- 0:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 0:01Speaker 2: That's what he said.
- 0:03Speaker 1: That's what he said.
- 0:04Speaker 3: That's what he said. The second part of the Dodgers
- 0:10Speaker 3: news that we're seeing, that's what he said. Quote will
- 0:12Speaker 3: come in the second portion of this second part, but
- 0:15Speaker 3: we'll start with Bob Nightingale's tweet on Yamamoto and Roki Sazaki.
- 0:20Speaker 3: So this applies to anyone rooting for whoever in the
- 0:23Speaker 3: WBC the World Baseball Classic, but also Dodger fans who
- 0:27Speaker 3: get nervous. We all remember the Edwin Diaz situation and
- 0:31Speaker 3: others have gotten hurt. I think Drew Smiley in the
- 0:34Speaker 3: one that I called in the WBC ended up getting
- 0:37Speaker 3: hurt or never was the same after that. But anyway,
- 0:40Speaker 3: Dodgers me, no, not this year, not anymore.
- 0:46Speaker 1: The commissioners.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Yamamoto confirmed today he's going to pitch for Team Japan
- 0:53Speaker 3: in the World Baseball Classic, and reports out of Japan
- 0:56Speaker 3: this all from Bob Nightingale, say that Roki Sazaki is
- 1:00Speaker 3: not going to pitch in the World Baseball Classic. Both
- 1:04Speaker 3: of these tidbits make complete sense to me. We might
- 1:07Speaker 3: as well add the Doc Roberts quote about show Hey Otani,
- 1:10Speaker 3: because I think these all are tied together to the
- 1:14Speaker 3: same WBC team and the same MLB team. Doc Roberts
- 1:19Speaker 3: spoke about show Hey at the winter meetings and he
- 1:22Speaker 3: said he hasn't talked to him yet about pitching in
- 1:24Speaker 3: the WBC, but he is hopeful that Otani will only
- 1:28Speaker 3: hit for Japan. I'll add to that Todd Father if
- 1:32Speaker 3: he calls Otani and says, hey, dude, I only want
- 1:36Speaker 3: you to hit, and O'tani says that's cool. I'm going
- 1:40Speaker 3: to do both for my country. Doc's going to say
- 1:44Speaker 3: good talk.
- 1:45Speaker 2: See as soon.
- 1:48Speaker 4: He's gonna ask for a trade, That's what it's gonna.
- 1:53Speaker 3: He's gonna say, thanks for back to back titles in
- 1:55Speaker 3: your first two years with us.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You do what you want.
- 1:57Speaker 3: I'm just I was just throwing that out there that
- 1:59Speaker 3: if you don't want to pitch, you don't have to.
- 2:01Speaker 3: But if you do want to pitch, I still love you.
- 2:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:05Speaker 5: I think they'll have an easy communication about it, whether
- 2:08Speaker 5: one whether he does it or not. And I don't
- 2:11Speaker 5: think he'd be like, no, sorry, I don't I want
- 2:14Speaker 5: to pitch and do this, you can't say anything about it.
- 2:16Speaker 5: I think they'll have a nice dialogue about the whole thing.
- 2:19Speaker 5: And we'll see what happens. What happens if all of
- 2:22Speaker 5: a sudden they get in these games where it's they're
- 2:24Speaker 5: in the final four and all of a sudden, they
- 2:27Speaker 5: they're running out.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Of pitch and hey, Show, Hey, can you throw an
- 2:29Speaker 4: inning or two? I don't know.
- 2:30Speaker 5: We'll see what happens. They do they take pride in
- 2:32Speaker 5: their country, though, they they definitely do.
- 2:35Speaker 4: He's Doc Roberts.
- 2:38Speaker 1: He's gonna pitch. He's one hundred percent gonna pitch. But
- 2:41Speaker 1: I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go past the uh Edwin
- 2:45Speaker 1: DZ because everyone's like, oh, yeah, you know Drew Smiley,
- 2:47Speaker 1: Like you just said, Drew Smiley got hurt. Edwin Diz
- 2:50Speaker 1: everybody jumping around, You got her jumping around, Like, stop
- 2:55Speaker 1: blaming the WBC for injuries, like these guys are ramping
- 2:59Speaker 1: it up up. But here's my conspiracy theory. Because you
- 3:03Speaker 1: don't always get hurt in the moment that you're playing.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Maybe it's the duration. And do you remember who won
- 3:11Speaker 1: the WBC and struck out Mike Trout in twenty twenty three?
- 3:15Speaker 4: Oh yes, show Hao Tani and then what happened?
- 3:18Speaker 1: Do you remember what happened at the end of twenty
- 3:20Speaker 1: twenty three to show Heytani's arm with the shoulder, elbow, elbow.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It wasn't Tommy Johnathan it was. It was some kind
- 3:29Speaker 1: of internal bracing. It was UCL. So was that caused
- 3:34Speaker 1: by his speedy ramp up for that spring training WC
- 3:41Speaker 1: WBC moment. We'll never know, but you can't definitively tell
- 3:44Speaker 1: me it had no correlation.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll say.
- 3:52Speaker 5: I mean, listen, so you're fearful of that if you're
- 3:55Speaker 5: doing But they are thrown in spring training, Yeah, I
- 3:58Speaker 5: guess they're not. They're trying to ramp up to get
- 4:00Speaker 5: there where you need to be, and then there they're like,
- 4:02Speaker 5: hey man, you're going five innings.
- 4:03Speaker 4: We're trying to get eighty five.
- 4:05Speaker 1: I mean, it's not they're not playing travel ball. They're
- 4:08Speaker 1: not going to go there and be like, oh we
- 4:10Speaker 1: got to the finals. We ran out of pitching. No,
- 4:13Speaker 1: this isn't you know, this isn't kids travel ball. But
- 4:15Speaker 1: I think I think that it is a legitimate discussion.
- 4:21Speaker 1: There's injury concerns, there is insurance concerns as far as
- 4:26Speaker 1: cash all that stuff to get these guys to play.
- 4:29Speaker 1: But hey, Yamamoto literally pitched more than everybody for the
- 4:34Speaker 1: longest time at the end of the season, and then
- 4:37Speaker 1: they say, okay, you can go pitch. If you're a
- 4:42Speaker 1: Dodgers fan, if you're Doc Roberts, You're like, I'm the
- 4:45Speaker 1: biggest Yamamoto fan. Does this mean I'm losing a start
- 4:48Speaker 1: from him on the season? Especially after he had more
- 4:51Speaker 1: starts than he ever had. He blew past it. By
- 4:54Speaker 1: the middle of September, he already had more starts than
- 4:56Speaker 1: he ever had in his career. And then they went
- 4:57Speaker 1: to the end of October. It was a month and
- 4:58Speaker 1: a half of extra starts.
