- 1:36Speaker 1: Retirement is somewhere around the corner. Yah. I ain't gonna lie.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I can't do this all the time.
- 1:41Speaker 2: But the channel is nice and lively, so let's keep
- 1:46Speaker 2: it going. We were trying to get to I think
- 1:49Speaker 2: like fifteen k. We did that, so appreciate you. But
- 1:54Speaker 2: that is not the end of the goal. So let's
- 1:57Speaker 2: just keep going to see how far this goes. You
- 1:59Speaker 2: know what I'm saying. But speaking of content and reasons
- 2:03Speaker 2: to subscribe to this channel, if you're domb though, if
- 2:06Speaker 2: you're done though. Okay, we did a last week. We
- 2:11Speaker 2: did a special review of the clips new album Like
- 2:15Speaker 2: God Sort them out. Shout out to the homie AK
- 2:17Speaker 2: who came through to help me kind of break down
- 2:21Speaker 2: our thoughts, feelings, impressions about the album. And you know,
- 2:27Speaker 2: there was a lot to unpack because that's just what
- 2:30Speaker 2: the album was. So if you're curious about my thoughts
- 2:34Speaker 2: on that album, go check out that video. If you're like, man,
- 2:39Speaker 2: how long is it? I don't know if I can
- 2:41Speaker 2: watch all of that I feel you because I'm like that.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I'll just tell you like this, it is definitely in
- 2:47Speaker 2: my top five of the year. Easy, but check out
- 2:51Speaker 2: the video, support the content I'm saying, right, But now
- 2:55Speaker 2: it's a new week. So with that being said, shout
- 3:00Speaker 2: out to hip HOPDX dot com and Brosure for heads.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Complex.
- 3:05Speaker 2: Yeah sometimes I check out Complex too, and a couple
- 3:08Speaker 2: of places where I'm getting some of these stories from.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Let's get right into the business dots.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So while the Clips were taking the hip hop internet
- 3:21Speaker 2: world by storm with their rollout, with the anticipation of
- 3:27Speaker 2: their album after fifteen years, let God sort them out
- 3:31Speaker 2: and meeting the hype around this album, just celebrating Clips
- 3:39Speaker 2: in hip hop, Drake was in the UK as usual,
- 3:43Speaker 2: trying to cause distractions. Not saying it can't be in
- 3:47Speaker 2: the UK doing the tour out, but what I am
- 3:49Speaker 2: saying or London in general, right, But what I am
- 3:52Speaker 2: saying is we saw him do this with Australia when
- 3:57Speaker 2: the Super Bowl thing was about to happen because that
- 4:00Speaker 2: was the focus in the US in hip hop, so
- 4:04Speaker 2: he wanted to seem unbothered and then ironically cut the
- 4:08Speaker 2: show short after the super Bowl had came and gone right,
- 4:13Speaker 2: didn't even fulfill the dates because it was all about
- 4:17Speaker 2: getting away, at least he thought getting away with his
- 4:20Speaker 2: smoke down Hoodio went the hood with the Bullet City.
- 4:25Speaker 2: So it kind of felt like, Okay, here go my
- 4:28Speaker 2: rival push a t who. You know, they not really
- 4:31Speaker 2: going back and forth, but Kendrick is featured on the album.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Kendrick is not really talking directly about Drake in his verse,
- 4:39Speaker 1: but here we go again.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Leading up to the Clips album, it was all about
- 4:44Speaker 2: this Iceman album and a video and a song what
- 4:47Speaker 2: did I Miss? And a show or tour in the
- 4:53Speaker 2: UK where you know, some of the stuff he was
- 4:56Speaker 2: doing was you know, pretty dope. But it was to
- 5:00Speaker 2: as a look at me. You know, I'm still alive, y'all,
- 5:03Speaker 2: still got the smoke hoodie with the smoke fuller os
- 5:07Speaker 2: coming out on me. You know, I'm still alive. So
- 5:11Speaker 2: in a lot of ways, he says this thing, and
- 5:15Speaker 2: I would hate to just think, oh, well, that's just
- 5:18Speaker 2: Drake's opinion, because since this battle, everything Drake says is
- 5:25Speaker 2: about acknowledging what happened. And I feel like, as a
- 5:30Speaker 2: fan of Drake right, all he does is make it
- 5:34Speaker 2: worse for when we have to hear from him, see
- 5:37Speaker 2: him a new record, because he goes out of his
- 5:41Speaker 2: way to remind us that he lost right in his actions.
- 5:47Speaker 2: He reminds us that he's not like us. It's just
- 5:50Speaker 2: not a hit record. He just reminds you of that
- 5:53Speaker 2: because he keeps rewinding back. And some would say, well, why, well,
- 6:00Speaker 2: how is this that?
- 6:01Speaker 1: Right?
