- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's get into it with Jeff Lagwald. We're
- 0:01Speaker 1: out here at the Old Town Tavern in r Vada,
- 0:04Speaker 1: five thirty pre game six o'clock puck drop tonight.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yes, sorry, LEVI wants to nominate Mark Johnson for best
- 0:11Speaker 2: burger in Denver. Get him out, But we don't know burger.
- 0:16Speaker 2: We're not sure Mark Johnson. I don't know if Jeff
- 0:19Speaker 2: makes a good burger.
- 0:21Speaker 1: How could he not find midwestern fellow? Uh? Jeff Legwald
- 0:25Speaker 1: is with us here on a beautiful Monday afternoon. We're
- 0:29Speaker 1: having an audio an audio issue.
- 0:31Speaker 2: But I wanted to ask Jeff if he's got grill skills.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Grill skill.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Now he's a Midwestern I think you guys come equip
- 0:37Speaker 2: with that at birth, don't you.
- 0:39Speaker 1: It's it's a part of the requirement.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yes, But I also know he doesn't eat a lot
- 0:42Speaker 2: of red meat, so I don't know.
- 0:45Speaker 1: I don't know. I mean, you can, you can have
- 0:48Speaker 1: the skills and yet you can serve two others.
- 0:53Speaker 2: It's it's in the DNA R right. I think we're good, Jeff,
- 0:56Speaker 2: you have grill skills. If I wanted a burger, could
- 0:58Speaker 2: you whip me up a good one?
- 1:00Speaker 3: Her Yeah, I can play in any stadium. Andy, I'm ready.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Well, well, well, put is about it.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you want to you want to use the briquettes,
- 1:14Speaker 3: you want gas, I'm in you know, whatever you need.
- 1:18Speaker 1: He's got it, man, He's he's versatile. All right, Jeff,
- 1:21Speaker 1: let's uh, let's talk about bo Nix's ankle some more.
- 1:26Speaker 2: Yeah, because we haven't covered it enough.
- 1:28Speaker 1: So what's what's the latest and the greatest ankle surgery
- 1:32Speaker 1: recovery that has ever happened with the follow up expected
- 1:36Speaker 1: until it wasn't and now is back on track. What
- 1:40Speaker 1: is what is actually happening with bow Nicks right now?
- 1:44Speaker 3: Well, you know again, I I uh circled Sewan back
- 1:49Speaker 3: during after after practice Saturday, notice that just to be
- 1:53Speaker 3: clear on where things were.
- 1:55Speaker 2: And I'm sure I was happy you did that.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Yeah, he's always happy when circle it back. But I
- 2:02Speaker 3: think you know, in his mind, you know, he's not
- 2:06Speaker 3: gonna I don't think he'll say this publicly, but I
- 2:10Speaker 3: think he honestly believes if bo Nicks is one hundred
- 2:14Speaker 3: percent ready to go when training camp opens all as well. Yeah,
- 2:18Speaker 3: and that's what they believe in house, very confidently. They think,
- 2:24Speaker 3: you know Unfortunately, like any injured player, bo Nix's off
- 2:29Speaker 3: season will include a lot of staying in Denver, going
- 2:34Speaker 3: to the team complex every day, and rehabbing his injuries.
- 2:38Speaker 3: So he'll be he According to everyone I've spoken to,
- 2:44Speaker 3: he will be one hundred percent ready to go a
- 2:47Speaker 3: couple weeks before camp opens at the end of July.
- 2:52Speaker 3: But they also say, and Sean said this publicly, was
- 2:58Speaker 3: in the mandatory mini camp he could get some limited work.
- 3:01Speaker 3: That's that's that's the last thing of the off season program.
