Latest / What's Your (Least) Favorite Scary Movie? / #236: We Summon the Darkness (2020)
Transcript
- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:11Hi, I'm Johnny Knoxville and welcome to the church grift.
- 0:17Well, what's your least very scary movie?
- 0:18This is the podcast where you talk about the goods, about the
- 0:20ugly and the absurd in all of our.
- 0:22Favorite and least favorite? Scary movies.
- 0:24Because we believe every horror movie rightfully has its fan
- 0:26base. Even if we don't always get it.
- 0:28My name is Travis. My name is Jesse, and it's
- 0:31October. It's the best time of the year.
- 0:36But on the show, what it specifically means is that we're
- 0:39getting a little something new for ourselves every week, with
- 0:42the exception of our of our franchise movie.
- 0:46But what we do is we take turns picking a movie that the other
- 0:49hasn't seen. And then we'll also watch a
- 0:51movie that neither of us has seen.
- 0:53And that's going to be decided by our Patreon bobbies.
- 0:56Yeah. So we're really excited to go
- 0:57ahead and get this kicked off. This has become a little October
- 1:00tradition for us and it's a lot of good fun.
- 1:03And this time we're starting off.
- 1:04This is my pick for something Travis has never seen, and it's
- 1:07called We Summon the Darkness. So we'll get into that in a
- 1:11minute. But first I want to go over some
- 1:13announcements. And that is that if you are a
- 1:16budget tier patron, your bonus episode came out over the
- 1:19weekend and it was a commentary track.
- 1:21Yeah. And this time it was over one of
- 1:23the best in the South franchise, Psalm 6.
- 1:26So go ahead and make sure you give that a listen.
- 1:30We had a lot of fun with it. We got Talia's commentary
- 1:33included. We got some snores in there,
- 1:35yeah. And there's also a moment where
- 1:37I let her outside. We were walking around with our
- 1:40new lav lav mics so. Yeah, we're, we're having fun
- 1:43with them. Yeah.
- 1:44So, all right, do we have any poll results, Travis, we do OK.
- 1:49OK, so last week we talked about Bride of Chucky and just wanted
- 1:54to see which style Chucky you guys preferred.
- 1:58So you get the stitched look that was introduced in Bride of
- 2:00Chucky and then also wanted to see if you prefer the OG good
- 2:04guy. So on Instagram, 47% stitched,
- 2:0753 OG good guy. Twitter 25% OG good guy, 75
- 2:13stitched. OK.
- 2:14So we're a little bit split up. Yeah.
- 2:17I prefer the stitch. I prefer the stitch too, and
- 2:20that's one of the things about this is like, I feel like the
- 2:22fan base is torn. Yeah, it seems that way with the
- 2:25pole here too. I think that's kind of cool
- 2:27though. Yeah, I mean, it's just such an
- 2:29iconic look though. I love the stitched face.
- 2:32It's so good. OK, that's that's it for purple.
- 2:35That was an easy one, this. Week easy peasy this time or now
- 2:39that means that it's on to the movie.
- 2:42So I've got some background information for we summon the
- 2:44darkness. OK, now the movie premiered
- 2:47February 26th, 2019 at the Mammoth Film Festival, but it's
- 2:50like official release date is April 10th, 2020.
- 2:55We watched it on Peacock, but as of the end of September, who
- 2:59knows how much this has changed. But it was available to stream
- 3:03on Peacock TV, Pluto TV, Plex Prime freebie, YouTube Premium
- 3:07or YouTube TV Premium. You can also rent it from Google
- 3:10Play or Fandango at home. So it's a fairly watchable
- 3:13movie. It's out there.
- 3:14It's available written by Alan Trezza, directed by Mark Myers,
- 3:19music by Tim Williams, who also did the composition for Pearl.
- 3:24Really. Wow.
- 3:25So I thought that was kind of cool, special effects makeup.
- 3:28I just put the head of the makeup department.
- 3:31Nobody was specifically listened listed as special effects, but
- 3:35the head of the makeup department was Rose Gerovich.
- 3:38Interesting. You know, and you mentioned the
- 3:40thing about Pearl there, but I saw some similarities between
- 3:44this movie and X, how it opened, you know what I mean?
- 3:48I could see that. Yeah, we get the little pastor
- 3:50guy. Yeah, you get the people on the
- 3:52road stuff at that gas station. Yeah, yeah, I see that.
- 3:55Got Johnny Knoxville. Yeah, Johnny Knoxville is a very
- 3:59important part of X, as we all know.
- 4:01Yeah, Starring Alexandria Daddario as Alexis, Maddie
- 4:05Hassan as Val, Amy Forsyth is Beverly, Ken Johnson is Mark,
- 4:10Logan Miller is Kovacs, Austin Swift is Ivan, and Johnny
- 4:14Knoxville as Pastor John Henry Butler.
- 4:17Got to say, this is probably one of the weirder casts we've had
- 4:20on the show. It is honestly, though, like it
- 4:23was one of those. It was like, oh, I know this
- 4:25guy, I know that guy, I know her, I know her.
- 4:28So I thought that was just kind of interesting that they all
- 4:30have, like, connections elsewhere.
- 4:33Yeah, for us. You know, it's like I said, it's
- 4:36just weird for me. It's weird.
- 4:38I don't know. If you're if you are wondering
- 4:41who is who, so Alexandria Todario, I personally love the
- 4:47Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D and she is the one who says, do you
- 4:52think? Do you think?
- 4:54Maddie Hassan, She is the sister.
- 4:56That's the Princess, the birthday Princess in Malignant.
- 4:59Amy Forsyth is in Hellfest and Logan Miller is in the Escape
- 5:04Room movies. And Johnny Knoxville is a
- 5:08stuntman best known for his work on a little franchise called
- 5:12Jackass. Yeah.
- 5:14That's the thing. It's just, it's so weird seeing
- 5:17him act. Yeah, we've heard him do like
- 5:20voice acting before, but like actually seeing him in a movie
- 5:23role? I've seen him in, he has one,
- 5:26it's called where he does like the Special Olympics.
- 5:29I can't remember what it's called, You know what I'm
- 5:31talking about. Yeah, I know what you're talking
- 5:33about. But other than that, oh, it's
- 5:35the ringer. That's what it's called.
- 5:36Yeah, yeah, yeah. But that's the only thing I've
- 5:38ever seen him, like, actually act in.
- 5:40I know that he wanted to be an actor originally.
- 5:42Yeah, yeah. Things things were different
- 5:45than. He was.
- 5:46He planned for. He got his foot into the
- 5:49industry however he could. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:52OK, Travis has time for our favorite game.
- 5:55Budget or button? This is an easy bug, Ted.
- 6:00Yeah. So bug Ted that I actually do
- 6:03not have the financials on it. Yeah, that's not surprising.
- 6:05That's what that's where we're at with that opening box office
- 6:09quote UN quote 6.7 thousand and a worldwide gross of 190,000
- 6:15this. Is during COVID, right?
- 6:16Yeah. So yeah, this kind of got fucked
- 6:18over with that. IMDb score 5.2 out of 10.
- 6:22OK. OK, I've got 3 movies.
- 6:25I chose 2020 for all of them since that seems to be the year
- 6:28that this is more credited towards.
- 6:30Yeah OK. And my theme is nerds.
- 6:34Nerds, nerds. Wait, who are the nerds in this
- 6:36movie? The the metalheads, they're
- 6:38nerds. Metalheads are nerds.
- 6:39I'm sorry, metalheads that are listening right?
- 6:41Y'all are nerds about your music.
- 6:43They are. They are kind of nerdy.
- 6:44You're right. Yeah.
- 6:45Yeah, so the first one I have is Scare Me because the authors,
- 6:49they're nerds about their craft. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:52That released October 1st, 2020. I don't have a budget or a gross
- 6:57for it. That was another one that went
- 6:59straight to streaming. Yeah, that's a good movie.
- 7:01Though it's a good movie, it's one I've actually thought about
- 7:04talking about on the show, so it's it's fun.
- 7:08That has an IMDb score 5.7 out of 10.
- 7:14Yeah. 2nd movie The Hunt. The wait, who's the nerd in
- 7:20that? The conspiracy theorists.
- 7:22Conspiracy theorists. Yeller nerds.
- 7:26Yeah, I guess they are kind of nerds, aren't they?
- 7:28Yeah. That released March 13th, 2020.
- 7:33Like literally the day before everything got shut down in
- 7:36Kentucky. Oh.
- 7:37Dude, Yeah, yeah, we. We saw it in theaters that day.
- 7:40Empty theatre, so I don't know if the box office would have
- 7:44been great for that one anyways 'cause it was empty, but then
- 7:47again we went in the middle of a weekday, so.
- 7:48Yeah, that one had that one. Between COVID and between the
- 7:53backlash for the story itself, it got kind of screwed over.
- 7:57On its theatrical run, it had a budget of 14,000,000 and a
- 8:01worldwide gross of 10.5 million. IMDb score of 6.6 out of 10.
- 8:05If you want our further thoughts on that, we covered.
- 8:07It So yeah, it's a really good movie.
- 8:09It's a real fun movie. And then finally, the babysitter
- 8:14Killer Queen. OK, I know who the nerd is.
- 8:17Yeah, Cole. Cole is just the nerd.
- 8:20Like, I got the standard nerd in the list too, right?
- 8:25The nerd. The nerd gets them in this one
- 8:27though. They.
- 8:27Always do they, Never not. That released September 10th
- 8:342020. I don't have a budget or a
- 8:36growth because it's a Netflix movie.
- 8:38It has a 5.8 out of 10 on IMDb though.
- 8:40OK. Yeah, that's a solid one.
- 8:42I like the first one better, but that one's OK.
- 8:45Yeah, I think the second one would have been a little bit
- 8:47better if they hadn't tried to turn the best friend into like.
- 8:52Hell of interest. No, not even that, because they
- 8:56had like their whatever going on in the 1st movie, their
- 9:02chemistry, so to speak. Yeah, but no, they tried to kind
- 9:07of make her copy some Mara Weaving's character from the
- 9:10first one, and it's just a little weird.
- 9:13Yeah, OK. Yeah, I can see that.
- 9:15Yeah, OK. I've got a few tag lines.
- 9:18OK. And there were several different
- 9:20posters, so I think that these were all on a different
- 9:23variation of the poster. OK.
- 9:27So the first one is let us pray. That, pray, is spelled PREY.
- 9:31I feel like we've seen that tagline before.
