that. If it
- 39:33Speaker 2: was the second thing, if he was struggling to separate
- 39:36Speaker 2: and he looked like he had no juice and an
- 39:38Speaker 2: ankle looked like it maybe was bothering him, that to
- 39:41Speaker 2: me would have been like, Like that would have been like,
- 39:45Speaker 2: all right, well maybe the high ankle sprain and all this,
- 39:48Speaker 2: like maybe they're not going to get AJ Brown at
- 39:50Speaker 2: a peak of his powers this season because of the injury.
- 39:54Speaker 2: This to me was, was the opposite of that, which
- 39:57Speaker 2: makes me feel even kind of better. Like I I'm
- 40:00Speaker 2: glad that he was getting open as much as he was.
- 40:03Speaker 1: You know?
- 40:03Speaker 2: And I, I thought that jets really struggled to cover
- 40:05Speaker 2: him in this game. Like on the go ball target,
- 40:08Speaker 2: you know, he uses a little bit of like a,
- 40:09Speaker 2: a subtle arm bar, like kind of veteran savvy to,
- 40:12Speaker 2: to really stack and pull away late from the corner.
- 40:15Speaker 2: But he ran right by Stevenson, like he, or Stevens,
- 40:17Speaker 2: he ran right by the corner and was open and
- 40:20Speaker 2: catches that ball over his shoulder and his sleep. And
- 40:23Speaker 2: he just didn't track it well. So these are, these
- 40:25Speaker 2: are all things that I expect to be one-off performance
- 40:29Speaker 2: things for AJ Brown or or just little minutiae things
- 40:32Speaker 2: that him and Drake may need to work on together
- 40:36Speaker 2: live in games. Now you mentioned the lack of reps
- 40:39Speaker 2: that he had against Seattle. They just haven't banked these
- 40:42Speaker 2: reps together. They just haven't played in a game. They
- 40:45Speaker 2: also didn't play in the preseason together. So it's just
- 40:48Speaker 2: a lot of that right now with AJ Brown, but
- 40:51Speaker 2: I don't think it was anything nefarious. Like I don't
- 40:55Speaker 2: think that these were any concerns that I'm really like,
- 40:57Speaker 2: you know, even small C concerned about at this point
- 41:00Speaker 2: with AJ Brown. Now, if he goes out on Thursday
- 41:04Speaker 2: night and he can't catch a cold again, then we
- 41:07Speaker 2: have a different conversation on the show next week, right?
- 41:10Speaker 2: Like that. That would certainly change the way I'm looking
- 41:13Speaker 2: at things with him right now. Last that I'll give you,
- 41:16Speaker 2: he caught 30% of his passes, obviously, right? Three for 10.
- 41:20Speaker 2: I know you hate the expected, but the expected completion
- 41:24Speaker 2: percentage on those throws was over 66%. So like he
- 41:28Speaker 2: should have caught like at least six of those passes
- 41:31Speaker 2: that were thrown his way just based off of how
- 41:33Speaker 2: open he was and things like that. So that tells
- 41:35Speaker 2: you right there that he was open consistently throughout the game. Just,
- 41:40Speaker 2: Couldn't finish the catches. Couldn't finish the plays. Looking at
- 41:44Speaker 2: the defense in terms of the bads, I thought in
- 41:48Speaker 2: this game, I give credit to Frank Reich. I gave
- 41:50Speaker 2: some credit earlier to Aaron Glenn. I thought the Jets
- 41:53Speaker 2: had some answers for the Patriots pressure package in this game.