- 6:02Speaker 2: Well, one, you're in the UK and you're saying and
- 6:06Speaker 2: he didn't just say better than the US, So let's
- 6:08Speaker 2: be clear. He said better than the US and even
- 6:11Speaker 2: Canada UK has the best rappers. Now that's almost like
- 6:19Speaker 2: admitting and not to say that's true, but admitting that
- 6:23Speaker 2: in the US they're definitely not feeling Drake in a
- 6:28Speaker 2: way we used to, right, and that could mean like,
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know, paching what's happening, what people are saying, what
- 6:36Speaker 2: the media is saying about him, maybe even thinking about
- 6:40Speaker 2: doing the show, but kind of feeling like maybe I
- 6:43Speaker 2: can or I don't want to do a show in
- 6:46Speaker 2: the US, and it just goes south, right, because the
- 6:49Speaker 2: US is more likely to be in a situation where
- 6:52Speaker 2: they're shouting, you know, not like us, and they then
- 6:55Speaker 2: bought a damn Drake ticket, and plus gn X is
- 6:59Speaker 2: still doing what it's doing as far as the tour,
- 7:03Speaker 2: So it just seemed like he was making a statement
- 7:06Speaker 2: just because of where he was, but also trying to
- 7:10Speaker 2: take a shot at his biggest critics is the US,
- 7:14Speaker 2: because we really have more of a problem with you
- 7:18Speaker 2: following a lawsuit for a battle. So now he's trying
- 7:23Speaker 2: to write the narrative and just say, well, the US
- 7:29Speaker 2: opinion is not as great as it was because they
- 7:33Speaker 2: don't even have the better rappers in the world.
- 7:36Speaker 1: It's the UK.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Now, I took it two ways, right, pause, I guess
- 7:44Speaker 2: I took it two ways.
- 7:46Speaker 1: Right, Let's just keep it what we're talking about.
- 7:49Speaker 2: On one hand, it's like, okay, if he's comparing rappers
- 7:55Speaker 2: of today and I don't mean Benny and Fredigate and
- 8:00Speaker 2: he ain't talking them about I don't think he's talking
- 8:02Speaker 2: about them. I think he's talking about commercially successful, popular
- 8:07Speaker 2: you know, the most popular rappers.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Saying UK's version of that, UK's.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Version of well, not version they started drill, but drill
- 8:19Speaker 2: or trap or the style of rapping is better than
- 8:23Speaker 2: the guys in the US. That seems kind of weird,
- 8:29Speaker 2: but I'll get to it. Well, no, let me just
- 8:32Speaker 2: say that seems kind of weird to say because a
- 8:35Speaker 2: lot of his contemporaries who he messed with, We're not
- 8:38Speaker 2: just talking about the people who are against him.
- 8:41Speaker 1: That's a slap in the face to a lot of
- 8:42Speaker 1: people from the US that he cool with, right, Like,
- 8:46Speaker 1: that's like saying, Okay, I'm cool with Yati, Right, UK
- 8:52Speaker 1: rappers are better than you. He's cool with twenty one Savage,
- 8:58Speaker 1: even though we know his paperwork says he is from
- 9:00Speaker 1: the UK, So maybe that's what he meant. But you
- 9:03Speaker 1: know what I mean, it's almost like, Okay, they're the
- 9:05Speaker 1: guys who you would like to say the UK is
- 9:09Speaker 1: better than, right, who are your rivals. But then there
- 9:13Speaker 1: are the guys who are from the US who you're
- 9:17Speaker 1: still cool with, and you're saying that they can match
- 9:21Speaker 1: up to these guys. Now, on the second hand, I
- 9:27Speaker 1: think he was just doing what he was doing, right.
- 9:29Speaker 2: He was just trying to feel the love and get
- 9:31Speaker 2: the admiration of UK rappers because just like Australia, it's
- 9:39Speaker 2: a safe space. In America, we hostile over our hip hop,
- 9:44Speaker 2: so there could actually be no place he can go
- 9:48Speaker 2: without some form of harassment about you know, the battle
- 9:54Speaker 2: with Kendrick, and maybe that's bothering him in a lot
- 9:57Speaker 2: of ways, like he keeps trying to get back to
- 10:01Speaker 2: status but he can't. And again, some of it is
- 10:05Speaker 2: because of him. Some of it is like you're taking
- 10:08Speaker 2: a selfie and sharing it with the world with your ads, well,
- 10:12Speaker 2: so your call audience where you get your ads from. Like,
- 10:15Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, You just keep doing things
- 10:20Speaker 2: to say Kendrick was right, right, and you do it
- 10:25Speaker 2: in spite of oh, he said my abs are fake boom,
- 10:27Speaker 2: check this out, even if they're real.
- 10:29Speaker 1: At this point now people don't care.