- 9:34Yeah, I. Swear we've seen that before.
- 9:39No, now that you say that, I do remember talking about.
- 9:41That, yeah, I don't, I don't know, like, I don't know which
- 9:45movie it would have been. We've got so many of them.
- 9:47Where? Yeah, we.
- 9:48Get the prey in the predator. But yeah, second one, OK, be
- 9:52careful what you pray for. Is that one?
- 9:57AY, yes, I would say why? I think it'd be funny if it was,
- 10:01you know, EY, be careful what you pray for, yeah?
- 10:05That would be pretty on though. Come on, it's a play.
- 10:10It's not a good play if you have to change grammar.
- 10:13I don't do play goods. I can't talk today.
- 10:18And then finally, it's gonna be 1 hell of a party.
- 10:22Oh. God, these are lame man, I'm
- 10:24sorry. That last one makes me think of
- 10:26that. I think you should leave a
- 10:27sketch where he's like and this is like a late night tour so we
- 10:31can say whatever the hell we want.
- 10:36Yeah, yeah, I'm not too inspired by this.
- 10:38So we're gonna have a lot to work with.
- 10:39Yeah, I think we we've, we've definitely got this.
- 10:42Yeah, yeah, yeah, OK. Fun facts.
- 10:45I don't have my like standard fun facts of like, you know,
- 10:48different production notes and stuff like that.
- 10:50Instead, I've got three different interviews.
- 10:53The first one is from Nightmarish Conjurings with Mark
- 10:56Myers. He got the script and he thought
- 10:59it seemed really fun. He thought it seemed relevant
- 11:02beyond just like a horror genre film, what with like the
- 11:06creating fear to control people kind of thing.
- 11:09And his wife, who has been his like producer, she also agreed
- 11:14and thought it would be like a really good script for them to
- 11:16do. The bonfire scene was shot in
- 11:19one night and in between takes they were like blasting heavy
- 11:23metal on the set to keep everybody in like the vibe of
- 11:26the party. Oh, that's cool.
- 11:28I. Like that, Yeah.
- 11:30And then I also got this really cool quote about music from him.
- 11:35A music supervisor told me that when they look at the habits on
- 11:37Spotify or iTunes, that if you love other kinds of music, you
- 11:41sample lots of other kinds of music.
- 11:42You might listen to mostly rock, but you listen to some jazz,
- 11:45some classical, some folk. You're open to pop.
- 11:48But the people who love metal, they generally almost only
- 11:51listen to metal. So we knew we were making a
- 11:53movie that had a very loyal core audience.
- 11:56Yeah, metal's like the horror of the the music genres.
- 11:59Yeah, the hardcore fans, they argue about different sub
- 12:03genres. They've got all of this obscure
- 12:05knowledge. That's the weird thing.
- 12:07I feel like that that's the one part of me being a horror fan
- 12:11that I feel out of place on because I'm not a metal fan at.
- 12:13All like. I just, I don't gravitate
- 12:15towards that at all. But I love horror.
- 12:18Yeah, which is the metal of the video.
- 12:20Cinema. Cinema yeah I'm doing my best
- 12:23it's early okay I'm. Doing my best yeah, our
- 12:26recording schedule got really thrown off this weekend and
- 12:30we're both kind of struggling to get there.
- 12:33Yeah, okay. This next interview was Collider
- 12:36with Alexandria Daddario. So she her favorite scene with
- 12:43because they asked her what her favorite scene was with Maddie
- 12:46Hassan because those characters especially seemed to really
- 12:49click and they just wanted to hear about their chemistry.
- 12:51Maddie was the blonde, right? Yes.
- 12:53OK. And she said it was in the
- 12:54kitchen when they were, like, eating Twinkies and just being,
- 12:57like, stupid. And apparently she said, you
- 12:59know, there was some improv in the movie, but the script itself
- 13:03was also really solid. So she was like, honestly, I
- 13:06don't even remember if this was scripted or not, like, because
- 13:08the script was so strong. Yeah, as it was, she said Johnny
- 13:13Knoxville was like incredibly concerned with safety because of
- 13:16his past experience with being a stunt coordinator and also
- 13:19knowing exactly how wrong things can go.
- 13:22So he's very concerned with thinking, sure, everybody was
- 13:23safe throughout. Interesting.
- 13:25I wonder if he was like present on set because his character
- 13:29doesn't really do anything. That was like, oh, I'm going to
- 13:32hurt you, You know what I mean? Yeah, well, she said that she
- 13:34didn't really get to work with him a whole lot because he was
- 13:36really. They're barely together, yeah.
- 13:39So that that was her main take away from him was that he was
- 13:42just like, wanted everything to be safe.
- 13:44And finally, the hair crimper that they used from her hair was
- 13:47actually from the 80's. The hair stylist had found it in
- 13:51a box of like, stuff from like her ex-boyfriend.
- 13:54Oh, really? Yeah.
- 13:55So the the crimper was actually like an 80s crimper.
- 13:57So I think that's like a fun little detail because crimpers
- 14:00are kind of making a comeback. So in my head, I was just like,
- 14:03OK, that's, you know, perfect timing for, you know, a style
- 14:06thing to come back. But no, this is legit.
- 14:10Like, honestly, I'm watching this movie and it could be
- 14:14today, yeah. It doesn't.
- 14:15It really could. So like whenever I'm watching, I
- 14:18wasn't really picking anything apart.
- 14:20I go, that's not a 80s, that's not a days.
- 14:21I'm like like, I don't know, I guess it's the 80s or is this
- 14:25today? Because like it could be either.
- 14:26Like you got the mullets, the strong mullets in this.
- 14:29Well, until, until the stepmom comes in and she's like, I
- 14:33called your father from the car phone.
- 14:36But she's all coked up too, so maybe she's just like, you mean
- 14:40cell phone? OK, and then finally I've got an
- 14:44interview with Maddie Hassan for Pop Horror.
- 14:48So she actually originally auditioned for the role of Bev,
- 14:50but Mark Myers was like, I don't really see you as Bev.
- 14:54But the role of Val was already taken by somebody.
- 14:57So she just was like, OK, I guess I don't get to be a part
- 15:00of this project. And then he calls her up and
- 15:01he's like, hey, that actress we had for Val had to drop out.
- 15:04Do you want to come on board? And she goes, sure.
- 15:06Do you want me to come in and read for the part?
- 15:07And he goes, Nope, you're you're able to just come on in for it.
- 15:10And she was like, all right, no turning back now.
- 15:13And she said, like, she's a person that swears a lot already
- 15:16anyway. But she says she thinks this is
- 15:18like the most, like, vulgar language she's ever used on a
- 15:20set. Like they're all just very free
- 15:22and open with stuff. Yeah, that's a, that's a
- 15:23dramatic shift in character right there.
- 15:26You got him in person and then that.
- 15:29Yeah, and then finally I actually got some technical
- 15:32details from her interview a little bit.
- 15:35This was shot in Manitoba, Canada.
- 15:38Took about a month to shoot and everything was shot at night.
- 15:41Everything, even the daytime scenes.
- 15:45Everything was shot at night, that's what she said.
- 15:48Like I don't know, it was a weird creative choice.
- 15:51Like they had to do some post production and like make it look
- 15:54like daytime but everything at night.
- 15:57All right, before we go into a good, bad, ugly and absurd, I'm
- 16:00just going to explain why I picked this movie for you.
- 16:03And as it goes, I was laid up at home earlier this month after
- 16:06like some medical stuff. And I was just, you know,
- 16:09watching movies all day as you do in that scenario.
- 16:12And I found this, the poster caught my attention.
- 16:16And then I saw it was Alexandria Daddario and Johnny Knoxville.
- 16:19And I was like, well, I've got an hour and 25 minutes.
- 16:23I'm not going anywhere. They knew what they were doing
- 16:25by throwing those two on the. Post yeah.
- 16:27Those two together, Oh my God, I see what this is.
- 16:31And I actually had a really fun time with it and I was texting
- 16:34Travis about it and we made a whole thing watching the other
- 16:38people's other movies that night.
- 16:40Oh, we did, didn't we? We got.
- 16:41Home from work, Yeah. We did our thing cuz and then we
- 16:44did some Jack gas. Yeah, Yeah, we did.
- 16:47I didn't do escape room, so I haven't done.
- 16:49You did that one. Without one.
- 16:50Yeah, I did that one without you.
- 16:52Yeah. So yeah, that's what that's why
- 16:56I picked this. So I'm very excited to hear your
- 16:58thoughts and let's go ahead and start off with the good.
- 17:00OK, so this is AI like the premise for this, and I think
- 17:06that whenever we introduce the metal heads, like when they
- 17:11arrive at the show, that's when the movie starts to finally get
- 17:13rolling. The build up at the beginning is
- 17:16kind of slow. It it's kind of at first like
- 17:20this is not a movie that immediately grabs me.
- 17:22But once we get like the other characters there and they start
- 17:25to interact, I like their chemistry.
- 17:27I think that they have fun together.
- 17:29I like those characters a lot. Those guys, they're just like
- 17:32fucking around. And I think that's so funny
- 17:35because I was immediately grabbed by the girls.
- 17:38Chemistry. Yeah.
- 17:39In the car. And I think it's just funny
- 17:40because those were our different experiences growing up with our
- 17:43friend groups because like they're.
- 17:44I guess it's true. And how they are in the car felt
- 17:46very real to me. Yeah, I guess that's true
- 17:49because the chemistry with the guys felt real to me.
- 17:51Well, I also agree about that I've got some specific points I
- 17:55want to make when it's my turn. OK.
- 17:58And like, I was worried that this was going to be like, they
- 18:04get a target, they get them, they move on to the next.
- 18:06But I like that we stuck with this group of people at that
- 18:10house. Once it gets to that location,
- 18:12that's when the movie really takes off for me.
- 18:14Yeah. Because I didn't expect it to be
- 18:17like, AI thought it was going to be like a more drawn out
- 18:19process. Yeah.
- 18:20But then whenever they already get them tied up and they kill
- 18:24Ivan was his name. Yeah, Yeah.
- 18:26And then like, it becomes like a Survive the Night type movie at
- 18:30that point. I'm like, oh that's fun.
- 18:32Even in the horror movie with six man characters, the bassist
- 18:37gets no goddamn respect. It's usually the drummer, man.
- 18:41They make the drummer out to be the hero in this movie.
- 18:44The front man's the guy that just kind of like, keeps getting
- 18:47shit, but like, still he refuses to die until he does eventually,
- 18:51but still. But yeah, no, you're right.