- 41:56Speaker 2: A couple of those short trap runs that they ran
- 41:59Speaker 2: in the first half. gained 16 and 13 yards. They
- 42:02Speaker 2: also called a couple of screens into some of those
- 42:05Speaker 2: blitzes that were effective. One of them was late in
- 42:07Speaker 2: that drive at the end of the game that they
- 42:09Speaker 2: got the field goal on to make it a seven
- 42:11Speaker 2: point game, but they hit Omar Cooper jr. For an
- 42:13Speaker 2: 18 yard play on a screen against a zero against
- 42:17Speaker 2: the cover zero that simulated pressure package. When the Patriots
- 42:22Speaker 2: just line up, seven guys across the line of scrimmage
- 42:25Speaker 2: and they drop out of it most of the time,
- 42:27Speaker 2: but you know, one in every five times it's cover
- 42:30Speaker 2: zero that has been wreaking havoc all season long. They've
- 42:34Speaker 2: had a, they've had a lot of success with it. Uh,
- 42:36Speaker 2: I've broken down a lot of the tricky cover twos
- 42:38Speaker 2: that they fall out into a lot of the time.
- 42:41Speaker 2: This was the first time in Reich's a veteran coordinator,
- 42:45Speaker 2: veteran play caller. I thought the jets had some answers
- 42:48Speaker 2: against those that, uh, similarly to some of the stuff
- 42:51Speaker 2: we were talking about earlier, uh, I wish that this
- 42:54Speaker 2: was a longer week for them because I'm sure that
- 42:56Speaker 2: they would do an audit and a self-scout about what
- 42:59Speaker 2: exactly led to some of those leakages in terms of
- 43:03Speaker 2: these simulated pressures, which are such a big part of
- 43:06Speaker 2: their defense. So maybe after the Thursday night game, they
- 43:09Speaker 2: have a mini buy going into Miami. Zach core and
- 43:13Speaker 2: the staff can talk about some of those things in
- 43:15Speaker 2: terms of what exactly they could do to change it
- 43:17Speaker 2: up so that they don't see repeat plays. That would
- 43:21Speaker 2: be my biggest concern with some of those runs, especially
- 43:24Speaker 2: is that teams are going to watch that on film
- 43:27Speaker 2: and they're going to start seeing repeat plays where teams
- 43:29Speaker 2: are going to use short traps where they're pulling the guard.
- 43:33Speaker 2: But instead of him going out to the tackle, he's
- 43:36Speaker 2: going to hit the three technique. You know, he's going
- 43:37Speaker 2: to hit Milton Williams first. uh, as a defensive tackle.
- 43:40Speaker 2: So those are called short trap plays instead of the
- 43:42Speaker 2: long trap or the counter would be all the way out, uh,
- 43:45Speaker 2: to the tackle. This is a little bit different. Uh,
- 43:48Speaker 2: and they kind of decreased them. They knew that they
- 43:50Speaker 2: had those two linebackers, Mike, uh, mugging up in the
- 43:53Speaker 2: a gaps with splayed and Ellis. So it's a soft
- 43:56Speaker 2: middle with no nose tackle, kind of get the guards
- 43:59Speaker 2: up or the center up on the, on the two linebackers,
- 44:02Speaker 2: you know, alignment on linebackers. And then you pull the
- 44:05Speaker 2: guard to Milton, uh, Williams. And then they kind of
- 44:08Speaker 2: creased them that way a few times at Braylon Allen.
- 44:11Speaker 2: So I would just be small C concerned about seeing
- 44:13Speaker 2: that again when they go into those pressure fronts. Do we,
- 44:21Speaker 2: did he freeze? He might've froze. Oh, there he is.
- 44:24Speaker 2: All right. We'll keep it going.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Am I still here?
- 44:28Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Well, that's part of the fun of it, right? Is
- 44:32Speaker 1: over the course of the season, The offense has changed.
- 44:35Speaker 1: The defenses have to adjust. Now, does the defense adjust?
- 44:38Speaker 1: The offenses have to recount.
- 44:40Speaker 4: Absolutely.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Yeah, six games in, like, would you say repeat plays? Yes.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Is that the term used?
- 44:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:45Speaker 1: So, like, this is, you know, Zach Horst had an
- 44:48Speaker 1: unbelievable start to the year. Unbelievably excellent.
- 44:51Speaker 4: Yep.
