- 0:00Speaker 1: Yes, I'm Nick, member of Halfway Line on guitar and
- 0:05Speaker 1: also kind of guess co organized a promoter for Echo's festival.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Fantastic net thanks for joining us to start tonight.
- 0:15Speaker 3: Awesome to be here.
- 0:16Speaker 4: So, as you say, Bra, you're hosting Echo Festival twenty
- 0:19Speaker 4: twenty sticked in Adelaide on May the ninth, and what
- 0:22Speaker 4: is being builders of Australia's first ever dedicated post rock festivals.
- 0:27Speaker 2: So could you elaborate on that for us?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, So it really it's something that started especially
- 0:33Speaker 1: with Matt the you know, the founder, and came out
- 0:36Speaker 1: of him going overseas and you know, going to Dunk
- 0:39Speaker 1: Festival in Belgium, going a post festival in the US,
- 0:42Speaker 1: and I think those they're kind of really revered festivals
- 0:47Speaker 1: within this genre and this space, and they've got such
- 0:51Speaker 1: a unique community atmosphere and vibe to them, and so
- 0:54Speaker 1: I think, you know, coming home and looking at the
- 0:56Speaker 1: Adelaide scene, we're like, well, you know, there's no reason
- 1:00Speaker 1: this can't work here. We've been in the scene for
- 1:02Speaker 1: so long and we know what you know, all the
- 1:04Speaker 1: bands around here and all that, you know, the people
- 1:06Speaker 1: who really love this music and support it and so
- 1:08Speaker 1: I think it was kind of just that that thing
- 1:10Speaker 1: about why why can't we make.
- 1:11Speaker 3: This happen ourselves?
- 1:13Speaker 1: And you know, you hear the origin stories of those
- 1:14Speaker 1: festivals as well, and Dunk started as a fundraiser for
- 1:17Speaker 1: a basketball team, so it's like.
- 1:19Speaker 3: You know what, like we've we feel like we've been
- 1:21Speaker 3: doing this for a while.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Now, let's let's actually just stop dreaming about something like
- 1:26Speaker 1: this happening in Australia.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Let's be the ones to make it happen.
- 1:29Speaker 4: And it's just the first festival to actually put on
- 1:31Speaker 4: of any kinds together.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Yeah, first first festival.
- 1:34Speaker 1: So we've done lots of like gigs over the years
- 1:36Speaker 1: and stuff like that with all the various bands we've
- 1:38Speaker 1: been in, but first kind of taking it to that
- 1:41Speaker 1: next level of like this is this is a true
- 1:43Speaker 1: festival we want to start here.
- 1:45Speaker 2: A lot of bloody work in it, yeah, definitely realizing that,
- 1:51Speaker 2: but it's all fun work, which is good.
- 1:54Speaker 4: The event's going to be held over two venues at
- 1:56Speaker 4: the Rhino Room and Low Life Far over two stages
- 1:59Speaker 4: that are back to back per venue, So what was
- 2:02Speaker 4: the thought process by doing.
- 2:03Speaker 2: It that way? Yeah?
- 2:04Speaker 1: So I think they're really perfectly positioned because their Low
- 2:07Speaker 1: Life is in the basement.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Of Rhino Room, so right right next to each other.
- 2:11Speaker 1: But I think it's it's that thing of, you know,
- 2:14Speaker 1: you want to be able to just have music going
- 2:15Speaker 1: back to back to back, not be having you want
- 2:18Speaker 1: to give bands the best ability to put on their
- 2:20Speaker 1: best show, not be rushing just a line check, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 1: trying to keep everyone interested during all the lulls. So
- 2:27Speaker 1: it's just being able to have those bands going back
- 2:29Speaker 1: to back and just people being to move between that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So it's it's, you know, it's the best experience for
- 2:34Speaker 1: the punters, and also making sure that we actually set
- 2:37Speaker 1: the bands up to put on a really really great show.
- 2:41Speaker 4: There's going to be troll bands playing all up roight,
- 2:43Speaker 4: So can you briefly introduce this to each band and
- 2:46Speaker 4: sort of tell us what their role.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Is on the day.