- 18:55This is a pretty fun movie. Yeah, I had a good time with it.
- 18:59I like the way that it resolved too.
- 19:02Yeah. So for me specifically with
- 19:05their their chemistry, I thought Logan Miller did a really good
- 19:09job of playing that like cringe try too hard guy.
- 19:13But like once he got drunk enough and just started being
- 19:16normal, like you're like, I get why people are friends with him,
- 19:19but at first you're like, Oh my God, you're so obnoxious.
- 19:21Why is anybody friends with? You no, that's the that's the
- 19:24energy right there that you see your friend doing where like
- 19:27you're like, oh, they're just being stupid.
- 19:29You're trying too hard. You're yeah, you're trying too
- 19:31hard. You're wanting like all of the
- 19:33attention right now. And at one point, the other guys
- 19:35even call him out. On it, Yeah.
- 19:36It comes across desperate when you do that.
- 19:38Yeah, just yeah. Come on man.
- 19:40I loved their like metal talk and I like how you could tell
- 19:43that Alex is a big fucking faker because she didn't even try to
- 19:48have that much knowledge ready at hand.
- 19:50And the other side of it was Val was too over prepared like
- 19:55knowing the exact date of her first concert and everything
- 19:58whereas Bev is just there like very casual like with all of her
- 20:01stuff. I could probably date some of
- 20:03like the concerts, like some of my big concerts, like I think
- 20:07the biggest one that we the first big one that I ever did
- 20:12was probably Arctic Monkeys, Black Keys 2012.
- 20:17Yeah, I couldn't tell you the exact date.
- 20:19No, I can't tell you the date. I know it was March cuz it was
- 20:22like very shortly after we started dating and it was spring
- 20:24break, but I couldn't tell you the exact date of that.
- 20:27And we drove to a tornado. Yeah, that's good.
- 20:30Got very delicious coffees in the city center.
- 20:32Yeah. But yeah, I guess you're right.
- 20:34I can't, I can't pinpoint the date.
- 20:36Yeah. I also, I really like, I saw the
- 20:40twist coming that the girls were gonna be the killers, but I
- 20:45didn't see that they were actually like church people that
- 20:50that like forced manufactured satanic panic was the actual
- 20:55twist for me. So I thought that they didn't
- 20:58really give a shit about anything.
- 21:00No, she said. She doesn't care about like the
- 21:03the devil worship aspect of it. They were just trying to like,
- 21:05get people to come to the church because they're afraid of these
- 21:08satanic killings. Yeah, OK.
- 21:11Well, yeah, she doesn't. Believe in the thing that she
- 21:13was creating fear for, but she just knew that it was like
- 21:16getting more people to the church and specifically more
- 21:19donations to the church. I got you that her father was
- 21:21then using to get them rad pads as Bev put it.
- 21:26Yeah, OK. Yeah, so I, I, I liked that.
- 21:31And I, again, the whole ensemble cast, they just had such good
- 21:35chemistry. Like I've, I know that party.
- 21:38I've been at that party, you know.
- 21:39Yeah, yeah, that's true. OK.
- 21:43Are we on to bad? We are on to bad.
- 21:44All right, so first of all, that twist I wrote in here, I don't
- 21:51see it. I could see it from like the
- 21:54beginning. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 21:56Like, I and that's the thing, like, did they mean for that to
- 21:59be hidden? Because they play it as if it's
- 22:02like a oh, but you all didn't get that.
- 22:05But y'all didn't see that one coming, did you?
- 22:07Like, no, it's like you kidding me?
- 22:10Everything building up to it was so obvious.
- 22:12Yeah. Even the way it was shot and
- 22:14acted out, it was just like, OK, this is kind of underwhelming.
- 22:19Yeah. So.
- 22:21That, that was my problem with it too, is that I think it could
- 22:24have been reworked a little bit to make it more ambiguous who
- 22:28was actually behind the killings, because those elements
- 22:30were there in the script. You know, like, because the
- 22:32girls are interested in listening to the radio stuff,
- 22:34but then we get to the boys who are like, arguing over how many
- 22:39killings have been done. They plant the book in the van
- 22:42like the satanic murder book or whatever, but like.
- 22:47But Mark and Mark has a switchblade.
- 22:48But then we, we as the audience are also seeing like, Alexis
- 22:52getting on to Beverly for not, you know, seeming like she's up
- 22:56for this. Yeah.
- 22:57And I think that they wanted that to come across as like, oh,
- 23:00she's like never like been with like in a relationship or some
- 23:03shit like that before. And like, no, like it's so
- 23:05obvious that this is building up to like a thing.
- 23:08And I think it's because there's just there wasn't a lot of
- 23:12detail about this in the interview that I was talking
- 23:15about with Myers, but he kind of mentioned how the original
- 23:19script was a little bit more wink, wink nudge, nudge.
- 23:22And they tried to make it seem a little bit more based in reality
- 23:27and less like 4th wall breaky. So I wonder if maybe this was
- 23:30originally written out to be a little bit more like campy,
- 23:34like, oh, is it them? Is it them?
- 23:36You know what I mean? Like kind of playing with the
- 23:38tropes of a horror movie. I.
- 23:39Think if like you just go into and you acknowledge that we
- 23:45already know it and you play on that, I think that would have
- 23:48benefited this better. Yeah, you absolutely can watch
- 23:51movies and you know that this person's a bad guy, but still,
- 23:53watching them reveal themselves to their target is fun.
- 23:57Do it in like, but you got to do it in a way that is unexpected.
- 24:01Yeah, like the whenever they did this shit with the drinks, like,
- 24:05oh, whatever. Like, I've seen that in like 5
- 24:07million movies and that, you know, that's fine, but it was
- 24:10just underwhelming in this situation.
- 24:12Yeah, OK. So yeah, that I, I'm sorry, but
- 24:18like I, I think some of the performances were really weak in
- 24:21this. I think Alexandria Daddario over
- 24:24acts a little bit too much in this.
- 24:26I think this is out of her wheelhouse here.
- 24:28I loved her acting in this because she went through, she
- 24:32went through a lot of different like levels of mania she did and
- 24:38it was fun to watch for me. I I think the director needed
- 24:42this like take her aside and be like, hey, reel it in just a
- 24:45tad. Like if they were doing the over
- 24:47the top performance like the original script called for, then
- 24:51sure. But this right here, this guy
- 24:53definitely tried to play this straight.
- 24:55I'm gonna say, though, I think some of this is just Alexandria
- 24:59Daddario because reading that interview with her, there was a
- 25:04lot, you know, the scene where she's outside talking to the cop
- 25:07and she's trying to, like, play up the teenagers sensibility and
- 25:10she's like, like, like, like, you know, that wasn't a lot of,
- 25:13like, they just transcribed exactly what she said.
- 25:16Oh, really? Yeah.
- 25:17And it was a lot of that. I just she might not be a good
- 25:21actor. I liked I'm gonna disagree with
- 25:24you, and that's fine. That's what we're here for.
- 25:26But I think she did a wonderful job.
- 25:29OK. And I think the other girl, I
- 25:35think they both, I think that I just think both of those
- 25:38performances were too over the top for this.
- 25:44I thought hers was fun because she's a very specific archetype
- 25:49of person and I thought it was fun.
- 25:52Again, I think this comes down to the movie.
- 25:55The script was written differently than how it ended up
- 25:57being shot. See, I think that they were on
- 26:00the right track with this really.
- 26:02Like I'm, I'm saying it's the performances, but in reality,
- 26:05this is, this might be a directing criticism here where
- 26:08the person needs to be like, hey, come on, like I need to get
- 26:12this separate performance for this type of scene right here.
- 26:15And like, I like the energy. But yeah, you know, like, let's
- 26:18redirect it in like a better way.
- 26:21OK. I don't know.
- 26:23Maybe like another watch would give me like a better idea of
- 26:26what I would want from that. But yeah, OK.
- 26:30That's pretty much it from the bad though.
- 26:31OK. Oh, and OK, nevermind.
- 26:34Nah, Johnny Knox was just kind of weird.
- 26:37He's not, he's not a great actor.
- 26:38I'm sorry. He's not a great actor.
- 26:40Like, he's great as a stuntman, but like.
- 26:44This didn't seem like the role for him.
- 26:46No it doesn't. I we had King of the Hill on
- 26:50while we were asleep and I woke up and it was the episode with
- 26:53the earth cleaners where he's picking up the poop with Bobby.
- 26:56That was a good role for him. Yeah, yeah, He does that well, I
- 27:01just think like, oh, really? It's like you're putting on your
- 27:04serious face, Johnny, come on. Oh.
- 27:06Serious. Come on, Jonah.
- 27:08Yeah, it's just Yeah. Yeah.
- 27:13OK, that's that's all I'll say for bad.
- 27:15OK, I didn't realize you had more bad when I was jumping in
- 27:18about the scope of stuff. That was my bad.
- 27:20Oh, that was. Yeah, that was.
- 27:22My bad. Was like, I, I think that they
- 27:24needed to, if they weren't gonna do the wink, wink, nudge, nudge
- 27:29play. If the humor part of it, the,
- 27:31the understanding that the audience knows what we're
- 27:33watching, then they needed to kind of temper those little
- 27:37hints and make us feel more ambiguous about the two
- 27:41different groups. So that way we actually are
- 27:43wondering who is the bad guy here?
- 27:45Yeah, but they, they just didn't really do that.
- 27:47Like I said, for me the main twist was to find out that they
- 27:49were like church ladies. Yeah, that that is A twist.
- 27:53I mean, but even like, I don't care if I know it's the like the
- 27:56women that are the bad people, like, just make it a fun ride.
- 28:01That's all I need. OK.
- 28:03All right. So ugly.
- 28:04Yeah. Well, there's a couple of things
- 28:07you could pick from here. I'll I'll choose the pastor.
- 28:10Just doing mega church shit and just, you know, taking all of
- 28:15these donations from people and just capitalizing on getting all
- 28:20of that fear out there and making people scared so they
- 28:22have to go to church and then they just profit off of it and
- 28:25they get, yeah, fucking private jets and giant mansions and
- 28:28shit. We saw his house.
- 28:29Yeah. And some of it wasn't even like
- 28:31cash money, although he had a lot of that.
- 28:33Some of it was getting like the deeds to homes transferred to
- 28:37him. That's so fucked up.
- 28:39Yeah. So that's a big ugly.
