Latest / Inside the Birds: A Philadelphia Eagles Podcast / Inside The Tape With Greg Cosell: Was This Jordan Davis' Best Game As A Pro?
Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, welcome to another season of Inside the Tape.
- 0:14On Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher alongside Adam Kaplan,
- 0:18and as always, we bring in Greg Cosell to give
- 0:22us a tape breakdown of the Eagles game. And of
- 0:24course you see Greg, he's an NFL Film senior producer
- 0:27and the host of ESPN's NFL Matchup show. Welcome to
- 0:32the show, Greg, welcome back another season. We're excited about it. Obviously,
- 0:36the Eagles start the season off one to Ohero and
- 0:39some changes for us. This is now a two part
- 0:40show where we do the offense and defensive tape in
- 0:44separate show. So we're excited to have you on and
- 0:46are you ready to bring the scalpel of nerve.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Let's do it all right, let us do it.
- 0:51Speaker 1: We decided Adam and I that we thought we would
- 0:53start defense defensive tape breakdown because look, it was a
- 0:57defensive game. The Eagles went twenty four to twelve over
- 1:00the Cowboys Thursday night at the Leak no point scored
- 1:04by the Cowboys in the second half, so the defense
- 1:07really shown through and obviously Jaalen Carter getting ejected from
- 1:10the game put the defense under the spotlight. So let's
- 1:13go straight to the D line, the edge group. What
- 1:17stood out on tape from you in how the Eagles
- 1:20compensated for the lack of Jaalen Carter.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Well, I thought Jordan Davis played his best game as
- 1:27a pro. Hands down. He was phenomenal in all areas,
- 1:31both in run defense and with some pass rush as well.
- 1:35I thought his paddle level was lower. He just looked
- 1:38like a quicker athlete. I think this is what they
- 1:40had expected or hoped when they drafted him, because now
- 1:44he's what is this his fourth year on him yep, yeah, yeah,
- 1:48I mean he just played stronger and moved quicker, especially
- 1:53as a pass rusher. You saw that a couple of
- 1:55times in the first half where he had two really
- 1:57strong snapshots of that. Overall, I mean where he was
- 2:02one on one versus the center BB, he just dominated him.
- 2:06So that was the first thing you notice when when
- 2:09you watch the tape is just how dominant Jordan Davis was,
- 2:13and hopefully that can continue. You know, the other things
- 2:18I noticed in terms of individuals on defense, and it
- 2:23was Macouba. I thought he was a factor in the
- 2:25run game, both when he was aligned in the box,
- 2:27and playing downhill from the back end. You know. One
- 2:30of the things that really stood out watching his college tape,
- 2:33and it's probably innate. It's something you can't be taught,
- 2:36but it's just part of who he is is he
- 2:38sees the game fast, so he triggers fast and he reacts.
- 2:44But I guess the first thing, just taking a step back, guys,
- 2:47the first thing I really noticed was the Eagles personnel
- 2:51game plan, and we'll see if that continues. When they
- 2:54were in their base defense, which was not that many snaps,
- 2:59I actually, you know, looked up and they only played
- 3:02on trying to see, let's see, they didn't play many
- 3:05snaps of bass. But the point is is that in
- 3:08their base Dejean played outside corner and Sidney Brown was
- 3:12its safety. When they went to their nickel, they moved
- 3:17Dejeene in the slot. They had Jackson on the outside
- 3:21opposite Mitchell, and Macouba was its safety. So Brown was
- 3:24off the field, which makes sense because he's not really
- 3:27a pass defender at all. And the other thing that
- 3:30that stood out was you saw that Mitchell very often
- 3:35traveled with with Pickens, which you know is not something
- 3:38that happened obviously a year ago, and.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It was it was Byron Young real quick when bass
- 3:43right when they had the extra the five man front,
- 3:45the extra lineman, it would be Byron Young, mostly along
- 3:48Sid Yes.
- 3:48Speaker 3: And actually he showed up as well. The guy who
- 3:51did not have a good game, I would say was
- 3:53a Jomo. He did not. He had a snap or two,
- 3:56but overall I was looking for more. I would say
- 4:00josh Usha really showed up as well. I mean his
- 4:03quickness as an edge pass rusher consistently showed up. And
- 4:07that's that's probably a good deal. And I think you'll
- 4:10probably see get more snaps because you know, Jaylyx Hunt
- 4:14is not quite ready to rush the quarterback. He's still
- 4:17learning how to do that, so you know you might
- 4:19start seeing more. He certainly showed up in the game
- 4:22against the Cowboys.
- 4:23Speaker 4: So Greg, first thing, I want to ask about Jordan
- 4:25Davis because you only go by what the tape tells you.