- 44:52Speaker 1: And this doesn't take away from him, but this is
- 44:54Speaker 1: the next step of it. You know, this is why
- 44:56Speaker 1: you see sometimes teams pop in September and then fade,
- 45:00Speaker 1: especially a team with a new coach or a new coordinator, right?
- 45:02Speaker 1: there's just new things that team that haven't seen. And
- 45:05Speaker 1: then the team see it. And, you know, it's easy
- 45:09Speaker 1: to design something and put in new wrinkles. Do you
- 45:11Speaker 1: have counters to the counters and things like that? So,
- 45:14Speaker 1: you know, and they're going to face some, some good
- 45:15Speaker 1: offensive minds here coming up, starting with Ben Johnson this week.
- 45:19Speaker 1: So it'll be really interesting to see how, how Zach core,
- 45:23Speaker 1: you know, you got to do some self scouting here
- 45:25Speaker 1: and okay. If this is how they're going to counter
- 45:27Speaker 1: what I'm doing, what can I build off of it
- 45:29Speaker 1: to stop that?
- 45:30Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it's a great point about, um, coming out
- 45:33Speaker 2: hot in September with some new stuff, right? Like that
- 45:36Speaker 2: happens a lot across the league. Usually on my side
- 45:39Speaker 2: of the ball, usually that's the tight pants guys that
- 45:41Speaker 2: have been in the lab.
- 45:42Speaker 1: There's this new group of defensive coaches that now approach
- 45:45Speaker 1: it like those offensive coaches do, which is excellent.
- 45:48Speaker 2: I think it's great. Like this is probably a conversation
- 45:50Speaker 2: more for tomorrow that we can unpack, have a little
- 45:52Speaker 2: bit more time to talk about the evolution here. But
- 45:56Speaker 2: I think the resurgence of the defensive team, Guru of
- 45:59Speaker 2: the defensive mastermind, which I, I would give Mike McDonald
- 46:02Speaker 2: a lot of the credit for that. You know, I
- 46:04Speaker 2: think that his success in Seattle has led to a
- 46:07Speaker 2: lot of that, uh, kind.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Of, I was going to say is Ryan Flores, my
- 46:11Speaker 1: version of Kyle Shanahan. Yeah.
- 46:13Speaker 2: But, you know, he's obviously still at the coordinator level
- 46:15Speaker 2: for reasons.
- 46:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:16Speaker 2: There's like some unique reasons we won't discuss. But yeah,
- 46:20Speaker 2: like that, that's definitely he's definitely a big part of
- 46:24Speaker 2: it as well. And McDonald, Jesse Minter, like a lot
- 46:28Speaker 2: of these coaches that are cooking it up defensively. I
- 46:31Speaker 2: think Zach core is fantastic. sort of in that next
- 46:34Speaker 2: wave of maybe guys that are on the head coaching track.
- 46:38Speaker 2: I hope not for a while selfishly, but I think
- 46:41Speaker 2: that that's a, that's good for the league, man. It's
- 46:43Speaker 2: good for the league that some of these defensive guys
- 46:46Speaker 2: are a getting some shine, but be also punching back
- 46:48Speaker 2: a little bit on the offensive coaches and, and doing
- 46:51Speaker 2: some things that are giving these offenses some trouble. So, uh,
- 46:55Speaker 2: I think you're a hundred percent on it. I think
- 46:56Speaker 2: Zach core early on in the season, the simulated, the
- 47:00Speaker 2: tricky twos, like all this stuff has really, uh, surprised
- 47:04Speaker 2: their opponents and, and been really effective. And now these
- 47:08Speaker 2: good OCs, I don't know if right. Call right. Really
- 47:11Speaker 2: a good OC anymore, but he's certainly a experienced one. Uh,
- 47:15Speaker 2: and he's undermanned. No, no doubt about that, right? Like
- 47:18Speaker 2: he doesn't have the horses yet to really go toe
- 47:20Speaker 2: for toe. toe to toe. So we'll see Ben Johnson,
- 47:24Speaker 2: maybe not Bobby Sloak and the dolphins, but maybe so.