- 5:00Speaker 4: It's what the All Star break is for. That's why
- 5:01Speaker 4: it's called a break.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Oh, just one, just one.
- 5:05Speaker 4: He'll probably be on that though. Yep.
- 5:08Speaker 3: I just think you have to be careful with the
- 5:10Speaker 3: Japanese superstar in trying to prevent him from representing his country.
- 5:15Speaker 3: It's a different culture. Tell me I'm wrong, krat or
- 5:19Speaker 3: top Father. The players are like, yo, I'm repping the country.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I'm doing what I'm gonna do, and you gotta just
- 5:24Speaker 3: worry about the consequences. And if anything, I think show
- 5:27Speaker 3: Hey might not pitch early in the WBC, but as expected,
- 5:31Speaker 3: they should get to the semifinals and then he's going
- 5:33Speaker 3: to be up and at him. Now, maybe it's just
- 5:35Speaker 3: a bullpen dude like we saw last time around. But
- 5:39Speaker 3: if you give me over under half an inning, that show,
- 5:43Speaker 3: Hey is going to pitch in the WBC. I'm smashing
- 5:45Speaker 3: the over.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I you faced Japan in the finals of the Olympics
- 5:51Speaker 1: dress I faced Japan in fourteen in the MLB All
- 5:56Speaker 1: Stars Tour, which was in the middle of November. A
- 6:01Speaker 1: lot of those guys season had been done, and all
- 6:05Speaker 1: those guys had kept it ramped up, just playing just
- 6:09Speaker 1: for that. Then I faced them in the qualifier in
- 6:13Speaker 1: the beginning of November again in twenty nineteen. All those
- 6:18Speaker 1: dudes kept it ramped up for that. So I think it.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I think Scott's spot on your spot on Scott in
- 6:27Speaker 1: the sense of like these guys play for their country.
- 6:32Speaker 1: It is, it means, it means more. It's like the
- 6:34Speaker 1: SEC it means more.
- 6:43Speaker 3: Hey, we're hitting the Giants off season to do list
- 6:46Speaker 3: with our friend and star of Splash Hit Territory FP.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Santangel are joining us right now.
- 6:52Speaker 4: FP.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Always great to see you.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Man.
- 6:53Speaker 3: The way we do this is you lay out your
- 6:55Speaker 3: three Hey, this is what the Giants need to do
- 6:57Speaker 3: the rest of the way here in the wintertime. And
- 7:00Speaker 3: and we'll come back at you with follow ups.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Well, I mean my three right now? Or how does
- 7:06Speaker 7: Tony Voytello fit in?
- 7:08Speaker 2: Is number one?
- 7:09Speaker 7: Number two they need to add to starting pitching. I'm
- 7:12Speaker 7: looking at him right here on the side. And then
- 7:15Speaker 7: you know, there's some players that on the current roster
- 7:18Speaker 7: that could could do.
- 7:19Speaker 2: A little bit better.
- 7:20Speaker 7: Buster always says there's more meat on the bone with
- 7:23Speaker 7: some of the players they have.
- 7:24Speaker 1: All right, well, let's go right to Tony fitting in,
- 7:27Speaker 1: Tony Botello fitting in, Like you gotta be careful. You're
- 7:30Speaker 1: a next big leaguer, you can't. You know, we gotta
- 7:33Speaker 1: be nice to the guys who have never played in
- 7:35Speaker 1: pro ball, have never been in a big league, you know,
- 7:39Speaker 1: big league bench to even say I was on the
- 7:42Speaker 1: bench in the big league. So you got to be careful.
- 7:44Speaker 1: So how's he got to fit in?
- 7:48Speaker 7: You know, I think he's smart, and I think you
- 7:50Speaker 7: got to be transparent. You guys know, more than anything
- 7:52Speaker 7: in today's game, it's about what the manager can do
- 7:54Speaker 7: for the players, Right, How could I increase your value
- 7:57Speaker 7: in the industry? What can I do for you, and
- 7:59Speaker 7: so just have that open door policy. He's saying things
- 8:03Speaker 7: right now like I'm overwhelmed, and you know he seems overwhelmed.
- 8:10Speaker 7: So it's understandable, right, all of a sudden, you're a
- 8:12Speaker 7: big league manager from the University of Tennessee.
- 8:15Speaker 2: But I think he's a quick learner, and there's probably
- 8:18Speaker 2: gonna be some hiccups. You guys. You know, like if
- 8:20Speaker 2: you've never.
- 8:20Speaker 7: Been in a big league at clubhouse and you haven't
- 8:23Speaker 7: talked to grown men. Now there's twenty six general managers
- 8:25Speaker 7: on every team that know everything about everything. And back
- 8:30Speaker 7: when we played, I feel like it was what we
- 8:32Speaker 7: could do for our manager. And when you're at the
- 8:34Speaker 7: University of Tennessee, whatever he says is gospel.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Right.
- 8:37Speaker 7: These are eighteen to nineteen year old kids, and they're
- 8:39Speaker 7: just like worshiping the ground he walks on. But like
- 8:42Speaker 7: in the big leagues, you know, we sit back and
- 8:44Speaker 7: we're on the plane, we're having a pop and we're
- 8:46Speaker 7: can you believe what happened today?
- 8:48Speaker 2: I mean, we should do that stuff.
- 8:49Speaker 7: So I think there's gonna be some initial hiccups, But man,
- 8:52Speaker 7: what a dynamic personality.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I've gotten to spend some time with him, and I'm
- 8:55Speaker 2: really rooting for him.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Can a manager in this day and age really get
- 8:59Speaker 1: in the way of a postseason berth? Because I you know,
- 9:02Speaker 1: I don't think we're looking at the NL West, But
- 9:05Speaker 1: can what you said, it's your first thing on your list,
- 9:08Speaker 1: Tony Vattello fit in. Can he get in the way
- 9:11Speaker 1: of a postseason berth? Because you have Logan Webb, you
- 9:14Speaker 1: have Robbie Ray, you have Raphael Devers in the lineup,
- 9:18Speaker 1: you have Matt Chapman's platinum glove at third, Like, can
- 9:21Speaker 1: he really get in the way?