- 4:28It was nothing personal. Yeah, let's face it, you rarely
- 4:32had strong comments that were positive because the tape told
- 4:36you that.
- 4:37Speaker 3: The comments right now, again, I was just for citing
- 4:41the tape right right.
- 4:42Speaker 4: So let me ask you this question because we're not
- 4:46asking you to to you know, to check out what
- 4:49kind of body fat he has. But the thing that
- 4:51struck me in training camp Jeff and I saw him
- 4:54at the Baxtball Club Awards.
- 4:55Speaker 3: Four years ago. Jeff was a four years I was there.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I was there.
- 4:59Speaker 4: He was easily three point fifty if got a huge
- 5:03way overweight, yeap. When I saw him a train of
- 5:06camp this year, I'm like, wait a minute, is that
- 5:07Jordan Davis? He was so lean yeah, which he never
- 5:11would say about Jordan Davis so off tape, because this
- 5:14is what you're looking at.
- 5:15Speaker 3: What does he look like to you?
- 5:16Speaker 4: Physical?
- 5:16Speaker 3: He looked he looked better. I mean he looks thinner.
- 5:19Now again, I don't know his weight, but I'm sure
- 5:21he lost a few pounds. Look the guy. I don't
- 5:26want to sit here and say he's a great athlete,
- 5:27because you know, people have a different definition of what
- 5:30that means. You know, when he ran a four to
- 5:32eight at the combine, always a great athlete. Well we
- 5:34know we can run fast in a straight line. That
- 5:36doesn't necessarily mean he can be a great defensive tackle.
- 5:39But the point is is that he just looked well.
- 5:44The best way to talk about him is his pad
- 5:46level because it doesn't matter how strong you are. If
- 5:50you stand up straight in the NFL, you're gonna get moved.
- 5:54And his pad level was lower. He looked stronger. He
- 5:58was moving quicker and confined space, which is what a
- 6:01defensive tackle is. It's irrelevant that he runs a four
- 6:04to eight forty. He'll have one of those plays a
- 6:06year and people, oh my god, he ran somebody down.
- 6:08But you know that's that's not really relevant to playing
- 6:11his position. So he just I mean, he was a
- 6:15dominant player in that game. He was probably the most
- 6:17dominant defensive player on the field for the Eagles. Well,
- 6:21it's tough to go away from Zach Bond, who pretty
- 6:24interesting might have just ended Miles Sanders' career.
- 6:27Speaker 4: But why do you say that, Greg.
- 6:30Speaker 3: When you're a running back and you cannot run away
- 6:32from a linebacker, that's a problem. Definitely, Bond is such
- 6:36a good player. And I tell you I'd be remiss
- 6:39if I didn't mention Johot Campbell, who I thought showed
- 6:41up as well.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Yeah, hold on to that. We're going to get to
- 6:43the second level in the second. I wanted to ask
- 6:46you again on Jordan Davis because Adam mentioned the new physique.
- 6:50We both made a point in the preseason and training
- 6:53camp was saying physique alone will not get you good
- 6:57pass rush.
- 6:57Speaker 2: You also have to moves. I have a clip that'll
- 7:00take a look of later. I think it was Tyler Smith.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I could have been bab we'll check it out where
- 7:04it looked like he used a nice arm under move
- 7:07to detach and get to Dak Prescott. Are you seeing
- 7:10more hand usage and technique from Jordan Davis, Well.
- 7:13Speaker 3: That has to go. I mean, that's that's part of
- 7:16growing as a pass rusher, no matter how big or
- 7:19strong you may be. Okay, and again, that's that's wonderful
- 7:24because there is some speed to power where sometimes you
- 7:26can just drive a guy back, but at some point
- 7:29you have to play off that contact. You have to
- 7:31be able to use your hands in whatever way you're taught.
- 7:35So you know, you're happy to see that as well.
- 7:38The big question is can he keep it going. I mean,
- 7:41we assume, you know, as we're recording this, the league
- 7:45has not made any determination on Jalen Carter. Correct. The
- 7:48assumption is that he'll play. It's the big national game
- 7:51of the week. It's a rematch of the Super Bowl,
- 7:53I mean, for one, I'd be surprised if he suspended,
- 7:55but you know, you never know. But but the point
- 7:58is is, you know, he also played fifty three snaps,
- 8:01which is the second most snaps of his career. I
- 8:04think I think he played the most against Buffalo a
- 8:06few years ago in that that big game that that
- 8:08seemed like it went on forever. But you know, so look,
- 8:13I'm not saying he's gonna play fifty three snaps every
- 8:15week whence Jalen Carter is there, but if you can
- 8:17get him too thirty five forty snaps on a weekly basis,
- 8:20and he can play like this. Now you've got something.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Greg on that just before we move on. So you
- 8:26saw from beginning and movement technique he didn't look aast
- 8:30because that's, as you put it out many times, when
- 8:32he gets gassed, his techniques bad.