- 47:26Speaker 2: And then we'll move forward from there and see what
- 47:29Speaker 2: they can do.
- 47:30Speaker 1: One more.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Oh, just on that. We mentioned the injuries. We'll unpack
- 47:35Speaker 2: that more tomorrow. Obviously that's bad. That deserves to be
- 47:39Speaker 2: in the bads. Let's get to the stuff that gets
- 47:41Speaker 2: you beat. I will talk more about replacing the injury
- 47:43Speaker 2: guys tomorrow. The biggest one to me, And then I
- 47:48Speaker 2: want to unpack the Cooper touchdown a little bit to
- 47:51Speaker 2: loss fumbles again. And, uh, you know, Vrabel said it
- 47:56Speaker 2: on EEI yesterday. So I'll just use his words. Embarrassing.
- 47:59Speaker 2: He called it embarrassing. that they, they keep turning the
- 48:02Speaker 2: ball over like this. It's no longer the quarterback, which
- 48:05Speaker 2: I guess is encouraging that it's not the quarterback turning
- 48:08Speaker 2: the ball over and it's not interceptions anymore. Uh, but
- 48:12Speaker 2: Travion Henderson gets one ripped out at the top of
- 48:14Speaker 2: the pile and he kind of gets on the, on
- 48:17Speaker 2: a pile of bodies and, uh, David Bailey just comes
- 48:20Speaker 2: in and rips the ball out. And then with DeMario
- 48:24Speaker 2: Douglas's fumble, we've seen this a handful of times with
- 48:27Speaker 2: pop in the open field. He just kind of doesn't
- 48:30Speaker 2: have great awareness of, the situation. I think he tries
- 48:33Speaker 2: to do a little bit too much, like he said, uh,
- 48:36Speaker 2: after the game and, uh, and he fumbles the backside
- 48:39Speaker 2: pursued a really good play by Jermaine Sherwood, the linebacker to,
- 48:43Speaker 2: to hustle, uh, down the field to make that play.
- 48:45Speaker 2: But it's a 39 yard completion that you just completely
- 48:49Speaker 2: wipe off the board, uh, because Douglas fumbles at the
- 48:52Speaker 2: end of the run as a ball carrier. So there's
- 48:55Speaker 2: two instances that where they put the ball on the
- 48:57Speaker 2: ground again, uh, that they just can't, you can't keep
- 49:00Speaker 2: turning the ball over like this. You're not going to
- 49:01Speaker 2: win A whole lot of games turning the ball over
- 49:04Speaker 2: multiple times a week like they're doing right now.
- 49:07Speaker 1: Yeah, turnovers will kill you. Plain and simple. And it's
- 49:10Speaker 1: it's everybody. It's everybody. Everybody. Pop Douglas, Travion Henderson, cory
- 49:15Speaker 1: kiner aj brown like the you know going back a
- 49:18Speaker 1: couple weeks here not just this week but that that'll
- 49:22Speaker 1: kill you the fumbles will hurt you bad so they
- 49:24Speaker 1: gotta and vrabel said you know was asked if they'll
- 49:28Speaker 1: coach it more i don't know it sounds like they're
- 49:30Speaker 1: coaching it a lot They have ball security.
- 49:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 49:33Speaker 1: You got to work on it till it's fixed.
- 49:35Speaker 2: We see it. We see the receivers. Uh, they work
- 49:38Speaker 2: on the, getting the ball ripped out where they like
- 49:41Speaker 2: dive onto a, a gymnastics, like Matt pad thing. And
- 49:45Speaker 2: the coaches come in and they got, they're punching at
- 49:48Speaker 2: it and they're ripping at it. And the running backs and, uh,
- 49:50Speaker 2: the quarterbacks even go through a gauntlet, uh, of ball
- 49:54Speaker 2: security drills as well. So Drake may does it to, uh,
- 49:57Speaker 2: all the skill players, anybody that carries the football, uh,
- 50:00Speaker 2: Even sometimes they have the returners come over like Marcus
- 50:03Speaker 2: Jones and stuff like that to go through the drill.