- 3:05Speaker 3: It'll be the third week of June, and that's I
- 3:09Speaker 3: think that's where it stands. But if he does nothing
- 3:12Speaker 3: in OTAs that we see, you know, in team drills
- 3:16Speaker 3: eleven on eleven, you know, if he throws off to
- 3:19Speaker 3: the side, that's a different thing. But if he does
- 3:21Speaker 3: nothing in the team drills, in OTA and mini camp,
- 3:26Speaker 3: they're gonna be unbothered by that because they fully believe
- 3:30Speaker 3: he's ready to go when training camp opens and he's
- 3:34Speaker 3: in year three. They've had no changes to the playbook really,
- 3:40Speaker 3: I mean, Davis Davis Webb is going to be the
- 3:43Speaker 3: play caller. But the the portfolio of information bo Nixon
- 3:48Speaker 3: is dealing with is something he knows already, so I
- 3:52Speaker 3: think that's where it is. You know again, I think
- 3:55Speaker 3: they're still doing a lot of sweeping up after you know,
- 4:00Speaker 3: basically dismissing it during the draft weekend and then it
- 4:04Speaker 3: gets out. I do know behind the scenes, they seem
- 4:08Speaker 3: very upset that the information got out, which is frankly
- 4:13Speaker 3: kind of naive for so many people who've been in
- 4:16Speaker 3: the league for so long.
- 4:18Speaker 2: All Right, you know what I love about talking to
- 4:21Speaker 2: guys like you is you guys can watch these these
- 4:24Speaker 2: rookies do limited work, which it was very limited work
- 4:28Speaker 2: this weekend, and then go to mini camp. But you
- 4:30Speaker 2: can get a feel for who may have an effect.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I remember I stand next to you, Leggy and Javonte Williams.
- 4:36Speaker 2: I'll just pull a name out you go. Do you
- 4:37Speaker 2: know what I remember? Leg you told me two or
- 4:39Speaker 2: three times that kid's got something, that kid's got something.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I'm thinking watching this dude run a little, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 2: a little drill off to the side, and but you
- 4:46Speaker 2: saw something there, so you can pick up on it.
- 4:49Speaker 2: And Javante ended up been a pretty good career there.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Any rookie make you think, all right, that kid's going
- 4:54Speaker 2: to be a factor from what limited stuff you saw
- 4:57Speaker 2: this weekend.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Well, I think the usual you know, suspects, really the
- 5:02Speaker 3: people you would think that I think, I think Jolly
- 5:06Speaker 3: h Jolie. I think it's Jolie now, but justin Jolie
- 5:12Speaker 3: will will have an impact. I think if they're willing
- 5:16Speaker 3: to just play him in the situations where he can
- 5:20Speaker 3: impact the most the earliest, I think he could have
- 5:24Speaker 3: impact quickly. It's very easy to see he is comfortable
- 5:27Speaker 3: in the passing game.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:29Speaker 3: He is unbothered by contact, which is what I look
- 5:33Speaker 3: for when you're evaluating tight ends in the passing game. Uh,
- 5:38Speaker 3: as draft prospects, you look for the people who can
- 5:42Speaker 3: work through that because in the NFL, the level of
- 5:46Speaker 3: contact you get as a receiver is many, many times
- 5:51Speaker 3: more than you've ever experienced it in college. So, uh,
- 5:55Speaker 3: you know Tyler o'needham. You can see the movement skills
- 5:58Speaker 3: and the length. Now those guys until the pads go on,
- 6:02Speaker 3: it's really hard to make a definitive. But you like
- 6:06Speaker 3: the length and his quickness out of his stance. Those
- 6:10Speaker 3: are all things that trend pretty well for a defensive lineman.
- 6:15Speaker 3: And you know, I like Jodah Coleman as a as
- 6:18Speaker 3: a Day two prospect when he was in the draft,
- 6:21Speaker 3: and I like him right now. That's a that's an
- 6:25Speaker 3: NFL body, and he'll pass protect immediately, which trends to
- 6:31Speaker 3: get some third down snaps. If he simply shows he
- 6:36Speaker 3: can hold up doing that in the preseason, which I
- 6:39Speaker 3: think he will. That's a physically strong individual who's ready
- 6:45Speaker 3: to play against NFL players.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Jeff Lakeweld with us Monday afternoon, reacting to Bronco's mini
- 6:52Speaker 1: Cam Kraigman and Lindahl live the Old Town Tavern in Arvada,
- 6:55Speaker 1: Ralston and Wadsworth come out here and watch Game four,
- 7:00Speaker 1: The Wild and the Avalanche right here at the Old
- 7:04Speaker 1: Town Tavern. Listen to it on Altitude Sports Radio ninety
- 7:06Speaker 1: two to five. Jeff, speaking of tight ends, Caleb bl Owner,
- 7:11Speaker 1: seventh round, seventh rounder out of Utah now going into
- 7:15Speaker 1: his second NFL season. From what you have seen and
- 7:20Speaker 1: heard of Caleb Blowner an athlete they like, does he
- 7:25Speaker 1: have any promise to his NFL future?