- 28:41Yeah, I'm gonna agree with that as the ugly because look, I know
- 28:48religion has done a lot of good things for a lot of people.
- 28:50It find it gives them like a place that they can feel safe
- 28:54and find that comfort and sense of community.
- 28:56But also, you do see shit like this, not just like the grifting
- 29:01from, you know, people that think they're like, giving their
- 29:05tithings to the church, but like, also abusing the people
- 29:11who need that sense of community.
- 29:12Because that was Beth's whole thing.
- 29:14She was supposed to be one of the ones that was in the group
- 29:17home for young women that he was supposedly taking all of those
- 29:21donations for. But instead they're using her to
- 29:26commit these murders and create this sense.
- 29:30Like, hey, here's like an organization for us to get you
- 29:32back on your feet and, you know, make the world OK for you.
- 29:35Actually, we're gonna make you do some killings for us.
- 29:38Yeah. It's such an abusive power.
- 29:40Yeah. And it's just, it's not good.
- 29:42Yeah, I'm not, Just to be clear, I'm totally cool with people
- 29:45being religious too. It's just the people that take
- 29:47advantage. Of the people, yeah, that's,
- 29:48that's the main thing. So the and these are a very big
- 29:52example of that. So absurd.
- 29:56Man, excessive Twinkie sponsorship in this here.
- 30:01It's like in every single frame of the movie.
- 30:04I think it's because you're very new on your Twinkie journey.
- 30:09No. Like you are very new on your
- 30:11Twinkie journey. You had your first Twinkie look
- 30:13a month ago. Well yes, that's true.
- 30:15I'm not refuting that. I am saying in every shot of
- 30:19this movie there is a box of Twinkies and they bring it up
- 30:23verbally many times. Like this movie was brought to
- 30:25you by Twinkies. For sure they were a sponsor.
- 30:28There's no way they weren't. It's like we also see a lot of
- 30:31other things that are PBR. Yeah, we see PBR.
- 30:34They also mentioned Bush Light and we see 17 magazine a lot
- 30:41too. I feel like you're defending it
- 30:44like the Twinkies are like are like throughout the duration of
- 30:47the entire movie like they keep mentioning it.
- 30:50It's just so funny to me. I I'm not as bothered by it as
- 30:55you are. You are very hung up on the
- 30:57Twinkies. I'm not bothered by it, I think
- 30:59it's funny. If I was bothered by it I would
- 31:02put it in the ugly. Like these fucking bastards are
- 31:04trying to get me to buy Twinkies.
- 31:06How dare they. No that's fine.
- 31:09I also thought it was hilarious. How?
- 31:13Fuck what's the What's the dude from escape room's name?
- 31:16Logan Miller. His character's name is Kovacs.
- 31:18Kovacs I like he keeps getting the shit in of the stick in this
- 31:23movie and he doesn't die. He just keeps like every time he
- 31:27cuts away like, oh, he definitely died.
- 31:28It would go like cut back to him.
- 31:29He's like, Oh no, he's actually still alive.
- 31:32But like he eventually does. But I, I just like how like he's
- 31:35just like, he's so resilient in this movie.
- 31:38Like you just keep expecting it, but it never happens until it
- 31:41does. OK, my absurd is first of all,
- 31:49how much Val Peas I love that I love.
- 31:52I love a good character representation on screen.
- 31:55I feel seen. Also Johnny Knoxville in my
- 31:59horror movie. It's weird.
- 32:02It's great. It's great.
- 32:05Yeah. Those are my absurds.
- 32:08OK, all right. So time to raid it.
- 32:09Yeah, I think I'm gonna give this one a six.
- 32:13OK, I'm gonna give it a 7 1/2. OK.
- 32:17So we have a starting average of 6.75, yeah.
- 32:23Yeah, all right. Not too bad.
- 32:25Not too shabby, right? Ready to do that?
- 32:28It's Indiana 1988. Travis missed this.
- 32:33He was like, I knew we were in Indiana.
- 32:34I didn't know that we were in the 80s.
- 32:36And I was like, so you stopped reading after the word Indiana?
- 32:39And he's like, joke's on you, I didn't read that part.
- 32:41I was reading license plates. Yeah, I just saw the license.
- 32:43Plates, yeah, but I was. Confused because it was later on
- 32:46when she's talking about her first show and like wait 2020
- 32:49and you were your first show was in the 80s so like and you
- 32:53watched your virginity then like this is either a really dark
- 32:56story or like. You aged amazingly, so they're
- 33:01in the car. They're arguing about the
- 33:04purposes of makeup in terms of evolution and attracting maids.
- 33:08I I just got to attractionize like.
- 33:10This is what they're attractionize.
- 33:11Yeah, more or less. Val has to pee and Alexis is
- 33:14like, no, we we're not stopping. We just stopped less than an
- 33:17hour ago for you to pee. And then Bev's like, not to
- 33:19alarm anybody, but we're almost out of Ding dongs.
- 33:22I think she was kind of making that up to give Val a chance to
- 33:25go pee. Like she was throwing her a
- 33:27solid. So they stop at the gas station,
- 33:31where Val is like wiggling her butt while she's filling up the
- 33:35gas. Her performance in this entire
- 33:37movie, it's just that like, I feel like every chance they get,
- 33:40they're like are in strike a sexual.
- 33:41Pose that's meant to be her character.
- 33:43Her character's meant to be over sexual.
- 33:44OK, yeah, the cashier's watching who I wrote as the Reverend
- 33:50Knoxville condemning heavy metal.
- 33:53And he tells the the trio to be safe.
- 33:57Yeah. And then they're like, we'll be
- 33:59safe. And they're like, OK, yeah.
- 34:02I made a joke. I was like, we are the weirdos,
- 34:05Mr. And you're like, did that give something away?
- 34:07And I was like, no, I'm quoting the craft.
- 34:09But it did. I mean, at the same time,
- 34:11though, like, I already knew it right there.
- 34:13I'm like, I mean, I know these people are gonna be bad, you
- 34:16know? It's just so obvious.
- 34:18As they drive on, they're listening to a news story on the
- 34:21radio about three more being killed in satanic cult murders,
- 34:26and the total is up to 18. And Pastor Butler is condemning
- 34:30these murders. You.
- 34:33Got to do that. You got to condemn the murders.
- 34:34And that is like, I don't want to listen to this and changes
- 34:37the music. And as they're driving, a
- 34:40something hits their windshield. And it was a chocolate milkshake
- 34:43that this van threw out behind them and almost made them swerve
- 34:46off the road. It did look like shit.
- 34:49I would have. Been, Yeah.
- 34:50Worried at first because that's why they immediately thought too
- 34:52like Oh my God they actually threw shit at.
- 34:54But also like what was the point of it?
- 34:56Like I don't know. And they just being.
- 34:58Douchebags. Yeah, they were just being
- 35:00douchebags. Because it was too full for it
- 35:02to be like. That's a waste and these guys
- 35:05aren't pulling in money. Come on, you just wasted some
- 35:08money right there. Yeah, I don't think any one of
- 35:11them has ever turned down a chocolate milkshake.
- 35:13No, definitely maybe. Like maybe it was really bad.
- 35:17Maybe. Either way they yeah it causes
- 35:20them to pull over. And they have to clean it and
- 35:23Val Peas again. So they arrive at the venue.
- 35:28So I read that this parking lot scene was actually based off of
- 35:31like there's a documentary of the parking lot like tailgate
- 35:38pregame type thing before a heavy metal show.
- 35:40I forget what it's called. I wish I'd written it down, but
- 35:43this it was based off of, this whole scene is based off of that
- 35:45documentary. Like a particular band, they do
- 35:48this or just. In general, I can't remember.
- 35:52I thought that you would maybe know like the general like.
- 35:55No, that's that's all I have. OK for you.
- 35:58Sorry. All right, So they're in the
- 36:00parking lot and they're all just kind of pregaming, they're doing
- 36:03their tailgating. I didn't realize that tailgating
- 36:05was a thing for metal shows. This looks like one of those
- 36:09ones that we would have went to in like, a town of like, maybe
- 36:131000 people where, you know, they do it in, like, the old
- 36:16church or whatever. We've been in one of those
- 36:18before. And I think it actually was a
- 36:19metal show. But yeah, it's just a bunch of
- 36:21people there. And then the van pulls up right
- 36:25next to them, and they like another parking spot.
- 36:28And they recognize that that was the van that toss the milkshake
- 36:30at them. So they decide that they're
- 36:32going to get even. And they throw in some
- 36:35firecrackers, yeah, into the open window of the van.
- 36:38And the guys are upset until they call them out for being the
- 36:41ones that threw the milkshake and almost made them wreck.
- 36:43And they're like. Oops.
- 36:45Here, have a PBR as an apology. That's that's not a knife.
- 36:51That's not equivalent. No, you just like maybe nuke
- 36:54their entire fucking thing. OK, so it doesn't matter.
- 36:58Everybody's cool. What?
- 36:59I don't think they like it. Didn't seem like the van was
- 37:02really hurt by the firecrackers. No movie magic, whatever.
- 37:08It doesn't matter. They're they're having fun.
- 37:10They don't give a shit. They end up like apologizing for
- 37:13it and they say that they're gonna make it up, they're gonna
- 37:14give them drinks. So they toss them some PBRS and
- 37:16they started talking about metal shit, talking about their first
- 37:20band experiences. They're just kind of exchanging
- 37:22war stories, whatever. Like Jesse said before, Val is
- 37:26actually getting really specific about it.
- 37:28Everybody else is being vague. And then I like how Ivan's
- 37:32revealed that his first show was actually who was it?
- 37:35Again, Casey and the Sunshine Band.
- 37:37Casey and the Sunshine Band, which the reason that Kovacs
- 37:43knows about that is because their mom or his mom chaperoned
- 37:46into it. Yeah, I that's a relatable thing
- 37:49right there, too, because it's one of the things that, you
- 37:51know, you want to have the cred. But I think that that's one of
- 37:54the things, like, it's also endearing whenever you hear
- 37:57about stuff like that, like, oh man, you know.
- 37:59It also kind of like builds that history between them.
- 38:02They're all in a band together, but Mark's getting ready to move
- 38:04to LA to like, do music professionally.
- 38:08It's like the little silent type off to the side over there.
- 38:11So they're kind of caravanning following this tour for Soldiers
- 38:15of Satan around. Yeah, they're, they kind of
- 38:18liken it to dead heads. Is that what the yeah term is
- 38:23for the Grateful Dead people? Yeah, but they hate the dead
- 38:28heads because they're like, too hippie, I guess.