- 9:24Speaker 7: I mean, if you're saying like game time decisions, I
- 9:27Speaker 7: don't think so. I think the only time a manager
- 9:29Speaker 7: ever gets in the way, and you've probably experienced this
- 9:32Speaker 7: is when he loses the clubhouse, right, and all of
- 9:34Speaker 7: a sudden, you got guys over in one corner talk,
- 9:36Speaker 7: and you got guys over in another corner talk, and
- 9:40Speaker 7: then all of a sudden, you know, things start to
- 9:42Speaker 7: go south in a hurry, and it gets ugly. So
- 9:44Speaker 7: I think he's gonna learn on the fly. And he's
- 9:47Speaker 7: got he's got Dusty Baker around him, He's got Bruce
- 9:49Speaker 7: bot You around him. He's got Ron Washington on the
- 9:51Speaker 7: staff now, so he's been insulated with some baseball royalties,
- 9:55Speaker 7: so if he has any questions, I mean, his president
- 9:58Speaker 7: of Baseball Operations is a future Hall of Fame two,
- 10:00Speaker 7: so he's surrounded by good people and I think he's
- 10:03Speaker 7: humble enough to ask questions and to learn.
- 10:06Speaker 5: And as we know number two here, we're talking about
- 10:08Speaker 5: pitching always. Everybody needs at a starter, especially this team,
- 10:12Speaker 5: talk about maybe what they're thinking about. Do they have
- 10:15Speaker 5: anything in the work, So have you heard anything about
- 10:17Speaker 5: getting that starting pitcher that they need?
- 10:20Speaker 7: Yeah, you guys, I'm pretty disconnected in the off season,
- 10:22Speaker 7: just doing the podcast, so it's not like I'm in
- 10:26Speaker 7: the clubhouse that I'm getting some dirt right now. I
- 10:29Speaker 7: know Giants fans in general, if you read the comments
- 10:33Speaker 7: on our episodes, they're starting to panic a little bit.
- 10:37Speaker 7: And I think a great addition in one of Williadomas's
- 10:42Speaker 7: best friends is Freddy Peralta, and I don't know who
- 10:44Speaker 7: you trade for him. I don't know if you sacrifice
- 10:47Speaker 7: Bryce Eldridge, one of the top prospects in all of
- 10:49Speaker 7: baseball for Freddy Peralta, who would be a rent to player,
- 10:52Speaker 7: because you know he has a year left on his contract,
- 10:54Speaker 7: you probably have to sign him to a long term deal.
- 10:56Speaker 7: But when you have Logan Web and Robbie ray Man,
- 10:59Speaker 7: it would be nice to.
- 11:00Speaker 2: A guy like that in.
- 11:01Speaker 7: But then you have to ask yourself, like, if we
- 11:03Speaker 7: do go out inside a lot of guys, are we
- 11:04Speaker 7: just throwing a pebble into the ocean when you compare
- 11:07Speaker 7: yourself to the Dodgers and what they're doing right now, and.
- 11:10Speaker 2: So, yeah, do I want to spend money because I
- 11:15Speaker 2: don't know if we can compete with.
- 11:16Speaker 7: The Dodgers, but we could be a playoff team and
- 11:19Speaker 7: then once you get in, so that's a trick.
- 11:21Speaker 2: They're in a tricky situation right now.
- 11:23Speaker 7: I think all the baseball is in a tricky situation
- 11:25Speaker 7: when you talk about what the Dodgers are.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Doing, smoking like a true giant, all the Dodgers, all
- 11:31Speaker 1: the Dodgers. The Dodgers care about the padres. They don't
- 11:34Speaker 1: care about the giants. My question is like Todd when
- 11:37Speaker 1: he goes to Texas Roadhouse and he's looking at the
- 11:39Speaker 1: stakes through the through the glass and says, I want
- 11:43Speaker 1: that one which bone has the most meat on it?
- 11:46Speaker 1: Which which player has the most meat? Left on the
- 11:50Speaker 1: bone that Buster Posey's kind of like, Hey, I'm looking
- 11:53Speaker 1: at this guy to really step up? Is it Patrick Bailey?
- 11:57Speaker 1: Because of the kind of down year that he had.
- 12:01Speaker 2: It could be Patrick Bailey.
- 12:03Speaker 7: You know when you talk about Patrick like should be
- 12:06Speaker 7: a platinum glove catcher. I mean what he does behind
- 12:08Speaker 7: the plate is magical, the way he handles the staff.
- 12:11Speaker 7: I know you're gonna have the automated strike zone this
- 12:13Speaker 7: year and that that could a few things. But there's
- 12:16Speaker 7: a guy that struck out three hundred and thirty three
- 12:18Speaker 7: times the last three years. So for me, Patrick Bailey
- 12:21Speaker 7: doesn't have to hit two seventy to eighty, but just
- 12:23Speaker 7: like be a tough out, put the ball and play
- 12:26Speaker 7: a little bit more grind some at bats out there's
- 12:28Speaker 7: a question whether he should be a switch hitter, and
- 12:30Speaker 7: that's for them to decide. Jung Whu Lee's another guy,
- 12:33Speaker 7: by the way, jun I think he had thirteen stolen
- 12:37Speaker 7: base attempts last year and stole ten, And to me,
- 12:40Speaker 7: he's kind of a prototypical leadoff hitter that where if
- 12:42Speaker 7: he plays the game a little more aggressively, whether it's
- 12:46Speaker 7: taking charge in the outfield on balls in the gaps,
- 12:48Speaker 7: whether it's stealing bases and being more aggressive on the bases.
- 12:53Speaker 2: He doesn't bunt at all.
- 12:54Speaker 7: And apparently he's a really good bunner, and Itchi rows
- 12:57Speaker 7: his hero So when you talk about how Itchiro is
- 13:00Speaker 7: kind of laid the butt down and then in one
- 13:02Speaker 7: of the best bunters I've ever seen. So there's there's
- 13:04Speaker 7: more to his game. But he just played his first
- 13:07Speaker 7: full season as a major leaguer and he's facing guys
- 13:09Speaker 7: for the first time playing in ballparks he wasn't familiar with.
- 13:12Speaker 7: You know, he only played thirty something games his first
- 13:14Speaker 7: year as a Giant, So I think there's a lot
- 13:16Speaker 7: of meat on the bone because when he's good, they win.
- 13:18Speaker 7: It's like Hugo Ego kind of a thing. So that's
- 13:22Speaker 7: one guy in then Elliott Ramos, when you talk about,
- 13:25Speaker 7: you know what he did last year and in his
- 13:27Speaker 7: defensive problems in left field, he had confidence issues, he
- 13:32Speaker 7: was bobbling ground balls, he was throwing. He threw a
- 13:35Speaker 7: ball into left center field last year from left field
- 13:38Speaker 7: because he held on to it and just threw it
- 13:40Speaker 7: to left center field. He's a great offensive player, he's
- 13:43Speaker 7: a great kid. He works hard, but if he needs
- 13:47Speaker 7: to get better for the Giants to be better.
