- 0:00Speaker 1: Coach Shorium is about to open a bottle of champagne.
- 0:02Speaker 1: The Brewers won the World Series. What do you think
- 0:04Speaker 1: of that? The Brewers won the World Series.
- 0:06Speaker 2: It's called Vapo Lechella.
- 0:09Speaker 3: Okay. My mother gave me a bottle of it when
- 0:10Speaker 3: I went to the prom. She figured at least she
- 0:15Speaker 3: knew what I would be drinking.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Right. We're previewing the season for the Huskies. It's hard
- 0:22Speaker 1: to believe that KK Arnold and Ashlyn Shade are now seniors.
- 0:26Speaker 1: They played over 100 games in their career. KK is
- 0:29Speaker 1: your point guard coming off a marvelous season. She's had
- 0:31Speaker 1: 35 career five assist games, three and a half assists
- 0:35Speaker 1: for her career per game. And then you've got Ash,
- 0:38Speaker 1: who's had quite a road. She did everything for.
- 0:42Speaker 2: You last season.
- 0:43Speaker 1: And these are two seniors that have seen a lot
- 0:46Speaker 1: in their time at UConn. Injuries, starting, coming off the bench.
- 0:51Speaker 1: They've had just about every role here. What are your
- 0:53Speaker 1: expectations for these two young ladies this year to lead
- 0:56Speaker 1: this team?
- 0:57Speaker 3: I don't know that they're much different expectations than they
- 1:04Speaker 3: have been. I think when you've played as many games
- 1:12Speaker 3: as they've played, I think their own expectations is that
- 1:18Speaker 3: this is going to be their best year. They have
- 1:24Speaker 3: had starting roles when they started. as freshmen, they came
- 1:28Speaker 3: off the bench as sophomores. They were in the starting
- 1:31Speaker 3: lineup as, as juniors. Um, so they've seen it all
- 1:36Speaker 3: and they've done it all. And they play when we
- 1:39Speaker 3: only had six players or seven players, something like that. Um,
- 1:44Speaker 3: so I, I think they're, they're going to be, you know,
- 1:48Speaker 3: what we need them to be, what that is and
- 1:51Speaker 3: what that means in like points and rebounds, assists and
- 1:54Speaker 3: three pointers.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I don't know. But, um, you're going to rely on
- 1:58Speaker 2: them a lot.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Um, again, because they, they've played so much basketball and, uh,
- 2:05Speaker 3: and they both compete, you know, so hard and, um,
- 2:10Speaker 3: they're both very passionate about the game. So I would,
- 2:13Speaker 3: I would think we would lean on them quite a bit, um,
- 2:18Speaker 3: to kind of bring the energy every day, which, you know,
- 2:23Speaker 3: obviously is infectious.
- 2:24Speaker 2: So, um, That's the beginning point for both of them.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Gina, where have you seen KK improve offensively?
- 2:35Speaker 3: She's shooting it better. These practices that we've had, she's
- 2:42Speaker 3: more comfortable now shooting the ball, even more so than
- 2:48Speaker 3: last year where I think she shot it the best
- 2:51Speaker 3: since she's been here. And that's, you know, a result
- 2:58Speaker 3: of her putting a lot of time in during the summer.
- 3:01Speaker 3: I think she's also more under control of the offense,
- 3:14Speaker 3: what we're doing. So I expect there to be a
- 3:20Speaker 3: little bit smoother a lot of times. She would come
- 3:25Speaker 3: down and Find AZ.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Find AZ. Find AZ. And I think this year it's
- 3:31Speaker 2: going to have to be a little bit different.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, there were times last season there wasn't flow in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the offense that you would have liked from the conversations
- 3:39Speaker 1: that we had either pregame or on the coaches' show.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Do you see a little more of that, a better
- 3:44Speaker 1: look at that so far? I know it's early, but
- 3:48Speaker 1: do you see some improvement in that?
- 3:50Speaker 2: In which part?
- 3:51Speaker 1: In the flow of the offense, in the half-court offense,
- 3:53Speaker 1: because you scored a lot of points last year. off
- 3:55Speaker 1: turnovers and in transition last season.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah, we did. We did. And that's how you have
- 4:02Speaker 2: to score.
- 4:04Speaker 3: You have to get out and you have to be
- 4:07Speaker 3: able to get into your offense before the other team
- 4:11Speaker 3: sets up. It's hard to bring the ball up the
- 4:15Speaker 3: floor and try to beat a defense that's already set
- 4:19Speaker 3: there for you. What teams have been doing, They've stopped
- 4:24Speaker 3: trying offensive rebound against us, and they just run back
- 4:26Speaker 3: on defense after they shoot.
- 4:30Speaker 2: So I think our transition game will be pretty good.
- 4:37Speaker 3: You know, AZ could break the game open with, you know,
- 4:41Speaker 3: two or three threes right in a row. But, you know,
- 4:46Speaker 3: we'll find somebody that will be able to do that.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And we have to play fast. We have to play fast.