- 2:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Sure.
- 2:49Speaker 1: So firstly, we've got Halfway Line and so that's the
- 2:53Speaker 1: one we're in, so we'll we'll be opening on the
- 2:55Speaker 1: on the Rhino Room stage. And then we've got Geomance,
- 3:00Speaker 1: who is actually their first gig that they're doing. So
- 3:03Speaker 1: they're really really awesome four piece. I believe they are
- 3:06Speaker 1: now kind of a bit more in that sort of electric,
- 3:09Speaker 1: ambient sort of post rock kind of space.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And then Mountains Below.
- 3:15Speaker 1: We've got next, So they're they're really awesome, another three
- 3:19Speaker 1: piece that really sort of very riffy, driving sort of sound,
- 3:24Speaker 1: and then they'll be followed up closely with Spires, and
- 3:27Speaker 1: so Spires I think, you know, one of those really
- 3:30Speaker 1: really exciting bands is coming out of Adelaide at the moment,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and that was you know, big focus for us of
- 3:35Speaker 1: like who are we've got those established Adelaide bands, but
- 3:38Speaker 1: also who are those ones that are kind of, you know,
- 3:40Speaker 1: just coming into the scene, you know, more recent years.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And I think they've they've got a really unique sound
- 3:45Speaker 1: that I've really been enjoying listening to and putting on lately.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I've got We See Moons and so they're very much
- 3:54Speaker 1: that instrumental post rock kind of sound. They've got Matt
- 3:59Speaker 1: is in there as long guitar, so I think that
- 4:01Speaker 1: was his way of getting over you know, he plays
- 4:04Speaker 1: drums for us in Halfway Line, and he's always been
- 4:06Speaker 1: giving us riffs, and I think We See Movies kind
- 4:08Speaker 1: of came out of that for him. And so he's
- 4:10Speaker 1: been doing some really really cool stuff there with I
- 4:12Speaker 1: think bringing the visuals and like the music videos and
- 4:17Speaker 1: all that sort of stuff into the music as well,
- 4:19Speaker 1: and you know, creating a really interesting kind of combination
- 4:22Speaker 1: of the two in his sound, The Unset.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We go way back with The Unset.
- 4:28Speaker 1: I think first time I ever saw them in Adelaide,
- 4:32Speaker 1: they had their guitarist crowdsurfing in a tiny, like you know,
- 4:36Speaker 1: fifty cap room.
- 4:38Speaker 3: So always just a huge sound with them.
- 4:41Speaker 1: And I think they've done some really cool stuff lately,
- 4:43Speaker 1: opening for Carnival and bands like that, and so they
- 4:50Speaker 1: they've just really gone from strength to strength right now,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I think they've had some really cool releases, very
- 4:54Speaker 1: much blending kind of post and prog, and I think
- 4:57Speaker 1: that that you know, the vocal sound well of Ellie
- 5:00Speaker 1: and is just amazing to hear.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Him sing live.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Then we got The Slow Light and so those guys
- 5:09Speaker 1: really really awesome. Another one of the kind of big
- 5:11Speaker 1: bands that blends that kind of post and prog sound
- 5:14Speaker 1: bringing a bit more vocals in. I think that's one
- 5:16Speaker 1: of the really interesting things of this style of music,
- 5:19Speaker 1: Like there's always those two camps of like is it instrumental?
- 5:23Speaker 1: Can you know, have vocals and I think there's there's
- 5:26Speaker 1: bands like the Slow Light that you listen to them like, well,
- 5:28Speaker 1: there's absolutely no reason that we shouldn't have vocals because
- 5:30Speaker 1: I think it's it makes so much more to that
- 5:32Speaker 1: to the music in the sound as.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Well Kaiper, which they've.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Done another really really cool more in that electronic kind
- 5:40Speaker 1: of ambient sound.