- 13:49Speaker 4: I'm very interested, you said.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Dusty Baker and Ron Washington two of my all time
- 13:54Speaker 5: favorite guys.
- 13:55Speaker 4: What do you expect from both them?
- 13:57Speaker 5: I know Ron might have a little more going on
- 14:00Speaker 5: because he's going to be closer, But at the same time,
- 14:03Speaker 5: is Dusty going to be there all the time?
- 14:04Speaker 4: Like?
- 14:04Speaker 5: Talk to me, do you know the ins and outs
- 14:06Speaker 5: of both of those guys and what their job entitles?
- 14:09Speaker 7: No, I Todd, I'm with you, man, those are two
- 14:11Speaker 7: of my favorite favorite ever. I played for Dusty and
- 14:14Speaker 7: we're still really good friends. Markay things like I don't
- 14:18Speaker 7: know what I'm doing here, I don't know my role is,
- 14:22Speaker 7: but I think this year it's going to be a
- 14:24Speaker 7: little more defined with a rookie manager. I mean, you
- 14:28Speaker 7: have two Hall of Fame managers and Bruce Bochi and
- 14:30Speaker 7: Dusty Baker right at your disposal. And you know Wash,
- 14:34Speaker 7: I mean Todd, I don't know how he influenced your career,
- 14:36Speaker 7: but you know, in Oakland my last year playing second base,
- 14:39Speaker 7: he taught me things at thirty five years old, and
- 14:42Speaker 7: I was like, where have.
- 14:42Speaker 2: You been all my life?
- 14:43Speaker 7: Just like opening up on a ball to your right
- 14:45Speaker 7: and backhanded it instead of like trying to work around
- 14:48Speaker 7: it and throwing on the run going into left field
- 14:50Speaker 7: away from the play. Just little things around the bag
- 14:53Speaker 7: and turn a double plays, you know. I mean, he's
- 14:55Speaker 7: he's just a joy to be around, and.
- 14:56Speaker 2: He keeps it real.
- 14:59Speaker 7: He's always pos He's probably the hardest working coach I've
- 15:03Speaker 7: ever been around. Man, he'd get you out there at
- 15:04Speaker 7: noon and doing all your groundball drills. And he managed
- 15:07Speaker 7: in the Big League. So I mean, their assembling what
- 15:11Speaker 7: seems to be kind of an all star staff, and
- 15:13Speaker 7: it makes sense with who your new manager is, having
- 15:16Speaker 7: those three guys around. Dusty's my all time favorite. Wash
- 15:20Speaker 7: is my all time favorite coach. I think, Todd and
- 15:22Speaker 7: you might disagree with me. I think Wash is better
- 15:24Speaker 7: as a coach than a manager. Not that he's a
- 15:26Speaker 7: bad manager, but he was born to get out there
- 15:29Speaker 7: and work and to coach and to teach.
- 15:32Speaker 1: All right. So you said about the starting pitching Batsuya
- 15:36Speaker 1: and my when we talk about Japanese pitchers or Japanese players,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you pretty much go down the West Coast. You're like,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I know, Seattle, Holy crap, it could be the Dodgers
- 15:47Speaker 1: padres No, they're kind of, you know, they're kind of
- 15:50Speaker 1: landlocked with their money a little bit. So the giants
- 15:53Speaker 1: fall in. There are the giants willing to go. Is
- 15:56Speaker 1: Buster Posey willing to say, yes, I would commit that
- 16:01Speaker 1: much to a starting pitcher that's not a known commodity.
- 16:06Speaker 1: I get it, he's probably going to has Yamamoto comps.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But is Buster Posey going to be able to or
- 16:13Speaker 1: be okay sticking his foot in that water just like
- 16:16Speaker 1: he kind of did with Willia Doomas.
- 16:20Speaker 7: Yeah, I think Buster Posey's fine with it because it's
- 16:22Speaker 7: not his money.
- 16:23Speaker 2: You have to go to Greg Johnson.
- 16:25Speaker 7: You got to go to Greg Johnson, the owner and
- 16:27Speaker 7: see if he's he's fine with it. I'm sure Buster
- 16:29Speaker 7: wants to go out and get him. I think he
- 16:32Speaker 7: got to be careful that everybody's not Yamamoto. And I've
- 16:36Speaker 7: watched this guy pitch on just like on highlights on YouTube,
- 16:39Speaker 7: and his split's dirty and his fastball is kind of
- 16:42Speaker 7: a short arm upshoot fastball that gets on you.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I mean, look at the numbers. Incredible.
- 16:46Speaker 7: The thing I like about him, you guys, is he
- 16:48Speaker 7: said he didn't want to be a Dodger and he
- 16:50Speaker 7: wants to beat the Dodgers. And I don't know if
- 16:51Speaker 7: that was a bargaining ploy but if he's got that
- 16:54Speaker 7: kind of swagger with the mullet and he wants to
- 16:56Speaker 7: be on a team that takes down the Dodgers, I mean,
- 16:58Speaker 7: what better team that designed with the But they've said
- 17:01Speaker 7: they're not going to sign pitchers to big contracts, and
- 17:05Speaker 7: that could be a bargaining employe too. We all don't
- 17:08Speaker 7: know what's going on right now, and you guys are players.
- 17:12Speaker 7: I always wonder what the players are thinking right now,
- 17:14Speaker 7: like what's going on? Are they all texting each other
- 17:18Speaker 7: in the group check going? Are we getting anybody? Are
- 17:21Speaker 7: we just staying at What are we doing? I always
- 17:24Speaker 7: go to that mode, like in the offseason, what are
- 17:26Speaker 7: those guys thinking right now when they're seeing all the
- 17:28Speaker 7: moves going on around baseball?
- 17:30Speaker 1: What's your opinion, but also the organization's opinion of the
- 17:34Speaker 1: twenty eight bat twenty eight at bats that we saw
- 17:37Speaker 1: from Bryce Eldridge last year? Is this a power hitter?
- 17:41Speaker 1: That crap? Nobody hits for power in San Francisco, but
- 17:46Speaker 1: Willie hit thirty homers and Rothie's probably gonna hit thirty
- 17:49Speaker 1: home runs for the Giants this year. So is it
- 17:53Speaker 1: something that they were fearf or they didn't know how
- 17:57Speaker 1: the twenty eight at bats was gonna go, and it
- 17:59Speaker 1: just kind of it didn't go well right out of
- 18:02Speaker 1: the gate.
- 18:04Speaker 7: I think it's not the numbers or the results per se.