- 10:31Speaker 2: They don't know because they feel like you've been lying
- 10:33Speaker 2: to them about everything the whole time and it's not
- 10:36Speaker 2: just what Kendrick says. So I kind of looked at
- 10:40Speaker 2: this like, in one way, he's manipulating the artists and
- 10:47Speaker 2: the people over there in the UK that were at
- 10:49Speaker 2: that show who love him, you know, or or cool
- 10:52Speaker 2: with him, and then in another way, he's disrespecting the
- 10:57Speaker 2: people who he's cool with in the US and a
- 10:59Speaker 2: lot of and you know, I think that was his
- 11:01Speaker 2: whole thing about saying Canada, you know, because it was
- 11:05Speaker 2: more like of an opinion of like, nah, just on
- 11:08Speaker 2: some hip hop. You know, I just feel like y'all
- 11:10Speaker 2: the best. It just seems weird because I'm like, don't
- 11:12Speaker 2: you think you the best? You're from Canada? What I mean,
- 11:15Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:15Speaker 1: It just was weird.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Now, the question before we move on is is it true?
- 11:24Speaker 1: It is not, It's not true.
- 11:27Speaker 2: It's tough to say because if we're talking about history,
- 11:33Speaker 2: the US is the blueprint for anybody outside of the US.
- 11:38Speaker 1: It is the blueprint for what you do.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Now, every region that developed the sound, that sound that
- 11:48Speaker 2: was developed is their own, but there's a blueprint nineteen
- 11:54Speaker 2: seventy seven and all of that that was in the
- 11:57Speaker 2: Bronx New York City in general right started to spread
- 12:04Speaker 2: to the West Coast because West Coast rappers have been
- 12:08Speaker 2: on record. I've watched a ton of interviews where there
- 12:10Speaker 2: was a certain time where West Coast was more about
- 12:14Speaker 2: you know, funk and stuff like that. And you know,
- 12:17Speaker 2: sure there was a rapper too, And I'm not talking
- 12:20Speaker 2: about those that emerged like Iced Tea and all of that.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I'm talking about prior to that Iced t NWA, the
- 12:28Speaker 2: West Coast wasn't known to be on something like some
- 12:31Speaker 2: hip hop stuff that started on the East and it
- 12:34Speaker 2: spread everywhere, but every place has their own version of
- 12:38Speaker 2: it that is unique to them, that they own. Hip
- 12:41Speaker 2: Hop isn't only New York's, just like it's not only
- 12:45Speaker 2: belonging to the US. So to say another place has
- 12:50Speaker 2: the better rappers when the Foundations still live and kicking
- 12:54Speaker 2: West Coast, South New York, Philly, wherever we're talking about,
- 12:59Speaker 2: I need to see them receipts, okay, because that ain't true.
- 13:03Speaker 1: It's just not.
- 13:05Speaker 2: And we don't need this fool to start things. Now,
- 13:08Speaker 2: there was a little feels like It battle that's trying
- 13:15Speaker 2: to jump up and become a thing. After the Joey
- 13:19Speaker 2: Badass versus Everybody, Kendrick and Drake, now there are a
- 13:24Speaker 2: couple of UK rappers who trying to step out there
- 13:26Speaker 2: and challenge people and skeptic challenged join the lucas both
- 13:35Speaker 2: disc tracks were made, Please don't make anymore. And then
- 13:39Speaker 2: some other dudes this in Eminem. I think Eminem is
- 13:42Speaker 2: going to clearly ignore this cap I don't want to
- 13:44Speaker 2: see US versus UK.
- 13:48Speaker 1: I don't care. I don't want to see.
- 13:49Speaker 2: It because guess what we got more bullets in the
- 13:51Speaker 2: chamber than they do right join the Lucas is whatever.
- 13:57Speaker 1: We got too many people to throw direction. You will
- 14:02Speaker 1: be overwhelmed.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Shout out to my people from UK, but some of
- 14:08Speaker 2: them don't even rock with some of this music coming
- 14:11Speaker 2: out of there, so it's just a non starter. And
- 14:14Speaker 2: look who started it, Drake. Let's not feed him all right,
- 14:19Speaker 2: Next story. So the next release in this rollout from
- 14:27Speaker 2: Massive Hill, remember seven albums from seven Icons. The first
- 14:32Speaker 2: album to be released was from the icon the Legend
- 14:36Speaker 2: Slick Rick, an album that I reviewed on this podcast
- 14:41Speaker 2: and didn't necessarily like that much. I didn't think excuse me,
- 14:45Speaker 2: I didn't think it was whack. I just felt like
- 14:49Speaker 2: it left a lot to be desired, considering the length
- 14:53Speaker 2: of the album, the length of some songs that were good,
- 14:59Speaker 2: having hel Records, two House records on there, and I
- 15:02Speaker 2: understood the story the connection with this album to the
- 15:08Speaker 2: UK and that inform and it yourselver and that informed
- 15:13Speaker 2: some of the choices, but it just didn't leave a
- 15:18Speaker 2: good taste in my mouth for a fan of Slick Wreck.