- 50:05Speaker 2: So like they, they rep it in practice. They, they
- 50:08Speaker 2: really do. But these defensive guys are getting good at this.
- 50:12Speaker 2: They're getting good at the peanut punches. Uh, they oftentimes
- 50:17Speaker 2: the first guy in is going for the ball and
- 50:19Speaker 2: the second guy in is going for the tackle. Sometimes
- 50:22Speaker 2: that leads to broken tackles and maybe there's too many
- 50:25Speaker 2: of those missed tackles across the league. Uh, but these
- 50:27Speaker 2: defensive guys are coming after the ball for everybody, like
- 50:31Speaker 2: not just the Patriots players and, uh, the, the patch
- 50:34Speaker 2: players got to just do a better job securing the football. Uh,
- 50:38Speaker 2: the last thing that I had on the stuff that
- 50:40Speaker 2: gets you beat, uh, was the 48 yard touchdown to
- 50:43Speaker 2: Omar Cooper jr. I just felt like in this game
- 50:46Speaker 2: overall defensively, And speaking to some of the players after
- 50:51Speaker 2: the game, I think they felt the same way on
- 50:53Speaker 2: the defensive side. Just not totally buttoned up, like not
- 50:57Speaker 2: completely assignment sound in a game like this. Maybe a
- 51:01Speaker 2: little bit too much, like trying to do too much
- 51:04Speaker 2: to like trying to make a splash play. or trying
- 51:06Speaker 2: to make something happen, which I don't really know why
- 51:09Speaker 2: you're pressing no fence against the jets. Like, I don't
- 51:12Speaker 2: think they really needed to, uh, play outside of their structure, uh,
- 51:17Speaker 2: if you will. But I thought there was some of
- 51:19Speaker 2: that on the touchdown to Omar Cooper, Jr. My, my
- 51:22Speaker 2: read on it is that they were playing poach, uh, coverage,
- 51:25Speaker 2: which is a quarter's a check or a quarters variation.
- 51:29Speaker 2: So Craig Woodson is playing low and he's playing crossers
- 51:34Speaker 2: from the passing strength of the formation. So if a
- 51:36Speaker 2: receiver comes across the field on like an over route,
- 51:39Speaker 2: then Woodson's just going to cut off that crossing route
- 51:42Speaker 2: coming in across the field. which means that Bayard who's
- 51:45Speaker 2: playing really like a deep half safety, he's got a
- 51:49Speaker 2: match number two vertical. So if the number two receiver,
- 51:52Speaker 2: which is Cooper jr. In this case runs that big
- 51:55Speaker 2: post across the field, it's not on the backside safety.
- 51:59Speaker 2: It's not on Woodson, uh, to stay over the top
- 52:01Speaker 2: of that route. It's on buyer. Now, this is just
- 52:04Speaker 2: my interpretation. I don't know this for a hundred percent fact,
- 52:08Speaker 2: but I think that Bayard was supposed to stay connected
- 52:12Speaker 2: to Cooper jr's route and run across the field. They don't,
- 52:16Speaker 2: it's a check. They don't run the coverage a ton. Uh,
- 52:18Speaker 2: so maybe it's just a newer coverage for them and,
- 52:20Speaker 2: and communicating through that. The jets also did a nice job.
- 52:24Speaker 2: I thought they motioned the tight end across the formation
- 52:28Speaker 2: and the tight end became the outside receiver and it
- 52:31Speaker 2: put Cooper jr. In the slot. So we call that
- 52:34Speaker 2: as like, they made a new number one. So on
- 52:36Speaker 2: that side of the field, Cooper jr. Starts as the
- 52:38Speaker 2: number one, like you go from outside in. So one
- 52:41Speaker 2: would be the outside receiver. Two would be the slot.
- 52:44Speaker 2: If it's a trips or three receiver side, the number
- 52:47Speaker 2: three would be the inside slot receiver or the tight end.