- 8:34Speaker 3: He didn't in this game.
- 8:36Speaker 4: Awesome, that's great, wow, good good.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I mean people have to also remember the tackles don't
- 8:42make plays on every play obviously, that's just not But
- 8:45he never looked gassed. They really hood, which he used
- 8:49to do, and it'd be like he shouldn't be on
- 8:50the field right now.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Right right, Remember that they only played three defensive tackles, right,
- 8:56you know. So Victor Vick's like, hey, this is what
- 8:59gavee hole's on a run guy, that's the issue with him.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, as I understand it.
- 9:03Speaker 3: So look at that's the point.
- 9:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 9:05Speaker 3: The bottom line is this is the NFL guys. At
- 9:07some point, Jordan Davis, as the expression goes as to
- 9:10fish or cut cut bait, he's got to you got
- 9:12to be able to play. He was a first round
- 9:14pick that they traded up for. He's in his fourth season.
- 9:16At some point he's got to play more than twenty
- 9:18snaps a game and be a factor. And he was
- 9:20a big factor, a dominant factor in this game.
- 9:24Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, you know, it's it's interesting, Greg, what I'm
- 9:28I call. I think the Cowboys came out in the
- 9:30second half and really started trying to run the ball.
- 9:32And I thought that they were doing that intentionally because
- 9:34without Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, a snap count was going up,
- 9:38was going up, Young's was going up. He hasn't played
- 9:40a lot of football. But then the lightning delay would came, right.
- 9:44They ran the ball I think three or four straight times. Yeah,
- 9:47they broke the long run by Sanders, but then he fumbled, which,
- 9:51by the way, came after a run the lightning.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Did the fumball happen after the lightning.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Delay the fumble happened? I think No, it was like
- 9:58right before the lightning delay.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Wasn't it.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, it was.
- 10:02Speaker 1: Right before because I remember joking that the Eagles just
- 10:05got this turnover and all the momentum got sapped out
- 10:08of the building because the lightning.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Delay, and then they had to come back out.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Well, the thing is, the play before the fumble was
- 10:15Ferguson dropped a touchdown. Should have been a touchdown, correct,
- 10:18and that was you know, that would have put the
- 10:20Cowboys ahead. So you know, for all the quality defense
- 10:23that the Eagles had, there were a number of drops
- 10:25here that could have changed the game.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Right, all right, So we talked about the interior level.
- 10:31Zach Bahn.
- 10:32Speaker 1: You mentioned that one play Johad Campbell man Craig. Just
- 10:36for me watching I was really these two guys. They're athleticism.
- 10:41I think their range really stands out. I know Nikobe
- 10:44Deane was a pretty good athlete, but when Jagatt Campbell's
- 10:47in there, to me, it looks like these guys are
- 10:48just flying everywhere.
- 10:50Speaker 3: Well, Campbell had a great play where he ran down
- 10:52the scene play speeding range on a throat to span
- 10:56four down the scene in the middle of the third quarter,
- 10:58and not only did it show his athleticism, but it
- 11:00was recognition and reaction. Look, the guy six three to forty,
- 11:03he's he's he's the best athlete. He's probably the best
- 11:06athlete on the team and on the defense. The guy's
- 11:08a freakish athlete. I mean taking nothing away from n
- 11:11Kobe Dean, who I was told in the building they
- 11:13thought played really well over the last seven eight games
- 11:16last year until he got hurt. But he's not going
- 11:18to get his job back because Jehad Campbell is sixty
- 11:20three to forty. Yeah, and he's a better athlete.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Hey all that, Greg, looking at your notes here. So
- 11:28as an edge rusher, I know he did a little bit.
- 11:30Speaker 3: What do you think christ twice? Not very often, right.
- 11:33Speaker 4: But did they line him up particling at edge or
- 11:37did he blitz at all?
- 11:38Speaker 3: From Well, if he's lined up on the edge, I
- 11:40don't usually view that as a blitz, but I guess
- 11:43maybe it's considered that, you know, he did a few times.
- 11:47I can't remember how many. But yeah, that wasn't something
- 11:51they did with regularity. So but you know they do.
- 11:54They do take when he lined up on the edge
- 11:58almost every time except I think one time he started
- 12:02stacked and then shifted to on the edge. So again
- 12:06I don't you know, I don't know the reason Vick
- 12:07does that, but that's that's the way they do it.