- 15:20Speaker 2: It was just kind of like lackluster for me. If
- 15:25Speaker 2: you dig it, that's cool, but I there was just
- 15:28Speaker 2: too many skips for me. You know, the songs that
- 15:30Speaker 2: I love, I really love, it just didn't happen enough
- 15:34Speaker 2: on that album. So now here we are in the
- 15:37Speaker 2: second release from Mass Appeal from another icon and legend,
- 15:40Speaker 2: Ray Kwon, with a brand new album called The Emperor's
- 15:44Speaker 2: New Clothes. Leave it up to either Ray or Ghost
- 15:49Speaker 2: just to have the Empress New Ghost.
- 15:51Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying.
- 15:52Speaker 2: It's like flip it like marble cake, right, Like I
- 15:55Speaker 2: just love the way they just make things sound so
- 15:58Speaker 2: bigger than they probably actually are. This album's just dropped.
- 16:05Speaker 2: If you don't know. My review scale is three listens.
- 16:11Speaker 2: I just do it because it just works right. First listen,
- 16:14Speaker 2: I'm just impressions. Second listen, now I'm listening a little
- 16:19Speaker 2: closer to the lyrics, to the music, how everything ties together.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And my third listen is just to confirm my thoughts
- 16:26Speaker 2: and my thoughts just for those who need a quick answer,
- 16:30Speaker 2: is it's cool.
- 16:32Speaker 1: It's a cool album.
- 16:34Speaker 2: So the album has seventeen songs, probably three skits in there, right,
- 16:39Speaker 2: clocks in under an hour at forty minutes. You know
- 16:42Speaker 2: that's my kind of album, right, I don't have a
- 16:45Speaker 2: lot of time to spend with you, you know, unless I
- 16:47Speaker 2: really really like it. So many notable features from Griselda
- 16:53Speaker 2: to Inspected Deck, Carlton Fisk. I don't think I know
- 16:57Speaker 2: that is that's no shade. I just the name sounds familiar,
- 17:01Speaker 2: just didn't ring a bell. As far as music, Ghost.
- 17:05Speaker 1: Face and.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Method Man's on here, NASA's on here, Marsha and Brosia.
- 17:12Speaker 2: And when I was listening to this album, I was
- 17:16Speaker 2: thinking about a ranking of Ray Kwon's album that I
- 17:20Speaker 2: did almost a year ago. If not a year ago,
- 17:23Speaker 2: I'll leave the link or card, or there'll be a
- 17:26Speaker 2: link at the end of the episode, but there'll also
- 17:27Speaker 2: be a card that pops up.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Or should have popped up.
- 17:31Speaker 2: You should have already seen it in the beginning of
- 17:33Speaker 2: the show. But I was thinking about like Ray Kwon's catalog,
- 17:39Speaker 2: and I went back and watched my own video to
- 17:42Speaker 2: kind of get an idea of or refresh my memory
- 17:47Speaker 2: on his catalog, And for the most part, it was
- 17:50Speaker 2: what I thought. Most people think the only good albums
- 17:55Speaker 2: in Ray Kwon's catalog are only built for cuber links
- 17:59Speaker 2: and only bill for cuber links too, which is absolutely
- 18:04Speaker 2: not true. The majority of his catalog is good, too great,
- 18:10Speaker 2: and the Classic you know what I'm saying, There's really
- 18:13Speaker 2: only one album that's like Whack, which you know which
- 18:17Speaker 2: one it is, and Mobilarity, and then there's one that's okay,
- 18:23Speaker 2: but then the rest are mostly good.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I feel like this is a good album. The vibe is.
- 18:32Speaker 2: A legend like retired, you know, relaxing, enjoying life, you know,
- 18:37Speaker 2: sitting back and reflecting on not only his life but
- 18:42Speaker 2: his career, and that comes across in a number of
- 18:45Speaker 2: songs and in a lot of ways. Those tend to
- 18:48Speaker 2: be my favorite on this album because of who ray
- 18:52Speaker 2: Kuon is and what he's accomplished in his career and
- 18:56Speaker 2: in me as a fan looking at him at this stage,
- 18:59Speaker 2: you know what it's like.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It's like.
- 19:03Speaker 2: Nas and Hip Boys Magic three, right when Nas turned
- 19:08Speaker 2: fifty and this album dropped. It was almost like a
- 19:11Speaker 2: boss celebrating his career and success and acknowledging this run
- 19:18Speaker 2: he's been on. And that was one of the main
- 19:21Speaker 2: reasons why I liked Magic three, because it made it
- 19:24Speaker 2: different from everything else he had released.
- 19:26Speaker 1: And most rappers, you know, they'll.
- 19:28Speaker 2: Make mention of how long they've been in the game
- 19:31Speaker 2: and what they've done, but to have an album kind
- 19:36Speaker 2: of crafted with that in mind, that's the context you
- 19:40Speaker 2: need going in. So if you're looking for Cuba Link
- 19:43Speaker 2: Part three, it's not necessarily it.