- 18:07Speaker 7: It was it was how he handled those at bats.
- 18:09Speaker 7: And I think Buster will tell you he's gone on
- 18:11Speaker 7: record saying I like that he wasn't scared. And he's
- 18:15Speaker 7: twenty years old, man, and your first go around the
- 18:17Speaker 7: big leagues and he was dinged up. There is one
- 18:20Speaker 7: giant power hitter that the park couldn't hold. I think
- 18:22Speaker 7: we all know his name. And you guys like guys
- 18:25Speaker 7: like Schwarber come in there and they hit balls in
- 18:27Speaker 7: the cove and if you have pop, you have pop.
- 18:30Speaker 7: Like it's not so much as the ball doesn't carry there. Baseball,
- 18:34Speaker 7: you know, we're used to playing in like ninety degrees
- 18:36Speaker 7: in humidity, and when the ball's flying, it's cold a
- 18:40Speaker 7: lot of nights there, and it's tough.
- 18:41Speaker 2: It's tough to hit in the cold.
- 18:43Speaker 7: So it's more about that. But I think he's got
- 18:46Speaker 7: line to line pop. You watch his videos from Triple
- 18:48Speaker 7: A's going out to left center field, and the ball
- 18:51Speaker 7: does carry that way at Oracle Park, and so yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 7: I wouldn't judge anything off that. I think it was
- 18:57Speaker 7: just a kind of a recruiting trip. Hey, this is
- 18:59Speaker 7: what it's like. This is what the clubhouse is like.
- 19:01Speaker 7: This is what the planes are like, this is what
- 19:03Speaker 7: the charters like. These are what the hotels are like.
- 19:06Speaker 7: He does have like size sixteen seventeen feet and I
- 19:09Speaker 7: don't know how he improves his footwork around the bag.
- 19:13Speaker 2: He's kind of heavy footed, but a great kid man.
- 19:16Speaker 7: You talk to him, you fall in love with him
- 19:18Speaker 7: in two seconds, and you're rooting for him. I don't
- 19:20Speaker 7: know if the Giants trade him. We did a whole
- 19:22Speaker 7: podcast on that. Do you trade Bryce Eldridge? Not for
- 19:26Speaker 7: me to I think he's a forty home run guy
- 19:29Speaker 7: even in that ballpark.
- 19:31Speaker 1: Wait, what did Buster say that he wasn't scared of
- 19:36Speaker 1: the moment? Is that what you said about when when.
- 19:38Speaker 7: He just like the way he handled the at bats,
- 19:39Speaker 7: And I'll call he was and you know, he went
- 19:41Speaker 7: deep into counts and foul pitches off and maybe it
- 19:43Speaker 7: always didn't end up in a hit, but he liked
- 19:45Speaker 7: his he liked how he went about it, and it's
- 19:48Speaker 7: hard to judge a guy in twenty eight at bats
- 19:49Speaker 7: and you know, had the risk thing going on and
- 19:51Speaker 7: he wasn't healthy. So I, yeah, I'm with you, man,
- 19:55Speaker 7: I would love to see more of them because I
- 19:56Speaker 7: don't know either.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Well, that's that's kind of what I was going and
- 20:00Speaker 1: on that. I just wanted to make sure I got
- 20:01Speaker 1: the quote right, because don't you feel like the Giants
- 20:04Speaker 1: played him a little scared? Like he's up there, he's
- 20:08Speaker 1: up there one of the first nights. Oh left, he's going,
- 20:10Speaker 1: We're not gonna we're not gonna throw him out there.
- 20:12Speaker 1: Like if this guy is the guy and you you
- 20:15Speaker 1: know you want him to just ride on big league planes,
- 20:18Speaker 1: I guess that's one thing. But like, if you're that guy,
- 20:20Speaker 1: if you're a forty home run guy, you're protecting him?
- 20:24Speaker 1: Is that? Is that the way to go? Is that
- 20:26Speaker 1: the way you're like, hey, we're not gonna put you
- 20:27Speaker 1: in against lefties, you know, right right out the gate,
- 20:29Speaker 1: we're gonna we're gonna kind of move you into the
- 20:33Speaker 1: big league experience. Is that? Am I? Am? I off
- 20:36Speaker 1: on that?
- 20:38Speaker 4: No?
- 20:38Speaker 7: I think there was some health issues that we didn't
- 20:40Speaker 7: know about at the time, so that that might have
- 20:42Speaker 7: played into it.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But I'm with you, man.
- 20:44Speaker 7: I was around Bryce Harper when he was nineteen and
- 20:46Speaker 7: they threw him right in the fire. I was around
- 20:48Speaker 7: Juan Soto when he was nineteen, and he threw him
- 20:50Speaker 7: right in the fire. And it was there was no platoons,
- 20:52Speaker 7: there was no matchups. It was like, you know, throw
- 20:55Speaker 7: them off the end of the dock and hopefully they
- 20:57Speaker 7: figure it out. And I think, you know, there could
- 21:01Speaker 7: be another year of seasoning for Bryce Eldridge at the
- 21:03Speaker 7: Triple A level.
- 21:04Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 21:05Speaker 7: I guess we'll see how the risk fares in spring
- 21:07Speaker 7: training and you know, how he fits in with Devers
- 21:10Speaker 7: at first And do you want to dh a twenty
- 21:12Speaker 7: year old twenty one year old? Now, I guess, and
- 21:15Speaker 7: that's something that the organization has to decide. But I'm
- 21:18Speaker 7: with you, Mandy, Hey, you get your day in the sun.
- 21:21Speaker 7: Let's go get y up. But also, like I didn't
- 21:25Speaker 7: know there was health issues at the time, and I
- 21:27Speaker 7: was kind of seeing the same things you guys were seeing.
- 21:31Speaker 3: Pee you're the man. You get a lot more of
- 21:33Speaker 3: this on splash It Territory, which is off to a
- 21:36Speaker 3: banger beginning. I know we texted about it, but for real,
- 21:40Speaker 3: there was a need in the marketplace and this thing
- 21:43Speaker 3: just wait till the season starts will take off. But already,
- 21:46Speaker 3: I mean, we're just seeing a ton of great feedback,
- 21:48Speaker 3: as you can see probably in the comments at It's
- 21:50Speaker 3: really cool. So keep doing your thing, man, this is
- 21:53Speaker 3: just the start.
- 21:55Speaker 7: Thanks you guys, Thanks for having me on. Happy holidays everybody.
- 21:58Speaker 3: Hey, we're back and so is Glazer with us the
- 22:01Speaker 3: star of Friar Territory talking all about the San Diego Padres,
- 22:05Speaker 3: and I think it'll be another interesting offseason. Aj Probler
- 22:08Speaker 3: always keeps it exciting for us, that is a fact.