- 38:31I don't know. So they go inside and they're
- 38:34all having fun at the show together.
- 38:36Kovacs's nose gets broken in the Vadnais.
- 38:40This is why mosh pits suck. I hate mosh pits.
- 38:44People are like, oh hell yeah, I got my nose broken.
- 38:48March 11th 2020 I got hit really hard in the fucking nose in a
- 38:54mosh pit. Yeah, exactly.
- 38:56It's not worth it. I fucking hate them, but
- 38:58whatever. Everybody's like, oh, a mosh
- 39:00pits are like, they're so cool, Everybody's so nice.
- 39:03Which it's fine. Like I've seen, I've witnessed
- 39:05people save your shirt that one time it got trampled.
- 39:07Yeah, but like at the same time people don't really care about
- 39:11the surrounding people that don't want to participate.
- 39:13They still like bash in the end. Shit.
- 39:16OK, so the after the show, the guys kind of want to keep the
- 39:20party going and they're like, let's go to a bar.
- 39:22Well, there's not a bar nearby. Well, we could party in the van.
- 39:25It's kind of sketchy. Bev especially is a little bit
- 39:28nervous about all of this, but Val and Alexis end up convincing
- 39:31her to invite them back to Alexis's dad's house.
- 39:35And when they get there, they're parked kind of far away.
- 39:37They don't drive up the whole driveway.
- 39:38And Alexis is like, nobody needs to know we're here.
- 39:40Sketchy. It's a really nice house.
- 39:43It's a big mansion. Yeah, it's a huge place.
- 39:46I like their commentary when they're pulling up.
- 39:49I can't remember what he says. He's like, where are they
- 39:51millionaires? I've completely missed that line
- 39:54so I don't know what he said. OK, so inside they're all
- 39:59chatting and drinking, then they move outside to do like a little
- 40:02bonfire. This is where Bev is like
- 40:05getting nervous as they're all like chatting and getting, you
- 40:08know, more comfortable with each other.
- 40:10She goes inside and she's like taking a minute and Alexis comes
- 40:13in and kind of like pep talks her.
- 40:15She's you know, cuz she's like, I've never done anything like
- 40:18this. She's like, it's gonna be fine.
- 40:20We're all gonna have a great night together, and we'll never
- 40:22forget it. And as they're walking back
- 40:25outside, Mark bumps into her and accidentally, like, spills,
- 40:28drink all over her. And he gives her his jacket,
- 40:31which is a good thing. He's so teeny tiny.
- 40:33Because the jacket fits are really well.
- 40:35Yeah, he's a really scrawny dude, Yeah.
- 40:37Yeah, but as like she's putting on the jacket, the switchblade
- 40:41comes out of the pocket and he's like, oh, sorry, that's my
- 40:44brother's. And he, like, takes it back.
- 40:46And, yeah, so Alexis is giving the guys some drinks, and Bev's
- 40:53got some drinks for the women. And then she, like, kind of
- 40:59pulls out to the side and she's like, hey, you know, he's got a
- 41:02blade. And she's like, I'm not worried
- 41:04about it. Yeah, so now I think this is
- 41:07when they started playing Never have I ever.
- 41:09Yep. So they started doing, you know,
- 41:12the normal shenanigans with that right there.
- 41:15And then it eventually gets. Well, there was, like, a really
- 41:19nice moment because one was like, never have I ever been to
- 41:21jail. And Bev drinks.
- 41:23And Ivan's trying to get more information.
- 41:25And Bev is, like, giving off all of the signals that she doesn't
- 41:27want to, like, talk about it because she was arrested for
- 41:30shoplifting. He's like, oh, what's your
- 41:31shoplift? And she's, like, food.
- 41:33And he's like, wait, what? And like, Mark was like, just
- 41:37drop it. Yeah.
- 41:39Like. And this is kind of the hint
- 41:41that she, you know, had some trouble in her past.
- 41:45Yeah, usually if you're shoplifting, I guess food's one
- 41:48of the more forgiving shoplifting things because.
- 41:51Jean Valjean. Oh, yeah, I guess.
- 41:53But yeah, like, you know, people need food.
- 41:57Yeah, and they recognize that, so it gets a little bit more
- 41:59heated. Kovacs does.
- 42:03Never have I ever decided to abandon my Bros and go be a
- 42:07famous rock star in LA. And then this gets Mark a little
- 42:11bit upset. He just kind of walks away and
- 42:13everybody's like, dude, he's like, oh, too far.
- 42:15Yeah, and then the guys all start like getting weird, 'cause
- 42:18they're getting up and trying to like, comfort each other and
- 42:21stuff, and they're starting to feel weird.
- 42:22Mark falls over and then Alexa says, never have I ever drugged
- 42:27anybody's drink. And Ivan and Kovacs are like,
- 42:31that's fucked up. No, we've never done anything
- 42:33like that. And then all of the women drink
- 42:36and they're like, well, if you wanted to have sex with us, you
- 42:38could have just said, so you didn't have to drug us.
- 42:41And they're like, oh, that's not what this is about.
- 42:44And then they all end up passing out as they're trying to walk
- 42:46away. Yeah, they almost humiliate.
- 42:48They were like, oh, you thought we were going to have sex with
- 42:50you? Insult to injury.
- 42:53So they wake up, they're tied to chairs in the house now.
- 42:57Can I just say I'm really glad that there's no tidy whities
- 42:59here? Yeah, which is kind of
- 43:01surprising for the 80s. I think I'm, I don't know.
- 43:04I wasn't around in the 80s so I can't say for sure, but I would
- 43:06imagine. Yeah, according to movies and
- 43:08TV, we we would be led to believe that there's a lot of
- 43:11tidy whities. Yeah.
- 43:12So yeah, they've got them all tied up, and I guess the first
- 43:17target is Ivan. Yeah, So when they wake up, they
- 43:21see all of the symbols that are painted around this, like
- 43:23sunroom that they're in. And they they're like, oh, my
- 43:27God, you guys are the Colt murderer.
- 43:29And they're like, we can just leave.
- 43:30We won't tell anybody about this.
- 43:32And Alexis is like, that would be, you know, a swell plan if
- 43:35somebody hadn't slashed all of the tires on your van.
- 43:39Alexis says that she thinks like all of this stuff about the
- 43:43colds and heavy metals retaining panic, all of it's a crock of
- 43:46shit. They're members of a
- 43:48congregation and different members have been taking turns
- 43:51doing these different killings across the country to kind of
- 43:54create this panic, get people to turn to the church, make their
- 43:57donations, etcetera, etcetera. And this week, it's their turn.
- 44:00Is that real though? Like I feel like they're the
- 44:02ones that have been doing it. No.
- 44:04It would be weird if it was like a whole organization that was
- 44:07doing these across the nation. I do think that it was like
- 44:10different members of the congregation.
- 44:12Yes, I do think that was meant to be a real.
- 44:14Part. So it's all members of this one
- 44:16church that are doing this? Yeah.
- 44:19Damn, they got a lot of people involved in this here.
- 44:21It's a cult. It's not the cult that you know
- 44:24the news thinks it is, but it is a cult.
- 44:27I Yeah, OK. If they've all been brainwashed
- 44:32into doing this, yeah, I'd say that's called like behavior.
- 44:34OK, so they say that they like dress the part, act the part,
- 44:40and then they, the news will like fill in the rest.
- 44:46So even if these guys aren't like devil worshippers
- 44:50themselves, the news is just going to see what they see at
- 44:53this at the crime scene and how the guys were dressed.
- 44:55And they're just going to like fill in those blanks.
- 44:58They singled them out because it was like a metal, metal show,
- 45:00metal heads, people like that. Yeah, I then goes on like this
- 45:05tirade about like the hypocrisy of the church and especially
- 45:10Henry Butler. And then Alex stabs him in the
- 45:13throat and she's about to stab Mark.
- 45:16But Bev was like, hey, hold on, can we go talk in the bathroom?
- 45:20And she pulls her and Val in there and Kovacs and my Mark are
- 45:25laughed. And Mark tells him to use the
- 45:28spikes on his belt to cut the tape from the from their, which
- 45:34I thought his switchblade was gonna end up being more
- 45:36important for this. It never comes.
- 45:38Up. No, Yeah, it never comes up
- 45:39again. It feels like it should.
- 45:41Yeah. In my experience though, I've
- 45:44never had spiky accessories like that before.
- 45:47Are the spikes actually that sharp to where they can cut
- 45:49through something? Cut through your dock Cape now
- 45:53unless it's like real fucking cheap duct tape.
- 45:55Yeah, that would be like, really?
- 45:57That'd be some really uncomfortable belts to have.
- 46:00Right. Yeah, exactly like that.
- 46:02That's not that's not realistic. OK Bev says she wants to do the
- 46:06killing. She was like, you know, I was
- 46:08playing the part. It was all part of my ACT to act
- 46:10all nervous. But I want to do these killings.
- 46:12Like I want to show you guys that I'm in it.
- 46:14And Alexis agrees. And she's like, we need to set
- 46:16it up as a murder suicide. So you need to slice the other
- 46:19guys throat and then stab the drummer through the heart.
- 46:23So they step out of the bathroom and see the guys running for the
- 46:26door. They run after them, Alex
- 46:29slashes out at them and gets Kovacs in the arm.
- 46:33So they end up locking themselves in the pantry to try
- 46:36and keep them out. I love this scene where Val was
- 46:40like hold on get out of the way and she tries to jump at the
- 46:43door and it's so ineffective it is so funny.
- 46:46Yeah, I the beginning, like it made it seem like they were
- 46:51professionals at this right here.
- 46:52But then when it gets to this point right here, it kind of
- 46:55comes across like, oh, they, I don't really know if they know
- 46:57what they're doing. Yeah, it really shows that they
- 46:59don't know what they're doing. And I think that's interesting,
- 47:02an interesting way to like show this unfolding 'cause it's not
- 47:05like they've done this a million times.
- 47:07And that lends more credence to the idea that, like different
- 47:11members of the congregation did those other murders and not them
- 47:13'cause they would be a little bit better at this, presumably
- 47:16by now. Yeah, you'd think.
- 47:19So Alex sends Bev to the barn to find some tools to try and cut
- 47:23the door down with, and inside the pantry, Mark is tying a
- 47:28tourniquet around Kovacs his arm, but he's not doing a very
- 47:30good job. It's so fucking loose.
- 47:32There's no point to the tourniquet.