- 19:45Speaker 1: But if you've liked even his last.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Project before this, called The Wild, it's a lot more
- 19:53Speaker 2: like that and the other projects like Shylin versus Woo
- 19:57Speaker 2: and stuff like that, where he's he's you know, he's
- 20:02Speaker 2: just making records, you know, like Yo, I still love
- 20:05Speaker 2: hip hop, I'm still making records and this and that. Now,
- 20:09Speaker 2: there are a few things as far as the features
- 20:12Speaker 2: that I thought would stand out versus those that I
- 20:16Speaker 2: really didn't have any anticiy anticipation for, but they wind
- 20:20Speaker 2: up being the standouts.
- 20:22Speaker 1: The thing.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Let me start with the bad news, right, and not
- 20:25Speaker 2: super bad. It's not super bad. It's just a.
- 20:28Speaker 1: Pet peeve kind of bad. Rapec not rapecor. Ghost faces
- 20:33Speaker 1: on this album three times.
- 20:35Speaker 2: That got me hype because I mean, it's Ray, So
- 20:38Speaker 2: anytime it's Ray, we need ghosts on at least three tracks.
- 20:42Speaker 1: Anytime it's Ghosts, we need Ray to show up for
- 20:45Speaker 1: a couple of tracks. Also, it's just they internally linked.
- 20:50Speaker 1: They're like the best unofficial group or duo one of
- 20:55Speaker 1: the best of all time. But the older Ghosts is
- 21:02Speaker 1: not whack at all.
- 21:04Speaker 2: And I'm not saying his appearances are whack, but there's
- 21:08Speaker 2: something lost in the nostalgia when his voice sounds completely
- 21:12Speaker 2: different from what we remember. He's more gruff. He almost
- 21:21Speaker 2: sounds like he like when I see him. He doesn't
- 21:24Speaker 2: look like he gained a lot of weight or anything crazy,
- 21:27Speaker 2: but he kind of sounds like that. He sounds like
- 21:30Speaker 2: husky almost. You know, you know how Big has that
- 21:33Speaker 2: big pun. They had that hussy kind of gravelly, not gravelly,
- 21:38Speaker 2: but maybe raspy in some ways, but you could tell
- 21:42Speaker 2: it was their weight for the most part, like Sean P.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Like as Sean P got bigger, he sounded a certain way.
- 21:48Speaker 2: But it kind of worked for Sean Pe because it
- 21:50Speaker 2: wasn't that different from his voice when he debuted with
- 21:55Speaker 2: bou Can Play. But with Ghosts, it's noticeable, and you
- 22:01Speaker 2: know it's Ghosts and he's saying all the things he
- 22:04Speaker 2: usually say. He's rhyming the way he usually rhymes, so
- 22:07Speaker 2: it's still Ghosts. But there's something left to be desired
- 22:12Speaker 2: when it ain't Shonder.
- 22:14Speaker 1: In the crib with the glass on the table. That's Ghosts.
- 22:19Speaker 1: That's the ghost we like. It's the same thing.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Like if West Side Guns voice changed and it was
- 22:25Speaker 2: a little bit more husky and gravelly. That ain't like
- 22:29Speaker 2: I'm sitting at the computer like, it's not the same.
- 22:34Speaker 2: He could say the same things, but it's not the same.
- 22:37Speaker 2: But that's just nitpicking. I think his performance overall was decent.
- 22:43Speaker 2: I really like his performance on the last track called
- 22:47Speaker 2: Mac and Lobster.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Of course that's what it was called Mac and Lobster.
- 22:51Speaker 2: It's ghostly, right, you know, So I can't take points
- 22:54Speaker 2: off because Ghosts is just getting older. That's foul, you
- 22:57Speaker 2: know what I'm saying, because that's what I assume it is.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I assume he can't really do that high pitched voice
- 23:03Speaker 2: because he would probably have to fake it because this
- 23:07Speaker 2: is where his voice is at his age right now.
- 23:10Speaker 2: So it is what it is. But nevertheless, like I said,
- 23:14Speaker 2: performance was dope, meth came through. I didn't necessarily like
- 23:19Speaker 2: the beat that they were on, so I think it
- 23:22Speaker 2: took away from all of their performances in some way.
- 23:26Speaker 2: But still not a Wax song. The Griselda joint. I
- 23:32Speaker 2: need a Griselda. I need to not hear them separately,
- 23:37Speaker 2: like can we get another mixtape album? Conway, Benny Benny
- 23:43Speaker 2: and Westside Gunn because on this song it made me
- 23:47Speaker 2: miss that combination of those three having a verse and
- 23:51Speaker 2: ray Kun fit right in with them. It's one of
- 23:54Speaker 2: the standouts for me personally. But one of the things
- 23:57Speaker 2: that people are walking away with now is got Busy.
- 24:00Speaker 2: On this album, he got busy. The song is what
- 24:05Speaker 2: is it? Amerto Amerta, The Amerta.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Ray Kwon did his thing, but this is kind of like.