- 52:50Speaker 2: So yeah, the motion, the tight end across that created
- 52:54Speaker 2: a new number one receiver. And now when they create
- 52:57Speaker 2: that new number one receiver to that side of the field,
- 53:00Speaker 2: now Bayard is matching the slot, right? Like now Bayard
- 53:03Speaker 2: is locked into the slot. So I wonder if that motion, uh,
- 53:08Speaker 2: it was subtle, but maybe that little motion did throw
- 53:10Speaker 2: them off with their coverage rules. Just a tiny bit. Uh,
- 53:14Speaker 2: I would, you know, maybe I'll get a clear answer
- 53:16Speaker 2: about that this week. If I get a chance to
- 53:18Speaker 2: ask the guys, but it felt to me like, uh,
- 53:21Speaker 2: they just had a couple of those plays in this
- 53:23Speaker 2: game where they busted a coverage or they just weren't
- 53:27Speaker 2: quite on their P's and Q's from an assignment standpoint,
- 53:30Speaker 2: which you don't normally see with the Patriots defense, but
- 53:33Speaker 2: you did a little bit this week. So that I,
- 53:36Speaker 2: in general, there's that big picture thought in terms of
- 53:39Speaker 2: the assignments, but also you can't be giving up 50
- 53:41Speaker 2: yard touchdowns, right? Like you don't want to be giving
- 53:44Speaker 2: up big explosive plays like that through the passing game either.
- 53:49Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:50Speaker 1: I mean, it's a really good breakdown. I agree with it.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Just can't be having that on the back end.
- 53:54Speaker 2: Poach coverage. Quarters, family. Uh, it's, you know, Fangio kind
- 54:00Speaker 2: of stuff, you know, palms, poach, things like that, uh, are,
- 54:03Speaker 2: are all these tricks, you know, these are all these
- 54:05Speaker 2: coverages that they're using that they're really matching like vertical
- 54:09Speaker 2: stems out of these zones. And, uh, it gets tricky
- 54:12Speaker 2: because sometimes the safety gets over the slot and now
- 54:15Speaker 2: the safety has got to cover a receiver, uh, over
- 54:17Speaker 2: the slot. And sometimes those foot races don't go so
- 54:20Speaker 2: well for those safeties. So, uh, that'll do it. That was, uh,
- 54:23Speaker 2: look at the timing on that one. 10 54. We
- 54:26Speaker 2: landed the plane perfectly there. A little bit of a
- 54:30Speaker 2: housekeeping tomorrow, the show 10 to 11 bears preview. Obviously
- 54:35Speaker 2: the game is Thursday night, so we're not going to
- 54:37Speaker 2: do the show Thursday. We're going to do it Wednesday.
- 54:40Speaker 2: So we'll be back tomorrow. So no time in between
- 54:43Speaker 2: here really. for us on catch 22 to preview one
- 54:47Speaker 2: of the games of the year that I wish was
- 54:49Speaker 2: not on a Thursday night, Alex, because this is like
- 54:52Speaker 2: our kind of game, right? We got Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Like this is our argument coming to life. This is
- 55:00Speaker 2: the manifestation of our two sides of the street right here.
- 55:04Speaker 2: So we'll talk about it tomorrow. We'll talk about my Ben,
- 55:07Speaker 2: my guy, Ben Johnson and the offense. And some of
- 55:09Speaker 2: the myths about that offense that I want to go
- 55:11Speaker 2: over as well. I can't wait for that. But we'll
- 55:14Speaker 2: see you guys then. So Wednesday, 10 to 11 for
- 55:17Speaker 2: the Bears preview. Alex, thanks for pushing through, buddy. I
- 55:20Speaker 2: hope I see you tomorrow. Maybe.
- 55:23Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 55:24Speaker 2: We'll see. Well, we'll see.
- 55:26Speaker 3: All right.
- 55:26Speaker 2: I can't hear him anymore. All right. Anyways, we're wrapping
- 55:29Speaker 2: it up. We'll see you guys tomorrow. Hey, this is Deuce.