- 12:10Baughn did the same thing last year a lot, where
- 12:12he would start stacked and then walk up to the edge.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Right, So it's not a six man it was really
- 12:18they were a nickel and he would.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Come down to be in the front.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Yeah, they do it nickel, right.
- 12:22Speaker 2: And then I think sometimes they do that in third
- 12:24and medium when.
- 12:25Speaker 1: They think that the offense still might run and they
- 12:27want to have a little bit more up front.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Anything else, but about Bond and Campbell that really stand
- 12:33out to you. I do have some stuff that we'll
- 12:35look at.
- 12:37Speaker 3: No, I mean we kind of talked about it, you know,
- 12:38I mean, I can't you know, I'm just.
- 12:40Speaker 1: A great hustle, great hustle like you mentioned to chase
- 12:44down Miles Sanders. I mean, I know we can knock
- 12:46Miles Sanders. But Zach Bonn really finished that play.
- 12:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and there's no question that, you know. I mean, look,
- 12:52Bughn can't run, but you know, Sanders was was. And
- 12:55the crazy thing was is Bond was trying to knock
- 12:57the ball out even you know, and he still was
- 13:00gaining ground.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Yeah, I also thought there was a play Greg where
- 13:03Bond successfully defended a corner route that reminded me of
- 13:07the Jacksonville game.
- 13:09Speaker 3: First, Yeah, you're talking about Yeah, you're talking about.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, which just really shows you. I mean, he's
- 13:14really just in such a in a year span, he's
- 13:16come such a far away with his his recognition and
- 13:19ability to see things really good. All right, well, I
- 13:22guess we have to, you know, we we have to
- 13:23talk about a few things that didn't go so well.
- 13:25So the number two cornerbacks, so, by virtue of Vic's
- 13:29decision to have Quinnon Mitchell travel with George Pickens, it
- 13:35left to Dori Jackson on CD, which was not.
- 13:39Speaker 3: I think the fact that Dejene played in the base
- 13:41tells you that they're probably still searching for a corner
- 13:45opposite Mitchell, and they may still be searching. We'll see
- 13:49if Bennett, you know, ends up filling that spot. I
- 13:51personally think he will, but I'm not there. I don't
- 13:53know what the feeling is in the building, but I
- 13:56think that Bennett will end up. You know, he played
- 13:58seven snaps because and came out just do an injury
- 14:01and then came back in. So they obviously weren't ready
- 14:04to let Bennett, you know, rock and roll. But we'll
- 14:05see what happens going forward. But they're telling you that
- 14:08they're not quite comfortable with Jackson. We don't have to
- 14:10guess that, right.
- 14:12Speaker 4: Let me it's a question real quick on Jackson because
- 14:15they knock on him. We know about the injuries, smaller guy.
- 14:19There were people in the league we spoke with Jeff
- 14:21and I to get and tell them what you know,
- 14:22what's what's was the issue with the Giants. Some teams
- 14:25didn't quite Frankly, don't think he ran as well as
- 14:28he used to, because you know, he was a speed guy.
- 14:30Speaker 3: How did he how did movement?
- 14:32Speaker 2: How did he look?
- 14:32Speaker 4: To you a little based on what you saw.
- 14:36Speaker 3: I mean, that's a hard thing to say, because he
- 14:38got beat a few times. You know. I think the
- 14:40one that was particularly noticeable was the crosser with Ceedee Lamb,
- 14:45because you know Lamb is is. I mean, he's not slow,
- 14:48but he's not a burner. Jackson was not making up
- 14:50any ground at all. You know. It's those kinds of
- 14:53plays where you think, if you have speed, you're going
- 14:55to make up some ground. So look, he's played in
- 14:57the league for a number of years, he's had some injury.
- 15:00You know, he's a veteran. That's why they brought him
- 15:02in because they needed a veteran presence. You know, once
- 15:04Slay left, they were uncertain as to who would play
- 15:07corner opposite Mitchell, so they brought in a veteran, you know,
- 15:11figuring okay, you know, I don't know whether they saw
- 15:13that a stopgap or where they thought he could still
- 15:15play at a reasonably high level. But obviously through the
- 15:18offseason and training camp, they're now telling you they're not
- 15:21sure he can do that.
- 15:23Speaker 1: All right, as we stay in the second level, what
- 15:26were your what did the tape show about Andrew mccooby.
- 15:29You said he played in the nickel when the Eagles
- 15:32were a nickel.
- 15:33Speaker 2: He would come in. Sidney Brown was off the field show.