- 4:55Speaker 2: But we'll be a little bit bigger, you know, I think.
- 4:59Speaker 2: We'll be a little bit bigger.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Blanca will play more minutes. So we'll be a different,
- 5:05Speaker 3: our team will look different.
- 5:07Speaker 1: How's Blanca doing in her rehab?
- 5:09Speaker 2: Good, good.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Every day she's doing more and more. Today she did
- 5:18Speaker 3: a little more, and I could tell that she was
- 5:20Speaker 3: back to getting close to back to normal.
- 5:24Speaker 2: She threw the ball all over the place.
- 5:27Speaker 3: Missed almost every shot she took. And looked at me like,
- 5:32Speaker 3: what's your problem? You should just be happy I'm practicing.
- 5:39Speaker 2: That's a start.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Well, you've got the National Player of the Year back
- 5:43Speaker 1: in Sarah Strong.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Numbers speak for themselves.
- 5:46Speaker 1: What about the leadership? It seems like she's more vocal
- 5:48Speaker 1: and more assertive of herself.
- 5:51Speaker 2: Yeah. I think there's this perception.
- 5:54Speaker 3: that because you're a senior, you're supposed to be a
- 5:57Speaker 3: team leader, which is, you know, understandable. But a lot
- 6:04Speaker 3: of times, you know, your best player ends up most
- 6:10Speaker 3: of the time, not all the time, your best player ends.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Up having.
- 6:15Speaker 3: The biggest voice because if they say something, everybody listens. Now,
- 6:20Speaker 3: if your best player is very quiet and doesn't say much,
- 6:23Speaker 3: That's a different issue. But the only reason Sarah was
- 6:29Speaker 3: quiet her first two years is because we had Paige, AZ,
- 6:33Speaker 3: and she.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Felt like it's not my turn yet.
- 6:38Speaker 3: But this year in practice, her voice is the loudest,
- 6:41Speaker 3: and she's adamant about some of the things that she
- 6:46Speaker 3: wants out there, and she's very specific. Some players on
- 6:51Speaker 3: your team, When they don't like something, they go, let's
- 6:54Speaker 3: go blue. We have to rebound blue. I'm like, who's
- 6:58Speaker 3: players named blue on our team? They don't want to
- 7:01Speaker 3: point anybody out. They don't want to go, hey, you
- 7:04Speaker 3: got to rebound. Players don't do that anymore. But I'm
- 7:09Speaker 3: teaching her how to do that.
- 7:11Speaker 1: From a leadership standpoint, is she, I mean, she's got
- 7:14Speaker 1: to be vastly different from what you've seen from, or
- 7:17Speaker 1: maybe I should redo the question. Does she compare to
- 7:21Speaker 1: any other past players that you've had from a leadership
- 7:24Speaker 1: standpoint the way she has? Because everybody's different.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yeah, everybody's different. You know, everybody just has to be
- 7:31Speaker 3: true to their personality. And her personality is she's a
- 7:36Speaker 3: fun-loving kid. I mean, she has a great relationship with
- 7:39Speaker 3: all the players on the team. She likes to kid around.
- 7:44Speaker 3: She loves being around her teammates. But when she gets...
- 7:49Speaker 3: When she gets upset at something, it's very, very, very noticeable.
- 7:54Speaker 3: And she's doing more. So we have a really hard schedule,
- 8:02Speaker 3: but we have the best player. So anytime you have
- 8:06Speaker 3: the best player, you have a pretty good chance of winning.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Yeah, for instance, a week from tonight, we'll be at Michigan.
- 8:13Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 8:14Speaker 3: Yeah, a week from tonight we'll be at Michigan. They're like, what,
- 8:16Speaker 3: fifth in.
- 8:17Speaker 2: The conference or something? Yeah, it's a doozy.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It's a doozy of a non-conference.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:21Speaker 1: All before Christmas.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And then we come back and we have who, Iowa? Iowa.
- 8:25Speaker 2: What are they?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Ten preseason AP. We'll stop there for now. We'll talk
- 8:32Speaker 1: about that schedule later. It doesn't get any easier after
- 8:36Speaker 1: Monday night. Ohio State, Louisville, and then Thanksgiving week.
- 8:40Speaker 2: What's Ohio State?
- 8:41Speaker 1: 18, Louisville, 7.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Then he gets Seton Hall open, and then Thanksgiving week,
- 8:49Speaker 1: it's only South Carolina and Duke. Piece of cake.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Piece of cake. Wow. Yeah.
- 8:57Speaker 1: We'll take a break, come back with more. We'll get
- 8:59Speaker 1: more involved in the post players as you're listening to
- 9:01Speaker 1: the UConn Women's Basketball Coaches Show. Yes, take a drink, Gino,
- 9:05Speaker 1: here on Learfield.