- 24:15Speaker 2: If you watch my review of the Clips, I like
- 24:17Speaker 2: NAS's verse on the Clips album, but I felt like,
- 24:22Speaker 2: flow wise, he was doing a particular flow that felt
- 24:25Speaker 2: like he was trying to fit in instead of just
- 24:28Speaker 2: doing NOAs he doing Nas on this jount Like how
- 24:32Speaker 2: I was saying in that other review, like yeah, sometimes
- 24:34Speaker 2: I just want chittooth Nas kind of getting that on
- 24:38Speaker 2: this album, and it's a standout record for sure. There's
- 24:44Speaker 2: a couple of skits on here, but they're a typical
- 24:47Speaker 2: random Ray Kwan. You know, let's do a skit about
- 24:50Speaker 2: this because some of it, I was like, maybe maybe
- 24:54Speaker 2: I didn't get it. Maybe the songs lined up in
- 24:56Speaker 2: a way for some of these skits, but like he
- 24:58Speaker 2: got a skit call barbershop bullies and it's just random.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Ray Kwon's just talking, right yo, stop moving your head.
- 25:07Speaker 2: That's I guess he's a barber. Right then if somebody
- 25:10Speaker 2: else screamed something in the back, like it just was random,
- 25:14Speaker 2: right then he had another joint officer full beard, which
- 25:20Speaker 2: was funny. But it's Ray Kuon getting pulled over and
- 25:24Speaker 2: all of that, and you know he a boss. So like,
- 25:27Speaker 2: if you are familiar with Wu Tang and especially Ray
- 25:30Speaker 2: Kwan and his music and his history of skits and songs,
- 25:36Speaker 2: all of this stuff makes sense. They don't really have
- 25:38Speaker 2: to tie into records. It's just it's a Rakon album,
- 25:42Speaker 2: Like what do you want?
- 25:43Speaker 1: What do you want? You know what I'm saying.
- 25:46Speaker 2: But again, I think listening to this album, if you
- 25:52Speaker 2: like ray Kon and you're not only looking for Cuban Links,
- 25:56Speaker 2: Purple tape, you know records or Rizard of be on
- 26:00Speaker 2: the boards, which he hasn't been in decades at this point,
- 26:04Speaker 2: and you understand that there've been good albums from Ray
- 26:08Speaker 2: Kwon and Goes for that matter, without Rizon on the boards,
- 26:12Speaker 2: then I think you would like this album because it's
- 26:15Speaker 2: a good album top five.
- 26:17Speaker 1: For me this year. Not really, but that's not the
- 26:21Speaker 1: same thing bad about it.
- 26:23Speaker 2: That's just saying the songs that are the albums right
- 26:26Speaker 2: now that I hold in the top five of the
- 26:30Speaker 2: year so far, I just don't think this album is
- 26:34Speaker 2: better than those, but I think it's good enough to
- 26:37Speaker 2: be mentioned as one of the best of the years.
- 26:39Speaker 2: So to me, Mass Appeals rollout of seven albums and
- 26:44Speaker 2: seven legends.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Is one in one.
- 26:48Speaker 2: The word on the street is that next up will
- 26:52Speaker 2: be ghost Face with Supreme Clientele two. At least that's
- 26:57Speaker 2: the rumor. So we'll see. But consider and what I
- 27:00Speaker 2: just said about Ghosts and my feelings. If it ain't
- 27:03Speaker 2: showing in.
- 27:04Speaker 1: The glasshouse throwing on the rocks.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Like I can't take the gruff version, man, it's not
- 27:10Speaker 2: gonna sound the same, especially being a sequel to his
- 27:15Speaker 2: best album and one of the best albums.
- 27:17Speaker 1: In hip hop history, Supreme Clientele. But we'll see.
- 27:22Speaker 2: What do you think about Ray Kon's brand new album,
- 27:24Speaker 2: The Emperor's New Clothes.
- 27:26Speaker 1: The features Ray, the Beats, the Skits.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Leave your comments in a comment section below, and lastly,
- 27:36Speaker 2: so we're gonna try to be as quick as possible
- 27:40Speaker 2: with this one, but an interesting thing popped up in
- 27:44Speaker 2: my timeline. Also wound up being in a group chat
- 27:48Speaker 2: I'm in on WhatsApp shout out to them, and it
- 27:52Speaker 2: compelled me considering. I saw it on social media, and
- 27:55Speaker 2: I saw the conversation around it, and then it becomes
- 27:59Speaker 2: a conversation in a private chat. I felt like, well,
- 28:05Speaker 2: that kind of says maybe I should address it. So
- 28:09Speaker 2: this is stemming from a tweet from and shout out
- 28:14Speaker 2: to Mickey Facts, who basically was reacting to a video
- 28:20Speaker 2: of the rapper Mirrors talking about kind of breaking down
- 28:27Speaker 2: hip hop and how we perceive writers MC's collaborating on
- 28:35Speaker 2: the record and how some people view that as whack
- 28:39Speaker 2: or ghostwriting and question them sees as to or basically
- 28:45Speaker 2: question a pen game, like if you wrap, you should
- 28:48Speaker 2: be able to do that by yourself, You should be
- 28:51Speaker 2: able to write that by yourself. You shouldn't need help.