- 22:10Speaker 3: He certainly lit it up during the trade deadline. Kyle,
- 22:12Speaker 3: good to see you, and I want to go right
- 22:14Speaker 3: to the names that have popped up that not only
- 22:16Speaker 3: affect the Padres, but it affects fans across the game.
- 22:20Speaker 3: We've seen names like Nick Pavetta and Jake Cronenworth pop
- 22:23Speaker 3: up in trade rumors from legit reporters. So what do
- 22:27Speaker 3: you have for us on what that could look like
- 22:29Speaker 3: and what those players could bring to the table for
- 22:31Speaker 3: other teams too.
- 22:33Speaker 6: Absolutely, the reason the Potters are even having these discussions
- 22:37Speaker 6: is because they are in a serious payroll crunch. The
- 22:40Speaker 6: Padres have said they're going to try and keep payroll
- 22:42Speaker 6: around last year's level, and look, they're exploring sale teams.
- 22:46Speaker 6: Exploring sales don't raise payroll. So with that, they only
- 22:49Speaker 6: have about ten to twelve million dollars to play with,
- 22:52Speaker 6: and they have to try and fill two starting rotation
- 22:54Speaker 6: spots and an everyday first base spot at minimum, so
- 22:58Speaker 6: they need to clear payroll and that's where the these
- 23:00Speaker 6: conversations are coming from. Jake Croninworth is owed a little
- 23:03Speaker 6: over sixty million dollars over the next five years. Nick
- 23:06Speaker 6: Pavetta hasn't opt out after this year, but again he's
- 23:08Speaker 6: going to make about nineteen million this year. So it's
- 23:11Speaker 6: really just going to come down to are the Padres
- 23:13Speaker 6: going to get the kind of trade offers that allow
- 23:16Speaker 6: them to fill most of their holes. They're not going
- 23:18Speaker 6: to do a one for one trade for Nick Poveta.
- 23:20Speaker 6: It would have to be a situation where they get
- 23:22Speaker 6: a major league ready young starter, another player who can
- 23:25Speaker 6: help them this year, and then they can use the
- 23:27Speaker 6: payroll savings to go sign another player, Jake Croninworth as well.
- 23:31Speaker 6: It's going to be a situation where they're going to
- 23:33Speaker 6: be looking for multiple pieces back, So both of them
- 23:35Speaker 6: are going to attract interest and have attracted interest. We
- 23:39Speaker 6: just have to see if ultimately the price is met
- 23:41Speaker 6: where it makes sense for the Padres to move them.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Who's a higher value sell now type of thing, because
- 23:47Speaker 1: we've heard Jake Croninworth ever since he signed his seven
- 23:51Speaker 1: year contract, it was like they're looking to shed, They're
- 23:54Speaker 1: looking to shed the entire seven years. And I was like, Jake.
- 23:57Speaker 1: I texted Jake, I'm like, did you sign it? Did
- 24:00Speaker 1: you sign it with Major League Baseball? Or did you
- 24:01Speaker 1: sign it with the Padres? So whose value is higher
- 24:05Speaker 1: from where I get it? Pavetta's making more this season,
- 24:10Speaker 1: but whose value is where they're going to get the
- 24:12Speaker 1: most or be able to dump more of the money
- 24:14Speaker 1: is kind of what I'm what I'm asking here.
- 24:17Speaker 6: There's no question Nick Pavetta is the more valuable player.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Teams always need frontline starting pitching, and Nick Pavetta took
- 24:23Speaker 6: the leap last year with the Padres. He'd always had
- 24:26Speaker 6: great stuff, great peripherals, but it never really worked out
- 24:30Speaker 6: consistently for him. We saw long stretches of he'd look
- 24:33Speaker 6: great for six or seven starts, and then stretches where
- 24:35Speaker 6: he would look terrible for six or seven starts. Last year,
- 24:38Speaker 6: he took the leap and was consistent pitching like a
- 24:40Speaker 6: frontline starter from Game one to Game one sixty two.
- 24:44Speaker 6: The tricky part with Nick Pavetta is he hasn't opt
- 24:47Speaker 6: out at the end of this year. So are team's
- 24:49Speaker 6: going to look at him as a pitcher that really
- 24:51Speaker 6: only has one year left on his deal because Hoole
- 24:53Speaker 6: realistically opt out, or are they going to look at
- 24:56Speaker 6: him as a pitcher who is under contract for three
- 24:59Speaker 6: more years and there's always the possibility that something goes
- 25:01Speaker 6: wrong and he stays in the deal. Whether teams view
- 25:04Speaker 6: him as a one year rental versus a pitcher who
- 25:07Speaker 6: does have three years left on his deal is going
- 25:09Speaker 6: to make a huge, huge, huge difference in what they're
- 25:12Speaker 6: willing to offer the Padres. Realistically, all things being equal,
- 25:16Speaker 6: he's going to bring back more, but a lot of
- 25:18Speaker 6: it's going to depend on how teams view him and
- 25:20Speaker 6: his contract.
- 25:23Speaker 5: Right the best player on that team is Fernando Tatist
- 25:26Speaker 5: Junior In my opinion, I think he's an absolute stud.
- 25:30Speaker 5: Have teams gone out and try and seen if there's
- 25:32Speaker 5: a possibility of him being moved or is he untouchable
- 25:36Speaker 5: right now?
- 25:36Speaker 6: At this point, Teams at this point in the year
- 25:40Speaker 6: are always having conversations and reaching out talking about any
- 25:43Speaker 6: number of players. Yes, teams have reached out to the
- 25:47Speaker 6: Padres to just kind of gauge where they're at, and
- 25:50Speaker 6: the Padres have been definitive, both publicly and privately. They
- 25:54Speaker 6: are not trading Finante Taste junior. They have no interest
- 25:56Speaker 6: in trading Finance Tatist junior. They have no intent to
- 25:59Speaker 6: trade Finante. They view him as the folkrum a round
- 26:03Speaker 6: which this entire team is built. They want him to
- 26:05Speaker 6: be the centerpiece of the Padres in twenty twenty six,
- 26:08Speaker 6: twenty twenty seven, twenty twenty eight and beyond. At this juncture,
- 26:12Speaker 6: there is zero chance he gets moved. Now, we'll see
- 26:14Speaker 6: what happens six months from you out now, a year
- 26:17Speaker 6: from now, if new ownership comes in, there's all different
- 26:20Speaker 6: dynamics at play. But this offseason, he is not getting moved.