- 47:34Yeah, this guy's, he's just going to bleed out.
- 47:36This guy's doomed here. So now Alex has decided that
- 47:40she's going to take some kind of can.
- 47:42It looks like bug spray, like bug bombs and.
- 47:45She's going to just spray them out, like gas them in the room
- 47:49there and. It works for it seems like it's
- 47:51going to work for a second. But what he does instead is he
- 47:54finds a chair, wedges it under the door so they can't get in,
- 47:57and then he finds rags and shoves it under the crack at the
- 48:00door so that way the the poison doesn't come in anymore.
- 48:04At this moment, Alexis says stepmoms or stepmom arrives and
- 48:08she's like, why are you dressed like that?
- 48:10Was that a bump on your head? And she goes, well, we were at a
- 48:12costume party, and there were some really drunk guys, and they
- 48:15accidentally hit me. And she goes, OK, well, you know
- 48:17how you feel about those types of parties, and you should
- 48:19probably be careful. And you definitely need to
- 48:21change out of those clothes. And she goes, what are you doing
- 48:23here anyway? I thought you were going to be
- 48:25off on vacation. And she was like, well, I forgot
- 48:27my passport. And she goes upstairs.
- 48:30And what she's really going for is her a bottle of coke.
- 48:33Yeah. She forgot her cocaine there.
- 48:36Yeah, so she goes to do that. Meanwhile, Mark and Kovacs have
- 48:41decided that they're gonna the guy wear some shit.
- 48:44He takes some wine bottles and get some tape, and I don't know
- 48:48what the plan is here. What exactly?
- 48:50Kind of making some some weapons of some sort.
- 48:53Ultimately what it is is they just break the bottles just to
- 48:55get some sharp glass. I don't know what the tape is
- 48:58for. I think so that was it was
- 48:59easier to hold on to or so it didn't break in their hands.
- 49:03Maybe, yeah. Yeah, and Kovacs also drinks the
- 49:06soda because he's starting to get real cold.
- 49:07And he's like, get the blood sugar something to keep you
- 49:10going. Yeah, so they've popped the
- 49:13bottle, which Kai's like a big pop, which the set mom hurts and
- 49:17she wants to go investigate. Yeah, and Alexis is like pushing
- 49:22her out and she goes, OK, well, when the cops get here, just
- 49:24tell them it was all the fox alarm.
- 49:26She goes, you called the cops, she goes, yeah, there was a van
- 49:28outside and I saw the lights on. Of course I called the cops.
- 49:32I also called your father from the car phone.
- 49:33And she goes, you called daddy? And that like, kind of gets the
- 49:38stepmom nervous. And she here, she decides that
- 49:40she's going to look around some. And Alexis is trying her best to
- 49:43push her out, but she ends up making it to the sunroom where
- 49:46she finds Ivan's body. And so Alexis stabs her too.
- 49:51And Val is like freaking out. But Alex is like, we have to
- 49:55finish this before my dad gets here.
- 49:57Like, this has to be done. Meanwhile, in the barn, Bev has
- 50:01found a bunch of like, documentation about the murders
- 50:05from like, the newspapers and stuff where it's been being
- 50:07tracked. She also finds a transfer of the
- 50:11title and some house deeds. And she finds a ton of care.
- 50:16Yeah, I would have pocketed that shit.
- 50:18Yeah, well, I think she did this implication at the end.
- 50:21I would, yeah. I guess I hope she did, for her
- 50:23sake. Yeah.
- 50:24So and Alex and Val have decided that they're going to make a
- 50:27little makeshift flamethrower, so they're just sliding the door
- 50:31on fire. Yeah, they managed to actually
- 50:34put it out with like a jacket or whatever, but I'm surprised that
- 50:38they didn't just keep doing it cuz.
- 50:40Like, yeah. Maybe she doesn't want to burn
- 50:42her dad's house down. Well, the problem is at that
- 50:44point the cops arrive. True.
- 50:46Yeah, the. Cops get right, She goes out and
- 50:47she talks to the sheriff and she was just like, word vomiting at
- 50:51him, basically. And she was like, you know, and
- 50:53my stepmom came in and she was surprised.
- 50:55And we had my friend's van. And he goes, OK, can I talk to
- 50:58your stepmom? She goes, no, she, she laid down
- 51:00for a nap and she's just a nightmare to be woken up.
- 51:03And he's like. But I thought you said she was
- 51:04leaving on vacation. Well, yeah, I know.
- 51:06But she's decided that she's going to leave tomorrow because
- 51:08it's so late tonight. Yeah, he's asking all the right
- 51:10questions and catching her and all the YS there, so he decides
- 51:14he's going to go in and invest. Well, actually, no, she just
- 51:16books it. She runs.
- 51:18Yeah, because he's like, do you have any proof this is your
- 51:20home? Like, do you have any proof
- 51:22about anything you're saying? And I'm going to need you to
- 51:25step up to the vehicle. And she runs for the front door.
- 51:28And he follows and he enters the house and he's got his gun
- 51:32drawn. And he sees Mark and Kovacs as
- 51:34they're, like, trying to leave. They're asking for help.
- 51:36They're like, hey, these girls tied us up.
- 51:39They killed our friend. And he's like, oh, this is kind
- 51:42of fucked up that the cop is like, oh, you guys got killed by
- 51:45a bunch of girls. What, Like, dude, did he say
- 51:50that? Yeah.
- 51:51And he, like, starts to think that the guys are responsible
- 51:54for this. So he, like, tells them to get
- 51:56up against the wall and starts to cuff them.
- 51:57But at that point, Val comes up, takes his gun and shoots him in
- 52:01the head. This is so stupid though because
- 52:04he saw her just book it when she was being super.
- 52:06Suspicious and then when there are.
- 52:08Two bloody dudes. They're like, oh, they're trying
- 52:09to kill us. Nah dude, no way.
- 52:12Like come on, that's some. He was so smart and then he got
- 52:15like, dumb. There, as soon as he winded by
- 52:18his own misogyny. It's so stupid.
- 52:19Yeah, so Alexis and Val start arguing at this point because
- 52:25Val has shot the sheriff, but not the deputy.
- 52:28Not the deputy. And then the guys are back in
- 52:31the pantry yet again. Bev appears with a weed eater
- 52:34and she says she's going to free the free the guys and they're
- 52:37all just going to get out of here.
- 52:39And Val and Alex are like, hey, what are you doing?
- 52:41This is part of the plan. We took you in when you had no
- 52:44home, no family. Like we did everything for you.
- 52:47And Bev is like, you are taking advantage of me just like your
- 52:50dad has taken advantage of all of the church members.
- 52:55Boom. At this point, the guys jump
- 52:57out, Kovacs is stabbing at Bev, and Marcus is like, hold on,
- 53:01she's on our side. She goes, I'm not on anybody's
- 53:03side. I just want this to be over.
- 53:05My favorite part from that is when they're having that
- 53:07conversation and they can hear them through the door and
- 53:09they're like, don't worry, I'm going to save you guys.
- 53:11And he's like, fuck you like. I mean, I could see them
- 53:15thinking that maybe it's a fake out.
- 53:17Yeah, they've been doing it the entire time.
- 53:18They were like they were saying show like that from the get go,
- 53:21that try and wear them out like hey, we'll have a three-way with
- 53:23you. Like what the fuck?
- 53:24No. And then this is Kovacs is like
- 53:30very clearly not doing well. Mark wants to go attack Val and
- 53:33Alexis and Deb is like they have been brainwashed also.
- 53:38Like she was like, I don't want to be in this.
- 53:40She's like, I don't want anybody else to die.
- 53:41Like I want us to just leave. He's like, OK, well, can we take
- 53:44the Jeep? And she goes, Alexis has like
- 53:46he's. Did you mention that they fought
- 53:48over the gun for a minute? Now I missed all of that.
- 53:51Yeah, because like they, Alex wanted the gun from Val, Val
- 53:54didn't want to get the gun up. So they end up causing a fight
- 53:56between them, and then Bev got the gun and now that they broke
- 54:01out, Kovacs has the gun. Since he's kind of mostly
- 54:04defenseless, he can't really move around.
- 54:06They're just kind of prop him up in the corner.
- 54:07Yeah, well, they try. So Mark is going to go get the
- 54:10keys from Alex and he tells Bev to stay with Kovacs, but the
- 54:15power goes out, so she's got to go fix it.
- 54:17So that's when she props him into a corner and gives him the
- 54:19gun so that way he can defend himself.
- 54:22She is. She's about to go downstairs.
- 54:28Meanwhile, Kovac sees lights outside of a car pulling up, so
- 54:31he goes outside. It's the pastor, John Henry
- 54:36Butler. And he doesn't recognize him at
- 54:371st. And he's just like saying, hey,
- 54:39like, we were attacked. These things are happening.
- 54:41And the John Henry Butler is getting all this information
- 54:46from him about who's in there, what the situation is.
- 54:48And he goes, OK, give me the gun, son.
- 54:50And then he shoots him. Yep.
- 54:52Yeah, should have known, man. Yeah.
- 54:54And then he goes, I'm the wrath of God.
- 54:57It got so weird. Hi, I'm Johnny Knoxville, and
- 55:01I'm the wrath of God. That's basically what it is this
- 55:03year. So yeah, he goes inside.
- 55:05Yeah, downstairs Val attacks Bev, but then Bev lights her
- 55:11hair on fire and is able to get the lights back on, which is
- 55:15helpful because upstairs Mark grabs the keys from the dresser
- 55:20and Alex attacks, but when the lights come on, that helps him
- 55:23be able to see her so they can fight.
- 55:25Yeah, and they're fighting, and Johnny Knoxville's character,
- 55:29the pastor, comes in and shoots Mark while he's on top of Alex.
- 55:32Yeah, and then he berates Alex and she like, it was like, it's
- 55:36not my fault. It was that runaway bell.
- 55:38Like she went, she went rogue and she's not cooperating.
- 55:42And he's, like you said, she was ready for this.
- 55:45I'm just going to say they did a terrible job with her makeup and
- 55:49this right here with the special effects with the blood because
- 55:51it just looks like she has a huge handlebar mustache.
- 55:53Yeah, she got that mustache going on.
- 55:55Yeah. And he says, what we need to do
- 56:01is get the heat off of the church.
- 56:05And I chose you and I chose this house for a very specific
- 56:08reason. And then he starts choking her
- 56:09because he was like, nobody's going to suspect them if it's
- 56:12his own daughter at his own house.
- 56:14Like that throws the heat off of him.