- 5:41Speaker 3: So Dion, I.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Think it started as like a solo project with him,
- 5:45Speaker 1: and then he's expanded that sound out. So he's got
- 5:48Speaker 1: you know, the ambience, he's got the guitars, he's got bass,
- 5:50Speaker 1: he's got all that sort of different sounds coming in
- 5:52Speaker 1: as well. And just like I think you go to
- 5:55Speaker 1: his gigs and you just feel like you're in a
- 5:57Speaker 1: trance and you kind of go into it and you
- 5:59Speaker 1: just have like these amazing experience and then at some
- 6:02Speaker 1: point you just pulled out of it and you realize,
- 6:04Speaker 1: hang on his sets ended, and what have I just experienced?
- 6:07Speaker 1: That was you know, just zen'd out the whole time.
- 6:12Speaker 1: And then we kind of, you know, move into those
- 6:14Speaker 1: those interstate bands that we've got coming over. So skin Thief,
- 6:17Speaker 1: I think a lot of the ones are most excited
- 6:19Speaker 1: to see live so of you.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Know, the interstate ones.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I haven't actually seen them live before, but they've just
- 6:24Speaker 1: got that real heavy, driving, sort of riffy, almost like
- 6:28Speaker 1: post metal kind of sound.
- 6:31Speaker 3: And then we've got Bear the Mammoth, so I.
- 6:33Speaker 1: Think almost would call them Adelaide locals at this stage.
- 6:36Speaker 1: They you know, they love coming over to Adelaide. We've
- 6:40Speaker 1: we've again, we've played with them over many many years,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and I think, like, you know, the the complexity of
- 6:45Speaker 1: some of their parts and the way.
- 6:47Speaker 3: That they move, the rhythm of the melody and all that.
- 6:50Speaker 1: Sort of stuff around the band and just crazy, really
- 6:52Speaker 1: interesting layers between all of their music. That really excited
- 6:56Speaker 1: to see those guys again. And then we've got tree
- 7:01Speaker 1: Beard coming over very much that post rock, post metal
- 7:04Speaker 1: kind of We was lucky enough to see them at
- 7:06Speaker 1: the Bird's Robe anniversary shows in December, and I think
- 7:10Speaker 1: just that massive riffing wall of sound, like absolutely going
- 7:15Speaker 1: to blow people's faces off pretty much. And then the
- 7:19Speaker 1: one that we're all all looking forward to is you know,
- 7:21Speaker 1: Meniscus coming over for first time in over a decade.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I think just absolute legends of post rock globally, let
- 7:30Speaker 1: alone you know, just within the Australian scene. So I
- 7:32Speaker 1: think being able to have them come over. Those guys
- 7:35Speaker 1: are so keen to come and play in Adelaide, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: I think speaking to everyone that's you know, messaged us
- 7:40Speaker 1: since we now at the festival, people are so keen
- 7:42Speaker 1: to come and see Meniscus and finally experience that live
- 7:45Speaker 1: and again got to see them last year at Birds
- 7:47Speaker 1: Robes Anniversary shows over in Melbourne, and they're going to
- 7:51Speaker 1: be phenomenal. Those guys just are absolute prosash.
- 7:56Speaker 4: Man there was an interesting quite of the press release
- 7:59Speaker 4: and said Adelaide has long been underestimated as a music city,
- 8:03Speaker 4: like is it is it because of geographically is it?
- 8:07Speaker 4: Or is it because it's the smallest city like that.
- 8:09Speaker 4: There's some relay good bands come out of there. And
- 8:11Speaker 4: I was down there for Proper View recently that went off.
- 8:14Speaker 4: I was there for alien Ant Farm and Drowning Pool
- 8:16Speaker 4: and that went off.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So I think it's people are starting warm to the
- 8:20Speaker 2: lad music scene.
- 8:21Speaker 1: I think I think for sure, yeah, like it's it's
- 8:23Speaker 1: one of those ones that definitely may be able to
- 8:26Speaker 1: past decade would often get skipped over and like we'd
- 8:29Speaker 1: see you know, the bands they'd come and just do
- 8:30Speaker 1: the East Coast or I think that the one that
- 8:33Speaker 1: would always sting the most is when they do the
- 8:35Speaker 1: East Coast and then jump over us and go over
- 8:37Speaker 1: to Perth. But I think, you know, it's it's really
- 8:41Speaker 1: this festival is about. We know that there is an appetite,
- 8:45Speaker 1: We know that there's you know, passionate fans here, and
- 8:48Speaker 1: we know that this is something that can be feasible.