- 15:36Speaker 3: I like mccooby. I think he's a good player. I
- 15:38think he's smart, he's aware, you know, the biggest issue
- 15:41with him or can he stay healthy, because even though
- 15:44they put on some weight, you can tell body type
- 15:46he's you know, he's never going to be too ten
- 15:48or two twelve. He just doesn't have that kind of body.
- 15:50And he's a super aggressive player. But you know, he's
- 15:54just a very very aware player. You know, the reason
- 15:57they drafted him in the second round is because in
- 16:00Vic's defense, and again, every position if Vick was sitting here,
- 16:04we tell you every position is important, you know the
- 16:06way coaches thick but in that defense, linebackers and safeties
- 16:10are absolutely critical. And they drafted him because he's such
- 16:14a smart, savvy, aware, intuitive player. And you can see
- 16:18the tape. You saw that on tape in Texas. You
- 16:21saw that on tape in this game. The guy he's
- 16:24just one of those guys that's the kind of stuff
- 16:26that is hard to teach. You know, he just sees
- 16:28the game really fast. In fact, somebody from the front
- 16:32office who I know very well, texted me and oh,
- 16:37he'd heard me talk about Prescott and he said, you
- 16:39nail Prescott. And then we just started going back and
- 16:41forth and I told him how much I like Macouba,
- 16:45And you know, we both agree that he just sees
- 16:47the game fast. I mean, he's one of those guys.
- 16:49He just sees it so back. In many ways, when
- 16:53you're a safety, you're on the back end. You've got
- 16:55to see it all. You know, it's very hard to
- 16:57teach a quarterback to quote unquote see it the game.
- 17:01Some guys do automatically, and other guys they might have
- 17:04great physical talent, but they just don't see it right.
- 17:07One thing.
- 17:09Speaker 4: As we move on here, though, Let's say someday the
- 17:12Eagles decide, you know what, and we know Dejean's played
- 17:15a little corner this year so far in one game, right,
- 17:18if they decide next year, you know what, and how
- 17:21he doesn't make a trade the trade down leant to
- 17:22get a starting corner who'd be here for a while,
- 17:24and they they decide next year, Coop's going to go
- 17:26to corner. You did tell us that you like, correctly,
- 17:30if I'm wrong, you like mccoopa's tape as a nickel
- 17:33at Clemson.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Correct, Well, he did play nickel at Clemson. You know,
- 17:37I don't know if they see him that way. That's
- 17:39that's another question. I don't know what they say. You know,
- 17:41the other issue, and it's not an issue today and
- 17:43it's not an issue tomorrow. But how old is blanket? Shit?
- 17:50That's all? Yeah, he's got time because he's a really
- 17:55good player.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yep, all right, you're ready to look at some tape
- 17:58and break it down for us?
- 17:59Speaker 1: Sure, And as always for those who are listening on
- 18:02the podcast platform, we'll give you all the information.
- 18:04Speaker 2: We'll set it up, we'll let you know audibly what's
- 18:07going on so that you're not lost in the fray.
- 18:10Speaker 1: So one of the guys that we've already talked about
- 18:13was Jordan Davis, So why don't we put him under
- 18:16the microscope here? Hey, you know that one guy in
- 18:19the group chat who hit a five leg parlay a
- 18:21week one and he wouldn't shut up about it for
- 18:23the rest of the season.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, yeah, it.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Could be him, It could be you, and we would
- 18:30all want to be you. My bookie makes it stupid
- 18:34easy to get in on the action, whether it's college ball,
- 18:38NFL Super Contest, and Survivor pools. All the spreads, player
- 18:43props and in game lines that you could want all.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Under one roof. Come on, who wants more than that?
- 18:50Speaker 6: If you're new to my bookie, use our code the
- 18:55Birds THG B I RDS the Birds, the code and
- 19:01any bet you choose up to five hundred.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Dollars is fully covered.
- 19:05Speaker 6: Make your play and if it doesn't hit, you get
- 19:08it right back when you opt in using your.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Bet back bonus token. There is no better time to
- 19:15jump in right now, no.
- 19:17Speaker 6: Better place to play football is back.
- 19:20Speaker 3: Let's make some money with my bookie.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And this is in the third quarter, Greg, It is
- 19:26I believe a second and twenty two.
- 19:28Speaker 2: So they're in pass rush mode.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And as you mentioned, we don't normally see Jordan Davis
- 19:34a lot in the four man front, but you will
- 19:38this year, right right, So I'm gonna run it and
- 19:42let you kind of talk about what you see here.