- 26:24Speaker 1: All right, Well, let's go to somebody that did get
- 26:26Speaker 1: moved because of free agency. Robert Suarez got moved and
- 26:31Speaker 1: he signed. He signed with the Braves. What are they getting?
- 26:35Speaker 1: You watched him day in and day out. The numbers,
- 26:38Speaker 1: I feel like speak for themselves. But what are the
- 26:41Speaker 1: Braves getting? And is there a chance of some regression?
- 26:45Speaker 1: And if the Padres had the money, would they have
- 26:47Speaker 1: resigned them themselves?
- 26:50Speaker 6: What the Atlanta Braves are getting is a lockdown, end
- 26:52Speaker 6: of game reliever. Robert Sworez was one of the best
- 26:55Speaker 6: closers in the National League each last two years, and
- 26:58Speaker 6: prior to that, he was one of the best set
- 26:59Speaker 6: up in the National League for two years setting up
- 27:02Speaker 6: Josh Hater. He's someone that can fill both roles and
- 27:05Speaker 6: not just be good at both, but dominant and both.
- 27:07Speaker 6: He had a sub three ERA in both look it's
- 27:09Speaker 6: a fastball he can run up to one hundred and
- 27:12Speaker 6: one oh one, one oh two. His changeup when he
- 27:14Speaker 6: throws it as a really really good pitch. Ice in
- 27:17Speaker 6: his veins. Nothing phases him. He is everything you want
- 27:20Speaker 6: in a late game reliever and closer. There's a tremendous
- 27:23Speaker 6: amount of mental toughness there as well. In terms of
- 27:26Speaker 6: whether the Padres would have resigned him just given the
- 27:28Speaker 6: Podreis needs, and their fundamental need for years now has
- 27:32Speaker 6: been they need more impact on offense. Given the strength
- 27:35Speaker 6: of their bullpen, even without Robert Swoz, they were always
- 27:39Speaker 6: going to need to reallocate this money toward bringing back
- 27:42Speaker 6: an impact bat. So, on the one hand, you understand
- 27:45Speaker 6: Robert Swores is a tremendous talent who will give the
- 27:47Speaker 6: Atlanta Braves a lockdown end of game option in whatever
- 27:51Speaker 6: role they choose to use him in. Reports are will
- 27:53Speaker 6: be a setup man and a backup closer to start.
- 27:56Speaker 6: But for the Podreys, bringing him back just given their
- 27:58Speaker 6: other needs just just never made lot of sense. They really,
- 28:01Speaker 6: really really have to address the starting rotation and the
- 28:04Speaker 6: lineup much more than the bullpen.
- 28:06Speaker 1: You glazed over it a little bit, but he was
- 28:09Speaker 1: People think he's been a closer his entire career. The
- 28:12Speaker 1: run with the Padres, or the run where the Padres
- 28:15Speaker 1: almost made it to the World Series and lost to
- 28:17Speaker 1: the Phillies where Bryce Harper hit the home run against
- 28:19Speaker 1: him was arguably, in my opinion, statistically stuff plus all
- 28:24Speaker 1: that stuff, his best season. Did you see a difference
- 28:28Speaker 1: in Robert Suarez because he was Hey has never been
- 28:31Speaker 1: as dominant as he was that season. Is he better
- 28:35Speaker 1: in the eighth inning? There is there a difference that
- 28:38Speaker 1: you saw from when he became the setup guy to
- 28:42Speaker 1: the closer.
- 28:44Speaker 6: Not really. Again, he's been so good pretty much every season.
- 28:47Speaker 6: You're still talking about eras under three, you know, three
- 28:50Speaker 6: of his four seasons, you're still talking about strikeout rates.
- 28:52Speaker 6: You're still talking about premium stuff. It's small margins. So realistically,
- 28:56Speaker 6: he's someone that you feel comfortable putting in either situation.
- 29:00Speaker 6: And look, yes, people are going to remember him serving
- 29:02Speaker 6: up the home run to Bryce Harper. What they don't
- 29:05Speaker 6: remember is Robert Swarez throw an absolutely ridiculous change up
- 29:08Speaker 6: the previous pitch that Bryce Harper held up on. It
- 29:10Speaker 6: was incredible that Bryce Harper held up on that pitch,
- 29:12Speaker 6: and it's more about Bryce Harper being amazing than any
- 29:15Speaker 6: failures of Robert Swarez. So, Robert Swarez again, from the
- 29:18Speaker 6: moment he came over from Japan, has been dominant in
- 29:21Speaker 6: whatever role he's been asked to fill, and I expect
- 29:24Speaker 6: that to continue with the Braves.
- 29:26Speaker 3: We have a super chat fan question appreciated from Scott Farr.
- 29:31Speaker 3: He said, anyone are free to the Jays talking with
- 29:35Speaker 3: the Padres for a Mason Miller deal Brios and Ricky Tiedeman.
- 29:40Speaker 3: This is exactly what Toronto needs to take over for
- 29:43Speaker 3: Jeff Hoffman. Well, even if you want to entertain that,
- 29:46Speaker 3: I will step in before you've been jump in and
- 29:48Speaker 3: say that ain't gonna get it done.
- 29:54Speaker 6: Again. The Padres just given the situation they're in. And look,
- 29:58Speaker 6: aj Preller has always been most aggressive GM in baseball
- 30:01Speaker 6: since he took over. He is someone that will talk
- 30:04Speaker 6: about big packages, marquee names, tens of millions of dollars
- 30:07Speaker 6: changing hands like it's nothing, a lot of the kind
- 30:10Speaker 6: of trades that most presidents of baseball operations and gms
- 30:12Speaker 6: shy away from. He embraces that said, whether you're talking
- 30:18Speaker 6: about Mason Miller, Nick Pavetted, Jake Cronaworth, the Potters are
- 30:21Speaker 6: not going to trade them without getting significant value back.
- 30:25Speaker 6: And I'm talking multiple players who help them fill multiple
- 30:28Speaker 6: holes in one fell swoop. So again, while Jose Barrios
- 30:32Speaker 6: has obviously had a great career, he was also demoted
- 30:34Speaker 6: from the Blue Jay's rotation at the end of last year.
- 30:37Speaker 6: Ricky Tineman has tremendous stuff. He has never stayed healthy
- 30:40Speaker 6: that's not close to what would get a Mason Miller
- 30:43Speaker 6: trade done. It would have to be impact big leaguers
- 30:45Speaker 6: who are controllable and cheap right now, plus top young prospects.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 30:50Speaker 5: I was gonna go a little bit on Jake Croninworth,
- 30:52Speaker 5: but you kind of hit that one perfectly. My question
- 30:56Speaker 5: to you is you look over at the other side.