- 7:28Speaker 3: All right, you know, I'll be honest, and I think
- 7:30Speaker 3: I said it on your guys' show last year. I
- 7:33Speaker 3: thought he could have played red zone snaps last year. Now,
- 7:37Speaker 3: you know again, I always prefaced that with I get
- 7:39Speaker 3: I'm Timmy the sports writer, But that guy, that's a
- 7:44Speaker 3: rare athletic skill set, you know what he has. And
- 7:48Speaker 3: I saw that guy in person play in the NCAA
- 7:52Speaker 3: Basketball Tournament, so I'm very familiar with kind of what
- 7:57Speaker 3: type of athleticism he has. And he's not small. You're
- 8:02Speaker 3: talking about a two hundred and sixty five, two hundred
- 8:06Speaker 3: and sixty seven pound guy, by my eye, and that's
- 8:11Speaker 3: who can you know, the vertical is worthy of a
- 8:17Speaker 3: very good college basketball team, which he played on at
- 8:20Speaker 3: Baylor and BYU and Utah. So all of that is rare,
- 8:27Speaker 3: and I think, you know, there's a small amount of
- 8:31Speaker 3: it is that the bar is so high with the
- 8:34Speaker 3: Broncos to get on the field in terms of what
- 8:38Speaker 3: the coaches want you to know and what they want
- 8:41Speaker 3: you to be proficient at. I think a lot of
- 8:43Speaker 3: teams sort have tossed him in last year, maybe in
- 8:48Speaker 3: some spot duty, but that's not really Sean Payton's mindset.
- 8:53Speaker 3: He wants to be able to especially after last season
- 8:57Speaker 3: when they felt like they had gotten a little predictable
- 9:00Speaker 3: in some situations. They don't want to be where you
- 9:04Speaker 3: can tell what they're up to by their personnel groupings.
- 9:07Speaker 3: So I think they want him to be proficient enough
- 9:11Speaker 3: to get on the field, and I will be surprised
- 9:14Speaker 3: if he does not compete for snaps pretty vigorously in
- 9:18Speaker 3: training camp because he has athleticism. Frankly, a lot of
- 9:23Speaker 3: the other guys don't.
- 9:26Speaker 2: No quarterback signings not a shock. Is Nathan Peterman someone
- 9:30Speaker 2: that gets revisited later if something happens to Ellinger in
- 9:33Speaker 2: this case, or was that just camp arms?
- 9:37Speaker 1: No?
- 9:37Speaker 3: I think you know there's a chance. I mean he
- 9:40Speaker 3: Sean Payton was pretty clear he didn't think they really
- 9:43Speaker 3: needed another arm to get through June work. You know,
- 9:47Speaker 3: he said they might think about it for training camp
- 9:51Speaker 3: if they were in a pup situation physically unable to
- 9:55Speaker 3: perform when camp opened for Bonnicks, and they're not at
- 9:58Speaker 3: this point. If something changed there, maybe in some kind
- 10:02Speaker 3: of timetable switched. But it is funny to me because
- 10:06Speaker 3: you know, Peterman's taking a lot of heat as an
- 10:08Speaker 3: NFL quarterback. But it's a lot like those videos you
- 10:13Speaker 3: see where the twelfth guy on an NBA team walks
- 10:16Speaker 3: in and wins like fifty seven games in a row
- 10:19Speaker 3: with the rec center, you know, against guys who think
- 10:22Speaker 3: they're really good. I mean, Peterman was just he was
- 10:26Speaker 3: so overqualified for what was going on there this weekend.
- 10:30Speaker 3: He he pretty much did whatever he wanted. But that's
- 10:33Speaker 3: a thirty two year old guy who's been around, and
- 10:37Speaker 3: it was it was a lot like finger painting for him.
- 10:40Speaker 3: And I think it would even be hard to judge,
- 10:44Speaker 3: even for you know, the coaches, for what the value was.
- 10:50Speaker 3: But I thought Warner showed some things. He's just, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 3: he's a little undersized and he's always going to have
- 10:58Speaker 3: to battle that. But he really did show some proficiency,
- 11:02Speaker 3: which a week after he had been in Kansas City
- 11:06Speaker 3: Chiefs practices, I thought was very telling for him. And
- 11:10Speaker 3: I would think they'll at least discuss, you know, is
- 11:14Speaker 3: that worthy of a practice squad spot, you know, later on,
- 11:18Speaker 3: just because he looked like he had the brain power
- 11:21Speaker 3: to make it happen.