- 28:57Speaker 2: And even though I'm not gonna play, Mickey Facts thoughts
- 29:00Speaker 2: on it. To sum up his thoughts, he believes co
- 29:04Speaker 2: writing is fine if you're going to try to make
- 29:08Speaker 2: a hit or you're trying to do a song outside
- 29:12Speaker 2: of what you typically do that has a goal of
- 29:17Speaker 2: radio play or or you know, popular success. But he
- 29:21Speaker 2: does feel like if you're an MC, anything like that
- 29:25Speaker 2: album cuts freestyles in a cipher that should come from
- 29:31Speaker 2: your opinion. So we're gonna play MRS talking about it,
- 29:37Speaker 2: and then I'll just give you my thoughts on what
- 29:39Speaker 2: he has to say.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I had a ghostwriter on my newest single, games Shame.
- 29:45Speaker 2: I don't understand why the only genre to criticize vocalists
- 29:51Speaker 2: for not being the authors of their material. Single from
- 29:55Speaker 2: a kind of name, bang saw that I was mentoring
- 29:58Speaker 2: and working with.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yeah, so I said in the songs like I don't
- 30:02Speaker 1: like my second verse, see what you could do? He
- 30:04Speaker 1: shot me back something else phenomenal. I took what I
- 30:07Speaker 1: needed and I'm giving him now. I really feel like
- 30:12Speaker 1: you needs to create a safe space for the writer. Okay.
- 30:17Speaker 2: So so that was that was MURVS speaking from his
- 30:23Speaker 2: point of view about the subject, but also giving a
- 30:27Speaker 2: live example of himself now me personally as a hip
- 30:30Speaker 2: hop fan and as a guy who's dug a couple
- 30:34Speaker 2: of MURRS projects and really gave him a lot of
- 30:39Speaker 2: respect off his pen.
- 30:41Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:41Speaker 2: That's because there are artists who can make a catchy record,
- 30:45Speaker 2: and you like him for all the things in the record,
- 30:48Speaker 2: and then they are artists who make catchy records and
- 30:52Speaker 2: you you, you're more focused on the writing, so you're like, Yo,
- 30:56Speaker 2: this dude is dope, you know, coming up with these
- 30:59Speaker 2: ideas and the way he flipped that and a way
- 31:01Speaker 2: he said this. But I have to say, and maybe
- 31:09Speaker 2: this is the old school academy. I'm sorry, Maybe this
- 31:11Speaker 2: is the unk or whoever you whatever you want to say,
- 31:14Speaker 2: maybe it's the old head. But that coming from Murs
- 31:21Speaker 2: makes me feel more like you could have wrote that.
- 31:27Speaker 2: You could have wrote that you are capable of writing that.
- 31:30Speaker 2: You could have wrote that I and I think, like
- 31:32Speaker 2: even him laying out the fact that my new single
- 31:36Speaker 2: I was working on it, I really didn't like my
- 31:38Speaker 2: second verse. I gave it to a mentee and say,
- 31:42Speaker 2: let me see what you do with it. He gives
- 31:45Speaker 2: you some great ideas. You pulled from those great ideas,
- 31:48Speaker 2: and maybe you pulling lines as well from those ideas
- 31:51Speaker 2: to finish the song, and you properly so give him
- 31:56Speaker 2: co writer.
- 31:59Speaker 1: And credit.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Even in this conversation. Sure, I can agree with that,
- 32:07Speaker 2: but considering merge to me is not what you would
- 32:11Speaker 2: call someone who's aiming to be on the radio, who
- 32:14Speaker 2: is popular outside of the cats that do know him,
- 32:19Speaker 2: the fans that do know him.
- 32:21Speaker 1: I think he's more of.
- 32:22Speaker 2: A core fan based type rapper, where it's like he
- 32:25Speaker 2: got his core, that's it. And I don't know if
- 32:29Speaker 2: his core would agree with him, because at least the
- 32:33Speaker 2: notion is if somebody said, do you think Merz has
- 32:38Speaker 2: a ghostwriter or co writers? It'll be a quick note
- 32:42Speaker 2: on both if the man didn't just tell you on
- 32:46Speaker 2: this single, I had a co writer. So I think
- 32:52Speaker 2: it's two things right as an MC, as a guy
- 32:55Speaker 2: who came up in the nineties, where you know, writing
- 32:58Speaker 2: your own stuff was pasted, you had to everybody assumed
- 33:03Speaker 2: that was your pin when you spit your wraps, and
- 33:06Speaker 2: it better be. I never would have sought a co writer.
- 33:11Speaker 2: But as a professional recording artist, even if you're independent,
- 33:18Speaker 2: your role is not only to make great music, but
- 33:21Speaker 2: it is to make music that hopefully becomes popular and
- 33:24Speaker 2: puts money in your pocket.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Doesn't matter what you do.
- 33:28Speaker 2: An independent business not giving away stuff for free, even
- 33:30Speaker 2: though you would like to think.