- 56:16Like, it looks like she was attacked.
- 56:17And obviously that means that they can't be in on it.
- 56:20Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of flaws with that, but sure, you
- 56:25got this, Pastor Johnny. Yeah, Pastor Johnny.
- 56:31Then Bev comes in, hits him, which saves Alex, and she's like
- 56:34starts crying to her and she goes, we're victims, we're
- 56:36victims together. And Bev is not having it.
- 56:38So they start fighting and Bev manages to push her out the
- 56:42window. Oh yeah.
- 56:43Yeah, She finds Mark and helps him up, and they leave together.
- 56:48Kovacs has tried to crawl into the house, but he died.
- 56:53Poor guy. He finally, Yeah, he just.
- 56:56He finally did it. He was.
- 56:57He's like a slug. He like he was not going to go
- 57:01down without a fight, you know, respect.
- 57:04So they drive off. Alexis is standing in the
- 57:07driveway as they're pulling out. And we see Bev speed up and it
- 57:14cuts to black. And then it cuts to a news
- 57:16report where they're reporting another murder suicide, this
- 57:20time at Pastor Butler's home. And he is on screen in his best
- 57:25David Bird. Oh my God, Yeah, you're right.
- 57:28He's got the giant suit on with the.
- 57:31Giant David Byrne suit. Yeah, so like, his suit is
- 57:34massive and it makes his head look tiny.
- 57:36It's so funny. So they stop at a gas station
- 57:42and Bev is getting first aid supplies for Mark because he's
- 57:45not doing super great. It's the same store from before.
- 57:48Yeah, the same quirk too. Yeah, who?
- 57:50Looks like he hasn't moved. He is a fool.
- 57:53Toy boy Roy lives at the store. Did not change to a huge.
- 57:56State when it's not working. Yeah, he just, like shuts the
- 58:00power's down there. He's like, all right.
- 58:04And she goes back outside and she starts trying to patch them
- 58:07up, and we see in the back seat she's got the suitcase with all
- 58:11the documents and money from the barn.
- 58:12Yep. And that's how it ends.
- 58:14Yep, that's it. All right, we did it.
- 58:17We did it. So how do you feel after talking
- 58:20about it? It's a pretty fun movie.
- 58:22Yeah, it has its flaws, but ultimately I had a good time
- 58:26with it. OK, I'm gonna keep it at six.
- 58:29OK, I'm gonna keep it at 7.5 cuz I think I agree with you.
- 58:34I think it's fun. It's one of those you definitely
- 58:36wanna not think about it too hard.
- 58:38Yeah, it's sloppy, but I also think the people involved are
- 58:43sloppy, so it works for me. Everybody's sloppy in this.
- 58:45Yeah, it's sloppy on all levels here, but the characters are fun
- 58:49enough and I like the tension. I like how it gets rolling once
- 58:54they're at the house there. And yeah, yeah, it it plays out
- 58:58in a fun way. I have fun.
- 59:00I guess the the change I would have would be I guess just go
- 59:06with the original script. I guess like the wink wink nudge
- 59:09nudge miss of it all. I think it it would have
- 59:11benefited this story better. Yeah.
- 59:14Or if they were going to change the tone, they needed to do some
- 59:17rewrites. Yeah, you can't take a script
- 59:20with a tone and be like, but I'm gonna shoot it completely
- 59:24differently. Yeah, that's and I think that's
- 59:26really where a lot of those inconsistencies are coming with
- 59:29this. I think so too, yeah.
- 59:30It's just such a that's a weird decision.
- 59:32You have to do rewrites if that's the case.
- 59:34So you can't, you can't just like adapt something like that.
- 59:37I mean, I guess you can, but like it might work in your
- 59:40benefit, but in this case it doesn't.
- 59:42Yeah, yeah. Tell you tell you this.
- 59:45Well, she was. She was pretty sleepy throughout
- 59:49a lot of this, but then she did start to get like pretty Tweechy
- 59:55Tweechy. She had a weird night on.
- 59:58Friday, yeah, she had a weird night, but she, she, she got.
- 1:00:02Nervous near the end. She had a nervous day all day.
- 1:00:06We had the tropical storm roll through up here so she had to
- 1:00:09deal with that while we were at work.
- 1:00:10That was a full hurricane. Full Hurricane Passover, US.
- 1:00:14No, I'm saying we got the weather from a tropical storm is
- 1:00:18a thing. It's it's a lower classification
- 1:00:20of a hurricane. Like before, it's a hurricane,
- 1:00:22it's a tropical. Storm.
- 1:00:23Yeah, I think it downgraded to a tropical storm once it hit land
- 1:00:26and moved up. That's what how I took it at
- 1:00:28least. No, like we just got like the
- 1:00:30weather like that came from it. OK, yeah, but you all know what
- 1:00:35I'm talking about. Come on.
- 1:00:37Anyway, she had to deal with bad weather all day.
- 1:00:40She ate a notebook. Yeah.
- 1:00:42She ate trash. I was sad.
- 1:00:44I was upset with her and that made her sad because it was my
- 1:00:47notebook, but she ate. So it's just it was it was a lot
- 1:00:52going on. And then Johnny Knoxville like
- 1:00:54shows up and he's a bad guy and she's not used to that.
- 1:00:58So she, I think this is an effective maybe for Talia, there
- 1:01:01were no dog deaths. So I think maybe she's going to
- 1:01:05give this A7. OK, I could see that.
- 1:01:09She wasn't in the best frame of mind for it though.
- 1:01:12Zoe, who is Zoe's ultimate warrior?
- 1:01:15That's a good question. There's a lot of good candidates
- 1:01:18here. It's got to be between Val and
- 1:01:25Johnny Knoxville. And I think Val, because Val is
- 1:01:28always eating she's she eats a ton of Twinkies throughout this.
- 1:01:31Yeah, I guess you're right. Yeah, she's really loud about it
- 1:01:35too. Yeah, she's always really loud
- 1:01:37about all of her functions. And she attacks people when they
- 1:01:39try and turn on the lights. Yeah, true.
- 1:01:41Yeah, Yeah. It's Val.
- 1:01:43It's got to be Val. It's Val OK dream sequel.
- 1:01:46I guess you would like have to go to another group performing
- 1:01:52the murder, right? Like, you know, it's just kind
- 1:01:54of like a, a whole other separate story.
- 1:01:57Maybe you can have Mark and Bev involved again trying to blow
- 1:02:01the whole thing up. Yeah.
- 1:02:04Uncover the whole thing? Johnny Knoxville asked.
- 1:02:07So like he sends a hit team out after the two of them?
- 1:02:10Or maybe we see like a future generation of the church, like
- 1:02:13Johnny Knoxville's protege is trying to come up with a
- 1:02:15different type of scare tactic to get people involved.
- 1:02:19Maybe we get like Y2K or something.
- 1:02:23Do you want to have the characters, though, like Bev and
- 1:02:24Mark? Maybe.
- 1:02:26I don't know. I don't think that they're going
- 1:02:27to like, let that shit slide, you know what I mean?
- 1:02:30I think that they're going to be telling everybody about.
- 1:02:32It no. I think Bev just wanted to get
- 1:02:34away. I think she knows like that the
- 1:02:37the congregation at this point is just a cult and I think she
- 1:02:40doesn't want to try and fight it because that was her whole
- 1:02:42thing. Leaving the house was like, I
- 1:02:44just want this to be over. I'm not trying to be on
- 1:02:46anybody's side here. OK, that's fair.
- 1:02:48Yeah, but I think Mark, he lost his buddies.
- 1:02:51I don't. Think he lost his buddies?
- 1:02:52He's going to. Let them know like hey my
- 1:02:53buddies got killed by these people at that house.
- 1:02:56It probably has damaged his drumming career because he is
- 1:02:59fucked up. He's in a metal band.
- 1:03:02So they, some metal heads might be like, that's the shit that I
- 1:03:06want. You know, some of them are
- 1:03:08hardcore, just from some Wikipedia articles I've read.
- 1:03:13Again, I'm not a metal head. I don't really know.
- 1:03:16I'm looking from the outside then.
- 1:03:19OK. Oh, is that?
- 1:03:21It's just. Yeah, that's the general one.
- 1:03:23OK, yeah, All right. Well then let's do tagline.
- 1:03:26What? I'm just coming up with stupid
- 1:03:29stuff. I know it's OK, stupid stuff
- 1:03:32flies on here all the time. I.
- 1:03:34Say shout out the devil. Shout out the devil.
- 1:03:38But I think I'm blaming you for that because you made me watch a
- 1:03:41lot of Mötley Crüe videos. Earlier.
- 1:03:43That's all I'm thinking about. Too big old for you, man.
- 1:03:49Everybody you need to look up Vince Neil doing his cameo.
- 1:03:54Just if you want to know what we're talking about here, It's
- 1:03:56it's legendary. Let's see.
- 1:04:04They're going to rock your world.
- 1:04:06They're kind of rock your world. That's cheesy enough to make it.
- 1:04:13At least it's not like about praying or hell.
- 1:04:15That's true. We're.
- 1:04:17We're we're putting it more towards the music side.
- 1:04:19Yeah, that's true. We're we're sticking in the
- 1:04:21lane. We know.
- 1:04:22Yeah, that's true. Yeah, this movie is very much
- 1:04:25music related. But then again, it kind of cuts
- 1:04:27that like halfway through too. Yeah, it's like 1/2 metal, 1/2,
- 1:04:34like Satanic. Yeah, man.
- 1:04:38And this is a weird one to do. I can see why they struggled for
- 1:04:41this. Yeah.
- 1:04:43God, what do you even do with this?
- 1:04:48The Black Sabbath. The Black Sabbath?
- 1:04:54God. I don't know man.
- 1:04:57OK, then I guess we're going with They'll rock your world.
- 1:04:59Yeah, that's fine. I, I, I'm, I'm drawing nothing
- 1:05:02but blanks here. My.
- 1:05:03Brain is my brain is on lame puns, right?
- 1:05:07Now, yeah, fucking Molly Crue. Yeah, let's make that be the
- 1:05:11second fucking Mötley Crüe. Fucking Mötley Crüe shot the
- 1:05:16devil. Oh my God, they're a Mötley
- 1:05:19Crüe. They're a Mötley Crüe.
- 1:05:22There we go. There we go.
- 1:05:23Hey, we've been sneeled our way into that.
- 1:05:25Yeah, All right, you man. BIG4.