- 11:23Speaker 2: All right, I'm gonna ask you the classic question again, Leggy,
- 11:26Speaker 2: because I guess I'm intrigued by it. Yet again. We
- 11:28Speaker 2: do get two post camp signings, a corner and a receiver.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Why and heck you not even think about it? Seeing
- 11:36Speaker 2: in the corner. Those seem to be the two most
- 11:38Speaker 2: lockdown positions on the team, but especially receiver. We talk
- 11:40Speaker 2: to you all the time about what roles could be
- 11:42Speaker 2: left in that receiver room. Yet they signed what three
- 11:45Speaker 2: or four in the college undrafted and then they signed
- 11:47Speaker 2: one out of this rookie mini camp. What are they
- 11:49Speaker 2: looking for that they don't have or is this just
- 11:51Speaker 2: specifically special team stuff?
- 11:54Speaker 3: And Andy, those two positions take the more they track
- 12:02Speaker 3: everything electronically. Now the data for practice, you know how
- 12:05Speaker 3: many steps you've run, how many yards you've run, All
- 12:09Speaker 3: of that is tracked, and there are very there might
- 12:13Speaker 3: not be two other positions in a training camp situation
- 12:18Speaker 3: or in a off season workout situation that that cover
- 12:23Speaker 3: more ground. So you need more bodies to get through
- 12:28Speaker 3: everything you'd like to this time of year without crushing
- 12:33Speaker 3: your your frontline players. So a lot of it is
- 12:36Speaker 3: that just that you're the real estate those positions cover
- 12:41Speaker 3: is frankly, just more in these types of workouts that
- 12:46Speaker 3: they're doing that they'll do next month. So some of
- 12:49Speaker 3: it is that you want to go into training camp
- 12:51Speaker 3: with a lot of bodies at corner and a lot
- 12:54Speaker 3: of bodies at wide receiver and enough arms at quarterback
- 12:58Speaker 3: to get you through. And I think they're just positioning
- 13:01Speaker 3: for that. And with the practice squad so big now,
- 13:05Speaker 3: almost every GM I discussed this with firmly believes in
- 13:09Speaker 3: today's league you cannot have enough corners and everyone's gonna scour, uh,
- 13:17Speaker 3: you know, as many places as they can to have
- 13:20Speaker 3: corners they like in house. And even though the Broncos
- 13:24Speaker 3: are deeper than almost every team in the league at corner,
- 13:28Speaker 3: they always want a couple more.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Just waiting those high step count positions out there. By
- 13:35Speaker 1: the way Ley schedule release on Thursday, you got any hints,
- 13:38Speaker 1: you can drop any any nuggets that you're hearing out there.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Well, you know, you always get a lot of hints
- 13:44Speaker 3: that if you play in the Northeast. I guess is
- 13:47Speaker 3: what you know?
- 13:48Speaker 2: You're really you know, Yeah, because we've got Eagles Cowboys.
- 13:51Speaker 2: On Thanksgiving, they announced that we.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Needed we needed more opening weekend from the NFC East.
- 13:57Speaker 3: I guess, yes, I guess that's another. But no, I
- 14:01Speaker 3: have not heard much. No. Look, Broncos are fourteen and three.
- 14:06Speaker 3: They're gonna get a heavy dose of prime time. They're
- 14:08Speaker 3: gonna get a heavy dose of the odd day.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Game, you know, on the holiday.
- 14:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they're gonna get you know, they're going
- 14:18Speaker 3: to be in the mix for all those and I
- 14:21Speaker 3: think the next couple of days we might hear a
- 14:25Speaker 3: little bit. But right now that they're not on the
- 14:30Speaker 3: frontline burner as far as the leakage.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Goes, okay, well you don't want to be on that
- 14:36Speaker 1: burner with the leakage. That's Jeff Legwald, everybody, ESPN dot com.
- 14:41Speaker 1: Jeff will talk you on Friday. We'll have a schedule,
- 14:43Speaker 1: so we'll talk to you on Friday. We look forward
- 14:44Speaker 1: to it. Man, Thank you.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll know what I'm going to be doing this fall.