- 33:31Speaker 1: That, it's just not so.
- 33:34Speaker 2: The same goals for being on a major so maybe
- 33:37Speaker 2: he wanted to make something that was better than what
- 33:41Speaker 2: he was thinking, and he just needed some ideas and help.
- 33:45Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything wrong with that, because as
- 33:48Speaker 2: an MC writer's block exist sometimes you don't have the
- 33:52Speaker 2: time to sit. Some people get right his block and
- 33:55Speaker 2: it ain't just Oh, it took me a couple of weeks, but.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Then I got it.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Some people may have right this block on one record, and
- 34:02Speaker 2: that will hold the entire album up because they can't
- 34:05Speaker 2: finish the album until they get past that. And sometimes
- 34:09Speaker 2: you need someone else's ears to hear what you can hear,
- 34:15Speaker 2: to see what you can't see right, to say, oh, well,
- 34:20Speaker 2: why don't you do this? It's in hip hop. Unfortunately,
- 34:25Speaker 2: people frown upon even that even that much because they
- 34:29Speaker 2: feel like you're creative, you should come up with it.
- 34:33Speaker 2: But after you reach a certain point, especially when you're
- 34:36Speaker 2: in the business of creating for profit, you can't really
- 34:41Speaker 2: take those chances right because so many things can go wrong.
- 34:45Speaker 2: So tapping somebody for the sake of getting the idea
- 34:51Speaker 2: fleshed out or revigorating what you kind of initially thought
- 34:56Speaker 2: but couldn't get out your system. Sometimes somebody can just say, oh,
- 35:00Speaker 2: I listened, maybe you should do this if you said
- 35:04Speaker 2: something like this, They didn't write the whole song for you.
- 35:09Speaker 2: They co wrote, they helped, and it doesn't mean they
- 35:12Speaker 2: helped write the entire album. Doesn't mean they ghosts or
- 35:15Speaker 2: ghost writing the whole album. But I said all that
- 35:20Speaker 2: to say that I think that rule of you know
- 35:23Speaker 2: yo not having ghostwriters, it just kind of applies to
- 35:27Speaker 2: me to anybody who's really gonna talk ish about their pin.
- 35:32Speaker 2: You can't have ghostwriters if you're talking about your pen being.
- 35:35Speaker 1: Great, you can't do that.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Now you trying to make a hit record, and this
- 35:43Speaker 2: guy has been releasing music but can't get off.
- 35:45Speaker 1: But he's a great writer.
- 35:46Speaker 2: In your mind, it's okay to collaborate, to fine tune
- 35:50Speaker 2: your ideas. Right, not to say go write my whole
- 35:53Speaker 2: album and not come and recite it, but to say,
- 35:57Speaker 2: you know, let's creatives come together. And it's not uncommon
- 36:02Speaker 2: in hip hop. It's not a new thing. When the
- 36:04Speaker 2: rules existed, ghostwriters were writing in the background. That's why
- 36:08Speaker 2: they were ghostwriters because it was hip hop, and people
- 36:11Speaker 2: were like, don't tell anybody, tell anybody that such and
- 36:18Speaker 2: such help because hip hop not trying to hear that,
- 36:22Speaker 2: so his plea to move on. I feel it when
- 36:27Speaker 2: it comes to having co writers, nobody should look at
- 36:31Speaker 2: a co writer as a ghostwriter, or take any points
- 36:34Speaker 2: away from an artist who's probably written so many rhymes
- 36:38Speaker 2: in his lifetime that having a co writer on a song.
- 36:42Speaker 2: When this man is like fifty or whatever, it's okay
- 36:46Speaker 2: for him to have a co writer.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Ghostwriting is something else. Again.
- 36:52Speaker 2: I would like to think those who are dope and
- 36:55Speaker 2: known for their pen can even write hits themselves. But
- 37:01Speaker 2: if you have somebody go and write it all and
- 37:03Speaker 2: you just recite and like Merg said, vocalists, well, vocalists
- 37:09Speaker 2: in MC no, no, no, let's not do that.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Let's not marry those two. Right. It's either your pin
- 37:16Speaker 1: or you just or maybe you are just a vocalist.
- 37:20Speaker 2: But being a vocalist sometime and a dude who can
- 37:23Speaker 2: write it other times, it just seems weird. But again,
- 37:26Speaker 2: I don't make music for a living, and in the
- 37:31Speaker 2: record industry outside of hip hop, this is commonplace. So
- 37:37Speaker 2: is it time for hip hop to join the party?
- 37:41Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Let me know what you think in the comment section.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Do you think co writing is a form of ghost writing.
- 37:49Speaker 2: Do you agree with Mert said, like you need to
- 37:53Speaker 2: get out of that. You know, artists working together means
- 37:57Speaker 2: your pen isn't as great as we thought. Because you
- 37:59Speaker 2: need help. Leave your comments section wherever you can. On
- 38:04Speaker 2: YouTube that's right below the video that's gonna do for me.