- 19:44As he's lined up over left guard Tyler Smith, I
- 19:48believe this is a batted pass.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Yeah, but look at a push him back. Just look
- 19:53at pushing back. And by the way, Jeff, if you
- 19:56could run that again, notice how much lower the paed level.
- 20:00Look how he does not stand up straight. Just watch
- 20:02this as the play starts. Ye, yeah, Lowie is right there.
- 20:08Speaker 7: He's not standing up straight so he can use the
- 20:11force of his core and his lower body to drive
- 20:15Tyler Smith, who by the way, is not a small
- 20:17man and a very good player.
- 20:18Speaker 3: He can use the force of his core. Most of
- 20:21this comes from the core and your and you know,
- 20:23your lower body. You know, everybody just assumes, oh, you
- 20:26got strong hands. And by the way, strong hands matter
- 20:29because a lot of times you can see knock back
- 20:30power initially you know, with your hands, but when you
- 20:33can drive a person back like this, that's not just
- 20:36your hands, that's your core. And I know for a
- 20:39fact from someone in the building that they've worked really
- 20:43hard with him on his core because your core. You know,
- 20:47for normal people to like us, your core is so critical.
- 20:51I mean that's the bottom line. You know. It all
- 20:54comes from your core. That's why Lane Johnson could do
- 20:56the double undermove. You know, you know it's all in
- 20:59your care and you can in that. I was gonnay,
- 21:04were you gonna say for the shop, No, I'm just
- 21:06gonna say you can see it's it's pad level. I
- 21:08mean right there. Look, did you see last year like
- 21:11that people back? No?
- 21:14Speaker 1: Yeah, By the way, to use your your own phrase, Greg,
- 21:18like you once described him coming out of college as
- 21:20a player who has strength but not power if I
- 21:24but he's now showing this is moving all pro left.
- 21:28Speaker 3: Power is strength with movement.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Right, and there it is. And then he has the
- 21:32athleticism ana jump up and tip that pass.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and think about it.
- 21:36Speaker 3: It does.
- 21:37Speaker 4: You could bench five hundred pounds. But if you have
- 21:39if you get stood up a bad technique, you're like
- 21:42someone can only lift the hunter.
- 21:44Speaker 3: You must be with me at the gym, then, Adam,
- 21:45when I'm doing.
- 21:46Speaker 2: That really.
- 21:49Speaker 4: According to somebody I don't know.
- 21:53Speaker 1: Let's let's look at another one that was pretty impressive
- 21:57from Jordan Davis. This one is in the uh forget
- 22:00what he's here.
- 22:02Speaker 3: He's a two I just just on the inside shoulder
- 22:05of Tyler Smith.
- 22:06Speaker 1: Right, and this is what I was talking about Greg
- 22:09with the hand move, the hand usage, that arm under.
- 22:12Speaker 2: Oh yeah, so you're right.
- 22:13Speaker 1: BB takes him on kind of a down block there,
- 22:15right because it's the play action pass and watch.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Right because they get right.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Wow, So this is he's not a big center either.
- 22:24Speaker 2: No, but we've seen two things.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Now.
- 22:26Speaker 1: We've seen him play with power and then this one
- 22:27we see him not only play with power but a
- 22:30little while.
- 22:31Speaker 3: And then right there with the right arm to clear him.
- 22:34So he drives him back with power and then he
- 22:37clears them with his right arm.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And then the pursuit there's the pursuit to uh almost
- 22:42had that, he almost had him there.
- 22:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm got a lot of lucky here, but this hey,
- 22:47it worked.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Yep, absolutely, So now's there.
- 22:50Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I mean there were plenty of plays
- 22:52like this with with Jordan Davis in this game. He
- 22:55I can't you know, look, as Adam said, you know
- 22:58when I talk about it's what I see on tape.
- 23:01I mean, this is if he continues to play like this,
- 23:04this guy is going to have an all Pro season.
- 23:06I mean he was a dominant force inside right.
- 23:10Speaker 1: All right, another player. Now we're going to go to
- 23:11the second level here. We mentioned a play from Jahad Campbell,
- 23:17rookie linebacker that I thought was really impressive here where
- 23:21he basically, you know, runs the pole right as they
- 23:23call it, down the field to defend the tight end.
- 23:26Speaker 3: This with the scene to span Ford, right, I believe.
- 23:28Speaker 1: It was give a little fast forward as we just
- 23:31take a bird's eye view of it here.
- 23:34Speaker 3: But look at the recognition too.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Yes, that's what I wanted to get at with you.
- 23:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna rewind it because it looks like you would think,
- 23:40just based on the way the release is that Zach
- 23:43Bond's going to have this guy.
- 23:44Speaker 2: But it's not that way. So go ahead, no, tell
- 23:47me what you see.