- 8:50Speaker 3: So it's it's also you know, we want we want.
- 8:53Speaker 1: To bring the scene together and actually make that big
- 8:55Speaker 1: statement of like there is you know, bands within especially
- 8:59Speaker 1: for us within the post rock gen were like those bands,
- 9:02Speaker 1: like there's an audience here that is absolutely dying to
- 9:05Speaker 1: see you guys, and we can.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Make it work in Adelaide.
- 9:08Speaker 4: Yeah, you sound very confimat as you should be. But
- 9:12Speaker 4: what is it about Echoes Festival you think will make
- 9:15Speaker 4: it work particularly in Adelaide.
- 9:18Speaker 3: I think really leaning on that kind of community.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Element that we that we're taking over, that we're taking
- 9:26Speaker 1: from like dunk and posts and stuff like that. So
- 9:29Speaker 1: it's not just one of those you know, big, big festivals,
- 9:33Speaker 1: let's cram as many people in and you know, have
- 9:35Speaker 1: everyone just sort of pushed around like cattle that we're
- 9:39Speaker 1: going to have enough space for people and also we've
- 9:41Speaker 1: got you know, Pedal Company and black Hole sound effects
- 9:44Speaker 1: coming through.
- 9:44Speaker 3: Like it's really.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Bringing together all those different elements to actually make it
- 9:50Speaker 1: feel more like a community family event as well, like
- 9:53Speaker 1: like as in not yeah, like as in we're all
- 9:57Speaker 1: part of this sort of postal family. And you get
- 9:59Speaker 1: that feeling when you go to all the all the
- 10:01Speaker 1: smaller gigs around Adelaide and it's like we actually just
- 10:03Speaker 1: want to bring everyone together for that in one big day. Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Now, being the first time you do an Echo's festival
- 10:10Speaker 4: made all the first of this kind anyway, Like, what
- 10:13Speaker 4: are your goals for the festival?
- 10:14Speaker 2: Like, what what's going to give it a passpark?
- 10:15Speaker 3: Pare sellout?
- 10:17Speaker 1: I think sellout is out our goal, you know, I
- 10:20Speaker 1: think we've got We've we're confident with you know, the
- 10:23Speaker 1: venues we've got that they're they're the right size and
- 10:27Speaker 1: especially seeing the appetite as soon as we announced it
- 10:31Speaker 1: for us, we're going for a sellout.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Sweetn't we could? People will get themselves tickets to find
- 10:36Speaker 2: out more information.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Www dot Echosfest dot live is where all the ticket
- 10:41Speaker 1: details are.
- 10:42Speaker 4: Fantasy Yeah, got an eye on the future, made have
- 10:45Speaker 4: you got plans for next year?
- 10:46Speaker 2: Are you just going to get through this one? Yeah?
- 10:48Speaker 3: I think we did.
- 10:49Speaker 1: On the day we announced it, we had so many,
- 10:51Speaker 1: so many other bands reach out to us that were like,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you know, from Adelaide and abroad of you know, this
- 10:56Speaker 1: is awesome, we'd love to you know, you guys doing
- 10:58Speaker 1: it next year. And I think we're like, we're one
- 11:00Speaker 1: hundred percent, you know, keen to do this next year.
- 11:03Speaker 1: But we also then have to pull ourselves back and
- 11:05Speaker 1: got got to focus, gotta makes on this year first,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and you know, let's all get around this year. But
- 11:11Speaker 1: very much there's there's one eye already looking at a
- 11:13Speaker 1: twenty twenty seven fantastic nic.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Well, thanks very much for you, Trivors. Been a pleasure
- 11:17Speaker 4: to speak with you. Echos Festival is on May the
- 11:20Speaker 4: night in Adelaide. Sounds like a cracker of bed mates,
- 11:23Speaker 4: so best to luck to you and hope she goes well.