- 1:05:29Oh, before oh, we shout the devil do some big O 4 O you man
- 1:05:39God. OK, OK, Jesus Christ, let's move
- 1:05:42on. What's next?
- 1:05:47Reviews. Reviews.
- 1:05:48OK. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:49I pulled 2 cuz I wasn't sure how you were gonna feel about this.
- 1:05:52That's kind of what we have to do with this.
- 1:05:54Yeah, all month. So I will read the lesson to it
- 1:06:01once since you rated it mostly positive.
- 1:06:03OK, this is an IODB user review. It's a four out of 10 and it's
- 1:06:09titled We Didn't Summon Good Writers.
- 1:06:13The This movie's OK, you didn't summon good writers either.
- 1:06:17This movie started off very promising and the early twist,
- 1:06:20if you can call it that, was well executed.
- 1:06:22However, my biggest crape with this movie and any movie that
- 1:06:24does this is hooking you for 3/4 of the movie and they're just
- 1:06:26becoming so badly written and directed and the final act that
- 1:06:29infuriates you as you feel obligated to finish watching
- 1:06:31what has now become a terrible audience insulting cliche fest
- 1:06:34that was all a single sentence. Jesus Christ, why did you have
- 1:06:36to read that so fast? Because it was all a single
- 1:06:38sentence. Where do we start?
- 1:06:41The police officer turning up and finding 2 dead bodies but
- 1:06:43doesn't call for backup. The house plunge Into Darkness
- 1:06:45to the point you cannot see any of the Sutter actors.
- 1:06:48The hunt to find Alex, that she has car keys when there are two
- 1:06:50other cars parked outside. Stepmoms and cop probably with
- 1:06:52the keys in the ignition. The fact a knife is searched
- 1:06:54before searching for Alex when there is a gun and off board
- 1:06:58motor already in play as weapons.
- 1:06:59The girl who caught on fire and then disappeared.
- 1:07:01The ridiculous launch out of the upstairs window that looks like
- 1:07:04she had been thrown by someone with superhuman strength.
- 1:07:08OK, yes, we are meant to overlook certain things in
- 1:07:10horror, but come on, this was on track to be a solid six or seven
- 1:07:13for me until the disaster of a final act.
- 1:07:16OK, it does kind of go weird in the final bit.
- 1:07:20It kind of. It's an underwhelming ending,
- 1:07:23I'll give them that. Yeah, it, I mean, yeah, there
- 1:07:27are some flaws in logic there at the end.
- 1:07:29But also like I was caught up in enough in what was happening
- 1:07:32that that stuff wasn't occurring to me as it was happening.
- 1:07:35And I think we've talked about this on the show before, that
- 1:07:37it's really easy to sit from the comfort of your couch and be
- 1:07:39like, why are they doing this? Yeah, no, like if I if I were to
- 1:07:43change one thing from the ending, I would not have.
- 1:07:45Alex, I've gotten up. Yeah.
- 1:07:47Because like. Just let her be dead.
- 1:07:49Just. Let her be dead.
- 1:07:50And then it made her death more lame when they cut to black and
- 1:07:53you don't see exactly what happened there.
- 1:07:56That felt it didn't feel cheap seeing her fly through the
- 1:07:59window. And then I like when they're
- 1:08:01walking out and they're walking to the car and shit, she's right
- 1:08:04there on the sidewalk. That was a good way to just
- 1:08:06like, see her out. Yeah, I would have liked that,
- 1:08:09yeah. Yeah, but I don't know if it's
- 1:08:13the writing that did some of the weird shit in this man.
- 1:08:15I think it was the directing honestly.
- 1:08:17Yeah, yeah. And I mean, I, I don't think
- 1:08:21necessarily like that it's a badly directed movie.
- 1:08:24I think just tonally he wanted something different than what
- 1:08:26the script was offering and didn't do enough to change it.
- 1:08:31Yeah, he he like forced, yeah, this certain vision onto the
- 1:08:36script that I don't think yeah, it called.
- 1:08:39For it needed a little bit more finesse, which he's a fairly new
- 1:08:43director in terms of like feature length films.
- 1:08:45Yeah, he also did My Friend Dahmer.
- 1:08:48Oh, OK. Yeah.
- 1:08:50Interesting SO. Like I, I, I think he's newer to
- 1:08:53like these more like bigger production type features.
- 1:09:00Yeah, you look at this movie, you think indie movie?
- 1:09:03No, this is Lionsgate. Yeah, this is like a full blown
- 1:09:05company funded this shit. Yeah, so I just, I, I think it's
- 1:09:09just, you know, one of those, like, I'm newer to the whole
- 1:09:12thing. And he even talked about that a
- 1:09:14lot in his interview, which I'm gonna try to remember to put the
- 1:09:16links to all three of those interviews and then show notes
- 1:09:18for everybody. Yeah, but he even talked about
- 1:09:20like how a lot of the stuff he was doing with this was newer to
- 1:09:23him, so. Yeah, I mean, he didn't do a bad
- 1:09:25job. The movie is mostly a good
- 1:09:27movie. It's just there's certain parts
- 1:09:29of it that kind of just underwhelming, I guess, yeah.
- 1:09:33And it honestly, it really makes sense once you learn that he,
- 1:09:36like, was doing something different than what the script
- 1:09:39was calling for. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:09:41Yeah, when you said that, that put a lot of things into
- 1:09:44perspective for me. I get it because his intention
- 1:09:46was to show like how the fear mongering like is a thing that
- 1:09:50happens in real life, like creating this manufacturer's
- 1:09:54sense of panic. And I get that and that's really
- 1:09:56great. But the script I think was
- 1:09:58trying to also specific, typically play into horror fans
- 1:10:02who know the tropes. Yeah, I think so.
- 1:10:05Too, which is like a fun thing. But he wanted this to go beyond
- 1:10:07being a horror film. And I think that's he was took
- 1:10:10it too deep, yeah. Took it too deep than what it
- 1:10:12was actually. It was very surface level.
- 1:10:14Probably like just looking at it like it's surface level.
- 1:10:18And then I think he was trying to go for something too.
- 1:10:20Yeah. And I think if he'd just let it
- 1:10:22be what it is, it would still start those types of
- 1:10:24discussions, you know, and it, it would feel more organic.
- 1:10:27Yeah, that's true. I mean, we're horror fans.
- 1:10:30We're used to surface level. Yeah, we love that stuff.
- 1:10:33Yeah, we're used to surface level shit, but also like seeing
- 1:10:35what was intended underneath it, you know what I mean?
- 1:10:38It doesn't have to feel like super deep for it to also have a
- 1:10:43more grounded message. Yeah, true.
- 1:10:45Yeah, yeah. OK, listener reviews.
- 1:10:48Listener reviews. Yeah, I was surprised that so
- 1:10:51many of you guys had seen this, so thank you guys for dropping
- 1:10:54your reviews. Yeah, this was like a new
- 1:10:56discovery for both of us this month, so.
- 1:10:58Yeah. OK, so we'll start off on
- 1:11:01Instagram. First we have Cubesaves who says
- 1:11:05I wanted to like this one but just didn't.
- 1:11:08OK. I can see that it like this is a
- 1:11:10movie that like Jessie, she saw it as like this is a recipe for
- 1:11:14my type of movie. Here it is.
- 1:11:16This is a Jessie movie. It's a Jessie movie for sure.
- 1:11:18And it ended up actually working in her favor.
- 1:11:21But I could see this one falling short for some people.
- 1:11:24For sure. Yeah, sometimes.
- 1:11:25Sometimes Jessie movies are a let down.
- 1:11:27Yeah, OK, this one I agree with. Attack of the killer objects.
- 1:11:32OK. Who says it's no masterpiece,
- 1:11:34but it's fun. Yeah, that's kind of how I feel
- 1:11:37about it. Like I had a fun time with it.
- 1:11:41Yeah, I think that that perfectly kind of captures my
- 1:11:44feelings for you, too. Like, yeah, not the greatest
- 1:11:47horror movie, but it's not one that I hated.
- 1:11:49I regret watching. Yeah.
- 1:11:51I had a fun. Time it's a.
- 1:11:51Good way to spend some time. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:11:54Like it's got a rewatch ability factor to it.
- 1:11:56Yeah, OK. Over on Twitter, Chad says heavy
- 1:12:00metal horror. That's an easy sell for me.
- 1:12:03Overall, I really like this movie, but there was something I
- 1:12:05can't quite put my finger on that would have made this movie
- 1:12:08truly memorable. Fun flick though.
- 1:12:10OK. Hopefully this kind of put that
- 1:12:12into perspective one and shit that went on in the background
- 1:12:16there where they changed some stuff that might be what you're
- 1:12:19talking about. If hearing this discussion
- 1:12:21triggered something in your head that you put your finger on why
- 1:12:25it wasn't memorable, let us know.
- 1:12:26Yeah, for sure it did for me. Absolutely.
- 1:12:30All right. And finally we have Kevin or the
- 1:12:33Kevin in the woods. That's.
- 1:12:34A good one, yeah. I liked it.
- 1:12:37While the twist is rather weak, everything else is pretty top
- 1:12:39notch. Very enjoyable and Daddario
- 1:12:41turns in a stellar performance. I agree about daddario.
- 1:12:44I'm sorry, Kev. I disagree.
- 1:12:46I think she she went too hard. I think she, I think she went
- 1:12:50from what the script was wanting and I, the director was like,
- 1:12:54no, not my movie. We never did a Who did you
- 1:12:56relate to? Oh.
- 1:12:57Fuck, we didn't, did we? No, I think there's a couple for
- 1:13:02me. Whenever I looked at Kovacs, I
- 1:13:07think I've worn that exact outfit.
- 1:13:09Yeah, I think you have that in your closet right now.
- 1:13:12You for sure have that flannel. I've got that flannel.
- 1:13:14You've got the headband. I've got the headband, jeans,
- 1:13:18easy T-shirt. You just need a banter or some
- 1:13:21shit. I've got several of those.
- 1:13:22Yeah, like. Travis has walked around town
- 1:13:24dressed like that so. Like I can pull a picture and I
- 1:13:27could probably do it side by side.
- 1:13:29Yeah. So yeah, I related to him.
- 1:13:33He tried a little bit too hard, but we've all been there.
- 1:13:37I probably relate to vowel. I know.
- 1:13:40I knew you were. Gonna say her.
- 1:13:41Yeah, I have to pee a lot. I wear a lot of brightly colored
- 1:13:44lipstick and sometimes I'm just a little bit too loud and