- 23:48Speaker 3: Well, the reason it's not is because of the of
- 23:50the motion across the formation to three by one. If
- 23:54they stay two by two, Bond would have probably been
- 23:57the hole to. I don't know this for a fact,
- 23:58but that would be my yes, right, you know, I
- 24:02think it's somewhat educated. You know my guests here because
- 24:04you can see they bump, they bump over based on
- 24:07the motion. So now what happens is is Campbell becomes
- 24:11you know, the whole defender here.
- 24:14Speaker 1: Yeah, now I'm freezing it here because he recognizes that.
- 24:17You can see Campbell recognizes as you mentioned. But he's
- 24:20still pretty a good distance with some traffic there, but
- 24:23takes a great angle, right, I mean, this is this
- 24:26is where the athleticism shines.
- 24:27Speaker 3: At I mean, look at him. Yeah.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I shouldn't have said traffic because it's almost like
- 24:32a switch off. But I mean he he sees Bond,
- 24:35Bong goes the other guy and right there he starts
- 24:37to make up ground a.
- 24:38Speaker 2: Couple of yards here, yep, and boom.
- 24:42Speaker 1: That's really good at that's I mean, this is a
- 24:43guy playing his first game.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Yeah, no, he and there was a play early in
- 24:49the game where he really showed some power, some stack
- 24:51and shed. I mean, he's really an improving player and
- 24:54he's just a phenomenal athlete.
- 24:57Speaker 4: The instincts, Greg, where the question because he was so
- 25:00new to linebacker, as you know. And that's the thing
- 25:04that stuns me, Jeff, and I saw us in training camp.
- 25:08He had a number of plays and practice.
- 25:10Speaker 3: Also have a great way of teaching backers because that
- 25:13look at what's that boring? Bobby King.
- 25:15Speaker 4: Bobby King the line Packers coaches fit by.
- 25:17Speaker 1: The way, you see how he sees the tight end,
- 25:20put his hand out and he at the last minute,
- 25:22Campbell himself gets his hands out, but he never saw
- 25:25the ball.
- 25:26Speaker 2: He basically breaking up.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Bard did a pretty good job here with late hands,
- 25:32but Campbell reacted so quick once he saw his hand
- 25:35That's exactly he reacted.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah, this is by the way I play.
- 25:38Speaker 1: I'm sure Greg, you've seen a million times from Dak
- 25:40to either for all of his time.
- 25:41Speaker 2: He loves the tight end scene.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Yeah, well it was also you know, two shell coverage,
- 25:46so the middle's open, and you know he's figuring that
- 25:49he's got this throat, which technically he does. You know
- 25:52what I mean. He didn't make a bad.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Read, right, No, no, not at all. It wasn't even that.
- 25:56It's not that he was late with it.
- 25:57Speaker 1: It was just I don't think people realize how quick
- 26:00Johd Campbell is.
- 26:01Speaker 3: By the way quarterbacks are taught. I remember having this
- 26:04conversation a hundred times with Jaws, and I am sure
- 26:07it's the same today that if you see the back
- 26:09of a defender, you throw the ball because he can't
- 26:11see the ball, right.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Yeap, absolutely, yep, his back is there the whole way.
- 26:15Speaker 2: Man.
- 26:16Speaker 1: I'm sure Dak is like, I can't believe I didn't
- 26:18complete this pass, so unbelievable.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Good stuff there from Jehad Campbell. All Right, I.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Said, you know, we have to see the ugly a
- 26:25little bit too, So we'll take a look at a
- 26:28Dori Jackson on.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Ceedee lamb.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Now you thought, which one to you, Greg, is the
- 26:35one where you say, come on, is it the twenty
- 26:36six yard or the thirty four yards?
- 26:38Speaker 3: It was the one on third and one down inside
- 26:40the red zone where it was a reduced split by
- 26:44Lamb and he just turned him all around and he
- 26:46beat him badly. It was a third one.
- 26:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I think this is it. I could be wrong.
- 26:53Speaker 3: You're only in the game. There you go, they reduced
- 26:56to see they reduced lamb. Lamb goes, he shifts mm hm.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Why does that disrupt Adore so much? That shift?
- 27:05Speaker 3: This doesn't disrupt him. It just means he has a
- 27:07lot more space because they're gonna it's third and one,
- 27:09so they're gonna be playing man, right, you know. So
- 27:12now he's got a lot more space because his lamb
- 27:14can go anywhere. He can go inside, he can go outside. Yeah,
- 27:18you know. So he starts inside and he's and he's
- 27:20actually what Jack Jackson's trying to play his leverage. He's
- 27:24trying to play to his help because you notice how
- 27:27you know he's playing to his outside. Now. The problem is,
- 27:30once you turn your body like like he does right there,
- 27:33you can't cover an outside breaking route. You can't. There's
- 27:36not a human being alive that can do that.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Yeah, And would you say CD's a little rare in
- 27:41that he's a tall, lean athlete who can sort of well, just.