- 30:59Speaker 5: The Dodgers just picked up Edwin Dias Padres a product.
- 31:03Speaker 5: I mean, just tell me your thoughts. And even even
- 31:05Speaker 5: as the guy who covers them and talks about him,
- 31:07Speaker 5: like you see something like that, what goes on through
- 31:09Speaker 5: your head?
- 31:09Speaker 4: Is it like, oh God, here we go again.
- 31:13Speaker 6: Look, you know my nearly you know, decade as a
- 31:16Speaker 6: national writer for Baseball America and continuing to cover, you know,
- 31:19Speaker 6: league wide. You understand that the Dodgers have tremendous financial resources.
- 31:24Speaker 6: They spend them wisely, which is something a lot of
- 31:26Speaker 6: other teams with tremendous financial resources cannot say, and they
- 31:30Speaker 6: draft and develop incredibly well. Again, the Dodgers have been
- 31:32Speaker 6: the beast of the NL West for over a decade.
- 31:35Speaker 6: Now you know that they are a force. You're going
- 31:38Speaker 6: to have to deal with them at some point if
- 31:40Speaker 6: you are attempting to compete in the National League. So
- 31:42Speaker 6: on the one hand, yes, you see them sign Edwin
- 31:45Speaker 6: Diaz and you go, yep, they just add another superstar.
- 31:48Speaker 6: At the end of the day, though, that's kind of
- 31:49Speaker 6: the mo for them, and you just understand that's how
- 31:51Speaker 6: they operate. That's what you have to deal with if
- 31:53Speaker 6: you're a team trying to compete with them in the
- 31:55Speaker 6: National League. Now, it's just about trying to make your
- 31:58Speaker 6: roster the best it can possible be so that you
- 32:01Speaker 6: have a shot to maybe beat the Dodgers in a
- 32:04Speaker 6: short series in the playoffs. That's really where you have
- 32:06Speaker 6: to get them. Trying to beat them over one hundred
- 32:08Speaker 6: and sixty two game season. Look, almost no one has
- 32:11Speaker 6: done it in the NS since twenty thirteen. The only
- 32:13Speaker 6: team to do it was the Giants in twenty twenty one,
- 32:15Speaker 6: when the Dodgers won one hundred and six games that year.
- 32:18Speaker 6: So you understand that in order to take down the Dodgers,
- 32:21Speaker 6: it's more about building a team that can hopefully catch
- 32:23Speaker 6: them in a short series because doing so over one
- 32:25Speaker 6: sixty two Look, the facts are, no one's been able
- 32:28Speaker 6: to really do it consistently for over a decade.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Hey, Kyle last one, Oh, go ahead, go ahead?
- 32:35Speaker 4: Kay?
- 32:37Speaker 1: How about the manager situation Craig stamens Obviously everybody hears
- 32:42Speaker 1: you know, Manny Machada was like, oh, we love this guy.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Everybody's come out and said we love this guy. But
- 32:48Speaker 1: I feel like that was kind of said about Shilt
- 32:52Speaker 1: too until Shilt was Shilt was out. So is this
- 32:55Speaker 1: more of a Okay, Craig Stamon's gonna work because he's
- 32:59Speaker 1: already worked with Aj Preller. You know, it's it's clearly
- 33:03Speaker 1: the aj Pereller effect of the drama that comes with
- 33:07Speaker 1: and you know, his constant hovering over. But this Craig
- 33:11Speaker 1: Stamon thing, is there tangible wins and improvements from a
- 33:17Speaker 1: Craig Stamen hiring.
- 33:20Speaker 6: So Craig Stamon and Mike Scheldt are two very very
- 33:22Speaker 6: different personality types. And I think it's important to point
- 33:25Speaker 6: out Mike Scheldt did work in the Pattery's front office
- 33:28Speaker 6: and working a couple different roles before taking over as manager.
- 33:30Speaker 6: So in terms of Craig Stammon, the pluses are he
- 33:34Speaker 6: is a tremendous communicator. He is someone that took on
- 33:37Speaker 6: a leadership role in the Pattery's clubhouse for years, especially
- 33:40Speaker 6: during COVID, he really was the spokesperson for the team
- 33:43Speaker 6: in a time of great uncertainty. He is a natural
- 33:45Speaker 6: leader in a lot of ways, has all the personality
- 33:48Speaker 6: traits you look for as well as the baseball mind.
- 33:51Speaker 6: At the same time, a first year manager, there are
- 33:55Speaker 6: going to be things that you have to learn on
- 33:58Speaker 6: the fly, especially when you have ever coached or managed
- 34:01Speaker 6: at any level of professional baseball. Mike Schultz was an
- 34:04Speaker 6: established manager in the big leagues who had years and
- 34:06Speaker 6: years and years as a coach and manager throughout the Miners.
- 34:09Speaker 6: He didn't have the learning curve that Craig stam is
- 34:11Speaker 6: going to have. So there's no question there are going
- 34:14Speaker 6: to be some things early on, especially that might not
- 34:17Speaker 6: be the smoothest just in terms of game strategy bullpen decisions.
- 34:21Speaker 6: But the hope is Craig Stammond, being as humble as
- 34:24Speaker 6: he is, as smart as he is, that he will
- 34:27Speaker 6: figure it out quickly enough that it doesn't hurt the
- 34:30Speaker 6: Padres for any considerable amount of time as they attempt
- 34:32Speaker 6: to make the playoffs for the fifth time in seven seasons.
- 34:36Speaker 3: Kyle, great insight. You know we love you. And Friar Territory.
- 34:39Speaker 3: You want to let everyone know just a little bit
- 34:40Speaker 3: more about how the team expanded. I mean, we've talked
- 34:43Speaker 3: about it a touch, but just give everyone a taste
- 34:46Speaker 3: of how big the Friar Territory team is getting.
- 34:49Speaker 6: Absolutely, it's still me, Heath Bell and Mike Cameron. We
- 34:52Speaker 6: recently added Marty Caswell, a long time radio host in
- 34:55Speaker 6: San Diego. She's tremendous. I encourage everyone come check it out.
- 34:58Speaker 6: We've got a lot to talk about. This is a
- 35:00Speaker 6: very fascinating team. Really they always are, but especially true
- 35:04Speaker 6: now just given potential impending sale. Aj Prowler still has
- 35:08Speaker 6: yet to sign a contract extension, first year manager and
- 35:10Speaker 6: Craig Scammond. Maybe some big trades. This is a great
- 35:13Speaker 6: time to subscribe. I encourage everyone to check it out.