- 27:44Speaker 3: If you go back a little bit, look how close
- 27:47CD comes to him. He stepped, as the expression is,
- 27:50he steps on his toes. So that's a great route
- 27:52by CD. By the way, Dotson did the exact same
- 27:54thing when it's fifty one yarder when he stepped on
- 27:57the toes of I forget who it was.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Might have been blanned, but but I'm sorry it was.
- 28:05Speaker 3: It was Elim that's correct, But I mean he's you know,
- 28:07he he took him. This is this is just the
- 28:09subtleties of route running, you know. Instead of rushing the route,
- 28:13you know, and saying, oh, I got to get there,
- 28:15I got to get there because it's a vertical type route,
- 28:17you know, Lamb showed great patience and made sure that
- 28:21he stepped on the toes of Jackson, which made it
- 28:23even harder for Jackson because now you know, look that's
- 28:26a great freeze. Yeah right, yeah, that's a great freeze.
- 28:29Look how close Lamb is to Jackson.
- 28:31Speaker 1: Yep, yeah, I mean that's that's that's a very difficult
- 28:34recovery from Corner.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Because one other thing, Greg, is that throughout this game
- 28:41just seemed like the pressure was not great. Did that
- 28:43look like to you in case defensive pressure.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Not great, I would say not great. Yeah, And I
- 28:49thought that played well. And I was quite frankly surprised
- 28:52based on my film study of last year. I think
- 28:55he supposedly lost weight. Maybe that allowed him to clear
- 28:58his hips when he threw the ball. He did not
- 29:00do last year very often, so you know, but he
- 29:05threw the ball well. I mean, believe me, he that
- 29:07should have been a touchdown to Ferguson. We saw Lamb
- 29:09have you know, three drops that he never has. You know,
- 29:12one of them was a big, big play in the
- 29:13fourth quarter. You know, another one was a dig ball
- 29:17in the second half that would have been a first
- 29:19down on third down. You know, So you don't see
- 29:21that very often, but you know it happens.
- 29:24Speaker 4: One question, one fallow up speaking of past rush and
- 29:27Egles did signs to Darius Smith. What are your thoughts
- 29:29and make sure we asked you about him.
- 29:31Speaker 3: I like it. I thought he played well for Detroit
- 29:34last year. I think that tells you that they're probably
- 29:39not yet comfortable with Jylex Hunt rushing the quarterback because
- 29:42they're looking now for an edge guy that can do that.
- 29:45And uh, you know, Again, I don't know kind of
- 29:47shape he's in because he hasn't been anywhere since the
- 29:50season ended, and you know, I don't know if he's
- 29:52going to be ready to go this Sunday against the Chiefs.
- 29:55But uh, you know, maybe he is. Maybe he can
- 29:58play to all snaps or you know, or fifteen snaps.
- 30:01I mean, he's not playing forty snaps. So we don't
- 30:04know the answer to that. But you know, to me
- 30:06as a situational player, he's fine. You're not signing him
- 30:10to play forty snaps, right.
- 30:12Speaker 2: He's a bigger guy, Greg, I'm wondering if he's long.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and have you seen any tape, whether with Cleveland.
- 30:18Speaker 2: Or who else?
- 30:20Speaker 3: Was he with Detroit?
- 30:22Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 30:22Speaker 1: Yeah, of him moving inside and rushing.
- 30:25Speaker 3: In his career. Absolutely, he's moved around a lot. He's
- 30:29a state and he can stand up inside. Teams have
- 30:31used him that way. No, No, he's he can play
- 30:34both and and he's he can do it from multiple
- 30:37positions as a stand up guy or with his hand
- 30:39in the ground. He's a really intriguing guy. Awesome, good,
- 30:44I'm not mistaken. He's the guy from Kentucky who played
- 30:46in college with Bud dupree.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Oh okay, I didn't even realize that.
- 30:50Speaker 3: I'm sure that that's a Darius Smith.
- 30:53Speaker 1: Great well as a great overview of the Eagles defense
- 30:56from the season opener, and of course, on the next episode,
- 30:59we'll get you the entire tape breakdown of the Eagles
- 31:02offense for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 31:05Speaker 1: You just watched the first twenty twenty five edition of
- 31:09Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell. Catchya on the next one.
